Folder DEFULT "open" changed?

Q: Folder DEFULT "open" changed?

i have an isseue with the defult action of a folder?!?!.

First i changed an icon in "(none)FileFolder" witch did not chande the folders icon in explorer.

after entering the advanced opetion then exiting it with OK inseted of CANCEL the defult stting "open" from "(NONE)Folder" is non apparent.

usually windows used the defult option from "(NONE)Folder" and just added the options from "(none)FileFolder".

Now even though no defult is set in "(none)FileFolder" it used "(none)FileFolder" first list item (alphabetically) insted of "(NONE)Folder" defult option "open"?

Dose anyboddy know how i can fix thi problem.

Hi, I need to find a fix for this issue I have with a change in Windows 8. I am running Windows 8 Pro and normally (in windows 7 and older) when I Right click on a folder, the default option for properties is "r". Nice and quick and next to my
left hand which rests on the left side of the keyboard. Now it has changed to "o" and not only that, there are 2 options for "o". Open and Properties. Very frustrating and not very easy to get around. Any way of getting around this whether
it be alternative software or reg hack or something... anything. Itsvery annoying.
Cheers

A:Right Click on folder and select "R" for Properties has changed to "O"

Well it looks like the US version oif the upgrade iso/cd is the version that has the r has properties. UK version is O which really doesnt make sense as open is O aswell so you have to press it twice then enter. I like my keyboard shortcuts so US version
is. Problem solved. language to install must read US (English) on the install screen.

Hello all,
I have seen posts about this problem but was unable to find an answer. I am running Firefox 3.6.17 on Windows 7 Pro 64x. When downloading files from the Internet I am unable to "Open" or "Open the containing folder", in other words I can't get to the download. I am running the free version of Zone Alarm and use free AVG anti-virus. I don't recall changing anything in those programs recently. It seems like all the sudden I am not able to download content any longer. It has worked fine in the past. This is a homebuilt machine. What would be the things to try, either in the antivirus or firewall if there were setting changes made there? Barring that are there any other things I could try?
Thanks in advance for all the help.

Is there any reason you are still running version 3.6.17 when version 9.0.1 is the latest? Just curious. It could be something that might be causing your problem.

Hi everyone,
Searched for *.jpg found hundreds under "c:\users\<username>\Searches\Recently Changed" folder, with 0 (zero) byte size, and filenames similar to registry values (see screen capture)
ie. {6B355655-8408-88E7-D828D39B8818} 0 Kb

The problem started out with "Pictures" folder suddenly empty (Note: Pictures on destop are still there). Searched for *.jpg on entire computer (c:\) but did not find what i needed. Did a system restore; still no pictures.

I think i made the problem worst by mistakenly following METHOD 1 & 3 on archived thread "Personal User Folder - Restore Missing Folder" (this was my error because my "Pictures" folder was empty -- not missing) Personal User Folder - Restore Missing Folder (Caution to others: Please read carefully)

Below are steps that may have made my problem worst.
METHOD #3 (part of thread link above)
12. Click on Save, and save the .reg file to the Desktop.

13. Right click on the .reg (On Desktop) file and click on Merge.

14. Click on the Run button in the Security Warning pop-up.

15. Click on Continue (UAC), Yes, and then OK when prompted.

16. When done, you can delete the .reg file(s) (on Desktop) if you like.

17. Log off and log on, or restart the computer to restore the folder.
NOTE: Sometimes you may need to restart more than once for the changes to be applied.

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

From "Owner" or "Documents" or even in the Recycle Bin, on the left-hand side of the screen there is a link that says "Recently Changed". That link goes to a folder which contains a list of files that were recently viewed.

How do I clear this folder without actually deleting the files?

And how do I make it so that Vista doesn't keep a log like this?

I would like to know how do i get the all screen pane again, i like it a lot more.

A:Mouse Middle Button changed it's "show open windows" function

Hello Tomas, and welcome to Seven Forums.

What is the brand and model of your mouse? If we know which one you have, then someone with the same one will be able to help better.

For now, click on the Mouse icon in the Control Panel (icons view) to see if you may have a Settings type tab like in the screenshot below. This will vary depening on what brand you have, and if you installed the mouse's drivers/software.
I have a Logitech mouse, so I get this when I click on my SetPoint Settings tab. From here, I can change what the middle button function will be. This is brand specific though.
Hope this helps for now,

I have a folder that is full of a lot of files including some big .avi, .mp3, .wav files.

Something has happened and I cannot open the folder.

The error message says "folder is not accessible/error performing inpage operation".

I would like to open the folder but I would settle for deleting it. I cannot delete it. The error message says "cannon delete: the folder is not empty".

When I go to props props says it has 0 bytes, 0 files, 0 everything.

When the file is selected (such as to check props) I can hear the drive grinding and it takes a minute of grinding for anything to happen.

I know the folder is still taking up space on my drive because if I go to My Computer and look at free space the space used is the same as before this problem started.

I am using Windows 2000 Professional, 5.0.2195 Service Pack 2 Build 2195.

I have a 42 Gig hard drive NTFS file system.

Need help to either delete this folder and its contents to free up space or open it and get the contents out.

Prior to a few weeks back where I made added a function to the folder file type, it didn't matter if I doubled clicked on a file folder on either the left hand pane or the right hand pane of Windows Explorer, Folder View. Either way opened the folder and displayed in the contents in the right hand pane.

Since I made the change below however, if I click on a folder in the left hand "Folders" pane, it works as before and opens the folder and displayed in the contents in the right hand pane.

However, if I click on any folders in the right hand (files pane) a new windows explorer window opens a displays the "my documents".

This is driving me nuts. The same thing happens if you click on a shortcut to a folder. Instead of the folder opening, it opens a new window and displays "my documents".

This problems started when I added a new function to the folder file folder file type properties to print out the contents of a folder by calling a batch file that piped the content to a file.

In the file association for file folders in the advanced section I now have three functions
- the afore mentioned 'create file list'
- explore (the default), and
- find

For the folder file type I just have:
- explore and
- open

Any suggestions on how to put things back to the way Windows Explorer always worked before make clicking folders in the right hand pane open them up properly in the same window as per clicking them on the left hand pane?

Hi,

I have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons...

This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct. Any help much appreciated.

Thanks.

You may want to reinstall the operating system.

Backupthe files that are importantto you before you reinstall.

The "New" installation will overwrite the current one

If you do not format your hard drive before the reinstall the installation should not harm your files (That's why I suggest backingup your files) and will speed up the installation process.

I use Windows Explorer numerous times every day. I like to navigate to folders using the folders pane and click on items in main view. I sometimes drill down to folders in the main view to finish my navigation until I'm at the folder I wish to see.

All of the sudden I'm finding that when I click on a folder in the main view, a new Explorer window pops up. I did not change any of my preferences in this regard. I went into the Tools-->Folder Options and saw that "Open each folder in the same window" was still selected, as I'd left it long ago (a couple of years now). So, I switched the radio button to the "Open new folder" option, then switched it back to opening the folders in the same view. I clicked "Apply" and closed Explorer (I did this as a kind of "forced" reset). Then I opened Explorer again, and it's still not obeying this setting.

What's going on? Is this influenced by some other settings location I haven't looked at yet?
AFAIK, this started not long after I had uninstalled IE9 and IE8, rolling back to IE7, then installed IE9 again. I did this to resolve a peculiar issue with certain files marked as corrupt in SFC scannow (turns out it's a defect when going to IE9 from IE8). I do realize that Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer share a lot of the same files. But this is functionality exclusive to Windows Explorer. Really strange...

Hey all,

recently I came across alot of themes on the internet and I decided to change my old one, I also replaced my explorer.exe and explorerframe.dll, everything seems to be fine until I tried installing a program or using the "open containning folder" function in firefox download manager.

As for using "open containning folder" function in firefox
a error message will pop out and say "class not registered", once I click ok I cant interact with the download manager (it doesnt freeze, just doesnt response to my mouse right click anymore, double left click still works) and only about 10 seconds later my download folder would pop up.

Not just this, I been unable to download some games that uses a client though I am not sure if it is blocked by my college's firewall or is a problem related to my original question.
does anyone know how to solve this? thanks in advance!

Welcome to the Seven Forums

It is ICO_MYCOMPUTER.ico in explorer.exe in the Icon folder in C:\Windows

You will need a resource hacker of some kind so you can open the explorer.exe and import a new icon in its place. I would recommend getting a copy of explorer.exe and putting it on your desktop and then edit it leaving the original untouched until you rename it using the steps below.
Then you'll want to change the explorer.exe do the following.

Note: I am familiar with the Registry and have used it many times, before you worry
Okay, i want to create a command in my right-click menu, in Windows XP, so, for example when i'm video editing, Web-page desiging and alike, in "my recent documents", i can go to the directory of the file itself, instead of simply opening the file.

Its a simple timesaver really and although everything i use is organised into folders, i sometimes wonder if theres organised and then too organised with many sub-directorys leading to the files i need.

So, in the registry, my first guess was to go HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell

Creating a key named "Explore" and editing it to display the name i wanted in the right click-menu.
Then i created a sub-key, labelled it command, and am working upon what i need to do in here.

I was wondering if anyone could suggest the line i will need, i've been working on it for a while with no luck.
I know the basics, for example explorer.exe is a must, then followed by various commands such as /e,/root, etc etc.

What i'm saying is, i know the commands, just not how i need to structure them to do what i am asking.

Thank you if you can help.

OK, this is my first post here, & I've never joined a Windows forum, or one for people who build their own computers, although I am somewhat familiar with forums, so let me try to give enough info to see if I can clarify my first question & add a few related ones.

I just upgrades a Dell Precision 690 desktop to Vista Ultimate 64, because for some of the work I do in Photoshop CS4, I felt I would benefit from having access to over 3gigs of Ram. The Dell has 2 Intel Xeon 3 gig processors & the compatibility in place to run a 64bit OS, so I bought Vista Ultimate 64, and upgraded to 8 gigs of Ram. That all works fine & I set up several 66 meg files for large format printing the other day, so I'm pleased with the upgrade from that standpoint.

I just need to get used to some pesky details that slow me down & haven't figured them out from searching. I did make my way to the "local group policy editor" and "enable folder options" so this is now giving me my preferred view (details) whenever I open Windows Explorer.

There are 2 related issues I want to ask about. When I open Windows explorer, it opens as a small window & I like to maximize it. It also opens with the folder named after my user name expanded, and the "Computer" folder collapsed. I never store anything in the folder named after my user name, & I store everything in a mapped network drive, that is mapped to show up below the "computer" folder.

Huh, what's going on here.
My computer lets me browse the network just fine and even sees everything there is to see. However, when I want to say, mount a DVD from a networked computer for example, the Network icon is nowhere to be found on the Open File or Folder dialog window.

Going back to the root level (from the path bar in the very same window) lets me see all the usual stuff: drives, homegroup and such but once again, no network.

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I couldn't find any solution to this and it seems like a very silly thing to remove from the OS.

I hope it's just me being blind and I really appreciate any information you guys can share on this subject.

I noticed the shared folder on the Vista PC has the "read-only" attribute selected on its properties. I've tried unselecting the attribute, but it reverts to "read-only" every time I do this. The folder I'm sharing is the "Documents" folder on the Vista PC. All of the files I want to access from the XP laptop are in this folder and I don't want to bother with moving them to the "Public" folder in Vista.

Is it even possible to do what I'm trying to do? That is, access files on the Vista PC from the XP laptop through a wireless home network, and be able to make changes to the documents so they save on the Vista PC?

I have followed several step-by-step guides on file, folder, and printer sharing in Vista, and have changed all the permissions to make sure I'm able to access the shared folder from the XP laptop. I've changed the firewall settings on Norton 360, but that hasn't helped either. I've also installed the LLTD responder hotfix on the XP.

Both computers belong to the same workgroup and the network is set to "Private".

Note: I'm not getting any error messages when accessing the shared folder. The shared printing is working fine without any problems.

Hi i'm no expert on this topic by any means, and i hope someone else can come along with a better explanation than i can, but it seems to me that your system (network) is treating the xp laptop as a 'slave' which can access but not alter data on the main pc, i would check to see if there are any settings that might apply to this, or maybe (just a guess) you may have to sign on as administrator on your xp laptop. like i say it's really not my field but hey, you can give it a go for what it's worth. sorry i can't be of much more help to you.

Hi,

When I convert a file from jpeg to pdf, I usually retrieve the pdf file from the My Recent Documents folder. I can see the document there, but when I click on it, I get an error message stating that, "the item "....pdf" has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly". How do I restore? I can open the ones prior to today only.

Thank you for your expert guidance!

My cousin's computer (windows XP SP2 - admin account) always automatically opens the folder "C:\program files\common\" during startup. How can I stop this from happening? THank you.

A:"common" folder always open at logon

Please back up the Registry before editing

Click Start / Run and type in regedit, click ok

Navigate to the following key:-
HKEY_ LOCAL_ MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Win*dows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Look down the list in the Right Hand pane, scroll down to the value Userinit This value should read: C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.e*xe, (The comma at the end must also be there)

If the value is different from that mentioned above then Right Click on the Userinit value and, from the drop down menu, select Modify. Type in the value C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.e*xe, in the Modify dialogue box click OK

Recently, I had to reinstall Windows XP on my C (System) drive due to an inability to boot due to a corrupted boot.ini file. All programs and folders in the C drive were lost and the registry was badly affected, affecting most of my programs on other drives. Meantime, however, non-program folders and files on my other three drives were pretty much okay. Except for one folder, in particular, that I dearly need! This folder, when I try to open it in MSWord, gives me the following prompt: "The folder... isn't accessible. The folder may be located on an unavailable volume or protected by a password." I had made a shortcut to this folder on my desktop (C drive). Also, the non-C drives were RENAMED in the reinstall. This folder was originally in an S drive; it is now in an E drive. I am not clear why this folder now locks me out. It tells me that "access is denied."

Is it possible to open this folder any way? Is there a trick, program, etc. that will give me access to the files in this folder?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Description
I had recently lend my computer to somebody, like what you might expected next, the machine was screwed up. I had cleaned the malwares away, however the "system32" folder starts to open after logon. I google that a bit, from a microsoft KB article, it seems to be some kind of startup registry misconfiguration... I am stuck at this point, can anybody help me with this? Thanks.

For your information, there is also a odd + minor problem that had exist for a while. msconfig oddly displayed the message,"An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service, You may need to log on using an administrator account to make specific changes." but anyway msconfig still works fine.

Also, note that there were some non-english character in the hijack this log, as i am not using a en-us windows. Those characters, which i had altered and translated into english, are indicated by this:

When I go to the Control Panel and click on Folder Options, all of a sudden it's asking me what program to open it with. What's up with that?! I've never seen this before. I wondered if it is caused by a virus (virus protection recently installed--after the fact--hasn't found anything) or by a recent "Compress rarely used files" routine I may be regretting for other reasons . Ideas?

hey guys, just today, I noticed that whenever i double click a folder, it opens in a new window.  I went to folder properties, and made sure I checked "Open each folder in the same window," and its checked.  I tried switching it on, then off, then restoring all defaults in both those settings and the view settings, and I've tried restarting the computer, even using a system restore point.  No Matter what, whenever I double click a window, it opens in a new window, but if I use the navigation pane, or if I highlight a window and click the open button at the top left, it opens in the same window.  This is very very very annoying, because just navigating my harddrive, I might end up with 20 windows open to reach just 1 file. Does anyone know what's wrong?  or how I can fix this?

A:"Open each folder in the same window" not working

Hi!I'm not sure if this will help, but you can try:

1.Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
2. Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.
3.If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue
4.At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow
When the scan is complete, test to see whether the issue that you are experiencing is resolved.

Hey,

as the title says, I'm getting this problem since like 2 days ago. I'm trying to open my Music folder on my desktop or my whole D drive (with tons of items on it like game installations, music, pictures etc.) but the window that opens is empty and writes in it "This folder is empty". The address bar keeps loading and if I leave it loading (green bar filling), it stops right before the end and the window freezes. When I then click on the window a few times, the whole explorer.exe crashes and restarts, closing the window...

It's driving me crazy as I can't acces the documents on my D drive. When I search for anything on the drive, it finds it and I can use it (pictures open, songs play). So the files are actually there but just aren't loading. I've made sure that the files are not hidden and I've already scanned for malware.

What could be the problem? I'm getting desperate here!

Thanks!

Outlook 2003:I'm a massive fan of outlooks Search folders, I receive in excess of 400 emails per day, of which approximately 250 need my attention, even if to reply back and give someone an answer.

A problem I find is that I am so busy with my emails, I often need to clean out my inbox. I do this by setting up basic search folders such as "all emails from my team which are in my inbox only" or "any email sent to me which was part of a distribution list in my inbox only" etc...

This is great for filtering my mail and I would like to create a rule as such:

"All mail within my inbox which has been either replied to forwarded by myself".

I can't seem to find any options and I'm hoping an Outlook guru can help

If you don't know the answer, can you try googling it for me to see if you can find anything, loads of heads are better one...

I added a slave drive to my Windows XP Pro computer, and it appears to work properly.

However, when I open the "Documents and Settings" folder (on the slave drive E:\, which is Windows XP Home Edition -- not XP Pro), I do not see any of my documents, sub-folders, etc. There should be MANY sub-folders (inside the "My Documents" folder which isn't even visible), with hundreds of documents, jpgs, etc. within it.

When that drive is installed as the Primary drive in my other computer, the User "Larry" (which is me) has all Administrative privileges. On the computer that I'm running now (with the slave drive in it), I also have Administrator privileges. I own both computers.

My User Name "Larry" is password-protected when I login to Windows (when the drive is Primary and installed into my main computer (not this computer with XP Pro).

I've tried clicking on all the users; Administrator, Default User, Larry, Guest, etc. (Note: I get an "Access Denied" error when clicking on the Guest "Documents and Settings" folder).

So, the questions are:

1. Why can't I see any files or subdirectories in the "Documents and Settings" folder on the slave drive?

2. There's supposed to be a folder named "My Documents," but I can't find it. Normally, that path is "C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents".

Your files and folders may have been hidden by the virus, go to folder options and 'show hidden files and folder' to see if they actually are hidden. If they are, you can use Grindler's UnHide tool to 'unhide' all of your files and folders. As for the virus, move this thread to the virus and other malware removal forum in order for it to be noticed by an authorised malware removal member.
Good luck!

Not a major issue, of course, purely cosmetic, but still a minor annoyance none-the-less:

I have a number of card reader drives that I never use (haven't even removed that plastic cover tape from them to help keep the dust out) that show when viewing the "Computer" window that displays drives. Is there any way to hide specific unused drivers from this view? Not remove drive entirely, of course, I may need to use one in the future, but just to hide them so they aren't visible, until I may chose to make them visible again?

Thanks as always,

Russell

Hi Technophobia and welcome to TSF

After looking over extensively your computers situation I have found that one or more of your Windows Files have become corrupted or deleted. To combat this issue we are going to run the System File Checker on your system which is a built in Windows checking utility that checks and fixes corrupted Windows Files. Please follow these steps as best as possible and if you have an issue please post it back in your next reply:

Windows XP Method
Go to Start
Click Run
Insert your Windows XP Disk
Type in the run box " sfc /scannow" (space included)

When the scan is finished please reply back if any files were repaired, or if there was any issue.

Windows Vista Method

Please read these steps CAREFULLY as these steps are much harder then the Windows XP method:
Click on the Vista Start Globe
In the Search Bar type in " cmd"
Right click the cmd search result and choose Run as Administrator
In the Command Prompt type in " sfc /scannow"

Please reply back if this program repaired any files, or if you had any issues reply back with what the error was in your next post.

Hi TechGuy,

I'm having some recent problems on my laptop. When I log-in and start using it, the performance starts slowing down. When I look at the Task Manager, I notice that the task called Explorer.exe takes up a lot of my CPU. In a couple of minutes, I also start getting Internet Explorer windows to pop-up on my screen (I normally use Firefox) with advertisements suggesting that my computer is infected and some software downloads that could help. I recently installed McAfee Total Works, or whatever they call their 10-in-1 software which is supposed to do it all. I ran several scans, and on some of them, if did find and disable the Generic.dx trojan. Even though it claims it is doing something, I don't notice any changes - Explorer.exe continues to bog me down, and the IE windows keep popping up to the point that I cannot use my computer effectively anymore.

Any pointers would be truly appreciated!!

Secondly, I found copies of 2 files named "folder" and "desktop" in almost all folders. The files where identical so I suspect that there is a virus that's propagating this. Is my hunch correct? Is this related to the lovelorn virus or is it another kind? What should I do?

Hi All, Happy New Year!

First time posting... On 1/3/08 i ended up with a bunch of viruses on my computer. From what I can gather they are bad news. I down loaded PC Tools to do a search and found a bunch of Trojans and other nasties...

I have uploaded a screen shot of the PC Tools scan...

In the "C:\Program Files\Video Add On" folder the following can't be deleted:
icmtr.dll
icthis
isfmdl.dll

In the "C:\Program Files\Helper" folder the following was found:
turbosearchsite.dll e404 Module

What is this? Do I need the file in Helper?

Please help!

PS: I am not a techno savvy guy. I kinda know what is going on but only enough to get myself into trouble and not be able to get out! I tried a few things to get rid of them but was unsuccessful.

From what I have seen I will be here for a bit. Thanks in advance.

Please read completely before responding.
I am a 30 year IT pro, most of it as a programmer. I am the geek in charge of a tech non profit org in Hawaii. www.HawaiianHope.org
so yea.. i have at least half a clue.

Here is the deal.
In doing drive copies, data recoveries, etc... when we are moving a mass amount of data from one drive to another we run into this problem a lot.
"Error moving file or folder" -- "directory is not empty"
If you restart the move, it will continue on and keep going, restart enough times and eventually it will move all directories.

I think its a programming issue with windows and wonder if anyone has a work around ?

I have a suspicion that the copy process is getting out of sequence. That it is trying to move a folder before it actually emptied it. Possibilities are :
1) windows forgot its place in moving through and navigating numerous sub directories and it is having a problem with “recursive calls.”
2) Computers with hyper threading or dual core processors are spawning the movement of files across multiple processes, and some are getting ahead of the other.
3) It did actually move the file, but the cache or something in memory has not updated, or the full data write has not completed yet before it tried to move the directory. (delayed write)
Yes, you can copy and then delete the old... Read more

A:"Error moving file or folder" -- "directory is not empty"

This is a known issue. It is by design.

As you may know, moving is in its essence an unsafe process. It would be better to use the actual sequence of copy and then delete.

Ok, I tried some things in other threads but to no avail. But some threads are having my same problems. First this about:blank crap is always my home page even if I change it, as well as these porn links in my favorites list. I've run scans with 5 different virus/ adware scan programs but it doesn't fix it. However, it got even worse-- I can no longer open things like My Computer, My Documents or even Control Panel to try and uninstall software. When I try to open any folder my computer freezes temp. and I get the following message: "DrWatson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

PLEASE Somebody help me. I have hijack this, if that helps. AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Hello buct,

It will require more than 1 round to clean the system. Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seem to abate.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

* IMPORTANT- Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

====================================================

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications as they will interfere with our tools and the removal.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

I just resolved an issue I had with the wireless connectivity of my Acer notebook computer and now I am getting strange error messages. When I try (not every instance) to open device manager I will get the message "Failed to open empty document." From there I will occasionally get "Parser" messages that say "Value creation failed at line 843" or "line 422." I read what I could find about these messages and it points to MMC as the cause. How do I go about fixing this annoying problem if anyone knows?

For some time now, double clicking on a folder no longer opens it as usual. Instead, double clicking on a folder causes a separate Explorer Search window to open, with that folder's name under the "search in" tab. In fact, when i right click on a folder, the first and bold-faced option is "search", as opposed to "open". So to open any folder I have to right click it and hit open, which is slow and annoying. I cleaned out my registry, spyware, viruses, everything, and still this problem persists. I also checked the Mouse control panel, nothing there.

Anyone know what's going on with my computer?

A:Help! Double-clicking on folders prompts "search", not "open"

Hello guys,

I don't know what I did, but nothing happens when I click on those two things in the search bar:

View image: wtf

I reinstalled Windows a few hours ago, and IIRC pressing those with the mouse lead somewhere. Now when I click on them, it does nothing. I have to type in "Settings", so I can click on the actual Windows App. Then I can navigate to those settings. IIRC those results were "clickable".

Can somebody help?

Thanks in advance!

Open I don't think so, Merge sounds like it is added by a 3rd party program, and likely can be removed. Have a look at ShellMenuvVew and ShellExView from NirSoft. You can remove entries with both. But Open will not be listed, and I have seen no way to remove it. A Guy

I have looked around for help on this issue and havn't been able to find a resolution that works. I think because I havn't been able to find any imformation on my specific issue.

I am one of the most computer literate people I know, so when a co-worker mentioned to me that he was having problems with his computer, I agreed to look at it. His problem was simple, he had a lot of viruses. I have cleared most (however I assume not all) viruses and instinces of spyware. The computer worked fine for a little while while I did some final checks on his computer, then the problems started.
He has a Dell Inspiron 710m Laptop, running Windows XP Pro. (Service tag 8sk8091)
As far as I can tell, he has not added or upgraded it in any way. He only has some basic programs.

I know that the issues might have something to do with his wireless.
He is running the Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG.
The computer is getting stop errors (BSOD)

The first one was called DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Stop: 0x000000D1 amd listed the file w29n51.sys (which upon further study, turned out to be a file related to his wireless.)

I have already updated the drivers and reinstalled the program with the latest versions on the Intel website.

I also noticed (though with not frequent) the stop error with the same name and stop code, but which listed the NDIS.sys file (which upon further study turned out to be a system utility).
and now, I have gotten a stop error of 0x0000000A, (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQU... Read more

In any application under Win XP, when I use a Save As or Open dialog box, and click the down arrow next to the location box to search for the folder I want, the application never responds. Usually, I have to click the arrow a couple of times and then it sort of wakes up and responds, or the application crashes (the title bar of the dialog box will say "Not Responding".

Often, in the case of the Save As dialog, it won't say Save As in the upper left corner, only an "S" will appear there.

Seems like a memory issue or else something corrupt in the system. Before I shell out $35 to MS to have them fix something that shouldn't be broken, can anyone help???

I have a home network of five computers where one acts as a common computer ("server") where most data from the other four computers is stored (music, pictures, word processing, movies, etc). All five are running XP Pro SP2.

The "server" had two 80GB hard drives, but SMART was indicating that one was failing, so I replaced it with a 200GB drive. Now, every computer in the house can access the 80GB drive and all of its files but none of the computers in the house (except the "server") can access the new hard drive. I have the file sharing set to full access, and I can view the file folders that are on the drive from the networked computers, they are all listed. But when I click on a folder, I get "Access is Denied." When I mouse over a folder, it reads, "Folder is Empty"

But the folder isn't empty though when accessed from the local computer, only when trying to access it over the network.

I have turned off the Windows Firewall, turned it on again, off again, etc, no change. I have Zone Alarm on all the computers, turned it off, still no change.

Any ideas??? I have over 500 CDs on that harddrive, and I want to listen to music from my other comuters! I'm going nuts here.

A:"Access Denied", "Folder Empty" messages

There are two ways that might work.

1. From a computer other than the server right-click "My Computer" and choose "Map Network Drive". Where is says "Folder" type "\\<ip address>\C$" if you want to share the C partition of that drive (don't type the quotes).
2.
Go to My Computer and and click on the Tools Menu and then Folder Options.

Click the view tab.
Scroll all the way down until you see "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)" and uncheck it.
Click OK.

Now right-click the drive you want to share and choose "Sharing and Security".
Click the security tab.
Click "add" and add "Everyone".
Give "Everyone" the rights you want them to have "Read only" or whatever you want.

I used this "hide a folder" program called "folder lock," and I guess it's buggy because it won't let me unhide the files. It unhides the folder containing the files, but the files are still hidden. They're still there, because when I copy and paste the folder, it shows that the files are being copied, but in the new folder they will be hidden again. Checking the "property" of the folder shows the correct size as well. How can I get windows to reveal them?

The hidden files are listed in this folder called "n|+|-n" or something like that I think, but when I type that in dos or windows it won't let me access them.

PS I contacted the company, but I don't expect a response back any time soon and those files are kind of important.

Thanks!

A:How to "unhide" a folder hidden by a "hidefolder" utility?

Welcome to TSG....

And of course you did not or don't have any backups of these files on any other media?

Actually the only way to gain access to these files is by contacting the manufacturer of the security program ir you would have to learn how to program good enough to bew able to get into the secure area. To the best of my knowledge since this is a security thing and we have no way of knowing whether or not you actually have the rights to get into these files I doubt if you will get much direction toward solving your problem.

Go with contacting the manufacturer of the software.

i used the "like flash disc" method formatting it
then went on deleting, moving & renaming image folders..
i think that was wrong to do..
anyway
when i started the burn process it stopped responding after several minutes..
i had to force restart the machine to eject disc..
then i discovered a specific folder i put in the image is very big in size..
checked it and found the windows has created system files and folders in it
AppData, Temp, Microsoft, ..etc
it couldnt be deleted the easy way
used Unlocker, could just delete few folders then the machine stops responding..
and this repeated useless several times..
used the Safe Mode With Command: RD /S.. it deleted the folder..
but after restart windows normally the folder is still there and keeps creating system stuff..
some programs started using this location to run, like Chrome..
i discovered i lost all my history and cookies and had to reinstall it and its still sticking to the Burn Folder's infected folder..
the folder is growing fast.. i have to to wipe it using command and reinstall Chrome again and again..
i need to burn discs too..

OK. This is complicated; please be patient. Some months ago my PC (Win7 Ultimate x64) suddenly came up with the dreaded "BOOTMGR missing...press CTRL+ALT+DEL to continue..." error message. No idea what caused this; the OS had been operating flawlessly for almost a year. Anyway, I tried using a "Windows 7 Recovery Disc" which I had burned from an .iso file downloaded ages ago. After several unsuccessful attempts to fix the problem with the Recovery Disc, I gave up in frustration and rebooted from the Win7 installation DVD. It of course told me there was an existing Win7 OS on the machine; did I wish to update/overwrite that or install a NEW copy of the OS? I chose "new copy" and installed it. This fixed the problem, of course. Once I was certain all was working (several days later), I used Win7's "BOOTMGR" utility to DELETE this second, unnecessary version of the OS. All still worked fine, but it "shrunk" drive D: and left an "UNUSED" area on the drive (according to the DISKMGR tool). I don't remember the drive letter the install routine created. Anyway, I could not "extend" D: or get back the wasted HD space no matter what I tried. Naturally, in the process I stupidly screwed up something and was back to the "BOOTMGR missing..." situation. I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

The tech guys on that forum were unable to find the source... Read more

Hello there, when the desktop loads up, I get this strange message:

"Open With:

Choose the program you want to use to open this file:

Does anyone have any ideas why?

I have a screenshot of the programs which run at startup:

I have a HiJackThis log if it helps:

A:Windows 7 32 bit, when loading "Open With: ?" "File: Media" comes up

There must be an error with one of the startup settings.
Please use Autoruns by Sysinternals/Microsoft to see more info about Programs loading with your system.
Pay attention to Logon tab.

Looks like for some reason it is trying to load a folder as a file. "Media" is a part of a folder path.
Try to uncheck all values, where Media is a part of the path.

Also, please check for viruses with Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool Download
or Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a free download that removes viruses and malware from your computer

Hi, I'm a new-commer and have been following this thread avidly and taking everyone's advice as I too have identicle problem to Chaz and other bloke i.e my PC (XP) is very slow, shows torch when you open "My Computer" for 15 secs, and when I use Explorer takes ages to find a web address so I'm using Firefox which is fine. Been bothering me for months, tried RWnewson's registry and didn't work. i don't have. Created shortcut direct to C drive to bypass "My Computer" delay however while this works, PC is becoming worse as when I move any files from one folder to another within the C drive the PC can;t cope and stops responding. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanc ed]
"NoNetCrawling"=dword:00000001 anyway.
My computer is not part of a home network nor does it say searching when I open My computer. This did all start when I installed software for new digital camera and webcam. Uninstalled cameras but still runs slow. Bugger.. Help. Tried registry cleaner and various virus killers. There is nothing threatening.
Interestingly when I end process for sychost.exe everything works fine but then Windows closes down in 30 seconds. PLEASE HELP!!!!

A:XP "My Computer" and "Explorer" taking ages to open

assuming you ran spyware and adaware cleanups, i would suggest reinstalling windows..... Windows (every version) will eventually slow down and not respond, act very unstable, not cooperate, and eventually it will commit suicide and give you major blue screens. then the computer has problems booting... a reinstall (a fresh reinstall preferebly) would probably fix it.....

could you post your system specs? that may help a little bit...
