Volume control issues with multi-channel sound card

Q: Volume control issues with multi-channel sound card

I have problems with an application written in Visual Basic. The application is supposed to be able to control the volume of different output channels of the sound card RME Fireface 800. Within the VB application direct sound is used to control the volume.

However, volume control changes work for some of the assigned channels but not for others. Looking at Window's volume control mixer it can be confirmed that the output channels are correctly assigned to the application but the volume control changes are ignored for some of the channels.

The application and the volume control changes worked fine with the same application and sound card on a Windows XP machine.

I'm thankful for any suggestion on how to solve or work around the problem.

Hello welcome to TSF!!. Have you tried updating the software to a newer version that is compatible with Windows 7? Also have you updated the drivers for your sound card?

Try looking here to see if there is an updated software version for Windows 7. RME: Downloads

Also may I ask what is the make and and model of your machine and sound card?

Hello everyone, I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop running Windows Vista. I recently bought a USB audio sound card (since my computer's headphone jack was damaged).

The volume control on my computer has always worked fine, but when I plug in the sound card I'm no longer able to control the volume via the sound icon on the taskbar. The sound card's volume always comes in full blast, and I can only lower it through the controls in the program it's currently running (i.e. the volume control in a YouTube video). Therefore, when I try to control it directly through my computer it doesn't work.

Is this a common problem? Is there any way I can get this fixed or configured, or is there a problem with the sound card?

A:USB Sound Card - system volume control not working

As this is a software issue my response has to be quite limited. Basically, you may need to check a box specifying your default audio device in your sound settings. Hope this helps, if not drop your question into the software section.

I have E-MU 1212M sound card, Windows 7 and I can't fix this problem which I haven't had before. I reinstalled the Windows 7 and now I can't move my Volume Control and affect my sound card volume. My sound card volume wont move until I move it.
It's like my volume mixer is pre-effected,before my sound card.

any help will be appreciated, Thank you

Did it before? The Windows volume control doesn't affect any of my players volumes, so if I have Winamp open for example, adjusting the volume with the Windows mixer control doesn't move the Winamp slider, nor does it move the WMP slider, which is why I leave Windows volume at full, and adjust the volume from within what ever program I'm using to watch a film or play music.

I recently bought a dell computer second-hand from my friend, who had XP installed on it. It came with a subwoofer and a set of 4 regular speakers. On it, he had installed a form of creative volume control in addition to windows volume. The way it worked was he had the windows volume set to 100% at all times, and the creative volume control around 3% for regular browsing, 10-25% for gaming and 50% or higher for rocking out with music. I recently acquired windows 7 home premium x64 and upgraded my operating system. My soundblaster card has all the necessary drivers and the audio is all hooked up properly, and the only thing missing is this form of volume control. After looking around for the old software and trying a few different freeware and shareware programs, nothing has pulled through for me; any suggestions?

A:Creative sound card, windows 7 compatible volume control?

What exact sound card do you have?

Have you checked creative's website for additional software that goes along with the driver of your card? Is the windows volume not sufficient for you, or do you just want the extra ability for volume control?

If you installed the creative driver, have you checked in the audio control panel that's built into the driver?

Hi all, this is my first post. Sorry that it's a request for assistance.

I have a problem with my self build HTPC.

In a nutshell (since yesterday) when I adjust the volume in a media player (winamp or Jriver) only the left channel changes in volume, the right channel remains at 100%.

Both channels were working OK (volume worked on L and R) however last night all of a sudden the right channel stopped altering. I have changed nothing, all cables and connections are sound. I've check everything I can think of within the software and searched on the web for similar problems and can't find a solution.

This is a screen capture of my windows audio controls. When I adjust the Jriver volume control both speakers change volume together (yet when I change them in the program only the left channel alters). When I change the "Speaker" control only the left channel changes.

Any ideas what I need to so to sort this? It's a critical function as it's a HTPC primarily used for music and video playback. Thank you very much
Edit to add;
Using a different sound card solves the problem, so it's definitely Xonar STX related.

A:Volume control on left channel only - Asus Xonar Essence STX & win7

Reseat the Xonar sound card (with the PC powered off, unplug the card then plug back in). This may fix it. If not, reinstall the drivers for the sound card as a next step.

If it still does not work properly, I would suspect a hardware problem in the card.

my volume control doesnt show bass tremble ect. it just shows wav. cd player volume stuff like that. how do i get it to control bass. now i know a bit about computers but im not that advanced yet so please speak in lamens terms.

A:volume control issues

You can not control the bass or treble of your speakers through the volume control. The only things that are available for adjusting in the volume control is Master Out, Wave, Digital, MIDI, CD-Audio, and Line in which is the default things that show up the things that is not showing is Microphone, Mono, and Serial. Depending on your speakers or sound card you can not adjust the bass. Some speakers have a knob to adjust for bass and other things. Why exacly would you want to adjust bass and treble anyways most speakers sound fine without adjusting anything.

Hi, timduncan, welcome to BC!

A couple of questions for you:
What is the make/model of your computer?
What kind of sound card do you have?
Is your computer up to date with Windows Updates?
Possible solution based on what you've already provided:

visit the manufacturer's website for your soundcard (or computer) and download the latest drivers for your sound card.

I purchased a new computer (well second hand) and installed a fresh version of XP Pro on it. The computer now does not have sound or a volume control in the task bar. I assume the computer did have sound previously as there were a large assortment of video and music files.

When I search for volume control and click on them I get this message:
"There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices go to control panel, click printers and other hardware and then add hardware.

The program will now close"

On the side of the computer it has the following listed as its audio device:
Integrated Realtek ALC658 Digital Audio. Dolby 5.1 surround sound ready'
Anyway, i downloaded a Realtek ALC658 driver from google and still no use.

Hello, All! This is my first problem request so if I forget something please humor me.

Yesterday I played a YouTube video on my eMachines laptop (reconditioned, and purchased in 2004, that has worked just fine all this time but I know has to be replaced). When I tried to play this video for my daughter, the slider on the volume control in the system tray and the slider on the Windows player refused to hold the volume I wanted and slid to the low position, causing the sound to be nil.

I went to a Windows forum and searched for the problem - to no avail - but downloaded SuperAntiSpyware Free Edition to check to see if I had bugs. Aside from the usual ad-related stuff, it found something called Trojan.Agent/Gen-Krpytik which it subsequently quarrantined and I deleted. However, that seemed not to have solved the problem.

Then I looked in my Bookmarks and found you lovely folks. Since I'd forgotten the name/password I'd used the last time I had a problem, I joined again, and spent two or three hours searching for a post describing the same problem. Today I continued by lonely search with no more success than I had yesterday.

I'm posting in hopes that you will be able to help me with this. There was one person who had a similar problem some time ago, but that post had never been answered. Help, please?

Many thanks and bright blessings!

A:No sound due to sliding volume control

Does it slide down on its own? Maybe one of the hotbuttons on the keyboard that turns the volume down is stuck.

When I click (once) on the little speaker in my system tray, a volume slider comes up. Whenever you click on the slider, it makes a tone, presumably so you can hear how much it needs to be adjusted. It should make a "ding" and "click" sound, but instead I'm getting the system beep, which is always the same volume. It used to work like I wanted it to, but I recently reinstalled the OS, and I don't remember having to change anything for this. I have looked through the sound effects listed in the "Sounds and Multimedia" applet in the Control Panel (I'm using W2K), but none of the listed settings seem to affect this sound. I've even looked through the registry for "beep", but I didn't see anything that was clear as to what it was intended to do. Where do I go to make this adjustment? I also noticed that, when using MSN Messenger, the popup tray notification (for when someone on your list logs in) is using the system beep sound instead of what it's supposed to use.

I've purchased a 5.1 home theater system for use with my pc, and I'm having a few issues.

The subwoofer looks like it may act as an amp; so I've wired the desired speakers into the sub/amp, and I've got two RCA>3.5mm cord running from the back of the sub/amp to the sound card in the correct ports.
-Everything's plugged in , and I've got power to the sub/amp as well as the computer.

When I plug my headphones into the sound card, i get audio as well as mic capability, -but- I get nothing from the new speakers. I have not tried them on a receiver/ tv setup, so I might have to get my hands on one for more troubleshooting.

Yesterday, I bought a new sound card, it is High Definition Audio (8-channel) and I have 5.1 Logitech speakers. The problem is that the sould card has only 3 audio sockets, green (for the front speakers), pink (for micro.) and blue. However, my speakers, which are 5.1., have 3 cables to connect to PC, green, black and orange.
Is there any way to connect all the three cables of the speakers to my new sound card?

A:Problem with 8-channel sound card and speakers

That does not sound like a 7.1 (8 channel) sound card. It sounds like a 2.1 sound card with only the Green speaker jack.

What is the make and model of the sound card? We can only guess without that.

Hi Everyone, I have a SB Live 5.1 Digital Sound card and just purchased the Logitech Z-640 speaker system (which are great by the way).

Question...I have set all known speaker setup parameters via windows and Creative software to 5.1 speakers and have used the "test" mode and all speakers including the center give their associated sound.

However, when I go into a game title I select EAX and I only get sound through the four satellites, no center. The only way I get sound from the center speaker is to use Logitech's "Matrix" button which is for people with 4 channel sound cards to get "5.1" sound from the center.

Isn't my SBlive 5.1 a six channel sound card? An example game problem is Neverwinter Nights....I select Hardware Sound, EAX, Speaker Selection is "Surround" and the center doesn't work unless I use this "Matrix" button.

When I exit NWN and open the speaker settings of creative, I see that it was switched (by NWN) to LiveSurround which I didn't want.

Could any of you audiophiles help me out on this one? I would really like to use the speakers with true 5.1 which supposedly my card can do. This "Matrix" button, just pulls 1/2 from the front left/right speakers and emits from center, so it really doesn't provide the effect I want....

A:Notebook sound card for 5.1 channel speakers?

on your laptop you got only one output and one input

the output is for headset and may be used with stereo speakers, or 2.1 system, means there are 2 speakers for left and right and a sub.

but now comes your problem.

what you are plannig to buy is a 5.1 speaker system and means it got 5 speakers and a sub.
that means it have more than one connector. it haves tree connectors:

one for sub and the center speaker,
one for the front speakers left and right,
and the last one for the rear speakers left and right.
you will need a 5.1 usb sound card if you still want to have the logitech x540 speaker system and use it on you're laptop.

My friend's girlfriend bought him logitech z 640 5.1 channel speakers(for his computer) for his b-day however she forgot to consider that he needs a sound card instead of onboard sound to make use of the speakers. He has a Sony Vaio Series S Notebook.I was thinking of getting him an Audigy 2 ZS Notebook PCMCIA 7.1 channel sound card for his b-day to make sure the speakers she got him work. I am not sure however if a 5.1 speakers would work with 7.1 channel sound card.I would imagine that it does, however,I cannot be completely sure. If anyone can help me out it would be much appreciated.

A:Would a 7.1 channel Sound Card work with a 5.1 speaker set?

Yes, they will work, but he will only be able to get 5.1 sound. I would check the spec's of that notebook. It may or may not have 5.1 support. Even if the onboard sound isn't 5.1, he will still be able to use the speakers.

I have an older Dell Inspiron with WINXP. Over the past week or two I've been burning a lot of CD's to iTunes, typically listening to them while they copy.

Today I just wanted to play a song in iTunes but speakers were quiet. I checked speaker volume, it's on. Task bar, it's showing that it's mute. So I single click the speaker icon, and it does not show that sound is mute. Volume is at 75%. I also opened the volume control panel and same thing, none of the mute buttons are showing mute.

While typiing this post, I had some other ideas... when I opened Quicktime it went into an install process. I then tried playing an song in itunes and it works fine. HOWEVER, the task bar speaker still shows mute.

Question: Why does the taskbar show MUTE when I can play music and the actual volume control does not show mute? (If I open the volume control and click mute, it mutes but the icon does not change).

Thank you very much,

Hi there,

Bit of a weird problem here. The sound was working absolutely fine on my PC until recently. The machine is second hand, but according to my control panel, I have an M-Audio Delta Audiophile soundcard installed. This hasn't been changed. When I first got the machine, I ran the audio through the in-built speakers on my monitor. Then, briefly, I ran it through a stand-alone speaker. The sound came out of the machine just fine at this stage. When I moved the audio to go back through the monitor, it would not come through. I then tried to run it back through the speaker, but still no joy.

Now, as I've already said, this machine was second hand, and in the time I've had it, I didn't fiddle about with any of the audio settings through control panel, so I can only assume that the ones I see before me now are the ones that were presented to me when I got the machine. However, the first major thing that I notice is different is that I no longer have a speaker icon on my task bar. When I go into Sound and Audio Device Settings, the Device Volume section is greyed out. As are the speaker settings options. I cannot hear system sounds either.

I have two system conflicts in device manager - both of them are listed as RAID Controller. I have no idea what these are, so I'm not sure if they would be causing anything, but as I've not added anything new to the system, I should have thought that these would have been present when I received the machine.

So, I'm at a bit ... Read more

I hope you can assist me as the Windows 7 volume mixer is freaking me out and I cant seem to find a way out with this...

I run Windows 7 on a Dell Inspiron 6400 and I use the volume buttons on front a lot to increase/decrease/mute the sounds... however this feature is not working with Windows 7 or maybe I have not fixed the correct settings.

Also I have a Logitech MX610 mouse with volume buttons on it that don`t work as well.

For the volume buttons on the laptop, is there or did you install a driver for it? It may or may not be needed, but from the sounds of it, it is.

I have a dell windows 8.1. Everything has been fine for a long time and now... no sound. I must admit to never really understanding how sound works on my laptop. After some fiddling around I managed to get some sound - but only when speakers are plugged into the headphone socket. Now my PC controls make no difference to the volume. I think the ss below suggests that I want the sound to go through the 'speakers headphones' but the sound level meter says its using the communications headphones.
This is what I have for my sound card.

The same happens when I stream audio - only works if headphones connected and no control over the column from pc.

Lastly, when I right click on the top one and click test it says 'failed to play test tone'

Can anyone help please?

A:sound only works with headphones - no control over volume

The first thing I see is you do not have the correct sound driver. You only have the generic, basic function, Windows installed High Definition Audio Codec (Driver).

First step is to install the correct hardware sound driver. Not enough system spec's provided so I can't research what you need. If its a factory built PC, go to the PC vendor and download the Win 8.1 driver. If its custom built, go to the motherboard vendor for the driver.

I have speakers plugged in to my computer running Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit. The computer is recognizing that I have speakers plugged in and when I play something the green bar moves with the music. However, no sound is coming from the speakers. I have gone into the BIOS settings and enabled onboard audio. All sliders are at their full volume. I have unplugged and replugged the speakers, rebooted, shut down, uninstalled and reinstalled the sound driver, all to no avail. I have eliminated the possibility of the speakers being broken by testing them with an iPod.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi all,

Just joined up....
What I want is actually the opposite of what most people are looking for.
I want to install windows 8 on my kids computer but want the volume level to be set at a certain level so the sound is not to high no matter what they do.

I am able to achieve this right now as the desktop is on XP and i have the wave bar set to a certain level so no matter how high they put the volume bar it just stays at a certain level.I have hidden the wave bar so they cannot even get at it by mistake.

The main thing is that I am using a sidewinder X4 keyboard which has the vol+/- so they can easily increase the volume even if I hide the volume tab from the desktop in windows 8, while in XP it remained a certain lvel even if they put it upto 100%.

I have been searching for win 8 mixers where I could maybe have the same type of control as the XP but so far have found nothing.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated and used

Hi there everybody

Last night while in the middle of another Marathon session of World Of Warcraft, My front channel speakers shut off for no apparent reason? I didn't change any settings or mess with connections, so it appears that it shut off on its own.

I tested switching the connectors to my souncard so that the rear channel would play through my Front speakers and that worked, so its not the speakers that are acting up.

My guess is that my soundcard might just be crapping out on me since its a Old Soundblaster Live Value card, but I want to make sure, and I want my sound to work properly until I get a new soundcard soon.
My question is: Is there a way I can test to see if its the soundcard front channel port thats fried, or the connector? And any other ways I can check settings to make sure everything is set up properly?
I'm not to familular with soundcards, so any help would be appreciated.

A:Sound Card Issue; Front channel shut off

"Is there a way I can test to see if its the soundcard front channel port thats fried, or the connector?"

You did the right thing already....and you know the problem lies with the card.

By connector, I expect you mean the female plugs ON the card? Well, remove the card and examine the physical integrity of the plug to the board. Unless you jammed the speaker plug sideways or whatever it should be OK and tight to the board

If the card looks like a Dust Bunny, blow it off, reinsert it and see what happens.

Hello all,

I just recently upgraded my previous nvidia geforce4 mx card to a geforce 6200 card. I have used Nvidia for many of years and have always took advantage of the multi-display.

I have my card configured on a clone display with Analog display monitor/TV-svideo. I have in the past always set the fullscreen video mirrorring to show on my TV. This way I can start a dvd, video, presentation to play on my tv while still being able to navigate my pc with my pc monitor.

On to my issue....since I have installed this new card I have configured the nvidia control panel the same way I have on my old card. For some reason when I play a video the fullscreen on the tv is stretched to fit my screen but the small window on my monitor still shows the "black bars" above and below the movie that keep the aspect ratio. Its very frustrating because everyone has coneheads

I have tested this by switching the video mirrorring to display videos in full screen on my monitor instead of the TV... but still get the same results, fit-to-screen stretch on monitor and normal aspect ratio on the tv's smaller window

I have also un/reinstalled drivers, updated drivers, changed resolutions with no success. I am at a loss--I have used this for many years in the past, but now Im not sure if Im overlooking something on this new card or what...

The only TEMPORARY fix to this problem is to not use the mirroring fullscreen and just maximize my video player...but then both screens have vi... Read more

Hey there! A few days ago I changed my hdd because the last one got corrupted and had a lot of bad sectors so I installed a new windows 7 OS. Everything was smooth until the sound suddenly stopped. I wasn't doing anything in particular. I noticed the green bar on the volume control is moving but I had no sound. I plugged headphones in - same thing. Anyways it fixed with a reboot and I thought it was a one time bug. But it happened 4 times already and the only other thing that fixes it beside rebooting is uninstalling the sound device from the device manager and installing it again. What is causing this? I downloaded my Realtek drivers and I ran them with the setup.exe file and they are currently installed on my PC but they don't seem to do anything. These are pictures from the various things I wanted you to see that look normal:

What may be causing this and how can I fix it?

A:No audio but the green sound bar on the volume control is moving?

Welcome to the Windows 7 Forum.

The first thing I see is you do not have the correct sound driver installed. I don't know what your hardware is but what is listed is the "High Definition Audio Device" which is the Windows installed generic sound driver. You should install the correct driver from your PC vendor.

In addition I see the NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device and that has caused some problems in the past. Temporarily disable that in the Device Manager and see if that helps.

Please fill in the "My System Specs". It helps us to try and help you.

Recently I went through a day of torture by an unsuccessful attempt to System Restore. I lost a display driver from some inadvertent deletion in either Sytem Mechanic or some other registry cleanup program. I tried several solutions, then, perhaps prematurely, reinstalled Windows XP Pro. Experiencing further difficulties, I then reinstalled Service Pack 1, which fixed the display problem pretty much. BUT... some sound problems developed:

a) I was no longer able to locate any volume or play control. I found an article in the Windows Knowledge Base that told me how to install the play control panel through the command prompt from my XP Pro disk. This fixed this problem... But...

b) While I can now control the volume through the sys tray icon and the play control panel, I no longer have this function on my keyboard! I reinstalled the keyboard software from a download site, and the keyboard's shortcut button functions all work BUT NOT the volume control. The mute button works fine, but NOT the volume control buttons (the - and + buttons). They were working fine previous to my reinstalling Windows. I fear that some registry file or setting needs fixing.

c) Lately I have discovered a final and third problem. There is no sound recorder in my files! I find NO sound recorder in my Start/Programs/Accessories/Entertainment section, nor anything like this by conducting a file search. It seems that this recorder didn't get installed when I reinstalled Windows. Is there a file... Read more

A:No Sound Recorder in Windows XP and Can't Use Volume Control on Keyboard!

Check Device manager and particularly the Keyboard and Sound items. If either have yellow marks or don't agree with what you know to be the correct item, delete all of the listings and ask for a new detection, as you can do there.

Even if there are no apparent problems shown there, delete those two items anyway, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Windows will pick them up again and perhaps you'll get lucky.

Beyond that, be certain that you are supplying the correct drivers for the enhanced keyboard that you apparently have and if you have sound card drivers, supply those instead of letting Windows do a default selection for you. Normally XP does well that way, but you're evidently not a normal case.

Good luck.

Pretty often clicking on my sound icon (Which IS present in the system tray), does not open the volume control slider. When this happens I go to Control Panel but Sound controls won't open from that location either. There's no way to control the volume and must reboot to get it back (temporarily, because it keeps happening).

Do I possibly need driver updates? If so, which one of these is my sound card?

I'm having a little problem here which I wasn't quite able to solve using the official Creative Support.

First a little explanation:
Before installing my new Sound Blaster ZxR I had to temporarily use the Onboard Sound of my Asus Rampage IV Black Edition because of a SLI Water cooling component blocking the necessary PCI Port of the former Sound Card ( a Sound Blaster Recon3D Fatal1ty Professional ).

Because of the cracking ( grounding loop? ) I receive during the startup when using 3.5mm jacks ( or 1/4" with the ZxR ) I stopped using them whenever possible and instead started using the Toslink connection on both the Recon3D AND the RIVBE as it electrically disconnects the PC from the Sound System.

Now here comes the Problem:

In a PC, when you use a digital output, that bypasses all (or most all) of the sound card as the device its feeding is the one that has the volume level control. I suspect this also applies to what you have, as it apparently works the way my Toslink works (the level control in the application program).

I have been missing that feature badly.

Also sending shortcuts i.e ALT+TAB is supported.

I got a new sound card today. Installed it, installed the drivers from the CD, plugged in the headphones and it works. But the sound levels are way to low. I raised the volume in all the places I could find, but it's still a bit low.

Here's the card: Creative Sound Blaster 5.1 VX Sound Card - Quality 5.1 surround audio

Here are my headphones: Philips - Stereo Headphones Deep bass - SHP2000/97 - Indoor - Headphones - Accessories

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

A:Low volume with new sound card(Creative Sound Blast 5.1 VX)

1. Since you are using a separate sound card and not the on the motherboard audio, disable that in the BIOS. If its enabled it can conflict and cause problems.

Are you plugging into the Speaker jack on the card or do you have it connected to the front panel in the case. If you are connecting to the front panel headphone jack, plug the headphone into the Speaker jack on the card and see if there is any difference.

Try the headphones in a different computer to check the volume level. If its low on another computer then the headphones are the problem.

I am quoting from the post, I wrote on Norton Community support:"I borrowed my friends USB memory to give him some videos about our project. Hi everybody :

I've got a few questions about 5.1 and 7.1 Channel Sound Cards. One : Do I have to have ALL speakers connected ? That is....front,center,subwoofer and rear ? Or, can I just have the front speakers and subwoofer connected ? Two : Diamond and Creative Lab cards will work in PCI or PCIe ? I've got the Gigabyter GA-Z77-DS3H Motherboard, which has one PCIe slot and one PCI x4 slot. I hope I'm not "getting the short end of the stick [to put it politely]" with this configuration on the motherboard. I need to upgrade my audio. My System : Windows 7 Professional 32-bit, 3 Gb RAM, NVidia GeForce 210 w/2 Gb RAM, WD SATA II 500 Gb Hard Drive, 500 Watt PSU, SATA II LG Optical Drive.

A:Multi-Channel Cards

First, you can connect a 2.1 speaker system, for example, to a 5.1 or 7.1 sound card. The integrated audio on your motherboard is at least 5.1. Just set the speaker type, in the Sound/Playback panel for 2.1 (if that is what you have).

Most of the new SoundBlaster cards, e.g. the Xfi series, are all PCIe. There are PCI sound cards, but unless you get a relatively high end card you are not going to get better than the internal. I have a recording studio and do a lot of audio, but I use my recording interface unit (a Roland Octa-Capture) for recording. For other PC audio, I use the built in RealTek that is on my Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H motherboard. I had a high end SoundBlaster Xfi sound card installed but it was conflicting with my recording system so I had to remove it - to be truthful I can't hear any difference between the RealTek and SoundBlaster with my 2.1 speaker system.

I recently acquired an Opti931 sound card to complement my SBLive! since it won't work in DOS mode (I have a VIA MVP3 chipset). Unfortunately the volume level is extremely low - I can barely make it out at max volume with the speaker next to my ear.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Installed a sound blaster 16 sound card. Installed drivers, turned up volume to highest point by going to start, programs, creative sound, and also by clicking on the icon by the clock. Both way are turned up as high as they will go.

Changed PCI slots, sound cards, everything but another computer.

Can hardly hear it out of the headphones, and no sound at all out of the speakers.

Had a HP (the ones that comes with an HP computer) Sound card in before, had the same problem. That is why I changed the sound card. Made no difference.

Tried all I can think of but just can't get any volume out of it. Like I said, using head phones very little volume, speakers no volume.

Does anyone have a solution or suggestion?

Recently I had to to do an in-place upgrade as I was getting BSOD on trying to enter safe mode. Everything went on fine without a glitch.
But now I do see a hit on my laptop's performance. It takes longer to boot and hand over cursor control after booting.

After much research, I observed the following:
- In Device Manager, for Primary IDE channel, I have the 'DMA mode, if available' option set to true. For device 0 it displays current transfer mode as 'Multi-word DMA mode 2' and for device 1 it says 'Not applicable'

- In Device Manager, for HDD properties, it says 'Location 0'. For my CD/DVD drive, it says 'Location 0(0)'. I just have one HDD and one CD/DVD drive.

- I ran Nero infotool utility and it reports CD/DVD drive running on primary channel and HDD on secondary channel. Device Manager reports no secondary channel though.

Please let me know if above behavior is correct; if not, how to fix it.

Generally, no. The sound card only provides a standard output signal that is used by "amplified" speaker systems. The volume level is controlled by your speakers.

I imagine you need a matching driver from that sound device manufacturer's website - and it has to be a 64-bit one or it won't install.

Alternatively, visit Windows Update/Microsoft Update (or enable Automatic Updates) with the device connected & switched on. If Microsoft has a better driver it will be downloaded automatically. Or, if the device is listed in Device Manager, double-click it, click the "Driver" tab, then click "Update Driver".

Last year I bought a Creative SB (see my specs) to replace my on board card. I am constantly having problems. For example I run the following games. Call Of Duty:UA, IL2, Red Orchestra. I also use TeamSpeak. I was using a Razer headset but cord got yanked and the mic quit working. Now I'm using a cheap USB headset. When I switched I couldn't get the headset to work. I tried everything. Then suddenly it started working, I'm not even sure what I did. The problem was I no longer had sound through my speakers, only the headset. Then after several months suddenly the headset went dead. I spent an hour trying to figure out why. Again, I have no clue what I did, but it started working again. This time I had Teamspeak on the headset and all game and browser sounds from the speakers. Tonight it happened again. Now I have game sounds in the headset and teamspeak on the speakers. When you bought the cheaper headset was there software that came with it? ther maybe some default settings that are causing changes to the sound to be made. Also stupid question i know but i have done this myself - have you got all the leads in the right place i.e speakers in green jack + mic in pink jack?

You could also try updating your SB drivers just in case but doubt the issues is there. It may alos be worth spending a couple of mins checking the Sound config settings on the SB Card software making sure that your headset is setup correctly there

Hope this helps

Windows xp pro, 512 mb , 40 GB main drive NFTS.
attempted to use original Windows xp setup disk to "ADD sound volume control" to taskbar. Could NOT find its folder to "extract" from.

Previously had checked Start> Control Panel> Sound & audio devices ". Under AUDIO, tried to Ck [volume box]; got win error msg " Can not execute SNDVOL32EXE." " uSE "ADD/REMOVE - CONTROL PANEL ETC. "

sEARCH FOR SNDVOL32.EXE found it in C:\I386, ver 5.1.2600.0 ( xpclient .010817-1148). ( also found "EXPAND.exe & Extrac32.exe )

Hello brainy people.
I need to be able to implement an automatic volume change between two sound sources.

Example: The XP os computer has a sound card with a satellite receiver plugged into line in.
Say at 3:00pm the computer needs to fade the line in volume out and then turn up the WAVE play out and play a winamp play list.

I'd prefer to use batch files but if I have to I'll use a freeware 3rd party.
I'm very familiar with batch files and windows scheduler and automatically doing things to Wimamp. I just need a batch file or what ever to change the volume setting between Line In and WAVE.

Any help would be great thanks.

A:How do you control sound card from batch file

Hi, welcome to TSG.

You could do that with AutoHotkey, a freeware scripting tool.

You could open the Volume Control screen and use two MouseClickDrag commands to lower one volume and raise the other. Then a Run command to start up Winamp.

I'm having trouble with the volume on my front right channel using Logitech'z Z-640 speakers. For some reason it is a great deal lower than all the other channels - I've tried swapping the speakers around and sure enough, it is still the front right channel which is causing me grief.
Does anyone have any idea what could be happening? I'm sure that the volume is all set correctly in my system, the only thing I can think of is that the jack for that channel leading to the subwoofer may be faulty, but I would suspect that that would kill the channel entirely, not just mute the volume.
I'm using the 6 channel on-board sound on my Intel D865PERL motherboard with DX 9c and SoundMax 4.0
Any advice would be appreciated

Hey all,

This started last night, the only thing that I did that was out of the ordinary was ran Avast's thourough scan fully, but even after that my sound worked, so it didnt delete the driver to my knowlege, but when I do a dxdiag and look at my audio, it doesn't exist, there is no sound card installed, and allI use is my DFI Lan Party UT RDX200 CF-DR mother boards on board sound. I tried installing the driver again fom DFI and to no success, now when I went to install the drive again, I got an error saying that this device isnt approved by Windows, could windows be preventing my audio card from working?

ok so this problem was just about from the beginning. i thought i would be patient and it would go away. at first i noticed that while using msn messenger, its volume control for voice chat controled the main volume for the whole pc. so if it was low things wouldnt sound as high as i wanted. no matter if i adjusted the main volume in the control panel, which was always set to highest, the volume would still be at the mercy of Msn M. so if it was lower than usual i would have to sign into msn m and adjust it. not only does this happen with msn m. it also happens with web video applications used by youtube, livevideo, etc etc! those arent usually the culprit of low sound. its usually just msn m. even now with live messenger i have the issue. im tired of being patient so here i am

Hello :)
I hope I put this in the right area..

I've been searching for a solution to this volume problem for a while now, but to no avail. I've found others with a similar problem, but no solution. So here's the deal: I just got a new motherboard, and ever since I got it my volume control has been faulty. First of all, all sounds are very quiet, even when all volume sliders are set to maximum. Next the main volme control has no effect whatsoever on the volume of the computer. I can can slide it all the way to the top, or all the way to the bottom, nothing changes. The only thing that makes any difference is the Wave control and it barely does anything. Also, when I put "Mute all" doesn't mute. However when I put mute for Wave control, no sound comes out.
All this is incredibly annoying because I often listen to music on my computer, but now I basically can't hear it. To note: I don't have a volume control on my keyboard, or on my speakers, and I know nothing is wrong with the speakers.

If anyone could help, I would really, really appreciate it. Thanks :)

Short Story
Wave meter in volume control keeps stopping. I googled it, seems to be a virus. Performed a virus scan, came up with nothing. Did it with another anti-virus program, also showed nothing. Need help. Thanks.

Long Story
So basically, I wanted to watch a youtube video. When I played it, there was no sound. Thinking it was a simple volume problem, I checked the video volume, the small icon on the taskbar, and even went into the control panel to adjust the volume settings. I thought it might be my headphones, but I tried using the speakers and neither worked. I tried doing the voice playback, and then I could hear my voice. I thought maybe it was fixed. Played the video, no sound. At that point I thought it was my sound card. I didn't want to replace it, so I kept trying to look for a better solution. After much frustration, I managed to make my way into the volume control. Start - Control Panel - Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices - Adjust the System Volume - Audio - Sound Playback: Default Device: SoundMAX Digital Audio - Volume - Wave. I saw that the Wave option was all the way down, and moved it up. After moving it, I could hear the video crystal clear, so I closed all the windows I didn't need anymore. Well, after about 30 seconds, the volume shut off again. I went back into volume control, and the wave bar was all the way down again. I raised it, and closed the window. I was looking for the apply button to become available, for I had assumed that not app... Read more

Do you have any other soundcard-like devices like a USB headset?
Do you have the latest drivers for your soundcard installed? Please check the motherboard maker's website.
Did you get some special program with the motherboard drivers that would give you more control over sound than the Windows standard volume utility?

I'm running windows XP on an old Dell Inspiron 1501 and I'm trying to get my microphone to play directly through my speakers so I can record them both simultaneously. The only answer I've been finding is to tick the 'microphone' checkbox in the volume control playback properties panel, but I don't have a microphone checkbox. There should be a 'microphone' box under SW Synth and CD player but I don't get one apparently.I've downloaded the latest SigmaTel Audio drivers from Dell and despite not having a problem with them before this, I'm inclined to believe that they're the problem. Any ideas?

A:No microphone control in playback Volume Control panel

Okay well of course I find an answer right after posting the topic:

Those two pages detail how to get an Input Monitor checkbox which functions just like the microphone one I wanted (although you can only mute it, not alter the volume). I used Instructional Set 3 from the second page, having to add the 'RecMonitorMute' entry as detailed in the first page and I can now hear my microphone input directly through my speakers.

HOWEVER, I'm still unable to record both the microphone and speaker sound at the same time. I thought recording the 'Stereo Mix' channel with the microphone coming through the speakers would work but it isn't and I don't know why. Any ideas?

I am using a Xonar ST on Win 7 64bit......All of a sudden I noticed I was only getting sound on the right side. I reseated the card, reseated all of the connections, and changed the power connection from the PSU, and made sure on board audio was disabled.

I went into the control panel and balanced the audio....Left was set all the way down for some unknown reason. The volume on both sides will work at the proper level provided there is a separate control.....

The main system volume on the keyboard still only affects the left side. If I open winamp, the volume slider will control both left and right equally (provided the system volume is maxed out); turning down the system volume will leave the right channel at whatever level the winamp volume slider is set at.

I tried the latest driver, also tried the Uni driver. I also deleted the hsmgr file in windows/syswow64 that I saw people complaining about. I reinstalled the driver and hsmgr32 and hsmgr64 came back and are running at the same time. I unchecked them from msconfig so they do not start, but nothing has changed. Is this a driver problem or is there some other windows conflict. Since the programs seem to be able to individually control the volume I am thinking this is windows related. If I open youtube, the youtube volume slider controls both left and right. Does this have something to do with the soundcard exclusivity settings?

Is this a registry problem? It's like the volume is only monaural.

Try the Windows uninstall/reinstall. Go to the Device Manger, in the Sound section RIGHT click on the entry for the Xonar to highlight it and then LEFT click on "Uninstall". DO NOT uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. This will correct any Windows corruptions with the sound card.

A:how to control left right channel

Depends on what sound you have, whether there is an option to adjust the Left/Right balance. Some have it and some do not.

I have RealTek on my PC and there is a RealTek HD Audio Manager that has that option. My RealTek HD Audio Manager is accessed by Start/Control Panel/Hardware and Sound.

Hey! I just had issues with my Windows XP Computer.. and used the Windows Service Pack 1 disk on it to restore it. Everything is running smoothly.. except I have no sound. I know for an absolute fact that the speakers work, because when I plug them in, you can hear a small hum of the bass for a second, along with a little static.. as you typically would get when plugging speakers in. I have a very strong feeling that it's due to a lack of a sound card driver.. which I couldn't find on the device manager.. I only see:

+Sound, Video, and Game Controllers
-Audio Codecs
-Legacy Output Drivers
-Legacy Video Capture Devices
-Media Control Devices
-Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device
-Video Codecs

None of Which are collapsible.

If you can find the correct driver to install.. along with all the other drivers, I'd appreciate that. I'm still not sure what problems I'll run into when it comes to Video Drivers and such..

Thanks in advance,

I reformatted my hard drive with a friend a while back to nix a virus. Everything went great. I upgraded from windows xp to xp pro. I reinstalled all of my programs. I then noticed that my sound wasn't working. I had been planning a hardware upgrade anyway, so I went and picked up a Creative Blaster Audigy SE soundcard. I followed the instructions and installed the hardware and software. Everything installed corectly as far as I can tell. I got no error messages in the installation process, but my sound still doesn't work. I used the HP help menu and exhausted the options by updating drivers, making sure the Audigy card was the device being used, un-installing and re-installing the software, my volume controlls are all up, ectc. I was left with the option of updating my BIOS. I have no experience with such a process, and don't even know where to begin. When I look at my on-board sound devices, drivers, and codecs in the control panel, they are listed as working correctly, but the location says "unknown". I don't know if I really need to update my BIOS, or if there is an easier fix. Please help me out. I get the feeling that it's something simple that i'm just missing. Hi, first time posting here, have had trouble finding answers elsewhere!!

Basically, my question is: Will running my 2.0 speakers into the 'Dedicated Headphone Out' port of my sound card as opposed to the 'Line Out 1' port affect the sound quality in any way?

Details: (Pictures attached for visual aid)

I have a Sound Blaster Recon 3D Fatality Professional sound card, and have a set of very nice Audioengine 5+ Stereo speakers that I use for Music a little sound production, plugged into 'Line Out 1'.
My problem starts here, I just purchased a 5.1 (virtual 7.1) surround sound headset to use for gaming, but the sound card I have comes with a program called 'Trustudio' which allows you to customize many things, one being swapping between speakers and headphones, but the 'Dedicated Headphone Out', that Trustudio recognizes as headphones only supports stereo left and right.
But the new fandangle Headset I purchased uses the 'Optical Out' to produce its 5.1 sound. But this 'Optical Out' port is recognized as 'Speakers' in Trustudio and is the only way to get the 5.1 surround sound I want. So now whenever I play games or listen to music sound comes out of both my headset (sounds great) and my 2.0 speakers (which means that now it is trying to get 5.1 surround out of 2 stereo speakers and it sound distorted and horrible).
So the only thing I could think of was if I plug the Speakers in the 'Dedica... Read more

I have recently reinstalled windows on this computer (98SE) and unfortunately cannot get the sound card to function now.

The error is: "The NTKERN.VXD, MMDEVLDR.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver. (Code 2)."

This was previously a Compaq Presario computer... however the only trace of compaq that remains are the logos on the case- everything has been reinstalled fresh, including a fresh copy of Windows 98SE.

The sound card listed is ESS Allegro PCI Audio (WDM).

There are no listed conficts with this hardware.

I've tried almost everything I could think of to fix this... reinstalled the drivers several times plus tried drivers from the ESS website (after using their auto-detect feature to determine the model number-1988) and from the compaq website specific to this computer's build (Presario 5BW127). Web searches haven't brought up any solutions to this- just other people asking for an answer.

There were other hardware problems upon reinstallation- namely the modem, but fixing those problems weren't hard... it's just this sound card that doesn't want to work.

Any imput/suggestions/whatever would be amazing, thanks for your time.

I recently installed the Windows 98 updates which included some updated sound drivers. My mistake. Now everytime I'm listening to music or the radio etc. through my speakers, and am using internet explorer at the same time, I now hear all the clicks and sound effects that go along with it. Recently I've had to reinstall windows xp, which I've done before with no problems, but this time when windows loaded, the sound just didn't work. Now I've already trolled the internet for solutions, let me just state clearly that I've already tried to update/reinstall the drivers, I've tried downloading the Realtek High Def Audio driver from their website, but no matter what I do my computer just won't detect a sound card or device. I've looked on the device manager and there are no yellow exclamation points anywhere, I've tried adding new hardware, but the Realtek one does not appear on the list anymore, and when it did, it kept saying 'cannot start this device, code 10 error' or something like that. Oh yeah, I've also tried re-reinstalling windows but no dice.

A:Sound card issues

Have you put in your service packs yet? High def audio can't start without either service pack 2 or 3 can't for sure remember which. You need to do that if you have not and then reinstall your drivers.
