I just upgraded from win98 to winXP today and I installed win media player 9 also. My mp3's and wma's play great...its just that my files with a .mpg extension play the sound only...and will not show the video. Also some of my mpg files get an error message saying "the file extension does not match the file format" , but this is strange because these files worked fine while i was using win media player 7.1 yesterday before the upgrade today.

This has never happened before.

Any advice?

We are having a problem on a Windows XP Pro SP2 machine running Windows media player 10. It says "this version of media player is incompatible" when you try and open it. We have tried removing version 10, and putting on 9 but you get the same problem. This happens if you download the install file from the website or install WMP from the WindowsUpdate site. Has anyone come across this before, or got any ideas on how to get WMP to work?

Thanks a lot,

Whenever I insert CD's or DVD's into either of my optical drives, Windows Media Player as well as My Computer recognize that media had been added. The problem is, when I eject the media (whether it's pushing the eject button on the drive or right clicking as selecting eject) My computer as well as WMP fail to recognize that the media has been removed. If I insert a new cd or dvd, both my computer as well as WMP see it as the original piece of media. The other strange thing is iTunes is able to accurately determine if there is media in a drive or not.

Any idea's as to what is going on with my drives? I'm pretty sure it's just a software issue with Vista or WMP, since iTunes doesn't seem to be affected. I have no idea on how to resolve this. Thanks in advance for any help

Just a quick update with things that I've tried. First I checked for errors on the C drive to see if a file or something was corrupt. After that didn't work, I uninstalled and reinstalled the drives, again to no avail.

recently i have reformatted my hard drive with windows XP professional service pack 2. I have spent the last week sorting stuff out moving stuff around installing programs and in this happening i accidentally deleted the folder in C:/Program Files called windows media player. So i went to the Microsoft website downloaded windows media player 11.

Unfortunately i have noticed a number of missing things.
1. None of the shortcut icons, quick launch icons and start menu icons of windows media player are there after installation

2. I cannot view any online content which requires windows media player

3. the windows media player "mini player" (the plug-in where you can minimize windows media player and control it from the task bar) eg. playing, stopping, fast forward and rewind options.

I have tried to reinstall the program 3 times now, searched everywhere on the internet for a solution including all the Microsoft online help files, Rebooted several times and looked in remote assistance. Could anyone please help me find a fix for this or tell me what the problem is? Thx timmy

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail. I cannot update my current version (6) from its update feature( it says there is no update available , when I tried), but version 6 still works...only I have to go into the program file where it is and open it there.

It was working fine, the option still loads up, however when i select the track/album info, the small window closes and the track remains unmodified.
I'm stumped as of what to do, I've looked around for solutions, tried updating, reinstalling, even upgrading from WMP10 to 11 to fix the problem, but with no sucess.

if anyone could offer any means of alternative or support I'd greatly appreciate it.

Hi everyone!

I have several movies (.avi files) on my PC and tried to watch them. I played one with no problems, but the others show video with no audio. Right before Windows Media Player opens the file, it says "error downloading codec". I had WMP version 10 and checked the settings and they were set to download new codecs automatically. So I upgraded to WMP version 11.

With WMP version 11 it says "downloading codec", then "codec aquired" and it opens the video - no audio again.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

A:Windows Media Player 12, "Find Album Info" not working

Try this, open Services and scroll down to

Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service

Set it to disable, and reboot. See if that works. It's possible that something is using WMP and not allowing it to connect.

Well, you have tried most of the things recommended. Have you run the System File Checker? This should restore original system files

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Also, a repair install should correct this

Repair Install

You have changed so much that you now have a different error, therefore I'd suggest one of the above. For future reference, while you had the original error, THIS may have worked as well.

I'm running WMP 11.0.6000.6344. When I used to play a song from an album in my library (from the "Songs" view), it would automatically add the whole album (and everything after it in the library) to my "Now Playing" playlist. For some reason now it only plays the single song, and then just stops. Any thoughts?

I realize this is kind of obscure, but I thought maybe someone on here might know about it.

Hello There,

New to the forum - Greetings everyone!

I've recently purchased a new machine that came preloaded with Vista Home Premium.

I upgraded WMP to 11 and have been ripping a load of my albums onto the machine to take advantage of the new media features within Vista.

I've encountered a pretty odd problem that I'm hoping someone may be able to solve for me.

I've brought over a load of backed up music from my old machine and when playing these tracks and using the slider, its fine...when I drag the slider to a particular part of the song and release it plays instantly from that location.

After ripping around 200 tracks from various albums, I find that the seek slider (slider to adjust position in the track) isn't very responsive with any of these tracks (on any of the ripped albums). When I drag the slider to a particular part of the track and release, there is perhaps a 2-3 second delay before it updates to the location and plays.

Does anyone know why this would be happening and perhaps how I could solve this?

I know it seems a "not very important" thing - But for me, it's pretty important

Any help grealty appreciated.

Hi, I've been having some problems with my computer (Win XP home) and wondered if anyone could help out there.
A few weeks ago I left the computer downloading something pretty safe overnight (I've done it several times before) and when I came back in the morning some things were playing up. It doesn't seem to be a virus as the rest of the system is working OK and it doesn't show up on any scans. Most such as problems with the printer spoolers and IE I've managed to sort out but Windows Media Player is still giving me grief. I used to have wmp 10 but when I opened it it said the internal application error message, so I uninstalled it and rolled back to wmp 9. This worked for a while until then it started up the internal application error message. I've tried installing wmp 10 again many many times (including things to it that have been suggested in other forums like moving files to other directories) but it just fails claiming that "to update windows run windows media player 10 setup again". I've tried hundreds of fixes from various internet forums including re-regestring vbscript.dll and jscript.dll, uninstalling and reinstalling wmp via Add/Remove programs and even fiddling with the registry editor but none seem to work.
I've tried installing wmp 9 again but it just says "another newer version is already on your machine". I've tried uninstalling wmp completely by deleting the folder in program files but unsurpri... Read more

Media player keeps getting interrupted by "things" - other programs I guess. Both while playing mp3's and music videos. It doesn't shut down. It just sort of shorts out the music... until I guess whatever is finished bothering it.

It happens
-When I try to rename files or move them around in Windows Explorer [not the ones playing].

-While on the internet. No certain reason that I can see. The websites/webpages I have open don't appear to have any media player music playing. It happens when I use either IE or Foxfire browsers.

Is there a button or something I can select that can keep Windows Media Player from being affected by other programs? It is verY irritating.

I have the following MUTED in volume control:

Thanks so much!

Sounds like your system is working too hard and whan any other activity is required there is insufficient CPU time left for the video or audio, so it pauses.

I have a "Netmedia" media player that pops up a small skin in the upper left hand corner of my desktop, every single time I run any sort of media file, video, audio, whatever. The file will run correctly in the normal player that I have selected or is defaulted, but this Netmedia skin opens and I have to close it manually. There is NO mention of netmedia in my registry, or in my "Add/Remove Programs" list. I'd rather remove it completely from my computer, but at this point would settle for being able to disable it.
I'm pretty sure from what research I've done on the net, that it is related to the "Media key" multi-function keyboard that I've had for several years. I recently downloaded an updated driver for that keyboard, and the problem has been here ever since. I really don't want to rollback that driver if I can help it. It solved several other specific keyboard problems I was having intermittently with the shipped original drivers.

I'm trying to fix my sister's new computer before she heads to college. When you type, "=78y5" automatically enters into whichever box your typing in (including this one) and causes windows media player to open. It has done it 6 times since I started typing this. The first time it did this, a XXX video popped up. I deleted the video but the code keeps coming up and opening the player every 10 seconds of typing -- it basically makes the computer unusable. Also, it periodically looks like it's scanning the page (the text flickers as it scans down). I've run Spybot and McAfee in safe mode and they both turn up nothing. I even took the computer to Toshiba and they reset it to facory settings and it didn't wipe this thing out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It may be something to do with the link/site rather than your player. Version 6 is also a bit more limited than later ones.
Can you post the link to see if someone else can view these animations?

I have been using Windows Media Player as my main music player for a long time, but I have been having a lot of problems since I updated from Windows Vista to Windows 8.

When I listen to music, the "date last played" data seems to get updated with the current date. However, when I restart WMP12, most of the songs I just listened to look like they never have been played. The "date last played" information is gone. Sometimes, ratings I have given songs seem to disappear also.

I really like WMP (v.11 more than v.12), but I need to be able to see what I have listened to. I would hate to have to change music player just because of this.

I have tried almost everything:
1. Rebuilding the library through the "restore media library" option in WMP12
2. Rebuilding the library through the Windows Media Player troubleshooter in the Control Panel (when I'm done with this, it still says that the library is corrupted)
3. Deleting all the library files in AppData>Local>Microsoft>Media Player
4. Doing a clean boot
5. Disabling Media Player from Control panel and reinstalling it
6. Running a full computer virus/malware scan
7. Deleting the library files and reinstalling WMP at the same time.

A:Windows Media Player 12 doesn't update "Date last played" data

Do you by any chance regularly run the utility CCleaner to clean up temporary files? If so, go to the Applications tab in the main window, and uncheck the box in front of Windows Media Player. I'll guess that a Media Player log keeps track of what media has been played. Unchecking the option box will keep CCleaner from cleaning that particular log.

If you use any other cleanup utility, perform the same inspection of its settings. Some antimalware & system utility "suites" incorporate such a cleaner: look for settings and options relating to Windows logs, expecially WMP logs.

If, on the other hand, WMP is corrupting its database or log files all by itself, see what happens if you visit the Privacy tab in Windows Media Player 12 Options tabs, and make sure that the boxes in the History section are checked for Music, Video, Pictures, & Playlists. You can try selecting the Clear History & Clear Cache option buttons, you to see if afterwards WMP does a better job if keeping track of the last-played data.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

[By the way, I think CCleaner is the best of its sort of program, but it does have to be used carefully. It has extensive "UnDo" features built-in.]

I also have a network sharing service problem -

Vista displays, occasion (and I havent worked out WHAT occasions yet):

"windows media player network sharing service stopped working and was closed" - followed by some bulls?$t about windows informing me of a solution when it becomes available

This pop up appears relentlessly - about once every 30 seconds, and i can see the system performance hitting 100% CPU for 5 seconds or so each time it does.

I did what is suggested on here - ie disable the service - and it STILL comes up with the eror. Any ideas????

Windows Explorer is not a browser. If you kill Windows Exoplorer, your desktop is gone and you have a black screen.
Internet Explorer is a browser.

Since MS has started issuing updates on the first, second and third Tuesday of the month, if you have auto updates on, things can be downloading or windows is looking for updates and the svchost (there are several so you might see a few running in task manager) can be 50% to 100% of the CPU.

In task manager at the bottom left, select show processes from all users.

Win7, latest version of Media Player. I have a ton of music that all of a sudden is shown in Media Player as "Unknown Artist", "Unknown Album". The track names are still OK, and the actual MP3 files are still in the original locations (\\Music\Artist\Album\## TrackName) (where ## = track number).

iTunes shows everything properly, but Media Player is wrong. I've tried a tag editor but even with the correct settings, it doesn't want to re-tag the files - it wants to rename them. The tags within the files are correct.

Wondering if there's a "cache" of some sort, or another way to force Media Player to re-scan my entire library, and update the tags based on the directory structure. Any ideas?

A:Solved: Media player shows everything as "unknown"

The basic problem here is that iTunes use ID3v2.4 tags, Windows (and WMP) uses ID3v2.3 tags and can't read ID3v2.4. So if you update the tags with iTunes and then add those tracks to WMP they're going to show up as "Unknown Artist". This is always going to cause problems if you try to use both iTunes and WMP libraries at the same time.

So pick which one you like better to use as your primary library and use the other one as a player only. You can use Mp3tag to take a look at the tags, see which versions are on the files and convert ones that are incorrect.

If you use iTunes as your primary library then I would delete the WMP database. But before you do you should turn off monitor folders so that WMP doesn't automatically add music files to it's library. Here's how to delete the database, ignore the last step:

Hi all, I've got a problem with WMP 11. Basically, any stream which is multiple bitrate encoded is being streamed at a lower bitrate than it could be. One site is streaming at 89kbps, I don't know what bitrate I used to get but it was more than that. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? I've already tried disabling intelligent streaming by appending "&WMThinning=0" to the stream URL but this just leads to an generic "cannot play file" type error message.

I finally got fed up with WMP 10 (I have the patient of a Saint, apparently) and was never very happy with version 9. Numerous crashes, freezes and errors and whatnot.
I would like to make the switch to Winamp 5.21.
I was able to go to add remove programs > saw Windows Media Player > tried to uninstall but only got the option to "roll back" to previous version 9. I then restarted the computer. I went back to add remove and WMP is gone but there are remnants. (see attachment 1) I tried to play a tune to see what player came up, and the install thing for WMP9 came up, so I proceeded with the instructions to install, but it's not showing in the add remove programs in the control panel, just the items circled in attachment 1. I have not restarted the computer since the 1st time, so maybe it's there now ....
I then went to C://Programs folder> and there was the WMP folder and contents. (see attachments 2 and 3) It would not let me delete it and gave this error message (see attachment 4).

1. How do I completely remove WMP from this computer and keep my sanity?
2. If I cannot, is it necessary to remove all remnants, in order for Winamp to work without conflict?
3. Can anyone assure me I won't have the same/similar issues with Winamp?

Thanks very much in advance

PS I have not downloaded Winamp as yet. Am going to try to do it properly.

Years ago I installed K-Lite Codec Pack with MPC and would try to change the brightness in MPC by going View > Options > Miscellaneous. Then there is the options to change brightness, contrast, hue, saturation.

But these options NEVER worked. You can't even adjust the sliders. So I looked for a solution online and I found it. You were to right click on the "ffdshow video decoder" icon in the system tray and select "ffdshow video decoder"

then go to "Overlay" and adjust it from there. It would always work.

Well, a few days ago I did a complete reformat of my harddrive and lost everything. I recently installed the new version of Combined Community Codec Pack and now, when I use the second way of attempting to change brightness, it no longer works. You can adjust the sliders, but they do nothing. I don't know what to do? What exactly is VMR9 and what does it do? Do I need this?

A:Using "Media Player Classic" How To Change Brightness??

The Combined Community Codec Pack is not the same as the K-Lite Codec Pack.
Since you previously managed to achieve what you wanted to do using K-Lite, I suggest you stick with K-Lite.
The fact that you are now using something different may account for your problem.

What is VMR-9?:

I reformatted my computer recently, with all the same hardware and software I usually do, but this time I noticed something different.

On my E: partition (non-system), there is a folder called "9ca233a934811ecf86022b48e5" which contains two folders: "AMD64" and "i386".

I researched a little bit, and found out those folders pertain to a windows 64-bit edition, but I don't have anything to do with a 64-bit edition, mine's a 32-bit.

Here's my system specs:WinXP Media Center Edition Version 2002 SP3
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6300
NVidia GeForce 7600 GS 512MB
ST3300831AS 300GB HD
I have my HD partitioned to 3 drives:14GB System Drive (C:)
40GB Document Drive (D:)
190GB Storage Drive (E:)
I also have 40GB partitioned as an Acronis True Image Home Secure Zone, for storing Disk Images.

I was wondering why those two folders are on my E: drive, when I'm running a 32-bit version of Windows. Also, (sorry if this should be in another thread) my computer has been restarting unexpectedly while I've just been doing random things on it. Nothing graphics-intensive, or anything like that, so I don't know why it's doing that either.

Thanks for your help and time,

A:"AMD64" and "i386" folders on WinXP Media Center 32-bit edition

It sounds like those are temporary files from a driver installation. A lot of companies seem to package every possible driver in the zip or executable, extract them all to the hard drive, find the one the system needs and copy it to the system32 directory, then leave the rest behind.

In that case they should be safe to delete. It would take a bit more research on your part to make sure. Maybe a readme or help file somewhere in the directory?

I am going 'round & 'round with this issue. I log on as limited user account for security. However, when I am on that acct, I cannot copy files to the external HP drive - I have to switch over to the admin user account to do so. In order to use the limited account for this operation, I have read that you should disable simple file sharing, (on admin acct), then rt clik on the file u want to copy - this then opens a menu with security tab where you are supposed to be able to give full control to the limited acct for that file. My admin acct that brings up this menu has those boxes to check grayed out. Also, do you have to rt click and give full permission for any file that you want to copy? (once you have this all figured out) - Seems a bit cumbersome. Any ideas anyone?? Thanks.

A:Windows 7 32 bit, when loading "Open With: ?" "File: Media" comes up

There must be an error with one of the startup settings.
Please use Autoruns by Sysinternals/Microsoft to see more info about Programs loading with your system.
Pay attention to Logon tab.

Looks like for some reason it is trying to load a folder as a file. "Media" is a part of a folder path.
Try to uncheck all values, where Media is a part of the path.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

The tech guys on that forum were unable to find the source... Read more

Hi All,

Thanks in advance for any help.

I purchased and installed an Iomega 34766 NAS yesterday. I have three machines that run Windows 7 (2 - Ulitmate 32bit & 64bit; 1 - Professional 32bit) and a Windows xp machine.

I am having trouble getting the Windows 7 Professional 32bit machine to show the NAS as a computer under the network folder. It will show the NAS as a Media Device and Other device. I can access the device as a media device, but when I click other device, it opens a IE browser and errors out. I have not been able to map the device in windows explorer either. This NAS has a print server built in and it will not show the printer either.

My other two Windows 7 Ultimate 32 & 64 bit (Desktop-Windows & HTPC) machines work just fine and the NAS shows under the computer and media device and does not show as other device. The printer pluged in the NAS works like a charm.

The primary computer that I need to work is the windows 7 professional version (LPC-PC) thats not working.

I posted a screen shot of what I am looking at from the computer that does not work and one of the machines that is working.

As a side note, LPC-PC is my laptop and it is the machine that is not working. Desktop-Windows and HTPC are the two machines that it is working just fine on.

I am able to connect to LPC-PC from Desktop-Windows; however I can not connect to Desktop-Windows from LPC-PC.

When I first started messing with LPC-PC it was not even showi... Read more

Well I solved my own problem and feel a little silly. I just happened to check my msconfig.exe and I had it set to selective startup with the first option for services unchecked.

Everything is now up and running. My NAS is showing and I can connect to all my computers.

I got a sudden unexpected blue screen.
When my computer was restarting, I got the message

"PXE-E61 Media test failure, check cable"

I went and did a Hard Drive Self Test, and got the message

Any advice on how to proceed would be appreciated.

I'm trying to do a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit but i can't get the installer to load.
I have access to a Xubuntu install and a OS X install.
The original hard drive Windows 7 was installed on stopped working completely. So, I've bought a brand new one.
I followed the steps I did the first time I installed Windows 7 - converting the iso to and img with OS X's hdiutil and the dd command to burn it to a USB.
This time I would just get a "please insert proper boot media" error.
I went to my Xubuntu computer (it's used like a chromebook - i'm not a big linux guy) and tried WinUSB.
These USB keys lead to a screen that had a flashing underscore a few spaces from the top of the screen.
It dawned on me that the first thing I did when I installed windows the first time was update the bios. So I tried flashing a few different BIOS versions, but none of them made a difference>
I really need help - I can't think of anything else to try
Thank you very much!
Cannot boot into Win7 installer. OS X made USB keys show "insert proper boot media" - Ubuntu made keys show "flashing underscore" - Tried 3 different BIOS versions. Win7 -has- worked here before...

I just purchased a Seagate external drive as a backup for my computer.

Without me doing anything the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon in the lower part of my computer screen now says "Open Devices and Printers" which is where it takes you when you click on it.

I hesitate to plug my external drive in if I can't safely remove it.

Does anyone know how to get the "Safely Remove Hardware" option back?

Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

Need help to resolve this long-standing mystery.
My Lenovo W530 laptop runs perfectly in both wired and wireless environments, at home as well as "on the road".

But when it is connected wired when fresh booting to Windows it always comes up with "multiple networks" showing as connected, but neither has Internet access. One network is truly my LAN, and the other shows as "unidentified network":

Network and Sharing Center shows both of these networks:

and both of these networks are associated with the Intel wired LAN ethernet adapter in my laptop:

A:Laptop wired connection starts with "multiple networks", no Internet

Well, prompted by my own request for help in this thread, I decided to do some additional research and searching on needing to delete an extraneous network.

Quite remarkably, I found this thread from back in 2010 in a networking forum asking specifically for help on "My Window 7 PC receives a double gateway from the DHCP server. Why?". The text of the question sounded essentially identical to my own problem:I have a windows 7 pc in a windows 2003 server environment. every now and then (about twice a day), the gateway setting is changed to and
Now, the setting is correct, but the is not correct. In fact, it blocks all network traffic.
Whereas my own problem saw this at immediately at boot time while this poster saw the symptom occur occasionally during the day, the actual problem description was effectively the same.
Well, reading the various responses suggesting solutions, there was one reply in particular which seemed eminently helpful and promising (from someone whose 13,900 posts in a networking forum suggests great knowledge and experience on the topic of solving networking mysteries). Sounded to me much like the standard "have you tried a complete power recycle" (i.e. pull the plug, wait 30-seconds, and plug it back in) suggestion for a problematic electronic component like a cable system DVR that you might get from the tech support phone CSR, as a "can't hurt, and can only help" good f... I just updated to XP SP3 from SP2 via Windows Update and now whenever I start up my computer, it is under the account named "Administrator" though I had only ever used an account under my name (which was defined as computer administrator). This "Administrator" account has only a fraction of the software I have installed and the personalization settings aren't the same.

I can log off "Administrator" and log into my main account fine, but when I look in "User Accounts" in Control Panel, there is no account named "Administrator", only my main account (with the computer administrator subtext) and a grayed-out Guest account which is turned off. Everything else as far as I can tell functions fine.

I've read that there's a "hidden" Administrator account for Safe Mode or something like it... but I'm not booting into Safe Mode.

Has "Administrator" somehow become the default account? How do I stop this?

I'm using XP Pro.

I installed a wireless internet thingy on my computer to obtain internet when living with roommates. Ever since then, everytime I start up, I end up having to restart over and over again, until the log in screen that pops up has the curved edges. I have recently removed the hardware (wireless card/thingy) and now I am unable to get the computer to start up with the "curved edges" even after restarting OVER AND OVER AND OVER. I am up to my neck in anger....I need some help!!! Anyone know what may cause this!?!?!...and how I can fix it???

Thanks for any help!

Display Properties, make sure that Windows XP is selected as your theme.
