Hello, owain182
Welcome to TSF

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)
Please give me some time to look over your computer's log(s).
Please take note of the following:In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
Finally, please reply using the button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave, and if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have "vanished" .
We need to run a Scan with DDSPlease download DDS, and save it to your desktop, from one of the following mirrors:This is a mirror
This is another mirror

Disable any type of "Script Blockers" or "Script Protection" installed on your system.
Double click on your desktop.
If prompted by any script blocking tools, please allow any actions taken by DDS.
When prompted to preform an Optional Scan, please select
Two reports will open. Please reply with the generated reports:DDS.txt <-- Copy and paste into your next post
Attach.txt <-- Attach to your next post

We need to scan for Rootkits with GMERPlease download GMER from one of the following mirrors:This is the Primary mirror
This is a Secondary mirror
This is a Secondary mirror

Close any and all open programs, as this process may crash your computer.
Unzip the downloaded file to your desktop.
Double click on your desktop.
Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
You may see this window. If you do, click No.

Click on and wait for the scan to finish.
If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
Push and save the logfile to your desktop.
Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.

Good evening,

I've noticed a difference in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Personalization between editions of Windows 10.

My wife's laptop is running Windows 10 Home, and her personalization screen looks like this:

I'm running Windows 10 Enterprise, and my personalization screen looks like this:

Notice that the menu options on the left, and quick access to change the theme settings on the bottom are missing from the enterprise screenshot.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Is it simply a difference between editions? Or is there a setting that is not turned on in my installation?

Thanks in advance!

Please download (save) SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your desktop.
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop. Select all of the contents and Extract them
to a new folder called SmitfraudFix.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi, sorry my first post is a plea for help, but there y'go... I'm running Vista Home Premium on Intel Core Duo 6600 running at 2.8GHz. All updates to date have been applied. Since a while back, I have been getting these irritating dialogs which tell me Windows cannot find {a key} when I try to open system folders, the control panel, the Computer icon on my desktop etc. Meanwhile, the folder or applet I launched does, in fact, launch without an apparent problem. It's annoying and also a bit scary as it may mean eventually something horrible will happen. Any advice please, anyone? Thanks,Steve

A:"windows Cannot Find..." Control Panel Etc...

I'd suggest that you download this free program and use it to clean your temporary files: http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadPlease use the default settings to clear the temporary files. The more advanced features are dangerous to use, so please avoid them.I'd also suggest that you use a couple of these free online scans to see if there are any traces of infection still on your system. Be advised that some of these scanners will pickup things in "quarantine" from other anti-virus programs - so review the results carefully:http://housecall.trendmicro.comhttp://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/solutions/activescan/http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscannerhttp://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.htmlhttp://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtmlhttp://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asphttp://onlinescan.avast.com/http://ca.com/us/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspxhttp://www.eset.com/onlinescan/<links compiled on 02/14/2008>

Hi,
I have a computer with XP on it when I put the memory stick in the USB slot; a sound comes on detecting the device found but it does not pop up nor you cannot find it Control Panel. It will appear after you go into Explorer and type the drive such as G: but it will not show in the Microsoft Explorer window. If your put the memory stick in the computer and then turn it on (boot up) it does show. I have read that you can change the drive letter but it doesn't work doing that either. I have tried multiple sticks and they all do the same and tried different USB slots too. Any idea on how to fix this problem. Thanks in advance!:

Problems w/ computer:

<> pop ups from rogue
Continuous pop ups + crashes. Ran several online scans.

<> Administrative restrictions
Can no longer change time, add/remove programs, basically anything even though I am the computer administrator.

<> Cannot find control panel
Tried running in safe mode. Tried right clicking on start menu > properties > yadda yadda yadda.

The last choice to fix this issue is to completely reformat the computer after backing up everything. However, I am looking for something else before I run to that option. Can anyone help??

Thank you

NOTE: this is posted for a friends computer. She is running Windows Xp on a dell inspiron E1505.

A:Cant find BitLocker Drive Encryption in control panel at all! HELP!!!!!!!

Hi?
Have you ever changed a group policy setting? run "gpedit.msc", this will lauch GP Editor, then locate to User configuration\Administrative Templates\Administrative Templates\Hide specified
Control Panel items,
check whether it is enabled, and check whether you have added Microsoft.BitLockerDriveEncryption
in the list.Or you can just right click the hard drive which you want to set up BitLocker, then see whether there's an option "Turn on BitLocker".

There is no "alot" folder that I can see. I have opened and looked in many of the program files. I could not find it in the control panel's add/remove programs.
Personally, I really don't like "alot," but I don't know how to get rid of it. I don't even know where it came from. But (and hope I am not stepping on any toes) should it be legal to impose on personal computers without providing a way to easily remove the imposition?

Also, while I am at it, some virus program (I will call a wanna-be virus program) keeps trying to solve my computer's problems. This seems to have come along about the same time alot started giving problems. I got so tired of it that I bought another virus program with a good reputation. The purchased program helped my computer, but then that wanna-be virus program keeps telling me I have over 600 errors, spyware. The way it is working out is that it seems like maybe the wanna-be is introducing errors as an excuse for me to buy it's solution. I use the program I bought to clean the errors and spyware, but then the wanna-be says I have errors/spyware again. I have kept it around just to analyze it in my own simple-minded way. Yes, I am probably simple-minded as to how these things work, but it just doesn't seem right to me.

A:Can not find alot in program files, not in control panel

I'm running windows XP on an old Dell Inspiron 1501 and I'm trying to get my microphone to play directly through my speakers so I can record them both simultaneously. The only answer I've been finding is to tick the 'microphone' checkbox in the volume control playback properties panel, but I don't have a microphone checkbox. There should be a 'microphone' box under SW Synth and CD player but I don't get one apparently.I've downloaded the latest SigmaTel Audio drivers from Dell and despite not having a problem with them before this, I'm inclined to believe that they're the problem. Any ideas?

A:No microphone control in playback Volume Control panel

Okay well of course I find an answer right after posting the topic:
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/t/19295458.aspx
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/p/18112824/18235810.aspx#18235810

Those two pages detail how to get an Input Monitor checkbox which functions just like the microphone one I wanted (although you can only mute it, not alter the volume). I used Instructional Set 3 from the second page, having to add the 'RecMonitorMute' entry as detailed in the first page and I can now hear my microphone input directly through my speakers.

HOWEVER, I'm still unable to record both the microphone and speaker sound at the same time. I thought recording the 'Stereo Mix' channel with the microphone coming through the speakers would work but it isn't and I don't know why. Any ideas?

Hello!
I got myself an Audio-Technica AT2020USB+ condenser microphone a few weeks ago, and I haven't really found out how I can change the gain, which I hear is important to do.
There is only one slider where the gain slider also should have been. The mic doesn't have a gain know like some other microphones have.

As you can see there is one slider. It only changes volume as far as I know.

How can I change the gain, is it needed, or can I maybe control gain using the volume slider?
If I can't change it directly through the mic or through the control panel, how can I change it? D:

Thanks in advance!

A:Can't control gain! No slider in control panel!

I have a recording studio (Sonar X3) and use several AT mics but they are not USB mics (such as the AT2035 and AT2050).

"Volume level" is the same as "gain". You can adjust the "Volume Level" or you can adjust the "gain" - both are the same thing. On mixers, amplifiers, etc, some will call the volume control "level" and others "gain".

A USB mic should have its own listing in the Sound/Recording Panel. Whatever slider that is has, such as what you show, should adjust the volume level. Many recording programs also have volume level adjustments.

Recently I've had a string of problems with my computer, most of which I could solve by myself with help from Internet forums.

The latest of these is the disappearance of the Control Panel and a little yellow triangle with a exclamation mark in the taskbar, which tries to sell me spyware-deleting software, pretending to be from Windows.

Every time I start up Windows Defender tells me I have TrojanDownloader:Win32/Renos, and deletes it, which gets rid of the triangle, but it comes back at each startup.

I have no idea whether these two problems are related to each other, or to any of my other recent problems, so can someone look at this HijackThis log to see if they can help.

Thanks,

When I click control panel from my start menu it goes blank, and on other pages of control panel it says "the page failed to load." I've tried sfc /scannow but it shows that everything is fine. I tried to restore back to my latest restore point on system restore but it doesn't go back that far and only goes to around 12 days ago. I've been having problems with it for a while now but haven't really put too much attention into it until now. I tried googling the problem and such but nothing seems to work. I can run the control panel perfectly fine on safe mode though. Thanks in advance and I hope you can help me!

On two occasions I have had to reinstall XP on to my Dell Dimension 4500 and various problems have arisen. Using the Windows reinstall disc up to SP2 level and some program updates as notified by Automatic Updates the programs have run reasonably well but after the SP3 download I have found that Control Panel does not operate correctly. For example in Classic mode there are 30 options but in Category mode there are only 10. In Classic Mode, Administrative Tools opens and lists six options but only one of them will open. In Category mode, Administrative tools is not displayed.. I was particularly interested in using Device Manager but this does not open. , I have also tried using the routine - Windows/Pause<Hardware - to open Device Manager but without any success.

I have compared the routines with those on my Inspiron computer and I find that the relevant programs, called by the shortcuts listed in Administrative Tools, are located in identical folders on both computers and that the programs have identical sizes and creation dates. I suspect that some registrty settings may be causing the problems but I don't know which ones are relevant to the operation of the Control Panel routines.

I have carried out an on-line search in various Forums, including this one, but I have been unable to find any directly relevant information.

Please can anyone suggest a reason for this problem and offer a solution?

You really do not need SP3 unless there is some specific software that requires it. It can be UNinstalled, have you tried that? It UNinstalls partially- perhaps the part that is giving the computer trouble will be gone.

There are Dell Updates that are sometimes issued for certain systems that are required before you load Service Pack 3 (and there were for SP2 for older Dells) I just wondered if you were aware of that and had checked for Updates from Dell support to install for video, sound, or other system software....even a DVD or media program can have these udpates.
http://support.dell.com/support/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs

If you are familiar with Dell support site you can use your Service Tag ID and find the specific support pages for your computer, or I can help you get there, just post the Service Tag ID found on rear of the tower or underneath the laptop.....

Upgrades are generally slow. If possible, run a complete uninstall/reinstall.

I see in your information you have build 7k. Possibly, MS did not want beta testers of 7k to upgrade to another build. Just run a repair install with your 7k DVD.

For some reason several days ago I noticed an annoying problem with my taskbar control panel items. When right click them and try to open "Network and Sharing" or the "Action Center" nothing happens. There is a brief moment when it uses processor time but nothing ever opens. I AM able to open these thing using Explorer and clicking them in the control panel.

I had an issue the other day that was fixed by rolling back and uninstalling the latest round of Windows Updates (4/13/10). This was an issue that was preventing me from connecting from my wireless network. I was hoping that the above mentioned issue would also be solved by this (they happened around the same time) but this wasn't the case.

Any ideas?

I'm running Windows XP. Can't access Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, etc., getting the message that "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."

It all started with my antivirus expiring and me being to lazy to renew it. Then my system was infected with spyguard.exe, which I cleared, but now I'm stuck with an even bigger problem.

PS: I have bitdefender security and spybot S&D running and I have a K7 antivirus demo which I can't uninstall due to this problem.

If someone could help me with this I'd be eternally grateful.

i just paid over 200 bucks to have my laptop fixed, and am still having the same problem as when i took it in. i bought the laptop a year ago and had it fixed a couple months ago, and it was wiped clean. he reinstalled windows vista. since then, i haven't been able to access my control panel properly, and am having associated problems, such as not being able to run windows defender, download programs properly, backup my files, or get windows updates. so i brought it in to someone else, and he acknowledged the control panel problem, said he installed service pack 2, and gave it back to me. that said, the problem remains.

i looked up the issue on the windows site, and it recommended SP2.. which i apparently already have. so can anyone help me? i tried to contact microsoft, but their site says i need an id number, but i can't access the control panel to get to it.

For the last few days I've been having problems with my Dell Laptop. It all started with pop-ups which I get every few minutes even when I'm not online. Then there is a Windows security alert which says there might be Spyware in the computer and says Click yes to download spyware remover. This happens about every 5 minutes and if I follow it takes me to the Winantivirus web site which is malware.
When I tried to fix it I found that my Control Panel was gone, and when I try to change the date and time or the background it says that there are restrictions in effect and that I should contact the System administrator. But I'm the only user and the administrator. Even when I try to run adaware and avg antivirus it doesn't seem to fix the problem.
I've found other posts about this same problem but I still don't know how to fix it though. Here is my HijackThis Log which i ran in safe mode but I'm unsure how to proceed. Thanks to anyone who can give me any help.

Hello folks.

As I mentioned in the topic I have two serious problems.

Problem 1: after logging into windows XP(I have administrator rights) one of the svchost processes takes up to 99% CPU time. It always happen just after logging and randomly happen during later work. Sometimes process will stop taking up CPU resources after 1-2 minutes, but very often it just eating my CPU all the time. The only thing which I can do is to kill that process. However I don't know what I am killing and what future effects it could have. For example I've noticed that after killing that process Windows Audio service stopped and I need to turn it on manually.

Problem 2: So I was living with a problem 1 for few months and someone said to me that I should turn off the System Recovery. So I did that, no computer restart was needed so I was working till the end of the day. The svchost problem happened later so it did not help. However after turning on the computer next morning my system loaded without desktop.
No right mouse button clicks on desktop were allowed. Also RMB button didn't work on my folders within explorer. My control panel disappeared also. After this i started googling and I have found this site and this topic:
http://forums.techguy.org/malware-r...4-nasty-virus-need-help-asap.html#post5079431

after running the tool "RatsCheddar" described ther I was able to restore my control panel and I have right mouse buttons click in the explorer. However I still can... Read more

Lately when I see this problem is has to do with the base filtering engine services is corrupted and needs to be repaired. This is usually caused from a virus.

The link below shows you how to fix this never ending problem, it uses the ESET repair utility for this.

I removed a solitaire program a day ago in Add/Remove in the control panel and it worked great.

Because I was having a problem with my computer I had to restore to an earlier date to correct the problem and that solitaire game reappeared in the add/remove program. I then tried to remove/delete it and a box comes up saying that program does not exist - so I can't delete it in the list.

How do I go about deleting that when it says it doesn't exist, but it is listed in the list?

So I've got a few issues to look at here. Sometimes when I right click a file, or anything really, there's a good chance that explorer.exe will come up with a crash and a lot of my taskbar items will disappear, and others might appear, like "Volume". Volume is one that appears after that and plain doesn't come up at start sometimes.

The other issue is related, but it happens when I access the control panel to Add and Remove Programs. Shortly after opening it and about to click something I may want to remove, it shows Explorer.exe and an error message and crash details if I click the details button. I know in my last crash, it included some dll file in the "Mods" area of the message.

Adding on to my first paragraph, one of the things that the crashes also close is my NVidia graphics control panel in the toolbar, one that allows you to change graphics profiles and the like. I'm sure most if not all of you are familiar with it.

Anyways, help with this issue would be greatly appreciated as it has plagued me for quite some time now and I believe it may be registry related. I think it's occurred ever since running an IObit program to fix the registry and also other changes to try and improve performance. Since then I've uninstalled Advanced System Care and the others.

Thanks in advance for any advice given.

The network I maintain at a school has policy restrictions which do not allow users access to the printer controls. However I would like them to have the ability to control their own print jobs and unpause printers etc. But when editing the policy I find that they get access to control panel at the same time and can do lots of possible damage.

Can I do this any way while minimising possible damage? We are running an NT4 network with some 95 and some NT workstations.

i'm having trouble with my control panel, once i'm there, i cant open anything in it
i was reading some instructions that were given to someone with a similar problem, and i used the "exefix8" link.
It seemed to work, cuz when i went back to the control panel, everything opened and i thought everything was fine.
But a few days later, i tried to open something in the control panel, and it wouldnt open.

This has happened twice, and i've used the exefix8 2 times, and it always fixes it, but i've noticed that when i download a jpeg or mpeg, they save as exe files, and thats when the stuff in my control panel gets messed up
its only when i download stuff
Nothing else in my computer is messed up, everything seems to be working fine, except for the control panel and the files that keep saving as "exe" files

i did the startlog, but i dont know very much about technical stuff on the computer, so i wouldnt know if there r errors in it...

Programs wont run on my laptop (and its not the usual .exe programs not running problem). When i click on the icon of a program, nothing happens at all or sometimes the cursor has a loading icon next to it and that's as far is it gets. Also when i do click on an icon, i cannot click on anything else after that, not even start.
Alongside this problem, the network connection icon on the task bar (2 computer screens) always has a red X on them even though i am connected via wifi, and it will not let me open network connections from that icon or from control panel.
One final problem is that Windows live one care wont run either so therefore i am vulnerable to threats online.

I am running Windows Vista on a HP laptop.

Any help on any of this would be greatly appreciated!

A:Problems with programs, control panel, run as admin...

Sounds like Virus issues to me if you could try running a scan on your PC in Safe Mode, also let me know if the same problem occurs in Safe Mode

To access safe mode Restart your PC then during the boot process keep tapping F8 until you get to the Advanced Boot Menu, where you should then select Safe Mode with Networking and be sure to update your Anti-Virus before scanning if need be.

Hi,

I am having some difficulty changing the default icon for the Control Panel as described in this thread and on this other site. I have checked and double-checked that I followed all the steps and entered information into the correct registry keys:

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}\DefaultIcon

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683}\DefaultIcon

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{5399E694-6CE5-4D6C-8FCE-1D8870FDCBA0}\DefaultIcon
The icon I am trying to change it to is the old one from Windows XP. I am using a patched XP Luna theme for Windows 7 and have changed the My Computer, Network, and Recycle Bin icons through the Personalize control panel with no trouble. Those icons were max 48x48 as extracted directly from XP's shell32.dll and display just fine, as seen here. Yet the Control Panel icon remains stubbornly fixed as is.

I even added a "dummy" 256x256 version in the icon itself using IcoFX (because the icon, being an XP one, does not have its own native 256x256 version):

Still nothing. The default icon still sits on my desktop unwilling to change. I have restarted multiple times, tried rebuilding the icon cache, logged off and on, restarted Explorer... no dice. What am I doing wrong? Is the problem that the icon is in the Windows folder and not somewhere else on the system? I'm the only one who uses this computer (a... Read more

Welcome to Seven Forums win7wudt. I would start with running the System File Checker 1st. See if it finds and corrects any issues. It may need to be run 3 times as noted if it finds and cannot correct any problems. Report back and we can go further as necessary. This could potentially be the behavior of an infestation as well.

Hello guys,

I am having some real annoying problems with the nVidia Control Panel + Drivers (Geforce GT220), for about a year or two now lol.
So I currently have the 275.33 installed, and every time there's an update I have tried to update the drivers but with no luck.

Okey this is what happens every time:
I download the right driver, in this case, the very latest (295.73-desktop-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe) and extract the files.
I run as administrator the installer, accept terms and accept & install.
It starts well, after about 20% of the progressbar, the installation stops at nVidia Control Panel and it says "Error". And nothing else can be done. I've been stuck with the 275.33 drivers for months!

I've tried the following:
1. Perform a "Clean Install". Deleted my drivers, and then fails at the Control Panel installation.
2. Uninstall drivers in normal mode. Reboot into safe mode, use Driver Sweeper to clean leftover files, clean registry with CCleaner. Boot back into normal mode, run installer, it fails. Have to system restore to get drivers back installed (not even the 275.33 installation works!)
3. I've even tried following a suggestion I found online, I totally uninstalled the drivers, and then used Windows Update to find the drivers. (I hate using Windows Update to update anything but the OS). The updates failed.

I just installed Windows Live Mail and am having problems with any .pps attached files to e-mails. When double clicking on the attachment I receive an error message stating that the file does not have a program associated with it. It states that I need to create an association in the Set Associations control panel. I can download these files to my desktop and open them fine. I have checked the default programs in the control panel and the association between a .pps file and powerpoint already exist. I never had this problem in Outlook or Outlook Express. What gives?

A:Live Mail (set associations control panel) problems

I had this same problem. You probably have Power Point Viewer 2007 installed. If not, you can get it free from Microsoft. You could save the file to wherever you would like, open Power Point Viewer and the interface of that program lets you choose the file you want to view. Just choose the file you downloaded and it should work fine. I hope this helps.

I have two current problems with Windows (XP). They seem unrelated but, as well as I can remember, occurred simultaneously. They may?possibly?also be related to a problem I had with Firefox, a problem that caused me to return to IE?s browser.

First, I can no longer access Windows System Restore. When I touch the System Restore tab in the Help and Support Center, nothing happens. Nor does it if I touch the Use Tools tab. For the record, underneath where it says ?Did You Know??, the date given is February 18, 2006, rather than today?s date.

Second, when I go into Control Panel, Display, Desktop (to change my desktop wallpaper), my system often hangs up, leaving Control Panel, Display permanently visible but not allowing me to change anything. The only way I can get back to normal is reboot. When Control Panel, Display hangs up, it is almost always accompanied by a message that says: ?Run a DLL as an app has encountered a problem and needs to close.? Before Windows closes when I reboot, I also get a message stating: ?rundll32.exe (ending program).? At times, I also get one of the following messages: ?DrWatson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close.? On at least an occasion or two, I have also gotten a message describing ?DDE Server Windows? or ?Font Capture? as ?ending programs.?

Thank you.

A:CanÂ’t access my Control Panel, Vundo Problems (Win Antivirus)

Answer Match 84.42%

Three problems that I think are related.

(I'm running Windows XP, factory installed. I installed SP2, successfully, a few months ago.)

1. I can't get to System Restore. I choose System Restore from the System Tools menu and nothing happens. The cursor turns to an hour glass for a second, then changes back, and then it's as if I hadn't chosen any menu option--nothing at all happens.

2. If I type into the Run window msconfig, I get the following: "Windows cannot find msconfig. Make sure you typed the name correctly. . . . etc. . .."

3. Problem in the Control Panel. Some of the ten categories in the Control Panel I can click on and get to immeditately. But others, including Network and Internet Connections, when I click on it, I get the message "An error occurred while Windows was working with the Control Panel file c:\windows\system32\netsetup.cpl." I click OK, then the same box comes up again; after maybe ten times, finally the error box stops coming up and I do in fact get the Network and Internet Connections window.

help!

Hi guys,
I'm running Vista Home OS and had many problems recently booting. Almost every time it requires to run system restore before it boots. Now several desktop icons are not working - mainly the ones that allow me into the file system. Runnig "My Computer" opens "Computer Management Snapin Launcher". Running "Windows Explorer" or "Control Panel" gives an error message "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations Control Panel". I'm pretty sure this must be a virus messing up my registry but I've run AVG, AVAST and Spybot and nothing is being found. Any ideas how to fix any of this without reformatting???

Help I am very new at fixing error messages on my computer. Everytime I go to the Control Panel and click on anything, I get an error message: Windows cannot find 'C\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe.' Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button and then click search.

A:Control Panel Error Message, Windows cannot find 'C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.e

Hello, Headguard

One machine at a time please. Let's start with the Vista machine. Please run these instructions on the vista machine. When we're done with it we'll do the XP one.

Hi, I'm having Windows Cannot find errors when trying to open things inside the Control Panel. See screenshot: http://s7.postimg.org/kqndp5knf/screenshot_6.png

The error message on top is "Allow an app through Windows Firewall". If I simply click "Windows Firewall" nothing happens. If I click "Network and Sharing Center" nothing happens. However, "Sound" for example, works fine.

the second error message is when I try to right click my desktop and "Screen Resolution".

I have already tried dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and sfc /scannow
Neither of them solved it.

I present to you today a most peculiar computer with a MYRIAD of problems, it seems.

The computer in question has been in use for about two months, I'd say. It's about six years old, but we just recently had a need to use it, so I had a tech person clean it off, fix any problems, and it was sent back to me in working condition. I loaded up my programs without many problems, except one...

The scanner portion of my printer/copier/scanner combo device never would operate. The printer is fine, but the computer ALWAYS gave me the "Found new hardware..." bit, regardless of what drivers I installed. I get the sneaking suspicion that this is related to my current woes.
Otherwise, the computer operated just fine. UNTIL, that is, last week. A friend tried to install a game to the computer, and finally gave up, having never gotten it operation. Files installed just fine, but my DirectX wasn't up to date. We tried to update it, but to no avail. Always got the same error messages that DirectX needed to be updated in order to start the game.

A few days after, I'm trying to connect a "MagicJack" to the computer for my grandmother. The MagicJack doesn't work. I spend a few hours with the abomination that is MagicJack Technical Support only to have them tell me that I need to restart/unplug-replug/install some updates. Surprise, surprise, the updates won't install. The MagicJack never works.

And finally yesterday... I was attempting to ins... Read more

How about safe mode with networking? press F8 as soon as you turn on the computer and select safe mode with networking. Try a system restore from MSconfig. In Msconfig you have a button that says Lauch system restore.

Hi,

Looking for advice on how to find where the touch pad settings may be hidden on this laptop I'm working on? I've looked in the control panel and there is no icon for touch pad and I've looked in the mouse settings without finding any options to change the settings for the touch pad? The laptop is an acer Aspire 5520-5912 running Vista Home Premium Service pack 2. Any ideas?

A:Can't find touch pad settings in Control Panel/Mouse settings anywhere?

Hi loki2007 Usually, Windows install it's own Microsoft Legacy Drivers for a touchpad on a laptop, and these drivers doesn't enable the "Advanced" settings that allows you to control the touchpad. In order to do that, you have to install the laptop touchpad drivers which will add that tab in the Mouse options.Download and install these drivers:http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/Driver/TouchPad/Touchpad_Synaptics_9.1.16_Vistax86.zip?acerid=633639058794305220&Step1=NOTEBOOK&Step2=ASPIRE&Step3=ASPIRE%205520&OS=ALL&LC=en&BC=ACER&SC=PA_4Let me know if they install or not.

Help please and thanks, Mary

Here is my hijackthis text file.

A:Control/C Control/V control/alter/delete doesn't work

Mary, keyboard problems are not invariably software or malware-related. First things first - what OS are you talking about ? XP, Win 7, Win 8 or what? What type of keyboard is it? PS2, USB or wireless?

Disconnect it and reconnect it a few times, reboot and try again. Turn the keyboard upside down, placing one end on the edge of a thick book, and thump a few times on the back with your hand. Sweep the crud onto the carpet.....

Is it just a keyboard hardware problem, and if so which keys? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/keyboard-shortcuts#keyboard-shortcuts=windows-7 tells you a lot of key combinations with ctrl and shift and alt. Tell us if any or none work?

Open a document and try typing a bit of text. Do all the characters work?

If it appears the keyboard is faulty, can you borrow another to test?

Quite often, keyboard problems are down to wireless problems: and can often be solved by re-installing the keyboard driver.

Help!
Like a few guys before me I have picked some malware (these scumbags suck our precious air) that denies access to the Control Panel and I get the message "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions.............Please refer to System Administrator" I am Sys. Admin. (stand alone pc). I have reset the settings for NoControlPanel in my registry and tried to open control.exe, which gave me same message. (These suggestions I found on an earlier thread). Tried everything (except putting an axe through the box), still get this same error message and I'm still locked out. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

If anyone can shed any light into this it would be appreciated.

Try doing a System File Checker go to Start>Run, type sfc /scannow (NOTICE THE SPACE BETWEEN SFC AND /). If you're not familiar with the SFC here's a site that will shed some light, www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html. BTW, you will need your XP CD.

Did a clean install and got almost everything re-installed last night, but one program puts an icon on the Windows Control Panel. Win 7 is giving me the new Control Panel category view and I can't find anything. In 7100 RC I am almost certain I had the old traditional Windows Control Panel. Can I get that in Win 7 RTM and if so how? Seems like my rusty memory is telling me there was a way to chose which display you wanted in Vista????

I have an HP Pavilion about I year old. OP is Windows 7 home Premium. I clicked on the "Control Panel" then on "Change backgrounds" I wanted to put on a slide show with some of my photos. Listed in the "Picture Location box" were these:
Windows Desktop Backgrounds.
Picture Library.
Top Rated Photos.
Solid Colors.
Door County' 2013 #6525-6611.
New Folder (2).
Pendelton Reunion.
San Diego Reunion.
I clicked on "Picture Library" which is a collection of my Marine Corps reunions photos for the last 20 years. I selected about of 15, everything was looking great. When I went back to the desktop window all the photos were changing just like I wanted, but suddenly the screen went black, from the top left side this text started to move down from left to right, "There are no pictures in C:/users/Ralph/pictures/door county' 2013 #6526-6611" this just keeps going down when it hits bottom it the starts up. It does not stop till I move the mouse?? I checked several times there are no check marks on any photos in the "Door County Box" in the "Picture Location Box". There are photos in the C:/ location. Is there a fix for this??
