Computer Problem with Internet, connection is not the problem [moved from ie]

Q: Computer Problem with Internet, connection is not the problem [moved from ie]

When I go on my computer (dell xps labtop, running windows xp) , my internet works fine, however some websites will not load. Websites such as facebook, yahoo, and myspace will not load while other websites such as this one will. Google only works if I search something immediatly after I open the browser, after waiting a couple minutes it will no longer work. When these sites get stuck at loading the bar at the bottum of the screen remains at the beginning. I use Internet Explorer and firefox, and the problem exists in both. My internet is working fine and there are no firewall problems, or any security problems as well. I'm not very knowledgable with computers so please keep your answers simple

Please Help!!

I've been having this problem for weeks now. I have a cable connection and a wireless router that plugs right into the computer, which happens to be the one I'm having a problem with (the laptops work fine with the wireless internet, only the computer is screwed up).

When I try going to websites such as AOL.com and MySpace (Only about half of the websites I visit will work), I know the internet connects bc it says "AOL - Welcome to AOL" and shows the logo in the search bar, but does not display. Just sits there...and loads, and loads and loads.

Also, for no reason my Flash player is gone all this sudden after this problem has been happening. And guess what? Adobe.com won't load so I can't reinstall it, but flash player is still listed in the "Add of Remove programs" list!
What could be the problem and what can I do to fix it?

A:[SOLVED] Computer Problem with Internet, connection's not the problem

Hi Brian2570...

it could be a malware issue..have you checked for any infections recently?

If after doing the above and you're sure you system is clean, perhaps try connecting to those sites with your firewall temporarily disabled?

Also, have a look in your HOSTS file for any added entries such as Adobe, AOL and MySpace:

- Click Start -> Run -> type:
notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
- Click Ok
- That will open the hosts file in notepad...if it's quite large, try using the Edit -> Find feature to search for the entries.

Post back if you find any...or not please

I think there is something wrong with my computer because the internet connection speed seems perfect when tested, but the problem is that no web pages open. How can I figure out what's wrong with the computer? Right now I'm on safe mode and I have perfect connection and all the websites open. For some reason, the upload speed is not what it should be in normal mode

A:Problem With Computer/internet Connection

Try the following general fixes.Log on as an administrator, go Start > Run and type: "cmd". In the window that appears type: "netsh winsock reset". When the program is finished, you will receive the message: "Successfully reset the Winsock Catalog. You must restart the machine in order to complete the reset." Close the command box and reboot your computer.Go Start > Run > type: "cmd" In the window that appears type: "ipconfig /flushdns". Close the command box.Go Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. Right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and and choose Properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item. Select the radio button that says "Obtain DNS servers automatically". Reboot. Warning: Some Internet Service Providers need specific DNS settings. You need to make sure that you know if such DNS settings are required before you make this change.

I have a problem with my internet connection lately from just one computer in my house. When dloading from emule even if its a small amount, I lose the ability to browse or connect with any other program. I have also noticed when using Firefox browser that when a separate tab is downloading a page the browser hangs for a second while it waits for that page to load. I dont notice any of these problems on my second computer.

I noticed these problems after trying to HOST files for IP blocking. I followed the Wilders Security Post http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=78363 on blocking host IPs but I dont know if I messed up or what went wrong.

1) While I didnt save my host file when I copied the BISS host file, I think the generic (127.0.0.1 localhost) would be fine right? That is what I am using now for my host file.

2) I also altered Run > services.msc > DNS Client Properties in order to work with the big host file. I had set it to disabled but I now set it to automatic once I went back to the 127.0.0.1 localhost file. I am also not sure if I also altered the DHCP Client Properties on accident but that is also set to automatic.

I tried searching the internet for answers but cant find any, so if you can help me your awesome.

Thanks

This is just a guess, but try restricting the number of ports that emule can run on with your firewall or in emules configuration. If that doesn't work, switch to shareaza, which interacts with the edonkey, gnutella, gnutella2 and bittorrent networks.

Hello everyone.
I registered to the forum cause i am encountering a problem with my old internet's connection speed on a new computer.

I have a 2mbs internet connection which has been enough for me for the past few years. Problem is that since i bought a new desktop my connection is extremely slow, youtube videos lag almost instantaneously even on 360p (which didn't happen with the same connection on my old desktop). Moreover, downloading from firefox or programs like origin speed seems not to go above 15 or 20 kbps while on my old desktop it reached its limit around 210kbps. As you understand this is extremely annoying, i am suspecting that the problem is hardware related. I am using a modem (the one my isp provided) and an ethernet cable to my desktop. Additionally i am using windows firewall and Microsoft security essentials.

I would appreciate your advices and knowledge in order to understand whats causing my internet being so slow...

A:Internet connection speed problem on a new computer.

Moreover even if i open a youtube video and freeze it in order to stream, it does not. And i should also mention that its almost impossible to run a speedtest.net test, it keeps saying 'configuration load failed' an error occured while loading speedtest.net. Please try again and let us know if it continues to happen.
After a few tries it does work but the results are very very wrong

These results should be around 2mb's not 0.50 somethings definitely very wrong....

Hello All,
Last night my anti-spyware/malware program, ESET Smart Security, suddenly caught 3 trojans. I don't even remember the site I had been looking at; I was admittedly just surfing the net without paying much attention. After the trojan alerts, every time I attempted to go to a different website, the page said 'Connection interrupted/Connection was interrupted while negotiating a connection.' There were no pop-ups, and no system tray/desktop icons appeared. When I noticed ESET's alerts, I immediately disconnected from the internet and began running the program's spyware sweep. It found only four "infiltrations," which were cleaned and removed by the program. But, when I attempted to re-launch Firefox, the page said 'Connection interrupted/Connection was interrupted while negotiating a connection' once again, even though my Network Connection information said my computer was connected to the internet at 100 Mbps. So I re-ran ESET, and it didn't find anything.
Finally, I decided to use ComboFix, since I've used that program in the past with great results. I let the program do its thing, and waited until it was completely finished before trying to use Firefox again. The exact same message appeared for every website I tried to go to: 'Connection interrupted/Connection was interrupted while negotiating a connection.' The next thing I know, the computer acts as though it's all tied-up/lagging, and then a blue screen ca... Read more

I have a computer here with XP home edition. The computer will not connect to microsoft.com or any microsoft website but it connects to other sites just fine. MSN and other com software seems to be working fine as well. I've done the AVAST BART AV scan outside of the Windows environment and found many viruses. I had them all deleted but the problem still remains. I've tried running the network config with no effect. I'm attaching a Hijackthis log tho I don't see anything suspicious.

Hello, so I just got a new ISP yesterday and everything seemed to be working fine, until today. I haven't made any changes (no new updates on security/anti-virus programs). I have wireless internet access (it says it's connected and the diagnose tool can't identify a problem). My main browser is Chrome, but I have Internet Explorer and Firefox. For all three browsers, I can't connect to any websites, except for MSN.com. I have enabled cookies for Chrome, deleted the cache, and have added that program to my firewall's list of accepted programs, and it still won't load pages. However, programs like Spotify, Hulu Desktop, VLC updates, etc that need an internet connection work fine (also, I saved a session in chrome of opened tabs from yesterday and they loaded perfectly fine, but if I try and type them in a new window, they won't load). I have an ethernet cable too, but I don't understand how the programs that need an internet connection work (ex: Spotify radio, Skype,), but my browsers won't.

I don't know if these programs have anything to do with my browsing problem, but I have: CCleaner, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials), and I recently removed McAffee. For my firewall program, I just have Windows Firewall with Advanced Security

Hello,

Well first off I just recently built my new PC with new parts and installed them carefully while discharging any static electricity i may have built up. Installed Windows 7 on it and for the first few days it ran like a dream. Soon got "amd drivers not responding" messages popping up and freezing my game and occasional blue screens and involuntary restarts with no messages. After troubleshooting online I replaced my ATI graphics card with a Geforce EVGA and the computer went back to working like a dream. Now during a week I had 1 instance of a blue screen and got the message "system service exception" not much else since it restarted. A few restarts, no messages or warning, along with 1 time of freezing the computer. However I get a lot of pop ups saying "soso" has stopped working and resets it, it ranges from explorer, desktop, games, dreamweaver, word. And the most common thing i get is when i play World of Warcraft Cataclysm I get disconnect because of a critical error. I tried to find a pattern of when these happen but its all random even with WoW. Most recent BSOD had the message "memory management"
I tried doing research on this but get nothing where someone had all these symptoms. But to knock out the common treatments.

What is "soso"? Is it an app you installed?

Is Windows 7 a full retail version?

I am seeking advice here to solve a problem with internet connection on my laptop.
The laptop (Thinkpad X61 running 32 bit Vista) seems to be ok to connect to my router, which is connected to a cable modem. Internet is also connected on the base level (more details below). However Internet Explorer (or firefox, opera) cannot find any web page, and Mozilla Thunderbird email program cannot connect to email server.
I am decently ok with computers, so I have run some checks myself. This is not a problem of router or cable modem, as my other computers can access internet through the same router and modem. Also, the laptop gets an IP address from the router and can connect to shared resources on other computers within the same network.
The laptop also finds outside addresses and get a response when I run ping command, e.g. ping www.google.com or ping www.yahoo.com, suggesting that the connection to DNS server is fine at the base level.
I was suspecting that windows firewall, my Symantec antivirus or VPN is creating the problem. But the problem persists after I disabled firewall and the antivirus software and deleted VPN connection.
One important thing to mention is that this problem starts when after a software install, which I removed afterwards. I tried to run netsh reset by "netsh winsock reset catalog", "netsh int ipv4 reset myreset.log" and "netsh int ipv6 reset myreset.log" and restart. Still does not work.

Hello everyone,
I have an internet connection problem and was wondering if anyone here can help.
I cannot connect to the internet even though all the green lights on the modem are solid and steady. I have a laptop connects (ethernet cable) to the modem (which connect to the ISP). I ask my ISP support to verify my IP address and my modem mac address and they check out good. (I have an XP OS, IE, firefox, and opera web browsers, and a cable modem connection to the ISP - all three browsers cannot connect to the internet.) I can ping the yahoo and google websites and my loopback address, but cannot access these websites via my browsers. I look in the TCP/IP protocol properties and they're all set to automatically obtain the address. I also tried to manually configure the ip address, the sub mask, the dns servers, and the default gateway (first in the general tab, then in the alternate configuration tab) to the ones I found the network connections detail. I tried the ping, ipconfig, and netstat commands to try figuring out the problem but no luck.
Has anyone comes across this problem?

Any help and advices are much appreciated.
Thx in advance.

Hello TSF, I come in need of help regarding my internet connection.
As of late (roughly 2 days ago) I've been randomly getting a "Firefox cannot connect to server" but after about 5 seconds or so of refreshing finally makes it work. I tried on Internet Explorer with the same result. Even my ipod touch that uses safari (and wireless) acts up. My desktop uses an ethernet wired modem while my ipod uses wireless.

The only things I have done in the past were; changing my wireless to WPA2-PSK [AES] from a different one so my sisters laptop would connect. I also downloaded some songs, but I doubt it has to do with anything. Thanks.

I'm using IDM 5.19 build 3 in may DELL Studio 14 using Windows 7. Recently I cannot finish my downloads. When I start the queue the speed will be around 200kbps but after a few seconds the speed fluctuates and becomes slower. The speed becomes 5kbps or slower.

Is this my internet connection or IDM?

I check my old laptop using Vista with the same connection. I don't see this problem. Also I tried downloading using the browser (no IDM) and the speed is consistent 200-250 kbps.

Help badly needed. Thanks in advance.

The weirdest things are happening on my pc
My Local disk C and D has moved right to the bottom of the list in My Computer.
Nothing is wrong with them, I can access them , but they just decided one day to move to the bottom of the list. Where can I move them back to where they belong, naughty drives..
And don't know if this might be related to the same little problem, but my internet connection disappears every now and then.
I can't find it anywhere, have to reboot to get it back. By this
i mean the actual icon to connect to the internet.
It's not even in my network places. I run DSL, but have set it up so I connect as if it was dial up ( so I can connect and disconnect as i please)
It's been happening more and more often, sometimes I have to reboot two times in a row to get it to come back, most annoying..

Greetings,

Keep getting this error message when I type out 'ipconfig /all' in command line interface: an internal error occurred the request is not supported. Here's some background info:
- About a month ago my friend was complaining of a very slow machine
- I logged into Safe Mode with Networking
- Downloaded and ran both Malwarebytes and Spybot Search & Destroy
- Found a bunch of stuff and cleaned them
- Restarted system, downloaded and updated Microsoft Security Essentials and ran it successfully
- Downloaded and purchased PC Cleaner Pro and ran it successfully
- Cleaned out all Temp folders
- Update Java and other out-of-date apps
- Ran Defrag

It seemed to solve her problems and her system was running very well and she was very happy.

Two days ago she complained that she no longer can get internet connection and none of her malware nor virus protections were working. So with no network connection to update her current software here's what i've done so far:
1) Downloaded SuperAntiVirus, Malwarebytes, and Spybot Search & Destory softwares from another computer, loaded it onto the infected computer and ran them in Safe mode. Found a ton of stuff like Trojans, HVCHOST-FAKE and other cookies but this did not fix it.

Hi all, we started having problems with our connection a couple of weeks ago. We were not always able to connect to the internet, and often had to unplug the modem and restart it before it would connect. Then the computer was not able to display web pages, but could download by peer to peer and could download emails.

Eventually we got our ISP to send out another modem, thinking that this was the problem. However, now it is not able to connect to the internet at all.

I have not changed any settings and have checked as much as I can that there's nothing wrong. The connection settings are set to automatic.

I have also used the command prompt to ping www.google.co.uk, and this is coming back ok.

I have also tried changing the plugs around in the back of the PC, as there are two ethernet cables, but again nothing works!!

Does anyone have any idea, as we had a friend around the other night and he seems to think that the computer will have to be wiped completely and that seems very over the top!!

Any help will be much appreciated.

The laptop in question is Windows XP home OS.

It is able to connect to the router wirelessly without limited connectivity. There are no problems with the router since two other laptops are able to use the internet. I tried giving static ip's and doing other ipconfig stuff. I even tried connecting through cable and still the same problem.

Heard it is a virus and i've used AVG 8.5 to remove any threats but is still not working.

I have an annoying problem, although not critical, that won’t go away. This problem seems to have manifested itself since I installed Avira Premium Security Suite. I do like this application. The AV protection is second to none (my personal opinion) and the firewall is adequate for my needs.

My OS is Microsoft Windows XP Professional and I connect to the internet via a Netgear wireless router through Sky Broadband ISP with a SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter. The router has only been installed for 8 months. I use Internet Explorer as my browser.

The problem is that, sporadically, I lose my connection to the internet (the usual web page not available) but when I check my Local Area status, it always shows as ‘connected’. A quick fix for this problem is to reboot my computer on the occasions that connection is lost and always, my internet connection is restored.

I visited the Avira support forum and, on looking at various threads, did the following :

Did a complete and clean uninstall and reinstallation of Avira Premium Security Suite. Everything seemed fine after this for a few days.
Ran the WinsockxpFix
Ran the LSPFix

The Winsockfix disabled my online protection in Avira!
The LSPFix restored my online protection in Avira.

However, the problem of intermittent lost internet connections still prevails.

I have used several (Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware, Avira AV) scanning processes but my computer is clean from malware, adware, viruses etc. I also, every oth... Read more

A:Problem With My Internet Connection

First off, those two fixes are not current for XP SP2 or SP3. The full and correct fix for those versions of XP is:

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, pe type the following commands:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

Second, if Avira is causing issues like this, I have to believe that I'd be considering a different protection suite.

A:'95 internet connection problem

Welcome to TechSpot

That computer is almost antique, with W95 on it!
Do everybody a favour, and install Windows 98SE on it instead. It probably won't take anything "stronger" than that. W98SE needs at least 64MB memory, better is 128 or 256. No more than that!

Sort out the drivers for that PC from the manufacturers of the motherboard, graphics card, modem and any other cards, by downloading them from the respective websites.

Then wipe the old HD and freshly install W98SE, with all the drivers you found, and don't let AOL get NEAR that PC. You can now sign up to any ISP you like, wether dialup or cable.

Hello Johnnywalker46,

What type connection are you using (Cable,DSL,etc) ?

Are you suing a router?

Click Start > Run > type devmgmt.msc

When Device Manager opens make sure that all Drivers are installed and there are no

conflicts (? or ! beside the entries). Make sure that your Network Adapter is installed.

Hi everyone.

I just joined yesterday in hopes of finding a solution to a problem I was having connecting to the internet. Bad luck turned into good luck today. It's fixed.

I thought it would be good to share with everyone what the fix was.

I had already sent an e-mail, a couple days ago, to HP to describe what was happening and give some test results from diagnostics that I ran. They said it sounded like a hardware problem.

I have an HP pavillion Model a1268c with XP Home Center Edition 2005.

I ran more tests and responded to HP again with more questions. They sent me a detailed procedure to go through. One of the procedures was to uninstall the etnernet enumerator driver and reinstal it. That was the culprit. I have no idea why it quit. I have run virus and adware scans using Spy sweeper, Avast, McAfee and Avira. They found nothing. By the way, I don't run all of these concurrently.

I didn't want to include the whole routine and clutter up this note. I would be more than happy to share all of it with anyone who wants to know the details. I think when I signed up I opted for my e-mail address to be available. I am by no means an expert but I sure do know more now than I did.

Well...a complete detail of your solution...would probably be more valuable and time-saving to present/future readers...than a partial, to be followed up by emails, IMO.

Have you seen how long some of our posts here are ? We don't necessarily strive for brevity, but most of us favor the whole story.

Hello, my problem is very annoying and I have not yet found help to it. I have a WLAN 3mbps internet connection in my cellphone that I use with my PC. I play MMO games and surf the net quite a lot. After 3 months usage I have started to notice a problem: randomly (many times a day) the connection somehow drops and I cannot access any websites ("Chrome couldn't connect to youtube.com" for example). Simply I cannot do anything that includes internet with my PC, but however with my cellphone that is in the same room I can access any website normally ( and they basically use the same connection). For the 3 months this never happened, but now it has started happening more and more. The connection drops more often and for longer times. (started as timeouts, now the connect losses last 5-10mins).
I use windows 7 (32bit). My phone/pc are away from distraction causing devices such as microwave. No one else in my family uses this same connection and I don't even have neighbours who use it. I've even contacted my internet provider and they say there are no fails in the connection, so it must be in my pc. I've reinstalled and updated my network adapter drivers and changed my NIC. As a side note, the connecion started as fast as it should be, but now it lurks around 0,5-1mbps. That doesn't bother me, but I just want a stable connection. Also yes I know WLAN isn't good for playing games but it's really the only option I got. I don't know i... Read more

I have problems with my internet connection. After half an hour or more, i am unable to browse the web. The web browser shows that "website found, waiting for reply." The web pages do not load though, no matter what web browser I try. However, all my other programs can still connect to the web. For example, I was able to run Windows update and download an optional update. (I am right now on my virtual machine posting to this forum.)

After a restart, everything was fine, but the problem would always occur again. It does not happen to my windows 7 (I dual boot), but only to Vista.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

Vista Home Premium 32 bit
AMD X64 Processor
Dell Dimension C521

A:Internet Connection Problem

I have a similar problem on my laptop. When I turn it on it works fine and after 15 - 20 min it looses connection and unable to reconnect unless I restart.

I have tried just about everything suggested by HP to resolve the problem however nothing has worked.

Computer does not list ANY wireless networks once it looses connection and the system starts acting up (slow response to open network window or Office document not responding).

suggestions?

Thanks

I am having internet connection problems on several machines. I can connect to the LAN and to our other building (across a microwave link) but can not connect to the internet.

I don't have this problem with all the machines. Just a couple. The mystifing part is that they are all on different platforms using different versions of IE (5.0, 5.5 and 6.0). I have one each on Win95, Win98, WinNT and Win2000. The Win2000 machine is a laptop that does connect in our other building but not here. The actual internet connection is in the other building. We do connect through a firewall to the microwave connection.

I have tried using Netscape, thinking that it was an IE problem. This did not fix it. I have tried reloading IE. No luck. I have tried deleting and reinstalling TCP/IP, the NIC (3Com) and communication software. No luck.

It seems to be a registry problem but I am new to editing registry items and am wary of deleting anything in there. I tried to delete the Winsock registry keys but couldn't find them.

I'm hope that the members might be able to help - you were able to help others. All the things I've tried are from this board. Maybe I've missed something.

Thanks for listening and for your help.

I'm having an issue getting on the internet. When i open explorer it comes up with the web page can not be displayed screen, and when i run the network diagnostic it comes up saying it can not connect to the internet using HTTP, HTTPS and FTP. Says it is probably due to the firewall. I have turned off the firewall and still get the same error. Thanks for any and all help.

A:Internet connection Problem

Sounds like it could be a Winsock problem.

Here’s how to reset your winsock in windows XP / 200(x)
1. Open the command prompt
2. Type in “netsh winsock reset” (without the quotes)
3. After resetting winsock, Restart your computer.
That’s it, you have successfully reset your winsock.

Hello,

I am a newby to this forum so bear with me. I have done a search on my connection problem and found a thread by Nerdboy1 that seems to go in my direction. I have a Linksys WRT54GS router connected to my pc which provides wireless support to my kids pcs upstairs. Everything was working fine until a week ago when my LAN reported "limited or no conductivity." I have reset the router and used the router's EasyLink tool to no avail. My DSL modem is working fine. When trying to connect I always get an error message or the connection cannot obtain the address. I am pasting the ipconfig/all report I have just obtained. Perhaps someone can make sense of this since it is a bit beyond my capabilities.

A:Internet connection problem

Hey tetterip. Since the wireless connection to another pc is fine, it's not the ISP connection. Did you have this same slow connection issue before you formatted the drive and reinstalled the OS?.If you did, did you install the correct and latest driver for your LAN adapter?. If you can get your hands on a test router for a 15 minutes or so, that should tell you weather the issue is in the router or with your pc and it's wired connection. Eliminate things one by one.
1) Try a different port on the router
2) Try a new Ethernet cable
3) Connect the other pc to the same router port using an Ethernet cable.Turn off the wireless adapter on the pc first. If you still have the same slow connection going to the same web sites you connected to wirelessly on this pc, then something is awry with your router. I myself would reset it to factory specs first and secure the router's wireless settings. If it still doesn't work normally, I would see if there is a firmware update for the router
4) If your connection was fine after you formatted the drive but has since slowed down, go into device manager, find your network adapter, right click on it and uninstall it. Reboot the system and when it comes ready after it finds your hardware, check the connection.

Hi.

I just installed Windows 7 RC 7100. Everything was just working fine. One day, after I restarted the computer, it couldn't connect to the internet. I opened the Network and Sharing Center and there was two networks (Home and Public, when should be just Home). The internet works if I disable and enable again the network adapter.

This don't happen when I hibernate, just when I reboot.

I use Cable internet (Motorola SBV5121 modem) and a Marvel Yukon 88E8040 network adapter.

I already updated the adapter driver.

Does anyone has a clue of what's happening ?

Hello,

I have an old laptop that runs Windows 2000 and until 2 days ago, the Internet was working just fine on it.
2 days ago, it stopped working. After trying several things, I phoned the hotline for the Internet provider, and they said my connection is working just fine.
The modem is linked to a router, and as a matter of fact, the Internet is working. I brought back my laptop from work, and I can connect to the Internet. It's only my old laptop that cannot have access to the Internet at all. I tried several things on it: the IP address displays fine, I can ping the server, etc. I really don't understand why suddenly it doesn't work.
can anyone help?

Thanks!

ok heres the problem. I just got a newer computer about 2 weeks ago. i got it home and everything was fine as far as connecting to the internet. after about a week however the speed at which my modem was connecting was only about 37.8 - 40.0 rather than the normal 50.0k. i didnt really worry too much because it didnt really affect my internet that much. however the past few days, the internet only connects at 30.0k. And if i can even open my homepage it only stays on for 5 to 10 minutes before the link to my ISP is disconnected. I installed a new modem thinking it was a hardeware issue and that did not work I have a Gateway 310s running on XP pro and my ISP is Nuvox. i would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thanks

I am working on a Windows 98 computer where in dial up networking we are able to connect, now able to ping by name and ip but are unable to bring anything up in a browser. Previously we were unable to connect at all and then unable to ping by name but we have uninstalled tcp/ip and the dial up networking component in add remove programs and this is where we are at. It is pulling the dns servers ok and hence we are able to ping and get name resolution. However, we are unable to telnet over port 80 to www.yahoo.com. I do not think this is a browser issue, there are no proxies or anything else that seem to be causing this.

Any other ideas what in tcp/ip or any other programs could be causing this?

My internet connection has some issues. I'm using an HP Laptop running Windows 7 (64-bit).
I use a Wireless connection.
Most of the time, when I try downloading something, the download starts off fine, but soon stops before the file has finished downloading.
For example, I was trying to download a file today, and less than a minute into the download, my download speed started dropping, and while the speed was dropping, I could see that the file was no longer downloading. Eventually, the speed dropped to a negligible amount, and then the download showed an error - "The file was taking too long to download, so the network stopped it", or something like that.
This is what happens to almost all my downloads. Sometimes cancelling the download and downloading again does the trick, but I might need to do this a few times. It's really frustrating.
I hope someone can help me out here.

I recently upgraded from windows XP to windows 7 x64 and since then have noticed a dramatic decrease in the speed of my internet connection - speedtest.net shows my connection fluctuating anywhere from .5 to 5 Mbps whereas before i upgraded i was getting 10-15. The strange bit is that the decreased performance was there right after i installed windows, even before installing anything else on my system. The problem seems to persist even in safe mode w/ networking. It only affects my download speed. my ping is low and upload speed remains the same as it was with XP.

Im using a D-Link WDA-2320 NIC connecting to a D-Link WBR-2310.

Ive been looking for a solution for this all over. anyone have any idea whats going on?

Hi there,

My internet connection works ok with windows xp but every time i boot with vista and try to connect it fails. Diagnose says "Cannot communicate with Primary DNS Server"

My connection’s adapter is manually configured and have a VPN connection to access the internet.

Disabled firewall and others which might interfere with connection. Also disabled all unnecessary items in the "Local Area Connection Properties".

then tried

“netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled”

did not work

Funny thing is my NOD32 antivirus is able to update perfectly but nothing else works!!!

Any suggestions?

Ok. I have a IBM thinkPad laptop. Here is the problem I have.

I have been trying to get it to connect to the internet wireless for some time.

When I tried to connect the page would redirect to http://localhost:9100/proxy.pac. I researched this and all problems pointed to the Google Accelerator that was installed. The only real option seemed to uninstall it. I uninstalled the program and the pages no longer redirect, however the http://localhost:9100/proxy.pa is still shaded out in the LAN settings under AUTO Config script. I do not have this checks and its set to Auto Detect. (IE7). The computer connects to the router with a strong signal but still does not connect to the internet.

Here is the strange thing I have found. I have a Sprint Air Card that allows me to dial into the internet anywhere I have cell service. When I put the card into the laptop the internet works fine.

I have tried using IE7, Firefox, and Google chrome and none of them will browse the internet.

So to recap, I can not connect to the internet via my wireless router but can via my Sprint Air Card. I do not want to alway use this card and want to use my home network.

Can anyone help me please?

My computer is about 5 years old and is beginning to show signs of wear.  The other day it started to have problems connecting to the Internet.  It is connected directly to the router via a cable, although it is not the main connection. (Hope that made sense.)

I would get a message that an a network cable was disconnected, although it was connected.  I disconnected and then connected it again and it would work.  But it was doing this more and more. I wasn't sure it this was my computer or the cable, so I attached the cable to my laptop, after disconnecting the wireless connection, and it worked fine.  That led me to think that the problem was my computer.

But then the wireless connection stopped working as well. I couldn't connect to my network on my cell phone, my tablet, or my laptop. I called my service provider, who told me to unplug both the router and the modem and then plug them back in.  That took care of it.  I was able to connect again.

However, this continues to happen. My computer keeps periodically alerting me that a local network cable is disconneted, when it's not. At times when I check the network connection on my phone, it will say that my home network is not in range, when of course it is.

There is clearly a problem, but I don't know where it is.  I can't afford to buy a whole new system (thanks to ACA, my work hours were just cut in half), so I'd like to pinpoint the problem.  I'm thin... Read more

A:Internet Connection Problem

Generally...the "network cable is unplugged" message happens because of:

a.  The cable IS unplugged or loosened at either end.

b.  The signal from the router to the cable connection via the modem...has a problem at some junction.

c.  The ISP has a problem that interrupts service to customers.

For me...it's generally A that produces this message .  But I've also had a router flameout on me and same message resulted.

You have to check both the router...and the modem...since modems die...to determine which is the problem.  You do this by eliminating the router from the equation and attaching directly from modem to a given system.  That's how I knew that my router needed replacement.

I just went to Amazon, ordered a $20-25 broadband router, which came a few days later...my problem was resolved.  You don't jhave to spend more money on a router, although some seem to think it makes a difference (I do not).

On a 4-port router...all ports are equal...there is no primary .

Try this?WinSock XP Fix offers a last resort if your Internet connectivity has been corrupted due to invalid or removed registry entries. It can often cure the problem of lost connections after the removal of Adware components or improper uninstall of firewall applications or other tools that modify the XP network and Winsock settings. If you encounter connection problems after removing network related software, Adware or after registry clean-up; and all other ways fail, then give WinSock XP Fix a try. It can create a registry backup of your current settings, so it is fairly safe to use. We actually tested it on a test machine that was having a Winsock problem due to some Adware removal, and after running the utility and rebooting, the connectivity was restored.http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.htmlIt will work on all versions of Windows.

What is the make and model # of your computer?
Go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager do you see any devices with yellow flags? If so, then you need to install drivers for these. On an internet computer go to the computer manufacturer's support/download drivers site. Type in your Make and Model# or your service tag # and download the Network Adapter driver and any other drivers you need from the Device Manager and save them to a USB Flash Drive. then transfer them over to the troubled computer.
Once you have all of your drivers installed. Update to XP SP3

I'm having problem with XP SP2 and another of my relative who has 2000 Pro trying to connect to internet. The problem arose after applying grc freeware utilities on both of these machines: leaktest-1, noshare, sockettome, shoothemess, optout, UnPnP, dcombob, socektlock, ID Serve and Windows-KB83330-ENN, on XP I get RPC server is not available. I have ZA, XP's f/w, AVG, which I have toggled to on/off, to see if it will fix the problem

I'm guessing grc's utilities has blocked or altered TCP/IP settings. Can it be undone. I have already tried netsh and winsock.

On 2000 I get something to the effect that network interface had problem, reboot the machine. On this m/c I have tried uninstalling network adapter and reinstalling, rebooting, but no success.

Kindly provide your suggestions and help in the matter !

Here's the deal. A friend of mine's computer had problems connecting to the internet so he asked me to come by and help. He is connected through a wireless linksys router and both computers have XP. He said that about two weeks ago his internet stopped working when some message came up saying that someone else had his IP address, or something of that nature. It said that he was receiving a signal but he could not connect to the internet. I checked his TCP/IP settings and there was nothing listed under any of the ip or dns addresses. So I replaced his winsock registries, disabled DHCP and let NetBIOS override, gave him a static IP address, diabled LMHOSTS lookup, did the netsh ip reset, and spyware scanned his computer (although not in that order). I also went to the computer with the router and made sure that XP's firewall was turned off. Now at some point after this his internet connection started working, great.

Then he calls me the next day and says it isn't working. So today I go over and to check and he's right. Now it used to say that he had two internet connections, a Local Area 6 that was 'unplugged' and his 'Wireless Connection 2', which is what I used last time. This time though, there was a third connection. It was just labled '8af7'. Also when I went to select the different connections it kept telling me that the connections weren't WEP enabled and that they weren't secure. If I try to connect thro... Read more

I have some more information...

The computer with the internet problem is a...
HP Notebook PC
Windows XP
Intel Celeron 1.20GHz
480MB RAM
Linksys Instant Wireless Network PC Card V3.0

Also, there are now 4 wireless internet connections it is showing me. They are called, default, Wireless, 8fa7, and linksys. None of them seem to work although at times they show some signal strength. Like the linksys was showing me a link quality of 6% and a signal strength of 20%. Also the 8fa7 connections requires that I enter a Network key (WEP) although I have no idea what it is.

I am going to go back over there (he lives across the street) and throw every program I know at it. See what I come up with. In the mean time any advice would be great.

My computer have the maximum speed 1MBps/1MBps.

Where is the possible error in Windows XP or is possible that the error is in the Ethernet card?

If you are talking about downloading files at 1mbps and uploading at 1mbps the speed of your laptop may be effecting the download/upload.

With those specs I wouldn't think that you would have a very fast read/write speed and so that may be limiting the speeds and to fix that you would need to upgrade the laptop (looking at that CPU, you would probably need a new computer).

My husband and I both have laptops, mine in the study and his in the bedroom. We are within 30 feet of each other and share a wifi signal. The cable modem and router are located beside my desk in the study. This setup has worked well for over 2 years and then all of sudden his laptop's connection speed dropped to .44 mbs download and .20 mbs upload yesterday. Right after I checked his connection speed, I ran a speed test from the same site (speakeasy.net) and got 17+ mbs download and 1.22 upload.

My initial thought was that the wireless connection inside of his laptop was failing, but I tried connecting him to the Verizon mobile hot spot that we use while traveling and it worked fine. I was also able to successfully send a request to the printer located here in the study using his wireless connection.

One thing we did notice is that both of our laptops are showing a yellow triangle on our connection icon when we open up the wireless connection window.

Any thoughts?

A:Internet connection problem

Hello,
That dreaded triangle surely states you need to either reset router, diagnose connection issues (Win7 troubleshooter,) or you have a new nasty program causing issues with your network. Apple's Bonjour (ITunes/Quicktime) always kills my connection.

My internet has suddenly begun to disonnect frequently and a pop-up comes up saying " local area connection 3 a network cable is unplugged" when it does. At the moment i am using AOL 9.0 and i have tried all the things suggested by AOL technical support: re-installing AOL, re-installing modem driver, re connecting all the physical connections and repairing the APS but none of this seems to work. Does anyone know how to stop this problem?

A:Problem with internet connection

Go to Start, Run, and type cmd. Now type ping localhost. Does it ping succesfully (did it receive all 4 packets)?

Ah, i have exactly the same problem, i have installed XP (professional) To my new comp, there was VISTA, but i didnt like it. So i choosed to change it. Now i don't know, how i can get my internet working. My computer is HP pavilion m9066. Hopefully u can help me, thx. :) I guess i need to download
new drivers. But i dont know where i can find them, except nvidia grafikkort drivers.

A:Internet connection problem

Jewe, you can go to Start > Run and type "devmgmt.msc" w/o quotes. If you see any devices with red or yellow marks you need a driver for it to work. Unfortunately XP drivers may not exist for some newer Vista PCs. Check with your PC manufacturer to see if drivers exist.

Hi...

I'm trying to connect my computer to the internet directly over dialup(56k). When I connect it connects fine with a good connection rate(50.2). Once I connect I can pull up web pages, but after a few seconds(usually enough time to load two pages) It just stops working. All incoming packets cease(though outgoing packets continue) It's the wierdest thing... I can connect and then wait a minute or two and then once I try to access the internet I can for only a few seconds and then it dies. The connection remains live, and you can still hear the static over the phone, but cannot pull up anything. I have tried firefox and other internet proggies and it works still only for a few seconds.

I have tried reloading windows xp, different copies of windows xp, updating with sp2, tried different modems that I know work including the generic to lucent and US robotics... I know the ISP is good cause it works on the other computer.

The only thing I can think of is that it is a motherboard problem or a windows bug. It almost sounds like it could be a DNS problem, but I don't know why it would work for a little while and then quit... I have never heard of this happening to others. And I do not know how to fix DNS problems on win xp

If anyone has any idea what the problem could be or any suggestions of things to try, I would be most thankful.

Thanks

A:Internet Connection Problem...

It's the wierdest thing... I just tried connecting, and since I recently reinstalled windows xp, windows messenger needed updating, so right when it connected I opened windows messanger and tried to connect, and it updated the whole thing just fine, so it had activity for about 5 minutes while it downloaded about 1meg... but as soon as the activity stopped the connection died right away....

Its like once activity starts it has to keep going or else the connection dies, but yet it is still open and seems to be connected to the isp.

i have XP with cable internet, recently installing a wireless LAN with a laptop. A recent problem has occured, but im not sure whether its the LAN connection which causes this.
Occasionally while browsing through the internet a message - "No connection to the internet is currently available. to view internet content that has been saved on your compuer, click Work Offline. Click Try Again to attempt to connect." would pop up.
First it started with the laptop (when clicking "try again", the internet didn't work) and now its on my comp (but when i click "try again", the internet continues to work).
I was just wondering what the problem is. im trying to download a file which is of significant size, but this problem is always cutting me off. how can i fix this? (previously without the lan connection this did not occur)
any help will be greatly appreciated.

A:LAN/internet connection problem

Could be an issue with your router. See if there is a firmware update for it on the vendors website.

First off I don't understand why Microsoft had to mess with this feature. Why if I'm the only one using this computer do I need another account. If I'm logged on as Administrator, I can access the Internet just fine. If I try to log on using the other account I can't open IE8. I can log onto the ISP ok, but I get a message that my Earthnet cable is not working. Maybe that's because I don't have an Earthnet connection. I have a dial-up modem.
I even set up a second Administrative account but I can't get any further with that than the regular account. it too tells me my Earthnet connection is broken.

Any ideas on how to correct this problem????

A:Problem with Internet connection, help please

Yep, it's always Microsoft's fault.

Would you happen to mean ethernet...instead of Earthnet? Some computers have helper apps to control network connections, and also that will prompt when something becomes disconnected. You have a desktop, though, so that's not likely.

You don't need multiple user accounts to get online either. It sounds like something is corrupt under one or the other, or a setting is wrong under one user account concerning how they default to the internet. It's been a LONG time since I've had to troubleshoot a computer with a dial-up connection, and by default, Windows 7 assumes you have some sort of broadband, always-on connection. IE used to let you specify which connection you would use by default, so check on that. If you truly aren't using the network card, aka ethernet, you could always disable it in the BIOS, or, better yet, in Device Manager.

Hi,

I have Windows 7 on my computer and have a wireless NEtgear Router. I previously used Mozilla Firefox browser until it stopped working, displaying a message that the webpage could not be displayed.

I switched to Internet Explorer but it has been giving problems recently. It starts o.k. but quickly stops working, giving an "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" message. I have used the Diagnose option but it does not work. I contacted my ISP but they say that it appears that everything is working from their end.

I have also brought my laptop to another house and it had the same problems on other networks. I had a similar problem about 2 years ago with an older laptop and found that it was a virus problem

It may not be relevant but at one stage last week, I had a problem with my McAfee which would not work for a while and I had to try a few times before it allowed me to turn it back on.

Thanks,

Radioactive Man

I'm currently on another PC in the house and the Internet works fine. Also I tried plugging an ethernet cord in the laptop and it still doesn't work....

After working flawlessly for six months, my computer is having trouble with browsers and connecting to the Internet. I'm using Windows XP Pro, Internet Explorer, Opera, Microsoft Outlook, and WSFTP to access Roadrunner cable. I have not installed SP2.

I did not download anything prior to this problem starting on February 6. I did, however, have my firewalls turned off overnight a couple of days before (February 4 or 5).

Using Internet Explorer, I can successfully access web pages as usual.
But after about five minutes, the browser (both Internet Explorer and Opera) cannot find the web site and I get the "the page cannot be displayed" message.
But, I can still access the web pages to my web page hosting companies ( Ipowerweb.com) control panel web sites and all of its links.

I can also still use the Microsoft Outlook and WS FTP programs with no problem.

If I turn off the computer and restart, the cycle restarts where I can access web pages for five minutes or so.

When I have a part of zoneAlarm running (vmon I believe), when a cannot access the web pages I get a screen that says I should rename the folder "Internet logs" but when I go into Windows Explorer I cannot rename the folder because it is either in use or has security.

Any suggestions?

Thank you

Hi there! First off, this site has been very helpful thus far when it comes to tech problems, and for that I am grateful. And right now, I have a problem right now that I have been unable to find an answer for on here thus far.

I have a Windows 8 computer, and ever since a recent critical update, I have been unable to connect to the internet using a browser of any kind. The computer will say that it is connected to the internet, but if you hover over the bars shown on the bottom right, it will say that it is connected to an unknown network and that it has no internet access. This is proven when I opened either Google Chrome or Internet Explorer, with no connection to the internet apparent. I have run troubleshooting, and according to the diagnostics, it says that one or more network protocols are missing on this computer.

I have not made any changes to the computer's settings, let alone removed any protocols, which I must have apparently had before the recent update. Any ideas on how I could fix it? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Hi there,

Having problems connecting to the Internet on my main PC. I have a wireless connection to my Virgin Media router. I'm using windows 7. Windows manages to connect to the router, but says 'no Internet access'. However my iPad and laptop are working fine - hence being able to type this. I have looked at forum posts with similar problems but nothing I have done so far has worked. I've tried restarting computer and router, resetting router to default, turning off all firewalls etc, done a complete anti-virus sweep in safe mode and bought a brand new wireless adapter, but nothing seems to have worked.

I also tried to ping the router (not sure what this means - just followed instructions) and got 100% fail. Doesn't sound too promising! How might I fix this?

Final thing to note is it was working fine yesterday, but today it's just not playing ball.

Happy to post any info you might need to diagnose the issue.

My internet connection is running smoothly and perfectly, however everytime I turn off my computer and restart it the next day, I get 'No Internet Access' under the internet connection status. Which is strange, because I do absolutely nothing different at night which could possibly cause such an error.

The first time this happened I ended up having to remove Norton Anti Virus. I really don't know why I thought to do this, but it seemed to work just fine.

Today however, when I restarted my computer the exact same thing happened. So, running along the same course, I removed my backup software as well. Which is not Norton.

Now, my computer is brand new, and I am trying to be as careful as possible with what it. So I can't go without anti- Virus software.

For some reason though, I'm not fully confident that it's the programs that's causing the problem. I'm almost sure that it's something in the computer that's being triggered by the anti- viral programs. I can't for the life of me, figure out what it could be.

And I can't just keep my computer on forever. I can maybe get away with using Hibernate or sleep for two or three days, but that's risking it. And I don't have insurance on this computer because it cost me another 100$ for coverage which would be useful. I did try costumer service, but you know how helpful that is.

It's nothing resetting Winsock is going to fix. I already tried that a few times... Read more

So Hi Tech Support Guy, I'm happy to be a member here, I registered because I have a network problem on my Win 7 computer. It seems to be a minor problem which probably needs a quick fix but I don't know what that fix might be. So it looks like that I have a network problem because all software which requires an Internet connection works just fine except that of the web-browsers. The web-browsers do work but they respond to me as if there is no Internet connection available but there is Internet. The web-browsers work also in safe-mode with networking and also an interesting thing at windows-startup is that the web-browsers work just before the windows-startup is complete. After windows-startup becomes complete the web-browsers stop working as if there is no Internet connection present on my laptop. What appears to me is that the web-browsers are waiting for some kind of administrative clearance because after I enter a web-address the web-browser would wait indefinitely for something but it would not confirm or show any messages to indicate that there is no Internet connection or connectivity. Your help will be much appreciated.

HI there, I hope you can help me. I have given my old desktop to a friend of mine and have been trying to set up the PC so she can go online. Her son already has an internet connection with AOL(UK) and his laptop is connected by a wire to the router.

I have connected a network cable from the desktop to the router, which I thought would automatically detect the correct internet settings and go on online automatically however it seems not.

The Desktop is running Windows XP.

I have tried to install the AOL Setup CD which was supplied but this fails (I cant remember the error message that is displayed)

I have called AOL Technical Support who have not been very helpful - the router has been reset, switched off, etc etc

I have run CMD - and run IPConfig as requested by the Technical Support adviser - however, I receive a message that says "An Error Occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : Access is denied"

In Device Manager there are yellow exclamation marks next to : "1394 Net Adapter" and "SIS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter"

Could someone please tell me how to get her desktop online!?

A:Internet Connection Problem

The 1394 Network Adapter is Firewire. That's not the problem. However, the SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter is.

If your network card is part of your motherboard, it means you don't have the motherboard drivers installed (I especially suspect this because the 1394 doesn't work). Download the drivers (get them from the company you got the computer from, i.e., Dell, Gateway).

In Device Manager, select the devices with the exclamation point on them and delete them. Reboot. When Windows comes back up, it will ask for the location of the drivers (you downloaded). They when then be installed correctly.

Hi,

I'm having a problem with one of my PC's LAN setup, I have a broadband modem and a router that is connected to 2 MACs and 2 PCs.

I recently formatted one of my PC, and I couldn't get my internet connection back or file sharing with other computers.

It has "1394 Connections" written under Network Connections>LAN or High-speed Internet. I have totally no idea what it means.
My other PCs has "LAN connections" written in the network connections folder and works fine. I thought this might have to do with the modem.

The PC is able to connect through cable or wireless.

I tried the setup home office network, it still doesn't work.

Could anyone please help?

Thanks,

1394 is firewire (an alternative to USB). Assuming Windows. Check in My Computer | Manage | Device Manager to see if your network card is recognised.
