[SOLVED] no sound, list of install hardware under device manager blank, unable to read

Q: [SOLVED] no sound, list of install hardware under device manager blank, unable to read

Hi guys,
I hope I posted at the right section.
My xp has been giving me problem recently like the explorer.exe keep using 50 of my CPU resulting my laptop to hang a lot. I tweaked a bit with msconfig but not sure if that's the caused my laptop problem now.

The symptoms are:
- No sound
- Installed hardware not displayed in device manager (blank)
- Computer Description in the General Tab of System Prop. greyed and blank
- System restore only has one restore point which is when I encountered all this problem
- Unable to use internet
- Unable to connect to external disk, or usb drives
- The processes tab in Task Manager, no User Name listed, usually there my username or SYSTEM but now only SYSTEM for System Idle Process
- Under the Users tab of Task Manager, none listed. Usually there is my username listed
- Same symptoms even under safe mode

I'm currently using my housemate's laptop to check if there is a solution for this problem.

Thank You
-urta-

Hi, to start off, sorry if this question has been answered before, but after looking for quite some time I haven't come up with a solution to my problem.

I just recently got a new keyboard and mouse, but when trying to install their software to my computer, it couldn't detect them, despite them being functional. Someone proposed to me that it might have something to do with "device manager" not recognizing them, and when opening device manager, there are no entries at all.

So far, I have tried enabling plug and play (It was already on automatic when I found it), making sure all services were running in "System Config", and accessing registry editor> SYSTEM> CurrentControlSet> Enum, then entering the advanced settings and making an attempt to "Replace all child permissions with inheritable permissions from this object," but despite being administrator, when trying to edit anything, I am given the message "Unable to save permission changes on Enum. Access is denied" Also, there is a third group named "OWNER RIGHTS" included with "SYSTEM" and "Everyone." All of the fixes I have found do not include this third group, and I am unable to remove or edit it in any way.

I am currently running Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit if that is of any help.

Any help is greatly appreciated, and thanks very much in advance.

I uninstalled my wireless adapter due to a very minor problem (which I wish I had ignored).  Now when I try to reinstall I get a "Data is Invalid" error.  Also, the program claims it cannot see the hardware, but Windows definitely does see it.

I also noticed that my Device Manager now comes up blank.  It show absolutely no devices.

Please help.  I am using Windows Vista (32 bit).

Greetings all here,

Well, I have an unusual issue. When my PC goes into screen saver mode, and when I get past it from the switch user screen, there isn't any sound. When I go into Device Manager and select 'scan for hardware changes' the sound comes back.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Hey guys,

There are a few things that contributed to the leadup to me losing my Device Manager and sound. First, about 3 weeks ago, I bought 2 sticks of Mushkin EM3200 DDR RAM (two 1GB sticks; 2GB total). Installed it, and it disagreed with my board in a big way (apparently it was the voltages or timings). I managed to get as far as "Verifying DMI Pool Data..." before I got one of two error messages: "NTLDR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart." or "Windows failed to load because the System32 folder is corrupt or missing." In each case, I popped in my Windows XP disc and fixed the boot record from the recovery console (I did not restore the MBR), and it booted right in.

At the time, Windows booted up just fine, but lately I've been having some funky problems. I've got one SATA drive (partitioned into two) which is my boot drive and one IDE drive that I just use for storage. Sometimes, with my IDE drive plugged in on boot, I can't get Windows to load by any means. Sometimes it boots just fine. When it boots fine, and I go into "My Computer" (either via the Start Menu or the icon on the desktop) it takes about 20-30 seconds to actually display anything (I get either the flashlight-over-folder animation or it just doesn't load). With my IDE drive unplugged, I get no such issues.

As well, the first couple of times I restored the boot record, I had no issues with sound at all. Then suddenly Windows started saying ... Read more

Ever since I installed SP3 on my Dell Dimension 8400 my Device Manager has been blank. Although it seems like all my drivers are still installed, my PC no longer picks up my Printer, my Sound Card, or my iPod. I've tried to reinstall the printer drivers via USB, but my PC doesn't even recognize that it is attached. When I tried to add the printer again, I receive a print spooler is not running error. When I run the diagnostics on my Creative SoundBlaster Live! sound card, it recognizes the hardware but the drivers all fail (again I tried reinstalling the drivers to no avail). And lastly when I attach my iPod it no longer registers as a device or appears when I launch iTunes.

I tried to go through Microsoft's "Help" desk, but once a week attempts at Hotfixes have not yielded any results.

Any thoughts / guidance would really be appreciated at this point.

Hi there,

Although I'm not computer illiterate, for some reason I just cannot get to grips with my laptop at the moment, and since having my son I don't have the same time I had previously, to learn!

The first issue that I noticed, was when I turned on the laptop, an error message came up about MSE and how a file was missing and possibly the access was denied or something. I ignored it at first, but then I tried to install a few programs and nothing is installing fully.

To be a bit more specific, if all that is too vague... What I'm really trying to install at the moment is just the software for my new keyboard. When I attempt to install the software, it seems to complete. As soon as I click "finish" however, it comes up with the error message that I have attached as a screen grab.

If it helps point towards the problem, I just went to change my desktop picture (I figured you guys might end up seeing my desktop via screengrabs etc, so thought I'd change it to something cool... Right clicked on desktop, click "personalise".. nothing happened. Right click-Screenresolution - error message #2 and then #3, both of which I have also attached. I think I must be missing some important system files :(

I'd really appreciate it if there is a way to repair my system without formatting everything... I'm not able to back anything up where I am at the moment, and honestly, if the only way is to delete everything, I'll probably rather leave it broken... Read more

A:Unable to install software and device manager gone/not working. Please help!

exactly what laptop? what keyboard? normally you should not have to install any type of software for the keyboard. It should have worked when you plug it in.

someone else here may have a better solution but what I would do is to
1. do a system restore to a restore point just prior to all the problems.
2. make sure windows is completely uptodate by manually updating windows.
3. uninstall and reinstall msie.
4. plug in the keyboard and see if it will work without the software installation.
5. then try to personalized the background.

after the 2nd step, order does not matter.

I've got a computer here (running XP Pro) that device manager is showing up blank, when you click in the white space you get the little "disable" "uninstall" "Update Driver" etc buttons on the tool bar, but none of them do anything.
It has lost its network adapters also.. but thats not the major issue. Its just the device manager.

I've checked the machine for viruses, it doesnt appear to have any, it did have adware but I've removed that using anti spyware. I have reinstalled SP2, and scanned for corrupted files using SFC..

The only idea I've got left is to reload the system, but the owner isnt real keen on me doing that.

Any suggestions?

If none of the above options work, Run the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized) (Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

Ok so I had to reinstall windows XP because my OS would not load and I got all the drivers reinstalled, diagnostic ran smooth and everything came up working ok etc but my device manager won't recognize anything! The compy says my audio mixers are not there, my USB devices are not working, hardware wizard is not responding, microsoft updates are not working, Dell's driver downloads are calling out for something that isn't there and I really really need this fixed ASAP so I can get to my external HD. So I tried putting an apple sticker on my Dell in hopes it would accept its new identity and start not sucking, but alas this did not work. If you help me fix this I'll seriously be your new best friend... I have apple stickers. ;-)

Hi everyone,

I just bought a used Lenovo 3000 N200 (model 0769). When I met the seller he told me that he had lost the installation CD that normally comes with the computer, and that anyway, it was not usefull since he had downgraded from Vista to XP.

I didnt think it could be a problem, but now I'm overwhelmed with problems! I reformated the computer and installed my own personal version of Windows XP (SP2) and found out I couldnt have access to Internet!

I went to the "Device Manager" and found multiple devices marked with a yellow "?". Network controller was part of these missing drivers. So I went on Lenovo website and found a driver page http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-67855.html

That did solve my problem with Internet, now it works fine. But I have no audio device and about ten other yellow "?" that will probably soon become very problematic! Things like "Base system device" that I just cant find because there's no details about it!

I dont want any yellow question mark anymore! I want my computer to be 100% focntional!

Anyone can help, give suggestion, put me on a trail or tell me where to look?

Thanks a lot for taking the time to read th isnovel!!

Kim

sis processor to AGP controller in device manager in yellow eclaimation mark! internet wont open when i try update drive it says no new files found!! how i fix it its xp sp2

A:Device manager list error help please!

What is the brand and model of computer or motherboard.
It could be that your AGP video graphics card has either gone bad, or has lost the drivers.
A simple test is to cold boot to SAFE MODE. The default Microsoft VGA driver is used for display at 640 x 480 resolution and in 16 colors. You must log on in all modes by a domain or by the local Security Accounts Manager, depending on which Safe Boot mode you select., by pressing the <F8> key repeatedly once per second

1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.
2. Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
3. When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.

Then, if it works in low resolution, go back and try again using this option as a test:

? Enable VGA Mode: This option starts Windows in 640 x 480 mode by using the current video driver (not Vga.sys). This mode is useful if the display is configured for a setting that the monitor cannot display.

or try this option
? Enable Boot Logging: This option turns on logging when the computer is started with any of the Safe Boot options except Last Known Good Configuration. The Boot Logging text is recorded in the Ntbtlog.txt file in the %SystemRoot% fol... Read more

Hehe, I know already that this is all my own doing, so I'm determined to fix it too^^... I got this Evil Genius game by Vivendi Universal games, it has worked perfectly till now. I'm not experienced with computers so naturally I wanted to try something which sounded perfect, a virtual cd-tray. I used Daemon Tools Lite for this, after copying the two cds on the virtual tray and installing it it didn't let me use it to play without the cd, and even with the cd it wouldn't function. So I wanted to unistall it all and start from scratch. Daemon out of the way the game wouldn't unistall since the copy must've been imperfect. I searched for the solution here and noticed the "delete the files manually"-thread, and so I did... but now it won't recognize the install-cd of the two-cd-game, and I'm in a pinch, hehe... hopefully someone knows exactly or even something near the right answer to fix this somewhat embarrasing problem^^ Thank you!

My first post
I'm the computer-geek for our small school in Bangkok. We have 15 computers, and they all have pirated OS. My plan is to get a genuine version of Windows2000 for all the machines. In reformatting 2 of the computers already, and installing, they both come up with device manager problems for the
1. ethernet adapter
2. audio adapter
3. video adapter

I ran Everest, and it says i have a VIA P4M800 chipset, VIA VT6102 Rhine II fast ethernet adapter, VIA AC'97 enhanced audio controller, and a VIA S3/Unichrome video adapter.

The last few days i have been on other computers that could connect to the internet to download the drivers for these devices, and installed them on this problem computer - nothing changed. I have uninstalled devices, drivers, had the "Add hardware wizard" refind them etc., but nothing changes. This problem is the same on both of the 2 computers i reformatted and installed Windows 2000 pro on.

Any suggestions on what to do?

A:Can you move item in your device manager up or down the list?

They are listed in alphabetic order.
You can try to extract drivers (inf files) and edit names inside them. And later reinstall them.

But editing them, of course, will break drivers' signature, and you would have to go through the process of making unsigned drivers run on x64.

Windows7 64bit

Hi

In my Windows 7 (x64 bit)(all latest patches), when I open Device Manager, the entire list disappears and instantly reappears EVERY 2 SECONDS.
Strangely there is no sign any errors in the Devices that are being listend.

Also the sound card is also making a pong-pong sound - every 2 seconds. It sounds like two (low-ish) strings of a guitar being plucked... they are about 1 octave apart in pitch...

The pong-pong sounds are not QUITE in synch with the refreshing frequency of the Device Manager.

Any thoughts?
Do I have a virus? Or some weird conflict... ? or what?

Welcome

Run a thorough anti virus scan

Download and run malwebytes.

Check the sound card, may be defective, and Look for current drivers.

If there are no virus and the sound card is ok, use a sytem restore from before the problem. That should bring everything back to normal

A new install of Windows XP Home is giving us some issues. We suspect that the root cause may be an error in the listing of hardware devices:
Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager

Under Processor, the processor appears twice, and under System Devices, Motherboard Resources also appears twice.

I have attempted to remove ALL the duplicated items and reboot the computer, but when it comes back, the devices are still listed twice.

There is no yellow question mark beside the items in question, indicating that the OS seems to think everything is OK, and if I examine the properties, everything says it is working properly.

I know this is wrong, and I suspect this is causing other errors (mostly in games), so I would like to get this corrected. However, I don't have any ideas of what else I can try.

Appreciate any and all ideas....
TIA,
--
Darryl

They came on a CD, or if lost, you can find them on the manufacturer's website.

There are 20 or so printer listed in the unknown devices in device manager. I have never connected to these printers. I disabled all of them, but how do I delete them?

A:Device Manager has a list of Unknown printers

First try looking for them in control panel>programs and uninstall all that you find. Ensure none are connected to your computer. Then go into print management and double-click all printers, then RIGHT-click the printer you want to delete, and click delete:

I have an HP dv9208nr laptop which has worked perfectly for me until recently. A few days ago after closing the computer and opening it back up i noticed that the wireless wasn't working. Obviously i checked the switch and the switch was on but the LED was orange indicating that wireless connectivity was turned off. I tried restarting and no luck; after a few other simple fixes didn't work; i went to the device manager and noticed that the wireless card wasn't in the list as it should have been. I tried updating the drivers; nothing. HP techs sent me a link to a service manual and instructed me to reseat the card manually, reset the BIOS, and reinstall the drivers. It didn't work. the next day the computer had found the card as new hardware and installed it. it worked fine for a day; then the same thing happened again. Any ideas?

Hi,

I am having several problems with my PC, specially when handling with hw devices such USB ports and sometimes the network card.

I noticed Device Manager appears blank and at first I suspected it would be a hw / sw problem. I did some research to try fixing it and none of the suggestions worked... On the other hand, many recommendations mention it could be a spyware...

I have an updated AVG which I run often. I also use Ad-Aware and Spybot. But they are find nothing... I also went through the regular anti spyware steps and could not find anything...

Can anyone help with this?

Having some problems...my Device Manager is empty. The 'My Computer' window takes about a minute to come up...all I get is the little flashlight until it finally loads. Earlier tonight I had no internet connection and there was no device under 'Network Connections.' I tried the Apropos fix and it seems my internet is back up but there's still no visible device there. I tried the registry permission fix the ENUM but when I apply the 'Replace permission entries on all child objects' checkbox it says "Registry Editor could not set security in the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys." I also checked PCI and USB for corrupt entries under ENUM. Anyone have any suggestions? I think i've covered every potential fix available on the web...i've been browsing forums for like 5 hours now.

This all started when I put a new power supply in my PC tonight. I turned the PC on and got a blue screen error in Windows. When I rebooted it made me activate Windows again. (Resulting in a 40 minute phone call with Microsoft )

Highlighted the Enum entry, go to the top of the regedt32 menu bar, choose "Security",
and view the settings for key "Enum". You might notice that it is void of "allow"
checkmarks for the local members of the machine you are working on. Check "allow"
for each login account you want to allow access to the device manager, click apply
and re-run the device manager.

other one is activating the plug and play service...

is there any other options i can try?

Working on a friend's Laptop. Have no idea how this became infected. XP Pro SP3

Symptoms include Device Manager being Blank, Any attempt at bringing up IE or Firefox results in TONS of windows on that Browser opening up and all with the "can't reach the internet" type messages. Also, although it recognizes a USB Mouse, it will NOT recognize any USB Memory Key I try. Therefore the only way to get any type of Software installed is via a CD which I must create each time. Problem is that I can't WRITE to even a R/W CD because it won't let me, and therefore impossible to get logs off the PC. Happens even in Safe Mode.

AVG 2012 and MalwareBytes both previously installed and within about 10 days of being current. Both run full passes without coming up with a single error.

What I need are some programs that I can put on a CD and take to the infected PC that will ID this problem. Also be aware as I stated above that any logs created will have to be hand copied by me and then entered into this topic.

I know this will be a pain for myself and anyone who chooses to help me, so thank you in advance for your patience.

A:XP Pro Device Manager is blank

Solved my own problem. Searched for Device Manager Blank and found a website that had a method to fix that checked for PNP (Plug and Play) Service not working. Sure enough it was NOT working. Set to Auto and started it. Now Device Manager listed all devices, and magically also now it could Read my USB Key.

Then I tried to get on the internet but was again stopped. Found Network Connections was also completely blank. Did another search for that and came up with a MS Tip that asked me to again check Services and again found them disabled and had to set to Auto and Start. Now I had connections but couldn't get out from the LAN even on wireless.

Got to thinking some more about all these Services being disabled and so brought up msconfig. First page told the story. Startup Selection was set to Selective Startup and Use Original Boot.ini selected only. Changed to Normal Start up and rebooted. Everything now works normally.

Have no idea how it got in this situation, but proceeded to run Spybot which found a few things and then ran complete passes of AVG and MBAM but neither found anything. At least for the moment, it appears everything is fixed. So probably, I entered this occurrence in the wrong forum, although it DID smell like a Virus.

A:Blank Device Manager

Hi,

I am not sure if this particular fix with work, since what we find is that some fixes for this problem don't work in all situations. There are some other fixes, but what you have said leaves me to believe this might help your situation:

So how to fix this problem:

Go to START

RUN

type: "services.msc" (don't put the quotation marks in)

Hit Enter

Here is a list of all your services and some will be disabled as XP can do that on it's own at times.

Check the list for those services you want to Start

Highlight the area and Right Click on service and select START for those you want to be started. (you can also do the same with the highlight in the upper left hand corner of the window)

When that is done, you can also click PROPERTIES and alter it to either start manually or automatically (or disabled if you choose).

Go through it an enable all of them that you want to start (Feel free to skip any that you don't want to use)(Some people just enable all of them, but I don't recommend that) If you look at the upper left hand corner, it tells you what each does when you have highlighted the item.

SPECIAL NOTE: Pay special attention to Logical Disk Manager for the error you have said you have.

Let us know how it goes for you.

Hi - Not happy to have to be posting to this, but very glad you are here to help. My computer, running XP (SP1) could not start. Screen booted, then went black. Was able to start in Safe Mode and ran Adaware SE & Spy Sweeper and removed a bunch of items. Still unable to boot properly. Noticed, I could also boot in "Enable VGA" mode but the found 2 things: 1) if I tried to change the display properties the screen went blank and 2) nothing in my device manager. Researched online - found this to be most likely to do with "soap" - did download the "apropofix" and followed directions (in safe mode) still have problem. Added to the problem is even starting in Safe with Network - I now can't (although I could earlier) get online - so posting the logs may be more difficult. I have downloaded from another computer the programs suggested and are currently running them on the "bad" computer. Any help is most welcome.

Hello

I have a user who is based in Ireland whose XP computer is heading for a rebuild!

DETAILS:

Dell D600 Laptop Computer
XP Professional SP1
The computer is on a domain

He has an external Hard Disk which shows in Disk Manager but not in windows explorer

I checked Device Manager but when clicking on it from the computer management box, it was completely blank

I searched the MS Knowledge base and found an article suggesting I start the plug and play service. The service was already started.

TROUBLESHOOTING SO FAR:

1. Checked that all necessary services were running on the computer
2. Made sure the ENUM key under HKLM had the necessary permissions (found an article about that)
3. Checked event viewer, nothing bad found
4. Logged on to the computer under my profile. Same problem

Has anyone seen this problem before? More importantly, does anyone have a fix for me please?

I still need to try testing in Safe Mode.
I'm also thinking about sending the user an XP disk with instructions on how to run a repair. Do you think this is worth a go?

Any suggestions welcome

IF you are willing to do a full CLEAN OEM reinstall -which may solve your problem as well as get rid of any HP bloatware THEN go to the Tutorials and you will find Gregrocker's excellent article. You can download an ISO of your version of Windows 7 from Digital River and it will work with the Key on the bottom of your G6. You may want to get all of the drivers for this machine from HP's site first, btw.

Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

Doing this will wipe the hard drive and you can also create a simgle partition rather than keep the HP hidden one.

I do DSL and Dialup technical support for a local ISP. Over the past two days, my co-workers and I have been receiving calls from customers with an error of 797 for dialup. This is generally a modem failure error, but when we check the device manager it is completely BLANK. We disabled startup items through msconfig thinking it was just something running in the background causing an issue, but that didn't help. We also tried a system restore and it would not allow us to do that either.

Anyone experiencing this as well or have any suggestions as to what might be causing this??

A:Blank Device Manager w/ DUN error 797

Here'sthe advice I was given when I had this same problem.[it worked for me]

This behavior occurs if the Plug and Play service is turned off (disabled).
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, set the startup type for Plug and Play to Automatic. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
2. Double-click Plug and Play.

If you receive a Configuration Manager message, click OK.
3. In the Startup Type list, click Automatic, and then click OK.
4. Close Services.
5. Restart the computer.

Hope it works for you too.

Well, recently I found out that my graphics driver (SiS M760GX) needs some updates, so I went to download the drivers but at the installation it would give me an error saying that the system couldn't detect the device (my graphics card?) at the start.

Went to check out device manager to see if everything was alright, but unfortunately, it was empty/blank. I think that might be the problem for that error in the installation.

I went then, to find some solutions. Tried to edit the registry (according to a guide in Microsoft forums by Jason or whatever) by changing permissions in Enum but it gives me an error everytime I try to check "Replace permissions..." saying it couldn't set security in the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys. Also tried to see if Plug and Play in services.msc was set to Automatic, and it was.

I also find strange that when I connect a device (like a usb flash drive), it doesnt popup that a new hardrive has been connected and doesnt show that icon in the task bar which can be used to remove the hardware safely.

Any help with this? Would really appreciate.

Thanks in advance.

A:Device manager empty/blank

Backup your registry before attempting.

You have to gain permissions to change that item by right click on the left size column in the subfolder click permissions then edit the permissions so you have access to them. But this is risky backup your registry before changing anything also remember what you change by writing it down before changing it.

I went to the device manager to see if the printer was still there with an exclamation point and imagine my surprise when the screen is blank!! I made sure that the plug and play was acitivated in services.msc and started. Rebooted computer and the screen is still blank! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

Still trying to find out why the Ports, Coms, etc don't show anywhere in Device Manager.

I noticed an old Post where it said to look in add/Remove Hardware.
Where do I find this Add/Remove Hardware option, please ?

There was also a Post to check the BIOS for this and to see if PORTS is set to Auto.
How, please.

And, if anyone has any thoughts on how to have the Ports show up in Device Manager, would be appreciative. I am fairly certain that at one time they did.
Can't imagine what might have happened.

Thanks,

Devices and Printers is probably what you are looking for to add a device. My Device Manager shows "Ports (COM &LPT)" This is in Windows 7. I notice you have XP and don't remember where it is in XP. Posting in an XP forum would probably be better than this Windows 7 forum.

In device manager every hardware is shown correctly without a sign or error
that there is something missing.

But when i click on my laptop name and search for changed hardware. BAM i got a BSOD.

Here are the logs!

Thank you

A:BSOD searching for new hardware in Device Manager

All your BSODs were caused by nvlddmkm.sys which is a driver for your Video from Nvidia. I've noticed the driver date is 02/10/2013 which is pretty recent but I would suggest to re-install the Video driver.

My son deleted the Realtek HD Audio from the Hardware Manager (Category audio/video/games) and since then there's absolutely no audio. Upon start up (Windows XP Professional), there's no mentioning of new hardware, and manually starting up hardware detection doesn't find it either.

How can I get it to show up again? I've already tried to install the drivers but to no avail.
It's an onboard sound card, mb is an Asus M3N78-EM.
------------

EDIT: It finally detected it, but it doesn't work. It mentions that "The software for this device is now installed, but might not work correctly.

This device does not start (Code 10)"

Device manager shows a yellow ! sign.
Updating the drivers doesn't fix it, it only mentions that there's no better software available.

Hello
So as to not to blabbering on too much, here are the basics:
- Computer froze and shut down one day.
- Restarted, but ran 'CHKDSK' after the windows starting page stayed open for upwards of half an hour.
- When I tried to use Skype, Skype couldn't detect any audio, video, or microphone hardware. None at all.

- My antivirus file, avast, was corrupt and would not operate, even after attempting to uninstall/re-install the program.
- Downloaded AVG and ran a full scan, malware, spyware, etc. removed, but the Skype still can't detect anything.
- try to access device manager to update drivers.
- device manager is blank, and devices and printers (accessed through control panel) has the green progress bar for hours but never loads anything.
- Try various fixes suggested via Windows 7 support forums, including downloading drivers from the Dell Inspiron site, the 'sfc /scannow' in command prompt (ran as an administrator).
- sfc scan had errors, 'Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them'.

Hi there,
Thanks in advance for your time
I'm having the following problems:

1. On startup, I get a message along the lines of "Enumerate USB device fail!!!". I click OK and it appears 3 more times.
2. My device manager is empty
3. When I tried to update my AMD graphics driver using their autodetect program, it failed with error "Could not enumerate PNP devices. Is the Plug and Play service disabled?"

I have checked to ensure plug and play has a status of 'started'.
Sorry but I don't know what ARK.txt is. Please let me know if you need it and if so how to get it.

I do have access to an OEM System Builder pack, legitimate Windows 7 disc. Running 64 bit.

Thanks

A:Device manager goes blank after cable man goes in msconfig

Hello,

Hello try running a system restore back to a point before msconfig was used.

Maybe unchecked app from startup but should still be on system or disabled a

service that is needed at startup. The System Restore should revert the changes

back. However if the unchecked app is causing the slowdown then it will occur.

Here is a guide that you can use that may help you with the slowness.

I found out this really cool hack and there is a way to hack any of my drivers in my Device Manager. I would really like to try this out, but I have to make an Inf file in order to do this. But I am not sure at all on how to do this because this is complicated stuff. I also think that I have to go into my Registry editor and edit some changes there. Because I found this hack from this website. Here I will give you the link. it's here: The obsessions of an electronics freak: How To: Hack a driver to support your hardware. That is the link right there.

So I read this web page very well, but I couldn't understand on how to do this process at all! So can you please help me figure out on how to do this? Because I really want to see how cool this will work. Well anyway, check out that web page that I gave you, because it's a pretty interesting article, I must say. And also, don't forget to get back to me as soon as possible, when you can. Because I really would like to know much more about this important stuff. And I also would like to know on how to make an Inf file (Information system) file, that is. So I will be waiting for my response from you very soon as possible. So thank you very much now!

A:How do I hack a driver to support my hardware in my Device Manager?

First off, I would strongly suggest that you back up any files that you plan on editing. Perhaps create a system restore point as well.

I took a quick glance at the site you linked, and it looks like you just have to edit the .inf file in question. If that is the case, you can just edit it with Wordpad or Notepad.

Why don't you give the process a try and let us know how it works out. Feel free to post back with most specific questions.

ok this is a weird thing for me, never had to deal with this and dont know what to do.
The problem: I had a video capture card/ tv tuner installed in my pc. At the time i had windows xp pro sp2.
I formatted my pc and installed windows xp Media center edition.
when i tried to install my capture card it wouldnt work.
It read the plug n play, it installed the drivers but when i went to any program to capture video, it wouldnt read it.

So i thought my card had fried, as i did fine a small burn mark on the silver strip on the back of the card.
No problem, i ordered a brand new one.
Only to find im having the same issue, Its installed but when i go to windows movie maker, it says the hardware is in use already when it is not.
WinDVR that came with my card just shows TV fuzz.

the problem i think it is, Is that theres another card supposedly installed on the PC that isnt there.
Example:
in widows movie maker when i choose to capture video im givin the option between two cards.

Card 1: PCI TV TUNER PCI 2309 (This is my new card that i just installed)

card 2: BT878 VfW to WDM Mapper

now when choosing card one, It doesnt give any options in the drop down box for video source. and it says the hardware is in use after i click next a couple times.

When i click card 2 i get an instand error just by clicking it.

Hi
Its bit complicated.
I have 5 year old Compaq Pressario V3611AU notebook with AMD Atholon X2 TK-55 processor. Was using Windows XP and everything working fine. Recently I upgraded RAM to 2GB & processor was changed to AMD Turion(tm) X2 TL-60 2.00Ghz. I installed windows 7 and everything worked fine for a week with no issues.
Recently when switched on it showed red cross on volume device. When I checked in device manager the sound video & Game controller has disappeared.

I checked most of the site but unable to install the exact driver.

Even I tried to add with Legacy Drivers in Device Manager but failed to install the correct driver.Even I re installed my Windows 7 but same issue. When I click on Volume device to fix the issue end up with Hardware Changes has been effected.

Please help me whether it is an issue with Sound Card or with driver.

Alright, so here's the scoop. I recently formatted my computer into xp and updated it to sp3, but in the programs (aida64 among them) I was using to search for drivers it said that my sound device was outdated (Soundmax High Definition audio integrated device I think) and so I installed Soundmax's latest driver/ program. Yet that made the sound scratchy or added a fuzz to the sound that wasn't there before. I tried going back to a restore point but that didn't work so I disabled the device in Device Manager. Now the device doesn't even appear in the Manager, even after re installing the chipset and the program. Does this warrant a belarc report to be solved?
Any help would be much appreciated and thank you for your time.

Unfortunately the duke of flukes wasn't lucky this time.

In the Device Manager, there are yellow question marks near Other Devices and then below it, in sub categories is a list of at least 20 (!) Unknown Device on High Definition Audio Bus.

In the Audio Device section, there are NO Playback Devices, NO Recording Devices, No Midi Playback and the same in the Voice section. Usually I have Realtek listed there.

The laptop is my grandmothers and I'm trying to remove any malware and other nasties.
Originally the laptop wouldn't connect to the internet, though that seems to be fixed for now.  While trying to connect to my wireless network I noticed her internet connection included a proxy IP address which I know she didn't setup - she uses cable and is connected w/ an ethernet.  I've deleted the proxy and unchecked the option for proxy connection.

I've run malwarbytes a couple of times.  The first time it found a few threats which I quarantined.  No threats were found the last time I ran the scan.  However when I opened firefox the homepage was set to Vosteran.com - I deleted the link for that as the homepage.

I can't figure out why the device manager shows up blank and would also like it if someone could tell me if all of the malware has been removed.  Thank you.

Hello,
I recently booted my pc (XP, SP3) and it locked up at the logon screen.  After trying multiple times, I was able to click through the logon and it finally booted to the desktop, but all icons were missing.  Nothing would respond and mouse was locked.  I rebooted into safe mode and the desktop appeared.  I did not have SAS or MBAM on the PC so I downloaded then through a flash driveAs I went to run SAS I noticed it needed to be updated.  Tried to update and received message that there was no internet connection.  From there I ran MBAM.  Finally was able to boot to desktop.  Since then the Flash drive does not shop up in My Computer.  I have noticed the screens in my computer, control panel, etc... are not classic view or XP's version.  Also, the screen in the Device Manager as well as the print manager are blank.

My wife's system has no sound. I did an upgrade install of XP pro hoping that might take care of it to no avail. The card shows up in the device manager as working properly, but in the sounds applet in control panel it says no sound device is installed. I have tried delting the cards and reinstalling from scratch, I've tried installing a different card none of those things work. I have spent many unhappy hours trying to make the thing function again.

The system is running XP SP2
AMD athlon 2800+
Gigabyte GA 700VT600L
1 gig memory
Onboard sound or Soud Blaster Audagy (sp?)

The system I am using now is the same configuration and it has never had a problem. I should say that her sound worked until a browser hijack got through. Once I cleaned it up the sound was gone.

Having 2 systems set up the same way I thought would make troubleshooting esier. Nope.
I have all the same services running as her box and I have sound I'm out of ideas short of a reformat and reload. She teaches school and has a TON of little programs that would require me to spend all my free time fo the next month reloading her box. I am out of ideas.

Installed SP3 back in September and after that my computer was having major problems and I was having absolutly no problems with my Compaq Presario with SP2 before this. I did a system restore back to before I installed SP3. It never came to my attention about device manager or networking until a few days ago when I was trying to connect my mp3 player. Computer is not recognizing my player but it does recognize my digital camera..so I am requesting support from the makers of my mp3 player. But no matter what I plug into my USB, I never have a connecting hardware icon. So I decided to check out my device manager and to my surprise its blank, no matter if I am in safe mode. Also my Network connections empty, but I am obviously getting through on my ISP. Opening My Computer is slow too. Audio and printer still works.

I have tried everything but messing with my registry. Somewhere I read about removing all keys beginning with $%&'()* and I searched in the registry for these and found quite a bit. But they were in a different place then where other people were finding it in their registry. Also something to do with Norton, but I didnt have Norton at the time of SP3 install. These are the only places the FIND function found any in the registry:

Hi!
I've been having lots of troubles with my windows xp. So I decided to reinstall it, so far, it does. At the 1st loggin, nothing seems to be broken, but when I start to install my other devices or software, an error message pops up and says:

" MMC.EXE - Unable to locate component
This application has failed to start because MSIMG32.dl was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem "

This happends when I try to open ANY service manager, device manager, services, performances, anything related to the windows core.
Also, when i try to edit the registry (regedit) it says that "The administrator doesn't allow this service"..... supposedly I'm the administrator...

I have a sigle HDD, with 4 partitions, a windows partition, where I only install windows and office, and then other partitions for my files and backups.
I use 1 external HDD and a USB memory too.

I've formated the partition where the windows files are installed, several times now, but the problem persists.

Any Ideas?

Hi tkmuthuvel,

First, assuming that you are using an Administrator account or one with admin capabilities, you should be able to do (and you must use an admin level account):
Start>Control Panel>System>System Properties window display
Select Hardware tab, select Device Manager button

What kind of a network account are you trying to configure from your ISP: dialup, DSL, cable?

Your ISP software should be providing you with an easy to use account profile creation method in their software. If you are dialup, most likely they will dynamically assign you a new IP address every time you login for Internet access. If you are DSL/cable your modem will be given an IP address (static) by the ISP and you must set it up - so, they must tell you the IP address.

I have a Sony VIAO running 98SE, I am unable to install drivers for the sound card. I have tried several things.
1. I removed the sound card cleaned the gold fingers and reinstalled the card-no effect
2. I have gone in the device manager and removed the sound card, rebooted , pnp recognized the new device and installed it I think? but did not install the drivers for the device?
3. I have gone into the control panel\add new hardware , I see the sound card listed as PCI multimedia audio device, I select this device and it says the device is installed but has a problem.
it lists the device as follows
device type-other device
manufacturer-none specified
hardware version-016
device status:the drivers for this device are not installed (code 28 )
5.I now try to reinstall the drivers, the update driver wizard comes up, I get a error message "the publisher cannot be determined due to problems below: The object to be verified is unknown to the trust provider.
Any suggestions in this matter would be greatly appreciated.......

A:[SOLVED] Unable to install drivers for sound card?

You will have to find out the name of the sound card- you may have some paperwork that lists it, or you can probably see a list of the hardware that came installed with the Vaio at the Sony website...search or enter the system model, serial number, ID number, whatever it asks for and there should be a system inventory you can print that shows the sound, video, modem, etc...then you need to locate the folder the drivers are in, or download the drivers for your operating system, or get them from the Restore Applications CD..for your make and model of VAIO, and for your specific sound card. Perhaps you jotted down the exact model of sound card? The sound drivers are ususally knocked around by either some hardware conflict like an IRQ or a modem install, I had problems with sound from installing a USB camera....
