Mozilla Profile Folder is Empty

Q: Mozilla Profile Folder is Empty

Hi,

Long story short, I got a virus last week and received terrific help from CatByte. The link to that thread is below. Everything went well and my computer was running better than it had in years. CatByte suggested I do some further cleanup and maintenance to help keep me from getting another virus. I ran TFC cleaner and after that I couldn't open Firefox. I get the message that Firefox is still running and to close it before trying to open it again. There are no Firefox processes running. I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox to no avail. When I did some investigating as to what the problem could be, I read that the profile lock could be the cause and when I went to find the profiles I discovered that the Mozilla profile folder is empty. I think the profiles are somewhere but they aren't in that folder. Any help in getting my Firefox up and running again would be most appreciated. Here's the link to the previous thread:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/f100...us-488911.html

Thank you!

Linda

Don't use Registry Cleaners! See if yours is reversible or try a system restore if you have a restore point between fixing the problem and using the cleaner. If not, you can build a new profile without "hunting" for the old which is probably easier.

I woke up this morning and started up my computer. When I opened up mozilla and began to surf a bit, a random command prompt window pops up, runs some dialog and then closes just as quickly as it began. The window keeps closing faster than I can read what it is doing but I was able to see that it said something along the lines of "mozilla/roaming profile" i think.....What is going on? I have good virus protection...at least I thought I did. This issue hasn't caused any problems, YET. Please HELP ME, before it DOES!

**Also, after reading the forum prep...I tried running the DDS software like it says...but kept getting a notification popup that says, "DDS is not meant to run in 'Compatibility Mode' this program will now exit." As far as I know, I never set my preferences to run EVERY program in 'Compatibility Mode'. Just a few specific ones. I checked the 'Advanced Settings' in 'Compatibility Mode Troubleshooting', but the 'DDS' program doesn't come up in the list of affected programs...I am a bit stumped at this point.**

Hello All,
Here's my problem. I've erased my profile from Mozilla Firefox. I HAVE NOT however erased the profile files.

I have since created a profile with a different name. I would like to import the old profile info (bookmarks inparticular) to my new "default" profile.

As well, what if I wanted to import info from another Mozilla Firefox profile?

Can this be done?

I've tried everything but I can't seem to figure it out.

If you do post please be advised that I am not all that familiar with Firefox.

Thank you all for your time.

A:Solved: Mozilla Firefox...Erased Profile but not files...trying to import to new profile

I move mine manually all the time. If you just want to add the bookmarks.html, just move the one you saved to the new profile. Here is the official instructions from Firefox on backup and restore of the Profile.

That is not an error, that only tells that have not setup OneDrive on your PC, therefore nothing is synced yet. This tutorial shows you how to select content to be synced to your OneDrive folder: OneDrive Selective Sync - Choose Folders in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

The OneDrive folder will then only show the synced content. To manage content not synced to local machine you need to use a browser, or install the OneDrive app from Windows Store:

Calling on all Bleepin' XP-erts!!! I need some help here, although there's no sense of urgency, it's only a superficial problem--at least I think it is. Dell Laptop Win XP Home SP 3 During the course of normal system maintenance--cleaning up files, folders, progs & such I came across a folder in C:\Program files\ microsoft frontpage (I thought it odd that it was listed in lower-case) A check of it's properties showed it empty but for 2 sub-folders--also empty. I don't recall ever having "frontpage" installed, never heard of it in fact. The two sub-folders are "version3.0" and "bin" Long story short, after un-ticking the "read-only" box & applying it to all folders contained I tried to delete the frontpage folder. It would not delete because (bin) is being used by another person or program. Close any programs ...etc...and try again.I tried renaming the "bin" folder & deleting, tried dragging it to another directory and deleting it from there...no dice. All this was done while keeping the "properties" dialog boxes open for all 3 folders (click "apply" & NOT OK or close). There are some other folders also named "bin" in C:\ Prog Files directory, 1 used by Java, another by ????. My computer was hit a malware. I was able to clean/quarantine the malware, but my startup folder is empty.

From the Windows logo start, I am able to see the folders in "All Programs". But all the folders are empty. These startup folders are also empty when I navigate to their locations in Window Explorer.

My programs are still installed and I can start them from their installed locations. How do I rebuild the startup folder?
Thanks

P.S. The "AppData" and the "ProgramData" folders are visible. I'd rather not create shortcuts to all my installed programs one at a time

I am trying to rename a user profile under C:\Users (I am logged into the Administrator profile on my computer), and am getting an error that the folder or file is in use, so I cannot rename it.

I have tried multiple options to fix it after researching online:
I tried ending the "explorer.exe" process, and then restarting it via "new task" in task manager. It was suggested that this would "unlock" the file or folder for a short period of time. It did not work for me.
I tried clearing both my recycle bin and my "Thumbnails" folders from Disk Cleanup. That also did not work for me.
I was going to try to disable thumbnail caching temporarily by following instructions online, but the computer was unable to locate "gpedit.msc".
Could anyone advise? This is a very important step of a process I'm being worked with on in a separate thread and I cannot proceed until I have renamed this file, and am afraid to restart the computer since I've just done a "takeown" command on this Administrator profile.

Hi there,

I´ve got a problem with my XP machine that didn´t match anything before what I could find.

When I log in as XXXXX (standard username), Windows creates a new user profile where I can´t get access to my data.

Data does exist but it is not combined with this "new" account". I hope you can understand what I mean....

Is there a way to repair my old user profile?

Same happened to my Administrator account. When I log in as Administrator I´m not able to open the directory of the standard user so m not able to rename it or something else.

I hope you can help me...

With best regards,

Thomas

I have a folder that I created on my computer that only held pictures [no program files or anything]. I tried to access it to find it corrupt: "The File or Directory is Corrupt and unreadable." So, I tried to delete the file to find "Cannot delete 'filename', the directory is not empty."
I have tried rebooting the system, it didn't help.
I CAN rename it, but still can't delete it.
I can move it to different locations on my computer, but not to a flashdrive.
If possible, I want to avoid downloading any force delete programs.
Help?

A:Cannot delete empty folder, folder is corrupt- help?

Several possibilities I can think of.

HD errors. Run chkdsk and see if that fixes it.

Could be malware.

Boot to Safe Mode in order to get the "Security" tab under the folder's "Properities" and take ownership of the folder, and "replace owner on sub-containers and objects".

Then UN-click "Inherit from Parent permissions...etc..." under the "Permissions" tab, hit "apply" and exit to Normal XP mode.

You should be able to delete the folder if it is not corrupt.

If all this fails, install Unlocker and use that to delete the folder, on boot if necessary.

Report results.

When I open Mozilla via local icons, it will read and load a specific profile. This allows me to use 3.6.13 (..\firefox.exe" -p "FF_3_6_13" -no-remote) and 4.0b9pre (..\firefox.exe" -p "Minefield64" -no-remote) without one interfering with the other. (4.0b9pre is set as default).

When the browser opens via an e-mail or web page hyperlink the profile file is ignored. I can live with it but sometimes I need an add-on I use and it is not running.

Is there a setting I can use to have Mozilla read the profile when opening it from a hyperlink?

A:Mozilla ignores profile when opened via email/web hyperlink

Check your profiles.ini in Notepad it should look somewhat like this:

[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1

[Profile0] <--- FF 3.6 profile
Name=New1112
IsRelative=1
Path=Profiles/j39iqzek.New1112
Default=1

[Profile1] <--- FF4 Profile
Name=FF4
IsRelative=1
Path=Profiles/dgu37doz.FF4
Default=1

Make sure the Default= is present in EACH Block and of course have it point to the profile Block you want to use for those email links

now we have deployed a brand new windows server 2012 R2 forest.
so we must disjoin client computers from previous domain and join them to this new domain.
when users of this new domain login to their computers, new profile folder is created for them (e.g. c:\users\u1.newdomain.lab, but this folder definitely doesn't contain their previous profile folder contents (desktop, documents, App data....)
what is the best solution to migrate user profiles from each previous user to related new user without any problem ?
i tried copying the entire profile folder of each user & replace it on the profile folder new user, but some problem arises, when this new user tries to login using this replaced profile folder.
i am not sure is it right forum to ask user profile related question?

Hi,

I got hit by... Rogue.FakeHDD & Rootkit.Dropper .... after being on Chat with Dell for hours I decided to reinstall my OS (Windows 7 Pro).. That went fine but I hooked up my external hard drive & when I click on Computer it shows in the Hard Disk Drives (2) and shows my Local Disk (C:) drive with a little data in there (just installed) & I have my External (F:) drive. The External (F:) shows "2.57 GB free of 74.5 GB" with the bar almost full... But when I click on the drive is says "This folder is empty". It was connected when I got hit... I scanned the drive with Trend Micro Security Agent and no problem. Any ideas where these files are???

THANK YOU!

A:This folder is empty

Fake AV programs always make victims think that the apocalypse of computers just hit them. One of the things that many of these programs do is set most of the file attributes on a PC to "hidden" so that the end-user believes they have, or will, lose all there data. It is quite clever and I have had several clients who have entered credit card info for that very reason. I'm glad you haven't done that. All you need to find is a CMD script that changes all the file attributes on the computer back to default. I can't give you the one I use because it is proprietary but that is what you need and all will be well again. Maybe another member knows of one?

A:Folder is empty

Are you actually looking at the folder that contains the photos? Or are you getting a report from some software or wizard? Maybe you are using an operating system I’m not familiar with, but usually when you look in an empty folder there isn’t a message as it is obvious there is nothing there.

Windows Explorer is the much better choice for file transfers, but if you are more comfortable with My Computer (or Computer in Vista) it will do. Find the drive that is the camera (I presume F). Click on it to find the folders. I think Sony stores the actual photos in the DCIM folder. If you click on the folder and it is empty try the other folders. If they are all empty the wizard or software is telling the truth. If there are JPG files – Edit > Select All. Right click on a highlighted image file and “Copy”. Right click in My Pictures or wherever you want them and “Paste”.

Hey all. I just reinstalled windows 7(32bit) and my windows.old file, which doesn't contain anything in it except for empty folders, still has size to it. Does anyone know what the deal is with this? Never had this happen to me.

The show hidden files/folders option is ticked and still shows nothing. Is this a glitch?

Never had that either! I would try un-hiding the operating system files (for now) and also taking ownership of the Users folder inside windows.old replacing the ownership of all the contents too.

In the past couple of days I have had some strange issues with a few applications, which eventually led me to a problem with printers and Print Spooler service. When I check under Settings then Printers, it's basically an empty folder. I then check Control Panel - Hardware & Sound - Devices & Printers, it hangs (with the mouse pointer in a little blue circular motion). I then check Services and restart Printer Spooler service, it "temporarily" fixes the problem, i.e. all the printers will then be properly displayed under Devices & Printers. However, the Printers folder remains empty. When I said "temporary", the fix lasts seconds. As soon as I close all the windows and screens, and try the same thing again, it recurs. Not sure if it's a problem with Print Spooler or something interfering with it, so any suggestion would be appreciated.

Hi. Not sure how to explain this. All my old cache used to be stored in the 'Temporary Internet Files\low\Content.IE5' folder that's hidden, however nowadays when I look the four folders in 'Content.IE5' are simply unused. Everything I view in the browser (flv video clips, images, etc) save in 'Temporary Internet Files' only. As I say I know for sure they used to save in the 'Content.IE5' folders so I was wondering if anybody knows why they no longer are? I don't use IE all that often but this is something I've just realised and don't have an answer for. I've tried searching for it online but all I get is accessing the hidden Content folder for files. I'm using Admin (always), in case anybody should mention that.

Oh, and this is for Internet Explorer 8, and Windows x64 (SP 2).

------

Sorry guys, ignore this - I was confused and added the 'low' part on. Without it it's showing up all the files. I didn't even realise there were two different versions of it. How come?

Whenever I open the "My Computer" folder it opens empty. No Drives are visible. The "My Computer" start menu icon is also gone. I can navigate to "My Computer" through Windows Explorer or using the Windows Key + E shortcut. I am at a loss as to what to do. I'm sure it is something simple that I am overlooking. Any help would be appreciated.

Ok I'm not sure how long my windows folder (in local disk drive C:\ )has been empty because I never use it/open it. But now I need to because 1. I cannot install my automatic updates for windows XP (i have 18 to install, and it always says it fails) 2. I remember long ago i used to have lots of stuff in that folder (system32 and everything else that used to be there) I have no idea where it went. (I have been having some infections and "viruses" but I'm in the process of cleaning that up) When I try to open it this message pops up

C:\windows is not assessable
The request cannot be preformed because of an I/O device error

Anywho where did all my stuff go?
How can I find system32 folder? (which is NOT in WINDOWS folder, well its completely empty)
How can i get it back? (and install my 18 updates)
And WHY and HOW did it become empty???

Additional Details

In my local disk C:\ I have 11 folders named after numbers and letters, and in each of this folders there MORE folders with 4 digit number titles and other random stuff/icons. It used to never be there, then as weeks past more folders would just keep popping up? Does this have anything to do with my empty C:\WINDOWS folder???

Just to add I don't have a CD-Rom drive in my laptop...I have a ASUS notebook. Just in case some one says i have to reinstall/uninstall windows OS with a CD or something.

A:C:\WINDOWS folder is EMPTY?? Why?? Help?!

Hi,
I'm not sure about the I/O device error, but it may be that the folder is continuously in use by one of the viruses you mentioned. It won't be 'gone' as shown by the fact that you booted into Windows.

Here's 2 things you could try:
1: Go into safe mode and/or use a USB Flash Drive or USB Optical Drive and run DOS or Linux and check or backup your Windows folder. (phew, too many or's - probably stemmed from my extensive use of them when programming)
2: Use the free Unlocker program. Some Antivirus programs may give a false positive on it but it's also hosted by Cnet and other high profile sites.

I cut/pasted a folder containing movies from my C drive to my D drive and to my surprise the folder on my D drive is empty! I tried looking for it in my C drive but it was not their either. This has been happening for quite some time now. It doesn't happen for files, only for folders. I have a HP laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit with a Core i3 processor, NVidia Gfx card, 4 GB RAM and 320 GB HDD. Please help.

A:Cut/Pasted folder is empty

Welcome to Seven Forums rajtilak. Are you indeed CUT and pasting? This will result in the files being deleted from the original source. If you COPY and paste, the files will still remain on the originating source, and (normally) be pasted on the new destination. There was sufficient space on the D drive for the folder? A Guy

Then I found out that the "start" button wasn't working. I restarted my pc to see if that would fix it and it did but a lot of my icons were gone again. the 'desktop'folder in explorer is empty and the folder in 'users' is now empty too. Can anyone help me? The lost icons appear to be random and the ones that still show up are not listed in the desktop folder.

Whenever I startup my computer and open File Explorer, I am greeted by an empty screen that says This Folder is Empty. Then the progress bar begins to fill up, and the PC is fine after a couple of minutes. I tried the sfc/ scannow command and it found corrupted files that it could not fix. I even used a windows backup image and the problem started again. Then, I had CCleaner clean my registry.

Has anyone else had this problem? Also, is there any chance that upgrading to windows 10 will solve this problem?

I reduced our Resolution to default, enlarged the area of the Mange add ons frame and nothing works or lasts.

I even created a new patch file, the Manage addd on show for an hour or so and then they are gone again.

Any thoughts.

Do you by any chance use any registry cleaner, tune up program and anything of the sort.

If so, that is the favourite suspect

If it were me I would
1. Establish a system restore point and if it is verified as established
2. Go IE Tools - Internet Options - Advanced tab - reset Internet explorer.

Hi everyone, I really need help on this so I will try to include as much detail so you guys don't get confused at what I'm talking about.

Heres what happened:

1) I was clearing up space on my hard drive and deleting stuff that I don't need.

2) I came across C:\Windows.old\windows folder and saw that it was about 13 gigabytes - and seeing that it's from windows.old, I deleted the windows folder contained there.

3) After deleting C:\Windows.old\windows , I find out that my C:\Windows.old\users folder is empty, how is this possible?

Is there any way to locate my files, I KNOW that they are still there - but there must be some strange bug or something idk, cause all I deleted was the "windows" folder and suddenly my users folder becomes empty. Help is greatly appreciated!

The manage add-ons folder is empty. There are a variety of ways to get to that folder and I have tried them all. There is nothing in it. No toolbars, no search providers, and no Accelerators. It doesn't even contain the InPrivate filtering link.
What's more the navigation Pane is also empty.

It's odd because the most common add-ons that shoud be accessable there seem to work OK. Adobe Flash, Java ..etc. Everything is updated.
PC: Windows 7 x64, IE8,
Any one know what is happening with this?

A:The manage add-ons folder is empty

It might help to mention what program you're talking about. I'm assuming you're speaking of Firefox, but then again I could be wrong. If you are speaking of Firefox, you should know that you won't see anything in your add-ons folder until you've actually installed add-ons.

If you've already installed add-ons and Firefox still isn't showing them in the list, then you may have a corrupt installtion. In that case, reinstall Firefox after using a program like Revo Uninstaller to completely uninstall the first instance.

I have a tough one!! a couple of days back a user in my company discovered his (My Documents, Desktop, favorites.... etc) folders are all empty. I went under the C:\Documents and Settings\UserName and surprisingly everything was there but for some reason they were not showing when he opened (My Document) or any other folder directly.

Anyway, I moved the (My Documents) and (Desktop) from under the user profile folder and placed them in the (My Documents) folder and on the (Desktop) everything was fine. Today, he called me again saying everything has dissapeared again! This time nothing is on the (Desktop) or (My Documents) neither under the (UserName) Folder. I tried searching and showing hidden files but nothing is there!! the (internet Favorites) though are showing since I didn't move them that day.

What could have possibly caused that and where is everything gone? I can say for sure they are not deleted and I need a solution that will not need me to use a data recovering software coz this is out of our company policy.
Can anyone help? Appreciate Much

I recently did a backup of a data partition to an external drive using Windows drag and drop. It took several attempts because not all the files and folders would transfer completely. When I was finished, I did a file by file check to be sure everything was copied and also deleted several items I no longer needed.Buried deep in my Steam folder ~ an online gaming platform ~ I noticed a folder named CookedPC that was empty. This was the last folder in a series of subfolders that were ALL empty and showing 0kb in size. I tried to delete it, but it kept saying access denied and that the folder was NOT empty. I've tried renaming it, moving it, changing the extension, deleting it in Safe mode and even used Unlocker. NOTHING will remove this folder. Unlocker claimed the file was deleted, but it still existed and returned a system tray popup saying the file was corrupt. I did manage to remove all the other folders between Steam and CookedPC by moving CookedPC to the Steam folder.MalwareBytes, SpyBot, MS Security Essentials, Ad-Aware, CCleaner, all show no infections. Is there a way to permanently remove this folder?Thank you,- Dean -

In some of my projects, some of the above folders may be empty but they should be there in order make harmony in the layout. Now I have added a column "size" but it doesn't show the size of the folder.

Hi

My friends have a Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo L and there were problems with it (including the printers folder being empty) They could print from Word, but not from Outlook Express. So they were copying and pasting to print e-mails. I suggested a new hard drive (to avoid losing data) and a fresh windows install. After doing this, and connecting the original drive as a slave, there are less problems, but 1 remains, the printers folder is empty and I can not install the printer.

When I connect the printer windows reports: "Cannot install this hardware There was a problem installing this hardware: HP LaserJet 1020 An error occurred during installation of the device The specified module could not be found" The Add a Printer icon does not open the add a printer wizzard.

What I have tried:
New printer drivers from HP site
New chipset drivers from Fujitsu Siemens site
Tried installing network printers through Windows Network Nothing happend
Enabled "automatically search for network folders and printers" in folder options - still do not have any printers

I have also tried connecting another printer (same model) to the usb port and got the same error, yet it works on the computer it is connected to.

Please can you offer any suggestions. The computer specification follows:
Celeron 2.6 Ghz
XP Home SP2
256 mb RAM

Best regards,

Murray

I tried this by pressing F12 and then choosing the CD drive and then pressing "R" nothing seems to work. Right now I have reinstalled XP on D drive and it works but I do not have all the data from the first installation.
Can I

2. repair my original problem and log into my first installed XP. If i wasnt clear in my post please tell me so I can clarify. Awaiting your reply. Richard

Saving the data and deleting the partition is probably the better solution.

The second installation of Windows XP should be recognize the other partition and give you access to it. (The drive letters may be switched)

You should see two drives in My Computer.

If I try to delete it, there is a pause for a couple of seconds and then I get the message: Cannot delete FolderName, it is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again. If I uncheck it so it's white and click Apply and then OK, when I reopen Properties, it is green again. I tried to turn off Simple File Sharing. It didn't change anything for me. I downloaded a recommended utility called PurgeIE/Delete Invalid File and used it to try to delete the folder. It also failed. I also have rebooted the computer a few times and that has no effect either.Incidentally, the folder did have some mp3 files inside originally, which I was able to cut from it and paste into a different folder (not on desktop). Hope this isn't a tough one to solve. Any help would be very appreciated. Thank you.

Have you tried deleting the "file" from C:\Users\J***\Desktop ? Go to the desktop folder in Windows Explorer and see if you can delete the icon file that way. If not, try Move On Boot (http://emcosoftware.com/move-on-boot)

Hi. Not sure where to post this.
I have noticed an empty History folder on my C drive that every time I delete it, it comes back when I reboot my computer. I don't ever remember seeing it there before. I have Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64 Bit. I recently downloaded and installed the Comodo Ice Dragon browser, but have since uninstalled it as it seemed suspicious to me.
I have run various malware and virus scans and it shows nothing. Any clues?

I have removed the current infection of that 'security virus' but have found that my system folder is empty! Ergo, I am unable to install firewall, antivirus, etc., and of course, downloads to troubleshoot will not run (the dialog box prompts to select a program to run the app....). How to restore the system folder is the question(?).
Thanks, Bob

Hi, I hope this is in the right place.

If I click on Recent Places on the left hand menu of windows explorer (File Explorer) the folder is always empty.

Can anyone please shed some light on this? It's doing my head in.

ETA - When I right click on taskbar and go to properties, both items are already checked under the Jump Lists tab.

Thanks much in advance.

A:Recent Places Folder Empty

Right click on the taskbar and look at properties.

I booted up my computer this morning, and it appears as if, unbidden, my folder icon changed to something more... flat. See my attached screenshot to see what I mean.

I can't seem to figure out by what logic this change was made, and an hour of searching through Google came up fruitless.

I tried changing the icons manually (via properties > customize > change icon) but to no avail; they remained flat.

Any help is appreciated.

A:Empty folder icons changed

Weird things happen like this as well (see attachments). If I select the folder in Explorer, it shows the correct icon, and then I deselect it, and it goes back to the strange icon.

Hi -- I'm hoping someone can help me. I've searched and found others who have had the same problem but no one has posted a working fix for it.

I had a virus last week that hid all the icons on my desktop, in my Start menu, and in my C: drive. I successfully removed the virus and was able to restore the icons to my desktop, C: drive, and main Start Menu, but I still have a problem. When I click "All Programs," my program folders appear, but they're all empty. The programs are still installed, but for some reason they aren't showing up when I click the folder in Start>All Programs. I can't do a system restore -- the virus deleted my restore points as well. Is there any way I can rebuild my Start menu without having to do a complete reinstall? I tried creating a new user profile, but the issue exists in the new profile as well.

I can run the programs if I type in the exact .exe file in the search bar at the bottom of my Start menu (for example, iexplore.exe), but if I just type the name of the program, Search doesn't find it. When I click Start>All Programs, it looks normal at first, but if I click on a folder (like Microsoft Office), it just says (empty) beneath the folder name. Any suggestions? I really don't want to do a complete restore

I have a folder which appeared in my music library. The title is in what appears to be Russian characters. I deleted the two items that were in it without a problem. But when I try to delete the empty folder it locks up and gives me a DrWatson error message. I've gone into properties and unchecked the read only box. But as soon as I close it and reopen properties the box is re-checked and won't allow me to get rid of the empty folder.

Any advice as to the problem and a solution would be greatly appreciated!

After boot-up I noticed several problems. I got a warning that I could not make changes in ATI systems settings, there were no quick start icons on the task bar (left side) and I was not connected to my wireless net.

I ignored the ATI warning and opened my Network Connections in Control Panel. The folder was empty. I checked Device Manager and Network Adapter was OK.

I also noticed that Drag and Drop was inoperative and I could not open image files.

The most recent software setup was Opera 9.1 yesterday, so I went to Add/Remove Programs, selected Opera, selected remove and got the warning: “Windows Installer Service could not be accessed…”

I re-booted and got my laptop for internet access and searched the problem online.

The re-boot changed nothing. My search uncovered several possible remedies some of which I tried. I did not edit the registry.

AVG had been active. I ran CCleaner, AdAwareSE and SpyBot S&D, All found a few items that I removed. I re-booted and still had the same problems.

I tried a Safe Restart and my user’s icon and the Administrator icon was visible. I clicked on the Admin. and, if it called for a password (I don’t recall), I entered “blank”. I was still not able to create a new account. I repeated the Safe Restart and used my account, still no joy.

Hi,

I recently installed an OEM Windows 8.1 as a dual-boot with Windows 7 from an installation DVD using this guide:

Dual Boot Installation - Windows 8 and Windows 7 or Vista

Everything is working perfectly, no problems at all. However, I noticed a Windows.old folder that appears to be empty. Is this just part of the setup? Can I safely delete it from within Explorer, without any adverse effects on the installation?

Thanks,
Golden

My niece called complaining that she couldn't boot her computer. She was getting an error message saying that C:\windows\system32\config\system was missing or corrupt. She was able to get a prompt and I think she was able to boot to safe mode. I did a search and found where someone suggested running chkdsk/r. She did and then was able to boot to windows.

Now she tells me she can't get online and when she goes to control panel/network connections the folder is empty so she can't adjust her settings - there are none. I had a similar problem over the summer and ended up paying someone to fix it. They wouldn't give me a straight answer what was wrong with mine ( probably so if it happens again I have to pay again ) so I don't know what to tell my niece except that I feel her pain which isn't helping at all.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

A:empty network connections folder

Log on as administrator then click start, right click on my network places and click on properties. It should show any network connections that have been created and their status.

If you double click on any network connection, you will see a local area connection status screen, click on support tab and select repair button.

If none of this helps, or is not there. go to start/control panel/performance and maintenance/system/hardware/device manager. Scroll down to network adaptors and right click on network card and uninstall.

Reboot and Windows should recognize hardware card, reinstall drivers and then you can rebuild network connections. You should make sure you have all of the info, user name, password, etc. from your ISP before doing this.

I've got a bit of a problem.

I have Windows XP Professional. I had to reinstall my copy of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Well, the folder all the Data for the game goes into would clear, so I manually deleted about 6 files in it. Everything in the folder disappeared after that. Didn't bother me, I wanted it gone anyway. Well, I go to delete the entire folder directory, and I get the infamous "Cannot delete File: Folder not empty" gig.

So, first things first. Use unlocker: Says nothing is locking it. Okay, no big deal.

Try safe mode. No dice there either.

Starting to get desperate, try killing explorer and manually deleting through command prompt.

Nada.

I try to set permissions, take ownership, and while that happens, I get a working message that shows Windows trying taking ownership of files that are supposedly in that folder, but I can't see them. I have show all files turned on, but they are still not there.

To make the whole thing decidedly insane, I can move and change the name of the folder. It is now on my desktop, mocking me. And for some God-forsaken reason, it is still "Read-only". If only fixing it were as easy as unchecking that box, but we all know it is still read-only as soon as you exit it.

I'm on my last legs here, guys. Someone just give me some ideas as to what the holy hell this could be, and I will worship the ground upon which you tread. Please, I'm going nuts here.

I just created an image of my new SSD using Windows 7 64 bit. I looked to see how large the file was compared to my older HDD images. But when I hover the cursor over the WindowsImageBackup folder name in Windows Explorer it says "Folder Empty". Right clicking & looking at Properties shows zero bytes.

What could I have done wrong?

I have a folder that has been troublesome lately. View Hidden Files, Don't Hide Anything, Etc Etc yield no files in it, yet it exhibits the following behavior:
If I put a file (like make a new.txt file in it) in it, I can delete it to the recycle bin, emptying the recycle bin yields a 'Cannot remove folder ******: The directory is not empty' (changes with each try)
Restoring the folder after emptying the recycle bin returns the folder, but it no longer has the file in it (new.txt has been deleted).
deleting the folder when it does not have any files in it yields a 'Cannot delete ******: The directory is not empty'
Shift-Deleteing the folder yields the same error (regardless of having a file or not) and deletes any files in it if it had any.
I can move the folder, regardless of it having a file in it or not.
a Cygwin console ls -a or a cmd dir yields three items:
.
..
.
I understand directories shouldn't have a file named .
nothing I have tried (Cygwin rm -r, a Ruby script File.delete, a cmd and command del, and all related rmdir, rds, Dir.delete, etc) can delete it, usually giving a 'directory is not empty' or 'access denied/in use' error.
the issue appeared after having unzipped a sourceforge project release: gccg-source-0.8.92.27 using 7zip. I unzipped it into a directory using its filename.

I haven't had the chance to try: Knoppix or a Dos Boot Disk.
The filesystem is FAT32.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
