Web Page Desktop Shortcuts

Q: Web Page Desktop Shortcuts

On my XP machine, the shortcuts I made to websites *like this one* had an icon that resembled something of the site. In 7 they have that icon, but it is VERY small and sorrounded by a white web page look. All of my web shortcuts have this same look minus w/e is in the middle and as a result I can not tell the difference between the links. Any way to get the old XP logos back?

The title says it all. When I open a URL shortcut from the desktop, IE opens it to a blank page. All links opened from within IE and other programs, however, open fine.

I have spent two days searching for a solution everywhere I can locate and tried all of the solutions I found (short of a reinstall of WIN7) and nothing has worked. I have uninstalled IE 10 back to IE8 and reinstalled it twice, but each reinstall of IE8, 9, and 10 have not gotten rid of the problem. I must stay with WIN7 and IE10 for now for various reasons so I need to find a solution.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

I often right click in IE (I'm actually using Avant, a kind of IE mask I guess) and select Create Shortcut. It puts a shortcut and my desktop to that page. This mysteriously stopped working. The icon appears on my desktop with the page title and all, but when I double click it, it just opens up my browser and loads about:blank. In the shortcut file's properties, it just says:

Type: Internet Shortcut
Description: (the title of the page)

and then gives me the file's size, location, etc., but it doesn't list the URL anywhere. It's just getting on my nerves having to copy a page's URL to a text file on my desktop if I want to remind myself of something.

A:Simple but annoying. Web page shortcuts just open a blank IE page.

Sounds like you have been hijacked by about:blank. Go to this website that will help you remove it.

Here's how I did it using Windows Movie Maker 6.0 as an example:

1. Open your "all apps" view
2. Right click the app you want to appear on your desktop
3. Select "open file location"

4. Once opened, right-click the highlighted exe file and select "create shortcut"

5. Select OK for desktop option

That should do it! Good luck.

Hi,
I have an easy question. Does it hurt to have a lot of desktop shortcut icons? Mine seem to be growing (currently 32) but all are what I use frequently like games. I have tried to look this up first (desktop icons) but did not answer my question. Is it better to have them listed in the 'Start' menu?
Looking them up in Programs is difficult for me as I have a defunct memory and can't remember who the game is made by as listed. Any suggestions please?

Thank you very much for your help.

I have an issue with internet explorer on a 64-bit system. basically there are certain websites requiring popups that will only work on 64-bit IE9, but if i drag a link to these sites onto the desktop so the user can click on them directly they default to 32-bit IE9 and not 64-bit.

i have tried using the properties tab and open with and pointing that at the 64-bit executable, but even though it says its doing that, its still defaulting to opening the site in 32-bit

its very frustrating!

any advice much appreciated

I just recently installed google chrome. After deciding that I did not like it I uninstalled it. Since I have removed it I can no longer create desktop shortcuts. I can get the shortcuts to display on my desktop but it will not allow my to access them. In addition I can not access any links that are sent to my through emails. Each time I try I keep on getting an error message that says application not found. I reinstalled google chrome and that fixed the problem, but I really just don't like the page displays that it has and removed it again causing me to have this same problem. I'm currently using windows vista. Any help would be greetly appreciated.

This is what I'd try ...

Open a Command prompt. The default directory (folder) is probably your home directory so type

cd Desktop
dir

That should change directory (folder) to your desktop and then list the contents. Delete whatever you are trying to get rid of with

del "name"

The quotes are in case there are spaces in the name. If that doesn't get rid of the critter and the name is greater than 8 characters try the del command again but for name use just the 1st 6 characters followed by ~1 (or ~2 if it is the 2nd one with the same 6 char start). Example ...

Hello sunespeg, I am coming in late here, as you have already been fixing items. HijackThis is an advanced tool, and therefore requires advanced knowledge about Windows and operating systems in general. If you delete items that it shows, without knowing what they are, it can lead to other problems such as your Internet no longer working or problems with running Windows itself. If you are do not have advanced knowledge about computers you should NOT fix entries using HijackThisYou have a suspicious file we need to check. Go to Jotti Online File Scanner copy and paste C:\WINDOWS\system32\cdmodem7.exe to the upload and scan it. Let me know the results. Copy and paste the output to this thread. It should look something like this sample: File: GoogleToolbarInstaller.exe Status: MIGHT BE INFECTED/MALWARE (Sandbox emulation took a long time and/or runtime packers were found, this is suspicious. I have made a habit of creating such shortcuts to the various websites that I find particularly helpful & user friendly.

Today I noticed for the first time that most of these shortcuts refused to launch with the traditional double click unless I already had my browser (chrome) open.
I would much prefer to open directly by launching from a shortcut.

Is this possible, & what might have changed if this is (as I think it is) different behaviour?

Thanks & small donation sent.

I saved a few downloads to my desktop and they weren't there ... at least not on the desktop right in front of me. But if I go into my desktop via start-myname-desktop I see the items ... which is kind of telling me that while I am signed in as me - I am not seeing my own desktop. Here is a strange one. On my XP Pro box I have Active Desktop enabled. If I have a shortcut on the desktop then I can see a Jpg as my background. However, if I delete all the shortcuts and have no desktop icons, my background goes blank. I can use a bmp file and no shortcuts/icons just fine. I just can't use a jpg background, which active desktop should allow.

I normally have a desktop with no icons or shortcuts on it. Now I find I can't do it and have a jpg background. Is this normal? Can anybody tell me why this is happening?

A few months ago I had a lot of working shortcuts on my desktop, which were to programs such as "MSN Messenger" or "Paint" or to folders such as "My Pictures". I then reinstalled windows, rendering these shortcuts invalid. I ignored them for a while, simply reinstalling programs and placing new shortcuts on the desktop (whyich work as normal). However, I now wish to delete them, but if I try to do so, or to rename them, move them, or in any other way change them, I get the "Cannot (delete) (paint): Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use" error message. I have searched this site and the rest of the internet, and have tried several solutions, none of which have worked.

I have full administrator rights on this computer.

I have tried deleting the shortcuts from the command prompt, but access is still denied.

I have tried starting windows in safe mode (and running the command prompt in safe mode) from the default windows administrator account, but access is still denied.

I have tried using free programs similar to ccleaner, but the invalid shortcut finder/deleter/start menu cleaner/similar functon of these programs simply does not recognise these as broken links, and so does not give me the option to fix or delete them.

The shortcuts are on my desktop, and are found in the folder:

In the course of making a friend's XP system easier for her to use, I tried to create shortcuts to programs and files present on her system. My goal is to get shortcuts displayed on her desktop, to make access as easy as possible. Her desktop was blank (without shortcuts), except for the background image when I started, and remains so. I tried doing this in several ways. First, via Start, where I clicked and dragged 'Notepad' from there to the desktop. When I stopped clicking and dragging, it was nowhere on the desktop. Then I tried via Windows Explorer, where I found some files of interest to her, right-clicked on each, and selected 'Create Shortcut' from the list. As before, that appeared to work, but the icon immediately vanished from the desktop as before. (I am not at her system right now, but I believe that each shortcut that I created may have been added to her 'Start' list.)

Is there some 'master' switch that permits depositing shortcuts on the desktop for XP?

Thanks

Using Windows 7 Pro (32 bit)

Everything going on well then all pf a sudden, I lose all my short-cuts on my desktop.

I know they are still there as I can see them in the Desktop folder in my branch of Users (I am the only user!)

If I try to put another short-cut on everything goes ahead quite normally until I complete - and then the screen is still blank of short-cuts, but the new short-cut is in my Desktop folder as it should be

It's just as though they are hidden.

I have done nothing to cause it.

Has anyone any ideas?

Hello -First, I posted this on Kioskea.net, as they seemed to offer some listed ideas that I could not find here, but it has been left unanswered. All of my earlier computers were able to leave a desktop shortcut for BleepingComputer and other forums (Examples : MBAM and Geeks2Go) but now I am unable to do similar things here (8.1 Classic Shell). I did  get a MBAM forum link as soon as I understood the computer, but I am unable to a ) Reproduce it - and b ) Create any new ones.

I just started using Windows 8, so I don't know where everything is. However, I would like to use the Desktop for short cuts to documents I use frequently. I can put them there all right, but when I try to use them again, I get message something like: "the document to which this shortcut points has been moved or deleted", and then asks me if I should delete the shortcut, which I do since obviously it no longer works. Is there a way I can put documents on the desktop, and retrieve them whenever?

I work for a company and we've been having an ongoing issue with the way new browser Windows are popping up. When a user clicks on a shortcut they have on their desktop, it pops up in a window behind the active window. It hasn't been a real major issue, just more of a nuissance than anything else.

Myself and a few other people have been doing some searching and can't find anything on the subject. I tried doing a search on these forums, but was getting an error message. I've tried playing with the different settings within IE6 but haven't been able to fix anything. Is there some magic setting that we're all missing? The strange thing is that it works fine for some people and others it doesn't.

All of the users that are having this issue are using IE6 on Windows XP Pros SP 3.

A:Problem with IE desktop shortcuts

I forgot to mention in my original posting that I did try resetting IE 6, but it didn't change anything. I included a couple screen shots to help illustrate what is happening.

What I did in the "New browser behind" jpg was I clicked the IE icon on the desktop to open IE. Then I clicked on the google shortcut. The screenshot shows how the windows are popping up. In the "normal layout" jpg I clicked on the IE icon on the desktop to open both windows, and this time the second window opened in front.

Hopefully this info helps if it seemed confusing before.

Everytime I go to click on a desktop shortcut that was created through Firefox or IE7 I get this line across the upper part of my screen and it freezes. Doesn't happen when the shortcut is for a folder in my computer (windows Media Player, Documents etc). Any suggestions. Thanks.

It seems that all my desktop shortcuts have turned into white squares. It happened after the installation of last weeks security update.(at least I assume it was caused by the update.....it could just be a coincidence)
Anyway.....I've been beating my head against the wall for three days trying to figure how to correct the problem myself and I cannot.
I would be incredibly grateful for assistance.

Uhh, i've checked with the hijackteam about this problem and the guy there redirected me here. he suspects that its not a malware related problem.

When i double click on a shortcut on my desktop (e.g. itunes) nothing comes up. however, when i right click then click run, the program runs normally. this problem also occurs in the start menu. i have to right click and press open instead of double clicking the icon directly. can anybody advise???

also, when i add the quick launch bar to my windows bar, it will disappear everytime i reboot. i find this quite irritating.

can anybody help with this problem? i suspect its because i accidentally deleted some scripts while deleting flyakiteosx from my computer. thankyou! any help would be greatly appreciated :D

Hi all,

Every so often my desktop refreshes all of the shortcuts I have on it, I do have quite a few on there, but I never had this problem with earlier versions of Windows. There doesn't appear to be a time limit to when it does it.

If anyone could let me know why it does it ? Or how to stop it doing it I would really appreciate it.

I wouldn't mind it so much, but every time it refreshes I have to wait before I can do anything.

Many thanks in advance for your help,

A:how can I display 300 desktop shortcuts?

I don't think you can display that many directly on the Desktop, but by creating a QuickAccess toolbar you can store quite a few shortcuts in there, and you can also create an additional Taskbar on the Desktop which could house quite a few more of those shortcuts.

I was recently working on a client's computer and have a problem that I haven't seen or dealt with before. I did some searches but can't seem to find any similar issues so maybe someone here has encountered it. According to the customer she was moving some pictures to be copied to a CD. She got a pop up asking if she'd like to install something to her desktop, (she can't remember what the "something" was). She clicked no but it apparently installed anyway and she suddenly had 1900 shortcuts on her desktop. That isn't a typo, 1900, which kinda made me chuckle. She deleted all the icons and restarted her machine but when she restarted some of them were back. This is where I get confused because it isn't a shortcut for a website, or some sort of adware, the icons that come back are just shortcuts to the original pictures she was working with. I have ran a full virus and spyware scans but found nothing. Any ideas?

First, I'd get a note of what that "something" was :whistling: She might have hit some accidental setting, though I'm not familiar with any setting that does that!

I would suggest closing down all running applications, and then opening your browser and downloading Process Monitor. Once downloaded to a temporary folder (like C:\TEMP or C:\Users\<username>\Downloads), double-click and launch the procmon.exe to start Process Monitor - note that it will begin logging immediately. Simply double-click any desktop icon, and when it fails, go back to the Process Monitor window and click File > Save. Note the location of the file, and click the "OK" button to save the LogFile.pml file. Compress (with 7zip, winrar, winzip, whichever app you use) and upload the file to a file hosting site for one of us to download and review to see if we can make any determination as to why this might be happening.

I am new to Windows XP Pro. (Sorry, all you Vista users.) I copied all my desktop shortcuts from a Windows 2000 computer to my new desktop. The shortcuts point to files located on my server and all the drives are mapped. So why are my keyboard shortcuts (ctrl+alt+key) not opening the files any more? In 2000, I was used to being able to run any desktop shortcut by pressing the ctrl+alt combination. Now when I do that, nothing happens. If I go to the desktop and double click the shortcuts, they open immediately. How can I resolve this problem?

A:Desktop Shortcuts Not Working

While I'm not sure about this, you may have to remap all of your shortcuts to make this possible. Try remaking one as an experiment - if it works, then that's the solution for the rest.EDIT: A bit more research seems to indicate that Ctrl - Alt - key isn't a valid Windows shortcut combination. So, I suspect that this was an add-on program on your Windows 2000 PC that isn't installed on your XP PC.

Hello experts: I'm new to this forum and look forward to learning from you all. I would like to refer to a thread started by lowellc in Jan,'08 titled: "desktop shortcuts to websites are broken". I am faced with the same problem and I have noticed some similarities in our experiences and some differences; I'm pretty sure I can trace my problem back to some ill-advised changes to my internet browsing experience by doing the following (and I'll not bore you with the reasons for trying to fix something that wasn't broken): I am running XP Pro SP1.
1- downloaded and installed Firefox. seemed to swork OK but also seemed to slow reaction time down during web time.
2- un-installed Firefox, downloaded IE7 and tried to install. message announced that could not install due my PC running SP1.
3- assumed that I was back to running IE6 as I could successfully connect to and use the web and email, etc.
4- then later noticed that my desktop shortcuts no longer work and window pops up and tells me that there is no file associated with the shortcut and so on.
Have since tried several fixes posted from various forums and none work. My gut tells me that this is a problem created by Firefox. It seems to be a common link in all of the threads that I have read, 'tho none of them were using IE6. Since I tried to install IE7, I'm wondering if some fragments of IE7 and Firefox are screwing up my PC and if I could somehow find a way to get all traces of IE7 and Firefox out of my PC and ... I have recently found that my desktop shortcuts no longer work. When I double click I get a list (a very short list) of programs which might be used to open a particular software. It then looks to know if I want to save this program. It can then run it perfectly. One annoying aspect is that I am not able to get accessories within Programs. I use Paint quite a bit and it is now no longer available to me.

A:Non working Desktop Shortcuts

Your links are broken - for whatever reason (maybe the files were moved to another location or partition). You have to recreate the shortcuts which should be fairly easy. Those shortcuts are useless. All you have left are the pictures.
Paint you find in %windir%\system32\mspaint.exe

A:Vanishing desktop shortcuts

Hiya karlosio.

It`s certainly not something that should be happening so there`s not a recognised system fix that I know of. After clearing out your temp files, cookies and of course the recycle bin, I`d recommend updating and running full scans of your anti- virus, malware and spyware and see if that comes up with something.

You could also put the XP CD in the drive and type sfc /scannow in the run command to confirm the system files.

If nothing nasty shows up or the problem persists after that, run Hijack This and post a log on here and I`m sure one of the clever guys on here will pick it up.

I work on win7 after several gooood years on XP and now:
I have on my desktop several shortcuts, which open the most frequently used programs. They opened usually with a double left-click, as always, but some time ago they ceased to function in the usual way (double click) and now in order to open a program I must either :
- right-click and then click on the "open" in the menu
- or drag the shortcut to the taskbar and open it with a left click.
I tried to change the setting in "folder options" to single click. And the shortcuts now open, but then I find that the various folders do not open neither with one nor with a double click and only with "enter"
What can be done
Please advise

I have a business associate running XP SP2 on a Dell Dimension. He said he was just moving some files around and suddenly his desktop is full of shortcuts, literally hundreds of copies of documents. For example the shortcut’s title may be “Copy (340) of document.doc”. He said he cannot delete any of them, they just keep coming back. I suspect some type of spyware infection (he is running only Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition, no anti-spyware programs that I’m aware of). I was wondering if these symptoms are indicative of any specific infection?

Can someone tell me how to get things working properly.

Second problem is that my web editor won't call up IE to view changes.

Perhaps this already exists in some powertoy (if so let me know so I can get it), but I want to group similar/related desktop shortcuts into catagories (example) all dvd related apps into one group on the desktop that would STAY IN PROXIMITY TO EACH OTHER IN A GROUP. I do not want to simply create a new folder for the desktop as you can not see the individual programs without double clicking on the folder first. What I want is essentially program groups like in windows 3.1 but where you could see the actual icons for the individual apps.
If anyone knows, please let me know, if anywone wants to write it, let me know.

Ok, that's not funny...

I played some UT3, made some screenshots w/ Fraps to the desktop, downloaded a vid to the desktop, and when i was finished, there where some empty spots in my icon rows on the desktop. I thought that something shuffled the icons around, but then discovered that about 4-6 shortcuts where missing. There where simply gone, i did a search for them.

After some investigation (including examining my desktop backup) i found that all the missing shortcuts have a broken link (the destination doesn't exist at the moment).

So, what is this strange behavior? Shortcuts that no longer work are deleted automatically without warning the user??? Anyone had this problem too?

I'm a little worried...
jj

PS: The shortcuts where created in WinXP prior installing Win7. Could this be the problem and why?

A:Some desktop shortcuts disappeared!

I too have this problem. For instance, I have a phone with an SD card. Link is not good when I don't have the phone docked. Similar with my thumb drive. I really hate that it keeps deleting icons.

One that really bothers me is that I have a set of icons to connect to other computers on my local network. It includes one to "this" computer. That one went away overnight last night. Strange!

Does anyone know of a fix for this?

I can open documents, and they work. But I cant open shortcuts for programs on the desktop without the "Open With" box appearing, or a "Set Associations" box appearing.

As far as the "Open With" box goes, I can select the program from the list and it works fine. It's just inconvenient. When the "Set Associations" box appears, I'm not so lucky. The control panel displays a message telling me that the file is corrupt.

Is there anything I can do to fix this without taking the laptop to see a specialist?

And if there is, can you explain it in idiots terms, because I'm not incredibly computer literate

Thank you in advance.

A:Problems with desktop shortcuts

Try this fix: LNK

Unzip the fix and extract the .REG file to the Desktop. Right-click the .REG file and choose Merge. Note that you need to be an Administrator to apply this fix.

Reboot the computer.

If the fix only opens as a text file, right-click it and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

Hey everyone,

I have read some other a while back, but it seems my problem is either unique or I haven't digged enough.

I am using Vista x64 and after every 2nd or so reboot, my desktop items are rearranged. I have them spread out by groups in each corner of the desktop. They are not "reset", like they are not all lined up to the left if they mess up. They just rearrange differently, the "groupings" in each corner remain, but shortcuts are switched around, always the same rearrangement if it happens. It's very strange.

Yes, I know there is a tool which makes it a two-click-issue to get the original layout back, but I still think there has to be a solution to this. Why does Vista always rearrange my layout and always in the same way, not resetting but really just switching around folders and links?

Anyone experienced this and has a solution or at least an explaination why this is happening?

Thanks in advance,
JD

Using 8. with the old style desktop screen. All the icons were working and now none will load. Appears the links between the shortcut and the destination aren't there anymore. If I use Internet Explorer and go too Google I can access the web sites. Tried making new desktop shortcuts but no go. Really could use some help, I'm dying here. There seems to be a simple solution but it beats me.

Hello deckboy, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Are you getting any error messages when you try to open the shortcuts?

For now, you might see if downloading and merging the .reg file for the listed .lnk (LNK) and .exe options in the tutorial below may help. They will restore their default associations and registry entries.

Hi there

Have you tried recreating all your shortcuts? If you have and that didn't work, do an online scan at the link below because you may be infected by a virus, trojan or worm.

hello, i don't normally need help with simple things like this but this has got me. In previous versions of Windows, i'd delete a shortcut off the desktop and it'd inform me that i was only deleting the shortcut and not the actual program. When i try on Windows 7 though, it informs me, i'll need admin rights to delete this file, and then gives me the directory /program file/ect. This seems to me that it's going to delete the actual file instead of the shortcut. Am i understanding correctly, and if so, how do i just remove the shortcut?

A:how to delete shortcuts from desktop

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

I've just double-checked my desktop as the scenario you describe seems a bit strange. If you delete a shortcut you are not removing the program or application, but just the shortcut to it, so I think you're absolutely right to query this behaviour.

I'd be inclined to run a full anti-virus check in Safe Mode to see if anything shows up. Malwarebytes is always a good choice for this.

Hi,

I've never ran into this before. I just installed a fresh version of XP Pro on my new desktop machine.

What I do is organize shortcuts to certain project folders on my desktop so I can quickly throw photos, documents, track files into my music projects etc.

Here is what I am running into now. Let's just say for example that I have Photoshop running and I want to open a file. Normally I could go to my Photo shortcut that links me to my main photo library on a separate drive and be fine. No, not now, windows tries to open the freakin' .lnk file, the shortcut itself as a file. It's super annoying.

I checked on my laptop to see if I was just going crazy. I created a shortcut to a folder -> photoshop -> open file -> navigated through folder as it should work and it was fine.

What is the problem? Thanks.

Hi folks, been trying to get help for a problem that started a few hours ago aqnd been referred here having tried a few options.
Had been in Google Chrome (IE9 ALSO OPEN) when I went to close it would not, so used Ctrl/Alt/Delete. For some reason it closed not only Chrome, but IE as well. From desltop I went into my Google shortcut (used IE), but would not open. Tried Windows Live Hotmail, that to would not open. Tried a few more and same result, though a couple, CCleaner and itunes did. Tried to get into IE through start menu...no joy. If I waited long enough I would get the following message come up;

There was a problem sending the command to the programme

Decided to reboot laptop, but would not close down. Message came up;

Question

Are you sure you want to cancel update?

Yes No

By clicking yes, windows closed.

Only way to get into the programmes is through Safe Mode with Networking, where everything works fine.
Have tried a few suggestions....making sure IE was default browser, uninstalling Chrome, having Windows check for shortcut errors...but still same problems.
In the course of trying to uninstall Chrome, when I went into Control Panel (Windows Normal Mode) there was NOTHING there! In Safe Mode everything there.
In Normal Mode my alternative uninstall programme could not fully uninstall Chrome...but in Safe Mode, I was able to uninstall through Control Panel!
That is where I am at...no further forward.
Any suggestions?

Several times a day the shortcuts fail to light up and right clicking on the desktop does nothing, i.e. I do not get the white "view, sortby, Screen resolution..di da... panel up.

Clicking Start>All programs gets me access to them but nothing short of a re-start gets the shortcuts etc, back, but back they always come!

The machine is an HP desktop a few months old bought with W7 Home Premium installed. They did not supply a W7 disc but there is a Recovery partiton.

In most other respects I am very happy with W7 coming from XP.

I've never run into this problem before... I created desktop shortcuts to some URLs like I've done on other computers, but when I try to open the link I get the following error: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel."

So OK, I go to the FOlder Options control panel and I've been modifying the URL file type associations to have it open by Internet Explorer... I've tried several different methods, i even tried restoring the defaults, but I still get this same error message!! HELP! What could this be? I've never come across this problem before! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

After a few hours work I gradually lose several links to programs on my desktop.
Sometimes they're back on next startup, but often not...
Is this normal & can something be done to avoid it?
Using W7 Ultimate.

A:Losing desktop shortcuts

Are the icons disappearing completely? If not, are they just losing their associations (links)?

Last week I clicked on a desktop shortcut to a web site, a Word document came up with what looks like is computer code.
I removed my MS Office 2000 which also removed Word and started using WordPad. I clicked on a shotcut and a WordPad document came up with what looks like is computer code!
I clicked on most of my other shortcuts and selected Properties:
Under type of file I get "DOC File (.doc)"
Under Open With I get "WordPad"
I don"t think I have done anything to create this problem but I am just dumb enough to contribute to the situation.

UPDATE 3/26/12:
I received a notification email stating there was a post to my discussion, I clicked the link and WordPad came up, I copied the link and pasted it in IE Address bar and immediately came to this site.
I then proceded to double click all my desktop icons and each one that contained a link brought up WordPad.
I then opened my deleted emails, which only go back to 3/19/12, and each one that contained a link brought up WordPad.
How do I stop the links from opening WordPad?
Another UPDATE:
I created a shortcut for this web page, whenI double click it I get the WordPad program. However, if I create a Favorite and I click on it I get directly to this webpage!
SOLUTION:
Go to control panel and find set default programs, then find your browser and select it. Then click choose defaults for this program and select all availible.

A:Desktop shortcuts have been infected.

It sounds like you tried to open a document that MS Word 2000 could not display properly or the file was not really a Word document.. Uninstalling MS Office 2000 will cause the operating system to associate WordPad with the file extension of ".doc"... so that part is normal.

Hello all!

Newbie here :P

My kid pressed something on keyboard and names of all shortcuts on my desktop now appearing on right side as on attached file.

I didn't understand how can I revert it back Googled it a lot, but didn't find any solution. Maybe can you help me?

UPDATE: I found this thread text aligned right to icons!? and it's exactly my case, but! there is no direct solution as well. Seems there is some hot key, but nobody knows it?

UPDATE 2: I solved the issue. It was caused by Fences software. I turned it off, refresh icons, and when they became normal, turned Fences on.
