[SOLVED] changed one thing to open with a different application and it changed everyt

Q: [SOLVED] changed one thing to open with a different application and it changed everyt

this is very confusing to me ive never seen it so i found a way back onto the internet by using a shortcut i had.

not even sure how to start this. i dont know exactly what i did but everything was changed. i was going to try to watch a movie thats on my laptop, it said 'avi' and when i clicked on it nothing happened. i dragged it into itunes to see if it would play there, nope. i right-clicked it, picked 'open with' VLC, still nothing. right clicked it again and chose windows media center, nothing happened. i tried transfering the folder with the option available in media center, still didnt play.

when i closed media center i saw all my desktop stuff was changed to open with media center, i knew immediatly i screwed up pretty bad somewhere. i right clicked internet explorer and changed it to open with internet explorer, it then changed everything to open with internet explorer. when i clicked on internet explorer it didnt open, but it did open the download bar as if i downloaded it. it says "Internet Explorer.Ink" or .lnk. when i click open, the window comes up but closes right away.

can someone help me by telling me how to get everything back to normal?

A: [SOLVED] changed one thing to open with a different application and it changed everyt

It sounds like what you've done is associate a .lnk file (shortcut type) with an application and now all shortcuts will run with that application. The avi file you were referring too may be just that as well: a shortcut.

This has also been known to be caused by a malware infection, in which case if you suspect it, you'll have to report it to our security team in the appropriate Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help subforum.

This may help with the situation.

Hi all-
Apologies in advance as I am not exactly technologically sound.
I tried plugging in my digital camera today, and though it did not come up, I hunted down the Removable Disk (E) drive, which I figured would open it. It told me that I had to choose a program to open it with, so I chose some kind of picture viewer. Then all the icons on my desktop turned into said picture viewer, and I cannot open anything but that program from the desktop. Also, when I go into Programs and try to open them, they don't work there either. Help!
I am using Windows 7. I have tried System Restore but it told me that it could not complete it and gave me some kind of error message with 0x80070005. It recommended that I turn off my protection or whatever to complete it, but I have Norton 360 and no idea how to turn it off!
Any help is greatly appreciated- we just bought this computer in November and now my husband is ticked off!

A:Solved: accidentally changed removable disk, now changed every program?

Welcome Tuckersmom !
When I connect my camera to either of our computers, the camera itself indicates on the viewer how to handle the pictures....
To replace the icons on the desk top, right click any empty place and select refresh, I think this should restore them for you.
My daughter uses Norton 360 and we have found that it disables the system restore. She does regular backups with Norton 360. If you have done that, you should be able to restore from one of those backups.
Let us know how it goes.

I don't remember what I did, but I think it was related to removing cookies. It used to be when I made entries in a Google search the entries went into memory. Searching for similar items would recall earlier search terms starting with the same letters. Now after my change, there is no recall function. Any suggestions what to change back?

Just installed W7 x64 Enterprise.

I have pro installed on a couple of other machines, and something I quite like is when you drag the explorer icon on the taskbar and it shows a bunch of shortcuts related to explorer.

After I installed explorer this was operating correctly, and I could choose where I wanted explorer to open by using this function, which was really helpful for me.

I've modified my settings a bit since install - stuff like 'open folders in separate process' etc, nothing hacky.

I've just gone to do the drag thing and it's just giving me the basic options (Explorer, unpin, and close).

This happened after my last install on this machine (which was w7 pro).

Is there a system option that I have adjusted that has caused this function to be disabled?

I really liked this function, can anyone help me get it back?

A:What have I changed with explorer taskbar drag thing?

Hello Curt,

That sounds like you are referring to Jump Lists. If so, double check to make sure that you have Recent Programs and Recent Items turned on for it to work.

Hope this helps,

First, run Firefox in safe mode.

Hello all, my name is Chris Lewis and I found this site through google. I seem to have the same problem at least one of your members has already had.

Is pretty much the same problem that i am having. none of my exes will open and all my shortcuts got change to .lnk and don't work. my friend was using my computer when this happened, lol, but i think it has something to do with spyware and adaware messing up or something.

It seems that in the previous post JSntgRvr fixed their problem, but i'm having trouble fallowing it. I was wondering if you guys could post some kind of step by step fix.

thanks for the time

Hello, my name is Brandon. I'm new to this forum. I'm having the exact same problems as another member named Chris. I tried to follow the instructions layed out in that thread but have encountered some problems. I believe that I've removed all the viruses from my computer but all of my shortcuts are still showing lnk extensions. I was able to run a full scan using adware plus.

The next step on the thread says to download the EXEFIX08.reg file and add it to the registry.

1). How do I "Rename the extension from TXT to REG and double click to add it to the registry"? I've tried but have been unsuccessful. When I download the file, it opens either as an html document or in wordpad. I'm not sure how to rename an extension in wordpad. Can you please explain how I can do this?

Also, I would appreciate some more clarification on this statement "Before doing this, run Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View Tab and ensure that Hide Extensions of know file types is UNselected."

I can't figure out how to change it all back.

Turned on my comupter this morning and got the following errors: I have not opened the computer tower, I have not added or removed any drives:

Primary IDE channel NO 80 Conductor cable installed
Flopply Disk 40 missing

Then restarted system and got this message:
"cpu has been changed or CPU Ratio change failed"

Hit F1 to continue or DEL go to into setup

I have gone to CMOS set up and used f7 to optimize and hit f10 to save
come back with the third error.

this computer has always done a memory test when it starts up 99% of the time I let it run, total startup time if I do, 10minutes, if I skip memory test still 10 minutes.

Now slower than ever trying to start up

I have read your various threads and none I found discuss these errors just suddenly apprearing. This computer was a built from scratch by an IT friend of mine who has moved away I have all the documentation that came with it.

I have tried system restore back one week did not work, I was following ASK tech page guide and downloaded REGSERVO program came back with 6800 errors and wanted 39.00, well as you know the economy is in the tank and I do not have the extra money, but i do have the extra time if someone could walk me through what to do.

I use Norton utilities and clean the drive/registries/and explorer weekly.
Please send any advise possible
Thank you

A:sudden error message CPU has been changed or CPU Ratio changed failed

REGSERVO is a Rogue program that tells you, you have problems and "we will fix them for you for $39.00!" "But. Wait! for an extra amount for shipping and handling we will really screw your Windows installation up!"

Of course they make you wait until they find the registry errors to tell you that you have to pay $39.00. I just did a google search on REGSERVO and the only ones that give RegServo good reviews are, and hear is the drum roll, Regservo itself. Stay away from any of these programs that say they will fix your registry then want money to fix the problems they found.

Also there is no need to run any registry cleaner. More often than not it will not help your problem or speed up your computer, and can indeed break your registry to the extent of having to reinstall windows.

If this is the system in yur Computer specs, have you been having any problems with needing to adjust the date and time lately?

When changing the properties for cmd, i accidentally changed it to full screen which for some reason made windows crash and i had to reset my computer. After this when i try to run any cmd based application, it doesn't show up as a task that i can use. I see it in processes but not in tasks in task manager. I have no way to access it while its running and i did before this happened. I did find a way to run cmd and get to its properties BUT the option for windowed or full screen is not there at all. So i cant change it back.

Running 7 home premium 32bit.

If anyone has any ideas please let me know because i need to get it working agian

Also, if i just run cmd from the start menu it doesnt show.

Okay. I found that if i create a desktop short cut for cmd.exe or a bat file and run the short cut then they work. But running them from their original file they don't work. No idea what's going off.

System restart did not fix this.

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on Dell XPS 15 L502x Notebook.

Today morning when i switched on my laptop, I found some of the Icon changed to unknown icon.(See Attachements)

I searched google i found somewhere a question was posted with same problem. The solution was given as to change the destination of the target exe file. I performed it by renaming the folder in which the exe file is present. I found that the icon changed back to original icons from unknown-icon.

Also when i right click and select properties of those exe files, the original icon of the application appears there, but not in explorer / desktop / taskbar.

I am posting this question here to troubleshoot my problem.
Dont ask me to reinstall all applications and software. I have already done it and but the icon remains as Unknown until i change its destination from its original destination. Even avast icon changed to unknown.(see image) But i cant change its destination to check for its reappearance because it is always open when i start system.

Why this destination(Target path) of the exe file affect the original icon of the application.

Hi. I am new here and probably rate about "technologically challenged" so apologies in advance if I've put this in the wrong forum, or the answers are elsewhere on site. I have tried searching, but without luck.
In brief, yesterday when I booted up my computer I got a message pop up from Symantec (I run endpoint)
"Application has changed since the last time you opened it, process id: 5852"
today the same thing but a different end number:
"Application has changed since the last time you opened it, process id: 2348"
I'm not aware of having done anything that would have caused any change. Is this message indicative of something I should be alarmed about.
Many thanks for your time and thought

A:Query re Symantec "Application changed" Notice.

Process ID is just a number that Windows gives to various applications as they start.
Unfortunately, nobody can tell you what 5852 or 2348 or any such number might mean. They are volatile. They belong to one session. On your computer. Next day they're all different numbers.
Watch the Symantec alert some more. If they're any good, they should tell you what the application is they see a change in. When you catch the entire alert, or extract it from the logs, post back.

Viruses can change applications.
So can you changing some program.
So can Windows updates where the vital Windows applications change as they patch the system.

(using win7 x64)

I used a program called "Types" to change a few file icons in windows. I did the same thing on a laptop but used a different program so I didn't get this problem. After I changed the default icon for .exe every exe program changed to the default icon I had selected. Not just the programs I already had on the computer but it uses the default icon for new programs downloaded and even ones viewed on disc. And it changed all shortcuts to the default icon.

I've been able to restore most of the shortcuts through the properties menu. Interesting thing is I have to do it twice on every icon since the first attempt seems to do nothing (and refreshing the desktop doesn't work).

I've downloaded additional icon programs that have a restore setting but that hasn't worked. I've tried a registry fix but that doesn't work. Neither has using the windows restore point. I've gone into the registry itself and changed around the default icon for the exe. Sure it'll change the icon but no exe programs with their own icons will return to their original state. My last attempt has been to delete the icon cache and that has also failed.

So now that google has let me down I'm hoping someone here can help me. A big thank you in advance cause this is really annoying.

Need a little help here. I've gotten a text from a friend saying that all her files open with Internet Explorer. After having her explain it to me a little more, it seems she changed all shortcuts to open with IE. Anyway she can revert back? She tells me even clicking "System Restore" opens IE.

Here is a snapshot.

Please note that I'm not at her place, only getting text messages. Any help appreciated.

Getting quite desperate for help now as i do not have my XP cd to reinstall and my System Restore doesnt get rid of the .lnk files! Basically i booted my pc this morning and an error message came up for ALL of my programs stating:

'Windows cannot open this file'....To open this file, Windows needs to know which program created it.......Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from a list of programs on your computer....What do you want to do?'

Ive tried start, run, and various prompts suggested on other forums and it gives the same message WHATEVER i type in here! I can still access the net but thats about all.

Any help much appreciated since i cant do system restore or reintstall.

Thanks Nicky

Didn't know where to put this posting so I put it here.
I have made a huge mistake, on trying to open a .exe file type I foolishly decided to try and open it with another program and forgot to uncheck the box for doing this on every occasion. I am not stuck with every .exe program opening as IE.
I would try an do a system restore back to last week however the program to do that is a .exe and so cannot be opened. I was wondering if there was any way i could get it to open as normal.

I don't know what happened, but a few days ago I discovered that the OPEN command in Windows Explorer has changed his order. When I double clicked C:/ or D:/ partitions doesn't enter anymore, remain still in My Computer and my CDROM start to spin. When I right clicked, in the opened cassette says that OPEN command has moved in the third position, after AUTO (first option), SEARCH... (second option) and in front of EXPLORE command.
Is very frustrating to right click every time and select the third option (OPEN) to enter a partition. What should I do to restore the default state and to open normally when I double click a partition???

I've been working for 2 days now trying to fix this problem, but it has been a very resilient trojan (or group of them). I think I have the problem files isolated but I can't figure out how to remove them. The userinit value has been changed, and I can't modify it in Regedit. I've read some other materials suggesting the use of ComboFix, but the program (along with Spybot S&D, Malwarebytes, and SuperAntiSpyware) won't load after I double-click them on my desktop. AVG and Avira do load for some reason and I've completed scans with both of them. Sdra64.exe and lowsec.exe are my main concerns. I share a computer with my mom, and a couple of days ago she got a couple of trojans. It was no problem, I got rid of them with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Everything was fine...then today I turned the computer on and the desktop background was changed.

It's a big black box and says:

System has been stopped due to a serious malfunction.
Spyware activity has been detected.

It is recommended to use spyware removal tool to prevent loss.
Do not run any application before all spyware removed.

Something pops up and automatically starts scanning, I'm able to stop it. Everytime I restart, it happens again though.

Problem is I can't open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. When I try, it says:
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the approptiate permissions to access the item."
I tried in safe mode...says the same thing.

Please help.

Hey there...
I am certainly no kind of tech or all that computer saavy but I want to learn how to get rid of this nasty thing on my computer. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on an Acer Aspire One D255E. 2 processors, 2 gigs ram. Only using maybe a quarter of that in memory I believe. Using Windows Security Essentials and Windows Defender for Antivirus and Spyware. Okay, so I began noticing Desktop.ini icons in all kinds of my folder locations about 1 or 2 months ago and I couldn't find any resolution to this online. As this continued on, a notepad [ShellClassInfo.] msg. would then appear after loging on (both standard UA & Admin UA accounts). I ran full scans several times which all came back as clean!! I was stumped as to what the heck is this happening.
The next symptom then begins to show "Warning! Windows Defender is not turned on. Please press to turn on". I was unable to start it even from services.
Now I am seeing files missing and shortcuts changing with desktop.ini everywhere! I have since run Hijack this and saved log file but it doesn't help me so much. ClamWin Portable showed Win32.Virut.Gen.D after scan. Antimalware Bites did not detect anything?!
I have also searched the registry and found a few keystroke loggers! I haven't deleted them because I don't want to make matters worse by screwing with reg. keys. Please tell me how to kill this without having to reinstall  Windows all over again.

A:Win32.Virut.Gen.D has changed explorer files to .lnk, unable to open.

I'm afraid I have very bad news. Your system is infected with a nasty variant of Virut, a dangerous polymorphic file infector with IRCBot functionality which infects .exe, .scr files, and opens a back door that compromises your computer. Using this backdoor, a remote attacker can access and instruct the infected computer to download and execute more malicious files. -- Note: As with most malware infections, the threat name may be different depending on the anti-virus or anti-malware program which detected it. Each security vendor uses their own naming conventions to identify various types of malware.Understanding virus names Threat aliases for Win32.Win32.Virut Threat aliases for Win32.Virtob.Gen.12 With this particular infection, the safest solution and only sure way to remove it effectively is to reformat and reinstall the OS. Why? According to this Norman White Paper Assessment of W32/Virut, some variants can infect the HOSTS file and block access to security related web sites. Other variants of virut can even penetrate and infect .exe files within compressed files (.zip, .cab, rar). The Virux and Win32/Virut.17408 variants are an even more complex file infectors which can embed an iframe into the body of web-related files and infect script files (.php, .asp, .htm, .html, .xml). When Virut creates infected files, it also creates non-functional files that are corrupted beyond repair and in some instances can disable Windows File Protection. In many cases the infected... hello, I am beginning my task to discover why BSOD, mostly after using computer in sleep mode.
I read threads how to prepare dump file for upload, however, instructions I read advised:
"left click first dump file> hold shift key down & left click after last dump file (blue highlight these files)> select send to compressed (zipped) folder for upload w next post.
After crash I located a dump file (in Minidump folder).
>I had one file. I misunderstood thinking I was supposed to open the file and highlight the contents (for upload). I clicked the on the file to open it a got a message something to the effect of "Windows can't open this file."
At that point the instructions didn't seem to match, so regretfully I (stupidly) assigned "Notepad" to open the (.dmp) file.
Now I can't remove Notepad as default program associated with .dmp files (does that alter the file contents? can I compress the Notepad file and upload that?) anyway...
I really want to remove Notepad as default program that opens .dmp files, however, in order to remove Notepad as default you must select/provide a replacement program. I Googled all over and couldn't find what the original default value or program should be. Uncheck the box without changing the program and you find the box automatically returns to checked status.
Before the change clicking on this .dmp file generated a message something like "you can't open this file in windows" or something like that.

Welcome to the forum,

You should still be able to upload them, they are only associated with notepad on your machine.

Someone else can help with the unassociation.

The best method for uploading BSOD info is using this,

1. Download this file to your desktop or other convenient location,

2. Double click on the file to run it.

3. Locate the .ZIP file created on your desktop, and upload it here in your next reply.

Anyhow i believe that i changed the file to open with Winzip because it wouldn't delete and i thought somehow i would be able to delete it if i changed what it opened with. To my luck it not only changed how that file opened but what pretty much everything else on my computer opened with. Now whenever i got to run anything Winzip Pops up. The only way i can access things is by selecting "Run as". I mean it's annoying but thats not all, i'm not sure if this is because of the file i changed but when i'm on the internet, i can't download anything, open things in new windows, and when i enter a new site to go to i get this message which reads " C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop is not accessible.
Access is denied." after that message it does go to the site but still. I copy e-mail into a Word document, write an answer and copy it back into the mail. The mail-and-answer document is saved locally (a strategy that keeps my mailbox always empty). But when I open the document later on, just to look at it, when closing it asks if I want to save the changes, even though I made no change. If I write first into a new Word document, this doesnít happen, so maybe some flag is set when I first copy the mail into Word. Any idea where this is located and how to unset it? Hi I accidentally changed default permissions on the application data folder and now everything is messed up.

Why I did this I do not know but I un-hid the folder and selected "apply changes to sub folders and files".

At first outlook would not work and I sort of fixed that by un-checking "hidden" directly on the Outlook folder but I now see many apps are giving me "Access Denied" errors. This grieves me to no end and I dread having to do a re-build on my pc which will take countless hours.

I tried doing a system restore but the restore failed and it would not let me restore to an earlier checkpoint. I tried an XP repair with the system disk (which took 45 minutes) and that did not change any permissions on the application data folder.

PC's make me want to hang myself... LOL

any advice on what to do with the application data folder????
Am I doomed and have to backup all data and rebuild???

PLEASE I beg for sound advice!
Thanks in advance and Happy New Year

are you able to get into any other profileS (usernames)
if so, make sure it is an administrative account and right click the folder you changed permissions on, click properties, security, advanced, owner, then click the user account that you're using, check "replace owner on subcontainers and objects then click ok. A little help, please. Sometime on 4/12 my Comcast email slowed down. It takes 10 seconds to delete an email after I read it. If I delete without opening the email, it takes 3 seconds, still longer than my wife's system, identical computer, close to the same age and using the same cable modem. I'm using IE8, W7, 4G of memory. I clear my cookies before I go online each day and again throughout the day if I'm on for long. I have Norton 360 installed and it runs automatically when I turn on the system. I have run ccleaner to see if it finds anything obvious. I could use some help as to where to start lookng for problems. I can take it to the shop but, they don't trouble shoot, they just clear everything and start over. I would like to know what I did wrong so that I don't do it again.

I changed my CD ROM for a CD writer. When I booted up Windows 2000 it recognized the new hardware and installed it without any more information from me, even though the CD burner came with a disk. The drive does not appear on Explorer and does not work. The device manager recognizes the device, listing it with an explanation mark and says it cannot be operated because it does not have the driver - Error 31. However if you look at the driver listed in the device manager and it lists an INF file in Windows Publisher as the driver. However, whilst this file does not do the business when you try to update the deriver it tells you that a suitable one is already installed. I have uninstalled the driver and checked in PhoenixBIOS that all drivers are set to Auto but each time I reboot it simply finds the same wrong file and the CD reader does not work. This is catch 22 because I can't load the drivers on the CD supplied until the CD ROM works and the CD ROM won't work without the right driver. This is the fifth time I have installed a CD burner and on each other occasion the machines have successfully led me through the installation process. This time it is inexplicably different. I would be grateful for any ideas.

Double click on the file, and when it asks you if you want to import it into the registry, choose Yes.
You'll notice a new option in the right-click menu to Rename the Recycle Bin.
You can also rename it by highlighing the Bin and hitting F2, or by highlighting it and clicking on the file name (just like renaming any other file.

If you want to turn off this new feature, make another .reg file with the same content as above, but change the first number in the "Attributes"=hex: line from 50 to 40 and import that file into the registry.

I can see the 'project explorer' but not the associated code to my modules. If I select 'view code' it comes up in another window. Previously I had the explorer and the code in the same window for easy editing.

I have tried all the view settings and cant get it back. Can some one help on this hopefully simple problem..

Ok, funny enough I just messed up my view also....this is how I fixed it... first go tools Options >Docking Tab>..make sure it is checked.

then drag the Proj ex window to the top left and you should see a rectangle outline suggesting where to drop should snap into place

When I open "My Network Places" there has always been an icon showing multiple computers for "Computers Near Me'. Just today it has changed to a icon like a piece of paper with the windows logo in the center. (Best way I can describe it) If I double click it, it opens but none of the home network computers is shown. All 3 other rigs can access this one, and all can go online.

No new programs have been installed, and I haven't been playing around in the registry.

And one other problem not related. My connection to the net seems to randomly drop out for 1-2 minutes, then continues on as normal. I've tried disconnecting the router and using only one pc, but no change. Running AT-T DSL and called their "tech support" but I've talked to rocks that were smarter then them.

Any help on either/both issues would be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys,

I ran into a bit of an issue today while testing a vpn software on a virtual machine(win7); I succesfully connected to vpn, then the connection dropped and since with the vpn connection another ip address was assigned, now I'm unable to communicate with that VM.
I am able to find it in SCCM via hostname, but can't reboot it or start anything on it.

Any input is much appreciated!

A:Solved: VM connected to VPN changed IP and now RDC isn't possible

Ok, well, I solved it.

I removed the security group that gave me access to vpn from Active Directory and when it updated the group policy the connection dropped. Now I can access the vm again.

Putting it out there in case anyone else encounters this issue.

Hi and help!
Have a bit of a weekend crisis! I have my works laptop home and tried to simply add to my home network but unfortunately changed the network ID for home use, after re-starting it now asks for username and password which mine no longer works, it looks as though Iíve changed my domain somehow.

Hopefully my works IT guys can solve this on Monday but I hope this hasnít caused too much trouble? Can anyone tell me if thereís a quick fix or will my works IT guys solve it with out a re-install?

A:Solved: Can't log on after network id changed!

Welcome to TSG!

If you switched it from being a domain member to being a Workgroup member, you'll need a local account to access the laptop.

They can switch it back at work easy enough, as they should have a User name and Password for the system.

You could try Administrator with no password. Though if your IT guys are doing their job, they should have not only assigned a password to the Administrator account, but actually renamed it.

the spec is:

Asus A7N8X-Deluxe - nForce-2
Athlon XP 2500+
1GB DDR PC2700 (PC333)
80Gb Western Digital

when i boot up i get two warnings:
- Floppy drive(s) failed
- Warning!! CPU have been changed (although CPU has correctly been recognised at the top of the screen).

i've tried every permutation of the floppy drive lead and it's still not working (although the green light on the drive is up, so no prob with power supply).

as for CPU having been changed... all the components are supposedly new!! does this mean i've been sold an old hard drive and an improperly reformatted one at that???

any help much appreciated.

many thanks,

I tried to back up my .pst files in MS Outlook 2007. This is a bit confusing, but here goes:

The normal path: doc & set\owner\local set\\microsoft\outlook\outlook.pst still shows in Explorer.

Nero: when trying to backup, the path is the same as above, but after microsoft....there is no outlook.

MS Outlook: the properties for the Personal Folder shows: res://C:\prog files\microsoft office\office 12\1033\OUTLWVW.DLL/outlook 3.htm

Search: I did a search for .pst and nothing came up
So, in Outlook, I went back to Personal Folder properties and browsed to the above Explorer path to the .pst extension. Now, Outlooks Personal Folder window says "Unable to display the folder" It is a blank box with "Cannot display the folder!" in it. The inbox - outbox - sent, etc all work okay though.

I tried clicking 'default' in the properties and it shows the outlook3.htm path.
I have backed up to my desktop and it is a .pst extension.

Please tell me the correct path. Also, since I have read various pitfalls of different ways to back it up...... what is the best way to back up onto a DVD.

A:Solved: .pst path changed to .htm ???

Hi megabyte

The correct path should be:
The normal path: doc & set\owner\local set\\microsoft\outlook\outlook.pst

This should be the path that shows the Outlook Today page when you click on the top/root folder of the Personal Folders:
MS Outlook: the properties for the Personal Folder shows: res://C:\prog files\microsoft office\office 12\1033\OUTLWVW.DLL/outlook 3.htm

Changing the path back did not return the Outlook Today page?

The Personal Folders file is indeed a .pst file
I just copy the .pst file as a backup.

I've accidentally changed the autorun for .exe to .rar., meaning I can't launch .exe programs. Whenever I click on an .exe file, it comes up with an autorun window, where I can choose some programs to run it with, but not any sort of .exe runner.

So, I tried deleting WinRaR, but it didn't work. I then checked the control panel's Autorun settings, and it is set to "Install or run program".

I've tried quite alot of "fixes" like doing some commands in Window's Command, though these fixes seem to be meant for viruses corrupting .exe files.

I'm running Vista.

Any help?

A:Solved: CPU is unworkable or has changed.......

Hi, That would definitely be one thing to check on! You can often take them to a good computer repair OR sales place, they test them for free (and sell you a good one if it turns out bad). Test takes just a few seconds, they are either good or bad. Easier for them to do if you remove the supply, remember or mark the position of all the cables, and check that they are installed correctly when you hook them back up.

Is the CPU fan turning OK? You can pull a side of the case off and check it while running, check all the fans.

Power supplies have fans that can go bad or stick, they make a racket usually so you would likely have noticed it before.

You might actually need a better quality supply, not a higher output, but expect to pay around $40 up for a decent one.

The least expensive ones sometimes do not have what they claim, and any even brand new can be screwy.

This is weird, and I know it is some sort or spyware, or trojan, or some such, running, but dang if I can find it. Here is what I've noticed:

On a friends PC, which I have cleaned up from all kinds of malware, I now go to Google and search for anything. The results come in -- and a fraction of a second later -- the results change and what was as the top two hits, I see those hits replaced, or what seems like, moved a little further down the list and now the top two hits are some sort of vaguely related but always some "free offer" or "bogus and/or spyware" website.

I do the exact same search with my own computer, through the very same router and my results come in and remain stable, with none of the malware websites listed, at all.

I have cleaned up this oddly acting PC, I have installed all the XP service packs, all of the MS updates; installed and run SpyBot S&D (from Patrick Michael Kolla at Safer Networking Limited) and now no malware is found with that; I have installed Ad-Aware (from Lavasoft), and that now the results come back clean with that as well; I have even installed the beta release of the Microsoft Spyware Search tool, also that comes back clean. I also installed McAfee VirusScan v8 with all the latest updates and run that too. Everything is now clean - BUT STILL... (gasp)

When I turned on my computer this evening I got quite a surprise. I entered my password and when the start screen came up it looked very much like a guest account; IE, file explorer, desktop, and Store. I normally have about two pages of tiles.

When I looked at the user accounts, the guest account is turned off. My administrator account is there and an account that I didn't realize existed; ASP.Net machine account. All of my saved settings are gone. It appears that my files are intact. What's going on?

A:[SOLVED] User account seems to have changed

The ASP.Net machine account can be deleted since it's associated with net framework 1.1, but if the Admin account is working OK and you have all your personal files, I'd try a System Restore to a date prior to the problem before doing anything. My best guess is it occurred when Windows Update ran last week.

A:Solved: Screen changed colour

Yes, one color may be gone from the monitor. Try another monitor to find out. The color of your screen should be missing red, green, or blue. It's hard to say if red is gone or reduced from the pink you describe, but some images ought to show clearly that one of those colors is missing.

A color could disappear from your graphics card, too, and that is usually caused by overheating, though simple age-related failure can cause it, too. Make sure it has fans running if it has fans and that all vents are clear. But if something burned out, it could be too late for that to make any difference.
