Right-click Start menu programs only brings up "properties" option

Q: Right-click Start menu programs only brings up "properties" option

Hi everyone -

Since the new year, I have observed in a few systems including the one I use most frequently, that a right-click on any program or file brought up in the start menu brings up only one selection - "Properties". And when selected, "Properties" brings up the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" screen - just as if I were clicking on the Quick Task bar itself and selecting Properties.

I haven't really gotten into this yet and before I do, I wanted to ask if anyone else has experienced anything like this or knows what may be the underlying cause.

All virus and malware scans are clean; DSS incorporting HiJackThis are free and clear of debris.

Thank you. . .

JC

A: Right-click Start menu programs only brings up "properties" option

Hello mate i had the exact same problem!

If you open the registry editor and go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

There you should find a key called "NoChangeStartMenu".
Make sure the value of this is set to 0 and if not change it.

Also check here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

You should find the same key "NoChangeStartMenu"
And make sure this is also set to 0.

Restart your computer and your problem should be solved.

So I somehow got a Trojan Virus. I used my Super Anti Spyware to delete it. I restarted computer and when I double click, I would get the "open with" box. I redid spyware check. Folders open up fine. Now, I get "run as" and it asks me which user account I would like to open up with. If I go to start and run a program, same thing, "run as" option.

Why oh why is this happening? LOL.

I was telling someone yesterday how I just bought a new laptop (going from my old 1gb 1.8 ghz VISTA to 3gb, 2.1ghz WINDOWS 7) and that I still have had maybe one or two problems ever with my desktop of 4 years. I jinxed myself

Hello everyone, I have a combination of problems...

Originally, my only problem was that right-clicks in a folder other than desktop caused windows explorer to hang and then crash. So I fixed it using shellexviewer, as was recommended here: Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers.
I disabled a bunch of non-windows contextmenuhandlers, and that seemed to solve it.

After that my start menu "All programs" bar stopped working. It doesn't display anything, and the start menu freezes, and eventually crashes windows explorer. (Also screwed up the start menu search in the same way, but sometimes it decides to work) I tried re-enabling all the things I had disabled with shellexviewer, but the start menu was still screwed up.

I tried using system restore, but the problems are all back, and of course the iexplorer freeze then crash r-click problem is back as well. I don't know what to do...

I should also mention that just before this trouble started, I rebuilt the icon cache because no icons were showing in folders.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Do you or anyone else willing to help me, know which registry key I would have to manually delete in order to remove the "Move To" and "Copy To" options from my context-menu?

Please help me solve the problems with my registry. I'm using Windows XP Pro (64-bit Edition). The problems started when I tried opening windows by clicking on folders & files, which are listed on my Start Menu:

Whenever I double-click (or right-click on any folders listed on my Start Menu, and then select "Open" or "Explore") to open files listed on the menu, the "Move To" & "Copy To" windows pop-up.

The "Move To" & "Copy To" windows won't go away, unless I click on "OK" or "Cancel". And now that I have the lastest stable-release of WinRAR installed on my XP, the "Move To" and "Copy To" options aren't listed on my context-menu, anymore. However, I can't open any of the folders I want to access via my Start Menu because my registry is still setup to make the "Move To" and "Copy To" windows appear. And now when I click on "OK" or "Cancel" on each of those windows: none of the folders I wanted to open appear.

The previous owner of my PC configured the registry to make the start-menu & context-menu include the "Move To" & "Copy To" options. So whenever I click on an option in the start m... Read more

Is there a way to add the WinXP style "explore" option in the right click -folder- context menu?
So the left window pane opens up the folder tree structure rather than using the right pane's folder view.

Right *deep breath*

The first thing that went wrong with my computer was to do with Mcafee On access scan. A week or so ago the little "V" sign stopped appaering in the system tray. Also, when I start the computer the red box that says "welcome to Mcafee" and which version you're running and stuff stopped appearing. I accessed the on access scan through program files and it told me that the on access scanner was enabled and working so I wasn't too fussed that it didn't appear.

Now, yesterday my computer went weird. The "run" option on the start menu disappeared and so did the "Turn Off Computer" red button. Both of them just disappeared. Task manager was also unavailable. When I pressed Ctrl, Alt and delete a box just popped up and said something like "task manager has been disabled by your administrator". I ran Virus Scan, Ad Aware, Spware blaster and Spybot Search and destroy. They all found various stuff on my computer and I got rid of it. After I did that Task Manager worked again, Which was good. However the "turn off computer" and "run" were still missing from the start menu. Well I googled around a bit and realised this guy had the same problem: http://www.bullguard.com/forum/10/qu...nd-_31844.html

He managed to resolve it by logging off and running a program called ewido. I downloaded the trial of ewido and ran it, following his instructions. It found loads of stuff but when I'd quarantined... Read more

But after I make the change and click OK, left clicking on the Start button does nothing, doesn't open either the Classic or Win 10 menus. Currently, I have the Windows key set to open the Win 10 Start menu but I would like to be able to left click on the button and do it that way.

Why doesn't it work when I change the settings?

I cannot delete one of two anti-virus programs (conflicting) because the "All Programs" with the green arrow does not appear at the bottom of the Start menu.

I do not know how to get it back and I can't get to any of the installed programs...help!

A:Cannot see "All Programs" in the "Start" menu!

If 'run' is available, click on it. In the box type msconfig then press the enter key.
When the program comes up, pick the startp tab. Under that tab is a list of programs
that start when the computer boots. Note the check boxes at the left. Uncheck your virus programs and exit. Reboot and see if you get your programs button back.
To uninstall, you can try using the control panel. In it, pick add/remove programs. There, click on the antivirus program you want to uninstall and tell it to uninstall.
If that don't work, you may have to restart your computer in the Safe Mode and remove it from there.

Hope this helps.

Hi, I recently fixed my laptop from not booting at all. The problem was, I dual booted my Windows 7 Starter with Ubuntu using a partition, I made another partition to try to allocate more memory to my Ubuntu side and I got an error on boot up that said "Error: Unknown filesystem Grub rescue>". I fixed this and deleted the dual boot but now when I boot up into Windows (as this is now the only OS) on my start menu where it used to say "Default Programs" now says "Default Programs command object for Start menu". I can't help but think this has something to do with the huge mistake I made but I was wondering if there is a way I can fix this?

Hi

With Vista I became a big fan of the search capacity into the "start menu - all programs" when I need to launch a software.

But in Seven (currently using 7000 x64) I'm a little bit disappointed about some strange thing in there.

I've got 2 softwares that I use often:
- Mediacoder (for encoding video files)
- M.Play Home center (for my IR module and remote control)

For the first of this two I start to type: M E D I A ... But as long as I do not type MEDIAC (and more) the only choice Seven propose to me is Mediaplayer and MediaCenter.

For M.Play I need to type M.Play H without what it still propose to me MediaCenter and Mediaplayer.. and only this 2 !!

I really do not understand why typing M.P give me the only choise of WMP and WMC ! It should display M.Play Home Center. As it should display Mediacoder when I start to type Media.

And Under Vista it give to you the most used answer. If you have multiple possibility, the first on the list will be the one you often chose.
In Seven, the choise is WMP and WMC.. until you type enough letter which became quickly annoying. This thing is supposed to make faster the way of launching apps... but not in Seven

Does your Seven work like that ?

I am finalizing an image for our labs and need to add some shortcuts which we have used for years, to the new Windows 7 Start Menu.  I am *not* trying to add any icons/shortcuts to the "All Programs" section.  What I want students to be able to

others are shortcuts to PDF files on a network drives.
I have seen that I can add things through right-click and "Pin to Start Menu", but it won't work for most of what I want to do.  I have tried registry hacks, jumplist creators, and hours of searches and don't seem to find anything specific to this.

I've looked everywhere I can imagine and while a lot of people have the same problem as me, I cannot find a single solution. Anyway, I came upon a programs folder in the "all programs" part of my start menu. I clicked it and it looked like just a duplicate of the "all programs." Stupidly, I deleted it and after emptying my recycle bin, "all programs" was empty. I created a new account and copied and moved that start menu to my old one. Copying a pasting seems to have taken up quit a bit of space and the new programs folder doesn't show shortcuts but all the lengthy paths and install files, bin, and things. This started a few weeks ago, don't know how or why.

If i go to Start (globe on lower left), and in "Search programs and files", e.g. type "car", it gives me the info essentially in triplicate - it lists:
"Control Panel (21)";

"Documents (1786)", which lists 5 files;

"Pictures (1786)" which is an exact duplicate of the same 5 files it's listing under "Documents (1786)";

"Files (6614)" which lists 2 files in common with the "Documents"/"Pictures" listing, and 3 other "car" related files.

If I right click on one of the files which is listed in all 3 categories, the path is identical -

C:\Users\NAME [i.e., the name I gave my computer]\Documents
So anotherwords it is NOT listing a file of which there are 3 copies, it is pointlessly listing the same file in 3 separate categories.
The file does not exist in my actual "Pictures" file, only in my actual "Documents" file.

When I place my cursor on one of the files listed in all 3 categories , it highlights the file in all 3 categories.

When I do a Search it used to be very fast, it's now very slow.

I've searched the net for a cause/solution and found none.
I enabled the Search fix tool (forgot what it's called) and it found nothing.

I've considered doing a System Restore, but don't know how long ago this began, I may not be able to go back far enough.

I haven't been able to find any hits on this when searching, although I have to expect it has been brought up before. It is behavior that I used to see in Windows XP, but have definitely noticed it in Windows Vista when running in the XP "classic" view.

I navigate the Start Menu Programs Group list and run a program. Everything is fine. I eventually put my computer in Standby mode. Later, I wake up the computer and go to the Start Menu Programs list again. This time, I may see one or two different behaviors:

The last programs group I accessed is now hidden from view. There is a double arrow at the very end of the programs folder list that when clicked, it shows the programs group that was hidden from view. The whole programs group list is almost completely hidden, except for the last couple of programs groups that I accessed in the last session. Again, the double arrow icon is at the end of the list and when clicked, the whole programs folder list reappears.

I find that this behavior is inconsistent, but most frequently happens after accessing Microsoft Office programs. Unfortunately, because I was familiar with this behavior in Windows XP, I didn't make a mental note of when I first started noticing it in Windows Vista (I've been using it on my laptop for over 3 years). It could be that it wasn't happening initially when I first got my laptop, or I simply didn't pay attention as the frequency was low. But, I've come to notice it more lately and I'... Read more

Hi

I accidentally deleted all of the programs on the "all programs" list on my start menu.

I've tried restarting the computer but I don't really know what else to do. I've tried to change the registry but I may have done this wrong: what should the registry entries be to make the programs appear?

What else should I do? It's supremely annoying because I can't open Windows Update, Disk Cleanup or anything :(

Thank you

A:Move "All Programs" link in start menu

Hello Sklar, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm sorry, but you will not be able to do this with the Start Menu in Windows 7. However a 3rd party program like the free version of Vista Start Menu let's you have a customizable Start Menu that may work you instead.

Hope this helps,

So I had a folder in my "all programs" called the same name, and basically it showed the duplicate version of all programs. I deleted it and then realized all of my "all programs" were gone in the start menu except for things installed after. I tried restoring the file from the recycling bin but that did not work.

Does anybody know how to add your "All Programs" to the start menu or any ideas how to help???

Thanks

I had opened my start menu, and I noticed that there was a new folder highlighted yellow named "Programs" and when I opened it, it was a duplicate of everything already in my start menu. So, I deleted it. Now when I restarted my computer I found that there was nothing inside my start menu anymore.

If you can pardon my stupidity for deleting it, can anyone suggest a solution of how I can recover the folder? (I don't have the backup disks and I can't reformat).

Is there a tweak that anyone knows that can make the All Programs in the start menu expand like it did with XP?

I don't know why MS made it the way they did without giving an option to expand it if we wanted to.

A:Tweak for Start Menu's "All Programs"?

You know, when vista came out, i really hated how it doesnt expand anymore. I think it is personal preferance on that because some people actually like the space it saves. But myself, i like the xp way too..

But, not sure if there's a tweak or not.

There are two things I really miss from XP:

1) Start menu - I like the split start menu with the recently used programs on one side and the links to documents, computer, network, etc.. on the other. But XP had this little thing called "All Programs". Clicking on it would show the programs list spread out taking up as much of the screen as it needed to show all the programs.

I am starting to get really annoyed with having all of my program folders crammed into Windows 7's little start menu and having to scroll up and down to look for something.

Is there any way to have XP's "All Programs" view functionality restored?

So I have this weird thing happening in my relatively fresh install of Windows 10.
Whenever I search for "Check for Updates" or "Windows Update settings" on the search box of the start menu, I get the results that I want but if I press enter or try to click on those results nothing happens.. As far as I know I can click all others search results but those, and maybe others related to windows update.

I can still get updates by going to Settings>Update & Security though.

In my other computers this works fine, and as far as I can tell all the updates are done.
From what I've searched around other people seemed to have a similar issue where they couldn't acess the settings at all which isn't my case. Still I tried the sfc/ scannow that a lot of users seemed to recommend but no results.

When i click a download link, i get the prompt:

Save File, Cancel...

i click save, and immediately the download will be cancelled, as i have checked in the 'download' tab (Firefox3.5)

i can click retry and it will actually download it though, (to my desktop) and as it is downloading i can see the filesize increasing, but as soon as it is done downloading, the filesize becomes 0 bytes...

also, when i right click the file, to the bottom of the properties tab, there is an "Unblock" option

more specific:
"Security: This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer. Unblock"

When i try to open the file...
"C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\ccsetup223.exe is not a valid Win32 application"

..which makes sense, the filesize of it is 0 bytes.
so, can anyone help me get rid of the Unblock thing, and fix filesize being changed to 0 bytes, and being able to install programs.

also, i have windows xp sp2, no viruses, or malware or anything

Hi all,

I'm puzzling this one. In the folder options when I choose 'view' the radio button to show the hidden files is missing. I've already checked the registry at the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced/Hidden

and everything seems ok (value for 'Type' is 'group' etc.). Using the XP tweak (Kelly's corner #155) shows the hidden files, but the button still missing.

Another thing that I encountered with was that from the start menu the "Help and Support" not working. Again, the registry seems fine, and the process is activated (started). This came up when I tried to use system restore option - with no success.

A:missing "show hidden files" button + "Help and Support" not working from start menu

Ok I found the answer (after quite a lot searching), as follows:

1. for the 'Hidden files' radio button - I used methods 1 and 2 from here-
http://www.technize.com/2007/05/13/s...s-not-working/

2. for the helpcenter I just reinstalled it as described here -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rebuildhelp.htm
note that the file 'dataspec.xml' is needed to be available for this, and it can't be done directly from the XP CD. The thing that worked for me was to insert the XP CD, and use the file that in my computer (C:\) and afterwards another file on the CD.

Again, all this happened with no virus detection, so I believe that there is no infection. However, if someone has remarks on the HiJackThis log I've put, feel free to add them.

Have a nice day,

Fitch.

Your files and folders may have been hidden by the virus, go to folder options and 'show hidden files and folder' to see if they actually are hidden. If they are, you can use Grindler's UnHide tool to 'unhide' all of your files and folders. As for the virus, move this thread to the virus and other malware removal forum in order for it to be noticed by an authorised malware removal member.
Good luck!

Greetings!

I have an XP machine which I only ever user myself (as in, there are no other users on the machine, no guest account, and it logs in without a password).

I'm trying to sort out my expansive and bloated Start Menu Programs list, but it seems that there are two separate lists. One for "Joe" (the main user account) and one for "all users", I guess because some programs give the option of installing for just one user or for everyone.

All of the programs show up in the Start Menu when I click on it, but when I go into Windows Explorer to try and sort them out, there are two separate folders;

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Start Menu\Programs

I know I can move them around in these folders (ie; putting them in related groups, such as "system tools" etc), but can I move all of them from the main user to the "all users" folder, (or vice versa) without any problems?

Thanks!

Hiya, I could use a little help resolving what should be a simple problem. It's really a long story, but to skip to the important part, I'll just recount this little tale:

I wanted to delete some files off of an old external hard drive to make space for some new stuff. It didn't matter, since the files I was deleting had been long since copied to a new drive. However, Vista, in its infinite wisdom, told me I couldn't delete the files, and it was for my own good. I politely said, "okay, Vista! Thanks for keeping me honest!"

But then I muttered, "I already have a mother" under my breath, and proceeded to go behind Vista's back and turn off User Account Control so I could delete the files anyway. Well, I knew that wasn't the best idea, so I immediately turned UAC back on afterwards, but it was too late. Vista caught me, and after the second restart, smote me with a problem I'd seen once before: nearly every program on my computer was said to have been closed after it "encountered a problem" or some nonsense, and when restarted again, the disk checker was run, found numerous problems, and did whatever it had to do to go about fixing them all.

Now I'm not sure what all that was about, because everything seems to be running okay now, save for one minor thing. That little "click" sound you get when navigating windows explorer was nowhere to be heard. I tried another restart and another disk check, b... Read more

I have Windows 7 Home Pro installed on my laptop, and I'm one of those people that likes to keep my Start Menu folder OCD-tidy.

In W7 (as I believe it was in Vista) there are two folders that handle the program shortcuts for the Start Menu. There's a user-specific one (for programs only that user can use) and the all-users one (for programs everyone can use).

C:\Users\Joe\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
and
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

I'm the only user on my laptop, so I'd like to just consolidate these two folders into one to make it easier for me to sort and keep track of. Is there any reason not to just drag-and-drop stuff from one to the other? Is there one that I should use in preference to the other (should I keep everything in the "user" folder or the "all-users" folder?

I'm pretty sure I just did this without any problem in Vista, but I wanted to make sure so I don't mess anything up as I'm new to W7.

Thanks,
Joe

You can't change the icons for files in Windows. The icon that is displayed will either be a thumbnail or the associated programs icon.

You can only change the icon of shortcuts in Windows. If you need help doing this then let me know.

You can also change the icons of programs (.exe files) with programs such as Resource Hacker:

Hi. Start menu -> I can only see shut down, or sleep, depending on how it's configured, but to access other power options I have to click on the small white arrow to the right of the power button.

So if the default setting of the big button is shutdown then it's a hassle to choose sleep because I have to click on the oh so small button arrow thing.

There's loads of room at the bottom right of my start menu so please tell me how to have a shutdown button AND a sleep button, because I frequently use both functions and don't want to have to choose only one for quick access. Cheers

Yesterday i did see something when i right clicked application(properties>security) I found something strange that there are some numbers like (S-1-5-21-1884898452........) listed there.

I have attached a screenshot along with this post to make it more clear for you guys.

Help needed.

thanks in advance

A:Showing some numbers when doing "right click>properties>security" tab

Those are totally normal Security Identifiers (SID) for various users on your computer. A SID always starts with S-1-5-21, then a unique ID, the last digits telling to what or whom the SID belongs. For instance the built-in administrator account SID ends in all versions of Windows with -500, the Guest account SID with -501, the SID for first user account created when installing Windows with -1000 or -1001 and so on. A SID ending with -5XX or -10XX is always a user profile SID.

To get a complete list of your user profile SIDs, give this command in Command Prompt:

Code:
wmic useraccount get name, sid
This lists all users showing their individual SID:

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

Hi everyone!

Now I've been trying to ask this question for a while now but I think that I am not explaining my problem correctly so I'll keep asking until I get it right. I am having problems with the "Display properties" menu on my PC. I run XP. When I try to right click on my desktop, there is a popup menu. At the bottom of that menu is "Properties". I should be able to click on this in order to change my desktop background picture but when I do so, I get nothing. The display properties window does not show up.

At first, I thought that maybe I was having problems with my video card. But then I found that I was able to change the background if I got on the internet and set an image as the background.

When I try to set an image from my "My Pictures" file as a background, it doesn't work! Nothing happens.

Also when I try to access the "Display Properties" menu there are times when I get memory address errors.
What could this be? Is this malware, system memory failure, video card failure, what?

Somebody help!

Let me start off with a description of what's happened. I purchased a new Dell laptop over the summer (running Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1) and everything was fine. But as I started to download some programs, I realized that not all of them were listed in the Start Menu's "All Programs" folder (for this example, I chose to demonstrate it with CCleaner).

I have yet to pick up a pattern as to what programs make it into "All Programs" and what programs do not. What's even weirder is what happens when I type into the Start Menu's Search Bar. When I partially type up the name of a program that is not in "All Programs", there are no results.

But when I type the name in its entirety (as in the full "CCleaner"), the program is found. However, when I try to open CCleaner from there, I get an error saying it cannot find the program's exe.

And as you can see in the window 'C', the program is definitely installed and works just fine when trying to open it.

Problem 2
"Recent" jump lists aren't working either for some programs (Microsoft Word for example). I can right-click my pinned Windows Explorer and up will come a list of "Recent" folders I've viewed. With Word, all I see listed is "Microsoft ... Read more

A:"All Programs" Start Menu Issue and Recent Items Issue

I also just realized that none of the programs I open "recently" appear in the Start Menu (and yes I have the "Privacy" options set to store and show recent files and programs).

I tried everything to solve this problem but i can't fix it.

A:I don't get the Toolbar option in Taskbar and Start Menu Properties.

What if you add a toolbar first?

The toolbar menu doesn't give you anything different to what you get by going to right-click > Toolbars menu anyway if you have that menu.

How can I remove the "Filmstrip" option from the View submenu of the right-click context menu for folders?

I've been doing a lot of troubleshooting, and something I changed a while back must have added the Filmstrip option. For a very long time, the 'Thumbnails' option was at the top, so I keep setting it to Filmstrip by mistake. I know it's not a big deal, but it is annoying, and since I never want to use Filmstrip view, I'd like to just remove the menu option completely.

Thanks.

stupid window programs adding that function to only .jpg but not other format.
no I do NOT want to know how to add those fnctions to other format, and NO I do NOT want to learn or get use to it, I want it removed PLEASE.

I used glary, it doesnt help.
I used default program editor, it doesn't show the way to remove it.
I tried using shellexview, shellmenuview, both not user friendly, cant seem to find what I want.

However I have found the registry in regedit to the rotate ones through shellviews but it won't let me make any changes. I tried giving permission so i can change it but it wont give me permission to give permission to change. when i change it says some program still running it but of course nothing is running it and ontop of all that I don't even know how or what to change.

can someone please show me how to get rid of these 2 things in the context menu, or please write a registry for me that I could just double click on it then click OKAY, and it does ALLLLLLLL the work.

thank you so very much with sugar on top + 2 hairy thumbs up.

Those "Rotate..." items are put there by Windows Photo Viewer. If you only see them with jpg files, I guess you are using another image viewer that has taken the associations for everything but jpg? You might try to add jpg to that other photo viewer's associations.

Otherwise, a quick fix is to disable Windows Photo Viewer. Navigate to:
C:\Program Files\Windows Photo Viewer\PhotoViewer.dll

Take ownership and full control of PhotoViewer.dll
Rename to PhotoViewer.dll.bak

You might like an alternate image viewer - how about FastStone Image Viewer
download link here
I recommend using the portable version.
In the settings interface, associate all your image files with FastStone and everything will open with it, and no context menu "Rotate.."

P.S. I did look for a registry or a dll-hack fix, but it is not readily apparent - maybe buried in binary code somewhere ...

I want to remove the option of ?Format? from context menu for drives. Could I get some help on how to do this?

A:Removing "Format" option from context menu for drives!

I guess it is not possible to remove/disable the "Format" option from the Context Menu for drives. The only way is to just disable the user's Context Menu.
To do that, you have to create the registry data listed below and then Sign out and Sign in.
Registry Location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \Policies\Explorer
Value: NoTrayContextMenu
Type: REG_DWORD
Options: 1=Enable 0=Disable

I've definitely looked my way around the net for this one, but alas, she's a hard one for those search engines & me to make any sense of for what I'm specifically trying to find a way to do.

I've made a few of my own context menu shortcuts (copy file path / create dir filelist /reg backup/create sys restore / toggle firewall block status / toggle hide protected system files / file+folder unblock) cuz I do a lot of things repetitively & they really make things much quicker for day2day tasking.

So basically I have 2 questions for the smart ones out there who could teach a noob like me a few things. If not teach, then just share? <3

1.) Like title says BUT without opening it; I want to skip having to go to properties of the file -> click compatibility tab -> check "Run this program as an administrator" under Privilege Level -> then click "Change settings for all users" -> to then click the box again (I know i can just click the 2nd box and skip checking the 1st, but ya kno wut i'm saying; making sure both get applied). ->clicking OK -> then clicking OK = just to make sure that particular file will always run as admin whether thru a shortcut or not.
Can I make a .bat file or must I do a wscript for that? (I can then take that & add into context menu to my preference, but not important) or maybe even a less-intrusive method? You will save my neck some sweet sweet second fractions guys!

A:Toggle "Run as Administrator" compatibility option from context menu?

Hi Arrestme, and thank you for joining Seven Forums,

And nice image there.

Those compatibility configurations are saved to the registry. Specifically to the key ofHKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
or insteadHKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
if the settings should apply for all users. Note that that second location, in HKLM, is a virtual key (a.k.a. "hidden registry key") so don't expect to be able to search it through RegEdit.

When a compatibility setting is configured on an application, the path of that executable is written to the according registry key, as a value. And the value's data contains the compatibility configuration information for that executable, in the form of a space separated list of strings, each string called a 'flag'.

The flag for configuring an application to run with administrative rights is 'RUNASADMIN'.

E.g. Instead of using the gui to set the "Run this program as an administrator" compatibility setting for all users, one could alternatively choose to run the command

Code:
reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers" /v "C:\path\to\FL.exe" /t "REG_SZ" /d "RUNASADMIN"
to succeed the same effect. (N.B., generally, writing to the HKLM hive requires local administrative rights, so an elevated command prompt would be needed.)

I double-click and get "search" instead of "open"--only when I click a disk, like Hard Drive C: or Floppy A: or CD F: and so on.

It didn't used to do this, so I must've inadvertently changed some setting somewhere, but darned if I can find it now.

After privacy protection installed itself I no longer have a desktop. The task bar is still on the screen as well as the start menu. But when I click on the start menu there is nothing on it. The only programs that are running are " privacy protection", "windows security center", and "XP anti-virus 2012". All three of these are running completely by themselves and I never installed or downloaded any of them. I cannot get on the internet or do anything with my computer. I know that privacy protection and XP anti-virus 2012 are fake virus protection but when my computer was still somewhat functional, these programs did not allow me to run anything which made it hard to fight it off. I have some really important stuff on my computer and I would hate to lose it all.

I just saw this on a new HP laptop I am working on, it actually makes a kind of Program Menu, so if you don't want a full Start Menu like Windows 7, you can use this to just have links to your Programs:

The HP Quick Start Application (Windows 8) | HP? Support
Installation Causes a reboot so unless you are ready to reboot, don't install it.

It takes a few minutes to populate the Program Links trhe first time it is run, after that it pops up quick and it can be added to Startup Programs.

A:HP's "Quickstart" acts as a "Start Menu"

Looks good.

Yep. It is designed to be a start menu, I've seen it in action. They've made it to add missing start menu functionality back to W8. This is a strategy by HP to accommodate more 'classic' users with the new OS. I think other manufacturers may use similar programs.

Why would the MS Word menu bar be visible, but be missing the "edit" option? I've tried moving the bar around, resizing it, etc. I've also looked at the menu bar with a blank document, a new document, an old document and no document. There's no "edit" option on the menu bar.

A:Word menu bar missing "edit" option

Right-click the menu bar, hit Customize.
Choose the Toolbars tab.
Scroll down and pick Menu Bar (don't uncheck it, just highlight it).
Hit the Reset button.
Hit Ok.
Hit Close.

If it doesn't work, go to www.theofficeexperts.com/word.htm and click on the "Lost toolbars" link. Follow the instructions there.

I'm not sure what I did.. few days ago.. in my half sleep I was trying to delete few files using Shift+Del .. but my mistake it looks like I deleted or removed the Desktop option from the left menu or Hierarchy tree (don't know what exactly to call it), as it got selected some how.

just a screenshot, hopefully this gives a better explanation than my wording:

I'm unable to see the option in the drop down address bar either. I've been forced to open Desktop using "Show The Desktop" option.

Is there a way I can get the desktop option in the Hierarchy Tree somehow ?

*sorry for the bad english

A:Missing "Desktop" option in the left menu

Open your user folder and just drag the Desktop folder over to the navigation pane under favorites.

I have a Gateway p-7811fx laptop with vista 64 and keep having this problem with a right click menu pop up on programs like winamp, opera and hardware configuration. On certain programs a right click menu will pop up non stop and i cant use the program at all. The laptop keyboard doesnt work after I spilt coke on the keyboard so I use a usb keyboard. After that it started having this popup menu or key mapping issues with emulators. For some emulator programs it will automatically map a button called AppKey and i cant configure buttons with a usb to psx converted joypad on them. This also happened on other programs that i used but probably forgot about them and deleted them.

I tried looking up everything i could to disable a right click menu or appkey but couldnt find anything. Tried deleting a window key registry(all i could find looking up appkey disabling in vista). Tried disabling the touchpad. I don't think its any kind of virus or spyware, i never detect anything.

i had pictures of what happens but i need more posts so i cant show them.

In Window 7 and earlier versions, one could right-click an item in the start menu, select properties and access the shortcut tab. Therein lay the Short key field, which I used a lot for creating custom key combinations, eg CTL+ALT+N for Notepad++ or CTL+ALT+P for Paint.NET.

In Windows 10, the start menu seems to treat all items as Apps and right-click brings up a minimal menu, which doesn't include properties.

Ideas/suggestions please for creating customer key-combo shortcuts to programs or getting back the functionality of Windows 7 start menu Right-Click>Properties>Shortcut key.

I have a bizarre problem that I can't seem to solve. I looked all over the internet for solutions, but can't find any.

My problem is that when I right-click on Mp3 files, the pop-up menu shows "Edit Song Information" as the default command for Mp3 files. The default command should be "Play In Winamp".

I've looked for a command in Winamp to change the default command back with no success. I've checked the Mp3 info in Folder Options > View File Types and the "Play In Winamp" command IS set as the default.

One of my other programs must be causing the problem. I have the following audio programs or codecs installed.

Winamp 5.52
Windows Media Player 10
VLC Media Player
iTunes (I don't really use it except for m4b files)
Roxio Easy Media Creator 9
RealPlayer 10.5
K-Lite Codec Pack 3.7.0
G-Spot 2.21
Quicktime Player 7.4

Does anyone know how to get "Edit Song Information" removed as the default command for my Mp3s and what program might be causing it?
