Internet browser closes as soon as it opens, displays error message.

Q: Internet browser closes as soon as it opens, displays error message.

After I turned off my PC for the night, the next day I turned it on to find that all of my web browsers "stopped working". The moment I try to open Google Chrome, Firefox, or IE, they all display the message, "_____ has stopped working". the system doesn't prompt me to find a solution or anything.

I have already run a complete virus scan with adaware, malwarebytes, and super anti spyware. I am quite honestly at an impasse... please help.

Hi there,

Can you try opening the programs directly from the program files folder for each?

Quote:

C:\Program Files etc

Also can you confirm its just web browsers that give you this issue, all other programs open fine.

Hi, I have recently started having problems with Internet Explorer after downloading music from the net (will not be doing that again without virus checkers, lesson learnt!).

It closes after a few seconds of being online, with the usual error message (send report to Microsoft / do not send error report etc)... then I can't get on the internet again.

We've run the usual virus checkers (AVG, NTL's own brand) and haven't fixed the problem.

Does anyone know which file to look for and delete, and which programs I'll need to use to get rid of the virus? - and what it is?

A:Help! - Virus - Internet Explorer Closes After A Few Seconds, With Error Message

Lets continue by doing a few more scans for malware. If your running Win XP/2000, download and scan with Ewido Anti-Spyware v4.0 in "SAFE MODE".Print out the Ewido Install and Scan Instructions. Download and scan with Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06. Setup & Configure as shown here.Download and scan with Spybot S&D 1.4. Setup & Configure as shown here.[DO NOT choose the option to install TeaTimer]Note: If you encounter any error messages while downloading the updates, manually download them from here.Since your having trouble with IE you may not be able to perform any online scans. I recommend that you download Firefox and then perform this online Virus scan:Trend Micro Housecall Scan for FirefoxOnce done with these scans try using IE again. If the problem persists then it would be best to post a hijackthis log to have a detailed look at your system. Let us know at that point and we will instruct you on how to post a log.

Running on Windows 8 I have a problem where a blank Firefox (23.0.1) browser repeatedly opens and the closes about 10 seconds later, this happens roughly every minute.

I ran a Superanti Spyware Scan earlier today and discovered a Trojan and deleted it, from the log file:

Trojan.Agent/Gen-Bancos
    C:\PROGRAM FILES (X86)\COMMON FILES\SYSOBJECT\JS3260.DLL

I can't recall whether the firefox browser opening and closing happened before or after running this scan and subsequent action taken by Superanti Spyware but the problem has only appeared today.  Further scans using Avast, Superanti Spyware and Malwarebytes are clean, beyond tracking cookies but the issue continues.  I have used Uninstall Programs to remove Firefox, however even with Firefox uninstalled the browser window keeps reappearing.  I have re-installed Firefox after uninstalling.

Using Task Manager and its Details tab a new entry appears when this browser appears, and disappears when it closes, the file is a .exe file called update.exe located in Program Files(x86)/Common Files/sysobject, it bares the Firefox logo but doesn't disappear after Firefox has been uninstalled.  Scanning this file with the 3 malware detectors listed above gives no result.

When this file is sent to the recycle bin an error message pops up at the time when the next browser opening event should occur, http://s9.postimg.org/i8k9zevov/errormessgae.png  is a screen... Read more

I have worked on a friends laptop
windows 7

internet explorer opens and shows the outline of the dialogue box and then the page closes

I have done the following

Trying to re-install - message , version already on PC

Rebooted at various stages throughout
- Went to Turn Windows Features On and Off and un-clicked Internet 9
- Installed updates - removed IE10 and IE11 updates
- Ran the MSFIX - Microsoft Fixit 50778.msi, finished OK
- Ran "Command" as admin - and tried this command

FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*9.*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /upfname /norestart"

This failed with access denied

- After removing the updates for IE10 and IE11,

I was then allowed to install IE11 which took a while to fully install after the full installation and a reboot.
Exactly the same error occur

IE opens with just the outline of the PAGE and then timer shows for a while, then screen closes.

I have left my friend to create the recovery DVDs and then once created to do a system restore back to December. I just wanted to make sure that if there was a problem with restore, she had a recovery option.

She knows this problem has been on the pc for a while, and shes not sure if before or after the oldest restore point of 19/12/13

She has a full subscription to Norton 360 on the PC

Ok so I've had this problem for a while: When I click on Internet Explorer the window pops up for just a second and closes. I've searched all over every tech support forum there is and usually, HijackThis logs are involved so each solution is individual.

So here is my HijackThis log
(Note: When I run a scan I get an error saying 'For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file...')

I have a laptop with Windows 7 64 bit. The first few days I had it, Internet Explorer worked fine. Then it malfunctioned. When you double click the IE shortcut it would open for a split second then close. When you went to the Start menu, Programs, it would do the same.

I downloaded and installed IE 8 64 bit from Microsoft's website. When I double click the IE 8 64 bit shortcut it opens fine! The problem is, I can't set IE 8 64 as my default browser. I get a Windows error message that says you can not set IE 8 64 as your default browser.

So I can open IE 8 64 manually but any link I click tries to open IE 8 (32 bit presumably) which still opens then immediately closes.

Please help!

You're going to have to edit the registry to do this..

use regedit and modify the following
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\IEXPLORE.EXE
Change the value to C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\command
Change the value - "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome

How are you trying to get into DOS? The easiest way is to press Start>Run and type cmd. Alternatively go Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt.

BTW, _default doesn't work for me either.

Hi All

I've got to the slitting wrists stage of this problem. I hope someone can help...

I've been getting the blue screen of death recently and upon checking my computer's error logs I found that it was a problem with my Radeon graphics card. I uninstalled and reinstalled the Radeon software but the audio went. I couldn't find the audio driver (long story) so I did a system restore which worked - everything was back to normal. Or so I thought.

Next morning I tried to open IE but upon opening it closed immediately. I've done a bit of research (ON THE INTERNET AT WORK!) and have done a HijackThis log.

It may be a coincidnece but the other day my screensaver changed - it's now a black screen which says Oxigenscr V5.00.0000. Maybe this is a virus. Thank you for your help in advance

Hello. I hope I am doing this correctly. I am running Windows XP (SP2) and am having several problems. When opening IE, I get a slide in called Internet Speed Monitor, I have no idea what this is and it doesn't show up in the control panel. I have also noticed that IE will open and/or close by itself, although this has pretty much quit after completing the required steps before posting the Hijackthis log. Below is a list of what I have done along with the Hijackthislog.1. Cleaned all temp. files out.2. Ran Ad-Aware - Had 410 privacy issues with the first run and 0 on the second run.3. Ran Spy-bot - Had 7 issues with the first run and 0 on the second run.4. Ran Trend-Micro Housecall - 51 infections all cleared out.5. Ran Panda Active Scan - Found over 200 cookie files, however, they were not removed (I removed them manually)6. Ran Bit Defender - 0 problems found7. Ran AVG Virus Scan - 0 problems found.8. Made sure Windows update was done.** I wanted to mention that after I completed the items above, I noticed that upon log on, I get an error message that says, "SQL Server Installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with (Could Not Open SQLEVN70RU)Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 4:48:16 PM, on 12/28/2007Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16574)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS&...

FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*9.*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /norestart"

This failed with access denied

- After removing the updates , i was then allowed to install IE11 which took a while to fully install after the full installation and a reboot.

I went to my 'documents', then 'downloads' section to delete files and could only open those files with a picture, such as pictures my brother sent, video etc--many files have the Internet Explorer logo on the cover, when I click to open them the screen attempts to open then closes quickly..then it starts trying to open more, like a domino effect--my only option at this point is to restart the computer. A few times I had to simply hit the power button and not go thru the normal shutdown procedures. I can access the internet no problem, it's just in this one section where I am at a loss as to what to do.

A:downloading something and the program only opens and closes internet explores

It sounds like something is horribly wrong with what ever you actually downloaded.
it should not respond or do what you are describing,
->> that is responding like nasty malware usually does...
I would stop trying to open it and tell us the full name of exactly what you downloaded,
with the link to where you got it from.
when you download something like that you should manually scan it with an anti-virus program.

I am getting a window dispay "IE script error". This has been occuring when I was in affected by the "windows Restore" malware. I am not sure which came first, but felt the "windows Restore" malware was most important to fix.

I found your guide to fixing this malware. I ran the rKill.exe,(which I ran). My desktop disapeared, but I could browse to malwarebytes_setup with Task Manager. Running MBMA updated and scanned. 8 problems were found.

I am now stumped on how to fix "IE script error", which I feel psrt of the entire attack on my computer. Task Manager does not show a process for the window, which makes me suspect my xp os has been sandboxed.

Please let me know what I should do.

When first starting out, Internet Explorer kept closing after several minutes of use.
I tried Firefox and Opera but they all have the same result.
It usually closes when I refresh a page, change to another page, opening menus (examples, Options, Help, About)
I was wondering whether anyone has every had this problem and how they resolved it.
If nobody has had it or nobody has fixed it, can you please post any ideas you might have or whether the error is part of the program, computer or is some sort of virus

Greetings everyone,

I would like to describe a problem that has been happenning to my world of warcraft since a certain windows reinstallation. I have tried everything, even technical support, but nothing worked. The problem would be: i play for example for ten minutes and suddenly the game closes itself without any error message or something like that. it might happen at any time, for example at the time when i just right-click on WoW's icon, or while loading the loading screen, even when WoW is minimized to the taskbar etc. it is very weird... it has never happened before, although i've been playing WoW on this machine for approximately a year. As i couldn't do anything, i reinstalled windows for several times, but it hasn't solved the problem. Then something came to my mind: it is quite likely that some kind of windows service doesn't like WoW running, so i disabled all windows services in msconfig. at this point i thought i had solved the problem; the game ran normally for a few days, but things are not so easy and the problem turned up again. I reinstalled the system again and disabled all windows services but WoW closed itself in the same way. After this i downloaded a programme named Error Repair Professional and eliminated all errors in my system and it seemed to be working again. WoW ran without being closed for a few days, but you can find out what has happened... yes, WoW closes itself again.... i have checked my computer with eset smart s... Read more

Please download HijackThis. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Post the whole log file here. Do not fix anything since most of them listed there are harmless (some are system required). This program will help us determine if there is any spyware/malware on your computer.

These past few days, sometimes an error message says its encountered a problem and has to close down, you know with the error box and Send/Don't send buttons, and everything crashes. Then afterwards, when i try to open Firefox, no pages will load, so I have to restart. It's very annoying. Just now, I lost all ym settings and bookmarks.

Anyways the error message said that : sevrmswin.exe had to close down.
Please help

While I was spending a couple of hours over at a friends's shooting pool and drinking beer, he asked me take a look at his new-at-Xmas Windows 8 computer.  I remember that it's a Dell, that it's 64 bit, and that it's not 8.1, only 8.

His family had already managed to get it screwed up with 24x7 help, search conduit, some Speed Up My PC and Optimize My PC nonsense, and I told him that I could take care of removing that junk easily.  Wrong....

The first think I noticed is that Programs and Features off the Control Panel had only 3, 4 programs listed.  I let it populate while it was my turn to shoot and 5 minutes later the 3 or 4 programs was all we got.  I'd never seen that before.  Nothing that was displayed in P&F was any of the junk I wanted to remove.

When I clicked on the IE icon on his desktop I got the following msg box, headed Bad Image

I closed the box and his home page opened.  I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes 2.0.  I think I ran Threat Detection (why they decided to change the name from Quick Scan is a mystery).  It found 2113 infections - all of them PUPs.  I got rid of them all and rebooted.  No change to P&F except that now Malwarebytes was listed as well.  No change to the browser pop up either.

I have bought a brand new notebook with nothing more on it but Windows (and drivers). It has not been connected to the internet (no malware issue).

The problem is that when I don't use the computer for maybe 30 minutes or so I get an error message in a pop up message box saying "Unidentified error" (very helpful info... ). When I click the ok button the pop up window closes and I can continue using the computer normally. As long as the computer is in use I never get this error message (therefore no hardware issue I guess), only when not using it for some time.

Since there is only Windows on the HDD the issue is not associated with any particular program (only Windows I guess). I have reinstalled Windows once but without change because I still get the same message when I let the computer sit there for some time.

I haven't checked the energy saving settings...yet... but they shouldn't cause such a problem, should they?

Of course I appreciate all suggestions you might have...

Hello.

This problem only occured recently and I don't remember installing any new softwares or changing the hardware it just magically appeared somehow. What usually happens is I have World of Warcraft (a game) running and when I alt+tab to check my browser/e-mail et cetera and then try to tab back in the screen just freezes and black fizzy lines appear in segments on the screen horizontally and then after a few seconds I get this error message and am forced to manually restart my computer by pressing the power button.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

This also happens sometimes when I try to expand the size of a YouTube video to full-screen. The screen blacks out and freezes (the sound although seems to continue for around 1-2 seconds) and then the blue screen comes up again.

Anyone know what's causing this? It's very annoying even though it doesn't happen very often (once every 2 days or so).

Thank you and hope I was clear

I have a strange problem with an older computer running windows 98 and the 2000 works suite (with word). Every time word is opened it instead opens a illegal operation dialog box and if you click details it says "invalid page fault in module MSO9.dll."

I've tried everything I can think of to no avail. I've tried starting office in safe mode (with /safe and by holding ctrl). I've tried renaming/moving normal.dot. I tried renaming the hkcu\software\microsoft\office\9.0, which made office act like it was reinstalling when I opened word, but then, same error. I tried "repairing" word from it's installer. I've even uninstalled word via it's uninstaller and then ran microsoft's word 2000 removal tool, rebooted and then reinstalled word off the disk. Even with a complete reinstall it just craps out and does the same "illegal operation, page fault..." message every time it's opened. It's very frustrating.

I'm wondering if there are remnants of word still left in the registry or spattered about the computer even after using the word removal tool that might be causing the problem. I also am thinking it could possibly be some conflict with the rest of the works package or even with IE 5. I really don't know what else to try (other than reformatting the computer and starting over, which I really don't want to do). If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them!

Edit: I did see this from the MS KB. I already tried reinstalling like it says, but I didn't do the rename mso9.dll and winword.exe. I guess I'll try that, but I sincerely doubt that renaming before the repair will have any effect if a full reinstall doesn't work.Click to expand...

OK... Now think about it

It's a step-by-step solution from Microsoft for a Microsoft product. Do you think their own solution would explicitly tell you how to find and rename these two files BEFORE the repair if it didn't make any difference???

I might try to guess as to why they tell you to first rename these files but why bother? I'm certain if they indicate it as needed its needed (for fixing a bug, that is, as i wouldn't stock this faith if it was a product claim )

Hi everyone, I am running XP SP2 on an Apple Macbook pro. Everything had been fine up until a couple weeks ago when my internet browser began unexpectedly closing. I noticed the browser (Internet Explorer and Safari for Windows) would close on sites such as http://security2.comcast.net/get-help/mcafee_free_scan.aspx?cid=NET_33_49 , - this site is Comcast's McAfee freescan.( Whatever this site activates or runs causes the browser to close). I tried going to this site after experiencing this to see if I had a virus or spyware that was causing the issue but I can't open this site on this computer. Navigating from Comcast's homepage then to the Security page, and then clicking on "Check Your Computer" would just cause the browser to close with no message. I am able to go to the check you computer link on my other computers.

I searched the net for this issue and most of the people who were experiencing the browser closing unexpectedly had a java issue. I uninstalled java and reinstalled it and still no help. I also disabled it in the browser settings. I also uninstalled and reinstalled both browsers. I have also purchased spyware doc with virus scan and firewall and although it found a few low-level spyware, it didn't fix my problem.

I assumed it was related to the internet applications and I found that people suggest the application HiJackThis to get a log of what's going on. So I downloaded the application and when I tried installing HiJackTh... Read more

Basically, it starts up, wont let me either open in safe mode to system restore, wont let me press[del] to enter start up mode.

Suggestions pls, I presume I need a boot disk, can I get one save it on CD and use it that way ??

All suggestions welcome, as I am stuck!!!

Thanks!

A:Xp Opens, Then Closes, Then Opens, Then Crashes Etc..

Hi puertorico, welcome to BC!A little clarification, when you say wont let me press[del] to enter start up mode do you mean that you can't enter the system BIOS utility (the thing that comes up before Windows) or that you can't get to the boot menu (where things like "Safe Mode" and "Last Known Good Configuration" are shown) by pressing F8 before Windows loads? If you have your Windows XP installation CD, then that's all we'll really need to fix this. If not, then there are some alternatives we can discuss.Post back soon!

A:Internet Explorer Browser Window Unexpectedly Closes

IE Browser problem persists. Internet Explorer browser window unexpectedly closes within 20-30 seconds of opening one or more windows, especially for 15-30 minutes after computer is first booted up. Problem may then stop for hour or more, then may later reappear sporadically. Does not appear to affect websites such as cox.mail.com or online banking programs, or off-line applications (word, excel, etc.).

Related data entry problem also continues to persist most of time. While entering data on any website or scrolling mouse within website, the entry or mouse operation is interrupted. Must left-click mouse onto site to continue.

Doctor SpyWare and XoftSpy anti-spyware successfully blocked repeated infections by AURORA and PARTYPOKER, but do not appear to correct IE browser closing problem. Repeated anti-spyware scans show no infections. And McAfee VirusScan and McAfee Personal FireWall Plus show no virus infections.

I really hope someone can help me fix this. I've attempted to contact so many techs and still no help. So here it goes...

When I click on a web link and it pulls it up in a new window and I close that new window, it tells me that Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. It gives me the option to send or not send, but when I try to send it gives me another error message. When I just choose 'don't send' this error message pops up:

CiceroUIWndFrame: iexplore.exe - Application Error
The exception unkown software exception (0x0eedfade) occured in the application at location 0x7c812a5b. -- I click okay and this pops up:

The instruction at "0x0299258e" referenced memory at "0x02ab3eec". The memory couldnot be "read". Click okay to terminate the program. --- I click okay and this pops up:

Error - Runtime error 216 at 029958E.

After I click okay on that error message, all browsers are closed. Can someone please help?? And I know a little about this stuff, but not much. So step-by-step specifics would be appreciated. Thank you!

A:Solved: Explorer gives error message and closes all windows!

Well, apparently I have fixed the problem myself. But I thought just in case anyone else came across something like this, I would tell them what I did. I just installed all of the updates that my computer had found. And apparently that's what it needed.

The error message box reads something like this:

Program ~ "insert program name here" has caused a problem and needs to close. Would you like to save a copy of the dump file? The error box message then automatically keeps overlapping itself with a copy of the same message box multiple times (as many as 40) until the program finally shuts down. The only option in the box is to click "okay" or to save the dump file...or to close out the box with the "x". Any click terminates the program. I've tried numerous times to re-start the program or re-boot the computer to no avail.

I had this first show up with Microsoft Outlook and then later with another non-Microsoft program. I didn't use Outlook for several days and the problem "went away" on it's own. But a few days later it showed up on another unrelated program. I didn't use that program for several days and the error message dissappeared as well! I've downloaded all the latest virus updates from Norton and ran a complete scan a couple of times, but nothing was found. I also made sure my Spy Bot was up to date and did a scan to find problems...again none was found. Any ideas what could be causing this!? I'm afraid what ever it is, it is still lurking there somewhere waiting to attack another (or same) program.

A:Multiples (Tiling) of Same Error Message closes Programs

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Run the System File Checker to see if you have any missing/corrupt files

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. You will need your Windows cd.

You may also want to do an online virus scan with one of these. I found that Norton will not catch everything.

Scan your pc with 2 of these free online scanners:
Panda ActiveScan
RAV AntiVirus
Housecall Be sure to put a check the box beside AutoClean

Reinstalling the program effected may also help.

Hi there, i have a toshiba netbook Model name is TOSHIBA NB200-10J s/no 59128264K and i have been using it for a while now.
The trouble is that i was charging my mobile phone and decided to connect the mobile phone to my netbook via phone cable, the moment i did that, the netbook just went off and that was the beginning of trouble, it never booted after that.
I got black screen with these error messages below:
''For Realtek RTL8101E/8102E(L)/8103E(L) PCIE Etherenet Controller V1.13 (081016)
PXE-E61:Media Test Failure, check cable
PXE-MOF:Exiting PXE ROM

then after a few seconds the same thing repeats and goes on continously.
I figured i shoud plug in the Ethernet cable since i was always using wireless connection to Router so i did that and the PXE-E61:Media test failure, check cable error message line disappeared but the other lines remained, however it took a step further and stated the MAC address and then got to DHCP.... and nothing happened.
I still cannot use my netbook and i have no idea what has happened.

A:Netbook wont boot anymore after a little incident, displays error message

Your netbook is trying to boot from a source where the boot info is missing. This could be a BIOS problem where for some reason it is trying to boot from the network or there is a problem with your the info on your HD or the HD itself is bad. For starters go into BIOS and check the boot order.

Windows Live Mail closes unexpectedly repeatedly without error message and one account disappeared?

I have multiple accounts being used for years on Windows Live Mail - Version 2009 - Build 14.0.8117.0416 on XP Pro SP3

Recently, Windows Live Mail closes unexpectedly repeatedly without error message
Then as I kept trying to figure out I noticed one account disappeared? I think that happened later.

I have the ENTIRE WL MAIL Log file.

To track why this was happening I went offline mode and it would not crash. So, I figured it was something to do with the Sync.

So I disabled the Auto Sync for every account I had and did manual syncs for one account at a time. Found the account that was causing this.

Its a hotmail account. I signed into Hotmail and all seems ok. I am posting the follow lines from the LOG, when I manually synched that account from WL Mail a few times.

I could try to trace back into the LOGS as to when this drama actually started originally, and post that and / or most of it. Let me know if someone can help dissect Windows Live Mail issues.
Found its due to Sync of one account, Error Log info posted. Wonder who can fix this?

I have a new Surface Pro 3 with WIN8.1 and MS Office 10 on it. This is a new machine (2 weeks old.) All Office programs launch properly except Word. When Word is launched (either from a desktop shortcut to the program or by clicking a Word doc) the program opens and immediately displays an error message, "Windows is searching for Launcher.exe" "The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'Logitech QuickCam.lnk' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, then try again. When clicking "OK" the same error message repeats. Clicking "OK" again the errors repeat a 3rd. time, then either a blank document opens or the document selected at launch opens. Word behaves normally for the rest of the session.

After a 2-hr session with MS-Office tech support, including the full download repair of Office, and a half-hour of the MS tech in control of the computer doing things, the error persists and the MS tech stated that MS cannot repair it. No Logitech software is now or ever has been installed on this machine.

Has anyone ever heard of this problem, and does anyone know of a fix?

A:Word opens with error message

After 2 days of searching and trying things, I found a shortcut in one of the DOCS sub-folders referring to Logitech QuickCam. For some reason, WORD was attempting to run this at launch, producing the errors since the program isn't there. No idea how the shortcut got there, but after deleting it the error stopped. Thanks for looking.

Recently, I discovered that when connected to the internet via Microsoft Internet Explorer or Firefox, the following phenomenon plagues my computer.

Upon visiting an internet site, as you know, a window pane on the task bar encapsulates or describes the site. (For example, as I write this, the task bar's window pane below reads "BleepingComput".)

Each time I connect to a site-- any site-- and linger there, a second pane sporadically and spontaneously appears and then quickly disappears. It's difficult to detect because no new window accompanies the window pane and because it disappears so quickly. Furthermore, this phantom second pane doesn't contain any text. Although it's approximately the same size as the ordinary window pane, only a small white square, approximately a third of the pane's size, identifies it.

The secondary pane suggests some trojan's partially thwarted effort to establish a full, complete connection to a site and to open the accompanying window. Alternatively, it suggests some spyware recording my internet history.

I attach the requisite logs below. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

A:Spy-Malware Opens 2nd Internet Browser Window

By the way, I neglected to add to my first post, I cannot run RootRepeal.exe on my computer. Each time I run it I receive a "Intializing, please wait" message in a gray box and the program remains frozen at that stage indefinitely. I've let it run for hours and it never proceeds beyond that stage. Moreover, it consume the entirety of my computer's available memory and precludes me from using it for any other purpose. Can I add any additional information-- perhaps, a combofix log-- to clarify my problem or to assist a tech person in addressing my problem? If I just need to wait for someone to get around to it, I apologize for the impatience.===========Hello Please note: you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you ask for help elsewhere. I started up my laptop and got a "physical dump of memory" message. Then it started dumping the memory. After that it took about 10 minutes for it to go t the desktop.

Now it just starts up like normal except IE doesn't work. I click to open it and it pops up and then closes. I tried reinstalling IE but now it opens and stays at a blank page and won't respond to me trying to go to any sites.

Decided I needed IE to update optional updates so reinstalled IE. Updated to IE7. All installed ok BUT IE now opens, displays home page and shuts down within 1 sec of home page loading with no warning.
Probably not related or maybe is....system restore won't restore anything past 3 days ago!!

Otherwise system seems to be running ok!! Running XP pro sp3 dual core intel with 1 g ram
Not running slow, crashing or showing any strange signs.....No hang on thats not normal for windows is it?

Been using AIM on my daughter's laptop since she got it about a year ago. Out of nowhere, it now simply flashes open for about a half of second and then closes. I have done all of the following in attempt to get it to work again. Her account works fine on other PCs and she can use AOL Express on this particular one. But AIM will just open and close:

1) Uninstalled and reinstalled
2) Registery clean
3) Ran full virus scan. Uninstalled/turned off anti-virus
4) Reviewed all new programs and add-ons and uninstalled anything new
5) Deleted cookies, internet temp files
6) Restored Windows to an earlier point.

I am exasperated. I would reinstall windows but I can't find the disc at the moment. Any other ideas?

Help!

A:AIM opens then closes

Hi marcanat,

I'm going ahead and guessing that those "other PC's" are not Windows 7 machines?

There has been a few reported incidents with this over other forums aswell, and with no specific solution. It seems however to be related to a driver conflict, a driver/device not supported by the official AIM software. You could try booting up Windows 7 in Safe-mode (with or without networking) and see if the problem persists. Or you could check in the Eventlog and see if there are any posts related to this, might say what is wrong.

Otherwise I'd recommend you checking with AIM support(if there is any) to see if your system/drivers are compatible.

Hi.. I really hope someone can help me with this annoying problem!

On a webpage, I have a link coded like this: <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a>

Just your normal standard link to open up your mail client (in my case it is Windows Mail).

In windows XP & IE6, clicking on a link like this would work properly.

However now that I am on Vista & IE7, when I click on this kind of "mailto" link, although it does open up my default mail client... it also opens up another browser window, which displays an error: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" with a URL of: "mailto:[email protected]"

If I try clicking on the same link in a Firefox browser.. there is no problem.

It appears that IE7 and mailto don't want to play nicely together! (While I was researching this problem, I read somewhere that it might have to do with "trusted sites".. but not sure!)

Can someone give me a solution to stop the additional IE7 browser window being created? Most of the time it sits on top of the eMail window, so you are unsure of where the eMail went.. which can be very confusing.. in addition to not being able to find the original window you were viewing.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!
SunnyOz

A:IE7 & mailto links & new browser window opens with error

Hello SunnyOz, and welcome to Vista Forums.

That is strange. I'm not sure why IE7 would try to open it as well when Windows Mail had opened with it as it should.

Double check to make sure that Internet Explorer and Windows Mail are set as the default program with all of their associations set to them as well to see if there may be something not set with them.

Do you have problems with any other mailto links opening like this? If not, then it may be a problem with that link from that website.

I was trying to install updates on our desktop last night and had to roll back because the XP3 update could not install. Now IE does not work. Also when I first logon to my machine, I get the messages cannot find and could not run or load C:\windows\inet2003\winlogon.exe.

A:IE opens then immediately closes

Its wise to make sure when you are doing updates and Service Packs to make sure the system is 100% malware free. With that said, why wold the SP3 not install? Did you recieve an error and if so what was the EXACT error message?

I'm using vista home premium 32bit.
Not really computer literate but know enough,
so if you could keep it simple would be appreciated.

A:IE half opens then closes

What do you mean 'half-open'? Can you elaborate a bit more? Does the IE window fill half the screen, and then close automatically, or does it load a webpage halfway thorugh and quit?

I'd suggest running a virus/malware scan first just to ensure that everything is clean. Update your anti-virus software and run a full scan.

Also, I would suggest trying alternative browers such as the excellent Opera or Firefox. Both are 100% free and IMHO, far superior to IE.

I had ACDSee 6 working fine. Then, I put in "Fujipix" photo reader for the Fujifilm digital camera I have. ACDSee 6 is now not working. When the program opens, it flashes on the screen for two seconds and then disappears. I can open a "jpg" file with the program, but the regular interface will not open, so I cannot "browse" to a folder or do anything else in the program.

I did the same on another computer, and ACDSee is working fine.

To get ACDSee to work, I have uninstalled Fujipix, uninstalled ACDSee, rebooted several times, gone through the registry and removed all references to both, reinstalled ACDSee 6, etc. Nothing seems to be working

I am running Windows XP Professional.

Any ideas on fixing this? Thanks for any help.

Hi All,

Internet Explorer (7 and 8) will open and close immediately under Vista Home Premium. I have tried the following:

1) Run IE in no adds-on mode. Does the same thing.

2) Reset all settings under the Internet Options Panel---when it gets to the third part 'Applying Default Settings' it fails.

3) Run Malware Malabytes in Safe Mode---nothing detected.

4) Install IE8 (wasn't working back when it was IE7), still no luck. Uninstalled back to IE 7, no working, and then back to IE8.

So, any ideas? I normally use Firefox and Opera, but there is one specific work-related website that requires some ASP scripting that neither Firefox or Opera can handle!

Thanks!

IE 11 opens and then closes immediately. The only way to open IE 11 is to right click on IE shortcut, select properties, then set to open minimized. Then click IE 11 on toolbar, and it opens. Setting IE 11 to Normal or Maximized causes IE 11 to open then immediately close. I have removed then re-installed IE 11, ran malewarebytes and ccleaner but IE 11 still has the same problem. I turned off GP rendering. I am out of ideas, does anyone have any other methods to try?

A:ie 11 opens then closes immediately

Run CCleaner-Slim or CCleaner-Portable & remove everything it finds, then try IE11 again. If that doesn't do it, go to Internet Options > Advanced tab, then click the reset button located near the bottom.https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/b...

Unfortunately I need IE7 for a stupid little app I'm running. IE6 and IE8 just won't work with it :-(

Machine is XP MCE-SP3 and was recently formatted so it's pretty clean.

Anyway same old story, IE6 works...IE8 works...IE7 opens for 500ms or so and disappears.
The process closes so it's not an issue where the window is simply hidden.

**********
I don't use this machine to get on the net
PC Functions:
Run MCE
Run IIS
Run an MS SQL DB that keeps tabs on my movies
Some video encoding using VirtualDub

Non MS Software Installed:
K-Lite Codec Pack
PowerISO
XP-AntiSpy (tweak)
Winrar
--Nvidia Drivers

MS Software installed:
MS ForeFront Client Security (AV)
MS SQL Server 2005

**********

Scanned with MS Forefront Client Security...nothing found
Scanned with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware......nothing found

Machine preperation for further troubleshooting:
1) All Run items removed (HKCU, HKLM, Startup Groups)

2) AV Service Completely disabled,
(no other security or spyware apps installed)

3) No toolbars or add-on's installed but I still checked disable all third party add-on's in Inet options.

Troubleshooting:
===Stage 1===
Downloaded IE7 setup to local drive
Uninstall IE7
Reboot
Install from local file
Reboot
Hit [Tools>Inet Options>Advanced>Reset]

===Stage 2===
Create new local admin account and login with that account.
I rip out out 7, reboot and IE6 works fine again.
Install IE8 it works great.

A:XP SP3 - IE7 opens and closes immediately

You can try to run the following command to see if any DLL files are missing/damaged.

sfc /scannow

Try also the install folder of the app you use with IE7, if there is a DLL called PSAPI.dll
if there is delete it or rename the file.

Hi, I'm having trouble getting Help and Support Center to open. When I went to Start and clicked Help and Support Center, nothing happens. I don't get an error message. When I opened Task Manager, I saw the process "Helpctr.exe" appear, but then it would disappear by itself. I have already reinstalled Help and Support from the Windows disk several times, but it didn't work. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Help and Support Opens, Then Closes

Hello,

Go to Start > [Settings] > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

Make sure the Help & Support service is Started and set to Automatic.
