Script to call for a file then copy file to specific folders

Q: Script to call for a file then copy file to specific folders

I have Windows XP-Pro SP2 installed on a P4 1.8GHz CPU with 768MB RAM

I would like a script that opens a commamd window and calls for a file (icon file) to be copied to a specific folder on 5 different drives. I would like to be able to either paste in the file path or drag and drop the file onto the command window. The icon file will always come from the same folder "C:\WINDOWS\system32\00 ICONS\System Folders" and be copied, sometimes replacing a file with the same name, to these 5 folders:

"W:\WINDOWS\system32\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"X:\0 aAPPS\00 a Install First\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"W:\WINDOWS\system32\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"N:\0 aAPPS\00 a Install First\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"D:\0 aAPPS\00 a Install First\00 ICONS\System Folders"

I apologize if I am using incorrect terms. I don't know if a batch file could do this or if it would have to be done with vbs. I would appreciate the help. I know nothing about writng vbs script and only a little about writing batch files.
Thank you.

Does anyone know how to write a script that would specifically
copy a file "File.ext" to the clipboard and paste it to this

I do not mean editing the VBScript file. I currently right click
"File.ext" select "Copy" then right click "My Script.vbs" and

I would like to know if I can do that with a script. I have included

Is there a way to call any/all specific window help files from within a script?

Hi:

I need a very simple script, in CGI-Perl or even bash language, and to be started from a browser form, to just read a file, finding a specific line by comparing to a received pattern, and from this line ahead always list 3 lines.

Considering, for instance, this file, that I would call: rejected.log:

11111111 22222222 33333333
22222222 bbbbbbbb ccccccccc
jdjfheduf sdkfheuf idifhdihfif
difheihfi eiofjeif efi9ef eijh eifje fef
aaaaaaaa 22222222 33333333
ddddddddd bbbbbbbb ccccccccc
kdjgirir iofejgiejrg ioerugejge
ljeri 98rg398 gio3jrg9 3rjoer

If I run the script by:

scriptname aaaaaaaa

It should list the lines:

aaaaaaaa 22222222 33333333
ddddddddd bbbbbbbb ccccccccc
kdjgirir iofejgiejrg ioerugejge

Please, note that it also should list all the existing occurrences of the same aaaaaaaa through the file.

I thank a lot in advance for this so special help.

Would something like this do what you want?

exit 1
else
egrep -A 2 "$PATTERN" $FILENAME

Of course, you could also supply the filename to be searched as an argument to the script.

hi,
since two days i am trying to copy a exe file from a usb stick to my machine.

i tried everything... completely disabled uac, logged on as "superadmin", gave all permissions that i could think of.... but still..

the strange thing is that explorer does not even display the icon correctly. it shows only the "generic" exe icon.

everytime i try to copy the file windows tells me that i do not have the permission to make changes to the file.

btw:
- the file is not broken, nor is the usb stick. i tried it on another win7 machine and it works just fine.
- tried to copy it on D: drive too... same problem.
- zipped the file. copied the zipped file successfully to the drive but when unzipping it the folder is empty without an error message.
- turned off defender and AV.... just in case it thinks it's a bad file.

well, i never had this problem before. any ideas?

edit: i forgot to mention that this file on the usb is in the same folder with several other files which i can copy without any problems.

Based on the above quote you will have a txt file with a list of folders, you would like to copy them to a different network location.

Correct?

The list of folders in the txt file, will that just be the folder name of the full path to the folder?Folder Name - Test_Folder
Full Path - Z:\Shared_Drive\Test_Folder

Hello, I have had this problem for a couple of years now, even in a few different computers. I have a folder with files I am keeping, copying it from computer to computer when I change computers. In this folder I am unable to see folder/file names unless I mark them. This has irritated me to some extent since there are around 12-13000 files in this folder by now. I have asked around at computer-tech stores, and some of my more or less nerdy friends. One of wich is mostly always able to help me... but not with this.

EDIT: I should probably add that the same thing happens to every file or folder I add to this folder.

Referring to Windows Me again. Since I cured my last problem 'lack of resources' (overload of old internet files I think)I have been 'infested' with "VBE Folders". They suddenly arrived in pretty well all my Word document sections - all are empty. I have tried throwing them in the recycle bin but they keep re-appearing. Do I need these? If not, how can I delete them, then deter them from re-appearing? If I must keep them, can I hide them? They eat nothing, make no noise, and seem to be harmless but their (unnecessary?) presence in the document lists annoys me.

I was wondering if there was a way to create a set of folders in a specific directory according to a date range that i input.

ie.

Select start date 2011 10 01

select end date 2012 10 01

Select Output path of c:\users\XXXX\desktop\export data

and it creates a folder for all days from 2011 10 01 through 2012 10 01 and places them in the output path i have set for it.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

A:Is there a Script or batch file that can create folders by date range

Welcome damjohnron to the windows 7 forums.

Here are some snippits of a dos batch file that will create a directory with the datek and tell you if it already exists.

set DATEST=%DATE:~10,4%%DATE:~4,2%%DATE:~7,2%
echo %datest%
rem if it looks ok, then you can press enter to continue
pause
if exist %homepath%\documents\%datest% goto dup1
md %homepath%\documents\%datest%
rem the pause can be taken out if you wish.
pause
go to end
:dup1
rem you already have done this.
pause
:end

you can change the path statement to the directory you wish.

This batch file can be run each day that you want to create a new sub directory.
There are other ways to do this but a bit more complicated such as reading an external
text file for the directory names.

I want to write a batch file that do this for me:

- makes a directory with the "yy.mm.dd.hh.mm" as the directory name,
- copies files and folders from a TEST directory to above destination,
- copies only new (or modified) files from the TEST directory to a separate folder.

Any Idea?

A:a simple batch file for copy files and folders

To create a directory with the date and time as the name, In a batch file use:

set DirName=%date:~-4,4%.%date:~-7,2%.%date:~0,2%.%time:~0,2%.%time:~3,2%
MD \%DirName%

Then in the same batch file use robocopy to copy files to the new directory

robocopy TEST %DirName% /e

you need to add your own paths and read the robocopy help for the right switches you need.
By default Robocopy copies only files that don't exist in the target directory but because you are creating a new directory every time it will copy every thing in TEST

You could use the /A switch which only copies files with the Archive attribute set.

I'm currently in the process of copying files back from the cloud in the exact same location where I had them before and now it says that the file name is too long and prompts to see whether I want to skip the file or not. The error message given does not
give the full file name or the path so it is impossible to see which files were copied successfully or not. This never happened with XP! Then afterwards I found that some of the files with long names did copy successfully whereas others didn't. I find this
to be a very user unfriendly process and I'm totally confused! These are critical files and I'm sure I haven't exceeded 260 characters or whatever. This is soOoO frustrating!!

A:file copy error message not sufficient + file name too long will not copy

Hi ,

There is a limit of filename length within Windows Explorer. In the Windows API (with some exceptions discussed in the following paragraphs), the maximum length for a path is MAX_PATH, which
is defined as 260 characters.
The shell and the file system have different requirements. It is possible to create a path with the Windows API that the shell user interface is not able to interpret properly.
This means that your long filename can only be handled at the command prompt level and you cannot drag and drop an illegal length filename within Windows Explorer.

Please simplify your folders and titles.

More information, please check the part of Maximum Path Length Limitation in the link below.

Hi All,
First of all please accept my apologies if I posted this thread in this section of the forum: I believe that the old section for "VBScript" thread is no longer active.

I state in advance that the following solution is not enough for me:"http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=1687849" so I have decided to make a more detailed script that does this job and generates a specific log file in .csv format so that I can filter everything as per my reference.

[WAY THE SCRIPT WORKS]
This script is essentially based on two input parameters:

targetFolderPath (I believe it's meaningful)threshold (all the files/folders older than this value will be deleted)
Additionally this script is designed in a such a way that if a folder is older than 'threshold' but contains files and/or sub-folders younger than 'threshold', it will not be deleted!

[MY PROBLEM]
The script works fine (I believe) but during my tests (before putting it in production) I discovered that strangely if I reduce the value of the "threshold" parameter to a value lower than 11 for example, then the result is a .csv log file that does NOT contain all the entries (actually 90% of them are missing!!! ).

[TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS ALREADY FOLLOWED]
I checked more in depth the script and I noticed that the problem is in the recursive call:"manage(childFolderPath)".

Hi guys1
I'm about to create a .reg file that will set path in registry to my own icon for specific file extensions. E.g. I want my own icon as a default icon for .ini extension. And not only for one extension but for more of them, in a single .reg file. As always I don't want to mess it up,so I'm looking for some basic assistance on how to fill a notepad. And I know this is the best place to look at

P.S. I do use a Default Program Editor and File Types Manager, but I wanted a single .reg that will do the job for multiple modifications in a single click, something like backup of icon-registry-modifications, as I like to format my PC every year to ensure clean working environment. Setting things up de novo is a lot of fun but time consuming... I made a backup of registry and a Restore Point, just in case.

For any idea, thanks in advance!!

A:.reg file to set default icon for specific file extensions

Hi,

If changing the icon worked with the tools you mention, use Process Monitor or Regshot to track down specific changes in the registry for .ini that change the icon. Then create similar registry entries for other extensions in your REG-file.

Backround: I am a college student majoring in Information Technology with a focus in programming. I also work for my school's IT department as an IT associate. I have 4 years of experience dealing with hardware and software and have studied Net+ and A+ certification books.

Problem: At my school my boss, the IT Director, wants to schedule a batch file to run weekly that will delete items from the desktop and folders of the "Student" account on all of the student computers. He asked us associates to go around to every student computer with this batch file on a thumb drive and schedule the task. Seems simple enough right? The problem is we are talking upwards of 300 computers throughout the campus. I proposed a solution to him where we would use a script that would essentially consult a text document with the names of all of the student computers in it, then run the file.

I am 99% this can be done, I just have a very small amount of programming experience. If anyone has an answer or knows of an easier way to accomplish this I appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Hello all!

So I work tech support at my company and recently had one of our secretaries run into a virus. It was an email containing a fake resume in .doc format that once opened, attempted to direct the computer to download a trojan. AVG detected it right off the bat and quarantined it. I then ran a full system scan with AVG, Malwarebytes, and Spybot and everything came back clean.  I had assumed AVG along with Word being macro-disabled by default kept anything from actually happening.

However, at the time of the download she was running our company bookkeeping software (eClub for those interested) and it crashed once she tried to use it again. I check it out and see that the .exe to run eClub had been removed from the eClub folder (let's call it eclub.exe). Weird! So I go ahead and completely uninstall the program and reinstall, only to find eclub.exe was not reinstalled with it. I copy eclub.exe from another computer and try to paste it into the folder, and I'm told I don't have permission to do so. Then things get weird:

1. I uninstalled eClub completely again, removed the eClub folder and every possible saved setting for it.
2. I created a blank eClub folder (ex. C:\Program Files\eClub)
3. I can put anything I want into this folder, including .exes, EXCEPT for eclub.exe, getting the insufficient permission error.
4. I can put eclub.exe in subfolders of C:\Program Files\eClub without a problem

I'm in the process of repair/recovery of my machine (Dell Inspiron 8500 with Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2). I'm following exactly the instructions in: http://attachments.techguy.org/attac...chmentid=62075, but a problem has developed. The "software" file (which is the file that the original blue screen error message says is "corrupt, absent or not writable") will not copy to the new tmp directory to create the backup. My understanding from the article is that this backup file (software.bak) will later be used to restore correct settings for various software applications. Since I can't copy it, it appears that I am screwed, no? Or is there a way out somehow?

Thanks to anyone who's been there and can help...

BTW I have the XP installation disk that came with, and a diagnostics disk which I have not yet run.

Never mind, I had it wrong--didn't read the document referred to above carefully enough. The procedure worked like a charm, and the document is very easy to read and entertaining to boot! (pun intended).

The document describes a procedure that closely follows a Microsoft KB document (which I now can't find) but does not contain any warning regarding whether the OS is an OEM (original equipment manufacture) install or not. The Microsoft doc says not to use the procedure on an OEM-installed OS, but I just did it on my Dell, so that warning seems to be incorrect.

Many many thanks for the help provided by this document and this site.

A:Error copying file or folder; cannot copy img the directory or file cannot be created

This has caught me more than once.

The problem is a limitation on the number of files and folders allowed in the root folder of a FAT16 file system (as for a memory card) of 512. (Note, this number is reduced much further if longer file names than 8 characters are used, as most people will want to).

When transferring the files onto the card, new files will be rejected when you hit this limit.

So keep your files in separate folders, so they are not all in the root folder.

For files and folders in root it might be worth keeping your filenames under 8 characters in length so you can use the full 512 files on root folder.

A:Copy/Move File from One Disk To Another w/o Changing the File Creation Date

You can use a utility called "Set File Date" to change a file's creation date to whatever you want.

Hi,
I would like to create a .bat to copy files from source folder to destination folder.
Some files in source folder already exist in destination folder (Same name)
What I would like is that files existing in destination folder to be rename to f.eks filename_BAK.extension.
Eksampel.:
Source folder include. FileOne.asp - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt
Destination folder include. FileOne.asp - (NO FileTwo) - FileTree.txt
Result. FileOne.asp (version from source)(Existing renamed to FileOne_BAK.asp) - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt (version from source)(Existing renamed to FileTree_BAK.txt)
Now in desination folder.: FileOne.asp - FileOne_BAK.asp - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt - FileTree_BAK.txt
Files in source folder are placed in different folders, but in same structure in destination.

Kind regards
Sψren Kromann

When I use the XCopy command in Windows 2000, I can copy any file I like; however, when I use copy-and-paste or drag-and-drop in either Windows Explorer or PowerDesk, I get the following error:

Cannot Copy File: Cannot Read from the Source File or Disk

I searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base and came up with only one article, Q224378. This article seems not to apply to my situation because it applies to Windows 2000 Server. I am running Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 2. I did attempt to install the fix that article Q224378 suggested anyway; but, I got an error message that I was attempting to upgrade a program that didn't exist on my system.

I have also learned that this error applies when copying from either of my SCSI CD-ROM drives, not when copying from hard disks or floppies.

Any Suggestions?

Hi Guys,

I want to make one batch file which daily copies yesterday's files from one folder & paste it to another folder.

I.e.
C:/111 folder has following files.
1.zip had yesterday's date
2.zip had yesterday's date
3.zip had last sunday's date

now, when i will run batch file today, it only copies 1.zip & 2.zip & move to another folder C:/222

So C:/222 contains following
1.zip had yesterday's date
2.zip had yesterday's date

Please note , i have to run this batch file daily which should not require any changes.

Hi All
I have a rather large file system with lots of folders & subfolders. When I want to save previously on Xp operating system I'd search in explorer open the folder I want then copy the address (e.g c:\customer records\client name\job address).
In windows 7, when I copy the folder address i get this "search-ms:displayname=Search%20Results%20in%20electronic%20files&crumb=location:S%3A%5CSEQ%5C011_Estimating %5Celectronic%20files\CHERMSIDE , 17 smith ST"

As you can imagine I cant paste that into a save as field and expect it find the folder location.

Does someone know if it can do what I want? keeping in mind this is about time saving and productivity exercise so I need a simple solution. It is also on a work computer so a lot of settings are locked.

Appreciate any help

Hi,

We currently have a folder which new builds are copied and compressed to .zip files and stuck in a  folder. Dozens of zip files are created every day
What I want to do is the following:

I want to copy the newest zip file from folder 1 to folder 2 and extract it.

What is the simplest way to find and copy the newest zip file considering multiple zip files are created each day?

I have the game 'Crysis' on two backup DVD's. I had to put the installation files in a .rar and split them so I could back it up (I downloaded the game digitally from EA)

So when I insert disk 1 and try to copy 'Crysis.part1.rar' to D:/Crysis (D: is my data drive, C: is strictly the OS and maybe 2 or 3 applications installed on it) it copies most of it, but when it gets to '5 seconds remaining' it comes up with this error. It takes like 6 minutes to copy it and then it errors out when it's almost done! I've tried 3 times and the error popped up every time. The disk is spotless... I mean it looks brand new. Not even a speck of dust or any smudges at all.

Why am I getting this error?? I don't know what to do! If I can't copy it I'll have to redownload the entire 6gb installation package from EA, which will take probably 4-5 hours.

Please help!

Additional file info from within the error window:
"Can't read from the source file or disk."
Name: Crysis.part1.rar

I have all the latest updates via Windows Update

Structure:
• I have a network directory that stores photos of individuals in jpg format. There may be only 2 pics of each person, or there may be 7 pics.
• Each persons pics are stored in a randomly named directory / subdirectory. dont have any control over the original program, it's just the way it was written, does not seem to follow any logical pattern, possibly a HEX naming structure based off the date & time, who knows (I will include a sample directory tree at the end of the post).
• Included within each of these created directories, along with the pictures, is a standard text file (filename "B.TXT") which includes the date the picture was taken, the persons name, and other information.
• Each time a person comes in and their picture is taken, the program: (i) creates the random directory (ii) stores the pics (iii) creates the "B.TXT" file with the persons information (iv) generates several other program specific files that I have no need for.
• The program names each of the pictures with the exact same names, which is why they are stored in different directories, so they will not overwrite. The retention period on each individuals directory, pics and files is approximately 40 days.

I'm currently using Richcopy to move about 4TB worth of data from our colo facility (1000 miles away) to our office. And that data also gets routed overseas first before coming back (don't ask). Needless to say, connectivity while not bad, could be better.

The small files are zooming right along, the issue is the larger files (the ones that are hundreds of MB or even several GB).

From time to time, I briefly lose network connectivity for a second or two, when that happens, the files currently being copied abort and once connectivity is restored, Richcopy just moves on to the next files. So when Richcopy advertises that it 'resumes', it seems it is talking about resuming a file copy queue, and not resuming partially copied files. Those have to start over from the beginning.

Is there a tool similar to Richcopy with the functionality I'm looking for?

Thanks!

I've taken a directory that is shared and I've looked up the share and permissions for both. Identical.
But do this for 3,000 files/directories in a tree, no can do.
I'd like to take all the share and privilege information for Suzie and give them to Tom.
Can do?

What usergroups are they assigned to? Also you say you have a server? Is it a domain controller?

I would copy the usergroups that are assigned to Suzie and give them to Tom rather than editing the share permissions themselves.

Just my opinion,

Whenever I double-click on any file folder, whether it be on the desktop, or inside any other folder, instead of opening up that folder, it just leads me to the "search for a file or folder" window. This happened after I changed my folder icon (which I've done before without any problems).

This led me to use system restore, which caused more trouble then it was worth, and now even after I undid the system restore, I get weird error popups from a download accelerator program that I deleted a long time ago, plus, some of my icons are changed.

How can I get my file folder buttons functioning normally again???

Hello all , i am new to batch programming.

I wish to have a batch file to read .apk file from folder and then copy it to another folder. Then it should rename the copied apk file to test.apk

eg:
i have a file in folder e:\apps\angrybirds.apk , I want to copy this angrybirds.apk to d:\apps and rename it to test.apk

Here the file names in the e:\apps\ will be changing. So what ever may be the name , it should read the name of the file from e:\apps\ folder , copy it to d:\apps\ and rename it to "test.apk" . Test.apk is a fixed rename

I was wondering if there's a way to sort file folders and shortcut folders so they are listed together, as in previous OS versions. I find it frustrating that 7 has forced the shortcuts to be split up into their own category rather than their file properties. I prefer to sort my folders by type, but doing so separates my shortcuts and I spend extra time looking for them. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

When I connect my Android phone to my computer via USB to access storage, it treats all the folders as music folders - this means that in Details view I don't get "date modified" but "track number", "artist", "album", etc.. despite this being completely irrelevant to the content of all but a single folder on the phone.

Is there any way of telling Windows that these are NOT music folders?

EDIT:
A couple hours of searching have given me nothing. I can change everything and anything I want about all but the library folders on the computer itself.

There doesn't appear to be any way to modify folders on removable media.

Hi I am running Windows XP on a DELL. My computer seems to be infected, my AVG has found a virus called Obfustat.SOI and found it in files 0.57.exe and A~NSISu_d.exe. AVG won't finish running properly so I had to stop it. I wrote down the files it said were infected.

Whatever has infected my computer has made it super slooow, as in about 5 minutes per click. I am trying to go in and manually remove the files. I currently have the computer searching for 0.57.exe in the My Computer file and subfolders. I have it also looking in hidden files and folders.

Can anyone tell me if I am on the right track in looking for these two files? Thanks so much!!

Just formatted a laptop, reinstalled windows7 and all of the drivers.

My laptop is an Acer Aspire 7738G-6006.

Here's the problem: To get the volume slider on the keyboard to work, I need to install Launch Manager. I found the download on the website and extracted it. When I run setup.exe though, absolutely nothing happens. It doesn't even show up for a split second in task manager.

I tried the same file on another computer and it ran just fine. I installed .Net framework as well as the C++ Runtime Distributable. No change. I've tried to run in compatibility as well as an administrator. I also tried Dependency Walker, it had this to say:
I tried downloading the new IE, no change, even tried DLing the DLL and putting it in the folder and that had no change either.

I think you need to register that dll you downloaded. Try regsvr32.

We currently block all our users from running .exe files on our network. However, we now have encrypted USB sticks, which to allow access a small .exe file needs to run.

Does anyone know how I can allow this 1 file to run, but keep the block on all other .exe files?

Can this be done through GP? If so, how?

We are running XP workstations, on a Win Svr 2003 domain.

Thanks

A long time ago I was messing around with various processes and services in Win7 x64, and one thing I did and promptly forgot about was that I renamed the avg cache server file AVGCHSVA.EXE to a different filename, to prevent this process from loading.

Now, months later, I'd like to re-enable AVG's cache server process, but simply renaming the file back to the original name, and checking the appropriate box in AVG's settings, gives me an error message.

Unless the filename itself has changed in newer versions, I suspect my problem is that my AVG installation (overall) is now version 9.0.0.832, and the version of the AVGCHSVA.EXE file I have is a much older version.

If anyone knows an easy way to get version 9.0.0.832 of AVGCHSVA.EXE, please post here or PM me. Perhaps some kind soul could even email a copy to me. Thanks!

A:Request for specific AVG file

Couldn't you just d/l AVG and run the installer? Suspect it will give you a repair option. If not, you can overwrite your version. A Guy

Hey guys, So I recently got a copy of Windows 7 and backed up my old non-legit version of Windows 7 so I wouldn't have to re download everything.

The reinstall didn't really work but I ignored that and copy & pasted all the stuff I needed over from my old Windows copy to my new one and then disk cleaned it.

Then I realised that I had not copied MW3 + CS:S from my steam library over, and because I have a capped internet ( 20GB ) I can't afford to redownload these two games. I backed up my hard drive to a Portable hardrive and am looking for the two specific steam files so I can just copy and paste it over, however their are apparently 469 inside the back up so..

Is their any quicker way to do this apart from opening every 469 zip files and looking inside?

^ Thats what my portable hard drives backup folder looks like.

I am struggling to install two programs. The first being LOLReplay and the second being BaronReplays. I can manage to install both but after a few hours or so (or after closing them down) I find that ONLY the .exe files for these programs has been deleted (including the shorcuts). My firewall has been turned off when installing and also off when running etc. I also had Bullguard Antivirus installed (a year or two ago) and that has run out so I am not sure if I have any antivirus installed. I really need your help as it is hindering my work. Thanks all! If you need any extra info let me know!

A:Specific .exe file being removed.

Not having an antivirus installed and fully updated can be a problem. I have seen where my antivirus would delete .exe files when it determined they were infected but usually I'd get a warning first. Most times the source I downloaded from became the suspect, not all download sites should be trusted. Haven't had much problem with downloading from the publisher's site except limits of bandwidth causing a slowness.

I am having trouble with windows 7 because I am trying specific words from US English to UK English (E.G. "appearance and personalization").

C:\Windows\System32\en-US (Shell32.dll.mui)

Now, because of the windows checksum. It will not allot me to successfully edit it without it reversing the changes.

I'm trying to teach my Windows to learn proper English.

I have been trying to use WfpReplace but the server to download seems to be down.

http://bitsumfordevelopers.com/files/wfpreplace64.zip

Is there anyway to do this in a more simplified way?

A:Help on disabling WFP For specific file?

You could disable WFP but it would be for all files, your system would not automatically replace damaged, missing or corrupt system files. I think your PC would be in a mess very soon.

I don't care for US Enclish (Can't even spell it !) either, but I've had to get used to it over the years.

I just bought a WD My Passport Ultra and it comes with a copy of WD Backup. Never using backup software I decided to give it a try and see what happens. I had no problems at all until I ended up with a message "These files failed to back up: UPPS.bin, 15.77kb". so I decided to try and find the file, which I found. The question is does anybody know what this file does and is it necessary to backup? Probably most of you know where this file is but for those who don't you can find the file at: C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\UPPS\UPPS.bin. Thanx in advance.

A:Can't backup a specific file

Did some checking and it looks as if others have the same issue. THIS link was from the WD forum, however there was no fix indicated. One person posted the following:

I've also received the same problem. I don't know what the file is. That troubles me, but i no longer receive the message since I told WD Backup to skip that file.

When i try to install drivers for a new PCI NIC, whether it be via "new hardware found", "device manager" or "search for new hardware", it finds my drivers, then when it goes to install them, it comes up with the error message: "Program error: your program has made an invalid dynamic link call to a .dll file".

Also, when I go into device manager it comes up that all my devices are categories and can not be removed (and yes, I am highlighting individual devices and NOT categories to remove!).

I am running WIN98SE on a Gateway PII 333 w/ 192MB RAM. I have read on the net that others have experienced these same two symptoms together, but haven't seen that anyone has described what causes this problem nor any solutions that acually WORK to fix it. Things that have been suggested to solve this problem, which I have tried but haven't worked, include...
1. Install a different NIC (with different drivers of course) thinking that it was possibly a bad card, but the same problem happened.
2. Running Version Conflict Manager (I restored all previous versions of the files listed)
3. Running System File Checker (all scanned files show OK)

I would REALLY appreciate any replies - thanks!

Hello Bre,

I'm not sure what you mean.

The .msi file extension is set to open with the Windows Installer Package (Msi.Package). If you need to restore the default association for .msi, then you can download and merge it in the tutorial below to do so.

My old sager laptop no longer worked. I however was able to transfer files from it to an external hard drive. Im trying to find this file on it. However, i cannot find it. That was in window 7. My new computer is windows 10.

I know the name of the file but i cannot find it. I do not know the name of the folder. So does that mean if i type the file and its not there, that means the file is 100 percent not on my external?

A:How to search for specific file on computer?

Don't know much about File Seach in Windows 10.

An external drive would be a "non-indexed" location in Windows 7. Personally I keep windows search disabled and use third party replacements. One of those that is supposed to work in Windows 10 is:
UltraFileSeachYou would need the LITE version which is freeware. Try the portable version for test purposes.

Example: Search for file names containing the text string "plugi" - use asterisks * for wildcards.
Or see other options for finding specific words or phrases in a file's contents.

I know it's possible to open a specific file type on a specific program (using default programs or "open with" context menu). But I was wondering if it's possible to apply that on a specific file, not file type.

For example, I have 4 videos (vid1.avi, vid2.avi, vid3.avi, vid4.avi) and I want vid1.avi to open in WMP (by default) while the other 3 in another video player like MPC (also by default). Is it possible?

A:Is it possible to set a specific file to open with another program?

Not by default, but you could do it using a new shortcut.

Create a shortcut to the player.
"C:\folder\player.exe"

Then add the path to the file you want to play so the shortcut points to:

"C:\folder\player.exe" "D:\videos\avi1.avi"

Another option is to change the file extension to something unused e.g. .bvi instead of .avi and then associate the .bvi extension to the player you want for that file

Another option is to convert the file to another known format and associate that with the alternate player.

I was working on a drawing in a program called Paint Tool Sai, and my computer crashed. I know I saved the file about 10 minutes earlier, but when I managed to restart my computer and reopened the file, the layer with most of the details was just gone. The changes I made in other layers stayed, but the that specific layer was suddenly empty. Is there a way to restore the file from, say, fifteen minutes before the crash, or is all hope lost? I tried to check the Earlier Versions thingy in the properties, but there are no versions there, at all.

Hi,
thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer, whether it's an application someone is aware of for doing this sort of thing or whether it can be done with scripts to work the files without opening them etc.

It's a two stage problem really, both elements concerning how to get or match data from files way too large to open in excel or access etc. with a view to adding considerabl numbers of extra product lines to my Amazon pro seller account, then keeping the stock and price figures updated.

Stage 1
Basically I first want to extract certain information from a 2Gb .txt file. The text file contains approximately 6.2 million product records (books mostly) and is provided to me weekly. I want to extract the same single piece of information (the 'I3' field) for every product which has one of a certain set of values for a different piece of information (the 'GC' field).

The I3 (that's a captial I not a 1 btw) field gives the 13 digit unique product identifier. The GC is basically a category code.

So all I want to end up with is a column of 13 digit codes. Every other bit of information is irrelevant.

Below is an example of three products from the text file. The ** is the separator between products.

I have a situation with various complications.
I have a file on a CD, and I need all the 'forensic' data I can get from it.

media files that get passed around take on several file types, morphing from video-cam to who-knows-what file types as they are sent here and there.
My question is two-fold
1. given a vid file, how would you determine the original-basis age of that file?
2. I have a separate issue with VPN access to my local network: how can I determine if someone coming in via VPN changed/altered the files local??? and secondly [I'll probably post this on its own], how do I limit VPN remote-access to my local network? I have 5 or so machines connected to wired/wireless on a typical day, and the vpn has been used for remote-control kinds of software..... its bugging me

Hi all,

I am about to transfer all the files pertaining to a project, copy them onto an external hard drive and give the drive to my client.

There are 4 .VEG files (Sony Vegas files, my video editing software) that I would like to be protected. Meaning that only me can open those files. So that the client can't simply hire another dude with the same software and freely work on the project on his end. Actually I highly doubt that my client is even remotely capable of doing something like that but this is a security protocol I wanted to implement for a while and now is a good place to start.

So is there a way to password protect those files or denying access altogether?

Because if the files are set to read-only once they are transferred onto the external drive that is not good enough. After all, someone can open the project and simply save it using another name.

Thanks

Phil

A:Denying access to a specific file

Honestly, I would just take the Vegas file off the drive. Anything we do to it, can be reverted/corrected by another 'dude'. Is this an option?

I am experiencing a very odd problem. I can reproduce it consistently.

It deals with the zipped file in the location below and is an issue on my 80GB External IOMEGA HDD.

G:\Work files\videos.rar

In the .rar file I have a file called: project1\ambience.avi

videos.rar is over 500MB in size with many different files, and ambience.avi is 30MB.

With Windows XP, whenever I try to copy this zipped folder, the copy function freezes when it reaches the file ambience.avi, and stalls for 5 minutes. After the 5 minutes, it resumes as normal, finishes the process, then I look to the copy destination folder and the copy is not there as would be expected.

I then check my Event Viewer, under Administrative Tools, and find 10-20 (amount varies) entries of:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Disk
Event Category: None
Event ID: 51
Date: 6/12/2006
Time: 8:25:08 PM
User: N/A

Description:
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\D during a paging operation.

These entries appear immediately after the 5 minute stall.

The error is persistent. If I try to extract the ambience.avi file, scan it with Norton, Windows Defender, ect., the same error occurs. Any process involving this file stalls my system for 5 minutes and logs the Event 51 error.

What could be wrong with this single file? I have checked, and no other files on my PC (all 3 drives) fail during a copy process. ambience.avi is the only one that does this!

ambience.avi is not even its own separate file--its compressed with... Read more
