Did windows perform a 1-year rollback, by itself?

Q: Did windows perform a 1-year rollback, by itself?

Dear tech support,

(Since this is my first post here, I hope it is in the right forum. My apologies if it isn't!)

The title pretty much describes the question I'm asking myself right now. I just noticed that all files, folders and software from the last year are missing. The most recent data is from May 2nd and onwarts (just the things I did on my pc since then), anything before that date is gone until april 2012. So basically there is a 1-year gap from which all data seems to have been removed.

More curiously: files, folders and software I have deleted in the past, are now back in the place they once were. This leads to me think that, somehow, my pc has performed/suffered a rollback of about a year after the Windows updates from May 2nd.

The whole thing puzzles me completely, never have I experienced something like this. Googling for information didn't help much either, nowhere could I find a similar story. Contacting the online Windows support chat resulted in a constant 'no employees are available', hence I decided to raise my question here.

Basically I want to ask you: do you have any idea what has happened and/or what to do about it? I am just clueless.

Some additional information:
- I am running Windows 7 Home Premium service pack 1
- My PC is about 5 years old, the oldest data dates back to 2008 and 2009. As mentioned, the old data is still present, it's just the most recent year or so that's gone
- The problem seems to have started after a large Windows update on May 2nd, especially since the most recent data is from that date onwards
- I performed a quick scan with ZoneAlarm and found no malware. This PC has no history of significant malware

Thanks in advance people, you are my hope right now!
Just let me know if you need any more info.

Kind regards,

A: Did windows perform a 1-year rollback, by itself?

Windows restore from a recovery point does not affect user data only Windows system files. Even if you rolled back to a point that was a year old the user data would stay. It sounds more like a backup was restored but without user intervention I don't see how that would happen.

What do you use, if anything, for backup?

Because I only have this windows 7 laptop for one thing, and that s/w won't run under Virus 10. I say that because the "upgrade" happened without my knowledge or consent while I was away from the machine and BTW I have AU OFF! I will admit that as angry as I was about the virus way in which it happened I wanted to check it out. Well having done that and seeing my stuff doesn't work anymore, its gotta come off. If I am not mistaken, I was offered a roll back early in the tour, but I can't find that tour any more. Assistance requested.

A:I must rollback to Windows 7

how long has windows 10 been on the machine? if more than 30 days then that option is gone.

I have windows 7 licence for my PC.
I installed the free upgrade to windows 10 through windows 7.
I created a USB windows 10 install and used the setup on through windows 7.
I made a backup image of windows 10, reinstalled it and it is fine.
I understand there is an option to back within 30 days.

I can reinstall the windows 7 image easily.
I think both windows 10 and windows 7 now be valid for this computer?
I understand you cannot use both at once as a dual boot.

I really want to use windows 7 in the mean time.
When windows 10 is needed, in particular for directx 12 games, intend to use it.

The problem is I searched for a rollback option in windows 10. it is not there.
In windows 10, I went to settings, update & security, then recovery.
There are two options. Reset this PC and Advanced Startup. There is supposed to be a go back to windows 7 option, but it is not there.

So are both windows 7 & 10 licenced valid for the lifetime of my PC, not with both installed at once.
If not, what exactly are my options?

A:Windows 10 rollback

Windows 7 and 10 licenses are both valid for your computer. You can restore the image of either one and run it, you can clean install either 7 or 10 and run it, you just can't have both installed at the same time without purchasing a second license for Windows.

The built-in rollback feature of Windows 10 is notoriously unreliable. It probably saved you some pain by just disappearing altogether :-)

I recently installed Windows 10. Did it using the download tool as had been waiting for over 2 weeks and still hadn't got the notification that it was ready.
However, I hate it. Nothing seems to work properly, and is SO much slower now, so I wanted to go back to 8.1.
Apparently, all I had to do, was go to settings, recovery, go back to 8.1.
Well, I did this, clicked on all the right boxes, but it just doesn't work. As soon as it says it is going back, I get a blue screen with "pc/device needs to be repaired, a required device isn't connected or can't be accessed, error 0xc000000f"

I then have to turn off the computer, and when I restart is just goes back to Windows 10!!

Help! How do I get Windows 8.1 back???? (Without losing any of my files?

Hi everyone,
I have a Windows 7 Professional computer with 1 hard drive installed. I recently partitioned the hard drive to have two sections, 1 for my Windows 7 installation and one (20) GB Vista partition. While trying to install Vista, something went wrong so I had to force shut it down because the install process messed up. So all I did was restart my computer and delete the partition. Everything went fine but, whenever I boot my computer, it asks me whether I want to boot to Windows 7 or go to Windows Setup Rollback? How do I get rid of this?

A:Windows Setup Rollback?

open msconfig
search box - msconfig
the boot tab should look pretty much identical to this one.

The bootmgr likely knows the vista installation failed and is trying to ask you for input on handling it. I'm guessing you just planned on reformatting that partition anyway.

I decided to roll back to 7 Ultimate after 10 seemed to cause issues with Nvidia and Guild Wars 2. But when I did so, I was told my copy of 7 Ultimate was not genuine, and I no longer have the key (moving cross country, I lost a lot of things). Any idea how to go about a fix? I can't even go back to 10 now because my copy of 7 is 'not authentic.' I'm waiting on a rep to help me, but the wait time is ungodly.

I find myself in the extremely dissapointing position of having to dump W7 in favor of Vista. I hate doing it because I really like 7 and really hate Vista, but W7 isn't reading my numeric keypad as a numeric keypad (it's just sending the numbers as though the keystrokes are coming from the qwerty board) which means I can't play my favorite game.

I can't find anything on how to rollback an upgrade from Vista without losing everything (full reinstall of the original). Now, if that's the only way, then why did W7 keep vista around in the first place? Makes no sense, yes? Or am I wrong and Vista is just gone?

is there a way to rollback to vista from windows 7, there must be a way because if you can upgrade you must be able to downgrade. Im not sure if its all in my mind but windows 7 seems to be very slow and alot of applications keep locking up on it, and i dont find it anywhere near as responsive as windows vista. i know its still a beta....

so is there any way to rollback, and system restore isnt an option, because every time i seem to REALLY need to use it has some how been switched off. which is super annoying

I've read every post I could find on this so I'm sorry to ask another dumb question but here goes.

I created an access database (volunteer work) which has an autoincrement field to issue numbers to animals taken in at our shelter. My 'boss' (also a volunteer) wants this simple autoincrement changed to a value which begins with the two digit year and then has 4 digits, starting with 0001 which will increment sequentially and restart at 0001 with the new calendar year. Therefore, records will start with 10-0001, 10-0002, etc for this year and 11-0001, 11-0002 for next year.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

current vba code is:-
ChDir "C:\00 - savehere \2012"
Range("c57:h102").ExportAsFixedFormat Type:=xlTypePDF, Filename:=composedfn & ".pdf"
Is there a way to save to ChDir "C:\00 - savehere \ currentyear
without having to change the vba integer value to each new year? or using if statements for each year? So when the 1st of jan comes it automatically save to the new current year directory and if possible creates a directory at the start of each new year as well?

A:Solved: Save PDF to a year directory each new year or month

If folder exist....

' Does this directory exist? If not, create it.
If objFSO.FolderExists(strParentPath) = False Then
Set newFolder = objFSO.CreateFolder(strParentPath)
Wscript.Echo "Put a ocr fold here" &
'Save it here code'
End If

This will get you the year
CurrentDate = Date
File_Year = DatePart("yyyy",CurrentDate)

You should be able to code it with this info

I found a post on this exact topic from back in 2010. I am trying to incorporate the code into my database and am not able to get the code to work if I make any changes. Here is the link to the previous thread:

I have also uploaded the database that was provided in the last post. If I try to change the field and object names I appear to be unsuccessful in having the code still work even when I change the items in the code as well. I woud like some help. I would like for there to be a field called "RequestDate" that has the date stamp that is keyed in by the user. Then after that is keyed in on the form the "AssignmentID" field is updated to the new assignment number. The "RequestDate"="Admit_Date" and "AssignmentID"="ActualFWCNumber". I am trying to do this in Access 2010. If I make changes either the number field doesn't autopopulate or the same number keeps repeating. Any and all assistance on this would be great.

tamanthalou, welcome to the forum.
As you have posted the original database a copy of your database with no data in it would be better to understand your problem.

You should be able to see and have the option to remove all the updates in Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, you'll have to click "Show updates" at the top of the window to see them though.

I hope someone out there can help me. I have a new Dell system with the Windows XP OS and dual-processor. Right after I got it about 2 months ago I upgraded my Windows Media Player from 10.0 to 11.0. I've hated it almost immediately but didn't try to rollback to 10.0 until the last couple of days. I have tried every instruction on MS & nothing works. I can't even remove WMP 11.0 from ADD AND REMOVE programs. It says it has been removed, but it hasn't. And when I tried to directly download 10.0 I get this message:

"The file WMPLAYER.EXE was a version number of 10.0.03931 where 11.0.5721.545 was expected. Windows Media Player is not installed properly and must be reinstalled. Do you want to install the player from MS web site?"

After trying to rollback to 10.0 & getting this message WMP will not play at all. I have to go & re-download 11.0 so my WMP will work.

Does anyone have any idea what may be going on? Can anyone help me?????

A:Windows Media Player 11.0 rollback to 10.0

It is reasonably explained here:

As WMP is part of the Windows OS, there is no guarantee that it will uninstall or roll back.
It may or may not work, as the link explains.

Sounds like in your case, it is the latter.

From my memory, this is explained at install time though?

Hey all,

So about a few days ago my windows 8.1 decided to shit itself and refused to start up. I started checking on the web for some solutions to my problem and one of them was to start up with the windows DVD and try running the repair tool and such.

So I decided to do that, but no matter what option I tried, be it repair tool, recovery, full recovery, roll back, none of the options worked, it kept telling me "this operation system doesnt support this feature" or something along those lines. So in the end I just desided to format the HDD and reinstall Windows 8 and its running fine right now.

My question is why wasnt I able to use those features, and how can I make sure I have those feature available for me in the future?

Note: As I was typing this I just realised the DVD I tried using to use those various tools was a Windows 8 DVD, the windows I had installed was 8.1. Can that have anything to do with it?

A:Windows 8.1 unable to repair/rollback

You can not use the Windows 8 Repair tools with install of Windows 8.1.

Posted this on Neowin also but no harm posting it here:

I have the RTM version of Windows 7 which i installed on a newly created partition, the install failed and then the rollback subsequently failed and hung.

I have since deleted the partition I planned to install Windows 7 on, however it still exists when i reboot my computer and constantly tries to install itself.

I found one Knowledge Base Article on Microsoft Support but it pertains to Vista instead of XP and the commands it lists do not work in XP.

All im trying to do is get my PC to forget the Win 7 install so when i reboot my pc it goes straight into XP and not the Windows 7 install loop but i cant find anyway to do it.
One point to note I booted from the XP cd and tried FIXMBR when it came up to select which Windows install i wanted to fix it said that Windows was on D: when it is on C: ?

My PC is set up with 1 hard drive and 2 partitions

C: -- Windows XP
D: -- Partition for programs etc

I -- This was a 30gb partition made for Win 7 however i have since deleted this partition and moved the free space back to D:

Hey Everyone,

So my windows 7 machine (freshly formatted and working fine for the last few weeks) has recently started crashing every couple of days.

I'm not sure what's happening, but basically I turn on my computer and it hangs at the "Starting Windows" animation. Basically my computer comes to the desktop in a minute or two, but it will hang at the starting windows screen for what feels like 10 minutes before finally hitting a BSOD and restarting.

The recovery system kicks in, rolls back the registry, restarts, and I'm able to get back into my machine and desktop as if there were no issues.

I have copied the "error results" and am pasting them below:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.1.7600.
Locale ID: 1033

Additional information about the problem:
BCCode: 74
BCP1: 0000000000000002
BCP2: FFFFF880037CAB20
BCP3: 0000000000000002
OS Version: 6_1_7600
Service Pack: 0_0
Product: 256_1

Files that help describe the problem:
C:\Users\Asif Ahmad\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-47906-0.sysdata.xml
If anyone could offer ANY assistance, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm not sure what's going on, but it seems like since I'm able to get back to my desktop with no issue after the rollback, it shouldn't be anything too crazy.

Thanks in advance guys!

Hi.  I have had a series of events and am looking for advice on whether I have a hardware or software issue.
I have a Dell N5050 N15 laptop running Windows 7.  PC was working fine and mistakenly did a Windows 10 upgrade on this laptop.  Windows told me my device was compatible.  Upgrade downloaded over days and sort of upgraded but then all of the sudden the screen became black.  I plugged it into an external monitor and was able to see the screen and the windows 10 finished upgrading and seemed successful but i had no laptop  monitor and no mouse.
I started doing some research and found out this PC was not compatible with Windows 10.  So I ended up rolling back to windows 7 which also seemed successful.  My mouse became responsive but no screen still.
I  tried updating video drivers and it said my drivers were current.  i also tried deleting and reinstaling drivers as i heard Windows 10 removed old drivers.  At one point I could see the screen faintly in the background using a flashlight.  I also tried to reconnect the LCD thinking maybe the connection got loose.
I no longer see any screen at all but still works with external monitor.

So I am wondering if it is the screen, the backlight or inverter or still something with the drivers since this sort of just coincidentally happened after the Windows 10 issue with the video.  I am not sure what the proper drivers even are for this dev... Read more

A:Video problems after Windows 10 upgrade and subsequent rollback to Windows 7

If the system works fine with an external monitor, then we could definitely suspect the LCD itself. In order to isolate the issue, turn off the system. Press and hold "D" key and Power button to turn on the system. On the LCD itself, the screen should start changing solid colors. If it does, then the LCD is fine. This is the LCD built in self test -
Also, turn off the system and press and hold the "fn" key and power button. It should initiate the diagnostics. If you encounter any errors, make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.
If there is no display when you initiate either of the tests, then the LCD might have gone faulty. This is just a co-incidence and drivers would not cause the LCD to go faulty. It should work outside the OS environment.
If there is display when you run the tests, then the LCD is fine. So, you could go to device manager and uninstall all display adapters. update the BIOS from - and restart the system and check. If the display comes back, then download the video drivers from the same site and install the drivers.

Recently staff PCs (Dell OptiPlex 3010) were updated to Windows 10 so that it could be activated and then rolled back to Windows 7 x64 Pro. The process itself went along without any issues upgrading, and the rollback didn't have any noticeable problems either. However, two out of the eight OptiPlex 3010's have an issue where they can't connect to the network any longer now that Windows 7 has been rolled back.
Model amongst all of them is the same.
Ethernet patch cords are good.
Network drops are functional.
Network adapter is enabled, device manager shows nothing wrong.
Loopback test works on interface.
Red X with no connections available on network connection icon.
Disabling, reenabling doesn't work.
Uninstalling adapter along with the driver and restarting PC doesn't make a difference.
Using latest driver from Dell's website doesn't make a difference.
SFC /scannow doesn't show any integrity violations.
Powering PC off, unplugging it, and draining residual power doesn't have any effect.
IP is set by DHCP and is set to automatic, just like it was before.
Windows troubleshooter indicates an issue failing to bind and suggests driver reinstall.

I'm out of ideas to try - has anyone else run into this problem or can you think of any other things I might take a look at? Hate to backup and then do a fresh install, but may have to.

I installed Windows 10 a few months back on my XPS 15 L502X. It seemed OK, but a little clunky. Now I'm sick of it. It is so much slower, things freeze up, the start button doesn't work, it takes forever to login, webcam doesn't always work etc, etc.
So, I want Windows 8.1 back. I actually grew to like this OS. Problem is I don't have the installation disks. I tried to get some via the Dell website but came to a bit of a dead end and am not sure if they will be supplied after the warranty has expired.

Any help appreciated.

You can get Windows 8.1 by following the instructions here:
However performance woes are likely due to the fact that you performed an initial upgrade install. These always perform substantially worse. A Clean Install of Windows 10 TH2 will work much better:

As this is my first post here, I will try very hard not to make a fool of myself. If I fail, please forgive me...

I've spent several days searching the forums and several others similar, but have not found any solution for my rollback issue. I will try to explain it in detail and pray that I get a response:

Reason for Rollback (Possibly Irrelevant)
Upon attempting to add files to my library, my player accepts the monitored folders and OK's the scan. At this time I usually see a progress bar and amount of files found. However, nothing happens and no files are added. When I check the monitored folders again, the folders I added previously are no longer there. The other issue lies with the Sharing options. The moment I click "Media Sharing..." the player freezes and is only closed through task manager.

The first attempt at rolling back the player produced a 'WMP is still running' error. I ran CCleaner and ended the processes through the task manager and attempted to uninstall again:

"It is not possible to uninstall Windows Media Player 11 because folders that are required for the uninstall have already been deleted."

I then ran CCleaner's Registry Scan and discovered a registry problem stating that

"C:\windows\$ntUninstallwmp11$\spuninst refers to a location that is unavailable."

I received this same message when attempting the"Run>%windir%\$ntUninstallwmp11$\spuninst\spuninst.exe" method... Read more

I recently tried to rollback all the way from WMP 11 to WMP 9. I encountered no problems rolling back to WMP 10, but now when I try to roll back from 10 to 9, windows media player 10 doesn't come up on the add/remove programs menu. The "show updates" option is checked, but windows media player 10 is still not showing up under windows updates, or at all. Is there another way to roll back from 10 to 9, or to uninstall windows media player all together?

A:windows media player 10 rollback problems

If possible, do a System Restore before WMP 10 was installed.
Otherwise, search Google for "remove windows media player 10"

And you can get WMP 9 HERE, I prefer this version, too:

I have an installation folder on my main machine(Windows 7) with all my software. I have repeatedly run into issues connecting odd devices to my shared folder. This time I have installed Windows 10 Technical Preview (on a different machine) and don't understand why it tells me I can't access my own machine. After all these years, you would think user friendly would be a reality. It seems to be a coin toss as to which machines will connect. I hate never knowing I can access my own machine without issue. Here I am trying to install applications but yet I can't get to my storage location.

What is the secret to sharing your machine, so that anyone on the same network can access shared folders?

Edit: I always turn on "Network Discovery" and "File and Print Sharing".

A:Network connection issues (year after year)

I'm more brutal via the firewall:

set trust localhost and your lan ip's, eg

then add two rules for only the PRIVATE PROFILE

inbound allow tcp/udp from to any for ports 137-139,445
outbound allow tcp/udp from any to for ports 137-139,445
I use a much more complicate scheme in reality to enforce known vs unknown devices and to segregate WiFI from wired access, but that's just me.

As I stated clearly, I want to rollback to windows 8.1 without affecting my installed applications. I mean, applications like 'VLC Media Player', 'WinZip' etc. and drivers for audio, video, chipset etc.
I know there is a way to refresh the PC but it says 'all installed applications will be uninstalled'. I know it won't affect my files on C: or D:
I am running windows 10(Build 10049) on my PC.
Actually I had an ISO of build 9926. After installing it, I opted for Fast Ring Users. So, I got this latest build(10049).
Build 9926 had an option at start-up to choose "Windows 10 Technical Preview" or "Windows Rollback". But, in the latest build i.e. 10049 its not there.
Please let me know is there any option to do that without affecting the installed applications.

Seems when I reboot my computer due to a installation I tried but stopped because of a mistake of windows 7 it now boots to I think it says rollback instead of the 2nd choice which has the working windows 7.

Upon Boot there is a black screen with windows rollback listed and windows 7, if I do not select windows 7 it auto boots to the rollback thing which is just a windows background with a cmd box.

How can I get it to autoboot to the working windows 7 one instead or remove the other one from boot?

I attempted to do an in place upgrade. After the upgrade was apparently complete the screen went black and there was no activity. I waited a bit, but no change; so I decided to force reboot my computer. I entered safemode and received a message about the upgrade not being successful and rollback process taking place--but then I received additional bad news: the rollback was not successful.

Now when I attempt to boot into Windows 7 I cannot access the desktop, only the following command prompt:

If I boot from my Windows 7 DVD, the first thing that comes up is a screen that says "Windows Boot Manager" It then tells me to choose which operating system to start, but only one is listed:

Windows Setup [EMS Enabled]

If I choose this I get the usual "Windows is loading files..." screen and am taken to the main Windows Install. I tried all the repair options; none has any effect.

I have been able to find very little information on this problem on the web, and no solution; the few threads I have found on the subject have led me to the conclusion that my best option right now is just to do a clean install.

I have two partitions on my disc, my main system partition (C) and a data partition (D). It looks like the Windows Installer took the letter D for itself and has created its own partition, called "Windows Setup Rollback."

One complication is that, although the upgrade failed, it used a sizable amount of space o... Read more

A:windows 7 upgrade and rollback both failed, no access to desktop

Boot into the installer and look at the partitioning on the Drive Selection Screen. Your data partition should still be there. You can browse in using the installer to Explore the data to confirm it's there or Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console.

As you've found this is not a rational backup method. Your files should always be backed up externally, even to the cloud using the 7gb which comes free with MS Skydrive, which can also Sync Any Folder to Your SkyDrive Account | PCWorld

Once your files are secured I would choose the System Reserved (100mb) boot partition and Win7 partition to delete using the Installer's CUstom Drive Options, then create a new partition there for install which will also create a functioning boot partition for the Clean Install Windows 7

Good Evening,

I have an issue that I hope someone in the land of Experts will be able to help me with. I have searched Expert’s Exchange as well as Google and I seem to have a bit of a unique situation.

Yesterday, I began an upgrade of a Windows SP2 computer to SP3. The install appeared to be going well, but after about 75% completion, I received a generic Access Denied message. The computer began to rollback the installation. When the rollback was completed, I allowed the computer to reboot. Upon logging back into the computer with my Domain Admin account, I received the following message:

“Windows cannot load the profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Profile will be erased at logout.”

When began to move around the computer, I found that I couldn’t really do anything. I was not able to create any new files or modify existing ones. My first reaction was that the drive permissions were messed up. I ran secedit:

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose

Result: “Unable to read from or write to the database.”

I was able to open the secsetup.inf in Notepad. I figured the problem as in the creation of the secsetup.sdb file. I then modified the command to point to a network drive (which I could write to):

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db Z:\secsetup.sdb /verbose

Result: Same as before - “Unable to read from or write to the database.”
I then attempted to run System Restore. I found that ... Read more

Hi :)

So I originally had Windows Media Player 10 installed, and then I upgraded to Media Player 11 for a few months. After a while, I decided I didn't like it, so I rolled back to Media Player 10, but all my play count data has been reverted to back before I installed Media Player 11.

I would like to know if there was a way I could restore that play count data if at all possible. It's not a big problem, I know, but it's a problem nonetheless and I would like it fixed.

Thanks in advance :)

I'm relatively new to all of the maintenance aspects of Windows etc. However, I want to try and run tasks on my laptop, according to a schedule, rather than worry about maintenance every two minutes etc.

So far, I have got the following on my computer for security:

Anti Virus - Run once a week, full scan once per month (inc. firewall)
Malware Bytes - Run once a week, full scan once per month
CC Cleaner - Remove junk - remove junk once a week

However, what maintenance tasks do I need to perform with Windows 8.1? Will the Maintenance tool do the work for me and if so, will running maintenance in general once a week, do the trick? I don't want to do maintenance every day for the sake of it.

Am I doing things correctly thus far? The security of my computer, I have been advised, is good. However, I'm a shade rusty on what maintenance I need to do - I was planning to run the maintenance at night so it could do the necessary work in the small hours and then come back to the laptop in the morning etc.

Thanks for any advice.

A:How often should I perform maintenance on Windows?

You don't indictate what anti-virus you are using. I use Microsoft defender and do nothing with it except allow its daily updates (via Windows Update - see here: Windows Update - Check for and Install in Windows 8

Malwarebytes I use only if something goes wrong (rarely - perhaps 1 time per year for me).
CC Cleaner - you can run the clean bit once a month (or week if you want). It certainly isn't necessary for anything unless you are seriously running out of disk space. Don't run the registry cleaner (or any other).

Windows will do it's own maintenance - let it be. It will default to 3am but will choose another time if your PC was turned off and try again when you just aren't doing anything.

Your best bet though is to make a backup now while things are working.

Do this: Refresh Windows 8 - Create and Use Custom Recovery Image
And consider Macrium (or similar) to back up everything: Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download perhaps once a month or so.
And also backup daily (or as you wish) your own pictures, music, whatever. You could use this for example File History - How to Use in Windows 8 - it will run automatically.

I asked what to do when windows 8 updates microsoft security updates and I was told to do a restore point. and when I asked if the helper had any other suggestions if restore point does not work I didn't get an answer back might be he don't know either on what else to do.
I have tried to do restore point and this won't work.
the pc gives a message can't update and can't do a restore.
prior to this I had to refresh as that is the only way to get pc back up and working.
and once again I have updates that have loaded and once again it says to restart computer and when I do restart it goes right back to the same situation.
error says can't restart and gives me options to either refresh or restore.
the restore point is not working.
any suggestions.

Clean Install - Windows 8

To all,

I just received all of the parts for my new PC. I had planned on installing Windows 7 Professional that I bought for my previous PC that I also built. After doing some research I have decided to go ahead and use Windows 10 based on it's support for newer hardware. That decision led to to research how to perform a clean install on the new PC. I think I'm more confused about the process now than before I started.

I think that I could go ahead and install my Windows 7 Pro and then do an upgrade to Windows 10 Pro followed by a clean install. The issue I see is that I have read that Windows 7 does not support the Samsung 950 Pro as a boot drive without preloading a driver. I would like to avoid that whole mess and just install Windows 10. I have read that you can possibly download the Microsoft Media Creation Tool to install with an Windows 10 ISO using the Windows 7 Key. I guess I could always buy a copy of Windows 10 Professional for $110.

I plan on researching more tomorrow morning as I wait for the second shipment with the case and RAM. Any help you can offer would be much appreciated. I have been lurking on these forums since early in the sevenforums days and always found the users very knowledgeable and helpful.

A:New build - How perform a clean Windows 10

Just download and install latest version to ssd and use Windows 7 key to activate.

Sometimes you are unlucky and it complains that Windows 7 is in use elsewhere.

In this case, disconnect ssd and install windows 7 to a small partition on hdd, and telephone activate it if necesary.

Then you can reconnect ssd, make sure pc is set to boot from ssd, reboot and then activate windows 10 using Windows 7 key.

If you do not disconnect drives, you will end up with a dual boot configuration.

I have some 3020's that work fine to repair from USB as a matter of fact all of my other models do, just the 3040's that do not work. I am wondering if there is a setting in the BIOS that needs to be changed or a driver that needs to be installed on the USB stick.

Thought I was having the same issue... "failed to configure windows updates"... but it was because it was restarting my computer at some point during the installation. My computer has a weak fan and will shut down if I'm not there to press enter after a restart. My computer isn't overheating but it is oldish.

I'm currently having issues with a Windows update. It's to update .NET Framework 3.5. I've tried everything I can think of.
I keep running into an error. 80073712 for Security Update for Windows (KB2844289).
I've done a sfc /scannow, which found a few corrupted files but was able to fix them (ran it two more times after that to make sure).
I've run a chkdsk /r and I'll post the log for that.
I'm currently running a dism check, which I know will run into an error because I've done it about three or four times already, just doing it again to post the error. I run it with the /healthcheck option which tells me it's repairable but then I'll try the /restorehealth and it tells me it cannot.
And the Windows 8.1 update does not show up in the Store (why they didn't include it as a Windows update doesn't make sense to me).
Another thing I tried to do was turn off the Windows Update service, rename the SoftwareDistribution folder then start the Windows Update service again to see if that would fix the update issue, no luck.

A:Can't perform a Windows Update (KB2844289) or Upgrade to 8.1

Here's an update:
Here is what DISM tells me:
Running with the /scanhealth option:

The componet store is reparable.
The operation completed successfully.

Here it is running with the /restorehealth option:

The restore operation failed. Either the repair source was not found or the componet store cannot be repaired.

Error: 0x800f081f

DISM failed. No operation was performed.
For more information, review the log file.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

And I'll upload the log file.

i tried to download windows Xp service pack 2 on my boss's computer but the following happened.
i went on the windows update website, i guess launched a new update software , so i waited for it to install , then it gave the choice between cutom updates or express , so i clicked on one of them.
there is a bar that comes up with green squares going thru it , and that just keeps on going forever, when i try to stop it, it would freeze the whole computer and i'll have to restart. i know it's nothing to do with the security setting in our netwrok here, because i can get windows updates on other computers on the LAN. can this be a spyware problem if so, how can i resolve. i never encountered a problem like this before.

thanks in advance

Hello everyone.
Today my computer froze upon exiting Battlefield 3 and had to shut it down manually.
After a lot of problem solving (I had to change the hdd port on the m/b) I am left with the problem displayed in the attached image and cannot figure out what to do. I have searched around and tried a lot of repairs but nothing happens. I also run sfc / scannow command several times (in safe mode also) which finds some problems that cannot be fixed.
Any help would be appreciated.
The ultimate solution would be to format my ssd and hdd

Yesterday, when I started my PC a blue screen popped up telling me:

Some googling told me there could be a problem with my ATA drives. Removed all the unnecesary ones, still no good. Reattached them. When I rebooted again the option to perform a system check emerged. I hit enter. A simple Windows booted, it started scanning for problems, couldn't find anything, all tests passed. I then ran the supplied memory test. 100% pass. Then tried opening notepad.exe (via cmd). It opened, allowing me to use it as a simple Windows Explorer. I then started Windows 7 Setup on my USB flash drive. It launched, allowing me to choose between the common options. Since I didn't want to remove my data, I chose Upgrade (as a form of repair). But the thing requested to be ran after a reboot, which is impossible.

What I'd like to ask is: isn't there a XP-sort-of repair installation that simply re?nstalls Windows, stays off of my Data, and allows to be used without having to log on to Windows?

Yes, I've tried this one, but it requires me to be able to log on.

Repair Install

A:Perform a repair install on a not bootable Windows 7

Unfortuntely not.

I recommend running Startup Repair repeatedly from booted Win7 DVD to get it started up, then run the Repair install once you get to the desktop.

Haven't tried it in Safe Mode yet.

Got the old 'Windows Resource Protection could not perform requested op'.

Attached is a sfcdetails.txt showing bad or missing dll's for languages not used on this machine. Do not know whether sfc error counter maxed out or what.

No difference in sfc behaviour before or after chkdsk, in safe or normal boot.

Ran System Update Readiness Tool. Got no messages other than Install Complete.

Got into SFC because of original problem of .... Lost sound from speakers. (Failed to play test tone). Obviously WMC, etc. inop. Just remembered I removed VLC media player recently. Could that have caused lost sound problem?

Also have removed 6 or 7 Windows Updates that either nagged or messed with the system for Win X.

Don't have a good restore point left. My problem.

Would appreciate ideas when someone has the time. Tnx

Hi All,
Having a problem, the one of our PCs is caught in an infinite boot loop so can't get into windows to try and run the upgrade from inside Windows.
When I try to actually do the repair install using the disk, just get the following message
"The computer started using the windows installation media. Remove the installation media and restart your computer so that Windows starts normally. Then, insert the installation media and restart the upgrade. [Do not select | Custom [advanced]| to perform an upgrade." ...

I've spent the best part of 24 hours trying to resolve this.
So far I've tried scanning using sfc /scannow /offbootdir=[DRIVELETTER]:\ /offwindir=[DRIVELETTER]:\windows
I've checked and rebuilt the boot record in case that might have been the issue
I'm trying to avoid a clean install which would have cured everything in about 30 mins, but we've a programme on there which we have to keep or else we face a really expensive bill for the software to be reinstalled by it's developers.
The last back up I have doesn't have the latest updates to the software either.
Is this fatal or is there a way round it?
I apologise if this doesn't make much sense either, sorry.

If you use Adaptec/roxio Easy CD creator it could be the reason for this to happen. Also if you have any Automatic Power Up feature on your motherboard it can cause this problem. Disable it in the BIOS.

Hello,Recently my PC developed Google redirecting issues and will not let me install any Windows updates. Google will direct correctly to big name websites like, Whole, etc., but for small websites redirecting will occur. Google will usually redirect to two sites before settling on a random site. For example,, then, then finally stopping on I?ve found that if I click on a website link five times Google will direct correctly on the sixth click. I've ran Mcafee scans and Malwarebytes Anti Malware scans. The Malwarebytes removed a trojan.fraudpack and two (Rogue.AntivirusSuite.Gen), but the redirect and windows update issues still persist. I just installed the latest slow ring preview build, version 14931.1000 and when I performed an SFC /SNANNOW I get to 19% and then the command comes up

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation. I tried three times and it always goes to 19% then this line appears.

Is there anything for me to be concerned about?

What can I do to correct it?

A:SFC /SCANNOW, Windows Resource Protection Could Not Perform....

I know about this fix;

RE : DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealh.................. I get error: 0x800f081f, the source file could not be found

Use the Tech Bench link below to download YOUR version of Windows 10 iso file.

Once you have the iso downloaded, right click at the ISO > click Mount > leave it there.

Then open the elevated command prompt and copy and paste this................

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:H:\sources\install.wim:1 /limitaccess
Note : H is the drive where the iso is mounted. Change it if your driver letter is different.

When it is completed, you should get the report that the operation is successful.
Now run the sfc /scannow again. It should be ok this time.

but since this is a preview build, I don't have the ISO for it.

I wonder if Win7 SP1 next year will be the last retailed edition for sale in the market or not. I remember the final boxed version of XP is SP2 and the OEM version is SP3. However Vista Boxed and OEM disc only got SP1 and customers must download SP2 from the Internet themselves !!

I ask this question is because I like to collect and keep the lastest boxed version and oem version of a Windows. So now, I have Vista SP1 OEM and Vista SP1 Boxed Edition. XP SP2 Boxed EDition and XP SP3 OEM edition.

I didn't buy Vista SP1 until I confirmed that there won't be Vista SP2 for sale in the market.

A:Do I have to pay for windows 10 after one year of use?

No. It doesn't mean it's free only for 1 year. It means that you have 1 year to claim your free copy. You can do the upgrade now or later but if you do it after 29 July 2016 you'll have to buy it so take your time and decide if you want it now. It's not the bad idea to wait 2-3 months while they fix some bugs etc.

I have tied to clear my temp folder after each cycle, it help a little bit but It still crashed after X hours

Given that I want to a full refreshed of the 41 Web Pages within a 2 minutes threshold. I cannot Open and Close the Internet Explorer each time. So, I open my 41 pages in 41 tabs, and flip from one to the other with the script using the Title of the page. Then restart the process

Long story short, I had some problems with my computer slowly starting to be unable to open certain programs (Steam,Battle.Net Launcher,Certain internet sites) and so I put a ticket into chrome and blizzard. Blizzard had the best response and it ended with them telling me, "According to your MSinfo, I see that the launcher is having all kinds of problems and even crashes out often. When I looked into the details of these crashes, I see that the loaded module is Kernelbase.dll (dont worry, Ill explain). After doing some research on this Dynamic Link Library (.dll file), I see that this file is associated to some essential processes contained within Windows and may hint at User Profile Data Corruption." He then starts to inform me how I can combat this, "Run Microsoft's System File checker! & Create a new admin user" I ran "sfc /scannow" got up to 26% and then was told, "windows resource protection cannot perform the requested operation" I'm at a lost. Thank you for your time.
