Windows XP places the wrong task pane in a folder

Q: Windows XP places the wrong task pane in a folder

My picture Folder now Lists the Wrong Task Pane. I believe Windows XP placed a customized music task pane in my pictures folder leaving me to only be able to arrange anything in the folder by artist, year, track, etc. I would like to know how to fix this for it is getting very frustrating

A: Windows XP places the wrong task pane in a folder

Hello kidhero99

Try this and see if it works for you.

1.Right-click the folder?s icon or, if you have the folder already open, in a blank space within the folder, and choose Properties from the pop-up menu.

2.Click the Customize tab.

3.Select the appropriate template from the Use This Folder Type As A Template drop-down list and click OK.

Hello, I have a friend who is starting to lose his sight, and is having trouble reading the text on the sidebar in Windows Explorer. Is there any way to increase the font displayed, other than decreasing the resolution?

Here is what I am referring to

Thanks!

-nka

A:Increase font size Windows Explorer Folder Task pane

Have you thought about increasing font size globally? Right click anywhere on the desktop, pick properties, then go to the appearances tab. For font size pick large or extra-large. You may have to reboot.
Also you can use the magnifier tool in Windows to see parts of the screen. Go to start, program, accessories, accessiblity, magnifier. If your friend ends up using it often, go to that same spot in the start menu, right click on magnifier and pick copy. Then go to the desktop, right click, and pick paste.

P.S: Just a technicality: your screenshot shows the "common tasks bar" aka "places bar". The "Windows sidebar" is actually a feature in Windows Vista, which you can see here http://tech2.in.com/media/images/img...ta_sidebar.jpg (it's on the right; it's transparent, so you can't see it, but it's definitely a bar).

My search term skills are failing me. I hope someone has the time to help me or send me in the right direction.

I have XP SP2

I discovered after using "classic folder view" for a while and switching back to the task pane that a number of windows are wrongly displayed. I found a possible answer to the task pane template problem at;

http://computers.douglasthrift.net/winxpfaq/
Special Folders

A number of my problems were not addressed in the help.
------------------

Firstly, my C drive is one of the affected folders.

None of my affected folders has a "customize" option in "properties". They are all in my personal folder rather than "all users" so I don't know if the directions still strictly apply to me.

With many of the folders in question, when I add "\desktop.ini" and hit enter I'm asked whether I want to connect to the internet or work offline. I'm guessing, but I may have tried the desktop.ini trick while online(?). I have no idea how to deal with this.

-------------------
I have hardly any experience with command prompt and have no confidence in my ability to back out of a fix should I screw up. I do, however, have TuneUp Utilities 2006 which gives me a registry editor and a "Rescue Center" which supposedly allows me to roll back from mistakes (haven't tried it yet). Maybe this is an altenative avenue.

I'm sure I've left things out but, if someone choses to respond, maybe I... Read more

I meant to reply earlier...must have forgotten while attending to a spam post...but there is only one window on my systems.

There is the typically list of submenus to the left but that's not really a different pane, just a series of shortcuts for users in XP related to networking.

I'm a 5 day Win 8 new-bee leaning new stuff every day.
The latest thing to have me stumped is the Navigation Pane in explorer.
I don't want them all to look the same. I have folders on my desktop, in which all I want to see is the short cuts to apps. I went into View/Navigation Pane, and deselected Navigation Pane. I got the look I wanted, but it applied to all folders that I opened. Whenever I click on Windows Explorer, the Navigation pane was missing. If I restored it, it again applied to all folders. I am NOT clicking on Apply to All Folders in View/Options. So why can't I get what I want?

A:Windows Explorer Navigation Pane - What am I doing wrong?

Hello Jeff, and welcome to Eight Forums.

In File Explorer (renamed Windows Explorer), the navigation pane turn on or off setting is a universal setting for all folders and libraries windows. It can't be turned on or off for some and not others.

It was this way in Vista and Windows 7 as well.

Hello
I do not have a folder pane (a folder tree with the Desktop, my Computer, the Network) in Explorer any more.
This is a rather annoiing and difficult problem, and have searched several times for hour with NO solution for Vista.

I do not know exactly when this started, since I'm not normally using Windows Explorer that much. Now when I open the Explorer, the place where the Folder pane should be is totally blank, as seen below. (My Layout is set to "Navigation Pane")

I can see contents of folders in the Right pane and navigate through them, but can't see any folder hierarchy in the Left Folder-pane -- it's just totally blank as shown above.

Does anyone have a solution? I'd rather not re-install Vista...

PS: The problem seemed to exists in W9x and ME too Windows Explorer-Left Pane Empty - Tech Support Guy Forums and has a fix from MS, to delete a part of the registry, but this does not work for Vista.

Thanks a lot in Advance,
Ralfko

PS: I've read Brink's information on resetting Folder View settings and tried this to, but it did not help.

I like the aesthetic of Windows XP's Task Pane, and would like to have it on Windows 7. I've Googled for awhile, but can't find it. I'd like something that goes over the tree section like it does on XP, and has an toggle button like XP's "Explore" pane did so I can still access the tree. I'd like it to be smart like the Windows XP pane and change based on which type of folder I'm in/selected, and incorporate the details pane in it as well.

A:Replace Windows 7 Task Pane with Windows XP's

Use organize-layout navigation pane.

Then under folder options in control panel, check show all folders and automatically expand to current folder.

When I open a folder using the tree in the left pane the position of the selected folder change.
It's like the layout of the tree pane is not working fine.
Maybe they autoscroll in order to display all the child's folders but I don't like this.
When the folder i want to open is in the middle of the pane (vertically)
it moves often to the bottom and i can't even see the child's folder, and some time it move the opened folder to the top of the pane

I just would like to have the thing working as it's in XP. When we open a folder, this one don't move and the children appears under this one.

Do you understand the issue?

A:bad scroll on folder tree pane (in windows explorer)

Yes, this is one of those "WTF were they thinking" mistakes in the W7 file explorer

I can't understand why in the world they would scroll the left pane DOWN to hide exactly the very thing you are trying to look at :/ It should scroll up to either the top (if the child folder list is long) or up just far enough to show the entire child folder list.

I do not know of any way to fix it, it's a built in behavior of explorer which would have to be fixed by MS themselves...

In the navigation pane in Windows Explorer, there's a shortcut to the default "Downloads" folder.

I would like to make this all caps, in other words, rename it to "DOWNLOADS".

A simple request, but Windows refuses to do it.
How can I force this change via registry?
Thank you,

Hello,

I just noticed Win Explorer does not refresh the right pane as I navigate up/down a list of folders via arrow keys in the left pane. It used to make rapid visual read of folder contents possible. Can that feature be switched back on?

I've seen this reported elsewhere few years ago but I cannot find it on this site.

A:Windows Explorer right pane does not match left folder

Not sure if that's possible. Use the up or down button until you have highlighted the one you want. Then press Enter or Space to update the pane to the right. You use the left and right buttons to collapse/expand sub folders.

I find Space the best and fastest option since you use both hands. One to navigate and the other to refresh the right pane.

Hi to all! I can't believe I'm starting my third thread about Windows Live Mail within a month, but when you practically live in your mailing system, any kind of illogical behaviour quickly becomes an irrritant. And this forum seems a marvellous place to report these things.

This thread is about another of those instances where Live Mail appears to be designed to work the same way as Outlook Express, but actually has odd quirks that are illogically different. It's is about the view of the folder pane to the left of the application window.

In my system, under "Storage folders" I have created a number of "category" folders, some with several sub-folders in them. The purpose is to be able to archive incoming messages logically, pending use or deletion at some later time. Pretty standard, I would have thought.

To prevent the column of folders from stretching down to infinity, and to keep things looking as tidy as I can make them, I generally keep the sub-folders hidden by clicking the little arrow to the left of the heading folder, which collapses the view of any sub-folders within it. In Outlook Express (and much other software) the equivalent to the arrow was a plus sign for expanding the view and a minus for contracting it. So far so good!

What I am finding extremely annoying is this. Suppose you have a batch of new email messages that you have just downloaded, and their headings are in view in the main list of emails, and you want to drag some ... Read more

A:Windows Live Mail folder pane jumps to top of column

I'm having exactly same problem. Live mail don't listen as usual. If a few of us are saying it on here, thousands of others are having same problem.
Also why do I have to have a username to log on here? I can't remember it when I come in again in a years time

There were some things in Windows 10 that I couldn't live with so I re-loaded Windows 7. After I did this my Windows Live Mail storage folders are not showing.

I searched for .eml files to see where they resided.

Which in Windows Live Mail when I access Options>Email>Advanced>Maintenance>Store Folder>Change....and enter in what I presume to be the correct folder based on my search...I get a message that the file is empty.

According to the search, the folders has thousands of emails.

I'm stumped.

This one is getting really annoying. I have noticed that sometimes when using Windows Explorer, if I rename a folder, the right hand pane shows the correct (new) folder name, but the left hand pane still displays the old folder name.

As a matter of fact, even if I right click on the folder name on the left hand pane, and choose "Rename", and then rename it there, when I hit Enter to save the name change, the folder name on the left (that was just highlighted and changed) will revert back to the original name....but the name in the right hand pane will show the change.

For some reason, it just doesn't seem to want to update the view in the left hand pane. And then, to top it off, after some undetermined amount of time, the left hand pane will "refresh" to show the new folder name, but it will STILL show the old folder in the list as well. If I right-click the parent folder and choose "Open in New Window", the view is correct, but the original window still shows the old folder names.

This may only happen after my Explorer windows (I usually have 4 or 5 up) have been open for a long time, as I tried to reproduce with new windows and the behavior is normal (left hand pane updates view immediately).

I've reported it already, but just curious if anyone else has experienced this odd behavior.

A:Windows Explorer left-pane not showing changes to folder names

Hi CorrsFan

I think this is just a part of it being a Beta still. I have tried to delete the HomeGroup section, and while it goes for awhile as soon as it refreshes it's back. Just like some sections of the Registry is locked out and some permissions can't be changed, these things will all be sorted out by RC1. Renaming any system item is locked down in the registry and Left (Navigation) Pane items seem to be a part of this lockout.

Make sure to send MS Feedback on this so they know what works and doesn't.

Obviously XP should not be looking for 'Defrag.exe' in the File Cache of Flash Player. I have checked the registry settings for Defrag, and as best I can see they are fine -

As a final observation I have noticed that Defrag loads, and operates fine despite the message at startup.

If anybody has any advice concerning how to fix this it will be greatly appreciated. Please don't suggest upgrading from XP, as I am using it for specific programs (that will not run elsewhere!).

Hey guys - question...

I had a systems burp over last weekend - my OS (XP Home) decided it didn't like me and crashed requiring a complete reload to make it functional again. But before I wiped my HD, I made an image copy of it so that important information wasn't lost. I managed to recover everything of major value to me before the rebuild - except...

How in blazes do I get my old email back? I'm running Outlook 2002 Enterprise Edition (Which I believe may have actually caused the crash, as it happened while needing to do a hard shut down. I had surfing some web sites, and unfortunately found one that was causing all sorts of issues that required that operation - Outlook wasn't happy that I was shutting it down that way and told me so - next thing I know, I'm getting the old Windows Opening Screen Blink - ouch!) In the image files, I can find what looks like the old Outlook files, but I certainly don't see anything saying 'Inbox' or anything. Any clues on where to look?

Thanks,

My Network Places list is inaccurate. When I go to Network Places, I see PC's that are no longer on my network and I don't see other pc's that are connected. I am using WinXP Home. If I vew Network Places from one of the other WinXP pc's, I get a different views. See network_places_Den and network_places_Elyse pics attached. Network Places from one of the other WinXP pc's is different than the first two. The Den PC is wired, the Elyse PC is wireless and the 3rd PC is wired.

If I view the workgroup pc's, all are shown correctly. If I view Network Places from a Vista PC, the view is correct. I see the correct pc's and the folders are correct if I select a PC to view.

My network is comprised of a AirLink101 Wireless router with 3 of the pc's directly connected to it. I also have a Netgear FS105 5 port switch with 3 pc's connected to it and it is connected to the AirLink101. Two of the pc's are wireless. One is WinXP (Elyse attached) and the other is Vista.

This appears to be a WinXP issue.

I would appreciate any insight on this anomaly. For what it is worth, I rebooted the pc's before I took these screen shots.

Shortcuts are usually created only when you open or save a file using a UNC path (\\Server\Share\Filename) unless you've set a policy to prevent their creation.
So it won't show the same locations that you see on other PCs unless you've actually opened or saved a file from those same locations using a UNC path. If you map a drive to a share, shortcuts are not created for that location.

See the NoRecentDocsNetHood entry in this KB article (about 1/2 way down):
Policy settings for the Start menu in Windows XP

You can delete the ones you no longer want, they are not automatically deleted.
You can add one using the Add a network place link on the left.

I understand that in XP Home when opening My Computer or an explorer window, the task pane should be shown on the left hand side by default. By clicking the "folders" button on top you can toggle from folders on the left to the task pane on the left. My problem is that on my computer, it is the opposite. The folders view is the default and I have to click the "folders" button to toggle to the task pane. It is really annoying. Now, I have tried to set it to the task pane and then go to tools/folder options/view/ folder views and click apply to all folders but that does not work. Any suggestions on how to get the task pane back as the default?

Hi,

At work we have Compaq D510 short forms with Windows XP Pro, SP3. One of my coworkers wants to be able to e-mail pictures from her 'My Pictures' folder by selecting the files and then clicking the 'email this file' in the Common Task Pane, when you do this Outlook Express comes up with the attached files but it won't send. It says it cant because of a socket error 11001 and that it cant find the SMTP server. I am thinking I need to reset the File properties in Tools>Folder Options >File types but I am not sure which one Explorer is invoking to Send Mail, I have looked in Google, no luck yet. My machine does this just fine but uses MS Outlook 2007 , which is why I think a File Type association is goofed up.

Thanks.

PS I have tried resetting the common task pain in My Computer >Properties.

When I open an instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane show little or nothing (no drives, folders, etc.). Also the preview pane does not show a preview for any selected files (See Capture1.JPG).
If I open a second (or higher) instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane functions properly (the preview still does not show) (See Capture2.JPG).
I have previews set to show (See Capture3.JPG).
Also occasionally, the file icons will be blank instead of showing the file type specific icon. When this happens, the address bar also seems to take a long time to load. The load bar will stop before reaching the end and won't finish (See Capture4.JPG).

Does anyone know what is going on or how to fix this?

FYI I am running 64 bit Windows 7 Pro.

Try Explorer++ and see if you get the same problem.

Need to enable "Folders" view.
If it works then you can rule out problems with system files and it's probably a buggy shell extension.

A client came to me yesterday with a printing problem. Whenever she prints an excel document which contains underlined words, the underlines get printed ABOVE the words, instead of underneath them as shown on the screen. I found that I could get the underlines to print properly if I went into the printer's advanced options and disabled "Printer Optimization". However, this setting doesn't stay disabled by default, and anytime she wants to print a document containing underlines she has to go into the options as I did, and disable the setting.

This problem occurs on any machine she is logged into, but other users can print fine to the same printer.

Anyone have any ideas? Or, does anyone know how to keep "Printer Optimization" turned off by default?

I want to control the display of the task pane in Publisher 2007 from the View menu. In earlier versions (I have been using Publisher 2002), unchecking the Task Pane item from the View menu prevents it from displaying when opening Publisher.

That does not work in the 2007 version. I have unchecked the item from the View menu, but if I close and then reopen the file, the task pane is displayed. I have looked under the Tools/Options, but there is no reference to the task pane. I have looked under Tools/Customize, but that only affects the toolbar, as does right clicking on the task pane itself.

It seems that display of the task pane is a default that cannot be changed, except while a file is open.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to change that default?

I have searched this forum, the Microsoft knowledgebase, and the Microsoft Publisher "Discussion Group," all without success.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 with a 1.4 Ghz Pentium processor, 2 GB of RAM, and Win XP/Pro SP 2.

I think you're stuck with it unless you want to use Visual Studio 2005 (SE) and create an add-in for it, which is, to say the least, quite a bit of work.

I purchased software that integrates into Excel and makes use of the custom task pane. Unfortunately, the software doesn't give the option to hide the custom task pane, which would be really useful. I have pulled the .dll specific to the task pane and referenced it in my vb 2008 project, but am pretty new to programming and was wondering if there was a way to write code to hide the custom task pane then make it visible again when needed. I can see the visible property in the .dll but am not sure how to set it up so that it works or if it's even possible. Can someone please help?

Go down to the shellex entry and left click the + sign

Look at the ExtShellFolderViews and highlight the entry under that

In the right window, you will see an entry for PersistMoniker.

When Windows appeared again, it was much smaller on screen surrounded by black. There was just a blue background with a windows logo. No start menu, task bar, nothing! I managed to right click the screen and chanye the resolution so that the background now fills the screen. Internet Explorer no longer seems to exist. How do I get this to look like Windows 7 please?

Okay. From what it sounds like, your explorer.exe is no longer running. Try this.

    1. Use the keyboard shortcut 'CTRL' + 'SHIFT' + 'ESC' to open up task manager.

    2. Using the menus up top, go to File > 'New Task (Run)'.

    3. Enter 'explorer' into the box, and click 'OK'.

    Best of luck!

I have a Windows 7 Ultimate dual booting with Windows 8 Consumer Preview on a Dell XPS 410. When I bring up Windows Explorer on the Desktop app, I would like to add several folders to the "Favorites" section of the navigation pane on the left side of the window, as I have done in Windows 7. However, I don't seem to be able to do it. I have tried dragging the folder in the right pane onto the Favorites link, as I do in Windows 7, but nothing happens; the folder is not added to the list (which, by the way, is empty.) I have also tried navigating to the folder I want to add to Favorites and then right clicking the Favorites link and selecting the option from the context menu of "add current location to favorites", but again nothing happens.

On the off chance that it might be a corrupted system file, I just finished doing a System File Checker with the SCANNOW option, but no problem was detected by SFC.

I wonder if this is a bug in the Consumer Preview? Has anybody else encountered this problem? I also would like suggestions for what else to try to correct the problem, if it seems to be a problem with my system but nobody else's...

I seem to have woken up in a nightmare world where this is no-longer possible on my copy of Word (2000).

Note: Reveal Formatting is a specific option that opens a task pane (like view document map) but what it shows is all the formatting such as line spacing font etc.. it also shows style content as found in templates or created manually.

I am absolutly positive that I have used this function before at the this computer with this copy of word and in fact the same document that I am working with now but the option no-longer appears in my menu.

I've tried Shift-F1 but I only get a little bubble telling me the style and formatting of the text I clicked on. I've tried resetting the toolbars and menus and I've spent a lot of time googling to find out that this feature was apparently introduced in the 2002 version...

    Hi,

I think someone copied a file from my laptop onto their USB stick while I was at work. I got home and started to work on the file, then when I pressed save it said 'cannot find location, please insert removable storage device into drive d' (or something like that) so I 'saved as' in another location, then checked my 'recent places' folder. Sure enough there was evidence of a removable disk being modified on my laptop whilst I was at work. I confided this to my house mate, checked my laptop again later that night and it had been deleted from the recent places folder. I now want to confront that person about what happened as it is now obvious to me that they had copied my file, but wondered if there's any way I can get the evidence back. I have tried the undo button, but to no avail. This happened on Tuesday (8th). Can anybody help me?

    Thanks

How did you access it in the first place? if it was moved you wouldn't have been able to opened it.

But it does seem fishy though that it would disappear like that. Check the recycling bin for the file. There are some 'undelete' programs but the data may have already been removed.

I?m using the Customize features in the Folder Properties in Windows 7. I have a whole lot of images of old cars arranged in folders by manufacturer. Each folder image is the manufacturer?s logo, which looks very cool. All very well and good. But now once in a while when I make a new folder, rename it, or sometimes just move it, one of those images will show up on the icon of the new folder! It can be any of them at random. If I understand it correctly, the folder icons show the two most recently modified images as part of their thumbnails.

The easiest way to get around this is to take you favourite picture and save it as "folder.jpg"

    1) The "Normal" thumbnail view of a folder:

    2) Make a copy of the image you want to use, and rename it to "folder"

    3) The thumbnail view of a folder containing an image named "folder.jpg"

Hopefully I?m in the most appropriate location for this inquiry.

In my pc navigation pane for my main pc it goes Desktop, then the Libraries (Documents, Downloads, etc), Homegroup, Computer (with the listed drives), then last Network. In my secondary pc between Homegroup and Computer it has ?Admin? with many of the same Library menus along with AppData. I would really like to get rid of this extra file location. It used to also have a download location that was a pain and I changed the paths for that but I would still like to get rid of it totally. I was also able to delete some other things that were empty. I think this must be something the previous owner set up as I don?t think I have ever seen one set up like this.

Not sure but for one thing it appears the AppData in that Admin listing is linked to the User AppData files. I certainly don?t want to delete it if I can?t and cause a mess, but I would really like to clean things up. There is enough confusion and potential problems as it is. Anyone know how to do this? I think this may be the default location for AppData so a path may have to be changed or maybe this is some kind of shared folders situation that needs to be undone. I can make a backup of the AppData files in case deleting it needs to be reversed. Or maybe if this is not really a secondary location using up hard drive space there is a way to hide this listing. Thanks.

Hello Fisgard, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I'm not sure, but it sounds like you may have Show all folders turned on for the navigation pane. Double check using the tutorial below to make sure it's turned off to see if that is what the issue is.

Hi basically my original error was something to do with the msiexec.exe file. I kept getting a message saying i couldnt install so i tried fixing this following microsofts advice:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886630/en-us

They told me to change the file extensions of 3 files so that windows will recreate them. They were:

    • Msi.dll
    • Msihnd.dll
    • Msiexec.exe

They didnt recreate automatically so i deviated from the help guide and moved those files onto the desktop. I then proceeded to restart.

The computer boots up fine and logs into my user but only my wallpaper picture appears. No files no toolbars. Basically i can't do anything except ctrl alt dlt.

So i went into safe mode put the files back into system32. Im not completely sure if they were originally there.

So could someone using windows XP sp2 please check whether those 3 files are in the right place. You just have to search msi in the windows folder. since they all start with that.

    Thanks

    Hi,
Thanks for the help in advance.

I have a folder (actually many) that give the wrong size in MB. Right clicking on a folder and selecting properties pops up a dialog that has the size listed as 11.5MB (12,163,992 bytes). Last I checked 12,163,992 bytes = 11.6MB. Why does windows report an inconsistent size.

I need to understand where windows got the 11.5MB from.
    Thanks

PS I was going to upload a screenshot of the property dialog but could not figure out how to insert a picture into this forum.

This is on my mom's laptop. It has a fresh Win 7 install on it about four or five months old. It has very little 3rd party software installed on it. Avast, Office 2007, Firefox, Irfanview, and her HP printer/scanner driver are about all I can think of.

A couple of weeks ago she created a new folder one level below her "Documents" library (ex. Documents\Projects\Foo) for a project she's working on. It consists mainly of a couple of Word documents and 150 or so photographs. She had me looking at something tangentially related that turned out to be user error.

But, while looking at that, I noticed something very odd. When navigating to this new work folder in Explorer via the Documents library shortcut in the Navigation Pane, or, when drilling down through the C: drive in the pane, her Foo folder is not visible. But, it shows up in Recent Places.

When entering the Foo folder from Recent Places and then clicking on Projects in the Address Bar to navigate up to the Projects folder, the Foo folder is visible. But, when I navigate to that same Projects folder any other way, I don't see Foo.

I do see all of the other files in the Projects folder. To double-check that I was looking at the same Projects folder I dragged a file to make a copy and then looked at the folder from both directions. That copy showed up both times. So, it's the same Projects folder.

I can't figure out how this is even possible. It should either be always visible or never visible. I ... Read more

Hi - first-time poster looking for help (Googling did not turn up the answer):

I have numerous clients whose info I keep in folders / subfolders with a set naming convention. As a result, my Recent Places list shows many (sub)folders all with the same name, which isn't very helpful. Is there a way I can include the path to the folders in the Recent Place list to differentiate them? It would greatly increase my productivity! (BTW, I've tried using the folder columns available by right-clicking on the column names in Recent Places - both Folder path and Path return only C:\Users\[username]\App_Data\Roaming... (i.e. the location of the shortcut) vs. the actual path to the true folder).

Hello, i have this little issue. I use a custom made software which writes logs to certain directory. The logs are not needed for the software to work, however neither I or someone else can modify the software, but i would like to prevent it from creating logs. The logs are made in .txt . Oh and software/machine are/must be running with admin privileges (UAC is disabled).
I tried locking the folder with cacls foldertolock /e /p everyone:n , after doing this i cannot access it via explorer, but the logs keep getting saved in that folder.
I also tried adding +r attribute to the folder, but it didn't affect it in any way.

Any other things i could try? I would prefer that this could be made remotely via cmd/registry/whatever.

Now the location (one of three computers on the network) does not show up in My Network Places. It's in the Send To folder, and I can't move it back, either by dragging or cutting and pasting. Hello Asdf123,

That's what the Favorites folder is for, but I suppose that you could create and use a Download Library instead to accomplish this. Other than this, it's already added to at the C:\Users\(user-name)\Downloads location, but you have to open and expand your way down to that location under the Computer group in the navigation pane.

I need to create a Desktop folder on my new Win 7 Home Premium 64 Bit machine that, at its most simplest, would have just shortcut Icons. No preview pane, no menu bars, and especially, no Navigation pane.

I do know how to show/hide the Navigation pane. It appears that it is not possible to hide the Navigation pane in only one specific folder.

I do not want to change the view of Any Other Folders! I wish, for example, to have the Navigation pane remain visible in other folders.

It appears to me that Windows 7 locks us out of being able to completely customize individual folders.

Am I missing some basic understanding?

Are there third party apps to create a simple desktop folder with ability to select the view (i.e. Large Icons, Details)?

    Hi al4x,

The closest I got with adding the desktop icon to the side pane is you can add the desktop Icon by clicking the Favorites arrow.(it might be already there). If you don't have any favorites or the arrow is not there you can add the Desktop Icon to it by Clicking and holding the icon and drag it to the favorites tab..

I have not been able to figure out if you can just add an icon anywhere in the side pane my guess in no..

And I have not found a way to change the icons for the libraries..(I don't think you can)

    Hi All!

Growing quite frustrated trying to remove the Navigation Pane from some, but not all, folder views.

I'm old fashioned and like to launch programs by clicking on icons on the desktop. I know there are "better" , newer ways to accomplish this, but each of us is an expert on what we want. I've already heard all the arguments about just "relaxing" to the new Windows 7 paradigm, enjoy the "new car smell" ,etc. and I reject them, so please don't reiterate them again.

I also like an uncluttered desktop. My solution since way back in the Win2K days has been to create folders on the desktop with names appropriate to the icons they contain. In XP I could customize each folder's view to have no URL bar, no menus, no toolbars - in other words, just a "box" that held icons. This customization did not effect other explorer.exe windows (typically popped-up via the Windows-e key combo) which would have the full URL bar, menus, navigation pane on the left, etc.

In Windows 7, it seems as if any settings that I apply to an individual folder view apply to all explorer.exe windows. I've already tried the various folder types such as pictures, general, etc. , but no matter what I do, if I remove the Navigation pane from a folder, it removes it from all.

I'm willing to hack as deeply as needed to correct this annoying behavior. I've already spent (wasted?) a full man-day (24 hours in front of the computer over a period of 6 days) struggling wi... Read more

A:Remove Navigation Pane from some folder views?

    Hi Again;

Man, this is really driving me nuts! I just can't bring myself to belive that the designers of Windows 7 would provide no mechanism for customizing an individual folder view. It seems insane to presume that the view for one folder would be "perfect" for all folders. If it really is designed this way it represents a huge FAIL.

Any insight at all would be most welcome.

    Hi,
    I experience this problem in W7 32bit:
Sometimes when I want to delete a folder, Windows doesnt delete the folder I selected, but the PARENT folder, causing a lot of data loss. I coudn't find anything about this issue on the web.

Today I accidentally removed 4 GB of data in this way! I was able to recreate the problem and make a screenshot of it.

You can see I selected a folder called "buroblad" but windows asks me if I want to delete the parent folder called "pc".

Anyone on how this happens, solutions?

A:Windows deletes wrong folder (parent directory)

You are dealing with different conditions:
Item that has focus (an area or item that can have an action completed)
State of an item (such as selected/not selected)
Visual indicator of an item state (selected) but the item does not have focus

These are NOT the same as focus trumps non-focused state. Requested actions (such as DELETE) are applied to an item that has focus not the non-focus item to which you set the state (selected). To complete the action you wanted, the desired item (subfolder with state = selected) must also have focus.

To make it even more interesting, it is actually the Windows Explorer pane that receives the focus and you set the state (select) of the item within the pane on which you can apply an action (such as DELETE). In Windows Explorer the left navigation pane can have only one item selected but the right list pane can have one or more items selected.

In your example, you must have:

    1. Selected (clicked on) the subfolder selection check box (in the right list pane)focus is set to the list pane (right pane) and
state (selected) is set to your subfolder and
the visual indicator (check mark) shows the selected state
    2. Then you moved the cursor to and clicked on the parent folder (in the left navigation pane)this changed the focus and state to the parent folder in the navigation pane
however, the state of your previous action remained as selected in the list pane (as shown by the check mark)
    3. You then requested the DELETE actionthe requested ... Read more

First, all of this is new. I've used Vista Ultimate flawlessly for a long time, nothing new has happened (no new programs) I swear this just showed up. I know people say that all the time, but really, I'm not computer illiterate and really, I didnt' change anything. I promise.

So, I keep my desktop clear and use the Desktop Shortcut toolbar (lower right hand, next to the notification area) to navigate to my programs. For as long as I can remember, when I click down there, I would see TWO shortcuts, the ONLY ONES on my desktop: 1. Shortcuts (I made this one, takes me to my shortcuts folder, where I put.. all my shortcuts), and 2. Recycle Bin.

Now, when I click down there, I see this:

I am trying to tidy up my hard drives and seem to have a lot of duplication, some intentionally as backups but others not. I had been using Ultra Explorer to do this as I could look at 2 or more drives at the same time in dual-pane view and it gave you folder sizes which Windows Explorer doesn't do. Unfortunately, when I viewed my music folder in Ultra Explorer it gives some strange results, saying there is no content in a folder when I know it is there and I can no longer trust it.

Please can anyone recommend software which shows the breakdown of files and folders and allows you to do this in dual-pane view. I have tried Folder View by MindGems but this doesn't seem to have a dual-pane view. I am running Vista.

Often, but not always, the navigation pane in file explorer makes quick up/down motions and in doing so collapses the folder tree in the Library section. As a result I cannot navigate in the left panel (navigation pane) of file explorer as I am not quick enough the click on a sub-folder before the tree collapses.
