web page on desktop wont go away!

Q: web page on desktop wont go away!

Hi there,

I tried to create a shortcut for a web site I was on, but ended up with the whole page instead of the icon on my Desktop.

Also, my Microsoft Photo Editor seems to have disappeared. When I click on download attachment on an email that contains a picture, the Microsoft photo editor icon appears in the task bar but no picture appears.

Any ideas???

A: web page on desktop wont go away!

Theres a known bug with photo editor

If you right click on the icon in your task bar and choose expand this will pull it back up and get it working again

Have you set the image as a background?

If so right click on the desktop anywhere that doesnt have an icon on it and choose properites. Select the background tab and select a new background

If I click on the IE10 tile in metro view a webpage opens OK.I then click on the spanner icon and select "view on desktop". IE10 opens but the page won't load.
This is quite annoying as a lot of pages use plugins such as flash and these cannot be viewed in the metro view.

Any suggestion would be welcomed.

A:IE10 wont load a page in desktop view

That's strange. In that case I would suggest you to stay on Metro view .

I have a desktop HP (windows 7) and a new macbook pro 15 on which i am running both mac os x and windows 7. I can connect from my desktop to my laptop using remote desktop connection but not the other way around. I have a network set up and can see the computers are connected. I opened port 3389, enabled remote access on both machines, turned off firewall, avg, everything but nothing works. Whenever i try to connect it says initiating remote connection for a while then says 1) remote access is to the server is not enabled 2) the remote computer is turned off, 3) the remote computer is not available on the network. Btw both machines have Win 7 Ultimate. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A:Remote desktop wont connect to desktop.

I would try downloading this application and see if you still have the same problems.

Hi there, my problem is quite odd. When I open IE I get the "Page cannot be displayed" page as though i'm not connected but when I click refresh the page opens no problem. Sometimes I need to click refresh a couple of times. It's nothing to do with my homepage as it happens with different sites.
Sometimes it doesn't matter how many times i click refresh, it wont display and my connection is still active, I know that because I was chatting on MSN Messenger once when it happened and the connection icon beside my clock is always on.

Any suggestions?

A:Page wont display

Try checking (or even unchecking) "automatically detect settings" in Internet Options > Connections for your web connection.

Hi folks

I am unable to load this website

It is a survey panel, all above board. Ive emailed them and they cannot figure out any problem at their end. Ive emailed another forum too and the replies said that they had no problem getting it to work. SO it must be my problem!

Ive tried it in Firefox and IE 7, all to no avail. Im using Vista; the laptop is pretty new. No problem with any other websites. But this just wont work.

I have broadband, and using a wireless router.

I did have a problem submitting a post longer than 8-10 lines to Wealthy Appiliate forum about 6 months ago. Again they checked it out and tried everything and to no avail. If the post was shorter there was no problem. Really weird.

My ISP webmaster cannot figure out why this should be. Im not sure if the 2 problems are connected. Someone suggested the router firewall....??? Do I have one, I dont know! Im using Vista firewall. Why would the firewall affect 1 site or 1 post?

I've also, just tonight, tried it on my sisters connection down the road, and still no joy. She's using the same service provider.

A:This Page Wont Load in IE7 or Firefox

I just tried it and it loaded straight away. From what you've described it sounds like your ISP's filtering software could be blocking it. Can you ping the site?

I've run spybot and it finds nothing. Any suggestions?

Spybot has a setting that prevents potential hijackers from changing your homepage.
Turn it off, change your homepage to what you want. Go back into spybot and turn protection back on.

Very recently the following page stopped working on my pc.

The issue is only specific to this page, and using the same router on my laptop i am able to see the page without any trouble.

On my pc however, the page loads up distorted with no images and a bunch of line codes.

Im using Google Chrome and tried clear cache on both Chrome and IE. No diferences made. Using the Chromes Developer Tools. Tried also disable all extensions repair Chrome and even Unnisnstall and Re-Installed it.

The page error can be seen here and here using Chromes Developer Console i notice it shows alot of errors .

Since i can display the page on my laptop, i found this very weird to happen.

I Apreciate your advice and help

Internet Explorer 7 driving me up the wall HELP! I can access Skype and MSN IM and the network shows as up and active but the web browser refuses to render both IE7 and Firefox.

I tried ipconfig/ flush DNS as well as other things advised in this forum. I can ping all websites successfully. Please help. Im on Vista SP2

All this started after installing IE8 which gave the same problems.

Thanks in advance for your help.

A:Can Ping, IM and SKype BUT IE7 wont render page!

1. Try opening the IE without the addons and try to browse. If you are able to browse then remove the addons.

If it doesn't work:

2. Unchecked all the proxy(if any) from both the browsers. Close and open all the opened browser windows and try browsing again. If you are able to browse then the problem has been solved.

If it doesn't work:

Boot your computer in "safe mode with networking" and try to browse. If you are able to browse then uninstall all the anitivirus program and reinstall it again.

Follow the above mentioned steps and give it a try..

A:IE 8 wont display page, FixIt crashes to

If you are having trouble viewing websites, here are a few potential fixes:

Try enabling compatibility mode. It is the broken page icon next to the refresh button on the toolbar. Here?s a good resource from the IEBlog that talks about compatibility mode in detail if you?d like to learn more:

If that doesn?t work, run IE in No Add-ons Mode. Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) - If this fixes the issue, then go to Tools -> Manage Add-ons and enable the add-ons one by one to find which one was causing the problem.

You can also try resetting Internet Explorer's settings by going to Tools > Internet Options and then the "Advanced" tab, and click "Reset..."

If you?re still not having any luck, I recommend you reinstall IE8 on your system.

I hope this solves your issue!

I am looking at a friends desktop and i am stumped. The problem is that when they go on the internet to the website the web page loads normally but when trying to log in there is a delay, then when you click on a review of a product there is a long delay of approx 25 seconds and then you get the internet explorer cannot display this page, i have tried it on different browsers, ie firefox and chrome but still the same, this is what stumps me is that i brought the desktop to my house and logged in to my friens which account and through my router it connects and displays the reviews no problem at all. I even took my laptop to my friends house and that would log in to the which website but when i click on a review same thing, internet explorer cannot display this page. i reset the router but no good. I cant imagine it being the router or can it, i dont know what else to try.

Any ideas much appreciated

A:Solved: Reviews on web page wont open

It does sound like a driver issue, if you've tested the clients (your friends) computer on a different network, and loads fine. I would assume its the router especially if your own laptop is also having this on the same network as the clients.

Tell your friend to get in touch with the provider and ask if theres any connection faults they should be able to run tests over the phone. But also try and get your self a new one sent out. Shouldn't be any extra charges as the one your friend owns isnt providing the service that its intended for.

Thats all i can think of. Hope this helps and good luck

The website is and until very recently there was no problem with it. I know the site is OK through other PCs accessing it. When I try and do it a pop down says " FIREFOX PREVENTED THIS PAGE FROM AUTOMATICALLY REDIRECTING TO ANOTHER PAGE". I click onto the "ALLOW" button and the pop down window vanishes and the progress icon just spins.....

I have tried checking for cookies being set, and even tried switching off firewall for a few mins whilst I checked again, but the same happens each time.

Any reason why one website should be an issue; what can I do to resolve, any expert technical help welcome from anyone who actually knows why this problem occurs. Thank you.

Hello rover4.6,

You are infected with a particularly nasty and potentially destructive infection known as ZeroAccess aka Sirefef, and several other names.

Since this Windows 7, my first recommendation is for you to try System Restore.

You have the following restore points available:

==== System Restore Points ===================
RP1170: 7/14/2012 9:14:58 AM - Windows Update
RP1172: 7/17/2012 10:16:39 PM - Windows Update
RP1174: 7/20/2012 7:31:39 PM - Installed HTC Sync.
RP1176: 7/21/2012 11:26:28 PM - Windows Update

RP1180: 7/24/2012 11:02:37 AM - Installed Speco Central
RP1182: 7/24/2012 11:05:47 AM - Installed MSXML 4.0 SP2 Parser and SDK

RP1188: 7/25/2012 11:00:08 PM - Installed Ad-Aware
RP1190: 7/26/2012 6:42:50 AM - Removed Ad-Aware

To minimize interference, it's best you perform the System Restore without Windows loaded. Restart your computer and tap F8 to bring up the Advanced Menu, then click Repair your computer

Follow the prompt to enter language, keyboard input method, and then the prompt to enter a password. If the machine does not have a password, simply click Enter.

In the next menu, use the arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight System Restore and press Enter.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

Hello all.
I have recently inherited my brothers pc. I wanted to clean it out and start fresh. I cant seem to get Internet explorer(i believe its IE6) to open mre than one page. Example... Say I am on and i want to keep this page up and open a new page to I cant. Instead the page goes to page.) I know there are a few problems with this pc. It was attacked with about:blank. I dont think it ever recovered. I cant even run the scans on the forum "before you run a highjackthis log u shoulod do the following scans" I cant run those scans. the pc will not allow them to load. So, I guess for this momment I need to find out how to change IE so I can have more htan onepage up. I would greatly approciate any help. Very lost here.

Well you could always go to the extremes and reformat the machine so that the about:blank or w/e is overwritten by a new, clean system.

Iv gotten a pesky worm or some spam program and than had it removed with another program that searched it and got rid of it nicely. After that I think there’s something wrong with browsers since they don't load any pages but only in safe mode they do. Everything else such as streaming P2P programs seem to work. I tried both Explorer and FireFox.

A:Browsers wont load page but everything else connects

No difference.
I did not have System Restore On during infection and removal. Plus during removal it was suggested to keep i toff, so System Restore wouldn't play much of a part here since I dought itl have a previous good time to restore to.

The removal program I used was Smitfraudfix.
The infection was "SpyGuard" that was installed through ActiveX maybe or Explorer at least from some website.
So Im not sure if its Port 80 or what thats blocked...
Just browsing wont load pages, cuz its waiting for a reply...
Other connections seem fine.
I un-installed MCAfee's SecurityCentre Firewall and no help.
I tried LSPFix, but no difference.
Only Safe Mode can browse pages.

Get Started - Print a publication - Publisher -

If you use the check box to save your print settings immediately below the RGB Composition setting, the imposition should be saved with your publication.

The new Backstage View for printing looks like this:

On the left are the print settings and on the right the preview pane. Changes made to the setting in the left pane (of the Print Back stage) will affect both the preview and the printed result. Changes made to the setting in the preview pane (of the Print Back stage) will affect the preview, and will not affect the printed result.
Note Some of these controls are dependent on other settings, for example the color control will only be available if your printer can print in color and the front/back transparency slider will only be available if you choose print on both sides of the paper.

Ok, I'm sure there's an answer somewhere on Google but I can't seem to phrase it right, so here goes:

When I minimize Chrome or bring up another program like iTunes, I get a blank desktop page with none of my icons on it. Can't left-click OR right-click on it, but the taskbar still works, and if I click Show Desktop, there are my icons again. BUT if I should change anything or open up a program, back to the blank desktop.

This isn't the end of the world but it's damned annoying. Please help!

I have hp pavilion g6-2249 wm notebook. My laptop is 4 months old. Two days ago when I started my
pc, the welcome page opens and then I sign in. Everything is ok on the apps page that immediately opens.
If I click the desktop app icon, it goes to the desktop and the entire page starts to flash, it shows the desktop
for 2 seconds and then then flashes to blue for 5 seconds and back and forth, etc.

The desktop will not stay open long enough for me to do anything. I cannot get it to start in safe mode. I clicked
F8 repeatedly on start up but nothing happens. I used the esc on startup and ran every test offered except BIOS.
I don't know what to do with that so I didn't mess with it. All tests were ok.

If I go back to the app page from the flashing desktop, the app page and charms start flashing also. I can't even
shut down properly then. Norton 360 runs in the background all the time but I can't get to it to do a scan. I
can't get to any file. The only way to get online is to turn off pc and turn on later. App page does not flash at
that time. I go to search and click on Explorer and I can go to my homepage. If I click on required addons then
the background starts flashing and I have to reset my cursor every two letter that I type. I am going crazy.
Can someone help me???

A:Desktop Page Flashing

If you can do this, you can get to Safe Mode:

Windows key + C.
Hold shift key and click RESTART.
then you have all the options.

Click on Advanced Options then Startup Settings.
Click Restart and you have almost the full advanced Boot Options menu like XP, Vista or Win 7.

I realized some days ago that my system was slow in responding. But not long i got the blue screen with white writings about 'crash dump things'. So i press the power button to switch off and on again. I enter windows normally. So fast forward to 3 days later. The system was responding very slow again so i used the power button again. On putting it on, the system will just stop with a blinking cursor at the left top corner(after the bios page). So i used the recovery cd that came wt it to try repair. The only option that worked was 'startup repair' and 'command prompt'. The 'system restore', 'image restore' from the menu did not respond to selection. So i used the startup repair option. On finishing, i restarted the system. But now, after the bios page, what i got was a blinking empty screen with the fan blowing simultaneously as if it wants to work normally. The f8 thing isn't responding at all. Please any solution?

This is my first time posting a question any time any where so please bare with me.

I am running my computer with windows XP. I cannot get it to get past the main page (desktop) when I go down to the task bar where it says START i get an hour glass. I cannot click on any of my desk top Icons and have them do anything and I cannot go into the start menu. I have tried control, shift, escape to see if I can run off a cd this could be of help if a cd is needed to fix the problem. I did try to boot the computer off of a disk thinking perhaps I had a virus (I still think that might be the problem) but I was unable to do this. I reset the boot to start from disk and when it started in dos and gave me my 4 choices I chose boot from disk then it said press f1 or f2 to continue. I pressed F1. when I had the Norton anti-virus disk in there it gave me the choice for normal startup or start up from disk. I tried to choose start up from disk but it wouldn't let me. I tried this several times with 2 different versions all with the same result. My 30 seconds ran out and it started up normally and then got stuck on the desk top page. I tried the same boot with the windows XP disk hoping that it might have a diagnostic bit to it, but no luck I chose boot form disk and it still went to the desk top page and got stuck. Anyone with any information or suggestions on what I might do would be greatly appreciated. I would hate to think that I will have to take it in somewhere only to ha... Read more

OK so I was watching TV on my PC last night, woke up to find PC had restarted itself, I shutdown from the login screen. Now when trying to bootup, it gives a warning, prompting me to run startup repair, if I do this it runs & gives option to do system restore, but I cannot do it as the mouse & keyboard won't work! If I try and start windows normally I get the BSOD with "Page Fault in nonpaged area" warning at the top. Have tried booting from Windows 7 DVD but again the mouse & keyboard won't work, they only work in the BIOS, would appreciate some help, thanks!

Start the computer and press F8 at bootup. Go into the Advanced boot menu (Safe Mode etc) First try Safe Mode, if that fails then choose Fix Your Computer. It will do a Start Up Repair. If this fails it should give you the RE (Recovery Environment) choose Command Prompt and type chkdsk /R and press enter. Type a Y and manually reboot the computer.

Although I can boot up windows, it doesn't start right, it always asks to do startup repair before Windows will boot and
I have to select Start up Windows Normally.
When I run Startup Repair, it hangs indefinitely, so I made a boot disc.
When I run Startup Repair from the boot disc I get a message that an error cannot be repaired. Here is the log
The Windows Repair Problem SignatureProblem Event Name: Startup Repair Offline

I do not have any External Media connected!  So this is weird!

I am not sure how to identify the problem and solve it.

Are you able to start up in Safe Mode, if so are you able to reach your desktop? After that you can try and run MBAM again and see if what it finds, and/or fixes. Then try rebooting it again, and see what happens.
