Dell Computer Charge

Q: Dell Computer Charge

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 computer that is about 3 years old. I just got a new battery for it about 3 or 4 months ago. I'm having trouble with it because I'll have my computer plugged in and it says, (plugged in, not charging). The second I take it off the charger it starts to lose it's charge, but while it's plugged in it holds it. I'm down to 13% and I really don't want to lose my computer. What should I do?

A: Dell Computer Charge

Hi and welcome to TSF did you get the battery from dell or elsewhere as batteries bought from after market sources do not always perform well and if your adapter works then you can still use the laptop admittedly somewhat limited, contact the seller and complain

So, my issue that ive looked everywhere for a solution to is this.  I was about to give this laptop to someone and I reformatted the hard drive to clean it up before doing so.  After this I went to dells site and loaded up the drivers for this machine.  All is fine up till this point.  Then I updated the bios to the newest version a12, and all went fine.

Well, later that day I needed to unplug the laptop and go to a different room and It just turned off after I unplugged it.  It wouldnt turn on with battery power either.  Plugged it back in and it loads fine but the battery is stuck on 36 percent charge and says not charging.  Now im getting a message saying the battery needs to be replaced as well, which is *** because I know that the battery was working just fine before this day.  Not only that why wont a battery with 36 percent charge turn on the laptop?  Its got the flashing red battery symbol when powered on with the ac adapter but without the computer on, but still plugged in, the battery doesnt charge or have any lights.

I have already tried the uninstalling of the acpi trick, as well as the taking the battery out while its running, or taking it out purging the power and reseating.  Ive tried all the common tricks to no avail.  Not sure whats going on but I know this battery was good, and it still says 36 percent but wont charge and wont power the laptop on.  Hope someone can help.

Thanks Gary

A:DELL VOSTRO 3500 BATTERY ISSUE (not charging and wont power on computer with charge) HELP!

First check:  make sure the BIOS (F2 at powerup) recognizes the AC adapter.  If it does not, the battery will not charge.
If the AC adapter is not recognized, try another Dell OEM adapter.  If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the DC jack:
And if that doesn't solve the problem, replace the mainboard.
If the AC adapter IS recognized, but the battery will not charge, unplug the system, remove the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Try again -- if the battery still won't charge, odds are the battery itself is bad.
If the battery is original to the system, it's about four years old - well past its expected lifespan.

A little bit of a long read & story...

A month ago I bought my daughter a used Dell 1545 laptop ( it was PINK so I knew she'd love it). The PSU was working but the cable was in rouigh shape. Also the battery did not hold a charge... the light on the front was blining. I was told it needed a repalcement battery. Now I know it was a gamble since it could have been the charging board, but for the price, my 8 year old daughter has a nice laptop - and doesn't need ( nor do we want to encourage) the mobility of being unplugged.

Unfortunately... my son, trying to be helpful was moving the laptop back up to her room, when he caught the low voltage cord in the door of her room (of course the PSU was not puleed into the laptop). When he plugged the PSU into the wall it popped and sparked. He let the smoke out of it that runs these electronic devices, so now the PSU doesn't work. . i took it apart, but found it was fried... burt and smoked beyond repair.

I ordered a replacement PSU from a place here in Canada.. I will admit it's a non-dell branded one. While I was at it I orded a repalcement "Dr. Battery" battery replacement.

When the parts came in I installed the battery and plugged the new PSU in for a day; when I presented daughter with her working laptop she was excited to not have to plug it in. A couple hours later it was needing to be recharged. WHen the (new) PSU was plugged in a message came up: "Battery @4%, Not charging", and t... Read more

Note that yesterday it was working fine and Charging to 100% without a problem

My laptop will not charge. Sometimes I can get it to work if I wiggle the cord around inside the receptor, but on the whole, it doesnt work. I've replaced the ac cable & the battery so I know they're not the cause, so I only think it can be the receptor itself.

I've bought a new one but have no idea how to fit it. Can anyone help?

Greetings--- I am a novice at fixing problems. When my Dell INSPIRON 8600 LAPTOP boots up it starts with this message " The Ac Power Adapter type cannot be determined. This will prevent optimal system performance" It then gives me 3 choices F1 continue boot -- F2 utility setup -- F3 ignore message in the future.

The laptop will not run unless plugged into charger as the battery is less than 7% charged and I receive a warning about the same.

I have had this laptop for 4 years and have had 0 problems til now.

Does anyone have an idea on what to do now?? Laptops are portable but I have to stay tethered to the cord to use. THANK YOU scoop2.2

Yes, that could be the problem. You need to have the same voltage and other specs per the OEM's requirements.

Your system requires 14. 8V and 11.1V is NOT enough to run it.

You need to get yourself the correct battery and charging unit.

Hello, I'm having this problem with my dell n4010 laptop, which is the same as this picture below:

The ac battery cord was unplugged for a few days without notice, as I was using another computer at the time. But then when I turned the laptop on, it shut off due to low battery, so I plugged the ac battery cord in, to let it charge. The ac battery cord's light is on green, so I assume it was charging, but when I tried to turn the laptop on, it briefly starts up, but nothing shows on the screen, and the three lights that I circled in red in the picture above starts blinking.
The light on the left goes white once, followed by the middle light. But then when it gets to the third light, the light is orange instead of white (like the other two), and then the laptop shuts off.
I don't know what this means. I know the battery was very low, but it somehow managed to stay on when I rebooted my laptop for the first time after a while (I've been using another computer like I said). But I left it charging for like 3+ hours now, and it still does the same thing (first two lights glow white, but then the third light glows orange and the laptop stops making it's usual start-up sounds). Meanwhile, nothing on the screen at all.
Can someone please, please tell me what this means? Do I just need to let it charge for a whole day?? It can't be THAT drained, can it? Or is there something wrong with the battery itself?

A:Dell N4010 Laptop Won't Charge? Please Help Me!

Unplug the system, remove the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Reinstall the battery and connect to AC power -- the  system should then power up.
If it doesn't, retry with the battery disconnected.  If it'll then power up, the battery is bad.
If it won't power up thereafter, the mainboard is bad.

My dell inspiron 1501 laptop is a bit over 2 years old. My 1st power adapter broke after about 2 years. I bought another one ( a dell one on ebay) which broke after a month. I am now using a 3rd party one. It worked fine for a few weeks, but now the battery won't charge, the laptop will only run on AC power. I get an error message during boot up saying the Ac adapter type can't be determined and that the battery will not charge and I will not get optimal performance. I am running winXP home, and I also have ubuntu 8.10 installed as a dual boot. Any help resolving my issue will be greatly appreciated.

99% cases of "unknown AC adapter" issues are connected with wrong or broken PSU. 1% is max8731 faulty(i repaired 2 laptops with this warning, and the problem was with faulty PWM-charger).

Well, my HP laptop charger is not working so I tried to charge with a Dell charger I had and it worked.

Now reading in the internet, I read that it might be dangerous especially since I am using less amps than specified. The specs of the 2 chargers are as follows:

HP Charger: 19 V, 4.74 A
Dell Charger: 19.5 V, 4.62 A

I read that the voltage difference should not cause a problem but using a lower Amp capacity charger than the original might. Will this small difference matter or can I still use the charger?

A:Can I use my Dell Charger to charge my HP Laptop?

In a word... Yes. As long as the Dell chargers connector fits snugly and it doesn't get too hot, it should be fine

The battery is not in good working condition. Replace it. If less than a year old, get it replaced under warranty.
there is a chip in the battery that counts the number of charges. When it reaches a secret maximum it will disallow any more charges. It is a safety feature. It keeps Michael Dell's money safe.

I recently got a second-hand Dell Latitude D600. The battery was already charged when I got it but it wouldn't recharge at all. I assumed the battery was a gonna and eventually bought a brand new one. However this won't charge up either. I can still run the laptop from the battery (as long as there is some charge left in it). At the moment I'm having to use the AC mostly.

I suspected it may be a BIOS problem, but thats now been flashed. I've tried all kinds of combinations (AC power up, then battery in etc) but nothing. The new battery works as I've been able to charge it on a relatives laptop.

I'm stumped. Any advise you wise people can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all,
I have recently purchased a D430 laptop that comes with Vista. I found that there is no way I can set the charging scheme (i.e. charge only when battery power falls to xx%, etc that I found in my old IBM one). I don't want it to cycle at high percentages as it would degrade the battery fast. Removing the battery is not a good solution - it seems this model is designed to have the battery attached all the time.
Any suggestions?

When I start my computer I get an error message stating that my battery is unable to charge and the AC adapter type is not recognised.

I have read about this being a problem with Bios and have tried the CMD-->"cd desktop"--> "1555_A16.exe/ forceit" that is spoken about in forums to no avail.

Wondering if there is a problem with the battery as I bought a new charger and that hasn't changed the situation either.

I have the Dell Power Companion PW7015L (bought through my cost center from Dell retail) and a Del-issued (I work for Dell)l Latitude E7240.  When I charge my Samsung Galaxy S5 phone, things work fine. The Power Companion shows 5 bars for charge level and 5 for battery health.  However, when I plug in my laptop and hit the power button for the Power Companion, the "charging" indicator never comes on, and the "plugged in, not charging" icon comes on for 15-28 seconds, and then goes off (and the screen dims):  apparently the batter disconnects from the laptop, or the laptop disconnects itself.  If I hit the power button on the power companion, the "plugged in, not charging" icon will come back on, and then again go out after 15-28 seconds.  Help!  #IworkforDell.

I have had my dell inspiron e1505 for about 4 years now. I have gone through two batteries, but actually currently have the original battery back in my computer because it lasted longer than the replacement.
However, my computer will no longer charge the battery....

My friend has the exact same computer so I have done a few tests...
For help in communication here is some annotation:

My computer:
computer A
Power cord A
Battery A

computer B
Power cord B
Battery B

I put my battery A in her computer B...and her computer B charged my battery A with her power cord B, but not with my power cord A.

I tried to use her power cord B on my computer A, but my battery A still would not charge...

I put her battery B, into my computer A, but it would not charge with EITHER power cord A or B....

So...I think I have come to a conclusion that something is broke inside my computer....
Is there something on the motherboard that chatges that battery?
Or, could it possibly be something easier to fix...
I am a student studying abroad in Rome right now, and computer parts aren't really readily available....

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 Laptop - the original Dell AC Power Adapter crapped out and was replaced with a universal Targus adapter. This powered the laptop well for approximately two weeks, however the laptop stopped working overnight and now refuses to boot.

When I plug in the adapter, no lights appear. The laptop does not respond in any way when I push the power button, it doesn't matter if it's plugged in, not plugged in, battery in, battery out. The charging port on the machine does not appear to be loose. The adapter comes with a handful of different tips, and was tested on my Acer Aspire and is in good working order.

I've read that this model laptop (or maybe just Dells in general) has issues with universal/aftermarket chargers, but in those cases the laptop will generally still run off AC power even if the batteries won't charge. I read somewhere else that these symptoms point to a fault with the internal power supply board, but I don't even know what that is or what it looks like.

If anyone has any information on this problem, or on troubleshooting and repairing a PSB fault (if that even matches my symptoms) it's very greatly appreciated.

A:Dell Inspiron 1501 no charge, no boot, no nothing

Yes, you probably damaged the charging circuits/motherboard by using an after-market AC adapter... These charging circuits may be part of a $300+ motherboard. Good luck

Hi guys,

I have a laptop I'm working on that will not turn on/ charge. I've tried a different adapter to no avail. I've also taken a battery from an equally rated Dell Inspiron (different model) laptop and it does not turn on with that either.

I've replaced the charging component off a motherboard before but this one is different as it is not simply a connector that goes from the charging outlet and plugs into the motherboard somewhere. It is just a piece that is soldered on and I can't tell what route it's taking.

I've tested the charger using a multimeter and it outputs ~ 19.5v so it should be fine. Any ideas?

EDIT: After doing some research online, I found that the center pin of the charger 'port' (on motherboard) sometimes goes in. Has anyone replaced one of these? If so, do you just unsolder it and solder in the new one? Someone mentioned putting some solder in the center and that fixes it?

A:Solved: Dell Inspiron E1505 Won't Charge / Turn on

Does anything at all happen when you try to power it up, any lights flashing or sounds ?

If it doesn't work with a charged up battery there is a hardware problem inside the laptop.
If it was just the power socket it should still work from battery power.

I would try charging the problem laptop's battery in the other laptop then try it in the problem laptop.

Hello, I've researched extensively for a solution to why my brand new battery and AC Adapter won't fully charge.
When I first turned on the computer it charged to around 72 percent.
Then after the first recharge, it only went up to around 48 percent.
Repeated again, and only got around 39 percent and now it seems to stay there.
I've updated the BIOS already, tried uninstalling the ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery Driver and reinstalling it.
So my question is, is there any place I can download an updated driver?
The one on my computer states that its from 06/21/2006. Perhaps there's an updated driver somewhere?
My Operating System is Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

Hi, everyone - I have a dell e4300 - actually I have three. On one, when it is plugged in to charge, the blue light that indicates that it is plugged in and charging, which normally would be blue continuously, is blinking, or oscillatiing, off and on.

I bent the pin on the inside of the cord slightly in order to maybe get a better contact, and bent the barrel slightly for same reason - the blinking is the same.

So, it does not quite seem like this is a weak, variable connection. Also, I get the same thing with another charger cable. Does this mean something?

Well ,the more I look at this, the less regular it seems, but it does come on momentarily every several seconds. It sure is not charged up, despite being plugged in for over 24 hours.

Hi everyone,

My name is Tarun. I have been facing an issue with my newly purchased battery. I did not use my laptop for an year or so because my battery was dead and i didn't even remove that dead battery from the laptop, it was kept inserted for an year. A few days ago I purchased a new battery. When I turned on my laptop with the new battery and tried to charge it, I saw its charged percentage as 7%, I thought that it will be fully charged within an hour or so but it didn't. Although, when I hover the mouse on the battery icon ( right bottom under the tray ), it displays the message as 7% available (plugged in, CHARGING )....Please note, i wrote "charging".

To my surprise, percentage of "battery charging" never increases, I do not know what's wrong with it. Adapter works fine, windows runs fine, everything seems to be working fine.

I discussed with a naive person who repairs laptops. He wasnt sure of the fault but he guessed that that there could be a problem with charging IC. I didn't agree with him because of two reasons, 1st- he is a naive person, 2nd- If charging IC has a problem then it shouldn't have displayed the message " plugged in, CHARGING".

I am pretty much frsutrated and dissappointed. Could someone please help me and let me know what should be/ can be done?

thanks & regards
Tarun Bajpai

Hi Folks
I have a Dell Latitude Rugged Tablet 7202 and HAVIS 602-02 Mobile Dock that will not charge.
The original Lind Power Supply has the ID chip for 45 watts. HAVIS sent my a 90 watt cable. I can see the difference when I go to BIOS. Under battery one cable displays 45 watts the other 90 watts.
HAVIS tech support indicated the problem is Dell. I am hoping that I don't get bounced back and forth between Dell and HAVIS.
Anyone have a similar issue?
Have ruled out the power source by using 2 different high quality regulated switching power supplies. These power supplies run sensitive electronics, the power is good.
When booting up in the dock the BIOS generates a message to select running without charging. In this condition the dock features all work perfectly, by the batteries can't be charged.
When the tablet is separated from the dock, charging with either cable (45/90 watts) charging is perfect.

It could be the power supply; but, the most delicate of those components is the jack in the computer. If it's the jack, get ready for an expensive repair or a new laptop.

This happens to be the most common type of laptop damage, the Achilles heel of all laptop PCs.

I've been using a Dell inspiron 1545 from about 3 years now and exactly after 2 years of my buy, the battery failed and it started showing me to replace the battery and always notified me about contacting dell for a new battery.
I didn't take this of much concern so i just ignored the message and kept on using my battery with my adapter plugged in. After 4-5 months of such usage, My battery completely failed and doesn't even offer me even a minute of backup, when i remove the power socket. Then i realized the importance of a new battery and then bought a new battery from Dell.
Its the same battery with the same specs and also the same family type. After i removed my defected battery, I replaced my new bought Dell battery and realized that my battery is working fine. its charging well but at some time, it says "Plugged in, But not charging" Which is rare for any new battery, which is bought brand new.

This is how it looks now after i remove the AC adapter plug and when i depend on the battery backup. it is providing me a backup, but I see a yellow exclamatory mark beside it. Which I think should not be present. it also says "Low battery" when there's already 99% of battery left!
I've also followed some online steps
1) updated by BIOS to the latest  2) Followed some other steps like uninstalling the battery ACI in the device manager and etc...
i would love to get this problem solved. I'm using a PA-12 family adapt... Read more

A:Bought a new dell battery and still my laptop battery doesn't charge!

Hi Utkarsh. I Actually FIXED this problem months back. and I exactly want to help you on this so that you can fix it yourself too..
the problem which is creating your battery to show an exclamatory mark is your power settings.
so follow these steps to get rid of that sign and a perfectly working battery.
1) Click on your battery icon (left click) you should see an option called " More power options" at the bottom of the popup.
click "More power options"
2) Now you will be taken to your control panel where you can see all of your power plans and under each plan, you will see an option called "Change plan settings"
3) Click on "Change plan settings" for your active power plan. Now you will get redirected to another control panel window, where you can see two kind of power options to get adjusted. that is, when you battery is plugged and when your battery is unplugged.
4) Don't touch those options, just click on "Change advanced power settings" at the bottom left of that window. THIS IS THE AREA WHERE WE NEED TO FIX!
5)After you click on "Change advanced power setttings", you will see a POWER options popup, go to the bottom and then you can see something called "Battery" with a plus sign on the left. click it.
6) Now you just have to change the levels for the following values
--> Critical battery level ( you can change it to 10%)

I've looked through the archives a little and haven't found anything about this topic, so I thought I would ask. The battery charges just fine with the computer off, but with the computer on, the little battery icon flashes on and off once the battery gets to a lower level. What that level is I don't really know. Also, and I'm afraid of the response to this, but I have to position the A/C adapter cord to a certain angle to get a good connection. I've tried cleaning the contacts to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Battery will charge with computer off only

Perhaps two problems. The positioning of the cord means something wrong with it or the plug on the laptop. The charging problem might be a problem with the charging circuit in the laptop (MB). Would be nice to blame it all on the laptop plug, but not sure we can do that.

Alright, so, my friend has a Zaio model pcg-61a12l laptop running on Windows 7. Earlier today we were at school trying to use it but it wouldn't turn on and she didn't have the charger. We just assumed it had died.
She took it home, and told me that she tried to plug in her laptop and it would not charge. The light on the charger is on, so it's not plugged into the wrong outlet or anything, but the laptop is not receiving any charge and is still not turning on.

She's freaking out because it's a pretty expensive laptop and doesn't want her father to get mad about it.

I asked if she had downloaded anything or banged it against something and she said she hasn't. That she had even tried taking the battery out and putting it back in and it still won't work.

Any ideas? It's hard because I don't have the laptop with me, I'm on the phone with her /: But I'll have it tomorrow if it's not working then, so any ideas will be MUCH appreciated.

She's only had the laptop for about a month

A:Computer won't turn on or Charge

Hey Elegiacxiii

Try these steps, this has proved helpful to many users having this problem.

1. Disconnect the AC Supply
2. Remove the battery
3. Connect the AC Adapter
4. Startup

IMPORTANT: Before you try out these remaining steps, be sure to create a restore point, lest some problem may creep in. (Go To Control Panel --> System and Security --> System --> System Protection (on the left pane) --> Create).

5. Open Device Manager
Under the Batteries category, right-click all of the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listings, and select Uninstall (sometimes you may have only one, this is perfectly okay)
6. Shutdown your Vaio
7. Disconnect the AC Supply
8. Insert the battery
9. Connect the AC Adapter
10. Startup

IMPORTANT: If this doesn't work be sure to restore your system. (Go To Start --> Search System Restore --> Recommended restore --> Confirm)

Hope this resolves your problem, if it doesn't feel free to post it here. There are many more personnel who can help you solve your problem. Stay with us.

I have recently been speaking to someone in the Malware forum to try and get rid of a virus. He told me that now everything looks good on my system and that my new problem would have to be software/hardware related and I should come over here and talk.

When I plus in my charger it does not charge the battery. I had this problem before, so I took the charger to the store and got a new one. For a while it was charging and then just last night, it stopped charging again. Basically, I have about 30 minutes left on my computer and if I use that up, I will not be able to turn on my computer again.

The recent occurence happened after on the other forum I did a cleaning of Windows. I am not sure if the two are related, but I would really like to be able to use my computer and not have it shut off permanently.

I have posted a link to my other conversations on the Malware forum. Please help!

Hello fellow techies,
I have a situation with my Compaq Evo N600c battery or something in that directions, so I need possible solutions. My laptop needs to be plugged in at all times, which makes it frustrating because its a portable laptop. If it becomes unplugged the laptop will turn off within 10 seconds flat. I fear that this will, if it hasnt already done so, mess up my electric circuits among other components. Can any of you suggest or recommend options I can use to diagnose the situation. I would like to find out what the problem is, whether I should buy a new battery or some component or prong that I need to replace? Thanks for the feed back!

A:Battery will not charge or hold charge?!?!

Yup, sounds like a battery problem.

First, make sure the battery has a charge. Most laptop batteries have a button on them somewhere you can push that will give you the power level. Alternativly, there should be a utility in windows or the BIOS that will allow you to check the power level.

If the battery has no charge and isn't charging, then replace it with a known good one and see if it will charge up when the laptop is plugged in.

If the good battery won't charge up, then there is a problem with your motherboard.

If the battery has charge but won't power the system, then there is a problem with your motherboard too.

If this is the case, then the best you can do is contact the laptop manufacturer and get them to replace the motherboard.

My g/f's computer is running XP and recently its commitment charge is currently triple what you would think is normal (700mb instead of 200mb) from what i can ascertain there are no extra processes running and cpu operation is running around 50% +40% -10%. The odd thing is, the computer has 512mb of ram but even when its sitting on 700mb its slow but not standstill slow.

I have rebooted into safe mode and attempted using zone alarm suite, and webroot spysweeper; but both came up with errors requiring restart.

I used the trendmicro housecall online scan in normal operation which did not find anything.

I will post a hijack this log and give pc specs when i'm over there next.

Is it possible that there is a stupid bug that fools task manager into false data considering the pc still works at 800mb charge??

All confusedly,

Currently my PC completely died and every time I try to plug in the charger the light simply blinks a few times and nothing happens. HELP!'

A:Charger blinking orange but computer won't charge

Blink orange is an indication of : The battery has reached a low battery level, a critical battery level , or there is a battery error. Try the following steps Shut down the system and disconnect all the external devices connected to the PC.Disconnect the AC power from the wall outlet. Remove the battery from its compartment.Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds continuously. Now put back the battery & reconnect it to the AC power wall outlet. If the notebook it coming on try performing battery test using F2 diagnosis?s. Turn off you unit ? restart ? keep tapping esc at startup Press F2 from the status up list and perform a battery test. Depending on the results we may suggest you. Please click on the below link to view the steps.

Hi,Yesterday, I was using my laptop when I noticed the battery was going down. It seemed to be an adapter issue, because there are two lights on the laptop. Light A: Connection light signalling that the power cord is connected.Light B: Charge light signalling that the battery is charging. Both lights were off.  At my school, we have the same adapters for little Netbook computers. I borrowed one of these chargers with the consent of the school Techs.  When I plugged the new charger in, my laptop was off. Both Light A and B were on. I tried turning on my computer, but it wouldn't. I disconnected the adapter and battery and held down the power button for a minute. I plugged in my charger, but it still wouldn't turn on. I plugged in my Battery as well, and noticed Light B turned on. The battery was charging. I unplugged the Adapter and attempted to turn on my laptop. It worked. Both Lights were off, the Battery was in, and it worked.  However, when I plug the adapter back in, Light A turns on and Light B doesn't. When it plugs in, the battery symbol changes to charging symbol, but only for a few seconds. It then returns to the normal battery symbol. When it shows the plugged in symbol, it says 'Plugged in, not charging'.  When I shut it down or have it in sleep mode - the operating system is not running, both Light A and B turn on with the Adapter and Battery plugged in. When it turns on, the battery has clearly increased in charg... Read more

I tired removing the data lines, so that only the charging lines were connected... and then plugged in my iPhone. After a little googling, I found this: MintyBoost - The mysteries of Apple device charging which outlines clearly why my iPhone does not charge...

Is there any way to leave the data lines connected, but remove the ability to transmit or recieve data? Thinking maybe via bios or a third party application...

My computer is a Dell inspiron 14R (2011). It crashed yesterday and now it refuses to boot up. Thinking it might be the battery problem, I tried charging it. I know my charger is working because of the charging light but when I plug it in, the light turns off so I'm assuming the computer doesn't want to charge. Does this mean my processor or something has shortcircuited?

Hey Folks,

I have some questions for those of you that provide consulting services and bill clients for your work.

The questions are geared towards the time consuming process of malware cleaning and overall system protection and updating. So let's get to it...

Let's say I have a client with a personal computer. They have 80GB of actual data all on the same drive as the OS, they have very little protection in place, their OS is multiple service packs behind, and they have multiple unknown pieces of malware on the system.

Now that I think about this I could have questions dealing with billing as well as questions on how you would handle a situation in the fastest possible manner, but I'll put those second set of questions in a different forum category. Here is the second set of questions:

So let's say you go through the normal process of running the 2 to x number of tools you normally would run to clear of malware. You also go through your own personal investigation to catch things not found by the anti-malware tools. You then proceed with installing your recommended tools (paid or free)... like anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, innoculation programs and so forth. You also go through the process of patching the OS with the latest service packs and patches that the user hasn't done. You also update all the applications that have been waiting to be updated tha... Read more

A:How do you bill / charge for malware removal and computer updates?

I recently had a nightmare repair for a business client that had a somewhat slower notebook, massive amount of business applications installed and a huge amount of data on the drive.

He did not want to blow the unit away and start from scratch... even if we did it is a 6 to 8 hour process to get everything he has back on the system (if he doesn't have an image) and he didn't.

He started with several of the major fake anti-spyware packages installed and multiple other malware pieces. Here the process I sort of went through:

- Made full backup/image of system so data could be recovered if need be. So many applications the data isn't always in my documents. (80GB of actual data on drive). Actually connected SATA notebook drive into system to get fastest SATA to SATA transfer and not via USB. Still took 1.5 hours.

- Started removal process of all the malware. Had to manually do some repairs just to be able to run some tools as well as use CD bootable based tools. This took several hours.

- His system started locking up intermittently so obviously something was whacked. After a fair amount of examination my only option was to restore to an older image I made 3 months earlier. Restore took and hour and 15 minutes.

- I then started took the latest image and started restoring data files (that would be scanned for issues) and stored all the current data. This took almost an hour.

- I then started updating the system as it is now 3 months behind on updates.

- So... Read more

Recently, I disconnected the AC power supply to be able to work elsewhere in the house.  When I reconnected the AC power supply and left the computer on the computer had gone into a hybernate mode.  It did awaken and I could continue until the task was finished.  Again I left the computer on.  When I returned the screen was dark and I assumed that it had reverted to the hybernate mode.  However it would not resume.  I checked the socket on the computer for the light which would indicate that power is being fed to the computer.  It was DARK.  Since the power supply is plugged into a power strip, I checked to make sure the strip was on.  The indicator light remained DARK.  I plugged to power supply into a known live outlet.  The indicator light remained DARK.  Using a volt meter, I found that the AC outlet was good and the output at the DC end of the power supply showed 19.88 volts DC.  At this point I assumed that the Power Jack Cable Harness had broken somehow. Searching the internet, HP support, and HP forum pages revealed no clear solution.  I left a message on "HP Support Forum Home>Notebooks>Hardware>Re: Charging Pin and Power Connector Broken"on 6-20-16 but have had no reply at this time except to offer a phone conversation. Since then, I needed to have access to the information on the hard drive.  Removing the hard drive meant that the top of the computer had to be removed. &nb... A:Sudden computer failure - won't charge but AC Charger output...

Well, assuming the AC adapter is good (which appears to be the case) then it is either the power jack harness or the motherboard itself. I am a bit confused how the light on the AC adapter brick stays dark when the output is testing OK. I assume you have removed the battery and tried to hold down the "on" button 30 seconds. There are lots of power-related daughterboards like the power button board and it is so hard to test them. Do you have the Manual: Service Manual

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with Windows Vista OS. I have a Dell 926 printer interfaced to it via USB. Printer driver is installed and the printer does communicate at times with the computer and does a good job printing. However, intermittently when trying to print a document I'll get a message on the computer that says that communication has been lost and print job failed.

I've checked all connections to make sure they are solid and no debris that might cause this.
That has not corrected the problem.
The other thing that happens is that the document I want to print will stay in the print queue/spooler and if I shut the computer and printer down and restart both it will print the job. And it may continue to print jobs but it's just a matter of time.

Needless to say this is frustrating. I can print several jobs in a row with no problem and then I'll get this "communication has been lost between printer and computer". And I have to go thru the procedure above to get the last job printed.

My wife doesn't understand how this works and will try to print the same job several times with the commo problem and then complains when it won't print.....and then they all print when the above procedure is followed.

Any ideas what is going on??? Any fixes??

The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

thus at least at this point not able to connect with my cable internet. Cable people told me I needed the drivers.Any suggestions or can it just not be done.

You will have to go to the dell website look under support and then drivers and downloads for your model of computer. If you use the service tag number on the computer it will make sure you get the correct ones you need. For future reference so you wont have this hassle again burn all of the drivers to a cd so you will be all set the next time.

I have a two year old Dell PC with Windows 7. I got a virus in my computer that by phone and computer takeover Norton located in my MBR. When they cleaned it my computer will no longer boot up. Norton worked with me for three days on the problem but we were unable to fix the computer. I followed other web sites and repaired my MBR but it still will not boot up. I tried System Repair, Check point, Image, and Dell system restore and all failed. I have tried to use the Windows install CD and all I get is a black screen with a flashing cursor and then after 3 minutes the compute attempts to boot again and fails. I tried everything to try and wipe the drive from C prompt and it will not let me. I have very weak computer skills but I can follow directions and I have wiped a previous computer I owned. (I confirmed that my CD drive is working) I also should mention I have a second hard drive on my computer that I backed everything up to.

A:Dell Computer PC will not load Windows install CD from computer crash

See if you can reset the BIOS hardware/software connections and then clear the CMOS to access your Windows 7 install disc.
Resetting hardware/software connections in the BIOS and clearing temporary memory of corruption:Shut down and turn off the computer.
Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).
"Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station, disconnect
cables to printers or devices such as external monitors, USB memory sticks or SD cards, headset or external speakers, mouse or auxiliary keyboard, turn off WIFI and Bluetooth wireless devices." (Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues HP Pavilion dv5000 Notebook PC series - HP Customer Care (United States - English))
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This closes the circuit and ensures all
power from components is drained to clear the software connections between the BIOS
and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
(If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall. Do not reconnect any unnecessary peripherals; monitor, keyboard,
and mouse should suffice and be the only peripherals reconnected.
Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware

Clear the CMOS:Use your system manual to find instructions for accessing the BIOS...
In the BIOS, go to the EXIT screen...
Choose load setup/optimized defaults... Read more

A:Dell computer Help

Have u looked in the BIOS and mad sure the CD is the first boot device, this should be installable (changeable) in the BIOS, altho your BIOS might not have that option, and u can leave it that way as it will not mess up anything. Once u boot to the Windows CD u should have options to format or anything u need to do.

I would like to install a new video card for my dell machine. Here is a list of my specs...

Dell Inspiron 531s
Windows 7 32-bit
Power Supply Unit: 250w
1 PCI-Express slot

Current Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430
(motherboard gpu)

Here is the GPU I'm looking at: - SPARKLE SFPX95GT512U2L GeForce 9500 GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards
I am concerned about the weak power supply and the motherboard GPU interfering.

Should I be considering a external power booster?

I would love to hear your suggestions.

A:New GPU for Dell Computer

I would look at the power supply and see if a normal size new power supply would fit into that case, if not I would "re-case" the whole machine when I add the new video card so I wouldnt have any power issues.

Hi, I recently reinstalled XP on my Uncle's Dell Dimension 4550. I installed everything and the drivers and I noticed in the device manager that there is one device with the dreaded yellow question mark. The device is the pci simple communications controller. What exactly is this driver and how do I fix it? If it has something to do with an internet connection he has a cable modem with a router as well. Not sure if that would help or not.

Hi, and welcome to Techspot.
Your question is a little confusing, bios and dos are two completely different things...
Maybe you should read a little about BIOS on this website.
If you need to enter BIOS you probably have to press F2 when the DELL logo shows up right after you start your computer. You don't need any CDs or USB flash drives to enter BIOS.

Just got a Walmart Dell pre-loaded with Windows Vista. I will be putting windows XP Professional on the drive instead. Only problem is there is no way to get the damn machine to boot from the CD rom so I can clobber the current format and re-format the drive NTFS and then proceed to load XP.

Even tried using a USB bootable cd drive instead of the SERIAL ATA DVD drive that comes with the machine. even after specifying the boot sequence order in the DELL cmos, still no luck... any suggestions? Machine is a Dell e521 model.

I am sort of befuddled as to why a friends computer will not turn on. There is a green light on the mobo indicating that there is power to the computer, but no luck starting up. I have replaced the power button switch on the front of the computer, checked all power connections to the power supply and motherboard, made sure the outlet was good, and am at a loss as what to check for. She says that there was not a storm before having this problem, but did tell me her daughter shut down the computer by just pushing the power button. I didn't think it was that much of a deal seeing as how the computer is 3 yrs old, but I could be wrong. Any help would be much appreciated.

A:Dell computer will not turn on

Dell computers have a nasty habit of "locking up" at times. sometimes unplugging the computer and letting it sit for 30 minutes then plugging it back in will solve the problem and sometimes you have to strip the components and add them piece by piece until you get it working again.

the process is to remove ALL components except the processor( including disconnnecting monitor, keyboard, mouse). plug in and power up shut down unplug, add memeory plugin and power up, unplug add hard drive plugin power up, power off, unplug, add video card( if there is one) power up at this point you should be able to tell if it is booting or not. (actually once you start getting beeps during the add component\power up process it should be able to boot once all components are reinstalled.

it is a pain in the rear but it is the process Dell tech support would lead you thru if you called them. ( I had to do it three times. with my 4 year old dell, once it locked up after I switched a optical drive.) oh yeah before i forget each time you shutdown during the adding component process, after you unplug hold in the power button for several seconds to drain any residual power.

None work. the diag says hd is fine. I'd like to reformat/reload xp on hard drive and can't. On another computer I can get the comuter to boot from the xp cd and it works

Hello all, I'm newer to RAM and things like that and wanted to know before I buy if these sticks of ram will run in my Dell DImension 4700. I was hoping someone knew the specs of the stock motherboard and such because I have no idea what it is. THanks

A:Older Dell computer

Follow the instructions here so we can help you better:

Are you lookng to add RAM or just replace it?

According to google, the Dell Dimension 4700 has DDR2 RAM at 400 MHz. Both links you posted have DDR2 RAM at faster speeds, so while you can add both of them, I believe, they'll still run at the slower speed unless you take out the older RAM.
