Mouse disappears, opens Start Menu, move desktop icons and opens/closes program

Q: Mouse disappears, opens Start Menu, move desktop icons and opens/closes program

I could not complete Step 2, I continually received error and the scan would abort. When I enabled all protection in Spyware Blaster, I could not open Internet Explorer. Loaded IE-SPYAD and ran scan. Below is the file I received when I ran the HiJack This.

Hello,

Having displayed the 'Welcome' screen during power-up, my computer (Dell D0926 Dimension 2400) then proceeds to my desktop (the picture that I chose, rather than, for example, a black or blue blank screen). There are a few egg timers, and the arrow is present, but no icons appear whatsoever.

I've tried a few things but none of the following seem to work. Ctrl-Alt-Dlt has no effect. Pressing F8 during start-up and choosing 'Safe mode' takes me to an option of going into either 'administrator' or 'charlie allen', but having tried both of them I end up in each case with a black screen with safe mode in the bottom two corners, but am unable to do anything from there.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help!

Many thanks,

Charlie

My daughter handed me the computer this morning saying, "sorry mom, I just tried to jailbreak my iPod". Ugh!

when I click start menu, nothing happens..doesnot open. All but 3 of my dsk top icons are gone. (Malwarbytes, Firefox, and the trash can). Tried malwarebytes but it doesn't finish scanning. Firefox gives me this message " Firefox is already running but is not responding. To open a new window you must first close the existing Firefox process or restart your system". When I right click the computer screen I just get a small rectangle box with some arrows.
If I try to ctrl alt delete I just get a blue screen. It seems like all words have disappeared from my computer.
I have screen shots of these things because they are hard to explain but I don't know how or if I can post pictures here.

Please help.

A:Icons gone, start menu won't open, nothing opens

Can you try your earliest restore point in safemode please.

What is the operating system on this machine example. Windows 7 home premium 32 bit.

Do you have the disk?

Hey guys, I'm pretty sure this is a virus. Before I even had this problem windows was acting up, saying that it couldn't load my user file(and everyone else's except for 1 person) and had to log into a temporary user account. I turned off my computer and turned it back on.

I nearly had a heart attack.
I logged in to see my start menu open up by itself and my mouse cursor move by itself over to the top program in my start menu- Google chrome. Google chrome never opened, and the start menu closed shortly after but I was very afraid. I plugged out my modem and router because I thought I was being hijacked over the internet.

I logged into a different account and it happened again, but this time the mouse cursor moved to the second application, which was Microsoft office outlook.

I feel sick and am currently running SuperAntiSpyware...
Please , I will greatly appreciate any help!

A:Start menu opens, and mouse moves at log in

This is getting more and more interesting...
It appears that the first user to log into my windows xp machine does not have the 'switch users' sounds. Other users can get the sound fine except for the first user to log in on startup.

I have not experienced the mouse moving or the start menu opening again, but this is very unnerving. On a sidenote facebook once gave me a 101 error message (using google chrome) and wouldn't load at all for a few minutes. I'm not sure if that's a problem with facebook or if I have a worm.

When I attempt to move a program icon on my desktop, the program opens. I'm just holding down the left button and sliding the icons from one side of the desktop to the other and it opens the program. Now, I have the mouse set for double clicking for opening programs and this eliminates the problem, but before I had it set at single click and it never did this before.

I have cleaned the optical/red light area and that doesn't seem to help either.

I think maybe this mouse might be broken. It did slip down behind the desk earlier today.
I even unplugged it and plugged it back in to make sure it just wasn't loose. It just seems to have a mind of its own now.

A:Solved: Dell mouse - opens programs on desktop when moving icons?

see if this helps, go to control panel > mouse and ont he buttons tab lower the double click speed (i know you dont have to double click in the config you want it to be in but sometimes it happens when the double click speed is too high)

I use taskbar eliminator to disable the taskbar and winkeykill to prevent the start menu from showing and also disable the system keys.
I also use group policy to disable some other features.
But after all this was done, now the start menu appears with a somple double click, so my question is How do I Prevent the start menu from appearing when I double click an empty space on my desktop.

A:device manager menu opens an closes constantly

Welcome to Seven Forums normansoifer. More info please. You start the PC, and it works fine except the device manager opens then closes, and this repeats? Does this happen randomly, or it opens, closes, opens, closes over and over repeatedly?

Do you have a restore point from before this began? I'd start there. If no help, boot to safe mode and see if it occurs there. A Guy

Hello I have had some trouble with my computer for a few months, a unknown program will open in my task bar at the bottom of the screen where the start bottom is and close. most of the time it happens so fast i can't even get a look at the icon just a flash on my screen, it will kick me out of full-screen if I am watching netfilxs and once kicked me from a game as tho I had hit the windows key.

I am never ask if i want to run a program it it just does it own thing like it owns the place. I managed to get a look at it one because i was running a lot of scanning tools and the computer was running so slow that the program could not close fast enough before i got a look at the icon.

It had what looked like to be a gear something that looked like a external hard drive and some other thing I could not really tell what it(It poped up again and looked to have a camera and a Gear not sure if its the same program or if i have two programs doing the same thing). I have ran every scan I could think of from 4-5 different anti virus programs and it pulls up nothing. I have thought about a system restore but i have lot of programs i don't want to re-download and have settings i want to keep.

I am running windows7 and I built the computer if it makes a difference.
I Have the window 7 install disc but cant find the disc for my mother bored and GPU.

I have a lenovo U310 touchscreen laptop running Windows 10 (maybe 10.1, whichever is most recent) 64 bit. For the past 2-3 weeks I have had issues with my cursor suddenly seeming "possessed." It will dart around the screen, opening and closing programs, opening dozens of browser windows, clicking on features within programs (e.g., creating new folders, changing fonts via drop down boxes.) It moves so rapidly, I can barely see it, and it makes "touch circles" (those impressions you see when you touch the screen) pop up all over too. It overrides key commands (I think by clicking on other things so quickly) so I've haf to do a hard shut down because I can't even navigate via key or mouse to select to shut down or restart.
Note that this occurs whether I use the trackpad or an external mouse connected via USB. Most often, it seems to occur if I let the computer idle; I'll step away from my desk for a few minutes, and come back to what looks like a computer version of a seizure.
So far I have tried:
* Updating and running Windows Defender, in regular and safe mode. It found nothing. (I have run it repeatedly on the past few weeks.)
*Updating my mouse/touchpad drivers (Windows says they're up to date.)
*Running malwarebytes in regular mode (repeatedly, it found nothing)
* Running rkill, and then malwarebytes in regular mode (nothing)
* I tried running malwarebytes in safe mode today and it had the "seizure" - the clicking seems random, but it succeeded in deselecting the scan repe... Read more

It sounds like something is horribly wrong with what ever you actually downloaded.
it should not respond or do what you are describing,
->> that is responding like nasty malware usually does...
I would stop trying to open it and tell us the full name of exactly what you downloaded,
with the link to where you got it from.
when you download something like that you should manually scan it with an anti-virus program.

All of a sudden I can no longer open or close new tabs using the middle mouse click (clicking the scroll wheel) it doesn work in ie or in firefox. Also seems like it doesn't work on the desktop or any other application. I have'nt installed new updates or new programs, I don't have any "mouse software" like intellipoint. This affects both my wireless keyboard with built in trackball and a serperate wireless scrollmouse. The only think I can think of is that a few days ago I changed the the speed of my cursor.. of course this shouldn't have affected anything else.... but it is really annoying as I mostly use my computer for web browsing and always open links in new tabs... I'm having a problem with my computer that I just can't seem to solve. I first noticed while online I am having trouble typing in the address bar. When I attempt to type the text will highlight or delete itself. For example it I type www. It will highlight or just show ".w". Also the screen has a steady flicker. Typing in search boxes for yahoo or Google seems to work fine. I have also noticed that when I click on the start menu that it will not stay on. I comes on for a split second then closes. It gives me almost no time to open programs or anything else. Most drop down menus do the same. Another thing, anything highlighted in any program has a steady flicker.
What I done so far is to scan for a virus or malware with Spybot, Malwarebyte, Ad-Aware and AVG and so far everything is fine. . I'm running Win XP SP3 Intel CPU, 1.60 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM.
Any help with this problem will be greatly appreciated.. Thanks

My computer has gone crazy, and I cant use it, so i am sending this from an internet cafe.
Basically, it starts up, wont let me either open in safe mode to system restore, wont let me press[del] to enter start up mode.

Suggestions pls, I presume I need a boot disk, can I get one save it on CD and use it that way ??

All suggestions welcome, as I am stuck!!!

Thanks!

A:Xp Opens, Then Closes, Then Opens, Then Crashes Etc..

Hi puertorico, welcome to BC!A little clarification, when you say wont let me press[del] to enter start up mode do you mean that you can't enter the system BIOS utility (the thing that comes up before Windows) or that you can't get to the boot menu (where things like "Safe Mode" and "Last Known Good Configuration" are shown) by pressing F8 before Windows loads? If you have your Windows XP installation CD, then that's all we'll really need to fix this. If not, then there are some alternatives we can discuss.Post back soon!

Here's the whole story. First system specs.
2.4b p4
512 corsair xms
120 wd hd
ati 9500
soundblaster platinumex
xp pro

The other day my system just started randomly rebooting itself. After much aggravation, and a new power supply, I figured out that one of the corsair ramsticks was the culprit. removed the bad stick, and windows booted fine. Ram has since been completely replaced with new modules. no program icons on the desktop or startup menu.

Also it said i was missing a bunch of dll files, so i did a repair installation of xp. dll problems fixed, still no program icons.

deleted shelliconcache, rebooted, still no program icons, and shelliconcache didn't rebuild itself (still hasn't after several reboots)

downloaded tweakui, repaired icons, still no program icons.

renamed iconcache.db to iconcache.old, rebooted. still no program icons, but the file did rebuild itself, and was about 15k smaller.

repaired explorer, still no icons.

I can't find anymore information on this. Anybody have any ideas? The program icons show up in other parts of windows, like the add remove programs window. Just not on desktop, start menu, or in windows explorer. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,
My MS mouse (intellipoint 6000 wireless) started to behave strangely.
When I LEFT-click it on either Chrome or IE9 screen it opens a menu and does not allow me to type into any form. If I hold it pressed then I can type but the menu that appeared remains on the screen.
I've opened the mouse definitions under control panel and they are all OK.

Any idea?

Thanks

I have a particular program that, when I use "open with" from the context menu to open a file with that program, opens minimized to the taskbar. To maximize it, I must use task manager. The desktop shortcut to the application works fine, and is set to open the program maximized. Thanks.

A:Program always opens minimized from context menu - 8.1x64

What kind of program is it? Generally in Windows I think it is always worth a try to use Open With to set another program to open a type of file, then change it back. It is low risk and may reload the switches to the program.

Other than that I would use a Registry Search tool to try to find the open with details for the program. Before attempting to poke around in the Registry it is a good idea to back it up first. If your System Restore works well than making a Restore Point should cover you. Or you can used a dedicated Registry Backup such as Registry Backup from Tweaking.com

A:Start Menu randomly opens

Hello @icepilot33?, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues, with help from the community! I read your post about the Start Menu, and wanted to assist you! Did your notebook come with Windows 10 already installed?  Or did you upgrade to Windows 10?  Try disabling the TouchPad, and use an external mouse.  That way, you can narrow down if there is an issue with the TouchPad causing the Start Menu to pop up.  You can use this document to help you, if needed:HP Notebook PCs - Using the TouchPad or ClickPad (Windows 10) You can also try performing a Hard Reset.  After performing the reset, and using the notebook with the external mouse for a while, let me know if you are still having the issue. Please let me know if this information was helpful by clicking the thumbs up below.Have a great day!

I'm hoping that it is possible what I would like to achieve

First of all, I don't use the first screen when clicking on the Start button. I don't have a list of recent used programs, nor do I have anything pinned.

Selecting All Programs displays the screen with installed applications.

Now what I would like is to skip the first screen alltogether, so that when I click Start the actual list of installed programs is displayed. I could use the Classic start menu, but I like the Vista one.

Thanks for any answers

Hello DoctorJellybean, and welcome to Vista Forums.

There is no way to do this in Vista by default that I know of. However, you might see if the free program Vista Start Menu may work as a workaround for you.

Hey guys,

I've seen threads on this subject before on here, but here's another. I've had my Windows 7 PC for a year and a half now, and the entire time I've had it I've had Firefox pinned to the taskbar, and when I click on the icon, the program opens AND the icon stays there on the taskbar. It has been like this since I've had the computer. This is how I want it.

I don't know if it's coincidence or not, but today I updated Firefox to version 14, and now when I click the pinned taskbar icon, the program opens and the taskbar icon for Firefox disappears. I know you can set up a quicklaunch workaround (I've done that, but I'm just not satisfied), I know you can click this and that to get a new window to open, but all I want is my computer back the way it has been for the last 18 months.

PLEASE for the love of God tell me there's a way I can get the functionality that I had back. I've read in certain threads that Windows 7 is designed for them to disappear when opened. It was never this way on my PC and I just want my setup back how I had it. I tried rolling back to FF 13 to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Pinned taskbar icons disappearing when program opens

Hello mryan, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you have not already, you might see if unpinning and pinning Firefox again directly from it's .exe file may sort it.

When I leave my computer unattended, after a while, the desktop icons and the menu bar disappears, leaving only the background visible with the Windows Icon. If left unattended longer, it turns black with only the mouse cursor visible. In this case, I have no choice but to make a cold restart by pressing the power button in the tower.

Can someone assist me in solving this issue?

Scan with antivirus
Download and scan with malwarebytes. Make the long 90 minute scan and update before using
If this is negative go to device manager, look for yellow warning markers and make sure that you have the most current firmware for graphics card and that graphics driver is up to date.

Found if I hit CTRL and Start, it opens. Tried to do a System Restore, but I could not click on the Next button. I could not do a SAFE BOOT...could not get to that screen...followed instructions, but it did not run like the computer's instructions (so believe this must be affected also?). I do not know how to fix.

This computer does not have internet access. This happened once before over 6 months ago) after running a DVD. Some how I fixed it (also removed the DVD). Do not remember what I did. And it is doing the same now. They have not run that DVD again.

Any ideas of how to fix. I am assuming it is a Windows XP setting problem. But am not sure what or where or how to correct.

Hey.

Iím having some problems on start-up with Windows XP and I wonder if anybody out there could give me some good advice.

When I start my computer, it begins to load programs, and then suddenly the Program folder pops open, unbidden, on the desktop. I have to manually close the folder after the start-up is complete before going on to do whatever it is Iím going to do.

Iíve already gotten some good help at another forum and managed to track down the source of the problem somewhat. I was recently forced to delete some registry keys as a result of being infected by W32spybot.worm. The specific registry keys were located at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, Run Once, and Run Services, as well as HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.

I began to suffer this problem after I deleted those keys. According to this page:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];170086

Öthe System 32 folder can begin opening automatically on start up if some registry keys in those folder have Ēincorrect, incomplete, or nullĒ values. My problem is that I canít figure out if any of those keys have those values. As an EXTREME (read, 1st week Iíve owned this computer or used Windows XP) newbie, Iím reluctant to go messing around in the registry except as a matter of absolute necessity.

In addition, my problem is not that my System 32 folder opens, but rather that my Program folder opens, as in C: Program.

I looked through the past posts on this subject, but the advice doesn't apply in my situation.

Every time I start Windows the C:\Program files\Common folder opens up.
I have a hunch that it's to do with Install Shield. But I have no idea how to fix it. I have looked at my startup folder and there are no shortcuts to open this window.

I'm going to post my HJT log for your reference.

Have you tried using MSCONFIG? You can disable all starups, test if problem is fixed, and then add back the option you need.

Hi All,  Within the last couple of days whenever I boot up my pc, everything loads up ok, but then it also opens up a window for my programs, titled C:/program files.  I haven't set anything to ask the pc to do this.  Can anyone give me a reason as to why it does this, and how to prevent it?  Thanks!

Hello everyone,

I am currently trying to make a program start when another one opens. I don't want to have to use batch scripts since I have a few programs I would need to do this for and a batch script would make them not open correctly. I started to use task scheduler but I cant find what event ID I need to use. It would also be nice if the program ended when the first program shuts down. Any help would be great!

Our company have 15 000 users and a very few users sometimes get a bug where theyre entire desktop and start-menu shortcuts disappears. Not even command prompt can be found, but its in the windows folder same with the applications in program files.
Our solution doesnt make sense at all. We have to start taskmgr.exe as our admin user, then open administrative CMD and run gpupdate /force twice. Then all icons appear and startmeny shortcuts appear.
We have NO policy that sets shortcuts to applications, so how are gpupdate affecting this? It just blows my mind, i cant figure it out. It also works to just delete the user profile and let it re-generate again.

Any ideas?

Whenever I open a program like Google Chrome or Spotify the taskbar disappears. If I need anything I'll press the start button but it disappears again once I go back to the program. And recently I haven't been able to use the start menu or even the desktop, I can't run shortcuts or shut down the computer. I can only run the shortcuts I have on the taskbar. What should I do?

A:Taskbar disappears and start menu and desktop not working

Hello Emilia, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It sounds like you may have the program's window in F11 full screen mode. If so, you can press F11 to toggle between full screen and normal modes.

Hope this helps,

Subject says it. Just setting up new pc for my wife. Came with XP Home preinstalled but the start menu was the classic. Switched it to the XP start menu (which I've grown to like better) and My Computer, My Network Places and Internet Explorer icons were removed from the desktop. Only recycle bin remained. Switching back to classic puts them back again. Oddly enough, when I was saving a dowload to the desktop (while set up as XP) the My Computer, My Network Places showed in the save to box when pointing at the desktop.

Been using AIM on my daughter's laptop since she got it about a year ago. Out of nowhere, it now simply flashes open for about a half of second and then closes. I have done all of the following in attempt to get it to work again. Her account works fine on other PCs and she can use AOL Express on this particular one. But AIM will just open and close:

1) Uninstalled and reinstalled
2) Registery clean
3) Ran full virus scan. Uninstalled/turned off anti-virus
4) Reviewed all new programs and add-ons and uninstalled anything new
5) Deleted cookies, internet temp files
6) Restored Windows to an earlier point.

I am exasperated. I would reinstall windows but I can't find the disc at the moment. Any other ideas?

Help!

A:AIM opens then closes

Hi marcanat,

I'm going ahead and guessing that those "other PC's" are not Windows 7 machines?

There has been a few reported incidents with this over other forums aswell, and with no specific solution. It seems however to be related to a driver conflict, a driver/device not supported by the official AIM software. You could try booting up Windows 7 in Safe-mode (with or without networking) and see if the problem persists. Or you could check in the Eventlog and see if there are any posts related to this, might say what is wrong.

Otherwise I'd recommend you checking with AIM support(if there is any) to see if your system/drivers are compatible.

Hi,

New here with a strange problem. Installed IE8 after problems with 7 all seemed ok but it was buggy so uninstalled it and used Firefox and Chrome. Removed IE using setup. Decided I needed IE to update optional updates so reinstalled IE. Updated to IE7. All installed ok BUT IE now opens, displays home page and shuts down within 1 sec of home page loading with no warning.
Probably not related or maybe is....system restore won't restore anything past 3 days ago!!

Otherwise system seems to be running ok!! Running XP pro sp3 dual core intel with 1 g ram
Not running slow, crashing or showing any strange signs.....No hang on thats not normal for windows is it?

Its wise to make sure when you are doing updates and Service Packs to make sure the system is 100% malware free. With that said, why wold the SP3 not install? Did you recieve an error and if so what was the EXACT error message?

Haven't been able to load it since. Having to do a re-install of the OS isn't really an option.

A:IE half opens then closes

What do you mean 'half-open'? Can you elaborate a bit more? Does the IE window fill half the screen, and then close automatically, or does it load a webpage halfway thorugh and quit?

I'd suggest running a virus/malware scan first just to ensure that everything is clean. Update your anti-virus software and run a full scan.

Also, I would suggest trying alternative browers such as the excellent Opera or Firefox. Both are 100% free and IMHO, far superior to IE.

Anyway same old story, IE6 works...IE8 works...IE7 opens for 500ms or so and disappears.
The process closes so it's not an issue where the window is simply hidden.

Hi All,

Internet Explorer (7 and 8) will open and close immediately under Vista Home Premium. I have tried the following:

1) Run IE in no adds-on mode. Does the same thing.

2) Reset all settings under the Internet Options Panel---when it gets to the third part 'Applying Default Settings' it fails.

3) Run Malware Malabytes in Safe Mode---nothing detected.

4) Install IE8 (wasn't working back when it was IE7), still no luck. Uninstalled back to IE 7, no working, and then back to IE8.

So, any ideas? I normally use Firefox and Opera, but there is one specific work-related website that requires some ASP scripting that neither Firefox or Opera can handle!

Thanks!

Unfortunately I need IE7 for a stupid little app I'm running. IE6 and IE8 just won't work with it :-(

Machine is XP MCE-SP3 and was recently formatted so it's pretty clean.

Anyway same old story, IE6 works...IE8 works...IE7 opens for 500ms or so and disappears.
The process closes so it's not an issue where the window is simply hidden.

**********
I don't use this machine to get on the net
PC Functions:
Run MCE
Run IIS
Run an MS SQL DB that keeps tabs on my movies
Some video encoding using VirtualDub

Non MS Software Installed:
K-Lite Codec Pack
PowerISO
XP-AntiSpy (tweak)
Winrar
--Nvidia Drivers

MS Software installed:
MS ForeFront Client Security (AV)
MS SQL Server 2005

Scanned with MS Forefront Client Security...nothing found
Scanned with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware......nothing found

Machine preperation for further troubleshooting:
1) All Run items removed (HKCU, HKLM, Startup Groups)

2) AV Service Completely disabled,
(no other security or spyware apps installed)

3) No toolbars or add-on's installed but I still checked disable all third party add-on's in Inet options.

Troubleshooting:
===Stage 1===
Downloaded IE7 setup to local drive
Uninstall IE7
Reboot
Install from local file
Reboot
Hit [Tools>Inet Options>Advanced>Reset]

===Stage 2===
Create new local admin account and login with that account.
I rip out out 7, reboot and IE6 works fine again.
Install IE8 it works great.

You can try to run the following command to see if any DLL files are missing/damaged.

sfc /scannow

Try also the install folder of the app you use with IE7, if there is a DLL called PSAPI.dll
if there is delete it or rename the file.

This is posted for a friend. He asked for my advice and I thought what was happening sounded kinda werid, so now I ask you guys:

When he attempts to open REGEDIT, it will open up but then suddenly close. He has not noticed anything else out of the ordinary.

I suspect some sort of spyware. He was instructed by his Anti-Spyware program to delete a Reg-entry to remove a spyware program. I do not know the Anti-Spyware program nor the spyware he was trying to remove.

I had ACDSee 6 working fine. Then, I put in "Fujipix" photo reader for the Fujifilm digital camera I have. ACDSee 6 is now not working. When the program opens, it flashes on the screen for two seconds and then disappears. I can open a "jpg" file with the program, but the regular interface will not open, so I cannot "browse" to a folder or do anything else in the program.

I did the same on another computer, and ACDSee is working fine.

To get ACDSee to work, I have uninstalled Fujipix, uninstalled ACDSee, rebooted several times, gone through the registry and removed all references to both, reinstalled ACDSee 6, etc. Nothing seems to be working

I am running Windows XP Professional.

Any ideas on fixing this? Thanks for any help.

IE 11 opens and then closes immediately. The only way to open IE 11 is to right click on IE shortcut, select properties, then set to open minimized. Then click IE 11 on toolbar, and it opens. Setting IE 11 to Normal or Maximized causes IE 11 to open then immediately close. I have removed then re-installed IE 11, ran malewarebytes and ccleaner but IE 11 still has the same problem. I turned off GP rendering. I am out of ideas, does anyone have any other methods to try?

A:ie 11 opens then closes immediately

Run CCleaner-Slim or CCleaner-Portable & remove everything it finds, then try IE11 again. If that doesn't do it, go to Internet Options > Advanced tab, then click the reset button located near the bottom.https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/b...

I like W8 interface alot, but certain things don't seem to work.

Like normally, you could go into the Start menu, and copy/move/edit/delete icons. But In W8, I don't see any way of doing this. The only options they give you is to pin.

So the "All Programs" Menu in W8 is the Apps menu. And there doesn't seem to be a way to drag any of those shortcuts onto the desktop. There doesn't seem to be away to open file location of any of these shortcuts either.

What am I supposed to do?

A:How do you move icons from Start to Desktop?

If you right click on the tile and select pin to taskbar, you can pin to the taskbar. If you select open file location then it will open in the file explore, right click & hold on the item and drag to the desktop and release->Create shortcut

OR:

you can use the tutorial, for example : "Music" Store App Shortcut - Create in Windows 8

My cdrom drive on my Compaq Presario 5000 opens and closes on its own accord. It is irregular in its opening and closing patterns and sometimes stays out and moves fractionally as if wagging a finger or sticking a tongue out. I ran Spybot, Adaware, AVG free version, AVG paid version, Sophos antivirus, Kaspersky antivirus, TrendMicro free scan, and Spyhunter and they found a few minor things but not the trojan or virus causing this to happen. I went to computer cops site and found a thread that mentioned this problem and they said that Compaq said it was viral and that the only way to eliminate this was to do a complete harddrive format and to physically remove the drive by unplugging the power and communication cables and re-installing the drive. I was running Windows ME and I did a complete restore using the Compaq restore discs. This did not help. Next I upgraded to Windows XPHome and removed the drive and re-installed, but this did not help. I know the complete restore and the XPHome upgrade did not completely format the harddrive, but I don't know how to completely format the harddrive because I am always working from within the windows applications. My questions are: do you know of any way to rid myself of this trojan/virus and if so how? If not, how do I go about completely wiping the harddrive clean and starting over with a like new harddrive? Thank you for your concern in this matter.

I have a laptop with Windows 7 64 bit. The first few days I had it, Internet Explorer worked fine. Then it malfunctioned. When you double click the IE shortcut it would open for a split second then close. When you went to the Start menu, Programs, it would do the same.

I downloaded and installed IE 8 64 bit from Microsoft's website. When I double click the IE 8 64 bit shortcut it opens fine! The problem is, I can't set IE 8 64 as my default browser. I get a Windows error message that says you can not set IE 8 64 as your default browser.

So I can open IE 8 64 manually but any link I click tries to open IE 8 (32 bit presumably) which still opens then immediately closes.

Hello,

Boot into Safe Mode and see if you can uninstall the program then try the reinstall.

If still does not work try creating a new user profile. Create a new browser user profile - Google Chrome Help

If still having issue make sure that your antivirus is up to date and perform a scan on the PC.

See the thread below and try the recommended fix. Hopefully this helps

Thought this would be a good place to ask this...if not, feel free to point me in the right direction.

I've had this problem ever since the first betas, thinking that it would eventually work or "be fixed"--but even the release candidate and now the final has the same issue.

When I install IE9, when I go to open up the browser (32 or 64), it opens for a split second and then immediately closes. Every single time. I've never seen IE9 open on this machine.

One of my thoughts on why would be that I have two hard drives in this machine--a 60GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. I manually edited the registry entry for default install location / program files location to the E: drive, or 1TB drive, so I don't mistakenly install programs onto the SSD and clog up its limited space. For 95% of programs this has worked out just fine, including Microsoft's own Security Essentials (even though I'd love to have the option to put it on the SSD, but there's no options on where to install it).

Anyone else run into a problem like this? Is there a better solution than reverting that program files change? Now that I've had Windows running for a while I imagine changing that record will cause some...not so nice issues.

EDIT: And I just checked--IE9 is indeed installing to Program Files on the E:\ drive.

A:IE9 opens for a split second, then immediately closes.

For IE crashing, you probably want to try starting it from the command line first to see if it works this way - start > run > iexplore -extoff. If so, you have an add-on causing an issue, and can disable them via autoruns.
