So i tried reformatting my computer...and now i dont even have internet explorer

Q: So i tried reformatting my computer...and now i dont even have internet explorer

First of all, let me say that I am not good with computers. I just read about how to reformat on this site. Anyways:

So this computer is less than a month old. I had some problems with my game, where it would freeze for a split second every 10 seconds. I checked to make sure it wasnt a connection problem, and even in offline mode it happened. Well, i tried restoring, and i still had the problem. So anyways, i decided to reformat. I think this is where i mightv screwed up. I ordered this computer from cyberpowerpc.com. However, i used the Windows XP installation CD that came with my old dell. Anyways, i deleted my old partition, made a new one, and everything was going fine until it was setting up windows XP. It said "Some files are needed from the Windows XP CD-ROM" or something like that. I clicked OK, and nothing happend. At that point i noticed that I couldn't open or close my dvd rom drives. I pressed cancel, and it installed the rest of windows. It logged me on, but now i have the windows classic scheme, and i dont even ahve internet explorer or windows media player or anything. I dont even have the pictures for my user. I really am lost, and none of my cd drives work when i am logged on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: i forgot, now my first dvd drive wont even open/close even during the boot sequence....

A: So i tried reformatting my computer...and now i dont even have internet explorer

disc shouldn't be the matter, i was able to use my dell disc to put XP on my old old computer just fine.

Google has been redirecting, google images will only load a certain number of images and internet explorer opens randomly, when I do not even have it installed or use it. Also, phantom music/ads/speaking play when no programs or windows are open. I have run rkill, MalwareBytes and TDSS killer with no infected files being found. And that's where the extent of my knowledge runs out! You guys have helped me fix everything else, but now I finally need to post as I cannot finx this one based on other advice.
Much appreciated,
Cheers.

Title says it all. After a day or so of online time if I try to run internet explorer or openoffice or use cntrl alt delete nothing happened. The little "waiting" cursor appears for a few seconds, then nothing happens. Rebooting lets me run work normally.
I use Windows 7 and Microsoft security essentials.
I have a DDS log. I have the attachement, but didnt see where to post it.
When I ran GMER an error popped up, It said "C:/Windows/system32/config/system: The system can not find the file specified." Gmer would only scan "Services", "Registry", "Files", and "ADS". All the other options were graded out and could not be selected. When I hit the scan button with those options selected another error popped up: "C:/Windows/system32/config/system: The process could not access the file because it is used by another process." I bypassed the error message and a scan ran but "GMER hasn't found any system modifications."

Hello Everyone,

After wandering on the google high-lane for a few days i've decided to try my chances here in hopes of an answer.

My situation:
I have a set top box that boots into internet explorer as a shell. If you kill internet explorer it will immediately reboot. I use this to have internet on my TV, since I have no open internet feature on my PC and sometimes a laptop just does not cut it. What i get from time to time are the infamous:
"Internet explorer has stopped working"
> Check online for a solution and restart the program
> Restart the program

The reason as to why i get this error is known to me but i am not looking to resolve the issue.
What i want is simple, if internet explorer stops working, dont show me the error just restart.
Or even better kill yourself and let my shell reboot you.

After a lot of searching (and most of it goes about fixing the problem, which does not really interest me, as this is known to me.) i have not found a single clue if this is even possible. I tried installing a watchdog, but sadly most of the watchdogs just monitor the process list, if the watched process dies, the watchdog will restart it. So that is also not the answer to my problem.

I was not sure if posting it here is the right thread or if i have sound have posted on the OS board.
Guess that depends on the answer as well, if i can fix this using internet explorer options or OS options.

I really hope someone can help me out!
Looking forward to so... Read more

My kids' computer is a compaq presario running windows vista home premium. It is connected to a linksys wireless router which, in turn is connected to a telephony modem (internet/phone etc...). Also running off the router & modem is our machine (XP), a laptop (XP) and a HP wireless printer.

The Compaq (the kids machine) will not connect to the internet via Internet explorer. It had done before, but I cannot get it to do so again. This machine sees all of the other members of the network and is receiving a strong signal, but nevertheless, IE will not connect. The LAN status is connected at 100 Mbps.

I was on the phone with Comcast for 2 hours and we did the whole reset modem/router thing a few times, as well as checked all settings.

We also reset IE & I checked the posts here and followed all suggestions but cannot get their machine online.

I've looked through the forum and followed much, including PING command and trying to reset the winsock (requires "elevation?"). Still no luck

Help!!!

Hello,"Internet Explorer is using a proxy server on this computer to connect to the Internet." Hitman Pro gives me that message when I do a scan, and is unable to repair the problem. I did all steps suggested at this link, as that person's problem was very similar to mine:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic335743.html ("internet proxy?"). None of the procedures and suggestions contained at that link have worked. Also, Symantec's "Norton Power Eraser" reports two problems: m2wshlex.dll (shell extension) and deaddiskdoctor (directory).I have now done the steps at this link:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html ("Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help").I've pasted the DDS.txt file immediately after this, and attached the Attach.txt and Ark.txt files. My computer won't connect through the internet except with internet explorer,my tablet, cellphone, XBox, and wife's PC are all fine.

Ways I've tried to connect:
Steam, Google Chrome, Malewarebytes update, and AVG free (requires internet to install).

What I have tried:
Changing DNS settings in chrome, running Malwarebytes (No detections), AVG (couldn't install due to "no connection"), Avast (No results), tried installing Ad-Ware (Can't "connect"), and I tried the LAN settings (Detect settings and unchecking the proxy box).

Nothing has helped. Any ideas on what to try would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

Reformatted XP pro. It started up fine, but will not recognize the cable connection now. I know the connection is fine. We have 2 other computers on the wireless network.
Was not aware that all drivers needed to be saved beforehand, and so there is NOTHING left.
This is a HP dx5150 SFF, and was purchased refurbished. We have installed the chipset driver, the audio driver, CPU driver, modem driver, and network driver from the HP website. No luck.
Yellow ?'s show up by Ethernet controller, video controller, video controller VGA compatible, and M-systems Disc On Chip 2000.
It looks like everything got wiped out, including the Kaspersky Internet Security which was actually saved, but will not reload.
Sorry, I am totally incompetent. Can anyone assist?

I am running Windows XP Home SP2 with the latest updates on a Pentium 1.8 GHz Dell 2350. Recently, IE and Eudora quit working. (No new programs had been installed.) IE will not load any pages, it just freezes. Eudora reports an "unhandled exception" and exits. "My Computer" generally will not open, but occasionally after searching several minutes it will function perfectly with every disk/link opening instantly. (I can bypass the "My Computer" button with the "Run" command to instantly open any drive. Using this method, the Control Panel may still open slowly.) Using Task Manager, no process generally appears to be using a lot of CPU resources. Also, "My Computer" and Eudora function perfectly in Safe Mode.

I did run the Panda online scanner. After 6 hours, it reported 37 potential "viruses or spyware" but did not give an option to fix any. I neglected to save the log file at that time--sorry. Since then, I have downloaded and run the following antivirus/spyware detection programs without finding any problems other than tracking cookies (removed all cookies): SpyBot Search & Destroy, AVG Free 8.0 full scan, BitDefender 10 Antivirus full scan, the latest Windows malware removal tool, sfc\ scannow (did not run with XP CD in drive), and Windows Defender. I have also uninstalled IE, restarted, and then tried opening Eudora with no improvement. After that, I uninstalled Eudora, installed IE 7, and res... Read more

Yesterday I turned my computer on to see that it had a blue screen and was saying something like "Checksum error: SHLWAPI.dl not found" (this was right after I had downloaded the Windows Service Pack 3). I looked far and wide across the internet for a solution, but nothing worked, so I decided to reformat my entire computer using the Windows XP Reinstillation Disc. Now that everything has been cleaned and the computer has nothing on it, everytime my telephone rings, I'm kicked off the internet. I have DSL so it shouldn't be doing this. Any ideas on how I can easily fix this?
Thanks!

I just recently reformatted the HD on my other computer and for some reason I cannot detect internet. The disks that came with my computer do not contain a driver for the NIC, and I am pretty sure that the card is integrated into the motherboard, so a driver probably isn't needed. I always have trouble getting new computers to detect internet...does anyone have any ideas on how to get it to work?

A:Lost internet after reformatting...

Actually, a driver is needed, and it came on the MB CD. If you don't have the CD, go to the manufacturer's website and download the driver package. Look in Device Manager and see if the network card is listed with a yellow ?

Hi,

I have a Win XP 1.1hertz 512 ram with 40 gig hardrive. A few days ago I installed an additional 80 gig Maxtor drive, & everything had been working perfectly for a few days, but today I opened explorer to navagate to some files & it didnt display my D, E, & F dirve (CD burner, DVD burner, 80 ghig hardrive), yet it magically displays another drive labeled: DVD drive G:
The drives havent disappeared or stopped functioning, I can navaigate to them but i have to manually type in thier address in the explorer address bar.

IE: F:\Bobs files

If I open a program like MS Word, & try to open a file it wont list & let me access the D, E, F: drives. I dodnt know if this has anything to do with it, but I noticed when I installed the hardrive that my originall drive was a fat32 drive & the new one was an NTFS drive. Does anyone know what has happened or how I can fix this? Im a rookie at this stuff so anyone needs any info I listed my registry with a software called hijack this below:

A:Can't get into Internet explorer or my computer!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Please print out the instructions here (or save it in Notepad) so that you can follow along more easily.

Hiya

Are you still having this problem? If so, go to http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show other issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Hi and welcome. We've a couple points here. ComboFix is a tool that should only be run under the supervision of someone who has been trained in its use. Using it on your own can cause problems with your computer. Glad you held off.Next, McAfee is a program that doesn't play nice with other malware tools. You may want to uninstall and select another free one. Remind me for a list ,if you go there. But for now at least turn it off after updating and prior to runnung this scan. Turn back on after. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. Ok, so I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop with Windows Vista Basic. Yesterday I got a virus, so I was forced to reinstall Vista. Now Vista is reinstalled and the effects of the virus are all gone, however my laptop can't find any wireless networks, despite getting 5 bars with other laptops.

I checked my drivers, and my Ethernet Controller, Network Controller, and SM Controller all had yellow exclamation points next to them. It said something about Code 28. Anyway, I did a little research and found out that meant that my drivers weren't working properly. I downloaded a new Ethernet Controller driver and now the yellow exclamation point is gone and it's apparently working properly. However, I still can't find any networks, and I can't find any other drivers for a Network Controller and an SM Controller. I could really use some help, I'm not used to this stuff.

Hi everyone,

I would like to first off start and say thank you for taking your time to read this post and I hope I can explain everything, if there is any questions you may have please feel free to ask and I will try to answer them to the best of my ability.

Okay, I recently bought a new computer (Dell w/ Windows Vista). I have another Dell that I just reformatted w/ Windows XP on it. I took my old computer upstairs and put it into my room and left the other one downstairs. I hooked up our cable modem to the new computer by ethernet and it works great. Fast, the whole nine yards. Now I have my old computer upstairs that has JUST been reformatted, so everything is gone.

I would like to get internet to the computer upstairs. I figured, I would buy a wireless network adapter (USB) and a wireless router for downstairs. So, I went to BestBuy and bought both. Set up the wireless router, no problem. I also installed the adapter no problem. But it would not connect with the router. So after 8 hours with support phone calls I called it quits, returned everything and gave up, mad.

Now, I have looked into a couple things. Now I am reading things like I need to install new drivers to get my old internet connection back on the old computer because I reformatted? Is this true? Because on the wireless adapter it said I had a wireless VERY GOOD signal, but when I went to Internet Explorer it said unable to connect, ble ble ble.

Hi all, I have a dilemma with my wireless internet.

I have a D-link DI-524 router upstairs in my dad's office. Our Shaw cable modem is hooked up to it, and my dad's PC is hooked up to the DI-524 router via Ethernet. I have one PC downstairs in the basement connected to the internet via the D-Link DWL-122 Wireless Adapter. In addition, I have 2 MacBooks, and 2 iPhones that would access this internet network also.

Both PCs are running Windows XP Pro.

My problem is with the PC downstairs in the basement. About a year ago when I first got the router/adapter bundle, the connections were great. I opened up ports for my downloads, and I was getting exceptional speeds. However, problems with the connections starts to arise about 4 months ago. Downloads have slowed down... and I find that I often have to "repair" or unplug and replug the adapter to get a connection. My dad's PC was fine, and my Macbooks sometimes stalls. The downstairs PC was getting so slow and annoying, also for some strange reason, the USB adapter started to clash with my other USB devices. For example, when I plug in my camera or my external harddrive, the internet will fail, and the USB adapter will become unresponsive. So I reformatted it last week, hoping that would solve the problem.

The problem did not go away. At first, the USB adapter will still clash with other USB devices. I updated the adapter firmware, and moved the adapter and other devices to different ports, that ... Read more

So I reformatted my hard drive today and reinstalled Windows XP Professional version. I have a desktop tower, but I use a Netgear wireless adapter to connect to the Internet. I went to reinstall the program from the CD so I could connect to the internet, when a prompt came up saying that I had to download and install some update to my OS to install the software. To do that, I needed to connect to the internet. So, I took the desktop to a hard point and tried connecting it to the house router through an ethernet cable. However, the ethernet connection is not working either. After reading some similar problems, I went to Device Manager, and noticed that the devices: "Multimedia Audio Controller", "PCI Modem", and "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)" all have yellow "!"s next to them. I still cannot connect. Some help please?

Hi,

I have a Mesh PC (6 years old) that was running so slow that I decided to "clean start" using the Recovery CD that came with the PC. It has Windows XP SP2.

After the re-installation, my PC only shows the "1394 Connection", no Local Network, no other Network Adapter (besides the 1394).

Previously this computer was connected via cable modem and a router. The modem and the router work fine, because I have normal connection in my laptop and my xbox, which are connected to the same router.

I've searched a lot of forums and I've tried lots of different stuff (disconnect everything, reconnect again; ipconfig (nothing appears); netsh winlock ...) from suggestions to people with similar (but not the same) problem. Nothing worked.

I don't know what else to do. The only CD that came with the computer was the Recovery CD, which I thought it would have all the necessary drivers and etc. The modem doesn't have an installation CD. The router has one, but when I tried to see if I could find a solution with it, it told me I have no network adapter and it couldn't continue.

I can only imagine it is a software issue, because the modem and router work with the laptop and xbox.
I have only a basic knowledge of computers... Can anyone help? Please??
Thank you!

If you mean what I think you mean, you can restart Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox by doing this:
Close the window (click on the X in the upper right hand corner).
Click on the icon on your desktop or Start menu for the program you want to start.
Or click on Start and then run and type 'iexplore' or 'firefox' (without the quotes).

It is the only program in the add remove programs list that I do not have the option to remove. How remove this? Someone on this site suggested running opera and firefox. I am now running IE 7 and firefox. I use favorites a lot and click on a lot of links that IE doesnt allow for some reason. I also watch the stock market closely so I am looking for a browser that would work well with alot of refreshing. Thank you in advance for your help. Greatly appreciated.

A:Why cant I remove internet explorer from my computer?

IE is integrated with Windows, you cannot remove it. It is needed for various functions of Windows itself.

Opera is a very safe browser. Actually, there are fewer exploits found in Opera compared to even Firefox. You can use Opera or Firefox, both are great browsers. One advantage of using Firefox is that you can download addons of many types.

Hello, I have had great help before on here and am hoping someone can help me again. I don't know what is happening to my computer but ever since IE8 replaced IE7 as an update I have had all kinds of problems in different areas. I am running Windows XP.
1. I cannot open Internet Options from the Control Panel
2. I am getting lots of Microsoft error messages
3. I can't download anything (I can't download TSG SysInfo as suggested either)
4. I am having problems uninstalling programmes
5. I can't uninstall IE8 to revert back to IE7
I have done all the scans and have McAfee security. I have turned the Firewall off. It is taking up so much time and I don't seem to be getting anywhere. None of the suggested fixes from anywhere I have looked are working.
If anyone can help I would be so grateful. Thanks. Margaret

I have a dell desktop and currently running windows 7. Also I am using AVG for protection. For some reason I cannot run regularer internet explorer (9) i can only use the 64 bit version. When I try to use the regularer version everytime I try to open it, i get a window that says it has stopped working and must close, it will do this nonstop and the only way it will go away is when I close it using task manager. I have tried the microsoft fix for this and it worked for half of a day, and now its back to doing the same thing again. On top of that the computer is very slow and I get this white screen whenever I move the screen, however I think that is a hardware issue. Attached you will find my logs. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there,

I have noticed that after I am running internet explorer, my computer will freeze up and the only way I can fix it is by rebooting the machine. This is becoming frustrating and it is affecting my ability to do any work done because we use Lawson for work and it only runs on internet explorer. I do not have this issue with google chrome so I am not sure what is causing this. Sometime I can use the internet explorer for a while before it starts freezing up and sometimes it would happen just after i run it for few minutes. Not really sure what is going on. I use AVG antivirus and have disabled add-ons and have done malware scan but did not help. Anybody have suggestion? I would appreciate it very much. Thanks.

A:Internet Explorer freezing up computer

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
I hate to be a drag on security choices but AVG is not very internet explorer friendly,
It often clashes with internet explorer's security features,
Best I can say is to test for a while without it,
And no disabling AVG will not be good enough,
It must be thoroughly removed,
Uninstall AVG | AVG

Use free MSE for a day or two and test or Panda ?

I am having problems with flash player it will not install correctly. Each time I download it it says its been installed but when I go back to a website that uses it it wont work. This is why I think there is something wrong with internet explorer because I also use google chrome and the flash player works fine their but not for internet explorer 9.

When I try to go and remove internet explorer 9 in the add and remove programs in the control panel it is not there. I dont know what to do. If anyone can help I thank you in advance.

P'S. this a Windows 7 operating system

A:I am not able to uninstall internet explorer 9 off my computer

If you purchased your computer recently with Windows 7 already installed, you probably can't roll back from IE 9 to IE 8. You can't completely uninstall IE from any computer.

Chrome uses its own Flash engine, so whatever you install or uninstall doesn't affect it.

Which version of IE are you opening, 32-bit or 64-bit? Which version of Flash did you install?

Hi, my problem is that i cannot get on internet explorer or my computer or the control panel or anything related to my computer without it saying that there has been an error and it asks me if i want to send a report or dont send. I can get on to AIM still though, so i have an internet connection. I just need help fast because its really bad when i cant get into my computer and the c: drive and all that, but it will let me get on it in safe mode. i would send you a hijack log but i dont know how to get into it cause it wont let me. Plzzz help, thanks

A:Can't get into Internet explorer or my computer! (From XP forum)

Sounds like you have a corrupt Browser Helper Object, or Toolbar, see if you can load your control panel in safe mode, and then go into "add/remove programs" and uninstall any toolbar's or anything else suspicious from your add/remove list. This may help resolve your issue, however, you should post a hijackthis log. So that we can have a better idea of whats going on with your system.

Hi there,

For the last few months my computer stalls every so often when I'm in Internet Explorer - hitting CTRL + ALT + DEL doesn't quit the programme. Looking at processes when CRTL + ALT + DEL finally opens, iexplore.exe seems to be taking up tons of memory each time.

I've run virus scans and nothing comes up.

Can anyone help?

All the best,

A:Computer stalls in Internet Explorer

Use firefox instead. Not only is it much better (In my opinion) that IE, but far more stable. If firefox also crashes aswell then try other browers such as Opera or Chrome (very good browser from google).

If they to crash we have another issue to deal with.

about two days ago I got a virus. I restarted, ran anti Malware Bytes, Symantec and I believe I got all the viruse(s) off the computer. However I now have a problem, where I click on internet explorer. When I do thi s it, about 70% of the time it does nothing. The bar at the bottom does not show loading or anything. I than have to go to task manager and end task. The other 30% of the time it loads and everything and seems normal. I go to watch youtube or listen to music online and the music begins to loop and the computer freezes except the mouse. I can still do control-alt-delete, but then that freezes too, and all I can do is move the mouse. So I have to push the power button.

bump as I am afraid not many people have read it.===========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. Okay, the system we use for internet use at our home is slightly unusual. We never seem to be able to get the router working properly for more than a few weeks so basically what we do is this:
1. a user finishes with the internet and unplugs his/her computer's ethernet cable which is connected to the modem.
2. the next user plugs their computer into the cable and uses the internet.

this has worked fine until now. I just reformatted the hard drive to clean it up a bit but now I can't remember how to get the internet going again. In "network connections" I've tried all the set up a connection wizards and I've tried the disks but everything just tells me that the broadband connection is ready for use. I tried the disk that came with the modem and it said I did not have an ethernet card and then it said it couldn't connect with the modem.

In "network connections" on this current computer I am using where the internet works, the connection is listed under "LAN and High Speed Internet" - how can I set up a similar connection on the other computer?

Any ideas?

A:Cannot connect to internet via LAN after reformatting hard drive

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

Let's see this as well.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

This problem has definitely got me stumped.

I have a PC running Win XP 2002 which I have used for 3 years without problem. I reformatted the HD and reinstalled the OS because of slow operation and errors. But I cannot connect to the internet (I have a ethernet cable connection to a router)

When I go to Network Connections there is no 'LAN or HIgh Speed Internet' display. When I try to instal any network drivers an error message appears saying there are 'no network adapters'.

In the Device Manager, under network adapters, there are listed there 'Direct Parallel and few items entitled 'WAN Miniport', but nothing like a ' Network Connection' adapter like I would have imagined.

The PC was built by someone I now cannot contact. I have a CD with drivers for the motherboard - Jetway "Magic Install" S/N 020611B8, but nothing refers directly to networking.

I have run msinfo32.exe and have a screed of data from there but unsure which parts would be of use to anyone helping me, so if I need to post some, let me know please.

Would appreciate any help or insight to help me solve this problem. I am assuming that because I could previously access internet, all the hardware is there, it just needs a correct driver or something to persuade the thing to cooperate.

Thanks.

I'm trying to help a relative fix their computer after getting several viruses on it. We ended up reformatting the hard drive. Everything appears to be operating except I cannot connect to the internet. At first the Local Area Connect was gone and all that appreared was the 1394 connection. I then purchased a new ethernet adapter and install it.

The installation appears to work but still no connect. Status indicates its sending packets, but not recieving any.

I could use some help trying to get this fixed, thanks!

A:Cannot connect to internet after reformatting hard drive

If the computer has an internal Ethernet Adapter, make sure you install all the drivers. These can be found at the PC manufacturer's website. You want to install all the relevant drivers including Chipset, Video, Sound, Network, etc.

Only once out of 7-10 times will it start up normally. I have no idea what this is all about or how to find out. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have a computer with windows xp professional Edition which was infected with a rogue virus. I was able to remove this virus, however it infected the registry. All the periferals were disabled included the cd-rom, network drivers, processor drivers. I ended up deciding to reformat the computer. It has raid 0, with 2 hard drives.

When I formated it I got a BSOD 0x0000007b. I put in the raid controller driver on a floppy drive. I was looking online for any solution to this problem, I found a few but nothing that would help me resolve the problem.

This is a 7 year old computer but I'm used to it and do not want to buy a new computer.

I am hoping someone has experienced a similar problem and can tell me how to fix it

I ran a chkdsk on the hard drive, they were fine.

How do I reformat my HP PC?
The model is dx5150.

I heard about various methods such as using F10 when in the blue HP screen during startup to reformat it. But it doesn't work for me 'cause I don't have a blue HP screen.

By the way, I don't have a Windows XP CD or any boot disks or such.
Is there anyway to reformat without an XP CD?

A:Reformatting the Computer

Well you need to have some kind of boot disc whether it be a cd or a floppy. You can use DBAN put it on a floppy and wipe the drive that way. And if you plan on using the computer again you need to have an OS disc to do a reinstall otherwise it is useless without an OS.

I no doubt have viruses/malware and due to a failed reformat a long time ago, their is more than one operating system on my comp, and I just want to kill 2 birds with one stone and just reformat it and get it done with.

However, I have a few questions.

1) I don't have any of the CD's that came with the computer. If I go buy an XP cd, for all the other software (Microsoft Word, etc), how do I transfer it back to the comp without having to go buy it again to install it?

2) Is it possible that I transfer the viruses/malware when I put back the file I save after it reformats?

3) Any simplistic reformatting guides out there? I'm hardly computer illiterate, but I'm no technician...

A:About reformatting my XP computer...

Is your computer a brand name? There can be specific steps to take and you can often buy replacement recovery or reinstall disks for less than 20.00

List the brand model and service tag/ part number if any or describe the mainboard model and revision which is often a splash screen early in the boot process and is also written on the motherboard.

So I'm going to help a friend reformat and old computer and put XP on it......
I don't know if formatting old computers with XP is safe? She says its pretty old, like '99 and she got it for free from a friend for work (she can't afford anything else right now)
So it's not like we can go out and buy a bunch of stuff for it....I think it's running on Windows 98 & I know nothing about the drivers and I know she doesn't have any CD's for the drivers....

SO any advice on how to go about doing this would be awesome.
Thanks!

A:Reformatting an old computer...

I would have serious doubts about a '99 PC being able to run XP.

You really need about a 500 MHz CPU and 256 MB of RAM to make it run in a useable manner. Do you have that on the old PC?

Apart from that you just put the XP CD in the drive and let the PC boot from it, following the menu's. Remember it has to be a copy of XP that is not in use on any PC and was never supplied "with a PC", or the operating system may refuse to activate and lock you out.

1 licence per PC.

Then you need to know the make and model of PC or the make and model of the motherboard so you can get the correct XP drivers from the makers website (if any were ever released, given it's an old PC)

Okayzzz

So I reformatted my computer (from CD)... I had 2 problems DURING reinstall-ation

1- missing duser.dll file (so I skipped it)
2- when it was "updating" for some fun reason it said I had some setup something unabled....
So now I'm trying to connect to the internet and no luck.... I installed Mozilla from a USB... IE7 and Mozilla exist but neither connects....

I went to control panel -> Network Connections -> Add New Connection -> Get error "The New Connection Wizard was unable to open the following location on your machine: C:\Program Files\Online Services"

I can reinstall windows again but it asks if I should update (recommended) but I can't even connect to the net... and YES the internet is connected to the other computer and the Ethenet is green - the plugs are working so is the machine
Anywayz I did add Duser.dll to my other computer (in the system32 folder) - but that's still not giving it the ability to go onto the internet.... still same error... in a sense the computer looks screwed but I need to somehow get onto the net so that I can reinstall windows with the updates and such

A:Reformatting My Computer

Try reinstalling it again, and make sure the CD your using is clean. If theres dirt or a scratch over a certain part of the CD, whatever file was there, the setup will skip. If you get the same error but your cd doesn't have any scratches on it, than it's something else. Try reinstalling it, that would be your best bet right now.

Am currently writing this using my laptop computer. I need help in formatting my desktop pc. It runs Windows Vista Home Basic, and as you know the *restore to factory* recovery info is contained on the hard drive(which I cannot access) Is there any other way I can format it?

Here is the problem with the other computer....
I push the *power* button to boot up computer but it takes 20 minutes to an hour to boot to the desktop...in process I see no *logo* screen, so cannot tap F8 to gain access to the advanced boot menu screen. Then suddenly it boots to the desktop. I can acccess anything ON the desktop but cannot access IE, nor will Add/Remove programs work. I click to uninstall a program, and it says *its working* but it basically freezes and doesnt uninstall anything, AND doesn't really do anything. I had to use ctrl/alt/del to shut it down. Restart does not work, same problem with booting.

Bad me, I had loaned the computer to a friend for a few months while I was preparing to move, and moving as well. I just got the computer back last week. YESTERDAY my friend tells me the pc has been *misbehaving* for about 2 months and never before had any problems while in my home. I know, never loan computer to *friend*...but lesson learned.

I really need to know how to format. Am wondering if I should create a boot disk for it from this computer and then try that.....but will wait for your advice.

PS: I have been waiting for the computer to reboot now for about 1.5 hours... Read more

what are you running
video card
cpu
m/board
ram
power supply
brand
wattage

check the listings in the bios for voltages and tempretures and post them

because of it being moved something could have worked loose check the connections
in the bios disable the the gui[logo]
try a cmos reset
turn the computer off
remove the power lead from the back
take the side off
remove the cmos battery
move the cmos jumper from pins 1 and 2 to pin 2 and 3 and the back to pins 1 and 2
reinsert the battery
put the side on
replug in the power lead
boot the computer

there can be 2 solder points you touch with a screwdriver
2 pins you touch with a screwdriver or use a jumper
a cmos clear switch or button

to restore to factory you usually put in the recovery disk and hit one of the F keys as it is booting up
then the recovery cd and the recovery partition work in conjunction with one another to impliment the restore
there will be a diagram and instructions in your manual

then see if you can get safe mode[low resolution mode]

Are you just looking to format or format/reinstall windows? The easiest way to do it is just insert your recovery discs, or other windows installation disc, and go forwards as if you were going to install windows.Microsoft provides a guide to do so http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978307When you get to the point where it tells you that it is checking the drive you can eject the disc and shutdown the machine, or go through with the install if that was the plan. There are other programs to format as well, but if you were going to reinstall windows this is the easiest way.

Hello,

I would like to reformat my computer or set it back to the original settings. I cannot find the windows xp installation cd / boot disk.

I brought the computer legally so I have no idea why I didn't get them, I have all the other details of purchase and stuff.

I remember being asked to make a disk when I first switched on the computer but this was my first computer so I didn't have any disks or understand what it was doing.

Is there anyway I can reformat my computer or reset the settings?

This is a huge thread. I had no idea what forum to put this under, but I don't think it should have to go anywhere else other than here. This is a question about reformatting my computer, with no real full answers.

I have really started to notice how slow my computer has become, so I have decided to reformat the computer. Thing is, I am not going to just put back the back-up file, and I am not wanting to lose everything. Thanks to a second hard drive, I have decided to try and go through everything we need and put it on there manually, so to not include what I don't want. I just wanted to know, what do you think I should try and save from this reformat of a computer?

My list:
Program files (the instillation file)
Start-up files / 'All Programs' (much the same as ^)
Browser information (bookmarks, settings, saved passwords, forms (anything else?))
Bits of set up information (internet connection, drivers (must check my CD collection))
My document files (for all users) / Files stored on c drive (my folder, and everyone elses)
Documents and settings (go through them and have a look, not forgetting limewire shared downloads)
And your suggestions and reminders

Before doing any of this, I will have to create a few back-up files on DVD's just in case. I have not gone through with it yet, but DriveImage XML seems to be my best option so far. After that is done, I will get onto doing this eventually.
What do you think I could be missing?

A:Reformatting Computer - No Cd

by law your computer maker must furnish you a way to reinstall, sometimes it's a hidden partition on your hard drive, others even have you burn the cd's, if you neglect to do this or lose the manual telling you how to reinstall, companies will send you a reinstall package for a small fee, the important thing is your certificate of authenticty where you have a valid number.

Hi. Recently I had some trojan rootkit hit my computer, and decided maybe it'd be best if I reformat it and re-install windows. Catch is, I'm not really good with computers and don't really know how to do this.

It's a dell laptop, and I have windows XP running on it. Still have most of, if not all, the original cds that came with it when I purchased it. What I'm wondering is how hard this is to do? Could I risk wrecking more than I do good by attempting this when I don't really know what I'm doing?

Let me know if your need to know anything else, like what model and other stuff, and I'll get back with it. Any help'd be appreciated, thanks.

A:Reformatting My Computer

Hello tofte

I have a fairly standard procedure that I follow, after backing up what data I can safely save and then restoring the computer
I apply any driver updates that seem necessary, you have to go to your model's web page and compare dates, if you see newer drivers, it's best to load/update them. Next I clean the computer of useless crud and adware installed by the manufacturer. Same thing for something like norton's trial subscription, there's a special uninstaller for that.

Next I will apply the latest service pack, having the latest drivers and no security software to interfer

Then I load my security software

Last I connect to the internet

This is a pain but I believe it to be the safest approach

In your log I noticed you were running norton's and PrevxCSI, and teatimer, avoid any combination of security software that
might conflict

I've just set up a new computer in the office (actually it's about 18 months old but been sitting in its box all this time). We have a small office network (peer to peer) which was no problem to set up, the computer connects directly to the internet over this network. Each computer has its own IP address and are connected through an ethernet switch. The ADSL router is connected to the same ethernet switch. We have no problems with this set up on any other of the computers in the office, however the new machine (running IE 6 on XP Pro) takes an age to download pages (up to five minutes per page), other sofware is fine. Can anyone help with this. I've attached a Hijack this report in case this helps.

A:Internet Explorer running very slow on new computer

The first thing I would do is upgrade the XP PC to IE8 and see if there is any improvement. Don't go up to IE9 as that is not compatible with WinXP.
