I'm currently deleting a 30 gig folder containing many folders of music. It's taking a while. no problem there. however, about every 30 second a prompt comes up saying "this folder is shared with other people if you delete it it will no longer be shared" and i have to click continue. I just want to let all those files be deleted withut having to click continue every 30 seconds. Help Please. Thanks in advance

Somehow my "Shared Documents" Folder got renamed to "Documents" when setting up my wireless network. Now when I am unable to install some software because that file name is missing.
I am not able to rename the "Documents" folder because I get the error that it is a system folder and cannot be renamed. Please help.

A:Unable To Rename "Documents" Folder To Original Name "Shared Documents"

You can change the share name over the network. My machine does the same thing.

When you click 'Share this Folder over the network' you are given the option to name the share. It will warn you that if it is over 12 chars, then older machines on the network may not be able to see it etc etc. Ok this and then check that the shared documents folder appears as such on the machine you wish to access with.

Bear in mind you folder will be showing in your 'Network Folders' as 'Documents on {computername} ({computername}). Can you not just point to this folder on the second machine instead?

On both 64Bit & 32Bit Win7 machines I get an error message, denying access to a file in a folder within another folder. All have been shared, permissions granted & drives mapped to each folder. That is in addition to initially applying the changes to the file folder, subfolders, and files.

The message comes after the Client machine accesses the program, and attempts to generate a pdf.

The 64 is Win7-Win7 connection, while the 32 is connected to an XP.
Initially, I thought it to be a 64 issue. However, now it seems to be a Win7.
I have set to the Program to Run As Administrator & changed the Compatibility to XP Service Pack 3 to no avail.

I am moments away from Control+Alt+45ACP.

I hope I figure out W7 soon...

I upgraded my wife's office to twp HP W7 systems this past fall, wireless networked through belkin router. Old files used to be on wife's PC now in folder called "H Docs (old PC)" in her public folder. Shared to everybody. This was working up to yesterday.

Today, on the second PC, her associate opened a folder nested in the main "H Docs (old PC)" folder. Everything appeared to be there. She needed to get a phone number from another file located somewhere else, so she closed the folder while she got it. Came back to the folder - opened it - "this folder appears to be empty" or like that. Closed the folder and opened another - also empty. Back a couple of folders out, selects another folder, opens it and every thing's there. Closed completely out, rebooted - the same. Calls me in.

I go through much the same, checking paths, checking whether access has been changed - can't find a reason for this. Checked the folder on wife's PC to be sure there's anything there to share - it's all there, thank goodness.

I'm not at her office now, so can't answer much more about exact conditions, but would appreciate a nudge in the right direction. We're not using "home group" for this. On the left side of the explorer window, I go to network and chase down the path to the folder. If I logon with my admin account, I got an access denied once, got through to the folders in q... I had a small network up and running that I set up awhile back. I formatted & reloaded 2 of the machines (both running WinXP Home SP2). On the laptop, "My Network Places" shows it's shared folder and the "MSHome" network. The PC shows the network in "Create a network place" but doesn't see the shared folder.
Tried everything I can think of... cancelling and resetting the folder to share, adding another folder..., nothing.
Why doesn't my the shared folder appear in the "My Network Places" folder? Any suggestions?

I have my Public Desktop folder set to share for everyone, so it can be accessed from other pc's on the home network. But when I move a file from my user desktop to the public desktop it suddenly adds the lock icon over it and can't be accessed from another pc, even though the public desktop still can. I have to change the permissions on the file every time, although this never used to be the case. I used to be able to move a file to the public desktop without having to manually "share" it each time.

All settings look correct: Sharing is enabled for the folder and set for full control "everyone", and public folder sharing is turned on.

Again, this just started and was working fine before. Would one of the recent security patches have changed something?

A:Files moved to shared public folder "locked"

I'm not sure how this could occur but in order for the Public folders to be shared you need to enable sharing through the Sharing tab of the main Public folder, otherwise anything placed in one of it's subfolders won't be sharable.

If the share is being moved from a folder with a lock then moving that folder to a Public folder won't remove the lock.

The main Public folder is located at the C:\Users\Public and should appear like the picture.

Hi all,

I'm having a weird issue with one computer here.
The "My Documents" folder is redirected to a shared network drive. Other people can access the files in that folder and edit them.

The weird thing is that the "local copy" of the file does not seem to match the one the other users on the network can see.

For example, I have this Excel spreadsheet. Another user on the network made a change to the file. In my documents, the file size and modification date do not match the new state, and if I open the file, it does not contain the changes. Everybody else on the network sees the changes just fine.

If I make changes to the file, the others cannot see them, however they do see ".tmp" files, which I don't see on my machine.

I have turned offline availability off, to try and make sure there is no local cache of the file, I have tried "sync-ing" the folder, restarted my machine... all to no avail
Seems to me there is a different copy somewhere but I can't find it.

There is no "My Documents" folder left under "c:\Users\<MyUsername>\". We are on a workgroup (as opposed to a domain).

Any pointers welcome!

Thanks,

Bourgui

Skipping why and how, I need help, please!!!

I dragged the "My Documents" folder into the Shared Folders folder, and renamed it "New My Documents".

Well, now I want to un-share(or delete the "New My Documents" folder) but I cannot because I get an error saying 'is a Windows system folded and Windows requires it to run properly'. The thing is, the New and original My Documents folders are mirrors, meaning if I delete something from one, it deletes it from the other.

I cannot un-check the sharing box, or anything like that.

I am trying to access files in a shared folder on my Vista PC from my XP laptop, through my wireless home network, but when I go to open a file (e.g., Word Document) it opens as "Read-Only". I noticed the shared folder on the Vista PC has the "read-only" attribute selected on its properties. I've tried unselecting the attribute, but it reverts to "read-only" every time I do this. The folder I'm sharing is the "Documents" folder on the Vista PC. All of the files I want to access from the XP laptop are in this folder and I don't want to bother with moving them to the "Public" folder in Vista.

Is it even possible to do what I'm trying to do? That is, access files on the Vista PC from the XP laptop through a wireless home network, and be able to make changes to the documents so they save on the Vista PC?

I have followed several step-by-step guides on file, folder, and printer sharing in Vista, and have changed all the permissions to make sure I'm able to access the shared folder from the XP laptop. I've changed the firewall settings on Norton 360, but that hasn't helped either. I've also installed the LLTD responder hotfix on the XP.

Both computers belong to the same workgroup and the network is set to "Private".

Note: I'm not getting any error messages when accessing the shared folder. The shared printing is working fine without any problems.

Hi i'm no expert on this topic by any means, and i hope someone else can come along with a better explanation than i can, but it seems to me that your system (network) is treating the xp laptop as a 'slave' which can access but not alter data on the main pc, i would check to see if there are any settings that might apply to this, or maybe (just a guess) you may have to sign on as administrator on your xp laptop. like i say it's really not my field but hey, you can give it a go for what it's worth. sorry i can't be of much more help to you.

I used to share folders without problems on this W7SP1Ult64 with an XP32Pro machine.
Not anymore.
I can't imagine why. All I did recently was swapping a slowly failing (not system) 1TB HDD for a 2TB HDD. Then I played around with partition letters.
Now no matter what I do, no matter where: Your folder can't be shared.

I tried everything shown in: Your Folder Can't Be Shared Error Message in Windows 7 - YouTube
Actually, I didn't have to do anything except for: I believe DHCP Client (maybe one of the others listed) was on manual, so I switched it to automatic.
Your folder can't be shared.
I did not install a virtual machine nor am I aware of doing so in the past.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

A:After months of smooth sharing "Your folder can't be shared."

I have the opposite problem and do not want to share but am unable to turn that off even with admin rights.

Maybe a program that was recently installed made changes.

Hello everybody!

Have anyone of you guys tried to shared a folder with windows 7 ? , have you noticed that the "two lil persons" (it used to be a hand before) icon that was added to the folder when you complete the sharing process doesn't come up?

it's very annoying for me because If I have 50 folders I cannot visualize which one has been shared at a glance.

the thing that scares me the most is that is the final version or maybe the activation process broke up some resources, I will try sharing a folder without activating it.

Thanks everybody

A:Shared Folder "two little persons" icon

You have to click the folder icon and it shows you the two people at the bottom of the window. I guess you know that though.
You can change the icon for the folder manually, not ideal though.
I hope someone does come up with a way to get the icon to change automatically.

If you go in to network and select your PC it does show you all the shared folders. Maybe that will help if you are going to change the icons.

Hey guys,

this has been driving me nuts for the past few days trying to figure this out.

I am trying to share a folder off my external hard drive that is connected to my laptop with my Desktop PC.

Both computers are connected to the Homegroup and are seen on my network with no problems finding them.

Now every time I click on the folder that is on the laptop from my Desktop it gives me this error:

I have read around and see that I need to edit my permissions and I have done so for my laptop and I have given my PC full control over the folder but I just doesn't connect and gives the error every time.

The only folder on my Laptop I can access from my PC is the "Users" folder...

I don't know why this keeps happening and I'm going crazy here trying to figure it out.

Please, any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

EDIT: I GOT IT! for some reason the permisson "Everyone" wasn't included in the folders I wanted to join... My life is complete now

I recently found a "Shared" folder in MY DOWNLOADS folder which blinks between being selectable and dissapering. When I manage to double click it, it shows an innumberable number of zip folder for all kinds of programs and files that you can imagine. I obviously did not put this there.

Also, my P2P program (bearshare) started turning itself on randomly, and would perpetually turn back on once exited.

I have ran virus scans (avast antivirus), spyware scans (spybot S&D) and deleted all of the files inside of the MY DOWNLOADS folder. I've even managed to delete the "Shared" folder and empty recycle bin but it always comes back.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be or how to get rid of it? If not do you know anywhere that would? All help is appreciated!

Hi ,
I have a problem with my laptop. I am not really good at computers - not familiar with what files are important and what not. Here's my situation: By mistake, I went to "AppData" folder by viewing Hidden Files. I was coming out of the folder by pressing "BackSpace" to go back, and pressed "Delete" key. My recycle bin is empty and all my .exe files have turned to .lnk files. I can't open any Icons and all the programs are running in a notepad file. I looked online and downloaded a software called "Recuva" to recover files. It recovered a lot of files with weird names - that I don't acknowledge. My icons are still in .lnk style, and it seems to me that those recovered files are useless. I tried to run System Backup but it doesn't let me; and neither does Repair Install. I don't want to lose any of my files and data, and do not wish to create another Administrator. Please help!

start.run type Msconfig there should be a start up tab there you will find a list of things that start when windows starts; untick the offending program. Don't untick anything you are not sure about.
Alternatively C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup remove any shortcuts to programs.
Programs can also be started from within the windows registry. Please pm me if the problem persists.

I broke one of the "feet" on my old E-Machines PS/2 keyboard I have used for years and like. I also use one at work that's pretty close to the same layout. I am looking everywhere for a keyboard with a large "enter" and "backspace" I can't find one. I don't care if it's USB or PS/2 but hate the "flat" type that ship with computers these days you look at the key to hard and it presses. I have HUGE hands and like the "old style" keyboard that you have to press pretty hard on the keys (like an actual spring under them) Do any of you know of a specialty keyboard shop or somewhere else with a big selection? I have looked all over the internet on the "major" places. (i.e. Newegg, TigerDirect, BestBuy, Wal-Mart, etc...)

If anyone knows of a place that has "old style" keyboards please let me know. I may have to settle but for such a small purchase that I use so much, I'd like to get what I want and I can't be the only one with massive hands having these same issues. The world isn't made for us big guys.

I recently had to reinstall Windows XP on my laptop and it created a folder called My Backup. I got everything that I need out of this backup and put it back in the original place but the folder is still taking up almost a gig and a half of hard drive space. But it wont let me delete it. Every time I try to a window pops up saying cannot delete AcroIEHelper.dll. I've deleted every single file and folder not containing this file within the backup folder that can be deleted. There are a couple of other files that make the same message pop up if you try to delete them. Each of these files is only a couple hundred KB at most so why does the folder take up over a GB? Does anyone know how to get rid of this folder?

A:deleting "My Backup" folder

sshake1,

That error message indicates that Windows is running software installed in that backup folder or the files are set as read-only. The file you mentioned is a component of Adobe Acrobat Reader. You may want to uninstall Acrobat reader BEFORE you delete that folder.

To remove that folder, boot up in Safe Mode (Press & Hold F8 Key BEFORE windows starts to boot) pick Safe Mode, open up windows explorer or my computer, C:, browse to that folder and delete it. This should work.

Anyone tried deleting a registry key in Windows 7?  Got "access denied" or "Error while deleting key"?
The usual response is, "You need to run regedit as an administrator".  but I *AM* logged in as Administrator, and running regedit as administrator, trying to assign administrator full permissions on that registry key in order to delete it!!
Am I mistaken, or isn't Administrator supposed to be able to administer and control all the settings on the computer, in order to set it up for the "Average Joe" user?
So, under the permissions menu of that key, go to advanced, change the owner from System to Administrator, and try again.  It's no longer saying "access denied", but "Cannot delete xxxxxx. Error while deleting key".

The scenario: Basically, the wireless has stopped working on a laptop. The device does not show up in Device Manager, but is in the registry, so the normal procedure is to delete the registry entry for the device in HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet (and /ControlSet001) /Enum/PCI    ,then attach the device or restart the computer, it finds the "new" hardware and reinstalls it. Easy!...

Not with permission restrictions on the administrator account it's not!  So I need to give myself permission, to give myself permission, to do a simple task like delete a single registry key!  Why, Microsoft, why???!!!  Please just make the Administrator accoun... Read more

Hello everyone.

I'm new here so I hope I'm doing everything the way it is supposed to be done.
For starters I have first used the "Search" function, however this didn't lead me to a solution of my problem.

Problem:
Some text appears as Extra Large even though Font size (under Appearance) is set to "Normal".

Please have a look at the screenshot (attached) as it is quite hard to describe whats going on.

Important to note is that the installation of "StyleXP" and the applying of the "Panther" Theme has been done AFTER this problem occurred so I don't think there is a relationship there.

The problem is also not limited to the "Epson Scan" program (seen in the screenshot) I just used it as an example.

It often happens in "Program Menus" and "Dropdown lists", and only within the OS, not inside any browsers (Firefox or IE).

The OS works fine except for this issue.
I'd really appreciate any help regarding this problem.

Maybe there is a way to fix this in the registry?

Kind regards and thanks for reading.

We are a small company.  We are running six windows 8 computers.  Our secretary works from home, the rest of us are in the same office.

The Admin Computer stores all of our work files within a folder called 'casework' (about 400GB).   The 'casework' folder is shared on the office network.  This 'casework' folder is also synced by Google Drive.

When our secretary works on her home computer and makes a new file, e.g. letterV2, the new file downloads to our 'casework' folder to the Admin Computer here at the office.  However, the new file cannot been seen on our other computers over the office
network.

The newly created files are not shared to 'everyone' unless I un-share 'casework' from the network and then share 'casework' again.

The problem seems to be that the new files added by Google Drive are not inheriting the permissions of the 'casework' folder.

There are no options to change in Google Drive.  Is this a Windows8 problem? Will Windows10 have a fix for this? Are there any work arounds? Does our secretary need to work at the office?

Yours Hopefully

Matt

You can proof that there is no issue for sharing folder within your office network
I think that's not how online share drive work, unless your secretary can join your office network trough internet
http://www.howtogeek.com/196435/how-to-share-files-and-folders-from-your-cloud-storage-folder/
this is the example, you can ask your secretary to send file trough share drive and assign 1 admin to sync and send it to your case work folder

I am using Windows XP Home SP2 and IE 6.0 .

When I do a Spyware Audit using Earthlink's Spyware Audit Program, it shows two spyware present, identified as: (1) "a7c44 Research in Progress" (2) "SearchSquire" . They only show up when using the "Earthlink Spyware Audit". I have scanned using the following most updated Spyware Scans on their most extensive in-depth levels of Scan: Earthlink, Ad-aware 6.0, Spybot S&D (1.3), TDS-3, Adware Away, Panda and neither of the two spyware have shown in their results. Microsoft level 2 technicians have not been able to rid these two spyware and says that the spywares are false positives.

Hi,

I have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons...

This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct. Any help much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello Aster, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened may be able to fix it.

Hope this helps,

I am buying a "MSI P965 Platinum LGA 775" motherboard and Iam confused which Processor to buy.
Which of the two Processors work with it?
The Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 1.8GHz:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115013

And the:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115017

If both is accepted from the motherboard,I already know that the Quad Q6600 is better, but is it going to be such a big difference in performance to choose it. it is almost 600$ difference.
Thank you

One shares the level 2 cache on the CPU and the other has 2 different 4MB 2 level cache on the CPU. This one I would go with. Think of these caches as a buffering to and from the CPU thus speeding up the processing power.

If you got the money get the Quad Core one is going to be faster and better than Dual Core...

I'm having a problem with Windows Explorer. Every time I connect a removable drive, the Folders panel displays a duplicate set of "Shared Documents, <username>'s Documents, and 2 other entries." It even happens when I plug in my phone to charge through the USB port. Basically, it happens when something is connected in the USB port, card reader, removable drive, ect. Please look at my screen shot and you will understand.
I think it has something to do with a Motorola driver I recently uninstalled, but I don't remember which one.
I am using WinXP Pro.

It seems I can't post images.

I added a slave drive to my Windows XP Pro computer, and it appears to work properly.

However, when I open the "Documents and Settings" folder (on the slave drive E:\, which is Windows XP Home Edition -- not XP Pro), I do not see any of my documents, sub-folders, etc. There should be MANY sub-folders (inside the "My Documents" folder which isn't even visible), with hundreds of documents, jpgs, etc. within it.

When that drive is installed as the Primary drive in my other computer, the User "Larry" (which is me) has all Administrative privileges. On the computer that I'm running now (with the slave drive in it), I also have Administrator privileges. I own both computers.

My User Name "Larry" is password-protected when I login to Windows (when the drive is Primary and installed into my main computer (not this computer with XP Pro).

I've tried clicking on all the users; Administrator, Default User, Larry, Guest, etc. (Note: I get an "Access Denied" error when clicking on the Guest "Documents and Settings" folder).

So, the questions are:

1. Why can't I see any files or subdirectories in the "Documents and Settings" folder on the slave drive?

2. There's supposed to be a folder named "My Documents," but I can't find it. Normally, that path is "C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents".

In other words I can't find my personal saved documents, "my document" folder , recycle bin and all other programs.

Your files and folders may have been hidden by the virus, go to folder options and 'show hidden files and folder' to see if they actually are hidden. If they are, you can use Grindler's UnHide tool to 'unhide' all of your files and folders. As for the virus, move this thread to the virus and other malware removal forum in order for it to be noticed by an authorised malware removal member.
Good luck!

Outlook 2003:I'm a massive fan of outlooks Search folders, I receive in excess of 400 emails per day, of which approximately 250 need my attention, even if to reply back and give someone an answer.

A problem I find is that I am so busy with my emails, I often need to clean out my inbox. I do this by setting up basic search folders such as "all emails from my team which are in my inbox only" or "any email sent to me which was part of a distribution list in my inbox only" etc...

This is great for filtering my mail and I would like to create a rule as such:

"All mail within my inbox which has been either replied to forwarded by myself".

I can't seem to find any options and I'm hoping an Outlook guru can help

If you don't know the answer, can you try googling it for me to see if you can find anything, loads of heads are better one...

Not a major issue, of course, purely cosmetic, but still a minor annoyance none-the-less:

I have a number of card reader drives that I never use (haven't even removed that plastic cover tape from them to help keep the dust out) that show when viewing the "Computer" window that displays drives. Is there any way to hide specific unused drivers from this view? Not remove drive entirely, of course, I may need to use one in the future, but just to hide them so they aren't visible, until I may chose to make them visible again?

Thanks as always,

Russell

You could check Hide empty drives in the Computer folder in Folder Options to have them stay hidden until you insert a card. When a card is inserted, the drive will display in Computer.

Afternoon, I'm a bit boggled by this issue we are having on a PC at our office. It seems that the PC normally will boot up and the memory usage will be low 2 GB / 16 GB until 10-12 minutes go by then it shoots up 11 GB / 16 GB. It's really odd and I can't explain it, since no applications are started.

I took it upon myself and downloaded RamMap. Using RamMap I was able to determine that the memory is caused by "mapped files" under "file summary" I can see the two large files which are to blame. But I'm not able delete these currently until tomorrow to confirm the user doesn't need them.

What I'm looking for is an answer as to why these files seem to be singled out? Thanks in advance. I've included a screenshot to the RamMap findings and my understanding with how memory is handled is limited.

EDIT - I can see now only 1 large file is being selected for "mapped file".

Hi All, Happy New Year!

First time posting... On 1/3/08 i ended up with a bunch of viruses on my computer. From what I can gather they are bad news. I down loaded PC Tools to do a search and found a bunch of Trojans and other nasties...

I have uploaded a screen shot of the PC Tools scan...

In the "C:\Program Files\Video Add On" folder the following can't be deleted:
icmtr.dll
icthis
isfmdl.dll
isfmm
isfmntr

In the "C:\Program Files\Helper" folder the following was found:
turbosearchsite.dll e404 Module

What is this? Do I need the file in Helper?

Please help!

PS: I am not a techno savvy guy. I kinda know what is going on but only enough to get myself into trouble and not be able to get out! I tried a few things to get rid of them but was unsuccessful.

From what I have seen I will be here for a bit. Thanks in advance.

Please read completely before responding.
I am a 30 year IT pro, most of it as a programmer. I am the geek in charge of a tech non profit org in Hawaii. www.HawaiianHope.org
so yea.. i have at least half a clue.

Here is the deal.
In doing drive copies, data recoveries, etc... when we are moving a mass amount of data from one drive to another we run into this problem a lot.
"Error moving file or folder" -- "directory is not empty"
If you restart the move, it will continue on and keep going, restart enough times and eventually it will move all directories.

I think its a programming issue with windows and wonder if anyone has a work around ?

I have a suspicion that the copy process is getting out of sequence. That it is trying to move a folder before it actually emptied it. Possibilities are :
1) windows forgot its place in moving through and navigating numerous sub directories and it is having a problem with “recursive calls.”
2) Computers with hyper threading or dual core processors are spawning the movement of files across multiple processes, and some are getting ahead of the other.
3) It did actually move the file, but the cache or something in memory has not updated, or the full data write has not completed yet before it tried to move the directory. (delayed write)
Yes, you can copy and then delete the old... Read more

A:"Error moving file or folder" -- "directory is not empty"

This is a known issue. It is by design.

As you may know, moving is in its essence an unsafe process. It would be better to use the actual sequence of copy and then delete.

HI, first of all, I found out that my home computer was infected by the lovelorn worm. Plan to clean that tonight.

Secondly, I found copies of 2 files named "folder" and "desktop" in almost all folders. The files where identical so I suspect that there is a virus that's propagating this. Is my hunch correct? Is this related to the lovelorn virus or is it another kind? What should I do?

Thanks!!!

i used the "like flash disc" method formatting it
then went on deleting, moving & renaming image folders..
i think that was wrong to do..
anyway
when i started the burn process it stopped responding after several minutes..
i had to force restart the machine to eject disc..
then i discovered a specific folder i put in the image is very big in size..
checked it and found the windows has created system files and folders in it
AppData, Temp, Microsoft, ..etc
it couldnt be deleted the easy way
used Unlocker, could just delete few folders then the machine stops responding..
and this repeated useless several times..
used the Safe Mode With Command: RD /S.. it deleted the folder..
but after restart windows normally the folder is still there and keeps creating system stuff..
some programs started using this location to run, like Chrome..
i discovered i lost all my history and cookies and had to reinstall it and its still sticking to the Burn Folder's infected folder..
the folder is growing fast.. i have to to wipe it using command and reinstall Chrome again and again..

OK. This is complicated; please be patient. Some months ago my PC (Win7 Ultimate x64) suddenly came up with the dreaded "BOOTMGR missing...press CTRL+ALT+DEL to continue..." error message. No idea what caused this; the OS had been operating flawlessly for almost a year. Anyway, I tried using a "Windows 7 Recovery Disc" which I had burned from an .iso file downloaded ages ago. After several unsuccessful attempts to fix the problem with the Recovery Disc, I gave up in frustration and rebooted from the Win7 installation DVD. It of course told me there was an existing Win7 OS on the machine; did I wish to update/overwrite that or install a NEW copy of the OS? I chose "new copy" and installed it. This fixed the problem, of course. Once I was certain all was working (several days later), I used Win7's "BOOTMGR" utility to DELETE this second, unnecessary version of the OS. All still worked fine, but it "shrunk" drive D: and left an "UNUSED" area on the drive (according to the DISKMGR tool). I don't remember the drive letter the install routine created. Anyway, I could not "extend" D: or get back the wasted HD space no matter what I tried. Naturally, in the process I stupidly screwed up something and was back to the "BOOTMGR missing..." situation. I used this "hide a folder" program called "folder lock," and I guess it's buggy because it won't let me unhide the files. It unhides the folder containing the files, but the files are still hidden. They're still there, because when I copy and paste the folder, it shows that the files are being copied, but in the new folder they will be hidden again. Checking the "property" of the folder shows the correct size as well. How can I get windows to reveal them?

The hidden files are listed in this folder called "n|+|-n" or something like that I think, but when I type that in dos or windows it won't let me access them.

PS I contacted the company, but I don't expect a response back any time soon and those files are kind of important.

Thanks!

A:How to "unhide" a folder hidden by a "hidefolder" utility?

Welcome to TSG....

And of course you did not or don't have any backups of these files on any other media?

Actually the only way to gain access to these files is by contacting the manufacturer of the security program ir you would have to learn how to program good enough to bew able to get into the secure area. To the best of my knowledge since this is a security thing and we have no way of knowing whether or not you actually have the rights to get into these files I doubt if you will get much direction toward solving your problem.

Go with contacting the manufacturer of the software.

I have a home network of five computers where one acts as a common computer ("server") where most data from the other four computers is stored (music, pictures, word processing, movies, etc). All five are running XP Pro SP2.

The "server" had two 80GB hard drives, but SMART was indicating that one was failing, so I replaced it with a 200GB drive. Now, every computer in the house can access the 80GB drive and all of its files but none of the computers in the house (except the "server") can access the new hard drive. I have the file sharing set to full access, and I can view the file folders that are on the drive from the networked computers, they are all listed. But when I click on a folder, I get "Access is Denied." When I mouse over a folder, it reads, "Folder is Empty"

But the folder isn't empty though when accessed from the local computer, only when trying to access it over the network.

I have turned off the Windows Firewall, turned it on again, off again, etc, no change. I have Zone Alarm on all the computers, turned it off, still no change.

Any ideas??? I have over 500 CDs on that harddrive, and I want to listen to music from my other comuters! I'm going nuts here.

1. From a computer other than the server right-click "My Computer" and choose "Map Network Drive". Where is says "Folder" type "\\<ip address>\C$" if you want to share the C partition of that drive (don't type the quotes).
2.
Go to My Computer and and click on the Tools Menu and then Folder Options.

Click the view tab.
Scroll all the way down until you see "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)" and uncheck it.
Click OK.

Now right-click the drive you want to share and choose "Sharing and Security".
Click the security tab.
Click "add" and add "Everyone".
Give "Everyone" the rights you want them to have "Read only" or whatever you want.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

Ok, I've hit a bit of a snag that's coming up every once in a while.

We have a list of ~10,000 clients. When the unique ID No. is entered, it brings up basic information on that client, name, other general details, things like that.

Now the snag is that we then use a macro to save that sheet after info has been entered, and it works by putting the folder as the current month and year if that folder does not exist, then naming the sheet as the client name.

This works all fine, however if the client has been called say "koala house - Van Morrison T/As", then VBA will try and place it in a folder that doesn't exist and crash.

Is there a macro that I could use to go through that list of clients and delete all / \ from their names?

Cheers,

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I am running Windows 7 in 32 bit mode. When I go to create a folder in documents or on the desktop I right click and select "New". This opens a dialog list of functions. Everything is there but "Folder". What am I missing? Is there a Windows update missing? Is this normal for Windows 7???? There is a box at the top of the Documents page that says New Folder. When I select this box nothing happens?????? Where do New Folders go????

A:"Folder" does not appear in the dialog list when selecting "New"

The menu you are talking to is called the "Shell Context Menu", there is not a built in windows feature to change the contents of this Menu as it is generated from the registry.

go to NirSoft - freeware utilities: password recovery, system utilities, desktop utilities and get "ShellMenuView" and/or "ShellExView" which provides a simple interface for viewing and editing entries on this menu. The tools do not need to be installed, you just run them!

Hello all,
I have seen posts about this problem but was unable to find an answer. I am running Firefox 3.6.17 on Windows 7 Pro 64x. When downloading files from the Internet I am unable to "Open" or "Open the containing folder", in other words I can't get to the download. I am running the free version of Zone Alarm and use free AVG anti-virus. I don't recall changing anything in those programs recently. It seems like all the sudden I am not able to download content any longer. It has worked fine in the past. This is a homebuilt machine. What would be the things to try, either in the antivirus or firewall if there were setting changes made there? Barring that are there any other things I could try?
Thanks in advance for all the help.

I made a similar thread about this named "How to hide the favorites folder?" and they got confused and thought I was talking about the favorites category, when I was not. I was talking about the favorites folder in the User folder. Now I'm making this thread more in-depth so people don't once again, get confused.

So I am looking for a way to kill/delete the stupid pesky folders in the user folder named "Favorites" and "Searches" forever. Now I've read in a lot of other (unsuccessful) threads across Google and people usually just come up with the reply of "Why would you want to delete them? There great folders for saving your favorite websites and searches!" Well not everybody thinks alike. I know there has to be a way to delete these two folders forever. Someone has to of someway to do this. Whether it be from editing System files to a third-party program (which I would not want to really use though).

Now as of hiding, it does NOT work me considering my user-folder is in the left navigation pane with those two folders showing, but hidden in the actual user folder (example below).

So if anybody can help me on getting rid of these two irritating folders, it would be GREATLY appreciated. I cannot stress that enough. Thank you though for reading this and if you know of ANY way of deleting them, please post it.

When I click on "tools" on the menu bar in any folder that I am exploring and subsequently click on "folder options" I notice that the "view" tab is completely missing. The only tab I have access to is "file types"

This creates a serious problem when dealing with hidden folders that were hidden prior to me having knowledge of this "view" feature being absent.

What are my options to restore this "view" tab so that I can view the hidden files that I need access to?

TIA

A:"View Tab" in "Folder Options" missing

Other than a system restore, I don't know how to restore the view tab. I can tell you how to enable the hidden files and folders from the registry.
Start> Run> type: regedit and hit OK. Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
Advanced
Click on Advanced folder in the left pane and look for Hidden in the right panel. Set the value to 1 to show and 2 to hide.
If not there, create DWORD value with Value name: Hidden and set the value as above.

Edit: Forgot to add, you need to restart computer for settings to be changed.

I have a problem with one of my vista accounts' picture folder. When saving to "my pictures", I went back to my "user" folder to find the pictures folder... but the picture I saved was actually saved to what appears to be a 'false' recycle bin; Only, this 'recycle bin' does not behave like the actual recycle bin, since I can browse and even open photos from within it, and it also does not have the "restore" option... When I try to change the name of the "recycle bin" folder to "pictures" (from the properties window) it says that there is already a folder with the name 'pictures', but then refers to the same 'recycle bin' with my photos. How could this have happened? How do we get the folder to return to the normal "pictures" appearance? It's as if part of the software thinks that it's the pictures folder, and part thinks it's (somehow??) the recycle bin (based on its appearance). Thank you.

A:Pictures folder appears to be "recycle bin" but still behaves like "pictures" folder.

Hello,
I am getting the following error when moving files on the same drive or from one to another:

"Error Moving File or Folder
Cannot remove folder (insert folder name here): The directory is not empty."

This is fairly common (once or twice a month) and it occurs usually with folders containing many subfolders when being moved by explorer gui "Move the selected items", or ctrl-x, ctrl-v . Repeated attempts through the same process seems to move the folders, but the errors increase as the concentration of stubborn folders increases.

There are no event viewer logs corresponding to these errors. (eventvwr.msc: system, or application)

I would have thought this would be a common problem, but extensive searches came up with nothing... so either it is rare, untroubling to others, extremely easy to fix, or my search queries suck. =)
I am going to run Checkdisk to make sure all is well there, and I will repost the likely failure.

A:"Error moving file or folder" "directory is not empty" one file left

Occasionally when I am deleting a file, it is difficult, I have to go through process explorer, search for the thread that is strangely(?) associated with that file in explorer (no reasonable dependencies could be linked, nor is the file being viewed), and kill the thread before deletion.

any thoughts?

Thanks =)

Hello r cam, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You could use OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to restore the default folders and their default locations.User Folders - Restore Default Location
You might consider this below instead to be able to access the files from your libraries with the files actually located where you like. This way you will not have to worry about any potential issues, as you found out the hard way, that could happen when moving user folder locations. Create a new folder at any location you want.
Move any files you want into the new folder.
Include the new folder into a library of your choice.
If you like, you can also set the new folder to be the default "save" to location for the library as well.
Hope this helps,
Shawn

I'm currently only using Win98SE, but want to also install Win2000.

I have a large(40Gig) backup hard drive that I want to make my primary hard drive and then remove the small one I'm currently using.

I've removed all the data on that slave/backup hard drive and have formatted it.

But I want to partition it before making it the primary drive into 2 equal parts....1st partition to ghost my Win98SE OS and programs to...and want to install Win2000 on the 2nd partition.

My question is: In the Fdisk process, do I say "Yes" when asked if I want to enable large disk support? (which I've heard will set up a FAT32 "setup" on the drive). I know that Win2000 is not an FAT32 setup. Will chosing large disk support make the 2nd partition incompatable to install Win2000 on as I want to do?

This is really a confusing stopping point in the process for me.

Would some knowledgable person please advice me on that?

thank You

Additional information:

The error first occurred the morning after a seemingly successful build/install. It has occurred several times during unrelated events -- playing Skyrim, installing Office, watching Flash video. I found that it is reproducible by copying a large file (> 4GB), which will explain the large quantity of dumps from tonight.

There are several things I've attempted already to troubleshoot:

1. Assuming that it might be driver related: Replaced hard drive, performed fresh install of Windows, installed necessary drivers only (chipset, video), attempted reproduction method mentioned above. BSOD occured same as before.

2. Assuming it was RAM related: Remove one of two RAM modules, attempt reproduction. Fails. Try second RAM module. Fails. Try one module in different socket. Fails.

So I'm stumpted. This was my first custom built PC and I just don't have the expertise to make sense of the dump files. Really hoping somewhere here can help me. Thanks in advance.

I have had a Brother MFC-3220C for about two years and not had too much trouble with it until today. After printing out about 30 pages, I noticed a display that said "Error 41 Unplug printer and call Brother." Before doing this I Googled "Brother printer Error 41" and was met with an avalanche of people complaining that Error 41 means that the print head is bad and needs to be replaced and that this is an all-to-frequent problem with Brother printers. Several people indicated that they got "Error 41" messages a few months after they had replaced a print head in their printer after previously getting the message. The tech. at brother said that if I had purchased the printer in the last 24 months (which I haven't) a service center would replace it for free; if not it would cost me around $40 for the print head plus labor. I am thinking that it might be cheaper to buy a new printer (considering this problem with Error 41 messages seems to be a manufacturer's defect). The printer that I have is a printer/copier/scanner/fax machine, and I am interested in buying something like this multifunction machine.

Are there any suggestions as to which brand is the best with regards to printer/copier/ scanner/faxing machines? I am thinking Cannon but I really don't know which is the best.
thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

I belong to a large group that I send out emails to occasionally. Outlook 2007 on my Vista computer will not let me send to the whole group in one email. I have to split it into about 6 different emails to get it to go. When I was using Outlook 2000 on XP I did not have to do this. What setting can I use to force Outlook 2007 to accept all the addresses I want to enter so I just have to send my newsletter one time?

In a related question...Outlook 2007 will also hang up and not send the email to my group IF there is one email some where in the group that it does not like.
TWO QUESTIONS:
1) is there a way to force the email to go even if there is one bad address in the group and just bounce back an error message on the problem email?

2) Is there a way to make it tell me which email it has a problem with so I can manually remove it? Outlook Express will at least kick back a helpful error message and tell me what email address is causing a problem so I can just remove that name to make the email go to the rest of the people.

Thank you,
Cindy

I have a ton of media I'd like to transfer over to an external HDD.
I don't want to simply select a bunch of folders and drag n drop over to the backup drive tho, I want to select individual files (or folders) and save them into their respectively named folders on the backup drive.

If I do this with the default windows file copy manager (via the drag n drop method) I'll end up with dozens of "File Transfer" windows, each with its own percent completion status, and it tends to choke out my machine.

Is there a 3rd party software that will allow me to individually select the files/folders I want and add them to a queue, then batch transfer the whole list to a user-specified destination path?

I'm thinking an FTP client but that seems a little overkill. Kinda looking for something simple and easy.

I am in the process of setting up a batch of new laptops. They are Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 models with Win 7 Pro 64. Once I get the machines joined to the domain and install all the necessary software for daily production (nothing fancy...Office 2010,
Chrome, Cisco VPN, and TightVNC) I allow the machine to install Windows updates. If I simply try to allow all of the updates to install, I get the "Reverting Changes" message upon reboot. However, if I manually check the boxes to install 5 or 10
at a time, all of the updates seem to install correctly. I've read through some similar threads here but have a couple of issues:
1) Most of the threads I've read both here and other sites deal with Vista and/or are at least 3 years old. My machines are right out of the box and have never had Vista installed.
2) Most of the threads suggest doing a system repair or restore using the original Windows 7 CD. Unfortunately, Lenovo is stupid and does not provide a standard OS disc, so I don't have a "stock" Win7 disc to use.
On the same note, I have used the factory restore discs created by Lenovo to restore the systems to the factory defaults and run in to the same problem.
And finally, I just have neither the time nor the inclination to set up every machine twice (the initial setup followed by a restore) or sit beside a machine and babysit Windows Updates by selecting a fraction of the available updates to install in one sitting.

A:"Reverting Changes" after large batch of Windows Updates

This problem drove me nuts.  The Windows Update database is not corrupt in this case and renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder and starting a new one won't amount to a hill of beans with this problem.   Reading through this thread, I am
amazed at the agony this issue is causing.
The whole thing is a messed up patch from August 2012 that doesn't behave properly.  It was wrong when it came out and Microsoft apparently never did fix it correctly.  Quality control at the world's biggest software company.

Here is the workaround.
Of that large batch of patches, first pick out KB2647753.  Put that patch in first.  Restart the computer, let it run through its update process, then do the rest.  Your Windows Updates should work fine after that.  That's it.  That's
the whole cure.
Our friends at Lenovo are officially less than helpful on this problem, but a nice lady on the support line unofficially pointed me to this workaround last month.  But she would or could not tell me why. The official Lenovo answer is, "that question
is beyond the scope of our support and you need to call Microsoft", which of course goes nowhere fast.

Do a google search for "KB2647753" and you'll see lots of history about this patch.  It has apparently caused lots of grief for lots of admins over the past several months and for the life of me, I don't understand why Microsoft won... Read more

Hey guys, I managed to change my default icons to blue ones. They show great in List view but when I switch to the Large Icons view, thumbnails show preview in Yellow(original) icon, is there way to change them as well?

Hello all

This may seem like a silly thing to care about but one of the best things I like about Win7 coming from XP is the ability to make the window that comes up when you download something much bigger.

Was always a pain to deal with such a small one with XP.

About the only thing is that while it can be dragged larger it won't stay that size for ever and mostly after a complete reboot, it always defaults to about a 1/4 size of the screen window size.

So I was just wondering if there is any kind of a registry hack I can make that sets this size so that I might set the default higher so I don't have to keep re-dragging it so much to get that.

Thanks for any help.

A:Have "save download window" stay large?

This is a good question and something I was wondering the other day as well. Usually window sizes and positions are saved in the Shell/Bag properties in the registry, which makes me wonder why they are resetting.

I haven't tested when it actually resets, but if it resets upon boot, I'm curious as to why, at that point.

OK, so what's going on here with folder navigation?
The properties tabs seem to be the same except that the identical folder from:

"This PC" is of type: System
"C:" is of type: This Folder

In addition, it seems that when you change the sort orders, etc. within the separate "types", it saves the new setting separately. What is this "feature" actually called? Is this for some type of "quick views" for when you're doing different things with bulk files routinely? Is there some interface to manage all these different "types"?

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more
