New Machine / XP Pro...Connect WITHOUT Verizon (???)

Q: New Machine / XP Pro...Connect WITHOUT Verizon (???)

Hello again...

Finally got my long-awaited new PC...mfg.'d by a specialty company & tweaked expressly for high efficiency digital audio.

So...I attempt to load my Verizon DSL software; & it's rejected by the new machine (for some stupid 'Flash Validation' reason or some such nonsense.) So I have heard that w/ XP Pro...internet connectivity can be made thru the OS's own portal.

Can someone explain to me how this is accomplished?

A: New Machine / XP Pro...Connect WITHOUT Verizon (???)

You don't need that "Verizon" software at all.

Is it a direct connection or wireless? Do you currently have it plugged into your computer?

What type of router do you have?

Just got off the phone with Verizon. They had me push the reset button and I was able to connect to the internet again. I mentioned how slow it takes for pages to load. She said if I have two firewalls running that can happen, then eventually it blocks your internet connection. I have the free Avira and am only using the Windows Firewall. She said the Verizon router has a firewall but it's a low security. So I went on the internet was able to get on some sites, but then others wouldn't connect again, said there is no internet connection. All the lights on the router are on. So far it's still working, but this is what happened before when I lost my connection completely.

I have Windows XP, tried it both on IE 8 and Firefox. The router is an Actiontec MI42WR. The problem was with both my desktop and laptop wired connections.

I have been unable to connect to internet with verizon dsl for about a week now and today I called verizon and they ran ping tests to 3 different places and I am sending and recieving ok and in the control panel it says that my connection is connected, so the tech had me do some other tests and said that my internet explorer is not working right, is there someway to repair IE 7 like you could with win 98 or can you reinstall over top of the existing program. any help would be appriciated

A:unable to connect with verizon dsl

You can uninstall IE7, and then reinstall it. But try the following first.

(From a JohnWill post)

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

I have a 2wire router that I purchased when I had ATT service. I now have Verizon DSL and I can't get it to work. Verizon tells me it's because I don't ahve their router but 2wire says there's no reason that it shouldn't work. When I plug it in, I get green lights on ethernet and internet but my DSL light flashes red. Last night it started flashing green and then going to solid red and the flashing green again. Can anybody help? I really don't want to buy another router if I can use the one I have. Thanks.

What's the model of the 2wire router? What brand and model of your current modem?

I have no problems connecting to my email server when I am at my home and connected to the Verizon network through my verizon supplied router but anytime I am away from home and try to connect via a Wi-Fi connection I can't connect to the outgoing mail server. I can receive emails but cannot send.

I have done some troubleshooting and verified that the setup is correct per the Verizon site.

I can ping the outgoing mail server which tells me that I can see it but I am unable to connect to it for some reason.

Does anyone know if you can connect to the verizon outgoing mail server from a non-Verizon connection? I can receive email with no issues it is only sending. I am thinking that this is harder to pervent people from spamming through the Verizon mail server?

The following error is what I receive when trying to connect:

"Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'verizon e-mail', Server: '', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number 0x800CCC0F"

It is a major pain in the butt to not be able to send emails if I am not at home. Any ideas on how to fix this would be appreciated.

Hello, I have recently moved into a new house. This house does not get any cable internet, and I would rather not use DSL as this house is a bit far from the town where the DSL line starts. Satellite internet is not an option either as it does not meet my needs. I do however, get good LTE connection here (<40ms latency) and thought that getting a hotspot from Verizon wouldn't be such a bad idea. I am aware of the somewhat high price of the data. I don't need to much data though. I usually don't watch any Netflix or HD videos at all. So I am set on getting one of those Verizon hotspot devices. Before I get the device I would like to know some things. Can I connect the hotspot device to my computer using the USB? I know the USB is used to charge the device, but could you also use it for giving the connection to a computer? My computer has no internal wifi adapter on the motherboard, and I don't want to use the wifi USB adapter I have because I am afraid that will slow the connection down. And if I can do that, how? Would I need to download a driver to be able to do that? I am able to do that as I have dish satellite internet here for now. I tried to hook up my phone via USB to my computer earlier today and use its hotspot to get a connection that would get me by for now. This didn't work. That concerns me because if I can't hook up my phone hotspot, how can I hook up the Verizon one? Will I need a USB to Ethernet port adapter? Could I hook up a ... Read more

Hi Everyone.
My boyfriend's office just moved and at the new office they now have verizon fios as their internet provider. He hooks his laptop into the wall outlet and cannot get onto the interent. It says the page cannot be found. Everyone else in the office can get the internet and his wall jack was tested saying that the internet is being received. I looked at his settings and everything looks normal. The network conncections says the lan line is connected, enabled, and firewalled. I hit repair but still no internet page displays. This a windows xp system. Before the move, my boyfriend would hook up to their verizon dsl system and get interent. At my office he can hook up to our comcast system and get the interent. Also we have a linksys wireless router at my work and I have the adapter on his laptop and that works at my work too. They said at his work they have verizon wireless with the fios but our linksys adapter does not pick up their verizon wireless signal either. We have tried to add a new lan connection and spoke to verizon techs on the phone but no one knows why it is not diplaying a page!!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!

Hello all!
My friend got a HP Mini 210 from Verizon, I believe a few years ago. It has a sim slot, but there isn't a sim card in it. I don't know if she took it out, or if she never needed one.
It is an HP Mini 210 running Windows 7 Starter.
Apparently she isn't using Verizon anymore, as she recently bought a T-Mobile hot spot instead. She can't get it to connect to the T-Mobile hot spot wifi, and I brought it home, and can't get it to connect to my home wifi either. Well actually it says "Connected" but "No Internet Access." Internet is fine and working well, so that is not the problem.
The Verizon connection is under Dial up and VPN(I think it is broadband), do I need to remove this connection to get the wifi to connect properly? It is not connected to the Verizon connection though. Is it possible that this laptop is "locked" to Verizon the way cell phones are?
The Troubleshooter says "Windows can't communicate with the device or resource. (primary DNS server)
This isn't my computer, so I am hesitant to do anything that I am not sure about. Any help would be awesome!

A:HP Mini from Verizon won't connect to wifi

They probably set a Proxy in the unit, either in Internet Explorer, or in the Registry.  Yes, delete the Verizon connection in Internet Options, in the Connections tab.  Check for a proxy in that same tab.

I have a 2wire router that I had set up so I could use my laptop anywhere without being on a line. That was with ATT service. Now I've moved and have Verizon DSL. I thought I would just plug in the 2wire router but no, it won't work. My Belkin card says it's connected. The router says all green lights, but the internet won't connect.

However, when I put their crummy little lanyard router on (one line, ethernet cable, etc.) it works fine.

I tried running the ethernet cable through the 2Wire - NO CIGAR.

So, I'm stuck sitting in this seat with a 2 foot line to get on the internet. Verizon wants me to buy their (same) router before they will help me trouble shoot. That is so wrong! HELP?

Dell Dimension 4400
Windows XP Home
Verizon DSL

I just installed Verizon DSL a month ago and this has occurred about 5 or 6 times....latest was this afternoon.
(I leave my computer running all the time). An hour ago I went to the computer, and wanted to update, (as an example) my Ad-aware....I open Ad-aware, click on "Check for Updates Now" and it freezes, clicking "X" does nothing, even using Task Manager does not close it. Now the same happens with any other Program (Spybot, SpywareGuard, SpywareBlaster, etc)...they simply cannot connect to their servers. This is basically the problem.

Also, I was not able to get IE, Firefox or the MSN Browsers to connect during this, generally speaking, I could not connect to the Internet or Program Servers.

I just got off the phone with Verizon and they say everything looks ok from their end, so they could not come up with a solution except to say that maybe I have "too many Programs running" (does that make sense?), I never had this problem with dialup (that's why I mentioned Verizon in the thread title).

Temporary Fix:
When this happens, I cannot Restart by going to Start>Turn Off Computer>Restart. I get as far as "Restart" then nothing happens. However, if I do a power down using the POWER OFF button on the tower and totally shut off the computer, everything returns to normal upon restarting and the Programs are able to connect.

I have a 4G LTE hotspot from Verizon and a Netgear genie N300 Wireless USB Adapter for my HP Pavilion and I'm running Windows Vista. My internet connection used to work fine, but today when I tried to connect it said 'this network is marked as a "hidden" network and is either not in range of this computer or the wireless settings saved on this computer do not match the settings of the network'. However, the hotspot is right next to the wireless adapter and I reset the password saved on the computer and it matches exactly. I've reset the computer and hotspot several times, no luck.

I've checked here and on a couple of other places; many people seem to have similar problems but not similar enough that I've been able to solve it.

I have a HOME workgroup on my Vista machine that is connected to the printer I want to share. I have made HOME the workgroup on my W7 laptop. The Vista machine is able to access folders on the W7 and the W7 "sees" the Vista machine... the network map on W7 shows a "dotted" line from W7 - Vista but when I try to connect from W7 to Vista it will not accept a logon. I have tried using my normal Vista machine User Name and password and even tried creating a new one just for this connection but Windows Security always says "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password".

One of the other sites suggested that Client for Microsoft Networks needed to be installed on the W7 laptop but when I checked the properties for the W7 NIC there was no Install option... does W7 need Client for Microsoft Networks?

All settings on the Vista Sharing and Discovery are on.

A:Windows 7 machine cannot connect to Vista machine

I finally figured out that it was Vista machine firewall (AT&T Internet Security Suite by MacAfee) that was blocking the W7 machine from accessing the Vista machine.

After I checked the box in Port and System Services to allow RDP access, I was able to access both the Vista computer and its attached printer from the W7 machine.

How do I get my verizon usb mobile modem to work with my wireless router? My router is a Belkin N150. Thanks in advance

A:Verizon USB Modem to Connect to Belkin Router

Moving your thread to the networking forum, and I have edited the title for better results.
Go to Start/Search and type devmgmt.msc Right click the devmgmt icon in the search results and Run As Administrator. In the Device Manager, under Network Adapters, is your Verizon Modem listed? or does it have a Yellow flag next to it? If the later, then you need to install the driver for it. If there are no flags and it is listed. Are you using the Verizon software to manage the wireless connection or the Windows software? Either way, you should have a Wireless icon in your system tray by the clock. Here you double click it to Show Available Wireless Networks. Does your Belkin Router show up? Can you try and connect to it? Do you have a wireless passphrase you need to type in?
Download the Wifi Inspector to test your wireless adapter and your routers signal.

I have the 768 Kbps broadband (PPPoE).

The modem is Westell Wirespeed C90-36R516.

I bought a Linksys Wireless-G SRX200 router. Configured the TCP/IP to DHCP for Windows XP to obtain IP address automatically. Set the DSL PPoE username and password. Set the router password. Setup complete.

I am unable to connect to Verizon, just times out. I have to reconnect the ethernet directly to my laptop to gain connectivity.

When I open ether access manager I get signal strength shown in the access manager but when I try to connect to the network it fails.  The error that I'm getting says that it's not been activated so I contacted Verizon support on this issue two time and each time I was forwarded to then next level of tech support but each time it get the same results.  No connection.  I'm hoping that someone has run into this issue already and has an answer or can make some suggestions. thanks

We had FIOS installed on Monday, and though all our regular devices connected just fine to it, my HP CP1525nw Color Wifi Laser printer will not. I have the M1424WR Rev I ActionTec router from Verizon.

Have run the HP setup utility for the printer numerous times and it only completed the first time. But after entering my credentials for the new network, it failed on me. And ever since then I cannot get it to complete the setup. It fails on me every time. In order to run the setup for wifi, I connect a USB cable from my printer to my XPS 17. But no matter, it doesn't work. Also tried connecting an Ethernet cable from the printer to one of the ports on the router but nothing happened. Also looked at my router settings, but could see no place to update anything related to the printer.

So I turn to the tech support guy site, because after scouring manuals and HP forums, I am no closer to figuring this out and right now my printer is an expensive paperweight. Yeah, I guess that I could use the USB connection but that doesn't seem to work either.

All I know is that the printer is giving me a 169.xx address, which is not on my subnet. It needs to be 192.168 something.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am a Verizon FIOS user, have been for about 2 years. I have multiple Verizon emails accounts which up until about 3 months ago I never had any problems downloading/uploading msgs via OUTLOOK EXPRESS on my PCs.

Starting November of last year however, I constantly get "stuck" trying to connect to any/some/all of my Verizon mailboxes via either OUTLOOK EXPRESS or via a program called MAILWASHER.

Both MAILWASHER and OE used to be able to connect to the Verizon mail server and initiate downloads/uploads to my accounts in seconds. Now however, almost every time I try to connect to get my mail, one or several of the mailboxes gets stuck and times out. Sometimes they all work fine. Most of the time one or another get stuck. So I have to keep stopping then reinitiating the mail connections to eventually get my mail, over and over again.

Note that I have 2 different PCs with the exact same problem. Also that I have a Yahoo business mail account also defined for both OE and MAILWASHER and that account NEVER has a problem - it is only with trying to download the Verizon emails.

Whatever the problem is it appears to be related to Verizon FIOS itself or their mail servers. I have asked Verizon for help and it was a complete waste of time. I have also posted on a FIOS related forum (back in November) but have still not been able to figure this out, although someone else there said they were having the same problem.

I have a Verizon Mifi Jetpack that I am unable to connect to using Windows 10 Enterprise. If I reimage the same machine with Windows 10 Pro it connects just fine.

When attempting to connect it hangs at "Checking network requirements..." and never returns. Never gives an error and never prompts for a password. If I manually create the network profile for the wireless connection I am able to connect.

Steps tried to resolve issue:

1. Tried switching from 2.4GHz to 5GHz on Mifi
2. Tried switching authentication protocols on Mifi (WPA2 AES, WPA2 TKIP etc..)
3. Tried deploying Windows 10 Enterprise on different machines. Same issue (Surface Book w/ Marvell NIC; Dell Laptop w/ Intel NIC)
4. Tested with updated drivers on the laptop with an Intel NIC.

Any ideas on this one? I've tried doing netmon and netsh traces and procmon traces but I can't seem to spot anything.

hi people i have this question i have 3 computers and i want to connect the copy machine to work on them together i have a little cyber please help me with this ooo im not using any program to control my computers so any idea how to connect them post me back

A:help trying to connect this copy machine??

You have to be more specific:

Is there a possibility of building a network with a router and ethernet cables or does it exist already?
What copy machine is this? USB - Connections, Ethernet-Connections?
You could attach it to the network, then it appears like a standalone device
There's another possibility to attach it to one of the 3 PCs, but in this case you'd have to leave this computer always on in order to print through one of the 2 single systems
Unlikely but possible you might have WiFi capabilities on your copy machine which makes a wireless connection possible

I was using the free version as a trial. It worked well for a while then quite working because free trial was up. I was labeled as a power user because I have multiple monitors. I have purchased the pro version but now the client computer will not connect to the computer with the license. It comes and goes. It will show up as connected for a few seconds then shows there are no other computers connected. My desktop XP is temporarily off-line. It was connected to the Internet via a DSL router, using ethernet cabling. My portable Toshiba Satellite A20, with XP, is currently connected to the Internet through a Netgear router to a satellite internet provider via a dish. this works fine, except when we have snow or ice, which happens often in Canada.

I would like to connect both the DSL router and the satellite router to the A20, so that I can share printers and other devices with my iPad (on the DSL LAN). i want to avoid any major changes to my configuration parameters, so that I can return to the status quo ante, when my desktop is returned soon.

Advice would be appreciated.

I have a Dell Dim 2300 machine w/XP Home w/Internet Explorer 8.  It will no longer connect to websites and Internet Explorer reports it cannot display the webpage. If I restart the computer it will connect once in a while but after a few minutes and then IE8 reports again that it can't display the webpage.  It is in a Home network connected directly to ISP's broadband (Windstream) wireless modem that also has hard wire 4 ports.  I am confident the modem is working properly because I have Toshiba Satellite laptop that is connected wirelessly to the same modem and have no problems with it getting out through the internet.  At times if I just leave the IE8 page up that is reporting the can't display the webpage message and go do something else, when I come back and hit the refresh button at the address line the webpage will come up and be OK for a minute or two.  But after a few more browsing addresses it again reports that it can't display the webpage.

I did the same thing on a Vista machine, was prompted for username and password, put in the same username and password and got in.
Is there some security option in Win7 I need to tweak?

I have been helping a friend set up a brand new laptop with Win-7 Home Premium (64 bit) preinstalled. I did the initial set-up at my home, with the machine connected via broadband internet cable to my router. I had absolutely no problem getting it to connect with the internet. Didn't bother to try getting the thing going wirelessly at my location. During the initial setup, I selected "home" as the network type (as opposed to public, etc.)

But, when I took the machine to the owner's home, it wouldn't connect via her broadband modem. Mousing over the network icon in the tray area brings up a tool-tip baloon, "Unidentified Network, No internet access). Opening the Sharing Center shows the network as "Unidentified Network, Public Network. None of the settings accessible to me from that point seemed useful or relevant.

I have not been able to find appropriate settings to redefine the network type, etc. Her old machine, which is in the process of dying, is still able to connect, and I'm using the same cable to connect both machines. To top it off, I very recently upgraded my own laptop to Win-7, so I took it over there and it exhibits the same problem. And, if I bring her machine back to my house it connects right up with no fuss at all.

I'm pretty sure I'm suffering from Win-7 ignorance, but for the life of me, I'm out of things to try. Help?

Anyways, I can connect form my laptop (running Ubuntu) to chaospc just fine. I pops up asked me for a password, and I put in the main desktop password and can access the whole computer. And both desktops will talk back and forth just fine, and they can bother see my laptop running Ubuntu w/o and issue.

Only issue I'm having is my laptop won't connect to chaos1. It s;topped right about the time I updated to sp3 so I'm guess; that goofed up something with the sharing.

But ne ways when I try to connect to Chaos1 from my laptop first off it takes about 20-30 seconds, but then I get an error message of "Failed to retrieve share list from server". Thats when I go to network and click on Chaos1. If I type in "smb://chaos1/" in the address bar I get the error message of "Error: failed to retrieve share list from server. Please select another viewer and try again" IDK if that means anything different. I'm not very well versed in Linux and have just started playing with in the last couple months.

In Windows 8 Pro I have created a virtual machine using Win XPSP3. I've tried everything I can to get an internet connection for my VM. I'm not on a network so I've created an external virtual switch. I've tried using both the legacy adapter and a network adapter. I've tried changing the IP address -even tried a DNS address but the best I've achieved so far is "limited or no Connectivity". I also tried Win 7 Home Premium VM with the same result - no internet connection.
The virtual manager should set this up automatically but doesn't so if anyone has any ideas, I'd like to hear them.

I have a small home network setup with a handful of Windows XP machines. I recently upgraded one machine to Windows 7 and everything was configured and working. This morning the Windows 7 machine will not connect to one of the XP machines. I set up the Windows 7 machine with two logins (my wife and I) and I have the same accounts and passwords stored on the XP machine. This was working fine. The XP machines are setup in a group and the Windows 7 machine has a homegroup by the same name (not that this matters as I think this is a Windows 7 only thing). I have the userids and passwords stored in credential manager. I entered them as group\username and then password. I can ping back and forth between the machines so I know they see each other.

No matter what I do I cannot get this 7 machine to connect to the XP machine. It could have been any number of software updates or something that could have caused this problem. Recent changes that I can think of are adding Windows Antivirus. Does anyone have any suggestions for diagnosing this issue? Thanks.

A:Suddenly cannot connect to an XP machine (others work)

I just noticed that the date on the Windows 7 PC was correct but the time was not. It was showing a time about 8 hours in the future! I checked the time settings and it was set to auto update from windows time server. I changed it to a government time server - the time updated - and lo and behold I was able to connect to the other XP machine without any problems. We had a electrical storm last night and probably some brown outs (although this machine is plugged into a UPS) - don't know if this did it. Anyway, hopefully this will help someone in the future.

My spouse's computer is still running Windows 98. For a long time, I ran the wireless network through a proxy (AnalogX) to the internet. With that setup, we had no problems (except if this 'puter went down, nobody had net access).

I've upgraded equipment, and now all our computers connect to the internet directly thru the router. Everything works beautifully, except: We cannot get citibank pages from the Windows 98 machine, from either Firefox or IE. It's running the newest version of Firefox... IE I think is still version 5. This computer and my XP laptop have no problems.

What happens is - essentially nothing. We see the connecting... along the bottom, but it eventually just times out. The page is blank.

He can get there using ninjaproxy, but cannot actually *do* anything while there (ssl doesn't work). We've tried a couple of things - there's nothing about citibank in his hosts file, we've cleared all private data in Firefox, and tried using citibank's IP addy to connect.

I just don't understand why this is. I could understand that he's using an older OS, but that doesn't seem to be the issue, as he could connect through a software proxy and can partially connect through a proxy service.

It's not a browser configuration problem, since both browsers exibit the same symptom.

I'm flummoxed. Anyone have a clue what the problem is, and if there's a fix (and what that'd be?)

Thanks for any ass... Read more

I have found that my machine has suddenly become rather slow and sluggish to respond, in particular while browsing the internet. (Doing anything else is much as it was before, and I reinstalled the whole operating system at the beginning of this year and things had been fine until just now. I regularly run CCleaner to get rid of temporary files as well, so I don't think there are any problems with these, or with fragmentation etc.)

In order to see whether my machine was running slow because of any malicious software, I attempted to run Spybot, MalwareBytes, Sysinternal's Rootkit Revealer and AdAware. The first three programs ran fine and came back clean, but AdAware failed to start, giving the error message "Failed to connect to service". According to Lavasoft, this *may* be a sign of infection.

I have now run GMER and DDS, following the instructions on this forum, but I don't know how to interpret the results to see if there is anything untoward happening. I'd appreciate it if somebody could have a look and let me know of any problems.

Hi there,

Let me explain my situation. I have a PC on a crowded network that cannot handle much more bandwidth usage.

I am now going to have a tons of transferring to do offsite so I added a second internet line just to deal with the influx of file transfers.

I tried a dual WAN setup on my router and the performance was not improved (if it was nobody noticed it) so I said forget that idea, I only need to do these massive transfers from 1 PC so I will just add a second NIC to the machine so that the 1st NIC can maintain local network functionality and the 2nd NIC will be just for internet traffic (sending files up/down to offsite location)

Essentially I just need NIC1 for handling local network, connecting to exchange etc. and NIC2 to handle files transfes to offsite location through seconday internet line.

So now I have a desktop PC with two NICs. One of them built into the board, the other a pci add on nic. they are both 10/100

On nic1, there is a connection to my network 200.200.1.X which is the internal network for Exchange, local files transfers etc. This is the network i have always had connected and I have no problem connecting to my exchange server etc. (my server is providing dns/dhcp/wins/AD/MSE for the entire network)

so I installed a secondary NIC and a secondary network line to the NIC2 on the machine.

I set it up with an IP, a SN, a gateway and a DNS

I removed the gateway from the 1st NIC.

When I did this I am now on 2 networks

Hi all,

I am trying to connect a cnc machine to a PC (win 7) with no wires.

The machine has the capability to see files on the PC when hard wired with an Ethernet cable. The machine is given the ip address and folder location (on the PC), and it looks at this folder from which files can be loaded into the machines memory.

I want to get rid of the Ethernet cable as it has to run across the workshop.

Can anyone tell me the best, easiest way to do this??
I figured using a wireless dongle or router in place of the hard wire. Not sure how to set this up?
Given the controller is not a windows pc does this change the way in which it must be set up?? As stated above, the machine can see the windows folder when hardwired.

Please help.

Is it possible to setup a Windows XP Home machine as a host so that I can remotely connect to that machine?

I read an article on Microsoft's website about this, but it say's it works only for Windows XP Professional Edition as the host. Is that true, can I not have an XP Home edition machine as a host?

Anyway, what I would like to do is remotely connect to a Windows XP Home machine (host) (this machine does not have broadband, only a dialup internet connection) from a Windows XP Professional machine (remote) (this machine does have a broadband internet connection).

If this is possible what are the steps I need to take to get this working?

Thanks in advance for any help.

A:Remotely connect to Windows XP Home Edition Machine

There is a free open source program called RealVNC that works wonderful for remote access across the Internet and ona local network. The only thing with dial-up is you would need to have someone else at the "host" to connect it and tell you what the assigned IP address is for you to connect to it. And I don't think this is what your looking for.

I thought Microsoft Messenger allowed remote access. Is this not the case with Home Edition? I had a Windows 2000 machine that I set up as a RAS(Remote Access Server) that allowed me to dial my home phone, the PC modem would answer and establish a connection and then I could browse and access files on my network.

Again, not sure if Home Edition can do this (doubt it). You might have to upgrade to Professional.

hi guys,

had a problem in the office with my broadband router, so i replaced it
the office is working fine with a sbs2003 server domain
i have an ethernet cable running down to my house which always worked
then with the router change it didnt, my friend set it up years ago and i didnt see how he set it up
but i didnt know the password, neither does he
so i reset it and set it up from scratch
my apple ipad and desktop and another laptop connect fine
but my hp 6735s vista laptop just wont connect
it tries to connect and just says the laptop is taking an unusually long time to connect then fails

the network card is a broadcom 802.11 b/g wlan adapter and the tp-link is a TL-WA601G

i have changed channels
turned off encryption
reinstalled the network card
reset the tcp-ip stack
but cant get it working

yet it connected first time to my wimax router...strange
the weird thing is when i was trying to access the router before the reset it seemed to be using ip6 addressing...
yet in the router i cant see anything to do with ip6 addressing
the server in the office is dhcp server and the addresses are 192.168.10.x
as i said other laptops etc are working in the house

i even looked for firmware updates for this device but cant see anything
any help or ideas greatly appreciated

Issue: I have a Windows 7 client that will not activate via the command slmgr.vbs /ato nor through the Volume Activation Management Tool.

Error: 0x800706BA Unable to connect to the WMI service on the remote machine
Troubleshooting:  I have added the workstation via ip address and tried to activate since I read that it could be a DNS issue. I also ran a script that was supposed to repair the WMI.  Neither tries fixed it.

I have found many similar problems to mine, but not the exact one so here goes.

HP Pavilion, Windows 7, 64 bit home premium, i7. Westell 327W wireless router (at&t version)

I have no problem at all connecting to the internet via the wireless connection in my new desktop. But often when I connect with the LAN enabled it simply refuses to connect. The problem is very repeatable with, and other sites. I can see and access the rest of my network fine wired only. And on the occasions I have been able to connect, the speed tests are fine.

I just have no idea why it occasionally refuses to connect (have not been able to connect to these sites for several hours now after multiple reboots) via wired and never has any issues over wireless. I have already disabled the router firewall and have the same issue with all non-windows services disabled.

A:Windows 7 machine fine to internet via wireless / won't connect wired

You need to decide whether the problem is with the wired ports on the router or with the computer that is plugged in. Have you got another computer you can plug in to the router?

Hi folks,

My Windows 7 desk cant connect to my websites plesk login page. There are a couple different port numbers I can use to get to the page but none work:
I tried in Firefox, Chrome and IE, all have the same problem:
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at

I have no problem getting to The site is up.

Then I tried using my netbook which runs XP and connects from my network, and I can get to without a problem. So that makes me think its not my ISP or my router, the problem lies with my desktop.

I turned off the Windows firewall, Antispyware and AVG and am trying to run as minimal programs are possible but still cannot connect to webpages with non standard ports.

Does anyone have suggestions to what might be causing the problem?

I have a HP, with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
AMD Athlon II X4 635 Processor 2.90 GHz

Problem is this.

After computer goes into sleep mode or after a restart, it takes 5 minutes or so to get back connected to my wireless network. The signal bars in the lower right hand corner will be full with the yellow '!' saying its connected to my router, but not the internet. Then after a few minutes the yellow '!' will go away for about 30 seconds, then come back on. I wait another few minutes and the yellow '!' goes away for a final time and I have no further problems with my wireless network.

The problem isn't being too far away from my router, because computers in other rooms running Windows XP connect just fine. My drivers are up to date. I turned off allowing windows to disable the wireless card during power save mode and I have searched many forums looking for help.

Any suggestions to help would be appreciated.

A:Wireless slow to connect after sleep mode on Windows 7 Machine

I am having the exact same problem. All drivers up to date. All hardware is good. I have a hunch that it has something to do with the wireless security. Something about using WPA2. I am going to try a different security and see what happends.

Here is the solution
1-make sure turn on virtual platform on bios
2- from turn windows features on or off expand hyper-v and enable hyper-v platform (Must)
3- restart your machine it should be working without problem.

This 100 % works

Dear All,

I hope you can help. Recently bought a new LaCie Wireless Space.
I am connected to it as a wi-fi router to get onto the internet.
However, my Time Machine software will not recognise it as a time capsule.
If I search for it in Airport Utility I a message that says "Airport Utility was unable to find any Airport wireless device" etc etc. Yet I am currently connected to it on wi-fi.

Also, if I open Time Machine and "select backup disk" the following appears:
MyShare on "WirelessSpace (Time Machine)"
OpenShare on "WirelessSpace (Time Machine)"

But on selecting either of them the following message appears:
Time Machine can't access the backup disk "MyShare". (or "OpenShare")
The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error 5.)

Finally, if I go into my Disk Utilities , there is no LaCie Wireless Space icon in the left column
However, there is a Wireless Sace (Time Machine) icon under the "Shared" column when I click on the computers hard drive icon on the desktop, BUT is states "Connection Failed"

I really have no idea where else to look and what else to do - other than contact LaCie - but they have not got back to me now for 3 days.

Any ideas????

I'm trying to run Client Hyper-V on my Windows 8 Pro machine. I was able to successfully install the service, and can create virtual machines and hard disks on my local system. I can even start them, and see boot activity via the preview window in the MMC.
I cannot, however, connect to any machines from the local system: when I do, it hangs on "Connecting to <machinename>" for 30 seconds before it pops up with the dialog:
"Cannot connect to virtual machine. Try to connect again. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator."
Obviously, because this is Client Hyper-V, I am the system administrator, so I scour the Internet to solve my problem. I see solutions related to firewalls, administrative permissions, a few other things, and nothing has worked. I also tried creating
a virtual machine on a Windows 8 Enterprise system (which can connect to it just fine) and export it for the Pro machine to import, and I still cannot connect to it, whether the VM is registered in place or copied to the host.
Some other notes:
- None of these systems has an OS installed - two locally created ones either had no boot or booted off a Linux LiveCD, and the exported one attempted to do a PXE boot. Thus, I cannot attempt to link via Remote Desktop since the computers have no names
- Hyper-V has some other quirks on my system as well: in order to stop a virtual machine, I have to end the vmwp process - which restarts the machine - and then stop it fr... Read more

I thought it was a corrupted windows file. As it turns out, and I have examined my boot log file which I created, this file is a new virus, hxxp://

I recently got a 1.8GHz Celeron computer from a family member who bought a new computer, but they dropped it while bringing it over. When I started it up, it booted up pretty quickly. But when I'm actually in Windows, it runs as slowly as my old 1GHz machine and sometimes when opening things it has long delays. I thought it might just be Windows being old, so I did a clean install. But that didn't fix it. Now I think it might be one of the hard drives or my cd drives, since at the BIOS diagnostic screen it sometimes hangs at them. Other than scandisk, which didn't return anything, is there a way to find out where the bottleneck is occuring without having to spend money I don't have?

Well, it depends on which OS you have. If it's Vista or XP, then you may want to change the graphics settings so they're lower, because they consume memory.

G'day all! (first post here!! :P) this is my situation:

I have a server...and i have installed a printer to it - the Canon LBP 3200 - the server is a 32bit machine running win7 pro...anyways...this printer does not have ANY 64bit drivers (which my main machine runs win7 ulti x64) so i am unable to install the printer on my main machine...

I was wondering, is there a way to share it from the server to the 64bit machine without installing any drivers?

Or is there a way to install 32bit drivers on a 64bit Machine?

Or can anyone find any 64 bit drivers/custom 64bit drivers?

Thanx all!!

A:Sharing a printer from 32bit machine to 64bit machine without drivers.

ok so i tried this method: Go to Control Panel. Choose printer. Then choose Add Printer.

Choose Add a local printer. Click on Create a new port. The default in the drop down box is Local Port. Do not change that. Click Next.

A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name. Type in the \\computer name\printer name ie. My computer's name is basement and the printer name is EpsonSty so I typed in \\basement\epsonsty

But when i make my own port name it says access is denied... :S

I am trying to help a friend get her new Win-7 machine set up. I used the printer set-up wizard to install a networked printer in the new machine with absolutely no problem. Proved it would print from that machine.

Now, I get a call informing me that her old XP machine, which had been printing to the network printer with no problems, will no longer print. Documents go into the print queue, but they don't get printed. No error messages show up. I did some messing around via remote access, and finally removed the printer with the intention of reinstalling it. Scanning for network printers turned up several redundant instances of the same printer with different names. Some are identified as "invalid" some a "access denied". Bottom line. I can't get any of the selections to install.

On the Win-7 machine I did find a window that indicated that the printer is designated as being shared, but I didn't explicitly set it for sharing when I installed it. Also, I somehow got to a window that told me that for printers that were to be shared with other versions of windows I could optionally install drivers to support such machines. Didn't have the driver disk handy and took the window down. Now I can't even find it again.

I need some help in sorting this all out. Part of the problem is that out there in "network land" there are redundant remnants of previous installations that are being remembered inappropriately. I'd really li... Read more
