I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop on Windows XP Media Centre Edition 2004. Lately burning DVD's/CD's is increasingly failing, to the point now its near 100% of the time. With Burn at once/ashampoo it usually says its burnt but theres nothing on the CD. With Nero I get a more full message which follows. Any tests, troubleshooting, tips, things to run etc. please do help me out, I'm noting this in hardware as its not software specific actually really the laptop has an issue with burning, and also, the below Nero report says theres a power calibration error:

Power calibration errors are generally a sign of poor or incompatable media, however it could also be that you are trying to write to the media too fast.

I note it's CD-RW media according to the log, at 8x speed. That is the absolute maximum (8x) for the drive using CD-RW, not a good test.

Try lower speeds, it appears that you have also deselected the maximum speed sensing, that could prevent writing too fast.

Please help me get my computer working correctly.Whenever I try to burn a cd on my cd drive using nero. I get an error message right before the drive begins burning the cd saying that the drive is being used by another application. Below is the nero error log. In addition when I turn my computer off and restart it my motorola surfboard modem loses its drivers and needs to be reinstalled inorder to access the internet. I have it connected through a usb cable and my isp is optimum online. About 2 weeks ago i got an Ipod nano and ever since I installed it along with Itunes I've had all sorts of issues.

Have you tried disabling XP's built-in burning capabilty? I found this on a search:
The problem is then isolated to Windows XP's IMAPI service, which is used for managing CD imaging (ie. burning). Setting it to Manual was not enough, which I had set before. Setting it to Disable got rid of this problem. After that, it was smooth sailing with Nero 6.

I'm guessing it's more of a software problem than a hardware one, so I put this in SOFTWARE PROBLEMS instead. And I'm also pretty sure I did it too. I have a Dell 3000 , WinXP SP2, and the burner is an NES ND-3530A CD/DVD+RW . Yesterday I burned some CD's with MS MediaPlayer 11. It worked just fine. Afterward I was going through the Control Panel and thought I would get rid of any programs I never or hardly used, to free up some HDD space. The only thing I could find that I never use was the Music Match Player. I've never used it once the whole 3 years I've had this computer, so I baleeted it. I've always used either MS MediaPlayer or VLC Player for watching and listening to stuff. So *poof*, dummy me removed it from my Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs list. Now fast forward to today. I went to make some more music CD's and my Media Player had a brain fart. I put the disk in the drawer and waited for MP11 to read how many minutes were remaining on the disk so I could burn songs onto it. It gave me a "Connect a burner and restart the player" announcement at the top instead of the usual Time Remaining on Disk display. Also when I click My Computer, instead of showing it as the usual single CD/DVD-RW (D:) drive letter designation on it, it's now showing TWO separate drives named CD Drive (D:) and a second CD Drive (E:). (I only have the one burner on it tho)The Music Match player was the only thing I did to it, but why would r... Read more

A:I broke my CD/DVD/RW- It won't burn anymore

Just a quick follow up to my problem. I tried a lot of different remedies suggested by people in different forums to no avail. Nothing would make my comp read the drive as a burner. I even went to Roxio's Help Pages and tried some of their cures for the problem, but my comp still wouldn't read my CD/DVD/RW as a burner. Hell, I couldn't even use Defragment anymore it was so messed up from old virus attacks.By chance yesterday I was Googling for something totally unrelated and came across an easy cure. I knew my Windows files had to have been either corrupted or deleted by past virus attacks which was my main problem. I was reading some info about a particular virus when I saw the article mention you could use the built-in System File Checker to repair corrupted or missing protected System files. You just open the Command prompt and type in sfc /scannow and windows will scan through the Windows folder and fix or repair the bad files. I now have my burner back once more. I was kinda disheartened that this got no replies, but I thought I'd still post a follow up.

I've burned DVD's on my laptop in the past, but now it won't burn onto DVD's anymore. I go through the steps, as usual with Nero, but nothing shows up on the disc afterwards. It does burn photos to CD-R's, but won't on DVD-R's. When I put a blanc DVD-R in the drive, it doesn't see it. It will play DVD's but the audio is jumpy and cuts out, for a split second, every few seconds. The audio seems to act like it's stopping for a milisecond, but it is not noticeable with the visual.

Does this sound like it's missing drivers or has a software problem or a hardware problem?

Can anyone help with this?

I can't burn DVD's anymore with my TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L633A. It used to work fine, and it still reads DVD's, but after I burn DVD's with Alcochol 120% (and everything seems to go well, it even says everything got burned) I put the CD again into the drive and it shows that the DVD is empty!!! Nothing has burned on it, though it showed progress bar during burning and i got the message that everything was completed succesfully.

So the DVD drive does everything; reads Cd's/dvd's, seems to write on them, but doesn't actually.

What could be wrong? Plz help, i desperately need to burn DVD's for work, but cannot seem to find a solution. One thing which culd be wrong is that a few weeks ago the slot for my headphones just stopped working suddenly. I still get sound on my laptop but not via my earphones. Could there have been some problem with the motherboard that also affected the DVD burner or is that improbable? Thanks for the advice!

I have a windows 8 laptop. It's a few years old. It has always worked great until recently. I cannot burn DVDs or CDs anymore. It plays them fine. It's a TSSTcorp CDDVDW SU-B08AB drive. When I look at the driver it says Windows did not start a related device driver. To learn more, click the Driver tab and then click Driver Details. It says the driver has the current software. If I'm trying to burn a cd sometimes it will burn around half of the songs and then say there's an error. Sometimes it plays those songs and sometimes it doesn't. It did let me make a Blueray DVD once recently that played fine but nothing since then. I've tried multiple programs for burning a DVD or CD and no luck so far. Are there any programs that would clash with the drive? Any suggestions?

A:Can't burn DVDs or CDs anymore

When I look at the driver it says Windows did not start a related device driver.

If you right click the device in Device Manager->General tab. What is the device status? Is it working or is there an error code number?

I tried to burn a disc last night through windows media player and it keeps saying to connect a burn device.
I only burned a disc last week and it was working fine then so cannot understand why its saying that

Ive even tried to do it through iTunes thinking it was something to do with the media player but that wont work either! That looks like it's going to do it and says its writing the 1st song, then it cancels it and ejects the disc!

Any idea whats going on??

A:Solved: Cannot burn anymore!!

See if anything here helps:

Also, you should consider using dedicated burning software rather than using a media player to do that job.
Dedicated burning software often works when the media player method doesn't.

Contrary to what some people might think, you don't have to use a media player to burn music to CD/DVD.
In fact, doing it with a media player is a bad idea - but many people use that method because WMP and iTunes are already installed so it saves them having to install anything else.

You don't necessarily have to buy burning software (though they are usually better than the free ones). Some free ones here:

CDBurnerXP: (despite it's name, it's not just for Windows XP).

It won't burn anymore. The past 3 dvd's i tried burning. I know I'm doing it right, I've done this a million times, there is something wrong with the drive or something (not wrong with me). I'm burning an ISO. I've tried using Nero 7 Ultra ISO burner and DVD Decrypter to burn. Nero errors out and Decrypter just sits there at 0% with 100% buffer.
The ISO is no longer protected, so it burned correctly. If I burn it on another computer, it works fine.

Some things you can try:If you recently installed some burning software, uninstall it.Use the fix given on this Microsoft page.Use a different brand of CD/DVD.Clean the laser using one of those drive cleaning kits (or if it is a laptop, carefully wipe the laser with a soft dry cloth).Open the Device Manager (Start > Run > type "devmgmt.msc"). Locate the CD/DVD drive, right click on it and select "Uninstall". After it has uninstalled reboot the computer (it will be automatically reinstalled).

I'm not that new to the game but I have come across one that has stumped me for quite a few days now.
I cannot copy music (mp3 to audio cd) or data files with my burner.
I know the burner works because it still allows me to back up my movies.
For the movie back-ups I use DVD Shrink with AnyDVD running in the back ground.
DVD Shink uses Nero as the burning software but whenever I try to use just Nero (or Windows XP or WMP) to burn music all I get is a bunch of error ridden coasters.

WMP goes through the whole motions. Tells me my files are "ready to burn". Then when I click on "burn" it inspects/converts everything then it burns the first song but as soon as it jumps to the next one it tells me "closing" and it closes the rest of the songs. I have tried the songs in differnt oreder and even put a whole new list of songs on but still the same thing happens.

Nero goes to about 4% on the burn and then I get "Burn process failed at XXXX"

I have tried WinAmp...same end result...nothing.

I have used converters to convert mp3 to wma prior to burn but still the same result...coaster.

My Burner is set as the recordable device under its properties.

I have tried several different types of CD-R. I have always used Memorex and have not had a problem...until now.

I have been all through the options of WMP and as far as I can tell it all looks good.

I have re-installed Nero, WMP and WinAmp...a couple of times each... Read more

Hey everyone,

This post is in regards to a SATA drive I have. Its worked fine, I have 2 other similar SATA Hard drives, no problems with my ASUS K8VE Deluxe Mobo. Anyways, I was trying to burn a video file to a DVD-R using the DivxToDVD program and a few minutes of it the blue screen of death came up and I don't even remember what it said but it was the typical exception error yada yada. So I rebooted, and the drive the video file was being burned from, Drive "G" wasn't detected, the shortcut on my desktop showed a question mark over the icon. I clicked it and now it says: "The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'Drive (G).Ink' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again." I rebooted twice since then, and its the same issue. I even tried downloading the program "Recover my files" but it detects everything except Drive G. I don't know if there's a way to get back into it either in safe mode or just using a program or something, I'm desperate here because I had a bunch of files held on the drive. Thanks for your time.

CD & DVD drives don't have 'recording' tabs!
OK, here's what is going on. Several weeks ago (don't remember exactly when, mid or late January) I was fooling around & installed some programs so I could convert songs from my phone to a format my computer could read. Didn't work, I uninstalled it.

Then a bit later I downloaded a program to ID music by playing it over speaker into the microphone to id a song. Uninstalled it, too. I know one of these programs (again, don't remember) told me to change my default 'record media from the drive to I think a virtual drive.

Anyway, I think this is what has caused my problem, which is I can no longer get CD-R's to burn. I have a Dell DImension 5100 with Windows XP and when I try to use Media Player to burn songs to a CD, it looks as if it is going thru the process, but doesn't do it. XP and media player recognize the drives and I can play CD's or DVD's, just can't get the computer to remember that yes, these drives are capable of recording.

Also, when I put a blank CD-R into either drive they show under properties to be 'full' and have no space left on them, even though they are new. When I go to 'properties' on both drives, there is no 'recording' tab so I cannot 'enable' recording.

I have Googled around and here is what I have tried to do to fix it.

Hi guys. This may be a confusing post to read (I know it is to write after having all these problems for months), but I'm wondering if anyone here would have any input or suggestions.

1) It all started off when audio would have skips in it while recording from the line in on the soundcard, or when doing a live radio broadcast over the internet. I had a Sound Blaster Augidy 2 Platinum, which I thought would be a good card. I called Creative a few times, but their suggestions were already done. I already had the latest drivers, I had DMA turned on on my hard drives, etc etc.

I decided to take the Creative card out and try the onboard sound. No change. The skipping still happens.

Now this isn't some old slow computer. It's a few month old AMD64 3000+ with a gig of ram. The motherboard is a Giga-Byte K8NS Pro.

2) All of a sudden, one day I tried to burn a DVD and couldn't. It kept saying "Illegal Disc" before it even started. I figured it was a single bad disc, because the other ones in the same pack worked the week before. So I went to two different Wal-Marts trying to return that single disc in exchange for a new one. Neither location had any RW's, so I couldn't exchange it. I bought a pack of DVD+R just to try those, because I needed to get that DVD burned.

I came back and tried. It kept saying "Illegal Disc", just like before. I had now used up 2 of the DVD's in the 5 pack. I tried a 3rd, and it started to burn ... Read more

I have 120 gb external drive. I don't mind using the external drive to burn the system image on as i barely ever use it and yes it still works. However, I worry about system image being re written by virus should i ever get a virus, spyware, malware, ect. on my external drive and then the viruses re enters my system everytime i use the system image. The whole point of even me using the system image would be in the event i get a virus and i just can't rid of it or I just really wanna be sure its gone. So i use the system image to delete everything and restore only what was on the system image. So my question is do you think if be the safer bet to just store the system image on none-rewritable cds? Perhaps this is not very convenient as i would need more than probably 3 cds, but would it be safer and would it let me install it on more than 1 cd? I think the system image is about 80 gbs. So i may need up to 9 cds to store 10 gbs each going from part 1 to part 11. Is it going to let me do that? Oh and i just might make a back up on my external drive as just as emergency back up in the given case one or all my cds don't fully work or should one out of 11 ever fail.

A:System image burn to external drive or burn to cds? Question in messag

Hello Trent,

It would be best to create the system image on a HDD instead. A CD/DVD is less reliable to restore from, and more expensive for how many you would need.

You can do what's in the NOTE box at the top of the tutorial below to keep multiple copies of system images on the same HDD. This way you can create a system image backup that you know is clean, rename the backup folder to keep it so new system images will not replace it. Just repeat this every so often to have a updated system image that you know is clean.

Hope this helps,

Hi everyone,A few days ago, I suddenly couldn't update AVG anymore. It always gives me an error, telling me the connection with the server failed. I also noticed that I can't connect Limewire (P2P program) anymore and opening movie streams in Windows Media Player doesn't work anymore either.I searched some forums for a solution and I found someone with a similar problem, who also told he couldn't execute the "cmd" and "regedit" commands anymore. I tried it on my own computer and I can't run those things anymore either. When I try executing them, the explorer goes all weird and shuffles the program bars on the task bar.I've manually downloaded the latest updates for AVG, installed them and did a full scan, that didn't find a thing. I also ran AdAware, which said I had some malware, which I removed with it. Then I also ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, which found some more malware, so I removed it, rebooted my pc, but the problems still exist...I'm hoping someone can help me with this problem, because it's really anoying...Here's my HijackThis log:Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 20:37:26, on 11/05/2009Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16827)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\At... I'm not sure if this is the right section but here's the problem:

Yesterday I tried to burn a folder containing pictures (about 650 MB worth) and a few WordPad files onto a brand new blank CD-RW disc (with 700 MB of space). using the Mastered format. When I tried burning the files to disc, I got a message saying "There was an error burning this disc. It might no longer be usable". I tried using another blank disc and got the same error. I also tried using an older CD-R disc that still had plenty of room on it and I still got the same error.

I also tried burning just the pictures and not the files and got the same error.

I then tried to burn just the files and not the pictures. This time it worked. I was able to burn the WordPad files to the disc but not the pictures.

Any ideas why this is happening? I was able to burn pictures onto a blank disc just 2 weeks ago without any problems, but now it won't work.

I'm using a Toshiba Satellite laptop with Windows Vista Basic

A:can i burn a cd/dvd while i'm defrgmenting a partition from where a want to burn data

I can't say that I've tried that myself. I guess it could be possible that the data could be corrupted if the files that you're burning are being moved at the time, but that chance is pretty low I suppose. Give it a try if you want to, but don't be surprised if everything runs extremely slow, or if the CD ends up having corrupted data. I'd advise either pausing the defrag or just waiting until it finishes.

Nero burn is not burning my CD-R, I get an error message just seconds after I start the burn process that reads:

-Buffer Underrun
-Could not perform end track
-invalid write state
-could not perform end track
-simulation failed 12x(1800 MB/S)

I was able to burn AVI's (movies) to CD, but once I tried to watch these movies I got an error message on my screen "cyclic redundancy error", which I came to understand means that the data on my CD was damaged.

I am using a CD-R, 1x-48x speed, 700MB, 80 Min, no name brand. Pretty much your basic CD-R. I am burning with Nero Burn c1995-2001.

I had no trouble burning cd about 1 week ago.

IMPORTANT - The only thing new that I installed on my computer was AC3-ACM decompressor. I installed this to allow my Premiere 6.0 program to identify AC3 compressed audio files, which in turn allow Premiere to import these files without giving me errors like "unsupported compression".

Please help. I can't burn AVI's(movies) or MP3's(music)

under runs used to be a big problem with slow pcs.
when you burn CD's do you continue to use the PC and do you have lots of programs running

After installing XP SP3 in my desktop and in my laptop, I attempted a DVD+RW burn moving files using Windows Explorer and immediately ruined the disk. The disk shows full with only one file of zero bytes labeled Non-Allocatable Space. This file cannot be deleted. I have ruined several disks in ineffective troubleshooting. Both computers exhibit similar characteristics and I cannot erase nor format this disk in either computer. This problem is not evident in writing to a CD-R, it is limited to DVD burning.
Microsoft finally took control of my desktop and worked diligently with the computer for over an hour. Their troubleshooting process included the deletion of Nero and Roxio programs to no avail. The assigned tech finally had to turn it over to Research for further troubleshooting which has not yet happened.
To briefly summarize, I can burn a CD but cannot burn a DVD in either computer. Inputs anyone?

Hello, I burned a successful ISO with windows and it verified but I often read that Image burn is the way to go with ISO burns, should I burn one with that software as well and is there any difference?

Thank you

A:Disc image with windows or should i burn with with image burn.

ImgBurn is a high quality program, but the larger point is whether or not the ISO burned with Windows will do what you want it to do. If yes, I'd probably just go with it, although there's no reason not to have a duplicate copy if it's really important stuff.

I wouldn't rely on "verification". If you want to know if it works, try using it for its intended purpose, whatever that is.

Hi there,

I have an old Dell XPS M1530 and wanted to salvage the hard drive, buy an enclosure and use it as an external hard drive. This is what i typed in:

select disk 0
create partition primary
select partition 1
format fs=ntfs quick

Do i need to do anymore? or can i just put it in an enclosure and use it as a hard drive? and will i have the 320 GB on the drive to use?

A:Do i need to do anymore?

I think you are OK.

But I'd go back into diskpart and look at the results.

Probably with these commands

List disk (should show disk 0)
Select disk 0
List part (should show partition 1)
Select part 1

Do you see a part 1 with the expected size?

If so, you are good to go, but you can always recheck in Windows Disk Management after you get it connected.

I'm not sure, but I don't think you have to assign a drive letter in diskpart.

I don't know where to post this now. I have no clue anymore what is wrong with this system. With the money I have wasted into this thing I could have bought a top of the line gaming rig by now. But now its too late to just pull out and leave this thing alone.

Anyways suddenly I am getting this problem(problem number 156?).

This is how it started: I updated my video card drivers to the latest ATI drivers 9.12. I started playing the game DIRT2 for a couple hours. I finally closed down DIRT2 and suddenly I was getting this problem: The PC would get a split second freeze every couple of seconds. Along with this split second freeze is coupled with this High Pitched Looping sound like when a program locks up and you get that looping sound until you can close out the program. This freeze up is basically noticable in the form of the mouse freeze up for a split second, then it moves again and then split second freeze again.

Ok, that is just the start of the problems. I am also suddenly having random issues with connecting to the internet via my wireless. Before this problem occured I was able to connect flawlessly. My wireless adapter will be displayed as "Connected" as always but I cannot open a web browser page. My windows live was still connected for 10 minutes one time while I was trying to figure why I can't connect to firefox. Then suddenly windows live crashed!

Hello everybody,

This is my first post here, I got into a situation with my computer that I don't know anymore how to go on... hope I can get some help here.

It started when I was searching for a little freeware to change my desktop wallpaper automatically. After being redirected few times I found and downloaded "Desktop Wallpaper Timer 1.6.9.exe" (don't remember the web address, I was not attentive). I've scanned it with NOD32 and no threads were found.

After I tried to run it, a disaster began.

First I've noticed the message in the taskbar: "Your security center service is turned off" when I tried to turn it on again it was not possible. Says simply the security center service can't be started. I opened regcleaner by jouni vuorio to remove the new thing, under "software" was written that the FirstRRRun has been installed.

I removed it and than:
- NOD32 simply dissapeared - message: The program doesn't exist
- The same story with Spybot Search&Destroy
- Same with Registry Mechanic
- Not able anymore to connect the internet: "wireless wizard can not be started" (I'm writing this from another computer)

I tried to reinstall NOD32 - Not possible: Message "106 Error Occured while extracting archive file"

Can not reinstall spybot either

With another computer I've searched for AV programs like AVG free, Kaspersky trial, F-prot trial... None of them can be installed. All give messag... Read more

Seems the problem has been resolved. I've used no-need-to-install AV Dr.Web. It found and removed 2 worms Win32.HLLM.Beagle. After that I was able to reinstall all programs and fix all other problems.

Hopefully someone can help me out because I am a novice when it comes to computer skills. In the last few weeks or so my internet has been acting up and keeps crashing on me witha message reading that I have had some serious error and needs to close, allowing me to report it to microsoft. I ran AVG 8.0 (Free edition)and Spydot. They seemed like they got rid of things and everyone was going okay but my internet was still acting up.

Now, in the last few days that problem has gone away but I believe have malware on my computer. I keep getting pop ups from avg saying trojans like Vundo.FJ and BHO.HYT are on my computer and should be fixed, which AVG supposably does.

Currently, I keep getting new windows of internet explorer opening, kind of like popups, that I never did anything to that are from really random sites. I am not sure how that helps but I figured I would throw it in here.

From my little knowledge of computers I used "run" with msconfig and noticed that in my startup it says that I have these three things that I know should not be there. They are:
1. ruyopaku
2. tukuhegu
3. hagijifa or metadomo (It keeps changing between the two for some reason)
They are all rundll32.exe, whatever that means.

This is what I did to get rid of it, besides running my two spy programs, so hopefully I didn't screw anything up.

A:Please help, i can't take this anymore

Hi, welcome to TSF.

I'm currently at work so my assitance will be brief:

I want you to search for these files on your computer and make note of if they exist. If they do, we'll need to delete them in Safe Mode:

Enable the Viewing of Hidden Files, and then search:

Reboot your computer to Safe Mode and then delete any of those found above, includining this folder:

C:\Program Files\winupdates\

while in Safe Mode run HJT and fix:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdates] C:\Program Files\winupdates\winupdates.exe /auto

Reboot and report back with a fresh HJT scan.

I have tech service through the ISP I have. I noticed that Chrome was running kind of sluggish and figured, since it was there, I contacted tech support. The tech removed Malwarebyte, Super Anti-Spyware, Advanced System Care, two registry programs I had and Baidu browser and Baidu Speed up. He said almost everything could be done with programs already available in Windows 10. He tried to show me but he was so darn fast I could hardly keep up. I told him among all the programs only Super Anti-Spyware found 470 tacking cookies! He said that it was OK and they were harmless and I could access them from another Windows cleanup selection. Are all these programs that are 3rd party out there junk? When I used them I found so many problems, weaknesses and vulnerabilities. But to have them be deemed mostly useless, he did say MOSTLY useless, I am really confused. Been messing with computers for over 20 years and always used 3rd party Virus, spy ware and optimization tools regularly. Are they just programs that cue into certain functions of Windows and isolate them to make a program that is already in Windows but makes it sort of a short cut or are they really valuable? I am reinstalling a couple of things the tech deleted whether he liked it or not. As for the rest, I just don't know.
I would think that the writers and programmers of your particular OS would include such protection but I think it's kinda like guys in prison. They have all day every day looking for that one weakness in... Read more

Hello Everybody!

First of all, sorry about my English!

So.. I have a super huge problem. My computer was working fine for like 2 years until Sunday. That's when I checked my computer and saw a message: Windows was unable to save file: D:/... etc.. (I'm sorry I didn't write it down.). It froze down. I couldn't do anything. I had to Reset the computer, but since that time the computer is unable to see my D: hard drive, which is a Seagate.

You should know my configuration:
I have a Compaq Presario SR1911X with 2 hard drives. One is for the Windows XP: Samsung SP2004C, the other one is for all my data (photos, music, emails, everything!): Seagate ST3200826AS. This is the one which is not working.

I took my computer apart and tried to change the cabels, just to see if it's a cabel problem. It's not. And I can hear that the HDD has power because it gives me the sound.. But the only problem, that the computer doesn't recognize it anymore.

Please Please Please people, help me!!!! I don't want to loose all my data, expecially my photos. Also, I don't have the money to get it to a data recovery comptany.

Thank you!

A:Can't see my HDD anymore!! Please Help me!!

It sounds like the hard drive died. Good thing you backed everything up, huh? Data you don't have at least 2 copies of is data you don't want to keep.

Is the drive even spinning? Did it make any noise before quitting? If there is no access at all, a data recovery company may be the only answer. But they can cost 1000's of dollars, too.

You could try some hard drive tests if they will run on it.

Free Hard Drive Testing Applications:

Manufacturer's Tests
Victoria for DOS
Victoria for Windows (Both versions of Victoria are among the best and most thorough tests available.)
HD Tune
CheckDisk 1.03 (Marks bad sectors as unusable.)
HDAT2 (Diagnostics and bad sector recovery)
MHDD Low-level Diagnostics
Bootable Hitachi Drive Fitness Test Floppy or CD Image (works on most drives)

As the title says,

Where can I find XP these days?

I'm wanting to put it on the HTPC I'm building, simply because it's cheaper than Win7. Would prefer XP Pro for the IR support, but not neccesary. I'm working with a hauppauge HVR-1600-MC, it supports XP SP2 up through 7x64, so it's just a matter of price....

I know i could find Vista dirt cheap, but i wouldn't want it for the same reason as the next guy.

At the same time, I don't know if the board (GA-MA78LMT-S2) is supported by XP?

A:Where to buy XP anymore?

It is very expensive as it stands.

Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2: Software

Just type into google 'Buy XP pro' thousands of options.

Hello, I was giving my computer a general tidy up and it somehow caught WIN32\Gaelicum.A. This prevented me from doing anything but accessing safe mode. So i followed a couple of guides and through safe mode managed to remove the virus.
Overjoyed, I rebooted to normal mode and proceeded to log in. However after entering my password and attempting to log in i was logged straight out without so much as seeing my desktop. I also tried pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del twice and trying to log in via administrator. However the same thing happened.
So I thought right something has been added to my startup folder to log me out as i log in so i went to safe mode to try and remove it in that. But the same thing happened in that.
In a last ditch attempt to remove the suspected script from my startup i loaded up my Ubuntu live CD and accessed the folder through that. Only to find it empty of everything but the desktop.ini file.
I should say i have XP Home and no XP install CD or recovery CD because my OS came installed on the laptop from the manufacturer. And the recovery partition is also corrupted somehow so i cant restore. Any ideas on how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated as although I have all my important files backed up and i could use Ubuntu for most of my needs, I need access to XP as I am working on a project for school which needs to be completed by the start of term in august and there is no equivalent software available on Ubuntu.

A:Can't Log In to XP anymore

Hi and welcome

Sorry for delay. we're quite busy here.

Bad news I'm afraid....

Win32/Gaelicum.A is a nasty file infector. It is also network aware and can spread to other machines on the network.
Even though your antivirus program detects it and can quarentine/heal some of the files it will be near impossible to clean up entirely.

I suggest to take this machine off the network entirely untill you can either clean it or you re-install everything. Your other machines should be thourally checked by a couple good virus scanners too.

With a file infector such as this the only way I would trust the system is to do a full format/reinstall of your operating system and all your programs.
Even if antivirus can heal many; often the file is corrupted beyond repair and wont work after virus code is removed. You cannot even trust your antivirus program as parts of it will be infected as well.

I do not suggest backing up any of your programs because this virus looks for and infects all executables on all drives. Your backups will need to come from known good cds or dvds or re-downloaded from the internet.

Your documents, mp3s & pictures should be fine to back up.

Sophos description (they have different name)

If you don't have the resorces to format/re-install we can try & fix but I cannot guarenty our success or system integrety afterward.

Wish I had a better answer...

I've been trying to get rid of this problem:

When my computer goes Idle my Connection drops.
I Just closed Firefox and my connection dropped.
It drops randomly and constantly ( weird huh ) every 20 minutes or random browser closes.
It happened about 4 or 5 months ago, then went about 2 or 3 months with out the problem, now its back!

My equipment:
HP Pavilion Desktop. Vista (forget the model)
Westell 2200 Modem
Linksys WRT54G2 Router (i don't use wireless)
Also i Use a wired Xbox 360

Here is the thing though:
When my PC drops connection I am still able to get online and play with my friends on Xbox Live, So I don't think it is the Modem or Router, it has to be a cord or my computer or something.. Anyway I'm getting really tired of it because every time i want to use my PC I have to reset my router to restore the connection. Anything helps!

P.S. Everything is Wired at ALL times and it Still says its connected but i cant get online, And when i go into my Status it says 356 Million Bytes received, i don't know if that means anything.

It all started when I was defragging last night. I got a couple BSOD's while doing the defrag but idiotically I just ignored them, restarted my pc and continued to defrag. After the third BSOD restart is where I died inside. When starting my pc, after the Windows XP loading screen it goes to a black screen and stays there. I try to go into safe mode but it freezes when loading drivers. I tried to do a repair with the Windows XP Setup CD but after it loads the drivers it goes to a BSOD with the following STOP message 0x0000007B. I've searched online for help and have used many utility cd's and diagnostic tools with no success (P.S. one of the utilities is a live cd and it BSOD's when starting up). There's nothing wrong with the RAM or Hard Drive, the partition table and boot sector are fine, the MBR and MFT are fine. I plugged my HDD into another computer as a secondary drive and I can explore the contents of my HDD (while using the primary drive in that computer). I suspect there may be a problem with a controller because I put a backup hard drive in my computer and tried installing Windows XP but I get the BSOD again; it's really weird because I used a SATA connection for my original drive and an IDE connection on my backup drive (is this a northbridge/southbridge issue?!). Is there any way to fix this (preferably without formatting or buying any new parts)?! And if there really is something wrong with a part and/or controller, why did none of the diagnostic tools recognize ... Read more

well there is a technical way but I doubt you're up for because it uses linux however, a simple way is to reinstall the version of windows but without formatting the harddrive this should fix the issue. you will gain access to the computer as if it were normal you can backup your documents, music, etc. and then reformat the computer.

one peacefull day the computer rebooted by its own, and then i can't get access to any FTP (wich i've been using before the restart).
Some days ago It also happened, i tried everything (virus scan, spyware, reconfiguration...) and the only solution was a reformat, but this time i cannot consider it.

I used to be able to read DVD's with either WMP or HP DVD play. HP DVD Play stopped working (Stopped opening actually, I could click on it as much as I wanted, nothing) so I deleted it. Today, I put a DVD in and open WMP but it says that I don't have a DVD decoder... Is there any way that I can get it back by doing something on the computer or I have to get a new one off a website ?

Thanks for the help

The decoder must have come with HP DVD Play, so reinstall that if you can. If not you can get VLC media player which is free and comes with a dvd decoder.

Hi all ,just wondering if the reason i cant reinstall my W7 64bit HP from my USB is because i had deleted the 100mb partition??
Which contains boot files and other needed files(i think)

i tried three attempts but all failed
finally i did a clean install from the dvd and it worked

The fail said
Failure to find system partition???

And if so ,why didnt a clean install make another 100mb partition when i reinstalled it??

A:Cant reinstall from USB anymore??

I just recently did a clean install of Home Premium x64. I deleted the 100 mb hidden partition and my windows 7 system partition C, while leaving my second data partition D alone. Windows 7 rebuilt the 100 mb hidden partition all on its own along with the primary C partition. I initially told it to use all of the unallocated space and it prompted me that it might have to create the 100 mb hidden system partition, and it did create it. My disk structure is exactly the way it was before I started.

EDIT: I did the above install from a USB thumb drive and deleted the above mentioned partitions during the install process. I've also done USB thumb drive installs to a new empty hard drive without problems. I've done it partitioning the drive, and just leaving it whole, and the 100 mb hidden partition was created each time. I don't know what happened in your case, something must have glitched during your install.

Hello all.

I have an Asus L4L, and just today when I inserted a DVD into the drive, the usual spinning action took place but the film did not auto start.

I opened my DVD software and it showed no DVD Drive.
I looked in Windows My Computer and no DVD Drive was shown.
I looked in Device Manager and now there is no sign of a DVD Drive.
I clicked on Add/Remove hardware and it cannot find the DVD Drive.
Then I rebooted and looked in the BIOS and now the Drive is no longer there.

Is it time to replace the drive?

If changing screen resolution and color depth doesn't help with anything try the VLC media player as an alternate player. VLC-MP has its own Mpeg-2 decoder and doesn't use dierectshow so its likely to work where WMP doesn't.

My system used to be able to watch DVD movies, but suddenly I'm getting an error indicating that it can't read the copy protection. WMP actually says, "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a problem occurred with digital copyright protection."

Any ideas on what might cause this to suddenly happen. BTW: It's all DVD movies.

A:Can't watch DVD's anymore

Assorted googles -

Remove the DVD from the DVD drive and then reinsert it. This will force the copy protection software to reset.

While the DVD is out of the drive, make sure that your DVD is clean. If your DVD is scratched or dirty, the DVD drive may not be able to read it correctly, and you might receive this error.

If you have another DVD player program installed on your computer, play the DVD by using that program, and then try playing the DVD in Windows Media Player again.

There was a problem configuring your video card. Restart your computer, and then try again.

OK, here goes:
I've got 3 training DVD's that used to work on my XP Home ed SP2 LapTops DVD/CD-RW. Put one in and eventually after the normal churning it would start up. Now for some unknown [to me] reason none of the three will. To add some mystery to all of this they work fine on my wifes LapTop and also on our desktop. Here's what I get:

The opening screen that askes if I want to install, start, or bonus. I always selected start. Then another screen asking if I want to go back or Launch From CD. I choose the Launch From CD. Always have in everycase mentioned above.

A screen appears that says that it is loading, so far all is normal. But here's the rub. An error message appears saying that "Error parsing XML data: not well-formed at line 32, column 101" and the only selection is "OK" so I "OK" it. Then I get a "Director Player Error" stating that "Index out of range --------- Script Error. Continue? and the selection of yes or no. Neither is worth it weight.

I've tried other DVD's and other auto run disks all is good. Just not these three???

Why did these DVD's work on my machine earlier in the day, why will they work on other comps? So I uninstalled the DVD/CD-RW's driver, restarted and kept my fingers crossed. No go. Got me stumped. Any body out there got any clues?

Thank you again,

A:Worked here and there, still there but not here anymore ???

Give the DVD disc a good clean, it could be a combination of a smudge or fingerprint and a low level of laser output in the drive (relative to the other PC's)

I have a WD 160gb IDE HD. The computer originally came with a SATA drive, but that drive kicked the bucket, and I got a new drive. Previously, after the manufacturer's logo loading screen finished, a prompt would pop up saying that the disk wasn't found, and press f1 to continue, or press f2 for the setup utility. When I pressed f1, it loaded my disk fine.

This morning, I had to reinstall my OS. After installing many drivers, I had to restart to get the drivers to take effect. Suddenly, the disk would no longer load. The computer wont find the disk at all. I've checked all the wiring, and it all seems to be in place. After the manufacturers logo screen, a prompt comes up listing the types of drives (SATA, Primary, Secondary) and saying that they were not found. When I press f1 to continue, it tells me "No boot device available. Strike f1 to retry boot, f2 for setup utility." Under BIOS options, the drive is "unknown".

Does anyone know anything that I might try to get this device working again? Any help would be greatly appreciated, and a solution that solves my problem would make me get down on my knees and

Thanks in advance.

Building my own computer is starting to seem like a worse and worse idea. Problems are increasing almost exponentially.

First, specs:

~HD 4870X2
~Core i7 920
~3x2 gigs GSKILL DDR3 (1066 I -think-)
~MSI X58 Eclipse
~PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750W (Black, Quad, I forget the order)
~Vista Home Premium 64 bit

So here's the list of stuff wrong:

~BSOD - ntfs.sys
~Pretty mucha any game that stresses the system will crash, did not resolve with a driver reinstallation
~Playing anything with Windows Media Player messed up the monitors colors/turned everything gray. This was fixed
~Sometimes playing a game won't cause it to crash, but the screen will go black. The system's still running/on, there's just no video input
~The GPU is running hotter than it used to - 78C at 70% fan
~Firefox likes to crash a lot, but that could be unrelated

Is tehre ANY chance this is just a centralized problem? None of this was an issue in the past; everything just sort of popped up.

A:So many problems I don't even know what it is anymore

hi for the ntfs i would try sfc /scnw
for the memory try downloading memtest86+ iso file and burn to a cd use imgburn then put in your drive and reboot and run for a min of 4 hours more would be better.

A:BSOD every day , cant take it anymore

These crashes were caused by memory corruption/exception (probably a driver).
Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.

* If you are overclocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
In other words STOP!!!

* If you have raid update its Driver.

*Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

*Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Any errors are indicative of a memory problem.

If a known good stick fails in a motherboard slot it is probably the slot.

RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Driver verifier

Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

So, I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you... Read more

i have a dell dimension 8400 with dvd rw which has worked perfectly for about 6months.

is it possible i have removed somehting that was needed to playback dvds? (the drive still works for audio and games etc)

Any ideas or suggestions ??!

thanks alot

I have 2 seagate hard drives, 1 80 gig, and 1 160 gig. I first had my PC running with just the 80 gig and it worked fine as master. Then I got the 160 gig plugged it in as slave and my PC knew it was there and connected to the PC but it just wasn't in "My Computer" and usable I guess you could say. So one of my friends directly connected to my computer over the internet and did something to my PC and got it working just fine (I just don't know what he did) I just formatted my PC today and the original 80 gig works but it's back to the way it was where the 160 gig isn't in "My computer" but if I go into device manager or hardware on my pc it shows it on there...what do I do?

A:Worked Before, But Not Anymore

Windows XP does not recognize anything over 100 gigs i believe and that could be your problem. Most hard drives come with a cd that modifies windows XP to recognize this hard drive, my hard drive was a 200 gig and windows xp would not recognize it till i loaded the western digital cd. Go to the hard drive manufacturer's site and see if you can find some driver that will enable your computer to recognize your hard drive and hopefully that should work.

I have a problem with internet explorer or maybe with my computer.
Everything works fine except one thing. For more than 3 weeks I can not open one website anymore (Pirate Bay).I have thought that there is a problem with the website but 2 friends of mine have no problem get that website and I have tried to use 2 different computers and I have got no problems opening that website. With my computer I always got a message:
504 gateway time out!I have tried to reset Internet explorer, checked restricted sites in my internet explorer and nothing helped.
Can anybody tell me what is wrong?

A:Can not get that website anymore!

Have you tried temporarily disabling your firewall?

Also, try pinging the site?

504 errors are not usually 'your' fault so if problems persist, try contacting the sites support. You could also try updating your link or loading from a search engine??

Hi everyone

I need some serious help here

The story is a little long
3 weeks ago, I had my computer working, and suddenly, it stopped booting windows, not even the logo show on screen, also no error code or anything. I couldn't enter diagnostic or safe mode (just bios). I had to format and reinstall windows 8 because any restore options worked.

Then a week ago, again it stopped booting, no error code, no anything, but this time, it bothered me that just 2 weeks before happened the same, so I started checking everything, so I took my Hard Drive, and put it in another computer, and it worked with no problem, windows booted, just not in my computer.

I started to look for solutions, and one was to use the command bootrec /scanos, and i got suprised that no windows installation was found. Eventually I had to speak with Microsoft tech, and they said it was my components because they were old, and they actually are (8 years), but I wasn't convinced that was it.

Before getting Windows 8 Pro, I had installed Windows 8 release preview, and it worked for months with no problem.

I thought that of course the fulll version would be heavier for my pc, so I installed Windows 7 again (had it installed for years before w8 release preview).

And now the bad part

after a couple of hours having the W7 installed, it won't boot either.

The same symptoms from W8, windows won't boot, not even the logo shows, although, with a little difference, now it shows a "Missing ... Read more

Ok this is what's happening. I'm using a Windows XP laptop with SP3 a few days ago my computer suddenly started Leaking Memory i thought reinstalling windows would allow me to use my computer again. so i did. I started installing the software that i use including the latest version of Comodo Firewall. When the firewall was running it detected that x.exe was trying to make a directory which i then blocked from happening. I google x.exe and learned that it was a problem so in installed malwarebytes anit-malware to find it and remove it. during the mbam scan i detected and removed it. then my comodo firewall started getting a warning that svchost.exe has tried to execute shellcode as a result of buffer overflow attack. i thought another reformat would solve it and my computer better now that was gone and that i was going to be more careful this time and set up my computer defenses quickly but now svchost.exe is acting up again. Now my internet connection is not working properly while my pc is slow. I also noticed my taskbar keeps on changing. at first it's supposed to look like the WinXP taskbar but now it's Classic Windows Taskbar without even changing it and other things i notice.
Then i extract gmer to the desktop i get this warning, This page has unspecified potential security flaw so i just extracted gmer to my documents and run it from there. i'm not sure if that makes any difference.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Well, I now have an unbootable computer. I don't know what's wrong. When it tries to boot, it gets a BSOD, and it goes by too fast for me to possibly read it. I heard you can change this option by getting into a special menu with F8, but F8 doesn't do anything for me. I heave the option of loading Startup Repair, too, but its SLOOOOOOOOOOOOW! There's no way this can be right! (Maybe I need to put the harddrive on an eternal reader and grab the dumps.)
Prior to this, the OS was laggy. I was playing music with Winamp, and it k.....ept pausing. Prior to that, I had a mess where all the programs became unresponsive and I had to force a reboot. Now, this may be unrelated, but prior to all of this, I had not one but two harddrives start to fail. One of them did fail. Now, I'm being good as far as I know. I have a surge protector on this stuff. Is there a surge coming from within? Is it time for a new motherboard, and is that the only thing that will save me? Am I smarter than I look, or not?
I'm on a budget. I really don't want to have to replace everything if I can avoid it.
I'm running WIndows 7 on a Gigabyte H55M.

A:Can't boot up anymore.

I would run hardware diagnostics first to check for a failing  hard drive. Most computers have built in tests that can be accessed by pressing a key when the manufacture splash screen appears.

Hi there,

A question that has probably been asked about a USB joystick more times than you have shook a stick, why would one not be recognised by xp professional, a logitech extreme, I have the software, I loaded the current version from logitech web site etc, unloaded the software, reloaded it etc, no joy.

Am I just going to have to resolve myself to the fact the thing will just not work, or is it the registry may be at fault etc.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry if this was posted somewhere already - searched and couldn't find it. Good thing to be aware of - mostly for those have have not yet installed SP2

April 4, 2005 3:08PM

On April 12th, the tool that Microsoft provided to block updates will be deactivated and PCs around the world will begin downloading the 266-MB upgrade. Only seven percent of those questioned in the AssetMetrix survey had already installed the software.

Less than two weeks before Microsoft automatically rolls out XP Service Pack Two (SP2), fewer than a quarter of businesses have bothered to install it.
Of over 136,000 PCs in 251 corporations surveyed by asset management company AssetMetrix just 24 percent had installed SP2 and 40 percent of respondents had actively avoided upgrading.

On April 12th those companies who subscribe to Microsoft's Automatic Update service will be sent the upgrade, something Microsoft postponed to allow time for compatibility testing.

"Microsoft allowed a significant period of time to accommodate companies' demand to test and validate Windows XP SP2 within their IT infrastructure," said Steve O'Halloran, managing director of AssetMetrix Research Labs.

"Based on our research, a substantial number of companies have yet to decide whether to accept or embargo Windows XP SP2. In general, we recommend that companies deploy Service Pack 2, and we recommend proper testing and verificati... Read more

Well, I thought I might actually try my hand at installing my Windows 7 x64 Pro student upgrade from Digital River finally today after I found the iso.

All has gone to hell.

First, I tried installing 7 to a second drive then activating it. Got the whole this license is for upgrades not clean installs.

So, I try some of the workarounds, which just ended up blue screening my computer and could no longer boot and a repair did nothing.

I tried installing 7 over my Vista install on the other Hard Drive, it failed during install and I had a half done 7 install on my Vista, which screwed up my MBR.

I tried reinstalling vista then installing 7 again (Note this is Vista 32bt HP to W7 64bit Pro, so no upgrades). Vista would just blue screen during install, each time I tried it would give a different error.

Now, I have two blank drives, so I try installing 7 back onto it like I had before, now the install fails every time with the error oxC0000005 in the installing features phase.

Seems that I am SOL?

This is a computer that has been running fine for the past year and never blue screened.

A:Can't install anything anymore.

If the registry edit workaround to clean install Win7 upgrade is failing, it may have been incorrectly done which could also cause the bluescreen.

Boot from your Win7 installer and wipe the HDD using Custom>Advanced tools, then if necessary install without giving key - It might take the key when booting from installer since regedits would only affect the OS and you are no longer in the OS>

When you get to the desktop, if it has refused your key up to this point, run a repair (Upgrade) install over your new install from the desktop, which will allow you to give key and activate when online.

Here is the way to burn the student download if you haven't already: Make bootable iso from student d/l

So I had some problems with AVG antivirus, when booting my pc got stuck on booting the avg processes, so I removed them, then it got stuck on some other processes (like fvevol.sys or so) so I removed them too. After removing all processes that got stuck when booting, I couldn't boot at all! Every time I booted it automatically came in the boot manager, saying it couldn't restore my pc. :(

How can I fix this? Please note that there's nothing wrong with my HDD, it's about one week old, all new. I also did not actually remove the processes, I transfered them to an USB stick.

And BTW, I still have acces to my HDD and bios
Thanks in advance :D

After 20 years of desktops I think I'll stick with buying laptops from now on. I am very satisfied with my
Core i3 15.6" 6gb 500gb $330 lap, for Internet, games, work, etc.

After checking the CPUboss site for desktop vs. laptop CPUs, I am not convinced I should spend more $ on a monitor and give up portability even if desktops beat lap CPU speed. I see that Core i5 desktop beats lap i7 by 25%, and i3 desktop beats i5 lap by 25%, and AMD a8 desktop beats a10 lap.

even a dual core desktop beats quad lap:

So I can got a virus and it continue to screw up my computer so I reformatted and now after reformatting I cant multitask anymore. I used to be able to have world of warcraft run in the background as i played call of duty and now I cant. Any suggestions?

A:Cant Multitask anymore

I used to be able to have world of warcraft run in the background as i played call of duty

Now thats a multitasking computer....

Did you reinstall the right version of Windows? 32-bit or 64-bit

Also, does it give an error or the other program just doesn't open?

Third, is it just for these two games (little bit harder for a computer to run two games...) or with any program (your internet browser and let's say Microsoft word or something...)

I had a problem a while back because of malware which meant I couldnt use any USB ports and my computer completely became redundant.

This problem meant I couldnt connect to the internet, and couldnt come to the Tech Support Forum for help, so a friend of mine had the idea to partition the C drive into C & E, E being the old problematic drive and C the new part.

This allowed me then to connect to the internet via the C drive so I coudl get to the HJT forum to get help, and as expected the forum helped me out.

Now I wont to clear that E drive away, leavingme with just the c drive, as I think Ive got everything I need from there now and placed on my now C drive.

Can somebody help me do this, and if there anything I can do with a scan to help you identify things first that isnt a problem at all.

Whilst getting help this time around, a professional in the HJT section mentioned I had a double boot system, this is new to me and just thought id mention it just in case it mattered.

A:No need for E dive anymore

Hi Lee !

Right-click my computer => manage => disk management. Expand the window and post a screenshot of it here. To post a screenshot press the print screen key, go to start => all programs => accessories => paint, click edit => paste, then save as .jpg. Attach the image file to your next post using the manage attachments button from the advanced mode.

Then open windows explorer, navigate to c:, go to tools => folder options => view. Check "show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "hide protected operating system files" and "hide extensions for known file types". Double-click the boot.ini file (or open it in notepad) and copy/paste its content here.

Before we proceed further be warned that it can be risky to merge 2 partitions (C and E) when one of them (C) holds the system. If something goes bad you can lose all the files that are on one or those partitions and you may even end up with a non-bootable computer. I would advise that you backup all your valuable data on CD's and make sure you have your install disk ready just in case.
