Transfer large number of files

Q: Transfer large number of files

I am copying (not moving) 45,000 very large RAW image files from one HD to another on the same computer using the standard Windows copy routine. It is set to take a considerable time. It occurs to me that there might be faster ways. Any ideas please?

A: Transfer large number of files

You could try something like robo-copy which may be a little faster. What throughput are you getting between the drives?

I have a ton of media I'd like to transfer over to an external HDD.
I don't want to simply select a bunch of folders and drag n drop over to the backup drive tho, I want to select individual files (or folders) and save them into their respectively named folders on the backup drive.

If I do this with the default windows file copy manager (via the drag n drop method) I'll end up with dozens of "File Transfer" windows, each with its own percent completion status, and it tends to choke out my machine.

Is there a 3rd party software that will allow me to individually select the files/folders I want and add them to a queue, then batch transfer the whole list to a user-specified destination path?

I'm thinking an FTP client but that seems a little overkill. Kinda looking for something simple and easy.

Take a look at RickCopy

It is freeware written by an MS employee. It has many options. It was the only program I found that could easily copy a Windows.old folder with 206,000 file and folder objects, over a network without being an overnight job.

I will shortly need to move a large number (20,000) very large (20-30Mb) image files and associated tiny xmp sidecar files from one hard drive to another.

MS file explorer will make a meal of this so any suggestions for alternatives please? I have several folders each containing many thousands of files as above so moving a folder en-bloc is an option rather than file by file?

A:moving large number of large files to new drive

Simply drag and drop the folder(s).

Might want to do a copy first, verify that everything did indeed get copied, and then delete the originals.

I have a one year old computer running WIndows XP. Each week while running Norton Scan, my files seem to increase by a couple of thousand a month. My computer is not running slow and everything seems normal but I now have 185,000 files on it. I daily delete cookies and temporary internet files using the tools function on the menu. I am not downloading anything other than the updates from Norton and WIndows. This has been happening for about six months. Why are so many files being added? Thank you for any help you can offer.

Here is the situation.
We work a lot with IP Cameras (or sometimes called network cameras). Most of these IP cams have the capability to send jpg images to an ftp server when motion is detected.
The jpg image is about 40 to 50k in size and are stored in a folder named for the current date, so each day a new folder is created at midnight and all of the images for that 24 hour period are stored there.
Anyway, what is happening is that when these cameras ftp this information to an xp machine on the local 100mb network, some folders end up with A LOT of jpg images in them. In one day, one camera can store over 100,000 images in a folder. Opening these folders takes a long time...sometimes up to 5 minutes just to see the contents.
I have tried both using and not using File Indexing, but it seems to be the same speed either way.
From what I understand, the main resource File Indexing uses is memory. The systems these images are being saved to are WinXP Pro machines running at 1GHZ minimum to 4GHZ maximum and memory ranges from 512MB to 2GB.
I watch the task manager while loading these directorys and CPU is never over 4% so I assume the CPU has little to do with whatever is causing the system to take so long reading the files.

Anyone have any ideas as to how I can speed up the process of viewing these folders with so many images in them?

1) I have windows vista Home Premium. When I search for files, a very large number of MSxxxxxxx.log files get created. It is a nuisance to delete these files. Is their any way that their creation can be stopped?

2) I usually delete all *.log and *.tmp files (after I have run CCleaner) before shutting the computer.

a)When I put *.log in the search space, at first *.tmp files show up or vice versa. After some time the desired files show in the list. Is there a way to prevent this?

b) Some times files show up in the search list, but when I click on these to delete them, a message 'the file no longer exists in this locatin' shows up. why does the system show names of files that 'no longer exist' in the search location?

c) Some times a message appears 'you do not have permission for this action' when I try to delete a file. I could delete these files on previous occasions. Some times I have to run 'take ownership' 2-3 times before I can delete the file.

d) Some times when I type *.log in the search space. *.tmp list appears or vice versa. After a while the correct list appears. How can this be prevented?

I shall appreciate help with these problems.

Thanks

Hello. I am trying to permanently erase about 67,000 files from my recycle bin and other places on my computer. I found these files as a result of a recovery program called 'Recuva'. Whilst Recuva shows a huge list of deleted files, I have no means of accessing and transferring these files to the 'File Shredder' that I also have on my computer thats running Windows 10. I'm thinking there must be an easy way of getting rid of so many files apart from the enter individual file or folder method as prescribed by the File Shredder program.Can you help me please?

A:File Shredder and large number of files

Why do you need to shred these files? I would just empty the recycle bin.
File shredder is a program to eras "personal document" from your hard drive to prevent anyone recovering them. If you keep the original or updated files on the same drive it's a waste of time.

My computer is a few years old and over time - I appear to have accumulated over 700,000 files (per Norton AV during full system scan). In review of Windows Explorer (including hidden and system files) - I can only find about 150,000 files total. What and where are all those unaccounted for files - and how can I get rid of them? (makes scans etc. a real time consumer). I have CyberScrub Privacy software which cleans the index.dat files (as least as far as I have been able to tell). But the number of files continues to grow. Thanks for any help!! I have certainly come to respect the knowledge base here - you people rock pretty hard - DB44

Hi,

I'm trying to delete 1500+ hidden files (located in different directories) from my flash memory. But when I highlight them all and choose "delete", I get the "Preparing to delete" dialogue which says:
Time remaining: Calculating...
Items remaining: Discovered 0 items (0 bytes)...
Speed: Calculating ...Click to expand...

And it stays like this FOREVER until I cancel the operation. It will only work when I delete about 50 files at a time, which I'm not willing to do every time.

I've tried this both on my laptop and desktop with Windows vista business/home premium service pack 1, and it still didn't work.

Any idea how I can solve this issue?

UPDATE: It appears that the issue occurs only when I'm deleting files locating in different directories through the 'search' function. It's still an issue though, and I'd like to delete all files of a specific kind instead of doing it through each and every directory.

Your help is much appreciated

for some reason i cannot transfer large files (700MB to over 1GB) from a Windows Server 2008 R2 Essentials box to a Windows 7 Pro client.  It just doesn't work; it hangs.  When I try to upload to the server the file copies to 99% with 5 seconds left then hangs for a while then says the file transfer failed.

any ideas as to what could cause this.  just to mention, small files transfer fine ( up to 10MB or so).

I am pretty sure that all my workgroup settings are correct and both user accounts have administrative privilages. I remember getting a message at one point when i asked to find other workgroup computers saying that the mshome is not available and that the user may not have access to it but i am sure that i have given each user account full access. Any ideas?

You can try mapping the drive instead of sharing. Browse to the other computer via Network PLaces. Right click HD on other computer and select map network drive. It will ask for a drive letter, select whatever you want. Once mapped, I believe the drive will appear in My computer.

Hello,

I'm sharing a folder on a Windows XP computer with 15,000 sub-folders/files over a small network. This folder used to be hosted in Windows Server 2003 machine. But after I made the switch to XP, accessing the shared folder over the network takes over 1 minute for the files to list.

Does anyone know what might be causing this slow performance? And is it related to the XP operating system?

Any tips and advice will be greatly appreciated.

I run a software tool that often generates 75,000 - 100,000 small files that need to be deleted after the software exits. Right now, it can take 8 - 10 minutes to permanently delete all these files from a single run, and I usually have 4 - 8 runs to deal with, so do the math...

I have tried shift-del to permanently delete but it doesn't work - Windows still copies everything to the recycle bin. (I thought shift-del was supposed to bypass the recycle bin...)

Also, while moving the files to the recycle bin, I often get an error message: "Error 0x80070050: The file exists."

Bottom line is that it takes a *really* long time just to delete these files and I need a quicker way to do it.

What's the solution?

Thanks in advance,

Hello,
The aim of this post is twofold: first, I would like to help people who are as irritated with Windows7 explorer as I am. Second, I would like to spark a reaction from Windows developers and maybe understand why the -7explorer is as painful as it is.

The issue is simple:
I would like to sort, rename and visualise the large number of photos I have.
While everything was working perfectly with the previous Windows versions I had, these basic tasks have become nearly impossible with Windows7. Cancelling the automatic sorting is difficult, renaming files results in the explorer getting lost and visualising files per alphabetic order appears to be impossible. Finally, even having a good layout on the screen is mission impossible after moving or renaming a few files.
At this point I hasten to add that I am not a beginner with windows or computing in general. I have used previous Windows versions for years both at home and at work, and can do my own bits of code if needs be.

The only solution found so far:
After doing a fair amount of reading (and wasting a lot of time), I decided the only solution was to go for an alternative to Windows7 explorer. I personally chose to download? FreeCommander? but there are many other alternatives. So far it answers all my needs and I have stopped using Windows7 explorer.

My question to Windows developers:

Why on earth wreck a product that worked so well before? This is beyond me and I would sincerely like to understand. Anyway my m... Read more

A:Sorting files with Windows7 Explorer - Large number of issues

*FACEPALM*
You just don't know how to use it
To cancel automatic sorting, right-click on an empty space, and in the "View" sub-folder, uncheck "Auto arrange icons".
Secondly, with the first setting, renaming files will not make the lost, because after you renamed them, they will not be automatically arranged again.
The third issue, visualizing files per alphabetic order, is simple again. Just right-click, go to "Sort", and press "Name". Now, all the files will be sorted by name, alphabetically.

Hi there

If you have Loads (and I mean Loads) of small files - e-books, excel data. word docs, emails etc etc then File explorer runs REALLY slow on even fast devices

I gave up moving this lot after about 4 hours. (W10 machine).

Switched to Linux system -- did it in 45 mins similar hardware to W10 machine - both Real machines --not VM's and direct transfer (not via LAN).

What gives !!!!!

I know it's only a 1 time move but similar hardware with identical HDD should not have a HUGE difference in the move --note in fact Linux actually has hard a harder job since the file system was NTFS which isn't a native Linux file system either. Source system external HDD on USB 3 device,, target systm larger HDD device on USB3 device -- no hubs - USB 3 transfer working OK on both W10 and Linux so reasonable comparison.

IMO the NTFS file system has serious problems if you start messing around with this type of data. !!!! Perhaps Ms need to look at a better file system for Mass storage devices. 5 and 6 TB HDD's are quite common now even for consumer sector and not expensive either.

I know this is an exceptional job but it does show that something in File explorer isn't very efficient once you start manipulating large volumes of data - especially in small files. (Approx 290 TB of data consisting of 128,000 files in 55,000 odd directories)

I'm usually quite happy with Windows - but there is definitely a problem here. Fortunately it was a 1 off job though !!!!.... Read more

I have a laptop I use at home and a mini laptop that I travel with. I record TV shows with the laptop and move them to the mini to watch them on the road.

the programs are about 3 gb for a half hour show, 7 gb for an hour. I've been moving them one or two at a time on an 8 gb card, but that's kind of a pain. It takes 5 mins for each half hour show.

I have a wireless home network, but that takes an hour to move one half hour show.

Is there a faster way to move the files from one computer to another? Like ethernet cards or something?

ETA: I have windows 7 on both computers.
Thanks!

Why not just use a large USB drive, you could even use a folder sync program on the media recording computer to automatically copy the media folder to the external drive and watch them on the road. 2.5" USB drives also don't require external power.

I have recently purchased at New Computer running W7 Home Premium. So As most people do I am transferring all my files from my XP home Edition SP2 System over a simple home network.

When I tried to move something more that's more than 1 gig over to the W7 machine.. the New system freezes up every time and then shows me the Blue Screen of Death and reboots itself. If I stay under that amount of data everything works fine.

Is this a common problem with Windows 7?? and is there a work around to this?

Looking for advice..

Thanks

I'm having a problem when transferring large files between my network, and not sure what the cause is.

I'm trying to transfer files from my wired desktop to my wireless laptop, and smaller files seem to transfer okay. Whenever I try to transfer a really large file, however, the internet and connectivity totally drops on my desktop (which is giving the file) and causes the laptop to lose the file. The desktop computer stays offline for about 1-2 minutes afterward before it either starts up again on its own or I reset the network adapter. I suppose it's important to note as well that the file transfer can fail at the very beginning, in the middle, or even at the very end, but my desktop computer always loses its connection whenever the interruption happens... but sometimes it can successfully get almost all the way through the file transfer.

http://forums.techguy.org/networking/768807-cannot-copy-___-specfied-network.html
I tried following some of the steps in this case to confirm that I can ping and do all that jazz to my laptop and all of the services are running, since our problems seem similar. I've disabled all firewalls as well. However, since one computer is actually wired to the router, I don't think the solution will be quite the same.

Anyway, looking for some help, and glad to provide any additional information that I can. Let me know what I can do.

Or, at least, can you give me advice on how to transfer all my data?

Are y ou using "homegroup" for networking? Sometimes on some mixed OS networks homegroup has a problem with connectivity and slow downs.

You can verify if it is the problem by making a new network connection using "workgroup" and see if the problem still exists. If it does not you can disable IPv6 and kill homegroup.

I need some help in C++. Hope someone could give some help..

How could I change base of a very large number? For example I want to change the number 7146329081 into base 32768. I did this by hand and the answer is 6 21480 21497. I could do the last part (21497) but the rest I got stuck.

Here is the function that I have so far..

#include <vector>
#include <cmath>
#include <iostream>

const int BASE = 32768;
void normalization(const vector<int> &vec)
{
int carry = 0, digit = vec[0], x = 0, totalcarry = 0;
vector<int> temp;
while ( x < vec.size() )
{
digit *= 10; totalcarry *=10;
x++;
digit += vec[x];
if ( digit > BASE )
{
carry = floor ( (digit+0.0) / BASE );
digit = digit - carry * BASE;
totalcarry += carry;
if (totalcarry > base) // Stuck in here!
temp.push_back(digit);

}
}
cout << "Inside Carry : " << totalcarry << endl;
}

if u want to test it..put this in main :
vector <int> t;
t.push_back(7); t.push_back(1); t.push_back(4); t.push_back(6);
t.push_back(3); t.push_back(2); t.push_back(9); t.push_back(0);
t.push_back(8); t.push_back(1);

normalization(t);

Any help would greatly be appreciated...I spent alot of time already on this and getting frustrated...

Hello -

An end user wants to quickly gather the mail addresses of every retailer on this site:

http://www.hydrofarm.com/wheretobuy.php

I found a nice free email extractor application:

http://emailextractorpro.com/

However, since there are no actual links to the retailers (all within the same .php page), the extractor cannot find them. Anyone have any ideas on an easy solution to this? It'll be a huge pain to go through and get them all manually. I tried finding the full web address to each state within the source, but with no luck. If I had that I could at least just have the extractor run on each state, which would still save a lot of time.

Thanks!

I'm trying to copy a DVD catalogue with over 30,000 product images onto a USB backup drive. Windows 7 Explorer cannot seem to do this. It copied some of the files but then just stopped copying.

I rebooted my machine and tried to copy the files again but Windows reports that it's going to take almost 4 hours to copy! I suspect, however, that it will fail again to complete the task. The backup device has a data transfer rate of 450Mbps so it really shouldn't take that long, surely?

Is there other software I should use that's better than Windows Explorer? Or some other method to accomplish what I would have expected to be a simple task?

Hi there
It's a "Roundabout" way but this should work and be quite fast.

If you have a decent backup program (NOT WINDOWS STANDARD BACKUP) that is capable of copying DATA as well as just "Imaging" a disk / partition then this method will work quickly and easily.

I'm using ACRONIS but any decent commercial backup program will work similarly.

1) Backup the data to a spare area on any disk. The file will be called something like xxxx.tib in the case of acronis.

2) Now Restore the data to your USB device.

Job done --easily and very quickly normally.

Cheers

My friend decided to download something without double checking, and via installation a huge number of unwanted software were installed on his computer. Immediately after installation, both Chrome and Internet Explorer were modified. After restarting the laptop once, the following things happened

1. The screen brightness was changed, and power option could not be accessed to revert the change
2. The "start" taskbar was changed from blue to white, which usually indicated something was changed in the power and/or graphics setting as far as I know.
3. Internet access was removed, and windows could not detect any hardware to connect to the internet. The laptop's model number was Asus X555L and it ran on Wireless before.

I ran both DDS and GMer, as well as taking 4 screenshots. Here are the files and what they are

Hello:

I have a computer owned by the family of a friend that is complaining about a large number of unwanted programs being installed on the computer. The family stated that some of those programs began opening pop-ups advertising various things, e.g. virus scans. One member of the family went through the control panel and manually removed several of the programs. Subsequently Ccleaner, McAfee, and MBAM scans have been run, each identifying varying PUPs and being instructed to remove them. According to the family most of the PUPs appear to be gone, however there does seem to be a small number (1 to a small handful) that reappear upon reboot.

The computer is running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. At this point I am looking for advice on tools or techniques to verify the issue is confined to PUPs and there hasn't been a malware infection, and to identify any remaining PUPs and remove them.

I do not have regular access to the machine in question, however the friend does and will be able to run any scans, pull information, etc. as needed.

Thank you!

I did some work for a small company (replacing all PCs with newer PCs). They wanted to donate the PCs to a local youth group that I help out with and I told them I would take care of it.

I now have eight (8) Dell Optiplex Gxi 133 and seven (7) Dell Optiplex Gxi 166. All the hard drives have been fdisked. All hardware is identical (except for the processor). I even picked up nine (9) Dell Lattitude 166.

And may be hard to believe, but company was very good about keeping ALL original documentation and software. (Windows 95 and Office 97).

What would be the easiest software to use to make one good image and then transfer to all the PCs...and one image of the laptops? I really don't have time to individually load everything on each PC and laptop.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi

I am working at a large charity organisation wiht many computer illterate people. What has happned is that many shared files are saved all over the place and are therefore easy to find.

I recorded a simple macro with toolbar button to put the path and filename in the footer. Easy. However, I have to do this for 60 staff members profiles. A little tedious but not a great problem.

What is a problem is suing th emacro in the existing files. I oculd open them apply the macro save and close but that would take forever. What I would like to do is find a way to apply the macro on existing doucments in one foul swoop without opening them all. Hey guys, I don't do much programming, but need to create a huge list of numbers in a certain format. And not sure where to start or know the proper commands.

I need to create a list of sequential numbers in hexidecimal (0-F) and need it formatted a certain way

00000000-00000000-00000000-00000000
to
FFFFFFFF-FFFFFFFF-FFFFFFFF-FFFFFFFF

The number is 32 to the x16 and I do need the hyphens in the numbers and a "," in front of every number and a "." at the end of every number.

Then put all numbers into a plain text file.

If any one can help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

I started using Process Explorer (Process Explorer) a few days ago instead of the standard Task Manager. This was so that I could determine which program is blocking access to some JPG files I recently downloaded.

But thats not what I want to talk about. Take a look at the following screenshot:

The AUDIODG.EXE process has an impossibly high number of handles - 1,344,509. The screenshot was taken a few minutes before writing this post. Last night, the handle count for that process was just a little over 930,000.

A google for AUDIODG.EXE reveals that it is part of the Vista Audio Service. The follow is extracted from Larry Osterman's blog on MSDN:

What is AUDIODG.EXE?
One of the new audio components in Vista is a new process named audiodg.exe.

If you look at it in taskmgr, the description shows "Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation", but that's not really particularly helpful when it comes to figuring out what it does.

The short answer is that audiodg.exe hosts the audio engine for Vista. All the DSP and other audio processing is done in audiodg.exe. There are two reason it runs outside of the windows audio service.

The first is that there's 3rd party code that gets loaded into audiodg.exe. Audio hardware vendors have the ability to install custom DSPs (called Audio Processing Objects or APOs) into the audio pipeline. For a number of reasons (reliability, serviceability, others) we're not allowed to load 3rd party code into sv... Read more

Hi Peter,

This is very strange. Here is my 'Process Explorer', executed with administrative credentials of the same, taken just before writing this post. As you can see, mine only has a handle count of 116, and has been fluctuating between ~110 and ~130.

Check the properties/details of this file. Here is what I get:

It is possible that some application which makes use of this service fails to properly relinquish its resources (quoted section highlighted in red), a bit like a memory leak.

Well, I don't think 50 is a big number - but I do agree 50 restore points are really more than what one (read: I) need.

That explains a bit or two. Will either take down these restore points to a sane number or apply this patch. Unsure which of them, but I will definitively work on this.

Thanks for sharing.

About a week ago my PC somehow became infected with the Google redirect virus. I started searching for information about how to remove this, downloaded some programs (which may have caused more problems), and eventually discovered that the machine was infected with somewhere around 159 viruses. At first it was still possible to use the computer, but eventually the machine started freezing almost immediately after booting up. Before it came to that extremity, I had managed to download the Combofix program. Although I had read that this was not to be used without expert supervision, my machine had gone so haywire that I was on the verge of erasing the hard drive and losing all files. Before doing that, I decided I might as well try to run Combofix, which remarkably was still able to run despite all the infections/freezing desktop. I ran it in spite of being unable to disable my Symantec anti-virus program, as whenever I would disable it, it would automatically re-enable itself within moments, and I simply could not find a way to disable it. Combofix seemed to fix everything, and the PC was running well again.However, today my weekly antivirus scan alerted me to a large number of viruses, all but one of which it quarantined. The one that was not quarantined is titled atapi.sys.vir. I would be curious to know how my system became this badly infected with so many viruses, and especially how I can delete the atapi virus, and delete all the other viruses which have been qua... According to the software giant, affected customers are most likely using large hard disks in addition to create too many restore points on their machines.

Microsoft did not explain just how slow the startup process gets, but it appears that boot performance degradation is sufficient for users to become aware that something it’s going on.

“This issue occurs because the boot plan for the ReadyBoot feature exceeds the size limit of 512 kilobytes (KB). Each restore point creates a snapshot of Windows that Volsnap.sys must validate during the startup process,” Microsoft explained.

“When you create many restore points, the boot plan for the ReadyBoot feature eventually exceeds the size limit of 512 KB, and cannot be stored. Therefore, startup I/O operations are not precached, and the startup process is slow.

Hi there,

I have obtained an Excel 2010 workbook containing 1339 sheets of tables. The tables are all in the exact same format and represent an itinerary. Each sheet was extracted from a different pdf page and each entry is unique. There are 34 row entries on each sheet and each entry has 9 columns.

I need to be able to combine all 1339 tables into one master table on one sheet so I can sort and filter as one.

Many posts have discussed the Consolidate function however this involves naming ranges for each sheet. Obviously I can't do this easily for 1339 sheets.

Is there a way I can get all the data appended or concatenated into one master sheet? I have tried importing to Access 2010 to help but it only appears to allow one sheet at a time.

I feel like this should be easy so apologize if it is in fact.

Thanks

I began transferring a ton of files from one drive to another. I had to stop about half way through. When resuming, I constantly get the pop-up noting that files alreay exist in the "to" location and further asks if I wish to write over. I either have to click "yes," "yes to all" or "no." I don't want to say yes to all because if so, I will have wasted about 3 hours. I don't want to click "no" every 10 seconds either.

Is there a way to get "no for all" so it will only copy over files that do not already exist in the "to" location? How do I work that out?

A:Resuming a large file transfer

...well, I just dragged everything over again, starting over, so I wouldn't have to click no a thousand times. But, does anyone know how I can somehow get a "no to all" result?

I have over 50 GB of data I need to send over the web. What are my options?

After brainstorming a bit, the best two ideas I could come with are a data backup service (like Mozy) where I back the data up to a remote server, and my friend can than access that backup, or SFTP, which I do not know much about.

Any ideas?

Greetings.

I am having trouble with my computer rebooting while trying to copy large files (700 MB) from a CD to the hard drive.

I had this problem about 6 months ago when I was copying files from my Tivo to my PC. I am trying to copy to the same hard drive now that was giving me trouble then.

Here's a bit more detail.

6 months ago:
I copied 10 (?) hour-long shows from my Tivo to my computer. Each file was around 1 GB. While trying to copy #11 (?), the computer would reboot. It did this no matter how many times I tried. I finally gave up.

Now:
I've deleted those Tivo files to free space on my hard drive. I'm trying to copy 21 700 MB files to the hard drive. I've been able to copy 17. While trying to copy #18, the computer reboots. It has done this 3 times in a row.

There is a different amount of free space now while experiencing the problem than there was when I had the problem 6 months ago.

The hard drive is a secondary hard drive used for data storage.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
Ryan

Also, what happens if you copy File #18 by itself?

What happens if you skip that file, and copy #19 or #20?

Hi,

I have recently started having a problem with FTP transfers on large (over about 6mb) files to my CNC machine.

I have a single CNC machine I use for little personal machining jobs that takes programs from a windows computer, I have recently upgraded my transfer PC from NT to XP, I have no firewall and am using WSFTP to transfer the files.

If the file is over about 6mb WSFTP will get to about 80% or so then just stop, the connection doesnt drop it just stops transfering, I have tried various other FTP programs, but they all show the same problem.

The machine is the same as it was, and the only thing that has changed is the OS on the PC, NT to XP, is there any reason why this could be happening?, I have run out of all ideas.

Dan.

A:transfer a large amount of data

The problem is not with software. The problem is with the fact that your computer can only process so much data, when moving it from one drive to another. It is all about how those drives are connected, how fast of a CPU you have, how much RAM you have, how much available space on the drive in your computer and the ones you are moving data too and from for buffer space. Last is what the drives are rated, along with enclosures for max data allowed.

DETAILED PROBLEM STATEMENT
I keep my personal data folder ("Cliff," ~42GB, many files and subfolders) in the Public Folder on my Desktop PC. In the past (2-3 months ago) I was able to copy this folder across the LAN to the Public folder on my Laptop for those times when I needed to travel with the Laptop.

Now, when I attempt to copy the 42MB folder FROM the Public Folder on my Desktop TO the Public folder on my Laptop, some files/folders get transferred, but the connection fails within 1-5 seconds of initiating the copy. Error 0x80070035 eventually shows up. And, the connection is pitifully slow, ranging from xxKBPS to no higher than 8MBPS.

SOLUTIONS ATTEMPTED
1) Administrative Services-Routing and Remote Access switched from a default of Disabled, to Automatic. Made no difference.
2) Network Magic from Purenetworks/Cisco installed. It helped a little in the sense that more files/folders were copied before the disconnect of the laptop from the LAN. Ultimately not helpful. Now uninstalled.
3) Net Config Server shows Idle Session Time of 15 minutes, the default value. Since my timeouts happen within 1-2 minutes, this would seem to be OK.
4) SpeedGuide TCP/IP Setting for Vista used on Desktop PC (SpeedGuide.net :: TCP Optimizer / Downloads). This appeared to enable me to copy a smaller version (31GB) of the Cliff folder yesterday. But today, cannot copy the remaining 11GB before LAN disconnect.
Thank you for all help!

Just installed Win7 64 Home Pro from XP two days ago.
The last remaining issue I need to solve is a drag and drop file transfer to my other home network computer (HNC).

So far I've been able to d&d files from the HNC via Acronis WD in it's explorer mode without any issues, some sized in the multi Gb range. I've been also able to d&d small files directly to the HNC successfully.

When I try to d&d a large file, specifically my NVIDIA drivers sized at 123Mb the Win7 computer freezes immediately. The cursor is stuck and the computer is absolutely locked, the only thing that works to recover it is the power off button.
When I come back I don't get any indication of anything going wrong and if I look on the HNC drive the file has been transferred successfully!

I haven't tried copying files to the HNC via Acronis WD yet so I don't know if it will be able to write to it.

The HNC computer has not caused any issues in the past with XP, it's running Ubuntu Linux.

Thanks for anyone's input.

A:Home Network Large File Transfer Lockup

As a suggestion, test what happens when you attempt the drag 'n' drop operation in [safe mode + net].

The most likely problem causes are a bad anti-virus filter driver, or a NIC driver which needs updating.

Hi, I'm hoping for some help with something odd.

I have a Vista 64x workstation since Nov 08 which has been fine until recently. It has started having network problems when accessing large numbers of files from remote locations.

I have a readyNAS network storage device with a number of shares which are mounted as network drives on the PC, wired ethernet. Vista is set up as a private network and set to trust the LAN. The readynas is flawless when accessed from other XP and Vista machines on the LAN.

Recent example, tried loading on photos from a camera, approx 700 files.
Went fast at first, but over 300 files, copying would slow to a crawl - 16Kb.
While this is happening, other LAN access and internet access becomes intermittent.

If I use picasa, which accesses all photos on the remote drive, it'll work for a while but then crawl, only in this case the whole machine slows down.

I've tried disabling auto-tuning but that made no difference.

LAN has a NAT firewall (Netgear FWG114P with latest firmware) and there is no software firewall running. PC: Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz, 8Gb 800MHZ RAM, Sapphire 512Mb Radeon HD 4670, Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit.

A:64x Wired network dropping off on large no of file transfer.

Can anyone help? This is infuriating!

I have disabled IPv6 and auto-tuning.

(I long ago did the steps here: Auto Tuning - TCP/IP receive level and it made no difference).
Even though all the other machines on the network are fine I've pulled the infrastructure apart. Router updated to latest firmware, router checks out OK on vista compatibility checker, the switch has been checked and double checked + direct connection made, the LAN cables have been swapped out. This same machine has a ubuntu dual boot, so the same hardware in a different OS works absolutely faultlessly, and a VMware XP install on ubuntu also works faultlessly.

It feels like it can ONLY be vista ultimate 64!! There is something about this OS which is causing problems, but it started after the machine was 3 months old. Vista update maybe?

Hello,

I tend to use pretty long file names on my Folders, and also, often for the WORD documents inside.

When I try to transfer these to an external HD for backup, the following seems to happen.
But, it is very inconsistent.

Most of the time, but not all, it will ask me to if I want to skip the transfer because the name of the
Folder, or file(s) inside are too long.

If I say yes, but go back and look later, the files have transferred fine.
This is true sometime, but not all the time.
Sometimes it does the transfer, other times it does skip transferring them.

I just ran an experiment with a horrendously long folder name, and also for the WORD document I put inside.
Transferred just fine.

So, for W7, the 64 bit version:

What are the rules, and limits for the number of characters allowed in a
Folder name that will transfer without any problem ?

How about for what is inside the Folder; same rules ?

Can it be possibly that the external HD is controlling this ?

Thanks,
Bob

A:Max. Number Of Characters Allowed In Names For A Transfer To Ext. HD ?

I'm not sure---

But I've always thought that the maximum length was 255 characters in the ENTIRE path.

So, D:\ is 3 characters, leaving you with an additional 252 for all of the subfolders and the file name, COMBINED.

I have some long files names and use a lot of subfolder levels (over 90,000 data files and over 16,000 folders), so I have some long paths. When I copy all files from one drive to another, I occasionally get that notice you mentioned. But I've never noticed that the "too long" file names copy anyway. When that happens, I either go back and shorten the file name or ignore the notice and accept the fact that it hasn't copied.

You should be able to Google for more details.

This might help. I've never used it.

Is there a solution or must I go back to my retailer? Those unfinished Microsoft's products really annoy me.
Is there a soft which can do the same without changing the cable?
Thanks.

A:Transfer files from Vista to XP with Windows Easy Transfer

Did you install software on both?
Generally you will need to do so.

The simple approach if you have a router is just to make sure that the network name is same on both computers, then enable file and print sharing and make sure that the LAN and file and print sharing are not blocked by the firewalls on either machine and share the drive or folders you want and then you can see them in my network places , view workgroup computers on the other computer.

You can also do this with an ethernet crossover cable ,just connecting the ethernet cards of the two (*a crossover cable has the wires at opposite ends re arranged so the in wires on one end connect to the out on the other and vice versa)
Both windows and vista have file and settings transfer wizards and networking wizards designed to make this easier; but you can just do it all manually.

With your product did it say it was vista compatible?

I migrated to a new machine using easy transfer. I copied my files (user and data) to a hard drive that I installed in my new machine. I copied everything back and it all worked fine. Over time (the last year) I have altered my config and even wiped the OS and did a clean install. My problem is I would like to move some data files out of the Mig configuration to a useable format, but when I try to use easy transfer, it wants to bring over the user files as well to my c:. The problem with this is I have a very small c: that just has the os on it. Easy transfer wants to bring over 57 GB of user and system files that I don't want, and won't fit on the drive. The program will not allow me to choose another drive (other than c or not bring the system and user files over. It will not allow me to bring the files I want without these. I am not sure if I can recover these files (mostly pictures and music). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

A:Don't want to transfer user files with easy transfer

I should have looked a little deeper as I found the solution to my problem. For others, here is a link of a program which allows you to selectively choose which files to transfer and where to put them.

The author Mike Morawski has a nice tidy package here to do this job. I couldn't find a similar product in the forum, but that doesn't mean it hasn't been mentioned by someone else in here.

I belong to a large group that I send out emails to occasionally. Outlook 2007 on my Vista computer will not let me send to the whole group in one email. I have to split it into about 6 different emails to get it to go. When I was using Outlook 2000 on XP I did not have to do this. What setting can I use to force Outlook 2007 to accept all the addresses I want to enter so I just have to send my newsletter one time?

In a related question...Outlook 2007 will also hang up and not send the email to my group IF there is one email some where in the group that it does not like.
TWO QUESTIONS:
1) is there a way to force the email to go even if there is one bad address in the group and just bounce back an error message on the problem email?

2) Is there a way to make it tell me which email it has a problem with so I can manually remove it? Outlook Express will at least kick back a helpful error message and tell me what email address is causing a problem so I can just remove that name to make the email go to the rest of the people.

Thank you,
Cindy

I have been trying to encrypt a folder using PGP 9.0.6 and Cryptainer Secure It 3.1.7.

http://www.cypherix.com/

http://www.symantec.com/business/theme.jsp?themeid=pgp

What's weird is that the folder and the files within it will not encrypt and I don't know why? Further more the folder will actually be missing files. Can anybody explain to me? No, I am not setting the applications to erase files after completion.

PGP Conventional Encryption has worked finally. I tried all the obvious stuff first like closing all non-essential volumes (virtual disk that are created and encrypted by PGP), transferring the files to another drive, etc.

On a slightly separate issue. I did have some data corruption involving an older and separate group of files. However I deemed that to a hardware failure or a OS/Software failure. Figured it might provide valid insight.

Update: Now my PGP conventional encryption, non .exe file generation worked. I don't understand why it wouldn't work? Going to rename the source folder and try again. MY encrypted .exe file generation with PGP should work.

I tried again. PGP conventional encryption and PGP Zip both encrypted fine. I tried creating a PGP .exe file and again it failed and files are missing; why?

I've done a full virus scan and spyware scan. No known threats detected that would cause this. I've done two system wipes in the past months. I've also removed, reinstalled, and or repaired the installation of both a... Read more

It's sort of a weird problem, really. I have a mac with OS X connected to a vista PC through an ethernet cable. I'm able to access and copy folders with the pc, but when I do, only a small amount of the files are transferred. I'll tell it to copy a folder with several gigabytes, and it will successfully transfer like 100 mb. I need to transfer about 110 gb. I split it into a bunch of different folders, trying to do each one separately, but to no avail. No error message, or any other indication that there is a problem. It's as if vista simply ignores the majority of the files I'm trying to transfer. Any hints as to what might be happening? Thanks in advance <3

I saved my files and settings from a previous installation of windows 7 to an external hard drive using windows easy transfer. Now when I try to transfer those files and setting to my new installation I get the following message:

Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer your files and settings.

The message pops up only a few seconds after the transfer begins.
Why is this?! I need those files and windows has screwed me. Everything is basically the same as before I reinstalled. Same computer, same windows 7 installation just recovered to factory settings. Same system language as before. BTW I'm on a Toshiba L505 laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium.

I have tried all the usual suspects such as a clean boot and uninstalling my antivirus to rule out third party interference. I have more than enough space on both my computer and on the external hard drive. I have tried only transferring a user account a few MBs large. I have reinstalled the OS twice just in case something went wrong there. I have clicked on the .MIG file directly. All lead to the same error message.The transfer file seems to be intact and not currupt

Is there another software other than WET that can use the same transfer file that WET created to restore my files? Please help me solve this if you can or at least point me in the right direction because right now I'm clueless. I can't emphasize how important those files are to me. I've searched for solutions on several forums and it seems tha... Read more

Both my machines are vista 64 ultimate.
Both fully updated.
One is only a few days old.

The problem is transferring large files. the transfer hangs up not too long into the transfer. And even smaller files.

I believe the problem lies in the new vista machine. I cant send large files to the other vista machine, or my XP machine. But the other Vista machine file transfers work just fine.
Both Firewalls are off for what its worth.

Help, Seriously frustrated.

A:"Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer your files and settings." Why?

Well, I finally gave up. I've scoured the internet for a solution. You'll probably find duplicates of this post all over. This has been a known software problem with Windows Easy Transfer for years and Microsoft has done nothing to fix it or warn users of the risks. Shameful!
Anyway, I managed to recover my files with this life saver of a program here>
MigRecover Utility for Microsoft’s Windows Easy Transfer | Visser Labs
MigRecover Utility for Microsoft's Windows Easy Transfer.
I can't express how grateful I am to the developer and the host for the download. You guys are the most awesomest people ever. Cheers.
Here's how you modify the syntax in commmand prompt if you used a password to protect the mig file in WET>
"Windows Easy Transfer couldn't open the file" on second attempt to recover files/settings
Just remember to change the source drive letter in "C:\SaveData.MIG" to the actual drive it's stored on if your MIG file is on an external drive like mine was; whether it's E:, F:, G: or whatever.
Good luck to anyone with the same issue who stumbles upon this post. I hope it helps you as it did me.

I decided to do a clean install and before reinstalling the operating system I used the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to save my files to a network drive. The file is there and appears to be saved properly....the file name is USMT2.UNC....there are 2 documents w/n called: IMG00001 and status. When I use the wizard to access the files again it gives me this error message: "The location you specified does not contain stored information. Please type a valid folder path into the edit box." How do I recover my files?

A:Files & Settings Transfer Wizard Is Opening My Saved Files

I'm not real familiar with this feature, but I think that you've got to use the FAST wizard to restore the files to your system. Go to Start...All Programs...Accessories...System Tools...Files and Settings Transfer Wizard and launch the dialog.

i've filled my hard drive on one laptop with television shows and i don't have a dvd burner on this computer so i would like to transfer them to my other laptop that does. i planned to do this with a 2gb flash drive, so i loaded about 1.9 gb of .avi video files (episodes of a television show) on to the flash drive and transferred them onto the other laptop. the problem then arised. i found that when i tried to open these video files on the new laptop (using windows media player which is what i used on the other computer to play them) they played as audio files with no video at all...i don't understand how or why this would happen please help if you can....i have a lot of files to transfer. i also was curious what would be a good free software i could download for the burning to dvd-r process, and should i shrink them also...i'm new to the dvd burning process as you can tell.

Hello

I have been suggested to keep my data in a separate drive than my operating system.

Actually, my hard drive is partitioned in two drives, c: and F:

I want to transfers my directory c:\user to f:\user. I did try to copy between them, but some files where not transferred

So what is the best way to do that. After, do I need to do special thing to make sure that all the references will be followed to the new files positions, IE when accessing them via my task manager

Hope I'm clear enough whit my soso English

A:Large Transfer of data between drive c: and drive f:

Hi Martin. I had the same problem with some of my movie files. I do not know the official answer. However, it is my experience that the size should not be greater than about 5Gb. If your files are smaller that that, you should not have problems.

Have you tried using SyncToy to the transfering?

A friend of mine went to a yahoo personal profile & went into one of there briefcases, instantly he saw pictures, then it took him directly to a pornographic site. When he hit the Close button it directly took him to another porno website and they kept appearing faster than he could close them. So today I get on the computer & go to explorer & in my C:\Documents and Settings\Jolene\Start Menu there is 2 short cuts labeled ( words I 'd rather not post) I didn't open them I just went to properties got the file names and did a search for those files.

here is the info I retrieved

Size 635 KB
Size on disk 672 KB
16 files/ 5 folders

Size 583 KB
Size on disk 612
15 files / 5 folders

I instantly did a virus scan and found nothing. So what are these files & how do I get rid of them?

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks

A:Very Large files, what are they

Please do this. Go here http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ and download Hijack This. Un Zip it and click on the Hijackthis.exe.

Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

Do NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless. Someone here will be glad to advise you on what to fix.

Hi, I'm trying to use MSN to transfer some files to a buddy of mine. The files are about 300 Mb each, there are two files total(600Mb).

Each time I try to send a file out MSN tells me that the transfer failed and timed out. Is there a limit to the file size that you can send through MSN?

A:MSN:How large can files be?

How are you sending it? Email has a limit, of course. But there should be no limit on size if you are using FTP or something like that.
