xp is hiding my restored(?) documents

Q: xp is hiding my restored(?) documents

I got this new computer and the guy who sold it to me said he had wiped the drive clean and reinstalled xp. I transferred all my docs from my win98 computer to the xp computer's directory via windows explorer. I then discovered there are 3 or 4 identical directories, labeled My Computer, My Documents, etc. So I tried to organize everything into a single folder, deleting each as I successfully transferred folders and files.

I then found that the folders that I had transferred did not list any files in the right hand window pane. I right click on Properties and the number of files are listed. So I went to the Recycle Bin, highlighted every folder I had deleted, and clicked the restore selection. The directories still list have the correct space and number of files when I click on Properties, but the right side of the window is still empty. I would appreciate if anyone has any suggestions on how to fully restore the files.

A: xp is hiding my restored(?) documents

For starters, open a folder > click on Tools in the menu bar > Folder Options > click on View tab > click on Show hidden files and folders > ok

Secondly, is this your first time using XP or have you used it before?

I just did a non-destructive restore on my system, and I am trying to retrieve the files from the 'my old disk structure' folder. But, the 'my documents' folder is set to private, and now I can't access the folder. I was wondering if there is any way I can get around this, or can I basically kiss those files goodbye?

I notice when I save my edited video to my video folder they will show along with all the video icon blank pages usully title after what i named the video along with 'Index File" 'AVI.Index File' or a 'SCN File'. Im sure they are important but they sure clutter up the folder. Is there a way to hide these kinds of files or documents?

A:Hiding Documents and files in folders

If these are created by an editing program such as Vegas, SoundForge, or some other program, you can try setting them as "Hidden Files" but that may either muck up opening the files in the editor or alternatively, create a duplicate that isn't hidden, in which case you'd end up back at square one.

I hope someone can help me as I am not the most technical user of a PC. So if a solution is posted please make it easy.

Here is my issue. I bought a new PC with Windows 8.1 and I probably set up stuff wrong at the start.

I set up my wife and 2 daughters as Administrators like me but I thought that they would not be able to see my Documents or Pictures or Music as my Profile has a password. But they were able to see all my Music, Documents and Pictures.

Previously in Windows XP, all our stuff was separate and they didn't see any of my files.

Thinking all I had to do was make them Standard Users and this would rectify the issue but obviously it didn't. I have left them at Standard Users hoping for a solution from you people here on this Forum.

So I am asking is there a way on Windows 8.1 to have my stuff Private for me and for no one to see it?

Thanks

Gary

A:Hiding Documents/Music/Pictures from Other PC Users

Just go to your User name folder as shown in the picture, my name is blocked out in Blue' right click a library folder then choose "Share With" then choose "Stop Sharing" for any particular Library folder that you don't want to share.

You need to do this because in Windows 8/8.1 the Users folder is shared by default so that people don't get confused on how to share the Users folders, sharing of the Username folder was not enabled with Windows 7.

Good morning ladies and gentleman,

First post so hope I am doing this correctly.

Booted up one of the work computers this morning and noticed the desktop image was changed as well as some shortcuts missing.  Went to open one of the accounting software programs we use and it errored out saying it could not locate the standard template file.  I navigated to my documents and none of the files are there.  I showed hidden files and nothing still.  Ran Malwarebyte's once in and out of safemode and nothing has showed.

I cannot attach a DDS file, because when i download and try to run the DDS program whatever malware immediately moves the files to

C:\Windows\System32\Config\systemprofile\downloads

if I navigate to this location there is nothing in this folder

If i just run the DDS program from my download file still up in Chrome, It never pulls up any text files for me to attach.

Any help would be beneficial at this point.

Hi!

I downloaded a skin just for try but it wasn't that good so tried to get rid of it. I restored the system to an earlier restore point and the theme was deleted but the new icons remained; I deleted the iconcache.db and after rebooting the icons still stayed the same. Then I expanded the max cached icons tp 1024 in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Mircrosoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer (in fact i had to create a new string with Max Cached Icons) but still nothing happens to the icons.
I could manually change them to default icons by right clicking on them, properties (selecting default values here does work.. ) but i don't want to do this to all icons on my pc

can anybody help me, i want to get rid of this icons

Hey, folks. I read the "please read" post, but I'm not the most tech savvy fellow around, so I apologize if I'm omitting valuable information.

Over the summer, I bought a new laptop: an HP Pavillion dv6700 Notebook PC. I very much like it, but in late September, my hard drive crashed. It warned me that a crash was imminent, so I backed up my files beforehand. When it crashed, since it was under warranty, I took it in, and my HD has been replaced. It's a Western Digital hard drive, if that matters.

Well, I got my computer back today and performed a restore. The folks who worked on it gave the PC the name TEST-PC. The first time around, they'd called it OWNER-PC. I changed the name back. Also, they gave me the user name TEST. They'd previously called me OWNER. I changed it back. I performed a full restore from my external hard drive, and it seems to have gone successfully. However, every time I boot my PC, I'm still getting the user settings for the starting-from-scratch user they created for me. I can't access the user that has all my old files and settings as his default.

What do I need to do to be that user again?

Here's what my system info says:

Hi. . .

What files were copied back onto the laptop (e.g., user profile folders/files, \windows folder, \Program Files, etc...)?

You can change the computer's name as you know. You can change a user name via Control Panel, but the previous user name will remain under the \users folder - now attached to the newly changed user name. The unknown account probably refers to the owner of the files that you copied over as the ACL (Access Control List) shows your previous user name/SID (the S-1-5-21-etc...) number to be either the owner of the files or has permission to use them.

The only way that I know of get to where you want to be is to perform a Vista re-install using either the recovery partition or your Vista DVDs.

Please run the following command so that I can see exactly what is under the users folder -
START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | right-click on cmd.exe above under programs | select Run as Administrator | the cmd prompt ("DOS") screen appears - copy/paste the following (to paste into the DOS screen, right-click at the top, select Edit, select Paste):

Code:
dir c:\users\*. /a /q > %temp%\userdir.txt & start notepad %temp%\userdir.txt
A Notepad will appear. Copy the contents and paste them into your next post.

I've experienced this problem twice in the past week. Here is my current problem:

New Windows 8 computer
Moved Office 2010 install from old computer to new computer
Copied all documents to new computer by installing the old drive in the new computer (NTFS to NTFS)

When trying to open any DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT, or PPTX files that are stored in the Documents folder I get permission errors. Word will open an RTF file just fine. If I try to use any Office programs to save a file to the Documents folder, I also get permission errors. I can move the file to the Desktop and work with it just fine. I can then move it back to the Documents folder.

Here are the errors when trying to open files:
Word - Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges
Excel - 'C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\Book1.xlsx' could not be found
Powerpoint - The path or file name for C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\Presentation1.pptx is invalid.

When I try to use one of these programs to save to the Documents folder, I get the following error:
You don't have permission to save in this location.

I tried copying the files two different ways to eliminate any lingering NTFS permissions. I used a linux box to copy from the old drive to EXT4, then to a linux formatted FAT drive. I plugged this FAT drive into the Windows machine and moved the files over but got the same errors. Next, I copied the files from the old drive to a FAT32 drive using another Windows box. It sounds to me as though the administrator has made that directory path private. Are you the admin, and if so, are you logged into a user account with admin rights? If all else fails, reboot and log into the Administrator account and go to the control panel/users and change your preferred account status. While you're there, unlock the problem path to allow all users to view.

Ok, I need some help..

I know that the documents library is a "library" and when I save anything there it really saves the file to the default location(my documents).

I teach a basic PC course usage course to seniors and some of the PCs are now listing the "My Documents" and the "Public" folders above their respective files when they click on "documents". In the past all the files have been there but never a separation by folder in the listing. There are 8 computers in the LAb and 4 show the "my Documents" and Public location in the listing....

How can I get this back to where they only see the whole list of files without the folder separation in the listing...

Thanks for any help, this is confusing them...

John

A:Viewing the documents library displays my documents folder

Hello John, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It sounds like the default Arrange by, Sort by, or Group by folder view of the "Documents" library has been changed. You might see if doing what's in the yellow TIP box at the top of the tutorial below to click on Clear changes in the "Arrange by" (on toolbar) drop down menu may help.

File and Folder Arrangement - Group by - Sort by - Arrange by

Hope this helps,

Using windows explorer to do all of this...

Not realizing how this file system works, she deleted all files in Documents because many dupe files made it look like they were accidentally copied there multi times. On realizing what she had done, I promptly restored the recycle bin, hoping everything would return to normal, but all files went into the My Documents folder while the Documents folder ended up with a bunch of (mostly) empty folders originally from My Documents.

Normally, all you see in the Documents folder are documents, but in My Documents there may be sub-folders as well as files. After the gyrations, there were folders in the right pane of explorer under Documents, and only files in the right pane under My Documents, as if Documents and My Documents got swapped around. To make it more confusing, rt clk on My Documents, properties showed the number of files plus 66 folders! But no folders show up in either explorer pane.

I copied everything from the two folders to another folder for safety, then tried restoring the two folders. The result was to have only files in My Documents and folders in Documents as before, so, no help. No backups either. oye!

Any help will be gratefully accepted. tom

Hi all,

I've built another new PC, but for the first time I've installed a SSD to hold Win7 while all my data (in theory) will be held on my data drive (2 TB Hard Disk).

I've redirected most of my user folders just fine, "My Documents", My Music, Downloads etc. however when I installed my first game on this system, it's placing its saved games into "Documents"; note: NOT "My Documents".

Of course all my google searches throw back results for redirecting "My Documents" which is already done...

So is the "Documents" folder stuck in my user folder permanantly? Over the course of a year I don't doubt it will get very bloated with saved games, screenshots etc. so I really don't want it on my SSD drive and want to nip this problem in the bud if possible.

Basically is this possible to "fix" without relocating the entire "Users" folder?
p.s. Out of interest, I tried creating a "Documents" folder on my F: drive (my data disk) and it said that it already existed as "MY Documents"...Annoying

A:Documents vs. My Documents - Relocating folders off c: to data drive

Hi there. I have a feeling that I'm going to feel really dumb when I realize how to do this... but I've been baffled and nothing online has quite worked or applied to my issue. Here goes:

I'm running Windows 7, and have a habit of using the recent documents separated by program on the start menu. In other words, I'll go to Start, highlight Microsoft Excel (as it's a program I use regularly and therefore stays pretty close to the top of the start menu), and mouse over to the right to see my recent Excel documents.

Early on in my Windows 7 use, I had right clicked on some recent files and selected "Remove from this list" and they vanished from the recent Excel document list. However, I can't get them to ever come back.

I've tried resetting my recent document settings under Start Menu properties, even deleting "recent application data" files according to other sites. If I navigate to the files through the folders, I can open spreadsheets and have them show up, but the ones I've removed from the list will not show up, and I don't understand why.

I'm more than willing to provide any additional information, but hopefully someone can tell me this is a rather simple solution.

Thanks!

Hi. Bywaysct and welcome to TSF,

You can find out when Windows was installed by:

1. Start > search "cmd" > hit enter.
2. Type "systeminfo" without the quotes, hit enter.

Considering it's an older model the installation date should be some time back, not for instance a week before you got it. Other than that there's no way of knowing for sure that its a used PC.

Does this mean that for some reason my PC has resored to a 32 bit OS? or, was it like it before and i didn't notice and its quite normal? How can i return it to 64 bit without having to go through a factory setting restore and thus lose all my settings? The

64 Bit OS identify 32 bit programs in Task Manager by adding the *32. If you had a 32 Bit OS installed, then those numbers would not exist at all.
Therefore Windows 7 Restored the 64Bit OS and it is running as expected.lforbes

I logged into Windows and found that all of my user settings had been changed back to default. All the files that were in My Documents had been moved to Documents and Settings in C. I moved them back to My Documents and changed my settings back to the way I had them before. While surfing the internet a few minutes later, the system became unresponsive. I restarted the computer and logged in, but now I find that My Documents has completely disappeared. I can't even find my files in Documents and Settings. I had about 35 GB of music, so I hope I didn't just lose it all. Please help!

I have a Documents folder and a subfolder called My documents. This seems to me to be duplication. However when I delete a file from the My documents folder, it also deletes the deletes the file from the Documents folder. Is there a way to delete the My documents folder and have all the files located in just the Documents folder?

A:Documents AND My documents folders; Can I eliminate one?

Hello and welcome to the forums schodes!

As of Windows 7, the "Documents", "Pictures", "Music" and "Videos" folders appear displayed in Windows Explorer with a "My" prefix but are actually still stored in the file system without the prefix (as in Windows Vista).

So you don't have to do anything, no extra file is being duplicated, no space is wasted.

Hope that clarifies the situation!

I have four computers running ?identical? (obviously not) configurations of 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. All W7 updates are applied to each. I have all my dynamic data on a local network on a D-Link DNS-323 in a folder named My Documents.

Here?s the ?obviously not? problem. On one, I cannot install My Documents in the Library\Documents folder. If I click on Documents I get the message ?Documents is empty? ?No folders have been included in the library?. If I continue by clicking on ?Include a folder? and then select My Documents, I get a message ?This network location can?t be included because it is not indexed?.

Three computers included it without a hitch. This one refuses. Has anyone an idea of what is going on, or where to look?

Thanks.

On my XP computer I had numerous files in the My Documents folder. Some questions.

1. I simply copied them to my new Vista computer. So in Vista's Documents folder there is a folder called My Documents with all of these subfolders. Is this okay?

2. I moved the items in My Pictures subfolder of My Documents to the Pictures Vista folder.

3. In the My Documents subfolder My Music there are numerous files including a large iTunes folder. In the Music folder of Vista there is already an iTunes folder that appears to be a copy of the one in the My Music folder. Should I delete the files in My Music?

4. As for all the other files in My Documents, should I leave them or move them so that they are subfolders under the Vista Documents folder and delete the My Documents folder that I imported from XP. Or does it matter?

thanks.

A:My Documents in XP versus Documents in Vista

This is all a matter of personal preference.

1 - Yes, that's also how I do it at work.

2 - No problem there

3 - If you are unsure, it's never wise to delete them straight away (I don't think that there'll be a problem, but I'm not that good with iTunes). I'd suggest moving them to a Folder on your Desktop. That way, if anything goes wrong you'll know where they are. If, after a couple of weeks, things are still OK - then delete them to the Recycle Bin. That way you'll have even longer before they're permanently gone (but they will be gone eventually).

4 - I prefer to leave stuff where it is, but I've got lot's of space. You could move each file (to the Documents folder) as you use it - then, after a while, you'll know that the stuff left in My Documents isn't needed. Then you can either delete it, or save it to a CD/DVD in order to free up space.

Today, I was looking for an Excel file and encountered the following issue:

If I go to Libraries\Documents\Property Files\1105 Dart, I can't see the file I need. However, I can see it if I go to
C:\Users\Sales\Documents\Property Files\1105 Dart

I have 156 files in "Documents" and 153 files in "My Documents". Any idea how to correct this? My documents may have gotten 'out of control' after I started using Bit Torrent Sync to sync the documents folder between my desktop and laptop.

Thanks for your help!

My girlfriend logs on with her user name (Mary) at the XP Pro welcome screen. Hers is the only user name shown. In Control Panel/Windows Accounts she is listed as the only user.

In Windows Explorer (C:/Documents and Settings) there are four folders:

1. All Users
2. Config.msi (empty)
3. Default User
4. Ex-husband?s name (it used to be his computer, so somehow he is still around)

All the user data of my girlfriend is actually saved in folder four. Also:

a) At the top of the Windows Explorer tree the ?My Documents folder? points to Ex-husband?s ?My Documents? folder.

b) Later in the tree there is another folder called ?Mary?s Documents? which also points to Ex-husband?s ?My Documents? folder and contains the same files.

So my questions are:

1. Can I safely change folder four to my girlfriend's name? Should/can this be done in Windows Explorer, or somewhere else?

2. Can/should I delete the folder called ?Mary?s Documents? which simply reproduces the files in Ex-husband?s ?My Documents?.

3. Can I safely delete the folders ?All Users? and ?Default User?, which do not contain my girlfriend?s user data?

4. Can I safely delete the empty ?Config.msi? folder?

5. I would like to keep the ?My Documents? folder which shows at the top of the folder tree as it is convenient for my girlfriend to find.

I hope this makes sense. Any suggestions much appreciated.

A:'Documents and Settings' and 'My Documents' query

1) I wouldn't, but it can probably be done...it's hard to redirect those stupid Windows links. You could create your own shortcut to "Mary's Documents", copy the contents of the ex-husband's folder to the Mary's documents, then you should be able to delete it.

2) For safety's sake I wouldn't, but you could give it a shot... (or do what I said above)

3)No, they are default folders that WIndows uses for some mysterious purposes.

4)Definitely not!

5)Go to theeldergeek.com to find a registry hack which will let you delete the My Documents folders. Then add the new shortcut above.

Remember, if you delete something you shouldn't have, you can restore it from the recycling bin!:grinthumb

I was redirected here.

I encountered an error that said C Drive was having trouble being read, and the Windows program shaped like a little puzzle piece launched, and found about 14 errors, some of which it could complete, and others which asked me to pay to fix. At this point, I figured it was a virus. Anyway, I restarted the computer, and upon starting it up all of my documents briefly appeared, then vanished.

I cannot access them through any directory. The computer is also running substantially slower at this moment.

Around the same time, an error popped up that read "Catalyst control contre host application has stopped working"

I tried a system restore, to no avail.

How do I get my documents back? It is crucial, as I have several parts of an extensive psychology study due before the end of the month there, and I was planning on finishing it all over break. Thank you.

Good afternoon,
I use exchange online a lot (OWA) and a few days ago Internet Explorer started defaulting to OneDrive Documents Folder instead of my local Documents folder. It was running fine before that. Not sure what changed. I have since changed
settings in OneDrive to save locally instead of on OneDrive and even disabled OneDrive completely. However, every time I try to add an attachment from Internet Explorer, it defaults to my OneDrive folder and not my local folder. Anyone know of a fix? Yes,
I know I could just use a different folder and copy from my Documents folder to the new folder, but there's obviously an issue that I would like to fix. Thank you all for your help.

Okay, so my sister started up her computer, and the BIOS seems to have been corrupted and attempted to be restored. (I say seems to be since she never turned the monitor on. She saw no HDD LED activity and assumed something was wrong.) As a result, she shut the power off with the button.

Normally, on any other computer, this is not an issue, but this is my SISTER'S computer, the one that has given us 3 months worth of trouble. After an improper shutdown, it goes into an on/off cycle. It turns on, then a few seconds later, off. Then on, then off, etc. It did this several times (I shut off the PSU about five times) before it restored the BIOS. It went through the cycle three more times before finally starting correctly.

Was this a one-off thing? (it wasn't) What is at fault here, the mobo or PSU?

Specs:

Gigabyte EP-45 Motherboard
Raidmax Rx-700 Quantum (I know it sucks. You don't have to tell me.)
4 GB RAM
Intel Core 2 Duo
Geforce 9600

A:BIOS restored?

It could have been the mobo, or the PSU, or both. I would check the motherboard first, the BIOS corrupting for "no reason" may spell motherboard failure.

I removed a trial version of Microsoft Outlook 2003 Professional Edition. After doing this my computer would not allow me to access my Outlook. I tried restoring the system to an earlier date but it continued to prompt me to insert the CD. I returned the CD to my college bookstore last quarter so I do not have the CD. My last resort was to restore the system to its orginial state as when I bought it. " At least that is what it said I could do." Now each time I start my computer it shows this message " The application has failed to start because Prog.dll was not found. Re-installing this the applicaiton may fix this problem"
My computer is running very slow and freezes up and will not allow me shut down...not even on the tower. The only way to shut down and restart is unplug the computer and start over.

Hi there,

The problem seems to be a heritage from previous Windows versions. And seems M$ did not bother to work this problem out in Vista, there are still lots of requests in the net. Almost no "universal" solution up to date.

Although, my case is somewhat unusual.

At some point I noticed that the language bar had disappeared from it's usual place in the system tray. Thought it got hidden because it was inactive (I alsways use keyboard assignments). But that was not it. The usual sequence (alt+shift) did not work anymore. In regional settings->keyboards everything was fine as it should've been. Changes had no effect.

After surfing the net for two days found a temporary solution to at least be able to switch between layouts. I had to assign ctr+1 and ctr+2 to inmlement a "fixed" switching between the languages. Extremely uncomfortable.

Now the most interesting part. When a request for elevation appears (grey transparent background), I can see the language bar floating on desktop, I can touch it, move it, change input language. But once the request is comleted (OK or Cancel), it's gone!!

Another "mystery": the old scheme (alt+shift) works in non-unicode programs, such as command prompt, FAR etc. But doesn't want to work in any GUI application.

Any suggestions? I know XP registry fixes but they seem to be of no use in Vista.

Yakor

A:Language bar cannot be restored

Hi Yakor

Quick-Fix:
Do you still have a Language icon in your System Tray? (If you switch between installed display/input language choices, the current choice should show in the System Tray: such as EN for English, JP for Japanese, etc.). Make sure that you haven't chosen to "Hide inactive icons" in your Vista Taskbar "Properties" - or the icon might not be shown. If you can see such an icon, you should be able to right-click that icon, and choose "Restore the Language Bar" from the resulting option dialog box.

Quick-Fix #2:
Since the Language bar is a system setting, and the problem is recent, you might be able to retrieve your former settings using Vista's System Restore utility --- using a restore point from just before the Language bar disappeared. You'd likely have to visit Windows Update to reinstall any Critical Patches that arrived since the time the restore point was originally created.
_______________

Should neither of those approaches work, try visiting the Region and Language Options in the Vista Control Panel.

Control Panel
Clock, Language, and Region
Regional and Language Options

If you are using different languages with your input devices, you'd visit the "Keyboards and Languages" tab, and select "Change Keyboard" -- in the "Text Services and Input Languages" window, the middle tab is "Language Bar" -- I believe the option to show or hide the bar is available there.... A:Computer restored itself?

Im not sure as to why that happened but if you can somehow remove the harddrive and have a usb sata/ide connector you might see if anything of importance can still be salvaged.Of course you have to have another working computer to use the connector with. If so i would put all of it on a cd/dvd so it isnt lost forever.Anything that cant afford to be lost should always be saved somewhere in case a computer does fail.

So if I'm right, you can replace your default windows icons (on Win7 64bit) by modifying or replacing the Shell32.dll in the System32 and SysWOW64 folders. Well I did that awhile back. Now I want them back to default. Only problem is, I can't remember exactly how I did it... So, how do I do it? Because when I restart the computer after replacing both of the Shell32.dll's, nothing changes.

A:Restored Shell32.dll and no changes?

You could run SFC /scannow .

In elevated Command Prompt .

Open up an Elevated Command Prompt. Click on in type CMD . Right click on CMD under Programs (1) choose . On the User Access Control window click on the Yes button . Command Prompt opens up to C:\Windows\System32>_

Type SFC /scannow press [ENTER]

Or you should have a shell32.dll.old or .bak file you could change it that way and just use

Regsvr32 C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll

We bought a computer second hand and then did a factory restore. It will not play videos or anything (although it plays the opening commercials), and I am guessing there are some things we need to download back onto it. Flash players, etc? Is there anything else? It said it was going to do a bunch of windows updates, etc overnight.

It is an HP Pavilion g6 with Windows 8 .

Thank you in advance for any advice you may have!

A:Just Factory Restored - Now what?

What's the complete model number of that HP Pavilion g6 series laptop?
A dash and additional characters after g6 should comprise the complete model number.

Also advise what the exact product number(P/N) on it is.

---------------------------------------------------------------

You should get Windows 8 up-to-date and make sure everything is set up and working correctly before you install a bunch of programs, plug-ins, add-ons, etc. in that laptop.

Hello, I recently restored my computer to the origianl manufacture settings and found I lost my wildtangent games I have already purchased. How can I replace them? I tried downloading and than I entered my unlock code but It wouldn't accept this. Is there anything I can do?

A:Restored to manufacture

When you restore something to the original manufacture settings, you're basically deleting everything on your computer, and starting over again. If you're sure that your unlock codes aren't right, then try contacting Wildtangent, or wherever you downloaded the games from, and explain your situation to them, you're going to end up needing a new unlock code, and that's something we can't give you.

Hi,

1. Created the bootable iso from Macrium Reflect, size approx 130 MB on CD.

2. Restored the last image to see for the 1st time, it was even better than the original OS, more crisp.

3. Options checked , Verify and Trim.

3. Back up is on Seagate Scorpio Black HDD 7200 RPM.

My questions are any dos and don'ts before and after image is restored?

TFC is a great cleaner recommended by ThrashZone, IF ever required any reg cleaner that you would recommend?

Thoughts about CCleaner?

Thanks.

A:Restored Image?

CCleaner is by far the most commonly recommended "cleaning" product.

It has a long development history and is known to err on the side of caution. It's minimally intrusive, conservative, and problems with it are very rare.

Most would tell you to avoid registry cleaning, even with CCleaner. The benefits are very rarely noticeable and there is some risk. It's a poor trade-off. You're accepting some risk and have virtually no chance of perceiving any benefit.

If you can't help yourself and are obsessive and MUST clean the registry, do make backups before authorizing the cleanup.

Concentrate on your Macrium technique and how to use it.

I'd back up any images I'd made. They are valuable data.

You might do a virus and malware scan before making an image.

I'd avoid incremental or differential images unless you have an unusual situation of some type. Just do full images according to your personal schedule.

I like to make them manually rather than entrust any automated schedule because it keeps me in the game and requires that I remain familiar with the Macrium interface.

I'd probably re-make my recovery media from time to time and stay somewhat aware of new features or new problems in new versions of Macrium, but I certainly wouldn't jump to new versions automatically. If you have one that works well and you understand it, stick with it as best you can.

Hi, hope someone can help me out!

I have recently had to restore Windows XP home (SP2) after a driver install went VERY badly and Windows would no longer start (even in safe mode). It would just get to the boot screen, wait a few seconds and then I'd get a BSOD.

I managed to get access to my files using Bart's Preinstalled Environment live bootable CD (nu2.nu/pebuilder) and ran XP setup from my i386 folder. Everything went smoothly and I chose to restore the previous installation of XP. However, upon rebooting setup appeared to start again before an error message flashed up and the computer rebooted, going into a loop (start->xp setup screen->flash of error message->reboot). The error message says something about a password, although it's difficult to see what exactly it says since it's up for so little time. I'll try to work out what it says and post it here when i do.

Does anyone have any idea what I should do now? Bart's PE shows that I still have all my data intact from before (at least something's gone right). If anyone can get my machine working I will be incredibly incredibly grateful!

A:Have just restored XP Home and...

OK, I managed to work out what the error is:

lsass.exe - System Error
When trying to update a password, the return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct.

Hope that narrows down the list of potential problems!

Tried restoring several simple image files. Presto, it worked! However, problem is when I try to open it with the simple windows viewer I get that ominous, "no preview available screen." Okay, so forget them right? No I use MS Paint and get the message: "Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported." I'd give the files the big heave ho and forget about them, however when I open them with microsoft word, I get pages and pages of text which makes me think there's still the images hidden in there somewhere, and it just needs a restorative measure of sorts. This pictures are muy importante. Help!

Okay so I've just restored my computer for about the third time and am having soo much difficulty with it!
First of all I'm big on youtube and to view it again I tried downloading flash player multiple times trying a variety of ways. Everytime I tried the information bar kept popping up and prevented me from downloading it. Then I tried the link but the download got as far as installing the installation thingy (Clearly not a computer whiz). I tried to turn off the information bar from tool/internet options/security/ custom level, but my list on the custom level window is blank? I also tried managing my add ons but flash is no where on there and I know for sure it's in my computer but it's not on I guess?

Any help on anything Would be Greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

For starters try a different browser and see if you have the same problem (example: Firefox instead of Internet Explorer). That may help zero in on what is blocking this.

By "restore" did you mean to restored it to an earlier data or reinstalled Windows?

What does the information bar say?

I think I caught something on my computer but the main thing that happened to me today is that after i restarted the computer before it loaded the desktop a pop-up came up that said it couldn't find the local profile and had to use a guest one or something like that. When the desktop loaded it was like it got restored to a previsous pooint and all my pictures nd music were gone. My question is are these gone for good or is there a way to recover them?

A:Windows restored itself....

okay update on this....
i was able to get access to my my documents folder by going to C:\Documents and Settings\.

now my problem is first off that i still can not log on to my original windows profiles with all my docs and settings.

my second problem is that i have some type of spyware, adware, virus, or some other type of thing that i don't know about on here.

a few of the problems is that in the add/remove programs there are files in there simply called random things, like copy, webreg, docpro, hpmdtab, instantshare, qfolder, and a couple others ones but when you click on them all it says is that they are used rarely and theres no option to uninstall or nothing.

another problem is that there is this thing on the left side of the screen that gives access to your my documents, your shared folders, network places, and a couple other things. it is a bout a couple inches thick and stretches vertically across the screen. the format of it matches perfectly with how windows looks too.

the other other things i see is that i get some pop-ups to random sites and in the bottom right hand corner where it usually shows your internet connection that is not there anymore and it has always been there in the past.

thank you in advance to anyone that can provide some help.

I upgraded from a Windows 8 phone (ATIV Odyssey) to an 8.1 (Lumia 735) several months ago. Text messages from June 2013 through October 2014 were restored, but everything from October 2014 through March 2016 (when I upgraded) is missing. I used the Windows Phone Message Backup app to back everything up on my computer and the same block of messages is missing. Is there any way to find the missing messages in the cloud? Or a way to download them from the Odyssey? (contacts+message backup can't be installed on the Odyssey because the app is only for 8.1).

I am so peeved right now it is not even funny. Next time ready for PC I think i will be a mac convert after all this meesed up crap with windows.

Last night when I get home go to start computer and there is a error about missing dll file, then aas I click the error more missing file errors keep coming up, gets progressively worse until PC does not start windows. Ok, that's cool, I have backup and disk image on another drive in computer, no problem right, WRONG!!!

So pop in the windows 7 disk, go to restore disk image, error!!! Got a few errors while trying once I got one when I checked of not to include one of the disk, the one I keep getting is that there is not enough space on drive for restore. Now the disk the image is on is 150 GB, the disk trying to put it on is 500 GB, so why the problem???

So keep searching on my laptop and find a suggestion to do diskpart-clean. Go through every suggestion I found to use diskpart such as clean, =sytem blah blah blah. Still not worky. I install Windows 7 on the drive which works, install backup files and is there. But I want the image to restore. So in the new install I cant get it to do a image restore, so I try from Windows 7 CD again, FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now what, ok I have Acronis that I have never used on disk, lets give that a shot.

A window pops up asking for Disc 2 but when I insert it, it spits it back out and asks for disc 2 again. Please help. I'm afraid I lost of my child's photos and I'm beginning to panic.

Hi There ProblematicSit, Welcome to TSF!

Perhaps you ought to try this workaround; (you will need your Windows? XP SP2 CD).

(In the event that you do not have a Windows? XP CD with SP2, you will need to 'borrow' one from a friend or colleague, as the manufacturer's "Recovery Discs" will not work in this instance.)

Insert the Windows? XP CD in your drive. (Hold down the Shift Key to prevent it from starting.)

Go Start > Run ...in the box type in sfc /scannow ?please take note of the space between the sfc and the /.

This is the System File Checker...it will scan all the Windows? core system files to ensure that they are in their respective correct places, and if not replace them from the CD. (The MS Paint program is one of these core files.)

During the scan you may be asked to Insert the CD, if this happens just go retry and let it do its thing.

One important point: While sfc is running, it is not advisable to do any other work, or have any browsers/programs running on the computer, until the scan is complete. (This process will generally take around 45-65 minutes to complete).

Once finished, remove the CD and reboot your machine...all should be "Normal" (hopefully).

Please post back with the result, or if there are any further queries/concerns.

Kind Regards,

Hello, I had to perform a system restore on my computer while receiving help in the security section of this forum. After the system restore my computer runs a bit slower. I think it may have affected some of my drivers or processor or something. Whenever I play my mmorpg game, it takes a lot longer than before to load. Is there a quick way to check if any of my drivers need updating?

A:System Restored

Run chkdsk /r and sfc /scannow, one at a time.

Go to Search and type cmd in the search box, click on Run as administrator at the bottom of the  page.  This will open the elevated command prompt.  In the command prompt type in chkdks /r, then press Enter.  This has five stages, let the scan complete.  If you stop the scan it will cause problems.

Use the same process to access the command prompt to run sfc /scannow.

Please post the results.

After innumerable problems with XP, I opted for a complete restore (as opposed to a Recovery). I meticulously installed all ten (10!!!) of the H.P. Restore disks and set about the task of restoring software applications and personal settings. But between reboots, it fails to retain my settings. Ex: I set the desktop background to a dark blue. Upon reboot, my desktop is once again that funky slate blue. I set single click in folder oprtions, but after reboot, it requires double click every time. Even worse, perhaps is where it won't even hold my settings at all. For ex: on the task bar: There is a check mark in front of "Lock the Taskbar"; I click properties, unclick the lock box, but immediately the lock is back on again. I have a Canon Printer and an Adobe PDF maker; I tried to select the Canon Printer as the default -- it will not allow me to designate any printer as the default. And on and on it goes.

I have a Hewlett Packard Pavilion a350n, Pentium 4. 2.80 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 160 GB HDD, and other good stuff. Before Restoring the OS, I reformatted the HDD. So I am at a loss as to why it will not save my settings. Any ideas? I will be deeply grateful.

Hi,

I did a factory restore this morning and now I'm having a few problems I didn't have before. I'd appreciate any help on fixing any of these:

Windows update didn't update fully and now says totally updated - even though nothing on the windows 10 stuff, etc. I had >60 updates left (I do a few at a time) and got a BSD when rebooted then there were only a few 8 left when I got back from the BSD (the BSD seems to be over some hardware plugged in that seems to be failing but not sure what it is). Windows was activated as soon as I finished the restore - before starting to update things.

I turned off sound in all my accounts but when windows boots up there's that horrible windows theme. Before when I turned off the sound in personalize that stopped the horrible windows theme when booting up. Do I need to do anything more?

I use mostly my general account and it won't allow me to access temp under run so I can delete temp files. How can I fix this, please?

I also had problems at first updating windows in the general account - it wouldn't allow me to; however, all of a sudden it's working, and I always update it in the general account.

In the past I had the document file in the left side of my task bar by the icons for browsers, etc. Now, I can't get it there, just on the right side as a tool bar - but I don't like it there or the way it's displayed there. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Also, in the general account (where I do most things) I ca... Read more

You need to install the graphics drivers for your videocard.

If it`s onboard graphics then you can get these from your mobo manufacturers website.

If it`s a separate graphics card then you will need to visit your graphics card manufacturers site.

The hard drive failed in our Dell desktop that I had upgraded to Win 8. I had done a clean install, and it had the Windows Reserved Partition of 350 MB. I had made a Windows Image to an external hard drive, so after I put a new hard drive in to replaced the failed drive, I restored that image. I was surprised to see that after the restoration, the Windows Reserved Partition is not there.

I think that when you make the image you need to tell it to image the WRP, and I guess I could have forgotten. But then why would it even be able to boot now?

Any ideas?

Thanks

My Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit OS got messed up so I restored the original image I made from DriveImage XML successfully. Now when my PC boots, I get the mobo splash screen and then just a cursor. When I put my Win 7 install disk in I can "press any key" to boot from it and the DVD goes right to where I can repair my installation. It sees my partition and when I use the cmd prompt using diskpart, I can see that the win 7 volume is c:\, active, and all my files are in the right spot. However when I look at the volume numbers, my c:\ is volume 2 and my DVD drives are volumes 1 & 2. So how do I change my c:\ drive to volume 0? I've read that this is how you set the c:\ to boot properly. If I'm wrong please correct me.

The Win 7 drive is a WD 500gb IDE. When I put this drive into any other PC, it does the same thing. Mobo splash or POST screen then just a cursor. I can't enter Safe Mode or anything except to put a disc in the DVD drive and boot from it. I tried fiddling with my mobo settings and they are normal. If I take my Win 7 drive out and put it as a slave or as a USB external drive, I can see everything and do whatever with the files.

A:Restored DriveImage XML, Win 7 won't boot

Just a guess, but it sounds like you may have originally made an image of just your C drive and didn't include the master boot record. If you have a Windows 7 installation DVD, you can boot to it and use the Startup Repair tool under System Recovery options.

I used the restore cds included with the computer and noticed that program was read from drive R (didn't know it had a drive R). So I'm guessing that this would be a partition where the "original programs" are located rather than providing cds?

I also have a new copy of XP, complete, not just the upgrade. What would I need to do to clean this machine and install the full XP? Do I have to keep the partition where the old programs are? I don't want to use any of the original programs if that makes a difference.

Thanks.

Welcome mama4cats to BC.You have everything you need. XP will ask you to create an NTFS or FAT32 partition. It will give you the chance to delete all partition (which I recommend) and setup new one(s). Depending on the size of your hard drive I would recommend 2 partitions. The first (C:\) partition for XP and the programs, and the second (D:\) partition for files, pictures,... This would make formatting and reinstalling XP later less of a job. You would be less concerned with loosing your creative data. Once the partition is created XP will format the drive and the install will proceed. If you have question just ask. If you would not mind post the specs about you computer so we can get you more specific advice.Good luck.

I'm using Acronis Backup and Recovery to replace 8 old computers with new ones.

The new computers are a different make than the old ones. I know a lot of people say this can't be done, so I'll get this out of the way first. I'm using Acronis' Universal Restore feature which is designed to handle different HALs and storage drivers. I have replaced 6 of the computers and this works very well.

Now I have an image that won't boot. I can take another image from a different computer, but the same make and model, and it does boot. So it isn't a hardware issue.

There is no error message and Windows does not start. There is just a black screen with a cursor in the top left corner.

Hi folks

Can anybody help me with a tricky installation problem I have?

I'm trying to set up a machine so that it can allow me to verify different backups I've made - the idea being that I use the backup and restore program installed in the Windows installation on the first partition to do a test restore of various backups into the unallocated space on the hard drive, with the aim of ending up with a dual boot or triple boot system, with one or more Windows XP partitions restored into the unallocated space from an external drive. The backup program maintains that it can reconfigure Windows to run on the new machine.

Everything appears in order for the first restore process into the second partitition. I can carry out a new install of Win XP into a new second partition, then restore a backup which includes the Win installation from a source computer elsewhere on the network, and then modify the restored OS using the backup program to boot on the new computer. In other words creating a dual boot computer by restoring the Win installation from the other computer.

The problem I have concerns the creation of a third partition and installation on top of this system, using the same process, but to make a triple boot system by restoring the Win installation from a different computer. I get a show stopper problem almost straightaway when running the Win XP3 install from my slipstreamed boot CD, in that although I can create a third partition, and commence the first part of... A:wheres my restored data?

If the restore ran properly, the restored files and folders should be in the same places they were when you did the backup. It sounds like either there was a problem with the backup or there is a problem with the restore. Let's make sure you're doing things correctly before assuming there is some problem with the system or the hardware or the backup file - which we will address later if this doesn't help. The following should help:

Here's an article on the restore procedure: http://www.vista4beginners.com/How-to-restore-files just to make sure you're doing it right. It's a selective restore of a full or selective backup (not a complete restore of a complete backup) - but since you did a full backup it matches your process closer than a complete restore would.

Here's another excellent tutorial on the Restore process: Restore Backup Files.

Here's an article on how to use Advanced Restore (when normal restore doesn't work): http://www.mayankraichura.com/post/2009/08/06/Avdvanced-Restore-via-Windows-Vista-Backup-and-Restore-Center.aspx.

Please help, I screwed up! Two months ago I imaged my hard drive and today I messed up while deleting a partition. I had set up a dual boot Windows 7 and Linux (a couple of years ago) but I really never used Linux. Today I removed a partition from my hard drive but I accidentally removed the Linux partition and not the one that I thought. When I restarted I got a Grub message and I could not boot my computer. I tried to fix it but I know so little about Linux that I couldn't get it to boot to anything. I bought a new hard drive and restored my computer from the image, but now all my files are two months old. My question: Can I take my user file off my old drive and put it in my new drive in place of the older user file that's there now?

Thank you,

When I transfer using windows explorer I see the m4p files tranferring across by folder name and extension but I can't find them by folder name or extension on either drive in explorer. ARGHHHH

I see 10GB of data on both disks but can only read about 2GB (all ther other files jpg, doc, etc). The music related files and folders cannot be read.

How can I find them so I can play them again.

A:OS deleted and restored during updates

If I understand your question, you are mostly concerned about the lost documents, since everything else is working again. To get your stuff back, download the free shadow explorer.
ShadowExplorer.com - About
When a computer is in the process of performing a function, and the power is shut off, you can lose everything that is in the file. That is what happened to you

A:Restored DriveImage XML, Win 7 won't boot

I'm not entirely certain this is the case with 7 but previously the volume was assigned depending on where it was plugged into the motherboard.
If I had to guess I would say your dvd drives are IDE and the Hard disk is SATA.
I have the same issue with my box. It doesn't seem to prevent it from booting at all.

Try just booting with the win 7 disc in and not hitting anything and see if windows loads then. If so it's a motherboard setting issue.

My computer was self built about 2 years now. Never a problem. I have always, with this machine, used cloning for my back-up disaster recovery method. I keep 2 clone hard drives (a back-up and a spare). I clone the system every 2 weeks and rotate the drives. I replace the ?c? drive with a clone when an ?experiment goes wrorg?; this could be trial software or just monkeying with the OS. This has been a flawless method until the last time I relaced ?c? with a clone..

It booted just fine; then sometime (days) later on a reboot I noticed there was no bios post or the screen to f2 to change or confiure the bios if needed.

From a cold boot or re-start...the screen is dark for some seconds then the win log-in screen; the option, admin or me user, click user (i don?t use a password) , welcome screen and win loads quickly. Is rock stable an is up usually for 7-9 days; or when reboot is required.

Question....any ideas on how to get screen for bios configure restored....for example If needed to boot from cd or any other bios change? My win 7 is legit; as is all softwae or programs, no warez, no malware or virus detected or known.

Win 7 sp1
asus m5a99fx pro r2.0
16 gig ram
nvidia geforce gtx750
amd fx 6300 3500mhz

.

A:bios configure restored ?

Shutdown your PC and Boot again and constantly press Delete. This should bring you to the screen that has several different options for continuing, one of which is "Enable Last Good Configuration". Choose that and see if it gets things right for you. == I am guessing the Key is Delete. My PC is Custom Build with an Asus motherboard and it uses Delete, yours might be different, F8 if Delete doesn't work. == If you get nothing there I would try your other backup. Post back with how things go. Thanks,
