Tech Problem Aggregator

No need for E dive anymore

Q: No need for E dive anymore

I had a problem a while back because of malware which meant I couldnt use any USB ports and my computer completely became redundant.

This problem meant I couldnt connect to the internet, and couldnt come to the Tech Support Forum for help, so a friend of mine had the idea to partition the C drive into C & E, E being the old problematic drive and C the new part.

This allowed me then to connect to the internet via the C drive so I coudl get to the HJT forum to get help, and as expected the forum helped me out.

Now I wont to clear that E drive away, leavingme with just the c drive, as I think Ive got everything I need from there now and placed on my now C drive.

Can somebody help me do this, and if there anything I can do with a scan to help you identify things first that isnt a problem at all.

Whilst getting help this time around, a professional in the HJT section mentioned I had a double boot system, this is new to me and just thought id mention it just in case it mattered.

Thanks

Lee

A: No need for E dive anymore

Hi Lee !

Right-click my computer => manage => disk management. Expand the window and post a screenshot of it here. To post a screenshot press the print screen key, go to start => all programs => accessories => paint, click edit => paste, then save as .jpg. Attach the image file to your next post using the manage attachments button from the advanced mode.

Then open windows explorer, navigate to c:, go to tools => folder options => view. Check "show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "hide protected operating system files" and "hide extensions for known file types". Double-click the boot.ini file (or open it in notepad) and copy/paste its content here.

Before we proceed further be warned that it can be risky to merge 2 partitions (C and E) when one of them (C) holds the system. If something goes bad you can lose all the files that are on one or those partitions and you may even end up with a non-bootable computer. I would advise that you backup all your valuable data on CD's and make sure you have your install disk ready just in case.

I put in a SSD drive about a week ago and I have no data on it. So I highlighted the root directory and I have 26 GB then I right mouse click the C drive and it says I used up 34 GB and I have 10 GB which make up my win.sxs. I have a 60 GB drive so I'm getting nervous about using up too much space and I think your good until you reach 90% but it's been a long time since I was a tech.

"... Constant pop ups for virus software, etc. Also puts a red overlay on my desktop.. I ran both Adaware (lava) and Spybot in safemode... did not help.
Deleted "priviacy_danger file from c/Windows/privacy_danger.. it recreates the file in the same path... creepy."

I got the above off another post on your site as a result of a google search for "Deep Dive." It's a great description of what something is doing to my computer. I downloaded Spybot and am running it now (not in safemode), and Deep Dive already popped up. I do have the udefender.com and privacyprotector.com websites popping up continuously, with an ugly red desktop, just like the guy in the quotation above. If I close windows explorer, I don't get the yucky pop-ups, so I've just been using the task manager to run programs since I can't use my desktop or start menu bar.

I don't know what "HiJack This" is.

What do I do?

Thanks so much!

About three weeks ago, my computer rather suddenly lost its spunk. I use it for both gaming and school work (with the former taking sudden precedence as I have graduated and entered the world of joblessness). It was a moderately powerful system, handling most programs thrown at it with barely a hiccup. Now it struggles with programs for which it far exceeds the minimum specs, and any game released in the last three years is out of the question. It even gasps for breath when I visit script-intensive websites in Firefox or try to play high-definition videos from the internet. Several Flash applications that used to run fine will choke up my system.

I've done all the obvious things to see if I can squeeze out all the performance I can get - I've scanned with AdAware, AVG8 for viruses, A-squared for trojans. I downloaded the TweakGuide Total Codex (user-friendly guide to working with Windows) and followed much of the advice within, I downloaded the program Autoruns to stop most of the auto-starting programs from auto-starting (leaving only what seemed to be necessary for Windows and hardware running). I even uninstalled and updated my video driver. The one obvious thing I haven't done is update Windows, because the Windows automatic updater was the cause of constant crashing a few months ago. But until I hear of some horrible bug in Windows that causes it to devour system hardware from within after exactly 17 months of running, I'd like to stay away from that avenue altogether.

Hello to All on the forum.I want to try the dreaded windoows 10 because like you all out there I am being harrased by microsoft to upgrade for FREE! Nothing in life is FREE you pay for it one way or another and in their case it will by snooping on us in a way thats unpresedented. Putting that aside they as usual have us by the short and curlys. Even though the daily pop-ups say that my computer is fully compatible and all will be ok, I know full well that they are lieing to us (as usual) They just want our info at any cost (to us that is) Microsoft are just like our goverments they pretend to be on our side but really they are only after our money and information so that they can squeeze even more out of us. So now that we are all educated about them, can ANYONE HELP ME, DIRECT ME TO A LINK FROM HP THAT CAN INTERIGATE MY COMPUTER TO DETERMINE WHAT DRIVERS I WILL NEED UPDATING BEFORE I TRY TO INSTALL WINDOWS 10.MY MODEL NUMBER IS NOT SUPPORTED ACCORDING TO MICROSOFT TECKNICAL EVEN THOUGH THE POP-UPS SUGEST I WILL BE OK. A:Before I dive into windows 10 can anyone...

Getting past or disregarding some paranoia on your part (others might agree), WIN 10 does record many aspects of our daily lives. If your life is so stressed, I would suggest you keep WIN 7 (it's viable until 2020). I had Live Mail, **bleep** killed access. I had to change the password and use OutLook (hate it). It was then that I learned that Microsoft kept a list of all the passwords I had ever used for Live Mail. Now to answer your real inquiry:Compatability report for Windows will run a full scan on all powered-on and connected devices. Looking on HP's website I did not find any WIN10 drivers. If you were to try WIN 10, be aware you only have 30 days to decide before the roll-up option to WIN 7 expires.  (file "old.windows).

I'm new to the board, I stumbled across it while researching a problem. A few days ago I began having problems with a "buffer overflow" that would not allow me open Internet Explorer. I downloaded a patch that allowed me to get back into Internet Explorer. However, now everytime I reboot my computer Windows Explorer automatically comes up with a file named "helper.sig" in C/Program Files/Common. After running a McAfee virus scan, it found a program called DeepDive. I checked for McAfee to delete this (which it did) but Windows Explorer still comes up everytime I reboot. Other than this, I am not having any problems with my PC, but am a little concerned that something could be going on behind the scenes that I don't know about. Is there a way to have programs stored in the RAM, similar to how a hard stores data, so upon startup, all the files required for the program to run (i.e. google chrome) are (moved) in the RAM, so when required the program will start almost instantaneously. The past few days, my PC (see specs below) has been hating the Internet.

It began pretty much when the AWS cloud crashed, although I have no interests therein - probably just a coincidence.

Since then, my connection is very spotty, and videos especially, only load partially. My wife's PC and my laptop (WinXP and Vista respectively) are both still working fine, so I'm perplexed.

It seems like my initial connection to a site is fine. Then, as I DL data from that site, it starts hanging. all sites are like this. Google, FB, last.fm, anything - especially going back to a page that refreshes upon a new view, it tends to hang there for a while - anywhere from seconds to many minutes.

I've tried downloading a couple of files from file sites, and they stop in the middle. watching a video on YouTube or Vimeo or anything else, the video buffers a bit and then stops at a random point. sometimes, I can click ahead in the time bar and it will play on, but absolutely zero videos will finish, even if left for an hour. and this is in Firefox, Chrome and Opera.

I've made 2 changes to my software/OS:
1) downloaded Win7 SP1.
2) added a Steam game and now I see a lot of .net Framework Optimization going on in the process list.
3) EDIT: I also updated my nVidia graphics drivers by about a month (although I can't see how that would affect connectivity)

I've searched all over google and don't see anything that works for me - a lot of fixes seem to involve IE, which I've ... Read more

When trying to create a system image using Windows 'Backup and Restore' to my external hdd I get the following error:

Backup failed.
The drive cannot find the sector requested (0x8007001b)'
This wasn't occurring until after I did a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium.

Any help will be appreciated.
James

A:Can't Create Dive Image

How far into the backup process did this occur?

I would guess this error is from the source drive (the drive(s) to be backed up) as I would think System Image looks a that the volume's bitmap, collects all the sectors that need to be written, and then writes them to your USB output drive as a "sequential" file (only used blocks written, butted up next to each other, no freespace). IOW, there are "direct" sector/cluster reads of the source drives and the output is simply written to a .vhd file of which the I/O is handled by a standard Win API.

I tried the Computer Management and the only option that is given me is to delete the partition. Hi I have a 80gb hard drive in my compaq presario. I recently formatted due to very laggy poor performance from the computer. I tried all the programs for cleaning it up but still lagged. It was getting close to capacity and even after taking it down to only 70% used still lagged.

I did a complete wipe using Drive Scrubber, 35 wipe method. Reinstalled windows xp and installed all my stuff. I have been using it a couple of months and it has been working fine. I downloaded a bunch of DVD files and pretty well filled it again. Once it got close to being full it once again lagged down. I cleaned off what I could, down to only 40gb used but still slow.

Is it possible the end of the drive is faulty and once I use that part it makes the whole thing go screwy. Are there any hard drive repair software that I could use to verify it. Or should I just buy a new drive. I used defrag and chkdsk, but still didn't help. I have also used.... HJT, CCleaner, Spybot S&D, Adaware, Mallwarebytes malicious software removal, and I am running avast home edition

Thanks

I altered the contents of the second partition on a brand name software installation on the drive that came with the computer at all. It is there as a backup and has all the data necessary on it to restore everthing on the C partition to the way it was originally when the computer was new and untouched by the user. Even if you merely add to the data on that partition, a Rescue or Restore procedure may not even run because the checksum of the data on the partition is different from what it should be.
I suspect the data on that partition was modified such that Setup found the drive partition to be a viable Windows partition.
When you deleted the contents of what was the C partition, Setup found enough on what was the D partition to assign the logical C drive letter to it, since the original partition assigned C no longer existed at that point and the logical drive letter C was available.
Setup will not assign C to a Windows partition if that C drive letter has already been assigned to what Setup found to be a viable Windows partition, so it assigned the next available drive letter - D - to what Setup considered to be the the new, second, Windows installation.

I've had a couple of machines lately, that when a user tries to run Word or Excel, the program is for EVER in opening up, and then stops responding. Office 97 is the version. It's almost like your running it on a machine 1/2 across the world.

Have there been bugs with this version, that patches are required. I have Office 97 on several PC's, but for some reason, I've had 2 in the last week or two take a nose dive.

Rebooting the PC seems to make the symptom go away.

A:MS office taking a DIVE

Office97 is one of the best MS ever made. There is something else going on - I suspect malware of some type, or a conflict with something (provided this version of Office is not D/L'ed from the InterNet and corrupt itself). You need to do a detailed analysis of the system to figure out what is going on. (Could be security patches from MS)

Hi,

Last few days my broadband has been slow. I've had a couple of trojans and worms put into quarantine, using ewido, thinking that was the cause but it made no difference.

I've done a speed test and my download speed is 178 Kbps and upload speed is 242Kbps. My broadband is supposed to be 512. I don't understand a lot about these figures but other than the trojans and worms, I can't think what's made my broadband speed so slow its an effort to download one page sometimes! A 5mb file download takes as long as dial up.

I just changed my mother board from a PII 233 to a P III 800 mhz. I have a WD 4 GB HD (O/S disk) and an IBM 18 GB HD as the slave (data disk). In the old system, I had to install a drive overylay for the Bios to detect the 18 GB drive.

The computer wouldn't load Windows 98 after putting in the new motherboard, and chip, so I took it in to a professional.

Before I did, all of my data on the 18 GB drive was visible in DOS, but when I got it back, I was able to install windows on the C drive, but now the 18 GB drive isn't being recognized in DOS or Windows, even though it is being recognized from the BIOS when the computer boots up.

I tried to run the IBM disk manager to remove the Dynamic drive overlay, and when I did it said that no overlay was detected.

The technition said that he did nothing to the D-drive, but I really don't know what was done.

Do you have any suggestions on how I can get windows or DOS to recognize the 18 GB drive?

Hello all, I am new to the forums and have a question. Right now I seem to be at an impasse. I have never overclocked before but ever since hearing about it have wanted to try it. But before I do I have several quick questions. Right now I am runing a Dell mobo so I would need to buy a new one in order to OC from the bios. I already have one picked out, but I also do want to get myself a Razar Naga mouse and I can only get one or the other at the moment so I want to make sure I make an informed choice. The CPU I am currently running is a Wolfdale E6500 @ 2.93 ghz, which is its stock speed. I upgraded from the stock dell processor that came with my Inspirion 530s and noticed a big difference. But what I am wondering is how big a difference overclocking will actually make.

Right now I mainly play WoW, and from what I understand it is more CPU intensive then GPU, so I figured that a slight overclock would be pretty beneficial, with the new expansion coming and upgrades visually to certain parts of the game I want to run it was smoothly as possible on my budget. I do say a slight overclock because I have never done so before and dont want to get out of hand. From what I understand the CPU I have is a great overclocker, but I dont know if my expectations are too high since my knowledge of overclocking is trivial.

So, to summarize, do you think that overclocking may be beneficial in my position, and if so, how much might I need to overclock to see any real gains in a game lik... Read more

A:Overclocking newbie a bit confused if I should take the dive

i wouldn't bother, that processor is plenty capable for what you need it for... so why risk it?

overclocking is, by all means, not a difficult procedure but if you're new i would advise you to do some searching for a similar configuration and see what each setting does. there are quite a few message boards besides TS that specialize in OC configurations and support. please keep in mind that your cooling system plays one of the biggest (if not the biggest) roles in overclocking, so read up on different cooling options as well if you plan on giving it a try.

Running xp home & not sure if I should have posted here...but I keep seeing this deep dive adware on startup and my Stopzilla catches it but seems doesn't completely remove it. SZ does keep it from infecting the pc and I purge the quarantine window and restart and it appears all clean. Ran it again behind the initial scan & nothin' shows up. Also ran ms malicious software removal tool & nothin',as well as win defender & they do not even see it. When I shut down for the nite and in the morning as SZ starts there it is. So can anyone suggest a solution thats been proven??????? Maybe it should be moved to security section?

Hi, I have a question about partitioning. I have a Seagate 160 gig 7200 rpm hardrive. Currently its partitioned into two drives one is 128 gigs and the other with 21 gigs. I want to regain some of that lost gigs and maybe make it into one drive. I have a software that can repartition hardrives. But i wanted to know if i do partition, will i lose any of my data i have saved on the harddrive.

A:Hard Dive Partition Problem

A lot of guys swear by PartitionMagic and it can change partitions without losing Data ,but you should always backup before attempting such a major task.
I do not use this type of software, because it remains in the MBR/Windows services, etc. and in my experience ,can come back to haunt you.
I prefer to use basic partitioning programs .Just an opinion.
If that HDD is going to be your Primary ,are you sure you want to have just 1 Main partition?
It is always better to seperate you O/S from Data and Programs espeacially in a Windows box.Read this post...

I have a problem with my Seagate 500GB Barracuda 7200.11 SATA.

I have no clue how this problem happen. I just simply went to start, click shut down, waited for windows to shut down and it did normally. no problems , no error messages, nothing. the next day, I turn on the computer and it was asking for a boot device or something bootable. I do not know what happen.

Seagate is NOT helping me with my problem. I wrote to them through email and the tech or whoever was working on emails their gave me a superiorsmart response of linking me to the troubleshooting FAQ guides after I wrote I already answered and followed the steps of what was written on their website's FAQs. Their guide leads me too microsoft's website about taking out any USB pens during rebooting.

I had no choice but to buy a new hard drive.

my drive is not being recognized by the vista boot disc and it's not being shown in BIOS. The drive is still vibrating. The vista boot disc is asking for the drivers so I have done major research on what I need drivers for. I need drivers for the SATA on my motherboard I think.

I have a Biostar TP55 Ver. 6.x motherboard. I went to the website and searched for something that had drivers for the SATA on this board.
hxxp://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/driver.php?S_ID=443

I downloaded the chipset and installed it.
I then downloaded "Intel Serial ATA AHCI/RAID Controller" for vista x86 (I'm guessing it's the SATA drivers that the boot disc is asking for), open the zip ... Read more

I have about 500 empty directories on my c: drive with names like the ones pasted below. I believe a failed Quicken install left them there. Anyway, normally this would be no big deal, but in this case, they are all at the root level and it makes my "real" directories hard to find. I've tired several things to get rid of them. Here's an example of one of my attempts from an Administrators command shell:

dir *.tmp
. . .
09/11/2015 04:51 PM <DIR> QuiFAC7.tmp
09/11/2015 04:51 PM <DIR> QuiFAC8.tmp
09/11/2015 04:51 PM <DIR> QuiFAD9.tmp
0 File(s) 0 bytes
501 Dir(s) 1,337,724,145,664 bytes free

C:\>rmdir quifad9.tmp
Access is denied.
C:\>takeown /f quifad9.tmp /a
SUCCESS: The file (or folder): "C:\quifad9.tmp" now owned by the administrators group.
C:\>rmdir quifad9.tmp
Access is denied.

I've tried it with PowerShell and with the "hidden" Administrator id, no luck. I also tried to change the security setting for the c: drive itself, also with no luck. Do any of you have a PowerShell script or something similar which will remove these annoying empty directories?

Hi Y'all,

I'm looking for help for a problem that's been bugging me for two days. I've noticed that ever since I installed an upgrade of Windows 7 from Vista, I've "lost" 250 gb hard drive out of 1 tb hard drive.

Both Disk Managment and Acronis Disk Suite show the proper amount of 915 GB, but for the life of me I can't figure out where the rest of the drive disappeared to.

Any help and suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

When I play a game like firefall, my frame rate periodically drops to unplayable levels. When it's not in this state, everything runs perfectly. Every min or so, it'll take a nose dive and stay that way for a few mins. I happens when i play tf2 also, but waaaaay less frequently. Maybe every 10 mins or so. Could it be some sort of conflict? A:Framerate takes a nose dive!

It could possibly be an overheating problem. When my 9800GTX++ was having this issue, I took off the heatsink and cleaned off the thermal paste, and replaced it with Arctic Silver thermal paste. After that, I had no issues and was actually able to overclock the card without issue.

Before trying this^^ I would try downloading the latest drivers for you card on NVIDIA.com and then, during the installation, select Custom Install, and then tick the "perform a clean installation" checkbox. This will completely remove all profiles, drivers, and software preferences before installing the new drivers.

Also, be sure to DISABLE VSYNC from the video options menu of your game. It may be causing these periodic framerate drops.

well my computer is like 6 years old, maby, and i have been experinceing some problems, and i want to back up my hard drive onto dvds and reformate my hard drive.

but im having a problem choosing what is the best to use, so i dont mess up anyhting, by it corrupting the data of my old computer.

anyways... i need to ask what it the best program to use for backing up my hard drive to dvds.

what would be the best?

thanks-

A:Back Up Hard Dive Software?

You could use either Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost and create an image of your drive. Then, after reformatting, you could restore the drive to exactly what it was before reformatting.

The trouble with this method is that I cannot see any advantage to reformatting and doing this because you will have exactly the same installation after formating as you did before.

If you want a clean install and only want to backup your data at this time, I would use Cobian Backup (freeware). I have used it for many years and it is a very good program.

After the Cobian backup, you could reformat the drive and then reinstall all your program files.

Then reinstall all your data files from Cobian and at that time you should have a clean re-installation.

Hello,I'm in urgent need of help, I can't do anything with my laptop.About 20 days ago, while helping my son do research on gambling and addiction for his final, I was infected by visiting one of the gambling sites. The infection would not let me run adaware, spybot sd, ccleaner, it wouldn't even allow me to use System Restore. If I tried to search using Google, Yahoo or Bing on IE or Firefox, I was automatically redirected to whatever it wanted to send me to. I happened to also have Opera, and luckily that was immune to the redirects, so I searched for and downloaded Malwarebytes. It would not allow me to install it though. So I downlaoded it again and changed the name. By doing that, I was able to install and run it. It found 30 or so things, and I removed them. But there were 2 that it could not remove, it said that it would remove them on reboot. One was iexplore and the other might have been userinit(or a shorter name that started with a U) So I rebooted, and ran Malwarebytes again, but the one infection that started with the U was still there. It didn't bother me too much. But after a few google searches using Firefox(I couldn't use IE at all withut being redirected), the redirects would start again, but all I had to do was run Malwarebytes, it deleted all by that one infection and then I'd be sort of okay again. But then yesterday, suddenly Opera was affected by the infection and I couldn't search when using it without being redirect... Read more

1. download of full guide in case you do not have it
http://www.acronis.com/en-gb/support/documentation/legacy.html

2. I maybe wrong, as I do not use Acronis - I do not like it, but of course that is only my opinion
I do not think TI11 can back up GPT

3. I presume E is the external
if so how does that drive come to be partitioned GPT as the attachment suggests it is
the location is E

4. I do not think the rescue media will boot on a UEFI GPT so if you have to change to legacy boot then it cannot restore a GPT drive

5. I mentioned that I do not like Acronis - one of the reasons is that you just have to work so hard to find the relevant info
As far as I can see 2014 was the first version to fully support GPT and WinPE4 which is needed to boot on a UEFI - for rescue
and I do NOT think the Acronis TI11 will boot a uefi

WinRT tables and other PC metro apps are still actually run partially by Win32. That's the reason Microsoft wants to cover the desktop. Think about it, all computers are run by processes held on the computer, so no matter how hard they try, Desktop will be inevitable. Windows may end up on a blank wallpaper in a metro app in almost 4 years but they have to live with it. Processes cannot stay hidden, comment your feedback!

A:Kill it! Win32 takes a dive for death.

I think you have a serious misunderstanding of how operating systems work, and in particular how Windows works.

Win32 is not the native OS for a computer running Windows. The native OS is now called the "Windows Kernel Services" but was originally called NTOS, and it's what's known as a "micro-kernel" or "supervisor". This native OS runs subsystems, one of which is Win32, although there have existed several others, including an OS/2 subsystem, an Unix subsystem, a Posix Subsystem (they are different) and of course now Metro.

It's certainly true that there are interactions between Win32 and Metro. But i'm not sure why you insis that Metro apps are run partially by Win32? What's "partial"? Can you back any of this up?

A:windows nt4 would wish to convert logical dive to physical c-drive

Use Partition Magic to delete the logical drives and resize the "C" partition. It will take a few hours and you should backup all data prior to starting. If you have a server that can hold quite a bit of data, I would use ghost to image the c partition, then use partition magic to resize. The ghost image would be your fail-safe. If you have an unattended install setup for NT4 WS, then you can use that to create up to an 8Gig c drive and then ghost the image back on it.

I have a 16GB Cruzer Blade flash drive. I synched all my music into it by Genre, with Windows Media Player(Vista): "Blues", "Guitar", "Fifties", and so forth..about 9GB total. While the total available after synch seems to be correct, only half of the Genre actually show up in Vista, so I can't drag-and-drop to play them. They will work in the older Windows XP..everything displays as it should. Is this a problem with Vista, or the filing system? Greetings,

I've searched through the forums and have found similar topics, but none that describe exactly what I've got going on.

Last night, my Western Digital external hard drive disconnected from my HP Pavilion laptop. I wasn't home when it happened, but I believe it fell from the USB cable and onto our (carpeted) floor. Not sure if the computer was on or off when it happened (my wife was using it), but I believe it was restarted at some point without the drive in.

I then tried turning off the laptop and re-plugging the drive, and while the drive still lights up and hums, the computer only sees it as an "unknown device." It doesn't seem to be as active inside as it usually is, but I can still detect some movement when the computer first starts up. The drive has disconnected before while the computer has been on, but normally I've been able to plug it back in just fine.

It doesn't show up in My Computer, nor is there any "Safely Disconnect" icon in the tray. It's not in "disk management" in My Computer either. It doesn't work in any of the other USB ports, nor did it show up while plugged into another laptop. I switched USB cables (no go there either), and also tried hooking up my printer to the laptop--that did work. So, it's something with the drive itself, not the USB port.

I've tried reinstalling it and detecting new hardware, and again, the computer either can't find anything, or ... Read more

You might try taking the drive enclosure apart and using
a usb adapter to connect it,or hook it up directly in a desktop
if you have one.
Sound like the enclosures controller got messed up and the drive
may be ok.
Here is a possible adapter type to use.

I have no clue what the issue is but every file i delete from my ext HD it stays in the recycular folder but remains in their. i also have system file which will allow me to delete it or place it somewhere else. i dont know what caused this at all but its annoying cause all the files i dont need in the bin just stay their. ive made changed to my recycular bin that all delete files go to their but still it will allow them to be deleted. anything i can do??

thanks

A:External hard dive wont Delete files?

Trying to fully understand the problem.

So, if you delete a file from a folder, the file does delete and works it's way to the Recycle Bin. You can see the file in the bin, however you are unable to "Empty The Recycle Bin?"

Also, do you have any third party applications running that are designed to protect the Recycle Bin. If I recall, Norton has/use to have, something like that.

Hi everyone,A few days ago, I suddenly couldn't update AVG anymore. It always gives me an error, telling me the connection with the server failed. I also noticed that I can't connect Limewire (P2P program) anymore and opening movie streams in Windows Media Player doesn't work anymore either.I searched some forums for a solution and I found someone with a similar problem, who also told he couldn't execute the "cmd" and "regedit" commands anymore. I tried it on my own computer and I can't run those things anymore either. When I try executing them, the explorer goes all weird and shuffles the program bars on the task bar.I've manually downloaded the latest updates for AVG, installed them and did a full scan, that didn't find a thing. I also ran AdAware, which said I had some malware, which I removed with it. Then I also ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, which found some more malware, so I removed it, rebooted my pc, but the problems still exist...I'm hoping someone can help me with this problem, because it's really anoying...Here's my HijackThis log:Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 20:37:26, on 11/05/2009Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16827)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\At... Just recently I started to have a problem where my processor speed would drop from its usual standpoint (1.9GHz) to this (600MHz). I can't play any games with it all the way down there and I have no clue what is causing it. I have never had this problem before and the only significant changes I have made recently would be a change to Spyware Doctor Antivirus as my main Anti Spyware/Etc program.

Hi everyone, this is my first post, thanks for reading. My new HP laptop runs Windows XP 32 bit. I have repeatedly contracted virtumonde and vundo in the past 6 months, and in past episodes I have used the factory-system restore CD to reset my hard drive and system settings, thereby erasing the virus. But earlier this week, I ended up with Vundo again. I have used Avira, Spybot, and Malwarebytes, but as I've learned through experience, they delete instances of vundo, but do not remove the root cause. Malwarebytes pulls up 7 files on each run, each named Trojan.Vundo.H or Trojan.Vundo.BOH or Trojan.VundoThis episode seems to be more complicated than earlier occasions. After performing a full restore, and before reloading software onto my machine, I plugged in my external hard drive - then Vundo infected my system again. It is completely impossible for me to reformat my external hard drive, as I have legally binding and career crucial documents on the external hard drive. I have run those programs on the external hard drive as well, and it does discover Malware files. If it might help, I have a mac computer as well, so if there is any way to run an antivirus program from the mac to clean the external hard drive, I can do that.Any help you can offer would be astoundingly appreciated. Hello.

I have a Seagate 2 TB hd that just disappear sometimes...
I can be using folders and programs on the HD and it just disappear.

To "get it" back i need to shut down my computer, not just restart but actually shut it down, enter BIOS, i don't need to do anything in BIOS, just check so my HD is listed and the i can restart and *woops* there it is again, for some time.

it is totally random when the HD will disappear, sometimes it takes just minutes, sometime it takes hours...

I have posted some pictures, the first three is just after the HD has disappeared then a BIOS shot and the last three is after the reboot...

I have been having some problems with it. I recently found that I had a virtumonde virus on the computer, after speaking to the IT guys at my job they told me what to do to remove the pesky little problem. I thought that I did the right thing cause it started running instead of freezing on me when I turned it on. But what I realized is that now the computer is working alot slower than before. I ran Ad-Aware, and Spybot and they located some critical things on the computer. I also had a pop up about mdmcls32.exe. I checked on the computer to see what it was.. Found out that its a trojan. I'm just tired right now of all this crap. Can someone please help me. I've deleted some from the registry and I've ran Spybot more than 1 million times. I don't know where to post this now. I have no clue anymore what is wrong with this system. With the money I have wasted into this thing I could have bought a top of the line gaming rig by now. But now its too late to just pull out and leave this thing alone.

Anyways suddenly I am getting this problem(problem number 156?).

This is how it started: I updated my video card drivers to the latest ATI drivers 9.12. I started playing the game DIRT2 for a couple hours. I finally closed down DIRT2 and suddenly I was getting this problem: The PC would get a split second freeze every couple of seconds. Along with this split second freeze is coupled with this High Pitched Looping sound like when a program locks up and you get that looping sound until you can close out the program. This freeze up is basically noticable in the form of the mouse freeze up for a split second, then it moves again and then split second freeze again.

Ok, that is just the start of the problems. I am also suddenly having random issues with connecting to the internet via my wireless. Before this problem occured I was able to connect flawlessly. My wireless adapter will be displayed as "Connected" as always but I cannot open a web browser page. My windows live was still connected for 10 minutes one time while I was trying to figure why I can't connect to firefox. Then suddenly windows live crashed!

I thought that my problems were coming from the faulty hard drive that I jus... Read more

Hopefully someone can help me out because I am a novice when it comes to computer skills. In the last few weeks or so my internet has been acting up and keeps crashing on me witha message reading that I have had some serious error and needs to close, allowing me to report it to microsoft. I ran AVG 8.0 (Free edition)and Spydot. They seemed like they got rid of things and everyone was going okay but my internet was still acting up.

Now, in the last few days that problem has gone away but I believe have malware on my computer. I keep getting pop ups from avg saying trojans like Vundo.FJ and BHO.HYT are on my computer and should be fixed, which AVG supposably does.

Currently, I keep getting new windows of internet explorer opening, kind of like popups, that I never did anything to that are from really random sites. I am not sure how that helps but I figured I would throw it in here.

From my little knowledge of computers I used "run" with msconfig and noticed that in my startup it says that I have these three things that I know should not be there. They are:
1. ruyopaku
2. tukuhegu
3. hagijifa or metadomo (It keeps changing between the two for some reason)
They are all rundll32.exe, whatever that means.

This is what I did to get rid of it, besides running my two spy programs, so hopefully I didn't screw anything up.

Hi there,

I have an old Dell XPS M1530 and wanted to salvage the hard drive, buy an enclosure and use it as an external hard drive. This is what i typed in:

select disk 0
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
format fs=ntfs quick

Do i need to do anymore? or can i just put it in an enclosure and use it as a hard drive? and will i have the 320 GB on the drive to use?

A:Do i need to do anymore?

I think you are OK.

But I'd go back into diskpart and look at the results.

Probably with these commands

List disk (should show disk 0)
Select disk 0
List part (should show partition 1)
Select part 1

Do you see a part 1 with the expected size?

If so, you are good to go, but you can always recheck in Windows Disk Management after you get it connected.

I'm not sure, but I don't think you have to assign a drive letter in diskpart.

I've been trying to get rid of this problem:

When my computer goes Idle my Connection drops.
I Just closed Firefox and my connection dropped.
It drops randomly and constantly ( weird huh ) every 20 minutes or random browser closes.
It happened about 4 or 5 months ago, then went about 2 or 3 months with out the problem, now its back!

My equipment:
HP Pavilion Desktop. Vista (forget the model)
Westell 2200 Modem
Linksys WRT54G2 Router (i don't use wireless)
Also i Use a wired Xbox 360

Here is the thing though:
When my PC drops connection I am still able to get online and play with my friends on Xbox Live, So I don't think it is the Modem or Router, it has to be a cord or my computer or something.. Anyway I'm getting really tired of it because every time i want to use my PC I have to reset my router to restore the connection. Anything helps!

P.S. Everything is Wired at ALL times and it Still says its connected but i cant get online, And when i go into my Status it says 356 Million Bytes received, i don't know if that means anything.

I have tech service through the ISP I have. I noticed that Chrome was running kind of sluggish and figured, since it was there, I contacted tech support. The tech removed Malwarebyte, Super Anti-Spyware, Advanced System Care, two registry programs I had and Baidu browser and Baidu Speed up. He said almost everything could be done with programs already available in Windows 10. He tried to show me but he was so darn fast I could hardly keep up. I told him among all the programs only Super Anti-Spyware found 470 tacking cookies! He said that it was OK and they were harmless and I could access them from another Windows cleanup selection. Are all these programs that are 3rd party out there junk? When I used them I found so many problems, weaknesses and vulnerabilities. But to have them be deemed mostly useless, he did say MOSTLY useless, I am really confused. Been messing with computers for over 20 years and always used 3rd party Virus, spy ware and optimization tools regularly. Are they just programs that cue into certain functions of Windows and isolate them to make a program that is already in Windows but makes it sort of a short cut or are they really valuable? I am reinstalling a couple of things the tech deleted whether he liked it or not. As for the rest, I just don't know.

It all started when I was defragging last night. I got a couple BSOD's while doing the defrag but idiotically I just ignored them, restarted my pc and continued to defrag. After the third BSOD restart is where I died inside. When starting my pc, after the Windows XP loading screen it goes to a black screen and stays there. I try to go into safe mode but it freezes when loading drivers. I tried to do a repair with the Windows XP Setup CD but after it loads the drivers it goes to a BSOD with the following STOP message 0x0000007B. I've searched online for help and have used many utility cd's and diagnostic tools with no success (P.S. one of the utilities is a live cd and it BSOD's when starting up). There's nothing wrong with the RAM or Hard Drive, the partition table and boot sector are fine, the MBR and MFT are fine. I plugged my HDD into another computer as a secondary drive and I can explore the contents of my HDD (while using the primary drive in that computer). I suspect there may be a problem with a controller because I put a backup hard drive in my computer and tried installing Windows XP but I get the BSOD again; it's really weird because I used a SATA connection for my original drive and an IDE connection on my backup drive (is this a northbridge/southbridge issue?!). Is there any way to fix this (preferably without formatting or buying any new parts)?! And if there really is something wrong with a part and/or controller, why did none of the diagnostic tools recognize ... Read more

Hello, I was giving my computer a general tidy up and it somehow caught WIN32\Gaelicum.A. This prevented me from doing anything but accessing safe mode. So i followed a couple of guides and through safe mode managed to remove the virus.
Overjoyed, I rebooted to normal mode and proceeded to log in. However after entering my password and attempting to log in i was logged straight out without so much as seeing my desktop. I also tried pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del twice and trying to log in via administrator. However the same thing happened.
So I thought right something has been added to my startup folder to log me out as i log in so i went to safe mode to try and remove it in that. But the same thing happened in that.
In a last ditch attempt to remove the suspected script from my startup i loaded up my Ubuntu live CD and accessed the folder through that. Only to find it empty of everything but the desktop.ini file.
I should say i have XP Home and no XP install CD or recovery CD because my OS came installed on the laptop from the manufacturer. And the recovery partition is also corrupted somehow so i cant restore. Any ideas on how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated as although I have all my important files backed up and i could use Ubuntu for most of my needs, I need access to XP as I am working on a project for school which needs to be completed by the start of term in august and there is no equivalent software available on Ubuntu.

TIA,
Michael

A:Can't Log In to XP anymore

Hi and welcome

Sorry for delay. we're quite busy here.

Bad news I'm afraid....

Win32/Gaelicum.A is a nasty file infector. It is also network aware and can spread to other machines on the network.
Even though your antivirus program detects it and can quarentine/heal some of the files it will be near impossible to clean up entirely.

I suggest to take this machine off the network entirely untill you can either clean it or you re-install everything. Your other machines should be thourally checked by a couple good virus scanners too.

With a file infector such as this the only way I would trust the system is to do a full format/reinstall of your operating system and all your programs.
Even if antivirus can heal many; often the file is corrupted beyond repair and wont work after virus code is removed. You cannot even trust your antivirus program as parts of it will be infected as well.

I do not suggest backing up any of your programs because this virus looks for and infects all executables on all drives. Your backups will need to come from known good cds or dvds or re-downloaded from the internet.

Your documents, mp3s & pictures should be fine to back up.

Hello everybody,

This is my first post here, I got into a situation with my computer that I don't know anymore how to go on... hope I can get some help here.

It started when I was searching for a little freeware to change my desktop wallpaper automatically. After being redirected few times I found and downloaded "Desktop Wallpaper Timer 1.6.9.exe" (don't remember the web address, I was not attentive). I've scanned it with NOD32 and no threads were found.

After I tried to run it, a disaster began.

First I've noticed the message in the taskbar: "Your security center service is turned off" when I tried to turn it on again it was not possible. Says simply the security center service can't be started. I opened regcleaner by jouni vuorio to remove the new thing, under "software" was written that the FirstRRRun has been installed.

I removed it and than:
- NOD32 simply dissapeared - message: The program doesn't exist
- The same story with Spybot Search&Destroy
- Same with Registry Mechanic
- Not able anymore to connect the internet: "wireless wizard can not be started" (I'm writing this from another computer)

I tried to reinstall NOD32 - Not possible: Message "106 Error Occured while extracting archive file"

Can not reinstall spybot either

With another computer I've searched for AV programs like AVG free, Kaspersky trial, F-prot trial... None of them can be installed. All give messag... Read more

A:Don't know anymore...

Seems the problem has been resolved. I've used no-need-to-install AV Dr.Web. It found and removed 2 worms Win32.HLLM.Beagle. After that I was able to reinstall all programs and fix all other problems.

Hello Everybody!

First of all, sorry about my English!

So.. I have a super huge problem. My computer was working fine for like 2 years until Sunday. That's when I checked my computer and saw a message: Windows was unable to save file: D:/... etc.. (I'm sorry I didn't write it down.). It froze down. I couldn't do anything. I had to Reset the computer, but since that time the computer is unable to see my D: hard drive, which is a Seagate.

You should know my configuration:
I have a Compaq Presario SR1911X with 2 hard drives. One is for the Windows XP: Samsung SP2004C, the other one is for all my data (photos, music, emails, everything!): Seagate ST3200826AS. This is the one which is not working.

I took my computer apart and tried to change the cabels, just to see if it's a cabel problem. It's not. And I can hear that the HDD has power because it gives me the sound.. But the only problem, that the computer doesn't recognize it anymore.

Please Please Please people, help me!!!! I don't want to loose all my data, expecially my photos. Also, I don't have the money to get it to a data recovery comptany.

Thank you!

A:Can't see my HDD anymore!! Please Help me!!

It sounds like the hard drive died. Good thing you backed everything up, huh? Data you don't have at least 2 copies of is data you don't want to keep.

Is the drive even spinning? Did it make any noise before quitting? If there is no access at all, a data recovery company may be the only answer. But they can cost 1000's of dollars, too.

You could try some hard drive tests if they will run on it.

Free Hard Drive Testing Applications:

Manufacturer's Tests
Victoria for DOS
Victoria for Windows (Both versions of Victoria are among the best and most thorough tests available.)
HD Tune
CheckDisk 1.03 (Marks bad sectors as unusable.)
HDAT2 (Diagnostics and bad sector recovery)
MHDD Low-level Diagnostics
Bootable Hitachi Drive Fitness Test Floppy or CD Image (works on most drives)

one peacefull day the computer rebooted by its own, and then i can't get access to any FTP (wich i've been using before the restart).
Some days ago It also happened, i tried everything (virus scan, spyware, reconfiguration...) and the only solution was a reformat, but this time i cannot consider it.

I'm using Windows XP SP2, with all updates.

As the title says,

Where can I find XP these days?

I'm wanting to put it on the HTPC I'm building, simply because it's cheaper than Win7. Would prefer XP Pro for the IR support, but not neccesary. I'm working with a hauppauge HVR-1600-MC, it supports XP SP2 up through 7x64, so it's just a matter of price....

I know i could find Vista dirt cheap, but i wouldn't want it for the same reason as the next guy.

At the same time, I don't know if the board (GA-MA78LMT-S2) is supported by XP?

A:Where to buy XP anymore?

It is very expensive as it stands.

Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2: Amazon.co.uk: Software

Just type into google 'Buy XP pro' thousands of options.

A:Please help, i can't take this anymore

Hi, welcome to TSF.

I'm currently at work so my assitance will be brief:

I want you to search for these files on your computer and make note of if they exist. If they do, we'll need to delete them in Safe Mode:

Enable the Viewing of Hidden Files, and then search:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd.com
C:\WINDOWS\System32\netstat.com
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ping.com
C:\WINDOWS\System32\regedit.com
C:\WINDOWS\System32\taskkill.com
C:\WINDOWS\System32\tasklist.com
C:\WINDOWS\System32\tracert.com

Reboot your computer to Safe Mode and then delete any of those found above, includining this folder:

C:\Program Files\winupdates\

while in Safe Mode run HJT and fix:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdates] C:\Program Files\winupdates\winupdates.exe /auto

Reboot and report back with a fresh HJT scan.

So I had some problems with AVG antivirus, when booting my pc got stuck on booting the avg processes, so I removed them, then it got stuck on some other processes (like fvevol.sys or so) so I removed them too. After removing all processes that got stuck when booting, I couldn't boot at all! Every time I booted it automatically came in the boot manager, saying it couldn't restore my pc. :(

How can I fix this? Please note that there's nothing wrong with my HDD, it's about one week old, all new. I also did not actually remove the processes, I transfered them to an USB stick.

And BTW, I still have acces to my HDD and bios
Thanks in advance :D

Right click on the software that you are trying to install then select "Run as Administrator" this is a security measure in Windows Vista/7 to help prevent harm, and virus to your system.

If yoy need to know more plz tell me.

A:BSOD every day , cant take it anymore

These crashes were caused by memory corruption/exception (probably a driver).
Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.

* If you are overclocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
In other words STOP!!!

* If you have raid update its Driver.

Memtest.

Quote:
*Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

*Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Any errors are indicative of a memory problem.

If a known good stick fails in a motherboard slot it is probably the slot.

RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Driver verifier

Quote:
Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

So, I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you... Read more

I have 3 computers networked through an SMC Barricade router which is in turn hooked to a cable modem. (The router assigns each one a unique IP add. using DHCP) All three can access the Internet with no problem. the last time I tried to view the shared folders, all of a sudden none of the computers can see any of the others, Two are running Win XP home SP2. One of them must use Win 98 because it wouldn't take XP. I have installed Trend Micro Internet security an them, but have it configured for home local area network. On two of them I'm running Trojan Hunter. They all have spyware blaster running in the background. I don't know when the blindness problem occurred because I haven't tried to go to My network places since August. Everything was OK then. I have made sure all three are in the same workgroup.

A:can't see other computers anymore

The basics for troubleshooting are:

1. Make sure you have the same IP scheme (e.g. 192.168.0.x).

2. Make sure you have the same Subnet Mask, Gateway, and DNS IP addresses.

3. Make sure you can ping the other computer's IP address. If this fails, just for testing, make sure you turn off XP's as well as any other firewall.

4. Make sure you can ping the other computers by name.

5. Make sure you have the same workgroup name (watch for trailing spaces)

6. For troubleshooting purposes, turn off XP's and completely uninstall any other firewall software. You can always add more complexity after you get it working.

7. With XP, make sure you have the same username and password as the person logging onto the other computers. The default setting for XP Pro is to require a password for network access.

8. More details about how to network XP can be found at:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/xp_network.htm

9. More details about how to troubleshoot TCP/IP networks can be found at:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/trouble.htm

There continues to be a lot of misinformation about needing NetBEUI or to changing the NetBIOS setting. You can ignore both. Installing NetBEUI to solve a networking problem will just mask a some underlying and potentially important misconfiguration with TCP/IP. The default NetBIOS setting works fine so there is no need to change that either.

Well, I now have an unbootable computer. I don't know what's wrong. When it tries to boot, it gets a BSOD, and it goes by too fast for me to possibly read it. I heard you can change this option by getting into a special menu with F8, but F8 doesn't do anything for me. I heave the option of loading Startup Repair, too, but its SLOOOOOOOOOOOOW! There's no way this can be right! (Maybe I need to put the harddrive on an eternal reader and grab the dumps.)

Prior to this, the OS was laggy. I was playing music with Winamp, and it k.....ept pausing. Prior to that, I had a mess where all the programs became unresponsive and I had to force a reboot. Now, this may be unrelated, but prior to all of this, I had not one but two harddrives start to fail. One of them did fail. Now, I'm being good as far as I know. I have a surge protector on this stuff. Is there a surge coming from within? Is it time for a new motherboard, and is that the only thing that will save me? Am I smarter than I look, or not?

I'm on a budget. I really don't want to have to replace everything if I can avoid it.

I'm running WIndows 7 on a Gigabyte H55M.

A:Can't boot up anymore.

I would run hardware diagnostics first to check for a failing  hard drive. Most computers have built in tests that can be accessed by pressing a key when the manufacture splash screen appears.
