Hi and welcome to TSG

Start> Computer > Double click the installed drive (C normally)

Top left corner > Organise > Folder and Search Options > View Tab

**Scroll down and check "Show hidden files and folders"

**Uncheck "Show protected Operating System files" > Click Apply

Find “$Recycle.bin” and delete it using Shift and Delete

I would recommend reversing the steps marked with **

Reboot and hopefully the issue is resolved.

Let us know the results of this

I'm a network admin for about 30 users. About 10 of them are having a problem with any new document in Word (both XP and 2003). A small hollow square appears in the upper left corner. They're unable to delete it, and it freezes the "File" button on the Menu bar. Sometimes it freezes Word totally. They are able to print existing documents opened in Explorer. Very annoying! Any thoughts?

Hiya! and Welcome to TSG!

As nobody has an idea yet what might have cause the issue (as it is unusual), maybe uploading a screenshot would produce some ideas to resolve the problem.

First backup any files you want off of the computer with an Ubuntu Live CD saving to an external USB HDD/Flash Drive.
If you have a Windows 7 DVD or Restore CD put that in the computer and choose your language and then Restore Your Computer.
If you do not have a disc, then you probably have a restore partition. Restart the computer on the logo screen when you see the message Press (Key) to Enter E-Recovery do so, this will restore your computer to Factory Defaults. Be sure to backup first.

Hi, suggests it's not seeing your disk at all - nothing to boot from.

Check your connections, check your disk - e.g. using a live boot disk or connect it to another PC.

If you can manage to read it again, run chkdsk on it.

My computer is about a year old now, built by me and my dad. Recently it's been having some issues though-- for a while I think it was over heating, causing it to reboot. At least I hope it was just overheating. One time when I booted up my computer it told me overclocking failed, which was odd because I hadn't messed with any of the settings (all still defaults).

But heres the major issue: If you boot it up, after the BIOS it'll give you a black screen with a blinking underscore up in the left corner. If you're quick enough you can get it to go into safe mode, etc. You can also choose which drive to boot from--- I found that it only gives you the black screen with certain drives. But, I did notice that its very slow when you have the "loading" screen for windows-- it'll slowly fade in and start loading, then it goes to a normal speed.

Specs:
IntelCore2CPU [email protected]
Nvidia 8800 GTS (640 MB)
4 GB RAM (although I can't use it all...)
Don't know much about my mobo except its a P5K

A:Black Screen + White Underscore in Upper Left Corner

I could be a memory issue. Try removing RAM one stick at a time and seeing if any of them are causing it. Then try them individually in each slot. It could be the motherboard if only one slot is faulty.

Hey I just went through something very similar. I found that my SATA cable connecting the hard drive to the motherboard had failed. I replaced it with a new SATA cable, and it booted right up. Try the cable first if you have one lying around, plus its a cheap solution. If you replace the cable and it still won't boot up, it might be your hard drive. Seeing as how your machine is that old, it could fail at any time.

Do you get anything on the screen when you turn it on?

Ok so there's a really old thread about this already. But it didn't solve my problem. When I boot vista, a little white square appears in the upper left corner. It's not my wallpaper. On the old thread they have resolved the problem as being an ATI GPU Driver problem, and the update fixed it. But here's my problem, I don't have an ATI GPU.

When I right click the little white sqaure I can open up its properties, and in the properties it has a name of some website. Shortly after I even read it a "close program" window comes up. I click on close and the sqaure dissapears until the next time I boot.

Leaving the white square on just messes with whatever programs Im running. For example: If im watching a movie in full-screen, it will randomly just exit out of full screen. It doesnt do that once the white sqaure is off.

Well thanx for hearing out my problem, any help would be great.

A:Warm upper left corner of the Portege

> My new protege has heating issue. upper left corner(power button area) is heating up pretty bad and doesn't cool down easy. Is this common for everyone, or is there anyway that i can reduce the heat?

I guess this is your first ?small? notebook which supports such big CPU/GPU performance. You will notice this on all small (~13?) notebooks. Why? Because the cooling modules are placed on the left and the whole warm air flows from this direction.
I?ve got U400 series. It?s 13? unit and the left area is warm too because of the cooling modules.

Furthermore the unit supports an overheating protection which means that the notebook would shut down automatically if the temperature is too high.
Does the notebook shut down automatically? No?
Well, in such case the temperature is ok and not too high.

Of course you can change the Win 7 power management settings in order to decrease the CPU and GPU performance which would lead to lower heat dissipation. This keep the temperature at lower level.

Question:
I would like to display in one of the frozen top row cells the address (or contents) of the cell currently showing in the upper left hand corner of the non-frozen screen as I scroll along. Again, I am not stopping to highlight the cell (or any cell; just scrolling along).

Hello there

So after installing and tweaking windows 8, some small annoyances remain. One of them that i encounter every day is as follows:
I have 2 monitors. Primary on the right, secondary on the left.
If i take my cursor up to the top left of the primary monitor, it gets "stuck" and will not move over to the left hand screen (secondary monitor). I believe this is caused by the APP bar which I have disabled as per (http://www.ghacks.net/2012/08/19/disable-windows-8-mouse-over-corner-interfaces/).
However the problem still remains. If i go aproximately 10 pixels down from the upper left hand corner, i can mouse over to the other screen fine. No menu comes up, my cursor just hits a wall. I have made sure both montior tops are in line in the screen resolution
screen.

I tried to shoot a video of it, but of course camstudio does not work in windows 8 (sigh).
steps to reproduce are, drag your mouse to the very top left corner with the intention of moving it to the second monitor.
How can i disable? I have tried the GPO setting for EdgeUI which creates the registry key ( DisableTLcorner) in the link above.

As a bit of background, if one is constantly using VNC to manage other peoples computers, I do not want to steal focus from their mouse by dragging my cursor over the centre of the screen. So i bring my mouse cursor to the very top (title bar area) and try
and move between screens. Obviously this is a windows 8 "feature". Anyone else a... Read more

A:Cannot mouse over upper left hand corner on dual monitors

Um no, I have never in my life found that installing a monitor driver ever fixed anything.

there is nothing in the application log that has anything to do with this problem as its a mouse event. No event is obviously generated when i am moving the mouse around the screen.

you cannot reproduce? I have installed a few more windows 8s and the problem exists on every single one.

here is a video of the event. Finaly got camstudio working properly, just have to do the whole screen. in the video, i try and move the mouse in the upper left and lower left of the screen. the two screens are different wallpapers to make it easier to see.
I have managed to find a service that allows uploads, the video file is here so you can see what im talking about. I hope that makes it clearer.

A white square measuring 2" x 2.5" appears at the top left of my screen only after the computer is unlocked. It does not appear after reboots. Reboots are the only way to clear it. It appears after I unlock the computer when I manually lock it or when it's locked by a screensaver.

I've read some other threads on there about white squares appearing and have tried suggestions on them with no luck. This one seems a bit different.

A:[SOLVED] White Square at top left of dekstop only after computer lock

I see that you are using Rocket Dock? Try disabling it lock the computer than unlock to see if Rocket Dock (If that is what you are using) is causing the issue.

If that is not the problem update your graphics drivers by going to the manufacture of your computer's website or the manufacture of your graphics card.

Hi,

This is my first post, so forgive me for any lack of information. I am running Windows Vista Service Pack 2 on a Dell Inspiron 530. We had a power surge while the computer was running, and Vista will not start up. I tried F8, F10, and F11, but only one outcome occurred: a black screen with a small red rectangle near the top-right and an "!" directly to the right of the square. Also, there was an arrow pointed down at the bottom of the screen. I am a huge noob, so step-by-step instructions will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Most of the time if I refresh it will go away, but once I load another page it does it again. It really varies from barly noticable to extremely noticable. I'll post some pictures to show.

The issue is this, when the game is loading and running (game engine) there is a flashing black square about an 1 1/2" in the top right hand corner of the screen. I've tried adjusting settings in the game to the lowest levels, installing older drivers for the graphics card, to changing out the HDMI cable for the standard VGA connection on the monitor.

I built this computer earlier this summer and have run various 3D games without any issues like this including Call of Duty 4, Crysis plus older titles and new demos.

Anyway this flashing black square makes trying to focus on the game impossible.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

I've scoured the net trying to fix this bug and found all your posts about this problem, none with an actual fix. The problem will come up again at some point but not for a while.

Check the hidden items box under the view tab in your foldergo to C:\... Users... Select your user and open up AppdataDelete the local folder only.
Hopefully we'll get a legit fix to this problem from Microsoft or a computer wizard.

I am using Corel Draw Suite 11(CD), and recently my cursor started turning into a black square when I mouse over icons. It is not monitor or PC specific - it happens on all of my computers with various monitors. I have tried changing resolutions, refresh rates, etc. All PC's are P4's, with one being a new 3.2 with a 128 PCIe video card. The rest are 2.4 with 32 MB video cards and all are Dells.
I am able to turn the selection cursor into a crosshair after I open a file, but at first opening of CD, it is still a black square. CD has the latest SP, also.

This is my first time posting here. Please forgive my ignorance, as I'm super not tech-savvy at all.

I'm going to try to explain what's going on as best as I can to see if anyone can throw me a bone here.

I have a Dell Inspiron 531, about 4 years old, and it's worked just fine up until yesterday.

I plugged my Canon camera into the front USB port to grab some photos off of it, when my computer froze. I had to hold down the power button to get it to shut off.

I restarted, and found that after the Dell logo comes up, the screen goes black except for a white cursor that flashes in the upper right hand corner. This has been going on since last night.

The only two options it gives me appear during the Dell logo screen when I can hit either F12 for the boot menu or F2 for startup menu. Once the screen goes black and I see that cursor, key punching does nothing.

I'm not sure if this is worth mentioning but, at one point, I somehow found myself at a memory diagnostics menu and it ran and found no errors but then froze at 99%. I have no idea how I was able to do that, and I can't find it again.

Sorry if I left out any info. Anyone have an idea on what I can do to start troubleshooting?

I have a Dell computer with windows xp.
Lately, whenever I turn on my computer (only under my name on my dell-meaning my daughter doesn't have this problem under her name) I have a big black square in the middle of the screen.
And when I am done surfing the net when the computer goes back to the desktop page of my computer the big black square is replaced by whatever the last screen i was on was.
I mean it's no longer black, but if I was say, reading an article on the internet, where the black square was, is now portion of the article.
How do I get rid of this?

my other question is, sometimes when I want to click on things on the internet, I have to hit the "shift" button for it to work. How do I undo this? Why does it make me do this in the first place??
Thanks for all your help

In windows explorer, a bunch of folder icons, and internet shortcut icons, are showing as just black squares.

Aside from the internet shortcuts, most of the black folders are ones I don't have permission to view, but some of them I do have permission to view.

It only affects the smallest size of icon, not the medium or large ones. EDIT: Actually, the large ones show their icon, but they have a black square in the lower left.

Sometimes the black squares (all kinds) in the right pane of explorer flicker, but the ones in the left tree view pane do not flicker.

These persist through reboots.

Hello All,

Recently I built a new PC Show Us Your Rig [6]

I am having a display issue with it. The graphics card is an R7 260X 2GB overclocked edition from Saphire.

Now these issues don't happen regularly but it is worrying so I'd rather deal with it sooner than later

Sometimes in game (like Arma 3 ) and I occasionally see it on desktop. parts of my monitor only a small area usually top right I can see image being distorted it is usually white/black squares last around 10 seconds or so. I have two monitors and it happens to both monitors so I'd rule out a monitor problem.

Now today I was watching Top Gear on BBC Iplayer towards the end of the show my screen just went blank (black) I could only hear sound for around 10-20 seconds and then that went of to.. I'd had to force shutdown. This also happened to me the other day when I was changing HDMI cable (I have two monitors, and sometimes I switch to TV HDMI)

Here are the idle temps for the hardware (according to CPUID)

Graphics Card = 36c (96F)
CPU = 30c (82F)
Mainboard 111C (231F)

in game GC is around (50/60c) have not seen it get higher than this
CPU can get upto 40c

I have a 650w Corsair PSU unit. Also I have 3 case fans, two front, one top, so enough cooling.

Anyone know the likely cause? (I am guessing it's GC)

PS: All drivers are up to date and room temperature can be quite high 20c (I always have heater on)

A:Screen going blank, little white - black/square dots..

could also be ram related, a dodgy stick can cause image issues.
I found that out after being 100% sure my card was duff got it RMA'd and the new one had the same issue... derp!

try the latest beta driver from AMD see if that helps. Lots of people seem to be having driver issues with the new r7 and r9 cards.

not sure if this is a virus or not.

ran a virus program and 2 spyware removers, and still here.

a small, icon sized, black square with a thin green border is on my monitor. It stays on top of everything. If I point to it with my mouse, the mouse pointer changes to the standard hand with index finger pointing, but clicking (double, right or left, etc) has no effect. It is annoying more than anything, as it is always on top. always in same spot, just over 1/2 way across from left to right, and almost 3/4 way up from bottom. when you click on it, it gets the focus away from other programs running. when you click, the border changes temporarily to a pink or purple colour (not sure what it should be called)

Win XP home edition; no sp2, but keep everything else updated. am behind a router which is connected to standard cable modem. various off the shelf software.

any ideas what it is?

A:weird icon sized black square on monitor

Dunno know, did you check the task manager to see what was running, look to see what programs are installed? When did it appear, can you relate it to anything you did????

With XP, you always want to have a back up and restore the system to that condition prior to the problem. Sure beats trying to out guess XP for openers.
My first reaction with any problem in XP, restore the lastest backup, go from there.

1) I just wanted to check out EZ FLASH utility for the first time; I had this motherboard for 2 years and I wanted to upgrade to the fastest CPU it supported but I had to upgrade my BIOS. Again, EZ FLASH is something I've never checked out before so I thought it would be OK just to go into the utility without flashing. At the time, I didn't have a diskette with BIOS. So I go into EZ FLASH then obviously, it asked for diskette or CD-ROM. I didn't have it at the time, so I simply hit the restart button and rebooted the computer

2) After that my display has a big black square on the top right corner almost 1/5 the size of the screen; it shows up the moment the BIOS Logo shows up so I know it's not the operating system. I also tried loading default settings and rebooted. The black square was still there.

3) I thought maybe the BIOS may have gotten corrupted so I flashed to the latest version 1019 (from 1008) using EZ FLASH. After that, I still have the black square after doing that.

4) I tried clearing RTC RAM using the jumper and hope this will fix it but again, the black square is still there!

PLEASE HELP!! I have a big black square on my screen and I can't work like this.

A:BIG BLACK SQUARE after EZ FLASH ASUS P4C800 Deluxe

Is it the place where you usually see the "Energy Star" or other pretty logos? Does EZ Flash let you change the logo thing? Maybe it cleared out the bitmap and you need to put something in there to make it work..

I bought a replacement LCD for my neice's Compaq Presario CQ50-139WM. I installed it carefully. (I even reinstalled it two more times!) Now, the Windows desktop only uses most of the display, with a 3" bar on the right side and a 1/2" bar on the bottom.

It appears that the desktop is nearly square. I have a Mobile Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Family. The only two resolution options are 1024x768 and 800x600. Both options fill up the same space. It's like it gave me a smaller monitor than what I actually have.

Further, the bottom black bar stretches out the mouse curser and start button. THe start button bottom streaks over the 1/2" black bar, and when I get the cursor at the bottom of the desktop, it streaks over the 1/2" black bar also.

These black bars are occurring BEFORE Windows boots up. The black screen on startup has a Compaq logo, and it's clear that everything is shifted to the left.

I've made sure that I've updated everything that is possible, but I suspect it's not a software issue. Any ideas?

A:Replaced LCD on laptop, now I have black bars and square screen!

Have you updated the BIOS? You may need a new screen. You can RMA it and they will take it back. It may be a common thing and will get an answer faster if you call HP. Hope this helps.

I recently bought an Inspiron 7559 laptop and then decided to clone the HDD with a Sandisk 1TB SSD. I also added another 8GB main memory. I replaced the drive and the PC worked just fine.
After a few days, I quick formatted the HDD and put it back in as a Data D drive. The day I did that Dell upgraded my BIOS and on reboot soon after a square block of white area appeared on the top left quadrant of either of my screens, the laptop or the U2415 (also brand new.) If I move between the screens then the other does not show the anomaly.
If I right click on the task bar and bring the desktop up the block gets painted over/filled with the background. However if I start an app, say a browser the block re-appears. I did Dell diagnostics which passed all the components and then also diagnostics via the BIOS and that also did not show any problem. I decided against the longer diagnostic for now.
There does not seem to be any issues but it would be good to solve it...maybe something came loose when I opened the back and replaced the SSD or the HDD.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I have a weird issue that is becoming a frustration on my system. Some of my icons are being replaced by a black square icon. I have flushed icon cache, rebuilt icon cache, ran SFC, tried to re-assign the icon and a few other things, but they still exist.
It seems to happens with the smaller sized icon because if I view in medium or larger size icon view they appear correct. I also tried viewing them through a program called Real World Cursor Editor and they appear fine. It is only in the Win 8.1 explorer that they appear to be black squares. If I am not mistaken, they also seem to be increasing in numbers when displaying. So I am not sure if there is an issue with explorer displaying a certain size icon or not. I have checked my system thoroughly with anti-virus programs and this is a well guarded system, I found none.
The system is a very well maintain one and used daily for many different uses from gaming, graphics to research. I don't see anything out of the norm in the events either about this icon issue and I have come to a bit of confusion why it is happening. As well as, only in certain viewing sizes. I will post an image below that shows 2 views of the same folder using MS Win 8.1 browser and also the Real World Cursor Editor program view. The icons are showing black squares only in MS browser. Any help would be greatly appreciated if anyone has had this issue and has repaired it.

My first post here as I am totally confused as to what is happening to my computer!

I have a Dell laptop Studio 14z with 4gigs of ram, 512mg graphics, i7 processor, etc. Plenty of power for what I do which is mostly word doc, ppt, occasional photo and video editing. I usually use chrome for web browsing and avast for virus control.

Long story short, about a month ago, I came back to my laptop, moved the mouse to awake the screen and in the top left corner was a black with a blue border. I usually restart my computer and its gone, sometimes I simply ignore it, come back a few hours and its gone. I have tried Ctrl+Alt+Del and ending a few processes I was unfamiliar with but the screen remains. It is not there every time, but frequently is.

I didn't make any changes to my computer shortly before the screen arrived to my knowledge but my gmail account was hacked a week or two ago so I have gotten concerned it might be a key logger or something of the like.

Any help yall could provide would be immensely useful! Thanks a lot!

Good evening, I have had this issue just recently. I use 1920X1080 with a radeon 4850HD graphics card. Everything was just fine, however a black bar has appeared on the left side only. I had plugged my cable into the tv to play a game, and when i replaced it back into the monitor the bar appeared..

I would also like to note that this issue only happens on this resolution. Any other resolution works like a charm. I have used google search and none of the suggestions worked for me. I have 2 hard drives with windows on them, and the issue happens on both devices. I have also used the monitors menu to slide the screen over, but it did not avail. New drivers/rollbacks/uninstalls did not help

Could anyone help me out here? I could provide a picture if needed.

Thanks and have a great week!

I'm not sure if this is the proper place to post this, but whenever my PC is left idle for more than 8 or so hours, it will randomly black screen with no cursor. CTRL ALT DEL does nothing, CTRL Shift ESC does nothing and the only way to fix it is to hard reset my computer. It is happening on almost a daily basis now and I really want to try and fix the issue before resorting to a fresh install of windows.

It seemed for a while like a explorer.exe failure, and when the task bar and windows icon become unresponsive, if I kill explorer, I can occasionally make it black screen. I have tried almost every explorer crash fix I could find and it is still happening with the same frequency. I have tried sfc /scannow, I've tried the registry hacks to delete explorer from Image File Executable Options, I've updated drivers and nothing has prevented or altered the consistency of black screens.

It wasn't the normal one I've seen quite a few times so I alt f4 closed it and immediately ran my AVG virus scan. That found nothing so I ran Malwarebytes which found 4 infected files. Two were in the registry and two were in my temporary internet files...I believe. Then I had it remove them and it said I needed to reboot to safely remove the files. I did that and when the computer started back up, it showed the initial Sony Vaio screen and then it goes straight into a black screen with a blinking cursor at the top left corner. The fan in my computer will run pretty loudly for about a minute and then slow back downto normal. At this point I'm not able to do anything. None of the F keys do anything. I tried ctrl alt del and that has no effect either. I can't get into safe mode or recovery console or anything like that. I've been researching google for the last hour on this and all the fixes involve just going into safe mode or using a repair cd, which I do not have. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks.

From time to time the left side of the Start menu (Above 'All programs') is black and I don't have access to programs that way. I can still access e.g. IE from the quick lunch. After reboot the start menu is working again.
Does anyone know what is going on? And could this mean something else is wrong? After reboot the quick lunch needs to be enabled again
Thanks

A:Left side of Start menu is black

Do this: Left-click the task bar>Click "Properties">In the window that comes up labeled "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" click the Start Menu tab>Click "Classic Start Menu">Click "Apply">Click "OK".

Now test the start menu under the same circumstances where you were seeing the problem you reported in your above post. Does the problem still occur?

Can somebody PLEASE tell me how the hell to get rid of them? I've already tried stretching the screen horizontally but the desktop icons go inside the black bars and the black bars still stay there

A:Those black bars on left and right side of your screen!

By using the monitor adjustments. If it's a 14 or 15" older monitor you are probably stuck with it.

I have checked this on a couple boards, but haven't ran into a response as of yet. Thought I would give it a go here on techguy.org.

My current computer system (Dell XPS Laptop) has recently run into a bit of a monitor issue.
When I first turn on the system, the monitor is relatively ok. But within a few minutes the monitor will begin to fade (darken) more and more as time passes. The fading starts at the left side of the screen, leaving the right side primarily bright.

During the initial startup, I also notice a subtle flicker occurring. But that tends to subside slightly over time. Not completely but the darkness of the monitor increases more and more. It never goes completely black and I can still "See" everything but the left side becomes increasingly difficult to view, compared to the right.

Could this be in relation to the inverter, or is it possibly a full monitor issue? I would like to change out the inverter, if in fact this is the projected issue. But I would hate to purchase and spend the time reinstalling that piece of equipment if in fact a full monitor issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi this is very hard to explain ... I have a 1 year old Acer Aspire 3610 laptop with Windows XP which I use most evenings and has always been fine. I turned it on yesterday and as soon as it lit up the left quarter of the screen was black then there was about half a centimeter of 'normal' screen with another centimeter thick of black-perfectly straight, from top to bottom. Once Windows was fully loaded and the 'log-on' screen was up, the black parts were still there. Now I have internet explorer open which is now smaller and fits perfectly into the 'normal' section of the screen, the curser arrow only goes as far as the start of the first black section, not past it and in the half centimeter section between the two black areas I can see a 'duplicate strip' of the internet explorer page I'm viewing.

In addition, the toolbar at the bottom with the start menu is about a centimeter up from the bottom of the screen and looks like it has multiple trails under it - bit difficult to explain what I mean but it's as if there are several of them, one on top of the other and when I put the curser arrow down there it stretches. I am using the computer now so it's operating fine as far as I can see but I can't get the screen back to normal. Any help would be appreciated, I wondered if it was possible that the recent storms could have caused this as it was plugged into the electric at the time?!

Quite often when you move to the right theres the black curtain contain 4 or so icons, and the same to the left with previous pages.
WHY ?
Theres been precious little that has impressed me about Windows 8 so far. Nothing that I can think of actually. But this has me in a rage. Anyway to switch it off ? People are supposed to LOVE the metro look. Not me* - and that is a colossal understatment.
*I actually know 4 people who are running this "preview" - 3 hate it, and the other says he thinks it's "OK"

A:Those annoying black curtains jumping in from left and right

That's the characteristic of Windows 8, so don't bother it.

Hello
My name is Malcolm
I have Windows XP Home Edition on my computer, But in the start menu the left hand side has gone Black, it was suggested to me that it might be my Web Cam, so I have gone through Add & Remove and taken all the programs off for this and unplugged the Web cam, Sadly I am not having much success in getting the Start Menu back to Normal.
Has anyone had this problem before and could you please help me out if you can.
Regards
Malcolm

A:Left side of Star Menu is Black

Hi Malcolm, and welcome to TSF.

Whatever happened, it may be that some of your system files were corrupted.

Try this first.

Click >> >> run >> and type sfc /scannow (note the space after sfc) >> click ok or press enter. This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.
In all likelihood you will be prompted to insert the Windows XP CD.

It may take a while but leave it to run until its finished.

Let me know how it goes.

Actually, the image is condensed in the horizontal axis. The whole image is there, just condensed. Vertically it is fine and horizontally it's much too great for the little adjustment knobs.

It's a 1024x768 VGA era 1996 (don't laugh) and was working well till I got a laptop. I believe it was still working well even after a tech installed a router and got the laptop up and running.

Then a friend came over to set things up to network so the desktop and laptop could see each other's disk drives. That works great.

But somewhere along the way the display on the old monitor got condensed horizontally.

The only thing I can think of is that the new laptop has a wide screen for displaying movies. Is it possible that the old desktop is confused and thinks it has a wide screen now? And so it is only using a portion of it?

That may not be technically possible but there is some logic to it.

Also I tried to simply re-install a video driver but it kept saying it couldn't find one that was acceptable. It looked on the C drive of course, then I tried the very old floppies that came with the desktop in 1996 but it didn't like what it found.

Then I tried the CD Windows ME came on. Obviously I don't know what I'm doing.

Thanks, Peter

A:Left & Right 2" of Monitor Display are Black

You can only load the video drivers for the video adapter chipset that is fitted.

Therefore you need to know what the chipset is, and use Google to fnd the appropriate drivers.

However, you say you have a laptop as well now. Why not plug the monitor into the external screen port on the laptop and see if the problem goes away? If the problem remains, the screen needs servicing, which is likely to be uneconomic at that age.

When I turn it on it goes to a black screen with only the cursor blinking in the top left corner. I can't do safe mode, nothing. It's stuck in this mode. The only think I can access is the IBM Access button and that does no good.

A:Thinkpad won't boot Win XP. Black w/cursor in top left only..Help!

Many things can cause this condition and some are specific to each manufacturer and model, I suggest going to the Lenovo website to look for answers for that particular model.

Some basics

1. This issue may occur if you have a CD, a DVD disk in your CD, DVD, or USB device plugged in when you start the computer.
2. If USB in the bios is set to be bootable, disable it.

Did you install any drivers or software recently??

Okay so, I have had a samsung N135 mini laptop for a year and a few months & just recently I turned it on and after the samsung logo comes up it goes to a blank black screen with a white blinking cursor at the top left side of the screen. And when I try to go into safe mode it brings me directly back to that black screen. ALT+CTRL+Delete does not work! And when I press system recovery it goes to the black screen, any ideas on what I should do before going to get the hard drive replaced? (If thats the problem) feedback would be nice, thanks <3

A:Black screen, blinking cursor at the top left side.

Hello and welcome to TSF.

It does sound like you may have a dead hard drive. Try following these instructions to test it: HD Diagnostic

Good luck and let us know if you have any other questions.

So I have a HD TV 1080P and the show is 4:3 aspect ratio that is why there are black lines on the right and left of the screan.

But the edges seem to be fuzzy and have artifacts. Some times on edges it red like it bleeding in from sun exposure. It is if the video camera the cameraman are using had problem at the edges but does not show up on a 4:3 aspect ratio do to the edges cut out but on a HD TV 1080P it show up.

I cannot use the set top box to zoom in or stretch the screen has people look really really really really fat ( and they are not ) or the picture on the top and bottom is cut off.So I cannot zoom in or stretch the screen .

And doing nothing I get black lines on the right and left of the screan and the edges seem to be fuzzy and have artifacts.

Why is that and what should I do?

Some shows for what ever reason have letterbox a black line on the right and left and top and bottom .Why is that?

On my TV tuner card watching it on my 1080P monitor it is worse the big black lines right and left on screan and on the the edges seem to be fuzzy and have artifacts.
Is it do to week computer and I have to get a new computer? It is like that on my TV set up stars in the house a big HD TV 1080p.

A:when watching a SD show black lines right and left on screan

Could be several answers depending on the source material. If the TV is supplied a 4:3 input, the TV creates the black bars. They are not affected/altered by the input signal.

A:black screen with someting blinkin at top left corner

It's not booting to your Hard Drive. You can set the boot order in your BIOS. It is either F1, F2. Delete, F5, sometimes F10. HP usually uses F10, try that first.

Then set your boot order as follows:

CD/DVD first, Hard Drive second, then it does not matter after that.

Also, in your BIOS you will be able to see if your Hard Drive is being detected, if not, try unplugging the power and Data cables and plugging them back in, HP's are notorious for dropping the Hard Drive, you have to buy new SATA cables constantly. You may need to do this.
