# Robocopy results not as expected.

Q: Robocopy results not as expected.

I am using Robocopy to do a one way copy of changed user data files/directories from one computer to my server prior to running Backup.

The syntax I am using is :
robocopy y:\transport e:data\transport /copyall /E /log:e:\data\non-transport\logfiles\

Y is a mapped drive on my laptop. All newer files in the source directory and all of its subdirectories should be copied to the object directory

The documentation on Robocopy is sketchy at best. I believe this syntax should only copy source files that are newer than those in the target directory. However, if the date/time stamps are equal, it copies the file. It appears to me that all of these copies are unnecessary and it just opens the door to errors.

Can someone identify my error in thinking

A: Robocopy results not as expected.

Do I have Bad Font Odor? It seems that none of my posts ever get responded too, I try to be pretty discriptive in my subject and I get no responses.

Some of the posts that say "Vista not working" get a magnatude of responses.

When I used XCOPY /D only Sources file with the date/time stamp newer than the DT Stamp in the Object got copied.

Robocopy seems to copy files from the source if the DT Stamp is newer or equal than that of the Object. Guess what, once it copies the newer file, the DT Stamp in each directory is going to be equal, no need to keep copying it.

This should be a basic test before decommitting a working product, ie XCOPY, that has been around forever. Hopefully this is not "AS DESIGNED"

Someone at least acknowldege that this has been read.

Hello,
I'm obviously missing some really basic point.
In column A, I have a date of 12/28/2006. In column B, I write the formula =YEAR(A1) and the result is 6/28/1905. Can anyone tell me what my error is?

Thanks!!!

Hi Patricia, welcome to TSG. It sounds like your formula cell is formatted as a date. If you change the format to General, you should see the result change to 2006. Hope that helps.

We are looking to migrate a SQL database to a new server. The database is for an imaging software and has pointers to the images. We are going to move the database in the next week or two. I wanted to start copying the image files to the new server to prepare for the migration (about 300 gig of 17k files). I understand that robocopy is a good program to accomplish this. I am looking to copy all the files, folders, and subfolders over, then copy only the changes over nightly. What is the correct command line that I should use to accomplish this? Can I save it to a bat file and use windows task scheduler to have it run nightly?

Thanks in advance for all of the help!

A:robocopy

Are you migrating to a server that will be running the same software? Why not use an SSIS package? That way, you can migrate the complete database to the new server and just point your programs as necessary.

Basically I would like to copy from my Skydrive to copy to my NAS once a day everyday. I know some of the basics but need help with specifics like copy to folder and making sure the newest file exists as the saved copy.

Here we go!

If your looking for a clean way to do that, you should look at Microsoft Richcopy which is a GUI'd + version of Robocopy. I've used it for years and it works fine under Windows-8.

I have created a robocopy.bat as below :

robocopy C:\Users\Faust_000\Documents\Alfredo "F:\Backups Documents" /e /mir /z /np /tee /log:Alfredo_log.txt

and I have created a Planned Activity into the Planning Utility to run at certain time every day.

Now my question is :
1. if manually activeted by double click robocopy.bat it perfectly works and the log.tx file is created
2. if I execute the robocopy by the Planned Activity (by manually Excute or automatically at the planned time) the robocopy is done correctly but the log.txt file is not created or updated.

I did both on W7 Professional 64bit and on W8.1 64bit but no difference.
Could someone help me to understand why the difference of results manually and via Planned Activity ?
Blau0179

A:Robocopy

I don't use Robocopy or Planned Activity but it might perhaps be related to the current directory when the bat file is executed. If so, the other log file should be somewhere on your system and you could search for it.

I mean when you manually run the bat file you get a certain "current directory", but in the other scenario you get another directory. You can try to include a path for the log parameter or move to a certain directory with the cd command in the bat file, before the robocopy command.

Hi, I have 2 questions which I desperately need help with. Here's the question: 1. robocopy shoud Run in a separate terminal window and recheck file system changes every minute. 2. write a continous logfile that contains all detected file system changes including full pathnames of affected files. How do I do this?

This is one way, put this in a batch file:

:Start
robocopy command here
timeout 120 > nul
goto Start

Lots and lots of robocopy parameters, one of which is /log:file (file being the file you want info logged ion). > nul hides the Timeout in n seconds message.

Hi there,

I want to use ROBOCOPY to move any file that is older than 30 days.
I've tried this command but it seems to move the file anyway, even though the file is only 4 days old:

robocopy * C:\b2d C:\archive /mov /minage: 01-04-2011

From "/minage: 01-04-2011" i thought it would only move files that are at least 30 days or more old. But this seems to move everything.

Can anybody explain why this is happening? Is it because i used a wildcard on files, will that not look at the file age?

Thanks!

Hi all, quick question.

I have used Robocopy to back up all my photos etc. for yonks, set it so that it mirrored by files on my main laptop. I have since had the need for faster and bigger storage and so have invested in a NAS. Awesome.....BUT...

when I run my script it no longer detects that a copy of the file already exists - it thinks every file is 'newer' and so it copies everything again (not funny given it's 50Gigs!)

My script consists of several lines like this...it's very simple(!)..

robocopy "c:\Users\Steve\my pictures" "\\LS-XHLA97\backup\sr-backup\pictures" /mir /xd *.lrdata

robocopy "c:\Users\Steve\Modo" "\\LS-XHLA97\backup\sr-backup\Modo" /mir

Any ideas? Or suggestions for another way of doing this type of backup?

Many thanks

Hi
I've just recently realized that copying folders to a backup hard drive resets their "created" date. Should my computer ever crash, all my backup files will state to have just been created on that certain date.

Me, being the organize-freak I am, have been looking for a solution so my backed up files can have the same time stamps as on my computer right now.

I've done a little searching, and have found that people always recommend Robocopy. Problem is, I can't understand a word of the tutorials. Is there anyone with a layman's explanation for how to run Robocopy to carry out what I want?

And also just for the heck of it, is Robocopy the only solution? Is there some sort of back up program on Windows 7 that can do that?

Thanks!

I've been using Robocopy for a while now and I have found it to be a simple and mostly efficient tool to mirror contents from one drive to another, and I've created a couple of batch files to simplify typing in parameters, like "AF ? ?" to copy my data files from one drive to another.

The thing is, for the last two days my data contents have been mirrored to my HDD partitions and a USB device absolutely fine - only a few files have been modified each time and I can rest assured that the contents are identical. The whole process has only taken a few moments.

But last night, the clocks went back and then earlier today I ran Robocopy once again to mirror my data contents. The HDD copy went without a hitch, but when running it to mirror contents to the USB device it started to recopy EVERYTHING over to it, naming all the files "Older"! What's more, I check the "modified" date/times on both sides and they're identical! I can only assume that the change in the clock from yesterday is the cause, and something unique to FAT32 file format (which the USB is).

The least I want to do is not to copy files with an older timestamp on top of new ones (if that's what's happening) so is there a way I can still use /MIR and use the /XO (exclude older) switch as well?

A:Robocopy help required

Well, I'm trying the /XO switch, and it seems to have worked so far.

I was going to just use the MIR switch to keep things in sync but read that MIR could overwrite the rights on the destinantion, is this true? I am not trying to do anything with rights and don't want any rights being assigned or changed.
Am I better off using /E /Purge or /MIR.....or would I be better off with a different program like RichCopy.

Hello Everyone,

I have been working on this for the past three days getting no where.

The system I am trying this on is a Win7 64 bit Home Ed., what I am trying to do is get a batch file created where it copies certain files to an external hard drive. Yes I am already using the Windows Backup that is included but I want to do this as an extra measure.

I have been trying to get the following command to work:

robocopy C:\Users\pare80\Documents E:\backup\Docs /E /CREATE /MIR /SEC /ZB /R:3 /V /FP /TEE /XJ

It looks like the command ran, but when I go to the E drive the folder backup is there but nothing else.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

Take the switch /CREATE away from your string. It only copies the folder (directory) structure with 0-lenght files (placeholders). Your command string should otherwise work just fin. Remember to run command prompt as administartor.

I have been using xcopy to copy data from a file server to a flash drive. That works OK, but after some time the flash drive is cluttered with files and folders that have been moved or deleted from the file server.

I want the flash drive to mirror what is on the file server, so I decided to give ROBOCOPY a try (version XP010 on a Windows XP computer). Here is the line in my batch file:

ROBOCOPY \\fileserver\share\frank\somefolder E:\somefolder /COPYALL /B /MIR /R:0 /W:0 /LOG:MyLogfile.txt

This works fine except the log file reports Error 3 "The system cannot find the path specified" for files in only one subfolder, and deletes all the files in that subfolder from the flash drive.

The subfolder name is "Computer" (which as far are I know isn't a reserved name), and it has the same attributes and NTFS permissions as all of the others.

Any ideas what the problem could be?

G'day,

Problem description: after my Vista laptop crashed (hung up in windows start-up loop) I used

robocopy c:\ d:\complete /mir ..... from the restore cmd prompt to make a backup of ca. 50gb to external hdd.

I then installed Windows 7 on the machine and used

robocopy d:\complete c:\complete /mir ... so I would be able to pull whatever folder I need to the new system.

The problem is the in both version I can see robocopy in the cmd shell copying the files in their respective folder hierarchy (which takes ages!). But on both, C: and D:\complete, I only see a folder "4d0a0xxxxx00e8e4c7332a3a394c". Right-click on the folder gives a size of approx. 6mb only, although my c: hdd space was reduced by ca. 50gb???? So, I assume the restore did work, and this is a permission problem.

I tried to take ownership of the folder under the new system to no avail. (just to clarify: i use the same username and pwd under win7 as under vista, and lost pwd is not an issue, in case i would need it to gain access)

All input highly appreciated! Thanks,
Rick

Hi

With the Robocopy command of Windows 8.x, how do I do a copy of a file (renaming it) in the same directory of the source file?

Thanks

Bye

A:Robocopy and same directory

You can't. Use copy or xcopy if you want to rename.
e.g.
Code:
xcopy c:\test\old.txt c:\test\new.txt

Note xcopy will always prompt you with "Does c:\test\new.txt specify a file name or a directory name on the target" so you would probably be better off with
Code:
copy /v c:\test\old.txt c:\test\new.txt

where the /v verifies the copy.

I am copying files with dates in the filename (filename_20091127.txt) from one location to another. How can I drop the date from the filename when moving/having moved the files accross? The file types and filenames vary from file to file but the date format will always be '_YYYYMMDD'. Is this something that can be done with RoboCopy and if so, how? If not, with what and how? Thanks in advance.

A:RoboCopy Query

Robocopy doesn't rename files.

Welcome to TSG!

For this, I'd use RenameMaster, and just remove the last 9 characters of the file name.

It's on the Scripting tab, about 8th item down, Remove Beginning/Ending

If this is a daily occurrence, you could write a batch file to remove the date after all the files are copied. Not too hard to just remove the last 9 characteers in a name.
If you need to check for resulting duplicates or confirm it's actually an underscore followed by a date it would get more complex.
Code:
Setlocal EnableDelayedExpansion
Set _Folder=C:\Location of Files
PushD %_Folder%
For /F "Tokens=* Delims=" %%I In ('Dir /B "%_Folder%\*.*"') Do (
Set _Fname=%%~nI
Rename "%%I" "!_Fname:~0,-9!%%~xI"
)

Copys from Users 2 photos folder and copies it to the server photos directory

then i put a command to do /xd c:\photos\photos-add which is suppose to exclude it, which it doesn't.

It just keeps replicating each other in each folder.... Catch my drift?

What would I add and does it matter where I place the syntax for it to work?

I currently have the video card NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Pro. However due to the fact that this is such an old card many new games don't work on it. For this reason I want to change to a NVIDIA GeForce. Would any problems occur to my computer from changing video cards? If any, explain please.

More replies

I got a new mobo cpu ram and ssd. It is the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820239045 and the motherboard has sata 6 gb/s connection that I made sure to plug the hd into.

When I installed windows it was ok but it certainly does not load in 3 seconds. The desktop comes up after about 10 seconds and then when I click on Chrome instead of popping up almost instantly it will show up in the task manager and load after about 45-60 seconds.

A couple of things to consider is, I am running the drive in ide mode for now. There are some items in the device manager I have not installed, the onboard graphics driver for one because I have an Nvidia card that is working just fine, there are also a bunch of HD audio devices that from what I can tell are from the nvidia card (probably for the HDMI out).

I looked in the Asrock BIOS and I do not see a way to disable the onboard video if you have a proper video card installed.

Another thing is before I disabled the devices with that have no drivers they were detected and ask for a driver install about the same time chrome would come up before I disabled them. Can devices that don't have drivers (even when you don't use them) cause this delay? Is AHCI significantly faster than IDE mode? It can't be normal that a SSD that is this fast would not allow Chrome to load nearly instantly after boot.

A:SSD slower than expected

I use SSD boot drives for all my computers.

Nice, fast cool running and quiet.

For and SSD you need AHCI mode and windows 7 or 8 to get the real benefit.

What make is the 6Gig drive connection? I use mine on the Intel in two computers and a Cheapo AMD for the second laptop. The Amd laptop went from pokey to OK when I went to the SSD. The Toshiba went to nice and fast.

You will need to research how to convert to AHCI if you want to keep the current install of windows.

Why are you not installing the drivers?

I plan to install a new SSD to my HP Envy, and a fresh install of a newly purchased copy of Windows 10. Are there any issues I should expect? is it as simple as putting in the new drive, booting from the W10 USB, installing W10 to the drive, and everything will work? HP notes that I should request recovery media for my computer, but this doesn't show up as an option when I type in my model and serial number. Is the recovery media only needed if you're trying to restore an existing copy of Windows, or is it reaquired to get the motherboard to accept the new hard drive? Are there only certain hard drives that the motherboard will recognize, or can I buy any? Here's the background:My HDD died pretty severely. The HP recovery tools were able to partition my drive to 10% of its original volume and install Windows 8 (it could not install my free 10 upgrade), but the product key entitlement is apparently on the bad portiion of the drive because it won't let me continue without a product key and I cannot retrieve it, even with 2 hours of chat help with Microsoft.

A:Expected issues with new HDD or SSD?

jcberk In practice, it SHOULD be a simple matter of booting from the Win10 media and installing Win10. The complication is the presence or lack of HP Win10 drivers for your PC, and the drivers pages are currently absent from this site.  HP is supposedly working to return the pages, but they've provided us no date to expect this to be done. So, I would wait until the pages are back and you can confirm that HP has Win10 drivers for your PC.

My apologies if this is not the correct forum for this question/issue.

We have several Windows 7 professional systems. Most of them function as expected, however we have a few that do not.

Case in point:
We have two windows 7 pro 32bit systems that have the same identical setups, same patches etc (in thought anyway).

For this purpose we will call them PC-A and PC-B

Both Systems have UAC set to level 2.

Logged into PC-A as a user a member of the local administrator group.
When we try to install a .msi file on PC-A from a network share on one system, about half way through the install the UAC prompts us to allow a portion of the install to continue. after clicking continue the install completes.

Logged into PC-B as user, a member of the local administrator group.
When we try to install the same exact file as we did on PC-A, about the same point that PC-A prompts with UAC, PC-B fails with a message saying you need to run the install in evelated permission and the install fails.

Why are these two work stations displaying two different reactions to like situations?

It appears as though PC-B is not getting the flip to prompt for elevated permissions. If we cancel the eleveated permission prompt on PC-A, we get the same display message that PC-B defaults to, saying you need to run this with administrator privledges and fails the install.

We have been banging our heads trying to figure out why some (about 10%) have this issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated... Read more

Hello Khgiese, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm not sure why it may be doing that, but you might use the tutorial below to add "Run as administrator" to the context menu of MSI files. Afterwards, right click on the MSI file and click on "Run as administrator" to see if it will install now.

Hope this helps,

I recently upgraded to WMP 11. What a mess, and of course there's virtually no support for it from Microsoft! In fact I'm at the point of rolling it back to WMP 10 except I thought I'd run it by you guys first. I'm running XP Pro on HP Presario notebook (~750 MB RAM).

Here's the error message (one of many): [ATTACH

I have been using MSE for over a year and find it to be quite effective. Lately, however, the automatic updates and scheduled scans seem to have been disabled - I now have to do manual process for both - it isn't a big deal but I kind of like the automatic nature of these processes. I have searched this forum but don't really see any answers to this. Help would be most appreciated. Thank you very much.

A:MSE not performing as expected

MSE normally gets definition updates via Windows Update.
Take a look in your Windows Update History to see if they are listed, and if there are any errors.

If "Start the scheduled scan only when my PC is on but not in use" is checked, uncheck it and see if that helps.
Also, is your PC on at the time of the Scheduled Scan?

Hello,

Thanks for checking this post out. I'm a new member but have looked through the advice of the forum in the past. Seems I am in worse shape than I first thought. Below is my Panda ActiveScan followed by my DSS scan.

WinXP Pro SP2, all MS Updates installed.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Also wanted to give symptom information: originally saw install.exe and other files appear on my desktop and my machine rebooted automatically; IE started trying to pop up windows and was crashing repeatedly, two audio sales "pop-up" messages came through IE. I installed my virus protection program Symantec Antivirus and tried to have some of the malware isolated and quarantined. Doesn't look like it was able to get more than a few of the files. I also ran AdAware to get rid of anything it saw and what follows is the remainder as I follow the advice in the locked posts here in the forum.

Thank you again for any help.

I am trying to use a work around in a CMD batch file in Windows XP. Since Dos does not support 'back ticks' to inject a command into another one.

Setup. i have a directory of 90 folders that are named using random characters.
Each folder contains a folder called "UPDATE"
Update contains a file named KB#######.CAT

I have a list of all directories in a filenamed 'dirlist.txt'. My FOR /f loop zips through each directory, searches for "KB####.cat "
the goal is to rename each folder to its corresponding KB#####.cat file.

Since I can't use back-quotes like I can in linux to
[pseudo]
rename RandomCharacterFoldername 'Get KB file name.cat'
[/pseudo]

I have to get the name output it to a temp.text file called "var.txt"
then read that into a variable. Then use that variable as the 2nd parameter in the REN command.

Set /p doesn't seem to work.
Code:

for /f %%G in (dirlist.txt) do (
dir /b %%G\update\*.cat>var.txt
set /p myvar =<var.txt
ren %%G %myvar%
set "myvar="
)

A:Dos SET /P not working as expected

So you have this folder:

Code:
and want to rename it to:

Code:
Where the KB012345 part matches the .cat file in the update subfolder.
Do you want the folder name to have the .cat extension, or just the KB###### part of the name?

The reason yours isn't working is you need to be using Delayed Expansion, as your file is actually only one line, so %myvar% is replaced with its value when the line is read, so will always be null. Also, the set /P statement is using "myvar " with a trailing space, and the rename command is using a different variable, "myvar" without a trailing space, they are not the same variable.
The value read from the file with the set /P statement won't be seen without using Delayed Expansion.
This should work, though I haven't tested it:

Code:
SetLocal EnableDelayedExpansion
for /f %%G in (dirlist.txt) do (
dir /b %%G\update\*.cat>var.txt
set /p myvar=<var.txt
ren %%G !myvar!
)

This might be an easier way, this will rename the folder without the .cat extension, and no need for delayed expansion or a temp file:

Code:
PushD %_Root%
For /F "Tokens=* Delims=" %%I In ('Dir /AD /B') Do (
For /F "Tokens=* Delims=" ... Read more

I last used robocopy on 041209 and I updated my XP Home SP3 on 041609 and on 041909 I have found that robocopy does not work anymore. It will create the folder it is supposed to create but there are no contents in it. I have also tried xcopy and xxcopy and all they will do is the same. I repair reinstalled robocopy and the qui said "Please use Windows Update to check for any critical updates to the .NET Framework." This message was at the bottom of the gui and was a suggestion rather than a command about the .NET Framework updates. I have also run System File Checker.

What could be keeping robocopy, xcopy and xxcopy from copying correctly?

I have found that by pasting the robocopy argument from the
command file into the Run box the backup occurs as expected.
But the command file when clicked on still does not do the
backup. Below are two versions that work when pasted into
the Run box.

robocopy C:\Annoyance C:\BackupAnnoyance

robocopy "C:\Annoyance" "C:\BackupAnnoyance" /COPYALL /V /NP /R:10 /W:30

The results are the same when I use xcopy or xxcopy: clicking on the bat file does not backup anything but when I paste the bat files argument in the Run box the backup occurs.
Sincerely, Teefermup

I use ROBOCOPY to synchronize files between my desktop and laptop machines via a USB flash drive. ROBOCOPY is set to copy only updated files. It worked perfectly under Windows 7, reporting and copying only "newer" files; under Windows 8 it marks
and copies the newer files and marks all the others as "modified" and copies them as well, even when the "modified" files haven't been accessed or written to.

Here is the command line I am using:
%SystemRoot%\system32\robocopy C:"\users\Robert Jacobs\Pix" i:\Pix /PURGE /E /XO /FFT /XA:SH /DST /R:5 /W:2 /LOG+:C:"\users\Robert Jacobs\My Documents\work"\leap_down.log /TS /NP
As I said, this worked perfectly under Windows 7; it seems to be broken in windows 8. How can I fix it?
All help will be gratefully appreciated.

A:Robocopy problem under Windows 8

Could this be caused by the same problem that causes Windows File History to backup unmodified files?

The following thread discusses this topic: Windows 8 File History - Excessive backup - Excessively saving copies
of files (photos, videos, documents, etc.)
The fix there was to disable Homegroup functionality.
The question there was:
Why is File History saving so many duplicate copies of my media, when I'm not making any changes to the media or metadata?!?
Does anybody know?
and the final solution to date is:
Since I switched HomeGroup off, File History appears to be working sensibly. Only changed files appear to being backed up. My NAS is noticably quieter and my laptop far more responsive (as it isn't constantly backing up!!)

Thanks all - nearly gave up on File History. More than happy to live without HomeGroup as it really isn't needed in Win 8 as Noel helpfully pointed out above.
Could this be it? As far as I know, BOTH the File History and Robocopy use
Shadow Copy functionality to copy locked files on-the-fly. So it looks like, the problem lies with how Shadow Copy works when Home Group functionality is turned on.
Gentlemen, could you please verify that and check if switching Home Group off helps here as well or not?

Well this is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given...

Hi Everyone,
New to the forum here and would like to throw this scenario out to all the Tech Support Guy users out there.

A little background:
I use backup exec 10d to run our backups: full backups on weekends, and diffs during the weekdays. Attached to my fileserver (Win 2000) are 2 arrays; a production and backup array (which we robocopy to everyday and evening).

Last week we ran into some NTFS corruption so we took the production array offline made the backup array the production array and robocopied the data to the new production array. After the robocopy we ran a chkdisk on the NTFS corrupted array.

When the Diffs ran that night, the archive bit must have been reset because the job ran as if it were a full backup job.

Here's the problem:
It's happened again and we need to cut over to our backup array. I haven't figured out a way to "save" the archive bit through robocopy (still figuring out all the switches).

Question:
Would the /B switch in robocopy do the job? Here's what I'm currently using:

del /q /f f:\rcd.txt
robocopy d:\ x:\ /V /FP /XF db.* /TEE /LOG+:f:\rcd.txt /E /PURGE /COPYALL /Z /ETA /R:2 /W:1

In the event I need to cut over to my backup array and run my nightly diff, I don't want to run into a scenario where a full is running during the week. Any and all help is appreciated!
Thanks,
RossDey

A:Saving the archive bit through Robocopy?

When you do a copy in almost all cases the archive bit is reset.

You have a few options maybe use something like -
http://www.theutilityfactory.com/summaries/copy-files.htm

Where it looks as though it retians all attributes when it copies (I have not tried this it is just an example).

Another thought is possibly find a way to script out a way for it to search all files that have the archive bit set to ON (the files you want in your incremental) also known by attrib +A and make sure to set it after the copy with the attrib command?

What your looking for isn't right there within the robocopy functionality though sorry. You could skip the entire backup and set all the attribs in the file off with /A-: A but this would then totally defeat the incremental and make it so nothing is backed up.

Try running a chkdsk on the PC your copying from. It sounds like there may be a problem on that end.

Please note that all files have a security IDs assigned to it and usually a chkdsk will find this and fix it.

I have a computer that is running Vista HP on its original C\: drive, that has a maintainance program that was preinstalled on my pc. I also purchased Vista Ultimate (retail version), that is installed as a dual boot. I originally ran HP for the business, running a program that used Sql Server, but it became corrupted, and was unable to be fixed, so I abandoned the drive with HP (C:\) and only use the drive with Ultimate (M:\) on it.
I realize you cannot simply copy a program from one drive to another, because it will not result in an installed program. I am hoping that Robocopy will be my answer. I tried the following steps:
I created a folder on my M:\ drive, the drive I now use, with the same program name as the original program on C:\. I then tried to run a command prompt script, with Administrative priviledges.
ROBOCOPY C:\Program Files\[program name] M:\Program Files\[program name]
Each time I run it, I get an error message:
Robocopy is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
I realize I may have been able to add several switches to the script, but for some reason, my computer doesn't even want to recognize the Robocopy command.
Thanks
Dave

A:Unable to use Robocopy in Vista

It appears that robocopy is not in the path environment variable and the command prompt cannot find it. If it is in the normal location (\windows\system32) this should not happen.

But robocopy will not solve your problem. Installed applications have registry entries, and often other things as well, associated with them. Only the application installer knows about these things and only it can properly install an application. Robocopy has no hope of doing this.

Hi,

I want to use Robocopy to backup the data from my external hardrive D to a file called 'Backup' in a cluster storage W.
I only want to backup the modified and new files. In other words, I don't want to back up all the files in D every time I run Robocopy.

This is what I wrote by reading other posts on the forum:
title Backup personal files
robocopy D:\ W:\Backup /e /mir /np /tee /log+:backup_log.txt
pause

However, the script below does not back up all the files.
Any suggestion on how I can improve the robocopy script?

Thanks a lot for your help!

The default copy switch of robocopy is /COPYAT if you don't specify any copy options. This is the code I'm using:

robocopy C:\ D:\Backup RAMDisk.img /copyall /R:5 /W:15 /V /log:\Users\Kevin\Desktop\robocopy_log.txt

The RAMDisk.img file that I'm copying is a compressed image file. Now with that syntax /COPYAT will be used which means that it will copy all attributes of that file. Whenever I run this, I successfully copy the file but it doesn't retain the compression attribute of that file.

What could be wrong with this? Both source and destination are NTFS-formatted.

A:Backing up files using Robocopy

Although compression is indicated via a file's attributes, I'm not sure if that particular property actually transfers with the copy, even with Robocopy. If you copy to a compressed folder (folder and contents) then I would think the copy would be compressed. And if that folder is not compreesed, files that are placed there will be uncompressed (even if you are copying a compressed file to that location).

Can someone help me with a robocopy script that will initially back up all the data from one of the drives to the other, then only the changing files after the first run?

A:Robocopy for a Dual HDD setup

The same command will do both - and it creates a mirror backup, removing any folders and files from the target that do not exist in the source.

d: is the source and e: is the target

This is untested: test it on a couple of USB sticks with test data on them first, as it can wipe the target drive very easily too.

You could do two things:

1. You can try to use ROBOMOJO to run multiple robocopy jobs

or

2. You can run two separate robocopy jobs, with 10 minute interval between them.
Check this post: One source to multiple destinations with Robocopy

Hope this helps.

Gentlemen I need a nudge to get Robocopy going. We have 2 HDDs with our data on board. Recently I dropped the original from my desk to the floor. Its dead. Real dead.

So now there is one...... left.

I want to Robocopy it - the entire HDD (located drive F) name for drive is Terra 3.
I have an empty 3Tb HDD waiting to receive the contents (located drive H) folder name> Terra 3 Back Up

Write the steps & the formula please. I'm way too nervous. If I lose T3 I'll need to contemplate a window exit.

A:Robocopy - nudged required

ROBOCOPY is a folder copier, not a file copier. Thus, you need to specify each folder individually. Lets assume you have 3 folders called A, B and C. Each of those may have sub-folders beneath them, and each of these contain several files.

Create a .bat file on your desktop as follows, then run it as administrator.

Code:
robocopy F:\FolderA H:\"Terra 3 Backup" /copyall /e
robocopy F:\FolderB H:\"Terra 3 Backup" /copyall /e
robocopy F:\FolderC H:\"Terra 3 Backup" /copyall /e
The copyall switch copies all the file attributes. The /e switch copies any subfolders even if they are empty.

Since this is the first time you are copying (and presumably its a once off) I would use XCOPY instead, since you do not need to copy each folder. ROBOCOPY holds no advantage over XCOPY for a one-off job.

In an elevated CMD window, type as shown below, and hit enter:

Code:
xcopy F:\*.* /V /E H:\"Terra 3 Backup\
/v verifies each file after copying
/e copies all folders/sub-folders even if they are empty

I'm transfering around 216GB of files from my old hard drive to my new one using a SATA->USB converter cable (I only have one HDD slot). Using robocopy to transfer the files, the system freezes completely - nothing responds at all and any status LEDs that are lit at the time remain lit. My only option is to turn off the power. The clock will show the time of the crash (i.e., it stops).

I've yet to 'witness' the crash, but when I leave the computer alone for a bit and come back later on, I find it locked up.

Strangely, since then, I'm now using a normal drag+drop to copy the files, and it hasn't crashed in all the time it's been copying so far.

There's nothing in the event logs... Any ideas?

However, I don't want to delete everything on the old HDD. I've been looking around the internet, and anything I can find is just confusing to me.

The old external HDD that has all my files and folders is J: and the HDD I want to transfer them to which is a new internal HDD is Z:

What would be the proper command for copying everything on J: exactly as it is to Z: ? I hope I put this question in the correct section, lol, and as always, thanks for everyones help.

Didn't know where else to put this so I hope this is good.

Twice now I have experienced a issue with robocopy where while copying a user folder it mass nests the Application Data folder within Local. It replicates this to both \User\AppData\Local and \User\Local Settings. Weird thing is Local Settings is just a place holder to point legacy programs to the new location so why robo copy created a folder from this I am not to sure. Both times I have had this happen it has replicated the Application Data folder so many times within itself that it fills the HDD down to the last byte. And since it is nesting it the path is far too long for any standard windows command to do anything with this structure. For example my last instance of it replicated about 15,000 files into over 200,000 from ~9GB to over 80GB and over 30 directories deep. Not sure if there is any end to it or if it does just keep repeating until the drive is full. Some loop issue with the local settings place holder?

Anyway to delete this massively nested directory structure I have found two methods.

1. Boot into Ubuntu (or any distro of your chooseing... I like the Ubuntu live CD) and delete the folder from there. In Ubuntu it moves into the trash so you have to delete it from there as well.

2. Use robocopy again to copy over a nul directory. For instance I created a empty folder called empty on the root of C and then as follows ROBOCOPY C:\EMPTY "X:\USERS\ADMINISTRATOR\APPDATA\LOCAL\APPLICATION DATA&... Read more

A:Robocopy mass nesting bug

This sounds as though it could have something to do with junctions. Have you tried the command with the /XJ switch? You might need to use /XJD (Directory) or /XJF (File) switch instead. This switch tells Robocopy to ignore or eXclude the specified type of Junction point. These are included by default.

Hi,
So I've just got myself a Crucial M4 256GB and want to move my existing Win 7 x64 installation off my HDD and on to my SSD.
I've done all the preliminaries in Diskpart and have the drive marked as active. The last step is to copy all the files across (rather than use cloning software) with Robocopy.

However, even in an elevated command prompt I'm getting 'Access is denied' errors on the important stuff.

The command I am using is:

Robocopy e:\ h:\ /e /copyall /dcopy:t /r:0

(e and h being what Vista has assigned each drive when trying it in that)

also tried the /sec switch with no joy.

I've tried this using the Windows 7 install DVD and within Windows Vista x86 (the HDD is a dual boot with 2 partitions; one containing 7 x64 and the other Vista x86).

Any help on this one, please?

A:Installed new SSD - Having Robocopy failures.

I've added the /b switch in to the command line which seems to now allow copying of files previously denied. Shall see if this has done the trick once the copy completes.

Hello all,

I recently built my own workstation. I am a web/software developer and I wanted something that would have plenty of gusto for my work. After putting it all together though, I am not impressed with the performance. It doesn't seem to be any faster at startup or in loading applications than my previous tower (hp s5123w).

It also will not resume from sleep. The hdd light blinks and everything looks like its on but the desktop does not ever show up again.

I am hoping that someone familiar with windows and hardware can tell me about some some diagnostics or tweaks that I need to make in order to get things up to speed.

Thank you all for your responses.

I have been told that laptops don't usually last much longer than 3 years . Can anyone comment on this please ?

It's BS. The life of a laptop basically depends on the care you take with it. Other than the obvious (dropping, etc.) the main reason laptops have shorter lives than desktops is because they aren't as expandable-and that really isn't 'life expectancy' issue but rather an 'obsolesence' issue. If you take reasonably good care of a laptop (clean the vents, don't abuse it, etc.) and don't try to run every new game that comes on the market then it should last you for 10 years, easily.

Hi, I have problem, almost all games I play don't run as fast as expected or they do this weird stutter where they will go from 30 fps - 10 every half second, and it seems to scale with games with higher fps go from 60 - 30 every half second and so on. I've had this problem for about a year now. My system spec's are as follows

I was also told my games should be running upwards of 60 fps. Oh and a couple good examples of the games I play range from Minecraft - Garrys Mod - Dead Island. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey,

Try to update your graphics card drivers if possible. If they are already updated, you can try to roll them back to a previous version: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows7/ht/roll-back-driver-windows-7.htm. I had a similar problem with my Nvidia graphics card and rolling back my graphics card driver fixed my problem.

Alternatively, you can monitor your CPU and GPU usage to see if any of them are being 100% utilized. I imagine most games are made with either dual core or quad core in mind, so your triple core CPU might be affecting the game.

So I bought a y700 thinking it would be a decent unit for doing some photoshop work and video editing....has NOT been the case. First problem is the display driver crashing and recovering....And if that was not bad enough, it seems the old version of the intel video drivers(530 gpu) has an incompatability with Adobe Camer raw, and there is not an updated new one compatable with the Lenovo unit. https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2007321 Additionally the wireless drivers are also flaky, dropping connection quite a bit. I tried to download the latest from Intel, but cannot install them because it refers me back to the older ones Lenovo released. My point is there are newer drivers to fix my issues, but I cannot install them because we are stuck using Lenovo approved versions which are WAY out of date. Anyone know a work around to install latest drivers outside Lenovo approved. I am not asking a lot from this laptop, just to work with some VERY basic functionality. Thanks and sorry to rant,Scott

Jus follow my steps currectly for installing updated INTEL GRAPHICS driver...... 1.Disable any ongoing network(simply disable internet-IMPORTANT)..2.Go to device manager->Display adapters->Intel HD 530->Uninstall driver & tick delete driver software->run it.....3.Reboot..4.Download intall this latest stable or Latest beta here...5.Reboot now you have installed latest driver by Intel...6.Reboot again now you can enable internet....( the reason i told u to disable internet because windows will automatically dowload some other unstable incompatible graphics driver and will create problem/or conflict with existing drivers)... U can use original intel drivers instead of out of date OEM drivers no problems  Lastly these steps does not only apply to intel graphics drivers it can be applied to all drivers(audio,WLAN,Touchpad etc) Report back CheersKamal

Hello,

Short Version:
My new computer is only running games at a max 20 FPS, on the lowest settings. I am unfamiliar with configuring hardware. Any ideas?

Long Version:
I bought this new computer this past November. And since day one it has never ran games to the level I expected. I have to turn games (like path of exile, and warframe) down to the lowest graphical settings to get a maximum of about 20 FPS (on a good day) It does not make sense because my friend's younger brother has a computer much worse than mine (confirmed by their dad who built that computer, mine is supposed to be far better) and he can run them on the highest settings with a minimum of 40-60 FPS.

I know that I do not have a great graphics card and it is an onboard one and that limits my CPU (so I have been told and when I have the money I would like to get a better one), but my friend's brothers computer has a worse onboard graphics card. :/

I don't really know much about changing settings for hardware or anything like that. Everything is basically the same... Read more

I have a computer that I believe was infected with the ZeroAccess Rootkit. Used MBAM and it actually installed and removed several trojans. I tried to run combofix (BEFORE GETTING ON THIS BOARD) and it stated I was infected with rootkit Zeroaccess, but then it stopped and rebooted computer. I have tried running AntiZeroAccess but it will not work and other programs will not install. I found several of the files associated with this rootkit and deleted the ones that were obviously not system files. It looks like this rootkit has attacked the TCP IP stack and I am lost as to what to do next. I've been working on computers for 12 years and have never experienced a rootkit like this one. I'm more of a networking (Cisco) guy and my expertise is tapped out on this one. Any help???

Hey guys,

Internet Speed: 144mbps

How long roughly will this take to complete?

If my arithmetic is halfway correct:

400 kb/s would be about 2.5 seconds for each MB.

Aka 2500 seconds for each GB

Aka about 42 minutes per GB

If your numbers are accurate and consistent---which may not be true.

Hello all,

This is a problem that I can't seem to figure out, even after multiple fixes. On my PC, I have Windows 7 64-bit installed, and I have a wireless router. The first one I used was an Iogear WiFi USB 2.0 Adapter Model #GWU523. The internet connection I have is the Comcast internet, with 12 Mbps. With that wireless adapter, I can sometimes get 10. The average would be about 6. I lived with that for a while, then saw a deal for a $10 wireless adapter, so I hopped on that to see if that would help. When I first installed that on a clean Windows 7 reinstall, I was able to get the 12 Mbps. The adapter is a Airlink 101 Ultra Mini Wireless N 150Mbps wireless adapter. The fresh Windows 7 install was on September 6, 2010. Up until last night, the speed tests always showed up as 10+ Mbps. So I was happy! But I reinstalled Windows 7 again last night, because my Windows Live Messenger didn't uninstall properly, so the only way I could get it to reinstall again was to wipe my hard drive and do a clean reinstall. So I did that, and now my speeds are even lower: no more than 4 Mbps at most. I am really confused Drivers are all up to date; I had DriverMax check. Sometimes I rollback the network drivers to see if this helps, but it doesn't. Thank you all for your help! However, I have spent the past day and a half uninstalling all the Sony VAIO Bloatware, and I have noticed an improvement. But there are some things that it continues to lag with. It says there are 94 processes, the second I open task manager CPU usage is around 50% and physical memory at 46%. Within a second the CPU usage drops to around 10% whilst the physical memory stays the same. Is this normal? With a few applications it seems like it hangs for a few seconds before continuing with its operation... just wondering if there is anything else I can do to clean it up a little? bb.workshop.ac.uk is our domain at work (fake one).

When you get this basically your getting the FQDN. This sounds like your building PC's with user names as the PC name and then the users are switchin places? NSLOOKUP does not resolve usernames at all it resolves IP's and Fully Qualified Domain Names.

Take a look at your machine name and have your coworker have a look at theirs...

This is one of the reasons I HATE nameing machine names after users the first PC swap you have a big problem.

Crysis 2 did not run greatly either and not brilliantly when put on high (lowest setting.) Deus Ex Human Revolution I experience low fps when many people are near and not perfect fps when nobody is near.

However other games like CSS, Payday the Heist, Magicka, Killing Floor, Flatout UC and some other games all seem to run fine. Call of duty seems to run very well but online I also experience fps drop below 50fps.

So I am having problems with my hardware causing hard locks on my PC, where only a manual shutdown will help.

I did everything software related until I figured out it was hardware when it froze when reinstalling windows and when it froze on memtest also.

I switched the GPU and it worked for 3 hours so I believed a RMA would solve it. When I had the RMA approved, just to make sure, I tested my system with another video card again and started memtest. It froze several times, so it could not be the GPU causing it.

I then managed to run prime95 for over 8 hours and one of the worker threads stopped after 6-7 hours with error "FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5 expected less than 0.4". Searching the web, it seems that this is a memory issue and that it can be caused by a a faulty unit, wrong voltages and/or timings amongst other things. Now I did notice that my mobo(latest BIOS) wasn't setting my memory timings and frequency correctly and I had to set it manually.

So I came here to ask something. Since the error happened in Prime95, what would happen if this was caused outside it? Would it lead to a hard lock on my system? If it did, then this error is definatly related to the hard freezes I get on my system, that can help once every 2 days, or 3 times in 1 hour. It's really random and unpredictable and the only way I can make it occur faster is by running memtest or Windows memory diagnostic tool.

A few things to consider:

1. What size is your pagefile?
2. Are you overclocking any of your components?
3. Run Memtest86+ for a minimum of 7 passes, or until you get errors from a bootable DVD or USB. This will test for defective RAM chips or RAM motherboard slots.

So I just received my Intel 240GB 520 SSD. My intention was to move the Windows, Program Files (x86), and Program Files folders to the SSD hoping that would basically give me the exact same setup except the programs and os launch off the SSD leaving the Users folder and everything else on my HDD.

After migrating the data (paragon software) I booted up on the SSD, the desktop was black it apparently couldn't be found, none of my settings were the same, none of the programs started automatically, directx was 'not found', it was definitely not what i expected, help with this would be great!

thanks

A:Transferred programs and os to SSD, not what I expected

i've tried to use cloning software with ssd's in the past and seen the exact same results as you describe using emc retrospec, similar software for migration.

I can only surmise it's to do with how ssd's manage information.

the only solution i found was to do a clean install, which i must say is recommended for an ssd, otherwise you may end up with odd things happening, you don't want windows trying to defrag an ssd that is suppose to be using trim instead due to it not realising it's on an ssd.

Often times people wish to migrate their OS which is fine if the hardware is the same, switching to an ssd changes things i'm not certain there is any migration software that works well with ssd's some say they support it but they end up with similar results to yourself.

Call your provider, and have them run a test download from their tech support headquarter... They can usually diagnose it. I have a rather simple question that I haven't been able to find an answer to.
Will socket 940 eventually be able to use 65nm procs? I know that the new desktop/server sockets coming out will have it.

I ask because I'm about to spend a lot of money for a dual socket 940 workstation. I'm starting off with 2 single core's but will eventually get 2 dual cores when they lower in price further.

Or is the nm change the reason for the socket change? Something like that I wouldn't know.

No. For anything with more then one socket on the board, you can only use Opterons & Opterons are moving to another form-factor this year.

Only Athlon64s will be able to use the Socket-940 interface from there one & they will not be able to use it with more then one socket (even though each socket will be able to house more then one core).

It's not quite easy to comprehend, I know.

Hi,

My 2nd post here :D

I am operating a Dell laptop, running Windows 7 Premium 64bit, 4GB DDR3 RAM, ATI Radeon Mobility 5470HD graphics adaptor. Anti-virus was avast, but is now Windows Security Essentials (explained below).

1> I was downloading Everest Ultimate Edition as my graphics card driver was crashing frequently. When selected to install, I was asked for administrator approval (which I gave). The installation never began (there was a pause in computers performance for about 3 seconds, it froze), and my avast (free edition) detected a virus "win32:vundo-ju", and immediately quarantined it (obviously, the download was a total scam). Looked good, I began a full system scan. Soon there was a avast prompt of blocking a "malicious site". This prompt came every 10 mins or so, so I knew the virus had done its job. I deleted the installation file.

2> I let the avast scan run. Meanwhile, I disconnected from the internet and began to fish around my disks. All seemed normal, other than C:\Windows\
The resown why I went to this drive was that when the malicious site prompt came, it was originating from an executable from that directory. Obviously, that executable was nowhere to be found. But there were a lot of folders that were definitely not supposed to be there. It just so happens, my hard-disk was changed on the 4th of May due to hardware issues. But in the directory, there were files and folders supposedly formed in 2009 (this laptop ... Read more

Edit:
I forgot to mention, MS Essential gave the comp a clean chit. Downloaded and running Immunet 5.0 (its scan ran for a good 24 hrs, though I admit I had to pause it a few times, needed to get work done, and it was heavy on the resources). Immunet got a virus out (Mozilla Thunderbird installation, got to be a negative), but thats it.

So I am sure the virus is out, but the changes it did are yet to be undone.

We all know that the new Radeon X1800 XT is coming out really soon but from what the benchmarks show it still doesnt quiet beat the Geforce 7800 GTX.. i would like to know what you people think cause ati clearly wasted these 5 months trying to catch up with the Geforce 7800 gtx instead they could have made a much better product, which means by now i'd say their no. 2.
I gotta admit though that the X1800 XT uses 16 pipelines compared to GTX's 24 and some how manages to get better benchmarks in some games. The only way this card is going to be a success is that the price range should be about 350 to 450 cause the last 7800 GTX i saw was for 460 US dollers.
What do you guys think
