# partitioning a dell computer

Q: partitioning a dell computer

Good evening, I tried to help a friend out, unfortunately, I ended up messing up his new computer from Dell.
I deleted all drives onhis hd and repartitioned using PM7 and when I try to load the OS, it just shows www.dell.com and inderneath a message,
LOADING PBR FOR DESCRIPTOR 1...DONE
then the cursor just blinks.
Any way to fix this? TIA for any help in this matter.

I'm reformatting my sister's computer after she received a virus that screwed her computer up. She has a Dell Inspiron E1405, and when I went to reformat, I was surprised to see this:

My question is this: Why is it partitioned this way? Is it ok to delete all of the partitions and reformat with just one drive? When I went to her My Computer, there was only one drive, it didn't show up like the screen was showing.

i have recently bought a dell inspiron 15R laptop in which an OEM partition(125mb), a recovery partition(9.5gb) and a c: partition of 288gb is present. I'm trying to create c drive of around 50gb and another drive of the rest of space(238gb) by using 'shrink volume' option..but shrink size beyond 145gb isn't allowed so I can not create c drive of less than 145gb which I don't want to. Is there any way to make c drive of less than 145gb(say intende 50gb)? please help me. thanx in advance.....

Use free Partition Wizard bootable CD to "Resize" C. Partition Wizard.URL

If you still can't shrink enough, then defrag using Auslogics Disk Defragger to see what files are blocking shrinkage on the right side.

If these are System Files, use free Perfect Disk 10 trial program to first "Shrink to consolidate files", then rightclick C to Offline Defrag>System files.

What is the best partitioning arrangement? I have a new computer with a 1TB HDD and have created a partition for the Windows 7 OS and programs I install of about 300GB and another partition of about 265GB for data files.

1. I would like to know if this is the best arrangement and if not what is.
2. I would also appreciate advice on moving data folders/files to the new partition and enuring that is where they go in the future.
3. Is it advisable to move any of the user data folders to the new partition.

In anticipation, I appreciate all the advice I can get on the best and easiest way of doing the above.

A:Partitioning a New Computer

There are lots of ways of partitioning drives, and there really is no right or wrong. It's really about what suits your needs best.

Having said that, Windows 7 will use about 15 - 20gb depending on several factors. Applications often around the same, depending on the number of installed applications.

I have allocated a 96gb partition for my windows and applications (This is on a 256gb SSD, the rest of that drive is allocated for media encoding work).

I have a 2tb spinner drive. It is split into 4 partitions. One for games, one for authoring of movies, one for temporary storage of media before I burn it to disk and one for other uses. I could have just as easily partitioned it as a single drive.

In regards to your user data.. I prefer to move this off the windows drive because it reduces the chances of me wiping it out if I have to reinstall windows (by forgetting to back it up), and reduces the writes to my SSD.

I have likewise moved my temp folders off the SSD (I have 32gb of ram so I have set aside 4gb of that for a RAMDrive where all my temp files are stored). Again, this reduces the writes to the SSD.

Moving the location of user data can be done with 3rd party applications or by tweaking the registry, or via this method.. Redirect a folder to a new location - Microsoft Windows Help

By default, most applications will then write data to the new location.

Of course, backing up your data to an external device, such as USB drive, is always good practice, regardless wh... Read more

i was merging two hard drives together using partition magic 8.0 and my computer froze. The two partitions E: and Fwindows) were supposed to combine to make a new F:. When i restarted the computer i got a message in BIOS saying that my hard drives config had changed and windows couldn't be found. Before i did the merge partition magic had me made some floppies that take me to the partition magic program but the f: drive is gone and there is an extended drive where both E: and F: are. Is their anything i cant do but format and start over?

Hi

I am purchasing a new computer. It will have a 160 gig drive and a second drive of 80 gig. I would like to make drive images of the C: drive on an ongoing basis. If I had 10 gig of data on a disk drive of 160 GB, would it use the same space on a backup as 10 gig on a 20 gig drive. Dumb question?? What I am trying to determine is if free space takes any room. My guess is that it would make no difference.

Thanks.

I am preparing a new computer. I created four (4) partitions on the disk: 'C' is to be reserved for a future "Linux" OS; "D" and "E" are for programs and files [?- Which should come first?]; "F" will be used for the XP Pro OS. The sizing followed recommendations received here. Linux will be first and XP Pro last, per strong recommendations at MS support sites. I also formatted all in FAT32, as the installation instruction book advised for dual booting. I also learned here that Linux requires FAT32. {The disk is 40MG total.}

Although I did not use "Advanced Options" to direct that the OS be put in "F" (My 75 year old memory failed me after reading that instruction only a short while before.), I found it there with the notation "boot" when I used "Disk Management" to see what happened after the partitioning process. I also noted that the "system" files were in "C," which I want for Linux. Is it OK to leave as is (logic tells me 'no'), if not how do I move those "system" files to "F" with the OS? I understand that that arrangement is AOK.

When formatting I managed to skip "D" and "E" and found them unformatted in "Disk Management," so I formated them there. Another bungle(s) ensued, and this is what I now have in the listing:
(C Partition-Basic-FAT32-Healthy(system)
(F Partition-Basic-FAT32-Healthy(boot)

I was repartitioning a hard drive (not the C drive) by dividing the drive to 2 partitions. The HDD is 1 TB with lots of important things on it.

My computer crashed in the middle of the partitioning and now it just says "not formatted". I was able to give it a drive letter so I see it in the explorer window but it has no file system and is "not formatted".

What can I do to get my data off of it? Do I just need to fix the MBR? Do I just need to assign a file system? Can I assign a file system without formatting it? Can I just recover data from it with some 3rd party data recovering software? Which one? Should I format it (to give it a file system) and THEN use a 3rd party data recovery software that can restore data from a formatted drive?

Please help. Thank you.

A:Computer crash while partitioning

Sometimes TestDisk (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk) can restore a partition, but it depends probably in large part exactly where things stood at the time of the crash. The program can also copy files off if it can see them. Otherwise for data recovery I've had good luck with Easeus Recovery Wizard (http://www.easeus.com/datarecoverywizard/) when there was a partition problem. It was only once but it worked and it can be tried out to see if it can recover data or not and only require purchase to recover the data it sees. Recuva is free and the runtime.org recovery software works similar to the Easeus software.

Hi,

I sure hope someone will be able to help me on this.
I partitioned a 2Tb hardrive into 3 partitions but Windows 7(64bit) is hiding the 2nd primary partition, it is not showing up in the My Computer.

It shows as hidden in EaseUS and I can't change the drive name via Disk Management because the options are all grayed out except for the "Delete Volume" and no option to change drive letter in EaseUS..

I have formatted the drive and had deleted it too and create a new partition but still the same. All 3 partitions are NTFS and the 3rd one is logical.
I have made it unhidden by the Partition Manager and it shows up in My Computer until I reboot and it's hidden again.

I am hoping to create a dual boot system that's why I created 3 partitions (2 OSes and 1 storage).
Does anyone know what's wrong here?
Thanks for any input.

I have enormous computer problems. It all started a few days ago. When I initially installed Vista I did so on a 20GB partition of my 300 Gig hard drive. The rest of the drive was an extended partition with four logical drives. Over time Vista grew and eventually the partition became too small to house Vista. I used a partition manager tool to resize the partitions and give Vista a 100GB partition. The problem is that when I did so the largest partition on my Hard Drive, containing VITAL data, was ruined.

Before I did the repartitioning, I backed up the entire contents of my computer onto a separate using the Vista Computer Backup utility. How that I have the Hard drive partitioned correctly, I don't want to have Vista Backup reformat and repartition the hard dive as it once was (with only 20 gig for vista) and I know of no way to pick and choose data. Further, windows seems to have saved it all into some sort of inaccessible archive. What should I do? I need this data...

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested. About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used. Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro? I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course. I have a Dell 926 printer interfaced to it via USB. Printer driver is installed and the printer does communicate at times with the computer and does a good job printing. However, intermittently when trying to print a document I'll get a message on the computer that says that communication has been lost and print job failed. I've checked all connections to make sure they are solid and no debris that might cause this. That has not corrected the problem. The other thing that happens is that the document I want to print will stay in the print queue/spooler and if I shut the computer and printer down and restart both it will print the job. And it may continue to print jobs but it's just a matter of time. Needless to say this is frustrating. That should be the quickest way to reformat your Dell and will leave the recovery partition intact (along with the Tools partition if you have one). If you'd like to get rid of all partitions, then you'll have to delete the partitions and create one partition to hold everything. Then you can install Vista with the Operating System, Drivers, and Utilities disks that came with your Dell. Personally, I'd go with the first option above - it's quicker and you won't have to install all the drivers and applications. 1 more replies Answer Match 32.76% My mother has a new dell computer windows 8 bought a month ago. A:Dell computer will not turn on Dell computers have a nasty habit of "locking up" at times. sometimes unplugging the computer and letting it sit for 30 minutes then plugging it back in will solve the problem and sometimes you have to strip the components and add them piece by piece until you get it working again. the process is to remove ALL components except the processor( including disconnnecting monitor, keyboard, mouse). plug in and power up shut down unplug, add memeory plugin and power up, unplug add hard drive plugin power up, power off, unplug, add video card( if there is one) power up at this point you should be able to tell if it is booting or not. Hi, I have had a lot of trouble on my 6 year old Dell Desktop Dimension 2400 computer, it is too complex to go into detail here' but it has been a nightmare for nearly 4 weeks and I am still going to have do it all over again as in reinstall Win XP / or the drivers at least.

It crashes to Bluescreen every time I Insert a USB stick, Connect and start my Printer, or connect my Western Dig Ext HD which has all the stuff I backed up on.

Wow. Yea. Sounds like your machine is currently "quite the mess"!

You should certainly start with the drivers on the Dell web site.

Always start with the chipset drivers. I'd do network and storage (IDE) drivers next then the others. Install drivers before installing the applications.

having nothing better to do, i decided to take apart my computer and finally install a new hard drive i have kept for almost a year. so i decided to give myself a challenge and take the thing apart completely, taking almost all the things off of the motherboard and stripping the shell of everything except for the motherboard. i then used an air duster on everything, but as i dusted the geforce driver, some of the liquid inside sprayed on it but then quickly evaporated. i pieced all the pieces as they were(or so i think), and turned the computer on, but my monitor did not turn on at all. i unplugged the monitor, and it said it was searching for a signal(after i unplugged it from the computer.

i am not very experienced with computer hardware, and right now all i know is that it is a refurbished hp compaq desktop.

A:Dell computer won't stay on

That liquid is most likely duster propellant and it won't hurt anything. You probably didn't attach the front panel wires properly back to the motherboard and hopefully you didn't damage the motherboard with a static electricity discharge. Take the computer to a friend or someone that knows how to repair computers. If you have damaged something by doing all this yourself, chalk it up to experience

Hello,
I just purchased a new XPS 8900 desktop delivered on 5/25/2016 and is restarting itself.  No new hardware installed or program except World of Warcraft and Ventrilo.   Just really started using this machine late last week since I was really busy after it arrived.
I research the web and it said it maybe PSU related issue.  It is under warranty but any idea why a new computer is restarting it self?
Thank you.
Susan

A:New Dell Computer Restarting by Itself

Windows 10?
There are many possible reasons, both hardware and software: PSU, RAM or hard drive problem, overheating, corrupted OS or other software...
Does it just restart? Any errors on the screen? You can look in Windows Event Viewer for errors around the time of a crash that might point you in the right direction.
If you bought it directly from Dell, I believe you have 21 days from invoice date (not delivery date) to return it so contact Dell Tech Support ASAP.
If you got it from a big box store, you can probably return/exchange it under whatever policy they have. So get going.
Either way, be sure to reset Windows to the factory image before you return it.

Yo, my father has a Dell Dimension 2400 as his office computer(see bottom of this post for tech specs) and I want to upgrade it to an AMD Athlon 64 3300+ Socket 754. What I wanted to do was place the new upgrade into the same case as the Dell. Here's what I plan on purchasing...

AMD Athlon 64 3300+ 2.40GHz / 256KB Cache / 1600MHz FSB / OEM / Socket 754 / Processor

My problem is that I want to get a motherboard which will fit the ATX power connector in the Dell computer and that the Motherboard will be able to use the amount of power in the Dell computer (not sure of the wattage of the PSU). Any ideas for a good Mobo is appreciated.

Tech Specs (Dell Dimension 2400):
Pentium 4 - 2.4 Ghz
Some Intel Mobo w/ integrated graphics
2 x 256 MB PC2700 333Mhz
...etc... lol, nothing much else matters

I'm ASSUMING that the Power Supply is 20 pin (I'm not at my father's office so I wouldn't know). If you're missing any info that you need to help me let me know.

A:Upgrade a Dell Computer...

What is it you plan on doing with the computer? gaming? if the present motherboard has a AGP port you would be better off spending your money on a graphics card.

Your also going to need a copy of XP once you switch the motherboard from a intel chipset to a amd chipset your not going to be able to boot from the existing hard drive. you also wont be able to use the dell recovery disk to reload windows once you swap mobo's.

Most of Dell's PSU's with P4's are 300watt

This time it installed but seems to skip past the part near the end where it asks for all users names and the part where it checks for connectivity. That itself may not be a problem. However when I boot into the desktop I can't get onto the internet. I went into network connections and don't find any local area connection or net adapter.I don't know what to do at this point. When computer is left on too long, computer freezes. Currently the "install/uninstall shield" remains in my system tray without installing anything. thanks!

A:Slow Computer/Dell

It seems that your virtual memory is quite low, Go to your uninstall and try uninstalling programs and such that you rarly or never use. Low space on your hard disk usally is the cause of a slow computer. Also, try and remove some unimportant things (i.e old document, Power Points, things of that sort) to an alternate hard drive or USB Storage Devise...that should help

This is Proview74. I recently bought a new computer and used a "secure delete" program to clean all files off the old Dell computer (4700). I still have the Operating System (XP Media Center Edition 2005) reinstallation DVD for the Dell 4700, which I tried to reinstall by inserting it into the cd drive and rebooting the unit. However, the screen asked me for a password which I cannot remember (from 2005) when I first bought the computer. In fact, I don't even remember using a password at the time.

Is there anyway to over-ride the password, or use a substitute password, to get the computer to accept the reinstallation disc? I tried pressing f12, got into the BIOS section, but I have to enter a password to change the password to a new one. I am at a loss, and if I can't get it reinstalled, a perfectly good computer will have to be scrapped. Would love to get it going so my grand kids could use it.

Appreciate any help to get this going. Thanks for your help.

A:Re-installing XP on Dell computer

We don't generally offer help with password issues here for obvious reasons but F2 should get you into BIOS where you'll be asked for a password. F12 simply shows you the boot menu so you can boot from the CD and I'm surprised if the password is necessary at that stage.

You could enter the Service Tag, which is printed somewhere on the case, into the Dell website and enquire whether they set a password and on satisfying them you were the purchaser, they should tell you but if you set it yourself and forgot it, you're lost. I have to say it would have been an unusual thing to do - do you have a recollection of doing it?

I had a virus and must have messed up my computer in trying to fix it. Now my computer won't boot. I can't get it to boot from the XP CD. In the set-up, boot sequence I set it only for the cd and I get "strike f1 to retry boot, F2 for setup". if I turn it off and on and hit f12 I get 5 choices; 1 normal, 2 ide cd-rom device, 3 system setup, 4 ide drive diagnostics, 5 boot to utility partition. None work. the diag says hd is fine. I'd like to reformat/reload xp on hard drive and can't. On another computer I can get the comuter to boot from the xp cd and it works

A:Dell XP computer won't boot

You can try resetting the BIOS to default settings...by temporarily removing the CMOS battery...and that might allow a boot.

What is the system model?

I have a dell computer running XP professional. A few days ago it died completely, my daughter said a few weeks before that it was acting funny. Like pop ups were occurring and web pages were redirecting.

A new power supply fixed the dying part of the problem. It booted fine after installing the new power supply but lots of little error pop ups were occurring. Tried to do liveupdate of symantec and it said it couldn't reach the server. Then tried going to the updates.microsoft site, symantec, and macafee sites .... they all were blocked saying the browser could not get to them.

Then I let "microsoft security essentials" install. It said there were several malware/spyware/trojan horses on the machine. After reboot it know goes through BIOS just fine but then goes to a blank screen. Doesn't look like it even is booting into the OS .....

I don't know what to do at this point ....If I don't here from some body in the next day on this forum I am going to go ahead and just wipe the drive and install XP professional again.

I think my Dell Vostro must have a proprietary block to cloning to a non-Dell machine. I have tried spotmau, Macrium,Aeomei, Microsoft and maybe another. I can get the clone to load on the new machines hard drive, but I cannot get it so I can access it. Is there any way to overcome this? I have tried it on an Asus and Sony computer.

A:Cloning a Dell Computer

you cannot use a clone from a dell computer to another. It violates manufacturers oem license from microsoft. besides different computer, different motherboard, different drivers. windows would have to be reinstalled if it was a legit transfer.

Does this happen after a certain amount of time? Or is it really just random?

Can you give examples as to what programs you are running when it happens?

One of my coworkers brought in one of her personal machines, which is completely new (still packaged up and everything); an HP ProDesk. After going through the initial setup and installing AVs, changing IE settings and all that good stuff, I ran Windows Update. For some reason, a Dell, Inc. update showed up.

Should there be any reason for this?

Thanks in advance.

A:Dell, Inc. Update on an HP computer??

Are there any Dell peripherals attached to the machine? I'm thinking something like a monitor, mouse or keyboard.

Follow the instructions here so we can help you better: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html

Are you lookng to add RAM or just replace it?

According to google, the Dell Dimension 4700 has DDR2 RAM at 400 MHz. Both links you posted have DDR2 RAM at faster speeds, so while you can add both of them, I believe, they'll still run at the slower speed unless you take out the older RAM.

I have a dell computer that keeps shutting down before it even has a chance to start up.
It just started shutting down every now and then. Now it won't even start up. It gets to the opening dell screen, then shuts down.
I noticed the cooling fan started to run really fast so I decided to checked the CPU and found that it gets hot in seconds after I push the power button. Could this be a bad CPU or mother board?

I am running windows XP sp2
Hyper thread cpu
The system is about three years old

A:My Dell computer will not start

Actually the cpu is probably the issue. Normally we would look at the heatsink fan but Dell uses a fan for case cooling and to cool the heatsink and it may be that fan also.
Can you get into the bios and see the temps and fan speed? Hard drives are also warrantied for 4 years but you really aren't getting far enough to have it be a bad hard drive.

Every time after I get the BSoD, and a message which tells me their is a problem with the ram. I read about this problem, and I have figured out that the install messed with the ram settings. I don't know how to fix it though. I can boot up with linux cd though. What should I do?

A:SP2 install on Dell computer

Attempting to install XP SP2 in a computer has no effect on how RAM modules function.

What is the model name and model number of that Dell, and how much RAM is installed?

Are you using an actual XP SP2 CD?

Have you deleted all current partitions, created a new C partition, formatted that new partition with the NTFS file system, and then attempted to install XP SP2?

Tryin to work on my wifes Dell Gx-280 computer. It has a Intel Pentium 4 - 2.8 Ghz cpu. Here's the problem. Left it on 1 night to run anti-virus scan & the next morning power light was yellow instead of green. Tried to reboot several times but power switch light only stand yellow instead of green w/ no HDD light activity. I did get it to turn green on 1 attempt & it started to boot but then just shut off. Thought it was power supply so odered 1 from Dell & replaced it. Did not solve problem. Put old power supply back in & tried again w/ same problem. Finally I did get it to boot up & got message sayin' last shut down was normal & due to a thermal event or something to that nature. Ran machine for several hours & shut it down & rebooted it several times sucessfully. I did notice that sometimes when it boots the cpu fan is runnin' slow but picks up speed as it has run for a bit. Other times it is runnin' like a jet airplane as soon as it starts to boot up & stays runnin' at the speed the whole time machine is on. Thought the boot up problem had magically fixed itself. Put it into stand-by mode yesterday & restarted it this morning w/ no problem. Ran machine for awile & then put back into stand-by mode & when I went to retart it suddenly back to same problem again. I thought I had finally got it to boot again because power switch light went green & HDD light came on but stayed on & did not flicker. ... Read more

new dell desktop computer
I have purchased a new Dell Inspiron (3847) desktop with windows 7 pro. In fact I have not even taken it out of the box yet.

It came with Mcafee Security Centre which Dell is apparently promoting. But, I might just forgo the Mcafee and install Avast Free Anti-virus, plus MBAM Free, and SuperAntispyware Free. I had Mcafee on a PC many years ago and I do not have anything good to remember about it.

What do you all think.

Thanks.

How far can you expand your average dell computer?

hey all, could someone tell me if i can change the motherboard in my factory dell vostro 410 desktop, so that i can replace it with a motherboard that is SLI enabled?

If so what motherboards should i be looking for, is there a specific one due to the size of the case?

Also, being a dell computer i realize your limited into what your changing, does that apply to the PSU and CPU?

Thank You, look forward to your replies

A:HELP: Expanding Dell Computer

The case is standard ATX size so a standard ATX motherboard will fit. Find one that is SLI enable. Since you are switching the motherboard out, why not build a PC from scratch? You'll have to look in the case but the PSU should be interchangeable.

I have a Dell XPS 410 that is 2 years old. I started getting blue screen errors and called Dell they said it was the hard drive. I replaced it and still kept getting the errors. When I called Dell again they said it was the mother board so I took it to Best Buy and they said it was the mother board. I had them replace it and have had it home for just a little over a week and today I got the blue screen again. It did a couple of restarts on its own and then today just the blue screen. Does anyone have any ideas on what else might be causing them?

A:Need to fix BIOS via DOS for Dell computer

Hi, and welcome to Techspot.
Your question is a little confusing, bios and dos are two completely different things...
Maybe you should read a little about BIOS on this website.
If you need to enter BIOS you probably have to press F2 when the DELL logo shows up right after you start your computer. You don't need any CDs or USB flash drives to enter BIOS.

Hey everyone!

First off hope everyone had a good crimbo!

and secondly I have a fujitsu siemens laptop which had vista pre-installed. I am looking to re-install it to start a fresh.
I have soooooo much data to back up and I dont fancy buying lots of blank discs or an external hard drive to back it all up.
Am I right in thinking i can create a fresh partition on my hard drive and move all of my data on to that, the format the original partition, install vista, and then transferr my stuff back over if i wanted to?

Thing is though when windows asks me to format will i be able to pick which partition or will it wipe the whole lot?

Any help would be appreciated!

If the space is to the right of your OS use the built in disk management if not then use a 3rd party app like parigon disk suite, and grow the OS partition
