Microsoft Optional Update Windows Live Essentials - yes or no?

Q: Microsoft Optional Update Windows Live Essentials - yes or no?

Apparently I already have a version of this on one of my computers because the optional update failed to update and said there was already a version on the computer. I am running Windows 7 upgrade over Vista on this particular machine.

I am having all kinds of permissions problems with this machine and am very disgusted with Microsoft right now and really want as little of their crap software on my machines as possible. Is Windows Live Essentials worth keeping? I don't use it but maybe that is because I don't know what to use it for.

Dear Forum,

I have noticed in my control panel the following programs:

Windows Live Essential 2011

Windows Live Mesh - in various languages

Microsoft Silverlight

I have read in various items on Google and I am not too sure whether or not to delete the various programs and what they do?

Could someone please assist me on what I can delete or keep?

Should I consider deleting any of the programs on the following skydrive items?

I am looking at cleaning up how much is on my computer that is not required.

A:Do you require Microsoft Live Mesh, Live Essentials and Microsoft Silv

Live Mesh is no longer supported. It was replaced by SkyDrive.
Silverlight may be needed to watch some videos, mostly on Microsoft Sites.
Windows Live Essentials has a number of programs among them Windows Live Mail Client, Windows Live Movie Maker and others.

Does anyone know why Microsoft canceled support/discontinued Microsoft Expression Web and why Windows Live Essentials, especially Windows Live Writer hasn't been updated in years? Both are great products but Windows Live Writer is my heartbeat but I stopped using it as i realized that Wordpress' dashboard is easier to work with now as it has been updated and I can upload my image galleries for a post flawlessly in WP's dashboard.

Windows Live Writer can't upload WordPress galleries to the WordPress site directly. It can only work with Picasa and OneDrive and the files are stored on those accounts while only the thumbnails get publisher to my WordPress site. I can't get the thumbnails to work in this manner anymore either as when i try to upload galleries using Windows Live Writer I get error messages saying it won't go through. That's why I stopped using Live Writer.

Expression Web seems okay but Adobe Muse can do better effects but I don't use Muse right now as it is problematic. If Muse and Expression Web were somehow fused, not by a company merger but shared the same features I would be all up for buying software like that. But my cousin who is a techie purchased Muse and Expression Web several years ago and was using them briefly and regretted using Expression Web as it is so basic and primitive. Adobe Muse is too tricky and the items never stay where you place them. I have seen people work with Muse at work and in tutorials but unfortunately all my... Read more

A:Windows Live Essentials Updates + Microsoft Expression Web

Expression Web is still available, just has been made free with little or no support. Microsoft seems to do well in reducing costs when things don't sell well due to competition from third-party products. As with all software one has to consider the advantages and disadvantages for their needs. I had to drop FrontPage when I went with the 64-bit version of Office 2010 and Expression Web is fine for my need. As for WordPress that was recommended by my Domain Host, I just couldn't get around the blogging part so do not use it. Serif has a product called WebPlus [ WebPlus X7 - Easy to use and professional web design software from Serif ] that seems useful but since they've moved all their offices to the UK my MasterCard and Visa cards get blocked by the card company 'due to high card fraud from the UK' so I'll keep my eyes open for alternatives.

I just received notification from the automatic update service that Windows wants to install a 156MB Windows Live Essentials update. 156 megs! Except for Security Essentials I use none of the programs involved in this update. Can someone please tell me why I NEED to install this update. I'm not familiar enough with Win 7 just to dismiss it, but I'm not inclined to install this massive update. Any opinions from Windows 7 experts?

A:Windows Live Essentials Update

If you have any previous versions of Windows Live essentials installed the Windows will want to update it. As it's optional you don't need to install it if you don't want to. The size is the estimated size once ALL items have been installed.

You can, however, choose only to install certain parts if you wish once you download and run the installer

I have downloaded Microsoft essentials 2012 twice and get error message 0X80040705. I only want the windows live mail program not all the other ones included. I left a check mark in only win live mail. Both times I get this error message and it also has
dotnet 40 after the error code. I have this program on my laptop that is dying and want to put it on this laptop. I'd try to just transfer it from the old laptop but not sure just how to do it or if it can be done.

Did a Windows Live Essentials update, after which, my email contacts were all gone.

I did system restore, exported the old addys to a folder.
After closing Windows Live Mail, I could not reopen without re-doing the update install. So, I did.

When I went to the CONTACTS tab (bottom left) it never really opens.
It clears the emails or calendar, from the main window but leaves the same 'ribbon'
(or task bar or whatever at the top). It doesn't show the options that should be there for 'contacts' (no import/export/etc).

If it matters, I do not sign in to Windows Live Mail. When I open it, there's always a a popup that says I've tried to sign-in too many times with the wrong info.
I hit cancel, the popup goes bye-bye and I can use mail. Until now. Ugh!

ANY SUGGESTIONS?

A:Contacts gone after Windows Live Essentials update

If you don't use Hotmail as your main mail account, I suggest getting one, store all your contacts on it via its website, then use it to sign-in to WLM. Next, add the email accounts you do use then delete the Hotmail account you signed-in with.

I admin that I installed Windows Live Essentials a few days back. I didn't like it (sidebar: it made dealing with my many Outlook accounts a pain, but that's another discussion). So, I removed it.

Now, I just checked for updates and Windows Live Essentials was in my list to install. I installed everything except Windows Live Essentials. How do I remove it from the list?

I have tried rebooting since my successful update of the patches I wanted.

I looked in the SoftwareDistribution folder, thinking maybe there was a single file that I could remove, but there's my entire history of updates there, which I don't want to mess with.

I certainly don't want some other user on the machine to OK the install, so I would like to hide it. Steps? Thanks.

Hello all

I hope this is the correct forum to post.

I have Windows Vista 32 bit OS.

A New update icon has been showing on my tool bar but I have had problems installing these updates. However I have just looked at my history and can see that Windows Live Essentials 2011 KB2434419 has successfully installed just a short time ago at my last attempt. I should add that I cannot find Windows Essentials when I search All Programs. Should I have it, do I need it?

However the install icon is still showing and it says 1 important update selected 156.0 MB (which I thought was the one that has just installed), I can also see 1 optional update which is Windows Powershell 2.0 and WinRM 2.0 for Windows KB968930

I am at a loss to know how to deal with these updates, can you help please?

A:Windows Live Essentials Update Problem

hi Busydee, We need to know definitavley if this is the same update you already have on the machine, so check update number with whats installed.

first off you need to install all updates that come through the update utility, taking note to see if the same update then re-emerges and wants to re install again. then we can talk about failed updates.

Hello! For about the past two years I've been having troubles with Windows Update, and it's pretty much stopped checking for updates and updating in general. I didn't think much of it, but now I feel like it's affecting MSE.

Recently I had an issue with updating it, so I had to uninstall it via the Microsoft Support website because I couldn't uninstall it normally. But when I triy to reinstall it, it gets to about the point where it seems like it's installing, and then it stops and says there was an error with the installation. I've tried just about every suggestion and troubleshooting that the Microsoft website offers me, but nothing seems to be working.

I've ran Malware Bytes, Windows Defender, TDSSKiller, and even Microsoft Security Scanner; nothing detects any malware or spyware, so I'm getting the feeling that something might be corrupted! I made another post more in depth about it here, but I feel like I might not get any good help.

If anyone has any suggestions or solutions, I'd really appreciate it!!

Hi,

I have Windows Vista Home Premium and it is 64 bit. I have been trying to install an update titled "Windows Live Essentials 2011 (KB2434419)" since 19/10/2010 when it was released but I have been unable to, because as soon as I try to do the update I get the message "Error(s) found: Code 800401E4. Windows Update encountered an unknown error".

I have been searching for a solution to this error for months by trawling through other discussions online but have found nothing of use. I really want to get rid of this annoying message. Other updates that have come after this do not work either ("Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows Vista for x64-based systems", "Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2467175)", "Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2467174)").

Something else of note is that there is also an optional update entitled "Realtek driver update for Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller" that will not update either. In any combination of these updates (either both or either one of them selected) the update does not work and the same error message is given.

I was suggested to uninstall Windows Live and reinstall, but this brought to light a different problem: the "Uninstall" feature of the control panel does not appear to be working as whenever I try to click on ANYTHING on that list (be it Wi... Read more

Hello, I previously has Norton on my computer with an expired subscription. A Norton pop up kept appearing, the scan wouldnt run and my laptop kept turning itself off. I uninstalled Norton and the problem with turning off has resolved. I then downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials to use as my virus scanner. It installed OK but would not update. I posted this problem on another forum here: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msestart/thread/84452f5d-bde2-46d9-afbe-4c2a582a4e3b and after following the instructions it started working. However when following those steps I noticed my Windows Update will not update, and hasnt done since May! If I click on update the green bar moves but never gets anywhere, ive left it for 15min+ and it just keeps saying its checking for update. Now Security Essentials is doing the same as before, getting halfway through updating and stopping, and when I go to close it its says its not responsing, as does windows updater.

On the last forum it was suggested there may be underlying issues and after googling my problem I came across this forum which I am now going to use from now on. I dont know anything about computers and have no idea how to go about investigating this myself so any help at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks very much for taking the time to read this.

Have been using this program for months now on windows 10 32 bit, and I get an email saying that MS are making changes to Outlook servers and to patch WLM 2012 and a download link.

I applied the patch and now after a few seconds of being open WLM 2012 crashes while updating the calendar.

Anyone know a fix for this? I have taken the patch off by repairing Windows essentials 2012 from the Programs and features dialog, but anyone know why this patch causes WLM to crash after a few seconds?

Hey peeps, just thought i'd give you all a heads up, got a notification from windows update telling me that there are new updates available, these updates are windows live essentials and microsoft security essentials.

These consist of several programs:

Microsoft security essentials is a new program developed by microsoft which takes a new look at windows defender, there's a new, cleaner interface, new icon, and seems pretty fast after the first quick scan... screenshot below:

live essentials is the same live essentials pack you get from the microsoft live site, not much new here, bing bar is included instead of the live search bar, that is all.

MrNeeds

A:Microsoft Security Essentials - Windows Update

Thanks for the update.

MSE gave me a pop-up advising me there was an upgrade and inviting me to download and install it which I did. To be honest, I really didn't pay enough attention to the program (except when I got it a while back and set it up) so I don't really see much of any difference in the looks. I have noticed it does scan a bit quicker though - so an MS update/upgrade that actually improved things for a change.

I downloaded the whole Essentials 2011 Suite about a week ago or so. I like some of the changes and not some of the others. I preferred the Live Toolbar to the Bing toolbar - you could customize it more and could give more space to the search box (which I can't seem to be able to widen and think it can't be done). I also wish there were a way to turn off the alert just because I have pop-ups enabled - it should allow you to disable alerts for the items you choose to enable so if a real alert occurs you can notice it. While I like WLM better than Windows Mail, I'm still having trouble connecting to one of my newsgroups (but otherwise it works fine) - though I rarely use it except for newsgroups as I use Outlook 2007 instead. I'm on the fence about Messenger. It seems to take up too much of the screen now with details I'm not really interested in (but end up reviewing because they're there). I don't really use the other applications but downloaded them anyway so I'd be able to fire them up to help answer questions about them in the forum.

Recently I installed an update for Windows Live Essentials 2011 (KB2434419), which came with a 'new look' version of Hotmail - Windows Live Mail 2011.

Since then I've had nothing but annoying issues with Hotmail, and it's settings and configurations. Issues which at times have caused parts of it to close down, and which have also created merry hell with the text of the emails.

First of all was this crazy warning message, which appeared each time I opened my Hotmail account:

A check of Problems Reports and Solutions showed that I was experiencing a major difficulty - an APPCRASH with Hotmail, but I didn't have a clue about how to fix it. This is the View of the Problem Details;

After considering the problem and the impasse that I was faced with, I decided to do the following in an attempt to create a 'workaround' of the problem, and to hopefully resolve the issues I was having;

1. I did a System Restore, back to the Restore Point immediately before I had downloaded and installed the latest Windows Updates, including KB2434419 - Update for Windows Live Essentials 2011, of which Windows Live Mail [Hotmail] is only one part.

2. After the Restore Point had been confirmed and my Laptop restarted [Rebooted] I then confirmed with a search of Windows Update, that KB2434419 was ready to reinstall to the Laptop. The Update for Windows Live Mail [Hotmail] was successfully reinstalled.

This method seems to have fixed the APPCRASH issues described above, because the Hot... Read more

A:Latest Windows Live Essentials 2011 Update [KB2434419] has corrupted Hotmail accounts

I've downloaded the full Windows Live Essentials 2011 and Windows Live Mail is a totally separate application from my Hotmail account (at least it is for me). Although my Hotlook account looks a little different, it is essentially the same as it has always been with a few more options (when accessed through the Bing Toolbar which is how I do it). It does NOT open Windows Live Mail 2011. It goes instead to my online Hotline account which is perfectly fine.

Were you previously using a prior version of Windows Live Mail or Windows Mail as the client for your Hotmail account instead of just using the direct online version? Have you tried going to the online version of Hotmail and checking if things are mucked up there or if that's only in Windows Live Mail? I suspect the problem is with Windows Live Mail and not with Hotmail.

I hope this helps. Let me know, and we'll see what we can come up with to fix the problem. Maybe you should consider uninstalling the update and see if that fixes the problem (unless you think that cured the larger problem). In either case, then maybe the best thing to do would be to seek help in the Windows Live Mail Forums where they know a lot more about it than we do.

Good luck!

Hi forum,

I'm having some problem about a week ago with Microsoft security essentials bugging out on me and not opening or updating. Basically the message I got on opening MSE was windows cannot access specified path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the file. Upon reading this about a week ago, I think! I proceeded to foolishly downloading a Zeroroot access program and a few MSE alternatives. Since then I have still been unable to re-install MSE by deleting all components in the registry.

The error code I get with trying to re-install MSE is 0x80070643

Having then unistalled the zeroaccess program and the previous alternative antivirus programs, I still cannot get MSE working, and I now have a windows 7 update error. The new system update I believe may be to do with security as-well!! The error code on doing a windows 7 update is 80070005, and it did cut out at 9% every time. (although now I think it is just 0%)
Can someone please help me as I have had a very successful streak of avoiding viruses by always usin MSE. I don't want, and can't afford to get a virus attack, not to mention Im runnign windows 7 ultimate so I need the windows 7 updates too because the ultimate can be dodgy sometimes. Nb the update I cannot do is 1.4mb but I am anticipating windows will throw me a new update any day soon which could be anywhere from 30mb to 200mb and it could fail all of it leaving me prone to attacks.

I can not get Windows 7 Update to work at all.  I receive a message that the service is currently not running and to restart the computer.  This does nothing.  I have gone into services under "services.msc" and windows update is not listed as running or stopped.

I came across this issue while trying to get Microsoft Security Essentials to update.  I keep getting an error code.  Of course now that I am writing this and try to get the error code to reference, the update works.  The MSE not updating is a chronic problem for me.

I am still fairly new to the forum, so please let me know if there is additional information, or I make a slip-up.

Thank you.

John

A:Windows 7 update and Microsoft Security Essentials not working properly

So is MSE updating now as well as Windows Update? Do you still have the problem or did it somewhat fix itself? If it continues to happen, write down the error code as it is printed on your screen and post it here.

Does anybody have any idea why Microsoft would offer the Bing Bar as an optional update, I installed it, but thought it was kind of weird for them to be offering it to us through Windows Update, as when I tried it I did it manual from the internet

A:New Optional Update from Microsoft

Hello Techtitan,

If you already had the Bing Bar toolbar installed, then it would see updates for it in Windows Updates if you had the "Give me updates for other Microsoft products....." setting checked.

OR

If you had the Show me detailed notifications when new Microsoft software is available setting checked.

Updates: frequently asked questions

Quote:
Software notifications will periodically let you know about new programs that can enhance your experiences with your computer and the Internet. You can choose to receive detailed notification messages letting you know when a new program is available for download and installation. When you get a notification, you can review what's being offered, and get more details. You can install the programs if you like what you see. The notification will appear for a limited time, and you can close it if you're not interested.

Hope this helps.

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue that I just noticed today. Originally, when I would click on links in Google, I would get redirected to some random advertisement site. That was a red flag to me, so I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and went ahead and deleted whatever it found. Then, I started noticing that my Microsoft Security Essentials is not working. It says "Security Essentials is not monitoring your computer because the program's service stopped. You should restart it now." When I click to start it, I get the following message: "Couldn't start the Security Essentials service. The specified service does not exist as an installed service. Error code: 0x80070424." This raised another alarm for me as that usually is a sign of an infection, I believe. I then went to my control panel to check on Windows Update and noticed that the icon for it is just the red shield thing with an X in it. When I click to check for updates, I get: "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I also noticed a little bubble on the Windows Update screen that says, "Find out more about free software from (null). Click here for details." I can't say that I've ever seen that there before, so it's a bit suspicious. Lastly, when I go to check on Windows Firewall, I see it in red and saying "Windows Firewall is not using the recommended settings to ... Read more

Microsoft lists this as an optional update. I am running Windows 7 upgrade over Vista and have had a lot of problems with permissions and so am disgusted with Microsoft right now and leery of installing any more of their crappy software.

Is Silverlight the typical Microsoft crap or something you think I should install?

A:Microsoft Optional Update Silverlight - yes or no?

The critical and hardware Microsoft Updates are very necessary. Silverlight enhances some Internet video playback. I view Netflix streaming video. Without installing Silverlight, I couldn't do this viewing. If you use Windows Live, Silverlight is necessary for those features, When you upgraded to Windows 7 over Vista, you should have backed up your files and deleted the Vista partition on the hard drive at the start of the Windows 7 install

I am on top of all downloads. However, I keep getting a notice than an update is available to download. When I check, it is always Live Essentials. I didn't know what it was, so I went on line to check it out. I'm not interested.
Query: how can I let Microsoft to stop sending me those daily (or more) notifications that this update is available. I have been all over the help on my computer. As you may well imagine, even given the fact that I am a total non-techie, I couldn't find anything that remotely addressed my issue.
I am hoping that the Forum can help me.

I downloaded Windows Live Essentials for the messenger but now I would like to unistall it. I went to Uninstall/Change Programs in my control panel to uninstall it and I noticed a program called Windows Live Mesh activex control for remote connections. What is that for? and can I uninstall that as well? My dilemma here is that I cannot seem to uninstall Windows Live Essentiials. I double clicked on it in the Uninstall/Change Programs list and and was given a window that gave me the options:
1)remove one or more Windows Live Programs
2)Repair all Windows Live Programs

I clicked on the first option but it never let me choose which programs to uninstall. It just quickly flashed a window that said "uninstalling" and then it showed me "Done! Your programs you selected have been uninstalled." I didn't get to select anything to uninstall though. In the end, Windows Live essential is still installed and I can't get rid of it.

Any suggestions guys?

A:Uninstalling Windows Live Essentials and windows live mesh activex control for remote connections

Someone else will have to advise you regarding Windows Live Mesh. I know nothing about that. For Windows Live Essentials: If you cannot remove WLE using add remove programs try Revo Uninstaller. If I remember correctly it will not ask which components you want to remove. Here is how to use Revo Uninstaller: 1) First we download it from here: Revo Uninstaller Free Version. Scroll down the page for the free version download. You can skip this Step if you already have it installed. However, you may need to update it. If you have it installed already, and you need to update it, go ahead and open it up and click the AutoUpdate Icon next to Help. The use of this program makes registry changes based upon what you select for removal from the Registry. Before running Revo Uninstaller please run ERUNT before proceeding to back up your registry in case you make a mistake. 2) Select the Program to remove from the list of programs and click the Uninstall button: 3) After selecting the program you want to remove, and confirming you want to uninstall the program, then you will want to select the Advanced Option: 4) Click Next. This will start the uninstaller for the application you picked. When the uninstaller is done, and it proves to be successful, and a reboot is required, then select NO and continue the below steps. 5) Follow the prompts during the uninstallation of the application. Once it closes you will be at this window: 6) Click Next again. Once the window is do... Read more

Is anyone else experiencing a problem with their Windows Live Mail after today's Microsoft Update?

I'm running Windows 7, x64-Edition on an Acer Aspire 5750. This morning all was well, I was able to use my Windows Live Mail successfully without any problems.

After the Microsoft Update (KB2670838) and restart this afternoon, the program appears to be very much messed up! The E-Mail Account "tree" down the left hand side of the program - when new mail is received no is no longer ledgeable - i.e. the number count updates but appears as though multiple numbers are printed on the same spot. Scrolling up and down the Account "tree" only makes the jumble appear like a mash of scribbles as the program fails to scroll but instead smears the characters as it scrolls.

Also the background colour is now black!!?? What's going on?!?! How can I undo this change. I've just tried to reinstall WLM but that has not fixed or solved the problem.

See attached screen shot from the program... It's now virtually unusable.

This is a actually a sub-thread under a separate discussion on the Windows Updates forum.

In connection with an inability to receive and install Vista updates-in-general over the past three days, it seems that I cannot update the definitions specific to Microsoft Security Essentials. The last automatic update of MSE was July 12, and attempting to download virus and spyware definitions right from the MSE panel now fails unconditionally.

Anyone else with this problem, or anyone with experience in doing some sort of 'manual install' to get around what may be a temporary hiccup in Microsoft Updates for Vista?

Running Vista-64 bit on a Dell desktop; using MSE version 4.9.218.0. Thanks!

Hello again eloctrojim. I seem to be the only forum regular who is using MSE 4.9.218.0, and no I do not have this problem - perhaps because my Windows updates for the month of July were all successfully installed on Tuesday, whereas your system is still choking on them.

Try this: set Windows Update to "never check for updates." If you have disabled a Windows service, re-enable it. Restart the PC, then open MSE and try to manually update definitions via its Update tab (not by checking for Windows updates). Assuming this works, it might be a good time to try the solution for Windows updates suggested in your other thread.

MSE's 1 time per day updating is puzzling to me. MSE says it's "up to date", even if there are updates waiting for it to download at the next check. That doesn't make sense to me? If MSE only needs 1 update a day to be "up to date", then why does MS put out 2,3,4 updates per day???

Why doesn't MS put out 1 update a day, and then MSE could download that update, and it would truly be "up to date" each day. MS feels that multiple daily updates are essential (or they wouldn't produce them), yet they program their AV to work the vast majority of the time, "out of date".

Something seems wrong here.

A:Microsoft Security Essentials Update Concern

I'd find it annoying if MSE kept saying that it was out of date two-four times a day! A comparison is MBAM (free version), it considers itself to be up to date if it is updated once in every 7 days.

I suspect most of this has to do with MSE staying fully optional to avoid court cases from competitors.

Besides, you can always set MSE to check for updates before it goes into scanning.

i recently formatted my hard drive and reinstalled my OS and then installed Microsoft Security Essentials. Everything was working very well, I was able to install Windows Updates etc, but then started getting the 0x80070002 error when trying to update MSE. I've done searches all over the web and nothing has helped. I did discover that if I turn the "Windows Update" service to either Manual or Automatic, instead of Automatic-Delayed Start it will update fine. However if it's set to Automatic and I reboot the machine it reverts back to Automatic Delayed start. If I change it to manual and then reboot it will stay on manual, however I don't think that's an ideal situation being then Windows Updates don't update automatically.

One disadvantage of Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is that it uses Windows Update to update the virus definition files. If you disabled the Windows update for some reasons MSE won?t update anymore.
The MSE Update Utility can be used here to update MSE even if Windows Update is disabled.

A:Microsoft Security Essentials Update Utility

Why in the world are you disabling Windows Update? Just set it to "Never check for updates" if you want to manually do it. But disabling Windows Update altogether is just stupid, honestly. Might as well not even run an antivirus if you turn off your first line of defense.

A:microsoft securty essentials & win defender update issues

Well, I have ZERO faith in Microsoft anti-malware software, so you can guess what my recommendation would be: use different (and better!) software.

I installed MSE recently just to have another scanner (disabled active protection as I already have one), but I don't use it as my primary anti-malware. If you're having trouble reinstalling it, use something else instead.

You may already be infected, and that's why you can't update the software (a testament to the quality of MSE!). Or it may just be a screwy software/driver/OS issue that would only be fixed by a reinstall of the OS. We'll likely never know.

My recommendation: forget about MSE and WD, and get better anti-malware software (there are plenty of good free ones, just ask around), and use them instead of the Microsoft ones.

Avira, Avast!, SUPER Antispyware, Malwarebytes, AVG....these are all good programs to use.

MSE is still in version 1.0

The programs I listed have been around for a lot longer than MSE, and have a good reputation.

There's my 2 cents.

Thereafter, I was notified to install an optional update for the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250. Ever since then, I go through days of getting a green video window for Facebook and sometimes youtube videos (but 90% with Facebook videos).

The update is called:
nvidia - Graphics adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Other hardware - NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M.
After installing it, whenever my laptop tries to use the Nvidia card, I get a blue screen and the system restarts.
I looked in installed updates to uninstall it, and it is not there.
I did a system restore to four days before I installed it, and I still get the same effect. Lastly, I installed some older nvidia drivers that used to work using the clean install option, and I still have this problem.

A:Optional update in windows update is giving me a blue screen.

It looks as though the update changed something in nvlddmkm.sys, and for some reason, it wasn't changed back when I did the system restore. I have no idea how to go about fixing it.

Recently, a Windows update arrived called “Microsoft Security Essentials Client Update Package - KB2544035”. Since then my computer started malfunctioning. Whenever, I try to install the update, everything goes fine, and then suddenly goes blank and the desktop returns (but the Windows update screen had closed). When I open Windows update, it shows that the aforesaid update is not installed. And when I try to open Microsoft Security Essentials shortcut on my desktop, the machine is not able to find it and asks to delete it. I can’t even open Microsoft Security Essentials manually from Program files. Things return to normal on System Restore. But the Microsoft Security Essentials appears ‘potentially unprotected’ and asks for a full system scan. But before the scan is complete the Microsoft Security Essentials screen closes and the desktop returns once again. And, once again, when I try to open Microsoft Security Essentials shortcut on my desktop, the machine is not able to find it.

This problem has occurred twice already, and I’m very frustrated. I tried to full system scan in Safe Mode and that has not helped.

Please help.

I've been doing alot of tweaking and downloading the last few days, so it could be anything. i wanted to check Microsoft update because for whatever reason, Live Messenger was not logging on and SkyDrive wasn't accessible on my laptop, when both work fine on my desktop. i tried to get to Microsoft update through Google, the link in my start menu, and even the link on the Microsoft homepage but they all ended up on Google with the URL staying as "http://update.microsoft.com/". and it did this with both Chrome and IE7. also, for the last couple days, when i directly double click on the "(C:)" drive, an error pops up about not being able to find some "RECYCLER\S-1-1-14-100023495-100021663-100017297-4700.com" file, but when i type in "C:\" in the address bar, it gets there just fine. also, when i right click on "(C:)" i have the option to AutoPlay, and when i click "open" it asks me what program i would like to use to open "the file C:\". i am currently running an Avast virus scan, but it's a free program so i don't think it will get me very far... help would be greatly appreciated! oh and some programs i have been installing and uninstalling are Gladinet, windows live messenger from "http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Chat/Instant-Messaging/Windows-Live-Messenger-9.shtml" because the actual Microsoft site wasn't working (was told it was a broken link), VLC Media Player, Avast, F... I was downloading a file and Microsoft Security Essentials popped up with an alert about a potential threat. When I opened the pop-up, I was told there was a Severe threat Trojan and it was recommended to clean the computer to remove the Trojan. I allowed the program to remove the file. Shortly after I noticed while websurfing I kept being redirected to strange search sites and product sites. This only occurs when I am following a link resulting from a search engine query. There is no redirect when I copy the address directly into my browser. I thought maybe there was another virus so I ran Malwarebytes and after a full system scan there were no reported threats. I decided to update Microsoft Security Essentials because it originally detected this virus. Maybe the Virus Definitions were out of date... Anyway, I am unable to get the updates because the program keeps giving me an error message that I should check my internet connections and try again. I also keep getting Internet Explorer connection issues while web sites are trying to load. Some sites are taking forever to load and then fail. When I diagnose connection issues, the only helpful advise I get is to consult my owners manual...In the meanwhile I am able to use numerous other programs that require internet connections and aren't having any problem with them. I use a broadband connection and have full signal right now. I'm not sure if the Redirect problem and the connection/updates problem are connected, but ... Read more

I can not locate optional updates downloaded from Windows Update site and "confirmed" as successfully installed. I checked on View installed updates in the Program and Features caption in the Control Panel. The updates that are there are those categorized as Critical, High Priority or Important. The rest of those categorized as Optional are nowhere to be found, though confirmed as successfully installed in the View Update History in the Windows Update site. Can anyone please help.

Hello, I'm confused about Windows 8.1 Optional Update. There are 2 updates in optional tab. Should I update those files ? What would happen after I update ? I'm confused because those are not Important updates but Optional.

Here is the screenshot.

Thank You!

A:Windows 8.1 Optional Update

I always do as these are fixes for non-critical problems and will keep your system at optimum performance. I would do KB2962409 first as that was released in June, then do the KB2967917 which is a July update.

Does anyone know if Microsoft is going to replace Windows Live Essentials as I heard on a cnet message forum administrator that Microsoft will no longer offer that suite or programs?

I used to use Windows Live Writer to blog but I needed more features, especially with uploading a set of pictures to a gallery in a post as if it were being uploaded to WordPress' gallery themselves.

Windows Live Mail and Live Writer have been awesome and since Windows Live Messenger was replaced by Skype, is it possible for Microsoft to replace Live Writer, Live Mail and other Live products?

A:Windows Live Essentials

I heard a while back that MS was dropping the "Live" branding on their products and I think they were re branding a lot of stuff with the "MSN" brand. Time will tell.

Hello everyone...
Love you, hope you can help me,
I have been using Windows Live Essentials for a long time, until i started to have issues with it (many of them), so i have moved on to alternative software. (For e-mails i use strictly IncrediMail now, happy with it).
One of the issues was with Family Safety app - i installed it, used it, moved on to Norton Parental Control, the problem is every time i removed Family safety from my live account it kept coming back (just like in old horror movies), instead of Jason X i got Family Safety X, how bout Family Safety VS Norton Parental Control for a nice horror flick?
So i had to msconfig and just disable it there 9 not really a solution)
My major issue is that i can not uninstall Windows Live Essentials, and i have tried everything. Could not do it from control panel add remove programs, could not do it with the original install file, there is just no such option.

What should i do, i really want to get rid of it.

Thanks a lot in advance...

I am trying to uninstall Windows Live Essentials. I have tried to uninstall it through the control panel but that doesn't work. Windows live mail crashes every time I try to open an email with an attachment that can only be opened by windows live mail. So I figured that if I could remove the entire suite of windows live essentials and then reinstall it I could fix the problem. Other than using a big hammer I wonder how I can ever remove windows live essentials. Any help would be appreciated.

You can try Microsoft Fixit. Start HERE:Fix problems with programs that can't be installed or uninstalled Click Run Now/RunAfter accepting there will be a very quick scan. When that is finsihed choose Detect problems and let me select the fixes to apply. You will be presented with 2 options: Installing and Uninstalling. Make your choice. Scroll to the list and choose Windows Live Essentials and follow the steps which will guide you through the process. Hopefully this will work.

2. Is there a standalone messenger version for 2010 or 2011 and where can i download it from. Without the essential package

When thinking about it will i still get that shitty essential package again with a standalone version of msn messenger, reason why i'm saying this is because a friend of mine recently installed msn messenger and he got the essential package and what annoys me is why is microsoft bundling programs together...

With the recent advent of MS sending out "tracking updates" for Windows 7 users, I have become leery of any updates including this one which is optional. Not very much info and pretty ambiguous.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3083324

A:Windows Optional Update (KB3083324)

I pretty much hide all optional updates and only do Security Updates. As far as Optional Updates go, I look through each and decide if I really need it. For instance I did not install an optional update regarding the Russian Ruble or Lithuanian currency.

I do not understand what Microsoft is doing with these Windows Update Client updates. KB3075851 was for August and now they are pushing another for September? I update fine and hide these Client updates. I also make sure I check Do not install updates, only notify me and I uncheck Give me Recommended updates the same way I receive important updates.

I opened up and saw the windows update options which included:
- Cumulative security update for IE9 kb2809289 (27Mb) (ticked by default)
- IE10 (69.1Mb) (unticked by default)

Would be ok to untick the ie9 update and tick the ie10 - which would mean that windows update will uninstall ie9 and install ie10?

A:Optional windows update IE10 and IE9

I found out why IE10 update option was unticked by default. It happens to need a platform update installed first which can cause problems. I'll let IE9 be for the meantime.

I know there has been discussion on this before but I am confused. I downloaded the update some time ago and got messages in Window Live Mail that I was not authorised and had tried too many times to log on so my account was blocked! I could get into Live Mail but my Contacts were not available any more. Fed up, I restored my computer to an earlier time.
I want to resize photos so, on advice I found, I did a selective update of Windows Live Essentials for just the Photo Program. However, the whole update installed itself and the Live Mail was defective again. I'm now back to a new restore point but still want the Photo Program. I am running AVG Anti-Virus protection.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Go to the Start orb and in the search type in appwiz.cpl and hit enter. Choose to Change the Live Essentials and choose to just uninstall Live Mail and leave everything else. If that doesn't work uninstall all of Essentials, and then reinstall it, but this time in the What to Install Window uncheck Live Mail part of the program.

Hi,
I wanted to download Windows Live Essentials. Although I have disabled firewall and all the antiviruses. Yet I get this message. How do I successfully download?

A:Downloading Windows Live Essentials

Hello rin,

First off, you should only ever have a single antivirus software as multiple antiviruses will get in the way of each other and cause havook in your system. in addition, if you were to uninstall any of them, you would need to use a special uninstaller tool, usually given out for free by the same company who makes the antivirus software.

There are various security softwares that you can use in additon to an antivirus, but only ever have a single antivirus at any one time.

Now, are you able to connect to the internet without any problems? Can you restart the computer and try again?

However, when I try I can't bring up the windows which would enable me to do so. I get a pop up that says that I have updates to install. One is Windows Live Essentials 2011. When I try to download it, I get a msg that says: " Couldn't install programs. You already have different build flavor of Windows Live." Then under help I get " \If you want to install this version, first uninstall the version on your computer." I checked and Windows Live Essentials 2011 KB2434419 is listed several times as follows: Failed 10/21, successful 10/21, successful 10/27, successful 10/28. The pop up also has Error: 0x80280008.

If Live is already installed, why do I get an update notice? Do I need to uninstall all the other downloads? I have a folder Windows Live but no sub-folder or other folder that shows Live Essentials. Windows Live shows 30 updates over the last month or so. Do I need to uninstall the Windows Live Program. I have an uninstall program, Revo Uninstaller, that shows a Windows Live Essentials Program. Should I uninstall it? Basically, how many of these should I uninstall? Or how can I get the notice to download to stop appearing?

Thanks!

I usually use Skype, but sometimes I use Windows Live Messenger. One day, I saw a newer version of this program, so here's what I did:
1) I downloaded the newest version
2) Installed.
When I was installing it, it deleted the old version. When I was installing the new version it installed in about 0.000000001 second. I was like: WT* . But when I click Close, nothing opens (The installation said, that if I click close, it will open). Then I opened Start --> Clicked All Programs --> Searched for a folder named Windows Live or something --> Found it --> Empty.

What should I do?

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Which site did you download the updated version from?

Was it a genuine Microsoft site?

Something certainly doesn't sound right so I'd be inclined to run an anti-virus scan, and then use Microsoft's system restore to a point in time before you downloaded the update.

Malwarebytes is pretty good for this job.

A:Windows Live Essentials 2011

The correct way to remove AVG 2011 is through its program folder via Start > All Programs or by using Add/Remove Programs / Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7.If for some reason the AVG uninstall failed using the normal method of Add/Remove, download and run the latest AVG installation file as described here. As noted on that page, do not use the AVG Removal tool which is intended for versions prior to 2011. When the AVG Installer windows appears choose the option to Remove and click Continue to allow the AVG 2011 uninstaller to run. Restart the computer when done.As a last resort you can use the uninstall/cleanup utility (AVG Remover) provided in AVG 2011+9.0+8.x Uninstall/Re-Install Instructions. After restarting and removing the folders, stop where instructed to Stop here if not re-installing.AVG Remover eliminates all the parts of your AVG installation from your computer, including registry items, installation files, user files, etc. AVG Remover is the last option to be used in case the AVG uninstall / repair installation process has failed repeatedly.AVG Download Tools: AVG RemoverIMPORTANT NOTE: Before removing your existing anti-virus, you should download and save the setup file for the anti-virus you are going to replace it with. After doing that, disconnect from the Internet, uninstall your current anti-virus, reboot and then install the replacement. Reboot again to ensure it is working properly before reconnecting to the Internet.

Hi...
I'm relatively new to Win 7 Home Premium (64-bit) and have just discovered it doesn't include Windows Movie Maker which was on XP.
However, I noticed online Windows Movie Maker 2.6 is supposed to work with the above.
It downloaded fine but when I went into 'All Programs' and clicked on Windows Movie Maker, nothing happened.
I noticed also the icon next to it was a blank one and not a 'Windows' one.
Checking Add/Remove (I actually use Revo) the program was definitely installed.
Nevertheless, I uninstalled then reinstalled. No joy. I then uninstalled it completely.
I then noticed Windows Live Essentials contains the Movie Maker.
I selected only the 'Photo & Movie Maker' from the list and downloaded.
However, the same thing happened as with Windows Movie Maker 2.6. Also, same blank icon.
I must be missing something simple here.
Can anyone help?
Many thanks

A:Windows Live Essentials - not working?

Hello kwil

I have movie maker 2.6 installed and running fine here (same OS) and have the live essentials version also, what is strange is your having problems with other newly installed programs also. Where did you get the download from - Download: Windows Movie Maker 2.6 - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details
Any other recent problems installing programs.
Maybe a quick SFC scan and malware scan also for starters - SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

after installing windows live essentials, i lost partial use of my dvd drive...i can burn to it, but can not read from it...when a disc is inserted it makes a whirring sound like its going to do something but nothing happens...everything looks as it should - the cd/dvd shows up in device manager (says working properly) and when i go to update driver i'm told my device is up to date...i'm using a sony vaio, windows 7 64-bit (i noticed that my dvd driver says 32-bit - don't know if this matters???)...i've looked online for a resolution but nothing seems to be of any help for my specific problem or too technical for me to understand...any ideas on how to easily fix this problem? i've been 8 days without it and am getting really frustrated. thanks.

Hello Seven Forums,

I started out with Win7Pro that just had Windows Live Mail. Then came along Windows Live Mail Essentials 2011 which reported to the greatest thing since the wheel. However I really do not like the program, especialy the NAG to long into Windows Live using my ID etc. I have not been able to remove that NAG so I want to remove the essentials part but KEEP the garden variety of Windows Live Mail. 6 moths ago I did this but it removed windows live mail so had to download it from Microsoft and re-install it, so I would like a better uninstall so as to keep windows live Mail only. Can anyone suggest a simple way to do that. I have exported what messages I want to keep along with my address book.

I would appreciate any help with this. I have another question but is unrelated so will post another message for that question.

Windows seven forum has been a great help to me in the past, thanks to all.

You download Windows Live Mail as a single application here: Windows Live Mail 2011

It'll download the installer first then you just need to click "Choose the programs you want to install", and then deselect the apps you don't want.

How can I do this completely?
I ask because I have uninstalled the programme via the Control Panel but when I try to reinstall I am getting various errors , some of which refer to updating the junk filter which is in the Windows Live Mail.
I imagine that with a clean uninstall that this error would not appear .
But would a 100% clean uninstall mean the loss of all my emails?

thanks

If you don't want the junk filter, stop using Email & revert to writing letters.

I keep getting messages to update my Microsoft - do I need or want either Silverlight or Windows Live Essentials??? TIA

A:Windows Live Essentials and Silverlight

If these are coming up through Windows Update, you need to update Silverlight (a browser plugin), but installing Windows Live Essentials is optional. You can right-click and "Hide update" if you don't want a particular update to show up again.Live Essentials has some decent software in it, but if you don't want it, feel free to decline it.Silverlight should stay up to date, however, so let that one install.

Having so much trouble with this at a loss how to solve it.
Have live mail but it doesn't work. There are so many problems don't know where to start. Basically the problem is that it will not send or receive mail. Every time it is tried get a Logon (server needs this info) window that asks for username (which is, it seems, only partially filled in. Ends at where the @ would appear ) Put down the password but the same logon window keeps reappearing. Don't know if any explanations will help. Need a tech to get into it to see if there is anything wrong but remote access is worrisome.
