Windows Live Messenger Error 80040154

Q: Windows Live Messenger Error 80040154

Ever since I got this new laptop, I couldn't log on to Windows Live Messenger. An error pops up saying "Signing in to Windows Live Messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later. Error code: 80040154"

Any suggestions?

Boy if anyone can figure it out I would be grateful. When I was signing into MSN live messenger I got a message failed because the service is temp unavailble. I looked on msn and did a clean uninstall then did a reinstall from download on msn live. It still did not work and I got the same message. I also tried several other things I run: MSXM13.msi did not work. I tried %windr%system32\regsvr with all the dll for every file that was listed on internet pertaining to this error and nothing works. I can get into my mail account with no problem just can't get into messenger live. I am using XP Pro on inspiron 9200 notebook. This program worked before.
After much work and time I found a way to get on the windows live messenger. I opened my Hotmail account and then clicked on messenger low and behold it said available I was able to open it by selecting a name of an available person and I was on.
I am going to try all the stuff but I think it will work this way. For some strange reason it will not sign in directly to windows live messenger from my computer without going to hotmail first. But I still can't video from this site and that is what I want to do. Bummer I thought I found it.

Hello Welcome to SF,

I have seen this error before users have tried lot of steps finally gave up. I guess the best option would be to use Digsby or Trillian which will login to the Windows Live Server and retrive your Contact list. Its really good alternative.

Good Luck,

I am currently using windows 7. I have tried to sign in to Windows live messenger and a window constantly pops up. The window says "We can't sign you in to Windows live messenger. Signing in to Windows live messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later. Error code 80040154." I have clicked "retry" many times and even restarted my computer. The error still pops up and I can't sign in. I can only sign in on the website. I really want to sign in on the automatic Windows live messenger that came with the windows live essentials download, but it just won't let me. I don't know if using a belkin wireless internet adapter has anything to do with it. ANY suggestions?

Hello, All. I apologize if there's any lack of information.

I am having difficulties with Windows Live Messenger (Latest, updated version. 14.0.8089.0726, I believe.) with the "80040154" error. The error goes along the lines of "Service temporarily unavailable, please contact your.." the usual stuff.

I'm on an Asus K50IJ notebook running Windows 7 home Premium 64 bit. This problem came up quite randomly. I connected to the internet several days ago, opened WLM, and noticed a strange delay in it opening. Finally, it did. Afterward, it had not saved my username and password as it always did. When I went to type this is, it took around 3 minutes for the letters to appear.

I thought this was strange but went with it, and, upon logging in, it would instantly open the error. I've tried numerous things and nothing has worked so far. I've been using pidgin in the mean time but really would rather get WLM back up and running.

Yes, I've run all tests mentioned in the "Read before posting" section multiple times since this started, AntiVirus, multiple spyware programs, and anti malware. No results found.

I've gone through windows solutions which did not work. The fixes were first to reregister MSXML3.dll by using "REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\msxml3.dll" in the command prompt. It succeeded, I restarted the computer, and tried again. No solution. Though, they did not specify anything different for Windows 7.

Any help would be apprec... Read more

You need to re-register msxml3.dll. Just follow the steps below.

Windows XP: Start --> Run

Type this in Run: REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\msxml3.dll

If "DllRegisterServer succeeded in C:\Windows\System32\msxml3.dll is succeeded." appears go to STEP 2

If the message does not appear you have to install the file msxml3.dll. It can be downloaded here..

Now, Restart your computer and log in with Messenger, If following the errors appear:
80072ee7
80048820
8004840a

- Make sure that internet works correctly. Try to open some websites and surf them.
- If the error goes on, delete the cache DNS entries.

Windows XP: Start --> Run

Write:
ipconfig /flushdns

If the error goes on, just control your firewall and then try to log in with Messenger

Hi
I had Windows Live Messenger and I had installed the new beta version that came out 9.0 and I tested it out but I wasn't pleased with some of the functions it had so I tried unistalling it but for some reason it does not show in my Add//Remove Program so I went through my registry and hit Ctrl+F and I deleted everything that had Windows Live name because I wanted to install an older version of Windows Live (8.5) and it would not let me until I unistalled the newest. Anyways after I finished, it would let me now install the "Windows Live Installer" (the first process to install the messenger) and when I installed it I clicked on the link where it says "Start Messenger" which it would not do anything so I installed a really older version of messenger (5.1) and had a friend send me the 8.5 version, messenger.exe. So when I clicked it, it gave me an error that I did not have the msncore.dll so I downloaded the dll and sent it to the system folder and now when I click on the exe it throws me this error that I can't seem to find a solution. If anyone could help me out with it:

msnmsgr.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point [email protected]@@[email protected]@[email protected]@@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library MSNcore.dll

Thanks
PS I tried installing 9.0 beta again and it won't let me either. Im currently on crappy 5.1.

Found this:It?s not that difficult to remove the pesky little pile-on of a software: MSN Messenger!Let us keep it simple. First, make sure you have exited MSN messenger and unsinstalled any MSN Messenger related entry from Control Panel (START ? > CONTROL PANEL ? > ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS).Then, START ? > RUN the following command:RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.RemoveDone. That should remove it. If it doesn?t, check some more round-about and cumbersome ways from Microsoft that involve the Windows registry.http://support.microsoft.com/?id=302089

Ive recently started getting the error message 8000401a on Windows Lives Messenger 2009 as soon as I try to login- it says the service is temporarily unavailable. Ive tried repairing it through the change/remove function within the control panel, Ive tried uninstalling deleting all temp folders, cache and registry entry and redownloading it but no joy, and this error comes up with both of my email addresses as the login.

I had a virus on my comp earlier which AVAST took care of, and I have downloaded some new anti-malware packages today, but theyre not blocking it I dont think as even when I turn off any live protection I still get the error message. Windows live does not list this error in their support area and google searches present no solutions.

Any ideas why and what I can do to be aboe to login??

I forgot to add that Ive checked I def dont have a virus or malware (ran so many different scans today!), plus when you google it lots of people seem to be getting it and asking for a solution but there doesnt seem to be a conclusive answer

Hey people,

I am curious as to why when I run technical support on Windows Live Messenger it says straight away, - Error You Appear To Have An Invalid IP Address.

How can I possibly have an invalid IP adress, I just got this PC :S

A:Windows Live Messenger Error -> Invalid IP

Exit Messenger and try this:

Download and run this file: Remove Messenger Settings.

or do it yourself (advanced)...

1. Go to Start > Run
2. Type in regedit and press enter
3. Navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger"
4. Delete the folder called MSNMessenger

After this Windows Live Messenger should login as normal.

Hello there,

I had a problem signing in into WLM. Every time I sign in into the current version of Windows Live Messenger, I stay in for a few seconds and then there is an error message after which Windows Live Messenger shuts down. I use XP.
The error message is as follows:

"Windows Live Communications Platform has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

The error details are the following:

AppName: wlcomm.exe
ModName: kernel32.dll
AppVer: 14.0.8098.930
Modver: 5.1.2600.5781
offset: 00009eda

I tried to look up the file kernel32.dll and it seems to be legitimate. Is this a spyware/malware problem or is it something else?

Please advise.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

A few months back, I downloaded WLM9 and could sign in for a few minutes, but then I'd receive a "platform error" message. I tried solving the problem using the "official website" but couldn't, and so went back to using 8.5.

I downloaded it again a while later, thinking the problem may have been due to it being in the beta stages. I couldn't sign in. Then this weekend I had to upgrade, and the error is still there. It says that the "service is temporarily unavailable" but doesn't even attempt to sign in. The error code is 800702e4.

I've searched online and found no useful information, other than it's happened to other people who tried to solve the "platform error" issue! The time/date is correct, I've clicked "allow" on my firewall (I use Norton 360 - apparently this may have been causing problems in the first place), I've even tried disabling the anti-virus/firewall... the only thing that seemed to help a bit was something to do with "msconfig" I think - I disabled something like "____ UAC" and it attempted to sign in (I didn't bother letting it finish - assumed it was matterless if it worked in this way since I needed to enable the "UAC" thing again). When I did enable it again, the error was back.

I also have problems getting onto my inbox. I have to uncheck the "Check for server certificate revocation" button on Internet Explore... Read more

About 3 hours ago I installed the new Beta,
It didn't quite work, it was constantly kicking me off,
So I decided, eh, I'll go back to the old Messenger before it.

Well, Unfortunately, Me, and my Tard fashion, Decided to go into program files and just remove the folder, and emptying my recycle bin afterwards.

Of course, Now I can't install the older Messenger, or the new one.
During the install of the old one, I get this:

Well, Damn.
Then I discovered I didn't have Service pack 3 installed, thought that may have been the problem for Beta, and I installed SP3 and reinstalled Beta,
And now I get this...

I've googled up what I could, and I've found nothing to actually help me,
So I come to you,

What can I do?

Also, System restore Is disabled :/

Hi,
I am currently receiving the error message 80040005 whenever I try to sign into WLM. I get this error without msn even attempting to sign in.
I have tried deleting the contacts folder with no luck. I am able to sign in via hotmail, so it's not a problem with my account. I run it as administrator. I tried to run in safe mode with networking but it wouldn't allow me to connect to the internet, and I get the same problem when I try to just load basic services. I have the latest version of msn, and have installed all the updates that I can. I have no viruses or malware.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

Hi,

First time posting here, so apologies if i don't make the most amount of sense. Since Sunday, i've been having various problems with my PC. I was downloading a newer version of Yahoo Messenger, it failed, my PC rebooted, and since then, i've not been able to get into my Windows Live Messenger. When i enter my login details, i get an error message, advising it cannot open Messenger, and will have to close down. When i click on view error report details, i see the info below :

AppName: msnmsgr.exe AppVer: 14.0.8064.206 AppStamp:498cf586
ModName: msvcrt.dll ModVer: 7.0.2600.5512 ModStamp:4802a188

Record: 0x0000000000000000 Address: 0x0000000077c47740

I uninstalled Yahoo messenger from my PC, and this error persisted. I was also having problems opening Internet Explorer, but once i disabled the Yahoo add ons, i was able to access it.

As part of my initial investigations, i ran a scan for Malware viruses. It found 19 infected files, but when i told it to remove them, i got a similar error to the one i get when trying to login to Messenger, with the same Exception Information as above. I rebooted in safe mode, and was able to remove the errors. But when i try to run the tool in normal mode, it finds one infected file, but gives the error when i try to remove it. It also gives the same error when i try to update the database in the tool.

WLM worked flawlessly an hour ago but when I got back to the computer my messages weren't going through so I tried to sign out and back in again but I got error code 80072745. When I used troubleshoot, everything has a check except for wireless. I can use the internet fine, it's just wlm that's having internet issues. I've tried resetting my modem, router, rebooting, going into CMD and typing in "ipconfig /release" and "ipconfig /renew". Also, the only firewall I have is the default one and I haven't had any issues with it. Any tips?

Okay.. The error changed to 81000314 and I had to re-register the .dll files. It's working now.

I have had this really irritating error come about in the last week where I can't sign in to messenger. Error 81000306 indicates that the problem could be caused by a firewall, proxy settings, DNS cache. I followed all Microsoft's instructions but to no avail and I have ALLOWED msnmsgr.exe in ZoneAlarm, so the lack of info they're giving me is getting on my nerves. I even uninstalled, ran Registry cleaner and reinstalled but still nothing. Can anyone help?

This error first appeared after another error caused me to reboot (activex disabled itself (still unresolved)) & when I rebooted WLM had lost my sign in details. When I tried to fill them in WLM took 3-5 seconds to show up each letter & once I had it all in it came up with the 800401f3 error.

I have tried a few things to resolve the issue but have hit brick walls in the process.

1) Remove & Reinstall WLM - problem persists

2) Reinstall MSXML - problem persists (have MSXML3 Sp7, MSXML 4.0 & MSXML Parser 6.0)

3) Run Messenger Error Fixer and got the following Log:

Ive checked I def dont have a virus or malware (ran so many different scans today!), plus when you google it lots of people seem to be getting it and asking for a solution but there doesnt seem to be a conclusive answer

Any ideas why and what I can do to be aboe to login??

I've been having this problem for two days now. I've done practically everything in this page : http://www.google.com.my/search?hl=en&q=80072efd+live+messenger&btnG=Search&meta= but none seemed to work. the messenger did work once after I checked the "Automatically detect settings..." in LAN settings in Internet Explorer. But after that, the old problem came back again.

Here is a the problem:

1. It says,

We can't sign in to Windows Live Messenger

There might be a problem with your Internet connection. Make sure...bla bla...

2. I used the troubleshooter and when it reached Key Ports,

It says:

Failed to connect to the service. This could be due to improper proxy or firewall settings. Please review your proxy and firewall settings through Windows Live Messenger Options. For Firewall settings, please see the retailer's instructions.

Click on the repair..blabla.

3. So, I checked my firewall and Windows Live was allowed access so there was no prob with it. I also disabled my firewall but still got this error. So, I went into the Connections tab in windows Live options and I opened the troubleshooting log.

When I log into my account on WLM it keeps coming up with:

"We were unable to sign you in to Windows Live Messenger, possibly because of a problem with the service or with your Internet connection. Please make sure that you are connected to the Internet.

To let us try and troubleshoot the problem, click the Troubleshoot button.

Error code: 81000306"

I then proceed to press troubleshoot and it passes all tests up to Key Ports... and comes up with:

"Failed to connect to the service. This could be due to improper proxy and firewall settings. Please review your proxy and firewall setting. Proxy settings can be accessed through Windows Live Messenger Options. For Firewall settings, please see the retailer's instructions."

I have a Gateway Laptop Model: MT6839b with Windows Vista Home Premium on a wireless connection from a NETGEAR DG834PN router, and I have been using the service for a year and about 5 months on this Laptop with no problems.

Along with messenger not working any webpage to do with msn does not load and this problem has also spread to the home desktop that is on the same router.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling about 5 times and this hasn't worked.

If I could get some help ASAP I would be thankful.

P.S. I'm not that technical so answers as simple as possible please :haha:

About 2 weeks ago there was a new version of windows live messenger available.....I was running I think 8.1 and the 8.5 was available....I tried to download it.It worked but since I've done it,I can't connect anymore on live messenger.....they give me this error code 80072efd...

I checked on internet to find out what the code means and I had a list of things to do.....so I did them.

now they were telling on internet that I had to reinstall WLM on my computer witch I tried and did not work......still the same error code when I try to connect myself.I sent an e-mail to the live support.....they sent me back a answer with things to try.....I did try them but now it there that I have the problem.

wintrust.dll module has been found but the call to dll register service has failed with the error code 0x80070005.
What do I do to fix that???????

and the next one is the initpki.dll module.....they say on my computer that it cannot be found. So what do I do?????

Oh and by the way,I'm running vista home premium on a new hp laptop that I bought meself a few months ago

So can anyone help me please?????

I just started getting this error yesterday and after searching online and reading other threads, I'm still dumbfounded on what to do. Most people that posted this error message has a Sony Vaio, but I don't.

The exact message reads as:
msnmsgr.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the program.
This happens when I try to open the program, I removed it from start-up, uninstalled and reinstalled it. Still no luck. I hadn't downloaded anything prior to getting this error, it's something I generally run at all times. I only first got this error upon start up yesterday.

Messenger Version: 8.5
OS: Windows XP (Service Pack 2)

I ran Spyware Terminator (which includes a virus scan) and it found nothing but usual tracking cookies. Perhaps I should try something different? Let me know if there's more information I can provide. I'm not having issues with any other programs, just Windows Live Messenger.

I'm connected to a network which uses proxy and when i upgraded from Windows live messenger 2009 to 2011 it started giving me errors related to key ports. I've configured IE8 for proxy connection and the messenger as well.
I would like to add that when i try to sign-in through a network with direct connection the messenger works normally and when i go back to the proxy network, the messenger works but after 2 or 3 days it stops working and gives me the key ports error.
Any suggestions regarding the proxy configuration on the messenger and IE8 ?
Thanks in advance !

I have been struggling for several days trying to have Windows Live Messenger starting on my Sony laptop (VGN-FZ38M) with Vista sp2: In a first step, it started but stopped after few seconds. and then it didn't start at all, giving me the error 800702e4. I tried to stop the anti-virus (Avast), stop the firewall, decrease the security level of internet and always got the same error.
Then, looking at this forum, I discovered the answer from Mi68 (Nov 21, 2009), advising to deactivate the User account control (In control panel) since it solved the same issue for him: I confirm, this works perfectly!!
Hopefully, this bug (?) will be fixed in the 2010 version of Windows Live Messenger.

Thanks a lot to Mi68 and Tech Support Guy for this input that should be of great help for many people

Hi
Everytime I download Windows Live Messenger and try to sign in I get the error code: 80004005

I've tried uninstalling it and then reinstalling it and it still doesn't solve the problem. I also used the instructions that msn messenger provided to fix the error code problem, and that didn't work either. I've heard that many of my friends have been getting the same problem for no reason whatsoever, so I guess I'm not alone. But the weird thing is, my brother can sign into his messenger live account on the same computer, and so can my other brother..but my account just won't sign in(I really don't think I should get a new account though, cause my friend tried that and she still couldn't sign in). No matter how long I leave it installed, everytime I try to sign in the same error code shows up. When I use messenger 7.5, I can always log in with no problems.

Anyone else experiencing this problem? Anyone know how to fix it?

Thanks.

THIS HAS BEEN SOLVED! THANKS ANYWAY THOUGH.

My kids insist on having it though). http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/msnmsgr.exe.htmlYou know what bugs me the most about error messages? Hello experts,

I have ASUS Essentio mini-pc with Windows Vista Home Premium x64 installed.
I did run virus checker, spy checker, several registry cleaners.
I spent a week on it , as well Microsoft support logged in for an hour.
I did run the batch file re-registering DLL's.
The original error 80070424 is gone since I run the "ErrorFix" utility.

My recovery CD form the manufacturer is only to wipe out all what I have installed and reload the "vanilla" system. Windows repair option is not available.
This is for me out of question, to many programs are installed on my system.

Here is the problem I think:
Windows installer is missing,
Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable installation fails. error code 1603
"Windows update" does not work, error code: 80040154

Questions
1. Is there any way to restore the Windows Installer files ?
2. Upgrading to Windows Vista Ultimate version will fix the missing files ?

Any other suggestions?

TIA
Frank

Do you have AVG anti-virus? Disable the 'web shield' if you do ... then see if it works.

1. Open the AVG User Interface.
2. Double-click on the Web Shield component.
3. Switch on the Instant Messaging tab.
4. Uncheck the Instant Messaging protection option.
5. Confirm changes by clicking the Save Changes button

This is a slightly annoying problem. I've disabled Windows Live Messenger from starting up, both through Messenger's options and through MSCONFIG. The program doesn't start when Windows starts. But when I log on to Windows Live Mail through a web browser, Messenger starts up on it's own. I cannot figure out a way to disable this. I've looked through Live Mail options and can't find anything to denote starting up the program. I only use my Live Mail account for junk mail, but need to check it occasionally and would prefer it if Messenger didn't start up on it's own.

I find the assocation of windows live mail and messenger very annoying. In WL Mail, I use both my hotmail and gmail accounts. I prefer to save my passwords so I don't have to enter them every time I open my mail. However, if I get WL Mail to rememberr my passwords, my hotmail account automatically pops up first when I want to sign into WL Messenger, even though I never use hotmail in messenger (just the gmail sign-in). So now, I always have to change the sign-in information on messenger because somehow it prefers my hotmail account.
Simply clickinig 'forget me' in WL Messenger is not the solution since this also makes WL Mail forget my hotmail password, so I have to enter this one very time I open my mail.

So somehow I would like to dissociate the two, to have WL Mail to remember my passwords, but WL Messenger to forget the hotmail account. Does anyone know if there's any way to do so? I hate these automatic associations that you don't have any control over!

Somehow it hanged again when fixing 1/2 way, so I end task it. Then I realised that now not only I will hanged when I try to log in, my IE 7.0 also have the problem of not being able to access a webpage at all.

I tried to do a Ping to a website, but it returns me this:

What's with the [?] ? Shouldn't it shows the IP instead? I thought there was a error with the hosts file in C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc. So I did a comparison of the files with those from a working com. They were exactly the same, but i had an additional hosts.isa file.

Even though IE and WLM don't work, but I still can access the website using Mozilla Firefox. So i believe that there's a shared configuration file for WLM and IE, that's corrupted or something, else Firefox won't work.

Anyone out there kind enough to help? Kind of urgent.

Ive received this error while trying to log into my windows live messenger. It happened 'all of a sudden' and nothing 'problematic' led up to this event. I followed the instructions for the link that was given with the error message -- and verified that I DO have msxml3.dll. I downloaded zap messenger, and got rid of live messenger. Re installed it. Same message. Downloaded msxml3.dll and same thing all over again.

After much searching and trying just about everything i finally fixed the MSN Messenger Error 80072745 login issue by doing the following:
On the netgear router there is a setting to enable IM .... even though i had this set to enable i believe the router data file may have been corrupted. I enabled the following services inbound..... 443, 7001, 9 and 1683 and saved the settings. Then i applied the IM enable setting again. This then allowed me to login to MSN. i then removed the ports in services which disconnected me from MSN then reapplied the IM setting again.... bingo it all works..... I am not sure but i feel there may be a configuration save issue with the netgear router or the configuration can become corrupted for whatever reason.
