# Dell Computer is a mess

Q: Dell Computer is a mess

I just bought a refurbished Dell Dimension 4400 Pentium 4, 1.7GHz, 256MB, 30GB from ubid.com. It came with no operating software or monitor which was fine because I had my own. However, I can't seem to be able to start up the computer. This is what I'm doing;

I turn on the computer with the "Dell Dimension Resource CD" in the computer. (It does say on the top of the cd that "You must boot your computer from this CD to run the diagnostics, which may require changing your computer's boot sequence.")

I) It starts to run & at first it says "Invalid system disk replace the disk, and then press any key." I do so & it then gives me an option to either boot from hard drive or cd, and I select "2" which is cd. It then shows "starting Windows 98 which is a bit odd coz there should be no OS on the computer. I will be installing XP.

II) I then get a list of choices 1)run graphics 2) run 32 bit bell diagnostics 3) run 3com nic config utili 4) create SATA RAID driver diskette 5)Exit to dos 6) Reboot system.

III) I tried chice #1, it passed

IV) Choice 2 it said, "system error this system is not recoginzed as a supported dell pc. these diagnostics may not be run on unsupported sustems. I click "OK"
It then goes back to "I" above and on to the 6 choices again.

V) Choice 3 "Error No 3C90X NICs are installed in this comp. I click "OK"

Basically, all through the 6 choices, I get nowhere except for #1.

The computer I received is by all looks a dell computer. I'm using a HP monitor so could that be an issue? Please let me know how to start this. I have another dell that came with monitor, OS, everything, and I had no problems getting that one started. But that was years ago so I don't remember very well how I did it. Please help!

A: Dell Computer is a mess

The monitor shouldn't affect it, have you tried just running from the WindowsXP cd?

Have bought new Dell Inspiron 3137 laptop w/ Win-8 and Motorola Surfboard cable modem.

First Problem : Find that Dell will not accept connection by other computers on home network over wi-fi or Ethernet (both other networked computers ask for Login/password each attempt - which has not been setup), Dell can initiate connection successfully over wi-fi. All computers can access internet so not a modem problem.

2nd problem : Week later installed "Virtual-Box" v4.12.18 and Win-Xp on Dell as alternate OS but when run Xp cannot connect to anything (but network settings do indicated as "connected" but received packet count is 0) and I don't know what/where the problem is.

Network consists of two desktop computers: one old Dell GX280 running Win-Xp, one ASUS/Intel home-built running Vista Business, one network archive HD, one Brother network printer.

Connection order:
1) Cable modem (10-Gbps service)
2) Netgear router for wi-fi,
3) Netgear 8-port hub,
4) Computers, etc, hardwired on RJ-45 cables

I have tried network configuration & setup on ALL computers as this seems the most likely trouble spot, but my knowledge is inadequate, so - any HELP or even suggestions appreciated! <<<<

THANKS - OldBill

A:Network MESS with Win-8/Dell

Hello oldbill,

I stopped right after I read your first sentence because I did not see any mention of where you contacted your ISP regarding the change. In my specific case, I use Comcast, and I also opted to switch from their modem to my own SB6120 (which was the cream of the crop at the time). When I contacted Comcast support, they first had to confirm that the model was actually supported by Comcast (BTW, not all modems are), and once confirmed, they initiated a custom firmware download to activate it. Now, once properly identified in their system, it updates perfectly as required. Here's what mine looks like so you can stare and compare:

I just recently purchased a refurbished Inspiron M5030 running on Windows 7 64 bit. It has been under two weeks since i bought it. The webcam has suddenly stopped working and when i try to use a program that require a webcam it tells me to plug one in. So all night i have been up trying to fix it with various solutions on google. I have tried installing driver after driver and nothing helped. After all the different methods nothing has worked and i think i made it worse. The webcam no longer appears in the "Device Manager." What on earth do i do now?

How to describe it is difficult. What happens seems to be that with some older messages stored in various folders, they may be "morphed" or jumbled into other messages. Essentially for a given header (message recipient, date, subject, etc.), the body of the message will now consist of a section of another message or multiple messages. I'm not sure how to recreate this problem, but know it is ongoing as some more recent messages (about 6 months ago) have had this problem. I suspect, by the nature of the activity, that possibly the "Compact Mailboxes" may be at fault. However, I don't think I have any way of proving this.

The only way I think I can describe this is through some screen capture shots, attached here as GIFs. In EudoraBug1.gif, you'll see a message dated 7/17/03 to "SWPAJBS Section Leader" and with a subject of "Fw: TOLL FREE PHONE NUMBERS ...". However if you look at the preview section of Eudora for this message, there isn't a grayed area showing the TO and SUBJECT fields that is commonly seen in Eudora. Secondly, none of the material/body in this message was ever sent to the recipient (SWPAJBS Section Leader), however I did send the recipient a message with the previously stated subject. Again, this message seemed to have been "morphed" into another.

The second screen capture is in EudoraBug2.gif. Here, the message is basically opened with BLAH BLAH BLAH toggle chosen to show the full header... Read more

Hello!! This seems to be the best place to find out some answers! A few weeks ago, I had a nasty virus on my computer. Luckily I had internet on my phone and was able to look up how to remove the virus and thought the problem was taken care of. Over the last week or so my computer has slowed to turtle speed, when I click on any program to open it, I can walk away and do something else for 10 mins or so as that is how long it takes to open. I have run MalwareBytes as well as my Antivirus program(norton security suite) and they have found nothing. Granted I have only been able to do a quick scan for av, I tried a full scan and it took 6 days to go through 170,000+ files and wasn't even close to done. So I'm not sure if the virus wasn't fully removed, as I thought, or if this is a ripple effect from having a virus.

And now, upon restarting my computer this morning, it told me that it found new hardware, unknown, that needed to be installed. One of my drivers just disappeared it seems. I'm not sure how, why or what caused this but is there a way to fix it?

Hello, my computer is in a pickle at the moment. For some reason I was infected with some sort of virus/trojan/adware that slowed/completely stopped loading some websites such as google/yahoo and it also kept giving me some popup ads. I tried many scans to get rid of the problem but to no solution. And to make matters worst after one of my scan it sent my computer in chaos. The desktop doesn't load up while an application error message informs me that my userinit.exe failed to initialized properly and which goes the same for my cmd.exe, find.exe, etc. The only way I can fully load my desktop is to manual run task explorer.exe. Any advise? A complete format is the last option... hi, i posted a few weeks ago concerning my problem that my computer turned off at totally random times, i took everyone's advice and it now only does this once every few days, thanks. But now programs (games) exit to windows and/or crash daily, ive tried nearly everything.. i was just wondering if this seems weird...

When i click on "sound, video, and game controllers" in the device manager (btw i have windows xp).. it displays all of the following..

Audio Codecs
Creative Wound Blaster AudioPCI
Game Port for Creative
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs

Please feel free to flame me, but before i installed windows xp i remember only have 3 items here. Could this be a problem ??
i use soundblasterPCI 16bit.

Thanks in advance to anyone who posts

A:Computer Mess

You appear to have a pretty standard lineup of items there. I have an almost identical set, except for different sound card. This doesn't look like the problem.

Refresh my memory, what improved your original problem? You could need a double dose of whatever it was.

Hey gang, hope you can help. My mother's work computer is infected in a bad way. We've been running Malware Bytes and SUPERAntiSpyware with minimal luck. MB finds nothing, SAS finds a ton of things. We did locate and remove a Trojan using Autoruns, but there is still something nasty that is filling up her hard drive and installing malicious programs like StartNow and other browser plugins.

Thanks for the help, just tell us what to do.

UPDATE: Just tried running HitmanPro in safe mode, and the program crashes during its scan.

...I am getting "Antivirus Soft" pop-ups all over, every 10 seconds. It just started happening.

I understand that I'm supposed to post a log, and I did download "HiJack This" ... but I can't open it. I double-clicked the file that was saved to my desktop and it won't open. It says that the file is "infected." I tried changing the extension to .bat and .com but to no avail.

In fact, none of my anti-malware / health software will open. (CCleaner, AusLogics Defrag, TFC, Spybot - Search and Destroy, Spyware Blaster, Malewarebytes' Anti-Malware, and now HiJack This.) Nothing will open.

Hi,

My family's computer is a mess. Nothing on Chrome and IE will load, Firefox loads one page then there is a ton of pop ups and won't load anymore. It's sluggish. I've uninstalled programs that were obvious malware like Fast Clean Pro and ran the antivirus they had installed, as well as spybot search and destroy but it didn't make a difference. The Security Center won't turn on, and a lot of security updates failed to install. Please help! Thank you!

I'm new here and I need big help. I have a virus or spyware, or probably a combination of them. On my sick computer (I'm using a different machine to access this forum) my desktop is blacked out with a message saying Warning, Your in Danger......Secure Yourself Right Now. This happened last night and I bought a copy of Spy Sweeper, which didn't help. Now when I start up the machine I can't run any programs, so I'm at a complete loss. Please help. At this point I would be happy to reinstall my entire system, but can't seem to get that working either.

A:New here and my computer is a mess

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. Open up the result.txt file created. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Try it in Safe Mode, if you cannot do in Normal Mode.

You may need to do an XP Repair, if you cannot at least do this for us.

I went and looked at her computer last night and it's not good at all
She has XP and a DSL connection, I could get online and I ran a scan at PandaSoft it found 3 downloader viruses and disinfected them, I checked for Sasser at Microsoft and it said she didn't have it but I saw it in her running processes Lsass.exe and I found it in two files in a search.

Anything I clicked on said it was not a valid Win32 application, McAfee keeps popping up and telling me to scan her computer it has a virus, but mcafee is one of the things I can't run, I couldn't run hijackthis after I downloaded it and I couldn't clean newdotnet either.

Do I need to reformat her harddrive and start from scratch and load XP again or is there a way around doing that?
Every computer ding-dong I know personally now has XP and I can't fix it because I know Win98 I just have to wing it and pray that I don't screw up their computer more LOL

Does anyone have any advice, I'm just a helpless person with an old computer LOL

A:SIL's computer is a mess

Lsass.exe in the running processes may be legit, it assists with validating user logons.
As taken from liutilities.com
Windows Local Security Authority Server Process handles Windows security mechanisms. It verifies the validity of user logons to your computer or server. Technically, the software generates the process that is responsible for authenticating users for the Winlogon service.Click to expand...

I'd right click > properties on the lsass.exe's you found and see what the information says.

If she has 'lsass.exe' running in msconfig/startup that's another deal.

Newdotnet can generally be removed by add/remove programs and will be there as either newdotnet or new.net. Check to be sure it isn't in running processes. If it is, kill it prior to removal.

About running Mcafee, try booting up into safe mode if you can and see if you can run it from there.

Basics: My 5-year-too-old computer needed replacing. I decided to buy the parts for a new computer separately.

Old Computer: Intel P4 2ghz CPU, NVIDIA Geforce MX420 Graphics, Crap Motherboard and Memory...

New Computer: AMD X2 6000+ CPU, 7900GS Graphics card (PCIE x16), ASUS M2R32-MVP motherboard, 700W Power Supply, GSKILL 2g (2x1G)Memory

Had to RMA motherboard the first time...

Plugged the basics in last night (Graphics, processor, 1 stick memory) and it turned on went to bios etc.

This morning I plugged in my old HD (IDE) that has my OS and my new SATA drive, unformatted. Entered BIOS set old HD as primary boot, SATA slave, etc. Booted up, would get to the initial Windows XP Logo loading screen (black background... w/ logo) and then would go black and restart. After this happened a few times, it got stuck at the Logo screen (didn't go black) and the loading bar would just freeze. The FINAL time I saw this screen, it froze, then changed wierd colors and the pixels were all warped (creating a deformed logo and loading bar) NOW the computer doesn't boot at all. Doesn't get to bios... No Post. nothing.

Compatibility issues? Component fried? HELP!

Hey there....I'm not sure what the problem is but I believe there is a virus in my comp somewhere....I'm running win xp pro....My CPU is at a constant 100% and when I open the task manager one of my svchost.exe (SYSTEM) is anywhere from 95% to 99% except when I boot up in safe mode than my CPU fluctuates as it should with a low %....Of course my comp is lagging terribly. Both IE and Mozilla redirect from any site I try to use and some sites such as bleeping computer won't load and time out and a lot of sites will load as htmls....I tried to run an online virus scan but it will freeze at 0%. I tried to install a few antiviruses but they won't install however I did manage to install avast in safe mode but when I ran it it didn't pick up anything however it didn't like the htm files and labelled them as a type of trojan. I have ran superantispyware and malware bytes which only picked up tracking cookies....I ran gmer and atf-cleaner....I also ran hijackthis and dds and have included the logs for them....Any help at all is greatly appreciated....

Hello, and welcome.

I'm not seeing much in that log. Can you be more descriptive about the popups you're getting?

Deckard's System Scanner will give us a more comprehensive set of logs from which to work. It will also attempt to download and install the latest version of HijackThis.

Note:

DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts

If the following message from DSS appears, please click on "Yes" to allow it to download HijackThis, if you don't already have it.

DSS has installed HijackThis, and placed a shortcut on your desktop. Click "OK" to allow the scan to continue.

Ok, so for the past years my computer has been working fine. Until today, and so many problems all at once. When i started my computer up because the power had to be turned off for a couple of minutes this black screen popped up saying : " Checking file system on C: the type of the file system is NTFS. Cannot open volume for direct access. windows has finished checking the disk. ...... " I've been googling how to fix it, and nothing works.

Then comes my whole internet, the wifi is working perfectly fine, but when it comes to the computer it says that their are no connections. When i hover over the little computers in the right corner it says "the dependency service or group failed to start" I've also googled this, and nothing.

also you know the usual look for windows, how it's blue, and start button is round well not on my computer, it's all white. And the start button is a square. I've tried fixing it and nothing. I'm not sure if it has to do with either of my other problems.

But can someone help ? I've literally tried so many things and nothing seems to work.

A:My computer is a mess.

Work through these same steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start.

You need to check for infection before attempting repairs as it may not repair if infected. The steps will show you how to do all of this from boot using the Win7 bootable installer or System Repair Disk.

If you don't have the installer it is provided in tutorial.

Hello. I'm new here but I do know some computer lingo. Here is the story. I'm playing Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 Sunday night, and everything is running smoothly on the computer. It works just the way it always did for the 2 years I had it. When I was ready to go to bed, quit the game, then shutdown the computer. Nothing was wrong. Then, on Monday afternoon, I turn on my computer and it is running exceptionally and unusually slow. A lot slower than the night before. I get many application errors for a lot of programs and things that I click on (mostly the 0xc000142 type where it says to terminate the application). I can't get on the internet through internet explorer, but under network connections it says I am connected. Also, on top of it being slow, the computer freezes every minute (I can move the mouse and all but it won't let me click anything or open programs). I go to the System Restore under Control Panel and I click to go back to Saturday, then hit "Next," but it won't do anything. I keep clicking it (it's not frozen though) and nothing happens. Then after a while I get a Blue Screen of Death saying there is a problem with windows and it needs to shut down. I get a stop message at the bottom and then it does a "physical memory dump," then restarts. I have no idea what happened. I ran virus programs and they didn't find anything. I have a feeling it is something to do with the hardware or a drive, but I'm not su... Read more

You might be infected...

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe

Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
A security expert with a gold shield to the right of their name should take a look at your log - please be patient.

Hello,
This forum has been great in helping me fix my computer at work, thank you! I am hoping that you can fix my step-father's computer. It is one great big mess. It runs very slow and has pop-ups appear even when IE isn't open. I again ran ad-aware, Spybot and CWS. It's still horrific. Could you take a look at his HJT log, please? I honestly don't know what to do with the dear man, he'll just click on any link or "OK" when surfing the web. Thank you!

A:help my computer is a mess

When did the problem begin, and did you ever try "system restore" to resolve it?
I can run a debugging utility on the dump files if you do this:

1 > create a new folder on the desktop and call it "dumpcheck" or whatever you like
2 > navigate to %systemroot%\minidump and copy the last few minidump files to that folder.%systemroot% is normally c:\windows. They are numbered by date. You can paste that address in address bar to get there.
3 > close the folder and right click on it and select Send to Compressed (zipped) Folder.
4 > use the "manage attachments" in the "advanced" reply window to upload that zip file here as an attachment.

This might point us to a non-system driver causing the error, if one exists for it.

Since almost all bugchecks can be caused by faulty ram, I would recommend you perform memory tests.

Hi!

last week I started receiving the following error message after start up.

The procedure entry point WahEnableNonIFSHandleSupport could not be located in the dynamic link library WS2HELP.dll.

on sunday my husband ran ADWARE and SPYBOT. there were 96 critical items that came up on ADWARE which were "fixed". When spybot ran it also found the following and could not fix them.

c:\\WINDOWS\System32\wsnpoem
c:\\WINDOWS\System32\Ntos.exe

then my husband ran the registry mechanic on my computer. after that ran on restart the only thing that came up was a black desktop with my background picture. No icons. we restarted in safe mode and the same thing happened.

Under create new task we pushed enter with
c:\
and they icons showed up again. with the following error message

/idlist,:0:3008,C:\
Windows cannot find '/idlist,:0:3008,C:\'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

yikes! help!
oh about 3 months ago my computer started to randomly lock me out of files saying I was not permitted to use them and that the administrator would hae to grant me access...I am the administrator...is my computer hijacked? if so what does that mean?

A:Help My Computer Is A Mess

Welcome to Bleeping Computer.Could I first ask what operating system you are using, and under which service pack? This will make sure that we use the right tools. Please check the spelling of the file name "hysysdrv.exe". I think you may mean "hpsysdrv.exe" . If you had indeed meant "hpsysdrv.exe", then it is not malware of any kind. That was probably caused by a corrupt file in your system files. We can run a scan after. You icons had disappeared because the process "explorer.exe" was terminated or did not start. This is very common with malware infections. The ID error you recieved was caused by starting "explorer.exe" (by trying to open the c:), without any parameters. So the computer input the /idlist parameter in for you. This should be a one time occurence. The next time you need to restore your icons type "explorer.exe" into the task manager run box."Ntos.exe" and wsnpoem are a trojan viruses.

Thank you!

Hi

After using my Aunties computer I realised it had a few issues. After realising she had no firewall or anti virus I wasnt that surprised when I scanned it and found 10 viruses on the computer.

Hopefully these have been irradicated. However wierd things happen at start up and there are still lots of spyware in.

Please could you check the hijack this log and also recommend a good free spyware detector.

The operating system is windows 2000 professional. It is also in Germany so home page pages are set at .de if that is important. There are also 2 hard drives C and D and she has named some folders with Z. Im not really sure what is going on there anyways the log.

Whenever I insert a DVD into my drive (its a CD-RW/DVD drive) a window pops up and asks me what I want to launch this with (thats not the problem). About 5 seconds after that, no matter what even if I dont touch anything, my monitor turns off, then back on but the screen is black. The little light goes from green then to orange then back over and over again. I am forced to restart my computer. Ive tried everything I could think of to fix this. New codecs, doing a system restore and uninstalling my media players. But when I boot up Knoppix this doesnt happen. I can go in and see the files on the disc without a problem. How do I fix this?

Hi BP, I need some help fixing my mom's computer. She works from home on it, but her system is best known for having connection issues. I'm pretty savvy at fixing this stuff, but I'm nearly at my wit's end.

About 2 months ago I scanned her system with Malwarebytes while in Safe Mode, it found some things related to something called PUP.MyWebSearch. I quarantined them but recently my mom has been experiencing connection issues again. Today I scanned it once again in safe mode, and it had found yet another PUP.MyWebSearch.

Anyways I was finally able to open Firefox afterwards, but had noticed some links in her history that don't belong there.. links like 'features.html', among others.

Can somebody help? I'll respond as soon as I can get the chance.

I was working on some videos, which engendered several unwanted pop-ups. I removed what I could out of "Add and Remove Programs". In the process I must have really messed up my computer. Not only is it now painfully slow, but I still get numerous pop-ups including Runtime Error, etc. messages.

I was trying to download an HP program that I've downloaded many times before; it froze midway. The tech support at HP connected to my computer, which - she said - was full of errors; she tried to install a driver and was unable to do so.

My computer is a Dell Inspiron 530, and I use WindowsXP. The HP program had come with an HP printer that I had acquired some years ago, and it is incompatible with Windows7 or above.( That HP printer disc includes software to create a certain type of calendar that I make yearly for my various family members, and that's why I really need to be able to use it.)

What can I do to clean up my computer - I tried Reimage, but it crashed too.

Hi and welcome to TSG,

When the trial period expires it becomes feature-limited freeware but is still worth keeping as a good on-demand scanner.

Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double click it to launch the set up program.
Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
Next select the "Start Update" button. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once the update has completed, select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"
Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will run it in safe mode.
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning as it may interfere with the scanning process:

I have Windows 7 64 bit. I hid KB3035583 to stop the Windows 10 pop ups. Well they started again and also my browser home page was changed to MSN. I checked in updates and KB3035583 was no longer hidden. It is now. How did this happen?

A:How Did Microsoft Mess with my Computer

Hello William,

It can happen when a new version of the update has been released.

To stop the "Upgrade to Windows 10" update, this would be more effective if you like.

Hi All,

For the past few days computer has been acting crazy. Running very slow, getting progressively worse. Computer shuts down saying it has a severe error. But the rest of the message I can't read cause it turns off too quickly. Happens alot when I'm trying to run an antispyware program or antivirus. Today no sound coming from speakers. I can't even do a system restore. Keep getting message that computer can't be restored to that point, try another. Every restore point I try I get the same message. I've uninstalled programs I've installed the past few days. Verizon DSL etc. But notice I can't completely delete some of them. I think I'm in big trouble....

I've been running Adaware, MicrosoftAntiSpy, etc. I keep getting Apropos but everytime I delete it it just comes back.

Here's a copy of my Hijackthis log file:

A:Computer A Mess/Spyware???

16 more replies

Hi,

A friend has given me his laptop, he has photos and music on it that he would like saving. you know what its like when a virus comes along, you need to beat it before you wipe it!! its a male thing!

anyway. i have had a look and instantly on boot you dont get to desktop, you need to run explorer. when the desktop appears the browser is hijacked and keeps opening up random things. Avast is disabled and wont enable. i just get error messages. When i goto other AV websites the browser redirects.

Finally when i run Rkill i get a blue screen of death.

I have been in to command prompt to activate the administrator account and i can now log in directly as admin. he says he thinks the USB ports are disabled but i have not been in to it that deeply yet.

Any initial thoughts?

I was trying to reset the computer to its original settings. I sent it through the process, it got to 22 % and froze. I unplugged it and waited about 5 min. and plugged it back in. Now it's flashes on to the HP screen and then goes black and restarts again.  I tried hitting the esc. key to try to go into BIOS but none of the F keys except for F1 ( System Info ) responds. I got a boot disc for Windows 7 to try and boot it that way but. The start up menu will not allow my  to change boot priority ( F9 ). Is there anyway this can be fixed, and Booting properly, I have a desk top PC and Tablet to transfer files if need be.

Hey guys, I'm not super literate when it comes to computer hardware, but I'll do my best. First off, I'll give you my specs to the best of my ability.

PCChips A13g+ Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Processor
Nvidia Geforce graphics card(Not sure the number, but I'm am pretty sure it a 9xxx)
Windows XP SP3

So, I recently bought two 2GB sticks of Kingston 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Model KVR800D2E6K.

I put them into my computer with no problems and it started right up. I was super stoked because I had been playing Guild Wars 2 on 1 GB until today. I started the game up, and while it was loading it froze. I couldn't tab out, couldn't use task manager, nothing. I turned the computer off, turned it back on and it wouldn't boot past the master/slave identify screen. I shut it off again and turned it back on, and the computer wouldn't boot even that far. I got a dreaded beep-beep-beep over and over. Assuming there was something wrong with the RAM I put the old sticks in, and now the system boots but I get a message, "K8 npt data changed-- Update new data to DMI." Then it tries to start up from the drive but can't, and then it asks to put in OS disk and boot from there. I don't know for sure if I have my OS disk. Is there any way to fix this without it? If not, I can search for it, but I would really appreciate any kind of help. Also, has any... Read more

I'm trying to remember what I did to screw up my computer. I had been stupid and found a pirated program which I downloaded and in the readme it had me change something so that it matched the number the program was registered to... it was an ID for this computer that related to the network I remember, and it was a big chain of random numbers. The readme had me download some program from the Windows site that had been developed to change this number. I just can't remember what it was called. Any ideas?

Oh, and I got what I deserved for downloading a pirated program. My entire computer was screwed up after that. I tried a System Restore but that made my entire computer nonfunctional so I had to revert back. All my programs (but the one I had downloaded haha) lost their registrations and I had no way of reverting that number, and I had to re-enter all the serials of my programs. And since then, my UAC has been messed up so I have it turned off and my file browser is still broken...

A:HJT HELP!- Son has made a mess of his computer

Hello lisaa7002,

So far the logs shows two adware related installs there with Big Fish Games Toolbar and Mario Forever Toolbar. Have you tried uninstalling these through Add/Remove Prgorams yet? If not, do that now, reboot and run a new HijackThis log after to check.

Then let's look at what all else is installed there.

Open Hijackthis.
Click Config - Misc Tools - Open Uninstall Manager.
A list of the entries in Add/Remove programs will appear.
Click on Save List...
The list will be saved as 'Uninstall_list.txt'
Copy & Paste the contents back here for review.
Also go Here and download Silent Runners to your desktop. Run it, and post back here the log it creates. If your AV queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious. It will create a file named Startup Programs, and will notify when the scan is complete. Copy the log from the Startup Programs file back here. You can use separate posts here if needed.

I've got a avp.exe error going on, I use Kaspersky Lab anti virus and for the most part it works great but I have noticed that when I bring up the windows task manager it shows that avp.exe (I have three, 2 in user and 1 in system) is using 83% (goes up and down but never belown 60%) CPU and 150K+ Mem. Usage..

I've googled the problem a couple of times but have never found a real answer or way to fix this..
I'm pretty much a computer idiot but if anyone thinks they can help me try and solve this it would be much appreciated..

This is the hijackthis thing that seems to be useful in fixing computer problems..

I have so many things that seem like malware I don't even know where to begin. I've been getting PC optimizer plus ads every time I turn in my computer this week. My google chrome automatically goes to search.conduit, which I suppose isn't that bad considering that my Firefox won't even open. Been dealing with a couple pop up ads recently. How do I eliminate all of this?Edit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Hi, first of all i want to say you guyz doing a great job in helping people with their problems, i've read some of the threads that is similar to my problems, but however i still feel like i might have some extra problems so i send my hijackthis log..

The last couple of days i've got several problems with trojan and spywares and somehow i cannot get rid of them. They seem to keep comming back. The problems are, sometimes (but not so many times) some adult popups shows up, some yellow shield in my taskbar is saying "your computer might be at risk" which is i'm 100% sure not Windows's own warning, A Popup warning looks similar to a Windows warning window shows up saying that Windows firewall has detected etc etc do you want to learn how to etc... , i keep getting adult and gambling sites in my favorites (they seem to come back whenever i open iexplorer so i guess the program restarts with explorer. Other than that i don't recall anything else except 3-4 days ago ive had some virus warning which my antivirus couldnt delete and the weird thing was the filename wasnt a name but was a weblink, and now i seem to delete some part of that virus since i don't get the warning anymore i still get these urls in my regedit in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SOFTWARE / MICROSOFT / Windows / Current Version / Urls which is something like http://195.95.218.98/users/ronaldo/web/minidrv.exe and more

Anyway hope these little informations about whats going on helps on you guyz helping me :... Read more

Hi. I'm new to this site so please bear with me if I have trouble explaining my problem(s).
First of all my computer runs extremely slowly unless I have just rebooted.
Secondly, I have been getting MANY programs locking up and when I go into "Task Manager" it will say the program is not responding BUT I am unable to end the task or even close the program as I get the message "cannot close program it is locked by the system."
Now, I have a problem in that I can not save ANYTHING!
Not in Word, or any other program. Even my text editor programs won't save anything!
I have considered throwing this thing out the window,(I'm on the second floor) but I wouldn't want to take the chance of hitting one of the dogs who like to sleep right under the window!
Any help will be MOST appreciated.
Thanks
Peach414
PS I also can not open any file.
When I go into a program and click open I get the screen with the blue band at the top saying
"open", and it is at the right place in files (In my case it should open in the D drive), but there are none of the folders or files showing on the "open" screen.
Same thing as when I go to save, only on the "Save" screen.

I would suggest finding someone that has a flash drive that can put a startup scanner of some kind onto it and run a virus scan. there may be a virus that is corrupting the files when you open them stopping you from shutting it down.

Hi

You guys have helped me in the past and now my neighbor has asked for help with her computer. It barely runs. It has limewire on it and the anitvirus has expired two years ago. I tried to put on AVG free virus scan but nothing with an executable file will open. If I try, the window comes up with "what program do you want to open this file with"? I have tried in safe mode and tried to open as the administrator and nothing works. It is hopeless? She is searching for her XP disk and my last option is to reformat. Is there anyway to run an executable file if it doesn't open itself? I have tried to use "run' and right click to "open" or "run as" and no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Like the title says, I removed Adaware yesterday and for a few hours, the internet was working better than it has in years. then all of a sudden, I lost my Internet connection and system restore won't work at all. I don't even know where to begin.

yesterday, I was getting exclamation marks in my device manager next to the tcp/ip protocol driver and the ip network address translator but today they are gone.

Can someone please point me in the right direction? I've tried the netsh command to no avail.

I'm using Windows Xp with a service pack 3

Greetings, so my computer is a mess, worms among other things. I have ran Avast antivir, ZoneAlarm firwall, and spyware terminator and none have worked. In fact when I try download AVG the Internet Explorer is shut down, even if I try to search for anti-viral software I am exited from the explorer!

Avast found Worms.Win32.AutoRun.xcs but could not fix it, so I think HijackThis this is the last option, but I need help locating the process in the Logfile.

I followed the instructions with DDS log and hope somebody can make sense of it.

A:WHY DID your software update mess up my computer and when are you going to fix it??

Except the updates DO work, it would help if we knew what updates you installed prior to this and whether this is a clean install or you upgraded from 7, 8 or 8.1 as stating that "your computer did automatic updates and now it's messed up" doesn't give us much to work with.

I am running a HP Pavilion Elite m9500y Desktop w/ 8GB of RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GS, and an AMD Phenom X4 9750 Quad-Core Processor. Also the OS is a Windows 7 Ultimate.

Anyways my computer has been recently acting up on me and it all started one day. I turned on my computer and went to boot up, and at the part where the users are supposed to pop up, it went to a black screen with only the mouse cursor. So I decided just to reinstall Windows 7, b/c I checked every solution for that problem, such as System Restore and System Repair, and all of them resulted the same thing, black screen with the mouse cursor only.

So I reinstall Windows 7 Ultimate on my computer and then when I go into the made account from the Windows 7 Setup, it says: The user profile service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded. So I looked up more stuff about this and then I came across a solution where I should turn on the Administrator account on from the CMD from Safe Mode, but I used the Windows 7 CD to go into the CMD, b/c it kept screwing me over with that error message on Safe Mode.

The problem still doesn't stop there, the Admin account I turned on apparently said it was a temporary account so anything I downloaded it would vanish when I re-log. Well after about a week the message disappeared as I started to save programs on to the Desktop which makes no sense, but apparently my computer won't let me save things on to the C: directory b/c I have no permission, when I'm on the A... Hi everyone

This is my first post on this here fine community.

I hope you guys forgive me if I posted this in the wrong section as I'm not sure where my "problem" is best discussed at.

I decided to post this here after using the search function to look for "AVG 2011 related" threads & finding a few of 'em on here.

Now about the problem at hand...

I've been a "believer" of AVG for three years now & swear by the AV's performance (in the past), but this recent version totally made me lose confidence in them.

I've been using AVG 9 for some time now & though it sometimes has issues with nProtect GameGuard (I play an MMORPG that uses it) there are work arounds like adding the MMO's folder to AVG's list of exempted files/folders that it scans.

I updated to version 10 (2011) last Saturday when a pop up from AVG told me about it. Naturally as one of their "loyal" users I decided to update, yeah I know I was a gullible idiot

So the update finished & I had to reboot which I'm quite accustomed by now.

Then after reboot, I decided to fiddle with the AV's new features (God did I look stupid being tricked by eye candy lol). One of the things I noticed was the "Rootkit" Scanner bit, something AVG used to offer free as a separate download, but they then made only available to paid customers in version 9.

But the one feature that caught my eye was that damn "PC Analyzer"... Read more

Well my computer has started to get really slow lately. It has been freezing up randomly and giving me the blue screen every so often. Sometimes applications take 3 times as long to load up. It has even froze up while booting up a few times. Sometimes when it starts to freeze up my computer will start making a clicking noise in it. I just replaced the hard drive about a month ago due to it completely dieing on me. Just wondering if someone can take a look at my HJT log and see if there is anything in it or if they know what might be wrong. Thank you.
