Downloaded SP2 now PC is freezing

Q: Downloaded SP2 now PC is freezing

I'm tearing my hair out!

It's an intermittent problem and I have not yet seen a pattern.

I can work for 30 mins with no problem then phhht, the only way out is to hit the restart button on the case. Sometimes it's only minutes and then phhht.
All unsaved info is lost.

As an example I was replying to a post in this forum and it froze 4 times in the process.

After I have hit the restart button, most times it reboots normally but sometimes it says windows was unable to open and offers the safe mode.

There must be a conflict of some sort, has any body else had this problem?

Help me please before I lose the will to live!!!!

TGHC

A: Downloaded SP2 now PC is freezing

check it in safe mode
check the event log and see what is listed as a problem, you probably have some software that needs updating, have a check through this list ms put out

Hello Marym, I had the same problem with google Chorme as well, when I launched google it took a long time to load. Here is what I did to solve my issue.

1.) Go to the top left hand corner and click on Customize and Control Google Chorme
2.) Select Settings
3.)Click Show Advanced Settings
4.) On Network click Change Proxy Settings
5.) Next click the LAN settings option
6.) Uncheck Automatically detect Settings
7.) Restart your browser
8.)Enjoy!

Hi all,

Have been having some frustrating issues with my system recently. It all started when my system started freezing with strange patterns showing up on the monitor. I thought it must have been my video card and took it back to the computer shop to test it. They agreed the video card was faulty and sent it off for warranty. In the mean time I purchased a new low-end card and the system worked fine for about a week.

I then started to get the same issues again. I returned the system again and was told there was nothing wrong with this card. They spun some crap about the card not being powerful enough to run photoshop (which is where I spend most of my time) and convinced me to upgrade to a higher-end card, which I did.

Unfortunately, this didn't fix the problem and I continued to have problems. I returned the system yet again for a week or so. They tested it (with their HD and fresh install of vista) and said they didnt have any problems.

I picked the system up and used it without problems for around a week or so when the problems started to occur yet again. At the moment the system is freezing, freezing with a strange pattern on the screen (see attached jpgs) (looping audio), restarting, blue-screening (ecache.sys, IRQL not less or equal to, etc). It freezes during vista loading but sometimes makes it to the main OS environment.

I've tried reinstalling vista on a different drive and get exactly the same problems. It freezes and restarts during vista setup so... Read more

I recently built my first PC three days ago...
Specs:
i7 bloomfield 960 processor
4x4 vengeance ram
crosair hx850 PSU
evga x58 ftw3 mobo
hd 6870 radeon graphics xfx

When I first installed windows it started to work just fine but I soon noticed that it would randomly freeze every 15-30 minutes of use, but not on a particular program or anything. I assumed it was drivers so I installed the latest drivers for my GPU and MOBO and keyboard. It seemed fine again until it started crashing again. I ran a GPU burn test and a CPU burn test it passed both... (I tried runing memtest86+ but it froze at like 12%) Then I tried fixing the registry so I downloaded ccleaner and fixed the registry problems. Freezes continued. I finally decided to re install windows so I did and the problems still continued. I am at a loss of what to do and can't think of anything else.

any advice would be appreciated if not I will bring to a repair shop and have them sort it out.

Hello Skytri and welcome to Seven Forums. My usual disclaimer: I'm not at expert at anything.

I'm wondering if there isn't a RAM problem. Perhaps one of the sticks wasn't seated properly, etc. You could open Resource Monitor > Memory tab and make sure all RAM is being recognized. Make sure Installed = 16384MB and the Available + Cached + Hardware Reserved is the same amount. (You are using 16GB total, correct?)

Resource Monitor

If Memtest freezes you could try a quick check for a bad RAM module. Install one stick in Slot # 1 (or whichever slot the mobo manual says to use.) Run the computer to test for freezes. Test each of the remaining sticks one at a time. If all 4 sticks work you might want to go through these troubleshooting guides. They are time consuming but many people have been able to isolate their computer problems.

Hi there!
I have a usb soundcard which worked perfectly a while ago, but since some time this strange bug is causing trouble. Sound suddenly stops, and the VU meter in control panel stays at the same position - as if the sampling point of audio is stuck. Problem is
temporarily solved by disabling then re-enabling the soundcard.
I tried looking in the logbooks for relating events but I can't find any event which may cause this, as there is nothing happening at the same time as an audio freeze - or there must be a big delay of writing events to logbook.
I don't know what kind of data you need to help me solve this, but I'm happy to supply it!

Thanks in advance :)

Hello - I could do with some advice, I think.

Some basics first:

Dell Inspiron 1525 with 3GB RAM, running Vista

Recently I've had problems where my laptop has frozen during normal operation - nothing fancy, just surfing etc. It sometimes doesn't shut down properly either.

I have been using the radialpoint safecare software that Virgin Media supply in the UK as part of their broadband package. For a few months now the anti spy and anti virus s/w have failed to load, so I have relied on MSE. As I say, some problems have started to appear.

MSE told me that on 15/11/2010 i had a trojandownloader which was removed.

Some pals advised I would be better trying Malwarebytes or Avast. I tried the former and on scanning it stuck while looking at wklnhst.dat (something to do wth MS Works I think). I had to power off and on. It did a chkdsk which came up with a number of actions that looked like it was trying to fix something (sorry). I rand MBAM again and it got further then froze while looking at msvcr80.dll.

Power off/on again.

OK, then I tried avast, which seemed to get about 38% through then froze.
Power off/on again.

SOmeone suggested rkill would kill any trojan processes that might be causing a problem - t did knock off a couple of things (one by sun and another by ms). Malwarebytes again - crashed as before.

Struggling now!

Welcome any advice at all.

Cheers
Steve

A:Vista not closing properly/freezing - Malwarebytes/Avast freezing

Can you try running MBAM in Safe Mode?

You can get to safe mode via hitting F8 just after the BIOS Post screen/Dell Splash Logo.

Hello,

I'm going to post two different scenarios that happens when my computer needs a hard restart
My computer freezes completely (literally no movement on the screen or anything, it's not slow it's frozen). And an extremely loud buzzing sound comes out of my headphones or speakers. The same thing as above except without the loud buzzing noise.

I saw that this happened to someone else who had both the speakers and the headphones plugged in at the same time. However, scenario #2 just happened to me 10 minutes ago even though I only had my headphones plugged in.

I built this computer six months ago and it's the first computer I've ever built. I assume it's a driver issue but I can't really pinpoint the problem since no BSOD appears on the screen and I have no higher computer knowledge.

I'm attaching the zip file required.

Thanks,

A:Random Computer Freezing - Need to hard restart after freezing No BSOD

Wow, this sounds like the same thing that happened to a friend of mine when his hard drive was failing. Replaced the drive and the freezes went away. Even the buzzing noise.

Also you may need to look at what drivers you may have just install/updated.

Hoping you don't have any failing hardware "Motherboard, video card, etc". Those are expensive

Hello,
I'm hoping for a bit of help and advice on this issue before I go taking anything apart or delving into the insides of my laptop or taking it to a repair shop.
When I turn the laptop on I get the Acer screen and then the top left quarter of the screen goes black and the whole thing freezes (see the attachment). However when I plug the laptop into my TV screen via HDMI it's absolutely fine and starts up no problem. Even when I take the cable out once it has started up it works fine on just the laptop screen but it's something about the start-up that makes it freeze. I also shut it down, unplugged the HDMI and started it up again on just the laptop and it worked fine again so really confused about what is going on.
Has anyone come across something like this before? I've attached my computer specs below too.
Thanks

I have 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium on an HP Compaq CQ5210f. More system details at the bottom. This problem happened twice in mid April, and now twice again in early May, both within days of each other.

The only thing that remains consistent is that I'm playing a 3D game with audio on, the winamp program. Completely different games each and every time, though, some far more gentle on the video card than others. The screen would freeze up and so would the audio, and my keyboard/mouse don't respond at all. I resort to doing a hard reset with the computer power button.

Each time, when I log in again, explorer.exe is frozen. the taskbar appears, but nothing on the desktop, and after a couple seconds it all freezes up, with the busy mouse symbol when I highlight taskbar. I can still move mouse around though.

I can do ctrl+alt+delete at this point at least. Restarting explorer.exe doesn't work, so I try logging out in that menu, which does work, although slowly.

I've tried scanning for virus and also a system restore to earlier point, no difference.

The only solution so far has been to simply log in safe mode - which DOES work by the way - and create a new account from scratch.

Last time I cut/paste almost everything between old account and new, this time I will only do basics like save games and documents/music/video.

Can anyone please explain or help me understand why this is happening? I'd hate to have to keep restarting a new account... Read more

Issue: Computer started freezing after a complete factory recovery.

Gateway GT5405E Refurbished
2.8 GHz Intel Pentium D Processor 820
2 Gigs of Ram
Vista Home Premium 32bit

Ok so the computer started freezing after a factory recovery I had Dualboot of Vista HP 32bit and Ubuntu 10.04. Well I decided I didn't want Ubuntu 10.04 on my computer anymore so I went to Google and downloaded EasyBCD to rewrite the bootloader. After the rewrite I restarted the computer let the computer load up restarted the computer and put in the recovery disc. I did a Factory Recovery as I said. Well after that I noticed I don't see Gateway Splash screen where it says hit F1 F2 or whatever to enter setup. Didn't really pay any attention to that so I'm on my computer after the recovery and went away to do something. I came back to my computer after how ever long and noticed the computer was frozen. Well at least the keyboard of mouse would not work.

Keyboard is PS/2
Mouse is USB

(I knew keyboard wasn't working because when I pressed num lock the light just stayed on)

So after a hard restart in which HDD check didn't come up but it did give the windows didn't shutdown correct screen and gave a choice between normal or safe mode. Anyway I did some looking 3 days straight found out turn off screen saver and screen turning off in power settings. So I did well the problem seemed to go away. Or at least it seemed like it did. A:Freezing, White Screen, Idles Causing Freezing

I don't think this is a blue screen of death problem, but hey it sucks to have a broken computer. Defragment the computer. load any CDs that came with your hardware. Did u update everything? (drivers and anything else that can be updated, just for updating sake). And just to be thorough, did u install any other software before it started freezing? Make sure your hard drive is not completely full. Test the memory by running Windows Memory Diagnostic just by typing it into search. I've read where it was recommended to turn off any IM service as it lowers security and slows down the system. As well, make sure you don't have a lot of things running at once, and make sure you don't have too many items running at startup. Windows defender > tools > startup programs (do this before installing new anti-virus protection, as that turns defender off. If u need to, temporarily turn defender back on just to list the startup programs), and see if too many programs are loading early and if you even want them to load at all. too many currently running and startup programs can slow down your system.

Check if you have a virus. If you don't have an anti-virus, recommend Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes. Check and make sure device manager does not list any non-updated drivers. If your computer cannot handle some aspects of vista like its theme, high display settings, and windows features that take up a lot of resources, turn as much as you can off so that they do not slow yo... A:Computer Freezing; Slowing Down. But mostly freezing. I have my HiJackThis! Log File.

I don't see anything in your log or your description of your problem to come to the conclusion that your problem is malware related. When there is malware present there will always be other internet related symptoms like popups or a browser hijack etc...

I will advise you to uninstall Microsoft Anti-Spyware as the version you have is very old and no longer supported. It in now called Windows Defender.

Here are some routine maintenance practices that you should do on a regular basis to keep your machine running efficiently. Go through this now and see if it helps:

Disk Cleanup:

http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_cleanup_utility.htm

Defrag your HD:

http://artsweb.bham.ac.uk/artsit/Info/Guides/GoodPractice/defrag-win2kxp.htm

Run chkdsk:

To use Chkdsk, click Start and My Computer. Right-click the hard drive you want to check, and click Properties. Select the Tools tab and click Check Now. Check both boxes. Click Start. You'll get a message that the computer must be rebooted to run a complete check. Click Yes and reboot. Chkdsk will take awhile, so run it when you don't need to use the computer for something else.

Remove unnecessary startups

This should be done through the System Configuration Utility. Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig.
Click OK or hit the Enter key.

Click on the "Startup" tab and remove the check by the items that you have determined are unnecessary. Click "Apply" then "Close"

You will be prompted to ... Read more

Hello, I'm having an issue with my computer.

My computer has started to restart/freeze up on me. The thing is, it has graphical issues once it freezes/tries to reboot. I get all these lines through the screen, graphical glitches when trying to go through the BIOS, etc. The computer isn't too slow, it isn't acting strange, the only thing that is wrong is the obvious freezing/restarting with graphical lines and glitches once it freezes.

My video card has been going out for a long time(I share a computer with a few people and they seem to think the video card is ok, but I have always seen small glitches in graphics here and there), so I am thinking maybe this might be a problem, given the graphical glitches, the horizontal lines going through the screen once it freezes.

When it hits the BIOS, it sometimes shows these same lines with the screen going mostly black.

System specs are:

CPU - Core 2 Duo, speed I don't remember.

Video Card - Geforce 7900 GT 512mb

Ram - 2GB DDR2

Motherboard - Asus, P5N-E SLI

I got this computer a few years back and I am not one to keep updated with specs or talk about them often, so I have forgotten the speed of the CPU and I do not know if I am missing information for you guys.

Solutions I have tried:

Overheating - I used air to filter out all dust/dirt that might be there to harm the computer, I have plenty of fans in there, etc.

Any and all help will be appreciated, Thank you.

A:Solved: Computer Freezing/freezing/graphical glitchs

If you're getting graphical 'glitches' while in bios, that's usually a good sign that your graphics card is having issues - however, I have seen this happen with faulty ram. I'd recommend reseating the cards (ensure your computer is off and unplugged whilst doing so) and see if that helps

Hi all,

This is my first post and I am so thankful I found this forum!
My laptop, in the past 2-3 days, has been freezing up. I have not downloaded anything in that timeframe.
At first it was when there was no activity for a while and the screen would just go black and I would have to manually restart the pc. Now, the freezing is more regular.and it freezes without going black but still I have to manually restart. I have F-Secure virus, updated, and during a full scan it freezes. I downloaded Malwarebytes and it also freezes in full scan.
I believe they are both freezing in the same spot: c:windows/winsxs/x86_security-malware-windows-defender...
I tried to target scan just that area and it freezes.

I did a quick scan with Malwarebytes and this is what it found:

Ok my friend's computer is exhibiting the symptoms as I've described in the title.

Basically it's freezing whenever you seem to be doing anything thats a little bit more system intensive than just sitting idle. Opening webpages, viewing video in full screen etc.

You restart it and it's like frozen with just the blue desktop and an egg timer on the screen.

I think this is obviously a heat issue because if you leave it a while after it's frozen and then start it up it's back to normal.

Thing is I've only jsut been able to start taking a look at it and he's been using it all the while and I think it's at a point now where some damage has been done as he says it's basically unusable now (after telling him to leave it well alone until I can look at it)

CPU is overheating...?

Graphics wouldn't cause this much of a hoo haa would it? He does have a spare card that I can fit to see if it helps....

I'm getting some compressed air in the post soon so I'll give everything a blast (seemed to help before) but do you think it's worth taking the heatsink and fan off and reapplying thermal paste etc?

Am I totally off base here? - is it possibly nothing to do with heat?

Thanks in advance guys!

A:Freezing when doing anything and then freezing on startup when reset getting worse..

It does sound like a heat issue and a malfunctioning/overheating graphics card can certainly cause these issues.

Are the issues still occuring?

After having the pc for about a week it asked me if i wanted to upgrade to windows 10 for free, which i proceeded to do with no issues and it ran fine.

However, I went to shut my pc down and it only gave me the option to shut down and update, which was fine by me. It updated and the next two days my pc froze while i was on it, forcing me to turn it off via the power. But after it did that it would just turn on normally.

Now it has gotten to the stage where it freezes whenever it tries to start up windows and won't even boot up properly. It gets past the asus screen and begins loading windows and freezes. The longer i leave my computer the longer it gives me before it freezes once i turn it on. Every second boot failure it attempts to repair itself but even freezes when doing that. I know its the issue with windows as i can enter the bios settings when the asus logo comes up and I can edit the computer settings from there, just not the operating system. I've tried to boot via the installation disk but it even freezes then, which i think it may be because I have windows 10 and its a windows 8.1 disk, not sure. I've gotten to the stage in the repair where it has given me troubleshoot options but i need to be fast to click the right options. I think i saw an option to revert to an older version but ins... I ran malware bytes, no viruses. Viruses are out of the picture, this exact problem was had like a few weeks ago, and Bestbuy took it in, and the ram apparently was broken, so they fixed it and gave me it back. Now the same problem is occuring. after I hit desktop, a few minutes later, my PC freezes. Like sound just keeps going, like in music, but the video freezes, mouse freezes, and any or all action ceases. I have to hit boot button on my case. Please help me. It wasn't doing this earlier, but now it started up badly.

A:PC was freezing, replaced RAM, fixed, now freezing again..

Is it still under warranty? If so I would take it back to Best Buy, Where you had it fixed before.

I don't know what else to say other than my computer has been freezing and firefox has been freezing lately. I called the manufacturer and he said to restore windows to factory settings, so I did that. Things were great for a week or so, but recently my computer has begun freezing again. It happens pretty frequently. Firefox will also freeze when trying to get it to do very little work, like loading two tabs simultaneously, e.g. My AVS found a suspicious file recently and quarantined it, but still, the freezing has continued. Please advise.

And I do not think that I have a Boot CD

During the last few days..maybe a little longer, my computer has been sluggish or just plain slow! I'm having a problem with programs and IE or Firefox freezing as well. AVG was run in safe mode and there wasn't much there. Plus it didn't help the problem any. I recently reformatted and reinstalled XP on this system due to a bad virus. None of the anti-virus programs I ran afterward found any problems. Now tho, I can't run TrendMicro Housecall online. It gets to the point of saying it's opening the program and it just runs and runs with no progress. CWShredder found nothing during it's scan. As far as I can guess, it's either a virus somewhere that I havent found or some program hogging serious resources. I'd appreciate any help!

32bit will only see 4gigs of ram and usually only be able to use abt 3.3 its also a bit slower depending on how you use it. when changing from one OS format (32bit) to another (64bit) it has to be a clean install.

Now about restoring you may have a backup there and available but since you are 32 bit and it isnt you cant use it. If you were to reinstall vista 64 it probably be available

I took advantage of the student offer of Windows 7 and last night downloaded windows 7. I thought that because my laptop was 64 bit capable I could do a clean install to it from the download, which I now obviously realise was a mistake.

Does anyone know how I can change this download for a 32 bit version?

Thanks

Hello. I downloaded the new sp3 update yesterday and followed all the instructions and i was ready to restart my computer. When i did, everything went fine until after the loading screen it gave me a blue error screen. Since i needed the computer in working order, I used a pc recovery tool (pressed F10 when it started up) and did a non-destructive recovery which took about 20 minutes. Then after that was done i had to restart and do the windows first start up thing. Then i finally finished and saw that all of my custom features and files were no where to be found! All my applications and games that i downloaded are still in shape, but all of the custom features (like background, WMP playlists, Updates) were all gone. so is there any whay which i can restore my old settings? I need to have all my original settings as soon as i can please .

Thanks

Hi cloud366, it sounds like you have done a repair install. When you pressed F10, did you choose Last Known Good Configuration from the boot menu?

Also, check in C:\Documents and Settings for a duplicate profile. It could be that your original profile has corrupted and Windows built you a new one.

All those type of "custom features" live in your local profile.

A:Think I Downloaded Something, Help

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer I don't see any malware there. Some points:Do you have a bought license for Norton? Or did you get it for free? The reason I'm asking is, it's a really heavy app for an antivirus. You can install a better antivirus that's waaaay lighter and easier for the computer, and takes less ram and actually is more efficient too.So, I recommend uninstalling Symantec's products and installing AntiVir (That's the promotion license for AntiVir Premium -- 6 months for free. You can get their free edition here) or Avast! instead.Another valid point: when did you install Service Pack 3? There has been several flaws with it.. Some people have really bad problems with SP3, I seem to be one of the lucky ones with no issues. Did you notice the problems after installing it?Also have a read through THIS TOPIC.Finally.....Click Start >> Run and paste in:"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daftClick OK.Click OK to the prompt from Deckard's System Scanner.Click Scan.Checkmark every entry found.Click Fix.Let me know how you get on.

I was working trying to fix my DVDFab express tonight, and I was using a keygenerator... bad I know... but anyways, I ended up downloading and installing something that made my desktop wallpaper go to white and flicker... THe program initiated a msdos looking window with an error message that asked me if I wanted to abort... I couldn't choose anything and had to reboot... that's when I found it had erased my wallpaper and I couldn't get it fixed.. i knew it was some kind of malicious program...

so i came to you guys and I have followed all your steps... My wallpaper is back and I think I have gotten rid of most stuf, but my computer is still running kind of weird, slow, just not the same....

I have ran Adaware SE Personal, Spybot, Notron Anti-Virus, Kapersky Online Scanner, CWShredder, and Spyware Blaster... Please see if something else is on there...

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'.
8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/ to update manually.

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

system running : windows XP professional with sp3

okay, as the title implies, while surfing the internet a tab appeared in the firefox window that said "Updating..." but never showed/displayed anything. After that, I noticed the windows start/tool bar had changed from the XP theme version to the classic version. Then i noticed that there was no network connectivity. When I tried to look up what was wrong, the properties, rename, and delete options have been disabled from the right-click menu.
I received a message that there was attempt to update registry but whatever was done was restored, then my PC reboot.
what I've done so far:
I tried to boot using the windows xp CD but nothing happens. Windows eventually boots up, but I don't get any options to run repair or anything.
Used CA anti-virus for scan and found nothing (did this again in safe mode and still found nothing)
I did a search to see if I could find what was modified, it shows that all user accounts including a Helpassist?? account have been updated in some form or fashion so i don't know what else to do

I see svchost.exe, services.exe, and system taking up 50% of CPU occasionally but not sure what to make of that.

to get the internet started I tried to turn on some network services but all failed due to 'timeout'

Please let me know any ideas, or how to get started on trying to fix this problem.

thanks,

A:Downloaded something bad help please

Clear these three items in HJT and rescan:

If they are still present, then download MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and while you are there grab the RogueRemoverFree as well. FileASSASSIN is under More Tools in Anti-Malware, and can actually delete the files while in use. Run that if the files wont delete or keep showing up in HJT. Make sure you update MalwareBytes before you do a full scan

I have setup every application to "ask me before checking for updates",

Even when I am not using any brower, email or any opther application, I notice that my lights on my modem are blinking quite fast... that is something is being downloded. It has been going on for quite sometime.

How do I find out what is being downloded (or uploaded)?

I use
toshiba laptop
window 7 prof
IE9
MS office 2010
Internet secuirity (antivirus, etc ...) from Bell
Thank you very much

A:How do I know what is being downloaded?

And you have no browser open? And check for new email only infrequently?

You could try disconnecting from the modem and see if any program complains.

In Network Connections right click on your connection and select Status. Watch the Bytes sent and received to get an idea of the upload vs download and how much.

I downloaded a program yesterday and ran it but nothing happened. Then I read comments on a video of it and someone said it was most likely a RAT and another guy saying it was probably a virus. I can provide the file if that will help. I don't want a RAT.

Last nite something tried downloading to my system. I THOUGHT I denied it permission, but immediately A squared IDE started popping alerts whenever I opened any browsers or Outlook Express. (Since I thought I had denied it access to download, I didnt really pay attention to the warning).

So far nothing has tried accessing the internet (i.e., no Zone Alarm requests) but I do assume something "wrong" is here. Here is my Hijackthis log:

I was surfing the web and I came to a website and Windows made the noise that indicates that a download is complete and I suspect the website downloaded a virus to my computer. I ran all my anti-viruses and spyware programs and it cant find anything. I am wondering if there is some sort of thing on XP that logs all your downloads, because that would help a lot. Or maybe Im a bit paranoid?

A:Downloaded spyware?? not sure

Hi, I don't know of a specific feature like that, but you could wade through the Temporary Internet Files folder for whatever account you were using at the time...sounds easier than it is, thousands of files in there...so, since none of the scans found anything, why not just post a Hijackthis log to check?

Hijackthis does not show all malware, but it's the place to start.

Save Hijackthis.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log. DO NOT fix any items at this time!
You must have ALL browser windows CLOSED when you "fix" items with Hijackthis..
we will help you later to do that. Most of what HJT shows IS NEEDED!
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All, then click Edit and then click Copy, doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....

Alright, so, firstly, I know nothing about computers, but I was on MSN messenger, and got one of those infected "hey, is this you" followed by some sort of link messages, and stupid me, I clicked and accepted. I've been reading forums, but I don't get what to do, I've done some research, and I'm thinking it's a trojan thingy, and a leap virus, because once I downloaded it, I automatically sent it to everyone on my contact list, and an hour later, my computer automatically restarted. So for days now, I've been trying to fix it, and I think I know the file it's in, or at least close (C:/system32 hosts, or smss), the problem is, the Hijackthis scan, skips that folder, probably because the thing controls my computer, and, If I try delete related files, it says that I need permission to do so, yet I'm on the administrative account, so I guess if anyone know's what ever is going on, that would be awesome. Here's my Hijackthis log:

Still trying to resolve issues with IE8. Looking at downloaded controls I see three instances of Java Plug-in. All installed at the same time when I installed the latest version of Java.

Is this normal? If I remove one (and then two) will it remove all of them? Should I just disable two?

Then looking at "run without permissions" I see even more instances of Java Plug-n.

I do want to keep Java Plug-in but wonder why I have so many of the same?

A:Three of the same downloaded control add-on

Those three seam to be the same. If it was my computer I would remove all Java and get a fresh download of Java. I think this might answer all your questions.

Hello

I downloaded a program that was marked safe by Norton. However it downloaded some malware with it and changed my home page to delta search, as well as blank tabs to delta search. The computer program processing and internet speed has slowed down so I suspect more programs (malware/viruses) have been downloaded. Also, five programs were downloaded - Browser Protect, Delta Chrome Toolbar, Delta Toolbar, Gorilla Price, Yontoo 2.51. Additionally a window that won't go away keeps coming up with "BrowserProtect.exe has stopped working". Finally, the above five programs are running processes - when closed in Task Manager (windows vista) they come back - hence I think they are malware.

I was cautious about just deleting the programs installed listed above as I've had damage done to my computer previously when this happened about a year ago. Additionally I don't know how to stop the message above reappearing. Also, as mentioned, I think I have additionally (undetected) malware downloaded.

I've run a Norton Scan but it has only detected tracking cookies and deleted these. Nothing else is detected, and the latest virus etc. definitions were downloaded prior to starting the scan.

I've added the logs requested in the "read this before posting" file as attachments as the previous post I attempted was deemed too long (i.e. over 300000 characters". Sorry - I hope this is ok, otherwise I can re-post them individually.

I recently installed Real Player. Since then, when downloading a .mp3 file in Internet Explorer, once the File Download box pops up, the filename is changed to .mpga format. If I just highlight the download link, the file will be named as .mp3. Also, I uninstalled Real Player, and this doesn't seem to have fixed the problem. Any ideas? I don't want to have to keep renaming or converting files every time I download an mp3.. I'm really looking for a solution to the entire problem so that they'll download as mp3's again. Thanks in advance for all your help!

A:Downloaded mp3 to mpga in IE6

Sounds like, when you installed Real Player you did not select [Custom] and check your file associations. Or did not use the Real Player option to always reset file associations if another program changes it.

Actually, before installing any ADDITIONAL player, you should check what files are associated whit your current player or players, and make sure the file association of the new player are not in conflict.

I always uncheck ANY association conflict in a new player, then change them later to the player I want to be default for the file.

According to a Google hit for MPGA, = Mpeg-1 Layer3 Audio Stream and that links to Winamp. Bet you have Winamp installed and it is over-riding the file association for mpg. You need to disassociate mpg from Winamp.

I HAVE A VIRUS I CAN NOT GET RID OF FROM SOME FREE PORN SITE IN MY SETTINGS.I HAVE TO USE FIREFOX WHEN I SHOULD BE ON INTERNET EXPLORER. IT STARTS TO LOAD AND AFTER THREE BARS IN THE LOADING PROGRESS BOX. IT THEN GOES TO WHAT EVER PAGE I WAS ON PRIOR TO THAT.

A:DOWNLOADED VIRUS

The virus must have affected your CAPS LOCK key!!! Quick!! Smash the keyboard with a hammer to prevent the spread of this horrible virus Joking...

First, I would suggest you continue to use Firefox and forget about IE except for doing windows and office updates.

Second, I would say that's malware or a browser hijack, though you may have viri (viruses) in addition.

I would begin my downloading, updating, and running Spybot search & destroy, Lavasoft's AdAware, and Microsofts AntiSpyware programs. They are all free.

Do you have an anti-virus program installed? If so update it and run a complete scan. If not AVG antivirus is free and a decent performing product.

Try the above and we can go from there

Apparently the new things on forums are either Rickrolling or shortly commenting "keylogger" when someone posts a link. Atleast thats the case on the WoW forums and GameFAQs.

Well I clicked one of those links because it claimed to be a cool in-game screenshot. So I clicked the link, the whole "Blizzard is not responsible for links not supported by them" came up and I clicked to continue, then as the site was loading, I went back to the WoW forums and read some of the comments and one was a simple "Keylogger" then someone quoted the link and a conversation entailed about how you should not quote keylogger links, etc. After that, I quickly closed the site before it loaded up, it was still a blank white screen, but it was running for a good 10 seconds. Am I completely screwed over or am I just being overcautious?

So I am now afraid to log into WoW, or anything for that matter. I ran a virus scan using HouseCall (the first link that came up when I Google'd "free virus scan") and it ended up freezing my computer. So should I just blow this off? I'm afraid that if I do, I might wake up to the message "Your password has been changed" when I go to log into WoW tomorrow. Please let me know, and if it is something I should worry about, can you tell me of a good, reliable virus scan site that will get the job done quick and not take like 3 days...

And I'm sorry if I'm an idiot and this is completely dumb and its just some forum ... Read more

OK! Once again.. Greetings to people of this forum and you that is currently reading.
I have downloaded all the updates for Win 7 Ultimate 64bit.. Which I am now down to SP1. I am wondering.. Once that update is done downloading and is installed. Would that file be automatically deleted or is it still somewhere in the computer? If so it is still there.. Where is the directory of that downloaded update? *Not the directory where the update is installed*

I ask this question due to my Drive C is running low in memory
Used 34.7
Free 14.0
Capacity 48.8

A:Updates downloaded

To be technically accurate, your system's Hard Drive is running out of Free Space. This has nothing to do with the system's memory, NeroLigerzid.

SP1 will be found in a randomly named subfolder of Windows\SoftwareDistrbution\Download <--
This article states that SP1 requires slightly over 1 GB of Free Space for the x64 SP1 installation package obtained from Windows Update - Learn how to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1

Since you state you have "downloaded all the updates for Win 7 Ultimate 64bit", suggest you restart the system to first ensure that all of them have installed, then delete the contents of the Download subfolder to reclaim some space. Then use the above article for a guide to reclaiming more space, if so desired.

After SP1 has been installed for awhile and you find that there are no issues associated with it's installation, then please see this Tutorial to reclaim more Free Space -

A:cant open anything that is downloaded

Koushal,

I'm afraid that isn't very clear which is probably why you did not receive an answer. But it sounds like one of two things is possibly happening... either the file you have downloaded and are trying to open is being blocked by your anti-virus, or by your firewall. Or if by "open" you mean you are trying to install it, it could be you don't have admin rights to install, so it's a Windows UAC 'shield' you see.

To increase your chances of getting help, I would suggest taking a screenshot of the 'shield' if it sticks long enough, or of the msg you see right before the shield appears.

Hi everyone. I was wondering if someone could help me. I have had this little box on the bottom left of my computer when I first start it. It says c:\windows\odbc.hta. I think it is making my explorer crash because after about 15 minutes on the internet, I recieve a message that explorer has performed an illegal opperation and will be shut down. I end up having to restart my computer. I have run adware and spybot but they have been unable to locate it or remove it. I have also searched multiple virus webpages and didnt find anything as well. Can someone please help me and tell me how to remove this annoying thing! Thank you

A:I think that I downloaded a virus, please help me!

Please do this:

First create a permanent folder somewhere like in My Documents and name it Hijack This.

Now Click here to download Hijack This. Download it and click "Save". Save it to the Hijack This folder you just created.

Click on Hijackthis.exe to launch the peogram.

Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required. Someone here will be glad to advise you on what to fix.

Are you refering to Windows Updates?

Windows/Software Distribution/Downloads

If you delete them however, the update history log is destroyed.

Or at least that was my understanding.

Do you know what they are called? Try typing the name, or part of the name, in the box that pops up when you hit the start button, then right click on the name and click on "Open File Location"

Or you could look in "Downloads" - Type that in the box and "Open File Location", you should find them there.

I downloaded a virus about a month and 1/2 ago. As soon as I opened the program I got a bsod " irqL_not_not_less_then_or_equal_to" then my laptop turned off. I tried to reformat before I tried to get rid of the virus. It did not work I had to restore using system Image. Obvious now that was the wrong thing to do. Well It got rid of the bsod's, but now I cannot run any kind of bootdisk because it will turn off about the middle of whatever I'm running. I've tried reformatting with win7 bootdisk, spotmau's bootdisk "Partition wipe, disk wipe", killdisk, hitachi disk fitness test disk. I've also ran scanners ; AVG anti-virus, Avira antivirus(which was what I was running and also scanned the program before opening it with avira.), Gmer, Sophos anti-rootkit, kaspersky anti virus scanner, mbr check, tdss killer, etc..... hah....just about everything I could download... And found nothing. So I've still got something screwing me up but none of these programs can find it... Possibly buried it after trying to format and using sytem image. Since it wont let me do anything with the boot disks is that in Would it be coming from MBR? Any help is very appriciated.

A:Downloaded virus, and I've tried everything to get rid of it.

Hi,

That does sound MBR related. You need to try and scan prior to Windows loadup. To do that please follow these steps:

1. Download and burn the F-Secure ISO file to a CD using something like IMGBURN.
2. Turn on your PC, then enter the BIOS before it has a chance to load the Windows OS.
3. In the BIOS, make sure the CD/DVD drive is first in the boot sequence.
4. Insert the F-Secure bootable CD into the CD/DVD drive, and boot the PC.

The PC will now boot using Linux. F-Secure will then update its anti-malware database (ensure you leave your ethernet cable plugged into your router/modem). Follow the prompts to do a scan of your system - it may take quite some time.

Make a note of the malware that it finds, and post the names here as we may need to do some additional work depending on what it finds.

Note that if some critical system files are infected, F-Secure deletes them, and your system may not be bootable. In this case, you will need to do a clean Windows install, preferable after a secure wipe of the hard disk. Make sure any critical data is backed before scanning.

Regards,
Golden

I've recently downloaded a couple files. One is a game (from GOG.com), another a BIOS update (from Dell), among others. When trying to open either of the two above, I get the following error message:

"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher"

Another recently downloaded program gives me a checksum fail type of error message.

I've kept up to date with Microsoft updates, and have tried running them in various compatability modes, but get the same message each time.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated, as I am rather significantly tech illiterate. Thanks!

I bought Easy Hi Qrecorder program a few years ago. It worked fine. I had to re-download to a new computer as the other had crashed.

I use XP home edition. The Easy Hi Q recorder is reputable, from Roemer Software. I redownloaded it to the next computer which had been recently cleaned out of my son's user account and all his programs and files.

The Easy Hi Q downloads fine and installs. But when I click on the execute file to start it, I get "DWGTrueView 2010 wanting to install instead, which was part of an Autocad program my son had, for mapping. I can't seem to get rid of this mix up. Then of course it can't find the "source" file from that autocad program since it has been deleted for months. I also tried a clean disk and defragmented after deleting all my sons files.
I just want my Easy Hi Q recorder to work properly and open up.

I just tried an XP repair using the XP disk. Still no change. And it took all afternoon to do this.

so i decide to start to set up AA2 on the vista hdd as it is on xp hdd, the first thing i do is go to my maps website of choice and start to download the user created maps i like. everything looks good, i choose the correct directory and file and even hit the open folder button to make sure the map is in the right place and it is.
now the good part, i close everything up and go back to the map to make sure it will start and play correctly and it is not there, i search for it from the search window at start and search tells me the closet it could find was the same map but on the E drive, which is where the xp hdd is when i boot vista.

Howdy.

I downloaded a PSP theme a week ago and installed it on my laptop.

I've tried to delete it, however, the when I shutdown the lappy, the PSP screen pops up.

That isn't tooooo much of a problem. The real problem is when I start up the computer it asks me to "restore windows XP" and some other option (???) before it will start.

Also, I have tried to run the "error checking" tool, but since the instalation of this PSP theme, it will not run.

Help is very much appreciated.

Cheers,

A few days ago I accidently downloaded a virus. I clicked on the download button, instead of the download link. The download button was a virus, when I opened the file, it proceeded to download many unwanted programs to my computer. Some of the symptoms my computer is having are:
-File keeps popping up on my desktop named, "Continue Live Installation"
-That same file opens on its on several times while im on the computer. I Close It and do not continue with the installation
-Almost everything I click on makes ads pop up in new windows.
-Their are ads all over websites that would normally not have ads (ex. Youtube, facebook)
-Computer is generally slower
Those are my problems. Things I have done so far are:
-Immediately uninstalled unwanted programs via control panel
-Ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and got rid of anything it found

Hello everyone! So, I don't know when this problem started, but probably a few days back. The EXEs I already had on my laptop run perfectly fine, but whenever I download an EXE from the internet, it doesn't do anything. I double-click them, open the task manager, look at the program I ran, and it gets stuck to a specific amount of memory usage (Depending on how heavy the program is), and some seconds later it closes. I can't see it on the task manager. Examples are: "WinRAR Installer", "FIFA 14 (After I installed but the game won't run)", "FiveM installer (A multiplayer client for GTA V)".
I tried one thing and transfered the FiveM installer to another laptop which was new, and it worked! It was installing perfectly on that laptop. So I transfered the installed files back to my laptop, and when I ran the EXE that was installed (Along with a lot of other DLLs and related files that were installed with the program), it had the same problem. It got stuck to a certain amount of memory usage, and closed. Now I'm totally confused, I tried the fix on Microsoft's website (First Automatically, didn't work, then manually, that also didn't work). Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Greetings, Pardeep.

Try a clean startup - Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup
Try installing in Safe Mode (with or without Networking), you will need to run SafeMSI.exe first when in Safe Mode. Please note that, successful installation depends on which services are needed by the installer. So one can fail and other work.

HI,I've got malware problems, I'm tired of paying mac bleepty, and heard about AVG.I downloaded DDS, but can't seem to down load GMR. I have vista home premium 32 bit running on a 64 bit computer, mainly because some of my old programs wouldn't run on vista ultimate 64 bit software. I've attached the two files requested.PaulActually, I have to add that Gmer downloaded but is trying to extract and doesn't seem to be able to. I tried getting task manager up to shut it down and try again but task manager gives a file error...I'm tempted to reboot and try running gmer again.PaulEDIT: Posts merged ~BPHi,I was finally able to run gmer in safe mode, and have attached the log file. Hopefully you guys aren't too busy. For the most part, right now I think I have a malware problem, where a program comes up and tells me I have worms, or identity theft and to purchase their software to fix the problem. Thanks in advance for your help.PaulEDIT: Posts merged ~BP
