[SOLVED] Internet Cafe - Computer trouble

Q: [SOLVED] Internet Cafe - Computer trouble

Hi everyone,

I just recently gained a job at an internet cafe called xxxxxxxx, in xxxxxxxxx, Colorado.

There is a computer here that has had some trouble and I can't quite figure it out.

The original problem is the computer would boot into windows and explorer would never start. I tried the same thing in safe mode, and it still would not run. So I ran a windows repair on the computer, by inserting a windows xp home cd, and selecting the repair option AFTER you choose to install windows to the hard drive.

During the install process it came up with a couple of error messages telling me the computer did not have administrator rights, so I couldn't install specific files. But it continued through and seemed to reinstall windows.

Now when I start the computer, it comes up to a blue screen then immediately restarts itself. And it continues to cycle itself through this loop.

Any suggestions?

Thank you so much,

A: [SOLVED] Internet Cafe - Computer trouble

Hi Brandon.

First, congrats on your new job.

Anyway, access the boot menu like you would to boot into safe mode. But Disable automatic restart on system failure, and then boot into Windows. It should show a BSOD.

Post the entire contents of the error. you don't have to post the "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer..." part, just the technical details.

I am interested in bringing my laptop to a cafe which has WiFi, unfortunately it's an Open Internet Connection (no password needed). I'm aware of hacks such as FireSheep

What can I do to protect my data?

My Google searches brought up an overwhelming amount of info about LogMeIn Hamachi and UltraVNC. But I'm not sure that's what I want.

My only experience with LogMeIn is that I used it from one location to "Remote Access" my desktop at home. It worked, but the lag time was annoying.

Can anyone suggest the best wired networking solution for 15 client PC's running on Windows XP Home.

Also, what would be the ideal bandwidth for this many PC's if they were all running simultaneously. I'm planning on a DSL connection.

Thank you so much in advance for your kind attention.

I am a small business in Colorado and a customer has asked me to set up Internet access on his existing network to allow his customers to access the Internet via his WiFi. However, he obviously does not want anyone to access his personal data on his existing network.

My thoughts are that I would install a secondary router and bridge the two using separate IP's. A few questions about this idea are: Would I set each router as a DHCP server?, How to allow his network access to the Internet while preventing anyone access to his network.

I have not seen his set-up yet, but I'm assuming he is using store bought routers (ie. Linksys, Netgear, etc)

Your input would be appreciated!!!

A:Setting up an Internet Cafe

Usual setup. IP's used are for demonstration.

His internet to his router with internal (LAN) and WAP or WAP2 wireless encryption, if he has wireless.

Ethernet from a LAN port on his router to the WAN port on the customer router.
Customer router's internal (LAN) IP would (different subnet), different SSID and no wireless encryption.

I hang out at an internet cafe with my laptop sippin' espresso. I surf the web, go to various social sites and forums, including this one. BUT: If I venture onto myspace or you tube I'm blocked, I get blue on blue screen with the message:
"This site is blocked by the SonicWALL Content Filter Service"

People with PCs and Macs nearby are not blocked. The people who provide the local WiFi claim they do not have a filter nor a firewall up.

I have two laptops and I get the message with both of them. Thea are ACeRs one runs XP the other runs VISTA.

Any ideas why I'm being blocked and how I can get around it?

Hi guys, new poster in a bit of a pickle!

Im currently in Peru, and today I have taken some of the photos of my life, but guess what...I think I may have lost them.

My camera corrupted the card, fortunately I have recovered files before, and this time was no different. The program I use, PhotoREC, found all the corrupted files. I saved them to desktop, formatted the card and was about to write them back onto the card. Problem solved? Almost.

I am in an internet cafe, and there was a power cut. On restart, all the recovered files I can no longer find. It seems here, like many cafes, the PCs automatically delete all files a user has downloaded, or made on each restart.

With the card reformatted, now the recovery software can only find a small fraction of what was recovered before, and I really dont know whether to laugh or cry!

So my question is, is anyone familiar with internet cafe software, and could possibly suggest where these ?user? files may have been sent or deleted to?

Im spent with trying to recover from the card itself, it feels like I have tried everything. But any extra tips that could salvage some more of the pics (better software advice etc) would be appreciated also.

Cheers in advance. Tom.

Hi Folks... Clueless Here....

I have me this idea to make a mobile internet cafe.... and take it with me to festivals of sorts.

I've got the 2 way satelite dish and have gone mobile before, now I'm adding a new dimension where my wifi signal will be expanded to a "hot spot" similar to those you see at for example Panera Bread Company.

Problem: I'd like to stay mobile and use a notebook for a server.... IS THIS POSSIBLE ???????????? I'm using a hotspot software program called Antamedia. Signal will need to flow as follows:

a) Sat Dish
b) Sat Dish Modem (ethernet)
c) Server
d) D-Link Wifi Router (ethernet)
e) Dual Omni Antennas
f) End users will be monitored via Server for time and bandwidth use

Question: Can I do this with a laptop and one of those 10/100/1000Mbps PCMCIA network cards ? Antemedia instructions says my server will need a NIC1 and a NIC2 connection for info to flow into and out of the server.

If I have to use a desktop I will, but the big advantage with the Notebook version is that I can use DC power to power the Notebook.... and my goodness it's much less bulky to tote around...!

Thanks in advance,
Have not purchased equipment yet so I don't know what operating system of Windows I'll be using.

Hi guys,

Appologies if i have the wrong department here, but, i have been given the task of setting up a small area of a cafe in which the customer wants three terminals for internet use. setting up a free service so there is no need for any software to restrict usage or time usage. Simply the guy wants 3 monitors with keyboard's & mouse's on a bench.
Will it be a simple case of 3 x small pc builds hooked up to a router or is there a cost efective way of hooking the three monitors through some sort of basic terminal to a central desktop/server.

It all sounded easy untill i sat down to figure out the best way of doing it lol.

Any suggestions or advice as to how to best set this up are most appreciated.

A:mini internet cafe set up

- Build 3 good quality computers
- Run cat6 cable to a 8port gigabit switch *
- Run a cat6 cable from the switch to a good router like a linksys WRT54GL & flash it with 3rd party firmware like DD-WRT. **
- Run a Cat6 cable from the Router to your ISP modem ***
- Don't let users use the computer in Admin mode, setup some generic user with limited privileges

* I say an 8 port gigabit switch because if he ever adds more computers to the area. Also if they were to play games or transfer large files or anything the computers would be hooked up via Gigabit which would be faster

** The reason for this is in the future if he wants to control computers on the network or anything like that he will have many more options with this firmware then the stock linksys one... it also makes it more stable/less issues. Also if you go this route have the router restart everyday at some time in the early morning when nobody is at this location just to clear the memory and avoid other potential issues.

*** I suggest a slightly faster connection since it will be shared between 3 computers and maybe more in the future. So depending on your area a faster cable package or even Fiber if its avail and at a decent price.

Ok lest start with what i am doing and then i will get to the equipment. Ok I am trying to run internet for my platoon in iraq. I am going threw the company i am trying to run about 25 people. My modem is a DW4020. I already have the newest version just waiting on commissioning. I currently have 14 people. I have a dlink DI604 router, which i am currently not using due to ip add issues working on firmware. My current one is a Linksys WRT54G router. I have 4 switches just to save cable 2 dlink 1 linksys and 1 other.
I get 5 GB per month with a daily limit of 200MB. The GB's are only measured from 10am to 10pm my time (bahgdad). Once i go over and i become untrusted The attachments show the scales. The daily limit is 200MB and as long as i dont go over 200 it leaks them out at 75 Kbs. My biggest question is what do you recommend to run this. I also have a programmable cisco switch in the mail should be here any day.

Ps Monthly service is office 1000

A:Internet cafe setup

I think what you are doing is great, but I see many issues with it.

First the bandwidth allowed...

200mb daily limit for 25 users? Not good at all. You will need to have a filtering solution in place to keep users from abusing the link. If people start streaming music that 200mb is going to get chewed up quick. Also, all thoughs image heavy myspace pages...

You can rate limit each port on the cisco, thats a start. Also, I would not make wireless available to everyone. Better to have them come to you and connect to your switch when they want to browse.

just wondering if how is the network setup of an internet cafe, is it peer to peer o client/server? Do you need an actual server and Window Server OS? I saw this layouts after i searched some forums, which of these are correct? Which of these are applicable in using internet cafe management software?

modem>router>switch>server and desktops
modem>switch>server and desktops

*i dont if the server here are actually a server or just a normal desktop

A:Internet Cafe Network

It purely depends upon the scenario and your circumstances ,

1.If you are having a small business its adviced to use a Router >switch>server OS and hardware>desktops

2.if you are owning a small nuclear network u can use Modem>Desktops

Depends on the needs u can use switch to extend the network !!

At home I access the net through dialup because that is all that is available to me. I run the zonealarm firewall software on my laptop and when I check out my potential vulnerability on the Shields up web site, I get a clean bill of health.

However, , when I take my laptop out on the town and connect through the free services at local restaurants and such, I can't get that same level of security as indicated through the Shields up website that I get at home. I suspect it is because the Shields up probe is reading the configuration of the system that I am accessing through and not my own laptop.

At any rate, I just want to know if I am getting a secure enough connection with my zonealarm to engage in serious buisiness while I am out surfing the net through a free wireless connection at burger doodle........

A:internet cafe security question

i think the safest you will be is with a good firewall, uptodate virus program, uptodate windows, spyware - spybot { i like having teatimer enabled} , ada-ware and spywareguard.

you wont be able to do much much about ports on there routers etc

i want to disable task manager regedit msconfig and mmc if my customers are using,

but is there a way i could enable it if i am the one using the computer???

A:Windows 7 Tweaks for Internet Cafe.

You might want to have a look at a program called DeepFreeze (System Restore Software - Restore on Reboot | Faronics Deep Freeze). If you don't know about it already, it basically freezes the computer and resets it to the saved/frozen state every restart. This is great if you get someone in your iCafe who decides they want to go on a virus downloading spree and infect your systems - just restart and it's all fixed.

I am going away for a while and am setting up some software ("Remote Web Workspace" for the record) on my network (SBS2003) which allows me to log in to my work PC from any internet browser, any location in the world.

The only thing is, the browser needs to be able to install and run an ActiveX control from Microsoft ("Remote Desktop ActiveX Control". for the record).

Can anyone (preferably a few people, so I get a good representative sample) voice an opinion as to the chances of internet cafes / hotel internet clusters etc. letting me do this ? (i.e. allowing users to install ActiveX controls into the browser).

Like I say, the AcitiveX control is from Microsoft.

However, I've heard some public internet facilties are very much tied down in what you can do in them.

If it helps, I'm off to Spain - as there may be location-specific differences...

any comments / opinions gratefully received

in spain you should be alright, i know the US has certain rules about whats okay to use in public wifi but mostly cafe's block other things via proxy not usually microsoft and activeX, if they do you could always just ask them.

We want to be able to from the main machine click on a button that will start for example computer 1 and time how long it gets used and work out what to charge for the usage of the computer. We also want to be able to block some users from accesing certain things, like run and stuff that if the school students got into could mess things up. is there any way you can do this sort of stuff in windows server 2003? or should we just contact the makers of the old software and renue it and pay lots of money? Reboot the laptop, and the process starts all over again.

Never have any trouble on any other wifi. Another laptop that I will occasionally bring stays connected for well over an hour. Same with my phone.

Hello, everyone. We are trying to set up a computer to be used as some-what of a cyber cafe. Basically we need two things:

1. Prevent users from using most programs. Allow access to IE or some other browser, and possibly Word.

2. This is the main thing that we need. We saw this implemented at a Staples. What we want is for the computer to be locked, and to unlock it, a customer has to swipe their credit card on a box connected to the computer via USB. Once the customer does this, they can use the computer, and a small timer in the corner shows how much time has been used, since they are being charged per minute. Then, once the customer is finished, the computer will relock and print a receipt.

Does anyone have an idea on how to do this? We've tried programs such as Smartlaunch, but we were having trouble with it, and it appears that an account has to be created for each user. The point of the set up we require is so that we don't have to be present for the customer to pay to use the computer.

I think what you are looking to do is limit use ability to go else where other then Web Browsing Have you looked into creating an account with UAC settings in effect with password if you lock everything down like that they will only be able to surf the web and everytime they try to do something else a password prompt will show up

Hi there!

I am a newb and I am hoping that I put this thread in the right category.

I was wondering if you could point me in the direction of a really great kiosk/internet cafe software, or provide me with specific customization specs for the built in software for Windows 7 and 8?

I work for a small nonprofit. We serve people with significant disabilities. We help them stay out of institutions, and in their local community. Most of our clients don't have enough money to buy/maintain their own computers.

We finally saved up enough for kiosk computers for our clients (we run Windows). I would like a system where our clients can log in to look for jobs, create resumes, apply for benefits, and have limited access to the local printers (print ten pages max). We will provide them with thumb drives, so they don't need to save files on the hard drive permanently. They won't be charged. We don't have a server. All of their data should be wiped when their session ends to protect our clients privacy.

I'm over the top looking at all of the reviews and directions. Any ideas, hints, or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

A:Choosing a Windows 7/8 Internet Cafe/Kiosk or Customize the built in?

Hi and Welcome to SevenForums,

You could take a look at this software, it is paid software (i'm sure there would be some free alternatives but i can't point you in the direction of one off the top of my head).
Drive Vaccine delivers non restrictive pc hard drive protection using restore on reboot technology delivering automated PC maintenance Ideal for computer labs, classrooms, libraries, business centres and internet kiosks.

It's something i had a play with when setting up kiosk machines at work, it seemed to fit the job for me so we bought it but time hasn't allowed me to install it on the machines yet.

When testing i created a machine, got it to a state / build i liked and then take a snapshot with that software.
Then every time the computer is logged off, restarted or left idel for x minutes it would restore to the snapshot version which would remove and saved files, history etc...

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your malware problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.

Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. My computer has been running very slow and has trouble staying connected to the internet. This started after I followed the advice in the Virus/Trojan/Spyware sticked thread, "Is Your PC Running Slow?" I deleted temporary files and then used Spybot Search & Destroy to get rid of tracking cookies.

As for the internet (wifi), every minute or so, it will look like it's connecting, saying it's "acquiring network address" and then it will reconnect. I don't think it's my modem because the lights all look fine and I can connect without problems using my netbook and my smartphone, also using wifi.

A:Computer slow & trouble with internet connection

Do a system restore to a time before you deleted the temp files.

I've had my computer (MSi GT60 0NC) since August of last year. In the last month, I noticed that after turning on my computer, sometimes I can only go to the first ~5 sites I went to. For example, if I turned on my computer, went to techsupportforum, Google, Bing, StackOverflow, and Spotify, I would only be able to go to those websites in particular. I could fix this by restarting, and it only happened about once a week, so I ignored it for the most part. Recently, however, it's gotten progressively worse, even to the point that restarting does not fix it. The only way I've found that fixes it is to just leave the computer alone for 10 minutes. I'm really confused at what is happening. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, and here's a screenshot of my computer's specs (probably not relevant, just wanted to post it just in case):

Also, I've tested it out, and it's not just the web browser. If I open cmd and use ping or ipconfig, it doesn't work.
Here's an example ping (one site that did work, one that did not):

and here's an example tracert (that did not work):

If I forgot any important details, just let me know.

Thanks in advance!

Hello there! I'm hoping to find a solution to my problem from you. I have two computers: one running Windows Me and the other Windows XP . In each computer I have only one ethernet card installed and enabled to work. I've also purchased a Cat 5E Crossover Cable. I only have access to dial-up through a modem. How can I create a network to share the same internet connection through dial-up modem of either computer being the host? I await for your response. Thanks

Hi, I have just recently build a new desktop around 2 weeks ago, it has been working fine till 2 or 3 days ago.
My computer will hang at random timings, sometimes just while in loading up a game and sometimes 10-20 minutes into the game.
Another issue is that there seem to be some problem with the ethernet connection, my computer refuses to connect to the internet on startup (unidentified network/limited), and requires me to plug/unplug the ethernet cable from the ethernet port of my computer multiple times before being able to connect.
I decided to do fresh install of windows 10 to see if it helped, but after installing my motherboard drivers, while downloading the driver for my graphic card my computer froze again.

My computer (Sony Vaio VGN-FS790P running Windows XP) has been having issues when I browse the Internet. I currently use Firefox and it works fine most of the time, though every now and then the browser will freeze and it tends to lock up my entire system. When I go into the task manager to end the process, the computer often then tries to run dumprep.exe without it actually doing anything besides taking up memory, and I have to force quit the process to be able to do anything. Sometimes when I attempt to restart the computer afterward, XP will not bring up the menu options for turning it off/logging out/switching user, and I end up having to do a hard reset (holding down the power button until the computer shuts down). When I try to restart after such episodes, oftentimes the computer will turn on and then not make it to the login screen. Eventually I am able to get back on (often after being prompted by the system that the computer shut down unexpectedly and it asks if I would like to restart normally or in the last known good configuration or in a variety of safe modes). Sometimes the computer works fine for a few days and other times it won't work and I have to try to restart it again. I've noticed that if the computer goes into the screen saver the problems typically restart, but if I put it in Standby mode I can usually get back on again without much trouble.I ran HijackThis and below is my logfile.Any help is greatly appreciated!Thanks,- CaseyLogfile of Tre... We are using Windows XP Professional ver 5.1 SP3 on our laptop. Using IE 6

Recently, we started to get a lot of Pop ups and so my husband changed the settings to block Pop ups. He also decided to shut off the auto update feature as it was taking very long and do it manually once a week.

Since then we started to get a different - constant popup problem from Trend Micro Office scan that says URL Blocked and the URL is always\...... with a very long message everytime we browse anything (it doesn't matter what browser we use)

Other Problems:
1. We are noticing internet browsing has slowed down considerably
2. When I click on any link on my Hotmail web page it keeps showing its Loading which has never happened before. It takes several clicks for the link to finally work. It also keeps giving me a message Windows Live Hotmail has diconnected. Please try again later. This has also never happened before.
3. When I shut off the computer a window pops up showing Ending now RUNDLL32. It seems like it is saving information and trying to shut the program down but when its towards the end of the bar. It says program has stopped responding. So I have been clicking the END NOW button and then it shuts off OK.

Running Windows XP
Problem reported after running Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security 2012

The problem is reported EVERY time a scan completes, leaving me with this message:
Scan Results: Additional Cleaning Needed. To remove some unresolved threats click "Download Now" to start setting up a rescue disk. I've had NO luck getting the rescue disk to work the way they Trend instructions say it should, i.e. to give me an option to "resolve threats" after booting from the disk. I've searched the internet for help on that, joined the Trend Micro user's community, followed everyone's suggestions, no luck yet.

Now my computer is running slower and slower, and sometimes freezes. It also does other strange things like booting up ok but not allowing me to open any applications and forcing me to do a cold boot to get it going. It also changed the time on the clock!

ALSO....I booted up in safe mode hoping to run a Trend Internet Security 2012 scan, but the Trend icon in safe mode is directed to an old (2006!) install of Trend. I couldn't see how to run 2012 there.

Below are the things the "Read this first" post suggested. One problem, however: The instructions mention an ark.text file, but I don't seem to see one created by the steps in the instructions. I have pasted below the hijackthis log, the dds.txt file, and have attached the attach.txt file as instructed. I also pasted below the results of the GMER exe.rootkit/mal... Read more

Alright, so my computer was getting what looked like a stop error after I rebooted it one time. It wasn't going to reboot again without quickly flashing a blue screen for less than a second then restarting to try and boot again so I just reinstalled Windows XP (an unpdated version from what I had at that I believe).

But now there's a problem, I didn't do a complete reformatt because I still have all my files and such on my laptop, but I have no internet connection! It's very frusterating, becuase I'm using an ethernet cable and router but the computer is not picking up any internet connection at all. I think it recognizes the ethernet cable due to the fact that the light in the ehternet port is lit up a static orange. I've tried connecting directly to the modem as well to no avail. I even tried connecting the phone line directly into the laptop with no result.

I've read some sites that tell me to download drivers, but I can't download drivers because I have no internet connection! I don't believe my computer came with any CD's that contained any drivers either, it's a Dell Inspiron 6000 and I got it about 3 or 4 years ago. I remember it came with this cardboard CD and said that if I ever needed to do a system restore or w/e it was already on the computer.

Now, seeing as how you got far enough on the internet to get here, it seems as if you have access to the internet. Unless you're on a public computer in which case you couldn't download.

Trouble viewing video clips from internet. My PC (XP Home) works fine in all aspects, except that downloaded files will often be incomplete. The current problem is that I am trying to view small video clips (1or 2 minutes of video) from a holiday company’s website. The files appear to be .wvx files.

I have tried to view in IE7, Firefox & using Windows Media Player 11. In all cases, the video will start, play for a few seconds then freeze whilst the message is that it is buffering (although it never resumes play). In an effort to troubleshoot, my wife accessed the clips OK from her laptop whilst connected at work, but when we tried to use her laptop via our wireless signal at home, the same problem as my home PC surfaced. I am at a loss as to whether the problem is a setting on my PC (which is wired into the router) or perhaps a setting on the router.

So, I am in the midst of rebuilding/upgrading my computers. At the moment only one is operational. Basically #1, but with the drives of #2. The strange thing is, when I put the HDD from #2 into the system, I can't access the internet. I also get no sound, but that's beside the point for this thread (I may post a similar thread related to the sound in one of the other forums). With the HDD from #1, everything works perfectly. I change nothing else except for the HDD.

Because I have recently had all sorts of issues and troubleshooting that went on with #2 (to eventually find that the MB had gone bad) I have even done both a windows repair install, and a clean install (including formatting the drive). Same thing still happens.

Well I obviously have a problem. Whenever i try and log into my xp account i get a bsod. The only info i get on the "error" is:

stop: 0x00000008E (0xC0000005, 0x80035A9D, 0x00000000)

Now to give more info i think might be helpful. I recently contracted antivirus 09. I thought i had killed it but a last week super anti spyware found a trace of it and deleted it. (I followed basic steps the forum instructs) So i put that out on the table. Lately my internet (the past 2 days) has not been working. It works one morning but after i put it in sleep mode for 8 hours and come home the internet no longer works. So i looked online to see if i could dig up anything. My ie was displaying a address that had megaclick (something like that, it stopped) in it instead of the default google. That from my research on the internet was from the megaupload manager. So i thought to get rid of it. After i uninstalled it i booted in safe mode to run my various scans. I have McAfee, Avg8, super anti spyware, and Malwarebytes anti malware. Since my tango with antivirus 09 my avg has no longer worked.

(I stupidly uninstalled it when it would no longer update during my time with antivirus 09 so i uninstalled and reinstalled it and that's when it no longer worked. It would start a scan and then it would bsod with the error: no_page_error something. i can get the error if it would help. My friend said that the data in avg was corrupted giving me the error. This isn't really Software related, just really need an answer or two on why this is happening and if this has happened to anyone else.

Well my problem is that my computer freezes or restarts itself whenever it pleases. Usually when I have about 3-5 programs running my computer will just freeze, sometimes only one! Then I have to restart it manually, then about 3-4 hours later it will restart itself or freeze again. But this doesn't happen every 3-4 hours, sometimes it can be days before it will freeze/restart then I have to do the process of re-booting my computer again. I was talking to a friend about this, he knows a thing or two about computers. He says it's the lack of memory on my computer that once I have too many programs running at once the processor can take all that memory at once, then it will restart or freeze on it's own...

I've had this computer a little over 2 years now, and this started about late March of this year, before that, everything was running smoothly, no freezes or restarting.

If anyone has any feedback on this, feel free to reply, thanks.

It sounds like you added some software in March that may be causing this. Did you add new software in March?

Also do you run with a firewall and anti-virus?

Another thing do you keep your firewall, anti-virus and XP updated (I am assuming you are running with XP with System Pack 2 installed)?

Lastly, do you add a lot of new software and then remove them?

My computer tower has been through a lot, and it's beginning to fall behind the standards of today's pcs. However, my PC has been running abnormally slow lately, and I'm not sure if it's because of the computer or an infection or some kind. It's never been this slow before. Avg found nothing.

My wife has been giving me agite for the last 4 months about this and I'm not sure what to do. If its a problem inherent in Vista, the comp, or both, then it makes me very sorry to ever have gone with either.

There are 2 problems and I think they're interrelated. The computer loves to reboot due to a system error. at least every few days if not more.

The 2nd is that it loves to randomly disconnect from the internet, even though it says its connected (by saying local & internet, sometimes it likes to randomly suggest its just locally connected even though my other computer on XP2 is fine. ANd other times it says Local when it connects to the net just fine)

I've looked at a lot of sites and tried a few things, (installing newest drivers..etc..) to no avail. My wife hates her computer.

I"ve run the debugger and it always points to athr.sys , which i believe is the wireless card, which is why I think the problem is connected. I ran an !analyze on the most recent and got the message below. Can anyone suggest what settings or something i can mess with to fix this? I'm fed up already. I've adjusted some of the power settings in hope that that may have caused it, without success. Can anyone help??

Hello, I recently posted because I had a virus on my computer but I ended up just reloading my xp computer instead of trying to have you help me remove the virus. But after I reloaded it, I realized that I can't find my motherboard installation disk. So I found the drivers online (the motherboard is a MSI 760 GM-P33) and I installed them but my computer is not working properly. If I look at that device manager, it shows yellow exclamation points on other devices and pci device (2 times) and video controller. I also can't seem to download anything at all and it's not picking up the windows updates so I can update it and when I try to search for them manually, it won't allow me to download them. Do you have any suggestions on what I can do? Thanks, Deanna

A:[SOLVED] trouble with computer after reloading

You should only download your drivers from the MSI download page for your motherboard. In the Device Manager, do you a setting for Network Adapters?
On an internet computer, go to MSI drivers page: MSI Global - Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Motherboard, Graphics and more, download the System & Chipset driver and install that first, if you don't have internet, save it to a USB Flash Drive and install it on the troubled computer.
Also download the Onboard LAN driver, and any other device drivers needed from the Device Manager, including the two Other drivers on the Download Page.

For another computer, I have two maxtor harddrives connected via IDE to a P4P800-E Asus motherboard.

When booting up, the system goes through some check with something called "FastBuild" which I have never heard about. I think it may have something to do with having the two harddrives work together. This computer here was bought used so maybe the previous user customized the bios?

Anyway, if I try to reformat as usual, running the Win XP Pro Cd while booting up, and install as usual, the setup files load up fine. Then, when I hit enter (to setup Win XP), there's a 25 second delay where the bottom of the screen (grey area) says "Please Wait..." and then the screen loads up where it should show my partitions and allow me to choose which to install.

THere's no highlight bar - instead, it says
"Unknown Disk"
<this drive cannot be found>
and it says this twice - I'm assuming because I have two of these harddrives - both of which cannot be read.

So 'delete partition' doesn't work - so my only option is Enter = Install.

Then the following message comes up:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

THe problem seems to be caused by the following file: setupdd.sys

Hi everyone,

My name is Todd, and I'm a college student living on campus with a bit of a network problem.

Let me explain some things that focus on the problem I'm having. My college has network policies for any laptop or computer being used in the dorms. They have a system set up to "validate" your MAC address after a series of tasks (i.e. installing their version of McAfee VirusScan, updating your OS with patches and updates, etc.) all to ensure security.

I had my computer validated through their policy system. If any computer is not validated then it redirects the user to the registration page, disallowing any unvalidated computer from accessing any other website or URL.

My computer's been running fine since the first day, but just last night I lost the connection. Let me explain why. I brought another laptop from home (my Fujitsu S7010) and tried to get it registered and validated on the network. I used the ethernet connection in my room and when I expected it to redirect me to the registration page, it didn't. It was just stuck on "Acquiring Network Address" and didn't connect.

I gave up and tried my original working laptop, but that didn't work. For some reason, the network is "ignoring" any connection through my ethernet jack. I tried other ethernet jacks with my working laptop and it connects fine.

It seems like now whenever I try to use the ethernet jack in my room, I can't connect. Is there a way ... Read more

I was hoping to find some assistance with a problem.

I have a computer that I just installed Windows XP on and another that I just installed Vista Ultimate x64 on.

I'm unable to get the Windows XP computer to see the Vista Computer.

When I go to "My Network Places" on the XP computer and click the "View workgroup computers" link, I get the following error:

• Both computers are connected by wire to a Buffalo WZR2-G300N router named "Alexandra".
• I've set both of their Workgroup names to WORKGROUP.
• I've run the File and Printer sharing Wizard on the XP computer
• There are no third-party firewalls active on either computer
• Windows Firewall is disabled on both computers
• Both computers have the same username and password and I'm the Administrator on both.
• Both computers can ping each other with no problems.
• I've shared a folder on my XP computer
• All of the necessary Sharing and Discovery Buttons in Vista are Green (On)
• The Vista computer, when I view the map, shows the XP computer, see below:

Here's a picture of how the XP computer is setup on the network:

I'm at a loss as to what I can do to remedy this problem. I would appreciate any help that can be offered.

I have a W2k computer that is having problems with spyware. I have attemted to clean it up a few times this morning but the problem continues to surface. The system is currently stand alone with no access to the Internet and some of the items in the HJT reappear, once I have cleaned it up, even without rebooting. I am wondering what I am missing, possibly a service?

I rebooted the system and gathered fresh log files using HJT and getservice, the getservice log is attached to this message and the HJT log follows. Once the system was rebooted and the logs were gathered, it was left alone.

Hey guys,

I need some advice regarding a small net cafe setup.

I have 5 computers linked to a router.

Now, these computers are designed to be used primarily for poker.

Now, my McAffee license has run out and to be honest they haven't been much help at all (the McAffee Internet Suite) as Spyware is still occuring frequently. Also, I think the McAffee suite is very obtrusive and seems to be eating up bucketloads of RAM which is annoying because you need your RAM and CPU free to perform well for the poker games (otherwise, games will be sluggish).

So with that in mind, I am basically just having to thoroughly run cleans every week to destroy Spyware and delete loads of crap.
ADVICE: Can anyone please advise me of how I should run my little setup? Please, propose a cost-effective solution to this problem and include software titles. It's clear I need a new security suite. At home I use AVG and thats cool but does nothing to protect from Spyware. Also, I was looking around for a program that can disable Internet download and other Windows/Internet features.. But couldn't find a program as such.

Thanks for your help and sorry for my lack of comp. savvy.

I couldn't decide whether to post here or in Hardware so if it needs to be moved please do so.

I have been approached by a friend about starting up a Cyber Cafe'. We are very near no less than five Colleges ( 1Major and 4 Junior Colleges). What I would like is some suggestions on what type of system equipment we would need and if possible some general cost assumptions. I am assuming that I would need individual work stations and some type of server and an operating system for each with networking capabilities. We have the luxury of having three seperate broadban or high speed internet providers so that shouldn't be a problem.

We are thinking about initially having 8 to 10 stations providing online gaming, surfing, email, faxing capabilities, etc. Of course costs are a consideration, so this can and probably will vary.

How about it? Any suggestions out there? Thanks in advance.

Ok, I didn't listen. I admit it and I am paying for it.

I installed combofix and ran it today on my desktop running Vista Pro. (4GB, 1.60GHz). It restarted the OS in mid testing...and now I reboot to a BSOD. (0x00000050) It boots to the login screen just fine, then I login, it loads for a min or two, the screen goes ugly, BSOD, restart. I can boot to safe mode just fine. I ran chkdsk /f /r, no avail and attempted a couple system restores that didn't do much. I ran clean a cleaning program that deleted itself...and still no dice. I'd appreciate any help getting this taken care of. I am humbled oh mighty forum gods. ;)

Until someone else suggests something this
is recommended here:

Quote "Autodesk Homestyler can create diagrams, floor plans (home and office), diagram furniture placement - just about anything that you would need a sketch or layout for.
Using Autodesk Homestyler is fairly easy, with a drag and drop interface, a basic shapes feature, and uncluttered toolbars that can insert images, add text, and add color. You can download and save your creations to your computer, and if you work offline, it has an offline mode.
To save diagrams to your computer, you'll need to use the Export Diagram feature under the File menu. Your diagram is sent briefly to a server, after which a window appears allowing you to save your diagram to your computer in any of these formats: MMD/FMD (editable), JPEG, PNG, SVG, PDF, DWF(alpha) or DWFx (alpha).
Saving diagrams on the Autodesk Homestyler server requires free registration."

I'm fairly capable and am willing to put some work into getting it the way I'd like. Also, if you have "pieces to the puzzle" that would meet requirements, I'd work towards getting them all together. I do have a somewhat quick timeline, though. My requirements and thoughts are:
a no- to low-cost solution (excluding necessary networking hardware)
needs to be able to easily handle up to 25ish connected users without any noticeable issues
WPA2 encryption (I'll have a static key up for display, that may or may not change periodically)
I'd like a landing page upon first DNS request that redirects to an "I accept" type legal page
* this page should continue to display until the accept button is pressed (I'm guessing it'd keep track via MAC or IP, if MAC not possible)* the list of accepted clients should be cleared each night, so they have to accept each day
some kind of automatic block for someone that is on regularly/daily
* the idea behind this is the owners are worried about keeping businesses and business-people in the area from leaching from our free connection without being regular customers* I should be able to easily remove a block in case of a user that is rightfully using the connection

My kids' computer is a compaq presario running windows vista home premium. It is connected to a linksys wireless router which, in turn is connected to a telephony modem (internet/phone etc...). Also running off the router & modem is our machine (XP), a laptop (XP) and a HP wireless printer.

The Compaq (the kids machine) will not connect to the internet via Internet explorer. It had done before, but I cannot get it to do so again. This machine sees all of the other members of the network and is receiving a strong signal, but nevertheless, IE will not connect. The LAN status is connected at 100 Mbps.

I was on the phone with Comcast for 2 hours and we did the whole reset modem/router thing a few times, as well as checked all settings.

We also reset IE & I checked the posts here and followed all suggestions but cannot get their machine online.

I've looked through the forum and followed much, including PING command and trying to reset the winsock (requires "elevation?"). Still no luck

It seems I disabled something but when I connect to any wireless networks that require a browser login, i.e. at a starbucks, hotels, etc I don't get by default their login page when launching any browser (ie, chrome, ff), in most cases I have to type, for me is fine but well i'm not the only one using this machine..

there should be an option somewhere to enable automatic detection, in fact my work laptop automatically opens the login page on the browser..

A:Turning on login script i.e. at Starbucks cafe

1.) Have you tried cleaning all caches and deleting all browser history?

2.) If you try browsing to any website the login page should come up.

3.) Some locations of places do not have things configured properly. Windows will usually give an indication in the bottom right hand corner that the access point requires a login in the browser.
