System Recovery Question for my compaq Presario S4000NX

Q: System Recovery Question for my compaq Presario S4000NX

Hi all

This is a very common question for which I couldn'g find a specific answer after searching the forum. Please excuse for a redundant question. I have necessary system recovery disk to perform destructive recovery of my PC. The main reason for the recovery is my suspicion that my PC is cluuterred with junk from my past years of PC use. I am having a C:\windows directory almost 3.8G which i feel is too high? Also the C:Windows\system32 files are approx 1 G. I have done disk defragment cleaned up using disk clean and cleaned my Temp folders. Now i have decided to do a system recovery to solve this issue. My question is should i remove my PCI cards that I installed for eg. IEEE 1394 firewire card and additional RAM and hard drivethat I added as regular upgrades to my machine. Will leaving this in my machine during recovery crash or cause undesirable effects to my computer. My other question is if a high disk usage to the ture of 3.8 in my C:\WINDOWs directory a normal for XP home edition. Many thanks for your kind review and response.

A: System Recovery Question for my compaq Presario S4000NX

Hello lak2000

I would remove any PCI cards which you added ( i.e they were not in the machine originally, so will not be involved in the Restore)
Reinstall them after the Restore

You can leave the hard drive, as long as it is not external.
Just make sure to restore to the correct Drive (check the drive letter)
You can leave the RAM

Disconnect all peripherals such as printer etc.

For XP Pro, my Windows directory is 3GB
My System32 folder is 1GB

I should add that I recently reinstalled XP, so these figures will be higher for a system which has been running longer.

Here`s my question.

Is it possible to recover or view files that were not backed up at all before or during the factory recovery?

I`m not talking factory restore, Im talking factory recovery.
My D drive is the factory image partition.

I recently did a factory recovery which apparently completely wipes all memory that was not backed up and restores the computer to its original factory shipped condition.

The harddrive, before the recovery, had some personal information, bank info and whatnot, that was deleted, however, my computer is gonna be sold soon and knowing that people can recover deleted files even after having deleted them, I decided to use factory recovery as well to insure the safety of my info.

I am, now, just confirming that the files are indeed safe.Is there any way to recover them, even after the recovery?

Im running on a Compaq presario vista 32

A:Factory recovery question for vista 32 HP compaq Presario

Hi -

There are many different standards when it comes to clearing and sanitizing hard drives. Some are satisfied with writing zeroes over each byte - 1 pass. Others want 35 passes with variable characters written.

Is it possible that someone could obtain your personal info from the hard drive? Yes. Is it probable... probably not. There is never a guarantee - especially with unknown future technological advancements.

If you want complete peace of mind on this subject - replace the hard drive. For near-complete peace of mind - wipe the entire HDD with KillDisk then re-install Vista.

Got the infamous "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" on my mom's compaq presario desktop sr1900nx. It appears on a black screen after the red/white compaq screen. It takes about 30 seconds for the error to appear. There is a blinking underscore the line below it. I have done several hours of searching and have tried several things to get to at least to the system recovery area, but I can not even do that. When I cut power to it and try at least starting the boot process, I do get the COMPAQ red/white screen with 3 options on it. ESC to enter boot menu, F1 for setup, F10 for system recovery. The ESC & F1 work, but that's about it. I can not access the system recovery. It does NOT have a floppy drive, nor did the PC come with any recovery disks and of course I do not have any. I am just looking at this point to recover some pictures/documents from it...then as far as I am concerned it is trash. It was running windows XP. Is this even possible without spending a ton of cash on recovery cd's or for file recovery? I have also tried F8, Pause/Break and have hunted the setup/boot menu for anything that could help - and found nothing.

Thank you.

A:Compaq Presario Disk Boot Failure F10 system recovery not working

Hi Luchipboo, and welcome to BleepingComputer.

That Compaq has a recovery partition, this is why it didn't come with the discs. If you have the user's manual it should explain how to use it.

If you wish to backup the files that are on there first, you can alway install that hdd in another desktop as a slave drive. This will required setting the jumper on the rear of the drive in the slave position, and connect to the IDE data connector in the middle location. You should be able to access your files from there.

A friend of mine brought me her Compaq Presario S5140WM Desktop PC for help installing a new graphics card. What I found was that her computer was soo infected with viruses and spyware that some of the files needed to install the new drivers was corrupted and the hardware driver install failed. I ran an online virus scan from Trend Micro (Housecalls) and used Spybot S&D and Ad-aware SE to clean up what I could. After all that, I ran another online scan using Panda Active Scan and the results of that scan showed that she still had spyware and a number of Trojans which Housecalls was not detecting. I recommend that she back up all critical files and run the HP recovery program which was located on it's own partition on her HDD. It seems that she must have encountered some sort of a problem with the recovery because Windows now reports that she has less than 100MB of HDD space available on an 80 gig HDD.

She really doesn't want to go through the process of running the recovery again. Is there a way of correcting this by other means? Before she ran the System Recovery, she had approximately 41 gigs free on the HDD. From what she is telling me, it sounds like Windows created a complete system backup that was not deleted once System Recovery was completed.

What do you think.

A:Low HDD space after running HP system recovery on Compaq Presario S5140WM Desktop PC

I would run the recovery again, and pay special attention for option to format the drive before installing windows.

HP (I believe) calls it a destructive install - as it wipes the partition removing all data from it.

Hi All

I realise this is possibly not the right room for this, but here goes.

Compaq presario V5000 laptop started giving consistant BSOD on start up, no boot (even safemode possible)

*** STOP 0x000000c2 (0x00000043, 0xDFFE8000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Ran linux did memory and hard drive check, seems ok. Have got all my data off and trying to recover the computer to a working state, but turns out the Compaq recovery DVDs i made invoke windows XP, this of course brings on the blue screen of im at the end of my tether.

Any suggestions, as I havn't got a scratch startable version of windows (as they don't give away them anymore.)

Thanks in advance.

I would suggest contacting HP for the discs.

The following is a link to their website, specifically the recovery discs.

For some computer models, the link to order recovery discs is not available on the product page. For those models, you can order HP recovery discs by clicking the Contact HP link at the top-left of this web page and HP Customer Care will assist you. You must have your product number and serial number to order.Click to expand...
Otherwise for help with removing the viruses and such, I would suggest that you request a moderator to move this thread to the Malware removal section.

My Dad's computer wouldn't boot the other day and I used the recovery process that comes with the machine. It said that the data would be preserved via the process but some programs would need to be reinstalled. After running thru the process (it uses a partition on D:, if that helps at all) it removed all the data. I contacted HP and chatted online with a tech and they said it wipes out My Documents! Why the process said it preserved data is a bit of a mystery. The techs had me download a deleted files recovery program and it found 6700+ files, none that looked likes Dad's data. I don't think the data was deleted.

I believe the data is still on the hard drive... here is why-
While it was going thru the recovery process it said it was backing up files.
The hard drive space still shows 24 of 30 GB used. I think that's about what was there before the crash!
The process removes the user profiles and the "Dad-Mom" profile is where the data was stored.
It recovered some photos in the shared documents folder which makes user profiles more curious.
I appreciate the help. I should have been more careful about running this program, but I trusted the "no data loss statement." Live and learn.

I have a Compaq Presario SR1930NX, it previously belonged to my brother and when I recieved it it was a virus addled mess. Luckily, or so I thought, it had a recovery partition. The problem was I did not know how to use it.

In my searches I found this forum, and specifically this thread,

Armed with this knowledge I went back to my computer and started it up. I tried both F10 and F11, I can't remember which but one did nothing and the other sent me to the standard BIOS menu that I could reach by hitting Esc. Is there some kind of BIOS update I need to run to fix this? Or am I just hosed and have to shell out money to try and get a recovery disc?

A:compaq presario sr1930nx recovery

Compaq says to press the F10 key repeatedly immediately following the POST flash screen.

Just after the first screen appears (the logo screen), press the F10 key repeatedly until a recovery menu appears.Click to expand...

Try that. If it fails, try several more times in case timing is critical. Tapping the F10 key at a fairly fast rate usually works.

Have a friend with a really screwed up hard drive; need to reformat C: and do a clean Win XP reinstall. Am not familiar with the way HP sets up their computers with C: and D: partitions, the D: partition being the "recovery" partition. I first thought I could use that to restore the HD to what was there when the computer was purchased in 2005, but it appears that the only items in the recovery partition are the original application programs and drivers -- no Windows OS.

So, my first question is, have I missed/am not seeing that Windows IS on the recovery partition and that running the recovery program will wipe C: clean and reinstall everything INCLUDING Windows XP. . . or will it just reinstall the original applications and drivers, but leave everything else as is?

2nd question: If the recovery partition does not include Windows, will I encounter any problems if I reformat C: to wipe it clean and reinstall XP from a genuine MS Win XP CD, then use the recovery partition to reinstall the original applications and drivers?

3rd question: The original OS was actually Windows Media Center, but this person uses her computer only for e-mail and the Internet, so I see no reason to put WMC back on; Win XP Home should be all she needs. Is that a valid conclusion, or is the hardware set up to expect WMC XP instead of plain ol' XP Home and we will have problems if we install the latter and then load the drivers from the recovery partition?

The best solution to this is to contact Compaq/HP and order new recovery disk set for this model computer they will arrive in the mail and cost less than you can imagine.

I have a Compaq Presario V6000 notebook. It's recently become cluttered and has slowed down. Instead of spending days clearing out unwanted programs, I'm wanting to format the C drive. There's a recovery partition on my notebook, and the Windows XP Media Center product key sticker is located on the bottom of the notebook.

I'm sorry if this is asked anywhere; I just want to be absolutely sure that Windows XP will be reinstalled when I reformat. I've reformatted an old desktop before, and to my horror Windows XP did not reinstall itself.

Due to being raped by viruses, I went out and bought a new computer. I used my old virus-ridden hard drive in the new computer and cleaned it up with norton anti-virus. I was using it as a back-up drive, but then decided I would like to put it into my old computer and sell it.

So I popped in the recovery disc, selected "full system recovery". Some sort of error happened, so I rebooted, and it said "No OS detected, press 'r' for full system recovery"

So I did, then I keep getting a blue screen saying "Check for viruses. Check HD for proper configuration, Run CHKDSK/F, scan for HD corruption,
Tech info: STOP 0x0000007B (0xF7948640 0xC0000034 0x00000000 0x00000000"

The compaq support page for that model doesn't show any recovery/restore disks but if you google SR1563CL "recovery disk" you'll get a few hits. HP no longer has any Windows 7 based recovery disks for consumer laptops. There is a 3rd party market for recovery disks. That is not precisely your model but is AMD so the motherboard is the same as yours and would work. If you are a little more adventurous and tight-fisted, we can walk you through a "clean" recovery using an OEM Windows 7 install disk and the drivers found on this site.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

A:Compaq Presario...F10 Recovery Not Working and No Disks

Hello ladyrazzor, welcome to Bleeping Computer.

Try this instead:
Go to your Start menu.
Under Programs or All Programs, look for PC Help and Tools. (or something similar)
Under Help and Tools, if you see it, click on Compaq System Recovery.
You will be asked if you really want to start system recovery, click Yes.

If asked to reboot, do so.
I've never used this method to do a recovery on my Compaq-the only thing I know is the option is there under the Start Menu.

If that doesn't work, you can try something else. Also in Help and Tools, you may see an option to make recovery disks.
You'll need a bunch of blank cd's to do this, then you can use them to do your recovery.

Good luck, let us know what happens.

You will not be able to download one, as it has Windows on it and will be by CD only.

Are you sure that yor PC does not have a hidden partition on the hard drive with the recovery files already on it?

Most recent models do, and there is usually a program or keystroke combination to invoke the restoration.

Does anybody know is this particular computer comes with a recovery partition? I have a friend who has a Compaq Presario SR5210NX, she is computer illiterate and she lives quite a way away. I told her I could come try to reinstall Windows, however I do not have a Vista disc, and she says she does not have the disc that came with it (either that or it did not come with a disc). I had enough trouble getting her to read the computer and find out what model/OS it was (she knows absolutely nothing abt computers). I just am trying to find out if it has a recovery partition that I could use to reinstall Windows Vista. I would hate to drive all the way out there to realize I have no way of reinstalling her OS. Does anybody know? If anyone could answer soon that would be great b/c I was hoping to go out there tonight if I would be able to do it.

Also, I actually have never reinstalled an OS with a recovery partition before, I've always used a windows install disc. I assume it is pretty straightforward and the same thing using recovery partition as a disc? Let me know, thanks...

When I originally got it from a friend a few years back,it had a bogus XP Pro OS on it so another friend gave a valid copy & I put it on & all went great till about 15 months ago when it mysteriously crashed. I suspect an angry (mentally ill) neighbor possibly used a flashdrive because when I rebooted it, it didn't.
I don't remember what it said on the screen but I did use the CD my other friend gave me to try to re install the OS & even after reformatted the harddrive,it said it couldn't proceed.
Well, I knew I had a recovery CD package but couldn't find it till tonight. On the triple CD set,it says ;
"HP Pavilion recovery. Below that,it says These CD's contain a backup copy of all software originally installed and can ONLY be used with an HP Pavilion PC".
So, my question is do you think it'll work or not? TIA

Now when i read this (And i checked out a few other sites too):

It says that the max RAM that this laptop can handle is 512MB per slot (which is what i have right now).

Does this mean i can't upgrade to 1GB per slot in order to have 2GB on this laptop?? If so was the software wrong?

I acquired this desktop about 2 weeks ago. It's 3 - 4 years old and came with Windows 98SE originally installed, but the owner upgraded it to Windows XP SP1 several months ago. The file system was left in FAT32 format and was not converted to NTFS format.

The Western Digital Caviar WDC100AA hard drive is rated at 10 GB, but shows the following in My Computer:

HARD( C: ) - 7.35 GB

SYSTEM_SAV( D: ) - 1.94 GB

Other than the files in the Recycle Bin and in System Restore containing the same information in both partitions, everything else appears to be Compaq-related files that are years old.

What would be the best way to consolidate all 9.29 GB into the C: partition and do away with the D: partition, and what would be the best program to use?

Don't tell me to reformat the hard drive and start from scratch because that's not what I want to do.

I have a Presario 2700 laptop that's no longer functional because the fan apparently has "detached" from the system board, causing the processor to overheat and shut down immediately upon reboot. This is according to the CompUSA technician. According to her, the screw grommets (holes?) have detached or broken, so the screws won't hold the fan in place. She says a new system board would be required, which costs $750. Obviously, this is not worthwhile, but it seems to me that there must be a cheaper way to hold that fan onto the system board (again, this is all assuming what she's telling me is correct...I have no way of knowing as I've never worked on a laptop). My question is: Is there any kind of epoxy resin or other heat-resistant adhesive that could hold that sucker in place enough to function? The CompUSA technician is willing to give it a try, but all she has is Krazy Glue which is no good with heat; I would have to get her the adhesive and she would attempt the hack. I'm willing to give it a try as the machine is now a boat anchor anyway. This is somewhat new territory for me so any guidance would be appreciated...thanks!

Do you have it open? If so, is there a heatsink under the fan, or does the fan just sit on the CPU itself? If there's a heatsink, then you can just glue it to that, if it's a fan on the CPU, then yea, some kind of adhesive would work well enough, but I would hope that there's a heatsink on it...

Okay, here is my problem. I have an hp presario desktop. Last night we had very high winds and the power kept on going on and off. When trying to use my desktop this morning a page comes up asking me how I would like to start my computer:
safe mode, safe mode with networking, start windows normally, etc. I have tried each of them, let the computer try to reboot and my computer keeps restarting itself. It will get to the compaq screen and then restart. I does the same with safe mode, etc. I don't know what to do. I thought it might be overheating so I let it sit overnight turned off. This morning I tried to start it again and it keeps restarting itself.

Please help me! I don't know what else to do. I can't even get to the windows screen where all of my files are..I just want my computer to work again! Thanks in advance for your help and expertise!

A:My Compaq Presario keeps restarting over and over and over! XP operating system! HELP!

You may have a corrupted windows file(s), and that is preventing your system from booting up normally. The power issues could have damaged something within your computer such as the hard drive to the point where it only partially works. Are these files important, and do you have another computer you can put this drive in as slave and backup the data off of it, prior to performing a system restore?

Hello All, I am a newbie here and I would like to say thank you in advance to all you great people who provide such terrific support!

I have a Compaq Presario Media Center SR1834NX Desktop PC running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Ver. 5.1.2715.3011 (xpsp(wmbla).061009-1511 Update Rollup 2.

I am suddenly missing items in the start menu, ie., accessories is missing entries such as under system tools it's blank and many other start up items. Also I am missing some control panel items. What I think has happened is the operating system has had some files erased or corrupted. There are just so many things missing that used to be listed makes me believe that is whats wrong.

How can I restore the original operating system or repair it without losing all of my current data and programs?

No cd's were shipped with my computer but there was directions for making a compaq cd/dvd recovery set
I made dvd recovery disks when the computer was new and I believe there are also recovery files on the secret partition, but I do not want to do a full restore with formatting the drive etc. I just want to repair the operating system if possible.

I tried doing several system restore points, but it does not replace what is missing.
Help Please

Well, the title pretty much says it all. I own a compaq presario 2700T laptop (aka "my beloved p.o.s."), but the good news is i have windows xp and a DSL connection. It has a USB port but is it too old/too crappy to support a webcam system? My price range for said desired webcam is less than $30, so no fancy technology here. Any advice would be much appreciated!

A:Will a compaq presario 2700T support a webcam system?

Webcams in generally do not take up a lot of resources. plus they are also fairly chep. You can get one in your price range without a problem, it may just not have a microphone and oh cours the more you spend the more features youu get. Jut look around, check or any place locally by you, or any other site you want to. Maybe stay with more brandname becuse i am not sure about other companes for webcams. And don't worry about your computer. I had a webcam on a desktop that brely meet the requirements for XP

Compaq Presario 2210us laptop.
XP Home.

Computer came into shop wasn't keeping correct system time. I figured it was a dead BIOS battery. I took the laptop apart and replaced the battery. Should solve the problem right? Wrong. It keeps the correct time when it is on and booted into windows. If I turn off or restart the machine when it is on AC power it will keep the time thru a reboot or being turned off overnight. The problem is when I either reboot or turn the machine off without being plugged into AC power it looses the correct time. Most of the time it will have the time it was shut off or rebooted as the time.

I tried to repair the W32 time and also tried a third party sync software to sync with a time server. This works, but only if connected to the internet. I'm totally out of ideas and really need some help!

Thanks all!

Greetings --

I am trying to upgrade a Compaq Presario V6000 laptop from 32-bit XP Pro SP3 to 64-bit Windows 8 Pro. This machine has an AMD Turion 64-bit CPU, ample RAM and HDD capacity. I am installing from the System Builder DVD.

Unfortunately the install is failing. After grinding away on the DVD for a very long time, finally I get the following message in a Windows 8-looking graphic:

"There was a problem with a device connected to your PC

"An unexpected I/O error has occurred.

"Error code: 0xc00000e9

"This problem can happen when a removable storage device is removed while it's in use or is failing. Properly connecting any removable storage and restarting your PC may fix this problem.

"Press Enter to try again

"Press F8 for Startup Settings"

There are no removable storage devices connected to the laptop. Neither of the 2 suggestions works, they just result in more grinding in the DVD drive and a return to the same error screen.

I just got through doing a successful install on a Presario V6700, which was also running 32-bit XP Pro SP3 previously. As far as I can tell the main difference between the two machines is that the good one has an Intel CPU and the problem one has an AMD Turion64 CPU. Both CPU's are 64-bit.

Letting XP complete boot-up and running the install DVD from Windows is not an option, since I'm trying to migrate from 32-bit to 64-bit and the OS won't allow it.

The BIOS allows booting from a USB ... Read more

I am attempting to restore Windows XP Media Center Edition on a Compaq Presario SR1750NX Desktop PC using the System Restore option activated by pressing F10. Upon pressing F10, the system appears to load the PC Restore files but when it tries to execute them, it generates the following error:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of
0xc0000034 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.

No CD's are available as the machine shipped with the System Restore feature on a protected partition.
I would prefer a "restore" solution, as opposed to other reinstall options, in order to maintain use of additional software (such as Windows Office) that came preinstalled on the machine.

Any suggestions on how I might clear the issue generating the error message so I can proceed with the system restore?
Any suggestions on how I might otherwise approach the problem?

Thanks in advance as any and all assistance is much appreciated.

A:Compaq Presario generates Fatal System Error when attempting PC Restore

If you decide you need the 2-CD system recovery disc kit for that Compaq Presario SR1750NX (EL445AA) desktop, you can purchase it from Computer Surgeons HP Recovery Center for $27.00 plus shipping.

That desktop was manufactured in November 2005, so HP will no longer have it available for purchase.

The kit will allow it to be reverted back to its original factory condition - complete with all the software and "bloatware" that came in it.

If the hard drive dies and needs to be replaced, the kit is going to be needed anyway to get that desktop going again.

O.K. When visiting my little sister this last Christmas, I attempted to upgrade her computer from 98 to XP proffesional, everything went smooth for a couple of days, till the computer contracted the Blaster worm, a few hours before I was suppsed to fly home, and all my work got scrapped. Since then, she has maxed the ram to 512 mb, and bought a new hard drive, western digital 120gb that she would like to use. As we are in different parts of the country, I am guiding her through all setup instructions over the phone...
We got the hard drive installed, and the new ram, and powered up the pc. It detected the ram, and moved to a screen that said operating system not detected. Here, I instructed her to insert the XP proffesional disk into the drive and reboot the computer. Then we get a screen that says the following, I am typing what she is telling me, not what I am looking at:

INF file TXT7 Setup.FIF is corrupt or missing
Status 40847
Setup cannot continue

I tried to boot using the XP boot disks 3.5 inch, but for some reason, her 3.5 inch drive is no longer recognized by the computer. We entered the bios, and it only references the cd-rom, and the hard drive in the boot sequence.

What can I do here? What has been done wrong? Any advice is appreciated since I pretty much killed my sisters computer this summer, when I attempted the upgrade and got the virus. Thanks in advance.

A:New hard drive, compaq presario 7470, can't install operating system?

If i understand this one right . the floppy disk is inside the computer but not recoqnized ? If that is the case, you'll need to recheck the connections (IDE and power ). It's very possible that you knocked one of them out in the process of installing the new HDD.
Now when it comes to the setup of windows XP , does the setup routine offers to "format " the hdd. It should since it's a brand new virgin hdd. At that point you need to let windows XP format the drive ( as in don't skip this step)
On the other hand if you haven't got that far into the setup routine, then you'll need to make the floppy drive functional first then use the WD floppy disk ( which should have came with the drive , if the drives was "retail bought") to check and see if there are any problems and also will help in setting up the XP

I get:

Error! Cannot Copy File:
C:\Preload\Data7_02.inp from Disk
Please eject and clean disk and try again.

If I "Ignore" this error it then errs on C:\Preload\Data_03.inp, then _05.inp, etc.

This is from a new set of System Recovery disks purchased from HP/Compaq. After the error I called and they immediately sent out another set of 10 CDs. They new set gives the exact same error.

I have swapped out CD Drives and all cables. I put a spare Hard drive in the unit with Win 98 ME on it and the system comes up. I ran Thorough Scandisk on the original hard drive set up as a slave with no errors. I pulled the first error file (C:\Preload\Data7_02.inp) from CD manually and was able to paste it to the slave hard drive.

System is a Compaq Presario SR1820NX and software is XP Home edition Service Pack 2.

Any hints on how to get XP loaded back on would be appreciated.

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)

If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.

However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.

I've got a Compaq 5430US running WinXP. I'd like to do a full system recovery but I don't have a recovery CD (not sure if it even came with one) and they are not available for purchase. However, I can see that the D:SYSTEM_SAV partition is intact and has 3 GB of stuff on it and I'm wondering if I can access it somehow without the CD? There are 3 folders, CPQDRV, DATA, and CPQS. The last one looks hopeful - it has several executable files. I tried one promising looking one and it said "Welcome to Compaq Direct QuickRestore Recovery Diskette Creator" and asked me to put a floppy into A:, but then I got a nasty error message about "an application has attempted to directly access the hard disk". Can anyone tell me how else I might attempt a recovery? I tried f10 at startup but I didn't get any kind of recovery menu.

Hello all, I'm not exactly a novce at computer, I actually consider myself pretty knowledgable about them. But I could use some advice. My computer has been acting up for some time and I ave finally found an Anti-virus that has piked up a Trojan on my computer, it had somehow hid from the antivirus that had already had installed. I have since Installed yet another AV because my computer started acting wierd again but the old one wasn't picking anything up, it to found something and removed it. My computer worked fine for a bit, but is once again starting to act up. I'm tired of this problem and am wishing for a way to wipe my computer clean of all files that have been added to my computer besides what came factory installed. I found the program Compaq System Restore on my computer and am considering using it. If anyone has used this program or is knowledgable about it i would greatly appriciate the advice. Simalarly if you know of a program or other helpful tips, they would also be greatly appriciated.

I am having an issue with a friends computer that I am currently working on. She ran the Compaq System Recovery that came with her PC. During the recovery she said it told her that her files would be safe and would not get removed. I searched up and down the computer and could not find any of her important documents and photos... the weird thing is that her computer is showing the hard drive is 160GB but it is still using up 42GB of that. I changed the folder options to view all hidden files and folders and system files, I calculated how much hard drive space all visible files and folders were taking up and it just didn't add up. I did notice that there was one folder in the C:\ drive that would not open... "Access Denied" and there was another partition (D:\) that was for the system recovery but would not let me view anything inside that partition. I will have to post the name of that "access denied" folder later bc I'm not in front of that PC at this time. Any ideas to where Compaq System Recovery might store those files? Or any other suggestions?

I attempted to order an XP home edition recovery disk from HP and when I received it I get an error message "This recovery XP disk is not for your model PC". I called HP and they stated they do not have a recovery disk for this model anymore . I asked what should I do and she told me to buy an new PC. I think that choice is unaceptable!
Anyway I asked for a refund and they said they would do that.

Never the less I am still having issue. I will explain below.

Compaq 5321SR running XP home edition.

I have ran virus software, spy software, disk defrag, HijackThis, ccleaner, attempted system restore which is not possible. I have 1.60 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4, 1024 RAM.

Issues I am having are; I can not run system restore as stated before, I can not run msconfig (can't fine file), IE will not display links correctly (cookie issue) I uninstalled IE7 and attempted to run IE6 but still it does not operate correctly, no admin account, can not launch WMP (windows media player) unless I type mplayer2 in the run window, I can not turn on the windows firewall. I attempt turning on the firewall but then it prompts me to go to firewall setting but it has both on/off options grayed out.

I am sure I am missing some fles or they got corupt somehow.

I am now at a loss as to what to do.

If anyone would like to offer some assistance it would be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone. Recently, I have been working on my mother's computer and I decided to run the built in System Recovery that is prompted at start-up and in windows as well. When I attempted to run the system recovery, I ran right into a brick wall. When I pressed F10 at startup, I was lead to the loading screen for System Recovery, immediately following another loading screen with the Compaq logo. Immediately, I am lead to a blue screen with the following error.

STOP:c000021a Fatal System Error
The Windows Logon Process System
Process terminated unexpectedly with
a status of 0xc0000034 (0x00000000 0x00000000)

I know this has something to do with the system files because I have gone over other forums that discuss problems and repairs with a similar issue. However, most of their issues caused them to have no access to windows at all. In fact, I can easily access windows and use the programs installed on her computer. There's only a few startup programs that fail such as svchost.exe .. I hope that, because of the special case that I still have access to windows that someone may be able to help me bypass this issue. I will very much appreciate any suggestions you all may have.

I am having a huge problem regarding restoring my Compaq Presario PC using Windows XP.

I recently attempted to do a total clean reinstall and recovery using the recovery disks supplied with my PC.

However, whenever I insert the first disk, it froze nearly halfway through the partition setup and gave me the warning "I/O error or CD-ROM read error; Press any key to continue."

When I attempt to continue, it reboots to a black screen indicating "No disk drive set or partition corrupted; press "R" to begin system recovery." When I do, it starts the partition setup....and then freezes as before.

I was able to purchase what I thought were some recovery disks that fit my PC, but when I attempted to load the first disk, I got a "I/O disk error" message.

Is there anything I can do to at least set the partition so that the new disk set I purchased can work?? Is there a boot CD disk I can use to reset the partition? Or....will I have to simply buy a new hard drive or a new CPU??

Any assistance you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I am at my wit's end.

Hey everyone.

I'm stuck in a real pickle here. Recently, my computer had been running rather different than normal, and I felt that something disastrous was going to happen soon, but I took the stupid route of simply doing nothing and excusing my hunch as nothing more than the computer being old.

Well, yesterday, Pompeii 2 decided to take place on my computer. My "hunch" was very correct, as yesterday, multiple trojan downloaders showed their ugly faces, and placed nearly every virus known to man on my desktop. I then proceeded to but windows in safe mode, unplug the ethernet cable, and run Trojan Remover with the latest updates.

Well Trojan Remover did quite a little number on my comp, disabled svchost's from running, and made it impossible for me to connect to the internet. After rebooting again, Windows was unable to boot and a box popped up stating that lsass.exe could not be found. I then booted into Compaq System Recovery and performed a "Safe" recovery that doesn't delete data but restores everything else.

After the system restored and I had to go through the windows setup process. When I was done and on the "Thank You" screen, after clicking the "Finish" button, the comp stayed on that screen for about 45 minutes, then instead of booting windows, the computer restarted itself.

Where I'm at now is, after the comp restarted, it's now on the Windows booting screen with "Please wait......" di... Read more

A:*HELP* Windows Won't Load After Using Compaq System Recovery

Ouch! The "Safe" recovery as I see it won't remove any malware.
The first thing you have to do is get you data off. You have a number of ways to go about this.
One is to pull the hard drive and attach or slave it into another computer and copy your data off that way.
Another is with a boot CD that allows you to access your hard drive from outside of Windows. There are a few options:
Both of these require you be able to "build" the CD's on another computer, which you have obviously, and access to an XP CD or at least, an i386 folder.
Ultimate Boot CD for Windows
The instructions are on the website. You boot the computer with this CD and then copy your data to CD's or a USB drive.

Same sort of a deal.

Another is with a Linux "Live" CD, but we will leave that for now.

You may end up having to re-install Windows, which might be faster and easier that fighting this issue.

Umm yea I am normally decent with pcs but recently after I let my friend use it for the weekend there are things wrong such as. Speed Slowed, Some AV software saying 146 infections. I dont know how to explain the problem.

When I first got the pc from my Uncle I used the Recovery partition in the f10 system recovery.

But When I go to use it now it just ignores my pressing. Im kinda getting pissed since no recovery CDs. It is Windows XP Home Edition says on sticker. Is it possible to boot the D:\ drive (The recovery partition) with command prompt. Or am I screwed since it just ignores me pressing f10.

Also if you tell me to restart my pc anymore to try setup and such...It takes like 5-10 mins to load my pc up now. It used to be fine and speedy.

Thx For Any Help

I don't really know which forum to place this thread; but, this seems as good as any.

I have a Compaq Presario S5300NX (Pentium 4 with Windows XP Home) here with a C and D partition. The D drive contains the System Restore files, the ones when you press F10 during the POST you can restore the system to its original factory state.

I could order a system restore set from Compaq for (+/-) $25; but, I would like to save that time and money. I want to change the hard disk and I want to know if there is any way to save these files onto DVD so that I can restore them to another hard disk.

I want a system restore that can be used later even in a case where the hard disk might fail. Being able to restore it from a DVD to the hard disk is what I want.

Can you see the recovery partition and the files on the partition within Windows. If so, you can probably use this tutorial to make a cd.

i m not sure ..i have Hp media center PC and for some reason i have lost everything from it ...and i formatted its hard drive ...i had 3 recovery dvd from this but unfortunately i cud load only one of them i tried another desktop's recovery dvd ..but i m not sure would it work in this PC too ...this one is from compaq ..if it works would it be genuine window XP again it possible for me to use it again if anytime there would be any trouble in my compaq desktop .....
thanks in advance

A:I have tried compaq system recovery on HP media center ?? would it work ???

Sorry for the late reply -- but no, a Recovery disk can only be used on the computer it shipped with. The license key is tied to the hardware (often to the motherboard's Bios).

That could be the source of the trouble in your other thread, if it is the Compaq's disk you are trying to install into the Hp Media Center PC.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

[P.S. on your HP, there should be a sticker with your model # & a sticker with your XP license # on it: for most Hp PCs, you can order replacement Recovery CDs for a modest fee (I think the going rate is around $30 USD). The Recovery Disk would come complete with the Windows XP operating system, and all the bundled software.]

i recently left my computer on whilst i went out, only to come back to find it totaly locked, couldn't do anything with it! i had to unplug the mains and hold down the power button for ages before it turned off. tried to reboot, and it gets as far as 'windows error recovery' screen. i have treid to boot in safe mode and normaly but, nothing. there is no 'last known good config' option?!
i get to 'system recovery options' but, there are no OS listed, i know you can then bypass this by clicking next but i don't know what to look for after that stage? i don't have any instalation/driver discs, as everything was already installed when we got the comp from HP.
i've been into the bios and ran the checks on there...

installed memory test passed!
startup check 'failed - replace hard disk 1'
HDD check where it says 'test 1 - quick test' read failure!

i have left my laptop trying to do a startup repair, and it's been going for than 7 hours now...'attempting repairs'!
up until the problem occured the CPU fan was getting pretty noisy, and had been for a few months, although now it is silent! could this have anything to do with it?

i don't know a great deal about comps, or there software so would really appreciate some help........

I hope you can help. I had problems with my laptop and decided to do a restore-but inadvertently did a recovery instead ! Now I am back to all factory settings.
I was able, however to find my files, pictures and most of all my original user folder under documents and settings.
But what I can't figure out is how to copy everything to my "current sign on" that was created as a result of the recovery.
As a result of all of this my laptop is way behind in microsoft updates,,anti virus etc...
And my biggest problem is that I have a wireless connection thru router. The wireless connection is still there showing my secured connection- however it does not recognize my current IP address - in which I am receiving an error when trying to connect via wireless- "Limited or no connectivity- Invalid IP Address (which is so I think I need to create a new one? I am reluctant to reset my router since I've done this in the past and it has created so many headaches that I have to pay Linksys to help me reset and do firmware updates etc and ultimately recreate a new wireless connection. So I need any help I can get!!

A:System recovery instead of restore now my hp compaq laptop is back to factory setting

All your programs and updates will need to be reinstalled just like you bought a new machine. Your personal files, if you found them, can just be moved to whatever folders you want to put them in. All your favorites are gone unless they were backed up. You will need to reinstall the drivers for hardware such as your printer, just like when you first got it.

For the connectivity problem, check Device Manager and see if any devices have problems or need drivers.

I have purchased a Compaq Presario 600 with an Athlon XP 2200+ processor. I do not have a copy of Windows XP to wipe it with. Is there any way with the installed XP that I can refresh this system and remove data frome previous owners? Or Can I load Win 98?

A:Compaq Presario 600 ??

Compaqs usually have a hidden partition with all the factory loaded software on it in an image format. As long as it does and you can figure out how to access it you could probable do that - but you almost likely need the XP Product key and may need to reactivate XP after the recovery. XP can only be install on one machine at a time - so if they are still using it you are out of luck.

Watch the boot up for any recovery messages or take a trip to and look up the info for your make/model.

ok I hace a compaq that is all messed up. lets see one day the monitor would not work after a storm. Bought another, For a while the screen would be blue but change back to normal. The pc also would have a hard time starting up after it was in idle. We would do a hard start and for a while that worked. Now when I try to start it it turns on but the monitor says no vga/dvi input. There is also none of the preverable beeps that are supposed to be there so in short (well long)the motherboard is fried? So do I use it as a planter in the yard or is there a way to get it up and running. It runs on XP media center it has a micro ATX form factor motherboard it is also an AMD 64 Anthlon. ram is 256 mb 1Rx16 pc 4200 ddr2 533 mhz. With all that said can I just replace the motherboard and reinstall the reinstallation disks and be up and running? I friend of mine purchased this Presario in 2004. She hasn't had internet since about 2006, so she hasn't had any of the updates since then. I brought her tower home with me since I have internet to load her updates. We're trying to get it internet ready. When I brought it home last week nothing would open. So yesterday she gave me the system recovery disc. I started with the Standard Recovery, but there were too many files that it couldn't recover. So I then decided to do a full recovery. After the full recovery it was rebooting and it told me that not all the system could reload and I couldn't hit okaybecause it wouldn't read / acknowledge my mouse. So, I unhooked her computer and rehooked mine to see what her alternatives were. I found a website, they wanted to know all the things it wouldn't oload. All I can remember is that it was things that could me downloaded later like: Norton, AOL, Adobe, MSN, and QuickTime.

So, I unhoked mine and rehooked her's up (and booted up my laptop). When her's came back up it's saying: NTLDR is missing Pres Control + Alt +Delete to Restart

My question for you is there anyway I can save her conputer? She doesn't have a lot of funds, being a singe mother of a 7 yr old and I'm just a good friend trying to help her out.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide

I am upgrading a Compaq Presario 5000 model #5WB220 with a very low 15 GB hard drive for a friend. It currently has Windows ME and there is no Compaq Restore CD.

I have increased the memory to 320 by adding an additional 256 MB RAM.

I am wanting to totally replace the 15GB hard drive with an 80 GB hard drive and load Windows XP Home.

The problem I am finding out is that Compaq has propriertory info on a partition within the existing drive. From what I understand without the Restore CD, I can't put the new drive in.

I'm wondering if there are any other alternatives to doing this.

Can I install XP on the existing drive and then transfer all the data (to include the compaq proprietory info) to the new drive in a slave position?
