After our Dell Inspiron E1505 recently crashed , Dell talked us thru diagnostics and finally sent us a replacement(refurbished) Toshiba hard drive to install in our computer. After installing it, and reloading all of the software for Windows XP, MS Office Small Business 2003, drivers and utilities, using the discs that came with the computer, we have a "Found New Hardware" window that pops up - Wizard trying to install a "Base System Device" everytime we turn the computer on. It asks for a disc but none of my existing ones seem to be the correct one. I've given it permission to connect to the Internet to "find" the software but nothing works.
Also, since the crash/re-install, our C drive only has 12.4 GBs of total disc space, and of that, only 1.2 is still free space. My D drive has about 37 GBs of disc space. Could these two problems be connected? The computer was running so slow and we would periodically get a message "low virtual memory". This weekend, I moved as many of our documents as possible to the D drive to try and free up space. It's a little better, but why do I have such a small amount of disc space? Help!

Dear Experts,

I have created windows image on Drive F: but delete it after some time manually due to some space prob.
But while backup shows about 40 GB only few GB space got free after deletion. When i try to again take the the backup using windows 7 backup & restore option, its still shows 35 Gb of System Image in drive F: when i brows the Manage Disc Space option but i cant find it on the same drive. (Plz see attached pic)
Plz help me to locate this and delete the same.

A:Cant find "System Image" of 36 GB but its shows on "Manage Disc Space"

Hello sattyaji, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It may still be showing if the system image was created as part of a Windows backup. Using the tutorial below to reset Windows Backup should clear it for you, but you will need to set up your backup again afterwards.

My HDD shows 21GB+ free yet MS Word will not save and says "Insufficient memory. Not enough disc space". Norton AV and Trend Micro scans detected no virus, Add-Aware and Spybot found nothing either.

Had a quick read about [email protected] or [email protected] on Symantec's site and their fix warns that I may have to re-install Word afterwards.

Is there any way I can confirm this is the problem before I try their removal tool?

I have Word 2002 btw, any help will be appreciated,

I know this question has been asked before as I've read about it all over the Internet. In order to get rid of the 'Low Disk Space' message it says to go to the registry and locate HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer, type a new value, etc. The only problem is I don't have an Explorer key. It ends at Policies.

I've tried everything. I've tried creating the key myself, and I've tried inserting the value into the policies folder. Nothing has worked. Can anyone help?
Thank you

I am having speed/space issues with my Dell Inspiron 4000 laptop. I'm running Windows XP. The last week or so it has been taking an inordinate amount of time to bring up new windows, change tabs in Firefox, etc., even bringing up the Start Menu takes time and makes a lot of noise. I've also noticed that there is very little space left on my hard drive. I have continued to move photos to a USB key and delete old files, but the space keeps filling up, and I don't know what's causing it. I also had one incident this week where I typed a web address into Firefox (I don't remember exactly which site--something very regular like Facebook or Gmail) and it brought up a completely different site with questionable content (no, it was not a pop-up, and the page I wanted didn't load in a new tab or anything). I am putting a HijackThis log below.

Thank you much for your help!

Several times a day I get a message "Outlook Express. To free up disc space, Outlook Express can compact messages. This may take up to a few minutes" which is preceeded by 10 minutes of my PC being very slow. I have 50% disc space free (37GB out of 74). I run Windows 97. I have defragmented my disc several times. I have used RegCure regularly and it has made no difference. At other times, I try to start Outlook Express and a message comes up saying it is already running, followed a little while later by the above error message. Any ideas, please?

Hi, new user here.

Well, bought an used notebook with some car diagnostics software on, and a hardware USB-interface.
The laptop though, runs a Windows 7 x64 Enterprise, which i believe is a "copy". The machine got a OEM Windows 7 x64 Pro sticker underneath.
Did try the downgrade trick, mentioned allover this forum, but for some reason it does not work.
I had to uninstall SP1, as I didn't have a SP1 DVD ready on hand.

When running the compabilityscan, I get the following error; (roughly translated from Danish)

"There is not sufficient discspace in partition (G . There must be at least 15 MB free space."

Note: Partition G: is a partition on 100 MB created by the Windows installation. Theres ~200 gig free on my SSD, which also held the G:, when the installation is started.

Any clues what to do from here?

I am constantly receiving the "Windows Explorer has Stopped Working", when using explorer.

After looking on the Microsoft Support, I ran System File Checker (CFS) but although CFS has reported it found corrupt files it was unable to fix some of them. I am also denied access to the report log so cannot find more information on these corrupt files. I'm currently running a full virus and malware scan but I'm not overly optimistic that this will sort the issue.

Could you please tell me how to sort this issue? The errors are making explorer unusable!

Hi, welcome to TSF!

You have a password stealer rootkit in your system.

You are strongly advised to do the following immediately:

1. Disconnect infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.

2. Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.

3. From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.

Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passords and transaction information.

Download haxfix.exe and save it to your desktop.
Double click on haxfix.exe to run it.
A red "dos window" (dos box) will open with this options:1. Make logfile
E. Exit Haxfix
Select option 1. Make logfile by typing 1 and then pressing Enter.
Haxfix will start scanning the computer. When it is finished a logfile will open: haxlog.txt
Copy the contents of that logfile and paste it into this thread.

Any Ideas?

A:constant message "Disk E:/ is corrupt, run chkdsk on the drive to resolve issues"

I'd be testing both the RAM and the hard drive. Vista is really good at stressing out a system and may show issues when XP was fine, as was the case with XP versus 98.

To test the memory I'd use:

Then find out what brand of hard drive you have, probably will show you in Device Manager, and use the manufacturer's diagnostics to test it.

Another cause could be the drivers for the motherboard. Have you installed any chipset drivers? What motherboard do you have?

If your machine won't read CDs (but can eg, play DVDs) and gives a "prepare this blank disc" error message, there is probably a driver conflict. After several warranty calls to Dell, much good advice, updating drivers and firmware, and installing a new CD Drive (Optiarc) it would work for a bit then crash again.

After a bit more research - see the closed thread at 'Prepare This Blank Disc' Problem, which is useful but failed, I decided to uninstall Roxio 9, which unfortunately came preinstalled.

Make sure every reference to Roxio is deleted. Search the computer and registry. Maybe uninstall the CD drive and reinstall, reboot, then it may work. Mine did! I then installed ImgBurn which does a fine job of copying CDs.

All other options (eg, relating to upper and lower filters) failed in my case. I think the problem started with Vista Business SP1 install. Good luck.

Hey All,

I was downloading a driver from the website, it was going incredibly slow (just another reason I wouldn't get an Acer) and then download stopped half-way through, probably just a connection dropout. Now when I browse to the folder on my USB key where it was originally going to go, it throws up an annoying message saying "Please insert the last disk of the multi-volume set and click OK to continue" - Even though the file has been erased from my USB drive, it still asks for the multi-volume set

Any Ideas?

Hi Rome,

Seems you have autoplay enabled. Not a big deal, but whenever you insert your usb drive it will try and read the contents of the files on it. You can temporarily disable autoplay by opening control panel and typing autoplay in the search box at the top right. Click on the line that says "Stop or start using autoplay for all media devices" The next window that opens will give you an option near the top left to stop autoplay. Clear that check box!

Next insert your usb drive and erase the offending files!!

That's it. Hope I helped

On one system I am getting this error message once every day or two. The hard drive has over 300GB available. The verbatim error message shows nothing in Google.

It reads:
"The space on the hard drive is running low. Currently only xMB is free. Please free space by deleting unused files."

Now it shows 71MB free. Any thoughts?

A:Error Message "The space on the hard drive is running low" isn't true

so do you have 300 gb? or only 71 mb? because if its 71 mb, u have got some major cleaning to do. I doubt that though, some viruses clutter the hard drive. If you have plenty of room, and your still getting the message then you can follow these instructions to remove the annoying message.

Hi there!
First of all thanks for the great toturial and the forum.

I tried to do the in-place upgrade from Windows 10 (build 1607) in order to "repair" my system (there are some quirks I want to get rid off) using a freshly created USB (as per description), but it fails with the message "make sure that there is enough disk space available in your PC" (rough translation from german; see attached screenshot) without any further information.

It then automatically cycles back to the question on how to install (i.e. with keeping data and apps or without) and then back into the above mentioned error message.

This is what I already tried or made sure of prerequisites needed:
I have made sure that there is definitely enough disk space available. My C: partition (where windows resides on) is 106 GB large and has currently over 58 GB of free space available. The system partition that is supposed to be 350 MB is still 350 MB (I read something about this potentially being reduced to 100 MB by other tools ...).I have deinstalled the Kaspersky anti virus tool (reinstalled it now after several tries with no success).I have disabled (i.e. fully decrypted) the disk encryption bitlocker on all disks.

I receive daily a "Low Disk Space" error message which is incorrect and in my estimation fradulent. It goes on to give an alternative to rectify this situation by offering to "Speed up your computer and remove all viruses that are on your computer." Of course all of this is for a price. If you opt in and then change your mind before you totally commit they offer the same package for half price. I refuse to be "sucked in" by this fraudulent company.

I have gone to the internet to try and find out how I may get rid of this enemy. I have used Malwarebytes, Microsoft Security Essentials and Microsofts Security fix program all to no avail. I saw a similar thread on these forums about this but it as it was solved the mods closed it. Anyway, my problem is I cleaned out my system 2 wks ago and must have removed something I should have bec now whenever I have my iPod plugged in and I move a file from it, etc a window pops up saying "no disc in drive E, etc.." with 3 buttons (cancel, try again, continue). I push any or all buttons or right click and close to get rid of it. It's becoming very annoying. I read on the net it is sometimes associated with Norton or iTunes and bec I don't have Norton it must be iTunes related.

I did a scan with HijackThis and I think it's just a matter of clicking on the proper file and "fix checking" but I don't want to make it worse so I'm a little hesitant. That's not the way HijackThis works. It's not simply a matter of clicking a file and checking "Fix". "Fix" actually deletes the entry. It doesn't fix anything. You should avoid "Fixing" anything in HijackThis or you may end up with serious problems. Only do so when advised by an expert.

I have no problems when it's wired, but I got wifi for a reason. Here's my ipconfig, I'm gonna go to school and try downloading something there on their network and see what happens. Please help, I just wanna play Team Fortress

Hello, I've been searching up and down for a solution to the issue I've been having with my network for the past couple months now with no luck, and I'm hoping someone here may know what the issue is...

Here goes, after moving 3 months ago and switching from a cable connection I had for years without issue, and going to Verizon DSL (after ironing out all the bugs I had with it in the first place), now my computer constantly loses it's local area connection, with the icon showing in the bottom tray saying "a network cable is unplugged." I know I have no issues with my modem or wired router as my Xbox360 doesn't lose connection. Whenever this happens I have to go into network connections and disable and enable the connection before it connects again, then it doesn't last long before it does it again. I've tried changing out the cable, so shouldn't be a bad cable. Tried switching firewalls and playing around with settings with it, no luck. Is this the sign of a bad NIC? Or more likely some system settings deep down somewhere (which I pretty much have no experience with)? It's driving me nuts as I can't get anything done!

Thanks for your time and pleaseeee help! =)

I keep getting a message telling me that "to free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact messages." It pops up every time I attempt to close OE. I've clicked to start the compacting process several times, but invariably I get a message telling me: "The folder is currently in use by Outlook Express or by another application." At that point I click Cancel to close it out. In other words, I cannot get the compacting process to run its course.

Unfortunately, this sequence of events keeps happening again and again, and I don't know how to stop it. I would greatly appreciate hearing from someone who might have an answer to this problem. Thank you.

I'm pretty new at posting so I'm not sure of the best way to do this. When I start to log on to the net, whether using IE or Firefox an error message having to do with "Google" occurs immediately. (I usually use my Google bar to go directly to the site I want.) I've taken a print screen so that you can see that message directly but don't know how I should get it to you. (I'm used to emailing such things --) As I proceed I get another message which I have also copied. This one starts with the words "Assertion Failed." If I continue I usually get a "script error" message, a copy of which I do not have at this time. If I tell the message that I will proceed with going to my chosen web site, the last several times the site has come up in multiplicity, most recently it appeared 16 times, one right after another, totally out of my control, (causing I believe Foxfire to crash), and then just a bit ago, using IE, the site I logged on to came up 7 times. I really have no idea what to do about this so I'm hoping that you can help me once again.

My laptop with the Vista (ugh) OS has devloped a very annoying problem. After I boot the system and start to open files or folders something happens to the system. Everything i try to do, like clicking on a link. return to previous screen, close the file, etc... I get "not responding". I get the busy curser symbol and the curser will move so the system isn't totally locked up. However nothing I try to do except open Task Manager will work.
I then have to wait for several minutes for the system to either finish or quit what its in the process of doing to respond to my command.
Does anyone have any idea what the system might be doing (busy curser symbol!)? It's doing something because I see the drive activity led constantly lit.
I've ran all the AntiVirus and MalWare programs I can find, all to no avail.
I've had this laptop since 2006 and it started this problem a couple of momths ago. Any help or suggestions would greatly appreciated!

This is a question posed to me by a friend that I did not have an answer to. He wants to know what an album he picked up that he thinks is copy protected (only evidence: no "Compact Disc" logo in the tray, one of those FBI Anti-Piracy Warning logos that's on the back of every record nowadays and that, when the CD is placed in the computer, an autorun comes up with an option to "Play Audio". No actual statement on the jewel case, tray booklet or compact disc that the CD is copy protected) will do to his computer or his media player of choice, even though he is not copying the record, just playing it with a later possibility that he might rip the record to his computer for his iPod. The album he's dealing with is not one of those rootkit-plagued CDs that Sony manufactured a couple years ago, but an album released in 2009 or 2010 by Universal Music.

This is a question i've kinda wondered about for a while, as well, but not enough to really ask. I've put in the same CD into my computer, but even though the autorun came up, it didn't seem playback-centric, didn't seem to install anything as far as I know and three tracks in I see no problems with playback in Winamp or problems with But he seems to be worried about long term effects of just putting the CD in one's computer and playing it, I suppose?

Hello Forum members,

I am stumped by what appears to be a simple problem, but the answer is eluding me. I bought a brand new Hitachi 60gig 7,200 rpm HD for my Thinkpad T21 last year and installed, loaded and used it with zero problems until I was on a wi-fi connection at a hotel one evening. The connection gradually slowed to a halt, then the window I was in froze. Then the desktop failed to respond. I tried cntl/alt/delete with no success. No amount of keyboard commands had any affect, I was locked out. I couldn't even power down normally. I had to unplug the A/C cable, then remove the battery to get the laptop to shut down. I waited ten minutes and booted up like normal. This was the blue screen error message I received; "Unmountable boot volume on drive C:" Then I was given restart options as usual to no avail. It has never come out of it, regardless of the methods I have tried. Here is the strange part. I had initially loaded two (2) separate XP Pro OS's onto the HD splitting them evenly into 30gig partitions. I did that to keep web surfing separate from my dedicated music recording software, which I didn't want to risk corrupting. So, the final result is, when I boot up, I can ask for the D: drive (where the recording software resides) and it runs perfectly, but if I boot and ask for C; I get the above message. Also when I go to "My Computer" from the D: drive OS, it shows the C: drive available, but when I double click for it, it says... Read more

I used to be able to access the "Repair your Computer" option when I booted up the install and repair disc (that I originally downloaded from digitalriver since I have an OEM installed version of Windows), but now I get the following error message:

"System Recovery options
This version of system recovery options is not compatible with the version of windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of windows".

I've read another post that says the issue may be the Service Pack 1 download:

"I have heard some people mention that you cannot use the original DVD to recover once "Service Pack 1" is installed but I never tried it for myself. So it is plausible that this is your issue; you may have upgraded to W7 SP1 (part of Windows automatic updates) and the disks were created when you were just W7."

This is the only explanation I can find for my situation.

Has anyone experienced this problem and what is the solution?

I am trying to access the "repair your computer" option to restore a System Image from a backup on an external hard drive because I want to test that it works before I have to use it for real. How ironic that I can't even get access to the option to restore a system image....

Any/all help appreciated.

A:Error message when trying to use "Repair your Computer" on repair disc

My understanding is, if your system has SP-1 installed your Repair Disc must also have SP-1.

If your Image doesn't have SP-1 I suggest making a new Image that includes SP-1.

Big Kudos to anybody who can solve this one! Very little/nothing on Google or microsoft support site.
Here's the problem:

I'm helping a family member who has a new Dell PC with Windows XP Home, Outlook Express 6.
Every time they close Outlook Express, the following Warning pops up:
To free up disk space OE can compact messages. This may take a few minutes. There are 2 options - OK and Cancel.

Here is the rub: We've closed the warning, or we've clicked OK, or we've clicked cancel, we've checked the box that says don't ask me again....these warnings continue to come up next time (EVERY time) Outlook Express is closed.

This is a senior citizen who has, maybe, 20 email messages and no shortage of memory or disk space. I want to prevent this warning from coming up ever again. How do I do it? Is there some default I can change somewhere?

Here's the story. I bought this new Samsung 840 250GB SSD.
I first did a clean install of windows 7 on it and it worked fine. Windows installed without much problem and everything. Then something didn't look right about the partitions. It looked like because I had all my HDDs connected while installing windows on the SSD the windows created the system reserve on the old HDD rather than the SSD. So I went back and decided to start from scratch with all the HDDs except for the SSD disconnected. I tried reinstalling windows on it but this time it didn't work. I tried formatting the SSD and it just gave me an error saying windows couldn't install on a GPT disk. I went into bios, made sure the PC was booting from the UEFI DVD drive and it still kept giving me the same error.

So I then booted up my old HDD. I tried formatting my SSD and now I can't delete the partition!
This is what my disk set up looks like:

If I click "extend volume" on the "New Volume (G" disk, it says "there is not enough space on the disk(s) to complete this operation".
If I try to create a "new simple volume" on the "unallocated" partition, it says the same...

Have I destroyed my new SSD now?! I just want it to work like a new clean disk...

I installed Ubuntu (a popular Linux distribution) a few days ago. I had Windows XP. It was fine but I had very little RAM: 256 MB (-32MB of which is shared with the video card) with which Feisty Fawn (the version 7.04 of Ubuntu is called this - it is the latest) would run really slow. So my friend suggested I use a live CD of GNOME Partition Editor, create the partitions and turn the swap on before I started installing Ubuntu. I created 3 partitions of ext3 format on my 160GB Hard disc for Root, Home and Swap which were 20GB, 10 GB, and 1 GB respectively. I had not yet installed Ubuntu.
After that I could not boot with XP, It gave me and error saying:
A disc read error had occurred.
Press Alt+Ctrl+Del to restart.
So I tried the recovery Console in the XP CD and tried fixboot and fixmbr.
It still gave me the error. So I was like, what the heck and installed Ubuntu. The GRUB boot loader screen gives me an option to start XP but I keep getting the same error. I have all the partitions mounted on Ubuntu and can access them. The data is all fine. What is wrong?

I forgot to mention that after the partitioning, I booted with the live CD and tried installing Ubuntu but quit on step 6 where I wasn't sure if I should import my XP account. I planned to ask a friend later. He has been on Ubuntu for nearly six months now and he has no idea what is wrong with Windows. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Recently I noticed that my "C" partition, which ONLY has the "XP Pro" OS and a few related programs on it, has gone from 50% UNUSED space down to 35%. I have not added anything, except MS automatic downloads. There was one a week or so ago that seemed large. Could that be the cause of the increase? Are there files that 'grow' unnoticed that can be removed?

I understand that once the "C" disk (partition) is filled beyond 50%, "XP" progressively slows down. I do not want that to happen, and purposely created a partition twice as large as the size of "XP." If necessary, I could increase the size of the "C" partition.

Hi Rachel3790 and welcome to TSF !

It's better to start your own thread so that we keep one thread for one user. Here's a link to the related thread you first posted into :

Which program did you use to backup your system drive ?

If this is an HP computer have a look at the link advised by Mon in the other thread :

Else, when disk space is running low, Windows may advise you to run the disk cleanup utility which allows you to delete temporary files and empty the recycle bin, among other things. Since this doesn't help it means that your hard drive is simply filled with your own data and the data from the programs you installed on it. The backup you just created is probably also taking some space and if you don't need it you should just delete it.

What you need to do is copy some files on CD's or DVD's, on an external drive or to another computer. You should uninstall the programs you're not using anymore using add/remove programs and you can also delete some old documents of yours in your "my document" folder if you don't need them anymore.

Be careful not to delete any system file or folder. Files that are safe to move away are video and music files. These media files usually take plenty of space and you can free that space if you burn them on CD's or DVD's and delete them from your hard drive.

Just yesterday I noticed these odd objects/designs/however you'd describe them (they look like space invaders or something) floating around my screen randomly.. They appear when different programs are open (I've seen them with WMP open playing video, with Acrobat open viewing a PDF, and even now with Firefox open) and they don't necessarily stay in the window that is open, they will appear even outside the window, but if I switch to a different window they will disappear.. Earlier today I tried to dual boot my hard drive to run both Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I wasn't able to do it properly (I must have done some wrong steps, I'm new to all this stuff and didn't realize how complicated partitioning was... ah.) and now my hard drive is left with "free space" (15GB, I think its an extended partition) and "unallocated space" (38GB, not sure what kind of partition it is) alongside my C drive (primary), Lenovo Recovery partition (primary), and something called "SYSTEM_DRV" (primary).

I think the "free space" is extended because when I try and create a new volume with the "unallocated space", I'm denied and a window pops up saying I have too many primary partitions.

The option to 'delete partition' for the "free space" is available but if I select it, a warning window pops up (included in thumbnail below).

What I'd like to do is reformat the "free space" and "unallocated space" in some way that it can be used/merged to the C drive.

I've included a screen cap of my HD in Disk Manager below.

Hi referee07,

The "clean up unnecessary files" is safe to use. You can also add
choices in the list of what's to be deleted. You can also safely
remove all temporary files... Search for "*.tmp" (without quotes)
and delete those.

Also the trash bin standard setting is 10% of your drive. I would
adjust that downward to 2 % on all drives.

And, of course, you can delete some things that you really don't
need, or put them on a CD if you have a burner. Hope that helps.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

The tech guys on that forum were unable to find the source... Read more

I use Windows XP. I installed and ran the Avast grime fighter and then found two of my programs - one for tax preparation and one for backing up to an external hard drive - won't "open". Instead, I get the error message "failed to create empty document". I uninstalled the programs then reinstalled them, but no change - I still get the message. I saw, by googling the message, that it may have something to do with a windows registry file, but I really don't understand what that is or how to get to it or how to fix it. I contacted the Avast folks and they said they could put me in touch with their microsoft folks for $180! I am at a loss as to what I should do. Please can anyone help me figure out what to do to get these programs to run? I really need the tax program especially. Thank you.

I've seen posts (e.g., this one) about getting the error message "This file is not in a recognizable format" when trying to open files in Excel. Apparently this can occur for various reasons, but an online search didn't turn up an answer for my own situation, so I'm posting the solution I came up with.

In my case, the error message appeared when I installed Excel 2007 on the same machine as Excel 2000 and tried to open 2000. To eliminate the problem:
Close Excel.
Go to Documents and Settings > Application Data > Microsoft > Excel > XLSTART. The folder contains a PERSONAL.XLS and PERSONAL.XLSB file.
Assuming Office 2000 and Office 2007 have been installed in separate directories in Program Files:
- Move the PERSONAL.XLS file to Program Files > Microsoft Office > Office > XLStart
- Move the PERSONAL.XLSB file to Program Files > Microsoft Office 2007 (or however it's named) > Office 12 > XLSTART.
Don't just copy the files--move them. The original folder should be empty.
Restart Excel 2000.

A:Solved: Excel error message: "This file is not in a recognizable format"

Thanks for that, but Microsoft recommends you do not have two versions of Office installed on the same computer - then the error would not occur.

AMD - A64 X2 5000+ 2.6 AM2 65n
Western Digital - 320G SATA - HD
Pioneer - DVD/CD writer
Kingston - 2 x 1 DDR2 667

I put everything together and it booted right off the bat. I formatted and partitioned the HD using WD's formatting program.

The board saw my drives as IDE and changed the drives from IDE to AHCI.

After the system shows the "Verifing DMI data pool" message, I get the "NTLDR is missing, Alt-Control-Delete to restart" message.

I looked on the net and found some possible fixes, but none have worked for me. I have set the bios to boot from both the HD and DVD/CD, but get the message either way. Also, this system does not have a floppy drive.

I also do not get a prompt to bood from cd which is what I need to install XP.

We are having some difficulty ending programs running on Windows XP Home Edition. When logging off our desktops (I have configured our home PC for the four members of our family so that each person has a user account with its own desktop), my wife and I, who have administrator accounts, routinely get an error message: ?Ending program - Socket Notification Sink,? followed by another box: ?The program is not responding?; on pressing End Now, there is often an opportunity to send an error report to Microsoft. Our children, whose accounts are non-administrative, have additional problems handing windows. Most often, when they try to close a pop-up window while connected to the internet, the screen freezes so that the mouse can be moved around but clicking on objects evokes no response; to get around this we have had to teach them to use Ctrl+Alt+Del to call up the Task Manager so that they can use its menu to log off, and start fresh by logging in again. Neither repeated restarts, nor running anti-virus (AVG Free Ed.) and anti-spyware (AVG Anti-Spyware; Ad-Aware, Spybot S & D) programs, has healed the problem.

Searches on Microsoft?s Support site have turned up no helpful results for ?Socket Notification Sink.? If the error message is generated by Windows, why would there be no documentation? Are we dealing with a worm that mimics Microsoft error boxes?

Doing Google searches for the same phrase led me to several technical forums where other people describe similar... Read more

Hi, TSG Masters.

I recently inherited a laptop from a colleague who left (OS is Win XP, SP2 installed). Unfortunately, I believe it was infected by the "autorun.vbs" trojan. Everytime I double-click on the mounted hard drives, a new window will open. And when I right-click on them, garbage messages appear instead of the "Open" and "Explore" options.

Avast! was the previously installed anti-virus program, but I replaced this with F-Secure. A recent scan was able to delete the trojan, but now, I can't get rid of the "Can not find script "c:\autorun.vbs"" message everytime I double click on my drives. And the garbage texts are still there where I right click.

I plan to transfer my important files from my desktop to this laptop (via external hard disk), but I'm afraid it might get infected while the laptop isn't completely "clean".

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Hi there

I have a home computer running Windows XP with Outlook Express 6 and a laptop running Windows 7 with Outlook 2010.

I have had my pop3 email accounts set up on Outlook Express on the home computer for a long time now and wanted to use Outlook 2010 on my laptop for the SAME email accounts.

What I want is for messages to be downloaded to BOTH laptop AND home computer. I have gone into the account settings on each and ticked "Leave a copy of the message on the server" option on both Outlook and Outlook Express, yet if a message is downloaded on one of them, the other one doesn't pick it up?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A:Solved: "Leave a copy of message on server" functionality

Once you download the message from a POP3 server, it's marked as read on the server. It's still there, but most POP3 client default to download only unread messages.

If the email service supports IMAP, use that with Outlook 2010 and Outlook Express. IMAP keeps everything on the server was designed for people using multiple mail clients for the same account.

Some time ago I had troubles with my computer all of a sudden running very slowly. With the help of Cybertech it has improved but there's one thing left I haven't had time to deal with yet.

I sent an email to a few hundred people and for around 40 of them i got this "Warning: message could not send for the past 4 hours" email back. I understand that its not a Fail message and this this is one of those "there are no stupid questions" things but i would like to know:

What does this mean anyway?
Does the person receive my email if i do not get a Failure message after this?
Is there a way that i will not receive this message and only receive total failure messages?

I had the a few hundred other messages go through fine so i don't understand what causes this to happen to just a few dozen emails.

Thank you for being kind to Stupid Questions

A:Solved: What does "Warning: message could not send for the past 4 hours" mean anyway?

Let's say I work for a company whose email goes to; you send to me at [email protected] and get one of those messages back. The message means, in essence, that your mail got to, but some kind of problem with the system prevented the message from being sent to my actual mail server or computer. It's possible that the reason my be that I was fired and you will eventually get a "hard" failure message, but generally it means that abc will fix their system and the message will eventually get to me.

I'm sure there are some exceptions but, in general, I will get the message if you don't latter get a "hard" failure message.
