The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

I had a non-genuine copy of Ms Office installed on my computer, and have now purchased a genuine copy. Uninstalling the old (non-genuine) copy is impossible because it doesn't have an uninstaller, and it doesn't even show in Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs. So I just installed my genuine copy in a different folder in Program Files, so that the non-genuine copy wouldn't interfere with the newly installed genuine copy.

The problem is that even though I tried opening Ms Word or Excel directly from the newly installed folder and not from the old link to the old version, it still gives me a message (like before) that says "Get Genuine Office - This copy of Office is not genuine".

How do I get rid of the old (non-genuine) Ms Office if I am unable to uninstall it? Please don't tell me to work on the registry - I don't want to touch the registry because I'm not a computer pro, and I won't know what I'm doing. I just want to get rid of the message that says get genuine Office.

I am using Windows XP Home.

Thank you

Wow. After using this new Dell business computer (Vostro 270) for 2 weeks, to suddenly have that message appear in the lower-right corner was awful. Running a check utility from Microsoft brought me to a page that said to pay up $149. I called Dell and they said oh, we've seen this with some Microsoft updates -- be careful with those. So I used a System Restore point, and got rid of that Windows 7 Not Genuine message. (I ran complete system scans with Microsoft's System Essentials and Malwarebytes, and no virus was found.) I've used Windows since release 3.1 (pre-Windows 95), and have always scoffed at the Mac fans. No longer. I am a programmer by profession. The integration of this system with my XP computers was a nightmare. File permissions has been a nightmare. And now this. For business purposes I still need a few Windows machines, but for everything else I'm switching to Mac. This machine has wasted so much of my time to set up. Bitter? You bet.

I'm totally agree with you Mrwsf, i bought an loptop with window 7 Pro like 7/8 months ago. I bought cause it's not costly as much Mac is but $600 on this window 7 it was waste i guess cause now i am having so many problem you can't even think about it. Good thing is i still have my Mac Pro.

Besides the fact that this is really upsetting, I am now get a message that my VISTA is not genuine. It is, I have the sticker and everything, and had been fine until my lovely hacker friend lied to me.

Will uninstalling the "hacked" Word fix this?

Hello and welcome whistler have you tried contacting Microsoft re this problem they are usually helpful over the phone.
When I was over there a while ago my brother had bought a DVD supposedly an old Dell one from EBay and it kept coming up as that. My brother was at his wits end when I got there but a call to Microsoft and they gave me a code for this version maybe if you explain to them the problem they will sort it for you.

Ok tried the best title i could think of to summarize the problem. I'm working on a family members laptop for them to get their laptop up to date on windows and maybe upgrade to windows 10. But the update keeps failing the troubleshooter fails chkdsk and sfc /scannow do not help. I can not install the updates manually i get the error error_sxs_component_store_corrupt and in windows updater i get 80073712 error.

To top it off i occasionally am getting a pop up on her laptop stating that her windows is not genuine. Although it is the same os that came installed on her laptop. She has very little knowledge of using any type of pc's so do not think she has ever updated this before me. She did not even have an antivirus on it until i installed Avira for her.

I updated her laptop before and got them all to install but a few. The ones left are kb2977759 kb3004469 kb306480 and finally kb976932. It says that kb2538242 and kb2538243 are installed and windows updates when i shutdown and they do not show under updates when i cold boot but when updater fails to complete they pop back in under updates.

I am hoping and praying some one here can help me sort it out for her i'm on day 4 of trying to get this done and ready to pull my hair out. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

I have a computer that I bought from Dell about one year ago. Tonight, an icon in the taskbar tells me that there are some updates ready to be installed. I click on it to have in installed and after a while the installation freezes. I tried to restart the PC... but could not do it. I had to cut off the power to shut it down. When I rebooted, I received a notice saying that my operating system was not genuine and that I would no longer be able to receive updates. I am one hundred percent certain that my operating system is genuine... but, what should I do now???

Hi!

Just when I was about to download XP-mode and virtual pc the micro$oft site recognised my system to be non-genuine. Now this is, by all accounts, a load of bull$h!t - the computer is less than 5 months old and came with the system preinstalled.
Still the question of further action remains. That's totally unacceptable that a completely valid and legal copy is recognised as non-genuine.
Furthermore - oh what an irony - my previous computer running pirated windows never had the issue.. I'd really hate to resort to piracy again just to use my completely legal copy of the software to its full extent.

this "NoSaveSettings" registry value controls many settings in the explorer shell, so it is most likely your issue.

Others have stated some security softwares can cause these issues also, by locking settings, so malware cannot make changes, but neither can you.

OK first of all I have a Dell XPS 420 with an nVidia 8800GTS(not the stock GPU)
I have 6gigs of ram(2 sticks of stock ram(2gigs)
a 850W PSU(I added it later)
and it has a Core 2 Quad Q6600
I am running Vista Premium 64-bit OEM (I swapped it from 32 bit)

So lately I have been having BSODs at least every night. Many times it is when I am not even using it and happens after i go to bed for the night. I have realized that I leave it on to long and lately I have been turning it off when I go to school at 7:50 until after I get home at 4pm. This hasn't helped and it got worse when I added 4 gigs of ram. I have read around and apparently dells have problems with their motherboards. This seems likely but before I drop the money to get a new one(this one is having other issues) I need to be sure. If anymore information is required just let me know and Ill get it to you.
If at all possible I need to know tonight because I want the parts to get here in time for my friend to come over this weekend to help me out with putting it together.

In case I do need the new mobo here is the one my friend picked and the case that I will need (because Dell cases are proprietary and wont fit most mobos)

My desktop recently started freezing for no apparent reason that I know of. The screen will just lock up and I have to restart with the power button. That doesn't always work either and sometimes I cant even boot into safe mode. I have not added any new hardware in 3 years but there is a new icon in the bottom right tray that says "Safely Remove Hardware". This has just recently appeared within the last few weeks. The only thing we use it for is web surfing and my son plays Minecraft on it. I think there may be a good possibility that maybe he did something or downloaded something bad for his game.
There have been bsod's 1 or 2 times and if I remember right, maybe something about memory dump.
Please help. Scared something major might have happened.
Thanks

I had a Dell printer in the closet for 2 years that came free with my Dell xp desktop. I didn't use it because I have a HP printer that works great.

Now, I want to use the dell printer with my laptop in another room and it doesn't seem to work with Vista.

I downloaded the drivers from dell.com and unzipped them and it still won't work.
Am I missing something? I also ran windows update and it says everything is updated,

Hi

My sister, knowing I've successfully sought help on Techguy before, has gone on holiday and left me with her laptop, which is refusing to boot up. Here is what I've witnessed so far:

Boot up fails and presents (very quickly) a BSOD with the message:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The initial session process or system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000000 (0xc0000034 0x001005c4).
The system has been shut down.

(I only managed to capture this message by rebooting the laptop, pressing F8 and disabling automatic restart).

Next boot: run Startup Repair, which returns with the message:

Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

View problem details gives me the following:

Problem signature
Problem Event Name: StartupRepairV2
Problem Signature 01: ManualRepair
Problem Signature 02: 6.0.6000.16386.6.0.6000.16386
Problem Signature 03: 6

Problem Signature 09: WrpRepair
Problem Signature 10: 2
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033

Where do I go from here ??? The terms ManualRepair and CorruptVolume would seem like something I should worry about.

Can anyone offer me any tips please ??? Do these problem details mean anything to anyone ???

Here's hoping for another Techguy success...

I recently changed my hard drive and reinstalled my vista (which came installed with computer). About 3 weeks later I now have a black screen with awindow that asks me to type another product key or use reduced function to buy new product.

So I call microsoft and they said the key has been blocked because it has been activated 2 many times and I need to contact gateway. Gateway in return said that there is nothing they can do. From what I was told is that it is a generic key from gateway which would explain why it has been used so many times.

Why should I be forced to buy a new OE when none of this is my fault? Also after all the updates I went thru in the last 3 weeks did it finally decide my key was bad?

This is frustrating no one wants to take blame, typical big buisness

A:not genuine vista?

I am really sorry that this is happening, but this is what I would do.

I would call the number that you used. Explain the situation in a clam, polite manner. If you do not get results ask to speak to the next highest level. If that does not work, call gateway again, take names.

In a certified letter to top Managment at MS, give the facts: Mr Jones at Gateway said blah, blah , blah.

I have had many encounters with big business, through my job.

Top manag will take your letter, give it to a subordinate, and say "Take care of this" The subordinate does not want his boss to get another letter, and he will take care of you.

Good Luck

I have had my laptop (compaq presario) for a couple of years now, its due to be replaced but I can't afford to get the one I want so I have decided to just wait it out until the bank fills up a bit! So I have had a massive problem with my wireless not working for about a month, something that HP did a factory recall on but not for my particular model (something about it not costing enough in the first place to warrant their help, or I wasn't important enough because I am dependent on breathing air, unlike them). However this is not where my problem lies, I am a massive fan of football manager however something went wrong with the game and I decided that I would uninstall and reinstall to see if that would resolve the issue. After uninstallation I rebooted my system however upon signing back into vista it prompts me to say that my product number is invalid and my vista is not genuine, providing me with the option of inputting a new number, purchasing a new number or contacting HP. Of course my internet doesn't work so two options are out the window, and if I input the p/n on the sticker on my laptop it says its invalid.

I purchased the laptop with vista on it and I haven't changed it in anyway, so I am really stuck!

Your copy of Vista is coming up as not genuine since you can't activate it online when you don't have an internet connection. You need to activate it via telephone or wait untill you have an internet connection again.

Click Start.
Right-click Computer.
Select Properties.
At the bottom of this window, click Activate Windows.

You will need an upgrade/full key...you can upgrade Vista Ultimate to 7 Ultimate with an upgrade key or clean install 7 and use a full key...

If you want to use it right now than you can follow this tutorial to extend your trail to 120 days and then enter a key when you buy it around October 22nd

Hello Jake, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It sounds like you may be in reduced functionality mode. If you are unable to get Vista to activate online as normal, then you can do a phone activation instead. Believe it or not, I had to do a phone activation when I added a new monitor to the system a couple of years a go as well.

Hope this helps,

Hello, I am working on a friend's Dell Inspiron 1750 with Vista Basic, I don't know any other specs right off. He brought it to me because it wouldn't boot and startup repair couldn't fix it. He said He just renewed his McAfee.

Normal, Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Net, Safe Mode with Command, Last Known Good Configuration, and Disable Driver Signature Enforcement all fail with STOP 0x7B before rebooting (safe mode BSOD's right after CI.DLL, I tried replacing it with a copy from the repair disc, but it didn't help)

I ran Windows Defender Offline, it found some adware but thats it.
Startup Repair Fails with "BadDriver"
System Restore Failed with "Catastrophic Failure" for all 4 points I tried
sfc /scannow wont run something about a pending repair
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows found corrupt files but couldn't fix them

I have tried changing between ATA and AHCI

All Dell Diagnostics Passed
I only have access to a repair disc and I don't know what his backup habits are so clean Install is a last resort

Any Idea What I Should try Next? Thanks
-Brad

A:[SOLVED] Dell Inspiron 1750 Vista Won't Boot

Hello Shadow4.2,

Your error, INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE, can be caused by many things.

I suggest running Memtest86+ for at least one pass, then run the HDD manufacturer's drive diagnostic software.

I suggest downloading the UBCD. If you do PC repair on a regular basis, it will come in handy as it contains most HDD diagnostics, Multiple memory diagnostics and other tools...

You can download the latest .iso from the link in my signature.

I wouldn't put too much stake in the Dell Diagnostics. It only runs a cursory memory test and a S.M.A.R.T. HDD self test... A full media scan is recommended at this point.

Well this is probably the 9,645st thread about this topic but mine seems to be that much more difficult and weird.

So like everyone else I just bought a new computer with Vista 64bit already installed and after months of giving it a chance Im disgusted with its RAM performance especially compared to XP, and since im a 3d graphics artist this is HUGE for me and no way around it.

More specifically I have a Dell XPS630
Dual Core 3ghz Intel Processors
4GB RAM
512MB SL 9800GT Nvidia GeForce Card
Windows Vista 64bit SP2

I just bought a fresh brand new copy of Windows XP 64bit with SP2 which wasnt too cheap, and a floppy drive to boot. So I thought I was ready...

Now ive read many of the threads relating to this big problem and have followed the steps. Im having the issue that a lot of people seem to have when I try and install my XP 64bit OS, everything is fine UNTIL i get to the "Starting Windows" prompt after all the other drivers have loaded, then BLAM Blue screen of death.

I tried locating the SATA 'autodetect' feature in the BIOS, and my BIOS doesnt offer that capability of turning it off or on, just autodetects the drive's hard drive space (500GB). So no good there.

So then I downloaded the SATA driver for my hard drive from the Dell Driver page (at least the closet to my exact model, model number for mine wasnt listed on Dell's site for SATA drivers). Then I uploaded the driver to my Floppy External Drive, ready to install in during the ... Read more

Hi All, About an hour and a half ago, I did a Google search for IE hangups, running slow, etc. I found one that sounded like what I was experiencing and lo and behold it was here. So, I read the post and followed the instructions, which were:
1. go to Start
2. Accessories
3. Run
4. MSConfig
5. I forget !
6+. Since I forgot 5, all I can say about the rest was that I went to two more menus and deleted all startups (i think), then reenabled my antivirus. I also cheated a little bit and re-enabled Zone Alarm and Evernote and Messenger.
Then, I went to another tab, I believe Services, and disabled all windows programs. Again I cheated and didn't check Intel, the program that controls the touchpad and perhaps one other.
Then I restarted.
I was DUMB and didn't read the rest of the post before I did all this so I have no clue what to do if things start going haywire except to restore.
IE DOES seem to be running better but I would still like to find the post and copy down the instructions and read the rest of it. I've spent the last hour and a half looking for it on this forum and on "all other software" to no avail. Am hoping the person who offered the solution will read this and respond.
Many thanks (and boy has this taught me a lesson about reading the ENTIRE thread).
PH
p.s. Since I restarted the computer, the history was wiped out on Google and no amount of re-entering what I thought I had entered before brought up the info.

My daughter's Dell Inspiron 1525, service tag J53SWG1. The laptop is running Windows Vista Ultimate with the most recent service pack. (Windows update does not show any available updates.)

The laptop has been giving Blue screen errors for the past 3 -4 weeks. The stop errors are always different. Most of the BSD occur either surfing the web or playing games on Facebook.

I updated the driver's via Dell Support & installed a new copy of McAfee Internet Security. I ran an antivirus scan an it came up clean. I ran Malware bytes scan & it also came back clean.

My daughter uses a cool pad under the laptop, plugged into the USB port, to ensure it stays cool. (I've use the laptop without the cool pad & the laptop did not get hot.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I open Device Manager and get a yellow triangle with an (!) on the following
Display adapters = Standard VGA Graphics Adapter
Other devices = Base System Device - Base System Device - Base System Device - Ethernet Controller - Network Controller - Video Controller
So I went to my other computer to go to dell website and put my tag number In an downloaded all the drivers to an external hard drive.
Putting the external hard drive In the laptop with problems thinking I could double click and Install the drivers. But get the message
Application download did not succeed, check your network connection, or contact your system administrator or network service provider.
The only discs I have for my laptop are Microsoft works 9, Dell MediaDirect 3.5 and Windows Vista home premium 32bit.
I called Dell thinking I still had warranty but got told It had ran out and got put to the warranty expired people who told me my problem would be fixed In 15 minuets but would cost £69.99. I really think £70 for 15 minuets Is a bit much so hope you guys might be able to help me out.

I have a hp pavilion laptop d4 that all of the sudden says that the copy of windows is not genuine. Does the licensed of windows expire after a while?

A:Copy of windows vista not genuine

No, it does not expire. It normally means an infection or a failed MS update.

For the first case, you need to run standard malware tests see here http://www.techspot.com/community/forums/virus-and-malware-removal.28/

But before you start that, just in case of a failed update, try just shutting windows down from the start button, and choose restart in safe mode. Mess about a bit in case Windows needs a bit of time to look around. Run 'chkdsk' in read-only mode just in case there has been a bit of corruption. If errors are reported, repeat as chkdsk /r. Then if all is clear, restart again into normal mode. This has been known to work, and is quick and simple. Good Luck.

Check below your post, this forum cleverly adds relevant historic post for you to look at.

Hi, I'm not sure if anybody has had this same issue, but here goes:

After dropping a bunch of money on a Dell Inspiron with Windows Vista, I encountered an issue with playing music off the hard drive. I transferred all of my music from my external hard-drive (downloaded from CD's, not the net) onto the hard disk and then started it up. Regardless of whether I'm using Windows Media Player 11, Media Direct, the Media Center, no matter what I use, when each song is almost over (usually 10-20 seconds remaining) you hear what sounds like a CD skipping. It lliterally sounds like there is a CD in there and that it's skipping. Now, this only goes on for about two seconds or so, but it does so on every single song.

Incidently, I do not have this issue with my wifes Inspiron, which runs Windows XP home - it plays the files like a champ, which was my reason for purchasing one myself.

Anyway, Dell tech support tried for a couple hours to fix it, and then informed me that they were gonna have to forward the issue to some other people, that it's probably something to do with the new OS. So, while I wait 1 to 2 weeks for their response, let me ask everyone the following questions:

1) Has anybody experienced this same issue and managed to get it fixed? If so, how? Even a complete reinstall failed to fix the problem for me, so if anybody has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate hearing them.

Hey all,

Windows Vista shutting, forcing an update on me and I had to turn off computer at that moment so I manually shut it down. Launched it again and Vista was unable to boot, so I put in installation CD and did a repair. Then Vista installed but it now lacked the drivers needed for network adapter.

I installed the Realtek RTL8168/8111 but still I cannot connect to internet with wireless. Under other devices the following have explamation points:
Mass Storage Controller
Network Contorller
SM Bus Controller
Video Controller

The computer is a vostro 1520 dell laptop. All hardware on it is the defaults that came with computer.

Thanks for response.

There should be a service tag located on the laptop's bottom. Surf over to Dell's support site (Dell - Drivers and Downloads) and input the service tag. You should be able to download the drivers you are missing.

Hi All! Thanks in advance for any help that is given! I have a DELL Inspirion 1525, Vista Basic, Intel Pentium, I keep it updated with MS and it has AVG installed.
I went to boot up yesterday and got the dreaded Blue Screen with the following message:
The registry cannot load the hive(file): \systemroot\system32\config\sam or it's log or a alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or was not writable.

When I went to reboot in the repair mode the following messages came up:

and this message when I tried a repair boot again:

Hi DaFish,

My name is Tapan. I am from Dell Social Media Team.

The issue that you are seems to be related to the registry problem with your system, I would suggest you to please try to load the system in safe mode and check if it loads in Safe mode. You can follow the steps for trying to boot the system in safe mode.

1. Restart the computer.
2. 2. Tap the < F8 > key on the keyboard at intervals of 2 to 3 seconds at the Dell logo until you see the Windows Advanced Options Menu on the screen.
3. 3. Select Safe Mode from the menu using the arrow keys on the keyboard and then press the <Enter> key.
4. 4. Select Administrator at the log in screen.
5. 5. A Warning dialog box with the message Windows is running in safe mode. Appears.

You can still try to run hardware tests on the system as well following the steps below :-

1. Please push and hold the power button for 10 seconds to confirm the system is completely powered off.
2. Then, press and hold the <Fn> key, and then press the power button to power the system on.
3. Now, release both buttons. The Pre-Boot System Assessment screen appears and the PSA diagnostic test begins.
4. Document any error codes displayed by PSA diagnostics. After the error tones, or completion of the PSA diagnostic test, the Dell 32-bit Diagnostic screen appears.
Let me know of the findings. Glad to be of assistance.

Thanks & Regards

Hello everyone!
So yesterday, my laptop simply decided to stop connecting to my wireless network. I'm at a loss as to why and what to do. All other devices in my house are getting a perfect signal from the network but my computer either can't find it, or only has 1 green bar and says it cannot connect. I've tried a system restore, I've tried to troubleshoot on my computer and can't figure it out. The weird thing is it is picking up other wireless signals fine (like my neighbors, ect) but just not my home one. Again, it was working one minute, then simply stopped working and hasn't been able to connect at all.
Help!

A few weeks I had some issues that were fixed with something as simple as performing a DNS Flush.

Prior to that Dell told me to back up everything on my laptop (Inspiron 1501) and restore to factory settings, which I did.

Since doing that, I get errors which cause my windows updates to fail. I'm guessing something must be missing now that I restored to factory settings. I called Dell, asked if I should try restoring to factory settings again, and they said that most likely wouldn't work. Okay fine.

Then, they told me that I'd have to pay them, (starting at $65) to reinstall my operating system. (I'm guessing that would be considered reimaging my machine?)

Anyway, if I have all of my Windows Operating CD's that came with my machine along with the Dell Start up CD, why on earth would I need to pay Dell to do it remotely over the phone? When I asked the "tech support" guy (who seemed more interested in trying to sell me their service), he danced around the question.

But in the end, he told me, that even with those start up disks (operating system and the other Dell disk) there is no way I'd be able to do it on my own.

Is there any truth to this? Why would they give me the disks in the first place? Truthfully, I'm techically challenged. Any hope for someone like me?

Thanks!

Hi,

OS: Windows 7 Professional 64bit. Used since Win7 came out with no genuinity issues until now.

A short while after the SP1 update I started getting popups claiming my Windows is not genuine. I know for a fact that my Windows is genuine.

Properties show my Windows is activated. I have activated both online and by phone yet the popup still keeps appearing. The MGA diagnostics show that there is a tampered file and apparently it is causing the validation to flag my system as not genuine:

I have tried to fix this for a while now. The file seems to be associated with MUI packages and Something called Vistalizator.

I have checked the registry and there are no MUI's. US-EN only. I do not have anything called Vistalizator.

I am rather frustrated with googling in microsoft pages as they all lead to the Vistalizator and MUI packs but I don't have them so the fix does not apply.

Hello everyone, I have a bit of weird problem. My step-brother's laptop keeps telling him his version of Vista is not genuine. And yes I'm telling the truth, it really is my step-brother with the problem, and not just me using him as a scapegoat to save my e-pride . But anyway I told him a thousand times to look for help online, but every time he just answers with something nonsensical like "No I shouldn't have to. Bill Gates should just make better hardware." And I'm just like there are so many things wrong with that statement I don't know where to start. So I decided to make the topic for him since him complaining about it nonstop won't fix it. I'll provide as much info as I can, but I'm not sure if it'll prove useful. It would be much better if he would just make a topic, so he could go into more detail but it's not like he listens to me.

A few days ago a sign came up telling me my Windows Vista ™ Build 6002 is not genuine. It happened shortly after installing Ad-aware. This has been uninstalled but has made no difference. Every time i log in a window appears telling me to activate now. I have tried using the number on the bottom of my laptop as well as a number found from within the system, but neither of these have been accepted.

I had a new hard drive put in a month or so ago and am wondering if this may be the reason for the problem.

Many thanks to anyone who can help me!  JH

The new hard drive could be the issue. I don't know much about this kinda stuff. There is also a possibility that you may have a Pirited copy of vista. It could also be something that ad-aware did.

I'm fairly sure this is a software problem so I'm posting here rather than at Dell's forums.

This morning, I was using my laptop on battery. After five minutes the battery meter went from full to 98%. Then a few minutes later--I happened to be looking at it when it happened--it shot down to 3%. 98% to 3% in one second.

To keep it from shutting down on me, I ran to get the power cord but didn't beat it. After plugging in and rebooting, the power meter shows it plugged in and charging, but it has not left 3% after 5 hours and multiple restarts. Battery meter shows the battery's status (about 3-4 months old) as "normal."

I have some knowledge of Windows Vista, but I'm not even sure where to start on this problem. Any suggestions?

I had Vista and Win 7 Ultimate dual booting each on a separate partition of the same hard drive. Vista was installed first.

I used EasyBCD to (a) remove Vista from the boot menu and (b) set Windows to boot directly into Win 7.
This worked.

I then used GParted to remove the Vista partition and add the space to Win 7.

I then used my Win 7 Ultimate disk to do a startup repair because Bootmgr was 'missing' since it was on the Vista partition. This also appeared to work because the computer boots into my login screen and shows the local domain that I log into.

However, after logging in, the 'Preparing your desktop' screen appears for a long time, and then a blue-blank desktop appears with the 'Win 7 Build 7601 This copy of windows is not genuine' message in the lower right.

This copy of Win 7 Ultimate is from my subscription to the Microsoft Action Pack.

Is there a way to fix this without having to re-install Windows 7?

Thanks,

A:How do I activate windows on a Dell laptop which came with pre installed genuine windows 8.

It is possible  you have a pirated copy of Windows. Computers with a factory installed legal copy of Windows do not need to be activated. The activation code for Windows 8 is located in the system BIOS and is read automatically. You can check the code by using one of the utilities that will extract it from the BIOS. If there is a code, contact Microsoft and ask them if the code is valid.

I have pasted text in below, and would welcome more expert advice as to whther I have missed something, and if not, what should I do next?

There was a 5 page thread on trying to downgrade from Ultimate to Win 7 Pro but I thought I should start a new thread. I have a thead on a different forum but was hoping someone here might know the answer.

Users computer says Windows is not genuine, was 7 pro, in Sept 2013 we upgraded to Ultimate to use Bitlocker. System bought from Dell, used Anytime Upgrade to Ultimate. I spent ages on phone with Microsoft today, they have completely agreed both copies are valid, and the computer is saying they're not, in error, they will not admit that it's a Windows Update that caused it likely.

They took over remotely, and 30 minutes later gave up, none of the methods worked. She then advised me to BUY a copy of 8.1 and do a clean install. I don't want 8.1, if we have to reinstall I'd rather do Win 7 Pro again(same valid code) and then up to Ultimate again(same valid code), or go to Win 10 when it comes out. Of course you can't upgrade a "non genuine" copy of Windows 7 to win 10, even if it is in fact genuine.

We don't want to have to reinstall. MS also told me I need to downgrade to Win 7 Pro, put in the code, then upgrade to Ultimate. To do that they said I have to do a clean install. I've seen all the links to Windows Downgrader but we aren't exactly thrilled to be advised to use a 3rd party app. I have not tried the registry suggestions yet, I'm not particularly comfortable dealing with the registry. Two questions.

If MS had been willing to just give me a new U... Read more

Recently a note has appeared on bottom right of screen on my laptop which says-This copy of windows is not genuine.
I know for a fact it is genuine as i only purchased it 0n the 3rd December 2010.
I have not had any problems with it until the note appeared on my laptop last week.
Can someone tell me how i can correct this please.
Many thanks

A:My Genuine activation issue although I have a genuine license

Interesting.
The error message
Notification Reason: 0xC004F063.
...is a pretty specific one, and almost always means that the machine has been reinstalled using media other than the manufacturer's Recovery media, while still using the manufacturer's OEM_SLP Key instead of the COA Key.

For what version and edition of Windows is the machine licensed - according to the COA sticker on the case (or inside the battery compartment)

Hello and thanks in advance to whoever can help me.

A couple of days ago I was downloading some video files and since I wasn't paying attention I clicked an .exe instead of a video file. I know this makes me the idiot, but I have beaten myself up over it for a while and cannot fix this myself so I am now humbly coming forward with my idiocy to get my Toshiba Qosmio back up and health. So here's the deal:

I got the popup that I wasn't running a genuine copy of Windows 7 64 bit Pro (which I am...came from the factory). Tried to resolve it online and the only answer I got was to buy another copy of Windows, which I don't really want to do. Then I tried to run Windows Update and I get random error codes as to why I can't. I tried a system restore and got a message that there is an error on my hard drive, to run chkdsk. Tried that, nothing. Even when Windows rebooted it wouldn't let me. So then I boot towards the safe mode menu and see an option for Windows Repair, choose that and click on system restore. I pick a restore point a week or so ago and try to restore. Negative. Got a message that not only could it not restore but now that restore point was damaged (hooray). Tried rebooting to that screen and all I get is black: pointer works with touch pad but not mouse. Tried booting into safe mode and I couldn't get explorer.exe to run and had no icons. Then rebooted to Last Known Good Configuration which is where I am now.

I recently downloaded SP1 to my Windows 7 machine and shortly thereafter a message appeared on the lower right hand corner indicating that "Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of windows is not genuine". I bought this machine used and so I verified the key with Microsoft and it is a genuine OEM key but try as I may there is nowhere to enter a product key. I go to start-computer-right click- and at the bottom under Windows Activation it states Status: Not Available - Product ID: Not Available and NO place to enter a product key. Also all of the DOS commands that I can find on the Net do not seem to work either. When I contact Microsoft support they are no help at all and tell me I need to do a CLEAN install with the disk that came with my machine. The only problem is that no disk came with this machine. I have also been told by "Tech support" since I have an OEM key I just cannot use ANY install win 7 disk. I have a TON of Apps. loaded on this machine and it TICKS me off that I have a VALID OEM key and seemingly no way to enter or fix which I suspect is a Microsoft bug to begin with as they have overshot to prevent piracy. Someone Please help!

A:Win 7 Prof not genuine and cannot enter genuine OEM product key

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine, but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

running a Windows Vista network. no problems with 3 wirless computers running Windows XP. and no problems printing remotely using the desktop running Vista. new Dell laptop is running Vista and trying to add a printer, it doesn't see any of the printers. At first it didn't show the wired desktop on the laptop under the network. On the wired desktop under network, It showed the laptop as a music sign and not a computer icon. We deleted the workgroup name and retyped it and changed it to a private computer. have disabled both firewalls. The laptop is running Trend Internet Securioty. It then found the wired desktop on the laptop. But it still doesn't see any of the printers that are connected to the wired desktop.Tried to find the printers by typing in \\192.168.100 under the run command. It said it couldn't recognize the wired DNS address 192.168.100. That is the ipconfig address from cmd and then ipconfig from the wired Dell laptop.

What do we need to do to have the laptop see the printers?

We got a new Dell machine with the Vista preinstalled. Employee wanted Ubuntu (how do ya blame him?) so he resized partitions and installed Ubuntu, but now Vista won't boot.

What can we do to get Vista to be happy again?

This howto:
http://www.pro-networks.org/forum/about78184.html#dualboot
says:
"DO NOT resize the Vista partition during the installation of the Linux distribution! Due to the change in NTFS versions, no Linux partitioning program, nor standard Windows partitioning programs, can properly alter the partition that Vista is installed to."
But we're too late for that...

I bought a new hard drive that had Windows 7 Home Premium already installed. It was pulled from a brand new HP computer that didn't sell. I have the installation product key but after about a month I started getting a message that it doesn't pass the Microsoft Genuine Advantage test. Is there any other solution other paying for a new o/s? I would greatly appreciate some help.
