Visiting inlaws. Found major issues on their computer

Q: Visiting inlaws. Found major issues on their computer

My father in law has quite a mess on his pc. I know there are several viruses and he has installed a program called TrustedAntiVirus. I can't access the Control Panel, no icon anywhere. Can't even reset the clock, I get an error stating "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions on this computer. Please contact your system administrator".

He has Norton 360 installed but it wouldn't run until I turned off some startup items in msconfig. I'm including a HijackThis log and Kapersky log. Thanks in advance for any help.

Here is the HijackThis log:

My in-laws called me about this problem. Upon boot up, they get non-system disk or disk error. Of course there is no disk in the a drive. If booting with a boot disk, then the contents of the c drive can be viewed with a dir command but if anything tries to write or tries to be run from the hard drive it says sector not found reading drive c. It doesn't matter what file it is, none can be accessed off of the hard drive. I tried the sys command from the boot disk again nothing can be written the drive and same error. I'm stumped now. Supposedly this all started after Mcaffee cleared a virus for them. I'm skeptical about that being the cause though because they said it was the nimda virus and the symptoms do not match at all.

Any ideas?

Hey m1zz0u, welcome back!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

You have an outdated version of HijackThis. Click here to get the latest version of HijackThis.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro. Make sure to select the Autoclean option. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan... Read more

Download / Install / Update / and Run:
Adaware SE check for any updates before running it.
Get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. You can download it at this SITE
To run this tool, install to the hard drive, then open Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection.

Download and install Spybot S&D . Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

Scan your pc with Housecall. Its a free online scanner. Be sure to put a check the box beside AutoClean

Then doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Do A System Scan And Save Log". Make sure all Windows and Browsers are closed.
When the scan is finished, best to save your text file in the same folder as where you put HiJackthis.
Create a New Thread in HiJackthis Log Help Forum and Copy/Paste the info from your saved Hijackthis log file into your new topic.

(Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator). It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.Step 2Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. ... Read more

I've been landed with my in-laws computer to troubleshoot. They are just computer-savvy enough to get rid of the password-protected administrator account I set up, and set themselves up as administrators!Anyway, the computer has been playing up, failing to reboot properly, so I took a quick look.(I've just added this bit, not trying to bump, just providing more details...The situation is that if you reboot the computer, it starts to start up, gets so far, then bluescreens and reboots again. You then get the usual Safe mode option of starting. I booted in safe mode and it still bluescreened and restarted. If you try to restart in normal mode, same again, it basically sticks in a loop. However, if you switch off the pc for 10 secs, and switch on again, it boots up fine in normal mode.)After reaming out dad-in-law about setting himself up as system admin, I poked around. In the windows security log there are several errors relating to corrupted files having bad hashes, mostly these files are BitDefender files (particularly bdselfpr.sys and bdfsfltr.sys), but also a windows system file called mdc8021x.sys (I have copies of the corrupt files and they scan clean with BitDefender on my PC.) I also installed and ran SuperAntiSpyware, and straight away a log entry showed up for a corrupted SASENUM.SYS. All points to the possibility of an embedded nasty in my book.I've also run diagnostic tests to verify no hardware issues. So anyway, ran HijackThis, and the log is attached.Logfile... Read more

To sum this all up, I'm simply trying to download a graphics driver to play my game; however, when I install this graphics driver, my computer freezes on start up and I cannot get it to turn on ever. I have done a system restore and reset my whole computer. I then proceeded to try to download the graphics driver again and my computer completely freezed again. I will say, it did start up one time after waiting for 2 hours; however, I couldn't even access the desktop because it was ridiculously slow and it had an extremely long delay. I'm 100% sure I'm not downloaded the wrong graphics driver because I'm using AMD's "Automatically Detect and Install Your Driver" program from the official AMD website. I also tried using AMD's Catalyst Manager program to install the driver I needed.  My computer shouldn't be glitching out over me installing a graphics driver. This computer has the ability to run these games, it exceeds the minimum requirements and definitely meets the proper requirements to play games. Here is some information about my laptop:Name: AMD Radeon HD 8400 / R3 Series - Chip Type: AMD Radeon Graphics Processor (0x9830) -DAC Type: Internal DAC (400MHz) - Device Type: Full Display Device - Processor: AMD A6-5200 APU with Radeon(TM) HD Graphics -Direct X Version 12__________________________________________________________________________________ Please help me! Ok, I wouldn't say its "major", but I'm having issues with my "downloads" folder. There is a file in it I want to get rid of, but everytime I click on the folder, Windows Explorer goes into "not responding" and freezes. I can't delete the downloads folder, which is problematic, because my antivirus keeps getting stuck trying to scan it.

Any way I can get rid of that stupid folder, or at least the file inside? It's just an exe file, it's about 1.3 gigs.

thanks in advance,

Rukio

Hello, I've been having BSOD problems for a while now, just now it's taken me four restarts to log into windows (blue screen during/just after windows xp logo loads up).

The message frequently quotes the driver_irql_not_less_or_equal message and *sometimes* (normally doesn't) names a file (atapi.sys for example and others). Although I've had other BSOD (something about page files).

The only hardware I recently installed was a new 512mb stick of RAM since one of the old sticks (I had 2 256mb ones) failed and the new stick runs under a different speed (333Mhz) whereas the two older ones were at 400Mhz so they couldn't run together.

Please help me.

A:Major computer issues (BSOD etc)

The ram is probably your issue as that is not how you add ram....you need to match density, cas latency and ecc factor, then speed. Using same mfgr, model and speed seldom even works so the best way it so got to sites such as www.crucia, kingston or corsair.com and put in your pc model or motherboard model and then purchase the exact model numbers suggested only.
But in any case you need to give us the entire message as well.

Hello there for all of you guys reading this-- I have quite the problem on my hands. I've been building computers for a few years now and I've never had a problem like this before.
----------------------------------
Computer Specs:
PS: Alliance 450W Power Supply
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3700+ (Socket 939)
MB: ASUS A8V Deluxe (AGP8x) (Socket 939)
RAM: Corsair TWIN-X 2x512MB PC3200
GFX: GeForce 6200 256MB
HD1: Maxtor 7200RPM 120GB IDE (8mbit Cache)
HD2: Seagate 7200RPM 160GB IDE (8mbit Cache)
CD1: Lite-On 16x DVD/CD-rom
CD2: Plextor 42x/24/48 CD-R/RW
OS: Windows XP Professional
-----------------------------------
So as you can tell from the above specs, that even though I can't afford top of the line equipment, I have a pretty good gaming setup (aside from the video card ). Before I get to the problem, I must tell a story on how I began to build this computer, please bare with me, for it does sort of relate to the current assessment that can be done.

About 6 months ago my friend purchased the motherboard that I was using, and he also was using around the same specs that I have. After about 6 months he wanted to upgrade his video card and noticed that the best cards out there are no longer AGP8x and instead PCI-e, so he was forced to buy a new motherboard. He had absolutely no troubles with this motherboard, and I was the one who both built his computer and took it apart and swapped the motherboards. After he got his new one, he told me that I could have this motherboa... Read more

ok first off 2-3 days ago, my netbook stopped picking up wireless internet, I couldn't figure out why, It works fine when plugged in, but unplugged nothing, I have gone online and checked everything and everything setting wise is where it should be, but thats not the major issue. Tonight about 4 hours ago I was on my computer, dell desktop ( dont have model right with me) everything was fine, ate dinner came back and computer was off, said weird. Wife came in and said internet is out, so I reset router and all that, never came back on. tried to restart computer got windows screen, no loading bar and freezes, says no boot disk avail after a minute I went to boot menu and there is cd drive and another choice, I read on my phone to pick 2nd choice nothing, restart, same thing. went to f2 menu said to put hard disk as 1st boot choice as it wasnt, changed it and still nothing. Our laptop went out 2 weeks ago an acer, and the hard drive was fried totally and the computer was barely 2 years old, then we were given this desktop less than a week ago and now this. I havent installed any real programs on it yet except printer, sony camera software, mozilla firefox.. etc and all of a sudden dead. Im running out of options, and my wife needs a computer this week for college classes, this is a bad time for this computer to go out. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hey guys,
you always manage to help me and im extremely thankful...but i have another issue.

i am running Windows XP Professional
When i start up my computer, it doesnt go into the Log In screen, where it gives an option to who can log in (you know, it has my name, my sisters name and my other sisters login). It goes straight to my account - but thats the least of my problems - my taskbar is pretty much gone - i cant see my start button or the quick launch buttons, when i press the "windows key" on my keyboard, my start menu opens, but i dont cant see anything like "Run", "Search", "Help", "Control Panel" etc. I can only go into "my programs" (and even that doesnt look normal).
Anyways, when i try going into my Device manager its says something about a mmcndmgr.dll error and how its not installed properly - and a few of my programs, when i try opening them up, it says something about the folder C:\WINDOWS\System32.
I've tried running a HJT log, and i can run it, though i cant open it up because my Notepad isnt working - i've tried other to open it up in other programs but nothing is working.
I've tried doing a System Restore, and that too is not working - i've tried many checkpoints and all say it cannot be restored. I can't open my disk fragment program either
this is only a few problems..please help!!!!!!!!
thanks guys!!

Ok so I built my computer and everything worked fine. I loaded XP professional on it and WoW and SC2 Vent etc. I then ran some updates (one of which was the new drivers for my gtx 460) and I began having problems opening programs. Every time I would open firefox or WoW, it would crash. I reinstalled windows XP and it seemed to fix it but the error has now returned (after I tried to install the gtx 460 drivers again). I reinstalled windows again and did not install the new drivers this time but the error remains. I've reinstalled windows multiple times now and have done nothing except install SP2, install drivers from the CDs, and load firefox. Now the problem seems to only happen when I open WoW or SC2 or when I try to load flash content (like youtube) on firefox. I really need help because I am begining to suspect it is my hardware. Here is a rundown

AMD Phenom II x2 555 (4 cores unlocked)
4GB G.skill ripjaws ddr3 1600 RAM
ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO mobo
MSI hawk talon attack gtx 460
500GB WD hard drive (cant remember model but I doubt it would matter)

Please offer my any suggestions on what the problem is

A:Major issues with computer, cannot load programs

Perhaps you didn't configure your overclock correctly. You used DDR3 1600 RAM and the following is your RAM standard: DDR3 1800(O.C.)/1600(O.C.)/1333/1066/800 ECC,Non-ECC,Un-buffered Memory. I believe you have to overclock your system to utilize 1800 and 1600 RAM.

When faced with your choices of RAM supported by your motherboard, I have always chosen the fastest RAM that doesn't require overclocking so I don't have experience configuring the overclock.

Upon starting up my Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit gaming computer today, major issues have arisen. I have fund that most things are disabled in services. some things i was able to get back up and running by setting to manual/auto and starting them, but many core things give me "Windows could not start [Service name] service on local computer. Error 1068: the depenndency service or group failed to start".
What i cannot do includes but is not limited to:Connect to the internet
Change color scheme from classic
uninstall a program

I have tried to reinstall windows (and go back to factory settings, but that gives me "windows cannot copy files required for installation. the file may be corrupt or missing. make sure all files required for installation ar availble and restart the installation.. Error code 0x80070241.

Looking at this ive come to the conclusion that "Virus = Very yes" and while i understand i'm pretty screwed here, ive dealt with quite a few viruses, but this one has me stumped. And honestly i literally hadnt downloaded anything the last time it was running, so all should be fine, but its clearly not. Help would be greatly appreciated!

If you reinstall windows from dvd ... a virus is not active!! Did restore to factory settings actually did something? Same question for reinstall win7.

My desktop computer is experiencing major problems. Back in May 2010 at some point my computer started experiencing some issues, which later resulted into more problems... listed below.

1. It takes a long time to start/boot, usually about 20-30 before even login screen to sign onto windows. (during this time it is only a black screen with the cursor) Once I sign in, it takes an additional 15min to boot everything up to the desktop.

Can anyone give me any type of advice?
Currently I am trying to install HiJackThis onto the infected pc via 3.5Floppy which was downloaded from another computer and because the infected computer will not recognize any external devices, flash or hard drive I have no other way of installing this program. Also, whatever this infection is I cannot get onto the internet and therefore cannot process a direct install.

If anyone had any advice or suggestions please help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, I don't know if anyone can help me on this one or not; it's going to be difficult (perhaps) considering the limited information I can give. I recently put together a new computer for my girlfriend, but didn't have the time to stay during the entire Windows installation. Apparently, while XP was installing (my girlfriend had gone out) her mother attempted to follow the prompts eek: ); during this she mis-typed the serial key, and didn't know what to do... according to her, the installation froze. She couldn't tab to get back, and it didn't recognize the mouse. She restarted the computer, and apparently was able to get windows to install. My girlfriend called me later to tell me that "the screen is all wrong, the colors don't look right." Upon asking her what the problem was, she replied "the screen." 'Describe it to me' "it's the monitor". 'No, what's wrong with it?' "THE SCREEN DOESN"T LOOK RIGHT!!!". Heh. You can see what i'm dealing with. I had her go into desktop settings to crank the resolution up to at least 1024x768, and high colors; after she hits apply, nothing happens.
I told her to install the drivers for the graphics card. She's tried twice; each time it goes through the driver installation, and tells her to restart. Upon restarting, it goes to the Windows loading screen, and then (as best I can tell from what she's telling me) the monito... Read more

So I have a computer from the Stone Age (a gateway computer from 2001 that runs Windows ME). I was working today on trying to speed it up by doing a number of different things. I was about to run my computer in safe mode, but when I restarted my computer to try to get it into safe mode, I didn't remember how. I pressed the wrong thing and ended up in the "BIOS Setup Utility." I am smart enough to know not to mess with anything in the BIOS, but when I existed from it all I got was a blank black screen with a blinking cursor. I restarted the computer and I got the following message:

"The Hard drive was not found. Consult the Trouble Shooting section of your user' manual, etc."

Now I don't know if I accidentally did something when in the Bios Setup Utility or if my computer coincidently decided to die on me. The computer freezes all the time and gives me all sorts of problems. Should I go the Bios Setup Utility and hit "Load Setup Defaults" and see what happens??? Would doing that at least allow me to figure out if the problem really lies in the BIOS? Would doing that erase my hard drive or will everything be okay?

Please help me... I have some files I want to get off of my computer.

a computer that old probably needs a CMOS battery replacement. Without it you will not be able to get into BIOS.

Hi all. Ive been battling this issue for a few days now. whenever i visit sites such as myspace or espn.com, when im either searching around on the sites my computer will lock up. i can hear it processing information as if it were getting sent massive amounts of information, yet when i check the sites on another computer in my house i dont have these issues. i tried disabling javascript and it worked for part of the problem, but when i started to search the website further, i encountered the issue again. This occurs with both internet explorer and firefox, and my flashplayer and windows media player are both updated. ive searched my computer with spybot and adaware.

A:Computer locking up when visiting certain sites

Try reseting you security permissions. Goto tool > internet options > security tab. Click on default level, then set it to low hit apply, then move it right back to medium and hit apply. This will put it back to microsoft recommended settings. let us know if that works.

So today I logged on to wikipedia only to see the sopa blackout message. within two minutes my firewalls detected numerous incoming and outgoing connections. then my desktop froze followed by all commands. I then turned my computer off. waited. then turned it back on. after going to the black xp screen it reboots to the "we apologize for the inconveinice but windows.." last known config-reboots to the we apologize screen. start normal-same thing. safe mode works. I ran malwarebytes in safe mode and it found the following threats:
trojan.winlock
pup.removeWGA
exploit.drop.7

after scan and necessary reboot, my computer gets caught in the restart loop with no way to start windows except choosing safemode or safemode with networking. and the threats keep reappearing. they will not go away!

Hi all,

First post bc I can't find a good answer to this question anywhere.

I play guitar and as such, I frequently visit www.ultimate-guitar.com. For the past few months, whenever I visit the site, there is a good chance of my computer spontaneously just shutting down. It doesn't happen every time, but it happens a good portion of the time that I go to the site, and it only ever happens on that site.

I'm currently running 64-bit Vista Home Premium. This happens on both Chrome and Firefox.

Over the last few days, any time I try to visit youtube my computer completely freezes.  The mouse doesn't move, I can't push ctrl+alt+del, nothing at all works.  The screen just freezes while the page is loading.  The computer doesn't seem to be busy working when it freezes.  It seems to just stop completely.  I do not have this problem with any other websites.  I have scanned for viruses with Spybot and Malwarebytes.  I downloaded Ccleaner and used that too, as I thought it might be some sort of registry error.  No issues have been found.  There are no other sypmtoms of problems with the computer.  It is not running slowly.  Everything seems normal except for youtube.

I am using Firefox 20.0..1  There are no strange add ons or toolbars that I use.  I use Windows 7.  Any ideas what might be causing the problem?

A:Visiting youtube causes computer to freeze completely

I did a little more experimenting, and discovered that the problem only seems to be when using firefox.  Chrome and Internet explorer load the page.  I did, however notice that the Samsung ad at the top of youtube had an error loading.  The problem with Firefox seems to occur at the moment the Samsung ad finishes loading.  Perhaps it is related specifically to that.

I have an infected laptop running XP Pro SP3. It had Spyware Protect 2009 on it but I was able to stop the sysguard.exe process and delete sysguard.exe from the Windows subdirectory and from the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\....\Run registry hive. There is still at least one other major problem. IE 7 is redirected to display "internet explorer warning visiting this web site may harm your computer" most of the time. I can get to google sometimes and even search something but when I try to follow a link - I get the redirection message. It also prevents me from running a system restore and most of the scanning software such as malwarebytes, SDfix and several others. I was able to run HijackThis but when I tried to post the report, it redirected me again so I saved the log file to a thumbdrive and logged onto an uninfected computer to post this.

I'm attaching the log file.

I have run Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials.

Here is what I got: My mother inlaw just bought a new PC with W7 Home on it. I am slowly teaching her how to orginize all her files and Pics to avoid the mess she had on her old XP system (shortcuts to shortcuts, reapeat files etc) My question is there a free program I can install to log into her system remotly from work or home if she botches something up? She has called several times because she has put a folder somewhere and has trouble finding it again. I would like to get in there and find it, and move it to where she wanted it before. She is learning slowly and is messing up a little here and there, not very tech savy. She just learned last night in one of our lessons she can ask questions in Google and find answers LOL. I have to say I am proud of her though

After downloading a file I immediatley knew something was wrong. Programs that I did not want were on my computer. Namely "Facetheme" and "Rigntonejunkiez." Immediatley I went to the control panel to see everything that was on my computer that I didn't expect to install from this file. There were the two previously mentioned programs and "Start Now Toolbar" as well. I tried uninstalling these immediatley and restarting my computer. Upon restart I noticed that my Virus Protection software didn't seem to be running properly. I opened my browser to start doing some research. This is where the first big red flag appeared. Upon opening Mozilla I had a new start page (that I had never set as my start page nor heard of) called "Start Now." Supposedly this page was apart of Bing. I knew this was crap because I didn't set it and I couldn't click the "Bing" link. So I went to google and searched "Start Now." I read a few mixed articles one of which stated it was spyware. I figured that already so I believed it. A message also popped up on my screen that I had never seen it said something like "thank you for registering with Win Money every $5 spent today could make you win $1000." Ok so now this sounds like key logging and identity scams. I know this is something big so I keep searching and I keep finding weird things going on with the websites that are resulting from my searc... Read more

Okay i'll give you a little background.

I needed to use the "£" symbol, but my keyboard is set up with the alternate configuration of keys (ie where " and @ for example are muddled up sometimes), so i tried to change the keyboard driver thinking this was the problem, i looked underneath the keyboard and found it was made by "ortek" so i installed the "ortek" keyboard driver, it asked me to reboot and i clicked on yes or whatever the prompt is, BUT, when windows restarted i found the keyboard AND mouse had both been disabled somehow, NEITHER will respond when windows loads!!! And there is NO WAY as of yet to correct this as the drivers are detected as working fine! I tried plugging in a USB mouse and keyboard but they did not get installed for some reason.
This is a MAJOR problem as either i have to re-install windows OR buy a new hard disk!!!!!!

Alright... So... Earlier today I tried to access my net-banking which uses a java based script to varify my details. It did not appear as usually so I went and tried another java based object I use often which is my schools scheduling. It wanted me to install java 7 update 5 which I knew I already had. It then came with the error saying it was already installed.

I went and uninstalled it, however its not removed from my list of programs. I went and used CCleaner to try and remove it, didn't help. Tried a system restoration which continued to fail no matter which point in time I tried. I have now removed everything related to Java and it doesn't show up in the control panel, but still in the list of programs.

I could really use any help you guys might offer.

Hi all. So I have a problem and I'm stumped. I don't know how I did this, but all of my applications try to open with the same app. And when ever I change it, then all the other apps change to as well. Example:

Google Chrome is trying to open with itunes.
So I change Google Chrome so It will open with Google Chrome
Now WorldofWarcraft, Internet explorer, calculator, Utorrent etc are all automatically changed so that they want to open with Google Chrome as well.

And I can't figure out how to separate the programs so they each open with their own respective apps.
Any help on this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

A:application issues. MAJOR issues!

What has probably happened is that you've associated .lnk files with a program. These are their own type of files, used for shortcuts, which by default just say "look over there" to point to the file they represent. They aren't the program, they just point to it. Instead of following the default, you've accidentally instructed the computer to open the links themselves in chrome etc.

The simplest solution is to download the registry fix for link files.
You'll have to unzip the file and then double click to merge into the registry.
Through any prompts, and if necessary reboot your machine. That should get all links working normally.

Finally, the file that you actually have to download is located here:

Heya guys i need some help if i could be helped, teton if you could help out id be glad i saw your other post, ok one major thing is my windows has been acting very slowly and i do not know why i thought it would just be built up errors and everything so i reformatted this morning completely clean and it is still acting up and being slow, when i reboot it takes forever and locks up at black screens often and there is just a major delay in my windows activity

my second problem seems to have alot to do with (http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...mon-exe-2.html) that thread right there i have the "ctpmon.exe" going because i had opened up an exe file which basically dumped trojan virus's all over my computer and i have spybot and adaware and avg pro and you name it iv got my computer secure and iv cleaned all of the infections i can, but it seems it has made problems with my registry as well and i cant really seem to get it fixed and get rid of it, any ideas about either of them? i looked over the steps on the other thread and understand them wondering if you should have me try them too, also the first downloading link was not working for me. please help me out thanks.

I have a Gateway C 140x with Vista Home Premium. It's only about 1 year old. I've had the hard drive wiring redone once, had the hard drive replaced once, and had my screen tightened because it had about a 1-inch wobble.

I was cleaning up my computer the other night (getting rid of junk I didn't need anymore). When I finally emptied the trash can, everything was running fine. Of course, though, upon restarting, my computer awakened seemingly done for.

When I turn it on, it freezes at the initial Gateway page. Depending on what I do, I get various results...

If I just leave my computer sitting there, it will either stay at the Gateway page, or go to a black screen. Sometimes, if I leave it there even longer, the black screen will come up with something saying:
"PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-MOF: Exiting Intel Boot Agent.
Operating System Not found"
Even though, of course, I know that Vista is on there. If I hit enter to this, it simply tells me the same thing..over and over.

Sometimes if I am quick enough at the Gateway screen, I can hit F2 or F10 and get into the Setup or to the Boot Menu. The Setup doesn't really help me at all. When I hit F10, everything seems to be looking fine except for one thing that says "No TPM or TPM has problem." I'm not really sure if that means anything since I don't remember whether I saw it any other way before, but it seems like a problem.

So, when it says that there are log messages on the... Read more

This time, the CD spooled up, and I got "windows is loading files..." with the white status bar. Then, I got the green running bar with "microsoft corporation". However, the green only went up the bar once. Then I heard the pop/click sound again and it switched to a dead-end blue screen. the screen was blue except at the top there were little chunks of black. Cant remove, issues reappear often, cannot get into Google.com or known sights that would be obviously safe to surf within them such as foxnews.com and other pages take forever to load or do not load at all, just plain old frustrating, java is messed and files temp downloaded from Java cannot be deleted when performing a disk cleanup, along with ipod/ ishuffle and all Apple software no longer working, so I cannot use iTunes to load songs on to them etc and I had issues deleting AVG7/ Grisoft but I finally did it via Hijack this, using OneCare which is awful, Windows XP Home SP3, I have two logs to post or forward but I was advised not to post the logs before someone asks me to, please let me know ASAP, I believe I have a serious infection, so much so that my hotmail account was hijacked a month ago so I had to change my password and the person used to send medical spam emails to many comcast.com subscribers and God only knows if he/she has stolen any of my personal and confidential information. Also bytes received are so much larger than bytes sent example rcvd 5 million (5,000,000) sent 4 hundred thousand (400,000). Please advise, I am unsure if I can give you my hotmail account via this posting or the log files pertaining to the exact issues for I am new on this site. Also if I have posted in the wrong location please help me post in the proper location. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to TSG

Please click Here to download HijackThis to your desktop.

Click the Download button. When the Trend Micro HJT install box appears, double click on the HJTInstall.exe. Click on Install.

It will be installed by default here: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

A shortcut to the application will also be placed on your Desktop.

The program will open automatically after installation.

You can double-click the icon that was placed on the Desktop to run subsequent HijackThis scans or you can use the icon inside the folder. The folder HijackThis is where you will find the HJT logs that you save. When you use the application to remove anything, you will also find the backup copies made by HJT inside this folder.

Close all other windows except HijackThis.

Click on "Do a system scan and save logfile" When the log pops up in Notepad, copy and paste that file back here.

Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I am feeling lucky since i found this site, i tried everything so im going to cross my fingers and let you help me hopefully.

my desktop is windows xp

i used firefox and internet explorer years ago but both browsers stop working completely, so I have been using google chrome. Problem with google is when I google anything the links redirect me to completely different page from where i was trying to go. when i start up my computer i get a lot of pop up blank screens showing up as hello4 on the tab. They eventually disappear. Also i see other pop up screens that come up and go so fast that i cant see any name or anything for it. google chrome crashes often for example in the last 5 hours crashed about 5-6 times. I also have this strange beetle looking icon on the start bar (task bar) next to the time display, that program is called VERITAS update manager, i cant open it cant delete it cant locate it on add/remove programs. There are many programs i cant recognize on my task manager list and in add/remove programs (tried to remove most), so screens keep popping as im typing which is so annoying because i have to click back on the text box to continue typing. other problem that started happening when all this started was i cant right click with my mouse anywhere, and its not a faulty mouse. Finally i can not shut down my computer normally have to hold down the power button or pull the plug because there are so many hello4 that need to close because it usually pops up hell... Read more

Okay heres the deal. My computer has been having some major issues for a while. The computer place we took it too doesn't even have a clue how to fix it. Alright Doc, heres the symptoms. Every time I try to open up a file folder to explore like My Documents or My Pictures or even A:/ and things of that type...everything on my computer screen dissapears but the wallpaper. Even the taskbar and icons! They come back in about 2 1/2 seconds but I still can't get into those folders. Also whenever I try to open IE7.3 Beta it acts like it doesnt even try to come up. (Lucky I installed Opera a while back.) Those are what I know. Someone please help me. I'll take what I can get. Thanx Y'all !

I've been assigned to fix a computer for a friend, and so far, I've narrowed down a list of problems. I brought it home to continue, but now none of the mouses I use will register. Then there's the other problems.

It's split into 3 accounts, 2 have these problems-
Can't drag/drop/cut/paste/delete icons or folders.
Background and taskbar vanishes on startup. (Solved with starting a new explorer.exe)
No internet
hijackthis can't run
Runs very slowly.

I recall dealing with something similar before, I think it was Vundo, but I'm not too sure. Can anyone help me with this?

Ok, I don't know if this is a virus or malware issue...but I REALLY need help badly. I'm about to format my harddrive, but I want to avoid that step if possible. I have too much stuff and can't back it all up on one 8G flashdrive.

It all started this morning when I was looking for a music file on a torrent site... I didn't even download anything, but immediately I noticed that I was getting pop-ups from a program I use (WinPatrol) that alerted me that new startup programs were attempting to launch ("OLE32 Extensions for Win32") and I quickly clicked "No" (Do not allow) because I had not downloaded anything legitimate and knew it was probably junk. However, my internet slowed to a crawl, each page now takes 5+ minutes to load (or not at all). I was going to reboot, but noticed that by the Shut Down icon there was an "important installation required" shield indicating that Microsoft had updates for me to install upon Shut Down... so I did that. Now I'm thinking that's where I got the virus/trojan/malware...?

I have MalwareBytes's Anti-Malware program but it will not load now, a problem I had before when I had a trojan. As well, System Restore refuses to let me load up old definitions - when I pick a date to restore from, I click the Next button to begin and it just stops there ... refuses to restore. Was able to run HiJack this...attached is the report.

I also got the "blue screen" twice, with the message something to the effect ... Read more

I have been having nothing but issues with my HP. It tells me it won't comunicate with Hp's support center anymore, it won't update anything and when I try there have been times it tells me there's a missing driver and then other times the screen will flip upside down and no matter what I do, or how many times I try to flip it back with CTRL+ALT UP/DOWN it does nothing. I have tried updating to windows 10, 8.1  when they offer it but each and everytime it fails. I can't do a factory reset no matter how hard I try. I have tried almost everything that HP has suggested with no results. I have virus protection so I'm not sure why this continues. So now I have a useless computer. I don't know what to do. I want to just start over and wipe it but  it  keeps reverting back to a certain point. I need some major help or advice.

Hello,

I'm having some major issues with my 2nd hhd. I have my first hdd 40g working fine and my 2nd is a 80g that i call my server drive that had about 65g of stuff on it. I turned my computer on one day and i couldn't find my D: drive. After looking a bit more it was there but didn't have a label and said it needed to be formated. It was NTFS. I'm also having a problem when it boots. Invalid Boot.ini file. I tried booting off my XP cd and it won't let me install the recovery console so i can repair it. After i get the info off my 80g hdd i plain on formating both of them. I really hope i can. I while trying to figure out some information about why it was not showing up i did do a quick format. didn't realize how stupid this could be. My train of thought was well if i did a quick format it would possible see it back as NTFS and see there are still files on it. PLEASE HELP...

About a week ago, my HDD decided to crash on me and I lost my OS and things. It's a user built computer so I just decided to get a new hard drive instead of rebuilding the whole thing and got Windows 7 instead of XP like I had been using. Everything installed up correctly and it works fine in the basic 'boot up and run' sense. But theres a major pair of issues and the are listed below.

1 - When I reboot or start up, sometimes it will immediately go to a System Fixer thing instead of starting Windows, telling me that Windows failed to start. (I don't know if it's actually called System Fixer, but eh.) I have to reboot my computer once, sometimes twice, to actually get it to start Windows properly.

2 - Very few things will install and even fewer will run properly. Anything that requires InstallShield to install is refusing to install and gives me the following Error:

'Setup has experienced an error. Please do the following: Close any running programs. Empty your temporary folder. Check your internet connection. Then try to run setup again. Error Code 6006'.

In place of that particular error, most other programs simply give me this:
'The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance'.

Number 2 is the vexing issue especially, because none of my Drivers or various things will install correct. I'm operating wit... Read more

OK, I see a number of issues;
1 The cpu you have installed is NOT listed as supported on the biostar site. The max TDP is 65W and your cpu is over that value.
2 There are no windows 7 drivers listed for your board at the biostar site. This means that win7 is not supported.

In short you have installed a cpu that is not supported, installed an os that is not supported. When you do this, you are really asking for a problem.

FWIW with a biostar board sometimes you can get away with running a cpu that is not on the supported list however you are in effect a beta tester.

Here is the cpu support page as you can see, no 5400+

Ok i have a almost brand new hp pavilllion g6 notebook pc, its barely been used these last few months besides for the occasional search or email sign in. Recently i downloaded a few programs(utorrent, daemon tools lite, winrar) and 2 torrent games i had installed already on my desktop. My laptops able to run them easily enough at the highest settings and games ran great on the system.

But all of a sudden it started to slow down, i thought maybe it was just the settings straining them but then the entire pc started slowing down, it would only take 2 seconds to start up a program or load a tab now it takes 5-10 and the refresh blue icon keeps popping up for everything i click on regardless. It then says programs are unresponsive or pages but then they load up the very next second.

I tried using system refresh but the computer was still slow and now it's taking longer to boot up also, i tried using restore operations but it keeps saying it failed afterwards then sends me a notice saying system successfully restored once i am on the desktop screen. It recently froze just now when i was trying to write this before.

I also noticed a high disk and memory usage spikes out of know where, and the screen when i try to play medieval 2 total war will only cover have the screen at first before fully covering it, when i'm on my browser the screen background jumps in and out from the screen saver to the purple of the windows 8 app thing out of know where.

Okay, so there's a long story here, but basically I think somehow my ethernet port is fried. Let me explain...

I recently installed the Win7 beta for funsies, all was fine to begin with, but slowly ran into problems, had some major driver issues with my Creative sound card but mostly seemed to overcome them. Anyway, after getting Win7 pretty much fully up and running I mooch off somewhere. I return later to find that Win7 has put the computer into sleep mode, so I click the mouse button and the machine starts to whirr back to life.

Nothing happens though, the machine has clearly realised it's supposed to be coming out of sleep mode but I get nada, the signal to the monitor is fine aswell. So I force restart, no fuss... until windows crashes on startup, and again, and again.

Anyway after this whole deal, and trying to repair the startup with system restore, lastgood and Win7's built in repair feature (with no luck) I decide it is Win7's fault and wipe it completely, cut to about an hour later. I've reinstalled XP Pro no problems. Try to install the ethernet drivers (Attansic Gigabit ethernet drivers, the ethernet port is part of my Asus M2V mobo) and the installer doesn't close...

Basically to put a long story short I've reinstalled Win7 and WinXP about twice each after that incident, and every time I run into massive issues trying to install the drivers for the ethernet port, device manager mostly recognises the hardware and says its run... Read more

I'd possibly look at trying to flash the BIOS of your mobo, go on to ASUS Website and see if there is a more recent version than what you have on your motherboard.

And my tech savvy friend told me to come here.

On the front of my laptop I have a "Wireless communication switch/indicator" since installing XP I have lost my ethernet controllers which I have installed. Now my wireless indicator is not lighting up when I slide it to the right. When searching for wireless networks it says "No wireless networks were found in range. I can connect by using a wired connection to my modem but whilst wired the switch is still not lit up.

I'm kinda confused :l
Windows XP doen't recognise your Ethernet Controllers?
as for your wireless. try searching for another Driver on the Acer Website... they should be able to support you there... else. format your HDD and reinstall Windows XP, then use Microsoft Update via Ethernet..

Well it's all started again... All of a sudden, internet pages wont load properly, portions of pages come up in http, most have to be reloaded several times before they even begin to look like webpages. Firefox started giving me problems about "incorrect message authentication codes" and then "certificates being invalid" then pages being corrupt. When i finally can open a page, it looks nothing like it should, images are a mess - all green and half displayed, half the page comes up in http and the layout is all wrong. My ip assures me there is nothing wrong at their end.
I cannot open anything i download from the net, it tells me it's corrupted. Flash player is also having major issueswhen trying to uninstall/reinstall, there is something wrong with some ocx file or something.
This happened not too long ago, and then it was fine, now it's doing it again. Issue #1 MOST IMPORTANT

I was trying to uninstall my old ati drivers.

I uninstalled them multipul times and restarted many times as well. However nothing changed.

I had to delete some ATI apps and omega apps.

And I disabled the default video controller for windows. Thinking It would just go to default when I restarted at 640x480.

I rebooted and I got raped.
Black screen.

Theres nothing I can think of doing to go back. I tired reinstalling my old video card, but the same result happened. Black Screen.

I tired going into safemode, but upon loading the .sys files it freezes so I can't get into safemode.

I don't fell like reinstalling windows and practically formatting. This is the only solution I can think of ATM.

Please Help!! Thanks in advance.

Hi guys... just joined the board and can say for sure and certain... "you have THE BEST "techie" site around!

Having said that, here's my own lil bundle of dramas...

Please have a go at answering ANY of them for me, but note that "1)" is by far my most urgent one.

1) For the past week I have not been able to access any sites via links in my emails (or hyperlinks I may have cut and pasted onto word docs, or links in PDF files) or in fact 'anywhere' -- EXCEPT through my URL address bar!

The only major things I have done to my PC around a week ago (that may or may not be associated with the problem) is: Downloaded and installed IE 7; Downloaded and installed Microsoft.Net Framework 2.0; downloaded and installed Mozilla Firefox for a couple of days, then uninstalled it again; and 'relaxed' my Internet security settings from medium-high to medium.

2) I've also noticed that I am no longer able to play downloaded flash videos EVEN though I have repeatedly downloaded Macromedia Flash (I've never had this problem before).

3) Since getting rid of Firefox and reverting back to IE 7 I have noticed that any desk-top shortcuts I have created from web site pages I have wanted to save (i.e. home pages of forums for example), no longer show up as IE 7 icons but rather just the bare bones file itself. Whatsmore, when I click on them to open them, I am prompted to determine 'which program I want to use to open them with'... Read more

I am having some strange things going on...It started with the inability to update my McAffee and AIM. Neither would allow me to do so on my daughter's name, but I could do the AIM on mine. But now, I can't install either. I have tried to update IE6 and install IE 7, but am unable to do that either. When I check what version I have running of IE, it is blank. it isn't in my add/remove programs. I thought i would just uninstall and try again... I also have Mozillla running on the computer and it isn't 100%, but I thougth we'd start with the IE for now. As far as following the 5 steps before posting, I am unable to do that because my IE is't working and those fixes arrent' supported by Mozilla. I got as far as removing the "spyware" programs in control panel.

The computer is running windows xp home edition version 2002 with Service Pack 2.

Can you help???

Last night, both of my computers restarted strangely. I woke up and tried to get past my bios screen on one of my computers which I updated last night (updated bios), and restarted it a couple times. It wouldn't do anything so I cleared CMOS and it booted up fine. XP wanted to check the computer for errors in consistency, so I let it. It deleted 10 system files, and around 50 other files. It then let me go into windows, and I noticed, my blue XP scheme was gone, and explorer wasn't starting up, neither was half my other processes, and my mouse wasnt working. I tabbed my way into logging in, and looked at the proccesses when it wasn't loading explorer in full size only 3 mb worth of it. I then tried rebooting, and got the same problem. So I got out my XP cd and tried to repair it, but it didn't give me the option, and said my disk was unknown instead of NTFS. I took out my HD, and moved it into my other computer, and tried to transfer the files. It said that the disk was unknown format or corrupt, so I took it back to my computer, and tried to reformat it. I changed my bios to load from CD, and then went into XP, and let it all load. But strangely my Keyboard was not working, it worked fine on my system bios, but when I reached XP it stopped responding. I rebooted it many times and I got the same encountered problem. I took it back to my other computer and wiped it, and let it load the xp files back on without installing. I got the blue screen of death on booting (different pr... Read more

Gidday,

A friend's PC became so erratic in performance and was chocked with spyware, so I attempted a totally new install of XP Home.

The XP Home is service pack 1 version. Hard drive is a reasonably new 80gb WD. Motherboard and processor are by Gigabyte.

Here's my attempts so far:

Fresh install, including reformat of NTFS - successful
Put chipset drivers on
Try and install Nero Smart Suite (came with DVD burner) - will not install. Gets to copying nero.exe and then comes up with an error message. (Even with the previous hard disk and previous versions of Nero, I had the same problems - strange, eh?)

So..........I thought I would install again....this time.........
Fresh install, including a "quick" reformat. But about 3 minutes from the end, I got the blue screen of death!

So..............I try and install again.
This time, I request a fresh install, create a smaller partition of 40 gig and try and "full" format it. It gets to the 100% counter with the format, and then says it cann not format and that there must be a hard disk problem.

I try again at full partition size - still can not format.

I boot up to a win98 boot disk and carry out "fdisk /mbr" thinking that this may help. I even tried creating some partitions under Fdisk, Win98, and the integrity checks conducted passed 100%

I try reinstalling.........again, can not format.

I try reinstalling again and this time create a very small partition and format it under FAT. Th... Read more

Hiyas

I've had something similar. Turned out to be the RAM. Odd...but i've had it enough times to know it happens. Also try checking the drive on another machine to make double sure that's not the culprit. If at all possible, format and partition the drive on another machine that is known to be good.

Hey guys, so I am only 15 so I am not the best with computers, but I am pretty good. So I've had so many issues with this thing its unreal. Probs had to reset from scratched about 5-7 times so far. So, when i first got it reset this time, everything was great, then my monitors used to have like a pink glint over it so i just turned my monitor off and on and that seem to fix it. A few weeks later, after I had turned my computer on for the first time of the day, everytime, the game would crash and give me a kernel error 3 with my graphics driver. Once I got the error, I opened the game and it ran fine till I turned my pc off and restarted the cycle the next day. a few more weeks past and my recording software, action, was acting up and locking my fps at 45 any game while recording, then that really triggered me and this is why im here. Now here is the last reason that just happened today, randomly, all throughout the day, my computer will black screen and say kernel error or will buzz and freeze and wont recover from this buzzing freeze so I have to restart my computer about 11 times a day. Now this computer gives me a different issue every time I factory reset it so idk i might need to build a new one. Goodbye alienware. but for now I dont have the money to buy parts so if you guys have some kind of remedy for this let me know as soon as possible. THANKS!!!!

Okay I'm completely exhausted and frustrated with this issue. A few weeks ago I decided I wanted to start up a website to find that my original ftp client didn't work and the hosting service was through a friend. Out of interest I got a domain name with godaddy.com and found that not only could I not connect with their ftp client but I could not connect with three other external ones. Through the course of this issue I have called godaddy.com, verizon, and dell and stil I have not been able to find the answer. Supposedely there's something on my end that is preventing me from connecting to these websites...I really need some help with this and I would be extremely grateful for serious help with this. I have running Home Premium and there's just something I can't seem to see.

A:Major FTP Issues

Hi, Phenom4ever, and welcome to the forums.

First of all, a question: You bought a domain *name* - did you buy hosting from a hosting site and update your MX records to reflect that? If so, have you enabled FTP access through your hosting solution provider?

You've really given us an incomplete picture, as we may start out be telling you that you cannot connect to a nonexistent physical site, regardless of how many domain names you buy, but there is a lot more to it - when you find a place to host it, you will also need to make sure the site is *active* and not parked, I ran into that one for a bit with GoDaddy, and then there is your hosting solution provider as well.

Also of note it would be very beneficial to know if you can connect to it from another computer / another connection.

Finally, it would be nice to know if you're using FTP or SSH - because at one point in time, the 'free' site I had with 1and1.com that offered 3 years for free to whet our appetites all of a sudden stopped working - and I thought it was my router going bad, so I contacted D-Link and got a new router - and ti worked again.

Hello,

Please bear with me as I'm far from advanced in terms of technicalities of software.

My 2 major issues are as follows:

1) My computer often plays random sounds + audio clips. These include things such as adverts, sex noises, comedy noises, tribal music or horror music. (None of these are from any audio file I have)

2) At random times my monitor will go into standby, the sound that is currently playing stays on a 1 second loop and then the computer auto restarts. Sometimes it will do this every 10 minutes when i turn the desktop on other times i can go a day or two without a problem. (Not sure if this is a virus/malware or another problem)

3) Just a final minor issue is that in my web browser hyperlink adverts appear on various words, Id like this removed too if poss.

if there is anything else you need just ask

Pete

Thanks, the logs are below:

Having a major issue here...

I was playing Mass Effect 2 when the colors changed, the game stuttered, and then my PC crashed. I caught a glimpse of a pop up bubble before it shut off though, that said something about 'display' and 'disabled' (sorry, I didn't catch more than that )

It looks like my graphics card died or something... at first it would only boot up in to safe mode, so I uninstalled the display drivers, and I can get into my PC. If I reinstall the driver though, it freezes, and then reboots when I start up the PC. The BIOS screen is messed up too; words are jumbled, and there are random symbols all over the place. Some black screens before startup are covered in blue or red dots. I really have no idea what is wrong and I could really use some help.

My Specs:
Windows 7 64-bit
Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT
4GB RAM
Intel Core2 Duo E6850 3.00GHz

If you need any other information, please let me know. I really appreciate any help.

Not sure if this helps, but this is the screen I get before the 'Starting Windows' screen: http://imgur.com/KMbCG.jpg
