Where is that downloaded file?

Q: Where is that downloaded file?

Can I ask a really stupid question?
It's about locating downloaded files. Not the ones where I select save and then select a folder but the ones which don't offer that. For example right now Java is downloading but the files are not going where the existing Java files are (C:/Program Files/Java).
My question: how can I find out where files have downloaded to?

A: Where is that downloaded file?

If you know the name of the file, even partial name. You can do a Search. If you only know the extension, for Java it is .jar or .idx, you can search using a wild card (search: *.jar) Java files are stored under C:\Documents and Settings\yourprofilename under .java, .javaws or jpl_cahce folders. Be sure you are showing Hidden Files and Folders.

I have Windows XP Pro, sp 2 and use Firefox 2.0.

When I try to download a large (over 2.5 GB) file it always stops before the file is completely downloaded. When it stops it says "Done", like there is nothing wrong. I can download small to medium (0-500MB) files alright. And it messes up at different sites. So it's not site related.

A:File download says done and stops before file is completely downloaded in Firefox

Use a download manager.

Hello guys,

I have had this problem for quite a time now. Everytime I try to download a file it is corrupt.

For instance, I tried downloading a movie clip off rapidshare and although its only 3 files and 300MB, it always came as CRC error check failed. I tried downloading it from multiple servers of rapidshare but had no success. I also tried downloading other files yet I am having no success downloading anything.

Finally I decided to reformat my computer and I still got the same issue. So then I read in a forum that this might be caused by my hard drive. Therefore I went out and bought a new hard drive and installed Windows XP Professional and I still have the same problem.

I have updated ALL motherboard, video, audio and additional utility drivers. I am also updated Windows XP till date. I also read on this forum about ComboFix and tried troubleshooting it. Here is my Combofix log:

Well I downloaded the zbrush program and the install guide but they downloaded in .php format, because I used free download manager on the links instead of firefox. I know it downloaded the program and exe because it's the right size but I don't know how to change it from a .php extension file to an .exe so I can execute the program in windows xp.
Any advice would be great cause this file is really big and I really don't want to re-download it since dial up took hours and hours the first time.

A:How to open exe file that downloaded as a php file?

Change the file name extension to .exe.To do this, open My Computer, Go to Tools -> Folder Options -> View Tab. Under Advanced Settings, do not check Hide extensions for known file types. Then change to extension of the file. This only works in Windows XP.

I need to know where are the downloaded files stored in Windows 7 that are installed in background through 500kb installers.

A:Where is my downloaded file

Do you know what they are called? Try typing the name, or part of the name, in the box that pops up when you hit the start button, then right click on the name and click on "Open File Location"

Or you could look in "Downloads" - Type that in the box and "Open File Location", you should find them there.

Hi everyone - hope this is posted in the right area

I am trying to download a file from this page -

when I click on the blue text of my choice, a box pops up asking me whether I want to open it from its present location or save it to disk. If I choose open it, a box comes up showing the download in process - at the end, I get a WinZip box, which says that this is an 'evaluation copy' and asks me what I want to do - agree to the evaluation conditions, quit, or get ordering info. I click agree, and I get a Winzip Wizard. I start trying to click my way through this process - I get screens like - 'Would you like to Unzip or Install from optr_por[1].zip' (I say yes) and then "Click now to unzip to selected folder, C:/unzipped/optf_por[1]. I say yes - a box comes up which says the files have been successfully unzipped to this location, and then a Windows Folder called TEMP pops up with an file inside it - the file is a Winzip icon, and seems to be the file I have just downloaded - it is called "optf por"....

Seems good so far. Then I click on it, hoping to see the document I have attempted to download. But I get a small box that says 'WinZip self extractor' at the top, and which says 'To Unzip all files in optf_por.exe to the specified folder, press the unzip button'. The specified folder is C:/WINNT/TEMP. I press Unzip and... a tiny box comes up which shows the p... Read more

A:where is my downloaded file?

It can be confusing trying to keep track of where downloaded programs unzip to especially using winzip. I think your first step should be to clean out the default folder winnt temp. I don't believe there is anything needed there but just to be on the safe side don't delete anything from the recycle bin until you're sure you can reboot and run programs without error messages. Next instead of letting the program run itself without installing on your hard drive create a new floder on the C drive tree or whatever your hard drive letter is and save it to that folder (save to disk, browse, choose that folder C:temp that you created.) That way if it unzips to the winnt folder it should be the only program in there, plus you have the original download on your computer so you won't have to keep downloading each time . As to what program to use to open the file that depends on what kind of program it is. Good luck

Hey all,

Sorry I'm new to the forum, hopefully this is the right place to put this.

I've just upgraded my Dell XPS 420 to windows 7-32bit Home Premium from vista and now any time I try and install a program from the internet (even things like iTunes or Firefox) I'm runnig into problems.

Once I've downloaded any set-up file I click on it and the user account asks if I want to allow the program access. Once I click yes it thinks about it for a bit and then nothing happens.

I've tried running them as administrator and in compatability mode. I've also tried unblocking them in the properties and even re-downloading and installing without any user account settings or firewall but nothing works.

I even thought it might be a bad install of Windows so I formatted my hard drive and tried again but still no luck.

Can anyone please help, my computers basically useless right now

Hello! The title should say slow

My friend is having some issues with his computer. He recently downloaded a music file (or so he thought) that was full of viruses. He's been using Spyware Doctor to get rid of some of it, but it is still running extremely slow.

He uses Malwarebytes but the virus (I'm assuming) denies him access to use it.

Would it be okay to post his HijackThis Log?

Thank you guys You're all wonderful helpers!

Hello BC community, today I was searching for a keyboard macro to use in a game, it was zipped, had no password and was not detected by Eset Nod 32, I am using Windows 7 64 bits but I don't have a installation cd (custom pc). When I opened it, my default browser (Google Chrome) crashed and my computer rebooted. Then my anti virus found cmsetac.dll and ntdtcstp.dll, both were rated as win32/cakl.nag trojan and couldn't be cleaned, I already tried finding them with regedit, regscanner and msconfig but found nothing. I'm scanning my pc with Malware Bytes right now and found 4 objects so far, I'm also running Security Check by Screen317. I was reading some stuff at Virus Radar and I have a log file named "KB8888239.log", according to VR that is where the collected files go before being sent to a remote machine (scary stuff lol). These dlls are also related to mstwain32.exe, there's a folder in Windows folder called twain_32 and a dll file called twain_32.dll, but I don't want to go around deleting stuff. I think that is all the info I can give at the moment, as I'm still scanning with MB. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've just joined this forum and both the questions and replies look awfully technical for me, but I'll try.

I downloaded a zipped file and Vista seems to have made it into a folder, a sub-folder of downloads, rather than put it *into* Downloads. It then says it can't open it as the file is invalid. Onboard help has no entry for "invalid..."

I wonder what might make a file invalid, whether this is a Windows error, and whether --and how-- one can chage a folder into a file?

boopme sent me here.
I have a Windows 7 laptop.
I don't know what's happening with my laptop. It's been an utter mess for the past month now. I think I might have downloaded an infected .rar file. First I went to the "Am I infected?" forum and boopme tried to help me and then he told me to come here. But before I made this post I tried following the steps in the "it may not be malware" guide. But unfortunately that has not helped.
My laptop has had all kinds of different problems over these last 5 weeks. They seem to keep changing. It will be one problem for a few days and then it will be a different problem for the next few days. Right now my laptop is VERY slow to start and once it finally does, nothing seems to work or if something does work it takes forever. In fact, I have to make this post from a different computer.
I ran Check Disk about 7 or 8 times over these past few weeks and each time I ran it it would find errors and fix them. It would even say "the volume is clean" after it finished. Every time after I ran Check Disk my laptop seemed to run fairly smooth but then the next day it would go right back to a slow grind. If you want I can post the Check Disk results.
I even did a clean boot and my laptop was still slow.
My Windows Update hasn't been working right for the past several months now so I thought that might be the cause of some of these problems so I disabled it in Services.
Also for some reason my System Res... Read more

I'm trying to download Lavasoft Adaware to my new laptop. I have downloaded this program to other computers several times with no problems. Now I am getting the message:

"Windows cannot open this file.
To open this file, Windows needs to know what program created it. Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from a list of programs on your computer."

The online option gives me a "page cannot be displayed" message. The manual option gives me a list of programs; I haven't tried them all, but none have worked so far, and none seem appropriate to this progam.

Hello. I have a Windows 7 64bit laptop.
I have a strong suspicion that my laptop may be infected with something. All of a sudden it became really slow doing things and it will just completely freeze up. Like for example , trying to search through my files using Windows Explorer or anytime I try using any of my browsers, especially Firefox. Firefox is super slow even when I open it in safe mode. Then my laptop will freeze up to the point where I end up having to just unplug it to shut it off. It also freezes up even when I don't open a browser.
This all started 5 or 6 days ago. Unfortunately I think I may have downloaded an infected .rar or .zip file. It was a folder of images (or at least that's what it was supposed to be). The reason I think it was suspicious is because it never did finish downloading. Then, the next day after that, I downloaded and installed a definition update for Windows Defender and then immediately after that is when I first started noticing problems with my Firefox and then all the other problems.
I was going to restore my system back to the point before I installed the definition update but then I noticed that my laptop was not saving any restore points. So I tried to fix my pagefile by defragmenting my hard drive.
I ran a boot time scan with Avast but I'm still having the same problems. Here are the results of that scan:

Can you assist please.

A:Cant open downloaded file

Welcome to Seven Forums,

Are you saying you can't install MSE with Speccy running?
If that's the case, exit Speccy and try to install MSE.

Can you post screen prints of what you see for the browser problems, and explain what is wrong?

I have Firefox set up to save downloaded files to Desktop but newly downloaded files don't appear until the desktop is refreshed by hitting F5. Occasionally I get a similar story when deleted files don't disappear until F5 is pressed.

The more I use Windows 7, the less I understand how it can be considered a better product than Vista. Vista SP2 was working out much, much better for me. The small inconveniences in in 7 has sent usability down the pipes.

A:Downloaded file does not appear on Desktop without F5

I am having the exact same problem. It fixes itself if I force quite explorer and start it again... but this is hardly a solution. I am wondering if you use CCleaner at all. I am thinking that messed with some registry setting that caused this to happen. Also if you found any solution please let me know.

I've keep reading where you all recommend running HiJackthis so I downloaded it
Before download I disabled:
avg anti-virus
sygate firewall
pop-up stopper
joi express - a speed up thing from my ISP
I enabled all the java stuff
Went to explorer and told it to show all files
Then when I try to open the dll - msvbvm60.dll
I get the "open with" screen.
Doesn't this mean I don't have the program that this needs to open it?
I had already unzipped it.

I downloaded a file with like 700 drivers on it for windows xp vista and 7.
The instructions were pretty simple... just burn insert the cd and then through the control panel choose somthing with hardware...

I dont know how to do it on win7

A:downloaded ISO file with drivers

First of all, where did you download this from? Why did you download? Are you sure it's not a scam or a virus?

Second of all you shouldn't ever need to download such a thing due to Windows 7 being more or less driver sufficient. Even if there is an odd driver missing you should ALWAYS download it directly from the manufacturers website or from the install disk that came with the device.

Just so you are aware, from reading your post I have gathered you have downloaded a dodgy ISO off the internet and intend to burn it to a CD and then do something with it. I have no idea where it's from, what drivers they are, why you would want to do this in the first place or what your/its intentions are.

Please in future can you explain what you want us to do and what exactly you have already done.

Hey guys,

been here before and I love your feedback. It has helped keep this old hunk of junk running.

Right now, I think I just made an idiotic mistake. I was on AIM and my friend sent me a link and said "hey I think i found a picture of you". It is morning, I just woke up, and i'm easily amused. So I clicked it, tried to execute the file or whatever, and nothing happened. Just then I went to a website to try to find out how to open it, and much to my surprise it says DO NOT OPEN THESE, possibly virus, etc.
Now my heart is racing. What do I do?! Spybot? Virus scan. Will it pick it up? Is there any alternative method I could to use to get rid of it?
DO NOT OPEN, just for reference.

I mindlessly clicked on a link that caused me to download a .src file while watching a twitch stream.  The link opened up a page that immediately closed itself and started a download of a file by the name of screenshot and some numbers with a .src extension.  I did not proceed to open this file, and deleted it immediately.  I am afraid that it automatically ran a script and did some bad stuff to my computer.  I am using windows 7 ultimate 64bit.
I searched the internet and found another poster with a relatively similar problem:
I proceeded to follow similar instructions as suggested, to try to investigate and fix my problem.
I have completed the following steps to try to fix my problem:
1.Downloaded and run wipe  and system ninja,
2. Ran ccleaner
3. Rebooted my machine, disabled my antivirus, downloaded and updated eScanAV.  I am currently scanning.  My second post will contain the log.  I will run Zemana, JRT, and Adware Cleaner as InadequateInfirmity suggests and post those logs as well.
Please let me know how else I can proceed to secure my computer and make sure it's clean.  Should I change all my passwords? I would prefer not to if I can avoid it, but understand if that is advisable.  Thank you sincere... Read more

While searching for programs/files to remove that I no longer use I opened my downloaded Programs file and found "Adult Links". (Yes my husband visits those sites) Anyhow, when I try to remove it, a box comes up with the following: "These program files are currently being used by one or more programs. Please close some programs and try again. You may have to restart Windows" I closed all programs except "Explorer and systray" and restarted, but it just won't go away. I've been trying for a couple of weeks now. Also if someone knows how to remove it, could there possibly be a way to block it from coming back?

I'd really appreciate any and all suggestions.

I called Dell and they were unable to help me delete it and after talking to two different people there they told me I would just have to live with it on my desktop. I downloaded and .xls file from my email, worked on the file and then clicked save. I did not save as. I cannot find this document anywhere. I tried downloading it again to save it to see where it would go but it says sharing violation (presumably because the folder it is being saved in already has the file). My assumption is it is in some temporary file somewhere (though why I can't access it under recent files I have no clue).
Can someone please tell me where to look for this file, I have tried searching on the name but no avail.

Hello Jill,
There's an easy way that i use and this is it...

Firstly create a new folder to wherever you want to 'Save' your downloads to [I have a D: Drive so I created various ones there.]

Once you have created this folder and named it what you want, every time you download a program or whatever, always click on Save As, then navigate to the folder you want it "saved to", and Bob's your Uncle...Hey Presto its in there when the download is finished.
One other point, do not choose open when the download completes, just Close; then navigate to your chosen folder and Right click on it and scan it with your anti virus; once this is done [and its clean] right click on it again and go Properties, and "Unblock" > OK....Now you can double click on it and install it, and you will always have the original file in this "saved" location as well.

Hope this answers your query.

Hi all,

Don't know if any of you can help...

I recently downloaded something but the file didn't save to the usual place. Instead, the file has been saved to a place on my PC which I am finding impossible to locate (the downloading was successfully completed after a short while by-the-way)

According to the program I used to download the file it has been saved to...

C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

(I'm not sure why the file was saved here!)

When I go to C:\Documents and Settings\ I am unable to find the 'User' folder and so cannot goto (or see) the other folders where this file has been saved. The only folder I can see in Documents and Settings is 'All Users'

If any one of you can help I would be most appriciated.

The software download came as 4KB html file to desktop, not a zip as most do. Double-clicking it went to a page with a download link, as well as left-side navigation links for Home Page, Customer Service, and all other software available from that site. The address bar showed a C:/documents and Settings\USER\Desktop.xxxx.htm

Hovering pointer over ALL links shows a File///C:/... desktop address with .php extension, even the 'Home Page' link in nav list. Left clicking the 'download software' link brings error that says: can't find "file:/C:///Documents%20and%20Settings/USER/Desktop/downloads/c13eb4626c13090cf3b003e289ff7885/xxxxsetup.exe"

Make sure path or internet address is correct. (xxxx replaces file name).

The assoc'd files d'loaded separately as html files (templates, tutorials, etc.) opened to different page that asked for username and p'word.

Here, only the 'Home Page" link showed http destination with hover, but the login showed C:/ address with .php ext'n. And of course the submit button returned a "Can't find page" error page.

I just now downloaded and installed XP EXEfix from another older thread here that was recently updated. This had no effect.

I've downloaded numerous software pkg's before and since, and they always went straight to a self-contained wizard after double-click.

What setting could be preventing my getting this one piece of software? I've checked... Read more

My user is trying to download an .xls file from a bank, as he has done every month for the past few years. When he downloads it, he cannot open and view it, there is no data in it.

He has contacted the bank and asked them, they say the data is there. they have logged in under his information and it downloads correctly for them.

I have downloaded it correctly from the website under his credentials on my PC.

i remoted into his system and can see the file says .xls when it downloads but when it finishes installing it installs to his PC the extention changes as .html, and won't open.

i've tried manually changing the .html back to .xls but it won't open that way. he's running our company's standard IE6, noone else seems to be having this problem. I've reinstalled all of IE6's defaults but its the same problem
i've googled everything i can think of... i'm at a loss.

i'm wondering if he's downloading something thats defaulting .xls into .html, or something? i have no idea!
if you have any ideas please help!

I opened and began working on a Word 2007 file from Office Outlook WebAccess. The laptop on which I am working automatically saves downloaded files to the Temporary Internet folder--something that is not normally a default on our computers so I did not bother to check. I incorrectly assumed it was defaulted to my documents. I saved the file that was downloaded and shut my computer down when I was done. Now, I don’t have access to the most recent work. I have checked the Temprorary Internet File, and I have checked the Content.IE5 files—I did a directory search from the command prompt to do this. I am using IE7—we have to on all work computers. Is there a way to find and retrieve the saved version of the file, if so, HOW? I'm on Widows XP.

I'm not sure where this question should actually belong, but I just put it here.

Anyways, like the title says, is it better to immediately run a .exe file or save it? Most directions online say to save it and then run it. But saving it takes space (I know just a little) and more time.

Which one's better? Why?

All keys/passwords from my programs were in a folder (named Software).
After buying a new program I tried to include it in the key.txt file in that folder
The file had disappeared
But a few days before I had uploaded the Software folder to Google Drive. So I downloaded it.
The key.txt file appeared but I could not open it.
There is a lens at the right of the file which when scanned upon, says "view file in folder"
When I click on it, a message, on a black background, says
Unable to locate document with ID "about 25 letters and numbers"
It does not admit a copy and paste and goes away after a couple of seconds.
So I painfully wrote down the whole string, about 4 characters at a time because the message would go away.
I entered all these characters in Google Search and got no answer (this has not been found).
How can I recover my programs passwords should the PC crash, or if I wish to reinstall or something, without having to contact the program manufacturer.
I cannot call the support telephone because I live in South America, and long distance calls are very expensive. And, many times, you cannot find a place in their sites for written support requests.
Could anybody help me with this, please?

I thought it was "legit" so clicked the download. I then started the installation but suddenly realized the file icon looked "unfamiliar". I stopped the installation half-way and cancelled it (I was prompted with "the installation is not complete" and asked if I really want to cancel it).
I went back to google search and saw the legitimate WinRAR from

I've since deleted the "WinRAR" from software-watcher but am not sure if any adware has been installed and activated. As the program was installed in a company's computer (and I am NOT the administrator), I do not know if the computer is equipped with anti-adware programs.
Before I ask our IT guys to check the computer, I am soliciting input from experts on this forum.
Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Whilst I was downloading a CounterStrike update on my ADSL connection for a friend who has dialup I had a rather spectacular crash in Windows XP (Home) for some reason. Because the programs I had open (Opera, Adaware [not running] and Trillian) all suffered damage upon reopening I am concerned that the download might also be corrupted. It was two-thirds completed and resumed OK in Opera's transfer but I would like to test it somehow before burning to a CD and sending to my friend.

Does anyone know of an easy program that will be able to check the file for me please? I have Googled and looked at the WinLinux 2003 page but I'm not sure that is what I want. The downloaded file is SteamInstall_CS.exe if that is of any help.

Thank you!

It sound like you have been saddled with a Trojan.
Did you experience any other problems ? Has your homepage been changed ? Have you got any dialer icons in your Start Menu ?

Go here :

Have a look here for a trojan hunter program (its a free download.)

After getting rid of the offending item you can prevent it happening again, do this -

In Internet Explorer go Tools > Internet Options > Advanced and there under Browsing look for two boxes marked Enable Install on Demand. If they are ticked - just untick them. In future if anything like this tries to install you will first get a prompt and you can decline.

I doubt you have removed all of the adware. A good start, though. Follow up with these scans:
Use AdwCleaner to cleanup browser shortcuts, find and remove other adware.
Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Scan button.
When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the

I have a Downloaded Program File entry, that has "unknown status", no creation date, and it says "none" under Last Accessed.
It does claim to be 4kb's in size.

This program file has no name, but instead, is a grouping of numbers and letters, all enclosed in parenthese..{}.

Highlighting it, and right clicking it only brings up the properties of the entry.

It cannot be deleted either from the keyboard, or from the menu...File>delete..Edit>cut.

The properties of this entry show it to be an Active X control, (with no creation date, no access date and no status. It does not appear to be does not say that there are any damaged files associated with it).
The "codebase" has an entry that I cannot put in here because it give access to my computer, and this program, (I think.)

I noticed a command prompt running, it only stayed for a couple seconds before closing, in this time I checked task manager to see what it was - "bitsadmin.exe"

I checked Google and found a bit of info on this, it's how Microsoft distributes updates or whatnot.

I checked the Event Viewer and found these logs:

The BITS service created a new job: amijob, with owner PC\doko

BITS started the amijob transfer job that is associated with the hxxp:// URL.

The transfer job is complete.

I downloaded that Updater.exe file on a virtual machine to check it out, when executing it, it just closes again - not sure what it does and I'm not sure whether it's malicious.

I checked it with Virus Total:

I downloaded a song that i bought since i needed it in pure wav format for the lossless quality for djing purposes.
However, I cant do anything with it now. As soon as i navigate the windows explorer to the folder where the file is (Downloads), it starts to load forever and, in task manager, it starts consuming more and more CPU time by the second and same is for the amount of read bytes. It goes on forever as far as going from 00:00:01 in CPU time to 01:00:00 and continues.

Now i dont know what to do since the actual existence of the file slows everything down and not just opening it. I can't open it, I can't rename it, move it, remove it, anything around it. As soon as i get to the folder that the file is, everything goes to hell. Only way to stop the load is to close the exporer.exe process and start it again. Just closing the folder isnt enough since the process doesnt stop loading after that unless its restarted.

I have tried the following with no success:
Scan with Malwarebytes. Found nothing.
Defragment with Piriform Defraggler. No change.
Check disk. No errors.

Does anyone have an idea on what i should do? I really don't want to reinstall the whole operating system because the pc is a domain pc and i dont have the permission to make such changes to the system.
I just got a new idea on what i should try: boot into safe mode and try to remove it there. But in the meantime the problem still exists so any suggestions are highly appreciated.

A:Downloaded file causes the explorer.exe to load forever

I have recently downloaded a supposed video file from a file sharing website. The video was split into 2 parts and appeared to be a RAR file. When it downloaded i ran it through a RAR decompresion application (RARzilla free) that i have used to open RAR files before but it would not recognise the video file as a RAR file and could not open it. When i looked at the file properties the file type says 'File' not RAR or any other familiar type.
The files in question seem to be proper files, they took time to download and are of a signifiacent size, so there is apparently content within them. I would just like to know how to open them and play the video i (at least thought) i was downloading.
What do i need to do or what software do i need to download to make this work.
The website i used to access the videos is:
But the videos are actualy hosted here:

A:Opening a Downloaded Video File - help needed

Look at the file extention of the files you downloaded. It should end with a .rar,if it does not then rename the file.Doesn't matter what you name the file, won't change the packing. For example,if you downloaded 2 files rename them to 1.rar and 2.rar.If it's not corrupt it will unpack.Let us know if it works for you.

I use Windows XP SP3 and I have Panda Antivirus Global Protection 2009. Yesterday I downloaded a file on torrents and it turns out that it was infected with adware. I tried removing it myself using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Spybot - Search & Destroy but when I try to run the programs the processes start but the programs don't come up, this happens in safe mode aswell. I also ran a scan with Panda thinking its adware database might find something but sadly it didn't.

In Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox if I search on google and click on any links or if I try going to specific sites like Spybot's site I end up getting redirected to pages showing either random ads or other pages or one constantly reoccuring ad for Stopzilla. Also not sure if this is related but since I got this my computer has totally locked up explorer.exe and all 3 times in one day causing me to have to reboot every time.

Usually when I get crap like this I just slave over my computer on Google until I get rid of it which I usually do but this time I figured i'd seek out some help and save me a few days on Google. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Hi everyone. New to the forums (although I have come here for help plenty of times). I have already broken the rule of not using combofix before being told to use it because I did a google search on my problem and it was recommended for each of the people who had similar problems (and I didn't realize I wasn't supposed to do it without supervision). I will give a summary of how this started, what I have done to fix it so far, and where things stand.

I have a Dell Latitude E6500 with windows XP pro, SP3. This is a work computer, and the hard drive is encrypted using safeguard easy 4.3. It has some proprietary software that is only compatible with certain versions of "off the shelf" software. One of the programs we need is Adobe Reader 9.1. As you know, 9.1 is an old version of adobe, but no other version will work with our proprietary software and of course our corporate office likes to make things difficult. So after a google search for 9.1, I attempted the download here:

That site is where I contracted the virus that I now have. Our virus scan software is required and controlled by our corporate office (but they do not help us clean infected PCs). We run Symantec Endpoint Protection. I also run Immunet 3.0, Secunia PSI and Malwarebytes if I suspect infections or if software needs to be updated (I can update some software on my own without creating conflicts, but not adobe reader).

So aft... Read more

Hey all,

I am working with a computer that has an issue where, when you download any .exe or .msi file from anywhere on the internet, the file is saved with the extension replaced with an underscore.

For instance, say I go to the CCleaner 'builds' download page. Clicking on the 'Portable' build link, I am prompted to save a to my files are fine.

But if I click on the 'Installer' build link, I am prompted to save ccsetup._ so I have to either change the extension before I download it or afterwards.

I am guessing this was caused by a piece of malware in the past. The machine is clean at this point, but I can't figure out where to change a setting or registry entry to fix this problem.

Thanks for your help,

he opened it and noticed that it took away my documents and my computer among others on the start list and then he turned it on the next day and a message appeared sayin system massage (yes massage) your system has been hacked and then he pressed ok (all e could do) and it takes him a log in box like you would find at a library or at school not the list of names of account like you would get on a home computer, so he logged in and all it shows is his blank desktop background with no icons not start button nothing, i tried safe mode but it still does the same just a blank screen but in safe mode. i think this thing is in the registry some where coz the prompt comand box came up he said when he clicked it so if i could get to the registy i could delete it but at the moment its saying that editing the registry has been disabled by the administrator which lol my friend thought he was (the admin) so its obviously a virus or as it said at the beginning been hacked, what can i do coz he needs files for tomorrow and would preferable want his computer back in one state without restarting everything.

Hi guys,Let me just give you a run through of what I have done and where I am now.First, I downloaded a file that I shouldn't have and it infected my system. I am running windows xp professional. The virus proceeded to destroy my antivirus software, edit my registry, downloaded a bunch of stuff, and then destroy my internet connection. Iexplorer kept on starting its process and I think that was how the virus was downloading stuff.I was using antivir, but the virus destroyed that. I cannot uninstall it and when I try to reinstall I get a CRC sum of (filename) has changed! This could be due to a virus! After that, I booted up into the ubuntu partition that I was playing around with and downloaded AVG for linux. However, that only allows you to test files and does not actually remove them. I went in and deleted everything that was found and then rebooted back into windows. I ran spybot search and destroy and removed everything I found there. I ran combofix and that found some stuff. Then I installed AVG free, and then everything went crazy. AVG detected almost everything as a win32/heur virus and maxed my cpu out like crazy. I uninstalled AVG free and ran system restore. This is where I got my drivers back up and working due to the system restore. I then installed avast antivirus and did a bootup scan. That also detected a lot of stuff as Win32:JunkPoly [Cryp]. Now, whenever I boot up, zone alarm tells me that generic host processes for win32 services is trying to acces... Read more

A:Worms and Trojans being downloaded to temp file - help

When I returned from hibernate today, I got the following virus warning from avast:

File name: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\VRTC9.tmp
Malware name: Win32:Trojan-gen {Other}
Malware type: Virus/Worm
VPS version: 090217-0, 02/17/2009

And it tried to access the internet, but I stopped it with zonealarm.

Also, when I delete the files in the temp folder marked as viruses plus the ones that avast does not pick up but the "online malware scan" does, a folder called "" is created then disappears.

Any help would be appreciated.
