Doing a screen capture of a home movie?

Q: Doing a screen capture of a home movie?

Can anyone tell me why it is no longer possible to do screen capture of home movies? I shot a few movies with my camera, played them on my PC and hit print screen, but when I open Paint and put the screen capture in, it shows a black screen if I close the actual movie I took the screen shot from.
I tried screen captures in KMPlayer, WMP and VLC Media player.

A: Doing a screen capture of a home movie?

Hi lewislink,

I believe the problem is the way videos are displayed. I tried the following solution and it worked fine in Windows Media Player and Media Player Classic under Windows 7. I'm pretty sure it used to work the same under XP.

- Download and install ScreenHunter Free.

- Star ScreenHunter and click Standby.

- When you wish to capture a screen, hit the F11 key. The movie display will pause.

- Drag a box over the part of the screen you wish to capture (or even the whole screen). Click OK when the 'Capture Complete' box is displayed.

- Paste into your graphics application - I use both Paint and IrfanView with 100% success.

After the first time, ScreenHunter is running in the background so F11 is all that you need to press to capture the next screen.

You need to turn off the use of overlays in your player. The setting should be in the video acceleration options of the player.

Here is a link for doing it in WMP:

Hi All,
I am having some serious difficulty trying to use any movie making software. I have 2 partitions with XP installed. One has SP2(C:/), the one I use predominately is SP3(D:/). I am using a sony vaio VGN-FJ77C_B.
The issue began when I tried to copy a DVD to my laptop a few weeks back. I have searched far, and wide for a solution to my problem.. I have updated drivers, as well as a bunch of different scans to find the issues, yet nothing is helping.
Upon starting "capture from video device" in Windows movie maker, the software freezes, and throws the error below:
Error code 1000007e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 f8875805, parameter3 eb9c7cb8, parameter4 eb9c79b4.
Often enough, it will shut down my laptop, and shows a blue screen error.
I have tried using the C:/ partition to see whether it is a hardware issue, and windows movie maker works fine.
Any help will be soooooooo appreciated!!
Cheers all, Lea

Cannot help you with individual frame captures since I do not use .mov files or QuickTime but here is a tip that will get you part way there by capturing the .mov itself. From there you would need a way to load and extract frames or convert to another format and then load and extract frames.

I am able to capture the movies form my JVC dv camcorder using the pixela image mixer ver 1.7 bundled with it. During capture the sound and vision are exactly as the live action when recorded. The problem is when playing back or burning a vcd to a CD, the audio is running twice as fast as the vision, with periodic silences to allow the audio and visual to finish at the same time. All equipment is new, I have firewire cable for capturing DV. All the action and sound is transferring perfectly. Only once captured and/or burned does the sound anomoly appear. Any help gratefully received

okay heres whats up. I have forgot my jvc software at home, and I need to do some editing on my camera (JVC MiniDV GR-D650US). However, I can't get it onto my laptop. I have an usb cable, an AV to Svideo cable, and a DV cable.

The usb is for still pictures. I tried the AV to Svideo cable but my laptop isn't responding to it. ( I am using window movie maker at the moment.) I do have Pinnacle studio v11 with me just haven't installed it yet. The laptop doesn't have a DV or Firewire port. Do I have to buy and expansion card with a firewire/dv port or is there some way that I can get the miniDV camera to use the AV cable? I seems to work fine transfering the data to a VCR.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

After getting my new DV camera I shot some video with it and I used Windows Movie Maker 2's video capture option to get the video onto my PC. I set the capture options to "other settings" and put it on what I thought was the highest quality "Video for local playback 2.1 Mbps", and then I uploaded the video. The problem is the 10 minute video file ended up being 128MB, and the quality of the video is very poor(small isn't bad but full screen looks terrible). What should I have put the quality of video on for it to look like what it does on the camera (uncompressed)? Or can Windows Movie Maker 2 not record uncompressed video like iMovie does?

Iv just purchased this easycap capture usb device and havnt a clue why it wont work? I got a hidden little camera in a clock (wireless) and also a wired night vision camera - hoping to plug these into this device and record both cameras at the same time. also i was wanting to add a further two cameras to this device next week when payday comes round again!
I put the disk in (Im a beginner by the way - but a quick learner if showed the way i think) - installed the driver and the software that came with it - then added the clock wireless camera - of the clock is a recieiver that has two wires connected - a white ended one (audio) and a yellow ended one.
On this usb device it has 4 yellow connecters and only one white one. so i plugd this clock receiver into the channel 3 yellow connecter and the white one into the corrisponding white conection on the usb thingy.
Anyway then i went to set up the other wired camera - which has the same one yellow and one white connecter coming off it - but as i could only connect the yellow cable to the usb easycap - it wouldnt wok???
When i unplugg the white cable from the clock receiver and put the white cable from the wired camera in it - then the wired camera work - and then gess what -----the little clock camera dusnt work ??
It seems as if you have to have both the yellow and white cables connected but how can i do this as there is only one white connection cable to this easycap thing??
Its drove me nuts.

I'm going to move this to the All other Software forum, since it is really a Windows Media Player, not an XP question; I will edit the topic also.

Hey Folks,
I have old home made VHS tapes with no camcorder available. Are 4-Head VCR's on the market to connect good DVD players? What kind of VCR do I buy? Do I buy Blu-Ray or just a regular DVD recorder? What components do you suggest to put together to copy and preserve my old tapes.

I want to buy this equipment at a fair price and what kind of components do yoy need to put all this together?

Is it better to buy a combo player or what do you suggest?

A:Converting Home-Movie VHS Tapes To DVD

The easiest way to do it is get a VHS/DVD recorder. Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMR...ef=sr_ob_9?s=tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1280757185&sr=1-9

You could probably find something a little cheaper, like one without a built-in tuner.

Hi all--

I just installed a PC in the living room and hooked it up to my TV. I've started to copy DVDs into the Videos Library. Each DVD has an appropriately named folder...

Is there any way to use a picture of the DVD cover to designate what's in the folder? I mean, can I use a .jpg of the Bullwinkle DVD cover as the icon for just the Bullwinkle movie folder and a .jpg of the Shrek cover for the Shrek movie folder, etc., etc...?

I'm open at this point to any suggestions to not only organize, but graphically represent a folders content.

As always, thanks for your help and insight.
EDIT: Hi all...I figured out how to implement a way to do this. Through use of Paint Shop Pro, IcoFX, and creating a shortcut, I can achieve what I wanted to. A pita, but it works. I'm still open to suggestions.

As a result, I have video of my daughter's first 6 weeks of life but no audio I have tried extracting the audio using WavePad Sound Editor and various other freeware. Windows XP.
I want to edit an Mpeg 'read only' dvd burnt with Nero, my son has deleted the files on his computer. Using Anydvd to remove 'read only' I copied the files to My videos but Windows Movie Maker can't find file, which was untitled. Renaming with various file extensions did not help. Using UltraISO, there is a file mycd.ISO in My Videos; and with SoftDisc 1.6, a file I managed to name, but none of the file names are acceptible.
So the original files are Mpeg but I now have ISO copies. This is a once only operation so I will not be looking to buy programmes.

A:Editing a 'read only' home movie

The only way I know of is to have a program that will capture the movie and encode it back to MPEG so that you can have it on your computer. You can download a program on a trial basis so you don't have to buy it. Go to the link stuck at the top of this forum (the one I did) and download U-Lead Disc Creator. That will capture from DVD and encode to MPEG.

Hello all!
Ever since I joined the HJT Training Program, I have been longing for a good screen capture program. Yes, I know I can use Shift+PrintScrn and paste it into paint, but when you make screenshots regularly, that is kind of a pain.

Another thing that would be nice would be video capture of the display, but in such a way that would be easy to dump on youtube.

The only program that I have found is FRAPS, which does much more than I need, and is $100, which I am not prepared to spend on a image capture program.

Oh, and I'm on Vista Ultimate 32Bit.

I am doing documentation for my Help Desk at work, and it would be helpful to be able to do some screen captures.

I know that Ctrl+Print Screen will capture the whole screen and that Alt+Print Screen will capture the active most forward window. Here is my problem:

Many of the screens I wish to capture involve right clicking or displaying a menu-item. It is very, very difficult to do Ctrl+Print Screen or Alt+Print Screen while holding and clicking with a mouse (my Print Screen key on this keyboard is way over above my numeric pad and I have small hands). Does anyone know of any shortcuts or ways to do this that don't involve me needing three hands?

(Please don't recommend freeware or shareware programs for me to use. Such things are not permissible on the company PCs and require approval for download and installation. While I can get such approval, I'd rather not have to jump through those hoops if it isn't 100% necessary. Also, being a small business, most of the freeware/shareware licenses require commercial purchase for commercial use anyway.)

A:Screen Capture Help

I don't get it TechGirl. Can't you get the menu, then when you have it, alt/printsceen? I'm not sure I understand your problem. Are you saying you have to hold a mouse button down? That's weird. Just display the menu with the mouse and turn loose of it, then alt/printscreen. Oops, shouldn't that be Ctrl/printscreen?

When pasting into a gmail "compose" a screenshot that I didn't take pasted, as if I took the screen shot and pasted it myself. I was trying to paste text I had just copied. It occured over and over for some time before retuning to normal paste. Most alarming is that the screenshot was of when KeePass was open and it was included in the screenshot although no passwords were visible. The two DDS files are attached.

You can use the Snipping tool:

Open the Snipping Tool.

Click Cancel but, don?t close the tool.

Next open the menu you want to capture.

With that menu open press Ctrl and Print Screen .

Then use the snipping tool like you normally would and click and drag over the menu you want to capture.

Those of you who have used some of my tutorials know that I like to make tutorials in videos. So I was wondering how I could do that in Windows8. There are two screen capture programs I usually use of which one worked perfectly. The other one had a little problem which I will try to clarify with the owner of the program.

Here is the . Watching it directly from there usually works better than watching it from the embedded screen and it allows you to run the video full screen which does not seem to work with the embedded link.

Here is the link to the screen capture program I used for those who want to try it: http://www.microsoft.com/expression/..._Overview.aspx

Nice, whs! That's is more than cool! Thanks!

Actually, the embedded screen works well, in fact, I am editing my post at this moment while I watch and listen to your video.

Screen capture software, such as what is built in with Windows of "snipping tool"....... what do you use and what do you like about it?

Free, opensource, paid, etc. Doesn't matter, explain why you like what you use.

Anyone aware of anything where you can CTRL + C and then CTRL + P into a Windows Explorer folder and it will create a PNG or JPG file and then you simply rename it?

A:Screen Capture - What do you use?

Windows + PrintScreen = full screen, Alt + PrintScreen = current window

Aside from that if I need something specific I'll just capture it all then crop it down after pasting it into Paint or Paint Shop Pro 7.04 'cause it's fast and I can do it in a few seconds start to finish. I know what the snipping tool is and I have honestly never used it, not once.

I can't imagine using a third party application just to do a screen capture when that functionality has been built-in for so long it's not even funny.

Hi,
Does anyone know of a reliable freeware to capture text off the screen?
I transferred PrtScn image to Acrobat 7 pro and tried to do OCR on the image (Document->Recognize text using OCR), but it tells me it cannot be done since it needs a minimum resolution of 144 dpi.
Thanks,

A:Screen capture with OCR

The only freeware OCR that I know of is SimpleOCR, but you get what you pay for, it's not very good. One that is fairly cheap ($30) and much better is On Screen OCR. You can download a 21 day free trial if you want to try it out. One that is very good but costs $50 is ABBYY ScanTo Office. The prices go up from there.

Hello,

First of all yes I did read the top thread and didn't find my specific problem in it... I didn't read it completely because I didn't understand a lot of it.

Here's my problem, my friends and I made a home video a few years ago in a high school video lab and got a disc of it, and now I want to save it to my computer into some type of video format. It doesn't really matter which because I can probably change it to a different format with some online freeware programs but I just want to take it from the disc to my computer.

How can I do this? I tried using movie maker, media player, realplayer, and sonic digitalmedia plus (you think I'd be able to do it with that, something I payed for, but no, the only things I can do is burn video from computer to disc). Ideas?

Thanks.

Aside from illegal and we can't help..
A retail DVD is 9+ Gigs in size... when it's copied to a 4.7 gig disc it is compressed...
Maybe your player can't read this compressed form.

Not an illegal copy, then....
I have found that if the disc is burned to fast, the last half turns out to be junk..
try a slower burn speed.

I've been getting good photo results snapping photos off my matte PC LCD screen using a Canon point-and-shoot camera set on macro. The colors are good and the results are clear but my friend tells me he uses capture to get photos off the screen. What exactly is that? Is it when you click "Save" and it is saved by the PC? I want to save it on an SD card so I can view it on my cameras' LCD screen without having to go to my PC. What exactly is "capture"? Thanks.

A:How to capture Screen Shots?

If you tap the "Print Screen" key on your keyboard, a screen capture of your entire desktop is copied to the Windows clipboard. If you hold down the "Alt" key and tap the "Print Screen" key, only the current active window will copy to the clipboard.

You can not paste directly from the clipboard to the SD card. You would first need to paste the clipboard contents into a suitable image editing program. You can then have the program save the file with the image anywhere you want.

EDIT: Certain programs may use an overlay method to display images and video on the desktop. These may show up as black boxes in the capture.

Hi all
I was just wondering if there was anyway of preventing people from capturing a screen image..

You can disable the mouse context menu (normally the right mouse click - or left if you've swapped the default mouse options) on an image to stop people from downloading it but I don't think you can prevent anybody from using the PRT SCR button or programs like snagit or the snipping tool to capture an image.

I'd like to do this since I want to issue some powerpoint lecture notes containing some pictures of propietary material which can be publicly viewed -- but I don't want these pics to be copied and possibly appear on other web sites.

Some type of internal "scambling" or encryption software would be great so that even if one did capture the screen via PRT SCR then on inserting the capture into another document it would just come out as garbled.

Any ideas anyone or is this just not possible.

(Of course the old fashioned way of actually taking a photo of the screen would always overcome any software scrambling / encryption or even using the screen capture on a Linux host machine running a Window Guest Virtual machine in "Windowed mode" - but I'm not worried about that type of attack - if people think of that type of "get around" then they are sophisticated enough to copy the documents anyway).

Cheers
jimbo

Hi, I've been using photoscape, a free program that edits photos for years and using it for screen captures. Well, I noticed that every time I tried to do a screen capture with it since yesterday the program would disappear from view, not get the screen capture and only be showing in the processes. I assumed there was something specifically wrong with the program after several attempts and having to end the process, as it was frozen. So, I uninstalled it and reinstalled it. Same problem. So, trying to screen cap a frozen frame on a streaming video I downloaded another program, another free program, to do it called screencapturer. Same prolem. Program disappears from view, no capture takes place. Exactly the same. So, I downloaded a firefox browser application that is meant to take screen captures. This time it worked, except it only gets the non-video portion of the page. The box or window with the video only shows up blacked out. I'm used to that happening with certain screen capture programs not getting the image in a video box but my tried and true capturer for the same purpose, the Photoscape, what could be causing that and the other program to be incapable of getting a cap of a video all of a sudden? Thanks for any input. I'm not away of any change to my system since the last time I tried to use the program for this either.

Ok, I've had it up to here with OBS.  It either doesn't record any video at all, only records a corner of the video, lags to hell and back any time there are any sudden movements in the game, or all of the above.

As far as the lag is concerned, I was told in a previous thread that my hard drive transfer speed might be the problem. But my hard drive can transfer up to 3.0GB/s! So that can't be the problem! Besides, I can record screen footage with camstudio no problem!

I want some screen capture software that meets the following criteria:

1. 100% totally free.
2. Records what happens on-screen. If the game automatically switches to full-screen, then that's what the software captures. If I can't see my taskbar or desktop, then I don't want the screen capture software recording it. No choppy framerate.
3. Records, frame-for-frame, exactly what I see on screen, at 60fps. If my character whip-pans, the screen capture shows a whip-pan.
4. It can record whatever I see on-screen, no matter what game or app I'm trying to capture. That's something that Shadowplay doesn't do.
5. Records mic and speakers ... together.
6. It's plug-and-play simple. All that bullcrap about sources and scenes ... why do I need any of that? All I want is to record what I see on-screen to a video file I can edit with VideoPad Video Editor. That's it. I don't need it to come with any extra features I'm not going to use. If I need any more features, I'll either get another app or I'll ... Read more

Back in the days of Windows 95-to-98 I tried several screen capure apps.  I remember the
computer magazines alway rated Techsmith Snagit as the best.  I guess a lot of readers
liked this app, but it was a disaster for me.  Nothing worked right, it was a mess.
My favorite was Print Screen Deluxe until Windows XP came along.  When I dragged the
crosshairs to take a rectangular screenshot the results were not good.  The image captured
was always shifted left, right, up, or down.  It never captured the image inside the crosshairs!
Instead of contacting the author or posting about this problem I just stopped using Print
Screen.
I've got a couple of freeware screenshot apps that are ok, but they don't work perfectly all

That's amazing, with hot keys we can get the windows picture easily on Mac PC, pressing and holding hot-key ?shift+command+4? there will be a ?+? on the screen, you can choose the windows you want to cut out by moving the mouse, pressing shift+command+3,you can catch the whole screen.

I have had a try with this way, great! I just find this new way yesterday, I can't help to showing here.
With Shortcut keys really can save much time on our computer work.

Often I will see a photo while searching the internet and want to save it. Lately I have been using an excellent program called MW-SNAP.

The problem is.... the screencapture of, lets say an image, is not quite as good as when I am viewing it on a webpage.

I have expierimented with various "save-as" settings and have always chosen the options for best quality and although the pictures aren't too bad... there is still some of what I call "banding". The colors appear somewhat like a gradient... and you can see the different shades of color in a graduated pattern.

Is there a way to save your screen-captures so they look just same as you see when viewing them on the web page without any "loss"?

Thanks in advance

DAVID

Anybody know a good one?   Firefox lists lots of them but they never say how to use them so they are useless?   I used to have a good one but then it became a problem with unwanted stuff showing up?   Why do they have all these add ons with no way to know how to use them?

A:Screen Capture for Firefox

Why do they have all these add ons with no way to know how to use them? This is one of the major reasons I don't use very many browser based applications. Unless it is specific to that browser. I prefer stand alone apps.I like Greenshot: http://getgreenshot.orgAndSharex: https://getsharex.comUse with any browser or without a browser to manipulate existing images on the computer.

I am looking for a good screen capture program so I can record video of the desktop.

Unlike many people who need something like this I need specifics.

1. Must be able to capture a full 1920x1080 display at a decent frame rate preferably 60 fps.

2. Must also be able to capture video in the highest possible quality.

3. Must be able to record "what you hear".

I want to record some tutorials for photoshop and other adobe apps and some for video editing software like sony vegas. This calls for the highest quality I can get really because the vids will be offered in full HD. I need the audio for the obvious reasons.

So far I have tried fraps with monitor aero desktop enabled and a variety of different setting. While it does capture in awesome quality it does not do it with a good frame rate. I get the choppiest video you have ever seen. It also has issues with 2 displays enabled. I only want to capture one not both and I don't want to disable one to do so.

I also tried snagit 10. Also good quality but poor results. Much like fraps it is resulting in choppy video. It is able to capture one full display by clicking on that region before recording which is great if it would work right.

I know this machine has the horsepower to do this so it is not a matter of not having the brute strength. It could be a matter of me not knowing what settings to use though. I wouldn't rule out the possibility that I just don't know what I am doing since I never tried actively capturin... Read more

A:Screen Capture (Video)

Double Post FTW! LOL actually being the self help kind of guy I am I managed to solve this before I got a reply. I wanted to share my solution in case anyone else sees this and needs the same thing I did.

Camtasia which I have used years ago back on version 5 has actually come a long long ways. I am not beyond giving any particular software multiple chances to impress me.

Going back to camtasia this is what I found. Within less time than it takes to instal the program you can also learn basically everything you need to know about it. In under 1 minute I was able to make a test recording and play it back with outstanding results.

I was impressed by the way the application was able to recognize my main display the one i want to record on that is. Select it and also place the recording controls exactly where I would have placed them in the bottom corner of the secondary display. Seriously they thought of everything you would need.

I was impressed by how easy it was to output my video exactly the way I want it and with so little effort I was unsure it would get everything right. It did and it did it in record time at that.

You really couldn't ask for more from a piece of software. It is that damned easy and fast to use. I am totally happy with this and I imagine others would be also.

My test recording was absolute quality and with perfect speed. No loss of quality full 1080 HD. The resulting file is light for full HD as well. You can also do ALL of your edits within the app... Read more
