Computer locking up when visiting certain sites

Q: Computer locking up when visiting certain sites

Hi all. Ive been battling this issue for a few days now. whenever i visit sites such as myspace or espn.com, when im either searching around on the sites my computer will lock up. i can hear it processing information as if it were getting sent massive amounts of information, yet when i check the sites on another computer in my house i dont have these issues. i tried disabling javascript and it worked for part of the problem, but when i started to search the website further, i encountered the issue again. This occurs with both internet explorer and firefox, and my flashplayer and windows media player are both updated. ive searched my computer with spybot and adaware.

Try reseting you security permissions. Goto tool > internet options > security tab. Click on default level, then set it to low hit apply, then move it right back to medium and hit apply. This will put it back to microsoft recommended settings. let us know if that works.

I need some help--I believe my son 12 year old son is visiting inappropriate website while we are at work. At the end of the night I clean out the temporary internet folder to free up space on the computer and last night I was just scan the folder and found all kinds of porn websites!! So I clean it out and when I logged on this evening the sites he normally visits are there but so where other porn sites.

Tell if Im wrong but is it true that every website you visit is recorded in the temp internet folder? and so popups get space there and when those cookies automatically go there is the computer is just left on which is what he is trying to tell me.

So is there another way to find out a list of websites that have been visited.

I really need to get these questions asked.

Thanks

The other day I was just following some links to a couple of sites, one was free6.com and the other nudeamateurhoes.com and now I have a weird icon on my taskbar. The icon itself says curse when moused over but has no way to exit the icon like the others on my task-bar.

Anyone every experience this problem and is it related to the sites or did I get it some other way.

Btw I did manage to find it and it in my programs folder and it is called curse.exe but when I try to delete it I am told I dont have access rights or something like that to delete this file.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Okay, sometimes when I go to websites it comes up with "internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. " that tells me to report the error. It just started doing this 2 days ago. So here is my HJT log my friend told me to post somewhere.

Hi Folks,

My computer has been taken over by a virus and I am now only able to visit certain websites that require a password to enter. (facebook, mobileme, banking, etc). Cannot browse general websites (google, msn, windows, etc.). This ocurred on Dec 31st about 2:11PM as I tried to install a program that scanned OK with Norton AV. I then downloaded Twister Anti-Trojan and scanned the file to find out that it was infected with Trojan.Agent.dsci.ynkb. I have tried the Windows Malware Removal and it didn't correct my problem. I cannot find any information about this trojan on the web. Norton AV did give me alerts after the fact stating that conhost.exe was blocked from download by hxxp://4kversions.biz/gsver/gsver.php?sft=master-keystroke-logger-10.11.01&idm=800023

I have unplugged my connection to the internet until I can resolve this.

I have scanned my computer and have attached the files as requested. Any assistance will be appreciated. PS - I am on a different CPU to enter in this request.

My computer has the preloaded restore information (windows) on the D: drive of this computer.
Thanks Gerard

Hi Folks,

I'm at the end of my technical capability here and need some help. Basically, the title says it all - my browser window crashes intermittantly - the commonality I've noticed between the sites it crashes on is that they have Google ads. I know some virus/spyware can latch onto specific sites, so I try all the tools I can get, with no success in either identifying the problem or correcting it. I used

-Bitdefender
-Ad-aware
-Trendmicro
-Spybot S&D

Hello,

I've recently discovered a problem with my computer. After visiting certain sites and clicking on a second link on that site, both Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer will crash. So far, I have found this problem corresponds to two different sites, Lords of Pain (Wrestling News Site) and [email protected] (School Site). I was going to post this in the Malware Removal forum, but then I saw this topic in the forum. I also have noticed that the problem does not occur if I use Google Chrome, but I would much rather use Mozilla Firefox. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello BrianJBustos,I see that you have an HJT log posted here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/211124/computer-running-slow-browsers-crashing-ff-ie/ We do not allow more than one topic for the same computer and the same issue as this causes confusion, and in this case may make the disinfection process more difficult. This leaves you with a choice:1) Have this thread reopened and the HiJack This log topic deletedOR2) Keep this thread closed and wait for assistance in the HiJack This log forum. Please note that that forum is VERY busy. Please send a Private Message indicating your choice.Assuming you wish assistance in the HiJack This forum, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. Hello,

I have Windows XP Pro SP2.
I have run a complete system scan with Avast, Registry Mechanic, Ad-Aware, and superantispyware with no luck.

As the title states when I startup and log in, iexplore.exe is running in the background and sucks up a fair amount of my CPU.
I watch the Avast Web Shield and it shows me ie hitting a bunch of sites I have never been to before, mostly TV sites. I can also here the clicking links sound in my speakers and occasionally some noises when it hits a site with audio.
Once I just kill iexplore.exe in the task manager everything goes back to normal.

I'm not sure how it all started, but I initially noticed it because the task manager was disabled from my account! I figured out how to re-enable it, but now I'm stuck with this thing...

Your help is greatly appreciated,

Neil.

A:Iexplore.exe Runs In Background On Startup And Starts Visiting Sites

Hello NeilH and welcome to BC I see that you ran registry mechanic. The writers of registry tools don't know what specifically you have on your system, and if you don't know what you are doing, you can create real havoc with your computer or programs. One of the most important things to do when changing things in the registry is to back it up so you can reverse it if necessary. I completely hosed my Adobe products by using a registry cleaner. Fortunately, I was able to reverse what I'd done because I'd backed it up.-------It would be helpful if you posted the log from SUPERAntiSpyware. Did you run it in Safe Mode? Please indicate whether it was safe mode or normal mode when you post the log. In order to find the log double-click the SUPERAntispyware icon on your desktop.o Click Preferences. Click the Statistics/Logs tab.o Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log and choose the appropriate date.o It will open in your default text editor (such as Notepad/Wordpad).o Please highlight everything in the notepad, then right-click and choose copy.? Click close and close again to exit the program. Please post the log in your next reply.Orange Blossom

I'm not sure if I have a virus on my laptop or if there is something else wrong with my laptop, a Toshiba running Vista. I noticed a couple days ago that when I would get on the internet, I could only get about five pages in before it would completely lock up, with not even being able to get into Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart. I would restart, it would bring up the "Windows did not shut down properly, do you wanna start in safe mood, etc... menu." I would try to start normally and same thing would happen. I ran numerous scans, Malware Antibytes, Super Antispyware, and it came up with a couple Trojans and I deleted them but the problem still happened. Then I noticed that it also was locking up when I would just be opening files or folders on the laptop, not just the internet. Then I would start getting blue screens, computer would restart and the cycle would repeat. I am not getting any bad reports from Malware or Super antispyware but the problem is persisting. Not sure if my laptop is just crapping out or if it's something else. I am writing this in safe mode with networking because the first time I tried to write it, in regular mode, the laptop locked up. It seems to be working ok in safe mode. Any help would be great!!! Thank you!

I have Windows ME. After I get off the internet, and leave my computer up, it will lock up/freeze on the desktop. I have to do a hard shut down (control/alt/delete doesn't touch it). Also my computer seems to be running slower than usual.

I have bit defender for a virus scanner/fire wall, I downloaded all the micro soft security updates, and have put on spybot S&D and ad-aware. However since yesterday ad-aware quits responding showing between 4 and 11 critical items that I can't get to in order to delete them. Spybot is still running ok and knocked off a 4 things on the last scan. I have rebooted, and ran a hijackthis log. Can anyone see if there is something causing a problem that the other systems are missing? Thanks in advance

Hi, Did you disable System Restore? Your scans may be detecting files in the RESTOR_ area...which they cannot fix. Turning off System Restore is neccessary so that you can remove all the infected files, malware etc from your Restore Points...disabling System Restore directions/info here:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...2001012513122239?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

After things are cleaned up, you can create a new Restore Point. If you did do this already looks like I will not be able to help you....the log is fine.

Hi all,

First post bc I can't find a good answer to this question anywhere.

I play guitar and as such, I frequently visit www.ultimate-guitar.com. For the past few months, whenever I visit the site, there is a good chance of my computer spontaneously just shutting down. It doesn't happen every time, but it happens a good portion of the time that I go to the site, and it only ever happens on that site.

I'm currently running 64-bit Vista Home Premium. This happens on both Chrome and Firefox.

So today I logged on to wikipedia only to see the sopa blackout message. within two minutes my firewalls detected numerous incoming and outgoing connections. then my desktop froze followed by all commands. I then turned my computer off. waited. then turned it back on. after going to the black xp screen it reboots to the "we apologize for the inconveinice but windows.." last known config-reboots to the we apologize screen. start normal-same thing. safe mode works. I ran malwarebytes in safe mode and it found the following threats:
trojan.winlock
pup.removeWGA
exploit.drop.7

after scan and necessary reboot, my computer gets caught in the restart loop with no way to start windows except choosing safemode or safemode with networking. and the threats keep reappearing. they will not go away!

Over the last few days, any time I try to visit youtube my computer completely freezes.  The mouse doesn't move, I can't push ctrl+alt+del, nothing at all works.  The screen just freezes while the page is loading.  The computer doesn't seem to be busy working when it freezes.  It seems to just stop completely.  I do not have this problem with any other websites.  I have scanned for viruses with Spybot and Malwarebytes.  I downloaded Ccleaner and used that too, as I thought it might be some sort of registry error.  No issues have been found.  There are no other sypmtoms of problems with the computer.  It is not running slowly.  Everything seems normal except for youtube.

I am using Firefox 20.0..1  There are no strange add ons or toolbars that I use.  I use Windows 7.  Any ideas what might be causing the problem?

A:Visiting youtube causes computer to freeze completely

I did a little more experimenting, and discovered that the problem only seems to be when using firefox.  Chrome and Internet explorer load the page.  I did, however notice that the Samsung ad at the top of youtube had an error loading.  The problem with Firefox seems to occur at the moment the Samsung ad finishes loading.  Perhaps it is related specifically to that.

Hi,

I need your help. My website "http://www.how-to-manifest-your-desires.com/" is listed by Google as a dangerous site that may harm your computer. The problem is that I don't know how to fix the problem. I have looked through the code to see any suspicious code but cannot see anything suspicious.

I'd appreciate if someone perhaps has experience with this sort of thing. See warning message below!

Thanks,
Jimmy

(not sure if i put this in the correct section sorry)

Im with BT Broadband at the moment, earlier today there was a new update, im guessing for the router, so i downloaded it.

Since then i have been getting the above warning on certain sites i try to enter which i have been on before with no problems (for instance, the BBC website).

Is this just coincidence or did the update do this?
... and if so, does anyone know how i got about un-installing the update?

Thanks.

My father in law has quite a mess on his pc. I know there are several viruses and he has installed a program called TrustedAntiVirus. I can't access the Control Panel, no icon anywhere. Can't even reset the clock, I get an error stating "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions on this computer. Please contact your system administrator".

He has Norton 360 installed but it wouldn't run until I turned off some startup items in msconfig. I'm including a HijackThis log and Kapersky log. Thanks in advance for any help.

I have an infected laptop running XP Pro SP3. It had Spyware Protect 2009 on it but I was able to stop the sysguard.exe process and delete sysguard.exe from the Windows subdirectory and from the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\....\Run registry hive. There is still at least one other major problem. IE 7 is redirected to display "internet explorer warning visiting this web site may harm your computer" most of the time. I can get to google sometimes and even search something but when I try to follow a link - I get the redirection message. It also prevents me from running a system restore and most of the scanning software such as malwarebytes, SDfix and several others. I was able to run HijackThis but when I tried to post the report, it redirected me again so I saved the log file to a thumbdrive and logged onto an uninfected computer to post this.

I'm attaching the log file.

I downloaded a re-direct anti-virus program.
I was able to kill it with RKill, but there are still some lingering issues going on.
When I try to connect to the internet via Google.com I get this message "Internet Explorer Warning - visiting this web site may harm your computer!"
I have run Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials.
They have removed numerous Trojans etc, but I still get the Internet Explorer Warning - visiting this web site may harm your computer!
When I tried running HIJackThis, I get a message "For some reason system denied write access to the Hosts file...."

Any clue how bad it really is?

Thanks,

We just started having this problem today at one of our computers at work, we run on Windows XP. Every time I navigate to a new web page (even here), I get a pop up warning:

Internet Explorer Warning - visiting this web site may harm your computer!

Most likely causes:
The website contains exploits that can launch a malicious code on your computer
Suspicious network activity detected
There might be an active spyware running on your computer

What you can try:
Activate Antivirus 360 for secure Internet surfing (Recommended).
Check your computer for viruses and malware.
More information

Can you please help me get rid of this? I have tried to attach the 2 things that came up with the DDS

Hi, for the past while I've been having some problems with my computer locking up. It seems like it only locks up while playing sound of some sort (ie. Winamp, or a game). Lately it's been really bad while playing Tiger Woods Golf (locks up 3-5 times per night usually).

This isn't a static problem. By that I mean that it's not everytime I start a program or play a certain file. Tiger Woods will run for a few hours without locking up and then next time it might lock up after 10 mins of play, same with Winamp.

Description of problem: System completely locks up and sound seems to be playing in a continuous short loop (1 sec or less looping back on itself).

System Info (not fully complete but ask away if I'm missing anything relevant):
Gateway System
AMD Athalon 800Mhz
Sounblaster PCI 128D
GeForce2 TI 64MB
200W PS
Windows 98SE
640MB Ram
DirectX 9.0 currently running but had the same problems in DX8 as well.
Not sure on motherboard atm I will have to look for the information on the board itself later, and try to figure out how to determine the make and model of it from there.
Please feel free to ask more about my system if needed.

I'm tearing my hair out! Every so often, the mouse and keyboard won't do anything except move the pointer around. I can't select, click or type anything. The only way to carry on is to hit the power switch!
Anti-virus, Spybot, AVG etc don'tprovide any clues as to what's wrong, and every time I try to use diagnostic software such as SiSoft Sandra or PC Wizard, the mouse and keyboard lock up, and I stare at the hourglass until I power the pc off. I can't use it to find out what's wrong!
The active scan you recommend in the 5 steps produced a report which iI have attatched, along with the HJT logs.

So my mom was on Best Buy.com at the legit website and a popup/scam attempt popped up, she called me to come look at it and its one that I have never seen before.

There was a popup from chrome (or designed to look like the one from chrome) that was warning about the computer being infected blah blah and to call a number for service to take control and fix the computer (lol no thanks) but the interesting part is it completely locked up the computer and wouldn't allow me to close chrome or take any other action.  I ctrl+alt deleted to shut down chrome and ran a scan on her computers mcaffe security program which came back clear ( the comp is like 2 days old).

Just wondering if anyone else has encountered this particular scam or (if by some small chance) the newer versions of mcaffee actually have a feature to lock the computer like this to prevent you from causing further harm?  I mean Im like 99% it was a clever scam and complete bs but was looking to see if anyone else has run into this dilemma.

I've had a problem with my computer for the past month. The computer inevitably locks up after using internet explorer or Firefox for any significant length of time. It doesn't completely freeze up, because you can still use the mouse, however at that point, no directories, programs, or web browsers will open up. After turning the computer on and loading windows, I sometimes get an error message that states: ctfmon.exe - Application Error, The application failed to initialze properly. I ran Malwarebytes and it found one exploit, which I deleted. I'm using Windows XP. How should I proceed to fix this?

Thanks for your help,
Jason

A:Computer is locking up

strange. Try to make full scan for viruses from your antivirus. Also check event viewer for details about that error.
P.S. there's always trouble with XP. I would suggest to go with more stable & secured OS as Windows 7.

A:Please help, computer locking up

Hi Mack V,

The only thing in the log I could see posing as a potential problem would be Limewire.

Everything else looks okay.

How much RAM do you have?
When was the last time you did some routine maintenance on your system?
(Like a Disk Cleanup, Disk Defrag, emptying the Temp folder)

A:computer keeps locking up?

Hi -

Make sure video drivers are updated. Go directly to device manufacturer's site, e.g., NVIDIA, ATI, etc...

Check temps with Speedfan v4.41 --> http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

Use compressed air to clean vents, but do not directly spray into vents as it may damage the fan.

A:HJT Log, HELP!! My computer is locking up!

Hi wingwang,

Your log is clean !
It is not wise to run 2 different firewalls at the same time, ZoneAlarm and Sygate. I suggest you to uninstall one of them.

Also, you may stop the following processes at the startup. It's a useless resource hog.

1 Run HijackThis (Important : all other open windows must be effectively closed and not minimized, no opened Internet browser while HijackThis is fixing)
and fix the following entries :

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Cmaudio] RunDll32 cmicnfg.cpl,CMICtrlWnd
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DeadAIM] rundll32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

2 Restart the computer.

i figured this was the most appropriate place to post about this so here goes:

im having a slight...erm big problem with my computer. what happens is sometimes when im playing a game at first my mouse will either freeze up, or i will be able to move it horizintally, but not vertically. sometimes its one, sometimes the other. anyways, then my screen will either go black, but usually it will (let me try and explain this) get all wavy, like u nkow if you see a computer screen and its all wavy because ur seeing it through the camera? well imagine something like that but its a lot closer waves so theres a lot of really short distortions, if u can understand that? lol. while that happening my sound will loop for a few seconds, then make a couple clicks and jump to a constant ear piercing screech. nothing works after that, trying to hit any keys wont work, so i have to cold boot it.

so thats the problem, i play about 4 games on my computer, or try and play them. steam (including counter strike, half life 1&2), guild wars, EVE online and perfect world. so i used to play counter strike and then this problem started happening when i was playing it, and then eventually it would happen spontaneously regardless of what i was doing. so i updates my graphics card driver and it stopped happening randomly, but i did stop playing it though. then i played eve for a bit and no problems, and after that i beat half life 1 no problems. then i started playing half life 2 and about half w... I am having serious problems with my computer locking up...

It started occurring on my AMD K6-2 400mhz system, suspecting faulty power, or
motherboard I decided to upgrade just about everything...

I upgraded the case/power supply, motherboard, and processor...

Did not solve the prob, it occurs when transferring large files, it will freeze, lockup
the computer and I have to hit reset. I have tried many things to no avail...

SYSTEM SPECS:
PowerColor PVK7 Motherboard(VIA Apollo KX133 chipset) - I upgraded bios thinking that may solve
the problem but did not...
Creative Labs 52x Cdrom
Mitsumi/Hi-Val CDR Drive (IDE)
Maxtor 14gb 7200rpm hdd
Floppy Drive
32mb pc100 memory(getting pc133 128 chip in the next few days)
AMD Athlon thunderbird 750mhz oem processor
Sound Blaster Live !Value oem sound card
3DFX Voodoo 3 2000 PCI card
3COM/USR 56k winmodem
300watt amd approved power supply

I heard of this problem if you have a Sound Blaster in conjuction with this motherboard but I have taken it out and it did not solve the problem. Could a pci card be malfunctioning and causing this, in windows, in the device manager there are no conflicts or errors.

I get CRC Errors all the time when trying to extract data from compressed archives ie Winzip, Winace, and WinRar... I have asked help from just about everyone and I do not have the money to take it to a computer repair office. I have built 3 other systems but this is my first major problem with any of them.

Any Help Would Be Appreciated... Read more

Hello, I have been having an issue with my desktop computer lately and I am unsure of the cause. whenever I attempt to end a program in task manager it screws up my computer, the desktop goes completely blank except for the background. no icons, no taskbar or anything, I can't even right click and the keyboard does nothing either as far as I know. the only way to get it out of this state is to press the power button and restart it. This also happened the other day when I had a flash drive in the computer, but pulling the flash drive out somehow fixed it to. Can anybody help me out here? It's a rather annoying problem

Have had issue for 2 months. Log into computer, no problem. Begin using internet, computer will freeze some period (can be quick can take awhile) after getting on to internet. I swear I've experienced a lock outside of internet but nothing recently.

Locked means I cannot do ctrl alt del, mouse does not respond, nothing. I have to do manual power down.

I have done the following:
Opened computer and "dusted" being very careful.
Ran Counter Spy
Ran Spybot
Ran Adware
Did SafeBoot and cleaned all temp files that wouldn't clean in normal boot
Scanned with my norton antivirus (I have only 1 antivirus program on my computer)
Updated all drivers for Dell Optiplex 270 as well as Windows XP Professional. Also updated graphic drivers for Intel(R) Extreme graphics
Purchased a WD harddrive and backed up my computer, software and files.
Below is my HJT log as of now. Is there anything there for someone to glean as needing to be fixed? Thank you to whomever may shed some light!

Looking at your HTJ log I Noticed you have Google Desktop installed.

It might just be me, But I'd try uninstalling goggle desktop.
I've had troubles with it before causing problems with the IE, Not sure if they were the same as the fault you've described but it might not be a bad idea, And besides you can always reinstall it.

Also check your event log see if it has a listing of any errors.

Hope it helps.

Have you tried the following?

Goto Start|Settings|Control panel

Double click User Accounts
Select the Advance tab
select the option "Require users to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete".

This also forces you to press ctrl-alt-del when you want to logon to your machine.

I recently acquired a new home-brewed PC with the following:

AMD Athlon processor
1.33 ghz
128 mb ram
Mainboard motherboard #K7VTA3

I used some of my old component boards namely a graphics card:

Jaton Video-67 Pro 3D Image 9750 PCI
Ver. 6.45.5423.98f.98

old sound card and new modem card.
WIN98SE OS

My problem is that the PC keeps locking up during operations both on-line and off-line. I have done every trouble shooting thing that I know how and still can't solve the problem. Could the video card be the problem. There are no upgrades for that particular card.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi I'm trying to fix a computer for an elderly lady. She says it keeps locking up. I'm going to pick it up again in the morning to work on it any recommendations on what I could do to find out why its locking up and fix it? She said it locks up most times when the virus scanner is going (AVG)

Some things I have done already

Uninstall and reinstall AVG
Limit start up programs and services.
Check for viruses and spyware with AVG MBAM and Spybot
Check Disk
Memtest
Defrag
Clean up temp, history and cookies & Cache
I also told her to unplug any external devices like her printer and other items other then the mouse and keyboard.

Any other ideas or anything I can do to test to see whats wrong? Thanks

She cant reformat because she has a program she can no longer get or reinstall.

Hello everyone.

So, as we all know, windows 10 has updated its version again around early this august and I have noticed a big change in the lock screen, notifications, etc. I was really excited at first but then suddenly I had encountered several problems.

The first one is, when I set my computer to sleep or hibernate, the background image before the login screen disappeared and showed a black background image instead. I guess it is just a minor bug that won't interrupt my work so I just let it be.

But now, the problem got worse, whenever I lock screen, I cannot log back in, instead after I entered my password correctly, the text box disappeared and nothing happened. So, I cannot log in until I reboot my computer.

So, I am looking for solutions to help me with my problem. I may be bad at explaining and really expecting for someone in this group have the similar problem and the solution as well. Thank you very much.

Hello,

My friend bought a new computer a few months ago that came with Vista installed. It also came with a bunch of other programs (bloatware) installed. I uninstalled all the stuff she didn't want, which included Norton AV, and replaced that particular program with AntiVir, which I have used and liked for years.

She doesn't use the computer for much except playing pre-installed card games and reading email, and she didn't install anything except her Kodak printer. I installed the Comodo firewall, but that didn't work well for her, so when Zone Alarm released a Vista-compatible version, I uninstalled Comodo and installed ZA.

She began telling me the computer was freezing up from time to time. Then it began freezing up regularly. Now it is freezing up so badly that she can't even play her games.

I reviewed the event log and found errors involving Windows Error Reporting service, and warnings about the printer. I turned off the error reporting and unplugged the printer. The problem persisted.

I'm not a Vista user myself (XP), so don't know exactly how I found this, but I *think* AntiVir popped up a bubble that said it was out of date. I clicked on it, and Vista said there were *multiple* AV programs that were out of date! So I clicked on show me what's installed (or whatever the link was called). That dang Norton still showed up as being installed, even after I uninstalled it! I double checked just in case I had a brain fart, and it is definitely gone from the programs li... Read more

Im some what computer savvy, but this problem has me baffled.

I have a laptop, no name, just a clone put together i got from cyberpower inc about 3 years ago. I run Windows XP I never had any issues with it, and have a nice back up of my hard drive using Nortons Ghost back last year or so.

Like I said never one issue of it freezing up, and then one morning I come out and its locked up , mouse wont move, nothing is responding. SO i power down, then power on, it works fine, then there is no set time, the screen will freeze again.

How often does it freeze ? It is more likely to freeze if i let my computer idle. ( i have it set to never power down HD, no screensaver, nothing at all ) so its not locking up from that..
The lock ups can happen as soon as XP finishes booting up, or it may last about 5 minutes if i dont touch the computer.

It also will lock up if I am on the computer, opening email, opening web browser, opening programs, sometimes it wont. So thats really sporadic.

I play World of Warcraft for long periods of time like 3 to 5 hours straight , and when i am playing the game , it never locks up, but if I close the game out and walk away, let the computer idle, it will lock up in time.
I even play 2 accounts at the same time in windowed mode for hours, and it never locks up.

Whats even weirder, is say if im downloading a torrent, and if i let World of warcraft run, just say I left my guy logged in, and it disconnects by itself, and your at the disconnect screen,... Read more

Is there a way in Windows 2000 that I can "lock" my computer so that other people can't use it. I am in an office where everyone can go to anyone's computer and log themselves in. Unfortunately, my settings on my computer keep on getting changed and I'm getting a little frustrated. I know in Windows 98 I was able to set a password with my screen saver so that if I stepped away from my computer, nobody could use it.

Thanks.

A:Locking my Computer

Well, I use Xp Pro, but this should still work:

My computer running XP is freezing up somewhat periodically (daily, sometimes a few times a day). When it freezes, I can't move the mouse, Ctrl Alt Del, or anything. I'm just forced to manually turn it off and restart.
I don't seem to find any link between things I am doing when it freezes. The last two I remember I was surfing the internet, and another time I was watching a movie.
I have AVG which runs on schedule every night, and it hasn't found any infections lately. I also run Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and CCleaner periodically.
I'm not sure if it is related, but after I restart my Quick launch toolbar is always gone (but easy enough to get back in the start menu properties). It doesn't disappear if I shut down or restart properly.
Any ideas on how to proceed with this?
Thanks in advance

Hi, this might be a long shot, but I share my computer with my teenage kids. They constantly muck around with the computers settings, download a heap of garbage and generally I have to reformat every couple of weeks.

Is there any way I can let them use the computer for net surfing, but lock them out from downloading, or changing settings etc. ??

A:DDR is locking up computer

I would check your motherboard manufactor's website and usually they have a list of what types and brands of DDR memory will work with their products. Why you would need 512MB, espically DDR, on a Celeron processors makes me wonder anyway. But if you have to have it, go to www.google.com and search for the brand of your motherboard and go to the website. They may even tell you what brand will work if you are putting 2 in at a time. If they say a different brand, just Ebay the ones you have and buy the ones they say will work. Good LUCK! Hope I helped out some!

Hi,
Recently my computer began locking up. A friend said I have a bad hard drive. I purchased a new HD mirrored my old drive and installed this drive. The lock ups continued. Another friend said it sounded like my RAM was going bad, i ran the Microsoft Ram test, it says all is well. Yet the computer continues to lock up.

When i boot up the computer the windows desk top comes up I can move the mouse then the mouse will either lock up, or the computer restarts the boot up process. I have down loaded everest home edition and the CPU fan is running fine and the CPU temp is around 80 F. After several boots the computer will run normally for a while.

Usually when i start a new program or switch between two programs the computer will reboot itself. When i try to install new programs the computer will reboot, usually during the verification or unzipping of files.

So i grabbed the old hard drive and put it back in the computer and wiped the drive and reinstalled windows xp. I completed that successfully, i downloaded and installed service pack 2, everest home edition and loaded fix it utilities 7.

I then ran a scan of the computer with fix it utilities hardware. All the scans showed no problems.

I then attempted to down load dot net 2 framework so i could install the ATI catalyst drivers for the video card. When the install began for Dot Net the Recovery Commander for fix it utilities popped up and the computer locked up again.
Now i have tried to reboot the computer 8 times. ... Read more

After a long extensive google search i have ended up here with none of my problems solved.

Where to start, around a month or two ago my computer started to lock up. I would be working on it and it would freeze. No BSOD, and i couldn't access the task manager, the mouse would still move. After it froze if i clicked the keys on the keyboard it wouldnt do anything until my computer started beeping with each keystroke.

The weird thing is, it only happens when i do things on it. The other day i let it boot up, i opened itunes, and left it alone. It went a day and a half without freezing, but then i opened firefox and started browsing the web and it froze withing 5 minutes.

I have a dell xps 400

Windows XP

512 mb ram

I have no clue what the problem is, any help with even diagnosing it would be greatly appreciated.

I am operating Windows 2000 XP on an almost new Dell and my computer keeps locking up. I can be in the middle of a program and suddenly the screen will turn blue with diagonal lines all over it. There are no error messages that come up nor have I had any in the past. The power button will not respond when I push it so I have to physically unplug my hard drive from the wall outlet to reboot. It used to only happen once a month but lately it's been once a week.

Any ideas?? Hardware or software problem?

Thanks!

So running windows 7 ultimate but this happened on windows XP too. During and ONLY during video game load screens my computer will sometimes lock up (about 15% of load screens) and will force me to restart. I thought it was the video card overheating or something of the sort but if thats the case why would it only happen during load screens and not during the game?

This happens in CoD 4, CoD MW2, and the command and conquer games, havnt tried any others.

Thx in advance for any ideas

I just came to the office and my computer monitor was dark but the computer was running, as if it were doing something. I was unable to wake it or get it working properly so I did a hard shut down. When I restarted it went to:

Continue with system restore or delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu. I chose the first and it locked again so on another retry I chose the second choice to go to the boot menu.

Windows started

Performed a check disk for consistency and found no problems

Started Windows and here I am.

I am not sure why this is happening, it is the second time in a few days. Is something going wrong with my system? Is my power setting not right for some reason?

All my virus, malware and spyware data bases are up to date and have been run.

Ideas?

Hello!

I have had my custom built computer for around a year and a half now, but recently it's started acting up in a bad way.

What keeps happening is one I put stress on the computer (like playing Farcry 3, Battlefield 3) on maxed settings it starts to lock up, strange sounds come through the computers speakers.

The computer will not blue screen, it will lock up and become completely unresponsive, prior to it locking up I will get split second freezes in game, the strange sounds usually accompany these freezes.

I believe there is a piece of hardware in my computer that is broken or compromised however I can't locate it. I have also tried reformatting, didn't help.

A:My Computer Keeps Locking Up

Hello Woolysheep8 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I do not see any signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.

I suggest posting in the XP forum and have them take a look at what's going on. Give them as much detail as possible regarding when the lockup occurs (if only when specific programs are running or when any programs are running). Let them know that you have been to this forum andthat no malware was found.

Cheers.

My AMD based computer running Windows XP Home Edition has gotten very slow to the point where it locks up. Nothing showed up in an AVG 2012 virus scan nor a Malwarebytes scan so I did a SAFE MODE virus scan with AVG 2012, and a malware scan with Malwarebytes. Nothing found. When I did a Malwarebytes quick scan in normal mode it went beyond 12 minutes cycling through temporary folders. This was just after running a CCleaner sweep. Normal is 6 minutes for that quick scan. I had been getting Out Of Memory At Line: 1 messages. When I am on the internet on a page I hear the computer clicking as if programs were opening or closing.
I did the disk cleanup, chkdsk and defrag to no avail. Finally, I found a ERUNT backup form last year and did the ERUNT.exe to reinstall the registry. Now the Start button is inactive and I can't find System Restore.

Ok, something very weird is going on with my computer. It is delayed and locking up for a few seconds every few minutes.

I ran Spybot...NOTHING
Ad-Aware...NOTHING
CWShredder...NOTHING

I also have SpywareBlaster that I update every few days. McAfee has detected nothing. But I know my system well enough to know something is very wrong here. Can you take a look at my HJT log and see if anything is amiss?

TIA!

Hi! I wasn't sure where exactly to put this as I still don't know exactly what the problem is but here we are anyways.

A few days ago my computer started locking up after no more than ~30 minutes of being on. I ran virus scans, hardware diagnostics, and then did a system restore to several days before it started and it still locks up. Now it seems that it mainly locks up when the computer idles for a bit. Does anybody have any ideas as to what may be the cause?

Thanks.

A:Computer Locking Up

Welcome to the forums.

Primary contenders: Heat and the Power Supply.

Try opening up your case and completely blowing out the dust using a can or two of compressed air. Make sure the fans are clear. Make sure you put the case back on before you run it again. If you leave the case off, you will have no airflow and will definitely have a heat problem.

It seems that everytime I insert a disc into my CD ROM or DVD R/W, my computer will lock up. I am not sure what I causing it. I originally thought it was my DVD shrink and decryptor, but it locked up again after uninstalling it.

This is really starting to annoy me... I have a hunch that it could be after I install XP SP1, but that is just an idea.

Can anyone help me in this matter, this computer is starting to get on my last nerves.

TIA,

A:Computer locking up

Check the cables on the drive, make sure they securely connected. Any other changes you made recently besides SP1? Might have a look in MSKB(look in my signature for the link) there may be a known issue with certain drives and SP1.

hi guys im new here and this is my first post.

my problem is...

i have just recently upgraded my computer with 2 gigs of RAM recomended to me by crucial.com for my shuttle xpc system.

i recieved the ram and upgraded as you would normally. everything was working fine untill my computer decided to lock up on me. i couldnt do anything with the system it had completley locked up. i hit the restart button on my pc and it wouldnt boot into windows. it would just hang on the bios screen.

i left the computer for a while and then turned it back on and it booted up streight away. i used the pc for about 30 mins and then it locked up again.

so i thaught it might be the memory i had baught. so i took out the new memory and replaced it with the old 512 stick i had. and the problem still occured.

since then i have replaced the memory again with the 2gb i baught and completley wiped my computer of everything including the OS.

i have re-installed windows xp and all of the drivers etc for my hardware and started to use my pc as normal for about 4 hours untill it locked up again.

i am using the same pc now to write this thread and so far it has not locked up on me.

any ideas on what my problem could be.

i have ruled out memory ad i ran memtest and nothing was rong. im guessing maybe my hard drive or video card.

im not overly knowladgeable about pc's but i have some idea on what im doing.

but im puzzled on this one.

thanks guys.

A:my computer keeps locking up please help

Is it possible you dislodged one of your pc fans?

You have ruled out the memory so you may have unpluged something when you installing the ram. Check a all fans are working including your grafix card if it has one.

Also try using a different slot for your ram if you have an extra slot. Just incase.

Thats all I can think of.

So almost eevry time I come back to my computer after a longer period of being away it will completely freeze on me. I have not added any hardware or installed software since this began and have been using this computer for a year and a half.
Example would be Im able to use now, and it will run fine all night, but then I go to bed, close all programs and shut the screen off. When I get up in the morning Ill come out, turn the screen on and wiggle the mouse and it moves but I can click on anything, and the taskbar won't even pop up. Mouse still moves for a bit or until I try clicking a bunch then it too locks up. ive given the computer over 10 minutes and it stays until I power down with the power button, give it a minute and poer it back up, and everything is fine.

I just cleaned it out so its not dusty. I have run lots of virus scans and had tech at work run some deep scans and safe mode scans as well with nothing being found.
Any ideas of things I can try?

Sounds like a problem coming out of sleep. Have you changed anything (like a video driver, ram, cpu, etc)?

Hi,
Recently my computer began locking up.

Now i have tried to reboot the computer 8 times. ... Read more

Hello, my computer has been locking up lately to the point where I have to reboot. I get to different sites and I cannot minimize them, cannot close them either by the "X" button, by right clicking on the program at the bottom of the screen and choosing "close", and in some cases even control, alt, delete will not work. Then the screen just freezes and I have to totally reboot. This was not happening before so I think I may have some kind of virus. Can you help please.

This is the whole history of my problem...

I had a AMD Athlon 1.4GHz processor, IWill KK66Plus motherboard, 768MB SDRAM, GeForce FX 5700 Ultra, Two 40GB harddrives, and a 500W powersupply.

Everything ran perfectly fine.

Then I recently bought a P4 2.8GHz processory, ECS ELITEGROUP L4VXA2 Motherboard, and 512DDRAM.
I switched everything out.

Everything ran great in windows, it was fast and flawless. I ran 3DMark to test my new stuff, it ran great without any major errors.

So I go to play a game, any game, CS, UT2k4, Halo, and wow it ran pretty good for the first 5-10Mins, but then, my whole system locks up. I tried changing BIOS settings, motherboard jumpers, and switching the RAM chips and moving them into different RAM slots. It still locks up durring gameplay.

My processor runs at 40 - 44 Degrees Celsius, and I know nothing else can overhead because I have 2 intake fans on the side of my case, 2 intake fans on the front of my case, 2 outake on the back of the case, 1 on the video card, 1 on the processor, and 2 in the powersupply.

Everything ran GREAT before I installed the new motherboard, I run Windows 2000 Professional, please help me!
