Window Explorer keeps stopping/Windows Explorer Changed File Dates

Q: Window Explorer keeps stopping/Windows Explorer Changed File Dates

I was told to also post this iunder this category.

I'm about to tear out my hair. First Windows Explorer keeps stopping, searches for solution then restarts. About the time this problem, I noticed that Windows Explorer will change the original creation date on some of my files. It might be all files in folder or just certain types. I've yet to make a connection with when this is happening or what is causing it. Not necessarily when Windows Explorer stops. It's difficult when you can't tell which is the oldest/newest file in a folder.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, which I keep updated, McAfee, AntiMalware Bytes and SuperAntiSpyware, also all updated.

I'm begging! Can someone help me please?

Thanks,
Lisa

16 Bit Operating systems haven't been around for a long time, it is either 32 or 64 Bit.
Running multiple anti-virus systems can cause conflict and only one should be installed.
You may have more luck posting this in the Virus/Trojan/ Spyware help section as it could be a virus.

I am noticing that when I click to open a folder in the File Explorer, the folder automatically opens in a new window.

Then if I click on another folder or file, that automatically opens in a new window as well and so on. It is annoying to have to keep closing windows.

I cannot locate how to change that behavior back to where I had it where it only opened in another window if I clicked for it to do so and not by default.

I am not seeing that as an option in the menus.

Any suggestions or advice here?

Hi sunrise12,
you can certainly turn that off, go to any folder or file and press "alt", then press T (Tools) and then press O (Folder Options), this is your folder options, the first thing you come to is this :

select "open each folder in the same window", apply and click ok and that should fix this for you.

Hey

My Computer Details are as follows -

- Operating System : Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600)
- Processor : 2.40 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4, 16 kilobyte primary memory cache, 1024 kilobyte secondary memory cache, Not hyper-threaded
- Memory Module : 504 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory

- Virus Protection : Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Anti Virus.

(I'm not sure if the computer details provided are enough, I will provide more if required)
Recently I used my friends USB drive. When I connected the drive I got a warning from the Avira Virus Protection. I clicked on the Delete file option. My brother may have used the same USB again in the future.

It was later that I noticed -

- The Internet Explorer Window Title had been changed to "LORD RAHUL COOL"
- The Homepage was changed to - www.nyd.zoomshare.com

I was able to change to Homepage back to Google.com

- I did a complete system scan using the Avira Anti Virus, and it reported no virus on the computer.

- I did a complete system scan using IObit Security 360, and it reported no Malware or Spyware on the computer.

Also, when the computer boots up, it takes longer than usual and the following Windows Script Host message comes up -

Hi everyone!

I tried to ignore this problem, but it has become increasingly frustrating when I have to work with files in Windows Explorer.

The problem is, when I right-click on a file and choose Properties, it takes 5-8 seconds to open the File Properties Window. Strangely, when I do the same with folders (Folder Properties) the window opens almost instantaneously as it should. I have tried to fiddle around with ShellExView but to no avail - after all, I assume that program is just for controlling context menu entries. I searched and googled but I couldn't find any similar problems, the closest I got was that software.

Do you know what's the problem? Thanks in advance!

A:Windows Explorer takes 5-8 seconds to open a File Properties window!

You can keep disabling more non-microsoft extensions in shellexview and see if any of them are causing it (do a system backup first)

I apologise if this seems a foolish question, but I'm getting vexed with a simple issue in Windows Explorer. I do manual backups by newest dates but find that while the files themselves are dated correctly, the root folders don't e.g. if I have a folder say General, & then 10 subfolders, and I know that various files have been saved in any number of those subfolders so figure I'd rather just save the General folder - the date will show something in 2012 rather than recently. Means I invariably have to drill my way down to determine which subfolders have got updated files.

While I appreciate that I'm backing up regardless, I'm just more curious about why the root folder never updates itself date wise? And is it something I can somehow change maybe?

Thanks.

A:Windows Explorer dates not as expected.

Are you showing the Created date or the Modified date?

Hello,
Is there a way to force Windows Explorer (Windows 7 Premium) to display the proper dates in the "date modified" category? It's displaying the same date as in "date created". I've edited some of the files in that folder a few days ago but it still displays a 2008 date.
Thanks in advance,
Sylvia

A:Wrong dates on folders / Windows Explorer

"date modified" & "date created" fall under the same date because you have not modified the folder yet, until you do the dates wont change.

You can no longer sort the contents of a file listing in Windows Explorer, keeping a selection of files made in the previous sort order.
If this is a bug I would like to know, than I will report it appropriately, otherwise - if it is "by design" - I would like an explanation, why this function was removed.
As I see it, sorting has to be possible with the selection of files kept intact.
Searching the net I find many people being upset that this is not possible in Windows 7. I used it all the time at work, on my XP machine. I used to select all dll-files in a certain folder, and then sort by "Date modified", which resulted in a
list of files sorted by date, and with the appropriate files selected. This was an easy way to find out which dll files had changed last in our development environment - just sorting by date makes a lot of other files, such as log files and debug files appear
in between the dll files.
Below is another call for this. This user's request was made in another part of MS forum and the  (so called) answer was just a link referring to this place, indicating that the user should put his question here instead, so I take the liberty of putting

I did find another thread re this and I am sure it said to add it from the install disk. Now as that sounds fairly complicated to me would I be right to say I can use the registry backup from some months ago to reinstate it??

Hi,

I'm trying to install Adobe Acrobat 8 but the installation always fails due to Windows Explorer being open (Problem id 3508). The only problem is I don't have Windows Explorer open in the first place. To be doubly sure, I've run Advanced SystemCare in case there's any problems with the registry. I've then restarted my laptop and without opening any applications I've run the setup. I get the same problem.

I'm running Vista. I don't believe it's a compatability problem as I've run Acrobat 8 on this laptop before. I'm asking here before going to Adobe because although they answer my question promptly, their answers are rarely helpful.

Hope someone out there can help!

Many thanks.

Hello Everyone.

I use Windows 8.1.

Until few days ago, everything was working fine. No idea what happened but whenever I open the File Explorer/Windows Explorer, it always opens minimized. Earlier I just needed to maximize it and close it so that when the next time I open it, it opens maximized. But when I do that now, it still opens minimized.

Not just that. I like to have my files and folders view to be as "large icons". But, its all in "details" view now. Earlier if something like this happened, I would change it once to "large icons" and it remained intact upon my viewing next time. However, it doesn't happen now. Inspite of changing the view settings to "large icons", they still open "details" view.

Any idea, how to solve both the issues? It would be very helpful.

Thanks.

This is so weird, see the screenshot. This happened after booting up my pc today (running XP Pro SP3).I had a malware infection days ago and removed it almost completely (apart from random tabs popping up in Firefox).Last night I ran O&O Defrag and it finished without any problems or errors.I shut down the pc and then this morning I hung at startup.Safe mode hung at mup.sys and after some Googling I managed to 'fix' it by copying over the original registry (as detailed here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...;en-us;Q307545).Obviously that got me back to how Windows was just after the original install in 2007.So I restored the backup of the registry I made just days ago. This fixed everything but gave me this really weird thing in Explorer.Even though the names are wrong I can still click the C: drive and see all my files and folders.I can enter any folder but the moment I double click a file it will open the file in the associated program and crash explorer at the same time.I hope someone has a solution for this! Now

I have just begun to use the windows 7 software. When I open a document folder the Word file names have an icon overprinted on the blue W.

The 2 most frequent mystery icons are:
- a green circle w/ white check mark
- a red circle w/ a whit "i"

Also found on excel files & picture file names.

Could anyone tell me what these icons mean & is there webpage that would explain the meaning of the icons,

Thank you

A:What is the meaning of each of the window explorer file icons

Those.... sound an awful lot like the icon overlays for Tortoise SVN...

Areyou a developer? Do you have Tortoise installed ion your machine?

Though it's not very common to accidentally have added items to svn (and therefor gaining the icons overlays) withough you having known you did it

Though maybe someone ripped off the icons and are using them for something else. But I do not believe that those are native to windows at all but to some other installed program (like Tortiose).

No matter how many times I reset file explorer in Windows 10, browsing through folder will open multiple windows and not keep the same windows at all. WTF? Is it this hard to get a basic god damn app to behave normally? Browsing through my D$ drive will spawn multiple windows. Or browsing through C$ will open the same window for the first folder then pop open a new window for anything else.

Anyone else having this issue? Any fix? Restoring defaults does nothing. I just want to keep the same window open for everything. First let me describe the problem:
All of my Windows Explorer settings appear to be stuck at the defaults. If I go to Tools>Folder options... and change them, the change does not take effect, and if I open the menu again, the check boxes are back to the same state as before.
When I right-click in empty space, my New menu is empty.
Also, if I try to drag a shortcut to the taskbar, or pin an item to the start menu, nothing happens.
Now this all started after removing a piece of beta software (being developed at my employer) using the add/remove programs list (my mistake). It apparently corrupted the registry, causing a bluescreen at boot. I let the system do the auto repair, which
got me able to boot again, but with the problems noted above.
My next action was to try System Restore to bring me back to a state a few days back. Unfortunately, the restore failed, and upon going back into System Restore, I found all of my restore points had disappeared (!).
I next exited Windows and replaced (after making backups) DEFAULT, SAM, SECURITY, SOFTWARE, and SYSTEM in Windows/System32/config/ with the copies in RegBack. After rebooting, this did not seem to change anything.

Any ideas about how I might still get my old settings back or at least be able to change them again? I was hoping to avoid reinstalling Windows.

A:Windows Explorer settings can't be changed

One important question: If I have resized my disk partitions since I made a System Image with the backup utility in Windows, will I still be able to use the image?

The native image creation tool was Microsoft's first stab at such a facility. The good news is that it's free. The bad news is that it is temperamental, unreliable and that it lacks the functionality that we take for granted with similar but mature products.
Example: it will not restore partitions where the target is smaller than the original partition. But give it a try anyway - I might be wrong.

Hello,

I've been having some frustrating issues with Windows Explorer (on Windows 7), and I've pinpointed the cause to one stubborn wmv file on my external hard drive. Whenever Explorer accesses the location of this wmv file (unfortunately the root directory), the green bar at the top starts slowly running, presumably trying to load the thumbnail of that wmv file. This wreaks havoc everywhere, as any other folders I navigate to then have missing thumbnails that will not load... and when I go to "Computer", it's completely empty and the green bar atop runs indefinitely, but never makes any progress... only heating my computer frustratingly. Furthermore, when I restart explorer, the error "the remove procedure call failed" shows. Logging off or pressing Ctrl+N in explorer have provided temporary solutions so far.

When I try to delete, move, or rename this wmv file, Explorer just freezes altogether. Is this file corrupt? What can I do about this file? I'd preferably like to save somewhere else before deleting it.

A:[QUESTION] Can't upload from popup file explorer dialog window

Hi might help if you post a screenshot of what you're trying to do..
I'm guessing you're using a particular browser, and on a particular site, and trying to upload sthg to that site, but when you click the 'upload' button (or whatever it's called) you don't get a browse dialogue.

For example, when you click the 'Insert Image' button (above) to post your screenshot, do you see a browse dialogue when you click 'Browse' on the window that is displayed?

I don't know what happened, but a few days ago I discovered that the OPEN command in Windows Explorer has changed his order. When I double clicked C:/ or D:/ partitions doesn't enter anymore, remain still in My Computer and my CDROM start to spin. When I right clicked, in the opened cassette says that OPEN command has moved in the third position, after AUTO (first option), SEARCH... (second option) and in front of EXPLORE command.
Is very frustrating to right click every time and select the third option (OPEN) to enter a partition. What should I do to restore the default state and to open normally when I double click a partition???

Word or Pdf files do not show up. I did a factory setting reinstall of Windows 8.1. My word documents showed up in the preview window prior to the reinstall, but not my pdf files. I would really appreciate if someone can help sort this out as I use this feature frequently.

Good day folks,

This has probably been touched on many times - but I mistakenly unpinned the Windows explorer icon from my taskbar. When I dragged the Windows Explorer icon from the desktop back to the taskbar it has a different appearance. Is there a way to get it to appear as it did originally? ie the yellow files (out of the box).

Regards.

A:Windows explorer icon appearance changed when unpinned.

Try this.

1. Right click on explorer in the taskbar.
2. right click on the Windows explorer entry on the jumplist.
3. Select Properties.
4. Press Change Icon.
5. If the icon file showing is not %windir%\explorer.exe then browse to that file and select the first icon.

Upadate: On my system it is "C:\Windows\explorer.exe"

Another thought.

If you create the shortcut with the location of %windir%\explorer.exe it should pick everything up automatically.

Since I started using Win7, the windows explorer icon on the taskbar has never given me any options - left-clicking it opened windows explorer.
Suddenly it has changed - clicking it now brings up "autoplay" and I have to right click to get the option to open explorer ( as well as the options to unpin from taskbar and close the window).
Can anyone tell me how to get it back as it was?
TIA

Hi,

Need experts' help here. Thanks in advance.

Whenever i use window explorer (WE) or internet explorer 7 (IE), there is a pause of about 5sec after i execute a command.

For example, when i am using WE, after i double click on a folder, sometimes it will take about 5secs to open the folder.

As for IE, sometimes it takes about 5secs to open IE or whenever i click on a link in the website, it will hang there and take some time before it starts to load the new website.

There is no such problem when using Firefox 3.

When i am in the safe mode, i do not have the hang issue when using WE.

I had scanned with superantispyware, spybot, trend micro officescan and online kasperksy scan. All did not indicate any virus or malware or spyware.

May i know what is wrong with this pc?

Thanks for the help.

I would look into your region and language settings. My guess is that at some point you have selected a language/region that displays text from right to left instead of from left to right.

tskill will only kill process and allow it to restart ( explorer restarts its self )
BATCH CODE:

taskkill: this will not work its gives an error: "no such interface supported" (I tried to search for this error with no luck)

Using the pid switch will not work because explorer will use a different pid every time its restarts.

Hello Dentoz, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It sounds like you may have more than one website (ex: Internet Explorer Gallery) set as your home pages. Double check using the tutorial below to see if you have more than one home page set for IE. If you do, then you could remove any that you don't want to open as your home page(s).Internet Explorer Home Page - Add or Change
The Internet Explorer Gallery is a Microsoft website that helps you to personalize your Internet Explorer for how you access your favorite content and services by providing pinned sites, add-ons, and tracking protection lists to download and install.

Greetings,
here I come with a very simple question. I'll also try to describe my whole issue as much as I can, here it is.

Until now, I've been using the default Windows Explorer window size, but I ran an application, one game particularly and in that game I tried to adjust the resolution settings, it was a success, however when I returned back to the Windows, I found out that it 'ruined' my Explorer default window size, now it's like 5x5 centimeters small and looks totally ridiculous.

Before I'll use my mouse and drag it to make it a little bit bigger, I wanted to ask, if there is some option - to simply restore the default size.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Best Regards,
SS-Devious

A:Windows Explorer window size.

If I'm understanding you rightly, this is an issue that has been discussed in many places.

basically the answer is that there is no Microsoft solution. Windows 7 globalizes the last folder position used.

BUT, someone has created a third party solution that will run in the background keeping that memory like Windows ME/XP/Vista could do for itself:

I recently followed a tip on how to create a text file of a file folder contents. This involved creating a batch file to redirect the contents of the folder to a file, and then adding it as a action to the folder file type via the Folder Options, File Type, Advanced, New command.

This all worked fine, but has the side effect of causing windows explorer to open a new window every time I open a folder, even though the Folder Options General tab is set to "open each folder in the same window". This is driving me crazy.

The edit and remove buttons are greyed out in the Folder Options, File Type, Advanced, so I can't delete or edit the commands, so I am really stuck.

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

A website was referred to me by a friend to view a short video. (I am on a 56K modem to the server)

I had Internet Explorer 7 installed at the time and the window came up with a red 'X' in the corner. As I have been having issues with the I/E 'losing itself; then finding itself with appropriate windows displayed during the pause, I decided to try another brouser.

I downloaded Firefox-3. It received the site's window with a video icon in the corner. I did not press the issue further as I never go to u-tube, etc. and all the sites that cluttered the toolbar. It was promptly removed as I personally did not care to spend the time studying it's in and outs.

Next I went to Internet Explorer 8, which is currently on here for trial to see if the 'losing itself' would be solved by the newer version. When going to the same site mentioned above, the window now has an icon thus:

What the heck does this icon mean?

________________________________________________________________

WELL, THAT WAS SHORTLIVED! This time instead of I/E losing and finding itself, it just loses itself and shuts down. Clicking the 'WHA'HAPPEN?' button reveals this: (Data Execution Prevention) What Next?

I/E 8 is outt'a here also, back to I/E 7 <DAMN!>

After a fresh installation of Windows 98SE, when I open a

However, when I open any more windows, THEY come out to about

the same 8 1/2 by 12 1/2 size. I just can't recall what I did

Hey,

Ive had this problem for a while.

Anyways everytime I run Explorer, or open a folder on my desktop, every subfolder
opens a new window and so on. So Ill have about 6 folders open If I have a folder
with 6 sub folders to get to what I want.

WinKey + E (explorer) Settings:

Tools > Folder Options > General
Browse Folders > Open each folder in same window.

The problem is when I changed an Icon under the File Types.
I only tried changing a folder option.

I go to File Types > [File Folder] > Advanced Button.
It has Explore in bold.
In [Folder] > Advanced button it has explore in bold.

-- Notice the lowercase and uppercase difference.

I tried to get Explore to work on the one I changed, I can't remember it now.
I really dont want to reinstall windowsXPsp2, haha.

Is there a fix to this? I tried doing things manually and it didnt do any good.

Hello, I have Windows Vista basic, Panda: Antivirus and firewall and a pretty annoying problem.Whenever I start my PC a window pops up saying (translated from spanish) : Windows explorer ceased to function. Windows is getting info about the problem, this may take several minutes , a few seconds later another window appears saying: Windows Explorer is restarting, then all the icons on the desktop, the menu bar and the mouse pointer flicker and the whole process starts again...over and over. Now, this is so fast I can't even open the start menu to shut down the computer properly.Starting on Safe Mode is no good, the same thing happens. Opening the "task administrator" (cntr, shift, esc) I can see that there are 75 to 77 active processes, and the CPU use percentage goes from 5% to 100%! I have contacted the people from Panda Software but they have no idea what's wrong, they said it might be a Trojan.I used every anti-malware program listed on the Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log, but they didn't find anything. Is this malware or did I do something wrong? I didn't want to post a Highjackthis Log until I was sure. Please help!

Are you finding any suspicious processes in Task Manager? When you experience or encounter strange behavior, always check for new, unknown or suspicious processes that may be running on your system.Anytime you come across a suspicious file or one that you do not recognize, search the name using Google or the following links:BC's File DatabaseBC's Startup Programs DatabaseFile Research CenterThreatExpert Malware SearchIf no search results are found, you are given the option to "Submit a New Sample".Determining whether a file is malware or a legitimate process sometimes depends on the location (path) it is running from. One of the ways that malware tries to hide is to give itself the same name as a critical system file. However, it then places itself in a different location on your computer. A file's properties may give a clue to identifying it. Right-click on the file, Properties and examine the General and Version tabs. You can download and use Process Explorer or System Explorer to investigate all running processes and gather additional information to identify and resolve problems. These tools will show the process CPU usage, a description and its path location. If you right-click on the file in question and select properties, you will see more details about the file. Hi guys...
I have a weird problem. Every time i want to open some folder explorer opens new window for it. For example if i want to open Program Files I'll open my computer (first window), then Local disk C: (second window), then Program Files (third window). Ok, that wouldn't be hard to fix. Just go to the folder options and select open each folder in the same window. Problem is... It is already set that way. So, select open each folder in the same window is selected and it's still doing it same, mulitple windows.
I've tried to slecet another option and return to the first one but it wouldn't work.
I've scanned my computer with ad-aware, spybot, eset, avg etc. and there are no spyware, malware, viruses just that annoying thing.
Can anyone tell me how to fix or the only way to do it is reinstall?
P.S. I hope i've put the thread in correct forum...
Tnx

Hello, and please take time to help.

Windows Explorer starts automatically every time I turn on my Lenovo G505 Win 8 laptop.

The only way I found to stop Explorer auto starting it is to remove System32/userinit.exe, but
when I do this my laptop will not boot correctly on battery power.

I'd greatly appreciate any recommendations to help solve this very annoying Win 8 'feature'.

Thanks

I'm not sure if I'm in the right category with this but, I would really like to know how to reset the windows explorer windows sizes to the default size. My video card drivers were updating and I guess it changed it's resolution to a really small one and it made my explorer window smaller as well. If anyone could help me with this, I'd be very grateful.

~Raven

A:Windows Explorer Default Window Size

Just resize the Explorer window, make it as big or small you want to, and close it. Explorer remembers the last window size, and now all opened Explorer windows open in that size.

For example, open Libraries window. Resize it and close. Open now the Computer window and you'll notice it opens as big as the Libraries window was when you closed it.

Earlier today I was customizing icons in Folder Options (I run XP) and I changed the File Folder icon--no other changes whatsoever to the file type--and later I found that when I double clicked folders it opened the Windows search option instead of Explorer. I went back to Folder Options and made sure that "Open in same window" was checked. I fiddled with the action settings and managed to get it to open in Explorer, but no matter I do folders opens in NEW Explorer windows. I tried setting the default action to both explore and open, and neither worked. This is driving me crazy. What can I do?

Okay, so I downloaded a call of duty 4 single player demo and tried installing it. The setup was taking a while, and when it finally loaded up I proceeded with the further installation process. For some reason, something in the installation went wrong so I cancelled it. Since then everytime I exit a window in my computer(only windows that go into my documents, my computer, other local folders etc.) windows explorer stops responding and then restarts. This is very annoying as it freezes for about 10 seconds and then explorer comes back on. Other programs are fine when I exit them, its only when I use something related to explorer. Can somebody help? Is There a way to reinstall explorer or something? Help would be very much appreciated.

by the way, this is where i got the file:

Anyone ever had an issue with Internet explorer when you click on a link from outlook/groupwise, a new internet explorer window will open the link, but other windows that you had minimized are suddenly maximized?

This happens if 6 or 7 IE windows are opened and then grouped on the task bar. When new window is opened from a link, it will display, but previously minimized windows from the task bar will maximize behind it. Very weird behavior for IE.

Just want to know if anyone has run into this before or has any insight on what to look at/try.

I've tried playing with the tabs and new windows settings in IE to no avail.

A:Explorer maximizes other windows when opening a new window

Hi tcashon

If it only happens when there are many windows opened, if you can, try opening links by pressing the wheel on the mouse in (Thats if your mouse has a wheel)

This will open the link in a new tab rather than a new window.

Nor does this:

Yes, yes, I've checked the Open in same folder option in folder options.
I've used shellex to disable context menu items.
I've rebooted a hundred times.
This is rediculous.  Windows should only recognize ONE setting for this and that is the one in folder options.  Anything else that affects it is a BUG!
I'm on build 7100 RC.
And I'm quite frustrated with this.

Hello all,

I am having a continuous but not all the time problem, where I will double click on the Internet Explorer Icon on my desktop and an internet explorer will pop up, then another, then another and it goes on and on, like the solitary computer game. The pages just keep popping up within 3 seconds of each other, and whatever I do I can't stop them once they start. Does anyone have any idea what the problem would be with this?

Thanks,

Hello,

I don't know if this has to do with a virus, but it's been happening since last night and it's got me baffled.
Every time I start my machine (Windows 2000) a window (windows explorer) opens after startup. The window shows the folders within c:/dOCUMENTS AND sETTINGS/mY uSER (where my user is my name).
I've checked in START -> Startup but there's nothing that would account for this.
I've ran AdAware, CWShredder, Spybot S&D and a couple of antiviruses, none found anything wrong.
Any ideas about how I can fix this? Any ideas a s to what causes it?
Thanks

Unexpected results and crash of Windows Explorer (WE). If I right click on any individual element in the left pane of a WE window, I get a notice: "Windows Explorer has Stopped Working". WE then restarts. I don't have a problem when right clicking on the main headers (Computer, Network, Libraries, or Favorites) in the LH pane, I get the expected menu. Now, if I use left clicks to get the C: drive listed in the right hand pane of WE, and right click it, I get the expected menu.

2) Tried to sign up for homegroup. Complete fail. Cannot get rid if vestiges of some old homegroup. Also, couldn't get homegroup set up to work under Norton 360.

Hello, In Windows Vista, it was possible to run an elevated Windows Explorer window. To do so, enable the "Launch folder windows in a separate process" check box, log off, and then log back on. After that, you can right-click the Windows Explorer shortcut and choose "Run as administrator." This no longer works in Windows 7. It is a legitimate need to occasionally run Windows Explorer elevated; for example, to register or unregister WSC (Windows script component files) or to run Windows scripts elevated. Can anyone comment on this limitation and whether it is a flaw or by design? Thanks! Bill Stewart

My wife's computer has a problem I can't work out - though I suspect it's a simple setting I can't find.

Whenever she opens a second IE window the earlier one closes immediately. She can't have two windows on screen. This is true even if a right mouse click selects open link in new window. The link opens but the previous page shuts.

I have run Spybot, Adaware, Cleanup and virus checker.

I have now set up Mozilla for her which works fine. but I'm still puzzled why IE doesn't work.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I'm running WinXP since 2001 and never have encountered such a problem before.

It began after the last fresh installation. Anytime I try to open the fonts window from Control Panel, it causes Windows Explorer to crash. Error message refers to fontext.dll.

I tried to repair the fonts folder with Tweak UI, but it didn't helped.

The problem occurs only when I use Control Panel to open the fonts folder. There are no problems when opening the fonts folder directly from My Computer.

Any ideas?

Hey all, first post!

I work in IT for a hotel management company, and one of our brand new Lenovo desktop PC's (Win7 Pro x64) has an intermittent issue. All Windows Updates have been applied as of yesterday. Sometimes when she logs into her PC in the AM, she'll open Windows Explorer to get to files etc, and it opens to a blank window. If she moves the mouse into that window, it shows the blue spinner like it's thinking, and it'll just sit like that forever. No errors etc. Now, if she hits F5 or selects "Refresh" from the menu, files/folders/drives show up just fine.

It also happened when she went into Devices and Printers to select a new default printer, nothing in that window would show up, no hardware and no printers until refreshed.

I've tried the icon.db fix, and have searched the internet to see what other suggestions there are. This is not a virus/malware of any type. The /sfc scannow returned nothing wrong. I don't have a plan right now, and since this is intermittent, I'm not sure when she'll have this happen again.

Any suggestions? Seems like this is a wide spread issue from what I've Google'd on this topic.

about window colors... I have this problem with windows 7, although it's never been really well implemented in any version of any windows - I can't stand the white background of all windows, and I would like to have a darker background. the white hurts my eyes because I usually work in a fairly dark environment. I suppose a lot of people have this same problem. well, windows just doesn't want to allow that. I either use the old, super-ugly windows look, in which case I can actually change theme colors more or less enough to create a dark theme... or..... is there any other way? I'm even open to tweaking this damn thing with non-supported applications, just... I need a grey/dark theme for my windows...
anybody, any ideas?

and btw, speaking of themes, windows 7 must be the worst of all windows so far, it's really ridiculous that they even call them "themes", and the "customize your own theme" kind of tutorials are probably the hugest waste of time humanity has ever seen, hahahaha. really, really ridiculous. cuz basically, there is only 1 theme. period. same with XP. just changing the color of the taskbar doesn't really make it a different theme. makes it - the saaaaaaaaaaame theme, with slight taskbar color variation.

I have been getting this same error for several weeks and I really do not know what could be causing it. All I know is that every time I use the browse command or open file command in any program, the resulting window looks like this: http://embed.gyazo.com/4870a31016460...ac434b8e4c.png

A:Using Browse in Any Program Causes Invisible Windows Explorer window

Try a clean startup - Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup
Then if no go, get CCleaner - Tools - Startup - Context Menu - save to text file (to know which are enabled or not) - then disable them one by one. See if this helps.
