Downloaded pdf files are undeletable

Q: Downloaded pdf files are undeletable

Let me explain my problem, maybe it has to do with my windows xp or whatever.

When I download from a certain site a pdf file, that file is saved in my computer as an udeletable file. A nod32 scan of the file returns a number of either 2 or three files scanned while I only scan one! Malwarebytes detects only 1 file and both detect as clean.

It happens with both Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer!

If I save the file under a different name after opening it with Acrobat 8.1 the file becomes "normal" i.e. deletable

If I copy paste to another computer the file behaves again normally. Downloading from the same site on other computers of my network I have no problem whatsoever

Are the windows corrupted?
Did I do something in the Browser?

I thank you in advance and I appreciate your help apriori

Can you tell me what the site is that you are having problems with and I can see what happens for me.

Good day, ladies and gents
I'm not sure this is a Win7 problem but that's what I'm running so I'll try here.
I have a couple of files that have shown up on my system which I am unable to delete, erase or rename.  I have tried MBAM, Spybot, Emsisoft, File Assassin, Super Anti-spyware, MRT and TakeOwnership with no results.
These files are named -
"=_UTF-8_B_UmHMiGltLkpQRw==_="  without quotation marks.
I run Win7 and IE11.  When I try to delete, etc., I get the following msg in a popup - "Could not find this item"
These are not big files, about 200 to 400 k, and they don't seem to be affecting anything but it's annoying.  Does anyone out there have any ideas?
Thanks, S.

1) For the past three days, 6 files apparently created by a virus appear in my Music folder:

examples: _DVDFab_228patched.exe
_WINRAR_3.41_FinalCrack.exe etc...

they are all 312 KB large and are not visible when viewed from the main computer ( even with system files visible under Folder Options ).

They can be removed either in safe mode or remotely by opening the Music file from a second computer on my home network. But they reappear or are recreated with every boot.

SpyBot 1.3, Ad-Aware, PC-Cillin, Panda, Spysweeper and several others I've tried DO NOT DETECT THEM!!

2) Also, AOL's Spyware Dectection keeps finding a file it identifies as
"Spyanytime PC Spy". None of the other programs find this. It is apparently able to block and delete the file, but then it reappears right away. It is detected every time the program is run no matter how many times I delete it.
This is the log from AOL's program:

Then there is another program called Web Thunder that when I try to remove it it states that I need permission to do this. From the C: drive, under prgram files is "Thunder Network", when I try to delete it I get this message:

I've also tried to delete them by using commands but it tells me "Access denied" screenshot below.

I can't delete them no matter what I do. If you have any suggestions / ideas feel free to share.

I am running Vista Ultimate 32 bit. I have a folder on my desktop named Downloads that I use for, shockingly, downloads. Anyway, there are a couple of files in the folder that are, apparently, not really there. They are like ghost files. They used to exist but now they are still visible but not recognized by any program. Also, they have a size of 0 kb!

I'd like to get rid of them but they refuse to be deleted. When I try to delete them, I get this:

So I figured that I'd delete the whole folder........or not:

Any ideas are or will be greatly appreciated...............

Hey guys i'm in sort of a problem, i think my AVG has been infected and when i try to delete the folder or files inside it doesn't let me and first says-
"Renaming, moving or deleting AVG may cause some programs to not work. Are you sure you want to do this??"

i click yes, it pops up again, then it goes

"destination folder access denied"

then asks me if i want to continue operations? i click continue and it attempts to delete but fails to as the "Renaming, moving or deleting AVG may cause some programs to not work. I also tried the Command prompt option to deleting them, but even that cant find the files.

Hi everyone.

I have Windows 7 HP with 2 user accounts. 1 admin and other under the "users" group. I have a folder on the HD that I don't want the any "user" to access except admin. What I have done is set the folder attributes to hidden and system protected (attrib +s +h). Now the folder is not visible until a user enables viewing of protected operating system files in folder options. But he/she can search Google and still find out how to enable viewing of all hidden files including system protected folders/files. So this isn't a foolproof method. So I started encrypting the files and now they appear in green color and are not accessible in other user accounts.

But I'm afraid if the user somehow finds and deletes them. How can I make those files undeletable?

Recently I reformatted my drive and reinstalled windows (XP, home). I backed up documents & settings with Windows backup and successfully recovered documents on the new setup. I also tried to recover a few non-document files from Docs & settings, in particular my email inbox (Thunderbird) and desktop files. When I first tried this the recovered non-document files were unreadable and undeletable (although moveable), with supposed sizes of 0 bytes. I got around this by unclciking the "use catalogs on the media" tab in backup, which then permits the option of not restoring security settings on the files.

However... I still have the originally restored files and folders, and they seem to be impossible to delete. There are no options I can change in "properties" that make a difference, and I have tried two separate 3rd party programs that claim to be able to delete any file on reboot. They claim to have deleted the files, but they are still there!!! How the ?€%&# to I get rid of these things? I have even tried changing my login name to the one I had in the original setup, without success (it was different on the second setup because I initially chose that name for the computer name).

They are probably being used by your computer. If you check the date and time of the files, they are probably between the time that you turned on the computer and your current time. Reboot the computer and they may be gone or you can delete them. I would not worry about it.

I have 2 files in my temp folder (c: Documents and Settings, administrator or other users, local settings, temp) that cannot be deleted. When you delete these files they immediately renew themselves from the internet (if you look at the properties of the temp file you can see that it updated and restored itself at the same time you delete it). The first indication I had on the immediately of these files came from IE Privacy keeper program indicating that it could not delete these files. The program (IE Privacy keeper) is instructed to empty all temporary internet files after the last IE window is closed (all other temp files delete as instructed after session is over). Has anyone experienced ~DF8E71.tmp or JET6F52.tmp files in their temp folder??? What are they??? Is there a program that you can use that will indicate what program a selected file operates with? Apparently these files are running in a program that monitors and protects their existence. I want to be able to identify the program, its intent and delete it if necessary. Thanks

These files and folders can't be deleted, moved or renamed. When trying to do so I get this error;

I don't want to format the drive either as I have more data on it than I have free space on my computer so can't back it up. So far I have tried command prompt and unlocker with no success. I also had a search on here but couldn't find a solution.

A:External HDD filled with undeletable files

You have some serious hard drive errors. You'll be lucky to salvage the data you already have. You'll be lucky to be able to format. Your hard drive might be on it's way to permanent failure.

Try to take the salvageable data off first, then start running either chkdsk and fine and fix file system errors. But get the data off first. Fixing the drive works the drive and if it's going to fail, the fixing process will actually make it fail faster.

For openers, let's run spybot and adaware [gotten from links below]. After that I also suggest running Hijack This[link below] then follow the below instructions fully, and post the log in this thread, whereupon it'll be analysed by those-in-the-know here and then appropriate fixes will be suggested..

follow the next instructions on posting the Hijack This log here;

It’s very important that you save the log to its own permanent folder on your hard drive, such as Program Files/Hijack This, or My Documents/Hijack This, (NOT a temporary files folder) or you may loose the ability to undo any changes you make, so that it can create proper back-ups and be able to restore them if necessary.

Close all open windows/and any open web browers and open Hijack This. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to “Save Log”. Click on “Save Log” and then save it to NotePad. Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into the thread.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET;- Await further analysis here.

I recently acquired some weird files that are creating problems in Windows XP Professional.

I cannot run DISK CLEANUP on the hard drive. This will cause the computer to freeze. CPU usage will go to 100% and I have to reboot. Everything else appears to run normally but I am not prepared to do without DISK CLEANUP.

I managed to narrow down the problem to about six strange files with very long names:

Type=Click&FlightID=1998469&adID=2004646&TargetID=2001874&SegmentsID=4,13,15( a long series of numbers).htm

They are located in 3 folders which are found:

C:\Documents and Settings\[Administrator name]\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\

They were all apparently created within ten minutes of one another a few days ago.

I have run my virus program and it finds no viruses on my system. BUT, the virus program will crash when it tries to scan the folders where the weird files are contained. I was able to selectively scan every other folder on my computer and no viruses were found.

The files CANNOT BE DELETED. If you try to delete the files themselves nothing happens. If you try to delete any of the folders in which the weird files are contained, you get the error message:

i have 3 or 4 folder which are giving me an error message saying something about me not having permission. ive tried taking ownership and giving myself full permissions but i stll cant delete them.

A:deleting undeletable folders/files.

Can you list them here? Once you take ownership of a file or folder you also have to right click on the properties to make sure the "read only" box remains unchecked too. That will prevent deletiing them if that remains checked off.

Some files and folders under "C:\users\user name" become unavailable to change if any are found there. In that circumstance you might actually have to delete the entire admin or user account in order to remove them. Windows has them locked up as reserved.

Hi all!

I got a problem with double entries which I found out while selecting a new background. I want to learn how I can remove double entries in picture location list.

Also an error message appears when I select either

In addition to double entries on picture background list, I have one more problem with undeletable files in recycle bin. I don't know where they come from but I get a warning message whenever I want to clear them

This should take care of the picture entry duplicates -

Greetings I am new to this forum and in dire need of help. My PC normally runs at 15% to 30% when using everyday programs I have a undeletable file folder on my desktop that appeared when I try to delete the folder my PC spikes at 100% and remains there until I restart it. I have tried to delete the folder using the the regular windows method and also in safe mode and I can not delete it, it will just loop and say deleting 0 of 0. Also my PC is constantly running at 57% when idle, and explorer.exe is hogging a lot of CPU usage at 48% constantly. While lookig through files on my system I came across 2 strange files "bootstat".dat and "bthservsdp.dat" both files have a CD icon and in properties it states that they are both CD/video/movie files. I was able to delete "bootstat.dat" but I am unable to delete "bthservsdp.dat" it states that I do not have permission even though I am in admin mode. This issue is severely slowing my PC down, any help is greatly appreciated. Below you will find a list of logs from the utilities that you requested be done before posting and a few of the the utilities logs that I have used.

My first post here. Looks like an excellent resource.

I am using my flatmate's computer after my motherboard/CPU were on their last legs according to the computer shop.

My flatmate runs XP and his son has partitioned the HD into 3 drives.
C is FAT32 4 gigs. D is NTFS or whatever 27Gigs, and E is FAT32 27 Gigs.

I am using the E: drive.
Was working fine and I had downloaded Opera and installed other software with no problems about 2 weeks ago.

I had my old HDDs (14Gigs of stuff) dumped to CD by the pooter shop but they did them as WinRAR files and included the WinRAR program on the final disk - 6 in all done as Part 1 - Part 6.

When I tried to unpack them onto this new computer, started to have problems. My system was Win98. Tech guy at shop said that's ok.

Part of the files were fine, the others were coming up as rogue files with symbol spattered file names. The pooter shop guy said they soiunded like they were corrupt and he would reburn my data. Due to be done by today.

Meanwhile, the Gigs had been eaten up bigtime and gone from 20 gigs free to 9.5 Gigs free (I work with image, video and sound).

The system had no Anti-Virus stuff on it.

Can't remove the visible rogue files.
XP says it can't read from the source file or disk.
Or "cannot delete the file named ...whatever .... cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and file name.

The drive doesn't seem to have as much stuff on it as it is repo... Read more

Hey all,

I just deleted a user, and I want to totally get rid of it. When given the option to keep or delete the files, I said delete. However, when I go to C:\users\ the folder is still there, and it cannot be deleted. The icon shows a little lock.

As an aside, I am trying to delete the first account I created upon install - but that doesn't seem like it should matter.

A:Deleted user but files remain -- undeletable

Does the account that you are operating from have admin rights? Some things require a higher level of admin rights than what are given simply by assigning admin rights in User Accounts, so you might have better luck if you enable the built-in administrator account and try it from there.

You might also try using "Takeownership" on the files and folders that you want to delete.

I transferred the 'program files' folder from my XP computer to my vista laptop's desktop. I moved all the files to their new homes and then went to delete the folder, but it says I don't have permission.

I have added special permission to my user account, but still can not delete. I have tried deleting from command prompt, while also disabling explorer in task manager. I have enabled the hidden administrator account and still couldn't remove the folder in question.

I have assigned ownership of the folder to my user account, but still no success. I have tried several move on boot type programs, with no success and tried various other things in command prompt.

I noticed my laptop going a bit slow recently, and I figured something was wrong.
I'm running windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2.  Windows is up to date according to windows updater.
I have Eset Nod32 Antivirus 4 which starts up automatically.
I also occastionally run Malwarebytes, which hasn't found anything.
I tried to empty my windows/temp folder, and could not delete 3 files:
I did some searching on these forums and elsewhere, and saw recommendations for others with some of those files to try a scan with SuperAntiSpyware
I ran a complete scan in safe mode, which came up with a few things:
I removed those, and a second scan shows up all clean.
However, I am still unable to delete those temp files outside of safe mode.
If I delete them on safe mode, they're back on the next system restart.
When I look at task manager, I see a lot of disk activity.  It does stop sometimes, but it's still a bit concerning.  I was hoping someone could help me diagnose what's going on here.
I appreciate any help you are able to offer,

I have a couple of things going on with my Delta 14 running Windows XP. First, I occasionally have a dialogue box pop up indicating that I cannot access a page because I am offline...when I have not actually attempted to connect to the Internet, or frequently just after I log out of the 'Net.

Second, my Google results and some other search results are being hijacked to This started happening as soon as yylsdjgr.dll showed up on my computer.

I've located three dll files that I think may be responsible for the problems (one being yylsdjgr.dll, the others being bbkabbk.dll and ijlsdhah.dll), but all efforts to delete manually; using Hijack This!; using KillBox; using safe mode with Windows Explorer turned off; using Unlocker; etc. meet with "Access Denied" results.

Hey, first post on this site, sorry it's to ask for help!

Been having this page pop up when i'm using Firefox every now and then for some time now. I ran a scan with PCCillin 2006 and i have a file "C:\WINDOWS\system32\winmfu32.dll" which is detected as a virus "TROJ_SMALL.DPP". The scan action always fails on this file. I'm a bit apprehensive about deleting the file, i tried moving it to the recycle bin but i get the good old "Cannot Delete, file in use..." error.

The other problem I am having is that every time i boot windows I get an installer program which opens, runs to an almost full progress bar then closes, waits a few seconds then does it again. I'm not sure if it's a virus or not but it is slowing down my windows start up something chronic. I can't open Task Manager quick enough to see what the process is called, mainly because is seems to suck so much system resources that by the time it opens it's already finished.

I've got two questions,
1) I've been trying to do remote computer shutdowns, but I keep getting access denied errors. I've used computer management, shutdown.exe and also runas and then shutdown. Nothing seems to work, anybody get remote shutdowns to work using XP's software (instead of downloading 3rd party stuff).

2) I installed Cygwin and its openssh server and I couldn't get it to work so I uninstalled Cygwin, but I was left with this an sshd.log file in C:\var\log\ and I can't delete it. I've tried removing it's attributes using attrib and deleting it in safe mode, however nothing seems to work. I'd rather not install Linux and Knoppix no longer comes with writable NTFS support. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi Guys,
I was directed here after some preliminary troubleshooting.  I started looking for a possible infection after I noticed my laptop running a bit slowly, and then I noticed three temp files which could not be deleted. Those files are located in the C:\windows\temp folder:
gnserv.dat - 1kb
hlktmp - 8209 kb
spserv.dat 1kb
So far I have run:
SuperAntiSpyware, full scan in safe mode:
ADW Cleaner:
I attached a text file with all the logs from those programs called scans.txt
I was then directed to run DDS and start a new post here.

Hello folks,
Glad you are here. A computer amateur but able to follow instructions, I hope.
I read the 'read this before posting' so will attach a bunch of logs that don't mean much to me.
First though, why I am posting and would value help very much:
-some months ago, Avast! which runs all the time, picked up a major attack, noisy alarms and red flashing warnings of attach, but I don't think it stopped all the incoming 'stuff'. I simply turned the PC off, but on restarting, odd things have happened since.
-IE7 has never been well since - many menu options are missing, and I cannot even de-install and reinstall it, as it is not allowed by add/remove programmes. I cannot delete temp files either.
-I started using Safari some weeks ago, but now the PC runs terribly slowly, almost all the time, when online (fine when offline that the lord). Webkit2webprocess.exe is running at near 100% all the time so everything takes an age, even typing is one slow character at a time until I close browsers.
-ran Spybot (also installed and running) and unusually it found no temp files (usually it tells me 200 or so are there and the scan will run faster if deleted, so I accept its offer to delete them).
-I ran a search for .tmp files and found 2500+ temp files! but, they resist deleting manually
-running Disc Clean Up in System Tools, its finds ZERO space occupied by temp files so they are somehow hidden
-I degfragged c:\ and it helped speed a little.

Hi Gang,

My operating system is Window 2000.

Last Friday my laptop was infected with UnSpyPC, a Quicklink toolbar and 6 large icons.

Thanks to HiJackThis and Spyware removal programs etc I think I have gotten rid of the problematic crap. However now I seem to have ended up with a few corrupt Folders/Files.

Whenever I try to run a Norton Antivirus scan or any number of Spyware removal programs such as Spybot, Spysweeper, Ewido, Ad-Aware etc they all get stuck or crash on one particular general data Folder. Explorer.exe also crashes and generally freezes the whole system when trying to access or search this folder.

These are some of the things I have tried to remove this folder(most were done in safe mode):

1. Defragged the disk and run Disk Scan and repair.
2. Dos commands such as del *.* & RMDIR /S.
3. Deleting the parent folder
4. Copying the original backup of this folder to overwrite it
5. Renaming etc & moving
6. KillBox
7. Dr Delete
8. Delimvfile (also tried short names etc)
9. Have checked all system files using Win 2K Installation disk.
10. Checked no permissions are preventing access

And numerous other suggestions I found on this forum and elsewhere on the web. Nothing has worked!!!!

So basically I can't use any scans or searches etc as this rouge folder causes everything to crash when access is attempted.

I have avoided re-installing the system given my laptop is over 4 years old and I would have to install so many updates and software it would... Read more

I've gotten an infection today, and although I was able to remove most of it (crypts.dll, reader_s were two of the files, along with a whole mess of random filename dlls and tmps) by just going in to safe mode and deleting those new files and regeditting the appropriate entries. Runscanner helped a lot with that. I sorted by modified date and compared to a machine next to me (and just use good judgment) . I also had to reenable task manager, folder options and regedit. Just trying to give a little background in case it's useful. On to the problems!

1) Some programs won't open (HJT runs, runscanner runs, Ccleaner runs, malware bytes won't install, spyware won't install, tried running combofix but it wouldn't run either. Firefox will open but I'm hesitant to open it for very long (I'm typing this on the second PC). That is my first problem. I don't know if changing the file names on spybot will help or not, but I didn't try.

2) IExplore.exe keeps opening at random intervals. I can kill the process, but it's obviously running on its own.

3) userinit.exe is a different filesize and has a new modified date (119kb and right when the infection happened). I checked it vs the second PC to notice the problem but I'm very hesitant to start messing with system files so I came to you guys to hopefully get some advice.

Hi, If Spybot's Teatimer is running,it should be disabled for most of these scans. I suspect a TDSS infecton at work here. Some types of malware will disable Malwarebytes (MBAM) and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it. Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run..***Another work around is by not using the mouse to install it, Just use the arrow keys, tab, and enter keys.If you cannot use the Internet, you will need access to another computer that has a connection. From there save mbam-setup.exe to a flash, usb, jump drive or CD. Now transfer it to the infected machine, then install and run the program. If you cannot transfer to or install on the infected machine, try running the setup (installation) file directly from the flash drive or CD by double-clicking on mbam-setup.exe so it will install on the hard drive.Manually Downloading Updates: Manually download them from HERE and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Hi there! I have Windows 7, not Vista, I need to change it in the profile.

So Today Avast! noticed that I have some folders in which originally I had multimedia files but now these files turned to be thousands of crazy files and folders such as

*?╢zB?VI. i`

From windows I can not delete them, can not rename them, but easily can move them in the same drive. If I want to delete or rename them: file name does not exist or too long.

Unfortunately, the same is true when trying to delete in DOS (rmdir s/ q/). The response is file does not exist or wrong path.

Hello, Please help me. I have Windows 2000 Professional. I'm pretty new to all this as I have only had a computer for about a week. I got some adware threats detected by Norton Antivirus 2004 and have done a lot of reading up and I am now tring to delete them.

One of the removal instructions provided by Norton promps me to delete a file in C:\Winnt\Downloaded Program Files but when I go to view this folder it looks like there are no files inside. Now, I know there are files in there as Norton Antivirus has picked up one in there and when I view the proporties for that folder it states there are 12 files inside but when I view the folder with Windows Explorer it appears empty!

I've gone into folder option and changed the settings so it shows hidden files and hidden system files yet this still doesn't let me view the files in this folder. How can I delete this file if I am unable to view it?

If anyone can point me to a turorial that explains this or explain it to me I would really appreciate this.

Please help a n00b.

Cheers, Luke.

A:Unable to view files in C:\Winnt\Downloaded Program Files

I'm assuming you have done this to Show hidden files and folders:
Go to Control Panel/Folder Options/View and select "Show hidden files and folders"

Also, place a check in "Display the contents of system folders"
And,uncheck "Hide protected operating system files(Recommended)"

If the above doesn't work try this:
Create the REG_DWORD ShowSuperHidden (if it doesn't already exist) Set the value to 1, click OK, and close the Registry editor

I have OS XP(3), IE8, Office 2010

I am trying to d/l a pptx file from our organizational website (that I use regularly). The file is shown as a pptx file (as displayed by the properties feature), but when I click to d/l it, it shows up as a zip file to be opened and the computer tries to unzip it, but doesn't do a very good job in doing so.

I have tried to d/l other pptx files from other internet sites and they work (d/l) OK.

I have the same OS on another laptop and it d/ls this particular file from this particular site just fine.

I can change (rename) the extension on this file (from zip to pptx) and it works fine

I have tried everything reccomended on various PPT forums and it hasn't worked.

The file association is Microsoft PowerPoint.

The file d/ls perfectly with Firefox.

What is it about the configuration of XP/IE8 that lets this happen?

The issue here is that this particular file has been posted to the website for members of our organization to d/l and use. Many of these members are not savvy enough to be able to 'manipulate' the file and use it as it was designed. I am tryng to make this d/l as user friendly as is possible.

I just did a clean install of Win 8 Release Preview, 64 bit. I moved my profile from C: (SSD) to d: (HDD) using a recommendation I found in the forum. I did not move the program data. I wanted to download and install some programs, but when I do, I can't get them to run. They are setup .exe programs. In IE if I click to open, nothing happens. I clicked on View Downloads in IE and it opens a Window with the downloads and if I try to open one a list is shown that asks how do you want to open this file and a list of programs like IE, Notepad, Paint, etc.

I've pre-ordered Win 8 to install when it is shipped.

Recently - I've been having a strange problem. when I download a photo or image, or even capture a screen shot and save it to a folder, I cannot see it in that folder. I originally thought i had not hit save properly or not saved a file that I thought I had - but when i tried to re download an image or capture it again and name it the same thing - I got a message saying there was already a file by that name in the folder.

I have tried ensuring all hidden files are shown, and refreshed the window to no avail. but when i restart the computer, I am able to see the files in the folder as the should have been displayed all along. also confusing - when i look in the folder after saving...say if I've saved 12 images into the folder from the net or screen capture, but the folder is only displaying 1 image - it was say the folder only contains one image...

how can i fix this so i do not need to reboot every time i want to see newly created images?

Have you tried doing a System Restore to fix the problem?

I just downgraded from Vista SP2 to Vista SP1 and by doing so, have somehow screwed up my downloads in both Firefox and IE8. Whenever I download in either one, the download results in a file that is 0 kb.

The strange thing is, Google Chrome somehow wasn't affected by this downgrade (if that's what caused this) and I can download files fine in that browser.

Hello, I have an HP laptop running Vista Home Premium 64-bit. It's actually been relatively fine for me until the last few days. I was having some problems editing video files and couldn't figure out why, so I updated to service pack 2. Around the same time, although I honestly cannot be sure that it was because of the update, none of my downloads will work. I believe it happened once or twice before I updated my sp but now I can't download ANYTHING. It's bizarre. The entire file will download and the file will show download progress just like normal. But, once complete the file shows up as 0 kb and doesn't open. I've tried using firefox 3.5.3 and IE 8...both do the same thing. I have also checked my permissions and made sure that I am allowed access to all of the folders that the documents are saved in. Nothing seems to help.

I really don't want to have to format/reinstall windows since I have quite a bit of stuff I would need to backup. Any help would be EXTREMELY appreciated. Thanks.

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and despite having tried lots of suggestions and followed tutorials posted on this site, I cannot unzip downloaded files - these being simple documents or spreadsheets. The zipped folder is displayed and I can choose settings to extract all files but once i browse to the extracted folder it is empty. There are no error messages. I see in my file associations that .zip is not there but have already used the tutorials to restore and re-associate the zip files with the built in utility. The only associations are for .zfsendtotarget and .zipenx. A month or so ago, I got so annoyed with this I installed Winzip but this didn't work either!

Hello, my name is Ryan and I'm having a problem with added UFO extencions to my downloaded files. I've recently put an email on a microsoft community support site, so here it is...

After downloading a specific type of file from online,
I am unable to access it in any way. This seems to happen
with files that are saved as the .UFO type. For example,
I've recently tried downloading AOL instant messenger,
which saved as Install_AIM.exe.ufo, but after double
clicking on the file, and trying to explore its contents I
am unable to open it in any way. Many other files I've
downloaded also cannot be opened. I have a windows XP home
edition, and I have netscape 7.0 as an internet provider.
Any help would be welcome. Thanks.

Hello Ryan,

It appears that some application is adding the .ufo extencion to your
downloaded files. This may be due to using some type of download manager or
even possibly some other 3rd party application running in the background,
you might want to check the settings in Netscape to see if the cause might
be with the browser. You might want to try the download using Internet
Explorer, if this is successfull then you might want to contact Netscape
support for assistance. Your example of the AOL (Install_AIM.exe.ufo)
download you might try to remove the .ufo from the file name and then
double-click the file to see it it will run.

From time to time, my CPU rises to 100% and pretty much lags me out from doing anything.

- I have all the latest drivers installed.

- sometimes, the CPU is fine, and when im done downloading a song or a .zip file, the files end up being corrupted or the song ends up skipping because it wasnt downloaded correctly.

- videos on youtube tend to load very slowly at times, and its not just from the server ive tested the same videos with my laptop and all runs smooth.

I was wondering is this because of my Video card or possibly my Power supply ? im not to sure whats causing the problem. And I dont see any certain program pop out as being overworked. Firefox is being used the most at around 50% and Ive only got Winamp/ZA Firewall and Firefox open with all this lag still.

- All of my drivers are currently updated from Windows update

Heres my system specs, any recommendations or probable upgrades I should do to my Pc/ Or help is greatly appreciated

CPU: Intel Pent 4 3.06GHZ, 3065 Mhz, 1 Core (2 Logical processors)
Memory: 2 GIGS of DDR2 RAM
VIDEO: Geforce 9500 GT
Power Supply: 300 Watts
I remember before installing Windows 7, windows 7 advisor said theres probably going to be problems running Windows Aero with my Graphics card.

A:100% CPU / Downloaded files corrupted /

No, your graphics card should be working perfectly well with Aero. I highly doubt it has anything to do with power supply.

I'm beta testing ZoneAlarm Extreme myself and have found it to be excellent. They just put a new version which you might want to get and install. You can upgrade without removing the old one.

Here is a link to that:

But what you should really do is use the backup feature found within ZoneAlarm so it saves to your documents folder.

Then completely uninstall ZoneAlarm from your system. You can restore your settings from the backup easily when you want to reinstall.

Point is, get that off your system and then tell us how things are.

We have similar CPU and you use all the same apps as me. Nice.

Another recomendation, although it's unlikely will fix anything, is to visit NVidia's site and install the driver for your graphics card from there. WU drivers...well....are WU drivers...even though they are from the manufacturer too.

Here is the graphics driver you should be using:

And very good luck to you!

A:Finding downloaded files

Aren`t they going to your downloads folder, set it up so all your downloads will go there, it`s the default location in Windows 7, unless you`ve changed it.

In Chrome it`s in Settings/Advanced Settings/Downloads

Set it to download files to the downloads folder. You can always move them someplace else later.

and once I clicked "restart the program" the desktop apps would disappear and reappear and the "Windows Explorer has stopped working" error would keep repeating itself over and over again.

After finally getting rid of the problem after a couple Norton Full Scans and system restores, I downloaded an .avi file on the desktop and the error came up again. I caught a glimpse of the file before the desktop restarted itself and saw that the picture wasn't on the video file like all my other videos are. After I struggled to delete it, the problem was gone. So I thought that file was corrupt.

Only problem is that every file does that same thing. Like, I used a torrent to download a movie and the folder had several files in it, but the icon folde... Read more

A:All downloaded files are corrupted.......I think

Download and run Malwarebytes, after install check for any updates and run a full scan. When that is completed let us know the results and also run sfc /scannow a system file checker.

I've googled for threads on this, but no fixes. I have seen some threads on this forum regarding this as well, one where the blame is mainly put on AVG Antivirus (even though one poster reports it happening on a machine with "NO Firewall, NO AV, NO UAC, Reset IE7 OR Newly installed Firefox (downloaded via another PC), One original User ADMIN account all running in Genuine Vista Ulitmate X86, SP1 and fully updated"), and another in which using Chrome is proposed.

What I'd really like to know is why my files disappear upon download completion.

It happens in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari, but for some reason not in Chrome. I'm not switching to Chrome, so it's quite annoying having to switch between browsers to download a file. -And I guess I'm quite thankful I had Chrome installed before this happened.

I don't run a firewall other than my router's own, I have Avast Antivirus Home installed, and I've had it for several years without any problems. Disabling it doesn't change anything. I've done a full virus scan with no result, but I've never had virus issues anyway. UAC is turned off. Download location has no effect on the issue.

WHAT is going on? Anybody?

Whenever i download a file such as .msi installer, .exe executable, or .zip archive with IE and run it, it crashes (not IE but the file that was downloaded.) This recently started happening on my Home Premium 64-bit Vista installation, and the problem remains after reinstalling Vista two times from scratch. If the file was downloaded on another PC and saved to a flash drive, it runs fine on Vista. I have tried the sfc /scannow command, as well as disabling any firewall, antivirus, etc. and changing the IE settings. This occurs on a clean installation of Windows Vista also. Here is the crash report, for example this time I was trying to install the FireFox installer after downloading it with IE:

help with this issue would be GREATLY appreciated as it has been plaguing me for months!

A:Please help - Downloaded files are corrupted

I know and understand the problems you're having as I too have had the same issues. I'm running vista business 64bit connected via wifi to a belkin router, and when I download files (zip, rar, exe etc) they would all be corrupt. However I noticed this problem would come out of the blue and then vanish without explanation. After trying countless things to resolve the issue I made what I think may be a discovery:

Last night in an attempt to resolve the issue I disconected from my own home network and connected to my neightbours instead, and all of a sudden the problem was gone. When I reconnected to my own network the problem returned.

Now for the strange part, I have a vista 32bit laptop which is connected directly to the same belkin router via ethernet cable and it never has experienced this problem, however if I have something downloading directly onto the laptop, then at the same time start downloading something on my 64bit vista workstation via wifi, the problem disappears. In other words if my 64bit downloads without using my full 8mb bandwidth the problem goes away. So now I am getting past the problem by forcing my vista 64bit workstation to download alot slower than my bandwidth allows.

I have no earthly idea why this is happening, but in my case at least it would appear that the problem is localised to the network, or router or modem. As I stated when I connect to my neighbours 2mb wifi network the problem 100% stops!

If anyone can shed any further light on this is... Read more

I would run chkdsk to make sure you don't have any errors on your drive. Go to Start, Run, and type cmd. In the command prompt window, type...

chkdsk C: /F /R

It should ask you if you want to scan on the next reboot. Type Y for yes and then reboot. Try not to interrupt the process.

I am having problems opening downloaded files from my email only. I don't know why. I use Windows Vista, Firefox and the email server provided at my university.

Basically what happens is this (I've included screen shots where helpful):

I get an email with an attachment and I click download to download it.

Then a window pops up saying that it has no idea what type of file this is but will save it anyway.

I look on my desktop where the file has been saved, and the icon is just a blank sheet of paper.

I double click the icon to open the file and it tells me that it doesn't know what file type this is, so I have to choose a program to open it. I choose the file type that I know this particular file is (in this instance, a spreadsheet file) and it fails to open.

Now, it fails to open for several reasons. Sometimes I'm told it's corrupted, sometimes it's the wrong file type, sometimes it needs to be converted, sometimes it's being used by another program. None of this is ever true. If we go back to the first picture, it's CLEARLY a spreadsheet file and should open in spreadsheet, no? So then why doesn't it do this?!

This happens with Word files all the time for me. I have probably 3 different versions of Word on my computer and all of them fail to open Word files downloaded from my email.

So, what's going on? Is this a problem with Vista, Firefox, or my email server? And how can I fix this?

A:Cannot Open Downloaded Files

Is that the actual filename?

You cannot have slahes in a file name. Also, the file extension = .sheet

Have the file resent or rename it with .xlsx file ext.

Hi everyone!

I am tryng CIS free on a useless netbook (where sometimes I try sw without messing up with my primary PCs).

when I start the browser (FF) in CIS sandbox and I download files, then I can access them only in FF download manager (the arrow on the top right). I can't find them in my download folder, I can't find them in shared space.
Could you tell me where I am wrong? where should i find them? because I want to use them out of the sandbox (they remain in the sandbox)

I mean I d like to do like in SBIE .

Maybe I set the security option wrongly

Looking forward to hearing from you

thank you in advance
