Skype on a new Dell computer

Q: Skype on a new Dell computer

I am helping a friend who has a Dell Inspiron N5105 laptop running Vista Home Premium.

It was supplied only recently as part of an insurance claim settlement - she was told it had just been built for her specifically so she expected it to be problem free.

The internet works fine and she can check her email and facebook, etc - but although Skype 4.2 is pre-installed she cannot logon to the service using her ID and password, and neither can I, it just says for ages "Signing in" and eventually "Skype cannot connect to your account - for help click here" but that link doesn't work either.

She has asked for a password reset and logged onto the Skype website to complete this successfully, but the client still does the above - and the same with my own account.

Also, the screen to activate her copy of MS Office XP is corrupted (just showing as blank box!).

To try to resolve both problems, I backed up her files (only a few) and did a factory reset from the recovery partition. The Skype problem remains.

The Office activation wizard now offers to activate over the internet ... but says it can't make a connection to the server, and when I try to use the telephone method it refuses to give us a phone number to call.

I have connected the laptop to a different internet connection and the problems remain.

She tells me that her boss is also unable to activate the latest version of Office that they have too, so this isn't just a Office XP issue (which I realise is 10 years old).

Everything worked perfectly on her old computer, but of course it was stolen in the burglary.

I am at a loss to explain why this is happening with a brand new computer, especially after a factory reset. Can you help me ?

A similar story to a few other posts. Very low volume outgoing using the internal Mic in a Skype call.- Brand new XPS15 9530- Immediate upgrade to Win 10- Windows update and Dell updates applied and up to date- Audio drivers show Realtek HD Audio, Skype up to date.
Skype microphone showing very low volume even with all settings to max (+30db, 100%). Calls to Test Call return nothing or very quiet voice. Control panel, Sounds, Recording shows almost no movement in the display unless you shout or tap the Mic area above the screen. Playing with all the various enhancement options both in Control panel, Sounds, Recording and Dell Audio don't seem to have any effect. However I think I've seen "Listen to this device" and Voice Recorder work fine. A possible temporary fix is to go to Control Panel, Device manager, Sound Video and Games controllers, Update Driver, Browse, Pick and choose the generic High Definition Audio Device. This is not really a long term solution but does seem to work correctly.I'm not certain yet whether the problem is Dell hardware, Windows 10, Skype or the Realtek drivers. But more or less out of the box the combination seems to be currently broken and unusable. Please investigate and find a fix. It should not be hard to duplicate the problem.

Hello, I hope someone on here can help me with this issue. Ok here it goes... I just bought this used laptop. I bought it so I could speak to friends & family on Skype. Before buying the laptop the previous owner was attempting to connect to his wireless internet connection & it would pick up the signal and then loose the internet connection. The computer seemed as if it would freeze for a few seconds when attempting to open up the Internet Explorer browser. The screen was blank and a swirling circle would show next to the pointer. Seemed as it was a bad internet connection or at least that's what he told me. After a few tries we got it connected to the internet and I bought it.

I assumed Internet Explorer 8 was crappy so I downloaded Google Chrome. The speed on the laptop really picked up and it rarely gave me any slow or freezing issues only when I used Google Chrome.

NOW... I downloaded Skype and soon after I tried using it as the laptop comes with an integrated camera. When I double click the Skype Icon on my desktop the Skype window opens for a second and closes immediately. I have to try and open the program 2 to 4 times for Skype to open and get me to the sign in section. Once signed in I attempt to add contacts & not even 5 seconds into it the program freezes. It says program not responding & a screen pops up which says Skype not responding close window. I never get to use Skype and I'm not sure if it's a non sufficient space issue ... Read more

Please DELL update the shipped Realtek sound driver for Dell Inspiron 7737 and others that have this problem to the needed version "Realtek High Definition Audio Version" instead of "Realtek High Definition Audio Version" or lower!

Finally fixed this. NONE of the solutions above worked for me. I have an Dell Inspiron 7737 that has Realtek High Definition audio. The latest drivers from DELL or latest I could download from Realtek site ("Realtek High Definition Audio Version" / "Realtek High Definition Audio Version") didn't make a difference. Skype microphone was not usable (I had to literally speak in the microphone - 1 cm away to be usable).

PREVIOUS ANNOYING SOLUTION (just in case the real solution doesn't work for everyone): previously I went in device manager, update driver, "let me choose" / "pick from available"... then selected "High definition audio" - so the generic driver from Microsoft. That fixed the problem but realtek specific things like jack sensing didn't work anymore so it was annoying. Also every now and then (when windows update happened I think) it reverted back to the broken Realtek driver and had to do this all over again or simply choose "rollback driver" once instead of update and then it would pin the driver to the generic "High definition audio" one.

SOLUTION: install this driver that is not available o... Read more

Hi everyone,
I am having a problem with the Realtek microphone in Skype.
The symptoms are as follows:
Shortly after beginning of the conversation the other party cannot hear my voice. Video is fine, the voice of the other party is also fine.
When this happens the microphone green bar in Options/audio settings will not be seen when speaking into it.
However I can hear what's spoken into the microphone in the local speakers.
I uninstalled the microphone in manager, re-installed the driver, did not help.
Uninstalled the Realtek hi-def audio driver. This helped first but then after 4 minutes talking the problem returned again.
I can see that when this happens the speaker icon in
Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\manage audio devices\recording\microphone\microphone properties\levels
is crossed out. If I uncross it and put boost and level above zero the other party can hear me again.
This happens spontaneously, by itself. Even without Skype running, so this is why I think it might be a driver problem.
Any ideas? (please no "reinstalled driver" advice - has done so multiple times)

A:Realtek Microphone/audio driver fails in Skype on 2015 DELL Inspiron 15 7000 series

Methinks it is solved. Ran malware bytes, cleaned up stuff, rebooted.

I noticed that skype has send to all skype contacts a certain link, to one contact even multiply links.
this all happens on the same day: 17th december from 14:30 -14:39.
I haven't seen any spam send anymore after that.
Skype support told me to reset my password, I did, and to download safety scanner from microsoft. they proviced me with the link.
when I try to open the link, the browser cannot load the page, it is stuck in a loop:  sometimes I see a page, but just for a second or even less, then mostly white page, and browser keeps trying to load the page. and in chrome : a  little shield symbol on the right side of the address bar says that it's trying to load scripts from unauthenticated sources. this message dissappears very quickly.
I have skype installed on two laptops, and on my smartphone (iphone).
The problem I told about, is on one laptop that has no antivirus. I did not yet checked the other laptop, if the microsoft page opens or not. but I do have bitdefender internet security (paid) installed on the second laptop.
I want to be sure the laptop that has the problem, is virusfree.

A:spam send in skype account to all skype contacts - cannot load page safety scan

I downloaded the safety scanner from microsoft from my other laptop without any issue.
copied it to a usb, put it on the problem laptop, a full scan and nothing found.
I realize I did had a antivirus paid version (kaspersky internet securuity) on the laptop, as I first said that it had no antivirus.
I only disabled it because it had problems running.
Now I enabled it, updated it and run a full scan. nothing found.
I don't know if skype is the cause and not a virus?  the skype workers told me that the cause could be anything (email, virus on computer).
I mostly use skype on iphone, and here I'm confused with what the skype workers said: one said that iphone can not be infected, so no need to check the iphone.
an other said: you can download an app from app store to scan for viruses, because it is possible that the virus is on the iphone.
This is really not clear anymore.

I have 8.1. I installed Skype in my typical folders of "c:\programs" (I never install in "program files" unless program is forced to do so. All associated files should be, as they are coded, in "C:\Users\main\AppData\Roaming\Skype."My question....Will uninstalling the Metro Skype from its (memory hogging, fake) desktop affect, in anyway, my actual Skype (including logs)?Thank you.I reply as fast as I can, but it could be hours or months. Well for starters you shouldn't really install two versions of Skype on the same PC.Uninstall both, then install the version you prefer.Accept the default install location as I can see no good reason for doing otherwise.

I've experienced some problems and discomfort with skype for win8:
- not able to show screen,
- terrible design,
- very slow response (i.e. when I click RMB, the menu shows up in several seconds, and I expect to see it immideately),
- doesn't understand links to skype chat like skype:?chat&blob=blahblahblah, when I click it nothing happens.

I've also tried skype for desktop, it was even worse:
- when I changed online status to invisible (i've also tried with N/A), skype stopped to receive and send messages,
- when this or another error occurs, I try to kill skype process via task manager, TM then firstly says that skype is not responding (so i am trying to kill process), after that TM stops responding as well.
So when i've tried skype for desktop i had to reboot my laptop about 5 times in a day.

Now I've installed skype from Store back, but I still need to go to skype chat.

Could anyone please help me either make skype 5.x/6.x work on win8, or enter the chat which i need?

Here's my system:

Thanks in advance!

Since this is the General Discussion section, I thought I would ask this question. The reason I am asking is that I have Skype and a Yahoo Group and I can use Skype to share my screen to help teach them or show them what to do in our software and have chats. A couple of my Yahoo Group members said that Skype does something funny to their computer (I notice that it changes my Windows settings if I have personalized them). One of my members says that her son (computer guru) said Skype hacked her computer.

I would like more information, if possible, before encouraging more Yahoo Group members to join for chatting.

Thank you.

A:Can Skype hack a computer?

I'm using it since many years and never had any problem with it, it didn't touched anything outside of itself, nor I ever heard of anyone that has those problems neither. I'm more tempted to think that there is "something else" doing those rather than Skype itself.
How did they come to the conclusion that Skype was the problem?

Has anyone any ideas why the computer screen freezes when using Skype with webcam? Only re-boot solves the problem, but it re-occurs each time a video voip call is made to a Skype contact.

A:Skype freezing computer

Try disabling your firewall and/or antivirus software when making a video call. Also make sure you have enough memory installed since video applications are generally considered to be memory hogs.

I have an issue with Skype. A couple of months ago I removed it, but I also always search after a removal with Agent ransack and Reg Seeker to make sure I get every bit of the removed program off my comp.

So anyways, after I removed it this way, ever since then my computer takes forever to shut down. If I click Start/Shutdown then it takes about 2-3 mins before it pops up the shutdown, restart or whatever screen. No biggie. I got used to that.

But NOW I tried to reinstall Skype to speak with my dad and when I try to download the new version it tells me it can't uninstall the old 3.5 version and then gives me a fatal error screen, both seen here:

and then this

As far as I know I have removed EVERY last trace of Skype from my computer but when I do a HiJackthis scan I get this listing:

I can't get rid of it no matter what I try and I think itis giving me issues and maybe also the reason I can't install the new skype. Just the fact that I can't get rid of it is highly suspect to me in the first place.

Can somebody please help me with this issue. Have you seen this before. I hate anything being on my computer that I can't get rid of and this is the only one ever in 4 years that I can not erase so it is really stubborn. Grrrrrrrrrr....

thanks for any input

BTW, I am running a Laptop Compaq Presarrio 2500 US with 60 gig HD, 2.6 ghrtz clock and 512 ram with Windows XP Pro service pack 2 if this helps.

Ok guys I'm having an issue getting my bluetooth headset to go live within win7, specifically Skype.

Everything registers in Skype for the bluetooth, but no audio is heard or given, so I'm assuming there is an issue in the control panel some where.

I have the Jabra Go 6430, it connects to my cell phone (iPhone) & softphone(Skype) its a brand new headset that came out a couple of weeks ago & I'm really impressed with the overall quality.

The rep at Jabra said I should be able to also hear audio from WMP through it & that if I can configure the system with WMP, skype should fall into place.

So is anyone familiar with setting up bluetooth headsets in win7?

This is a weird one. I installed Skype on my laptop in Win8 and shortly thereafter strange stuff began to happen, for instance my cd tray popped out. At the time I had no idea what was going on and shrugged it off. But then I lost the touchscreen and that bugged me. I have dual boot with Win7 and the touchscreen disappeared on there too. I tried all my old tricks to try to resurrect it booting up back and forth between Win8 & Win 7 the touch would come back for a while and then disappear. Finally on a hunch I started uninstalling recently installed programs. I uninstalled Fanspeed, no difference. When uninstalled Skype my touchscreen came back as good as new! On both OSes. coincidence?

A:Skype killed touchscreen on my computer

try scanning for viruses,
the popped-up cd tray means a program is accessing your optical drive but cannot find any disc.
why the symptom appears on W7 too? because the virus (maybe) also infect the Windows 7 drive.

It is more than annoying that Skype takes all my phone numbers in my address book and on anything on my PC that appears in phone number format and converts it to a Skype link. I did not authorize this and it's ridiculous because if you are not careful when looking to copy a phone number, connects the link and starts making a call you don't want to make.

I went to the pathetic "support forums" on Skype where you can't find anything useful and Skype has no actual, legitimate customer support.

All I want to do is unsync Skype from my phone numbers on my pc but there doesn't appear any obvious way of doing this other than to uninstall Skype, which I might do because I"m disgusted with them. I'm sure there's some cooking lurking on my computer somewhere in a Skype folder that'is the culprit and needs to be deleted but I don't see where.

Originally, I sent this to the Internet forum, assuming it would be the most appropriate forum but got only one response that didn't address the issue so I figure it may be more focused in how xp interfaces with Skype.

Yesterday I left my computer open in Firefox and left the room for a minute. When I came back I was getting repeated system beeps and when I looked it seemed as if my mouse was moving on its own. I have used Skype one time since installing it a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was odd that Skype was among my most used programs yet I rarely use it.Anyways, when I got back my mouse kept on moving by itself so I disabled my wireless connection. The erratic mouse movements stopped. I then turned the wireless network back on, and the erratic movements started up again. So I turned off my internet, checked what processes were running, and saw that Skype was running as well as using a good portion of my memory. Another weird thing I think I should add is that the mouse seemed to go to the desktop and open a sort of hidden file. All of the mouse movements were way to fast for me to even keep up, but if I was hijacked the controller seemed to definitely have a purpose.I have since then uninstalled Skype and everything related, as well as disabling my webcam, but I am not sure if I was attacked and if I was if I have removed the threat. Here is my HJT log:Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 8:03:15 PM, on 3/1/2010Platform: Unknown Windows (WinNT 6.01.3504)MSIE: Internet Explorer v8.00 (8.00.7600.16385)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Internet Security\Engine\\ccSvcHst.exeC:\Program Files (x86) ... Yeah I just got my new computer not long ago and there has been nothing but trouble using Skype. During video calls Skype freezes and locks up my computer making me have to hold down the power button to shut it off. This happens often. I first thought it was a video card issue and Dell sent me a replacement card. Still happens. I have to chalk it up to Skype not being very compatible with Windows 8. This issue only happens when on Skype. I saw there was a patch Windows update for Skype but I have it already installed. I have no clue how to stop this issue. This is a brand new Dell XPS 8700 with 12gb Ram. This kind of stuff should not happen. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks.

Which version of Skype do you have?.
I have windows 8.1 and absolutely hated Skype for windows 8 so i permanently deleted it (it was crashing etc and i did not like how you navigated through it) .
Now i have installed skype for windows 7 and all works beautifully.

here is how i did it encase you want to try .
Delete skype for windows 8.

go to this link and follow the instructions

job done.

This could be a last resort if you can't resolve your issue , or something to try to pinpoint if it is skype or something else.

Recently Skype has totally locked up my computer. My only option was a warm boot. Now it's begun to shut the machine off. Not shut it down, shut it off. The first time it happened, I thought it was a brief power failure because the computer blinked completely off without warning. So I started a session in Hangouts to talk to a friend about it and the same thing happened, and there was clearly no power outage.

I didn't even get a BSOD. And Event Log Viewer won't work, even though the service is running. I downloaded and ran dm log collector and the zip files are attached below. I would be very grateful for any attention or help anyone can offer.

I use Skype on a daily basis to keep in touch with family. Generally, I have no problems. However, any contact with my son inevitably results in my computer shutting down. Our contact can last as long as half an hour, or as little as 2 minutes, but almost always ends the same way.
This does not happen with anyone else.
There's probably a simple explanation, but if there is it escapes me.

So last night skype kept giving me some error that it keep having to shut down and restart, one time instead of sending error report my comp did a little restart and i was kind of freaked out so i uninstalled and re-installed skype and it kept giving me an error. THEN when i logged on my comp today it restarted without me noticing ( i was busy during boot up) and i went to event viewer and it gave me this
"Error code 1000000a, parameter1 0004b014, parameter2 0000001c, parameter3 00000000, parameter4 804fad91."
I am POSITIVE skype had some dumb update and is causing this ( last time i had an issue it was an IE security update ) but I am not sure how to fix skype and get rid of this issue, and I need skype, it replaces my phone for me and my pals and it doesn't cost! I need your help!

SKYPE needs an ID (usually a Microsoft ID). Now is there anyway I can test a connection from My computer to phone or the reverse. AS I have only a single Microsoft ID I can't test this -- I don't want to wait until I'm over at someone else's house to set this up. Is there a way you can test a SKYPE video call between your own laptop and your mobile - I just want to see if the video works both ways.

Note: Previously posted in Network issues, and now posted here after discovering malware.

Hello folks,

I have searched and searched and have found the above problem many times but not with the same symptoms as mine.

I have been trying to fix it and may have made things worse.

This is my brother-in-laws computer. He had it at home and I think the browser was hijacked, as he installed some strange toolbar (starwon or something) and I searched it, it was malware I think, at that time he got a new computer so we just ignored it really.
Then he moved said computer to work, skype worked fine as did email through outlook, so although I had promised to try to get web working, I hadn't managed it. I had installed google chrome, but that didn't work either.

At this point, brother-in-law gets new version of office to have word 2007, and gets me to install it, in doing so, it came up with an error about a file not found on the cd (all originals with serials), I search the error, seems common, answer is to uninstall old version first, rather than attempt to update.

Of course I didn't realise that this new version doesn't have outlook on it, and so he loses all his files and now outlook express can't get his emails. It can't find the incoming server, or outgoing.

So that's were I am now. My mac works fine in his office, we are both plugged directly into wall. I can't seem to ping anything from his computer, but I'm not a tech. Just a pretendy tech.

Hi Guys,

I am a newbee in that forum and I come to you because I have a very strange issue that I cannot resolve by myself despite my multiple trials and web searches...

This happens after I start my computer. The following problems occur simultaneously :
- IE11 (and Chrome) do not open some web sites (i.e. VATTASTIC => Your looking glass into the world of Vatsim that includes a map with real time information, and showing the message { is not responding}. Even I reload the page, nothing happens...
- Skype is unable to connect and shows {Skype Home unavailable}. Meanwhile and from my tablet, Skype perfectly works.
- No PDF document can be open with Adobe PDF reader XI
- More surprising, both my FreeCell and Solitaire (my favourite games) crash... {not responding}.

Even if I restart the computer 2 or 3 times, nothing changes.

While keeping the computer switched on, it goes on Sleep mode and as soon as I wake it up after some time, and for an unidentified reason, all things work again .
So those days, I do not stop my computer except if, for software update reason, I am asked to.

Is there anybody who has faced the same situation ???
I would appreciate an assistance.
Thanks a lot in advance.

I tried reading at skype community for this problem but no solution still. I'm hoping someone can help me here. My skype is on automatic update but after an update it freezes my laptop. (I dunno what update version is that). I tried finding solution and they say try to install the older version, I think I have 6.2. Then just now, I can't log in, it says my skype is outdated. Can't run the new and can't run the old. How sad.
Any solution guys, pls? I'm using skype for work, I really need it.
I'm running Win7 64b Home Premium. I think all Home Premium have this error.
Thanks in advance!

A:Everytime I open skype, my computer freezes.

Uninstall all Skype in Control Panel>Programs.

Then search for Skype listings in registry: Set System Restore Point - Create, Type regedit in Start Search box, rightclick to Run as Admin, on Edit tab type Skype into Find box, keep finding Next until you delete all Skype keys only.

Reboot PC, reinstall latest Skype as Admin.

If this fails, temporarily create a new User account to install Skype upon to see if it varies.

Go over your install thoroughly using the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7
to establish a Clean Boot, check System Resources for Problems/Solutions, clear repeat errors from logs, check System File integrity, etc.

While I'm talking and surfing the net at the same time my computer completely freezes up and I have to reboot. I've used Avast to clear out my excess files, I've used windows defender to do pretty much the same thing; I've also cleaned the inside of my computer of dust. And still the same issues occurs. I'm at a loss at what the problem is. I'm also a google Chrome user. From what I can tell I've enough ram. Sometimes after a long wait of slugish performance a window appears that basically says that a skype script is running should I cancel it or let it run. As soon as I cancel it the computer starts working fast or normal again. This happens even when skype is NOT running. How do I keep the script from starting in the first place? I need skype so uninstalling is not an option. But when I do not need skype , I do not want the software running any scripts of any kind, because it slows the computer to a crawl. Unfortunately the window does not appear all the time, so next time I will write down the name of the script. Sorry.

Hi all I am having the above issue in my office with several PCs, does anyone else have this issue or resolution?

Break down of the problem, fixes and computers currently affected.

? PC turns on in the morning
? Logs in fine and loads up Windows 7
? PC gets IP address
? Skype loads up and connects
? Can ping and Google
? Browser doesn?t load webpages (IE, Chrome & Firefox)
? Outlook doesn?t connect to online mail server
? Restart PC (x amount of times)
o Sometimes black screen
? PC loads up and connects fine
? Once the PC has restarted and connected fine it is difficult to reproduce the problem for troubleshooting

Attempted Fixes
? Remove February Updates
? Disable automatic updates, Windows Defender, Firewall
? Group Policy disable Windows Updates
? Stop Services for Windows Updates, Windows Defender and Firewall
? Cmd - netsh winsock reset
? Cmd ? netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Remaining Fixes
? Graphics update/fix

Is it LAN only or does the same happen on Wifi (can test on Hamzas machine when problem reoccurs)?
We need to test the graphics fix on a PC that shows the problem

A:Computer slows down, can ping can't browse, Skype works,

Do all pc's have the same issue or only a few?
If you boot pc you can't browse webpages, or does problem appear a few minutes later?

Try: ping
Use a site you have never used since last boot! Works?

Are you using a proxyserver?
Skype keeps working all the time?

Alright, so I've got a problem. I'm new around these parts and things are getting dicey and frustrating for me. I'm running a Toshiba satellite lap top, I've had it for about a year now, an older model that I got around last Christmas actually. I use it primarily to video-chat with my fiance for a few hours in the evening over Skype and for my work, graphics artist, running Illustrator and Photoshop, both the latest versions.

I've had a few problems with it before, I think that I mistook them for a virus though. I had reformatted it before back to factory standards, but now the problems seem to be back. I thought that they were simply the laptop over heating, but I get them even when I'm using a lap fan, so I doubt that is the problem really.

What the issue is, it keeps seizing up randomly - largely while I'm running Skype, but that is usually when I'm on the computer. I can often tell that its
going to because Skype won't let me access the control panel video chat interface while I'm in it. Then the person that I'm talking to, their feed will die so that I can't see them at all, freezing in place, but they can still hear and see me just fine. I've noticed that while its doing this, I'll also loose control of the task bar, so I can't control the volume or access the start menu.

I've also had roughly four blue screens that I can remember, generally while I'm Skyping - this is what made me believe that i... Read more

Hi.. This is my first post.. so if I am posting in the wrong area I apologise.
I hope youcan help me sort out at least 2 issues withmy PC.
1. I keep on getting messages from security.monitor on Skype that I have a problem with my windows security. This is a fairly recent problem ie about 3 weeks old.
2. Prior to this my PC regularly locks up, including skype. Internet Explorer can be the worst culprit. and the CPU usage percentage shoots up to 100% even when there are no applications running... The only way out is to restart the PC..

The PC is new ( 6 months old) .. and has Windows XP. I am running Norton security, spywarebot ( the paid for version.. although I did remove it yesterday.. thinking that was causing some issues), plus the free versions of avg 7.5, avg rootkitfree, and spyware doctor.. all of which tell me that everything is ok. I have 67 processes running...

I hope someone can help me sort this out..

Many thanks

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with Windows Vista OS. I have a Dell 926 printer interfaced to it via USB. Printer driver is installed and the printer does communicate at times with the computer and does a good job printing. However, intermittently when trying to print a document I'll get a message on the computer that says that communication has been lost and print job failed.

I've checked all connections to make sure they are solid and no debris that might cause this.
That has not corrected the problem.
The other thing that happens is that the document I want to print will stay in the print queue/spooler and if I shut the computer and printer down and restart both it will print the job. And it may continue to print jobs but it's just a matter of time.

Needless to say this is frustrating. I can print several jobs in a row with no problem and then I'll get this "communication has been lost between printer and computer". And I have to go thru the procedure above to get the last job printed.

My wife doesn't understand how this works and will try to print the same job several times with the commo problem and then complains when it won't print.....and then they all print when the above procedure is followed.

Any ideas what is going on??? Any fixes??

The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

I've been having an issue since having my computer fixed/formatted over winter break in which I get a black screen and a repetitive spamming of whatever sound was playing (like a stuck record or something like that).

Quick Info: Using Vista with SP2. I believe that I have the most recent video drivers (I certainly tried to install them anyway). I'm using a dual-monitor display (laptop and monitor). All of my dxdiag info is attached.

I run into this issue without fail about 5-10 seconds into anything that, from what I can tell, is both video intensive and interactive.

For example, I can watch videos and movies without any issue, but I can't run any games or Skype. I've tried my old Warcraft III CD, Gunz the Duel (demands very little of the system), and Skype. However, I can use video chat through other services (AIM, Digsby).

As far as past capabilities go, I used to be able to run games like World of Warcraft, Age of Conan, etc. without any issue. I've exhausted my technical knowledge trying to figure this out so if anyone can help, I appreciate it.

Also, regarding the video drivers. I tried a few times to update them, but I'm not sure if it ever worked. The change was never reflected in my dxdiag.

Not so much a software support question, but this is the best I could figure it'd go into... but if I have an Office 365 subscription that includes 60 minutes of Skype calling a month, do I still need to purchase a Skype number so people can call me and for people to know who's calling them?

I tested it out as it is right now and when I call my dad's phone, says "Unknown caller."

I've even uninstalled Chrome and re-installed it with the same result.

I have both on my Windows 10 pc and only Skype Preview seems to actually work. What's really weird is I can't find much about either online, so I'm not even sure if Messaging + Skype is being continued or even still functional. Does it require a companion phone app to work? Just really confused on how barebones and non-functional this all seems, even after some Googling. Can anyone shed some light for me?

I have always used Skype for Desktop and only recently found that there is a Skype Modern App on my system.
From what I have read it would seem the best plan would be to ditch the App and just continue with the desktop version.
Have there been any recent changes that would make the the Modern App a better solution than the Desktop version?

A:Skype for Desktop vs Skype Modern App

They have updated it recently so it doesn't continue to ring even when you have answered the desktop version which is why I uninstalled it in the first place. This means in theory you could install both and answer whichever you felt like at the time.

I prefer the look of the desktop version personally so I never re-installed the Modern App version.

Was given a Dell Optiplex 360 that I found out after getting a nasty virus had a bootleg XP OS
I also did not have any disks with it. I had older disks for a Dell 4600 that I used to wipeout the hard drive and install the new OS. Everything works fine except that I can not load any of the drivers from the second disk, (it was a 3 disk series)
thus at least at this point not able to connect with my cable internet. Cable people told me I needed the drivers.Any suggestions or can it just not be done.
Thanks, Al

A:Loading Older Dell OS To Newer Dell Computer

You will have to go to the dell website look under support and then drivers and downloads for your model of computer. If you use the service tag number on the computer it will make sure you get the correct ones you need. For future reference so you wont have this hassle again burn all of the drivers to a cd so you will be all set the next time.

Download the prebuilt ISO, burn it to CD as an Image, boot from that CD and run the memory test for a couple of hours or overnight to stress test the memory.

My battery for the above computer has expired and needs to be replaced but I do not know who sells replacement batteries XBT9E1 or compatible ones.

A:How do I buy a battery for my Dell computer Mod. Dell DE051

I believe the replacement battery you are after is a CR2032. If in doubt take the flat battery to your electronics store and ask for the equivalent. They're not very expensive.

Can anyone suggest a way to get a dell 770 printer to work on a non dell win98 system?

My friend was given the printer from his friends, but it's a dell and it's pretty muh brand new so he doesn't want to throw it away. It's also better than his current printer

Anyway, he uses the dell install disk but once it begins and runs the setup app it gives a message akin to pirating. Saying something like -this computer does not support dell , or something like - this computer is not a dell.

Can anyone offer advice. I did a search on google and dells' site and here.
I couldn't quite find anything that might lead me to an answer..?

I don't understand what are the benefits of using UWP vs desktop apps (like Viber and Skype) and having two versions installed on my PC seems a bit strange.

A:Should I use Skype UWP or Skype Desktop app on my PC?

The future is the UWP app. It will be replacing the desktop app. Benefits are notification integration and security.
I would go with the new app. It appears to work well here as a preview, and only expect it to get better.

I have been using Skype paid calls for business usage and have huge problems with the Other side not hearing me well or at all. It used to work OK but now I have to restart hub or reconnect or just wait . This is for calls to International. If I call skype to skype it is OK most of time. My provider BT has checked all hub settings and network seems fine. I am about to give up on skype to non skype as a business option and the fact I am spending good money and cant get instant support really doesnt help. I am out of ideas

Unless you are on an RT tablet I would just use the desktop version, from the reviews the app is not very good, perhaps after some future updates it will be better.

I also end up with cascading windows.. when i try to move a window out of the way .. similar to the way cards fill up the screen on successful completion of a card game !

I have a two year old Dell PC with Windows 7. I got a virus in my computer that by phone and computer takeover Norton located in my MBR. When they cleaned it my computer will no longer boot up. Norton worked with me for three days on the problem but we were unable to fix the computer. I followed other web sites and repaired my MBR but it still will not boot up. I tried System Repair, Check point, Image, and Dell system restore and all failed. I have tried to use the Windows install CD and all I get is a black screen with a flashing cursor and then after 3 minutes the compute attempts to boot again and fails. I tried everything to try and wipe the drive from C prompt and it will not let me. I have very weak computer skills but I can follow directions and I have wiped a previous computer I owned. (I confirmed that my CD drive is working) I also should mention I have a second hard drive on my computer that I backed everything up to.

A:Dell Computer PC will not load Windows install CD from computer crash

See if you can reset the BIOS hardware/software connections and then clear the CMOS to access your Windows 7 install disc.
Resetting hardware/software connections in the BIOS and clearing temporary memory of corruption:Shut down and turn off the computer.
Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).
"Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station, disconnect
cables to printers or devices such as external monitors, USB memory sticks or SD cards, headset or external speakers, mouse or auxiliary keyboard, turn off WIFI and Bluetooth wireless devices." (Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues HP Pavilion dv5000 Notebook PC series - HP Customer Care (United States - English))
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This closes the circuit and ensures all
power from components is drained to clear the software connections between the BIOS
and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
(If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall. Do not reconnect any unnecessary peripherals; monitor, keyboard,
and mouse should suffice and be the only peripherals reconnected.
Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware

Have u looked in the BIOS and mad sure the CD is the first boot device, this should be installable (changeable) in the BIOS, altho your BIOS might not have that option, and u can leave it that way as it will not mess up anything. Once u boot to the Windows CD u should have options to format or anything u need to do.

I would like to install a new video card for my dell machine. Here is a list of my specs...

Dell Inspiron 531s
Windows 7 32-bit
Power Supply Unit: 250w
1 PCI-Express slot

Current Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430
(motherboard gpu)

Here is the GPU I'm looking at: - SPARKLE SFPX95GT512U2L GeForce 9500 GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards
I am concerned about the weak power supply and the motherboard GPU interfering.

Should I be considering a external power booster?

I would love to hear your suggestions.

A:New GPU for Dell Computer

I would look at the power supply and see if a normal size new power supply would fit into that case, if not I would "re-case" the whole machine when I add the new video card so I wouldnt have any power issues.

Yes. Goto the manufactures web site for your printer and download windows 10 drivers and run the install. Do the same for the modem that you were using for fax, and make sure it shows up in the device manager without a yellow exclamation point, and then make sure the Windows Fax software is installed.

Have a Dell 410 XPS with vista that I would like to reformat. What is the proper procedure for reformatting both the C and D drives. My reinstallation disk has more options than the reinstalation disks that came with my old Compaq(it had 2 cds and no otions). The manual that came with my computer is rather vague about this. I know this can be a long drawn out affair, and have backed up all my info and would like to clean my computer out and bring it back to like it was the day I got it. Yes I do have some major issues with my computer that requires me to reformat, mostly caused by me.
thanks mike

A:Reformatting A Dell 410 Computer

I did a Dell today that used F8 to access the recovery partition. That should be the quickest way to reformat your Dell and will leave the recovery partition intact (along with the Tools partition if you have one).

If you'd like to get rid of all partitions, then you'll have to delete the partitions and create one partition to hold everything. Then you can install Vista with the Operating System, Drivers, and Utilities disks that came with your Dell.

Personally, I'd go with the first option above - it's quicker and you won't have to install all the drivers and applications.

you cannot use a clone from a dell computer to another. It violates manufacturers oem license from microsoft. besides different computer, different motherboard, different drivers. windows would have to be reinstalled if it was a legit transfer.
