Constantly freezing when trying to do anything - Brand new install

Q: Constantly freezing when trying to do anything - Brand new install

I had to reinstall Vista on a laptop but even opening internet explorer causes it to freeze, not just IE, same with other programs.

I installed Firefox today, the only thing that has been installed and it is the same.

It is showing the 2gb ram so that isn't the problem.
It never had the problem before when it also had Vista.

Any ideas?

Please post the make and model of your machine....
If it is a custom built machine please post the motherboard model
CPU specs
Graphics Card Specs
RAM installed
and PSU brand and wattage.

For now if you have a desktop take off the side panel and clean out all the dust inside with a can of air. If you have a laptop clean all dust and dirt from the air vents on the side and underneath.

All though you have done a reinstall of Windows try defraging the hard drive update all drivers starting with the chipset drivers then update graphics drivers Audio than LAN drivers.

Just built a new computer. Asus Rampage Extreme III mobo, PNY Geforce 470, 6gb OCZ ram, 800w PSU, Intel i7-930. Windows 7 pro 32

It is constantly freezing during games and during video playback, like netflix or youtube. Some times it will freeze right away, sometimes after hours of play. On a bad day it just makes doing anything impossible. I get two types of freezes. One, the audio continues to go, the screen is just frozen, forcing me to reset. Other is it will freeze in game, with no audio, forcing a reset, and I get a BCCode 116 error. I reinstalled windows and all drivers last night, dont get a BCCode anymore on reset, but it continues to freeze just the same. I have checked temps and power and everything seems to be good. All the drivers are the latest. I haven't loaded the newer bios for my mobo yet, but last time I did that before the windows reinstall, it didnt help anyways. All I can think of is some crazy driver issue that I just cant tell, or maybe something physically wrong with the video card?

Help needed!

Hello, I purchased a M900 Thinkcentre desktop a few months ago, right away I was having issues with the computer freezing randomly. Nothing works when the computer freezes and I'm forced to do a hard reboot each time. The computer will freeze in the middle of literally anything I'm doing, no rhyme or reason as far as I can tell. I've even stepped away and come back to the machine frozen on the screensaver while I had no applications running in the background. Being a new computer this is very strange and I've tried to troubleshoot the issue and find a fix, but with no luck. Has anyone encountered similar problems or has any idea what the underlying issue may be? Some specs: Processor:  Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 3408 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)(RAM):  16.0 GBGraphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 720OS: Windows 10 64bit

Hey guys!

So, I've just re installed 7 Ultimate x64 on my desktop because my prior installation had been giving me grief.

My issue is that it is now intermittently freezing.

I assume the issue is related to drivers because I've tested my memory via memtest, and I ran DFT on my (brand new) HD.

My specs are as follows,

BFG GTX260 Core216
Intel Core2Quad q8400
8GB OCZ DDR2 PC6400 800Mhz
Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM
TX850 Modular PSU

I've downloaded the latest drivers for my motherboard and video card from the respective manufacturers websites. (ASUS, Nvidia)

ASUS website only lists the chip set and audio driver for my board.

Any ideas? The issue is extremely intermittent. I can go 35 minutes without freezing sometimes, and sometimes its immediately after booting up.

These were all probably caused by NETw5s64.sys which is part of your intel wifi driver. I do note that they may in fact be caused by utorrent (running at the time in all of them)forcing the wifi driver to fail
I would uninstall the driver and get a fresh copy. I would also think about using a different torrent client

I've always thought so highly of HP and as such, decided to purchase an HP laptop - an HP Envy 15-K233ca Notebook. I have had some issues from the start and one in particular, is making for a rather unpleasant experience. The wifi connection keeps dropping.  It drops when the system is put in sleep mode, when I surf the net and even after a reboot.   I walked through the issue (and a few others) with HP's  help desk this evening and after 2 hours was met with the same problem.  I am now having to reboot the computer and troubleshoot to try and maintain a wifi connection.  This is my first experience with an HP Laptop and I'm disappointed.  It's unfortunate, but I may have to return it.  I'll be walking over to Apple for a replacement.   If someone from HP can resolve this for once and for all, it would be helpful. Otherwise, I will have no choice but to return the unit. Note:  I've noticed that others experience the same issue.  I requested that HP's Help Desk install drivers to resolve the issue.  If this didn't work after our session this evening, then I'm afraid it may be a hardware issue.

Hello, Thank you for taking time to respond.  It appears that the box was already unchecked.  Good idea though as others may have this checked and can hopefully look into this solution.  I asked tech support in India to download drivers that could rectify the issue.  It appears to have worked. Thank you again.Madison.

Hello. I'm not sure if this is the right section, so if it is wrong please move it.

My friend recently purchased the parts to a gaming computer, and put it together successfully, but it is having issues freezing.

I tried searching through other forums and found some possible issues, but it didn't seem like they were the issue. The CPU temperature was 129 degrees F and the 12v thingy (sorry I'm not very computer savvy) said it was at 12.049v. Also, the Memory Diagnostics Tool didn't find any issues with the memory. It generally crashes when we are playing games and the CPU usage is around 40ish percent.

It was even freezing during the windows updates right after installing windows, but we wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas before we re-installed windows. Btw, it is running Windows 7.

Anyway, here is the parts list: link

Any help is appreciated. Thank you

I was really pleased with it until today! I completed all the necessary updates that HP support assistant prompted me to do which included a BIOS update. My laptop has frozen FOUR times this evening, ctrl alt del does not work and I have to hold down the power button to restart the laptop. I have not been doing anything tasking on the laptop or running a multitude of apps etc. I have only had the internet open with a couple of pages and word! This is ridiculous for a laptop that is brand new and it wasn't cheap either! After doing some digging on the internet, I've found that I am not the only person with this problem. Please can HP contact me regarding a solution ASAP or I will have to return the laptop which is very frustrating. Thank you

Hello all,

I have a brand new Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, and it's worked fine for 3 weeks now, but now I am having this problem:

After trying to install a printer yesterday (a Canon Pixma ip2600), the screen froze up. I got the little arrow that goes in circles, and I waited, and nothing happened. So, I cut the computer off, and cut it back on. Only to find that it would freeze up again while doing something normal, like using firefox.

It's been freezing up pretty much every time I try to use it since last night, and I've gotten these messages a few times:

When turning the computer back on, I get the black screen message about a disc check, and the type is NTFS, and the volume is OS.

Now, when the computer freezes up, I get this message after about 5 minutes of waiting: "Failure- Security Options
Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog."

I tried to do a system restore, and It says, "Windows has detected file system corruption on OS (C)" It asks if I want to do a disc check, but then it tells me it can't because the disc is already in use. Even if I do a disc check on startup, though, nothing is different.

So.... any ideas? I've already uninstalled the printer, I've disabled windows defender, the sidebar is disabled, and I use Windows Live Onecare, and have been using that since day one without any problems. I did recently download MS Office.

Any help would be appreciated.... I'm trying n... Read more

Hi, I bought a brand new computer. It's been freezing when I leave it alone for about ten minutes or so. The whole computer stops. I shake the mouse and everything, and nothing works.

We have disabled Vista turning off the hard drive, we've turned off the screensaver, we've turned off the computer shutting down. This is the computer I have. All I've gotten on it has been firefox and an antivirus program and a couple of other protection programs. If I leave it alone, it will freeze. I feel stupid that I paid so much for a computer that won't even work, but I'm coming to ask you guys if there's something I'm not doing.

I would really like this computer to work if possible. Thank you so much for your time and if I'm screwed, well, thank you anyway. I hope you all have a great day.

A:Brand new computer keeps freezing

If it's brand new, it should still be under warranty. If you bought it online, you could make arrangements to RMA the unit back to the seller or manufacturer (whichever is applicable). Trying to fix it yourself could void the warranty.

Just curious, if the computer is brand new, how come it came with Vista?

I bought a new HP laptop a week ago and it seemed like a fantastic machine. However it kept freezing to the point where I had to hold down the power button to turn off. Went back to retailer and did a straight swap. However the new laptop (same model) is exactly the same. Freezes randomly, I may be browsing, or in a word document or reading a pdf and it will just freeze. I'm not very technical but have updated drivers etc. A few days ago upon startup the BIOS updated.  I'm completely confused and have spent a lot of money on the laptop. I have a brand new Dell M5010 laptop that I bought from Best Buy about a week ago. It freezes and locks up (with the famous Not Responding in the application windows) for up to 4 minutes!! i can't have this happening. I honestly run about 5 programs - FireFox, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Outlook, and WAMP server.

I took it back to Best Buy and they had me whip it clean and do a clean install. I do not use any torrent applications or download anything, so why is this happening?? Once I whipped it clean and reinstalled all my applications, it started going it again. I can tell when it's going to happen, because I hear the processor clicks...and then everything freezes. Dear computer experts,

After you helped me diagnose the fatal issues on my last laptop, I purchased a brand new Asus 17" Laptop with 2.10 GHz Intel processor, 4 gigs of RAM, 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium. I have installed McAfee security suite, Carbonite back-up, and recently added Office 2010.

The problem: it freezes at inexplicable moments. When I first received it in mid-August, it froze two times, but I attributed that to the enormous multi-day transfer of my carbonite backup. It behaved wonderfully, until yesterday. Two days in a row it has frozen while IE was up with a few standard websites (google, gmail), an office document or two, and outlook. I want to prevent/catch/repair any problem that may exist asap and hopefully fix it. McAfee scans come back clean.

I appreciate your help and ideas!

A:brand new laptop freezing troubles

I would be suspicious of a problem that needs warranty attention based on your statement When I first received it in mid-August, it froze two times, but I attributed that to the enormous multi-day transfer of my carbonite backupI would attribute that to it having problems right from the start.I've run computers at 100% CPU for days at a time in the past doing batch video encodes. No Problems occurred.Any computer should be able to run for days at a full load with no problems. Laptops can be a problem due to their compromised cooling systems. Compromised in cooling capacity to save weight, space and battery with a smaller fan. However running while doing a Carbonite restore does not come under that heading.Power glitches should not affect a laptop either as they come with a built-in UPS, Their battery.Good LuckRoger

I am not sure if this fits in this category or not, but I just built a new computer with:

Asus M2A-VM mobo (has Integrated ATI Radeon X1250-based graphics card)
AMD Athlon X2 6000+ - (with arctic silver 5 thermal paste)
2 GB DDR2 PC800Mhz RAM
500W PSU

Its in an antec 900 case, so there are 4 fans to keep it cool. My issue is that I just installed vista, and after a little while, the computer always freezes. Sometimes the monitor will say 'no input signal,' sometimes some pixels will seem to be shifted slightly, and once the screen turned a small shade of light yellow before freezing. Nothing seems to turn off in the case, everything sounds to be continuously running.

Someone said to change the thermaltake heatsink (which i initially had in there) with the standard AMD one. The cpu temperature reduced by a LOT after that, but the problem stayed the a red bar comes across the top of the screen when it freezes.

Any ideas on what could be wrong? Please help me out, any info would be well appreciated!!

I built my PC about 2 weeks ago and since then it freezes after logging in to windows 8, or after 2 or 3 attempts will run for a good 4 hours and then randomly freeze, I can still move the mouse around but not click on anything. It also sometimes comes up with the "Your PC has run into a problem" blue screen. I've been able to play games like Battlefield 4 with no problems so it really is inconsistent. I'm not quite sure if it is a hardware/compatibility or software issue and would really like some help with this as I've spent $1300 on something that isn't running properly. Thanks in advance.

So we just purchased a brand new HP Pavilion dv4 laptop and we are already having issues with it. First of all, even though our wireless internet connection is excellent, it's constantly freezing up. Pages appear to load fine, but then you can't navigate around it for several minutes. Yahoo email is rediculously slow. We havent loaded anything on the computer yet so i'm not sure its a memory issue, but then again, i'm fairly clueless.

also, when i'm typing an email, there's a long delay from when i acutally type to when it appears on the screen. especially when i type fast - i end up typing blindly and then there's just an equal delay when i try to go back and erase it.

I'm extremely frustrated with this new laptop - anyone have any ideas?

Hi all,

First time poster here, and after reading some other threads similar to my problem, this seems like a great forum. Hopefully this is the right section for this issue and I'm really hoping I can get help finding the root of my desktop freezing. Unfortunately it seems every thread I read with the problem most similar to mine always left open ended with no apparent resolution. It appears issues like these can have numerous causes and are tricky to track down.

So this computer is a few days old. Basically it freezes at random, no BSOD, keyboard and mouse become unresponsive and I have to manually reboot. While it does happen at random, one thing that seems to increase the likelihood of freezing is large USB transfers. It will be used as a recording computer, and while I thought it didn't like USB transfers, I put a firewire pci express card in to record off of that, and it still froze. I also thought maybe the PC didn't like the audio interface (or its usb and firewire drivers) it was plugged into and recording audio from, but it froze without it plugged in as well.

The sound card also emits a glitchy, buzzy noise from the headphone out when it freezes.

It has also frozen just after booting up, without me doing anything at all, no transfers, no programs open.

You can try testing the memory using the diagnostics to start.

You may even remove half the memory and try running the PC for awhile to see if you still get the problems.

Honestly with a new PC and everything you have tried I would suggest returning it.

I built a Pc for my Girlfriends brother, I have a good knowledge of Computers and I am a Networking student in Australia.

He used his Comptuer for a few weeks before this started happening but this is what he has told me (I haven't actually seen the problem) the Computer would randomly freeze after about 2 hours of being on.

This also happened when he tried to open games so I checked all the connections were correct, the works and I also formatted the HDD and did a fresh install of windows.

The Computer was 100% fine at my house, didn't freeze or turn off but I didn't try to open any games as I was in a hurry.

I took it back to him and he says after a few hours of being on it randomly freezes (no picture shown on the screen). I have a feeling it's the monitor but I am not sure.

Totally stumped on this one, never seen this before. I haven't actually witnessed the problem it's all of what he has told me so I'm not sure.

The specs:

CPU - AMD FX-4300 4 Core Black Edition Processor
Mobo - ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2 Motherboard
RAM - Corsair CMX4GX3M1A1600C9 4GB (1x4GB) DDR3 (I know I should've gotten a dual channel kit but I was working on a budget and it was more expensive)
GPU - EVGA GeForce GTX 660

HDD - Western Digital WD Blue 1TB WD10EZEX

OS is Windows 7 Professional 64 bit (Legitimate)

A:Pc Randomly freezing - brand new build

Well, first before doing anything rash, you should view the freezing first hand yourself. Just in case the user is mixing up their terminology.
If it is indeed freezing, this would be caused by overheating. You may need to reapply thermal paste between the heat sync and the processor. Make sure all fans are spinning. And make sure it is clean of dust. If fresh paste doesn't fix it then it would be a failing or underpowered PSU.

I've had my new laptop for just 10 days thus far and it has frozen on me at least once everyday since I got it. When it freezes, absolutely nothing works, requiring me to perform a hard shutdown by pressing down the power button. All drivers are confirmed up to date. I ensured this by using the HP support assistant as well as manually checking my driver versions against those on the hp support driver page. I have performed a complete windows reset but that didn't solve the problem. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.

A:Brand new laptop freezing randomly

Finally got it somewhat sorted. Having the Task Manager open at all times, I noticed that the data through the WiFi went to  zero for about 3 seconds before the freeze occurred. I then decided to disable the WiFi and connect through my smartphone. No freezing occurred whilst in this state; for about a week. On reconnecting back to my router, my laptop froze within the hour. The HP support tech said he was aware of certain routers causing printers to freeze so I should try connecting to another. Luckily, I had powerline adapters and a nano router lying about. I connected that up and experienced no freezing for 6 days. On connecting back to the initial router, my laptop froze yet again. Running a google search found others with the exact problem that was supposedly solved by disabling IPV6 on the WiFi adapter on the laptop. I disable it and have not experienced a freeze for 5 days thus far.  Fingers crossed, that should be the end of it. I will update my post should any freezing occur again.

I just bought a Lenovo G550 Laptop from the Microsoft Store. Brand New. I've had it for less than a full day. I started it up fine the first two times. I then started to install my programs (iTunes, MS Office, etc.). I ran a Windows Update. Restarted. And now it freezes at the "Starting Windows" screen. Right after the little balls form the Microsoft Logo. I'll even get the sound, although it's about a minute late. I've restarted it in Safe Mode, and it's fine there. I've tried using restore points, and it keeps telling me that the restore points have been deleted. I've tried disabling both the WLAN and the USB through the BIOS. I've tried disabling all startup programs through MSCONFIG. Still nothing. Does anyone have a suggestion? I'd format it and reinstall Windows, but it didn't come with a disk, and I didn't have a chance to create a Backup. Please Help!!

I would take it back stores have to take a product if you brought it within 7 days of the purchasing, if you can?t do that there should be a CDKey on the bottom of your laptop if you can get a copy of windows 7 (with ever version you have e.g. Home, Pro, Ultimate) reinstall windows.

Hi, I just finished building my new computer a few days ago. I'm still in the process of loading everything on, but it's already giving me a little bit of trouble. I think it's only done this three times, but thats enough for me to see it as a problem. Here's what happens: The computer will freeze and repeat a millisecond of whatever audio it's playing, giving a nice buzzzzz sound. The weird thing is, after about 5-10 seconds of that, it will continue normally for about a second, and freeze up again for another 5-10 seconds. When it continues normally, the mouse will move, until it freezes again. If I move the mouse rapidly while it's "frozen", it will carry out that action when it unfreezes for a second, as if the command is being acknowledged and is just backed up. Sounds like something's using all my CPU for some reason? It happened the first time while I was listening to iTunes and installing my Panda Antivirus software. The second time I'm not sure what I was doing, but it didn't do that continuing thing, it simply froze and stayed like that (while repeating the playing audio). The latest time, I began playing a video on Vimeo and full-screened it. It froze on the audio, so I pressed Esc, and when it snapped out of it for a sec, it got out of full-screen, but it just froze and unfroze for a few minutes until I shut it down. I wish I could see what was eating my CPU when this happens, but the computer isn't functional for enough time for me to call up Task Manag... Read more

It freezes especially while streaming video (even simple youtube videos) as well as when gaming (compatible games) and sometimes just when I'm browsing the web.  It freezes in brief intervals of a second to a few seconds and makes a repetitive buzzing sound if there is sound being played when the freeze happens.  See video below

Ok I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite laptop brand new running XP. I've been having somewhat of a problem though. I've put several programs on the computer, none of them have high specs that the computer would be struggling with, examples include the computer game Myst, this language learning program and a couple others. I've been having a problem where for example in Myst I will get to some point where I click to move to a new area and then the computer starts reading the disc to get the data and then the game freezes and I get that error message which says an error has occurred and this program must close and you can choose to send microsoft an error report or don't send. When this happens, it occurs right as you click on some sort of new option and the computer begins reading the CD/DVD so it can proceed. It doesn't always do this when loading from the disc though which I find strange.

This computer is brand new, I have done absolutely nothing to it in the way of modifications. I'm really kind of disappointed by these problems and I can't understand why they'd be occuring. Does anyone have any idea what the issue could be here? Thanks a lot.

Hi there. I didn't know which section to put this in, so if its in the wrong place please move it.

So I've had this problem since I built my computer a few months ago, it is completely sporadic and seemingly random. Sometimes my computer won't freeze for days, other times shortly after start up.

When it freezes everything stops, the keyboard and mouse are unresponsive (no Ctrl-alt-del etc.) and if sound is playing there is a sort of "glitch" then silence. I don't know yet whether this is hardware related or software related.

Originally I set it to install and walked away came back hours later so I wasn't at the pc watching things. Anyways I managed to damage some files or something and for whatever reasons i could not figure out how to repair them. The microsoft forum was a bust no even one person tried to help me so I got sick of waiting and deleted the partition on the drive and made a new one and formatted it within the installer loaded from boot of the vista CD. That part went fine and quick. However when arriving at the step where its expanding files it took almost an hour before it spun up the CD and began increasing beyond 0%. From there up to 5% at best increases (avg 3%) then the CD spins down and idles for at least several minutes and then spins up gets a little farther and repeat. Basically the amount of time its just sitting there is probably 20 times or more longer than the time its actually progressing. Why is this? Is it supposed to do that? It seems odd to me that it wouldn't just keep spinning the CD and continuously progressing. Especially on a system with a dual core 3.2 ghz and 2GB of ram installs should zip through no time at all. I'm sure the install will be done before anyone replies but i thought I would check here in case its something I should be concerned about as a possible problem with my system.

I uninstalled my nvidia drivers with DDU and clean installed the latest driver but the problem still persist.

For the past two months my laptop has been freezing inexplicably most often when browsing the internet, the weird part is that it'll freeze the first time but when i restart it it acts stable.I tried system restore, cleaning the registry, AV scans and spyware scans (With multiple programs), updated all drivers, defraged the hard drive

The only two things that u can think of is my Zone Alarm Firewall interfering with AVG (I heard this happens sometimes) or the numerous errors in the events viewer listed below:

OK I know MSN freezes on all computers every now and again but mine has been playing up a lot lately.

In the past it has frozen during conversations etc...But in the past few days it shuts down immediately upon opening it (each time).

It says 'Not Responding'.

I've tried closing it while frozen using Task Manager however this does not work - (I've left it 5mins+ to close - nothing happens!)

I've tried Shutting Down or Restarting the computer. Each time it takes about 1-2mins to respond and then it says 'Logging out' and then 'Shutting Down'.
However it stays on the 'Shutting Down' screen for ages. I've left it on one for 2hrs.

Each time I end up having to just manually shutting down the laptop by cutting the power...

Anyone know how to resolve this?

Thanks a million!

I then installed all patches/updates to OS and office that were available through windows update. ever since day 1 - this computer will not stop freezing up... it is constant. I have already posted here and had computer hijacked - I have ad-aware and run it daily. the puter even freezes on start -up on occassion - rarely runs for more than 1/2 hour at a time.... always will freeze when it isn't used for several minutes... all power settings have been shut off - no screen saver/powering down monitor/or hibernation .... I feel like it could be a driver... I already uninstalled Nvidia Gforce3 ... so windows is using a generic video driver - hardware settings shows nvidia being disabled. I don't know what else to do . I have a 1.60 GHz pentium with 256 MB of ram, running XP Pro 2002 Service Pack 2. I would say this system is 4 or 5 years old now.

I took my computer in for service the first part of June, had the hard drive wiped clean and a clean install of the XP Pro. Last week it just started going haywire. The screen would go black and it would freeze (mouse and keyboard--no Ctl-Alt-Del). I took it in to the shop last Thursday, and they removed an internet filtering program that I had downloaded. That helped quite a bit, but it still freezes on me. Sometimes I can work for 4 hours, sometimes 5 minutes before it freezes. I could not even work on it today, it froze constantly. I also replaced the mouse because the driver was old and the problem seemed possibly to be mouse related. That also did not help the problem--in fact, I think the old mouse worked better. I have run Scan Disk several times, Spybot, AVG, and CCleaner. No viruses detected. The whole system seems to be running slower than usual, too. I do notice some graphics involvement when it freezes--the mouse will be cut in half or there will be a little vertical line.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

That is completed but now when I go to windows update it freezes. Built what I thought was a dream rig but it's a nightmare and freezes at any point from welcome screen to an hour in but it will freeze at some point any time I start it. Thought it was bad RAM or I5 RAM in an AMD build (given by mistake) but apparently not according to tech people, Corsair themselves and Memtest. The HDD is a Seagate Barracuda but a chkdsk on it was fine. Temp is fine (30's) and system in 40's. AMD 1090T, Gigabyte GA-790XTA--UD4 motherboard, OCZ PSU (700W), GEForce 9800GTX, Corsair XMS3 CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 DDR3 Core I5 (Corsair said the only difference is an AMD runs it at 1333) and an Noctua Heatsink which I only mention because it now blocks the RAM .Hoping it's the video Card or PSU as all the other wiring is hidden out of sight under the MB and elsewhere. Worked fine before, sorry I ever touched it, Windows 7 which ran on the other computer for months, Thankyou

My Vista laptop freezes all the time. Often, I am just browsing the internet (no other apps open), and the computer completely freezes. I can't move the mouse at all, and CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't do anything at all. The only solution is to do a hard reset of the computer.

Additionally, the laptop often fails to go into hibernate. The screen goes black but the various activity indicator lights stay on. I can't "wake up" the computer by pressing the power button, and moving the mouse of pressing other buttons doesn't do anything. Again, the only solution is a hard reset.

Often, when I start up the computer again, it freezes completely at the loading windows screen. I have to do a hard reset yet again, and then I have to run the "windows failed to start" utility and do a system restore before I can use the computer again.

Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve this? It's driving me crazy!

P.S. I cannot install SP1 for some reason (Microsoft and Dell support are clueless about this, and the only way to do this seems to be completely reformatting), so I am running Vista Home Premium without the SP1 update. Not sure if that makes any difference for the freezing problem though.

Here's my HijackThis log. Any help you can offer would be extremely appreciated. Thanks so much!

I got my new Yoga 900 in the mail about two days ago and ever since it's been randomly freezing - more frequently recently.  It froze once on the first day of use and I chalked it up to errors with Windows 10.  It froze once more before I updated Windows and today after updating Windows it froze four times in one day.  There's no error message or anything, it just freezes completely without a BSOD and the only way to use it again is to shut it off and turn it back on. Aside from uninstalling bloatware and updating Windows with windows update, I haven't made any modifications to the software or anything.  I haven't dropped it and it's always been put in a case when stowed in my backpack.  I've babied this thing every step of the way.  What's causing this?  I'm really disappointed in having these problems with a brand new $1300 laptop.  Is this common?

A:New Yoga 900 Constantly Freezing

Hi yogaflame, welcome to the forum.
If all of the "bloatware" you are referring to, includes the Lenovo Companion, and Settings, you probably didn't receive the updates provided by Lenovo.
    Still, if you go here:
... and compare your installed driver versions, to the Lenovo driver list, then update to the new, you should be all set.
Make note that there is a new BIOS, C6CN34WW, so if you're not on that revision, update the BIOS first.

I'm not sure if the OS is the problem, as my parents computer runs windows 7 (same version I have) and never experianced the problem that I know of.

I've had my computer for about 2 weeks, (friend helped me build it). In that time it's frozen about 5 times, twice in one day, and 3 in the past 2 days. It's an ENTIRE computer freeze, nothing responds beyond the restart button/power button. Once it restarts it's fine, until it happens again.

Music/sound has been playing each time, short of one time, and when it freezes it loops the current noise with an area of about 0.5 ish seconds of the track, sometimes a little more by the sound of it. If I turn off the speakers/turn it out/up it reacts, so I know it's just because it froze that the sound is looping constantly usually creating a loud buzzer noise.

I've been having some graphics problems as well, but I ran a downgraded version update and it's still happening. (Not that it's related, just something I tried for another reason and the freezing continued). It doesn't look like it's triggered by anything specific since i've been doing different things each time it happened.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

I'm not sure if I'm in the right place. Probably get bumped.

So whenever I visit or any other Bell media website, the video I choose to watch freezes. Whenever I visit these websites on my smart phone or anyone's computer but my own, it works perfectly fine.

I have tried turning off all my plugins concerning advertsing (ghostery, ABP) and still the same issues. I have updated java and flash and was unable to fix it. Other websites carrying videos including Youtube have not been affected by this issue.

I do not believe this is a network issue, nor a hardware issue since other websites work fine. This website used to work perfectly for me as well. Something has changed and I need to find out what.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

This issue just started yesterday morning. I woke up yesterday morning to find the computers monitor (which went into hibernation) and the CPU still running (apparently soeone other than myself was on the computer and left it on overnight). I should also mention that the internet was still running as well (internet provided by my cable company)

Because the computer was unresponsive, I had to manually shut it down and turn it back own. It booted up like it normally should, but then 15 minutes after starting it up (and while I was on the internet), it froze. The mouse would not respond, ctrl-alt-delete wouldnt work either, so again I had to manually shut it down.

However, when I tryed to start the computer again, my monitor would display a message such as "No Input Signal" and 5 seconds later would go to sleep. So I was forced to manually shut it down again. I would get this same error message 5 or 6 times before the hp splash screen would come up and load like it normally should. However, the computer would only last between 5-15 minutes before freezing up again.

Once I manually shut it down for the 10th time and turned it back on again, I got an error message about some DLL's were corrupted or missing which prevented Windows XP from loading normally. So I did a PC recovery, and got XP to run again, but the computer is still freezing.

I'm worried that the constant freezing and me having to manually shut it down would be causing more problems. I actual... Read more

I've had my laptop for about 2 years now and never had any trouble with it, but for the past week it freezes straight as a I log on and won't go back to working again. After running virus scans in safe mode (it usually freezes half way through them) and leaving it off for 24 hours it worked fine again for about 2 hours then the same thing happened again. Tried to run the scans again but nothing happened. A week ago (just before this all started) I connected my new iPhone 5 to the laptop and it froze it then, so I went to system restore back to the date this happened, then it crashed during that, now the thing doesn't even recognise its on charge and won't switch back on at all?

My USB mouse keeps freezing every few seconds. Regardless of what I'm doing, it will freeze every 10-15 seconds for a period of time of anywhere from half a second or so to ~10 seconds. I've tried this in multiple USB ports and I've gone through all of the settings to disable the powering down of the USB, etc. I've replugged the mouse and restarted my PC more times than I care to count over the last two days. I've uninstalled and reinstalled drivers automatically and manually a silly amount of times. This has also happened with two mice in two days, except one of them now isn't even being recognised by Windows anymore. I tried to system restore, but the furthest back I could restore to was about two hours after the problem started occurring.

Any help would be great, as this is unbelievably frustrating.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L305-S5919 with Windows Vista. It has been freezing about every 30 minutes-1 hour. It started last night after i got a blue screen saying it was shutting down to prevent any damage. This occured while i was playing World of Warcraft and listening to Itunes. Im currently in safe mode with networking. It's not freezing while in safe mode. I also use AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A:Computer freezing constantly.

It may be shutting down due to overheating. Most laptops are not designed to be gaming machines. You can try using compressed air to blow dust out of the vents and see if that helps.

Most time while online I'll get a pop up saying the webpage, IE or explorer.exe has stopped working/responding or the thing will just freeze and all I can do is press and hold down the power button and restart.
I haven't been able to repeat the problem in safe mode.
I reinstalled Windows from the recovery partition a day or two ago, updated Windows, rebooted and the thing locked up immediately.
I've scanned with 5-6 different antivirus/antimalware scanners and none have ever found anything.

A:Opera; AIM is constantly freezing.

I am not to familiar with Opera my self never really used it. But if it works for you and you like it then keep using it. As for the AIM problem. AIM uses a lot of ram the last time I checked. I might recommend that you try the program called Pidgin. This is a multi-protocol program that you can run aim in. See if that works any better for you.

Things will be fine for a few seconds or minutes, but then Windows freezes. It'll freeze for a few seconds, sometimes ten to fifteen, and then it'll go back to normal. It doesn't matter what I am doing; the problem happens regardless. I can't save anything to disk to back up for a re-install of Windows or anything because the freezing screws up the saving. In addition, I cannot reboot or shut down the computer manually; the process hangs at the "Windows is shutting down" phase, and doesn't move along, no matter how long I wait. What can be causing this and, more importantly, what can fix this?

All help greatly appreciated.

Hello. A few days ago, I got a brand new Acer Iconia W500 tablet running Windows 7 Home (32-bit), which is frequently freezing on me. In the process of configuring the computer for optimal use, I uninstalled several of the Acer junk programs that the machine came with and downloaded & installed Java, Malware Bytes Anti-Malware, and Ad-Aware, as well as attempting to run Windows Update. This is when the tablet started freezing up. I uninstalled Ad-Aware to free up resources, but that did not improve anything.
Anytime I try to open more that one tab or window in Internet Explorer (8), it is guaranteed to become non-responsive and can only be closed via the task manager, after which IE will continue to freeze until the computer is restarted. It should be noted that when IE is frozen and the processes are listed, there is always one more iexplore.exe process than is actually running (if opening a second tab made it lock up, there will be three IE processes listed). Windows Explorer also occasionally becomes non-responsive. When restarting or shutting down the tablet after a lock-up, it will usually freeze while shutting down, requiring a hard restart.
Windows Update initially claimed it downloaded 58 updates successfully, but when I chose to install them, it made no progress. Now when I try to run WU, it says that it’s checking for updates, indefinitely.
The computer runs fine when I start it in Safe Mode (w/ Networking), so it seems like something ... Read more

Hi guys
Im not really good when it comes to dealing with computer problems
I need some help
I bought a new laptop recently (Qosmio f60 series)
and the specs are

Intel core i5 2.27GHz
6 GM ram
64-bit Operating system
GeForce GT 330M graphic card

Now the problem is that the laptop freezes up when Im either shutting it down or leaving it idle for more than 10 minutes
and sometimes when I force it to restart from freezing up
It is completely fine when Im doing my tasks or even playing high-end games on ultra graphic settings(although the temperature of the laptop gets really high..)

And sometimes when I force it to re-start it will go into a 32 bit system mode(some kinda fail-safe system?)

I have tried to create a system repair disc to solve the problem but it did nothing...
I need help PLEASE!!!

Alright. This happened a long time ago, and I fixed it somehow. However, now it is happening again, and I cannot remember how I fixed it for the life of me. When a pop-up comes up, it freezes FireFox. The built in Pop-up blocker is on, but that's not the problem. I don't care for pop-ups, it's always fun to constantly click that X button every time one appears. But now, it will always freeze once I close out of it. Any suggestions?

A:FireFox constantly freezing.

Did you try to reinstall Mozilla Firefox yet?

That might be an easy solution to your problem.

If that doesn't work you might try to get a new user account for mozilla firefox which resets all of the settings back to default.

1. Close Firefox completely (select File > Exit from the main menu of Firefox).
2. Select Start > Run... from the Windows Start menu (use the search box on Vista).
3. Enter firefox.exe -ProfileManager and press ok
4. Click Create Profile (Follow steps and once finished...)
5. Delete the default profile you have there, and start to use the other one (newly made) one.

Hope this helps!

I have this laptop I sto- I mean borrowed from my brother and I have been having constant bother from it.

It began with the problems of two broken keys (G and H) and a problem with connecting to the internet...

So I sent it off.

When it came back from a computer repair company called "Tech Guys" (This is in England, by the buy) and it made things worse. It then started freezing on occasions and the date and time settings were broken.

I sent it off again,

They replaced the motherboard because it was corrupted but then freezing became the terrible condition and I sent it off, again and again. But they didn't fix it. They didn't send me a new one either. Luckily we get unlimited fixes because we pay.

I want to fix it, could you guys kindly look into it?

Are you running multiple monitors? Anyway, try Start=>Run=>msconfig
Then go to the startup tab and search for a line called rundll32.exe nview.dll,nViewLoadHook or something similar. The Startup Item should be nview. Uncheck it.

This one should be related to your drivers. Can you find out the name of your graphic card? Drivers page This is the page to download drivers for the graphics. Check if you see anything familar.

I have had mu computer since November last year. Its a top of the range machine.

Windows 7 keeps freezing on me, and I have to force shutdown by pressing & holding the off button, as ctrl+alt+delete doesn't work (and nothing else does, either!).

There is nothing noteworthy in the application logs. There is no correlation between what I am doing on the machine and when the freezing occurs - it's totally random.

My boyfriend bought a computer at the same time as me (different brand) - and he is having the same exact problem. He is a computer tech guy, so he rebuilt his machine from scratch, but it is still happening regularly.

My machine cost a lot of money, and I'm scared it is going to get damaged because this keeps happening.

Please help!

A:Windows 7 Freezing constantly...

You will need to provide more information about the specifications of the computer. Has it been freezing since you got it? If not, do you remember the last software or hardware change that was done? The problem could be simple, but in order to solve it, we'll need more information. Please update your system specifications (make, model, hard drive size, RAM amount etc) so that help may be had. Don't worry about the 'freezing' breaking something.
Something is already broken or at least not set up correctly. There are tons of people here who have answers to any question.

For a good few months I've had Windows 7 Ultimate installed on my laptop, and for those few months I've had absolutely no problems whatsoever. However, recently my laptop has begun to freeze a number of times while in use. The freezes seem to happen when certain applications are in use, (Browsing in any internet browser, using instant messengers, ETC) I even think it's starting to suspect it's helping to produce I/O device errors as I've gotten a couple of those today, Once while extracting something from a rar and again while burning a DVD.

This has never happened before, and my computer hasn't undergone any significant changes to cause it either, so I'm pretty stumped. So, I'm here asking for help, on my first post no less.

i've had my laptop for a year now and i've never had ANY problems with it whatsoever. well, i took my husband's external hard drive b/c mine is falling apart and i was freaking out i'd lose everything on it, so put it all on his for extra backup. well, that was DAYS ago, maybe 4-5. i'm not sure this has anything to do with it, but i wanted to mention that's the only new thing i've done, besides the usual.

at school on thursday, i brought the external in so my classmate could put a program (visual studio 2008) on it for me. his microsoft security essentials went off with about 4 worms/trojans. he said he cleaned it off, but now ever since then, my laptop keeps freezing! it doesn't matter what i do or load up, it'll freeze within 2 minutes.

essentials said it successfully deleted the worms, so i'm not sure that's it. it's just weird that after he hooked up the external to his laptop, it caused MINE to freeze, even though i don't have it hooked up to my laptop. i hooked it up when i got home from school and then took it off b/c it started freezing. while i was sitting there, though, he wanted to make sure none of it got onto his (he has windows 7), he ran his antivirus through and nothing came up, so he said he didn't get any of it.

i have no clue what to do and i'm sorry if it's in the wrong place. i'm not sure if i should just reinstall vista with the CD that came with my laptop, but i'... Read more

I hope I'm this posting in the right section.

Anyway my problems is that my PC freezes at random moments (while gaming, browsing, or even just browsing) , sometimes just temporarly, but keeps those 30 sec-1min freezes throughout, other times it stops responding completely , and while i can move the mouse , i can't do a thing but restart it.
And when it restarts , it hangs on the welcoming icon and doesn't do a thing, and only gives me a choice to go thru an endless loop of system repair that does nothing. Then i have to turn the power off ad then pray it will start ok next time.

Thing is , that problem has a way of disappearing after the PC isn't being used for a few days, but it comes back after 2-3 weeks. That's why the technical service where i brought it 2 times (it has still a 1,5 year warranty) haven't found a problem with it.

I tried re-installing the OS and cleaning it, like they suggested but the problem persists, so i guess it's hardware related?

I guess somebody will know what to do or encountered this kind of problem before. I hope i explained the problem alright.

Thanks in advance.

Since this seems like a hardware concern, run some hardware checks. If you are overclocking any hardware, please stop.

Run all but the advanced tests with SeaTools for HDDs.SeaTools for Windows
SeaTools for DOS
If you have an SSD, make sure the following are up to date:SSD firmware
BIOS Version
Chipset Drivers
Hard disk controller drivers/SATA drivers
If you have a Marvell IDE ATA/ATAPI device, make sure the drivers are up to date from the Intel site or Marvell site and not from your motherboard/vendor support site.

Monitor temperatures during the following tests. Use the following programs to monitor the temperatures. Real Temp is a good CPU temperature monitor.
Speccy - System Information - Free Download will monitor all hardware temperatures.
HWiNFO, HWiNFO32 & HWiNFO64 - Hardware Information and Analysis Tools can be inaccurate for CPU temperatures, but is a good program for GPU temperature monitoring.
Use FurMark: VGA Stress Test, Graphics Card and GPU Stability Test, Burn-in Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net to test the graphics card GPU. Let it run until the GPU temperatures even out or until the GPU temperatures reach a dangerous level (you can find the max temperature for your card on either the nVidia or AMD sites; if you are not sure, ask us). The goal is to get a steady temperature, find out if the GPU is overheating, or to see if there are any artifacts present in the test itself: look for strange pixelated patterns on the screen or ... I have an E-machines EL1358-53 desktop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit OS.

The system seems to freeze up (no blue screen, just not responding), mostly when Windows boots up, or working on files through the network. I have tried to restore to previous date, and also wiped out hard drive and re installed windows. I do not really know what to do at this point, nor do i want to spend the money out of my budget to buy a new desktop.

I know this info will not be enough for anyone to give me an appropriate response, so what else do I need to post on here to help anyone out with my problem?

Thank you in advance.

OK, well, to start with, thank you to everyone who tries to help me out with my issue, means a lot!

OK, so the issue is, my computer (recently) has decided to be a prick and at random times after start up (could be before i log in, could be in 4-5 hours) it will freeze up, nothing on the screen will load, all sounds will stop, and mouse wont respond, the only way to un-freeze it is to manually reboot the computer, it happened after i put a new graphics card in it, (nVIDIA GeForce 5500) i successfully installed the drivers and the card, and had fun with my semi-improved graphics, then came the freezing, i tried everything, even removing the card, removing everything about nVIDIA that was added, and system restoring to a factory reset. still freezing, any help once again is GREATLY appreciated, right now the card is OUT of the computer.

If you would like any other info, ask and i will be more then happy to get it for you

THANKS again!

This computer is used by more than one person and my roomate didn't understand the warning message Avast gave when a bad file was dowloaded, and it was allowed on the computer and now the computer is infected. He doesn't know what the file was called or any information unfortunately. The symptoms are that Explorer constantly freezes for the most inane actions like opening a folder. I'm running Vista on a Hp Pavillon dv9417ca Notebook PC with 2 gigs of Ram, AMD Turion 64 X2 1.8 GHz processor, and a 160 gig harddrive that keeps changing size(Part of the infection).

I first cleaned out the temp files with ATFcleaner
Then I ran Malwarebytes and ran it again from Safe mode
I then ran Avast from a boot scan.
I finally ran Kaspersky online scanner.

Nothing was found by any of these.

I was going to try to use combofix but I read on the site that it can damage my system and since I'm ignorant of its function, I won't.

Any help would be more than appreciated.

I have performed every check I can think of, but I'm not all that computer literate. I will be typing, sometimes in outlook, sometimes in WP, and the cursor freezes in space and my only option is to turn off the system. Even control, alt, delete to stop the process will not work. My computer's problem is that all the programs and everything that's running suddenly freezes (programs, mouse, music, etc.) from time to time. Especially when I'm watching videos, usually on fullscreen, or on particular websites such as Twitter or those that take a while to load, are sluggish when scrolling through or have a lot of content. After it freezes, I would have no choice but to restart the computer. I tried formatting my computer, and installing the system on a new hard drive with plenty of space. I also cleaned out the dust from the CPU to make sure it's not over-heating, used a few programs and cleaned out the registry, deleted unused files and programs but nothing seems to work, the computer still freezes pretty often. After I formatted the computer, it started freezing less often and the blue screen where Disk Checking occurs stopped appearing whenever I had to restart my computer. Which means it helped a little bit to format the computer, but did not solve my problem. Hope you can help!

I have had my laptop (Toshiba Satelite) for at least a year or two, quite a while now, and have had no problems with it at all until just a few days ago. It has started to freeze up and not respond to anything except mouse motions. It usually does this with anything other than Internet Explorer and does it especially if I run a program like Windows Defender, or Malwarebytes, which I installed today because of a reccomendation in another thread on here. It will let those open up and then freeze a couple minutes into the scan. It will freeze with IE open much later than with other things open. When it freezes, it will just let me move the mouse and that's it. It will not respond to any clicks, keystrokes, ctrl alt del, or anything other than holding the power button down until it turns off. It has done this every time I have restarted my computer today, which seems to be about at the 800 mark by now... It's confusing, it will freeze quicker with some programs and not as quickly with others, but when it does, the only way to get out of it is to forcibly shut it down. Thanks in advance for any help!

For a few weeks, my computer has been freezing a lot. I reinstalled drivers updated windows and software, tried everything, but is won't stop. No information related to the freezing is left in the event viewer, so I think it is a hardware problem.. My computer is less than 2 years old so a worn out hard drive is pretty much out of the question. The freezing usually, but not always occurs when the computer is working hard (serveral apps open at once, video editing, etc) and seems to occur more often when the computer has been on for a long time. The freezes usually happen every few minutes and it is driving me CRAZY! I want to pick up my computer and throw it at a brick wall because I can't get anything done! HELP! PLEASE! What is going on?! I think it could be a processor problem but I'm not good with hardware so I need help urgently! Thanks!

For the past few weeks, my computer has just been constantly freezing every few seconds. I've run AVG, Spybot, and even downloaded and ran Norton...none found anything wrong with the computer. I also tried re-starting in Safe Mode and then re-starting again in regular mode as a friend suggested. Did nothing.

My laptop is a little over 1 year old. It's a Lenovo running Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1. Has an intel Core i5 processor, and is used only for internet browsing and video streaming.

I have a Dell Inspirion Laptop that has begun freezing up. I spoke with someone that builds computers and he told me to run msconfig, which I did. I wasn't sure what to do once I got to that screen so I didn't change anything. Now, I can't get online and not much of anything will open.
Should I just re-install XP or use this laptop for a boat anchor?
