Q: Windows 8 Dell Computer

My mother has a new dell computer windows 8 bought a month ago. It has given her trouble from day one but now is becomming unbearable to use. Simple tasks like browsing the web will hang or crash. Desktop based programs become unresponsive routinely. The computer has some serious memory issues that occur from the second it is booted up fresh. I cannot even open task manager because the comp has no free memory. Metro interface seems to function properly even when the desktop was just having so much trouble. I have no idea how i can solve this problem because i cannot even get the computer to open simple troubleshooting programs like task manager to try and diagnose. I am at my wits end and just about to the point where I am going to install W7 over her computer bc it never gave me so much trouble. I am sure this has something to do with W8 or drivers memory leaks. I just dont understand how it is performing so poorly essentially running on default manufacturers settings and drivers. I know for certain this is not how W8 is supposed to run. Please help me fix this. Dell XPS 15 Win8.

It could have been something she installed or even a virus.

If your just going to install Windows 7 anyways make sure the laptop has drivers from Dell.

Don't forget to also back up her data!

I have a two year old Dell PC with Windows 7. I got a virus in my computer that by phone and computer takeover Norton located in my MBR. When they cleaned it my computer will no longer boot up. Norton worked with me for three days on the problem but we were unable to fix the computer. I followed other web sites and repaired my MBR but it still will not boot up. I tried System Repair, Check point, Image, and Dell system restore and all failed. I have tried to use the Windows install CD and all I get is a black screen with a flashing cursor and then after 3 minutes the compute attempts to boot again and fails. I tried everything to try and wipe the drive from C prompt and it will not let me. I have very weak computer skills but I can follow directions and I have wiped a previous computer I owned. (I confirmed that my CD drive is working) I also should mention I have a second hard drive on my computer that I backed everything up to.

See if you can reset the BIOS hardware/software connections and then clear the CMOS to access your Windows 7 install disc.
Resetting hardware/software connections in the BIOS and clearing temporary memory of corruption:Shut down and turn off the computer.
Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).
"Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station, disconnect
cables to printers or devices such as external monitors, USB memory sticks or SD cards, headset or external speakers, mouse or auxiliary keyboard, turn off WIFI and Bluetooth wireless devices." (Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues HP Pavilion dv5000 Notebook PC series - HP Customer Care (United States - English))
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This closes the circuit and ensures all
power from components is drained to clear the software connections between the BIOS
and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
(If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall. Do not reconnect any unnecessary peripherals; monitor, keyboard,
and mouse should suffice and be the only peripherals reconnected.
Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware

Clear the CMOS:Use your system manual to find instructions for accessing the BIOS...
In the BIOS, go to the EXIT screen...

I had to reinstall Windows XP on a Dell computer. The owner of the computer didn't have the original reinstallation disk so I used a Dell reinstallation disk that I have used to install Windows on many other Dell and HP computers in the past without a problem. This time it installed but seems to skip past the part near the end where it asks for all users names and the part where it checks for connectivity. That itself may not be a problem. However when I boot into the desktop I can't get onto the internet. I went into network connections and don't find any local area connection or net adapter.I don't know what to do at this point. Any suggestions would be great!

I have an old dell i want to put my music harddrive into. I was able to log into windows then it froze up and now I am getting a program software error after it tries loading windows. I have tried F8 and last known config and safe mode neither work. I need a windows xp boot cd/recovery cd. My service tag is FLXSB21. Please help.

The only thing that I can suggest at this time would be to call Dell & try to obtain a reinstall CD. It's been a few years back, they furnished me one free of charge for an old Latitude D610 that I purchased & needed to reinstall the OS on later due to massive file issues.

There is no way to legit download XP, you'll need reinstall CD.

Hopefully the folks at Dell can assist with this.

Can I install Windows XP on my dell computer? I mean the regular one that you'd buy in a box at the store. I seem to be having more trouble than it's worth using the Dell Operating System CD to reinstall it. I'm trying to delete the current windows on the hard drive and do a fresh install like I posted before, but it says it can't because it needs the files already installed to make the new install. So what I'm saying is, can I dump the dell disk and just use the real one? I have a feeling that would fix it.

Hi! A friend of mine had her hard drive crash. It was windows xp & her disk was broken so she asked me to help her out. I cloned my windows xp planning on putting in her key that she still has for xp. The problem is it runs fine on my dell computer, but when I load the hard drive into her HP it comes up and says did not load properly and that I need to make a choice. Safe mode, safe mode w/without networking, last known good configuration, start normally. Have tired all & nothing works & it just goes right back to the beginning & starts all over again. When I bring it home though and put it on my dell runs fine. Can anyone help me out?????

A:Windows xp works on dell computer but not HP

G'Day,
I might be corrected on this advice, but here goes..........

I am of the opinion that Dell and Hp Compaq have their own 'versions' of Windows that are pre-installed on their machines.
Having said that...I would venture to add that your Dell copy will not operate on a Hp machine and vice versa, simply because of the bloody - mindedness of each of those two companies.

You might have to get your friend to contact Hp directly to see what sort of solution that they can come up with.

First of all I know that a dell is not the best Computer and i don't want responses saying: "Don't get a dell" or "Get a life dell user". My computer is freezing every 5 seconds it seems. I have removed a ton of programs i don't use, Scanned for viruses and Malware, and installed 2gb's more memory. I have a dell computer with Windows 7 64bit. I have managed to take a screenshot of my resource monitor when it freezes.

The image is posted as an Attachment because i havn't made 5 posts yet and cant insert an image.

PS. My computer froze 6 times just writing this post.

By the way it doesn't freeze all the time. It will have episodes of freezing all the time usually when i am playing a game. But this game is only using 2/6 of my memory but is using 100% of my CPU.

EDIT: Oh, I have also Defragmented my disk.

A:Windows 7 Dell computer freezing a lot

Go here and do the memory and hard drive tests, then attach any minidumps you may have. If they exceed the size limit, zip them. What is the Dell's make and model?

I'm not the smartest person when it comes to computers so forgive me if I'm not clear with my question. When I try to start up my computer it gives this message: Primary hard disk drive 1 not found/Secondary hard disk drive 1 not found/ WARNING: Dell's Disk MonitoringSystem has detected that drive 0 on the primary EIDE controller is operating outside of normal specifications. Hi!

I have a Windows XP Home CD I got from dell with my laptop (almost 2 years ago). Well I uninstalled it from my laptop and started using Windows XP Professional right away, and haven't touched the XP home since. One of my friends is having me build a computer for her on a budget, and if I get another license, it'll throw her over the budget. So I have one question: Will I be able to install the XP Home I got with my dell onto the computer with any activation problems? I know I shouldn't, but just to be on the safe side, I thought I'd ask...

A:Installing Dell Windows XP Home on another computer

Welcome to Techspot

Do everybody a favour and install Windows 2000 Pro, if you have that lying around.
No activation problems, and (in my opinion) much more stable than XP.
Install W2K/SP4, update IE to version 6/SP1, then do a full windows-update.
Now take an image of that install, using Drive Image or Acronis TrueImage.
Then install whatever else.

Wow. After using this new Dell business computer (Vostro 270) for 2 weeks, to suddenly have that message appear in the lower-right corner was awful. Running a check utility from Microsoft brought me to a page that said to pay up $149. I called Dell and they said oh, we've seen this with some Microsoft updates -- be careful with those. So I used a System Restore point, and got rid of that Windows 7 Not Genuine message. (I ran complete system scans with Microsoft's System Essentials and Malwarebytes, and no virus was found.) I've used Windows since release 3.1 (pre-Windows 95), and have always scoffed at the Mac fans. No longer. I am a programmer by profession. The integration of this system with my XP computers was a nightmare. File permissions has been a nightmare. And now this. For business purposes I still need a few Windows machines, but for everything else I'm switching to Mac. This machine has wasted so much of my time to set up. Bitter? You bet. A:Dell Business Computer -- Windows 7 Not Genuine I'm totally agree with you Mrwsf, i bought an loptop with window 7 Pro like 7/8 months ago. I bought cause it's not costly as much Mac is but$600 on this window 7 it was waste i guess cause now i am having so many problem you can't even think about it. Good thing is i still have my Mac Pro.

A:old dell computer running Windows XP some what slow

Typically slowness can be down to accumulated "junk" files, temp files, seriously fragmented drive...; cookies, an extensive history...Have you run the windows disk cleanup utility?Try that for a start. Then perhaps run a couple of cleaner utils...Suggest run in this order:Adwcleaner - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...malwarebyter - https://www.malwarebytes.org/free/ccleaner - http://www.filehippo.com/download_c...Be aware of course that a Celeron is a nobbled processor. The full blown chip has (as I understand it) a maths co- processor, whereas the Celeron doesn't. In effect it's been nobbled... So it will never really spin along a rate of knots compared to the full blown cpu; and thus will be a little tardy, slow, sluggish with most current games? The graphics card too will effect how it performs with games...Incidentally, what model Dell do you have?message edited by trvlr

We have a couple Dell computers and want to install the generic Windows 7 Home Premium x86 ISO file X17-58996.iso . We have two valid unused Dell Windows 7 HP authentication keys.

1. Will there be a problem installing generic Win7HPx86 instead of the version from a Dell disk (which includes all Dell bloatware)?

2. Is there any special reformatting to be done on the hard disk or will it simply happen upon installation?

3. Are the Win7HPx86 serial product keys Dell provided able to authenticate the generic version of Win7HPx86 (even though it may require activation by phone or some MS interaction)?

Thanks!

My ISP (Qwest) has repeatedly blocked my internet access due to malware/bot detection over the past 3 months.I have 5 computers on my network, but Qwest is not able to tell me which one it is coming from. I will submit a separate topic for each computer. This one is for a Gateway laptop running windows Vista Home SP1 wireless to the router. When this started happening, I was using ZoneAlarm Extreme Security only for my computer security. My ISP (Qwest) has suggested many different software solutions, which I have implemented and scanned with. They include Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, TrendMicro RUBotted, BotHunter, Microsoft Security Essentials. I have also received information from several local computer techs to use MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, AVG free and Avast Anti-virus. The last one I spoke with said everything Qwest has suggested is useless as is AVG free and ZoneAlarm (except maybe the firewall). He recommends MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware and Avast. Quick scans by any of these programs find nothing. Full scans produce adware cookies, but nothing else for the past month+. I pretty much run a full scan by one of them each day and remove anything that they find. Here is the most recent log Qwest sent me of the detected Bot activity. This is the first time I have heard that it is Torpig, which I guess is an infection of the master boot record, which can cause all the other programs to not be able to detect it.Date & Time (GMT) Source Port MW TypeDate/... Could someone be kind enough to help me figure out a weird problem. I am not particularly computer literate so forget my ignorance! I bought a printer HP Photosmart C3100 All-in-One series. I used it on my old computer a compaq notebook (do NOT recommend it to anyone any HP computer in that matter!) I then changed my computer for a DEll XPS M 1330 (Hrr what a jewel! a real pleasure). The only problem is that i have Windows Vista professional on it and the installation CD to install my printer on it seems to be uncompatible or something like that. I can not install it .
May be someone will know what to do. (I hope i was clear in my explaination not sure)

Printer driver is installed and the printer does communicate at times with the computer and does a good job printing. However, intermittently when trying to print a document I'll get a message on the computer that says that communication has been lost and print job failed. I've checked all connections to make sure they are solid and no debris that might cause this. That has not corrected the problem. The other thing that happens is that the document I want to print will stay in the print queue/spooler and if I shut the computer and printer down and restart both it will print the job. And it may continue to print jobs but it's just a matter of time. Needless to say this is frustrating. I can print several jobs in a row with no problem and then I'll get this "communication has been lost between printer and computer". And I have to go thru the procedure above to get the last job printed. My wife doesn't understand how this works and will try to print the same job several times with the commo problem and then complains when it won't print.....and then they all print when the above procedure is followed. Any ideas what is going on??? Any fixes?? More replies Answer Match 40.74% The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer? But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested. About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used. Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro? I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course. I suspect it could be because of heat since the AC is turned off at night in this small office building. I am in the process of collecting its configuration details so for now, information is sketchy. There is a UPS feeding power to this computer. When it shuts down, it does not reboot by itself. I have looked at the EventViewer logs and do not see any major (red) events. The computer is being used as a 'server', primarily to serve network storage for sharing files with his 3 office computers. With this limited information, I am asking if there is a sticky troubleshooting guide to systematically test and identify the root cause of this issue to bring some reliability to his little 'server'. If it is determined to be because of heat, what can be done other than keeping the AC on all night? Thank you. A:Windows 7 Premium Dell computer random shutdown troubleshooting Hi rmk9785e, Welcome to Sevenforums. Try this, 1. Click Start. 2. Type Power Options in Start Search. 3. Click on Change Plan Settings next the power plan. 4. Click the drop down and select Never for the option “Put the computer to sleep”. 5. Now check if the issue still persists or not. 6. Also check the settings by clicking on “Change Advanced Power Settings”. 7. Expand Sleep under Power Options window. 8. Set all the options under sleep to Never and check. I also suggest that you check if any key on the keyboard is assigned to go to sleep when pressed on it. If the issue still persists, then you may try disabling the sleep option from BIOS (Basic Input Output System), for this you may need to contact the computer manufacturer for further assistance. 4 more replies Answer Match 40.74% I have a computer that I bought from Dell about one year ago. My connection to router drops very frequently, curently the generic driver which windows think is appropriate is installed. I wanted to undate that with Dell's driver which I can't find on driver download section. 64 bit WiFi driver is NOT there. 32 Bit driver is but that won't install on my machine. Can someone from Dell help? either to give me the link for correct driver download or confirm driver is not available in which case I would need to downgrade to windwos 8 as the system is unusable in its current state. A:Dell Inspiron 15R 7520 SE - Windows 10 64 Bit WiFi Driver not available on Dell Site Hello, On the Drivers & Download pages for the Inspiron 15R 7520 there are only 64-bit options for Windows, whether 8.0,8.1, or 10. So those drivers are the ones for the 64-bit version of Windows 10, as long as you filter the operating system option to Windows 10 64-bit. The file name may state "Win32" but if you click on the "View Details" link, and then check "Supported Operating Systems" near the bottom of the page you'll find that the driver supports both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. You don't mention which wireless card you have in that system so I can't link directly to the specific driver. Which card do you have and what error are you getting when trying to install the drvier? I would also recommend updating the firmware on your router. Many routers need an update to be able to handle Windows 10 specific drivers and cards reliably. What router brand and model are you connecting to? And do you have problems with all routers or just this one. Lastly, here is a link to the Dell Networking & Wireless Support Center. You will find a few support articles in there that may be of help to you. Let me know which card you have and when the last time you updated your router and, if you can't get the connection to work, I'll see what else I can suggest to help you. Todd 12 more replies Answer Match 37.8% I found this list on the Dell site that tells you whether they have tested a particular model for its ability to be upgraded to Windows 10. The Dell Vostro 3550 is not on the list of about 20 Vostro models, some with lower model numbers , some higher. Will they ever test it?? If you try to upgrade, windows 10 copies files and then in the 2nd of the three major sections of the upgrade (where you have that big circle in the middle of the screen) it just goes to a blank screen and then all disk activity ceases and it becomes well hung. Of course now, the machine thinks its os is win 10 and you cannot go back to a win 7 recover point . So you just lose all your data and apps and restore the factory image and then install 208 windows 7 updates and it takes like 8 hours in all. Sounds like a similar problem that people had with Vostros going from win 7 to win 8. Why not fix it. A:Windows 10 Upgrade - why isnt Dell Vostro 3550 on the list from Dell ? Well, after spending the better part of whole day trying to figure out why somebody else's Dell Vostro 3550 was not displaying anything after an even longer period of downloading the Windows 10 upgrade (from Windows 7 in this case) it turns out the fix required was to upgrade the BIOS to A11 (end of 2012). Hopefully this might save someone a wasted day in their lives. Before this I spent some hours before figuring out that the machine was in fact booting - only the display was black. So then it was a matter of figuring out key strokes to use (blind) to shut down and also enable the menu for safe mode. Safe mode worked, and so then more hours trying to work around the issue before finally stumbling onto some stuff online where the BIOS upgrade was mentioned - apparently also an issue with Windows 8? A:Dell Laptop w/ Windows 8 won't boot past dell logo screen Hello Univers789, Re-installing windows is the last resort. So before doing that, you can try the steps mentioned below which might fix the issue. 1. Restart the laptop and start tapping the F2 key at the Dell logo for enter the BIOS. 2. Navigate to the “Advanced” menu. 3. Change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from Intel Smart Response to AHCI. 4. Press F10 to save changes and exit. 5. Reboot the system. 6. Go back into the BIOS by tapping the F2 key and change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from AHCI to Intel Smart Response. 7. Save changes and exit by pressing the F10 key. 8. Reboot the system and it should boot normally into Windows. In case the above steps don’t fix the issue, run the Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA / ePSA) Diagnostics. Run the test and check if gives any error code. Note down the error code and update me with the same, would let you know the next course of action. This button in previous versions of the driver for Windows 7 opened a new window with sliders to balance front and back speakers in a surround sound setup. What I did: Updated my OS from 7 to 10 and updated the Realtek audio drivers accordingly - to the above mentioned version. What I expected: The "Show Meters" button would be present in the newest Realtek driver. What really happened: Upon upgrade to the newest driver, the "Show Meters" button disappeared. I have reinstalled the newest driver multiple times with no avail and tried the driver from Windows 8.1 and the default driver from Realtek with worse affects (Dell Audio window is missing most elements/drop down options, etc) If anyone would know how to address the issue, if this is intentional, or who to escalate this to, I would appreciate it. A:Latest Version of Dell Audio is missing "Show Meters" button. (Windows 10, Dell XPS 8700) I feel that I should be more observant. Could explain why there was no "Show Meters" button in this release but I thought Windows 7 also had the same leveling and there was the leveling in Dell Audio as well. I'm still going with a new sound card from Creative however, seen a super nice$70 one that looks awesome and seems to have features to match.

Have u looked in the BIOS and mad sure the CD is the first boot device, this should be installable (changeable) in the BIOS, altho your BIOS might not have that option, and u can leave it that way as it will not mess up anything. Yo, my father has a Dell Dimension 2400 as his office computer(see bottom of this post for tech specs) and I want to upgrade it to an AMD Athlon 64 3300+ Socket 754. What I wanted to do was place the new upgrade into the same case as the Dell. Here's what I plan on purchasing...

AMD Athlon 64 3300+ 2.40GHz / 256KB Cache / 1600MHz FSB / OEM / Socket 754 / Processor

My problem is that I want to get a motherboard which will fit the ATX power connector in the Dell computer and that the Motherboard will be able to use the amount of power in the Dell computer (not sure of the wattage of the PSU). Any ideas for a good Mobo is appreciated.

Tech Specs (Dell Dimension 2400):
Pentium 4 - 2.4 Ghz
Some Intel Mobo w/ integrated graphics
2 x 256 MB PC2700 333Mhz
...etc... lol, nothing much else matters

I'm ASSUMING that the Power Supply is 20 pin (I'm not at my father's office so I wouldn't know). If you're missing any info that you need to help me let me know.

What is it you plan on doing with the computer? gaming? if the present motherboard has a AGP port you would be better off spending your money on a graphics card.

Your also going to need a copy of XP once you switch the motherboard from a intel chipset to a amd chipset your not going to be able to boot from the existing hard drive. you also wont be able to use the dell recovery disk to reload windows once you swap mobo's.

Most of Dell's PSU's with P4's are 300watt

The system is about three years old

A:My Dell computer will not start

Actually the cpu is probably the issue. Normally we would look at the heatsink fan but Dell uses a fan for case cooling and to cool the heatsink and it may be that fan also.
Can you get into the bios and see the temps and fan speed? Hard drives are also warrantied for 4 years but you really aren't getting far enough to have it be a bad hard drive.

I have a Dell XPS 410 that is 2 years old. I started getting blue screen errors and called Dell they said it was the hard drive. I replaced it and still kept getting the errors. When I called Dell again they said it was the mother board so I took it to Best Buy and they said it was the mother board. I had them replace it and have had it home for just a little over a week and today I got the blue screen again. It did a couple of restarts on its own and then today just the blue screen. Does anyone have any ideas on what else might be causing them?
Thanks

It seems that your virtual memory is quite low, Go to your uninstall and try uninstalling programs and such that you rarly or never use. Low space on your hard disk usally is the cause of a slow computer. Also, try and remove some unimportant things (i.e old document, Power Points, things of that sort) to an alternate hard drive or USB Storage Devise...that should help

One of my coworkers brought in one of her personal machines, which is completely new (still packaged up and everything); an HP ProDesk. After going through the initial setup and installing AVs, changing IE settings and all that good stuff, I ran Windows Update. For some reason, a Dell, Inc. update showed up.

Should there be any reason for this?

Hi, I have had a lot of trouble on my 6 year old Dell Desktop Dimension 2400 computer, it is too complex to go into detail here' but it has been a nightmare for nearly 4 weeks and I am still going to have do it all over again as in reinstall Win XP / or the drivers at least.

It crashes to Bluescreen every time I Insert a USB stick, Connect and start my Printer, or connect my Western Dig Ext HD which has all the stuff I backed up on.

The major problem was that I missed the "install order list" the first time (my own inexperience) but I have found another DELL list and it Contradicts the First order List anyway' Sooo! Is there a site where I can find out what I need the Order to install them and download them onto a Disk or USB as I had no internet when I first installed Widows XP that was the beginning of my downfall. I have been to DELL Forum's and tried to do the things they suggest but you cannot delete all the USB,s in Disc Manager/ Devices/ USB's/ as you have no Keyboard or Mouse half way through? Thanks if you can help Dasha

A:Can I use other drivers on a Dell computer

Wow. Yea. Sounds like your machine is currently "quite the mess"!

You should certainly start with the drivers on the Dell web site.

Always start with the chipset drivers. I'd do network and storage (IDE) drivers next then the others. Install drivers before installing the applications.

Hi,

I am helping a friend who has a Dell Inspiron N5105 laptop running Vista Home Premium.

It was supplied only recently as part of an insurance claim settlement - she was told it had just been built for her specifically so she expected it to be problem free.

The internet works fine and she can check her email and facebook, etc - but although Skype 4.2 is pre-installed she cannot logon to the service using her ID and password, and neither can I, it just says for ages "Signing in" and eventually "Skype cannot connect to your account - for help click here" but that link doesn't work either.

She has asked for a password reset and logged onto the Skype website to complete this successfully, but the client still does the above - and the same with my own account.

Also, the screen to activate her copy of MS Office XP is corrupted (just showing as blank box!).

To try to resolve both problems, I backed up her files (only a few) and did a factory reset from the recovery partition. The Skype problem remains.

The Office activation wizard now offers to activate over the internet ... but says it can't make a connection to the server, and when I try to use the telephone method it refuses to give us a phone number to call.

I have connected the laptop to a different internet connection and the problems remain.

She tells me that her boss is also unable to activate the latest version of Office that they have too, so this isn't just a Office XP iss... Read more

For the last few months our new (about 9 months old) dell computer running XP has begun to freeze up, theres no apparent pattern to it, but what we found is that if we right click and get the task manager, light up the program DAMon.exe, and click end process it does free it up every time.

We think the program DAMon.exe has something to do with Dells help system and did go to them and ask twice, we got two different solutions neither of which sounded right and we didnt do them. If its there program I assume we might consider eliminating it but are afraid to do that if it would result in their inability to assist in some other future problem.

I am a novice and have been a little leery about doing anything, what ever solution you might think of would have to be simple but if anyone could suggest a simple thing I would appreciate it.

Moms in Fl... says all the sudden her computer won't boot up, it acts as if it wants to boot, all the lights come on, such as the keyboard and all, but theres no video at all, then the computer shuts back down....

I'm a long way away, and at a loss as to what I should tell her, without looking at it myself.... and I'm no guru thats for sure, I'd probably try to see if it would boot from the disk, but I'd be lost after that!

Any ideas?

A:Dell Computer Won't Boot

No video?

First thing I would check would be the connection between monitor and system and the power cord.

The fact that the system shuts down would seem to indicate a PS problem, with no further info (IMO).

hey JohnWill,

I also have a Dell Dimension 2400 with XP-home on it. I bought the PC almost new at a yard sale last summer. The lady that owned it Even transfered the warranty for me. When I got it home (came with all the disks), the first thing I did was was remove all of the Norton's software from it.

A BIG MISTAKE I found out later. Dell has a "PC Restore for Window XP" that I found out later.

Basically, "When the Dell splash screen appears during the computer startup process, press and hold <Ctrl> and then press <F11>. Then, release both keys at the same time.
NOTE: Some systems like Inspiron Mini 9 (910) do not support System Restore as they do not have <F11> nor any substitute."

In the Dell PC Restore by Symantec window, click Restore. Alternatively, press <Tab> to highlight Restore, and then press <Enter>.

I didn't know this !!!

I right clicked on "My Computer" icon to the "Microsoft's Management Console" window and I have 3 portion's.

The first one is a "Healthy EISA Configuration" that is FAT 31MBs., the 2nd one is "... Read more

So you are saying Ctrl+F11 does not work??

If Ctrl+F11 is broken it can be repaired sometimes but is not easy, lots of reading to do.

http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/fixes.htm

Your uninstalling Norton Software while in Windows did not break it, the most common cause of this problem is Installing XP from the CD, Dell uses a proprietary Master Boot Record (MBR), when you reinstall XP from the CD, it replaces this MBR with a generic one and breaks the Ctrl+F11 functionality. If the Dell image is still on the ""healthy Unknown Partition" that is a FAT32 3.49 GB's", then you can repair it in most cases following Dan Goodells instructions.

Have a Dell 410 XPS with vista that I would like to reformat. What is the proper procedure for reformatting both the C and D drives. My reinstallation disk has more options than the reinstalation disks that came with my old Compaq(it had 2 cds and no otions). The manual that came with my computer is rather vague about this. I know this can be a long drawn out affair, and have backed up all my info and would like to clean my computer out and bring it back to like it was the day I got it. Yes I do have some major issues with my computer that requires me to reformat, mostly caused by me.
thanks mike

A:Reformatting A Dell 410 Computer

I did a Dell today that used F8 to access the recovery partition. That should be the quickest way to reformat your Dell and will leave the recovery partition intact (along with the Tools partition if you have one).

If you'd like to get rid of all partitions, then you'll have to delete the partitions and create one partition to hold everything. Then you can install Vista with the Operating System, Drivers, and Utilities disks that came with your Dell.

Personally, I'd go with the first option above - it's quicker and you won't have to install all the drivers and applications.

Hello,
I just purchased a new XPS 8900 desktop delivered on 5/25/2016 and is restarting itself.  No new hardware installed or program except World of Warcraft and Ventrilo.   Just really started using this machine late last week since I was really busy after it arrived.
I research the web and it said it maybe PSU related issue.  It is under warranty but any idea why a new computer is restarting it self?
Thank you.
Susan

A:New Dell Computer Restarting by Itself

Windows 10?
There are many possible reasons, both hardware and software: PSU, RAM or hard drive problem, overheating, corrupted OS or other software...
Does it just restart? Any errors on the screen? You can look in Windows Event Viewer for errors around the time of a crash that might point you in the right direction.
If you bought it directly from Dell, I believe you have 21 days from invoice date (not delivery date) to return it so contact Dell Tech Support ASAP.
If you got it from a big box store, you can probably return/exchange it under whatever policy they have. So get going.
Either way, be sure to reset Windows to the factory image before you return it.

This is Proview74. I recently bought a new computer and used a "secure delete" program to clean all files off the old Dell computer (4700). I still have the Operating System (XP Media Center Edition 2005) reinstallation DVD for the Dell 4700, which I tried to reinstall by inserting it into the cd drive and rebooting the unit. However, the screen asked me for a password which I cannot remember (from 2005) when I first bought the computer. In fact, I don't even remember using a password at the time.

Is there anyway to over-ride the password, or use a substitute password, to get the computer to accept the reinstallation disc? I tried pressing f12, got into the BIOS section, but I have to enter a password to change the password to a new one. I am at a loss, and if I can't get it reinstalled, a perfectly good computer will have to be scrapped. Would love to get it going so my grand kids could use it.

Appreciate any help to get this going. Thanks for your help.

A:Re-installing XP on Dell computer

We don't generally offer help with password issues here for obvious reasons but F2 should get you into BIOS where you'll be asked for a password. F12 simply shows you the boot menu so you can boot from the CD and I'm surprised if the password is necessary at that stage.

You could enter the Service Tag, which is printed somewhere on the case, into the Dell website and enquire whether they set a password and on satisfying them you were the purchaser, they should tell you but if you set it yourself and forgot it, you're lost. I have to say it would have been an unusual thing to do - do you have a recollection of doing it?

Attempting to install XP SP2 in a computer has no effect on how RAM modules function.

What is the model name and model number of that Dell, and how much RAM is installed?

Are you using an actual XP SP2 CD?

Have you deleted all current partitions, created a new C partition, formatted that new partition with the NTFS file system, and then attempted to install XP SP2?

Yes. Goto the manufactures web site for your printer and download windows 10 drivers and run the install. Do the same for the modem that you were using for fax, and make sure it shows up in the device manager without a yellow exclamation point, and then make sure the Windows Fax software is installed.
