Microsoft Word 2003 keeps Crashing

Q: Microsoft Word 2003 keeps Crashing

Hey,

I have a problem where Word 2003 crashes when I open a document, especially if that document is an email attachment, or something I havn't authored, it happens about 95% of the time. It usually freezes and i can't type, or use my mouse on the page, i usually have to right click on the window bar to close the window. It then pops up a window that I have chosen to close the unresponsive program and asks me to send notification to microsoft. I have dloaded all the latest security packs etc., checked the msoft website, visrus checked and run the office recovery software as well and havn't had any luck in fixing the problem.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

thelaceman

I have created in Microsoft Word 2003 on an XP OS some lengthy documents. I created them using a view setting of 150%.

I sent them to my employer, who is using Windows 98 and Microsoft Word 97. My boss opened them with his system and they displayed on the screen at a view of 200%. He wants me to send him Word documents that he can open from the CD-R that I send that will automatically display at 100% view on the screen so that he does not have to set the view for each document as it displays.

So what is the answer.

Is there a way that I can save my created documents so that when my boss gets them on a CD-R that they will open on his system at a view setting of 100%.

Is there also a way that his system can be set to default to 100% in reading from the CD-R.

My boss does not want to copy the documents to the system hard disk from my sent CD-R, preferring to read and copy directly from the CD-R that I send, so that the original documents will not accidentally be changed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi all,

My Microsoft Word 2003 program keeps closing down on its own with the following details:

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: WINWORD.EXE
Application Version: 11.0.8328.0
Application Timestamp: 4c717ed1
Fault Module Name: WINWORD.EXE
Fault Module Version: 11.0.8328.0
Fault Module Timestamp: 4c717ed1
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 00075469
OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.3
Locale ID: 4105
The only hardware change I had just before this started happening was a new power supply installed. I'm running Windows Vista on an Acer desktop.

In an attempt to resolve the problem, yesterday, I did a "system restore" to the date just prior to the power supply being installed and that seemed to solve the problem until I turned on my computer this morning.

I also use Word as my Outlook 2003 editor, and the other day, I may have opened an unsafe link from a friend. I'm running Avast anti-virus software and am doing a scan right now just in case something evil got into my computer.

I've also tried the Office 2003 Student and Teacher Edition repair function, but nothing has changed.

Any suggestions from this wonderful group of gurus would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks,

Marjatta

Did you run detect and repair?
Did you try going through Control Panel->Programs and Features(Add or Remove Programs)-> Change/Remove on the program and then select repair?
I do not think the power supply would have made that drastic of a change. Try running the MS Outlook PST Scan file.

Try This Fix (had the same issue and this worked for me)
Quit Microsoft Outlook if it's running.
Double-click Scanpst.exe, located at drive:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\LocaleID folder - where LocaleID is the locale identifier (LCID) for the installation of Microsoft Office. The LCID for English - United States is 1033.
In the Enter the name of the file you want to scan box, enter the name of the .pst or .ost file that you want to check, or click Browse to look for the file.
To specify scan log options, click Options, and then click the option you want.
Click Start.
When the scanning is completed, and if errors were found, you will be prompted to start the repair process.
To change the name or location of the backup file created during the repair process, in the Enter name of backup file box, enter a new name, or click Browse to look for the file.
Click Repair.
Start Outlook using the profile that contains the .pst file that you tried to repair.
On the Go menu, click Folder List.
In the Folder List, you may see a Recovered Personal Folders folder containing default Outlook folders or a Lost and Found folder. The recovered folders are usually empty, because this ... Read more

It also crashes sometimes when I try to close it. Additionally, Microsoft Photo Editior is also having problems. I'm running XP and MS Office 2003. Whenever I close Outlook it causes Word to display.. "Word has a problem and must close". Then Word starts and when I "X" out of it, it displays "Word automatically saved changes to the normal document template. Do you want to load it?" Clicking no Word starts and looks normal (although it takes about 30 seconds to start) when I "x" out a window appears which says “MS Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close". After clicking OK Word appears again and when I click "X" it goes through the same routine again and this time it may close after bringing up the same error and must close it again...

I have run repair to no avail. When I run Word in safe mode it runs OK. Question is how do I find out which add-on is at fault? I would remove and reinstall it but I don't think that would change anything. I must find out which add-on is causing the trouble.
I should also add that when I call up Word it takes about 20-30 seconds to start.

Any suggestions?

Please...

A:Solved: Outlook & word 2003 are in conflict and crashing

Problem Solved... The following from About.com resolved my problems...

Oftentimes, problems starting Word can be traced back to a corrupt Normal.dot file. If you’re having problems starting Word, you should check that the problem is not with the Normal.dot template before you reinstall the software.

First, locate the Normal.dot template using My Computer or Windows Explorer. The location will vary from computer to computer, depending on options you specified during the original installation and which version of Windows you are using. However, the file path is most likely C:\Documents and settings\Application data\Microsoft\Templates. Once you have located the file, rename it by using the shortcut menu.

Restart Word from the Start menu or from your desktop icon, if you have one. Word will automatically create a new Normal.dot template; if Word starts without any problems, you can deduce that the problem was a corrupt Normal.dot template.

If the problem persists, it is time to take a look at the Windows Registry entry for Word.

Note: If you have made a lot of customizations to Word, you do not want to delete the old Normal.dot template. You can use the Organizer to copy the customizations you made to your new Normal.dot file.

With Word, I have words that i use that are correct, but it keeps underlining them in red and i know you can add the words into its dictionary so that this doesn't happen for those words anymore. I forgot on where you do it, i know i should know as i've been using word since Office '95. I just always click on ignore. Someone did tell me once, but i need my memory refreshed.

A:Microsoft Word 2003 - Need Help

The easiest way I found was to run spell check and when the pop up dialog box appears on words not in Word's dictionary( red squigglies) , there is an option to ignore, change, etc., or "add to dictionary". It is there that I make a decision whether to add or not, and I add it to the general dictionary. Check the HELP to determine how to set up a *special* dictionary, if that is what you want to do, just for these words.
Hope this helps.

does it have to do something with like Insert>Object>Equations ?? or something like that? because if it is im having that problem =/

can anyone help? thanks

A:Microsoft Word 2003

Hum.. You want to insert a mathematical expression in your text? Or do you want Word to calculate a quare root for you?

In case of the former, you have to install an Office component called Equation Editor.
If you have that, then you can do Insert->Object->Create New->Microsoft Equation

Otherwise, you can always draw the formula in Paint and then copy-paste to Word

In the old microsoft word, when you had more than one document open, they would all use the same window, and minimize within itself. However I now have 2003 and when I open a new document, they are completly seperate windows and use two buttons on the task bar. I liked having all my documents open in the same program that i can control with the x in the corner. This is hard to explain so i Hope you know what i am talking about. I know it is possible to change this setting because ive used antoher computer where it has done this. I just can not find it in the options or anywhere I have looked. Any help would be appriciated. Even maybe a term i could use to look for it. THank you

I have never had a problem with Microsoft Word until now. I can use Word fine on my computer. In the past week or so, however, when I send Microsoft Word documents to people, sometimes they say they can open them and sometimes they say they can’t open them. It depends on the person. On some of my e-mail clients (I have multiple e-mail accounts), I can open the files I send myself (i.e. I will send an e-mail to my multiple e-mail accounts and I will attach Word documents to that e-mail. On some clients I can open the files I send myself, and others I can’t...I did a check disk /r (checkdisk repair) on March 9 and it fixed the problem. I could send Word documents and everyone could download them and I could send Word documents to myself and download them via AOL Mail, Yahoo, and everything. And then the problem came back again. When I click on the file in the mail client that doesn’t read the documents correctly, the attachment comes up as saying that the mail client interprets the .doc file as being related to Notepad (specifically listing Notepad as the program it wants to open the file in), not Word. Then when I try to open it (either straight from the e-mail or after downloading the file back to my hard drive), it tries to open in word and gives me the converter message. When it was working for a little while on March 9, the way I knew a Word document would work correctly even before trying to open a file is that AOL.com Mail would list it as being a Word doc... Read more

A:Microsoft Word 2003 nightmare

I haven't read nor absorbed your entire message.
There's one thing that comes to mind immediately - your clients may have slightly different Word. If they have 2007, you need to send them the 2007 version or have them open as previous version (if possible).

Long ago there was an office update which added some sort of converter to my Office2003. Perhaps if you save as some other than 2003 .doc it would work. That update permitted me to open a document or two someone sent me.

Edited: what is one supposed to do with that megaupload site? All I see to pay lots of UK currency. I'm willing to try to open your
files in my Office2003 but not under those conditions.

Windows Explorer tells me it's at C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\normal.dot, but I don't see andy AppData in the Users\Owner display. Good Morning, I got a new laptop. Successfully loaded out MS Office 2003 from disc. I was successful in registering/validating it with Microsoft. All works fine. I am able to perform all Word functions. The only problem is every time I open Word it presents me with the End User License Agreement and asks that I ACCEPT or DECLINE. I have accepted it over 10 times, but it will ask me again the next time I load Word.

Any ideas as to whats going on? Or, any suggestions as to how I can stop the EULA persistence.

Hi there,

I asked a similar question before in that it involved Microsoft Word 2003; and I have another in a related vein now. Is it okay/or safe to have 100 and more pictures in one .doc file? I don?t mean that the pictures here are ?as-is? -- in other words, big pictures -- but they are in fact shrunken down in the document ? sort-of like small stills, lined up. Is this okay to do?

A:Care with using Microsoft Word 2003

I don't see why there would be ay issues having that many images in one file.
At least if anything, it would be up to the computer, not MS Word, MS Word is made for large documents, if required in the office.

do a search on your system for normal.dot and when you find it, rename it to normal.old

try to open Word

if it works, and you have no macros or personal changes made to your normal.dot, then simply delete normal.old

Hi, I've been having this problem with MS Word 2003 for a little bit.

What happens is, I open the application, and the Word box pops up like it's about to open like it should, but then it takes forever to open, maybe over 10 minutes or so, unless I just end the process like I usually do since it takes so long.

The only thing I've noticed different about anything when I open it is, Navw32.exe starts running, and if i end that, an alert window opens that says "The document C:\Documents and Settings\David Solis\Application Data\Microsoft\Normal\Templates.dot is still infected. Do you want to delete this file?". I'll click no, and Word opens.

Any idea what any of this is, why it's doing it, and how to stop it? Thanks!

I bought a new Dell XPS 420 with Microsoft Works Plus 2003 preinstalled. Everything works fine except Word 2003. Certain things I try to do take forever. For instance, trying to insert a chart, print anything, copy and paste something into Word, and several other things can take 60 seconds or more to load. During this time, the program is basically froze until it completes. If I try to close it, I get the ever present ?program not responding? message.
I've tried uninstall/reinstall and ran ? repair Word?. Nothing seems to help. I downloaded the trial version of Word 2007 just to see if it would work, and it worked fine.
I'm running Vista Home Premium 64bit.

Hello,

I currently have about 30,000 lines of macros. Occasionally the people I work for want an updated list of all the macros in that file (most are user specific) so that they know what macros they have and if then need a different one or edit a current one.

What have been looking for is a way to print the names of the macros only, and not the entire marco file/code.

the first macro looks something like this..

Sub hinj()
'
' hinj Macro
' Dr. H's Corticosteroid Injection
'
Selection.TypeText Text:= _
"DESCRIPTION OF PROCEDURE"
Selection.TypeParagraph
Selection.TypeText Text:= _
"The patient's * was injected with."
end sub

(cut short for brevity)

then the next macro, and so on and so forth.

What i have been looking for is a way to print a list of the macros but not the macro themselves.

IE.. I wold like it to print out...

hinj Macro
Dr. H's Corticosteroid Injection

hhyal
Dr. H's Hyalgan Macro

hspi
Dr. H's Supartz Macro.

so on and so forth with all 375 macros printed.

Is there a way to do this? I would be most appreciative for any clue as to how to do this.

Hello there.

Microsoft office 2003 problem.
When starting microsoft word on vista ulitmate, there seems to be a problem

This will automatically shut down, saying there was a problem and is shutting down...
The other programs seem fine, Excel, powerpoint, etc.

I havent a clue what this could be, has anyone else had this problem.
In the top right corner of microsoft word it will say "Finalizing Installation" and then after you type a couple of sentences it will shut down on its own..

This is for a friend of mine, who had microsoft office put on when she bought the laptop of a friend, though she does not have the disk, so i wondered if this is an installation problem.

Would this be some sort of copy of microsoft office 2003, that was put on for her
She has only found this out now as her son needs to use word for school

A:Microsoft office 2003/ Problem with Word

I assume that you're opening up Word from the Start menu here...

Open up the Start Menu and go to Word. Right-click on it. Open up its Compatability tab which is the third tab.

2003 is an XP product. Therefore, Word (and Excel and Access if they're 2003 versions) should be run in compatibility mode for "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)."

If this is not so, check the box and select Windows XP from the list to make it so amd OK the box to close it.

See if it runs now.

I've a little problem, when I start Word 2003, it takes around 20 seconds and then I can use it.
Some times there is even a force close. (then the word 2003 freezes)

And if I type: winword /a in Start it starts up directly.
So now my default program for .doc files = winword. (which is slow)
I can't change it to /a.
(/a is add-ins??? so winword /a = word without add-ins?)
Can i disable those add-ins?

Sorry on the go

But all it is. Is that you have size 10 and then size 22 after it

I can't explain it clearly it's 10 10 10 10 10 22 22 22
And when you backspace the 22 size it stays 22 until you make it size10 again
As for that little dot, it must be the font at that size, or something

A:Microsoft Office Word 2003 problem

I have seen several suggestions for dealing with this problem, some work for some people, others don't and
some of them are potentially destructive, in my opinion, therefore I do not propose to supply any links.

However, I will tell you that I had the same problem recently. I run Office 2003 Professional Edition and
downloaded the Office 2007 trial. It was not for me and I uninstalled it. My problems then started,
with these 'Please wait while Windows configures' messages.

I tried all the usual 'repair' methods, but the only thing which fixed the problem was a complete
uninstall and reinstall of Office 2003. That would be my only suggestion and in addition,
I left the setup files on my hard disk, when asked, because there are some features that are not
immediately installed by the program, even on a full install and it saves digging out the CD/DVD
whenever you come across these features. (Don't remember too clearly which ones, I think it
may have been in connection with Publisher).

I appreciate this may be stating the obvious. If you can find an easier method, which you trust,
good luck.

btw, I am assuming that your computer is virus, adware, malware and spyware free.
You should run something like Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpware if you haven't
checked recently; presumably you have a realtime antivirus scanner.

Whenever I try to open a saved Word document (or even a PowerPoint), the file doesn't open and I get the following message:

"The file ____ is not available.
You may be encountering this message because an anti-virus program is not allowing the file to open. This can be caused by one of two conditions. Either the anti-virus program needs to be updated (due to a compability problem with this application) or there is a virus in the file but the anti-virus program cannot properly remove or process the virus it has found....etc."

Then when I close the document, I get the following message:
"The file Normal already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?"

I've tried deleting the file. I've restarted my computer, deleted "normal.dot" through my computer's search engine, and then opening word. I've tried renaming the file to "normal.old", and followed the instructions after that like I found on a website.
Also, I went to Tools > Macro > Macros and gone to the "Macros in" list, clicked "All active templates and documents", but there weren't any macros listed there.

I tried using the Macro Organizer, and there weren't any macros listed there either.

Many websites suggested that I open the file through MS word and then hold shift before opening it. When I try to open a file, it just says that it isn't available.

I'm having a strange problem with Microsoft Word 2003 SP3.

It only happens on new docs. I'm a writer and when I open ongoing projects in Word everything is fine, but when I open a new doc. my Page Setup doesn't work. If I set it to have 1" of space top, bottom and sides, it doesn't work on the top. My first line starts at the very top of the page.

Also, the ruler up the left side should be dark where that top inch of space should be, but it isn't because it's not working. I discovered a temporary fix in Page Setup by setting the top space to be 2" and the sides and bottom to be 1". However, even doing this I don't get the dark inch or so at the top of my left margin ruler.

I did a repair in ADD Remove Programs but it didn't change anything. It might be a corruption in Word because I have the same Office 2003, SP3 on my laptop and I've compared all the settings on both computers and they appear to be identical.

Has anyone here run into this problem, and do you think uninstalling and reinstalling Office might solve the problem?

Thanks in advance.

I've run into a bit of a weird issue with my Microsoft Word. Whenever I highlight/select text, and press any button (space, "x", backspace, delete, etc.), instead eliminating all that text and performing the action that I pressed, the text just stays in place as if I never highlighted in and the action is carried out at the beginning of the selection. I've never seen anything like this before, and I'm really not sure how to search in the help function for it, so does anyone have any idea how I might fix this? The first file [office2003sp3-kb923618-fullfile-enu] is the Office 2003 SP3 file, the second file [office2003sp3-kb923618-fullfile-enu(2)] is just a second copy of the same file. Both should be 117.7 MB in size. If neither of them are the correct size, you will need to re-download the SP3 file here.

The third file [office2003sp3-kb923618-fullfile-enu.exe.part] is an incomplete download attempt of the Office 2003 SP3 file. This is indicated by the .part extension.

You indicate that the second file " just loads the service pack." This exactly what it is supposed to do. Did you receive any errors during the install? Did the Office 2003 CD install without errors?

Just recently something has changed with my Microsoft Office Word 2003 app.

I'm a writer and I have always been able to drag my pages that I have written today to a folder in My Documents and the same file would stay on my desktop for immediate access later. I realize other may not work this way but it is how I prefer to work as it has become my habit

When I try to drag and drop it now, it drops into the My Documents folder but it no longer remains on the desktop.

Now, in conjunction with this problem, I have another new problem, which is that when I write a page of text in Word and save it to a My Documents folder it doesn't go there. Also when I save a picture to My Pictures as I've always done it won't be there when I look for it. Something is preventing me from saving things and I haven't a clue what it is. I have to open the My Documents folder and drag the Word text page into it. It's the only way I can save stuff for some reason.

Can someone please tell me how I can fix this problem?

Thank you in advance.

Hello, I have Windows XP purchased in 2005, and came with Microsoft Office.

I was using Microsoft word early this morning and something happened and now it won't open.

Of all my desktop icons, everything has color except the Microsoft is WHITE, which I suspected right away had been compromised.

I don't have any Microsoft word software, it came with my computer.

Help, can I get it back? I need to write some letters.

Thank you.

I'm trying to get a Word template that has the auto-text "file name and path" inserted into the footer. I want it to update automatically whenever I save the document into a new directory. Right now it stays the same. Can anyone point me in the right direction? This is a work computer that does NOT have the ribbon.

thanks!

A:Microsoft Word 2003 Header-Footer Question

you just want to to state where it resides in the footer? in the header/footer section, select footer > tools button on the toolbar > insert auto text > filename and path. Then save the template, should be good to go.

and welcome to tsg.....

Hello,

I am having issues with Word and Outlook 2003. I just upgraded them from 2000 and now I am running into a couple of issues. Help!

Microsoft Word 2003
- Can't highlight or select an area on my Word page with my mouse. I can use my keyboard, but that becomes quite annoying as you can imagine.

Microsoft Outlook 2003
- Can't highlight or select an area on my page with my mouse. I can use my keyboard, but that becomes quite annoying as you can imagine.
- Can't open Word document attachments only. I can open excel, pdf, etc..., but not Word.

I have restarted my pc, reinstalled office 2003, erased the normal.dot profile, removed the 11.0\Word\Data registry and no luck. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I keep getting error messages when trying to open files created in Word 2003. The files burn to cd without a problem but when I try to open them off of the cd I get the file may be corrupt try to use recover text option or open and repair option. The odd thing is these word 2003 files open in Office xp without any issues. I have also got an error stating I do not have adminstrative rights on my cd drive. The cd drive is not a network shared drive so I am confused by this error. I have replaced the old cd-r/rw drive with a dvd r/rw and still get the same problems. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, my problem is that when I was using Microsoft Word 2003, I reduced the font of one of the files I was working on and the entire file just transformed so that:
after every line, this symbol appears: ¶
before some lines, this symbol appears: º
and between words, this symbol appears•

This actually happened before, but i, ah, don't remember how i got rid of it. I know it's kind of a small problem, but it's really driving me crazy.

Thanks.

Hi all,
I just switched OS from XP Media Center 2005 SP3 to Vista Home Premium SP1 x64. I moved all of my MS Word files over to the new OS. Now I need to know if I can install my copy of 2003 Word on Vista x64 and have it run properly, and open my 2003 Word files. MS Office 2007 Home/Student comes with EXcel and PP which I would never use and would be a waste of money for me.
Any information on this would be most appreciated.
Thanks,

I have finally decided to seek help for this problem and will be forever grateful if someone is able to help me.

I have a mind-boggling problem with my computer right now. I just recently installed Nero, and now for some reason the following programs always immediately crash when I try to run them:

Microsoft Word, Excel Outlook, and Powerpoint
All of the free Microsoft Games (Freecell, Solitare etc..)
MSN Messenger
iTunes (but not quicktime!?!?)
WinRAR
Daemon Tools

The rest of the programs on my computer are fine, including FireFox, Skype, uTorrent, Internet Explorer, Quicktime, mIRC etc..

And the weird thing is, what I think caused the problem, Nero Burning ROM, is fine and working perfectly!!!

And even weirder, I have had this problem happen to me about 6 months ago when I first installed Windows 7. Everything was working fine, until I installed a program and things started crashing. And the thing is, I know for a fact it was a program other than Nero.

My Thoughts:

I think it must be that for some reason certain types of programs are getting corrupted somehow, and these programs share certain traits, for example they use Microsoft Visual Studio (or some other programming language or installer)

Cry for help:

I hope this makes sense to anyone reading. I have tried formatting several times, and what always happens is that everything is fine until I install one program (usually a different program each time) and then everything starts crashing!!!

Would it help if I sh... Read more

I've got a document about 41 pages, broke into multiple sections. Track changes have been on, I've been able to edit the file for a while up until an hour. Now, when i make any changes this document just closes, this has been tried and same phenomenon occurs on 3 other computers, so it must be something with the file? Any idea would be appreciated.

Some interesting characteristics:
when change is made word shuts down.
but when you use auto recover and word opens back up, the change that caused word to close is actually made.

A:Microsoft Word 2003 closes in error when I make a change with track changes

do you have the remove hidden data feature installed and turned on?
Otherwise, I would suspect a corrupt Normal.dot file - close Word, find and rename or delete it (Word will rebuild it when you open it again).

Good afternoon people,

Firstly, I would like to say hello to everyone who've helped me in the past with my Access help. It's been a long absence with study commitments and such, but as is the purpose of this group, I would like to ask for some tech help:

The situation: Microsoft Word (as part of Office 2003 Professional Edition) frequently closes without user notification on my dad's laptop (Windows Vista Basic). It's recently started, and it interrupts his work. He says that the issue occurs when he minimises documents, but he didn't indicate a frequency of this occurrence. He also told me that once he successfully saves a document and closes Word, he then encounters issues when opening said document; it says that the file has been "corrupted" (I can't remember exactly what the dialog box says), and that the data can be recovered, or to proceed with opening the document. Data recovery doesn't work, and when he proceeds to open the document, Word returns "Program not responding" and "Critical error caused by the program" and other prompts of this nature, which then forces the program to quit.

I am aware that a similar problem is in the Microsoft Knowledge Base for Word 2003, but was last revised in 2004 (so covered only xp and 2000), and am not certain if this issue is the same for Windows Vista. It related to the "Handwriting Recognition" program.

Additionally, as always, there are a multitude of ... Read more

Microsoft Word 2003 on my Sony Vaio laptop doesn't have a Save As function, either in the File menu or as shortcut Alt+F A. It's not even there as a disabled/greyed out option - the options under File go straight from Save to Save as a webpage. Any ideas what could have happened "Save As" or how to restore it?

Ok, so here's the story: everytime I open a document in MSWord 2003, its fine, opens and works and I can type and do whatever. The first time I save the file, it saves properly, however, if I CTRL+S again, it asks me to specify what file I want to save it as, and when I try to save it as the one I have open, it errors me, saying that the file that I have open is a read-only file. That's weird, because in the properties I can clearly see that its not read-only.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on? I un and reinstalled on my PC but the problem continues. Any help will be greatly appreciated =]

Thanks in advance.

BTW I am using XP and the in the blue bar of the open document it says "DocumentName (Read-Only)" after I try to save it for the second time.

Sorry if this is the wrong forum to post in, Im new, but I really need help because my comp has been acting weirdly these past few days.

you apparently are OPENING a R/O document.

find the document of choice,
right-click->properties

at the bottom; Attributes ... is r/o checked or unchecked?

Be sure to save your documents in your profile area:
\Documents and Settings\yourlogin\My Documents\... anywhere below this

Modify your Word Preferences to make the above the Default Directory

Would someone PLEASE help me figure my issue out. I am at a loss as to what I did on my laptop for Microsoft Word to just stop working. This is what's going on:
1. I open up Word; 2. I go to my documents & click on the doc I want to open; 3. I get the pop-up that states, for example, "The file Amer Hist Doc 3 is not available".

If I send the doc as an attachment in my email & then open it on another computer, it comes up fine. It just won't work on my laptop.

Did I accidently hit someone to make Word do this all of the sudden?? Do I just need to un-install Microsoft Office & then reinstall??

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Lily

INFO ONLY for those suddenly having "no response" with MS Office 2003/2007 Word:

Weeks ago I suddenly got a problem with Microsoft Word (Office 2003) usually failing to respond , unable to open or save files, and just "hourglass thinking". In fact I frequently had to go to Task Manager to close it. Tried everything I could think of and read in sites (renaming "normal.dot", reloading MS Office 2003, loading MS Office 2007 with same result, removing Adobe 9 Pro that had been loaded a week before, using "repair" command.............and nothing worked. Finally I found a solitary blog input somewhere saying that the person with same problem on Vista resolved it by uninstalling "Office Live DD-on 1.4". I had installed that a few weeks before I discovered the problem and never used Office on Vista PC since installation. I uninstalled "Office Live Add-ON 1.4" after many hours of trying other things.............and PROBLEM FIXED!
On my XP laptop and desktop, that Add-On has no impact on Office programs but is apparently a problem with Vista. I did not see any such notice on Microsoft site.

Does anyone noe weather vista Microsoft word support the old formated ones? Or is there any plug-in needed to support?

A:Does Vista Microsoft Word Support Old Format Microsoft Word?

I'm assuming you're talking about the new office 2007? meaning word 2007?

If that is the case, then yes it does run older versions of word. In the sense that if you have a word document that was made and saved in Word 2003 it would work in 2007.

Just like when you make something in word 2007 you are able to save it as a Word 03-07 document so it works on both versions of Microsoft Word.

Well i did a big report on my computer with Word Perfect i couldnt print it so i took to school on my flash drive. IN my first class i edited it on Word 2007 and in the class i could print it they had Word 2003 and i couldnt open my file and now i cant even open it in word perfect. I doubt i can use the laptops for a while anyway i can open this on wordperfect

A:Solved: Word Perfect- Word 2003 - word 2007

If you saved the file in the "new" Word 2007 format (with a file extension of .docx) then you will be unable to open it in the other applications.

For Word 2003 you can install a converter, but I know of no XLM converter for WordPerfect.

When using Word 2007 you need to "save as" Word 97-2003 format to retain backwards compatibility.

alright my problem is that i have already used microsoft word 2000 for awhile now and its been fine, no problems whatsoever then about week ago it started doing a lot of crazy stuff when i opened it. this happens every single time. i open it and it states that
it is preparing to install microsoft word 2000 (i already have it installed) then it states that it must gather the required information. At first i thought it was an update so i decided to let it continue. when it was finished it said that "the feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not availible. please insert the microsoft word 2000 disk and hit ok" alright the thing was it wasn't an update. and i couldn't find my word CD because it hasn't asked for one ever since i installed it. I then hit cancel and everything went away and about a minute later my microsoft word 2000 came up and it had no updates and was functioning fine but it was going about half the speed it usually does. Other than that there were no other problems and i continued with my work. The only thing that really bugs me is that this entire process takes about 5 minutes every time I start up... so its kinda of a pain... is there any way to get rid of this? thx to all... Peace Out

I am using the mail merge wizard in Word 2003 to create address mailing labels from a mailing list I saved in an Excel 2003 worksheet.

Everything is fine, I've tested is several times. But there's one very aggravating little problem.

The labels are all created with a space in front of the first line (name) on each and every label.

I want them to look like this:

John Smith
123 Main Street
Charlottesville, VA 22901

But instead they all look like this (the underscore I typed in is actually just a blank space):

_John Smith
123 Main Street
Charlottesville, VA 22901

I've tried everything I can think of.

The spreadsheet cells for names do not have an extra space in them before the names. I have one column in the spreadsheet called Name that has the entire name of the person I want to appear on the first line, so I'm not using separate values for first name and last name, it's just one: Name.

Please advise. Thanks so much!

A:Labels-Mail Merge,Word 2003 & Excel 2003-space at beg.of 1st line

Yup. It's a PITA. You need to NOT use the Address Block. Instead, insert the individual fields. See this article:

I have Word 2003 and 2013 installed on my computer. Word 2013 can't edit files with custom XML elements, so I want to use 2003 to open them. However, whenever I double-click an XML file, it launches 2013. I tried to fix this by selecting "open with" and browsing for Word 2003. But whenever I do that, the program that appears in the open with dialog box is Word 2013--not 2003. I can't select Word 2003 from any open with dialog box from anywhere because of this. How do I fix this?

A:Word 2013 and 2003 installed; default programs won't recognize 2003

It's actually best recommended not to have 2 versions of MS office at the same time, but I guess yours is a special case.

Try opening Word 2003 and open your document from there. See if it works.
