Can't delete .3gp files in Win Vista

Q: Can't delete .3gp files in Win Vista

I used this forum to resolve a problem with deleting .3gp files in Vista. I also could not open these files.
As suggsted, I was able to delete some of these files while operating in safe mode. However, I was only able to delete all of the .3gp files after I downloaded and used the "Unlocker" application.
What I want to add is that before I noticed the problem with deleting the .3gp files I was consistently getting "Windows Explorer" failures.
Any thime I opened a folder that contained any of the affected .3gp files, the address bar for the window showed continuous activity that never ended. Then I would get Windows Explorer failures.
What was odd is that some of the .3gp files were OK and the videos were fine.

You should be able to copy or backup the files to the 7 disk. You may have to reinstall any programs that are runnig on the 32bit disk.

Trying to delete a video game .iso file from my computer. I keep getting the error message "windows cannot delete this file because it is being used in another program"...

I have tried several methods to no avail. I have tried:

1. Uninstalling the game
2. Unmounting all virtual drives.
3. Deleting all virtual drives.
4. Uninstalling all ISO programs (Magic ISO, Dameon Tools etc.)
5. Several Shutdowns and Reboots
6. Booting in safe mode
7. Creating a new admin account and trying to delete from there.
8. Deleting with DOS (ran as Admin)
9. Deleting with DOS (as Admin) with explorer.exe killed in Task Manager.
Basically everything I can think of. I get the same error message every time, even in DOS mode. I am pretty sure the file isn't being used by anything else, as I have deleted any program that can read .iso files. Since I downloaded the game on BitTorrent, I even went ahead and uninstalled BitTorrent and deleted all folders associated with BitTorrent in the event this might have something to do with the problem.

Also, the .iso file is functional. I played the game a few times and decided to delete it to free up some space on my hard drive, so I have no reason to suspect the file is corrupt, nor have I had any other problems with my computer. It just bugs me that I cant delete it.

I'm trying to delete 1500+ hidden files (located in different directories) from my flash memory. But when I highlight them all and choose "delete", I get the "Preparing to delete" dialogue which says:
Time remaining: Calculating...
Items remaining: Discovered 0 items (0 bytes)...
Speed: Calculating ...Click to expand...

And it stays like this FOREVER until I cancel the operation. It will only work when I delete about 50 files at a time, which I'm not willing to do every time.

I've tried this both on my laptop and desktop with Windows vista business/home premium service pack 1, and it still didn't work.

Any idea how I can solve this issue?

UPDATE: It appears that the issue occurs only when I'm deleting files locating in different directories through the 'search' function. It's still an issue though, and I'd like to delete all files of a specific kind instead of doing it through each and every directory.

Your help is much appreciated

some time ago, i read in an article that windows vista supported installation to an external USB 2.0 connected hard drive. This was back during beta 2. So i downloaded beta 2 and tried to install it on my external hard drive. It copied all the files to the hard drive, but, of course would not run. There was no way to uninstall it from the hard drive after that because it was a usb connected hard drive. I have tried everything i know of to do to delete this space hogging folders and files, but Windows XP won't let me delete them. How can i delete thes files?

I am trying to delete files from my Sansa Express which I use as an external USB drive. When I try to delete at the folder level, Vista tells me the "storage is write-protected" and that I should remove write-protection and try again. I am able to delete the files individually, however, with no problem at all.

When I go to Properties, the folders are read-only. The individual files are not read-only, and they delete fine individually. The problem is only encountered when I select a folder and try to delete it. I can not disable read-only from Properties, because it is grayed out.

It may or may not be relevant that most of these folders were loaded onto the drive from my other computer, which runs XP. However, not all those folders are running into this problem: only the ones which say "read-only" in Properties.

Things I've already tried:
There is no write-protection switch on the device. There is a hold switch, and that is definitely in the off position. So a switch is not the issue here.

I've gone through the lengthy and confusing process of taking ownership of files before, but there is no way to do that here. The only tab in the Properties screen is "General" and there's nothing in there I can click on or change.

I've also tried running Windows Explorer as Administrator, but that doesn't help either.

Formatting the drive is not a practical solution for me, because I can't just format it every time I encounter this problem.

Hey guys,

I tried to research the forum to see if anyone else is having issues with this and Google has been no help for me.
Whenever I try to remove a folder, I instantly get the message "This folder is shared with other people. If you delete this folder, it will no longer be shared" and it gives me the option to continue or cancel. After I press continue, Vista takes almost anywhere up to 10 mins (usually 6-7 mins) to delete the folder from my computer. Eventually the folders are gone but its extremely frustrating to have to wait almost 7-8 mins each folder to delete it.
I went to Manage Accounts and I see

Kevin-Administrator-Password Protected
ASP.NET Machine Account-Standard User-Password Protected
Guest-Guest Account Turned Off
Is there anyway around this prolonged time to delete folders. Will removing ASP.Net account remedy this problem? Because the account/group it saying its being shared by (USERS) isn't listed under Manage Accounts. Also I noticed this doesn't happen with new files I put on my cpu. I can delete those folders instantly. However any file almost older than 4 months ago, I get the 7-8 minute wait time.

I recently transferred a large quantity of files from my XP machine to my Vista x64 machine. All went well except for a small group of successfully transferred (Thunderbird) .eml files that cannot be opened, moved, copied, deleted, or renamed on the Vista machine.

If I try to delete the entire containing folder I get the following error:
This folder contains items whose names are too long for the recycle bin.

If I try to delete, open, copy or move the files themselves I get the following error:
The source file name(s) are larger than supported by the file system. Try moving to a location which has a shorter path name, or try renaming to shorter file names before attempting this operation.

The right-click context menu does not display the "rename" option (although rename is available for other files)

Anyone know how I can get rid of these?

A:Vista x64 / Cannot Delete Files - File Name Too Long

Can you move the folder to the root of the drive as in "C:" ? That may shorten the path enough to get them deleted. When you delete them hold the shift key to bypass the recycle bin.

I try to move files from one folder to another vista shows the dialog box, but doesn't move anything. . The progress bar doesn't move, and it seems as if the computer is just ignoring my request. This doesn't happen all the time. Quite often it will move with out a problem thankfully. When its not refusing to do what I tell it to do and I try to move a group of files it will move part of the list and then stop and I have to tell the computer to move the files again, and again a few more times. Sometimes it will move all but one. None of thise programs are R.O. btw

I often have a similar problem with delete and when I try to cut and paste from folder to folder or from a folder to a device. The dialog box comes up but nothing happens. None of the other quirks happen like when I try to move.

I don't get any error message, my resources don't seem to be getting tied up, and in task manager the status is always running.Thankfully I don't have to shut down the program in task manager

I'm only really having this problem with mp3 and flv files. If it is any other type of file the computer doesn't do this to me. I've noticed that it is less likely to do this with small files and small groups of files, but the computer really doesn't discriminate that often.

Hi, this is my first problem I'm posting, I apologise if I've confused some problems or not put the information down correctly.

Firstly, Spybot keeps finding an ever increasing number of temporary files in use that it cannot delete, 204 at the last count. I had deleted them in "safe mode with networking" but they have re-appeared.

My computer has other problems, I'll add them in case they are related but if they are not then if I could just have help with the above problem. My computer doesn't shutdown any more, it freezes at the 'shutting down page' and the windows installer service, doesn't work properly so I can't install some new software.

I have had this problem for a while now, and it has really started to wind me up lately.
I have read many threads and tutorials, and tried some out aswell, but nothing has worked unfortunately.
Whenever I try to move or delete a file, the box comes up:

But then once that pops up nothing else happens, and it just freezes. I have tried leaving it for a while and seeing if it just takes time but also nothing happened. Even if I click cancel, it freezes.

To close the window, I have to go into the task manager and close it from there, which restarts Windows Explorer.

When renaming a file or folder, I can type the name I want in, but once I press enter Windows Explorer freezes and I have to go into task manager again.

I know I might be one of millions to post about this problem, but I have tried my hardest and still cannot find a solution.

I have even tried two tutorials posted by an admin:

Cannot Rename or Move a File or Folder in Vista Fix
New Folder
but they did not work either.

If you think you have a solution, please tell me, as I am willing to try anything.

PS. If you need to know anything about my system just ask.

Hi all,

I was referenced to this forum by a member of a different comp community specific to overclocking. S/he told me that people here are more knowledgeable about my problem =p. I really hope you can help me.

As the topic title says, I cannot copy, paste, remove or cut files at all. It works fine when it comes to text editing but not when it comes to files. I can't seem to empty recycle bin either.

I'm the admin on my system with full priveledges, and I've never had this problem up until today. I tried a system restore to when it did work, but that didn't help, so I restored it back to how it is now.

Ran Avira virus scanner, nothing came up. I have absolutely no idea how this happened and I really want it to stop, as I need to adjust a few files and remove a lot from my recycle bin aswell. I've tried googling this problem but no answers came up.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, I really dont want to do a system re-install >.<

P.S: I also do not remember running a registry cleaner before I had this problem. I do have CCleaner installed and use it on occasion, I just can't remember when this copy/paste problem started because I haven't had to use functions like that for a while. Copy/pasting works when it comes to text on a side note.

I tried to update to Vista SP1 on an older Sony Vaio and consequently hit a brick wall with a corrupted volume. I've tried a TON of tips/tricks from various forums which included Startup Repair and various command line options. NONE worked and I am forced to use the Sony Vaio recovery discs. Will this delete any/all personal files already on the drive, or will they get shoved in a folder somewhere?

A:Will Vista/Vaio system recovery discs delete personal files?

The factory recovery process will overwrite and destroy everything that's currently on the C: drive. That's why you are supposed to keep backups of all your personal files on a separate drive or on optical discs while you are able to do so, and not wait until disaster strikes which prevents you from copying anything.

Hello all.

Here's a screengrab of my partitions:

HDD is the XP partition that came with the computer.

HDD7 is the partition on which I installed Windows 7.

I only use Windows 7 now, so HDD is just wasting space. Basically, to avoid the trouble of deleting partitions and making the other one active and all that:

Since HDD is active, but HDD7 is the boot drive, can I just delete all the files off of HDD -- and then will the computer still properly boot with the boot files on HDD7? I already removed XP from the boot manager list, so that won't be a problem.

A:Delete XP Files, keep Boot Files

Graham -

Not recommended. Take the steps to do it right to avoid future problems.

Follow this closely: Partition : Recover Space Used by an Older OS

You will have to add a first step using Partition Wizard CD to rightclick Win7 partition to Modify>Convert to Primary, OK, so you can proceed to Step One to Modify>Set to Active.

Pay special attention to Step One explanation on marking Win7 partition active, so that after the Partition Wizard CD steps are completed you remember to boot the Win7 DVD or Repair CD to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times to write the System boot files to Win7.

Backup your files and a Win7 backup image so you can start over if necessary.

I have a user (2kpro) in a roaming profiles environment (win2k,2k3) that can put files in the trash. They don't appear in the recycling bin, but when he logs out and back in, the 'deleted' files have reappeared on his desktop. Any thoughts? I have checked permissions on his profile's folder, the the local recycle folder. I'm going to back and check on the network share that contains all the profiles soon.

A:Can't Delete Files a.k.a The Lazerith Files

Can you be more specific about the GINA around your roaming profiles?

in many cases, blowing away the windows setting directory in the profile has fixed similar issues for me, but that was with a highly tailored gina that we knew exactly which files to blow away and let the profile recreate.

You also need to note that deleted files from a drive go to the recycler file ON THAT DRIVE. That is, if the account is stored on E, the desktop directory is on E, and the local machine is C, be sure that he has access to the recycle bin file(s) on the E drive.

Hope this helps, or inspires...

Is there a way to delete all OS files on my old hard drive that I am using as additional storage but keep my personal files? Possibly a windows format? I can transfer the saved data to my main hard drive til I make this happen.

Any Thoughts?

A:Delete OS Files but Keep Personal Files

Easiest way is to do what you say, transfer your files to a different drive, temporarily, and then just reformat the old drive. That will "erase" everything. You can then copy the user data back to the old drive.

Otherwise you will have to manually delete each folder/file.

I've come across this a few times, strangley enough mostly w/ video files. I try and delete the file and it gives me the "cannot be deleted becuase the file is in use" message. How do you get rid of these files when you come across this problem. I've tried safe mode, and I'm almost 100% positive that there isn't a program that should be using the video file somewhere in the background.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I was reading in an article that I was allowed to delete the files in these folders without harming my computer. The article said everything should work well as long as you don't delete the folders, just the files and as a result you'd save 1GB of space.

Before I do, I want to get some opinions from you guys. Will deleting any of the files in these folders harm my computer?

I recently bought a Windows 7 platform laptop. When I download files from a certain website, Axis and Allies Member Club (AAMC), they come in as xxx.aam or files. For some reason I am getting not only the actual file but a duplicate file with 0KB space. I don't know why this is occurring and if it is the website or Windows 7 but it did not happen when I used my old XP platform laptop. When I try to delete the duplicate file with 0KB space I get a "file not found" message.

I tried using Unlocker to delete the files but it is not available for Windows 7 yet. Does anyone know of a freeware program that can delete these files on Windows 7? The simpler the process to delete them the better since I have a lot of these files and it will continue to grow unless something changes.

Thank you...

Download this scan for malware and then install (double click on the file named InstallOwnership.reg). Now you will have on your right click menu a take ownership selection. Right click on the file you want to delete and select Take ownership and then delete, problem solved (we hope).

I tried to test it myself, but I got the message "Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD." You apparently have to have a CD that matches the service pack installed on the sytem. (i.e. if you have Windows XP Service Pack 3, you need a Windows XP Service Pack 3 install CD.)

Some exes I can delete, but most I can't. I downloaded the program "unlocker" that unlocks and deletes the file and it works. It says the program I am trying to delete is being used by explorer.exe. What is wrong? I can use unlocker to delete the files, but I would like to have my computer do what it is supposed to do when I hit the delete key.

Hi chickenboy and welcome to TSF !

What kind of .exe files are those files ? Self-extracting archives, programs setup files, ... ?

Are you logged as an admin ?

You can check whether the file is still in use by using the task manager : press ctrl+alt+del and go to the processes tab. If the .exe file is still there then select it and click end task. You should then be able to delete it properly.

You can try using a program like CCleaner to get rid of old keys and programs and see if that works. Get it here.
If not you might have a malware issue, to be sure do the following:
Go to the malware forum on our site. You do this by first going here, to read how to post and where, what and when.
Then follow the post link to post to our virus forum.
Please wait, do not do anything to your computer unless a forum, Malware expert, or Moderator tells you too.
They will make sure your computer has no virus, malware on it, and help you secure your computer.
Only work with one person at a time, DO NOT go to different sites and get help there too.

Good luck and please stick with the antivirus experts, they help a lot of people, and it can take a few days to get to you, but they are as good as it gets.

Fire your cab driver.
The first step is to get rid of the 'big ticket' items - the files that take up a lot of space. These can come from anywhere in the \Winnt folder - do a search on *.* and sort by size. Some of these you may want, but likely candidates include (51Mb), the .zip files in \Winnt\Java\Packages, and Webfldrs.msi. If you are optimising Windows 2000 Server, you could also try weeding out Adminpak.msi. From:

try checking what is inside these folders, perhaps you have some hidden files like desktop.ini or thumbs.db inside .. also possible that you are using a program that thinks these folders are supposed to exist .. so open up the program you were using to make your scans and save somewhere else, even delete the folders from within the program. I know it sounds wierd but I have had similar problems, not being allowed to delete folders because another program I had been using shortly before had still got a reference to the folder inside it. A bit more info on these files would be good - specifically what folder they're in and the file names.

Also, you said you can't move the files, but can you copy them? If so, can you look at the properties of these new files, and can you delete them?

It's also possible these files are being locked by some form of malware on your machine. Do you have any adware scanners on your machine, and if so when did you last do a scan with them? Finally, what anti-virus software are you currently running?

I'm helping a friend clean up a virus infection on his computer, and after the first MBAM scan I realized that there is 10GB in a backup directory on this computer that is being scanned unnecessarily. The backup is almost 3 years old so I asked permission to delete it. I did not expect the plethora of problems that arised to occur.

One of the files I could not delete was the result of a disk error. I fixed this with the dskchk utility and restarted but there are still a few files that I cannot delete because of an error:

I'm posting this in the hope that someone might be able to shed some light on this. i have just formatted and reinstalled XP on a partition (c:). There is another partition on the drive (d:) which has not been touched. D: contains the temporary internet files from the old install. I cannot delete these files, either by using windows, DOS, a linux live CD or when the disk is in a usb enclosure on another machine! I'd rather not format this partition, but I don't just want to leave them there. Anyone got any hints or ideas?

A:Cannot delete files!!

I must ask why you would keep temporary internet files in the first place, this is a breeding area for malware and viruses.
And why would you keep them on a partition and then chose to delete them after a install on a seperate partiton.
Why don't you want to format the partition if all that is on there is temp internet files?

What is the error you are receiving when you try to delete these files?

A:Cannot delete files ...

Hi zero97537,

Have you tried running Disk Cleanup to see if it removes them? It will usually have some kind of option to clean left over installation files.

If not, try taking ownship of the files first, then see if you are able to delete them.

Take Ownership of file

Hope this helps you,

If I try to delete them an error message "Could not find this item" would show up.
If I right click the files, it would say in their properties that the size is 0 bytes but in detailed view of the folder, they have sizes in KB. How do I delete them?

Hi everyone,
I have a 40gb C drive (which is full) and a 120gb D drive. My computer is running very slow.

I know I need to get alot of files off the C drive, but I don't know which ones are safe to get rid of.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:What files to delete?

DownLoad EasyCleaner

Use the clear files and Unnecessary files buttons I do not recommend
using the Duplicates files button as many dupes are there on purpose.

Not all files will delete that is normal.

In the unnecessary button I check the top 4 entries

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will be assisting you with your Malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. Do not run any other scans without instruction or Add/ Remove Software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. I've just noticed that Mozy Back-up is saving old OE .dbx files when it does a back-up. I use Thunderbird now and all of the dbx files are 1-3 years old. Emails and settings were imported when got the new laptop and started using Tbird with Win 7, and I still actually have my old &quot;need to save&quot; emails sitting in OE on my old XP computer. <br />
<br />
Is there any reason to keep these files on my no OE Win7 computer? If not, can I just delete them, or is there some uninstall procedure I would follow?<br />
<br />
TIA for any assistance.<br />
Hi. I searched high and low, this forum and the web, and I can't find this one.
Background - this is a new machine - about 1 month old. Windows 7. 3 Gig, etc.
Email client is Windows Live Mail. I like it and Windows 7 a lot.

The current problem is that I cannot delete saved .eml files.
A delete, with the key or the right click, or whatever - does NOTHING.
No response.

I have discovered that if I open properties on the file, and select "details" and select remove properties and personal information, and then select the "remove the following properties button", and then hit OK, and OK, then I can delete it!

This is somewhat painful.
The good thing is that I can do it for a whole range of files, so it is not a killer.
I tend to save emails that deal with controversial issues, so I can resend them to someone, if need be.

The other insight is that this was not the case initially. Initially, all of these same, saved emails were having their dates updated every time I opened Windows Live Mail. Then SyncToy would recopy them, endlessly. That problem was mysteriously fixed, and then this one showed up - about 4 weeks ago.

And . . . does anyone actually read these things?

A:Cannot delete .eml files

Starting from the bottom of your post: Yes, some insomniacs like me (it's 3am here!).

I do not have an answer to your original question. Instead, let me ask you one: If reason to save your emails as eml-files is to be able to resend / forward these messages, you are doing extra job for nothing. Why don't you just leave the messages in your Inbox or other mail folders, create as many archive folders you want and need and keep your mails sorted and archived inside Windows Live Mail? Then choose forward when you want to send a message to somebody else?

A few months ago I got a new laptop (HP, Windows 7 64-bit). It has a much bigger hard drive than my old laptop, so I moved a bunch of files I was keeping on an external HD on the laptop's c: drive. Including some mp3 files.

I noticed the problem when I tried to load these mp3s into my mp3 player (MediaMonkey). There were tons of listings in my library that were garbage notation, full of semicolons and numbers and system characters. These files wouldn't play, and if you tried to perform any action on them they'd essentially crash the program. If you waited a loooooong time, sometimes it would manage to ignore your action and just play the next playlist song, or whatever. After a lot of investigating, it turns out some of the files that came over from my external HD are somehow corrupted: while the physical filename is fine, the metadata (title, artist, album) is now full of all the garbage-y information.

I'm guessing now that the problem is at some point I converted my external HD from Fat32 to NTFS; I'm half-guessing that that led to the metadata corruption.

Here's the thing: I cannot delete these files or modify their metadata, either through MediaMonkey or file properties. I've tried everything I know:
- Right-click delete
- Delete key
- Drag to recycle bin
- From cmd prompt "del song.mp3"
- Starting in safe mode and deleting

Most of these actions just cause the system to hang, resulting in Explorer eventually restarting. From Safe Mode, I can beg... Read more

A:Please help me delete these files

And I also tried creating a file in a separate directory with the same filename, then copying and pasting into the same directory as the corrupt file, hoping it would straight up overwrite it. Didn't work, explorer hangs. Maybe it was a stupid idea.
