Infected PC only works in Safe mode - Help please

Q: Infected PC only works in Safe mode - Help please

I would be very grateful for some help sorting out a friend's PC please.

I've read the First Steps page but cannot carry out all of the suggested scans.

When I boot the PC normally, it works very slowly loading XP Home, then suddenly reboots itself before getting to the login screen. I discovered that it will run in Safe Mode with Networking and I'm using it now to create this thread!

I've run dds.scr and the scan result is pasted below. (Attach.txt is included here in a zipped file). When I try to run GMER nothing happens. The egg timer appears for a few seconds but nothing more. I have downloaded SPTDinst-v162-x86.exe. Executing this file results in a popup stating "No SPTD version was detected". The Uninstall button was greyed-out but the Install button looked inviting, so I clicked it and was prompted to re-start Windows. I restarted XP in Safe Mode and it appeared to load SPTD.sys.

Before looking at this forum I was going to attempt a Windows re-install and backed up My Documents onto a USB memory stick, which I then scanned with Avira on a another laptop. This revealed 16 music files, which had been downloaded with Limewire (I presume), all containing the same virus - EXP/ASF.GetCodec.Gen. I've uninstalled LimeWire now.

I have tried to install Avira AntiVir Personal (in Safe Mode) but, after extracting a load of files to a Temp folder, it gets part way through 'Preparing Installation...' then crashes(?).

I don't know what to try next - please help. Thanks very much.

My cousin's mouse stopped working on his computer after installing a game expansion. He asked me to try to fix it and I noticed his computer was heavily infected with viruses. I've removed a lot of malicious files through Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware; however, the mouse still doesn't work, and I think there are still viruses. I also tried to reinstall the drivers for the mouse off the manufacturer's website(Logitech), but it didn't help. Since the mouse only works in safe mode, I can only run GMER in safe mode.DDS (Ver_10-03-17.01) - NTFSx86 NETWORK Run by Administrator at 19:10:45.24 on Mon 09/20/2010Internet Explorer: 7.0.6000.16643Microsoft? I'm new here and in hopes of getting this resolved. I just installed the new Norton Systemworks 2005 and rebooted after installation. When the boot screen got up to the blue screen with the Windows XP logo before displaying the login names where you put in your password, it just stops. I restarted a few times and waiting a few more times thinking it may need to 'finish' installing. But each time gave the same results. Finally, I went in with 'Safe Mode' and got in with no problems. Tried again in normal mode after looking around for any obvious problems (none found)... back to square one. Tried again in 'Safe Mode with Networking' and it failed like normal mode so I suspected a networking problem??? The last thing I tried which made me mad is that I tried to uninstall Norton Systemworks in 'Safe Mode' and that failed!! Anyone in these forums know the cure? :dead:

A:Unable to get to login screen, works in Safe Mode but in Safe Mode w/ Networking

Just a thought

Safe-Mode
Start \ Run \ msconfig \ diagnostic startup
disable any services attached to your most recent install and restart
should get warning next boot about using msconfig, its ok
One key service that needs to be available is the installer service
Try the uninstall, if doesn't complete
Try the uninstall string in the registry only if you know what you are doing

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Under it you will see a list of installed programs. Some don?t show up as words but you can figure out what they are by looking at their values. What you are looking for is the uninstall string. Double click that key as if you were going to modify its value. Do a CTRL + C to copy and then exit the registry editor.

Go to START \ RUN and paste the uninstall sting and hit enter. This should launch the uninstall.

Just a thought though as I am not infront of a test system at the moment. You should research this a little further so you have a clear understanding of what you can and can't do with msconfig.

or simpler yet

Safe-Mode

Start \ Programs \ Access. \ System Tools \ System Restore

Select restore point prior to install of whats giving you the problem.

Again, Good Luck

PS If you try to install it again, turn of antivirus and other open programs etc..

Your crash dumps are not showing any finite probable cause. In such a situation, it is better to enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers.
Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

   Information
Why Driver Verifier:
It puts a stress on the drivers, ans so it makes the unstable drivers crash. Hopefully the driver that crashes is recorded in the memory dump.

How Can we know that DV is enabled:
It will make the system bit of slow, laggy.

   Warning
Before enabling DV, make it sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer. You can check it easily by using CCleaner looking at Tools > System Restore.

If there is no points, make a System Restore Point manually before enabling DV.

   Tip

If you fail to get on the Desktop because of DV, Boot into Advanced Boot Options > Safe mode. Disable DV there. Now boot normally again, and try following the instruction of enabling DV again.
If you cannot boot in Safe mode too, do a System Restore to a point you made ... Read more

There is no malicious software.I have gone through Malwarebytes,TDSSKiller,Kaspersky, etc.Nothing was found.
It doesn't entirely freeze.I can move the cursor which usually is a blue circle.Sometimes more things like highlight icons w/ the cursor or the clock keeps going.
Sometimes when I press ctrl+alt+del and open task manager, the programs that didn't open when I clicked on them will open up.Most times pressing ctrl+alt+del does nothing though.
It works fine in Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking.I have disabled all start ups and every service except Microsoft ones and restarted in Normal mode.Still the same problem.
I used checkdisk and it said nothing is wrong.
There are random times where it works fine.No specific time of day.It just happens. Most times it is this way though.

A:Laptop only works in safe mode.Hangs w/ blue circle in Normal mode.

Did you disable the startup items and services in Safe Mode, and then restart in normal mode?

Essentially what you are trying to do is a Clean Boot, this has to be performed in normal mode.

Windows only opens in safe mode, tried reloading drivers, last known good configuration, etc. When in normal mode black screen only, when acessing task manager shows all processes stopped and will not allow me to start them.

A:Black screen when start in normal mode, works in safe mode only.

Hello CliffordJ. Microsoft Security Essentials is installed, correct? Many MSE users running Vista (but not all) suffered black screen after login following installation of Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - 4.9.218.0 (KB3140527), released about a month ago. In fact there is already a thread here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/606422/windows-vista-x64-bksod-after-login-or-no-access-in-normal-mode-suspect-mse/. The posters there disabled MSE 4.9 in Safe Mode by unticking a brand-new setting in the UI (Administrator > Turn on this app). Another method of escaping this situation would be to restore your system to a point before the update was installed, then hide the update in Windows Update. That would allow you to resume using MSE 4.8 if you wish.

I am extremely curious why this happens to many but not all MSE users running Vista. If more advanced forum members ask you for further information, I hope you will cooperate. Above all, I wonder if any other security software with real-time protection is installed (or perhaps improperly uninstalled)? Of course there is a possibility that your issue is something else...

Everytime i open my pc up in normal mode, it seems to restart itself within a few seconds to a few minutes, It tends to happen when i open up a program like Chrome. I',m currently on safe mode with networking and have done registry cleaners, updated video card drivers and looked for viruses, yet nothing has seemed wrong, I've also done a system restore to when my pc was working fine, but it still was happening, I saw on another post here that i should post my msinfo32 so here you go, Thanks.

Hello,
I have this problem with my laptop - sometimes I cannot login - after choosing the user the screen freezes or after logging in it works only for a few minutes in regular mode (I can do things over those minutes like open firefox, but I cannot open folders, sometimes I can open the task manager or even some programs) but then it freezes and I have to shutdown the computer manually by pushing the power button. When I tried pushing crtl+alt+del I got a message "The logon process was unable to display security and logon options when ctrl+alt+delete was pressed. If the operatin system does not respond, press esc or restart the computer by using the power switch". I don't know if this helps, but I try to add as much as I can. Sorry it it's not relevant - my knowledge about computers and IT is minimal.
The computer runs fine in safe mode.
So I tried system restore to a week before when the computer was still fine and it didn't work. So I reinstalled a graphics driver (Intel HD Graphics Driver) as I found on the internet that similar problems got fixed by reinstalled videocard drivers. And it worked, everything started to run smoothly again in the regular mode. As normally I allowed windows updates and after restarting my computer, the problems came back.
I assumed that the problem was the updates so I uninstalled most of them (KB2930275; KB2923961; KB2925418; KB2929755; KB2929733 and KB2918077) but the problem was still there and I was unable to unin... Read more

A:BSOD when trying to boot in normal mode, safe mode works fine

You may need to run SFC up to 3 times for it to have a chance to repair all files.

If it won't then you can consider a Repair Install.

However be aware that factory preinstalled Win7 is one of the worst possible installs of Win7 one can have, larded with bloatware and duplicate utilties that intefere with better versions built into Win7. So I would strongly consider doing the vastly superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

If you decide to try to repair you can also capture the BSOD file and post it up for one of our BSOD analysts as shown here: Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions - Windows 7 Forums

Hello everyone,

I have a Dell Optiplex GX270 with a pentium 4 processor, yes I know, old, but it works. It is running on Windows XP Pro, version 2002 with service pack 3. I have cable internet connected to a Linksys WRT100 router. As of late, my computer has been acting a little funny. I cannot seem to browse the internet for more than 5 minutes (with either Firefox 3 or IE 8) in normal mode, but the computer shows that I am connected to the internet. I was connected via a usb wireless adaptor, but since it has been acting strange, I have removed the wireless adaptor with the software and am now connected through an ethernet cord to the router which is connected to the cable modem.

The internet works fine in safe mode with networking though. Plus, in normal mode, I am able to update services such as McAfee virus scan and Spybot, as well as remote connect to another computer, which require internet although the internet browsers say that it is not connected. I have ran Spybot, Ad-Aware, and McAfee virus scan already as well, all have not found anything. My roommate's laptop is able to connect to the network, via ethernet and wireless adapter, thus I do not believe it is either the router or modem. In device manager, my network adaptor icons did not show either an "x" or "!" icon. I have tried "WinsockxpFix" but that does not seem to solve my problem. I have tried going into "msconfig" to disable all of the "startup" pro... Read more

The network connections show that it is connected and the signal strength is excellent. I then have to keep restarting the laptop like 3 to 4 times and it works. Its kind of frustrating to keep doing this all the time and besides i am scared by restarting the laptop so many time can harm it.

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, kaspersky or Mcafee or any free security suites like zonealarm, AVG , Webroot etc

Lenovo will also come with a trial ware program - cant remember which
I would also remove AVG 2013 - using the removal tool - see below

Win 7 Normal Mode won't start, will go past Starting up Screen and just hit a Black screen and will hit a Crash Dump (blue error screen)..... I can boot into safe mode fine and I have fun CHKSDK and after a reboot it fixed a few problems but I hit the same Crash Dump Screen. I have also made sure my whole pc is all clean and connected, no corroding parts etc etc, made sure my pci-e slot is default etc etc, no luck at all...

Its a new installation and worked fine last night and early this morning after separate boots. But as soon as I booted this afternoon it wouldn't load and would hit the blue error crash dump screen....

So any suggestions?

Just last night My main HDD died also which is why I had to use my secondary HDD as my main....

Not sure exactly what happened but couple days ago the laptop started to hang up or freeze when I tried to run any application, such as a browser, control panel, and even task manager. If I need to turn it off I have to hold the power button which I know is not good but otherwise I would not be able to reboot. If I go into safe mode I can use the computer somewhat sluggish but I can at least open up programs and even get on the internet. I cannot do system restore as this had been turned off. I had a conflicting driver issue that I installed, but that has not helped, I dont know what else to do. Please help this is my only computer.

I have been getting BSOD errors whenever booting into regular mode. Safe mode is fine (I have tweaked the registry so I have sound in safe mode) My system specs are in my profile, but used Winaudit for full specs. The winaudit report in formatted text is too big for an attachment. I have 2 attachments to this post, including zipped up minidumps.
Could my registry tweak for sound have something to do with this?
Perfmon /report was run, but it says:

An error occured while attempting to generate the report.

The system cannot find the path specified.

You have several issues. It might be easier to simply clean install.

You choice, here are the most obvious problems

Avg

Kaspersky

Pctools

Symantec

One or all of the above are causing an issue with tcpip.sys which need to be fixed.
If you decide you want to remove instead of clean install we have the removal tools inks.

I started having said problem during virus removal.
I had removed multiple virus via malware, SAS, aSquare, combofix, and, I could not connect to any websites.
Via my wireless connection, windows said my signal strength was good and it was connected to the wireless network.
I tried pinging different websites like yahoo.com, google.com, etc and all my requests timed out.

So I decided to trouble shoot.
Booting into safe mode w/ networking worked fine. I was able to ping and connect to websites via Internet Explorer.
I ran SpybotS&D, and it removed a win32.agent and some sort of malware that had firewall in the name... forgot exactly what it was, and I don't have the log on hand.
Anyways, after this removal I tried again to ping website like yahoo.com, google.com, etc, and the ping worked fine.
However, I still could not connect to any websites via Internet Explorer. I tried reinstalling IE, but its the same story.
During this whole process, I have been able to use Internet Explorer succesfully only in safe mode.

Any ideas? I doubt it is a virus directly causing my problems. It's had a thorough cleaning. Maybe some left over wreckage?
I doubt its a firewall issue. CA's personal firewall is installed on the machine. I know CA antivirus is running in safe mode, I'm not so sure if the firewall does or not. I'm assuming it does.
I don't know where to even start on this. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Can't browse in normal mode, works fine in safe mode.

Hello,You should not browse in Safe Mode because your security programs do not function in safe mode which means that more malware finds its way onto your computer. This issue is related to the issue you have posted here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/240716/sdra64exe-uacinitdll-fakealert-vundo/ Because you have this log posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. first, a message popped up every time i logged into my account: "one of the libraries needed to run this application could not be found." i'm not sure what application it was referring to! mozilla firefox is not working, every time i open it, it says the connection is interrupted. internet explorer also does not work but msn does work, so i am connected to the internet. mozilla does work in safe mode though. i've turned firewalls off as well. also, my trend micro internet security doesn't work, i can't open it, so i removed it frm my pc and installed avg free 8.

please, i'm not that great with computers so any help will be REALLY APPRECIATED!

Ive been having this problem for a few days now, when I start the computer, after a few minutes,no matter what I am doing or if I am not doing anything,it will freeze, the mouse and keyboard wont work and the clock stops, the 2 little monitors that show my internet connection stop flashing too...sometimes,it freezes for a few seconds and then works, and the same thing happens over and over again until it finally freezes forever...other times,it just freezes once and stays there,Ive waited hours for it to work and nothing...

the only solution is to shut down using the button, and I know that is not a good thing to do..I did a system restore,I restored it to a day before the problem started, but when it restarted to finish the restore it froze again and the restore wasnt completed,I had to shut it down pressing the button and I realized later that I lost all the restore points I had...

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum and really hoping you can help me :)

My internet has not been working on my laptop, which happened very suddenly 2-3 days ago. The connection is fine on my other computer and phone, so I know its not the internet itself. Even on the laptop, it SAYS the wifi is connected, but its not working. Firefox was instantly crashing, it wouldn't even bring up the browser window. Chrome gives me a "DNS address not found" error for every site I try and IE wont load anything.

I've tried flushing my DNS, using that ipconfig /refresh and /renew thing. I've tried troubleshooting the wifi connection, disabling/enabling it. I ran a Malware Bytes scan and only found a couple of "pup" programs/cookies that have been deleted. Currently running a SuperAntiSpyware scan.

The thing is, I tried using the internet in Safe Mode with Networking and it works just fine! So that means a program or something on my computer is causing it, right? There were issues with my Teredo Tunneling Psuedo-Interface driver the other day, it had a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark, but I did a couple of fixes that I found on help sites and that exclamation is gone now.

Please help, I really want to use my laptop on the internet again ;_;

Oh, and the specs for my comp are:
Lenovo Win7 PC
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30 GHz
RAM: 6 GB
Windows 7 - 64 bit operating system

A:Internet works in safe mode w/ networking but not normal mode

In Network and Sharing Center, there is a wizard to troubleshoot connection problems. If that doesn't work, you could "set up a new connection".

Recently purchased this all in one PC on second hand. It initially had Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit Japanese OS. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit English OS after purchasing and installed the Drivers from the DVD which came along with the PC. Ran windows update till date. But got BSOD many times. Thinking of Hard drive issue, changed the hard disk first time with another used one and next time with newly purchased one.

All the time installed Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit English OS and installed the Drivers from the DVD which came along with the PC. Ran windows update till date. But in all 3 hard disks getting the BSOD error.

Installed Microsoft Security Essentials each time and checked for virus. Ran Dell Diagnostics downloaded from Dell website and found no issues.

Got "Session "Microsoft Security Client OOBE" stopped due to the following error: 0xC000000D" error on Event viewer many times. After searching some forums deleted MSE.

Ran the SF diagnotic utility and uploading the file for your reference.

Please help me to overcome this issue.

Hey guys, I seem to be having trouble, and I'm not terribly inclined with laptops and computers, mine is an HP G62 laptop, and that's about as far as I know about it. The other day I went to use it, opened it up, I had 3 tabs open (google chrome), and I tried to open a new tab. All new tabs were freezing, and my itunes had frozen as well. I tried closing the laptop, hoping it would go into sleep mode, but it didn't, it stayed running. I reopened it and the screen stayed off, so I did a hard reset (holding the power button to turn it off) and started it back up. I started it in normal mode, and logged on, but after loading from the log on screen, it went to a black screen with just the cursor, and stayed there. I did another hard reset, and started it in safe mode, and now this is how I'm currently running. I've tried disabling the display drivers and restarting, that worked momentarily, but froze shortly after. Next, I tried a system restore, which did absolutely nothing, and then I ran chkdsk and, again, nothing. After all this, I decided to try uninstalling the display drivers, which, once again, did nothing. This seems to be all the info I have gathered from online, and through friends' help, there seems to be nothing left to do that may fix this problem. Anyone have any idea on where to go from here?

A:Black Screen in Normal Mode. Only Safe Mode Works.

Hello ericberard,

You?re having a problem with the computer going to a black screen.

First test the hardware.

Turn off the computer

As you power it back on, tap the F2 key. This will load hardware diagnostics.

Once the screen loads run the startup test.

If this is windows 7 and the startup test pass.

Power back off the computer.

As you power it back on, tap the F8 key. This will load Advanced Boot Options.

Select Last Known Good Configuration.

This will take the system back to when everything was working correctly.

Clicking the White Kudos star on the left is a way to say Thanks!

Let me know how everything goes.

Have a good day.

Hi there to who ever may be reading.

First of all thanks for taking a look at my issue, the problem as follows :

It shuts down (ie turns off, need to manually press the power button to boot up again) when getting to windows xp desktop.

what i have tried so far:
complete reformat windows xp home

complete reformat windows xp pro

taken the battery out of the motherboard for 30 secs then putting it back in(sometimes this works and it did for a while inabling me to install some softwarelike mobo drivers then after
reboot the problem persisted)

Following that i have tried different batterys and no battery at all each not solving the issue

started in safe mode and installed service pack 3

cleaned processor and heat sink

tried different psu

tried different hard drive (with fresh install)

I originally thought it would be a power issue but i have left it on overnight in safe mode as a test and it never shut down. It only seems to shut down in normal mode! i thought it might be a software issue but i have reinstalled it with different discs and different versions.

I dont think it is a hardware issue as it doesnt turn off when in safe mode, but then i dont think its a software issue because of the multiple clean installs that i have done. So i really dont know.

Please, sombody put me out of my misery. . . . What is wrong with my computer!

Also check for a system restore point.

Use your Install DVD. When on the install now screen choose repair in the left side of screen. Select your OS. Then When at the GUI select system restore. Choose a date before all this happened.

Greetings.
As the headline above says i have this problem for few days now, and still can't solve it.
First day when it happened it turned off only once, and after that i turned it on normally and it worked fine.
Second day it happened few times, but i managed to "make it through".
But today it is impossible, whenever i want to go on Normal Mode it turns off, and i am writing this in safe mode with networking option.
I asked my friend on the phone about it (not really useful when you're asking for help on the phone), he told me to try to to turn off some startup programs in System Configuration Utility, so i removed some and i left only my anti-virus program, some nVidia thing, probably a driver i don't know, and some win32.dll file ,that is pretty much important i think. I even tried to restore my system backing it few days backwards and both of these options worked! - for 30 minutes or so, until it turned off again.
I really don't know what else can i do.
I am well acquainted with a bit more than computer basics, but something really advanced has yet to be learned.
So please, help me solve this, i can't think of anything else, the only thing i am sure is that this problem is not a hardware problem.

A:My PC turns off in Normal Mode but works in Safe Mode

Hi Majestic616, welcome to the forums.

To be honest, it does sound suspiciously like malware..especially the win32.dll listing in msconfig. Your restore point is most probably infected too, hence why the problems reoccur after using system restore.

Your best option is to follow the instructions in the link below:

ISSUE

Keyboard some times does not work in the normal mode and if checked in
the safe mode, it works just fine
If checked it may find that the Drivers for the keyboard is not
working, reinstalling the drivers for the keyboard , downloading the
updates for the KB will not work.

RESOULTION

(try the Following steps in normal mode and then if not possible then)

1.Boot the computer in safe mode
2.Start.......Control Panel......Accessibility Options.......Uncheck
all the check marks
in the Sticky Keys , Filter Keys and Toggle Keys

3. Click on ok to save the changes
4. Restart the computer in safe mode

Keyboard Works in Normal Mode now.

A:Keyboard Works in Safe Mode and not in the Normal Mode

Mmmmmmkay. Don't know whether to write it down for future reference or offer a solution.
Sure would like to know if it's a USB or PS/2 kb.

Hello,

I'm running a Gateway NV Series and as of last night I have fallen victim to the problem that Windows 7 seems to be plagued with. My internet has completely stopped working, both Ethernet and Wireless. I have tried many of the fixes suggested in this forum and others, but none of them have worked. So I booted into safe mode with networking and low and behold, the wireless and Ethernet work just fine here.

Why is this?

I don't like to run the internet on safe mode, and I would to have my computer back working at normal capacity. How can I fix this?

Specs on my laptop are here:

A:No Internet in Normal Mode; Works in Safe Mode

Hi and Welcome to SF.

Your safe mode loads up with the bare essentials to get things working. Using builtin drivers i would think and no third party softwares. If your safe mode don't work, more than likely u have a system/hardware issue.

As for your normal mode, go into Device Manager, any noticable issues?

My internet wont work unless I'm in 'Safe Mode With Network Support'. This just started 2 days. All other computers on my network are fine, except this one. Can anyone suggest anything?

I'm running Windows XP.

I've done countless virus scans and adware scans.

I got frustrated last time with hijack this, so I just checked off everything and clicked "Fix". That didnt work.

I managed to fix some things in the Event Viewer. Now I get Event 7031 and that is the only error I receive. Details -
"The Workstation Service Library service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 397 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 3000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."
One time I thought I had it fixed, but like 10 min later it went back into safe mode.

Ran something called Win Sock XP fix which basically restored tcp/ip settings but that didnt work. That was a temporary fix. NOw I'm stuck without a clue.

Ran symantec a few times. Found a few viruses, but they got deleted quickly. Here's a list of viruses they found and fixed.

userint32.exe virus name W32.Allim
rdriv.sys virus name Trojan Horse
msaccrt.exe virus name W32.Allim
lanmany.exe virus name Backdoor.Staprew.B
aight.exe virus name Backdoor.Trojan

Does anyone have any reccommendations? Re-formatting isnt really an option.

All seems fine in Safe Mode.

Buttons freeze when I'm in Normal Mode. I left the computer on yesterday while i was out and it worked in Normal mode when I got home but not completely and I can't duplicate it.

So many things are wrong. Restore points were removed. Printer is off the network (Device manager shows yellow warning sign.)
Superfetch isn't running.
Mouse cursor bounces around when typing. I read I need to fix tapping but printer needs to be on network but I can't get it back on the network. Printer spool won't start.

Before coming here, I've run startup repair, scf /scannow, Combofix (not that I learned anything or that it fixed anything.) Malwarebytes, Norton scan, Trendmicro scan

I've tried msconfig no services but Microsoft, no startup items.

Not making any progress.

I was having a hard time using your link to FRST64. I kept being redirected to the home page.

Thanks so much for helping. Hope I did everything properly

# What the problem is - I CANT access websites like google or yahoo or anything with internet explorer even though my ISP is perfectly OK and everything is connected, and it says in network conncections i AM connected to the internet via highspeed LAN/Broadband. I noticed that when i turn my router on and off a message comes up and its says my IP has to be fixed or something. With the FiOS tech support they said i pinged everything fine and that i could go on google and yahoo via the command prompt but for some reason i couldn't in internet explorer. in my internet options i went to connections and i just ticked the auto detect under LAN settings and nothing else.

Here's the situation: my daughter and I open her computer to clean it and have a look at the video card. We pull the card blow out the dust and reinsert it. We also pull one of two memory cards (to see what's in there) blow out the dust and reset that.

Now hit start button: Windows begins to boot, it finds the drives, then we see the Windows screen - the three bars dance across their track - but we get a black screen that says: Sorry, We apologize Windows failed to start. There may have been hardware or software changes blah blah blah...then it asks if I want to start in Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, or Normal Mode.

Safe Mode works just fine. No issues using any hardware or software.

But if I try to start normally, it quickly tries to reboot, shutting down the video output (the monitor goes into no signal - energy saving mode) then the process start a new.

We made no changes! We opened it back up and made sure all the cables and connections were secure. But no luck.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I've installed Windows XP SP2 Fresh after I had some other hardware problems. Everything seemed to work fine until I managed to get into Windows. The OS refuses to read ANY dvd/cd that I put inside. If instead, I boot to Safe-Mode, the DVD-RW works fine. Of course I tried to switch the DVD-RW with another one but the results were the same.

My system specs are:
Motherboard: ASUS P5LD2 (with latest Bios 1503)
CPU: P4 EE 3.73 Ghz
HDD 40 GB Maxtor Eide (Master)
Pioneer DVD-RW 110D (Slave)
HDD 250 GB Maxtor (SATA)
RAM 2x 1024 Vitesta 533 Mhz
VGA Nvidia 7900 GTClick to expand...

My guess is that it's a software/windows problem since NO DVD-RW or DVD-Rom works unless I am in safe-mode. I've spent almost 48 hours googling for a solution but with no luck. For instance some guys were suggesting to regedit something related to an uninstall of burning software (but since I'm on a clean install it doesn't apply); or others were suggesting to "uninstall" the dvd and let windows recognize it after a reboot (tried but didn't solve it), others again suggested to install Chipset's drivers of my MoBo (did it but didn't work), or to upgrade the Bios to the latest version (did that too, but nothing changed). Also I did all the hardware suggestions I found (like try another cable, invert cables, mount units one by one etc... but still everything work everywhere BUT in windows normal-mode)

Something that was strange though is that I installed W... Read more

After doing an AOL update, my computer stopped connecting to the interent, and AOL and all other browsers keep searching for a connection method. I had "parental controls" installed for all browsers, through AOL.
After the update, that program couldn't be found.
I assumed I couldn't connect because I wasn't logged into that program.

I am able to get to the connection address from my service provider, and it passes all the connection tests.

I can also connect to the internet in "safe mode" and it works just fine.
When I try to start a program such as AOL, it says it needs to set up a connection.... and doesn't find it (though my modem is fine).
It then tells me I should use a dial up to connect.

I have a feeling it's something that isn't checked or set up properly.

I contacted something 5 days ago and have been working on getting back to normal. I have purchased McAfee Total Protection 2009, downloaded SuperAntispyware and Malwarebytes from another thread here. I used a backup computer to download and burn a cd then found out I can get IE to work through Safe Mode after running all the things I have found. I am running Windows XP. I have also ran Windows online live scan and it came up with just some registry issues it fixed.

If you need more information please let me know and thank you for your time.

Hi All, i just received a dell Optiplex GX620 from a friend, because she bought a new one. I brought it home, started it up, and it froze just before the XP log in screen. I started it in safe mode, and I can access everything from there, except the internet. I tried to do an OS restore through the i386 folder, and it says that there are files missing. I don't have the boot disks, she lost them the last time she moved. I tried the <ctrl>+<F11> and that didn't do anything. I have run out of ideas on what to do. Please help!

I had IE 7 installed on Windows Vista and when the latest Malware updates came out from Micorsoft I downloaded them and IE stopped working unless I am in safe mode. Networkiing is workingI can tracrt and ping to domains on the net so DNS, DCHP everything is working fine, email works fine too. When I restore back and take the updates off everything works fine again and I can access the Internet via IE in normal mode. So I tried just updating to IE8 to see if maybe that would work better with the updates. When I applied IE 8 the same problem happened no access unless in safe mode. I ran a hijack this

Hey Guys...
First of all thanks for all your help on previous issues I have had. Anyway, I am on my brother-in-laws computer and he is having strange issue. His internet is not connecting. I have tried everything. IP address, DNS and everything are fine. Renewed everything, he has a working IP address. I CAN connect to the internet using the web browser included in "bitlord" program and also AIM connects to its server without a problem. However if I try to connect via IE or Firefox they do not work ("web page could not be displayed") UNLESS I am in safe mode. Then everything works fine. What should I do.... I have already tried the following..

1) Spybot search and destroy
2) Combofix
3) Ad-aware search
4) Reinstall IE7

thanks!

I have a Dell Vostro operating with XP. The other day, I started getting the "blue screen" with a message about "irql not less or equal..." I was able to run Driver Update software and update all my drivers, but I still kept getting the error; in fact, it started doing it after only about 5-10 minutes after booting.

I tried restoring to a week prior to when all the problems started, but that didn't work. I tried reloading a windows registry file with a backup from a week or so ago as well -- no difference. I ran a complete registry file "fix" software.. nada.

Now, the computer boots, runs for a little while and freezes completely -- it doesn't even go into the blue screen.

I am able to run it fine in safe mode with networking but I'm not sure what to do next. I researched this enough to know that it *probably* relates to a driver problem (although it sounds as though it could be just about anything). I uninstalled quite a few programs, but that didn't help.

In safe mode, I can still run my Driver Update and uninstall drivers (or go to the device manager) but I just don't know where to start! There are so many drivers -- how do I know which to uninstall? It would take about nine months to try each one individually, test the computer, then try another one.

Any suggestions as to how I should proceed? Is there anyway to know which driver is the culprit? Or should I remove everything, format the drive and reinstall w... Read more

A:It works under 'safe mode' - what do I do next?

Aha! I couldn't bear to wait for an answer so I started messing around. I had been ripping a ton of CDs lately, and formatting some, so I thought I'd start with my CD drives. I disabled the drives for both and my computer has been working perfectly in regular (not safe) mode, going on 6 hours now. Tomorrow, I'll enable one and test it, then the other if necessary. If I'm lucky, that will prove it's the drives or their drivers. I'm still under warranty for the computers, so if it's the drives, I'm home safe.

Wish me luck and I'll leave another post tomorrow to let you know how things turned out; perhaps my experience will help someone else in the future.

Hi There,

I have a really strange problem, I.E. will only function in safe mode. This started last week, it was fine for the last two years. On a regular boot it'll only give me the "could not open/test network error page". Nothing else seems wrong but I can't access the network through games or Kazaa in normal mode either.

I looked around in the forums and didn't see anyone complaining about a similar error. I'm running XP on a 2.4 P4 with 1024mb. The problem occured when I downloaded DirectX 9c of all things. I've deleted and re-installed XP three times, installed service pack 2, had more problems and have gone back to just the critical updates. I've re-installed and repaired I.E. 6 several times, I've run 10 different anti-virus/spy removal programs (Avast, spysweeper, Panda online, microtrend, spybot, ad-aware, cws-sredder, spy-doctor, sygate firewall, A2, ect...) I've repaired my registry sfc/ scannow, I've powered off my modem, checked my nic card, released/renewed my I.P., I've run the Winsock repair tool. Man I'm at my the end of my rope here...

I hate asking for help but I want to get to the bottom of this. My only thought was that some how critical files to load I.E are being blocked by one of my anti-virus/spy-removal apps or there's a nasty virus that is going un-detected that can't function within Safe mode. What exe's are required by XP to run I.E. ? Any help would be awesome, I... Read more

I have Windows 7 x64 installed . Everything seems to be working fine i think but i'm not really sure, except Java (JRE/JDK) is not working both in IE, Chrome or Firefox, either x64 or x86 versions.

Thing is it's working in Safe Mode. Everything with Java in Safe Mode works, although in Normal mode it isnt even detected, applets wont start or give alerts to continue with the loading of the applet.

Also another thing that bothers me is that i have installed some time ago a Microsoft Windows Update, and that messed with my IE and Firefox browsers, they only work with software rendering instead of GPU rendering. if i disable this option IE and FF become useless and they only work without extensions. anyone knows the problem i'm talking about and if a fix is available.

About the main problem Java not working i'm really clueless. Tried cleaning the registry with ccleaner, installing/uninstalling with Revo Uninstaller and Martau Total Uninstaller, i found the remains with the program Everything and removing them with Revo, ran Malwarebytes. nothing came up.

A:JRE only works in Safe Mode. Tried everything i could

Uh oh!  Registry cleaners are snake oil.  They aren't needed, they do no good, and they can cause problems that're difficult to diagnose and very difficult to fix.  I'd back up any data you don't want to lose, then restore to factory settings.
And by the way, Java has had a whole lot of problems reported with it.  I'd do without it if possible.

so my boss gave my husband a couple computers that won't start correctly. One of them only runs in safe mode and my internet connection does not work on it. I tried system restore but I am unable to access it. It keeps saying I need to run in normal mode to turn system restore on but I can only run the computer in safe mode. The last configuration that "works" option just starts Windows and then shuts down completely. Is there anything I can do to restore Windows or something to get it running smoothly? Is there a way to bypass the disabled system restore?

My internet was going fine and then all of the sudden it stopped working. If i restart it works for one or two IE pages but is really slow. AIM works but is also really slow. But I can use both fine on Safe mode with networking. Any thoughts? I'm assuming its some sort of process messing it up.

A:Internet only works on Safe Mode?

Could be a hijacking issue, maybe? spyware is also possible. i'd try downloading ad-aware, cleaning out the spyware and seeing if that helps. could also be a virus, to be honest.

When in safe mode windows uses a safe driver and a safe resolution. Try removing the graphics driver in device manager then rebooting and reinstalling it.

Hello! I am really hoping someone can help me with my issue. Because I am not sure what is important information and what is not, I am going to include everything I know.

First of all, this issue has been happening for awhile now. I thought my computer was dying and could do nothing about it, so I bought a desktop. But now I believe the problem may be fixed.

Computer Information: I have an HP Pavillion dv9500 Notebook PC. I run Vista, version/build 6.0, Service Pack 2, 32 bit. The computer runs on an Intel Core 2 duo CPU T7100. I have a NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS. If you need more info here, please ask.

Description of Issue: I have found that my computer will either crash while I am using it or after it has gone to sleep and I try to bring it back up. If I am using the computer, the resulting screen will usually be a 1" square (possibly where the cursor was) that is green and the background is generally black. When trying to reboot into normal mode, the Notebook boots to the point I see "Microsoft Windows Vista" with the green bar above that to show you it is loading. The screen then moves into the lines. There are many short horizontal lines stacked on top of each other that form verticle bars across the screen. The horizontal lines blink on and off which makes it look like the verticle bars are moving up and down. (I hope that makes sense.) The screen has a black background and the lines are mostly green and white, but sometimes other colors as well.

A:Crashes/Safe Mode only works

Hello Sarah

Based on your description of the problem there is a good chance that the issue is with your NVIDIA graphics card.

The fact that things work normally in Safe Mode is not surprising. Safe Mode uses a very reduced set of drivers - just the bare basics to get the essential parts to work (screen, keyboard, mouse, NIC....) in a very basic way - that is why things look different in Safe Mode.

Your graphics card may have a problem, that is why it is running hot, or the problem may be the result of a bad connection. Either of these issues could result in the problems you describe.

It is almost certain that this is a hardware issue and unfortunately it is unlikely that you will be able to repair this without some technical hands-on help. Notebooks are notoriously difficult to repair because everything is crammed into a very small space, it is therefore usually necessary to take the Notebook to a repair facility that knows what they are doing.

Let us know how you progress

Hello...

At around 7pm i noticed that i was having issues. I have wireless. My wireless connection icon was perfectly fine and connected with great strength, however when i clicked on firefox to go to my homepage, it said page not found. it did the same with internet explorer.

I restarted my computer and tried again...same thing.

Then, i booted my computer in safe mode with networking...my internet is perfect and works fine.

What the heck is going on???

I have Nod 32 Smart security 4 running and do spyware and adaware scans regularly. I have a firewall up too.

I checked device manager to make sure nothing is wrong and there were no problems.

I tried connecting to the internet directly by using my dsl cable in regular mode...still same problem.

please help me. i have so much homework due and i cant afford to loose my internet.

i am running windows vista home premium on a HP dv6812nr laptop.

A:Internet Only Works in Safe Mode?

Recently I've seen a rash of problems caused by internet security apps. Typically this involves programs that manage antivirus, antispyware, and a firewall all in one program.

The "test" for this is to remove the internet security app and see if you can connect. Make sure to have an alternative antivirus available so that you don't become infected while testing.

I have no experience with the NOD32 Smart Security program, so this is all speculation on my part.

So I noticed that I had some weird process running in task manager, and I ran a few scans. After removing the viruses that were found by Spybot, SuperAntiSpyware, and Malewarebytes Anti-Malware, I was required to reboot to finish the removal process. When I rebooted, I couldn't type in my password to log in. I restarted into safe mode and my keyboard worked fine. I've tried uninstalling the drivers and letting the drivers be installed by themselves, but the driver manager says the driver couldn't load because another instance is still running in memory. I also tried installing the drivers from the CD that came with the keyboard, but the same problem occurred. I even tried installing the most current driver off the Logitech website, but still the same problem. There are still some weird files running in my processes, but the scans say my computer is clean. When I tried running GMER, it became unresponsive and I had to restart my computer. I'm still trying to get the scan to work, but I am currently in safe mode. And I just remembered that every time I open Firefox, a tab opens with a random ad site.DDS (Ver_10-03-17.01) - NTFSx86 NETWORK Run by Josh Steinpreis at 2:26:36.28 on Sun 08/29/2010Internet Explorer: 8.0.6001.18702Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.2045.1689 [GMT -7:00]============== Running Processes ===============C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunchsvchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.ex... Advent laptop
Vista Home Premium 32bit
1.5G ram

Problem:
Normal Mode with wireless on - after 5-10 seconds, entire desktop flickers, turns black briefly, then dumped back to logon screen.
This happens continually.
Normal Mode with wireless off - about 20 minutes, same effect as above, then dumped back to logon screen.
Neither of the above causes reboot, bsod or OS crash, just a 'flip out' then back to logon screen. Anything opened, i.e apps, browser gets shut during this process.
Safe Mode - completely stable, wireless/internet on or off.
Driving me nuts, safe mode isnt exactly the best mode to use the laptop in and totally unusable in normal mode.
Any ideas ?
Thanks in advance

Boot in safe mode and set up a clean boot. Then see if it works. If it does we can get you up and running by using the clean boot instructions.

This is not actually an IE specific question. I have tested on Firefox and Chrome and have the same problem.

I am using IE 11 at the moment and am trying to connect to fuelbuyer.dtn.com. I am able to pull this page up and enter the user/pass. At this point the page attempts to load and eventually tells me Page cannot be displayed.

I am able to access the site via another computer sharing the same internet connection. I am also able to access it from this computer if I enter into safe mode. This computer is running Windows 7 Pro SP 1.

I have Avast Free Antivirus installed. I have tried turning disabling all shields with no change.
I do not have any other firewall enabled and have not installed any other firewalls or antivirus.
I have disabled all Add-On's with no change.
I have disabled all start up programs with no change.

The website previously worked on this computer. I am not sure what has changed or when it stopped working.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

In IE, Put the site in your "Trusted Sites".

It may not be compatible with Windows 7. Try right clicking on the Jack the Ripper Shortcut.exe file select properties/compatibility select Windows XP SP2 or SP3 then click on OK.

YEsterday afternoon i contracted Antivirus soft, which happened to me once about a year ago as well. After following the removal instructions from this bulletin board on it, i could not reaccess the internet unfortunately. I keep getting the "cannot renew IP address" error when i try to repair my wireless connection. tried connecting with an ethernet cable to my router but still no success in getting connected to the network. took it to the geek squad and they confirmed that i don't have any viruses or malware, but seem to now be missing a windows file for the browsing. they were able to connect wirelessly in safe mode, but not with a regular startup. How should i go about fixing this?

I run Windows XP Media Center SP3 on a Dell laptop.

your help is greatly appreciated-

evan

You might check to see if your malware set up a proxy server on your system.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-remo...alware-tutorial, See Error 732 When Trying to Update....Uuuhh...GeekSquad didn't happen to say exactly which file is supposed to be missing that allows connection from safe mode, but prevents connection from normal mode?Louis

After several problems with trojans and virusses my computer is completely clean now. Ad Aware and AVG can not find any strange object anymore. However at this moment my networkconnectivity won't work anymore in normal mode. Only in Safe Mode it works well.
I ran winsock.exe and after rebooting the networkconnectivity was on again... only for a little moment. Then Internet and e-mail freezes all over and I am back at zero. Could anybody help me please? I really don't know what to do anymore. Is this a problem of Service pack 2?

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

What version of IE are you using?

I would recommend download IE 9 from here. (Remember to save the .exe to your desktop!) Then reinstall IE 9 though the downloaded .exe

A:Inernet only works in safe mode!!!!! Plz help!!! :(

Hi,

If your internet works properly in safe mode. Than it might be a problem with some of the addons in your IE browser. First disable all the addons and enable one by one to identify which one creates the problem. To do these follow the steps:

1. Open your Internet Explorer window.

2. Click on Tools > Manage Add-ons.

3.Click on Toolbar and Extension in the left pane of the window. This will show you all the add-ons that are installed on your I.E. browser.

4. Click on disable by selecting each add-ons.(Disable buttons will be found above the close button and below the window pan.)

Note: You call also open IE in safe mode without disabling any one by running this command in run command [start + run (R-key)] type "iexplorer -extoff" (without quotes)

Hope this helps.

I am taking a wild guess here but there is some Programs being loaded that are troubling your Connections to the Internet. Try Downloading Adaware, Spybot. Hijack this would be a great tool for you and Us to find out what is running on your PC. As well go to start-->run-->msconfig. Go to the Startup Tab and find out if there is something in there that is starting up that is not supposed to be there

My computer now only works in safe mode. If I boot it up regularly it freezes up after a couple minutes and the when I try and shut it down it is stuck on the shutdown screen until I manually shut it down with the power button. I have run all updates and deleted unnecessary drivers and programs. I have McAfee installed on my computer. I have tried a system restore but it didnt work. Anything involving a reboot does not work. It has been like this for a month now with no luck in fixing it.

Im running windows Vista 32bit version with SP2 installed.

Problem occured after i accidently clicked on a link in skype. Since after a reboot internet access, Network shows local only.

I tried safe mode and internet works fine. So updated Nod32 AV, Malwarebytes AntiSpyware, and Spybot Search & Destroy. (Updated these in safe mode)
Rebooted the PC, did full system scans on them all. Nod32 - clean, malwarebytes - few threats, spybot - few threats also, and all removed, rebooted PC again, no change. So i disabled all starup items and non microsoft services from msconfig. Rebooted and still no internet. I have no system restore points, as i've found the spyware must of disabled it.

The IP address i get is 169.254.157.195(preferred) no gateway, DNS fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1. Thou in safe mode it gets the normal ip address, 192.168 etc.

Something must be blocking it if its working fine in safe mode, i just cant find it, anyhelp be appreciated.

A:Internet only works in safe mode

Solved: It was Nod32, somehow even with it turned off or disabled on startup, it still was blocking the network. I made a new profile and it let access thru the network.
