Dell Inspiron BIOS Update

Q: Dell Inspiron BIOS Update

So after installing Windows 10 I decided to update my drivers and one of them was the "BIOS Update" after a while the update stopped at "sending the update image to FW for verification" and it's stuck on 3%. I'm not a computer wizard so your help is appreciated. Also if you're wondering , I'm using the Dell Inspiron 3847.

A: Dell Inspiron BIOS Update

Bios updates require special installation and must be done alone. It cannot be done with other drivers. Bios updates should be done before updating to win 10 not after. Use caution updating bios since it can brick your computer.
You should not be updating the drivers yourself. Go to Dell Drivers and downloads and let the scanner tell you what windows 10 drivers you need--
Completely Shutdown the computer to get out of the hangup. Wait a minute and then turn it back on.

Solution fo recovery bios Dell N51101. Download the latest firmware from the Dell support2. Save the exe and create a shortcut with the following parameter: " /writehdrfile"3. Start the created shortcut and it will create a n5110a11.hdr file rename the file to N5110.hdr4. Create a shortcut exe file with the following parameter: " /writeromfile"5. Start the created shortcut and it will create a n5110a11.rom file rename the file to DQ15A11.rom6. Copy both file "N5110.hdr" and "DQ15A11.rom" to a FAT formatted pendrive's root folder7. Hello Tech Guys,
Our office bought several computers over the past few days and I've been given the responsibility of setting them up. I AM NOT A COMUTER TECHNICIAN!

Everything was going fine until I tried to update the BIOS on one of the machines.

I had updated the BIOs on other machines with no problems - this time the BIOS update has frozen at 13%.

Please let me know what I can do to safely power down the computer and reboot/retry updating the BIOS.

Any help would be much appreciated.

A:Dell Inspiron 15R 5521 BIOS update error.

No -- 5G is more than enough free space for a BIOS flash.  Is the system failing to recognize the AC adapter (F2 at powerup to check)?
If it is, the BIOS won't flash - this is a hardware problem a BIOS update won't fix -- either the adapter, the DC jack or the mainboard is bad.

Hi Dell fans,  just hoping for a bit of direction with this issue:
I have an inspiron 7535 laptop that has started powering off after about 30 minutes of use.  no warning, no graceful shutdown, just straight to power-off.  I've cleaned and serviced it, the normal dell heatsink paste was dry as a nuns hip flask, so that's been renewed and and it's cooling just fine, but i dont think that is the problem.  Mainly because you can turn it straight back on and continue working for another period of time without any need for a cool-down.

My gut instinct is saying BIOS issues.  It's currently at versions A05 31/Oct/2013 and the latest from the support is A13 Release date 15 Jun 2015 (Last Updated 02 Aug 2015) however i cannot get this to install.
If I install within windows (10 x64)  it runs the extractor and flashed up a command window too fast to read the error. and I cannot find any logs it might create.  the command line options dont do anything.  every version does the same thing back to A06.  I seem to see something about intel in the message but cannot really read it in full.
i've also tried booting off a freedos disk and trying all versions too.  this extracts okay and gives error 8743: unknown or unsupported platform, cannot locate hardware platform identification this program cannot be run on the current plaform BIOS version too old please use the latest BIOS to flash.
Any ideas? either on the random pow... Read more

So as it says in the title i have a 4 years old Inspiron 7720, and for the larger portion of that period of time it worked like a charm.
However lately it started doing some quirky things.
About two weeks ago my GPU (GeForce GT 650M) just disappeared from my Device Manager. I tried updating my GPU drivers, updating Windows (10) but it didn't seem to change anything. So i did some digging and found this:
Apparently I'm not the only one who encounterd this problem and there is a solution.HOWEVER, whenever I try to flash my BIOS an error pops up which reads: "ERROR 105 - Command line error! Status = 105."
I searched and found more users that experienced this problem, but the only solution I managed to find was reinstalling the OS, which is quite a drastic measure.
Is there any other way to fix this error?Thank you

A:Dell Inspiron 7720 GPU not showing AND BIOS update Error 105

It appears your BIOS may need to be updated.  What is the current version you're using? You should update them in order without skipping to the highest first.  Here's some information that may be helpful.

I recently experienced a permanent battery failure on my Dell Inspiron 5548 laptop, and it can now only work while plugged in. The advice I found after perusing online would be to update BIOS. I've gone to Dell Support, had the site detect my Service TAG, and downloaded the manual BIOS update file(s). However, when I try to click on the new program, it brings me to this thing called "Insyde", which A.) asks for an ID and version and B.) won't work at all anyways since it says my battery needs to be at at least 10% for BIOS to be flashed. Now, I can't charge my computer at all since the battery is fried, since I'm basically running on electricity.
Not only am I unsure if a BIOS update will even fix my battery failure issue, but I can't even test it.

Hi everybody, and thank you in advance for the help.
I explain the problem: after the update of the BIOS to the version 1.2.2, the laptop rebooted and showed the following message:

Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller Series v1.36 (11/26/14)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
No Boot Device Found. Press any key to reboot the machine

I used ePSA diagnostic and the tests were all OK, then I tried to restore the default settings in the BIOS, but nothing changed.
Has somebody any advice to solve the problem??

Resolution: Dell Inspiron 5459/5559/5759 BIOS Update - Will not boot after update
"No boot drive found", "PXE... Media test failure"
If you updated from 1.0.x to 1.1.5 (or other) and find yourself scratching your head in a panic that your system won't boot up, reboot and press and hold the F2 key when you see the Dell logo (shortly after restart). When the bios settings page opens, click restore settings to default, save, and then exit. Your system should boot to windows now :-)
If you don't care about default Keyboard LED brightness or Fn Lock key default status, disregard the following:
After your system restarts into windows, restart and repeat to enter bios. There are some minor settings that change -- They are minor and don't affect performance.  Under System Configuration, Keyboard brightness changes from dim to bright. Under Post Boot, Fn lock key changes to unlocked.
Have a nice day. Hopefully if you're reading this you already figured that out on your own.

A:Dell Inspiron 5459/5559/5759 BIOS Update Error - WILL NOT REBOOT

I am facing the exact issue for my 5559 laptop after updating bios from Dell update site.
It had 1.1.5 if i remember correctly, and update was for 1.1.6 using Inspiron_5459_1.1.6.exe
Only problem, reset to default settings does not solve it for me. Its still the same PXE E61 Media test failure and NO Bot device found error.
Is there a way to boot from usb and flash it to original version ?

I have the Dell Inspiron 518 desktop with 64 bit Vista, and attempted to update the BIOS to version 1.0.7 last evening.  I closed all open programs, disabled anti-virus, and ran the BIOS update as administrator.  The update began and asked if I would like to update from version 1.0.5 to 1.0.7, and I clicked on the update button.  The BIOS flash began by deleting the previous BIOS and then attempted to install the new 1.0.7 BIOS but produced an error message similar to "error writing BIOS to block," an the only option was to cancel the update.  I knew I did not have any BIOS installed at that point, but my computer was still operating so I made an additional attempt to re-download the 1.0.7 BIOS and re-install it.  No good, it would not even run now.  There was no turning back and no way to reinstall either the previous BIOS or the new one.  Eventually I tried to restart the computer, and it would not start.
Dell is sending a tech next week to replace the motherboard on this otherwise great computer that is only about two months old.
DO NOT upgrade the BIOS on a Inspiron 518 with 64 Bit Vista to version 1.0.7.  The upgrade does not work and will kill your motherboard.

A:Dell Inspiron 518 BIOS v1.0.7 64 Bit Vista DO NOT UPGRADE BIOS

No it happened to me too.  Dell is replacing the motherboard under warranty but I was told somewhat firmly not to update the BIOS unless advised by a technican.  In my defense the BIOS update was listed as "recommended" under the download section for this unit on the Dell support website.
I would recommend to avoid two phone calls (over 40 minutes each) to tech support and several days waiting for a new motherboard, not to update the BIOS at this time.
Thankfully it is being covered under warranty.

Hello everyone. I have DELL INSPIRON N5010. I was using windows 7 home basic 32 bit os. I wanted to change it to windows 7 ultimate. So I have inserted windows 7 Installation disk into CD drive. Then I went to through the installation and I chose the Custom as the installation type. When the partition page appeared, I have formatted all the disks including C which contains windows files. Then I got 298 GB unallocated space. Then I split them in to 4 partitions. Then I have selected one partition to install the windows. Then installation started .
Copying windows files succeeded.
Expanding Windows files(0%) is still be like that for 20 minutes. Then I got the error message like,
windows cannot install required files. error code 0x80070017
And I thought it would be the installation disk problem. But it works fine in other systems.
I tried several disks. No use. Also I got another problem.
when system boots I tried to enter into BIOS using F2 and F12 which was mentioned in screen. But it did not enter into the BIOS, Instead it goes to the installation.
I do not know what to do. Help me to get rid of this.

Thanks in advance.

A:BIOS not working in DELL INSPIRON.

I would suggest using a different DVD drive, or maybe copying the installation files to a USB stick (4gb or bigger) and performing a USB install.
The error 0x80070017 translates to "CRC Error" which means that the files that are being copied from the disk are not making it to the hard drive with the same structure, meaning that the "original" files on the disk are being modified/changed/corrupted while being copied to the "destination" location on your hard drive during the install.
This usually means either a bad DVD, or a read error on the DVD drive.
The easiest thing is to make a USB drive to install Window s7 (and it's WAY faster than DVD too!)
I hope this helps.

Hello, just purchased a dell inspiron 660, it's great, and it boots up really fast, it's got an i5! I love it! Only problem is there are no bios options showing on startup. (Just the dell logo, and a rotating wheel, then it goes straight to the login screen)

I tap f2, and f12, but nothing happens, it just continues on to the login screen.

Maybe it's not a major problem but I always like to see if there are options I can change in the bios.

Perhaps your method is incorrect.

Restart your computer.
At the first text on the screen or when the Dell logo appears, tap F2 until the message Entering Setup appears.

/forcebios is the key command in DOS! If you have been struggling to restore your BIOS to an earlier version you will immediately realize how important this little command is.
You will need to use it after the .exe, after the c: prompt in DOS to revert to an older BIOS. It will look something like this when you enter it (the 530_1016.exe is the name of the 1.0.16 BIOS I found through Google):
And this allows you to return to the older BIOS after you have created a Boot USB, placed the BIOS .exe on the USB, inserted the USB and booted using F12.
I love old Dell desktop PCs! Especially the Vostro 200, but an Inspiron 530 recently gave me a real headache.
The most recent BIOS for the Inspiron 530 (BIOS 1.0.18) has all sorts of bugs.. not least that it will forget BIOS/CMOS settings (giving CMOS checksum error) and will need to have the time and date and boot order reset if someone switches off the mains.
The only fix for me, having renewed the CMOS battery and  wiped the CMOS using the jumper (to no avail) was to restore an earlier BIOS (I chose 1.0.16).
Having created the Boot USB (following links on Google) and having put the old BIOS 1.0.16 on the USB and pressed F12 at startup I ran the old BIOS. But the DOS message I got was:
New bios version is low! ALL files removed!
This meant that I was trying to load an older BIOS and it wasn't going to allow me to do that.
After spending hours scanning the web I found an old, long closed, thread ... Read more

my computer was running fine and normal, until two days ago.

i rebooted, and left my ipod plugged in. normally in this scenario, the computer will boot to the dell loading screen as it always does, and the progress bar will stick at about 95 percent. so i press power, unplug the ipod, and restart normally. this time, however, on reboot i came up with a "Hard disk #***********-A95B, the primary system HDD, is protected by a password authentication system" message...a *similar* message has been discussed at length on these boards. it seems that very few people have the exact same message...there are more starting with "This computer, #blahblahblah"...

and from what i've heard, HDD passwords are close to impossible to break. if anyone can help me out, i would like to know how this could have happened, and what i can do to [at the very least] preserve the data on the disk or remove the password.

the curious thing is that after reading the forum, i came under knowledge that a password can be generated using information from my computer...which was unsuccessful over the phone with dell. they provided me a password which they had "generated," and it did not work. however, the tech support woman was almost arguing with me that the HDD password was the same as the bios/system password. i have seen other peoples' messages, and they are seemingly different (system/computer password as opposed to hard disk). am i wrong to think ... help is desparately appreciated. thanks :]Click to expand...

According to my big book of HD issues, the asterisks mean that the IDE section of the drive is flumped, or your IDE on the mobo is, one of the two.

It should so a series of letters and numbers, if so then it can be unlocked by dell assuming you can prove ownership.

Yes the HD and the BIOS Password are different, actually there are 4, admin, config, setup and the HD.

The easiest way to find out is to hook the HD to a an IDE on a desktop PC and see if it can be seen, if its Locked (ie passworded) it will show as a zero sized drive, if however its flumped, chances are the BIOS wont detect it full stop.

If it is unlocked and accessible copy of the data and scrap the drive and get a new one, now would be a good time to get a decent brand and maybe a size increase.

If it's flumped or locked and dell wont help then they make great paperweights.

If you are referring to a Hidden Protected Area on the hard drive, then no, the BIOS passwords are not stored there. They are stored in the firmware on the motherboard itself.

File Size:6 MB
Format DescriptionThis file format consists of a BIOS executable file. The Universal (Windows/MS DOS) format can be used to install from Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows 2000, NT, Windows 9X, Windows ME or a MS DOS environment.

there is no mentioning of windows 10...

Was it a program that you were running that gave you this message?  It all depends on where you got it from, if it was from Support Assist it most likely is okay, but just want to make sure that you are getting the right one and that it isn't some pop up that comes up on a website or something like that.

A:Dell Inspiron 531 no signal on monitor can't get to bios

Open the case and disconnect everything from the main board. Remove all add-in cards and disconnect keyboard and mouse. Leave only the power supply and monitor connected. If the screen still does not light up, take the power supply to a local shop and have them test it. If the power supply is good, you have narrowed the problem to main board, memory and processor. If you have more than one memory stick, try them one at a time.

Some time ago, my Dell Inspiron 6000 developed a fault in that, whilst in Windows, the laptop would freeze up completely and required a hard shutdown. I diagnosed the problem to a fault with the onboard Broadcom RJ45 network interface card; I disabled the onboard NIC in the BIOS and all was well.

I recently needed to check a router LAN cable in a remote area, so used my laptop. My intention was to enable the NIC, check the cable and then disable the NIC again. Unfortunately, having saved the information to enable the onboard NIC in the BIOS and rebooted, the laptop will now not POST and I cannot access the BIOS to disable the NIC. The laptop begins the normal start sequence, but then hangs before the POST would start.

I know that if only I could disable the onboard NIC in the BIOS, all would be returned to normal. If anybody could help with information regarding accessing the BIOS in this situation, I'd be very grateful. I've even been to the extreme of dis-assembling the laptop and removing the rear RJ45 port from the motherboard in case it was a hardware problem - but I'm afraid that didn't work.

Thanks in advance,

If I change settings in BIOS by enabling LEGACY MODE and disabling UEFI mode, windows DVD boots but when setup begins and there is time to select partition for windows installation it tells me" This is GPT style partition and windows can not be installed on it.I tried googling and found a trick to go into CONSOL and CLEANED my hard drive then windows installed but the same problem occurs everytime I want to install windows. I have to format my hard drive everytime.Previously I was having A03 and it was working very good. Please tell me how to downgrade my BIOS so that my laptop runs in normal.

Did a new install with a new disk, WINDOWS won't install same error.
New BIOS only support Linux (I did a successfull Ubuntu install with Legacy Support).
Only UEFI is supported with BIOS 01.05.A04 FOR WINDOWS.
To install windows : use a USB WINDOWS UEFI boot stick, and then windows can be installed.

there's no chip to short in this model of laptop. bios chip is 8-pin serial flash chip(SST 25vf080 for instance), but you won't remove password if you "short" it. the password is stored in KBC controller.

Hi everyone,
First of all, please excuse my English ;)
Someone gave me his former laptop N5010, the HDD was broken. I spent some money to buy a SSD and to upgrade the RAM, everything was working fine, and I don't know why I tried to update the BIOS...
I downloaded the A15 version on the Dell website, started the EXE file, and while updating from A4 to A15, the screen went black. I waited for a long moment and decided to remove the battery.
As a result, now the laptop is not working anymore.Black screen with beep while "booting".
I followed many "tricks" to recover the bios, they were all marked as solved for everyone but me, this one for exemple :
I extracted a rom file from the EXE bios update with Windows CMD prompt C:\BIOS.EXE /writeromfile , with Phoenix Tool I created a bootable USB, put the BIOS.ROM (renamed BIOS.WPH) on the flash drive, removed the battery, plugged the flash drive, hold the end button while plugging the AC cord ... But nothing interesting happened ...
I tried this solution from Dell's community :
Still not working...
So, if you have any ideas, it will really help me.

If your trying to change a bios setting or Reformat any of the newer Dell Laptop's you may run into this issue! There is an Administrator password you will be prompted for. I believe this is created at the factory and unplugging the bios battery no longer does the trick! I tried many different passwords combos and found that:

<dell> all lowercase and minus the brackets works for a few of the newer Dell Laptops

Good Luck,

A:Dell Bios Admin Password/Inspiron 1720

That makes no sense at all. If it were true then Dell would have to provide the password as part of the information it provides to customers when they buy the laptop. Anything else would subject them to being sued.

Hello to all,
I want to report a problem with BIOS update for Win7 64-bit OS on my Dell Inspiron 3543 laptop. After BIOS update from A06 to A07 (or A08 the symptoms are the same) windows 7 freezes on the start (after welcome screen). I have found that there is a problem with service called  "Multimedia Class Scheduler". When it is disabled the OS starts normally (except services connected with "Multimedia Class Scheduler"), but when this service is enabled OS freezes and you cannot do anything.
It would be nice if this error can be fixed, because I also want to upgrade my laptop with latest BIOS fix. Is there anybody with the same problem, who manage to resolve it? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi all,

My little brother has gave that Dell inspiron n4110 BIOS a password and now he has forgot it. I know I can remove that password by opening the laptop but I don't want to open it. I can access to the OS which is Windows 7 and also can reinstall OSs by pressing F12 key, but when I want to go into the BIOS setup (which I should press the F2 key for that) that password is required. I've heard there are some codes removing that but I'm not sure is it real or not.
Any solution for that laptop?

A:How to remove Dell inspiron n4110 BIOS password

Dell have recently added additional security to some of their laptop range - if you have somehow triggered this security you will have to contact Dell, and supply them with full details of the laptop, including serial and reference and full proof of purchase - they can then remove the password free of charge

Hi guys, I've been using Unified Remote on my Android phone to use my laptop for a while now. I recently just learned about the Wake On Lan feature and it is something I'd really like to see working (what's the point of remote control if I still have to get up to turn on my laptop!)

I've been trying to follow the directions and setting up my Power Management options in my BIOS, however I've run into some issues. First of all, when I go into my BIOS settings, there isn't even an option for Power Management or the like in order to set remote wakeup. So I don't even know where to proceed from here.

I have a Dell Inspiron N5110 with the A11 BIOS. I'm running Windows 8 64-bit.

I'd be more than happy to provide any additional details and even pictures of my BIOS screen options if my description isn't clear enough.

Thank you!

A:Dell Inspiron N5110 Wake On Lan BIOS issues

I've been trying to follow the directions and setting up my Power Management options in my BIOSClick to expand...

What directions? How do you know that any change is needed or possible in the BIOS?

I probably shouldn't be posting here, as I have never used WOL, but I thought it was just a matter of enabling the feature in the Properties of the adapter (in Device Manager). It does make sense that it could be an item in the BIOS; I just don't recall ever reading that anywhere.

Hello i have a inspiron 9100 laptop that thinks it has 266mhz memory, no matter which memory you give it!

It stops booting and tells you to install 333 or 400mhz memory and to hit f1 to shutdown.

I tried fooling it by removing the bios battery and turning it on, well now it tells you the time is off and when you go there and correct the time it goes ahead and boots just fine.
Turn it off and backon then it remembers that it thinks it has 266ddr and to hit f1 to shutdown.

I tried updating the bios flash but it gives me an error message saying that it doesnt support this hardware..

I have several 9100 mbs....can i remove a chip and reinstall on this one and maybe fix it????

A:Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop, which is bios chip?

Not likely. The BIOS chip is soldered in... and doesn't really seem to be the problem anyway.
I would remove one memory module, and see what it does with the other, then reverse the memory modules... as it very likely could be a failed memory module, or one improperly inserted.

this is a dell inspiron 2500 , its already been refurbed, (still got the sticker on bottom), p3 proc, i don't know bout RAM, hdd capacity, ect. cant do ANYTHING without the hd. the owner bought it secondhand, on the story from the previous owner that it just needed a new hd, and the password would be removed with the old drive. well, thats their request to me; replace the hd and install XP on it. i do light refurb work on mostly desktops, and pasword work hasn't been an issue..but they want me to try to save the cost of the new drive, ect, ect. so, having seen other posts about dell bios pwd fixes, i had to ask!! anyone know how to go about this? if i could get into bios, perhaps changing the boot order could boot my XP disk, but i dont know that will even help, cause it seems the password is stored on the mobo, just a feeling.... any advice?

How to Downgrade Dell Inspiron N3542 BIOS from A12 to A06?
I upgraded my BIOS to A12. It change my Legacy BIOS to UEFI. Now I want to install windows afresh but it didn’t boot into windows disc or USB flash drive while secure boot mode enabled.
If I disable secure boot mode it boots into windows disc but pointer does not work in windows setup. I attached an external mouse and installed windows but when it finished installing, pointer don’t appear and touchpad not working even after installing latest touchpad driver.
If I change my UEFI to Legacy BIOS mode and boot into windows disk it install windows. While in windows setup it asks me to change GPT partition style to MBR partition style. I googled and did this but the medthod compelled me to clean me hard drive and loss all the data. Everytime I install winodws I have to clean my hard drive.
The installed windows is not working well with many errors and not allowing updates and many more things that I am not able to describe here.
I want to rollback my BIOS to previous version that is A06 so that I get all these problems solved.
I downloaded previous version of BIOS from Dell website but when I run it It tells me Dell don’t recommend to downgrade and closed.
Please guide me how can I downgrade it.

So, I got a Inspiron 3537 i5. Nice laptop for it's price. Downloaded all the manuals, made my recovery DVDs. All was well in my world.
First thing I noticed is that there is no info in the manuals for tweaking the BIOS and since it is my first experience with a UEFI bios I was a bit disappointed. Is there a manual available for it?
Next I upgraded ATI Drivers to 13.12. I am an old user who always knew that updates were usually a good thing to do. Got in the same problem as many others with PC screen not waking up from sleep.
Thought I would do a recovery from the disk, but after trying various combinations (Ctl+F11, F8, F12 etc) I couldn't find a way to boot in the Recovery console. I did the recovery from my DVD and the laptop works fine.
Does anybody know how to add in UEFI bios a boot option to the Recovery partition? I undersstand that I have to create a new boot option using "Add boot option" and the two options available are to boot to the 1st (windows EFI) or 2nd (recovery partition), but the path for the recovery efi file to be loaded is unknown (+ you can't have access to the recovery partition to see the contents of it from windows). Any suggestions?

A:Inspiron 3537: Boot to Dell recovery UEFI Bios

Still haven't found a bios manual, but anyway. I found a combination of drivers for graphics that does work and allows sleep function without a glitch.
Uninstalled amd (complete), reboot, intall iris, reboot, install latest amd. Ati probably fixed the issue that did not allow wake from sleep. I downloaded them using amdautodetect utility and intel driver update utility.

Just call Dell, verify ownership, and they'll issue the master system password you can use to clear the CMOS password.

Last week, it became apparent that the battery in my Dell Inspiron 6000 was not charging: The battery light flashes yellow intermittently while the computer is plugged in (both while it is on and while it is off), and flashes orange if I unplug the AC Adapter. Here is what I've done:

1. Checked the Dell Quickset Battery Metter -- all the fields (total battery charge, primary, and secondary) were grayed out)
2. Checked my Power Management settings. It's set to activate a low battery "text only" alarm at 10% and to go into hybernation at the critical battery charge of 3%.
3. Checked the Power Meter -- The total power remaining is "Unknown." Under the batteries available, it says "not present."
4. Pressed the status button on the battery -- all lights lit up.
5. Ran Dell Diagnostic Express Test -- got the "Error Code 0F00:136C - IDE device failed. Blank media or no media is present in optical drive."
6. Ran Dell Diagnostic Symptom Tree and chose the symptom "System will not run off battery" -- All tests passed.
7. Ran the Dell Diagnostic Custom Test for the battery and the sensors -- All tests passed.
8. Downloaded the Inspiron 6000 BIOSFlash A09 and tried to run it -- Got the message "AC Adapter and battery must be plugged in before the system BIOS can be flashed" over and over again.

I have removed the battery, replaced it, etc. I don't want to buy another battery if it's not necessary. And I do... Read more

The DVD Rom/CD writer drive was failing to read many discs so I took the bare drive out of a Toshiba laptop, put it in the Dell sleeve and it works. Not tested the CD burning though. Both old and new are Sony drives of similar 2003/4 age with different model numbers. DW-D56A-DS for the original one, I think. But when I boot the BIOS fails to recognise the drive and it wont boot. Pulling the drive out whilst booting solves it.

Is there any way round this BIOS problem as the connector may wear out with this much disconnection? How can I tell what drives might work? I could buy a new 20 bare drive of a similar model. The Dell one with sleeve is 5 times the price, which is more than the laptop is worth.

Several second hand ones are for sale on eBay but I am reluctant as I read that some Dell models like this one were unreliable, so a second hand one will last a short time if it works at all.

Alternative might be just to replace the laser but are they available and can they be changed without going though a complex setup/calibration routine?

A:Dell Inspiron 510m DVD drive failed. BIOS detection

By trial and error with old DVD drives I had I found that a Sony SBW 242U from a Sony Vaio laptop is recognized by the BIOS. So there is presumably a narrow range of models that the BIOS will recognize.

But the tray bezel is slightly different so you cant swap over the bezels. Instead, if you want to retain the original drive eject lever, you have to file off some plastic from the new bezel. Check also its not binding with the laptop case on one edge of the bezel. File as necessary.

Hi! I've been pulling my hair out for the past 2 days trying to repair
an Inspiron 2600. It cannot boot from USB, its floppy drive is dead,
and its optical drive isn't working too well. The 2600 is from 2002 and
I can tell it's been dropped and cracked a few times.
A friend gave me this ancient laptop in (somewhat) working condition.
It ran Windows XP okay and booted up fine. I thought that it would be
faster with Xubuntu (a lightweight linux distro). And so, I attempted
to install Xubuntu 10.10 via DVD using the laptop's DVD drive. I was
unable to install Xubuntu nor was I able to boot it up as a live OS due
to some video problems. Determined, I quickly downloaded and burned the
alternate version of the Xubuntu install. This time, I was able to
install Xubuntu (after a few tries, due to the shotty optical drive) but
it failed to install GRUB, a bootloader. This resulted in the laptop
displaying "Operating System not found". I then reformatted the HD and
reinstalled Xubuntu, this time with GRUB and I still got "Operating
System not found". Thinking something was wrong with the installation, I
re-installed Grub probably 10 times until I gave up and decided to re
install Windows.
After completely reformatting the C: drive, I installed Windows XP Pro
SP3; but I still got "Operating System not found". Assuming it was an
MBR problem, I used a boot cd compilation's various MBR too... Read more

Go into BIOS setup options and load default settings. Then try to boot again. You may enter advanced repair options at this time automatically. Scan the drive, let it run it's repairs, and see where that get's you. If that does not work, a wipe and re-load of your OS is necessary.

Hi, I have several problems with my laptop. It began when it sometimes stuck on first logo. I did recovery but it didn't help. So I tried to flash new bios A13(I had A06) from windows. After restart I could see only black screen. After unsuccessfull trying of everything I disconnected CMOS battery to reset bios and since this act I get 5 beeps at startup even if I changed battery for new one. I finally boot to windows but: Bios stayed unchanged(A06) and my battery is now on 0%, it says charging but it doesn't charge. I did DELL diagnostic tests from boot menu with 100% success. In these tests battery show 1%. I tried to flash bios again(from DOS, v. A08) and the same result, black screen at first (for long time)and after boot BIOS stayed the same - A06. Thank you for any help or advice. Martin

A:DELL Inspiron 14Z 5423 - 5 beeps, battery 1%, cannot flash bios

Hi Maca76,
I’d advise that you load defaults in the BIOS. Please follow the steps mentioned below to load the BIOS to defaults to check if then you are able to update the BIOS to A08 version on the system.

Reboot the computer.
When prompted during POST, press the <F2> key to enter the setup screen.
On the System Setup screen, press the <F9> key.
Press the <Enter> key on Yes to Load Optimized Defaults and restart the computer.

Also, Check if the AC adapter is detected under AC adapter type in BIOS.

I am using Windows 8.1 (orignally system was preloaded with Win 8) which is causing a few small problems like the touchpad notification light (enable or disable light-small orange LED) is not working, airplane mode has multiple entries like when Fn+F2 is pressed, airplane mode is enabled but system shows it as disabled. So does these problems is solved in this BIOS?
Is it safe to update to A11 or is this some kind of beta BIOS?

Or maybe anybody reading this, has had the chance to use the bios A11?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I have an Inspiron 1720 running Vista Home Premium and I wish to upgrade to Windows 7.   The Microsoft Compatibility Test indicated there would be no problem.   However when I tried to install Windows 7 Home Premium it stalled saying I needed to update the BIOS version (A03).   Having checked Dell Support the latest version is A09.   When I try to download it all I get is a Download Manager which tells me there are no files to download.   I believe the file I need is 1702_A09.EXE.   How do I install this BIOS update?

A:BIOS Update Inspiron 1720

Please download the below BIOS file for your system.
Inspiron 1720 BIOS ZIP
Do let me know if you have any issues, the battery must be charged and connected to the AC adpt during the update.
All open applications have to be closed. Any interruptions during the installation could render the motherboard useless.

Dear all,
I have here an Inspiron 20 3043 unit with an old A03 bios. I am trying to update it to the current latest A12 version, using the Dell official executable file for Windows. The Windows part goes all right, then it reboots (in fact it does not, as this unit never reboots - I believe because of the old Bios - it shuts down), so I have to wait until it shuts down, then I start it by pressing the power button, and then the InsydeH2O Secure Flash update shows up, but it says "Error : Decompress failed". Then my only choice is to press a key to reboot (again, it shuts down, currently being incapable of rebooting).
I have tried to use the A04 Bios file, that's the same issue.
My Bios files are located in Windows under My Document.
I have tried to unzip and then uncompress the BIN file to get an .fd file for the Bios, put it on a FAT32 usb stick, and then boot using WIN+B, but all I get is the diagnostic app from Dell.
Any idea on how I can get this Bios updated?

Hello everyone,

First, i posted here because im not sure if the thread is being read any longer..if i did wrong i apologize for it, i wont do this again. Im just a little desperate with this problem...

Ok, my problem. My aunt bought me a dell inspiron 8000 for my birthday; she doesnt know anything about computers but she's a great lady, i really apreciate this gift. She gave it to me and as i powered it on i saw the bios password screen. I started reading across this site about this password thing and decided to try that shorting method. I located the chip labeled 24WC02J on the board and proceeded to short 3rd and 6th pins...nothing...when i short and power on laptop goes off right after powering on. If i do the shorting pin by pin on 3rd and 6th using the paragon shorter with the 3rd pin it powers on but still that pass screen...with the 6th pin it goes off just after powering on. Maybe theres some trick on the 6th far as i know 6th is the clock pin for the chip and 3rd is the A2 pin ( i guess is an input)... So i guess the shorting method wont work for me...

I visited IdidMyC600 and the paragon site and also read the descriptive pdf at this sites...also took a look at the pictures and stuff at this sites....but i guess this thing wont work with the shorting methods...

So i was wondering if rustam could help me i know you are really busy out there but if you just got a minute for me i'd... Read more

Only a quarter of it is visible. I can see the laotp is up running in BIOS screen, but can not make any change in BIOS without seeing it on the screen. Please help. Thanks a lot.
By the way, this is what I did before run into this problem.I select enable UEFI boot. I also select enable secure boot (I think this may be the cause of the problem). But I think reset bios to default, which I did, should clear these settings I made.

I installed a Roswill RC-302 Parallel port PCI card into my Dell Inspiron 546s. I'm using it to connect to a cnc plama cutter table.  My cnc manual says that I need to enter the bios and change the mode of the card to EPP 1.9. However when I go into the bios I don't see any settings in any of the menu options related to the parallel port. I installed the card and downloaded the driver.  When I go to the device manager it shows up and seems to be enabled fine. Right now it is labeled as LPT1. However,  the addresses in the resource tab show up as E800 and E400. That doesn't seem to match any normal hexadecimal addresses?  My cnc machine manual said that it is best to set the card to the address of would I do that? Is this simply changing it to LPT2? I have Windows 7 home office pro.

Thanks for any help!

Hi,I have a Dell Inspiron 15 3542 laptop, and the battery life (as what it is saying) usually reaches about 4 to 6 hours depending on usage.
Suddenly this evening while working on some codes I noticed that the LED light at the front right edge side is blinking white and red. When I plugged out the AC power the laptop  went dead.
At restart the BIOS program or whatever it is called is saying that my battery has experienced a permanent failure and needs to be replaced, and seems not to be detecting the battery at all.
But on Windows 8 the battery is being detected. I even managed to run a powercfg /batteryreport on it and it is said to be working fine. The OS is also reporting battery OK, no "the battery needs replacement" or any problems are being reported. Even the DELL diagnostics found no problems on my battery.
My BIOS is now on the latest one and the DELL utility is already refusing to re-flash the bios.

My Dell Inspiron D530 won't boot, even to the BIOS, when my ACER X1261P DLP projector is connected to the monitor port. I am using the motherboard graphics (no separate video card). The computer works perfectly when:
1. I boot it with a standard LCD monitor.
2. I boot it with NO monitor attached, and then plug the Acer projector VGA cable into the monitor port after the keyboard lights blink.
If I attempt the boot the computer with the ACER projector attached, it turns on (front panel power light turns on, fans run fast and then slow, which is normal, network activity light comes on) but the keyboard lights don't blink on, and even though the project is getting a 800x600 video signal from the display card, the screen is totally blank, black. It will sit in this state indefinitely. If I press the power button, the power turns off immediately. It behaves this way no matter whether the projector is on or in sleep mode.
I am using the latest released BIOS from Dell (1.0.18). Since the BIOS isn't even completing its boot, I don't think there is an issue with Operating System or drivers. I've tried both video graphics settings in the BIOS (use on-board video only, check for separate video first) and there is no difference.

A:Dell Inspiron D530 won't boot to BIOS with ACER projector connected

That's an unusual compatibility issue. I assume you have confirmed the projector and VGA cable are fine and work with another system? Have you tried another VGA cable? Could be a damaged cable.

Using a separate graphics card may work.

Hi! I've been pulling my hair out for the past 2 days trying to repair an Inspiron 2600. It cannot boot from USB, its floppy drive is dead, and its optical drive isn't working too well. The 2600 is from 2002 and I can tell it's been dropped and cracked a few times.

A friend gave me this ancient laptop in (somewhat) working condition. It ran Windows XP okay and booted up fine. I thought that it would be faster with Xubuntu (a lightweight linux distro). And so, I attempted to install Xubuntu 10.10 via DVD using the laptop's DVD drive. I was unable to install Xubuntu nor was I able to boot it up as a live OS due to some video problems. Determined, I quickly downloaded and burned the alternate version of the Xubuntu install. This time, I was able to install Xubuntu (after a few tries, due to the shotty optical drive) but it failed to install GRUB, a bootloader. This resulted in the laptop displaying "Operating System not found". I then reformatted the HD and reinstalled Xubuntu, this time with GRUB and I still got "Operating System not found". Thinking something was wrong with the installation, I re-installed Grub probably 10 times until I gave up and decided to re install Windows.

After completely reformatting the C: drive, I installed Windows XP Pro SP3; but I still got "Operating System not found". Assuming it was an MBR problem, I used a boot cd compilation's various MBR tools and bootloaders to try to fix the problem, ... Read more

A:Solved: Exclamation point next to HD in BIOS; cannot boot. Dell Inspiron 2600

I feel really really really stupid right now. I just realized the exclamation point indicates that a particular boot device is disabled. Simply highlighting a boot device and pressing shift+1 will remove the exclamation point. My problem is now fixed.

It's amazing how overlooking one small detail located on the right help sidebar can lead to such a headache.

I recently purchased a quadcore Inspiron 518.
I was really disappointed to find out that there is no virtualization support in the BIOS it came with, (should have done more research.)
Are there any plans for a release to update the BIOS that would include this feature?  Or any work arounds I can do in order to have virtualization support from the motherboard/processor?

A:BIOS update for Inspiron 518 that provides Virtualization support

I am also interested in any news on this.  I have Windows 7 Professional and was hoping to use the virtualization for Windows XP Mode.  As it stands right now, I cannot enable it in the BIOS as it is not visible anywhere.

Last week I updated my machine to the latest BIOS from Dell, file name 7437A10.exe. The machine rebooted fine after the installation and worked fine for a day or two. But now my machine will not boot pass the DELL logo (the progress bar at the bottom keeps spinning). The hard disk light lights up and blinks, indicating that the system is accessing the hard disk.
I tried a few things to get the machine to boot, with no success. What I tried was:

press Start and wait for the machine to boot for about 5 minutes, Iooking at the logo
press and hold the start button for about 30seconds
detach the battery, press the start button for about 30seconds to release any remaining current, attach the battery and tried to boot
reset the bios settings to default

None of these options worked. Can you help me figure out what the problem is?
I'm running Windows 10.

Thank you in advance.

A:Inspiron 7437 WILL NOT REBOOT after BIOS Update

Why did you update the bios? Laptops rarely need bios updates and if you do update the bios it should be done before upgrading the operating system. Dell has all the drivers you needed for win 10 here--
Try booting to Safe Mode or to the repair disk you made. You might be able to run the diagnostics to test the hardware and do a custom test of the hard drive. Bios update failures usually do not "work for a few days." It might be a coincidence and something else is causing the problem. Use the links on the Support page to get more info.

ok first of all let me start off with audio i bought this laptop earlier this month and i noticed after a week tht one of the speakers wasnt making any sound so i looked it up and most people said its probably a driver or a balance so i checked all sorts of sound tests balance left speaker right speaker mute or not mute (only the left speaker works) i uninstalled the drivers (realtek) tried it out with the trusted(sarcasm) windows 8 drivers  only sound tht came was left side i also checked it with it dell diagnostics  both  in windows and before windows it showed tht everything was perfect and the bios dell diagnostics had a sound check so i tried that and only had sound in the left one (so im guessing its not a windows problem). So if i have missed sumthing here pls enlighten me also i havent installed vlc or wutever sound mods so i didnt blow it up infact i dont think i ever even made my sound volume goto 100.Second problem is the damn grahics driver first time i opened my laptop it told me to check my graphics driver and started acting out (my screen was blurry) so i tried to install the latest driver which didnt help so i returned the laptop and got a new one..same problem after which i discovered that theres a specific driver that it recommended which works. Now  if any of you r assuming that oh so what just cuz the graphics driver isnt up todate it should atleast perform normally not act like sumthings broken or overheated ...well no it does anyho ... A:problems with dell inspiron 15 3521 : bios , graphics driver , disk cashe

azk_1yes it was the pre windows dell dignostics the one u get from f12 wen u turn the pc on
That might have been the PSA diagnostics. The Dell 32-bit Diagnostics audio tests play a short piece of music, but the PSA tests just play the system tones. Anyway, you wrote "and the bios dell diagnostics had a sound check so i tried that and only had sound in the left one". If you did not hear audio in the right speaker during the diagnostics then the speaker needs to be replaced.
azk_1bt it nevr said it self tht the speakers have a problem it said everything was fine
It doesn't matter what the tests says -- it just matters if you can hear the audio the tests play. If you can't hear it then there is a hardware problem.
azk_1and what abt the error its also before windows start screen then it says checking media then fail whats tht abt
Sorry I only know about audio. This is the Dell Laptop Audio discussion board. You might want to post on one or more of the other boards with your other questions.

Has anyone else noticed that after the A09 bios update to your 11-3147 it takes way longer to boot up? It takes on average 15 seconds of staring at the Dell logo before Windows 10 starts to boot. I installed an SSD drive once It gets to the point of the OS booting it's lightning fast...just the bios post seems exceptionally slow. I'll try reinstalling the previous bios to confirm. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this happen also. I also have an 11-3148 and there was a bios update for it on the same day. It didn't affect it's boot speed at all and in fact seemed to cure the "plugged in not charging" issue that it had.

A:Inspiron 11-3147 A09 bios update - slow post

I'm using a Samsung Evo 850 256Gb.
Here's an update to this strange story: Yesterday I reverted back to A07 bios. bios went in all fine but then can't boot into windows. It doesn't see my drive. it does in the bios but not during post apparently. All boot and drive settings look the same as they were before. Tried a repair install of 10 which actually worked for me this time (previously I've only had failures for some reason). It finishes and gives me a log file of the apps and such it killed in the process. Mostly just the Dell Apps which is no big deal. Rebooted and once again boot times are nice and speedy as I was hoping. And that's not all folks! To top it all off, it now sleeps properly instead of just shutting down like I was whining about in my last post. Bizarre to say the least. This was my last ditch effort. If this had failed I was going back to the dreaded 8.1. Used it all evening as I normally would and it's working flawlessly. Only thing I notice of any mention is the battery will not show 100% charge which is what the A09 bios update fixed. No biggie. It says 99% and I know it's fully charged. It really makes me wonder how much the guys at Dell check stuff out before it's released. Seems like every computer guy that's worked for my company is the same way....fix one bug but neglect to check if the fix affected anything else and walk away.
