Q: XP Problems: Slow to load, DLL broken, freezes, modem problems the list goes on..

Hi,

thanks for taking a look at this I hope you can help.

About a week ago my comp was running fine and I had no problems. I was using Win XP Pro on my Advent 6414 PIII 1.1 GHz laptop and was using AOL to connject to the internet. I had Anti Virus guard working there too and thought things were ok....

I upgraded the AV Guard but halfway through the setup i had to turn the computer off.

When I started it up on Monday, there was a progress bar at the bottom of the screen consisting of really chunky white bars.

The XP screen hung there for ages and when it did finally load, the programs running were prone to freezing. Specific symptoms were the Display Properties panel locking up and then saying there was a WIN32.DLL error (Not Responding) and that it had to shut down. The desktop picture froze and each subsequent time i tried to start the computer it took longer and longer to start. The programs hung for longer and froze earlier and it got to the point where I lost everything. I had to reformat the entire hard drive and re-install XP.

Surely this would have cured the problems despite wiping out my extensive and dare I say excellent music collection..aaaarrghhhh!!
Alas it did not. i have re-installed XP only to find similar re-occurrences of the same problems...programs slow to load, Explorer locks up (the start menu is the main one) and now the pictures that I loaded for my desktop are being halved each time i start up.

I learned my lesson and now have Norton Anti Virus 2005 running but it has found nothing. I installed AOL from CD and also a modem for my Nokia 6310, again from CD and all seemed ok but it is acting up again.

I had to download the modem driver for my SmartLink HAMR 56k Modem so I could connect to AOL. Since I have done this though, it connects at random speeds from 2600 to 48000 bps. I have spoken to the AOL people in India(!) and they say it is a problem with the phone line and i need to turn up the gain on the line from the provider. However, a friend uses the same line and has no problem. i can only assume it is a software glitch then...

I read another thread on a different site saying that somehow the BIOS might have been affected and reverted to an auto mode which eats memory but I have no idea. i'm technically a newbie, but I thoght that a total re-format and install would solve the prob. I guess not!

Please please please help me out!

Kind regards,

Mark

PS If you know how I can edit the Flash settings on my DVD player as well to make it region free I'd appreciate that too! Though that really isn't a priority at the mo!

A: XP Problems: Slow to load, DLL broken, freezes, modem problems the list goes on..

How much do you know about installing XP?
And, what options did you select during the process?

(No, it's not a simple, linear, process.)
First of all, if you wipe the drive you should do it properly. That is, you get a copy of the Disk Manager software from your hard drive's manufactuer and you use THAT to wipe the Hard Drive from a boot disk. Low-level format the drive, which means you write zeros to the entire drive including the boot sector. That gives you a truely blank drive.

Then when you do the XP install, windows thinks the drive is "Virgin" and does a complete partition and format. No information is retained.

If you wanted to be faste (but lazy) about it, you could just delet the partitions on the drive and then make new partitions, and then install Windows, but let's be sure we've done everytyhing we can to start with a blank slate, shall we?

But you're not done yet: You need to get the device drivers from your PC mfg's website. Otherwise, all the drivers that XP doesn't have aren't there, and your hardware is in "Default" mode (if at all).

NOTE: Before you start to do any of this, check with your OEM to see if they have any special "Non-DOS" partitions on your model of laptop. If they do, all this is for naught: You'll have to get them to put those partitions back on your machine before you begin re-installing.

Compaq did this a few years back to a number of their models, and it was a huge headache to ITs everywhere.

i have a conexant hfc v90 56k data fax pci modem. i have a very hard time connecting to the internet. compaq worked on it for a year and never fixed it . this girl i ran into was looking for a difrent problem and asked me if i had a hard time connecting. she moved the modem from com1 to com2 and she moved something else to com2 that she said should be on the same port. then i had to reformat and back to square one. after she moved the ports it worked great connecting and the download more than doubled in speed. now it is back to downloads less than a 33.6 modem. i dont know where to change it. any ideas what im talking about thanks.

A:slow modem problems

Hi, scrapcity and welcome,

You might check the Compaq site to see if they have new drivers....the com port isn't going to have any effect on the connection speed....sometimes telephone lines can though...sometimes, I can connect at 50,666 all day long, and other days, I'm lucky to hit 33,600....rain plays a part sometimes as well....

You might also check in your modem settings in the control panel, modems, properties and set your maximum speed higher....

Also, call your internet provider and make sure you have your dial-up configured to their needs....

Hey I've been having major problems with my Laptop.
Every ten or so minutes when my McAfee 2010 security suite disables real-time scanning it'll re-enable itself causing a lot of alarming pop-up boxes which is slowing my computer. Not sure whats causing it but it seems like malware.
Next theres this process which starts at windows start-up (DivxUpdate.exe), I don't think this is actually a part of divx. I've read somewhere that it is a form of autorun malware, it consumes 99% of my cpu majorly slowing down my computer, I think I may have similar malware on here that are problematic.
Also my firefox frequently say that there's an unresponsive script which temporarily freezes my whole computer and when I finally manage to get to task manager I have to end the process which seems to be using a regular amount of cpu and memory.
I made a topic exactly 1 month ago but nobody answered so I thought I'd make a new one seeing as the problems are progressing and building up.

Thanks for any help I'm provided with.

I want to set up my modem so that it automatically loggs off if there was no activity for say 15 minutes. I thought I did this through Control Panel / Modems / Properties / Connection and ensured that the box is checked next to "Disconnect a call if idle for more than ..." However, it doesn't seem to work. It only disconnects after 3 hrs & 58 mins or 3 hrs & 59 mins (4 hours essentially).

#2
I was getting errors in performing the diagnostic check (within Control Panel / Modems) on an older modem (Diamond SupraMax 56i PCI, about 2-3 years old), so I thought there was a problem with it. I replaced it with a Best Data 56HP92-PCT. All seems to work now (diagnostic check ok), except for the speed.

Before with my old modem, I was getting connected at around 42K-49K. Afterwards, I am sometimes getting on at around 12K-30K with big performance problems. Redials won't solve the problem. Before my ICM (Internet Call Manager) would download messages at around 19KB/sec. Afterwards, it was 0.6KB/sec.

Another indicator of problems. The little network icon that shows at the bottom right corner after modem login, the one that has two little computer screens, lights up (seldomly) in a "flash" like manner instead of remaining constantly lit during a download process.

I was also wondering with all of the PIF viruses going around now, my Norton AntiVirus is working overtime to protect my incoming mail from infecting my computer. I seem to get about 10... Read more

The Internet on our westell modem model 6100; would cut out. It would flash on then flash off. And sometimes it would turn red. We have a asante rotuer coming off of the modem and thats how i would connect. But since i moved my computer back upstairs I am now connected threw our Belkin wireless router model F5D8230-4 v2. So the modem hasn't screwed up lately since i moved upstairs. But now our Belkin is. It will reset like atleast 15 times in one day. So thats very frustrating to deal with. But now the internet has gone very slow. I have no idea why. I "restore to default" on Belkin and Westell. And there both slow, and the Belkin is still reseting. my ISP is frontier. I am getting a new Belkin wireless router/modem in one, model F5D8236-4. I am also connected threw Ethernet and when I connect with my iPod on to the Belkin router it is slow!
So if you need anything thing to assist you in helping me just tell me.

Hello,

I wasn't sure if I should put this under malware or vista...

For a couple months my computer has been extremely slow to do anything 70% of the time, including simple things like open a folder, play an mp3, open control panel, etc. It has occasionally had periods (several days in a row) where it will run really loud for 5 seconds before shutting down and restarting on its own. When it does this it does it consistently every 45 minutes. Then it will go a week or so without doing that all on its own. (I have been good about keeping the vents clean and blowing out the interior).

But last week, sister in law came in from Miss., and used facebook a great deal(that's the only change we can think of), which we've never used, and the computer went nuts. Now it freezes anywhere from 30 seconds to 10 minutes after starting in normal mode. The power button has to be held down to shut it off and then pushed again to start again. It starts and runs fine in safe mode with networking, no problems. But starting up in normal mode now, it consistently has a problem starting either 4 or 5 times in a row, each progressively worse, with windows wanting to do a startup repair on the last one, before finally starting successfully in normal mode, only to freeze shortly thereafter. It will freeze whether we're doing anything or not.

I have Trendmicro antivirus and their help site told me to run Hijackthis which I did and then it suggested posting that log in one of these for... Read more

Please can someone help me??? Tearing hair out - and I don't have much!

Out of the blue, for no apparent reason, my problems appeared despite having up to date Norton AV and firewall.

Symptoms: very slow to load programs, extended periods of frozen screen
sometimes requiring a shutdown to restart. Now the computer will not install windows updates and will not now reinstall Norton - which was disabled with the original problem. When typing - in MS Word or web page forms - the cursor moves randomly around teh screen. I have to reposition it where I was, type a few words, and it's off again.

Definitely seems like a virus but neither Norton nor AVG or ad-aware have discovered anything untoward.

Sorry for the length but I would be really grateful if anyone can suggest a solution or indeed what the proble is.

Thanks

CJ

Do u have any other antivirus? I would prefer Kaspersky Antivirus. I found this antivirus and NOD 32 the best till date, and are also very less system resource hungry. Norton cannot compete with these antiviruses and is very heavy.

Recently, (ehh, more like around January..)
I updated from my Acer-based Vista Home.. not basic but the other one
But anyways, I formatted my computer, I edited my partitions; made the system's HD bigger than the second one because I just need that for back-up.
And then basically, I reinstalled everything I needed except useless Acer **** that I had beforehand.
Now, I have a clean Windows 7, correct?
Yeah, no.
It's either that the Windows 7 was infected; not genuine; pure bull**** trojan etc..
Or, it's something I downloaded while I had Windows Seven.
At first, it was mouthwateringly fast.
No lag, all games ran smooth as ****.
Five months later (about a week ago)
I downloaded a couple o' apps for my MSN Messenger which I think may have been the cause to my computer's stupidity lately..
MesengerDiscovery
and NudgeMania
Well, basically, MD lets me !imitate my contacts, and NudgeMania, well, unlimited nudge spam.. lol.
Pretty much useless programs without a purpose
But anyways, I downloaded this, and had to system restore several times because of just nudgemania
so I stopped using that.
And then MD.
Yeah, I don't know why I didn't think of using a system restore , but
after I installed it, my computer lagged HEAVILY.
I'm not talking "oh my ****ing god, d2jsp is taking 20 seconds when it usually takes 2 (yeah, this was also happening to me though) to just load the login page.."

Hi there,

My Laptop is ill. A brief history over the last 2 months:-

My laptop started crashing which I believe was the Blue Screen of Death. It was so bad it was doing it after 10 seconds of use, and then during safe mode. Suddenly, after some attempts to restore and virus scans its stopped. And the laptop is seemingly running OK. However, I am having to use it carefully, running one prog at a time and giving ample time to set up.

The laptop, without question, is running very slowly. It currently takes approx 10 mins to load and begin using everytime. I currently have little hard disk space as I have today downloaded a lot of photos but prior to this it was very slow. The one major side effect I have noticed since it started working again all of a sudden is that when I use CC Cleaner (every 2 days or so) it 6gb of Windows Error Reporting to delete. Now, my computer rarely crashes now so I dont know when or where these reports come from. They are so regular though I'm sure it cant be any good.

Anyway, something is up. What it is, I'm not sure.

Any help gratefully recieved.

Hey,

My internet has begun to slow down lately. Page loads and transitions have been taking 10-15 seconds at times when they are usually "instant". I can't figure out why; I haven't really been doing much lately except browsing yahoo and youtube and normal stuff. I haven't installed any big programs or anything that would slow my entire computer down. I've also noticed increased lag in Counter-Strike. My brother has had more unsupervised time lately, when I'm not home, so I don't know where he goes or what he does. Although, I've run virus scans and stuff and they've been relatively clean, but for all I know it could be something more complicated than a little bit of malware. I'm confused as to what might be the problem. Any help would be great. If you need info on my computer or network let me know.

Thanks

A:Solved: Slow connection/page load problems

Well, I'd certainly be doing some complete virus/malware scans. Try an on-line virus scanner like Trend Housecall and also maybe Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

Everything slows down out of nowhere for no appearent reason, then sometimes go back to normal. IE redirects to other pages, if you try to search from IEs search box it goes to the page cannot be found screen. System will sometimes freeze up. Online virus scans do not complete.

You might not have a malware problem. There's a "batch" of general fixes & checks that you can do.

run chkdsk /r
check event viewer
check device manager for flagged devices (make sure to check "show hidden devices")
download, install & run "speedfan" and check your temps

I bought an Emerson Swithchoboard about three or four months ago. It has been real helpful up to last week. Since then the modem light is dimly lit even when no one is connected to the computer. It doesn't seem to work either. Also it seems that my Modem speed has started changing too. It is a 56k and sometimes after connection it will say it is a 44 or even 53 sometimes and I can't get on the internet when it is connected sometimes. Please could someone help me.

A:Problems with Emerson Switchboard and Modem problems

Well a 56K modem never connects at 56K - it is limited to 53K by the FCC I believe. And then its affected by line quality, number of devices on the line, the ISP and several other factors.

If possible, disconnect the switchboard and see if the modem works then. If it is the only thing plugged into the phone line Nothing on the same line anywhere in the house) and it still doesn't work then its either the physical modem or software (drivers or windows). If it works then it may be caused by the swtichboard or by having too many devices on the same line.

Hi,
This is my first post here, so I hope that I follow all of the rules. And thanks in advance for any help. My computer has been running slow for a while, and I think one of my kids might have gone to a website that allowed some malware in. My OS is Windows XP SP3. I have noticed a few things, 1. Had a problem with Adobe acrobat reader, it wouldn't update for some reason, and couldn't open PDF files for a while, after uninstalling and reinstalling several times, I think it is now working. Also noticed more recently when working in MS Word 03 every once in a while it won't let me save files. Now I am noticing that when I have Internet Explorer open for a while, IE tries to pop open a new window, to which the IP address is blocked by K9 web protection 91.212.226.6 is the IP. After googling this IP address, I found a few posts leading me to think there might be a trojan kicking around on my pc. I have run MBAM and Hijackthis in an attempt to find the culprit, but MBAM comes up clean, and I can't find it on Hijackthis. Any help woould be appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi guys

This is my first post in this forum so hello!

Title was difficult to put succinctly so I will describe the problems I'm having.

I recently did a complete re-instal of XP Pro. I wiped all hard drives, installed a new one, physically cleaned inside of PC with air, resat all cards, upgraded to SP3 for first time, installed software slowly and carefully and installed Avira Antivirus, Agnitum Outpost Firewall (disabled Windows Firewall first) and also installed Spybot S&D.

So, I am having various problems that I've never had before:

1. Startup is quite slow - this could be to do with firewall and anti-virus loading up

2. If I have any USB external drives attached and on, the boot will hang

3. My system tray lacks several icons that should be there; volume control, anti-virus

4. Strange things with right-clicking causing system crash - e.g. I grabbed 3 photos off desktop, dropped them onto bin and right-clicked right away to empty bin - system hung and I had to hard crash out and restart PC

5. When I open my new internal second HD, it takes ages to display all the items (a lot of videos) slowly writing out all their dimensions down a list. If I try any right click actions whilst it's doing this, the system hangs

6. Browsers - I use Firefox, have the new v3 installed, I installed latest Java and Flash but have problems with some sites. One relies on Java for its online tutorial I need but all I get is a blank white screen with 'done' in th... Read more

I bought an eMachines laptop (I know off brand) but it was on Black Friday for $395. In addition, I bought an external hard drive. When I plugged the external hard drive into my laptop; the harddrive downloaded a backup software called Memeo. This backup software would pop up everytime I downloaded something or wanted to uninstall or open a file. So I eventually uninstalled the backup software (MEMEO) and my computer began to run EXTREMELY sluggish and slow. 1. I ran a Nortan scan believing that it would fix my computer situation. Hello,

I have two broken laptops, resulting in 14 gb mixed (8,4,2 different speeds/makes) ram of which may be faulty, an i7 processor which may be faulty, a duo core 2*2.4 ghz which may be faulty, an nvidia gtx 460m which may be faulty, a dodgy screen and laptop case and potentially broken motherboard from an asus g53jw. As well as spare power supplies, hard drives and all the other usual laptop spares. I was told by asus rep to get my laptop fixed would cost around 500++eur as it is out of warranty and if the processor or ram or gfx card is shot then it will be expensive. So fxxk that! Although odds are it is only one of these components that needs replacing.

So, with all these pricey components, of which some may be faulty, (although I reckon I can eliminate faulty component via trial and error), I have concluded it is best to try and build my own laptop if worthwhile. I have built PCs over the years although this is quite easy and mostly been successful projects.

What is best approach? As in the best folding hard exterior housing case/shell, screen and motherboard for a budget of about 150-300 eur? I think I need a custom case ideally with a screen and a motherboard that fits my other bits and bobs.

Thanks

A:99 problems and 2 broken laptops!

The only parts available are OEM parts from existing models. I guess you could ebay a bunch of broken "parts only" hardware from eBay and try to piece something together. But you won't be buying new replacement parts with that budget and it wouldn't be cost effective even if your budget was higher.

Also, whatever case you select, you will need a matching motherboard from that manufacturer (for that model). Unlike desktop PC's, laptop parts are not standard or interchangeable. The cpu selection is then dictated by the few models supported by the motherboard.

Pay to get it fixed, find a decent used model, or find a new model. The budget you noted above should be enough for a new laptop. More depending on speed and options.

OK.. here goes..

ever since i installed windows xp, i have had mostly nothing but problems...

to start, there is too much security on it. i can't have a simple home network on 2 windows xp computers. i just need to be able to use 1 printer on 2 computers. if file sharing doesn't work, i don't care.

second, my cd-rom bay doesn't read any type of cds (dvds, cdroms, etc.) it starts to make noise, then slows down, moving, making weird noises, and freezes up the computer. its hard to get it to eject as well, so i have to pop out the bay (this is only on the laptop), stick it back in, and right when it reads, i have to eject reeeally fast.

third, (it had windows 98se at first), office xp small business work on 98, but ever since i installed windows xp, it won't. it has all of the program files, but says (in the microsoft word startup screen) that it is an uninstalled version and an unknown user. when it gets into micro word, it says (access privelages are not installed on this user's name. please reinstall the product).

any more information that you need please feel free to ask, although i pretty much gave you all of it. thank you

A:a list of problems..

sounds like you didn't do a clean install. I would backup all data and delete everything and reinstall....or do a dual boot. (most people that I see that first did a dual boot with 98 or 2k eventually deleted the older OS once they had XP down).

I have an HP Pavilion DV6000, and recently I have been experiencing a whole lot of issues. I will list them off, and give a brief description on each.

-CPU Spikes to 100%, and then drops back down to lower numbers in the 1-30% range
-No desktop background: I have a solid black screen as a background, with my task bar and icons only. What's wrong with that?
-It constantly freezes up on me
-Runs slow, I don't know what that is all about
-My Recovery Drive (D) has 2GB free of 11GB, and I have no clue if that is normal or not
-I have no vista recovery disks, and I would like to have my hard drive re formatted so that I have a fresh computer to start over with
-Pretty sure there are more problems, but these are some of my major problems.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Tanner B.

First please get Spybot S&D to clear out most of the spyware.

Short tutorial and download link here:
http://tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT/

Fix everything SpybotSD labels in red.
Download CW Shredder:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip
Unzip, run and hit the ->fix tab to fix all found problems

CW Shredder takes advantage of security holes in windows so you should install all critical as well as hot fixes available from windows update.

Then after reboot:
Download 'Hijack This to its own folder http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log, load it in Notepad, and copy its contents here. Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Thank you all for your welcoming messages. Now to my problems;
1) I cannot download SP 1. Error code 800736B3. I tried the Readiness Tool, KB8947821 - v14--x64.msu, I turned off my Trend Security, I tried a manual download; still get the same error code.
2) Grandsons game Indiana Jones gets to a section where the only way to get it off is to shut down the PC (ouch). Esc key doesn't do it, and there is no X or back button.
3) My Sansa Sandisk MP 3 player. Won't change from one Menu choice to another, FM radio to Player to Recorder. My Windows 7 will not format it but my very old Win. xp laptop will. But all that did was wipe out my songs!
4) Have a game disk (a copy on a CD-R) that would play on my old PC but not this one.
I would have put more info about my PC but don't know where to find it.
I do have Cable, is that the "Speed"?
Will appreciate any help given.

This could be a sign your HDD is starting to fail.
The Game CD may have been been burned but not Finalized so it will only play on the computer that burned it. You would need to put back on the computer it is created on, open the burning software and choose to Finalize the disc.

I have only had this laptop (HP Pavilion 14) for about a year. The following problems have been going on for about two months. I have run diagnostic tests through HP support and through the startup menu. I have installed all the updates, including manually checking each driver to see if it was updated. I took it to a PC repair shop, and they couldnt figure out what was wrong. They did a clean install of Windows 10, but the same problems persist. So, here comes the list of problems:- if it is on and I let it go to sleep or close the lid, the screen wont turn back on. I have to hold the power button down and then restart it. One night, took the battery out and plugged it in, then let it fall asleep and left it for about 10 hours. At that time, I was able to use it no problem. So I thought maybe the battery was the problem. I ordered a new battery, but after replacing it, the same problems persisted. Now, to 'fix' the problem, I changed the power settings to never put my computer to sleep.- when I try to shut it down the right way, through the start menu -> power -> shut down, the screen goes black, but the computer is still running and the LED lights stay on. I thought maybe it was just cooling down before turning off, but sometimes when I leave it like that, I will come back several hours later and it will still be the same. So I have to hold down the power button again to get it to shut off.- sometimes, it wont turn on without being plugged in, even ... Read more

It seems I am having a whole slew of problems recently, especially today. I am at my whits end. Something has to work.

- Blue screen saying memory crash dump or whatever it says. It moved too quick for me to really see what it said.

- It restarted, and everything was fine. Or so it seemed. I tried opening a few of my programs BEFORE the crash and they open, but sort of just sit there and don't do what they are supposed to do.

- I noticed I had some window updates, so I updated those which took about an hour (there were 9), it restarted and then that is when I had my other problem. This Cabinet Maker Loss Less Data Compression Tool thing. It appeared out of nowhere and I have never seen it before. At first I thought it was a virus but thankfully I got to a website quickly that said it was part of Dell's inner workings.

Nothing is opening correctly. I should mention I hardly ever store anything on my Dell hard drive. This one has been sent and resent to Dell over a dozen times for problems. So now, as a person that runs a company and does a lot of work from my laptop (99%) I NEVER store anything on my Dell. I have a Toshiba External hard drive and recently that has been "clicking" so I bought another hard drive a "Passport" which I copy and pasted everything over to. Now my Toshiba is not even showing up in my Computer Hard Disk area on my computer. I have tried everything and I am at a loss as to what to do.

So, I want to start out saying that this website describes exactly how I feel.

I have something evil living in my computer... I cannot open ANY anti-virus software, and cannot even install most of them. I tried to install one of Trend Micro's trials, and it said I was disconnected from the Internet WHILE I WAS STILL ON IT! It takes three back-and-forth clicks to open any Internet page via Google. It started out only blocking those applications that related to anti-virus, and then just went awry. SUPERAntiSpyware is the only thing that I can open (in alternate mode because it blocked the regular one), but it can't do a full scan before it just closes. It always finds a Rootkit.Agent/Gen-UACFake. Don't know what that is, but I figure you guys might. I am a clueless college student who desperately needs her computer, so this is all very frustrating since I do not know how to fix it.

My viral software had just run out, and of course, a few days later, I'm infected... :/ Any help would be appreciated while I can still access the Internet...

Ack...quite a mess. This will take a few steps to clean. Please update your version of hijackthis and move it to it's own folder on C: (C:\HJT)

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run ad-aware SE with VX2 add-on cleaner, Spybot Search & Destroy (with updated database) and CWShredder as these programs will clean a lot of the crap out first. All links to programs are in my signature. Ok..on to the log?..

If you have a highspeed connection please Run an online virus scan from TrendMicro Please select the ?autoclean? option when prompted to do so.

Download DelDomains.inf
Right-click and select..... Save Target As

To use: Right-click and select....... Install (no need to restart)
**Note** This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone"

Download and install CleanUp http://cleanup.stevengould.org/

Open My Computer-->Tools-->Folder Options-->View-->Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files and click YES and then OK

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Open add/remove programs and remove the following if listed.

This am, my computer restarted itself...when I looked at the screen it was a blue CHKDSK screen. When I allowed it to scan the disk it got to 100% and then a blue screen appeared and stated "A problem is...." couldnt read the rest the computer restarted and got to the CHKDSK screen and started all over again...same thing.

I hit a key and didnt let it finish.

When I went to check my email, I cannot delete any emails from my inbox. There is nothing showing in my deleted file. I did a search for Deleted Items.dbx and nothing was found.

I am at a loss at what to do.

I have Windows XP. Any help would be appreciated.

... That's strange... I don't have a solution for you, but I recommend that you back up your critical files to an external storage medium in case you have to format your C: drive or your computer goes kaput.

#1 My computer will not shut down. It will get to the shutting down screen and just sit their, I left it on for an entire night and when awoke the next morning low and behold its still not working. I've made sure that any active programs or process's would were shut down but that did not help.

#2 I'm unable to download, or in some cases re-download certain programs. I made sure to allow them through the firewall, have tried installing as an admin but that would not work. The installation window would just sit their either saying please wait or just have the bar stop at a certain point with nothing happening. Also when I try and re-install programs that I'd have removed it would have the same result even after successfully installing it previously.

A:List of Problems

So starting from the last one and going up.
Problem 3 - Try placing the disc in the drive and shutting down, upon reboot enter into system setup (the BIOS) look for the boot configuration and set it to boot to CD Rom first. This should try to read the disc prior to reading the hard drive. It should quickly flash 'Press any key to boot from CD-Rom...' At that point his space bar and it should work from there.

Problem 2 - I had a similar problem when attempting to install iTunes on my PC. I found an uninstaller program called Revo Uninstaller that would clean the registry of the errored install files. Be careful using a registry cleaning tool as it can be devastating if you remove the wrong thing. Another suggestion is try installing the file in safe mode.

Problem 1 - One thing to shutdown windows that you could try is to go to your processes by hitting ctrl Alt del at the same time. Manually shutdown each process till you just have task manager open. Then shutdown. This sometimes will allow it to shutdown and fix the issue. You can also try a system repair that will fix any corrupted files.

Hope this helps.

If I click the Start button, and then on Control Panel, the start menu goes away and I have an hour glass next to the pointer (like normal), except the hour glass goes away, the Control Panel never opened, and now, I cannot get the Start menu to even come up again. I can't right click anything either.

I hope this is the HJT thing you'd need to see:

This sounds like a tough one....It's a client computer I picked up today to fix. Normally I'd reformat to save time, but I actually wouldn't mind seeing if it can be fixed.

Symptoms:
- Can't install some cleaning tools (spybot, malwarebytes anti-malware). Open item results in nothing happening.
- Can't update cleaning tools (trend micro, avg, adaware, super antispyware).
- Can get to some websites eg. google, and can search for stuff. But if you click on a security related result, you get sent to pcprivacycleaner website. Other sites end up with a "Internet explorer cannot display the webpage" page.
- Can't run Kaspersky online.
- Desktop wallpaper is blue with "Warning! Your pc is infected with spyware!" or something like that.
- Desktop and Screensaver tabs are missing in Display Properties.
- When screensaver activates, you get a fake blue screen error and reboot animation. You have to press Esc to get back to what you were doing.
- Notepad doesn't work unless in safe mode. In normal mode, DEP activates and closes it down.

Things I've tried so far:
- Scanned with AVG, Trend, adaware, super antispyware, even though I can't update them.
- Run CCleaner.
- Tried running a portable version of Spybot, but nothing happens.
- Reset IE7
- Checked network settings
- disabled firewalls
- Currently running portable Avast (overnight).
- Out of curiosity, checked that Combofix won't run but Vundofix will (didn't let it do anything though)
- DSS won't let m... Read more

Sorry about not following the guidance when posting!

Last night i had big problems and i have spent hours and hours trying to fix from help off the internet and other sources. I finally have given up looking and thought i would just post a thread on it on here.

Here are some of the problems

-When loading up after turn on adware says programs are running in the background and may cause harm etc. I do a scan it an says to reboot which i think doesnt change anything and sometimes a message saying could not find any files to submit

-Google links send me somewhere completely random unless i used open in new tab. And i noticed it has the log TSF on the icon in tabs which is rather odd.

-Certain programs i cant get on such as Malwarebytes Anti malware, spy bot search and destroy. Also some programs random quit or minimise like Football manager and internet pages

-I thought i sorted out the problem when i deleted Personal Antivirus but the problem hasnt ended

-System restore doesn't work

The GMER thing wouldn't open after i extracted it

Hi,

It is very important that you disable AVG8 and teatimer before we begin our fix:

to do this:

Select Advanced Settings.
In the left hand pane, scroll down to "Resident Shield".
In the main pane, deselect the option to "Enable Resident Shield."

If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
On the left hand side, Click on Tools
Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer.<--You need to do this for it to take effect

Download Combofix from either of the links below. You must rename it before saving it.
Save it to your desktop.

I've had Win7 Ultimate for some weeks. Before that I got XP, didn't have any problems with that. My motherboard is Asus P5K. Recently, I've started getting random disconnection problems with Internet. One of the following happens:

- the Network notification icon gets the yellow exclamation mark
- the same icon gets the bluish please wait circle (rolling animation)
- no problem notification with the icon but still network doesn't work

By "doesn't work" I mean ping gives "host unreachable" but ipconfig says I do have the normal IP address. If it goes to this state, it will not help if I do ipconfig /release, /renew, close all programs, go to stanby and back or hibernate and come back. Only a restart may help. However, it may take 2-3 restarts before the network starts working again. Also power cable off and back doesn't necessarily help.

So, it's pretty random. However, restarting the computer does help (sometimes). Is my motherboard broken? Is there anything I can try? I have the latest Windows Updates and the latest BIOS firmware.

Nothing wrong with my ADSL modem or router, I have other computers connected and they don't loose Internet at all.

I've started having various problems cropping up for a couple month now.. Among them being:
Periodic, random de-selection of the current active window, rendering it seemingly unresponsive to input until clicked on again.
"The Windows Security Center service can't be started."
"windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." Upon looking for fixes, I noticed that I don't even HAVE the windows update service anymore.
Every time on start-up, an error appears, so soon that the desktop hasn't even appeared after logging in, claiming that string.dll is missing.
Cannot turn Windows Firewall on, as once I attempt to do so I get the message "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x80070424"
Also: "There was an error opening the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in" ... "The Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in failed to load. Restart the Windows Firewall service on the computer that you are managing. Error code 0x6D9."
Task manager used to fail to start. "The program can't start because pcwum.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."
Right before my last system restore, various drivers went missing or were broken, including, from what I remember, the one that my adaptor uses to connect to the internet. I could not connect either wirelessly or via direct conn... Read more

Recently I had a pretty bad virus on my computer. I sent it to someone and he removed various trojans and installed his recommended virus-protection softwares on it.

It's not a result of him doing anything to it, as it was happening before, I assume as a result of the virus, but now when I log on, after typing in my password, it displays the 'welcome' loading screen for a ridiculously long time (about a minute), but then the screen goes completely black and all I see is my pointer. After another minute or two it actually loads the desktop.

Then there's Fraps and some other programs, which, before the virus, opened fine, but now asks for admin permission in order to open. What's even stranger is that it can't uninstall. When I start the uninstall process it just opens the 'uninstall' window and gets stuck there.

My computer also seems to be slower than usual.

Everything seems so messed up, should I just totally wipe my hard drive and reinstall everything? Most of my files are stored through Steam, which is mainly online, so I only have about 10 gigabytes of saved files to back up...

2. Flash media players often break down in sound as well as some intro screens to games from steam
3. Some steam games do not work when I have the required specs to run them.
4. My computer sometimes experiences complete freeze with no blue screen
5. I have Avira antivirus on my computer even though I removed it and can't access it, uninstall it or re install it and a pop-up claims so every time I start windows. (It might have been removed through regisedit or control panel (a friend did so).
6. Steam videos of game in their online store runs very choppy.
7. Another problem I have is already mentioned on another thread.

What do you guys need from me to fix this?

A:A list of problems with my computer

We need to know make and model of brand name system or hardware if custom build especially psu which probably has something to do with #2.
Freezes could also be psu but also video card, ram or hard drive so we need to know all of that.
Avira is probably just removal of entry from startup, "Run, msconfig,ok,then startup" and uncheck entries for Avira, hit "apply" and ok.

Alright, so I've had this HP computer for a while now. Over the years I've added 2.5 gigs of RAM, a graphics card (Which overheated a while ago), and have tried to upkeep it well.
Well recently I've ran into a large list of problems with the computer. I was gone on vacation when whatever happened happened, so I'm not entirely sure what caused it.

Basically, here are the MAJOR problems.
1. I cannot access my computer via start menu or command prompt. I also cannot directly browse through folders, I can only do it by using a program (Such as AVG). I cannot move any files from folder to folder, unless they are on the desktop. (However clicking on a folder causes nothing to happen.) When I click on My Computer it does nothing.
2. Control Panel does the same thing. Clicking on it does nothing.
3. I have no sound, and my network identification thing on the taskbar is gone. I've went through the "usual" methods of trying to get it to work, and they are not highlighted. My internet works fine, but my sound does not work. (Have tried replacing speakers.
4. When starting up my computer, or trying to open task manager, an error message appears (I can still do both, restarting and opening task manager will work after exiting off of it.) The error is The application has failed to start because WTSAPI32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

Now, I've went through some steps to try to fix it.

I have run a virus scan from AVG, a spyware scan... Read more

A:A rather...long list of problems.

Hello and welcome to TSF.

So frankly, the question here seems to be...what can you do with that computer?

Let's start by getting some information: http://www.techsupportforum.com/f217...ns-452654.html

It sounds like part of Windows is corrupt. Have you tried Safe Mode? Is it functional? If so, please open an elevated command prompt (Start>type cmd>right-click>Run as administrator) and run the command sfc /scannow. Let the scan finish before doing restarting or closing the command window.

Good luck.

So I have been having issues with my computer for about a week now, it all started when Google Chrome tabs started crashing frequently and it has just gotten worse. I started keeping track of most of my problems and attempts at resolving them so I guess I'll just list them here. I'm sorry if this isn't where or how I'm supposed to post this, but I'm at wits end after spending so much time trying to figure this out. PLEASE READ ALL OF IT. I've tried quite a few things, so I don't want to be told to do them again.
Frequent tab crashes in Chome, eventually ending up with BSOD - Memory managementStopped using Chrome, switched to Firefox. No BSOD's yet, but Firefox still crashes, just not as frequently

A couple of games I play have been having issues with corrupted files.League of Legends, missing sounds and textures in game. Most of the time at the launch screen, says I have corrupted game files, so it re-downloads them. Doesn't solve the problems.
Dark Souls 3, I eventually can't progress past a certain point, so I verify my game's cache in Steam, comes back saying game files have been corrupted, so it re-downloads them.

I had a few programs crash at start up, didn't start logging my problems when some of them happened, but I did write down one, DBInstall, it's an NVIDIA program.
Windows Update didn't work
At this point I had run a few tests; memtest(which I didn't conclude anything from because I couldn't see the results. Screen wasn't centered because it doesn't work well w... Read more

PLEASE READ. I need help
To start this whole thing, I'm not sure exactly what I did. I downloaded "Toolwiz Care," and used all I could to fix my computer(before I was just slow and hadn't been urned on in 5 years). There are two thing that might have done it(I'll get to a list of things in a few) was the registry cleaner or the startup optimizer. I didn't check to see if system restore was on before any of this, so I had no restore points. For the obvious reasons is why I think the registry cleaner might of had something to do with it. But the startup optimizer is because about 20 services and processes dont stay on. They start then stop. I've tried going back, and restarting them, on msconfig, and services, and the startup optimizer. Nothing. One of them is windows diagnostics.

I can't run troubleshooter.
I have no Internet access.
Media player won't run.
Sound doesn't work, not even with headphones.
iTunes won't work.
When I log on after a reboot, I have a notpad document called desktop.ini, two of them automatically open.
That's all of the problems ive noticed.

Things I've tried:
System restore
And every method of boot setup there is.
I don't have a restore disk, I got the computer with windows already installed.
No computer with access to the Internet and a disk burner.
No USB flash drive.
Tried updating drivers. No go
I've tried fixes for some of the individual problems, but that list is too long. I've been trying nonstop since the 16th(t... Read more

A:Long list of problems. Please help?

Go into your start menu, go to all programs, go to accessories, right click command prompt, click run as administrator, accept the dialog box (or type in your administrator password if you are a standard user), type into the command prompt sfc /scannow. This will try to repair the system files. Keep running it until you stop getting errors or until you keep getting the same error. We'll go from there.

I'm posting in here straightaway and don't really want to touch anything or do anything without seeking expert knowledge first on the correct procedures.

Tried to download Adobe Photoshop last week, the full trial version from a legitimate sorce. Immediately my laptop crashed, I uninstalled it straightaway.

Since then, I've been having to do constant reboots, gots lots of error messages, my sound has gone completely and from time to time it's running very slow, then speeds up again. Taskbar icons are being moved around and the taskbar itself has changed colour once or twice. My antivirus was affected and refused to run (Avira), uninstalled it and now have another one in place etc etc ...

My head is spinning trying to fathom it all out.

Could I please, most respectfully ask for some fast assistance to at least help to get this system a little more stable and to get my sound back again, so at least I can get on with some work whilst I am experiencing these problems?

Cannot get into the Device Manager - receive a message:

mmc.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005)

On start up I'm getting these error boxes appearing:

ACU.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005)

The above one pops up twice.

AVGNT.exe - Application Error
The application failed to inialize properly (0xc000001d)

AVG is not on this system that was uninstalled ages ago.

hi,

the other day i started my computer, and i got loads of errors, and dll initialisation failures.
here are some errors:

- 0xc000012d
- 0xc0000142
- 1607: Cannot install installshield scripting runtime
- blue stopscreen error: 0x00000007E
- blue stopscreen error: 0x00000008E (not sure about this one anymore)

i've read several solutions for some of those elsewhere, but i regret to say that i do NOT have a XP install disc

Any help, no matter what of these errors/problems, is welcome :|

Thanks in advance...

A:List of annoying problems in XP

For clarification, did you have failures prior to 'the other day"? Have you scanned for infections?

0x00000012: TRAP_CAUSE_UNKNOWN
By its very nature, this error means that the cause of the identified problem is unknown. Try to track it down by noting the history of the problem, when it appeared, and what changes were made to the system since the problem first appeared, as well as noting what activity you are attempting at the time the error message appears

0xC0000142: DLL Initialization Failure
Its instances all appear to indicate that an application failed to initialize properly. Usually this is traceable to a DLL initialization failure.

0x8E errors are caused by hardware.

Wow I can't believe that this forum is available to help with our problems. This is really great!

My computer has been out of control for months, I have ran spybot, ad-aware, and trend micro numerous times. They always detect problems and I delete them but they keep re-occuring. Currently trend micro says that I have 11 trojan type problems. I also have many unwanted items running on my task manager. Two that I have been battling with are called wtoolsA.exe and wtoolsS.exe. These suckers are tough.

Quick Question?
Other online tips have suggested detailed processes for removal including starting up in safe mode and deleting documents/settings files and / or system files. If I simply check a box and click fix on HJT will it also delete all of the associated bad files? I really want to take back my browser and the thought of these files remaining on my system (even if disabled) sort of bothers me.

Alright to start off all these problems started occurring after I installed my new graphics card. I would love to revert back to my old one but sadly thats not possible as it is fried.* PC locks up on reboot or shutdown.* Firefox Locks up and cannot be "end tasked"* Xfire Locks up and cannot be "end tasked"* Teamspeak starts but nothing happens and it cannot be "end tasked"Now I have had the issue before I reformated where my pc locks up on reboot or shutdown and I posted about it awhile ago here. Unfortunately doing what was said in that topic didn't work for me this time. Now on the bigger issues with Firefox, Xfire, and Teamspeak, I have posted on the their support forums but got no reply so i was hoping someone from bleeping computer could help me.I don't really know what information you need but for now I can give you my PC specs if that will help.PC: Dell dimension 4600OS: XP home editionGraphics card: AGP ATI Radeon X1300 proRam: 1 gigThis is all the info I can think of right now. I need you to go to the How To Use Event Viewer, and list the last four error messages. Remember to right click on the error message and select Properties for the full error report. This will give us a better understanding of what is wrong.

You should really have started a fresh topic - but

Uninstall Purity Scan from Add/Remove programs if it's present
see http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.purityscan.html for some info
(at least I think that this is the winservn that you have)

Use Ctrl-Alt-Del to get to task Manager and End the following process
C:\WINDOWS\System32\winservn.exe

Run HijackThis again, push Scan and place a check mark next to the following items using your mouse. Doublecheck so you don't miss one.
Next, close all browser Windows, and push the 'Fix checked' button in HijackThis

I am currently taking a look at a pc for a friend due to some hardware issues and I noticed the presence of the uglies. This isnt really a hardware forum but Im not too savvy when it comes down to advanced removal. I took a HJT log from the machine which Ill copy below. The system is an Intel based 2.0 ghz XP home machine with 512mb of memory. My basic removal routines didnt cut it, and I would like to nip this before tackling the hardware issues.

Thanks

also the cd/dvd drive doesnt work on the computer so anything involving a disk is invalid

A:long list of problems

you need professional help, IN PERSON, PHYSICALLY.
if you're at the point of throwing your pc out the window, then data loss i guess isnt an issue and this is a good time for you to learn how to FORMAT and INSTALL windows.
1) NTFS is a type of file system or a method that certain operating systems (like windows xp, 2000 etc) write down information onto your HARD DRIVE.
You may have FAT32 file system which OLDER computers with XP use or a custom built PC with XP would have. ... you do have xp right?
2) "tries to reinstall windows" what is does the computer screen say EXACTLY, if you need to get to the point where it goes TOO fast for you to read messages, a VIDEO CAMERA or VIDEO capable phone / camera will work wonders. (love the old tech)
3 & 4 & 5 can be resolved once 1 and 2 are straightened out.
love that fact that you state cd/dvd does work like you know what possible solutions there are. having fun yet?

Wow... where to begin....

(Problem 1) Okay, this has been a persistent problem. Mostly when Im playing a game, it happens... the physical memory dump blue screen. Now, in the past Ive gotten that its a RAM problem. 4 sticks of RAM later, I think I can tell you that it is not.

(Problem 2) Other random symptoms. Just before the Windows XP screen when starting up, sometimes I get a black screen with a blinking cursor at the top left that it will sit at.. forever. If I wait 10 minutes with the power off, I can reboot fine. While the cursor is blinking, I can ctrl+alt+del and it will restart but do the same thing. (Problem 3) Another fun sympton... task manager doesnt respond when I use it. I need to hold in ctrl alt del, then find the process and end it. Not too annoying except that it opens about 100 task managers that I have to close afterwards, and my CPU% is at 100, so everything loads mega slow. (The task manager problem has since been solved, but medical history is important too sometimes)

(Problem 4) Now it seems to momentarily freeze for a second or two before finally catching up with itself. This happens on simple tasks, for instance, like typing on Word. At first, I just shrugged it off as a momentary nuisance, but then I received this:
(Problem 5) Delayed Write Failed
c:\windows\sys32\wbem\repository\fs\mapping2.map
Data lost... maybe hardware problems or network problem.

I've been using nero 7 for a long time now and I never had any problems with it. This happened before. When I insert a blank dvd-r it reads it but when the transcoding is done and starts burning. This error occurs. People suggested that it was probably the cheap blank dvds I'm using. I had no choice but to use those blanks but I don't use them all the time. I kind of figured that too but the same things happening again. The last time I fixed it was replacing the internal dvd drive. So, what I'm wondering is "is it the computer that's causing these problems or is it really the blank dvds??". Anyways I don't know if I'm posting in the right area of the forum. I also don't know if I'm allowed to post this thing that I am about to post. But anyways can you try and help me out? Look at the nero error log and see if there's something wrong in there for I don't know what it means.

We have a two year old Toshiba laptop, my son tried to clean the screen and cracked it. I have about 2 inches that I can see.

I want to connect it to an external monitor, when I hook it up, I can only see on the external screen until it boots up and then it clicks over to the lap top.

how can I fix this?

For all I know, this is a really dumb question but it struck me as odd and I haven't been able to resolve the problem.

I have been using a dialup connection (56k modem) to access the internet from my home while I wait for the cable to become available in my area. A few days ago, I was having a problem connecting to my ISP and figured it might be my modem because I have had no connectivity problems whatsoever in the past. So I reinstalled my modem from the device manager. Not the drivers, just the hardware device. I then clicked on my dialup shortcut to connect to my ISP. The connection was successful, but no connection icon appeared in my system tray. When I click on the dialup shortcut while online, no connection status window appears, just the same username/password prompt box. On top of that, the only thing I have listed in Network Connections now is my LAN connection (inactive). I tried creating new connections with different names, and I was able to connect to my ISP with these as well, but the same exact problem occurred again. No connection icon in the system tray, no status window, no listing in Network Connections. Although when I try to create a new connection using the same name, it tells me a connection with that name already exists.

Although this problem presents no real practical difficulties (I am still able to connect to my ISP and access the internet), the fact that things just aren't working right is interesting and irritating too. Any ideas on ... Read more

I have trawled the internet and forums for weeks looking for the answer to this question and I have found no solution to date. I will try to give as much information as possible.
The tasks and recent items on my Jumplist menus have stopped working on the taskbar, all except for explorer. Right-clicking on a pinned icon brings up the jump lists and they are filled with the correct recently used items and tasks, however left clicking on anything in the Jump list other than "Pin to taskbar" and "close all windows" simply closes the Jumplist and has no effect whatsoever.
I have tried numerous steps to resolve this issue, all to no avail. On other posts it has been recommended to try a clean boot. This I did, jump list functionality did not return. I also tried running in safe mood, they still don't work. Running sfc /scannow in an elevated command prompt returns that no files are corrupted.
Other posts suggest that atitray tools and the "Copy Path" Shell extension affect the functionality however I have neither of these programs installed. They also suggest that there are numerous programs that remove the funtionality, including WinRAR. I DO have winrar installed, however I tried removing it, rebooting, and the jumplists still do not work. I have since reinstalled it.
No one seems to have compiled a list of programs which affect the jump lists. I have 77 installed programs, most of which I use on a day to day basis, so uninstalling and reinstal... Read more

Hi peterjones90,

Try the following suggestions and see if the issue can be resolved:

1.     Download ShellExView v1.41 from the following link http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.zip

3.     Click Next, input "C:\ShellExView" (without the quotation marks) in the "Files will be extracted to this directory" textbox.
4.     Click Next and click Finnish.
5.     Open the "C:\ShellExView" folder and double-click the "shexview.exe" file. It will scan the registry for all the shell extensions.
6.     Select all the non-Microsoft extensions in pink by press "Ctrl" in the keyboard.
7.     Click the "Disable Selected Items" on the toolbar and click Yes.
8.     Restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved.

If the issue persists, you can restore the jump list by the steps below.

Dear friends:

I have been asked (being professionally a Russian translator and having some experience with computers and MSOffice) to create a mailing list for a Russian-oriented organization called Moscow Nights, Inc. here in the New Orleans area. I need to mail out email invitations to an event scheduled for next month.

I've tried to do so using Outlook (File, Import), by importing the original Excel database of nearly 2,000 entries. However, I immediately ran into trouble with the following error message. Please see screenshot:

http://www.websher.net/Outlook-error.jpg

If you wish to contact me privately, please write to my alternate address at:

[email protected]

To allay any fears that this has anything to do with spam, I'll be happy to send you a digital copy of the wonderful invitation card created for this special concert. We need to send the invitation in the form of an email attachment.

Thank you.

Benjamin

A:Outlook mailing list -- Problems

Benjamin:

My suggestion is to delete those contacts.
Do a mail merge to the Excel data source from Word.
When you run the merge, instead of choosing New Document, choose electronic mail (or whatever the option is for mail). It'll ask you which field in your data source contains the email addy.

I am unable to read the error message you're getting and too darn lazy to download it right now. Sorry.

1. Boot up takes an hour and a half to be entirely complete.
2. The taskbar initially doesn't show; I have to reset its properties through the control panel, then log off, then log on. This I do about 15 minutes after reboot.
3. The services that are supposed to load automatically don't; I have to launch about 25 services manually, and I can't do this for the first hour and a half after rebooting.
4. Microsoft backup doesn't work. I downloaded and tried to run Cobian 9, but it says it is already running and therefore won't run.
5. Programs take minutes to launch off the taskbar. However, programs in the task manager launch quickly, and Microsoft Outlook runs quite well, as does Google Chrome. But all launches not already on the task manager take minutes to start.
6. I can't uninstall or reinstall TurboTax 2008.
7. I have AVG, Defender, and HiJackThis, and can supply a Hijack report on request.

Ok, this virus has been causing havoc for me for around a month. Last month it had a problem with Google/Bing redirecting me somewhere instead of my intended search. I ran Malwarebytes, and one other scan that I cannot remember the name of unfortunately (want to say it started with a 'd'). It seemed to work.. but the computer started to act a little funny, so I restored it to a previous time. From there it seemed fine for about a week. However, after a week when starting my computer it would not start. The screen turned black and it said new hardware was causing it to fail starting, and it said put in my windows 7 disk. I don't have a disk so I clicked the option repair computer and it failed. So I shut it off and removed the usb storage device and tried to start it again. This time it started up. I later scanned the flash drive with malwarebytes and found nothing. I opened the internet and found that it had begun to lag horribly. When scrolling it will stop certain places for a few seconds then jump down. Also, when I click things the computer freezes then tries to load it. I ran malwarebytes and now a norton scan. It found some things and I restarted my computer. As I restarted it went bsod, but restarted anyway. I chose start windows normally and the problem is still there with the lag and such. It said windows had an unexpected shutdown, though I was just restarting it. Firefox becomes unresponsive very quickly as well as ma... Read more

I was asked to look at a friend?s laptop because boot terminated in BSOD ?Unmountable boot volume 0x00..0ED. Before reaching that point it asked one to press Enter to load SPTD. The BSOD followed regardless of pressing Enter, Escape or doing nothing.

Ok, here i go.

I have installed the game (from a disc) and it loaded up normally. The game began with a slighty stuttery intro and as the game begins i noticed that the characters were completely black, no shadying or contrast, just black! also any useable objects were too.

I scoured the internet for answers and came up with a few. My computer is pretty new and has great specs. Easily good enough to deal with the specs of the game. However i noticed that quite a few people have had the same problem as i. And it seems it stems from the fact that the game cannot be played properly by a multiple core computer (mine has four i think).

Firstly recommended was a patch which i have downloaded and has made no impact whatsoever. next was a action that seemed to cure the problem for a few people - use the task manager/set affinity to change the amount of cores/cpu's being used to one. When i did this i did notice that the game ran perfectly (speed/background colour) however the main problem (black charcters/items) remain.

As a self trained and very flawed (lol) computer tinkerer i have tried a few little things that have helped in game problems in the past (changing the compatibility to windows 95 etc etc) but alas no victory.

This game is one that ive owned for a while but my old PC couldnt run it, and now ive finally splashed on a decent PC i STILL cannot play it!

Any help or ideas would be gladly recieved.

I am running Xp Professional I have a USR V.92 Performance Pro Modem.

Sometimes when i try to connect it sounds like there already is a connection on the Line. This does not happen all the time but alot of the times.

Usually if I try to go to a site (no specific site) and I get disconnected this is when it usually happens, as I'm trying to reconnect. ive tried three different modems. Each does the same thing. Could some thing on my computor connect me with out me knowing?

I've ran spybot and got rid of as musch soyware as it found.
This actually started before I upgraded to XP.. I had win 98. And I installed XP over Win 98.
Could the remote computor not hang up?

usually after I don't try to connected for a while 30min - 1 hr then I can connect.

When I get a good connection its 50.6k

The phone company checked my line and it was good.

thanks....

I am trying to set up a 1.1GHz Duron with Win 98 to send and receive faxes. The machine was new 1 month ago with an Intel modem and fax talk (no ISA slot). It would send faxes every now and then - maybe 1 in 10 but never receive a fax. I uninstalled the rather nfriendly fax talk and installed Bitware but no joy.

I have just put in another modem (also PCI) using the conexant driver and Supervoice. Same result. I have had success once when the phone and fax are on the same line and the phone is picked up and manually switched to the fax.

On dedicated fax lines, the phone will ring and ring but not seem to cut into the fax. On one or two occasions it has cut to the fax and even got as far as handshaking but not made the final connection to send the fax.

Both modems have no trouble connecting to the internet.

I am close to losing what little hair I have left...

You need to create a dialup connector.
Go To : start/settings/control panel /dialup networking & make new connection... after yoiu have created the new connection make a shortcut & send it to the desktop so you can click on it to go online.

when i go into device manager/modems and click on it my modem shows there, when i double click the modem i get this erro "cannot read port name from registry" i click ok and then the properties for the modem comes up and says this device is working properly,i even updated the driver from that screen but still not working.
i posted this question in the internet misc section and i got the response to go into the bios and delete com 2 then windows should assign a port to my modem,i checked all through the bios and could not find anything that related to ports or modems so i didnt change anything.
i tried reinstalling windows over my existing copy still did not work.

Can you get online with it plugged in?

Have you looked in the Device Manager to see if there are any error or warnings for the modem?

If you click on the + next to the modem the tree will expand to show the modem, double click on the modem and look at the Device status and see if it indicates that this device is working properly.

What is the make and model of you modem, I don't think that I've ever seen on that didn't have line in and line out.

My modem has lost it, and I was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem.
I have a USR/3Com 56k internal PCI modem. It's called a 'performance pro' or something like that and it's a real modem not a winmodem. It is several months old and was working fine but something has gone wrong. When trying to dial out I go thu the dialer app and it initializes the modem and opens the speaker. Instead of hearing a clear dial-tone before it starts dialing, the sound is full of crackling noises and also includes some sounds I would describe as 'whooping' sounds that rise in tone. Even if it succeeds at dialing out it will not connect at this point.
Let me point out that I have a phone on the same line and if I listen on the phone the dail-tone sounds clear and normal. In fact the phone is plugged into the 2nd jack on the modem card so it's getting the exact same connection.
It was starting to get this only on occasion and doing a shut-down - restart would cure it. Now it doesn't cure it anymore. I think something died in the modem but was wondering if anybody has had this.

hi, yesterday i went and bought a cordless keyboard & mouse. after (unsucessfully) trying to install them (my computer did not have usb connections) the comp now will not recognise the external modem, i reinstalled an internal modem that i know works but again both windows and aol software will not detect a modem. they will only detect a TCP/IP connection device and wont let me go any further. I have now installed a usb pci card and the keyboard & mouse now work but still will not detect a modem? the only thing i can think i may have done is broken the serial port card (is this possible?)
any help would be most welcome. thanks. imustbeanidiot!

ps.windows tells me that i only have com1 and com 2 (no com3,4,5etc) does this matter?

A:Modem Problems

Hi imustbeanidiot, welcome to TSG....

More than likely your USB device stole the IRQ that the modem was using.

I'm going to assume you are running windows 98, if so, do this:

Start button, run, then type msinfo32 and hit ok....go to hardware resources, IRQs, edit, select all, edit, copy, and come back and paste your listing.
