No matter what option i pick in the safe mode list, the computer will not start. when i choose any of the safe modes, (safe mode, safe mode with networking etc) the computer displays a list of random commands (i dont understand any of it) and then restarts. If I try to Start Windows Normally, or use last settings that worked, it seems to start loading, and then restarts.

Any ideas?

I was browsing the web and my laptop froze. I held the powe button to turn it off and now when i turn it on, it only goes to the windows logo and no farther. If i leave it alone, after 20 minutes it goes to a black screen with a cursor. I have tried starting in safemode as well and it only loads some of the files before freezing. I have also tried startup repair. After a few minutes it gives a few options such as system restore. I tried a restore and it still doesn't load. How do i fix this?

Turn off computer.

Turn back on - as soon as you've pressed the power button - tap F8

This will present you with a number of boot options. Select

#1 Hi, basically this probem arose from nowhere. I came back from holiday 6 days ago and my pc took longer than i remember to boot. Only till i realised the next day and day after it was getting longer and some times not loading past the 'Windows' screen. Each time when it hasn't loaded fully, I turn it off and re-boot pressing F8 to get up safe mode, which doesn't work at all.
It gets stuck on '/avgdiseh' doesn't load past and will stay like that till turned off. Start up repair does absolutely nothing, it asks to do System restore which then errors and reboots, if i press cancel it stays on the 'Scanning' screen for hours.. (8 hours today)

#2 I've now seemed to run into another problem trying to boot from my CD drive. First time I loaded everything correctly got to 'install windows' screen clicked start up repair which did nothing. Ever since that windows won't detect my CD drive even though it opens and did read CD's.(watched a film on it the other day)

I've looked online and other people have had the same problems and clearly i haven't found a solution yet. I've tried cleaning the inside of my case, double checking connections, changing boot options. From what i've read its either a failed HDD, failed RAM (, or failed CD drive in the case of my second dilemma)

I'm just curious as to whether anyone can pin point what the problem is. If its an easy fix or whether it is possibl... Read more

Run a system file check to look for corrupt files. It will try to do repair if any found.

Right click at Start button > click Command Prompt (Admin) > at the flashing prompt, copy/paste this.......
sfc /scannow

> press Enter.
It will take quite sometime.
When finished, it will give you one of the 3 reports...............(paraphrasing)
1. No integrity violation.
2. Found corrupt files and repair successful.
3. Found corrupt files but unable to repair.

If the report is #1, your solution lies elsewhere.

My kids Dell computer was VERY slow a few months ago but was still limping along. We had to go to CA for a couple months (my father passed away) and now that we're back I knew I needed to fix it so my kids could get their school work going again... well now the thing won't even move past the Welcome screen.

I don't even know what to do to get it to start up so I can check for viruses. Please help.

A:Won't start up past the welcome screen

I hope someone can please help me!

I finally got the computer to start up past the welcome screen, I went in and downloaded Avira Antirvirus and ran the scan. I also renewed our subscription for Previx and upgraded to the 8.5 I think it is.

Everything was OK for about half a day. We got home yesterday afternoon and there were a ton of open windows that we didn't open.

So today I have been trying to get it to work again and am running into a brick wall everywhere I turn.

It starts up to a blank desktop or it will have the bottom tray thing but no programs open.

I started it in safe mode and tried about 6 times to do Avira scans (it can't do a Previx scan because it's not online) Each time I try to do the Avira scan it gets about 5% done, finds 5 viruses (I wrote down the first and last ones, that's all I saw it list) the first one is TR/vundo.Gen and the last one is TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen. After about 12 minutes of scanning I get a popup thing saying that the computer needs to restart, here's part of the message, I only saw it happen once and only had 30 seconds to write it down so this is the jest of the message:

NT authority/System
DCOM server
process launcher service terminated unexpectedly.

Then it restarts the computer and then I start the whole process again.

I REALLY need to get this computer up and running, my kids school programs are on there and she needs to finish her work and can't get to her programs. I don't know wha... Read more

I have tried a few restarts with no success. The only screen change I can get is when I put into hibernation mode and get the "preparing to hibernate" screen. Any ideas as to where to start????

Good thing my Mac is running, I guess the Chevy is going to have to pull the Ford out of the mud again.

I am trying to fix my friends PC for him and basically he got some bad malware it was Antimalware Doctor he said it was called. After he restarted it gets to the first screen does all the checks and then it goes to a black screen with a blinking white cursor in the top left corner and will not load past that point.I can access the BIOS though on start up .I cannot even get to the safe mode prompt or anything and all this happens before the XP logo. Wondering if anyone might have an idea on how to get to safe mode somehow (trying to no reformat as he has stuff he doesn't want to lose) once there I will have no problem removing the virus.

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop, and yesterday after running slow it finally froze up. I waited 20 minutes for something to happen, and nothing. I couldn't even start task manager. So I turned it off and turned it back on. It does the windows starting up screen then goes to the black screen that gives me the option of starting windows normally or doing a start-up repair. I tried starting normally, and it just cycled back to that screen. I tried the start-up repair, and it immediately came back to that screen. I tried to boot it in every mode possible: Safe mode, Safe mode with command prompt, last known good configuration, etc, and nothing. It just goes back to the windows starting up screen and then back to the orginial black screen. A blue screen does pop up right before the black screen, but it flashes to fast to see what it says. I put the windows 7 disc in and tried to run a system repair, and it ran for literally 6 hours. When I tried to cancel, it wouldn't. Is there anything else I can do?

Hello and thanks alot for helping us!

I have an XP machine in my home network that got infected with IS 2010. When I start the computer (in safe or normal mode) i get a fake welcome screen (the blue Windows welcome screen) with the "administrator" button. I am sure its fake because I see the desktop "flash" for a split second before the fake screen covers it. I can't get past this fake start up GUI to take your recommended countermeasures. I just need a clue so I can get "in" and get this scourge out! I am a veteren of fighting the AV 2009 war so I know something about these things. Anyway, I have already taken one interesting countermeasure. Since I couldn't get past the fake start screen, i removed the hard drive and attached a raid to USB adaptor cable. I then cleaned the drive by scanning it with MBaum from another machine thru the USB connection. Both Mcafee and MBaum found numerous infections and cleaned them. But upon retrying I still get the fake screen when I reboot with the cleaned drive in the first machine. I repeated the cleaning procedure and the infections had regenerated. Any ideas how to get past the fake screen or to clean remotely with the 2nd machine?

Thanks
John

Thinking it was a virus or whatnot, i quickly disconnected and clicked on the start button to restart the computer. I noticed that the "my computer", "control panel", "network connections" in the start menu all were replaced with "folder", which really started to worry me. I continued the process to restart and everything goes fine until the blue screen that you choose the logon account. A:xp won't start (can't get past logon screen)

Taking it literally, you have a "recovery" CD and not a Windows XP CD?

These vary in nature, some allow a repair, some only allow a full recovery (which will lose all your data). Unfortunately we cannot tell what type you have, only you can tell.

If you can do a repair (a reinstall "over the top" of the existing Windows) thats what you want. Otherwise put your hard drive into another XP machine (changing the drive to a slave with the jumper settings) and save your critical data, then reinstall after resetting the jumpers and refitting the drive to your PC.

Have you not got your critical data regularly backed up though?
Such events as this, including drive failures, are not at all uncommon (unfortunately). Hard drives are only "temporary storage" at the best of times.

Yesterday my computer wouldn't turn on, it went straight too windows blue screen after a second of staying on the splash screen. It says I need to run chkdsk /f. I have tried that. Tried running in:
safe mode.
safe mode with networking.
safe mode with command prompt <<which is supposed to let me run chkdsk f/, right?
last known good configuration....you get the point. Everything on the F8 screen I have tried.
Now today, the only thing it will do is go to the F8 screen upon startup. Everytime I select an option it takes me back to the splash screen for a second and then flashes back to the blue screen of death

I can not run chkdsk at all.!! I know from all the threads I have read that the only other solution is to reinstall Windows XP, tiny problem, my CD drive does NOT work I try to load it in the second one (the burner) but I dont think it reads it from there. Hi,
Answers & help much appreciated.

My PC tries to start from boot-up, the tower makes all the right noises (please be gentle, I,m no expert!) the screen goes black for longer periods than it used to when all was OK.

Then on reaching my wallpaper & desk-top icons the screen flicks on then off repetitively and will progress no further. If I leave it, it'l just go black.

I've done a 'system restore' with no success.

The only way I can get booted up is to switch off at the mains, wait, switch on and press F8 until I get the option to 'Go to last known good configuration'.

I did this and got the following 'error report' that I was invited to send (I did)

szAppName : svchost.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.2180 szModName : wuaueng.dll
szModVer : 5.8.0.2469 offset : 0007cb9a

It then said click here fot 'tech info' I did so & got this:

C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER4ab8.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER4ab8.dir00\appcompat.txt

Please could someone help me sort this out?

A:Can't get past flickering screen at start-up ..

It's now got worse!

I stopped Windows Automatic Updates just in case.

I've tried System Restore twice but when it re-boots all I get is the flickering screen on the desktop (wallpaper?) with my icons. I can therfore get no further. So I switch off at the mains. Very abrupt & not good for the machinery I fear!!

Pressing F8 only gets me to a flickering screen and I can get no further. F10 seems to accomplish nothing either.

The only way I can boot is using an "XP Boot disc" (provenance unkown) that I downloaded (from somewhere) in Feb.'06

I either did not make, or have lost, the restore discs that one should creat when first using a PC. I bought mine in Apr.'04 - it came pre-loaded with XP and was bought from a chain store so it's legit.

When I try to make recovery discs now I get a pop-up saying partition cannot be found. Though I think the Recovery is on my 'D' drive as there is a folder labelled 'Recovery' in there but it has a padlock symbol.

I tried dragging this to My Documents and removing the 'read only' check - but still no joy.

I tried using the Install icon in folder I386 (?) but get a pop-up saying that the "installed prog is newer than this one" or words to that effect. I have XP with Sp2 which is newer than the version that was installed at purchase. Is there a workaround for this?

If I leave the PC swtiched on I can use it as if nothing is wrong.

Any ideas most welcome.

Here's what happened. My mother board died, so replaced with one today. Got everything back up and running except my wireless. Tried a couple different drivers still nothing, so I thought maybe it was something in the bios. I did the load setup defaults in the bios, since there were only very basic settings in the bios (nothing for devices at all in it except boot order). Restarted and now after going to the windows 7 starting screen I get a flash of a blue screen and it reboots. The blue screen is flashing so quick I can't get the error code, the best I can tell it may be 0x0000007B so I went back into the bios and it's set for sata enabled. Ran several repairs and tried system restore. I also ran the hdd and memory test in the bios both came up fine. Can't get into system to try anything else. I absolutly cannot reformat this hard drive. I have tax programs and codes in my emails I need before I can do that, with client information on it. The last time I saved this info was before tax season so if I wipe it out all client info for this year is gone. Any ideas what I can do? I tried getting in safe mode as well, still went to that blue screen and restarted again. Thanks for any help in advance.

A:Can't get past Window 7 start screen

Buy a new hard drive and install Windows on that drive. Put your old hard drive in an external USB enclosure or use a simpler USB docking station and copy your important data to the new hard drive.

Unless your new motherboard is the same model as the old motherboard, you shouldn't expect your old hard drive to be plug and play. You should expect to perform at least a Windows repair install or more likely a full clean install.

Hi,

Please help.

My desktop has been randomly rebooting on its own & now I can't boot up

I'm on Win 7

I've tried to restart several times. I'm afraid to do the repair option b/c the last time I did that last year, I almost lost all my data. But I guess I have no choice now.

It could be the heat in this apt. as my landlords are slum landlords, they refuse to fix anything & I've been dealing with 90-107 degree heat b/c the AC won't stop running & I can't afford to run it 24/7.

I don't know what to do, now I can't work

Thank you in advance

A:Windows won't start up past logo screen

Try booting it while repeatedly tapping F8 that should get you into safe mode, it could be a damaged driver that the system can't load.

Hello,I have a hp Pavilion g6-1d48dx Notebook PC and have recently been unable to get it to start. When I turn the power on, it takes me to the Windows Error Recovery screen and asks me whether I want to launch startup repair or start Windows normally. No matter which option I choose the computer becomes a grey screen (although i can still move my mouse). Anyone else have this problem? - regards, Josh

This has happened to me before but in the past, it's always kicked in after say, about 20 minutes.

I had trouble earlier getting it to load up my desktop so I did a system restore which put it 2 hours back from where I was.
Back up went through just fine.
Once it rebooted, it wouldn't even get that far. It now hangs up at the hewlett packard intro screen and no farther.

I'm using someone else's computer and won't be able to check back in until tomorrow night.

I've restarted it a bunch of times and let it sit there for 2 hours. Still nothing.
I've used compressed air to blow out the inside of the tower (worked once before) but still nothing.
Not sure what else, if there is anything else it can do.
It was running fine all day until I did a reboot, thanks to ebays new Sell You Items Form.
Hung up there but that's been happening to everyone. Not a unique problem
Everything else was working fine.

To add to this however, although my computer has been running fine up to this point, I haven't been able to do a full scan disk or defrag. It freezes when I try to do that.
I can only do the short version of scan disk.

I don't know if these two are related as my computer hasn't been able to do that for...
6 months, maybe more

any advice is much appreciated

Thanks

Sounds like a problem you should have dealt with earlier.

Try booting from a Win 98 or ME floppy and running scandisk. Just type:

I have an HP Pavillion elete. win 7/64. 3 times today I got the blue screen saying that win has toshut down due to an error. It lists several error codes, but the computer shuts down before I can copy them.
The first 2 times, the system restarted OK, but the 3rd time was bad.
I tried to restart using the power button, then tapping each ofthe above listed keys to try to get anywhere, but no results. On ESC, it would say Loading boot options, but nothing happened within a few minutes. I shut down each time with the power button, and nothing seemed to work. F10 said opening setup options, but again nothing happened in a few minutes. Each time I'd leave the screen on for several minutes, but it never got past there.
I put in a repair disc and started, but it didn't boot from that. I tapped F8 on one try, but it wouldn't open in safe mode.
Finally, after I left the screen set for a fairly long duration, it started again. One item on the blue shutdown screen said that I could try resetting the BIOS to skip casching and one other item, but I have no idea on how to do that.
I'm now waiting for the next shutdown and will try to take a picture of the blue screen so I can report the error codes.
One previous time when it shutdown, when it got started again, it ran a diagnostics check; everything pased OK, soI assume it's not a hardware problem. I've done a couple of restores going back on point at a time, but so far that hasn't helped; I'll continue to try earlier points.

I am trying to help a family member fix their desktop they got from someone else and when I turn it on the computer keeps restarting and won't boot past the Windows start screen. It gives you the black screen with options of which way to start (i.e. safe mode) and no matter which one you select it restarts the computer and sends you right back to the same screen, it was an endless loop of restarts(I tried clicking each mode type and tried to get it to restore from the last working restore point after each it just restarted again). Can anyone help me figure out how to get back to the regular operating screen so I can get it virus/malware free and working again?Other Info:- This computer is as far as I know infected with at least one type of virus/malware (which was part of turning it on,so we could download software to remove whatever is on it.)- We do not have any software disk(s) for the PC -It is a Windows XP editionAny help or direction to help would be greatly appreciated, as I am completely lost! This started about a month ago when a system restore completely mucked up my computer. I've managed to fix most of the problems (NoelDP is a wizard) but I can't get past the start up screen with the Nvidia drivers enabled. I think I managed to get past it once after a clean install but then I kept getting BSODs. It could be an outdated BIOS (when I click on @BIOS in the GIGABYTE folder in 'All Programs' I get a BSOD) but I really want to know if there are more options before I start mucking around with BIOS flashing.

The graphics card I have is a GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 660 and I've done clean installs of at least 3 different Nvidia driver versions.

Nakitu mate this is the right driver for the card - not the top one as it is beta and I would if I were you dump the AVG and pick a different security.

The fans power up like it is going to start. It repeats this loop indefinitely. I tried holding the reset button next to the charger port and still nothing.  Suggestions?  Thanks

tried safe mode, last know goof conf and normally - shows the windows logo with the progress bar - it goes round one and a half times approx. and then a BSOD flashes for a fraction of a second and pc restarts and whole process starts again.

I'm guessing it's a problem with the camera driver but how can i get rid of it...thanks

Any help on getting back into windows appreciated...Thanks

Hello giovannicosta

Certainly sounds like the camera driver.
Boot into Safe Mode Options Screen (the one with Last Known Good Configuration on it) by pressing F8 at bootup and choose
'Safe mode with command prompt'

At the command prompt type
C:\Windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Hopefully this will open System Restore, so restore to before you installed the camera.

Is this where I post? I am not entirely sure...

I am asking from work because I can no longer use my home PC because.....

I changed my internet provider and after 3 months it finally got up and running....
only to be attacked by at least 24 viruses (along with a pop-up cheerfully reminding me that my McAffee expired on Dec. 31!!!)
I downloaded a Beta sweep (?) from Microsoft which detected 24 items...so many win32 and an Rbot too!!

Anyway I would paste the log, but I got off the internet as quickly as possible, tried to do a system restore but my computer failed on me and then the last thing I remember doing was loading fail safe options...

I woke up to a computer that when I turn it on doesn't leave the original black screen (says energy saver master and slave ports and down at the bottom says "press DEL..."

I HAVE pressed DEL and it restarts and takes me back to the almost frozen initial black screen...

I tried loading the OS software during the frozen screen and whilst off...neither has worked..they just go to that black screen...interestingly enough, I get a red light (running) on my tower as well as a normal green light for power on...and the red light does not go off...

Is there any help out there?

The thing is, i want to remove some items from my start screen and right clicking does not bring up any menu (which it used to on my previous win 8.1, this is new installation).
WEe, I deleted some files which were actually looking like shortcuts (had arrow below icons, like shortcuts) in C:\Users\ (and directories in it), thinking that these shortcuts are just useless. And I think this somehow caused the problem.
Anyways, now I want to remove a few thing from my start screen and no option is appearing. Is there any way to manually remove them?

Heres a screenshot->

So I turn my computer off one day only to find it wont start the next day. I open the case up and see the led is on. I flip the switch on the power supply off then on and quickly press the power button. My computer starts but the following time I shut down the computer it again wont start and now the led is blinking. I've never had any issues like this before, any help would be appreciated.

I don't routinely use many usb devices, only my mouse and keyboard and every now and then my ipod. I figure the issue is likely either the power supply or the motherboard. The ps is almost two years old while the motherboard is only about three months old.

A:Computer wont start, power supply wont start, blinking led

It sounds to me like your PSU is the problem, get a hold of another and plug it to your computer and see if that will make it start, if it doesn't it might be BOTH your motherboard and PSU. A bad PSU will burn a motherboard.

"windows closed unexpectedly"..etc and gives the options of

"safe mode"
"safe mode with netwroking"
"safe mode with command prompt"
"start windows normally"
"start windows with most recent working config" (or something similar)

Im sure most of you are familiar with this screen, when any of the options is selected
the computer begins to start up but then makes a struggling noise and returns to that screen
we can get past it.

If someone could help me out with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Hey.

My toshiba laptop was working fine yesterday. This morning when I turn it on I see start-up repair or start normally. I always make sure to use shut down so that screen shouldn't show but it did. I didn't install any new software/updates.

So now I try normal, "Starting Windows" then there is a quick bluescreen that restarts laptop without me being able to see what the bluescreen says.

Next option was to try start-up repair. It says windows is loading files. Then 'Microsoft corporation' but the bar doesn't load at all it just goes to a black screen. And when I let it sit for awhile, cursor appears and I can move it around but nothing else.

Now about the CD/USB fresh installing. When I went to BIOS,put default, save, restart, and change settings boot from USB or CD, tried both of those but for those it loads windows files then stuck on Starting Windows.

I tried my windows CD I bought and also USB/CD home made copies by downloading it and burning. Same Starting Windows error.

Please help I would like a clean install for I don't have anything of importance to need to back-up.

A:Only options: Start-up repair, Start normally. CD/USB boot no result.

After only just having one problem solved on here I have encountered another and I think it is fairly problematic but am far from understanding it - please help!!!

I downloaded the new version of Internet Explorer (version 8) as this was an option when I signed onto the web this afternoon (I previously had IE 7 and am running Windows XP version 2).

But after downloading this I had trouble getting onto the net (though I seemed to be able to initially). So I restarted the PC. But, it did not restart.

Instead I get the following message on a plain black screen when I try to run my computer:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

What is this file? I have an Acer Aspire notebook which came installed with Windows XP Version 2 (I have no CD drive currently).

I have looked on the microsoft website (I am currently on a different PC) but dont understand anything that is posted on their about this problem.

Do I need to re-install a new operating system? Will this mean I will loose all my data that is on my computer? This is very precious to me as I am travelling and I have saved on my computer photos and diary entries - I would be very upset to loose them.

What is my best course of action? Should I take it to a specialist. Again I really hope I can prevent the information that I did have saved on there from being deleted.

Thankyou to anyone who can assist.

StarJune,
Welcome to TSG.
From your description of the fairly normal but unrequested shutdown, this could possibly be a windows update that failed.
What type of laptop is it? Do you have the Operating System disk? If not you can and probably should order one from the manufacturer.
Take a look at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-are-the-system-recovery-options-in-Windows-7

I would attempt a Startup Repair first, then try System Restore.

Hello. I have (in the past few months) been having issues starting my Lenovo G570 laptop, which runs on Windows 7 (unsure what bit), with AVG 2015 as its antivirus. It will turn on, and display the 'Starting Windows' screen. However, it will not load past this point, no matter how long I leave it.

Upon pressing the power button, the screen will read that there is an error and gives me two option: system repair or start normally. The system repair option then brings me to a page that will scan and prompt a restore - however, this restore does not work as it must completely reboot to complete the restore, which is not possible due to the fact that it sticks on the Starting Windows page.

Another option is the F8 menu. From this menu, I have tried most of the options with sufficient loading time to allow my laptop to process. Not a single one of the three safe mode options will boot, and stops loading at AVG's files (which leads me to believe it is my antivirus). I have also attempted repair system and last known config, both of which ultimately prompt a system restore. I have attempted numerous system restores at different dates, and none of them are successful. Starting today, I have also received errors stating that the restore can not be accomplished.

This is all of the information I have at the moment, but I will add on as I come across errors.
Any advice would be lovely!

A:Lenovo laptop running on Windows 7 will not start past Windows screen.

If it completed System Restore and rebooted, did you choose Start Windows Normally?

You'll need to access to a Win7 disk or System Repair Disk to work through the steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start without depending upon possibly corrupt OS files.

These steps try everything that can possibly be done leading up to rescuiing your files to do a perfect Clean Reinstall Windows 7

The blue Panasonic screen comes up and then a solid black screen comes up and nothing after that.

I tryed F8 and clicking "Last knowin good configuration" and after the screen turns black but the computer is still on because the light is green.

Then it would restart and the process would repeat itself. Then after a few hours, the System Recovery Tools appeared so I clicked the Startup Repair. It searched for repairs, but after it started Attempting the repairs, I noticed that it would never stop. It has literally been Attempting Repairs for 24 hours and nothing is happening. It won't let me do a System Restore and I never created a system image. Now whenever I Start Windows normally, right after the Starting Windows the screen flashes blue then restarts. Hi everyone!

My friend has a huge problem. First, let me tell you what happened before the incident. His PC was fine until it started to get really slow. It happened from one day to another. It needed ages for every single step (like opening the internet browser etc). After installing the anti malware software (malwarebytes) and the anti virus programme (avira) everything was fine again. The objects they found have been removed and after that the PC would work normally again.

Our happiness didnt last long cos after 3 days he wanted to turn his PC on and there was a blue screen stating the following:
A problem has been deteced and windows has been shut down to prevent damage.
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL ---> look at enclosed pic

The only option we had was to restart so we did. After that the PC keeps restarting itself without showing anything on the screen.

We tried to get into the bootmenu to select "repair computer" or "turn on in safe mode" but pressing F8 or any other key wouldnt help.
Only thing that works is F12 which opens up the BIOS menu.

I really hope you can help us.

A:PC wont start normally. Just keeps restarting itself. (black screen)

One of the main things that might help you in diagnosing that BSOD is the STOP error code: 0x0000000A. A quick Google search revealed this from Microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/KB/314063. Although sometimes their solutions are even more cryptic than their error codes.

Other results indicate a hardware failure. A good test would be to boot with an alternate boot CD like Linux. If it crashes with the boot CD most likely it's a hardware issue. Wish I could be of more help but it's tough to say without sitting in front of it.

Hi, I have a dell inspiron 1525 labtop. It was working fine, ran some updates then on the reboot it would not go past the post. The screen turns black with a blinking cursor at the top.
I tried unplugging everything, rebooting by taking out battery, and holding down power button.
The only menus I get are F2 and F 12, no F8.
I tried rearranging the boot order, I changed the Ram around I tried each by themselves.
I have a reinstallation cd, the repair did not work and I wasnt sure about completly redoing the installation.
It wouldnt let me put in a new partition.
I would appreciate any advice!!!!!
Thanks, Lisa

Did the repair installation start?

That model comes with a recovery partition, where did you get the installation disk?

See if you can start in safe mode. If you can go back with system restore.
If that fails try a recovery DVd

The mointor isnt the problem as I've had it tested it on another PC

Im hoping anyone would know a solution to this.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL ----> look at enclosed pic

The only option we had was to restart so we did. After that the PC keeps restarting itself without showing anything on the screen.

We tried to get into the bootmenu to select "repair computer" or "turn on in safe mode" but pressing F8 or any other key wouldnt help.
Only thing that works is F12 which opens up the BIOS menu.

I really hope you can help us.

A:PC wont start normally. Just keeps restarting itself! (black screen)

Pull out all unnecessary hardware and peripherals, like extra usb devices, sound cards, other expansion cards, etc, even video card if it has onboard video. Then try starting it again (you may discover which device is causing the problem - or it might keep doing it, but this is what I would try)

Hi all,

Every time I turn on my Dell Dimension 5150, I get greeted with "We apologize for the inconvenience... Windows did not start successfully".

My options are:

Safe Mode,
Safe Mode with Networking,
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last known good config...

Start Windows normally.

I have tried every option on several occasions... the windows xp logo comes up... then the dell logo comes up, everything seems to be running smoothly... then comes a black screen with a small flashing dot in the top left... and then I see the same"We apologize for the inconvenience... Windows did not start successfully" screen.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

A:Can't get past "Windows did not start successfully" screen...

Have you added any new hardware just prior to this happening? If so remove it and try again.

Did you install new software or run windows update just prior to it happening?

Without much to go on it may be worth doing a windows repair installation. It sounds dramatic, but it will not destroy any of your data or files, just attempt to repair the windows os installation.

There is a step-by-step guide with pics here. Hopefully that will resolve your problem if windows became corrupt somehow...

I reset my laptop using F8 but during the reset my laptop died! I tried turning it back on annnnndddd now it won't go past Dell screen??? It loads the dell sign, I can press f2 for setup and f12 for boot options. Then the screen goes black after the dell thing has loaded (like it would when it turns on) then it stays black and reboots again. Like a reboot cycle almost.
I tried pressing f8 to get up the recovery settings but even that's not loading or coming up.
Somebody please help me, I need my laptop to do work and I don't have enough money to get it fixed professionally or buy a new one.

Hi, I have an HP Pavilion p6-2060a installed with Windows 7. (no disc came with the computer)The night before, I was impatient and forced shutdown and went to sleep. The next day, I booted the computer to find a message at the beginning aboutrunning a disc check. I skipped it and proceeded with the normal booting. The desktop had changed to a default format and the bubble at the right hand corner stated that I was in a temporary login.I Googled how to return to my usual desktop and majority of the advice was to restart or log off (I only have one user)So after logging off/restarting the computer a few times my original desktop and files returned. The next morning when I booted my computer, the "disc check on startup" message appeared again but I was too late to skip it and it started the checkup.I needed my computer so I forced shutdown and restarted the computer, and I was again logged in to the temporary profile. I came back home around 6 after uni and booted the computer and ran the disc checkup. The computer restarted afterwards and then gave me the options;startup repair or start windows normally. I selected start normally, but it returned to the HP screen then gave me the two options again. I've tried to do startup repair but it just stops at the blue background with the mouse only moveable. None of the advanced options seem to work either, such as safe mode, etc.I've tried starting the HP recovery system but that doesn't work too.In short. Stupi... Read more

So, this all started when I couldn't turn off my system restore. I was doing lots of tests (virus, spyware, adware) trying to figure out what was wrong. I did find a few things (Trojan.Agent , Trojan.Delf.li , Dialer.Small , Backdoor.Lot.e) and was able to get rid of them, but it didn't help my system restore problem. I was gonna send you guys a HijackThis file, but started with the 5 steps to do before. I was gonna scan with adaware in safe mode, but I've tried getting to safe mode before with just pushing f8 or f5 with no luck. So this time I used msconfig. Under the boot.ini tab, I checked /Safeboot and rebooted. I haven't been able to get back into windows since. I can get to 2 different safe mode selection screens but cant get into windows using any of the choices. I made it so it won't restart on failure, and that's when it takes me to what I think is the infamous Blue Screen Of Death.

I am using my girlfriends laptop right now so at least I can search for answers. I need my cpu and don't want to have to reformat or anything like that. I don't have any boot disks cause they went missing when I moved. Please help. I will check back often so please ask anything. I need to fix this.

A:windows xp wont start, I get the blue screen of death

I feel your pain FL Jeff.. I just went thru a similar problem. It is probably resolvable but I will leave that to others. The short answer is I threw a wad of money at my problem and am almost 100% back to normal. However it took almost 2 weeks and a lot of determination. The solution (for me) was:

Purchased a new PC and monitor - $1,300
Purchased an external WD 160 gig My Book HD - $81 + shipping
Purchased Data Rescue PC software - $129

I was able to set the old PC BIOS to boot from the CD drive. Booted from Data Rescue PC and recovered the files to the external HD. I said that like it was straight forward but ya gotta follow the instructions. (note: I bought the Western Digital HD because it is formatted as FAT32 which Data Rescue requires). The HD did not require an install - the old PC recognized it immediately. I connected the new HD to the new PC and it too read it immediately.

It sounds simple and after the fact it kinda was but it took quite awhile to recover the files.

I know this isn't the solution you wanted but know that all is not lost, you just need to be patient.

Good luck,

Ted

HP Pavilion m7480n desktop with windows xp wont start after its failed power supply is changed. When I switch on the computer at first every thing goes normal until the starting logo of windows xp. It goes until the xp logo finishing all the boot start steps. When the xp logo comes we all know there is a scrolling bar under the logo, it takes it's time to scroll that bar, but finally instead of opening the windows it goes to a black screen and the green light of the monitor goes amber and flashing. Please send me your experience on this matter.

can start my pc up and it will get to the system start up blue screen, but it wont load that screen. i left it for like an hour and still nothing.
I tried going in in safe mode and this worked, but i need an internet connection
I thought maybe it has too much stuff on that account, ie hogging memory so i deleted a lot of stuff like 30 gigs of stuff but it still wont load
I need the internet connection at home so i tried going into safe mode with networking (i think that gives a net connection but maybe it emans something else)
i have ran spy bot s&d and deleted everything, also 2 other programmes + ms anti sypware new beta
thinking it was a virus but it cant be.

i tried a lot of the options you get in F8 but only the normal safe mode seems to work. i cant do a system restore as i deleted them yesterday as they were like a few gigs of stuff on it and i cant seem to find my xp cd so i cant reinstall windows, at least for 4 weeks as ican get a copy when i get home.

Any ideas what to do?

even if it just get me an internet connection in safe mode as thats all i need really.

Hi,
Not to be a smart A but the answer is yes. Could be either. If you have a monitor you can plug into the laptop that might help eliminate one. Is there any HDD activity [blinking light] to indicate thae drive is active? If both are non-op then I'd look at the power supply

Turned on the Dell this morning....would not load windows. All I get is a black screen. I tested monitor, and it is ok. I can hold the start button in for about 10 seconds, and the computer has a rush of fan, then blinks and goes to 3 green lights across the front, but will not shut off. . I tried putting a WINDOWS 7 REPAIR CD in the tray and boot, but still will not go to windows....just a black screen, The only way to get the computer to shut down is to physically unplug. The lights are on the front panel, and the power button is also on... and only go off with it unplugged..

After I unplug the computer, wait for about 5 minutes and restart.....it blinks the CD drive, and goes to the 3 green lights on the front and wont start just freezes with the green lights on front.
Where to start?

When i got to the setup menu, the laptop froze and it takes a while for it to respond and when it did, I exit the setup screen and my laptop turn black and it said operating system not found.
can somebody please help me figure out whats wrong with my laptop? I have lots of files(baby pics of my daughter) that are precious and I wondernif they could still be saved., please help

A:laptop wont go pass the acer start up screen

"Operating system not found" would indicate a HDD fault. The slowness is likely the result of the BIOS waiting for the drive to respond. So most likely it will need a new HDD and the OS/software reloaded.

Hi,

I have a AMD Athlon XP Processor.

After noticing that the speed wasnt preforming right - i.e. 1.25 GHZ instead of 2.25GHZ i went into the Bios on a MSI motherboad and went to CPU Speed and it was set as 100MHZ but i put it it up 200 thinking it was that or it could of been the CPU Frequency as 100MHZ and i put that up to 200MHZ.

After doing that it rebooted with a black screen nothing comming up.

I inserted a floppy disc to see if it was booting up as i would be able to tell to see if it accesses it - but no.

What has happened - is there anyway of doing anything, as the keyboard doesnt work either as i would of been able to change it in the Bios.

Thanks

ive recently fitted a new power box- which was installed ok and worked fine for a while

what can i do to get it working? i am baffled as this has never happend to us before- its a vista computer and its about four years old now- apart from needing a new power supply its been fine and its never donw this before

A colleague of mine has a Toshiba Satellite Pro C50-A-1MM laptop.

He is not particularly computer savvy.
He could not get on with Windows 8.1 and subsequently took it to a software/hardware supplier who uninstalled Windows 8.1 and installed Windows 7.

On starting it up all worked ok.
The necessary registration items were filled in at the start including a password for the start up screen. Subsequently he then booted up and the password sign in screen appeared.

He put in his password but the system would not accept it. He is certain of the password he chose but the system wont accept it.

He cant get past this problem to allow him to get into the machine to allow him to reset password. He cant do a reset of the password from the sign in screen because its asking for a floppy disc and his machine does not have a disc drive.
Any help pleas?

If using keys at boot won't work and XP can't start then you could try using you XP installation disk to boot windows or try a linux OS on a dvd. If you still can't get it to go then try a repair install off the XP disk. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
